TECHNOLOGY CORNER Billy O Meara (HRI Services)
Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Question: I have Sky Television and I am finding it very expensive What are my options? Billy says: You could install a Free to air system which would give you Most of the English Stations Including Sky News The new free to air system now come with seven-day guide and will automatic update the channel frequency’s. Just to point out that RTE and TV3 are not free on satellite so you will need a Saorview Aerial and a saorview compatible Television or set top box. Question: Can I record with free to air systems also has it got series Link? Billy says: Yes, you can now get free to air systems that will give you all the functions similar to Sky for example record one channel while watching another also it will give you the option of series link. Again since the Irish channels are not free on satellite you will not be able to use this box to record them. RTE Player and TV3 Player is a great way to look back on what you have missed. Latest Technology News: SKY Q Sky has unveiled what it calls the 'next generation' of home TV with the release of a new Sky Box called Sky Q. The new features are you will be able to record four programs at the same time and watch another. You will also to be able to stream programs throughout the house using your Wi-Fi using a Sky Q Mini box. This is not a replacement for the existing sky+hd box. The new box is aimed at the premium subscriptions package; prices have not been released yet. Question I’m getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and am really interested in working with food. I found a café near me that is willing to offer me a job. They have asked me to do a food safety (HACCP) course first but I can’t afford the course fee. Is there any help with this? Answer You should talk to your Department of Social Protection (DSP) case officer about a Training Support Grant. This scheme can give you quick access to short-term training that will help you take up a work opportunity. Your DSP case officer can approve a grant under this scheme where: • A training need is identified that is not provided by DSP directly or any other State provider and is not available quickly or in a suitable location. • The intervention identified is linked to both the activation needs of the jobseeker and labour market conditions. • The intervention is part of the agreed personal progression or action plan to enter or re-enterwork. • They are satisfied that you have provided reasonable evidence or grounds of need (for example, in the form of a job offer or of a potential job offer) or an identified skill gap or a requirement to maintain or achieve accreditation (for example, safe pass, driving licences, HACCP, security industry permits). You can get funding of up to €500 a year under the scheme. (However the maximum contribution that can be approved and paid for essential driver training is €250.) You need to provide a quotation from the training provider. Generally the grant is paid after you have finished the programme, done the relevant assessments and achieved certification.

Footage is being filmed this month at various locations and will air on NBC television in New York during its live coverage of the St Patrick’s Day parade in New York. The NBC crew was invited here by Tourism Ireland in partnership with Fáilte Ireland. The NBC broadcast on 17 March will highlight Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way. Filming took place in Portmagee and included an interview with John O’Sullivan at the Skellig Experience Visitor Centre. The crew stayed at The Moorings Guesthouse in Portmagee. Coverage of the St Patrick’s Day parade on NBC will be sponsored by Tourism Ireland once again this year. SPRING WELCOMES €4 MILLION FUNDING ALLOCATION FOR STORM DAMAGED REGIONAL AND LOCAL ROADS
Arthur J. Spring has welcomed the allocation of €4 million to Kerry County Council to urgently address damaged regional and local roads following recent winter storms. The funding will be provided immediately to the council to begin urgent repair to regional and local road. “I welcome the funding for Kerry roads after a particularly severe winter period which has badly damaged roads across the county” Arthur Spring commented. “I would urge Kerry County Council to begin works immediately as roads have been left in a left state following the unprecedented number of severe storm and heavy rainfall in recent months” Deputy Spring added. Nationally an allocation of €8 million is being provided to Transport Infrastructure Ireland for works on national roads and a further €8 million is being allocated to Irish Rail for repairs to rail infrastructure which will also be of benefit to the county. In total Labour Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD will provide funding of €106 million nationally via the Department of Transport this year to address storm and flooding damage that was caused to transport infrastructure in recent months. €85 million will be allocated to local authorities immediately with the remainder to be allocated in May 2016.
