LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Thomas and Edna are separating. They have two children. There is no hope of getting back together and they have tried relationship counseling. They are anxious to make the separation as smooth and easy as possible to minimize conflict for the sake of the children. They have heard of mediation but are wondering what it involves. Mediation is an excellent way to resolve conflict and is particularly useful in family law situations. There is a government funded medication service, which has offices countrywide, but in Kerry this service is offered through the Mediation Service at Unit 2, Market Place, Maine Street, Tralee, Co. Kerry -Phone: (066) 718 6100 Mediation is a method of resolving conflict where the parties to the dispute sit down with a third party mediator who helps the parties look at the issues in dispute between them and help them to come to a resolution on the issues. The mediator is completely neutral in this situation. Both parties have to be present and engage and it is a confidential and voluntary process. The whole idea is to help the parties themselves resolve the conflict and come to an agreement. The mediator creates an environment in which this can happen. It acknowledges the reality of a separation and helps the parties to look into the future and work out how best to orchestrate this for the whole family. The power is with the parties themselves rather than a resolution imposed by a third party e.g. a judge or an arbitrator. It is particularly well suited to family law disputes where a holistic fair solution is needed for the whole family and helps the parties find this solution in relation to resolving issues around Parenting the children Financial support The Family Home, Property and financial issues and Pensions It is a process of good faith and full disclosure. The mediation process can be quicker and cheaper than going to court. As it involves an agreed solution it is more likely that the parties will be happier to engage with this solution rather than an imposed solution. Both parties would take the agreement to their solicitors where it would be put into a legal format. Mediation can last 2-8 sessions of one hour each and may involve a meeting with the children to discuss family arrangements. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE CREDIT UNION WELCOMES FUNDING APPLICATIONS FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS At Tralee Credit Union’s AGM in December, the Board of Directors announced the approval of a fund of €260,000 to be shared with the community over the next four years. Mr Tom Lawlor Chairman announced that in addition to its “normal” sponsorships amounting to €25,000 and the annual education fund of €10,000 it is committed to approving €30,000 each year to support significant community projects”. The fund, named as the Lauri Healy Community Project Fund, amounting to €120,000 is in honour of founder director Lauri Healy and will support community based projects over the next four years. Speaking to Sean Roche Chairman of the Lauri Healy Community Project Fund Committee “Tralee Credit Union is committed to playing its part in the community. The funding from Tralee Credit Union will encourage and complement
the fantastic work that community groups do to make all our lives better. The Project Fund will assist in making a significant contribution to community based projects and initiatives within our common bond throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. We aim to allocate €30,000 each year, over the next four years. We are now accepting funding applications and welcome applications from groups and organisations. Closing date for receipt of the first round of applications this year is Friday 31st of March 2017. Applications Forms are available to download on our website www.traleecu.ie or to collect at our offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin” Lauri Healy was one of Tralee Credit Union’s founding directors when it was set up in 1968. Lauri was a strong believer in the credit union message and ideals. “People Helping People” grounded in
credit union’s co-operative values was at the heart of Lauri’s commitment to the movement. By working together through co-operation, people could achieve far more together than individually on their own. A board of director for over 30 years with Tralee Credit Union, Lauri served
with Chapter 23 (Kerry and Mid West credit unions) for as many years supporting the development of other credit unions and served as a board member of the Irish League Of Credit Unions where he helped shape the movement in its early days.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... THE ROSE IS SEARCHING FOR ESCORTS!... HOW ABOUT YOU? ROSE of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney, has challenged young Kerrymen to see if they have what it takes to be a Rose Escort at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from 16-22 August 2017. March 16th is the entry deadline, so lads will have one month to apply at www. roseoftralee.ie/apply. The Festival takes its name from a 19th century love song, so it was fitting that Maggie and the reigning Rose Escort of Year, John Slowey, would choose Valentine’s Day to launch the search for lads aged 21 to 30 to take part one of the most famous international festivals in the world. The primary role of a Rose Escort is to look after his Rose and ensure her time at the Festival is a memorable and enjoyable experience. The successful candidates will take part in a team-building Boot Camp in June at some of Kerry’s most stunning locations and participate in Festival events in August including the Gala Rose Ball, Parades and seven full days of entertainment. The Rose of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney, said: “The
