KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: BACK TO SCHOOL CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR ALLOWANCE Question What is the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance? Answer The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. You must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. Your children must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September 2016. If they are aged between 18 and 22, they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. The allowance is €100 for eligible children aged between 4 and 11 and €200 for those aged between 12 and 22.

The scheme is open from 1 June to 30 September 2016. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically to many customers. This means that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you should receive a letter stating when and how your Allowance will be paid. If you do not get an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must apply for the Allowance for them and supply evidence that they are in second-level education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in the family). You can get application forms in all local social welfare offices and Intreo centres, and on the Department’s website, welfare.ie. When a decision has been made on your application, you will get a letter informing you of this and whether a payment has been awarded. If your application has been successful, you will also be told when and where you can collect the payment. If the Allowance is refused, you can ask for a review of the decision.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... GALLIVAN MURPHY HOOPER DOLAN TO HIRE INSURANCE APPRENTICES IN KILLARNEY

Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances, part of the Hooper Dolan Group has announced its plans to hire an insurance apprentice into its office in Killarney, as part of a new nationwide, government-approved programme. The Killarney office is one of six branches in the Hooper Dolan Group that has committed to taking on apprentices. The Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship was announced by the government last year and is Ireland’s first apprenticeship that allows participants work towards an honours degree while earning a salary. The programme is structured around on- and off-the-job training, with apprentices working as paid employees in insurance brokers or companies, learning valuable workplace skills while also studying towards a BA (Hons) in Insurance online. The programme has been developed with involvement from industry organisations and the degree portion will be delivered online in a distance learning environment by the sector’s educational body, The Insurance Institute, along with IT Sligo. 100 places are available in various insurance organisations across the country for 2016, with this number expected to grow next year. “This programme is exactly what the insurance industry needs to address skills gaps and attract dynamic new talent into the sector,” commented Denis Murphy, Managing Director of Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan, which is located at Upper High Street, Killarney. “We’re looking for an enthusiastic school leaver, graduate or career changer who is eager to learn and who wants to create a long-lasting career in this innovative industry.” Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan are accepting applications by email to hr@hooperdolan.ie. Minimum entry requirements include two honours in the Leaving Cert and a pass in four additional subjects including English/Irish and Maths. For those over 23 on 1 January of the year of entry, interviews and other selection tools may be used to assess, replacing Leaving Cert entry requirements. Interested applicants can register their information at iii.ie/apprenticeships to receive details of other employers who are recruiting apprentices.

CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE TRALEE SPINOFF

On Saturday, August 20th, the community of Tralee will host a 50km cycle as part of the Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff series. A SpinOff is a locally organised cycle that takes place once each month after the main, 14-day Cycle around the island of Ireland ends. The events are locally organised, owned by the community and championed by Cycle Against Suicide ‘local leaders’. The Tralee SpinOff promises to be a particularly special event. It will depart from Aspen Grove, beside Lidl, at 2pm on Saturday, August 20th. The 50km route travels via the picturesque harbour of Fenit, before continuing on to Ardfert where parents and teens will be able to join the main cycle at 4:30pm, and continue on to Ballyheigue. Registrations for the Parent and Teen Cycle will take place in Ardfert Community Centre from 3:30pm on the day. 12 years old is the minimum age for participation in this section of the event. The local community of Ballyheigue will offer refreshments at the Community Centre from 5pm, where there will also be a mental health presentation and guest speakers. At 6:15pm, the cyclists will then start their return journey to Tralee, via Ardfert where the parents and teens will conclude their leg of the route. The main cycle will continue on to Tralee, to lead the 2016 International Rose of Tralee parade through Tralee town. According to General Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, 11:00am-1:00pm: Radio Kerry Outside Broadcast Oliver Hurley, “The message championed by Cycle Against Suicide is relevant to from Aspen Grove everyone, but especially to the peers of our Roses, Rose Escorts and indeed, many 12:30: Main Cycle Registrations at Aspen Grove of the people who attend Rose of Tralee events worldwide. If you would prefer to the 2016 International Rose of Tralee Parade volunteer rather than cycle, the Tralee SpinOff Committee welcomes all support, both in advance of the event, as well as on the day itself, and can be contacted at traleespinoff@gmail.com or 0861097135. IT’S ONLY A JOKE OOPS!

A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady. He stepped out for a smoke, only to realize he’d lost his cigarettes. In the middle the room, under the carpet, was a bump. “No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack smokes,” he said to himself. He proceeded to get out his hammer and flattened the hump. As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. “Here,” she said, handing him his cigarette pack. “I found them in the hallway. Now, if only I could find my sweet little hamster.”

WELL I’LL BE ....

