WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...

ARTHUR J. THINKS INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE IS A RISKY AND CHAOTIC UNION Labour TD Arthur Spring, has warned that the Independent Alliance in government would result in a coalition of chaos for Ireland. Deputy Spring said: “Ireland needs stability and balance with Labour in Government, not a gamble on an uncertain future. “With the Independent Alliance, people are risking voting for the unknown as they have no whip, no costed policies and no coherent economic plan for Ireland’s future. “Dramatically divergent views exist within their alliance, with ex Fianna Fáilers, ex Green Party, ex Worker’s Party candidates being led by Shane Ross who has flip-flopped from the right to the left and back again. “How they could govern a country, never mind a loose political alliance is unclear. Shane Ross has admitted that he would love to be in Cabinet but that the Alliance hasn’t decided how it would select ministers. “It’s laughable that their so called ‘new politics’ is attracting a number of ex-Fianna Fáilers. “By contrast, Labour in Government has left the county in far better shape than we found it in 2011. The recovery is now in full bloom, and Ireland is the fastest growing economy in the EU. “Our public finances are in rude health and our public debt has been brought firmly under control. More than 1,000 new jobs are being created every week. New and exciting apprenticeships are being created for our young people and the Government is working hard to bring emigrants home. “This month, all workers are taking home more pay because of USC reductions. Child Benefit is increasing by €5 to help every family. And the State pension is increasing by €3 a week to help older people.”

TROLLEY NUMBERS AT KERRY GENERAL HOSPITAL ARE UP TO FOUR TIMES HIGHER THAN AT THIS TIME LAST YEAR Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris has described as “disgraceful” news that the number of people waiting on trolleys at Kerry General Hospital is four times higher than at this time last year. Deputy Ferris said the worsening situation in Kerry completely contradicts the comments of Health Minister Leo Varadkar in which he claimed that the conditions, causing the crisis in our hospitals, are improving. Martin Ferris TD said; “Last week, 56 patients were lying on trolleys in Kerry General Hospital. Yesterday, 16 people found themselves in this distressing situation. The numbers are up to four times higher than during the same period last year. “It is shocking that Minister Varadkar is claiming that conditions are improving. The reality for patients is that the crisis is only getting worse. His remarks show just how detached the Minister is from the scale of the chaos and overcrowding that is gripping hospitals throughout the state. “Minister Varadkar is dismally failing to address the underlying causes of the crisis. Disgracefully, instead of doing his job, he has attempted to lay the blame for the crisis at the feet of heroic nurses who have worked through the Minister’s slash and burn approach to the health service. The Minister is more focused on trying to spin himself out of responsibility rather than on actually tackling the crisis. “The crisis will only continue to worsen so long as we have Health Minister who is more focused on optics, PR lines and re-election than he is on running the Department of Health and prioritising patient care. “It is long past time that the Fine Gael and Labour Party government accepted the scale of the crisis. “The first step now must be to engage constructively with the nurses to ensure that their concerns are addressed and that we see tangible changes in our hospitals as a result. “We also need a government that is prepared to invest in our health service and in the delivery of frontline care. “The two-tier system can no longer be tolerated. People must have access to quality healthcare on the basis of need and not on the level of their income.” 4