Rose Escort is comic relief - the heart and soul of the festival which would not be as successful or such a brilliant time without the Rose Escorts. They bring the laughter and energy to the next level, and their support and companionship during the very busy days is so appreciated by the Roses. There’s just a certain buzz when the Rose Escorts show up. These men are interviewed and prepared to ensure their time and talents are well spent during the festival. They are top class gentlemen, and we are so lucky to have them as part of our festival.” In order to be eligible to be a Rose Escort at the Rose of Tralee International Festival applicants must: • Be male, 21 years of age by 1st January 2017 and not have reached your 31st birthday on or prior to 1st September 2017 • Be unmarried or never been married • Be born in Ireland or of Irish origin by virtue of one of your ancestors having been born in Ireland • Be available for Selection events and if selected be available for the International Festival
events from 16th to 22nd August 2017 in Tralee. One of the 65 gentlemen will be announced as the Rose Escort of the Year live on RTE One television on Monday 21st August. The 2016 Rose Escort of the Year, John Slowey from Co Fermanagh, said: “I had heard that being a Rose Escort was an unforgettable experience and indeed it was that, and a whole lot more. I met 129 other young people - in person - who had the same purpose down there, which was to have as much of a laugh as possible. Everyone sees the TV nights but that doesn’t
come close to what the week involves. The Rose of Tralee is like a bug it just grabs a hold of you, once you are in you don’t want to leave!!” Each candidate will be charged an application fee and should he be chosen as a Rose Escort, he will be required to obtain sponsorship of €1500. Lads who are man enough to apply for the job of a lifetime as a Rose of Tralee Escort can do so at www.roseoftralee.ie before Thursday 16th March or email info@roseoftralee.ie for more information.
SPA N.S.’S NOVEL ‘NIGHT AT THE DOGS There was a lot of excitement in Spa National School last Monday at the launch of its upcoming ‘Night at the Dogs’ fundraiser. The school will host the night at the Kingdom Greyhound Track on Saturday March 11th 2017 and it promises to be a fantastic family night out. All monies raised from the fundraiser will be used to purchase a new interactive whiteboard for each classroom in the school. “The organising committee has been working extremely hard behind the scenes and has received such generous support from the families in the school and friends in the wider community. We are very grateful!” said school principal, Peter Linehan. As well as twelve specially sponsored dog races starting at 7.00 pm on the night, the committee has organised 14

a wide variety of different novelty activities to keep the large crowd expected entertained. The younger visitor s can have fun with the bouncy castles and face painting artists. They will also be interested in the ‘Battle of the Legends’ with former Kerry footballer, Mark O Shea taking on Kerry hurler John Griffin in an eighty metre solo challenge! Who will win that one? However, the highlight of the night will most likely be the ‘Spa N.S. Wheelbarrow 525 Final’ being organised by the school’s student council. Six teams of students each led by a local celebrity will compete in a relay race with a difference. It promises to be a cracker! There will be prizes for the best dressed couples, lots of spot prizes and post Friday 17th February 2016
racing music to keep the party going. The committee has also set up a special ‘Buster Race Draw’ with the lucky winner taking home €500 on the night. “The excitement is really building,” added Rowena Savage, Chairperson of the
Parents Association, “and we invite everyone to come along and enjoy a really fun night out!” If you would like any further details, please contact the school on (066) 7136618

Fitness Tips from the Brandon Gym Craig and the team answer your queries Craig – Helpful tips to keep the gym as part of your lifestyle.
• Log all your workouts –this will give you an exact idea of how far you are going e.g 3 weeks ago I could only do 2km in 20 minutes now I can do in 16 or 3 weeks ago I could squat 30kg for 10 reps now I can do 35kg. • You are not looking for perfection you are looking for progress • Find a training buddy. 2 people are 40% more likely to stay at it then a person on their own. • Don’t beat yourself up if you missed the gym for a day or even a week, life happens and just accept that and get back at it as soon as you can • Make it cost you. People have no mass on something that is free so pay for Personal Training, not only will you always make the sessions, you will doing the best possible workout too. • Set yourself a goal. • Get up earlier if you are short on time, find time for it. Remember bad workouts are better than no workouts. • Make getting fit work around your current lifestyle • Try lots of different ways of exercising and when you find what works stick to that formula
John Fitzgerald - Having trouble developing a muscle Group?