A young boy is pulling his wagon up a hill when one of the back wheels falls off and rolls down the hill. The young boy says, “I’ll be darned.” A local pastor heard him and said, “You should not say that. Next time your wheel falls off say, ‘Praise the Lord.’” So the next day the young boy is pulling his wagon up the hill and the wheel falls off and rolls down the hill. The young boy says, “Praise the Lord.” The wheel stops rolling, turns around, rolls back up the hill and puts itself back on the wagon. The young boy being very surprised by this exclaims, “I’ll be darned!”

ROUND N ROUND

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation? Get your drunk butt off the merry-go-round!

HERO

Step 1: Name your iPhone “Titanic.” Step 2: Plug it into your computer. Step 3: When iTunes says “Titanic is syncing,” press cancel. Step 4: Feel like a hero. Q: How do you recognize a blonde’s tricycle? A: It’s the one with the kickstand.

If I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you 2 apples, and another 2 apples and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!” Johnny: Because I’ve already got a freaking cat!”

I’M ALIVE

A taxi passenger taps the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screams, loses control of the car, nearly hits a bus, goes up on the footpath, and stops centimeters from a shop window. For a second, everything goes quiet in the cab, then the driver says, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!” The passenger apologizes and says, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replies, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”

OPEN SESAME

A doctor walks into a room full of patients at a mental institution, takes out a pen, and draws a door on the wall. He then tells all the patients that whoever wants to escape, should use that door. Immediately they all rush towards it, but of course cannot go through. However, one patient sits still in the back with a smile on his face. He has not moved at all. The doctor thinks he must be cured. He then asks the patient why he did not rush to the door, and the patient whispers, “They don’t know that I’m the one who has the key.”

TORQUING CARS! BREXIT GIVES UK ‘HUGE ADVANTAGE’ IN TRADE DEALS, PREDICTS CAR INDUSTRY CHIEF

Brexit presents “unprecedented” opportunities to seal trade deals that are beneficial to both the UK and foreign partners, according to the boss of Britain’s biggest car dealer. Reporting steady gains in revenue and profit at the half-year stage, Pendragon chief executive Trevor Finn said although there has been “some uncertainty” because of the unexpected result of the referendum, the business has seen no change in sales volumes or enquiries. Britain leaving the EU and the time it will take to negotiate an exit offer massive advantages to the UK, he said. “We have got the opportunity to reset trading relations,” said the chief of the FTSE 250 business, which owns the Evans Halshaw and Stratstone brands. “We have knowledge of the terms of every trade deal the EU has as we are still part of that and that gives us a huge, huge advantage. “Imagine if a company knew the exact terms a competitor had with its supply chain, we are in a similar position. We can also negotiate specific deals on an individual country-tocountry level, rather than terms that have to be acceptable to all the EU members. We’ll be able to say, ‘Let’s work something out that benefits both of us, instead of all of the EU’.” Mr Finn is also certain that the EU will agree a trade deal with the UK on cars, an industry some fear could be hit hard by Brexit with imports of vehicles set to face a 10pc tariff under WTO rules.

RANGE ROVER PRINCE WILLIAM USED TO PICK UP NEWBORN PRINCE GEORGE GOES ON SALE WITH HUGE PRICE TAG

The luxury off-roader became one of the world’s most photographed cars when the Duke of Cambridge drove it to St Mary’s Hospital A Range Rover Prince William used to pick up newborn Prince George and the Duchess of Cambridge from hospital has gone on sale – for £150,000. The luxury off-roader became one of the world’s most photographed cars after it was parked up outside St Mary’s Hospital in July 2013 to pick up the famous pair. The 4x4 has now gone up for sale and is expected to fetch at least £150,000 – in ordinary circumstances it would be worth just £50,000. The SE Vogue model, powered by a 4.4-litre V8 diesel, was given to the royal couple for their own personal use by Land Rover’s VIP Department in 2013. The car is being advertised on Auto Trader with a guide price of £150,000 because of its royal heritage. Proceeds from the sale are going to charity including the Sun Screen IT, which donates IT equipment to schools in Africa and Stand Down, the Military mental health charity. Jon Quirk, Auto Trader’s editor-in-chief, said: “The Range Rover has long been considered the ultimate statement in luxury transport, and its go-anywhere ability makes it a fine royal conveyance.