PART TWO OF THE ELECTION TRAIL ....THE LIGHTER SIDE
The canvass has finally drawn to a close – and thank God will be the response of many to that. It has been a gruelling few months for all involved. So, how would they evaluate it all? Well, obviously meeting voters face-to-face is a major factor, otherwise why would party leaders bother to venture outside party headquarters? But I put it to those with whom I journeyed, which would they regard as the more fruitful – the old-fashioned door-to-door canvass or meeting people out-and-about. All were unanimous – meeting the voter on their own turf. As Donal Corcoran of Renua put it, when you approach a person on the street, the dynamic is automatically that you’re trying to sell them something. John Brassil of Fianna Fail always finds that people are more comfortable in their own space, and they will engage and tell you more. Martin Ferris of Sinn Fein would be of the same opinion, but says he has also found social media an emerging forum proving highly valuable for gauging attitudes. Not that I noticed the Tralee voter as being shy out in public either! Walking about the centre with Arthur Spring, I was surprised by how many people approached him – and congenially. Contrary to the nationwide perception of the Labour Party, there was no roaring of expletives from passing cars, only waves. Martin Ferris was very well received when I tagged along, but the not answering of doors in a poorly-lit estate was an issue, which is why urban decline features prominently on the Sinn Fein list of concerns. The weather has left the humble poster more high-profile than usual, and I asked for views on scrapping them altogether: party people were largely receptive to the idea, but Donal Corcoran confessed that as a low-profile player, he needs the exposure of the roadside picture. This is a viewpoint understood by an incumbent like Ferris, who himself pointed out how the lesser known can rely on it. The issues that I saw raised were ones that apparently featured more in Tralee than in the rural areas, and jobs was the main one, and how the IDA has let down Tralee. Of those with whom I was out this past week, three have personal experience in business, with Corcoran having an especially raw time. They naturally felt that this allows the self-employed to relate further, and as Brassil phrased it, to understand that they are ‘living in the real world’. The season allowed a very narrow time to canvass: people were out at work, and come dark, many simply would not answer. And that was frustrating for those running, but they kept going. Candidates admitted that a great deal of the electorate is simply bored. But the phenomenon of negative comments sellotaped by people to their doors had virtually disappeared. In a selfish sense, I could confess to nearly being disappointed by the response of the Tralee people: the entertainment of screeching or the flinging of kitchen utensils did not feature. I didn’t witness one candidate being injured, or even threatened with injury! The reception was calm. It’s when you’re out there that you appreciate the effort that goes in to campaigns, and all sixteen will have worked tirelessly. It is simply unfortunate that only five will get past the post. 8

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... HISTORIC VISIT AS TIM AND THERESA KELLIHER AND FAMILY WELCOME KATIE TAYLOR TO KELLIHERS
BALLYDUFF FARMER FIRST TO INSTALL DELAVAL ‘HERD NAVIGATOR™’
A Kerry farmer has become the first in the Republic of Ireland to install a new farm management system which could revolutionise the face of dairy farming. The O’Hanlon family have lived and worked on Golden Hill Farm since 1876 and currently keep a dairy herd of 130 animals with plans for further expansion. According to 40 year old Johnny O’Hanlon who runs the farm along with his parents, Gerard and Ann, the recently installed DeLaval ‘Herd Navigator™’ system is going to generate a new stream of valuable information regarding animal health and productivity which will be invaluable to his business. “If milk prices drop, you have to do what you’re doing more profitably. By being able to identify potential problems before they actually manifest themselves, we can reduce spend on antibiotics, keep our milk output constant and of the highest quality. It allows us to gather information through milk samples which we would never have been able to do before. Quite simply, there is no piece of farm equipment like ‘Herd Navigator™’,” said Mr O’Hanlon. ‘Herd Navigator™’ is designed to provide producers with an enhanced overview of their entire herd whilst offering specific valuable information on individual cows. It will allow milk producers to identify significantly more cows in heat than can be seen with current heat detection aids - such as activity meters - or visual checks to spot mastitis before it affects the milk. Milk producers will also be made aware of cows affected by different metabolic disorders, such as clinical and-sub-clinical ketosis before actual symptoms are visible to the naked eye. “Herd Navigator™ is a significant innovation in herd management as the system automatically measures different components in the milk while the cow is being milked. This is undoubtedly the management tool of the future, it takes so much pressure off the farmer and delivers accurate results which will increase the financial yield from each cow by around €267 per cow per year,” said Kieran FitzGerald, VMS Solutions Manager, GB and Ireland.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... MEETING UP IN HOUSE WITH CAKES TO DIE FOR!