Try a Time under tension (TUT) workout What is time under tension ? Time under tension is a way of calculating the total amount of work you place on a muscle. It refers to the total time a muscle resists weight during each set. So for example the slower you do your movement the more muscle fibres you will tear. Putting the muscle under longer bouts of strain , you can cause extensive muscle breakdown. My Time under tension leg workout Squats 2 warm up sets.....6 sets 6 reps (Going as slow as you can doing movement) | Leg press 4 sets 8 reps (going as slow as you can doing movement) | Lunges on step - 8 reps each leg - 3 sets ( slow as you can doing Movement) | Leg extensions- 5 sets 8 , 8, 6, 6 ,6 reps ( slow as you can doing movement) | Leg curls 5 sets 8 reps (as slow as you can doing movement) Calfs raises 6 sets 10 reps (as slow as you can doing movement)

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FAMILY INCOME SUPPLEMENT AND STUDENT GRANTS Question My wife and I are applying for the Family Income Supplement (FIS) for our family of two children. We are unsure about what income is included in the means test for this payment. For example, will my wife’s student grant be included? Answer Family Income Supplement (FIS) is a weekly tax-free payment for families, including one-parent families, at work on low pay. The combined income of a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting) is taken into account when your means are assessed for FIS. Income from any source, including a student grant, is assessed in the means test. However, the following payments are not counted as family income: • Child Benefit or any income your children may have • Guardian’s payments • Supplementary Welfare Allowance • Domiciliary Care Allowance • Foster Child Allowance • Rent Allowance for tenants affected by the decontrol of rents • Income from a charitable organisation • Income from providing accommodation to students studying Irish in Gaeltacht areas Capital is not assessed. This includes property you own, bank accounts and cars. However, bank accounts may be checked for other income sources and income derived from the use of a car that you own may be assessed (for example as a taxi). The main items counted as income are a couple’s assessable earnings, any extra earned in employment (such as pay for overtime, bonuses, allowances or commission), income from selfemployment, occupational pensions, social welfare payments (apart from those listed above), income from carer’s payments or rental income from the letting of property or land. HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017 This week a little mexican spice for you to enjoy. Mexican food is fantastic so much more than Fajatas. Wraps are used in every deli now. Great salsas and beautiful stews. Check out the blog traleeculinarygangsters.com for loads of other recipes and the facebook page tralee culinary gangsters for video and loads more as well
PORK AND HOMINY STEW (POZOLE ROJO) INGREDIENTS • 1 bunch mint (1 ounce) • 1 bunch coriander(1 ounce) • 4 pound country-style pork ribs (not lean) • 10 cups water • 26 garlic cloves (about 1 1/2 heads), peeled, divided • 1 (1/2-pound) white onion, quartered, plus 1/2 cup, chopped • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (preferably Mexican) • 5 whole black peppercorns • 2 ounces dried guajillo or New Mexico chiles (6 to 9), wiped clean • 1 1/2 ounces dried ancho chiles (2 to 4), wiped clean • 1 whole clove • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 3 cans hominy (also called pozole), (or any other bean) rinsed and drained
METHOD Accompaniments: diced avocado; crema; queso fresco; thinly sliced iceberg or romaine lettuce; chopped white onion; sliced radishes; fried tortilla strips or chips; lime wedges; dried oregano; dried hot red-pepper flakes Tie together mint and coriander with kitchen string. Bring Pork and water to a boil in a large pot, skimming froth, then reduce heat to a simmer. Add tied herbs, 20 garlic cloves, quartered onion, oregano, peppercorns, and 2 teaspoons salt and gently simmer, uncovered, until pork is very tender, about 2 hours. Strain broth through a large sieve into a large heatproof bowl. Return broth to pot. Discard mint and coriander. Transfer cooked onion and garlic to a blender with 1 1/2 cups broth and purée until smooth (use caution when blending hot liquids). Add purée to broth. Discard bones and coarsely shred pork into broth. Meanwhile, slit chiles lengthwise, then stem and seed. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat until hot, then toast chiles in batches, opened flat, turning and pressing with tongs, until more pliable and slightly changed in color, about 30 seconds per batch. Transfer to a bowl and pour 2 1/2 cups boiling water over chiles. Soak, covered, until softened, about 30 minutes. Purée chiles with 1 1/2 cups soaking liquid, chopped onion, remaining 6 garlic cloves, clove, and 3/4 teaspoon salt in cleaned blender until a smooth paste forms, about 2 minutes. Heat oil in cast-iron skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, then add chile paste (it will spatter) and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 5 minutes. Recipes by Add chile paste and hominy and simmer 5 minutes. Season with salt.

FITNESS!