HEALTHY RECIPES

TRALEE ADVERTISER

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016 This time of year brings us blackberries, I love picking blackberries, it takes me back to my childhood, they have a beautiful flavour , especially the wild ones. Of course its what to do with them , Blackberries make great jam but I love turning some into chutney, great with a cheese board but a little stirred into sauce give it a complex flavour. Check out all the previous recipes on www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com

BLACKBERRY, APPLE & CHILLI CHUTNEY RECIPE

This made about 1500ml of chutney. You can scale the recipe to suit the amounts you have available. INGREDIENTS • 700g freshly picked blackberries, stalks removed and washed • 700g apples washed and roughly chopped, including skin, cores and pips* • 1 tbsp vegetable or rape seed oil • 2 tbsp brown mustard seeds • 2 or 3 (or more) fresh chillies, finely chopped (you could use dried too) • 2 red onions (about 150g) peeled and finely chopped • 2 or 3 (or more) garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 30g fresh root ginger, scraped and finely chopped • 300ml best quality cider vinegar • 300g sugar (I used caster sugar) • 1 tbsp ground mace

METHOD

Put the blackberries and chopped apples in a pan and bring gently to a simmer. You shouldn’t need to add any extra liquid, the blackberries will produce enough juice. Simmer the mixture until the apples are soft. Put the pulp through a food mill or coarse sieve to get rid of the pips, skin and core. It’s a nightmare trying to push this through a fine sieve. In a clean pan heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and fry until they pop. Then add the chillies, onions, garlic and ginger and sweat gently until the onion is soft & translucent. Add the vinegar and sugar and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Then add back the fruit pulp & mace and bring back gently to a simmer. Simmer for about 20 minutes until the chutney thickens slightly Pour while warm into warm, sterilised jars and seal. Store in a cool, dry dark place

Best Dressed lady...

With the summer coming to a close now is the perfect time to try something new. The cropped fringe has become massive in the world of barbering. This is suitable with a very short cut on the sides. It is particularly handy for men who go to the gym a lot as the fringe is nowhere near long enough to be in your eyes. It also suits most face shapes and hair types. We hope to see you all next week. We will do the work for you; wash, cut, blow-dry, style it up or a total change. So call in or make an appointment to be looking your best for the Rose of Tralee Festival 2016.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! FESTIVAL UPDATE...DOME ROOF IN THE SQUARE, LIVE MUSIC IN DENNY ST, AND ROAD CLOSURE INFO... THERE will be 84 hours of entertainment in The Square over the duration of the extended Rose of Tralee International Festival but only 15 hours of this will controlled by a ticket system. The general public will be restricted from accessing The Square at certain times to ensure control of numbers to artists who potentially would have a large following and, as has been the case since 2011, to help towards the increased street entertainment €330,000 expenditure budget. The key request from festival organisers to the general public is to cooperate with the Volunteers who have given their time, free of charge, to ensure that everyone enjoys the festival in comfort and safety. The all-weather Saddle-span Dome Roof over the stage in The Square will create a more ambient and chilled vibe to the evening concerts at the venue, five of which are controlled by ticket and the remaining two (Sat 20th & Tue 23rd) FREE to the public. How will festival-goers access The Square? The entrance to The Square during security ticket control times is located via the North West corner, next to Carraig Donn, with an exit only to the north east (next to Dan Fitzgerald’s) and south west (next to An Cearnóg). Access to businesses will be restricted at these times (after 7pm), while provisions have been made with some businesses located on the corners of The Square to have controlled public access into their premises. Security and Festival management will endeavour to facilitate the public as much as is practicable and, as has been the case in recent years during ticketed events on Denny Street, patrons of businesses in The Square have been asked to take note of

the times when security controls will be in place. Full details of all entertainment acts due to perform in The Square – day and night – are available from www.roseoftralee.ie and on Facebook. The Event Controller, Bryan Carr, said: “The Festival must adhere to strict risk assessed guidelines including legislation regarding control and management of events both indoor and outdoor. While we appreciate people may have concerns in relation to these events; rest assured that just as previous Festivals we want to ensure another safe and incident free festival for visitors and local alike to enjoy. We would like to thank all the businesses in advanced for their continued support of the Festival and we ask the general public to support and promote our Festival to make it a successful and safe event for 2016.” So, what’s happening on Denny Street? If you enjoyed watching Buckingham Palace come to life through the magic of light during Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, then you won’t want to miss the spectacular Illumination of Ashe Memorial Hall. The show from 10pm to midnight on Wednesday 17th, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th will celebrate Tralee’s 800 year history, the 1916 Rising Centenary and 57 years of the Rose of Tralee. And yes, contrary to what some people have said, there will be live music on both ends of Denny Street and a stage will be located in front of the Ashe Memorial Hall for the three parades on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday and for the FREE Garda Band and Willis Clan concerts on Sunday 21st August. Road Closures Once again, in order to accommodate the large crowds of people who are looking forward to enjoying all the fun of the