Last Saturday as I took my usual walk down town , all set to pick up the Irish Independent in Caballs , (Does this mean I’m a Blueshirt ?) , the decision falls upon me again as to where to have my coffee and hide away a little from the weekly running , and racing and dancing to deadlines thats involved in bringing The Tralee Advertiser to the shelves once again on Friday morning .Tralee nowadays is spoilt for choice when it comes to treating yourself to a tasty bite to eat or taking ten minutes out for a relaxing cup of coffee, maybe catch up with an old friend .Then my phone rings , and while I was initially disappointed that my self -inflicted “escape from the world for half an hour “ was under threat , I was delighted when an old friend wanted to “pick my brain over coffee” as they were trying to plan a party in the not to distant future . As I traversed the square , phone glued to one ear ( no points when you’re walking !!) ,I suggested that we meet up in “ House” , one of Tralees newest Coffee establishments , amongst other things. Just off the Square , right next to the Abbey , this rustic , retro establishment is the brainchild of Danny Leane Jnr (Not as good looking as the oul fella . says Danny Snr !) When I walked in , I could see my friend literally just staring as Gemma , the chef , cook and pastry extraordinnaire , placed, what as I can only describe as the most eye dropping desserts , cupcakes and sweet creations up on the counter . According to Danny ,” We open House from Monday to Saturday from 10-6 and think we offer something for everyone We serve a killer breakfast , with lunch & dinner all day. We have a wide range of delicious homemade desserts, prepared by Gemma on a daily basis along with freshly baked scones, muffins, cupcakes & cookies everyday . We are also available to take cake orders for any occasion big or small. and have created some very special cakes recently .” So if you fancy a bite to eat or simply want a coffee break, as I did !!! Yes .and some delicious cake.... House is the place to be. (Chris Shortt )
SIAMSA BRINGS CHILDRENS BAND “THE SPEKS “ TO TRALEE
Ireland’s only six-piece traditional Irish music band for children, the Speks, make their first visit to Co Kerry when they play in Siamsa Tire in Tralee on Saturday, 5 March at 2pm. Comprising six members: Quince, Naymon, Tommo, Pete, Ed and Rafferty, the Speks hail from a mysterious island off the coast of Co Clare called Glasses Island where everybody wears glasses! The band members love singing and playing music for children. Their 40-minute show comprises all-time favourite nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty, Twinke Twinkle Little Star, Incy Wincy Spider and many more family favourites, set to acoustic Irish traditional music. The Speks’ fan base, 2-8 year olds and their parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents, is growing month-on-month and they are looking forward to building on this when they make the trip across the Shannon to Kerry. Described as ‘Riverdance for toddlers’, they have won the prestigious Parents’ Choice music award in the US, and have received rave reviews from some of Ireland’s best-known radio presenters. Children who tune into RTE Junior will be familiar with The Speks as their music is played daily on the show. They also feature frequently on radio stations for children in the US. The group’s notoriety is gaining momentum as, having played in most counties throughout Ireland, they are now in demand for return performances. According to band member Quince .. “There’s always a great buzz of excitement in the auditorium. The noise level can be high, but that’s what our shows are about, entertaining children and encouraging them to actively participate and sing along to the nursery rhymes they know. That also applies to the parents and grandparents; they’re generally as participative as the children, which adds to the occasion, young and old in full voice.” The Speks live performance in Tralee is a not-to-be-missed musical treat. The children, and their parents, will be encouraged to clap, scream, sing and dance along as the Speks music and on-stage enthusiasm continually initiates active audience participation. If you have not yet booked a seat, you’re advised to get there fast before they’re completely sold out. 16

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SUN-DAMAGED SKIN – WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?