Hello my strong friends! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! This week I’m going to be talking all about why low carb diets don’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried them all and the only thing they do is destroy your metabolism. As a weight loss strategy, cutting carbs (while reducing the total number of calories) clearly works pretty well for some people. If it didn’t, then Atkins would have never been popular in the first place. Here’s the thing, though: Carb reduction costs us. You see, most of us require some level of carbohydrates to function at our best over the long term. Keeping carbs too low for too long can have disastrous consequences. This is especially true for those of us who work out. If you’re sedentary, your carb needs are lower. So you might be able to get away with more restriction.
24
TRALEE ADVERTISER
But if you like to exercise regularly and enthusiastically, restricting your carb intake can lead to: 1. Decreased thyroid output 2. Increased cortisol output 3. Decreased testosterone 4. Impaired mood and cognitive function 5. Muscle loss In other words: Your metabolism might slow, your stress hormones go up and your musclebuilding hormones go down. Women with too-low carb intakes — especially active women — can face: a stopped or irregular menstrual cycle; lowered fertility; more body fat (especially around the middle); chronic fatigue and disrupted sleep;
Friday 17th February 2016
Everything should be in balance. I’m not saying to eat just carbs and only carbs every day, but I am saying that from experience, lots of women are afraid of carbs and think that they’re bad. What you really need to look at is how much salt and sugar are in your foods. I have said it before and I will say it again… INVEST IN A GOOD PERSONAL TRAINER. It will honestly change your life, and your
perception of carbs. I recently started a new nutrition plan and 35 percent of my food every training day comes from carb sources, carbs are absolutely essential. I eat porridge, basmati rice, wholemeal bread, white potatos and so much more and I have lost both weight and inches since I’ve started.

HEALTHY BONES AND JOINTS One of the most familiar physical signs of ageing is aching hips, knees and soreness in our bones and joints. All of us suffer from aches and pains from time to time either due to a specific health condition or perhaps from exercise or gardening or generally over doing things. Of course wear and tear and walking around on the same pair of hips and knees for decades can lead to soreness as can serious sporting activity but the good news is that there are natural ways to help yourself. And adequate intake of calcium at all stages of life, in combination with an active lifestyle will help ensure that bones are as strong as possible. Remember that without sufficient Vitamin D the body cannot absorb calcium. There are numerous calcium and vitamin D supplements available in both liquid and tablet form if you think you may be deficient in either. It is common sense that carrying any extra weight will put added strain on your joints so try to lose weight if you are experiencing pain or stiffness. Weight –bearing exercise such as walking is ideal or pilates which corrects the posture and strengthens muscles, alleviating pressure on joints. Make sure you are eating enough protein from meat, fish and eggs as well as adding lentils and seeds to your food, protein is needed to maintain bone mass. Most bone pain is caused by inflammation so taking natural anti-inflammatories may help. Some of the better known natural anti-inflammatories are: OMEGA 3 FISH OILS: potent anti-inflammatory and alleviates pain and swelling GINGER/BROMELAIN: both of which are known to aid inflammation in conditions such as arthritis. DEVILS CLAW: traditionally used for over 30 years to relieve everyday aches and pains in the joints.Suitable for all types of joint pain such as back/muscle ache and pain and rheumatic pain. Available in both gel and tablet form. ZINCUFLEX: combines Ginger, Curcumin and Vitamin C. The main role of this complex is to help reduce friction between moving joints and help contribute to normal collagen formulation and function of bones and cartilage. NHP OSTEO SUPPORT: a special mineral and vitamin food supplement providing Vit D3, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc to help maintain strong healthy bones. Antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E also play a large role in joint health so up your intake of fruit and vegetables, or purchase a good quality anti-oxidant formula. Another supplement to bear in mind is GLUCOSAMINE SULPHATE, taken to stimulate cartilage production and may also help to reduce pain and improve joint function. This is just a brief look at some of the natural products available to aid joint health so please ask in store where we are happy to discuss which products suits your specific requirements. Until next time, stay healthy.

MAKEUP LOVER’S GIFT GUIDE
Almost everyone has someone in their life who loves makeup, it’s a given. But sometimes it can be hard to know what to get a Self Confessed Makeup Lover... I decided to compile a list of makeup I cannot live without as well as some items that are on my personal wishlist and turn it into a Gift Guide for all my fellow makeup junkies. Whether you love makeup yourself or you’re looking to buy a gift for someone who does, I’m sure this list will help out.