Festival, the following roads will be closed as follows: Bridge Street, The Mall & The Square: • Wednesday 17th Aug: 7pm-1am • Thursday 18th Aug: 7pm-1am • Friday 19th Aug: 7pm-1am • Saturday 20th Aug: 12pm-2am • Sunday 21st Aug: 12pm-2am • Monday 22nd Aug: 8pm - 2am • Tuesday 23rd Aug: 8pm-2am Lower Castle Street R875, Lower Ashe Street and Courthouse Lane: • Wednesday 17th Aug: 7pm-1am • Thursday 18th Aug: 7pm-1am • Friday 19th Aug: 7pm-1am • Saturday 20th Aug: 12pm-2am • Sunday 21st Aug: 12pm-2am • Monday 22nd Aug: 8pm - 2am • Tuesday 23rd Aug: 8pm-2am Full details of all festival events, which are subject to change, are available from www.roseoftralee.ie, Facebook. com/roseoftraleefestival, Twitter @ roseoftralee_ and from the official brochure, on sale from Festival Office, Kerry Book Shop, Hussey’s Newsagents, Oaklands Daybreak, Garvey’s Supervalu and First Chapter at Manor West Retail Park.

CREAM OF GAA YOUTH TO BATTLE IT OUT FOR OAKLANDS DAYBREAK ROSE CUP

THE Oaklands Daybreak Rose Cup Under 13 Boys Football Tournament will again be one of the star attractions for sports fans during the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. It was fitting that the Kerry Rose, Danielle O’Sullivan, should launch this year’s competition as her local club Killarney Legion will be aiming to retain the cup which they won last year. This year’s event will see 16 teams from Kerry and beyond battle it out for the Rose Cup and Rose Shield. The Communications Manager for the Rose of Tralee, John Drummey, said: “Now in its eighth year, this competition is a prestigious event on the GAA Juvenile calendar in Ireland and it will be organised by Coiste Trá Lí under the banner of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. We look forward to welcoming the players, supporters and their families to Tralee for the Festival. We are also delighted that Oaklands Daybreak have continued to sponsor the competition once again.” The tournament will get underway at 10am on Saturday 20th August at two Tralee GAA venues – Kerins O’Rahilly’s and Na Gaeil. The Rose Cup and Rose Shield will be presented to the winning captains at Na Gaeil CLG by the Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan and James O’Donoghue from Oaklands Daybreak, Listowel Road, Tralee. Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re all having a great week! Because the Rose Of Tralee is starting next week, this week I thought I’d give you my top tips on a flawless makeup application to ensure your makeup stays on all day or night! If you’re still not confident after these tips and want a flawless application, there are so many makeup artists in Tralee to choose from. Just be sure to look at a few of the looks they have created before to ensure you like their style. Unfortunately I won’t be around this year for any appointments during the Rose Of Tralee, I have Lancome duties to attend to in Dublin! 1. Start with a clean base – Most important. Your face is your blank canvas, it sets the tone for how your makeup will turn out. Before ANY makeup application, ensure to cleanse tone and moisturise. Having a clean base will ensure to get rid of any dirt or bacteria that could be on your face. 2. PRIME – Once you have your fresh clean face as your base, you need to prime. Priming your skin gives the skin a more smooth appearance so that in turn, your makeup will go on more evenly. Also primers give the makeup something to stick to, if your apply foundation straight ontop of moisturiser, it can cause your makeup to go blotchy. You need to leave the moisturiser sink into your skin and then apply a primer. 3. Use clean tools – This is very important for a flawless application. You would not believe how much bacteria an unwashed foundation brush can harbour. TOO MUCH. The night before your big event, deep clean your makeup brushes with lukewarm water and baby shampoo. Then if you have an event which is longer than a day, aka The Rose Of Tralee, you can spot clean them with a makeup remover spray in between deep cleans. I think pennys have one. 4. Set your makeup – To make sure your makeup stays flawless, make sure to set everything. By set I mean, if you use a liquid or cream product, use a powder product ontop to set it. For example, after my foundation, I use liquid concealer under my eyes and on my eyelids, if I didn’t set it, it would crease. I would have creasy undereyes and creasy eyeshadow. So I use the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Powder to set my undereyes and eyelids. Any light loose powder will work. Just be wary if you have really dry skin as you don’t want to look cakey. As an alternative to powder, you can use a setting spray, I recommend the Clarins Fix Makeup setting spray or the Urban Decay All Nighter. 5. Use liner all over the lips – If you want your lipstick to stay on longer, line your lips all over with a lip liner before you apply any lipstick. This will give your lipstick something to stick to and your lipstick will stay on way longer! 6. Use a good eyelash glue – If you are going to be wearing false lashes, make sure you have a good glue so those bad boys can’t go anywhere! You can buy Duo Glue in Boots, CH & Pennys, it’s the best eyelash glue in the business and it will keep those lashes on. Or if you buy Eylure lashes, the glue that comes with them is great too!