We all know prevention is better than cure but for some, that lesson was learned the hard way. So if you find yourself with uneven pigmentation, age spots or a noticeable lack of elasticity to your skin – what is the best recovery treatment? There are many products and over the counter skin peels available in nearly every pharmacy nationwide promising the transformation of sun damaged skin, however if you are staring in the mirror at a face that has been exposed without protection to the lethal ageing UVA &UVB rays of the sun over years than a more radical approach is necessary. A course of Ellipse Photo-rejuvenation treatment will guarantee you a smoother more even complexion by the removal of age spots and minimise redness. So how does it work? Louise Mahoney, Laser Nurse Specialist at The Sanctuary Clinic Tralee, explained how the short bursts of Intense Pulsed Light are directed at the skin and filters the light to ensure the wavelengths are absorbed in the fine blood vessels and melanin in age spots. When skin cells containing a lot of melanin or haemoglobin are treated, the target heats up and is destroyed within a few thousandths of one second! A course of between 3-6 treatments is necessary for long term results with approx. 3 week intervals. Generally the most important homecare necessary is the vigilant use of SPF daily and direct sun exposure should be avoided for a minimum of 4 weeks after treatment. For further details on this or any other treatments at The Sanctuary Clinic, please call 066 7185776

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens
Hello my beautiful friends! Happy Friday! This week on Bexblah Beauty I’m going to be talking all about my current haircare routine. A lot of the products this week are on the pricier side but I believe that paying that little bit extra on haircare is worth it.
CURRENT HAIRCARE ROUTINE Shampoo - Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo: This shampoo, designed to add moisture and protection to all hair types and excellent for dry, damaged hair really does what it says on the tin! It is sulfate & paraben free, gentle cleanses chemically treated damaged hair and protects from harsh daily environmental elements. I’ve been using this shampoo since late November and I really see a difference in my hair. It’s softer, shinier and feels better all round. Because it’s sulphate free it’s great to wash my extensions with too! It is a high end shampoo though so it’s a little pricey. I got a pack, shampoo conditioner & hair mask for €34 in TK MAXX which was a great deal they weren’t the full size 300ml bottles though, which retail at about 19.50 on BeautyMatters.ie. Conditioner - Macadamia Moisturizing Rinse: Again, I needed a good conditioner to help my hair. This is a conditioner that gently nourishes, detangles, moisturises and protects leaving hair soft, manageable and ready to style. In conjunction with the Macadamia shampoo this conditioner works a dream. You don’t need to use that much and I apply it everywhere but my scalp. The conditioner gently detangles, nourishes and protects, leaves hair soft and manageable, provides UV protection and reduces static. Hair Mask - Macadamia Deep Repair Masque : Macadamia Deep Repair Masque is a revitalizing hair reconstructor for dry, damaged hair. A combination of macadamia oil and argan oil along with tea tree oil, chamomile oil, aloe and algae extracts rejuvenate and rebuild the hair, leaving the hair deeply nourished for improved elasticity and shine with long-lasting conditioning benefits. I had heard so much about this mask and was excited to try it. It says on the bottle leave on 7 minutes but I like to leave it on overnight to really give my hair a treat, you don’t have to though it’s just I’ve really thick hair. A little goes a long way also. I use it once a week and I can really see this difference in my hair, plus it smells amazing! Hair Oil – Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Intense: My amazing hairdresser in Patricks The Hair Company recommended this for my hair. Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense is a concentrated leave-in hair oil for coarse or dry hair. It strengthens, smoothes & protects hair from breakage. The use of this hair oil for coarse and dry hair will make hair 3 times stronger while protecting it from damages due to friction from brushing and styling. You can use this on your hair anytime, as a hair mask mixed in with coconut oil or your own conditioner the night before you shower, mixed in with your conditioner in the shower, on your wet hair after the shower or on dry hair to add shine! It’s a fantastic product, smells amazing and you don’t need to use much at a time at all so it’s well worth the money, it retails at about €25-€30, which may have some of you gasping for air, but it really is amazing if your hair is in need of some serious TLC! Brush – Tangle Teezer: I don’t think I’ll ever use any hairbrush ever again. With the risk of sounding insane, my Tangle Teezer is my life, not literally but it’s amazing. When my hair gets to that ‘I’m afraid to put a brush near it stage’, which is rare I promise, it comes through those knots like a dream! It’s not harsh on wet hair either like other hairbrushes that can cause breakage. If you don’t have a Tangle Teezer, get one, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my little haul/review. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

NOTICE!