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: THE NEW PRSI CREDIT Question I earn €377 a week and pay Class A PRSI on my earnings. Will I get the new PRSI credit? Answer Starting on 1 January 2016, a new Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) credit applies to earnings between €352.01 and €424 per week. (If you earn less than €352 you do not pay any PRSI.) Previously people who earned very little more than €352 had to pay 4% PRSI on all their earnings. The new credit will reduce the amount of PRSI you have to pay. The credit is tapered and the amount of the credit depends on your earnings. The maximum credit is €12. For example, if you earn €352.01 per week, you will get the maximum PRSI credit of €12. On these earnings of €352.01, your PRSI charge (calculated at 4% of your earnings) would be €14.08. After the €12 credit is deducted, you will pay PRSI of €2.08 instead. If you earn between €352.01 and €424 per week, the maximum credit of €12 is reduced by one-sixth of the amount of your weekly earnings over €352.01. You work out how much PRSI you will pay in four steps. First, calculate one-sixth of your earnings over €352.01. Then subtract this from the maximum credit of €12 to get your PRSI credit. Then calculate the basic PRSI charge at 4% of your earnings. Finally, deduct your PRSI credit from the PRSI charge. The result is the amount of PRSI you pay. For example, for gross weekly earnings of €377: 1. One-sixth of your earnings over €352.01 is €377€352.01 = €24.99, divided by 6 = €4.17. 2. Subtract this from the maximum credit of €12, giving you a credit of €7.83. 3. The basic PRSI charge is 4% of €377 = €15.08. 4. You will pay €7.25 PRSI weekly in 2016 (€15.08 minus your €7.83 PRSI credit). TRALEE TRALEE CITIZENS CITIZENS INFORMATION CENTRE CENTRE INFORMATION Opening Opening Hours: Hours:

DAMIEN & AOIFE FROM E FITNESS KEEP KERRY STARS ON TRACK!

Since opening their doors at John Mitchels Sports Complex, Ballyseedy in 2015 , Damien Ryall and Aoife Newell have worked with people from all types of sporting backgrounds .Here is a taste of the feedback they have received from some of their more high-profile clients . ‘Damien has provided me with a top notch training and gym program that is second to none. He has tailored my program and made it specific for my needs as I look forward to the 2016 season with Kerry. Even the most seasoned will find this program a gem. Through his coaching and knowledge he has provided me with a great program and he is able to create the perfect balance between my gym program and my on field training program. This in turn will help me to achieve my peak in terms of physical fitness for 2016. I strongly believe that Damiens exercises are not a chore but something I really enjoy doing while also being very effective and challenging and keeps me coming back for more. Thank You very much to Damien and his team at E Fitness’ – Marc O Se (Kerry Footballer) ‘Since Damien has come on board with the Kerry team I have been working closely with him over the last eight weeks. His dedication, effort and attention to detail have been outstanding and I am feeling the benefits every day. I know he will get me to where I need to be for the 2016 season and I look forward to it with great excitement.’ – Kieran Donaghy (Kerry Footballer) ‘Following a shoulder injury I was advised to contact Damien and Aoife to get a strengthening programme designed to speed up my recovery. Over the past 12 weeks since I started with E-Fitness, I have noticed a significant improved in my overall strength and conditioning both on dry land and also in the water. The increased strength and flexibility has allowed me to become more efficient and stronger in my swimming stroke rate meaning faster times. God : Take this cotton robe and enter the Kingdom of heaven. Priest : God, how come that foul mouthed, rash driver gets a gold robe & I spent all my life preaching good will and get a cotton robe ?. God : Results, my son, results. While you preached, people slept, when he drove, people really prayed... “Its Performance, not Position that Counts !!

DOG LOOKING FOR A JOB.

A dog walks into a job center, goes up to the woman at the desk and says, ‘Good afternoon, miss. I’m looking for work.’ The woman looks up, amazed, and says, ‘Good heavens, a talking dog! Er... well, let’s try the circus in town. I’ll give them a ring.’ The dog says, ‘The circus? What on earth would the circus do with a computer programmer?’

“BOWIE TRIBUTE A MUST “ THIS WEEKEND AT BROGUE EIGHTIES NIGHT WITH CHRIS SHORTT What could be a better way to kick off the very popular 80’s Night in the Brogue this Saturday night than with a tribute section to