If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah. Stay Gorge,

Drinking water through-out the day can help fight fatigue

FIGHTING FATIGUE

Life is definitely more hectic than it once was and whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, everyone seems to be looking for more energy. Of Course, if you are suffering from serious fatigue you should pay your GP a visit to rule out any medical issue which may be causing your symptoms. Some people may struggle with complete exhaustion where they feel every muscle in their body is aching, but for most people it may not be this severe but they still struggle to cope and function on a daily basis. Concentration, tolerance and coping levels may also be affected; and even the smallest things seem to aggravate you! A healthy balanced diet is essential. Never skip breakfast (or any meal), as your body has been fasting over night and needs a jolt to get the day started. This also kick starts your metabolism. Avoid foods high in sugar as they will give you a sudden “burst of energy” but will also result in a rapid drop in energy leaving you feeling exhausted. Some other key things to remember are: • • • •

Sleep: May sound obvious. Aim for seven to eight hours a night and ensure you are relaxed before going to bed. If possible a nap for 20-30minutes during the day may also help. Exercise: It really does help. A brisk walk will leave you feeling more energised, not less. Drink water throughout the day: Even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and life-less Watch your stress levels: Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling physically and mentally exhausted regardless of how much sleep you get.

While these lifestyle changes are guaranteed to make a difference to your energy levels in the long term, there are also some excellent supplements which will help you! Some of these include: • Co-enzyme Q10: Your cells use it to produce energy • Tyrosine: Ideally taken during periods of low motivation and poor concentration, helps to focus the mind. (not suitable if you have high blood pressure) • Passiflora: Tincture which may help alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety • Melissa: Combination of relaxing herbs together with magnesium to relax and L-Theanine – just 2 tables 1 hour before bed to aid a restful night’s sleep. • B Vitamin: A good quality B Complex (which contains all of your essential B Vitamins) is a must. It helps raise your tolerance levels and coping capabilities; also helps energy levels. Talk 1 every morning after breakfast. • Omega 3: Your body needs the “Good Fats” to function. If your diet is deficient then supplement with a good fish oil, such as Eskimo, MorEPA or Krill, choose from liquid or capsules • If you are currently on medication some of these remedies may not be suitable so always ask us and we will advise you.

Until Next Time, Stay Healthy

FIVE WEEKS TO AYIA NAPA

Hello my strong friends, I hope you’re having a great week! It’s 5 weeks til I go to Ayia Napa, the excitement is INSANE. Training, is going awesome also, motivation is sky high. I have been doing high intensity cardio at least 4 times a week, just to keep up with fat burning, and 6 weights sessions a week. I feel great, my weight and measurements are decreasing, at a healthy rate. I’m honestly so happy with my progress, I actually love going to the gym, most days. Some days I do have moments where I just want to stay in bed and watch Netflix with snacks but I still go and feel so much better! Like I have a rest day tomorrow and I’m kinda sad I’m not gonna lie. But rest days are important to build up your muscles etc. Just to give you an idea of what my training days are like, I’m going to give an example of an upper body and lower body day. Obviously, this plan is specifically for me and tailored to my goals, so if you want a plan or you want to know what to do in the gym. Go to a qualified PT either in your local gym or online.

CARDIO

Start with 15-30 mins on treadmill uphill walking mixed with fast paced jogging intervals. Depending on how I’m feeling I’ll do more jogging/sprinting than uphill walking some days for more intense cardio.

UPPER BODY

Bicep Curls – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 10kg Shoulder Press – 4/5 sets of 10 reps each arm with 10kg Bench Press – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 20-25kg Bent Over Row – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 14kg Skull Crushers superset with Flat Bench Chest Flys – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 6kg Straight Arm Pull Downs on cable machine – 4/5 sets of 12 reps with 12.5kg Lat Pulldown – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 35kg Knee Raises – 4/5 sets of as many reps as possible

LOWER BODY

Squats – 4/5 sets of 12 reps with 45kg Deadlifts – 4/5 sets of 12 reps with 50kg Good Mornings – 4/5 sets of 10 reps with 30kg Walking Lunges – 3 sets of 12 reps each leg Glute Kickbacks – 4 sets of 12 reps with 12.5kg Kettlebell Swings – 4 sets of 12 reps with 12kg Kettlebell Lying Smith Machine Leg Press – 4 sets of 12 reps Glute Bridges – 4 sets of 12 reps with 20kg