CRYOSURGERY is now available in our Clinic! What conditions can be treated with Cryosurgery? If you suffer from • Sun damaged skin • Moles, Warts or Skin tags • Early skin cancers (Bowens disease etc )
Medical & Dental Clinic
Then Cryosurgery could be for you.. WHATS INVOLVED IN THE PROCEDURE ?
Cryosurgery is normally done during the course of a routine out-patient consultation with our dermatologist. It normally does not require a local anaesthetic and procedures are generally over in a matter of seconds. After Cryosurgery has been completed, then eventually the frozen tissue thaws and it is then absorbed by the body naturally. Depending on the nature of the lesion, more than one treatment may be necessary, and this is usually repeated at regular intervals.
AND ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? One of the key benefits of Cryosurgery is that it is far less invasive than other forms of treatment as well as producing far fewer side effects. It’s also a far less expensive treatment to administer. Our dermatologist will discuss this further with you.

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FAB WEEK!
This week is all about fitness wear! I love fitness wear and there’s SO many options to choose from. I find buying new gym gear can be very motivating too which is always a plus.
SHOES
When it comes to gym shoes I ALWAYS go with Nike, don’t ask me why I just love the variety in styles. You can always find some insane bargains on Nike shoes in The Nike Factory in Killarney. That’s where I bought my current favourites, The Nike Free 4.0. They are honestly the comfiest shoes ever. I love them. I got them for about 50 euro which was such good value as they’re normally over €100!
CLOTHING
Again for clothing I am a huge fan of Nike. Their leggings are perfect for the gym as they are so comfortable and stay up too! Their sports bras are great and provide huge support. If you’re looking for some Nike gym wear head into Kayrena and the team in John Dowlings Sports in Tralee, they have some fab bits in at the moment for both men and women! Another great online clothing brand for both men and women is Alphalete Athletics, set up by YouTuber, Christian Guzman. If you remember me talking about Nikki Blakketter last week, that’s her Boyfriend, and a lot of the gym gear she wears is Alphalete, talk about a power couple eh?
Of course there are some fab gym bits in Penny’s also at the moment. I just like buying a bit higher quality gym gear as I wear it so often. So if you’re on the hunt for some new gear try The Nike Store, John Dowlings Sports, Lifestyle or any other sports shop!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! WIFE AND I NEED A VACATION. So my wife and i needed a vacation, however didn’t have the money. So I suggest that for one year every time we make love , we put $20 in a jar, at the end of the year we use the money to pay for a trip. A year goes by and we decide to count the money.. I count it and tell the wife we have $1200, but then i ask her i thought we agreed to only put $20 in the jar, why are there $50 and $100 bills? My wife replied, “not everyone is as cheap as you!!!
OLD AUNT MILDRED
Aging Aunt Mildred was a 93-year-old woman who was particularly despondent over the recent death of her husband. She decided that she would just do away with herself and join him in Paradise . Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly, she took out his old Army pistol and made the decision to aim at her heart, since it was badly broken in the first place. Not wanting to miss the vital organ and become a vegetable and a burden to someone, she called her doctor’s office to inquire as to just exactly where the heart would be on a woman. The doctor said, ‘Your heart would be just below your left breast.’ Later that night......Mildred was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her knee.
A MAN GOES TO A BROTHEL.
The madam opened the brothel door in Winnipeg and saw a rather dignified, well-dressed, good-looking man in his late forties or early fifties. “May I help you sir?” she asked. The man replied, “I want to see Valerie.” “Sir, Valerie is one of our most expensive ladies. Perhaps you would prefer someone else” said the madam. He replied, “No, I must see Valerie.” Just then, Valerie appeared and announced to the man she charged $5000 a visit. Without hesitation, the man pulled out five thousand dollars and gave it to Valerie, and they went upstairs. After an hour, the man calmly left.