“The Thin White Duke “ David Bowie who passed away earlier in the week . “Its quite a momentous sad occasion “ says local favourite DJ Chris Shortt . Its up there with the passing of Elvis & Buddy Holly . I grew up listening to the many forms that Bowie presented himself to us all . From his early 70s hits such as Young Americans , Rebel Rebel , Starman and the great Jean Genie . He then seemed to disappear off the radar until he reinvented himself again coming back with his Serious Moonlight Tour in 1982 launching memorable hits such as Lets Dance , Modern Love , China Girl and the Liveaid hit with Mick Jagger “Dancing in the Streets . He was the absolute master of presentation, just take a look at his fashion sense in all his various videos . He was a leader in this regard rather than a follower . I was an eighties child , growing up as a teenager while listening to some of the most influential music and bands of the last century . Ska such as Madness, Bad Manners ..New Romantics such as Spandau Ballet Adam Ant Ultravox, Electropop such as Human league , Depeche Mode , OMD , Yazoo .Its going to be another great 80s night in the Brogue and a great way to kick off 2016 ....And of course I will be delighted to have the best excuse ever this Saturday night in the Brogue to play my tribute to “the man who finally fell to earth “

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... JRI LAUNCH CONFIRMS TRALEE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Fine Gael TD for Kerry and Minister of State, Jimmy Deenihan, performing the official opening of JRI America’s new, state-of-theart offices at Kerry Technology Park. Speaking at the event, Minister Deenihan said: “Back in 2011 when I announced the establishment of JRI America’s software development operation, I strongly believed that the location of Tralee would serve them well, in terms of acquiring the skilled workforce needed and benefitting from the business-friendly environment that exists here. “I’m very gratified to see that this has proven the case and that, with these new 14,000 square foot offices, the company is planning strategically for further development into the future. “That growth is expected to see the workforce expand from its current level of, I understand, almost 70 people. That is terrific news for Tralee and for the wider region. “The company’s success here has allowed it to add additional functions to its development and quality assurance operations too, expanding into engineering, operations and information security. This all bodes well for the company’s future in Tralee. “When it comes to Foreign Direct Investment, Kerry has traditionally been a centre of manufacturing, however in recent years it has proved challenging to maintain that and to attract overseas manufacturing companies into Kerry. The stark reality is that much of this manufacturing investment globally is going to low cost destinations such as Eastern and Central Europe and China. “The challenge for us is to work to attract the kind of investment that will succeed and can be sustained here. Companies like JRI America are invaluable to us in this regard. Having an international financial services company of this calibre shows that Tralee and the region is an eminently suitable location for such business activity and will help to attract other companies in the financial services space.

MERCY MOUNTHAWK SLEEPOUT NEXT THURSDAY

“I am writing on behalf of my YSI group from Mercy Mounthawk. The name of our group is ‘The Road Home’ because we intend to raise awareness of the major issue that is homelessness and hopefully play some part in preventing it. We, as a group, believe that the first step in understanding what homelessness feels like we should experience it for ourselves. Therefore as a group we are going to have a sleep out. We will be sleeping outdoors on the grounds of Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School Tralee on Thursday the 21-01-2016 from 6pm until 1pm the next day. We will have parents and teachers chaperoning, sleeping bags and food but it will be as raw and as close to the real experience as we can possibly make it. We have been involved in other events such as our school open day as well as hosting a table tennis tournament which we used to raise funding, but this is only the beginning to the things we hope to do in order to raise awareness and hopefully make a change in our town and hopefully who knows? Maybe beyond! We also have support from public figures and politicians such as John Drummey and Minister Jimmy Deenihan but would hugely appreciate help from the general public. Some ways that can help are: You can help by donating on the 22nd in Manor West shopping centre and Tralee town where members of our YSI group will be collecting money which we will donate to Focus Ireland. A charity that works to prevent people from becoming or remaining homeless. Also help by following us on our social media pages such as Instagram ‘theroadhome2016’,Facebook ‘The Road Home’ and Twitter ‘theroadhome2016’. Get involved and help “The Road Home” to help those in the terrible situation that is homelessness. Contact us through our pages and help make a change!” Katie Ryan