NYX Powder Highlight & Contour Palette €25 NYX Contour Palette on Boots.ie LOOK AT IT! The contour shades are the perfect ashy toned shades so that you don’t look muddy/caked/like an oompa loompa! And the highlight has that gorge banana shade which is perfect for setting an under eye highlight. It’s also only €25, which is insane value! I haven’t tried a NYX product that has disappointed me yet.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade €18 Dipbrow Pomade on Beautybay.com The Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade is my ultimate brow product. I have been using it for over two years now and I refuse to use anything else. It most definitely is a staple in my makeup bag. You apply a small amount with an angled brush (Like the one below). Once you use this you won’t look back, I promise!
Blank Canvas Eyeshadow Brushes Blank Canvas Cosmetics Website Personally, I can never have enough eyeshadow brushes. A good eyeshadow brush is key to good eyeshadow. I’m notorious for spending money on makeup and not enough on makeup tools, so I would really appreciate getting eyeshadow brushes as a gift. The Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes are my favourite for many reasons. 1 - They’re so affordable, 2 - The quality is unreal & 3 - They have vegan brushes for all my animal lovers! I have selected a few of my must have eye brushes from Blank Canvas. You can also get the brushes in CH Chemist.
The Original Beauty Blender €23 Beautybay.com When you use this it will change your makeup forever. I’m being serious, IT’S THAT GOOD! You use it damp to, apply foundation, blend concealer and blend cream contour. I have used the branded dupes of this and nothing compares to the original one. I never use makeup brushes for my foundation anymore, only this.
So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... BROGUE LINES UP ANOTHER”ABSOLUTE 80’S NIGHT “ WITH CHRIS SHORTT NEXT WEEKEND After a great response to the previous “ABSOLUTE 8O’S NIGHTS in the Brogue ,Next Sat night Feb 25th , its going to happen again !! Yes the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “ Absolute Eighties” session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”We wanted to try something a little bit different , as we are now having entertainment up to 7 nights a week in the Brogue “ says Fiona Kirby .So Chris came up with the idea of an “Absolute 80’s Night “ which we thought was brilliant . According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 80’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with the music of the 80’s , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into that decade of Music ....we are talking Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac . LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! AFTER SURGERY
A surgeon went to check on his patient after an operation. “You’ll be fine,” he said. She asked ... “How long will it be before I am able to have normal sex relations again doctor?” The surgeon seemed to pause, and a small tear ran down his cheek from the corner of his eye, which alarmed the girl. “What’s the matter Doctor? I will be all right, won’t I?” He replied ... “Yes, you’ll be fine. It’s just that no one has ever asked me that after having their tonsils out.”

A rich guy buys a new car , the newest Ferrari model with the maximum speed of 400 km per hour, very proud of this new car he decides to take it for a spin.He drives around for a while until he runs out of gas, he pulls over to the nearest gas station and fills up the car and then goes back in to the car but before he could close the door and go on his way a short nerd with glasses , white shirt , pen protector , bike clips , riding a bicycle comes to his car and asks the rick guy: -Hey nice car , can I have a ride? The rich guys closes the door in his face and leaves. He drives with 100 km per hour and suddenly after a couple of minutes the nerd goes blazing in front of him, overtaking the Ferrari. The rich guy pissed accelerates and goes to 200 km and overtakes the nerd , after a couple of minutes again the nerd overtakes the Ferrari. The rich guy accelerates again, he goes to 300 km , leaving the nerd behind , would you know after a couple of minutes the nerd overtakes the Ferrari again. That is it , the rich guy accelerates to the maximum speed of 400 km, overtakes the nerd laughing , no way he can catch up to him now. But after a couple of minutes the nerd is blazing in front of the Ferrari like is nothing stopping him. The rich guy browned off , pulls over, annoyed that even a bicycle can outrun him. After a couple of moments the nerd comes to the windows , out of breath . -Huh huh huh , g-g-g-glad you st-t-toped I had my bicycle clips caught in the car door.
THE MOST AMAZING THING AT THE MALL
and then slide back together again. The boy asked, “What is this Father?” The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don”t know what it is.” While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed, and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number, and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous young blond in her twenties stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son, “Go get your Mother.”
A BLONDE, A BRUNETTE, AND A REDHEAD ARE ON TOP OF A BURNING BUILDING. There are firefighters at the bottom with a rescue blanket. “Jump down we will catch you” the firemen yelled. The brunette jumped down, when she was close the firemen yanked the blanket away and laughed as she went splat on the pavement. They the tell the redhead to jump “The brunette wasn’t nearly as beautiful as you, we will catch you we promise” The redhead jumps down expecting to be saved. The firemen yanked the blanket away she she went splat on the pavement laughing their hearts out. They then yelled at the blonde “Jump we didn’t like the redhead she was awful and not nearly as beautiful as you” The blonde didn’t beleive them. “I dont trust you, put the blanket down first and walk away you I know you won’t pull it away” The firemen then set the blanket down on the pavement and walked away. The blonde then jumped.