The next night, the man appeared again, once more demanding to see Valerie. Valerie explained that no one had ever come back two nights in a row as she was too expensive. “There are no discounts. The price is still $5000.” Again, the man pulled out the money, gave it to Valerie, and they went upstairs. After an hour, he left. The following night the man was there yet again. Everyone was astounded that he had come for a third consecutive night, but he paid Valerie and they went upstairs. After their session, Valerie said to the man, “No one has ever been with me three nights in a row.” “Where are you from?” The man replied, “ New Brunswick .” “Really,” she said. “I have family in New Brunswick .” “I know.” the man said. “Your sister died, and I am her attorney.” “She asked me to give you your $15,000 inheritance.”

BRICKS N’ MORTAR... PRETAX PROFITS UP 194% AT BENNETT CONSTRUCTION
Pretax profits at Mullingar-based Bennett Construction, whose projects include the eBay office in Blanchardstown and Helix at DCU, rose by 194 per cent for the year ending March 2015. New accounts show the group, which also has operations in London and Berlin, posted a pretax profit of €1.54 million for the 12 months under review versus €525,925 a year earlier. Operating profit rose 166 per cent from €524,928 to €1,398 million. Turnover at the family owned firm, founded in 1917, jumped by 18.5 per cent from €81.2 million to €96.3 million with €66.2 million in revenues coming from Irish operations. Staff costs, including directors’ pay, Penneys/Primark’s newly redeveloped international rose from €5.89 million to €6.77 million. headquarters: one of the projects that Bennett The directors – Jim Bennett, Stephen Bennett, Paul Construction worked on Bruton, Carole Smilie,Michael Pigott and Paul McGee – shared €1.17 million, down on the €1.22 million a year earlier. Recent projects include Penneys’/Primark’s international headquarters in Dublin, and a bridge connecting Google’s Gordon House and Gasworks offices with the Google Docks building in the Docklands.
DUNE PAYS €350,000 TO OPEN ON PRIME GRAFTON ST SPOT
The fashion footwear and accessories group, Dune of London, is to open a new store on Dublin’s Grafton Street following other high profile lettings to retailers Hugo Boss and & Other Stories. Dune will be paying in the order of €350,000 for 69 Grafton Street. The high profile shop – towards the St Stephen’s Green end of Dublin’s main shopping street – has an overall floor area of 540sq m (5,813sq ft) and 240sq m (2,583sq ft) of retail space on the ground floor and at basement levels. The trading space was recently reconfigured and extended by owners IPUT before the building was put on the letting market through Simon Cooper of CBRE. Dune has 100 stores worldwide and 170 concessions in top stores such as Topshop, Topman, House of Fraser, John Lewis and Selfridges.
GRESHAM HOTEL EXPECTED TO SELL FOR OVER €80M
The long-delayed sale of Dublin’s Gresham Hotel is finally to proceed following Nama’s approval of an international marketing campaign to find a buyer for the city’s bestknown four-star hostelry, which is due to celebrate its 200th anniversary next year. Paul Collins of CBRE Hotels and Dave Murray of Christie & Co are to handle the sale of the O’Connell Street hotel which is expected to make in excess of €80 million – well short of the €117 million price paid for it in 2004 byPrecinct Investments, a company controlled by house builder Bryan Cullen. The renewed interest in the Irish hotel market comes after the industry recorded a 20 per cent increase in revenues last year – the highest of any European country – with the prospect of even better returns ahead due to an acute shortage in bedrooms in the city. The Gresham, a distinctive cut-stone building, has been synonymous with the social, commercial and tourist life of the city since it opened in 1817. It was the most popular and stylish hotel in the city for decades, helped by an art deco classical fit-out in the late 1920s. Its reputation suffered somewhat from the 1980s onwards largely because of the decline of O’Connell Street as a shopping thoroughfare and the replacement of many fashion stores by fast-food outlets. However, the fortunes of the street look like changing again with the planned redevelopment of a major site on the opposite side of O’Connell Street and the widely expected announcement about the future of Clerys department 32

TORQUING CARS! TYRE RETAILERS CRITICAL OF NEW RECYCLING LEVY