FIGHTING FATIGUE

Life is definitely more hectic than it once was and whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, everyone seems to be looking for more energy. Of Course, if you are suffering from serious fatigue you should pay your GP a visit to rule out any medical issue which may be causing your symptoms. Some people may struggle with complete exhaustion where they feel every muscle in their body is aching, but for most people it may not be this severe but they still struggle to cope and function on a daily basis. Concentration, tolerance and coping levels may also be affected; and even the smallest things seem to aggravate you! A healthy balanced diet is essential. Never skip breakfast (or any meal), as your body has been fasting over night and needs a jolt to get the day started. This also kick starts your metabolism. Avoid foods high in sugar as they will give you a sudden “burst of energy” but will also result in a rapid drop in energy leaving you feeling exhausted. Some other key things to remember are: • Sleep: May sound obvious. Aim for seven to eight hours a night and ensure you are relaxed before going to bed. If possible a nap for 20-30minutes during the day may also help. • Exercise: It really does help. A brisk walk will leave you feeling more energised, not less. • Drink water throughout the day: Even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and life-less • Watch your stress levels: Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling physically and mentally exhausted regardless of how much sleep you get. • While these lifestyle changes are guaranteed to make a difference to your energy levels in the long term, there are also some excellent supplements which will help you! Some of these include: • Co-enzyme Q10: Your cells use it to produce energy • Tyrosine: Ideally taken during periods of low motivation and poor concentration, helps to focus the mind. (not suitable if you have high blood pressure) • Passiflora: Tincture which may help alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety • Melissa: Combination of relaxing herbs together with magnesium to relax and L-Theanine – just 2 tables 1 hour before bed to aid a restful night’s sleep. Drinking water • B Vitamin: A good quality B Complex (which contains all of your essential B Vitamins) is a must. It helps through-out the day raise your tolerance levels and coping capabilities; also helps energy levels. Talk 1 every morning after can help fight fatigue breakfast. • Omega 3: Your body needs the “Good Fats” to function. If your diet is deficient then supplement with a good fish oil, such as Eskimo, MorEPA or Krill, choose from liquid or capsules If you are currently on medication some of these remedies may not be suitable so always ask us and we will advise you on products to suit. Until next time, stay healthy.

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO EVERYONE! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! Fasted cardio is basically doing cardio first thing in the morning before you eat anything. It is good for people who want a lot of fat loss as it burns extra fat. I try to do fasted cardio once or twice a week just to change things up for my body. So the big question is, why does fasted cardio work? In simple terms, fasted cardio works because when you are exercising first thing in the morning the energy that is used during your cardio will come from the breaking down of fat that you already have. Since you have not eaten, this is your body’s only available energy source. When you eat before your cardio, your body’s first energy source will be the food that you have consumed. For this reason, fasted cardio is often used to lose those last few pounds that you just can’t get rid of. While expert opinions are still indecisive about whether or not fasted cardio is worth it or not, I really believe it is something that you have to try for yourself. Every body is different and each person’s body will react differently. So I challenge you to give it a try and you may just be surprised what fasted cardio can do for you

FOOD TIPS TO START THE NEW YEAR There’s no point trying to go from eating whatever you want to saying you’ll eat 100% clean in a week. You’ll get discouraged, and end up binging on whatever bad food you can get your hands on! So instead of cutting everything out straight away here’s a few tips: DRINK WATER: Start small, aim for 2 litres a day at first, then up it from there. Water really does flush out your system and it does wonders for your skin. Also our body can sometimes confuse dehydration for hunger. SWAP COFFEE FOR GREEN TEA: Did you know that green tea has more caffeine than coffee? And it is SO much better for you and has SO many benefits. Swap your morning coffee for a green tea and you’ll have more energy. EAT SMALLER MEALS OFTEN: Instead of having 3 big meals a day, try 6 small ones. It keeps your metabolism going and keeps you from binging.