TORQUING CARS! TOYOTA WINS 2017 RALLY SWEDEN, FIRST WRC WIN SINCE 1999
After setting a great pace at the opening round of the 2017 WRC at Rallye Monte Carlo, Toyota has come in for its first rally win since 1999 at the weekend’s Rally Sweden. The Toyota Yaris WRC, driven by Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, took out all three stages at the snowy event, bettering the next-fastest Ott Tänak in the Ford Fiesta by 29.2 seconds. This puts the driver at the top of the championship by four points, with Toyota sitting in second place for the manufacturer’s title. This is quite a significant milestone for Toyota, as the last time it won a WRC round was the Rally China back in 1999, with Didier Auriol piloting the Toyota Corolla WRC car (above). Toyota president and team chairman Akio Toyoda was excited by the win, sending out a quote: “It’s a great feeling to win a round of the World Rally Championship after a break of 17 years.” The team is supported by Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Germany and Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, with team principal and former rally champ Tommi Mäkinen leading the project. Mäkinen said: “It’s very hard to find the words to describe what I am feeling right now: what we are all feeling. Monte-Carlo was an unexpected result, but this is beyond unexpected.” Rally Mexico will be the next round of the World Rally Championship, take place on the weekend of March 9-12. It will be interesting to see if Toyota can forge through the season and once again become a leader in the sport.
RIP TOP GEAR’: NEW SERIES TRAILER DIVIDES FANS AFTER YET ANOTHER SHAKE-UP OF PRESENTING TEAM
Asecond series of the revamped Top Gear was announced by the BBC this morning, and a first look at the “all new” motoring show has divided its cult-like following. Top Gear will return on March 5 on BBC Two with a new presenting line-up of Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid. The first photograph promises drama and excitement with a rocket launch, helicopter and Stig, the show’s disguised racing driver, in the background. It’s the second line-up change in as many years. LeBlanc and radio presenter Chris Evans took over when the series was rebooted following the departure of hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. But Evans quit the show after one series following plummeting ratingsand poor reviews, saying he gave it his best shot but it was “not enough”. Following his resignation, Evans said LeBlanc was the “captain” that the programme needed going forward and should remain on the show. The first-look image has been widely discussed by Top Gear viewers, especially those who watched Hammond, Clarkson and May’s new motoring show, The Grand Tour, on Amazon when it first aired last year. Some praised the new, more streamlined line-up, saying that the natural rapport between LeBlanc, Harris and Reid would be better than the scripted humour of The Grand Tour and the last season of Top Gear.
GENERAL MOTORS MULLS SALE OF VAUXHALL AND OPEL IN MOVE THAT RISKS EURO JOBS Vauxhall and Opel, marques owned by General Motors, could be sold to Peugeot in a deal that puts thousands of Euro jobs at risk. Shares in PSA Group, which owns Peugeot, jumped more than 5pc on speculation of a tie-up, with a spokesman for the French carmaker confirming that it was exploring a possible acquisition of GM’s UK and mainland European brands. If the deal were to go through, the combination would have about 16pc of the European car market, overtaking Renault as Europe’s second-largest car business behind Volkswagen. It also poses questions over the future of Vauxhall’s plants at Ellesmere Port and Luton, which together employ around 4,500 staff. While GM declined to comment, in a letter to staff, the company said it would “seek to ensure any transaction would serve the best interests of all our respective important stakeholders”.The Unite union said it had been given assurances last year from GM’s leadership that its plants in the UK would have a safe future, but these seem to have been forgotten by executives in light of the Peugeot talks.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR MAJOR FACE LIFT FOR CHRISTY LEAHY PARK: Please read the headline properly in case you think it’s Christy Leahy who is getting a face lift! Far be it from me to say that the foremost soccer sports reporter in the county needs a make- over! It’s Christy Leahy Park, the home of St Brendan’s Park that is due to be the latest sports facility in Tralee to be re-developed following on from Austin Stacks Park, John Mitchels and Mounthawk Park. Chairman of The Park Colm McLoughlin told the Tralee Advertiser that there were exciting times for the club. “Our Academy and underage set up is very strong and we have big numbers attending. On the field our aim is as always to develop these players to the best of their ability. We now feel the time is right to do some much needed work on our facilities. “The big job will be the upgrading of our pitches and warm up