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR OLYMPICS START BUT NOT AS WE WANTED: Every four year sports fans and those who might only dip in and out of sports coverage become experts in gymnastic, rowing, archery not to mention the hammer and how to run the perfect middle distance race. Yes it is Olympics time again and all eyes are on Rio. From a time point of view Rio is not a bad venue as it is only 4 hours behind us. So for the last few weeks were all looking forward to the games and reading with interest of the drugs tribulations of other nations, especially the Russians. There is no doubt that the drug agencies and WADA – The World Anti -Doping Association have stepped up their actions or maybe have stepped up the getting across of their work. From our own point of view taking away the now rarely mentioned Michelle Smith debacle we have steered clear of doping controversies. So it was a bolt from the blue when the first athlete to get banned for failing a drugs test was one of our own. We have all followed with interest the saga of Michael O’Reilly who we have to say at the time of going to print was still involved in an appeals process. We still don’t know what the substance that the boxer tested positive for, whether it was something medical or performance enhancing or what his line of appeal will be. Originally he did not want the B sample to be tested but that changed on Tuesday and it seems that his sources are saying that they believe “100%” that the B sample will be clean, therefore indicating they believe the A sample might have been tampered with. But whatever happens is certainly can’t have helped O’Reilly if he does get to box. One boxer that was beaten but about whom we can only say good things is Paddy Barnes. He was going for a third consecutive medal but the continuous effort of trying to make the 57kg weight eventually caught up on Barnes. He is the leader of the boxers who have been our flag-bearers over the last few Olympics and where the medals have been coming from. No doubt he will be cheering on and giving all the other boxers every help he can despite his disappointment. And then we have the ticket scandal with thousands of tickets from the OCI – the Olympic Council of Ireland ending up on the black market!! These included tickets to the opening ceremony that were being offered for multiple their face value. The Brazilian police have arrested Kevin James Mallon of THG Sports, a company that used to handle tickets for the OCI but no longer does. THG have come to notice of the police before when they were involved in the same type of thing during the World Cup. Coincidentally Stephen Hickey, son of OCI President Pat Hickey, has worked for THG in the past butr is no longer involved and there is

48

TRALEE ADVERTISER

no suggestion that either of the Hickey’s were in any way involved. However from somewhere in the OCI tickets from the Irish allocation have found their way to touts. I am sure this story will run for the next week or two and added to the O’Reilly’s woes won’t have done anything for Ireland’s credibility. But we must not forget that there are many other athletes who are doing their very best as they represent us. Amongst those are brothers Gary and Paul O’Donovan from Skibereen, who are reigning European Champions. The won their heat in the Lightweight Sculls and endeared themselves to the media by saying about the windy conditions that “we want to race every day, we’re well used to a bit of wind. That kind of thing won’t faze us. We were almost disappointed we couldn’t have raced in the wind the day before – it would have been a bit of craic!”. Gymnast Kieran Behan did a great job before a knee injury at the start of his floor exercise meant he had no chance of progressing. But Behan’s back story has seen him overcome a tumour in his leg when he was ten years old. There were complications with the surgery and when a tourniquet was not removed as often as it should it led to severe damage to his leg. This 10 year old spent 4 months in hospital and went from a machine attached to him to move his leg, to a wheelchair, zimmer frame and being told he would never recover the power in his leg to now being a double Olympian. If you haven’t read his full story then check it out online and it will restore your faith in what sport should be about. Others who have done well include the equestrian team and Dan Martin’s 13th in the cycling plus some of the swimmers so there is plenty of good news stories from Rio with many more to come. Roll on the rest of Rio and of course we are still awaiting the start of the athletics – when most people really get into the games. BUSY NIGHT AT THE TRACK: This is a busy week on and off the track at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with the first round heats of the Boylesports Derby from Shelbourne Park shown during the week. On the track on Friday it’s the final of the MidtownRaffa@Stud Bitch Stake plus a number of 12 dog stakes for the Rose of Tralee Sunday meeting. On Saturday night it’s the semi-finals of the Track Supporters Club Rose of Tralee A4 525 yards plus a number of supporting 12 dog stakes. Also taking place are the first rounds of the Bracker O’Regan Memorial A3 Tri Distance. WHO WILL BE CROWNED CYCLING’S COUNTY CHAMPION IN CURROW? The Senior County Championship’s will take place in Currow on Thursday August 18th. All riders that are from Kerry or are a member of a Kerry cycling club are eligible to take part once they have not taken part in another County Championship in 2016. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be given out in the following categories: First 3 men overall, first 3 women overall, first 3 A2’s, A3’s and A4’s, first 3 Juniors and Masters over 40, 50 and 60 as well as the team section with teams of 4 to count. The racing starts at 7.30pm on the circuit used for the County League. Conor take’s win in Cordal: The final round of the Clubs of Kerry Road Race League took place in Cordal and was hosted by Moda Kingdom Endurance. With places on the final table up for grabs there was there was lots of exciting action and in the end it was Killarney CC’s Conor Kissane that took his first win of the season. He was followed home by Manor West iBikes Oran Pierse and George Doyle. Killarney Cycling Club had a good night with Leigh Hewerdine in 4th and Marcus Treacy in 6th. They were split by Killorglin’s Michael O’Shea. The League Table: The provisional League table shows that Oran Pierse is the overall winner. Leigh Hewerdine’s 4th place in Cordal puts him in contention for a top 5 place and the only non Manor West iBike rider to break their stranglehold on the top of the table. The full results will be published next week. Underage Double Up: The under cyclists had lots to ride for in Cordal as the race counted as a round of the League and also the County Championships. The Road Race League runs at the even ages and here in the u12’s Killarney CC’s Aona O’Shea took the win from Killarney CC’s Shane Galvin with Kingdom’s Adam Lenihan in third. Taking the final three points scoring places were Eoin Hilliard (Kingdom), Jack Breen (Currow) and Josh Hewerdine from Killarney CC. Eoghan Patwell of O’Leary Stone Kanturk was the winner of the u14’s followed by Tralee Manor West iBikes Sean Barrett and Eoin Moloney. Killarney CC’s Patrick Galvin was 4th, Tadgh O’Shea Killorglin 5th and Faith Hilliard from Kingdom CC 6th. In the u14 Girls Kingdom CC’s Faith Hilliard beat off the challenge of Almha and Tara Russell Kissane. Kieran Coggins from Tralee Manor West iBike took the u16 win with Fergal Murphy from Killarney CC second, Robbie Scott, Manor West iBike third and David Fitzgerald from the same club in 4th. County Championship Winners: The County Championships are raced for at each age group from u11’s to u16’s. It was a good night for the Galvin family from the Killarney Cycling Club as Shane won the u11’s and Patrick the u13’s. Second behind Shane in the u11’s was Kingdom’s Eoin Hilliard with Currow CC’s Jack Breen third. Patrick beat off