Boil the cooking liquid until thickened and reduced to 2 1/2 cups, about 10 minutes. Discard the bay leaf and thyme. TORQUING CARS! TOP MARQUES SHORTLISTED FOR CAR OF THE YEAR TITLE

Seven new cars have made it onto the shortlist for the prestigious Car of the Year award in Europe. The seven are: Audi A4; BMW 7-series; Jaguar XE;Mazda MX-5; Opel Astra; Skoda Superb; and Volvo XC90. In what is likely to be a very interesting competition this year, the shortlisted finalists offer a range of propositions, from excellent value for money, to modern tech and luxury refinement and finally to oldschool driving fun. It includes a battle between two direct rivals, the Audi A4 and Jaguar XE. The award for the best new car launched each year, now in its 52 year, is judged over a 12 month process by 58 jury members from 22 European countries. Member publications in the award include Auto (Italy); Autocar (UK); Autopista (Spain); Stern (Germany). This reporter is the Irish jury member for the awards. Along with media-wide test events during the year, several independent test sessions are organised by the jury members to test the cars, the most significant taking place in a rural area of northern Denmark in the autumn. That session, running for a week and involving more than 40 car models and variants also includes tests at a closed airfield, where safety equipment is tested and dynamic handling characteristics are measured. In February jurors will gather again to put the seven finalists through their paces at the Ceram teset track at Mortefontaine, outside Paris. The independent technical test facility is rented by jury members and cars undergo a range of driving and dynamic tests during the sessions. The final vote to determine the single winner will be cast on late February 2016. Each juror will apportion 25 points among at least five nominees and will state his/her voting criteria. The winner will be revealed on the eve of theGeneva Motorshow

TOYOTA SET FOR UPHILL PRIUS BATTLE IN CHEAP OIL ERA

The makeover of Toyota, the largest car group, under chief executive Akio Toyoda is facing one of its biggest tests with the launch of the new Prius. Analysts warn that the remodelling of the hybrid car - which has been a pioneer in fuel-saving technology since its 1997 debut - could not have had worse timing. With Brent crude breaching the $40-a-barrel mark for the first time since February 2009, fuel-hungry sports utility vehicles are back in vogue, softening consumer demand for fuel-efficient smaller cars. “Toyota wants to make hybrids, not just the de facto standard in Japan but also overseas,” said Masahiro Akita, car analyst at Credit Suisse. “There is concern about whether the new Prius will sell well outside Japan against the headwind of lower oil prices.” Executives boast that the fourth-generation Prius, which went on sale in Japan yesterday, is a testimony to Mr Toyoda’s attempt to build funkier, fun-to-drive cars by fundamentally reviewing the way the company manufactures and designs its vehicles. Mitsuhisa Kato, Toyota executive vice-president, said: “This Prius is the beginning of an ongoing, long challenge to develop ever better cars.” The Japanese carmaker said it was aiming for annual global sales of up to 350,000 Prius vehicles, of which roughly 144,000 units are expected to be sold in Japan. The company has already received pre-orders for about 60,000 vehicles, with consumers likely to wait up to five months for the cars to arrive. While scepticism was also strong when the Prius first hit the market in 1997, the carmaker has since sold more than 8m units of gasoline-electric hybrids. The segment, including plug-in hybrids, accounted for about 14 per cent of its car and truck sales last year, and nearly half of its sales at home. But consumers now have a wider option of advanced, eco-friendly cars including electric vehicles by Tesla and Nissan as well as a fuel-cell vehicle launched by Toyota. Diesel vehicles were also popular before the emissions scandal at Volkswagen. The new Prius achieves mileage of 40.8 kilometres per litre under Japanese tests, a 20 per cent improvement on the current model. However, Mr Kato says that fuelsaving technology is no longer the only selling point for the Prius. The hybrid is the first model to adopt revamped vehicle platforms and components, which are expected to cover half of Toyota’s vehicles by 2020. Analysts say the project, called Toyota New Global Architecture, is an attempt to redefine the spine of its production system to meet global trends for quality, cheaper cars. Toyota claims that the system will cut development costs by 20 per cent through a sharing of parts and platforms across continents. For the new Prius body, engineers used sturdy but lighter steel sheets for the body and lowered the centre of gravity for more precise and nimble steering, while engine noise and the door’s closing sound are reduced. But even Mr Kato appears to be less confident on whether the emotional appeal of the redesigned Prius will override the economics of buying a hybrid car during an era of cheap oil prices. “We are confident, but at the same time we are worried, since consumers are different [OVERSEAS],” he said. The Prius, which has a starting price of €31,450 in Ireland should go on sale early in 2016. (Financial Times )