area. Our pitches have always been in decent condition but we need to sand them and verti drain them. Over the coming weeks were will also secure our boundary wall that was knocked down in a storm. “The major construction element of the works is the construction of a new clubhouse on the site of the existing shop. The building will accommodate a shop/coffee and meeting area for people to relax and take shelter if we get wet and windy days! “We will also upgrade and redecorate our current dressing rooms to provide facilities our players and visiting teams will be proud of”. The Park obviously needs to raise funds to do this work and hopefully will get support from the FAI and from the next round of Sports Capital Funding. However they also need to raise funds locally and in association with Byrne’s Spar (Caherslee, Monavalley and Oakpark) and Eir Sport they are starting a Grounds Development Fundraising Draw. Prizes include 3 Premium level tickets plus e100 diesel voucher to one of the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming matches at the Aviva Stadium in 2017. These include tickets to the sold out Wales game. Other prizes include 12 month free

subscriptions to Eir Sport. Another sought after prize will be a signed pair of boxing boots from Irish Olympic medallist Michael Conlon ahead of his professional debut in Madison Square Garden on St Patricks Day. Tickets for the draw are e5 each or 3 for e10 and St Brendan’s Park are calling on all Tralee sports fans and residents to support them in the exciting upgrade of Christy Leahy Park. Last team standing: Best of luck to the Park under 13’s who are in the Last 16 of the Sketchers SFAI Cup. This Saturday they welcome Mullingar to Christy Leahy Park with the carrot of another home game in the Last 8 if they get through. A couple of season the Park’s 16 went all the way to the SFAI National Cup final. Here’s hoping the 13’s can take another step along that road this weekend. NEW MANAGEMENT TEAM FOR KERRY 17’S ANNOUNCED: With the Kerry District League get ready for their second season in the Airtricity League their management team has been announced. FAI RDO Darren Aherne will once again be the Team Manager. He has received permission from the FAI to carry on after he came on board midway through last season. Darren will be joined by an experienced coaching team of Tim Collins, Tony O’Neill, Graham O’Neill, Thomas Kelly and Chris Heagarty. With the League kicking off in a few weeks the squad are presently doing their strength and conditioning work and working hard on the pitch 3 nights a week. Speaking to Darren at the Press Night he said he was very happy with his management set up and especially the level of experience that Tim and Tony will bring to the set-up. Both coaches have vast coaching experience around the underage game and will bring a lot to the game. “We have a very good squad with a nice mix of players from last season, who know they level needed to compete at the highest level, and new players who are eager to test themselves in the League of Ireland. And with our coaching line-up finalised we are Friday 17th February 2016
ready for the season ahead and have set goals for the squad that we hope they will hit.” Anyone interesting in seeing the u17’s in action can head along to Mounthawk Park this Saturday when the take on Limerick in a friendly at 2pm. INTERESTING DRAWS IN THE GREYHOUND BAR CUP LAST 16: The 3rd Round draw of the Greyhound Cup makes interesting reading as the two big sides in Tralee – The Park and Dynamos are long gone. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER This Sunday February 19th in Castleisland from 11am to pm it’s a training session for the u13 –u23 Kerry Athlete Development Squads. ST BRENDAN’S / OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES: Judo: The club won its first gold medals of the year, coming in judo. Sean Barry followed up on last year’s success with another gold medal in the 25kg u16 category with Zala Ozalan won in the 45kg u16 category. Sean and Zala will now go forward to representing the club at national level later in the year. Helin Ozalan came second to earn herself a silver medal in the 25kg u16 competition. Swimming: The County Championships will be held on Sunday, March 5th with the u8’s and u10’s starting at 10am and the u12.u14 and u16’s competitions getting underway at 12.30pm. Cross County an Mixed Distance Races take place on Sunday March 19th in Beaufort from 11am while the Indoor soccer is on March 26th. The club will also compete in the Projects and Art competitions. BIG WIN FOR WARRIORS: Warriors coach Mark Bersen was delighted with his side’s very important 86-80 win over Glanmire. Killester were just below Warriors in the table and this win was very important in the run to the play-offs. The home side led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and were ahead by 5 at the break 40-35. This was a tight game all the way through and by the end of the third it was 66-54 to the Warriors. Glanmire tried hard all the way to the