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES Kingdom CC’s Ciaran Commane and Ronan Leahy from O’Leary Stone Kanturk in the u12’s. In between the 11’s and 13’s was the u12 race which was won by Killorglin CC’s Aona O’Shea. Kingdom’s Adam Lenihan was the runner up followed by Killarney CC’s Josh Hewerdine. O’Leary Stone Kanturk’s Eoghan Patwell is the u14 County Champion as he just got the better of Tralee Manor West iBike’s Sean Barrett and Eoin Maloney. The u14 Girls result is the same as the Road Race with Hillard seeing off the two Russell Kissane girls Almha and Tara. As expected the u15’s was a battle of the Manor West iBike riders with Kieran Coggins taking the win from Robbie Scott. In the u16’s Killarney CC’s Fergal Murphy beat off David Fitzgerald to take the win with Fitzgerald unlucky to have break issues. Jake Deering also had no luck as his chain broke as he was going well. ATHLETES HEAD TO ATHLONE: The Community Games National Finals take place over the next two weekends in Athlone. Athletes who qualify for these finals have worked so hard over the last number of months and to compete at this level is such an honour, not only are they representing their area, St Brendan’s /Oakpark, but their county as well. Everyone in the area would like to wish the following the very best of luck: Athletics: Jane Akinrinlade and Basit Oyebanji; Judo: Seán Barry, Bailey O’Sullivan and Donna Rogers; Swimming: Darragh Masterson, Eoin Cahill, Jack Doyle, Nader Maloudi, Niamh O’Mahony, Emma Carroll and the U16 boys squad . DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR KERRY CRICKETERS: Kerry cricket club’s 1st and 3rd squads enjoyed two good wins at a blustery Oyster Oval in Fenit. First up was the Thirds defeat of Cork by 94 wins. Cork were on 98 runs as they failed to chase down Kerry’s lead. The Kerry firsts travelled to the Town Park in Midelton and they hit a big score of 325 runs. Kerry bowled their hosts out for 251 giving them a 74 run win. Kerry are the Munster Senior Shield champions and this Sunday they face County Cork in the decider at the Mardyke on Sunday at 1pm. JUNIORS GO BACK TO BACK: To win just once is hard but to win back to back All Ireland titles is a great achievement for the Kerry Juniors and especially for the management team who have done it with two completely different panels. While people will say that the playing pool is greater than other counties that will only take you so far towards winning the ultimate accolade. The squad were excellent all year and put in a huge effort and this was proved when they suffered a blip in the final against Mayo. The Kingdom were well in control in the first half but Mayo hit two goals in a comeback that would have cracked a lesser team. But this Kerry squad had the hallmark of a Wallace management and they just took a breath, upped a gear and the game was over as a contest within ten minutes. But probably more important than the actual two All-Ireland titles is the number of players that will go forward to the Kerry senior set-up. Last year it was 7 that were involved in the League and this year should see another 7. This