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BRENDAN HOGAN APPOINTED KERRY U17 MANAGER: These are hugely exciting times for Kerry soccer as the countdown is on for the debut of the counties team in the U17 League of Ireland. After being granted the place in the League the KDL set about appointing a manager to take charge of the team, which will kick off its League campaign in March. The KDL this week announced the appointment of Brendan Hogan to the position. Brendan was the manager of the history making Kennedy Cup team last summer and has been at the forefront of putting the Emerging Talent Structures in place for the Schoolboys and Girls League. Speaking at the appointment KDL Chairman Sean O’Keeffe said that the KDL were delighted with the appointment. “The League is delighted to have Brendan in place as manager as manager of the Kerry u17 team in the SSE Airtricity League and we wish him every success. He comes to the position with an intimate knowledge of the Schoolboys game in Kerry and a wide knowledge of the players that are in the age bracket to be considered for the squad”. Brendan takes up his position immediately and this Friday night, January 15th , he is holding an open trial at Mounthawk Park for players born in 1999/ 2000. SO WHO WILL BE THE 2015 KERRY SPORT STAR AWARD WINNERS? We live in a sports mad county but not just that we live in a county that produces some of the country’s top sports stars and in a diversity of sports. The winners of 33 categories that make up the Kerry Sports Stars will be announced at a gala banquet and awards night in the Malton Hotel on January 29th. This is the third year of the initiative to honour both high profile and less publicised sports which is once again run by Event Director Ken O’Day and his son Robin. It is difficult to write this column without giving too much away as I am one of the judges of the Awards and something that doesn’t happen too often now – the youngest judge! The three wise men that make up the judging panel are legendary sports journalist and broadcaster Murt Murphy and multi award winner Weeshie Fogarty. And it was not an easy process as in a number of categories there were a number of sports persons that could have been given the nod. However after lots of discussions we are very happy with our choices. While there will be the usual sports honoured like the GAA, soccer, basketball, greyhounds and golf there will also be awards to high achievers in weight lifting, swimming , cycling, darts, rowing and rallying as well as a Special Olympic award. Categories are split into national and international sections and as well as these there will be a number of special awards and for the first time a Juvenile section. Much of the attention on the night will be to

see who will win the Special Achievement Awards, the Supreme Sports Star award and the O’Day Perpetual Shield. Event Director Ken O’Day said that the Kerry Sports Star Awards are becoming an important date on the sporting calendar and also will benefit a very worthy cause. “The success of the first two years has put the event on a great footing and cementing this is the fact the over 25 of the sponsors have remained with us for the three years. This year we are also will be making a presentation to the Valentia Life Boat service who do such great work. “We hope that all the Award winners will be supported by family and friends and fans on the night as we aim to make the Awards as glitzy an event as possible. It is an all ticket affair and anyone looking for tickets should ring me on 087 2048677. Our sports stars put a huge amount of work and effort in during their seasons and deserve to be honoured. We are delighted to be in a position to be able to organize the night and we know that once again the Kerry sporting public will come out and support them”. ST BRENDAN’S INTO NATIONAL FINAL: Kerry sides reaching All Ireland deciders is nothing new but still it is a huge achievement and a huge thrill for the club and team involved. The latest on the long list of such high achievers is the St Brendan’s Basketball club. In the weekends semi-final of the Hula Hoops Men’s National Intermediate Club Championship they defeated Cork Celts 68-57. The game was played in Portlaoise and over 70 fans travelled to support the side. There was a tense start to the game by both sides and Cork Celts physical game unnerved the Tralee side in the first quarter. Great inside work by Paul McMahon and both Donaghy’s Kieran and Conor kept St Brendan’s in touch and they only trailed by 5 as the game entered the second period. St Brendan’s then upped their defence and got their shooting game going with Michael O’Donnell and Rob Mulcahy finding their range and this saw the Tralee side open up an 8 point gap at the half. Cork Celts battled hard in the third but St Brendan’s stayed ahead and were 6 up after 3 quarters 49-43 and while Cork Celts closed the gap to 2 points a perfectly timed time-out saw then take control and eventually run out 11 point winners. Kieran Donaghy showed his class ending with 22 points followed by Fergal O’Sullivan on 19 and Mike O’Donnell on 10. One of St Brendan’s big positives is their spread of scoring and in the semi-final they had 8 players on the score sheets which all bodes well for the final and the possibility of another All Ireland title coming to Kerry. They will play BC Leixlip Nemunas in the final at the end of the month with the game expected to be played on Friday night January