finish but could not close the gap and the Tralee side took the valuable points. Mark said afterwards that is was an electric night for Tralee. “We had a full house in the Sports Complex and later on over 9,000 saw Kerry and Mayo so it was a great night of sport in the town. We made some good runs, they made some good runs, but we had a nice defensive effort in the first half and good offence in the second. It was a good win and an important won but we still have some big games to come and while I know it’s a cliché but we are only looking forward to the next game. We are on the road a good bit and that makes it a bit more difficult. But this was a crucial win and we will move on with confidence.” Warriors are away to Eanna in Dublin this Saturday with a 6pm tip-off. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB NOTES: In the Boys u11 Academy St Brendan’s were 30-15 winners over KCYMS. The 11’s had a great win over table toppers KCYMS from Killorglin. The Tralee side, without Liam Og O’Connor who we wish
a speedy recovery from injury, had previously lost to the same opposition so this was a great turn around. This win has the 11’s in joint first place in the group and 2 wins for their last 2 games will see them qualify for the finals. In the Boys u14 Division 2 Tralee derby is was the home side that got the better of Tigers 31-26. There was nothing between the sides early on with the sides tied 8 all after the first quarter but by half time St Brendan’s had opened a 5 point gap. This was out to 7 going into the final quarter 27-20 and St Brendan’s held on for the win. In other games in the Lee Strand u14 Division 3 it finished St Joseph’s 39-24 St Brendan’s while in the 16’s Division 1 St Brendan’s went down to Gneeveguilla 51-49 in a cracker. Imperials defeated St Brendan’s 67-53 in Men’s Division 1. DRAW GOOD RESULT FOR TRALEE RUGBY J2: In the Munster J2 rugby league Tralee will be happy that they have found form at the right time. They were struggling in the relegation area but have picked up points in the last few games and at the weekend added another with a 1212 draw with Castleisland. Darragh O’Neill scored two tries for Tralee and they can look forward to another season in the Division but will be looking for improvement. IN THE SQUARE – THE TRALEE GAA NEWS: TRALEE TOWN BOARD NEWS: The Tralee Town Board is delighted to welcome new sponsors D&E Tiling Stove Fitting, Glenduff Manor and Tom Boyle /Suits Select. There was nothing between the sides all game but in the end it was Friday 17th February 2016
the Stacks that took the win by the narrowest of margins 1-06 to 0-08. They host John Mitchels in Round 3 this Sunday. There was hard luck for the clubs players on the Senior County panel who went down to Mayo. And what a battle the CBS and the Rahillys players are involved in against Chriost Ri from Cork. Level after two games and extra time the decider is on this Saturday in Ballyvourney again. The minors had a big win over Ardfert 4-11 to 1-05 in the Town League while the younger players are in action in the Juvenile Academy on Sunday mornings. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 11,16,23 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e6,200. The club has launched its inaugural Strictly Come Dancing which takes place in the Mount Brandon on March 25th. More details of who the twinkle toed candidates will be over the coming weeks. STACKS NEWS: The younger age groups – 6’s, 8’s and 10’s have relocated to CBS The Green for their Sunday morning sessions. The u12 training continues in Connolly Park. The u14’s are on Sunday afternoons from 4pm while the 16’s train on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning in the Gym at 11am. Scor na bPaisti takes place on March 3rd with the quiz on March 26th. Best wishes to the Stacks players on the CBS The Green’s Frewen Team who are in the semi-final and of course those on the Corn Ui Mhuiri who will again take on the Sem from Killarney in the second replay this Saturday. This game must end so if still level after extra time I think it’s down to a Free Kicking Competition. On the Green’s: In the Tralee Golf Club’s 12 hole Sunday singles Gerard Hussey took the honours from Alan Kelly and Harry Dawson. The Ladies were out in Round 2 of the Garvey’s Supervalu Spring League and Mary Sheehy won this round with Ber Walsh in second and Fiona Lally third. Mary, who will be picking up her Kerry Sports Star Award on Friday night, was in great form parring her way around the course. Draws: While June might seem a bit away it won’t be long coming and on Saturday 24th Tralee will play the winners of Ring of Kerry and Dooks in the Senior Cup. Tralee face Kenmare in the Irish Junior Cup on July 1st while in the Barton Shield Tralee will play the winners of Glengarriff and Kanturk. Tralee are in action in the Jimmy Bruen where they take on Ross, in the Pierce Purcell Cup its Tralee against the winners of a previous round Killorglin in May. Tralee play Castleisland in Kanturk in the Irish Mixed Foursomes on June 17th.