is the legacy of a hugely successful three year term with the Juniors for Stephen Wallace. The question is where will he go pop up next? PARNELL’S NEWS: Summer Break: The summer break is coming to an end and all age groups will train on Friday August 12th in Caherslee. Players will get texts from the managers with details. Cul Camp: The Parnell’s Cup Camp is on from the 15th to 19th of August and bookings are still open on-line. The Camp is for boys and girls aged between 6 and 13 and all activities are game based. The GAA have launched a standardised warm-up programme to try and reduce the number of injuries sustained by GAA players. GAA 15 Injury Prevention Programme / Warm Up shows Oisin McConville and Crossmaglen Rangers using the programme. All the details of the programme is available to all on the GAA Social Media sites. A Concussion education poster will be distributed to all clubs via the County Boards or can be downloaded from learning.gaa.ie / Concussion. Clubs are asked to study and implement the guidelines and all can learn from the advice sheets for players, coaches, parents and referees. CAMOGIE NEWS: The Liberty Insurance Premier Junior Championship game between clash between Kerry and Limerick took place this week. The game was played in in Kilmallock as the camogie players tried to emulate the Kerry senior ladies who booked their place in their 9th consecutive All Ireland Senior quarter final. Kerry dominated the early exchanges with Jessica Fitzell scoring an early goal but the sides were level 1-01 to 0-04 at halftime. Kerry got the first score of the second half but the game continued to be on a knife edge all the way to the end. Kerry lost Patrice Diggin to a second yellow card in the 26th minute of the second half but led late on following a Rachel McCarthy goal. Credit to Limerick they hit the equaliser just before the final whistle leaving it 2-06 apiece. Blitz for the 16’s: Kerry’s u16’s travelled to Mallow on Sunday and were very unlucky to lose to both Tipperary and Limerick by a point. It was a great effort by the girls. Fundraising Weekend: This weekend is a vital one for the fundraising efforts of the Kerry Camogie County Board. The Church gate collection is on Sunday and Monday at masses in St Mary’s Church Listowel while the Golf Classic is on in Ballyheigue Castle Golf Course on Saturday 13th with limited tee times. John Mitchels are delighted to announce their first ever Strictly Come Dancing Competition. This will be held in Ballygarry House Hotel on Sunday October 30th 2016 commencing at 8.00 p.m. with Doors opening at 7.00 pm and there will be 12 couples taking part. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,6,9 and 11 and the next jackpot will be e7,300 with the draw taking place in Keanes Bar this Sunday. Juveniles: The u12 mixed team will be competing in the u12 Crental Region competition starting this Sunday at 6pm. The provisional fixture is against Realt Na Mara in

Blennerville. The u16’s played Knock /Brosna in the Lee Strand County League last Wednesday in Blennerville and won 2-12 to 3-08. Seniors: The Seniors play in the County League this Saturday evening, August 13th with a home tie against St Senan’s. Throw in is at 7pm. Ladies Team: St Pat’s Ladies training starts this Friday at 7.30pm. The club congratulates Kieran ‘The Kicker’ Hurley and his victorious Kerry junior teammates on their win. STACKS UNDERAGE NEWS: Football is back on Sunday’s and Thursdays for the u6/8’s and u10’s. The u12 Division 1A and 1B will play Ballymac and Ardfert in their next games. The u14’s put up a good showing against An Ghaeltacht in the u14 Final with the u16’s had a comfortable in their last Lee Strand County League Division 1. The Tralee side were winners 6-16 to 3-03. The u16 B’s went down 7-04 to 3-11 in a cracking game away to Filemore/Valentia/ Skellig. There semi-final is set for Wednesday 17th. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS The short trip to Austin Stack Park was not a happy one in this re-arranged Senior County League Division 1 clash. The Stacks ran out winners 1-15 to 1-05. A Kevin Walshe goal saw the half time score of 1-0 to 0-07 points but from then on it was all Stacks. The Seniors play Kenmare away this weekend with the hope of a full squad on duty. In the Junior Town League Strand Road play Na Gaeil next Monday while the minors are set to face Na Gaeil on August 18th. Club registration is set for August 20th and requests for Croke Park tickets cannot be considered if membership is unpaid. The Summer Camp will take place from August 15th with a cost of e20. The underage teams are training at the usual times as do the underage Girls teams and the Ladies team. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 1,3,27 and 32 and the next jackpot will be e3,500. ON THE GREEN’S: Tralee: In the Men’s competition Tom G O’Mahony was the winner with 32 points followed by Gerard O’Sullivan and Sean Carmody. Liam Hussey was 4th and Sean O’Keeffe 5th with Graham Spring taking the Best Gross and John P Enright the 18+ Handicap section. In the Senior Ladies competition Nora Lehane took the win from Joan Kelly and Mary Barrett. In the Open Day 3 person Am Am sponsored by the Ballyroe Heights Hotel the winners were Kitty O’Reilly, Anne Dwyer and Lorraine O’Dwyer. Second was Mary Geaney, Shelia Crowley and Marion Cahillane with the team of Nora Lehane, Anne Heffernan and Anna Cotter in third.