Friday 15th January 2016

29th. STAYING WITH ST BRENDAN’S: The good weekend continued for the Tralee club as their u14 Boys team won the Cup defeating St Mary’s 24-20. The Tralee boys had a score to settle after their Castleisland counterparts got the better of them in the League and in the Blitz. However in the Cup decider they were led by a huge game from Tadgh Reen whose rebounding was the key to victory. Rap Buivydas was deservingly awarded the MVP ending with 16 points. U14 Division 3 Pool A: The u14 boys Division 3 side travelled to Castleisland to play the League leaders but went down 33-44 despite a big effort. Baskets from Liam Kingston, Garry Lynch and Daniel Bowler had the Tralee side ahead 18-11 at the break. However St Mary’s upped the tempo and by the end of the third quarter the game was tied 28 all. St Mary’s defence was now on top and there was no way back for St Brendan’s. Top scorer was Garry Lynch on 11 followed by Graham Sheehy on 5 and Liam Kingston, Jack Clapham and Ryan McHugh with 4 points. Other results were in Boys u16 Division 1 Glenbeigh 34-57 St Brendan’s, Boys u16 Division 3 Plate Gneeveguilla 50-35 St Brendan’s and finally in Boys U16 Division 3 St Brendan’s 32 Tralee Tigers 30. GARVEY’S HOME AGAIN: Team Garvey’s fixture list in the Women’s Division 1 was certainly a tale of two halves. They were on the road for much of the first half of the season and are now on a run of home games. They have put themselves well in contention for a play-off place but need to make sure they keep taking advantage of home court advantage. There next opportunity is this Saturday evening at 7.30pm when the face the side directly above them in the table Oblate Dynamos in Mounthawk. Both sides have 6 wins from their 10 games played so a win here is vital as they try and secure a Top 4 spot. RACINGS BACK TO 3 NIGHTS A WEEK AT THE TRACK: Racing is back to 3 nights at the Kingdom Grayhound stadium from this week with the action starting on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.50pm. The highlight on Saturday night is the semi-finals of the Francie O’Donoghue Memorial. The Track reminds all interested that the GMHD.ie Insurances Killarney Juvenile classic starts on February 12th and if owners / trainers want to arrange trials they should call the Racing Office on 061 448057. Qualifying trials take place every week on Monday’s from 10 to 11am and on Tuesday nights after racing. Unrecorded trials take place on Wednesday from 3 to 7pm and on Thursday and Saturday’s from 9am to 12 noon with all times bookable. JOE FLYNN R.I.P. Mark Leen wrote: I woke this morning around 330 am, I was thinking about my great pal Joe Flynn i prayed the Rosary for Joe and fell back to sleep, i got a shock when i read he had passed this morning, after the bravest battle I’d witnessed in many a long day against Cancer. I’m looking around the house at the many things Joe painted and drew, so sad to hear this, expected but still a shock and a huge loss to Tralee and everyone who knew and loved him. My deepest condolences to Breda Flynn and the family, God rest your gentle soul Joe, may St Padre Pio and the Angels be there to greet you my friend. Con Dennehy wrote: Joe was a gentleman, a loving family man and a great community man. He did so much good in a very quiet way for many people over the years. His inspiring spirit and bravery over the past few weeks helped many others on their long and difficult road with cancer. He has given us all a wonderful legacy including the need to fight, smile, have a laugh and love family and friends even in our darkest moments. Joe had a smile that endeared him to all he came in contact with. May he rest in peace and for those he left behind they can, in time, celebrate a wonderful and magical life that Joe shared with them.