Ireland is groaning under the weight of hundreds of thousands of illegally disposed tyres, a stockpile that is growing each year. It’s causing a double-cost to the consumer, who already pays an upfront charge at the time of purchasing a tyre so that is can be properly disposed of. As a taxpayer, that same consumer is then funding the recovery and disposal efforts of local councils who have to deal with the massive piles of dumped tyres. It shouldn’t have been like this. Legislation was introduced in 2007 which was supposed to ensure voluntary compliance with waste disposal regulations, either by registering with a central database or with the local council. However, according to Seamus Clancy, chief executive of Repak ELT, the company now charged with solving the waste-tyre crisis, “the 2007 legislation should have been a full Producer Responsibility Initiative (PRI) scheme but it turned out to be a partial scheme and became very watered down. It just didn’t suit some of the cohorts in the industry and there was little enforcement”. That is about to change. The old legislation has been scrapped and theDepartment of Environment, Community and Local Government has brought in a new set of regulations, which will be overseen by Repak ELT, a separate entity to the well-known Repak organisation, which already deals with about 800,000 tonnes of waste and packaging every year. The new system will see tyre manufacturers pay €2.80 upfront for every tyre they introduce on to the market. This is to cover the costs of recovery and recycling as well as the administration of the scheme. That €2.80 will be passed to the wholesaler, the retailer and eventually the consumer and, under the new system, will have to be itemised as a separate cost on each invoice, much as with the WEEE regulations on recycling electrical goods. According to Clancy, “consumers are already paying on average between €1.50 and €3 per tyre for recycling charges, but those charges are not then being channelled into recovery and recycling. What mostly happens is that the retailer pays around 80c per unit to a collection agent who takes the tyres away and then thinks, “I’ve paid someone and I’ve done my bit”. The problem then is that consumers are effectively paying for recycling and collection twice – because their taxes go to cover the cost of dealing with the illegal dumps.” Clancy expects that the full PRI scheme will be up and running by this time next year, and that Repak ELT will use the next 12 months to complete its data gathering and begin educating both the public and the industry on the need for the scheme. With parts of the tyre supply chain still rebelling over the new legislation though, how long before Ireland’s vast tyre dumps are cleaned up? (Irish Times)
CAR FOR SALE: ONE CAREFUL OWNER, 1,130 MILES, £1.8 MILLION.
This super-rare used Bugatti Veyron may have an outrageous price, but wait till you see the running costs Dread that moment when your car mechanic tells you that you need to fit four new tyres to your car? Imagine the groan of discontent if he then told you a set of new rubber costs £24,000. Well that’s the reality if you’re fortunate enough to afford this outrageous second-hand motor — a one-of-eight Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that’s just gone on sale in the UK. And it’s no wonder the current owner wants it gone — some of the running costs are so steep you’re looking at more than half the UK average annual wage just to be insured to drive it. The car in question, on sale at H.R. Owen’s Jack Barclay luxury car dealership in Mayfair, London, is the world’s fastest roadster. The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse was built in limited numbers, but this World Record Edition model is just one of eight to ever be made. Built to celebrate its record-breaking speed attempt, the orange and black (it’s actually carbon fibre) paint scheme matches that of the very car that achieved a top speed of 254.04mph in April 2013, registering it as the fastest open top car ever. But don’t just think it’s the purchase price that’s out of this world; anyone with the funds to buy it will also have to cover the outrageous running costs to actually use it. For instance, those specially made PAX Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which are the widest tyres fitted to any passenger car in the world, need replacing every 6,000 miles at a cost of £6,000 each. And due to the wear caused by removing and refitting £24,000 worth of rubber, the wheels have to be replaced at the third time of asking. Oh, and they’re £28,000 for a set. Even if petrol prices are at their lowest for six years, keeping this Veyron brimmed isn’t cheap, and you’ll need to use the more expensive premium unleaded in this near-£2million hypercar. With a 100-litre tank and premium petrol currently costing 112p per litre, that’s £112 each time you fill it at a fuel station. It won’t hold onto it for too long though - Bugatti said, when the car is driven flat out at 250mph, it will guzzle it all in 12 minutes, which is the equivalent of 15.5p per second. We imagine it’s more economical if you’re driving within legal limits, though. Booking the car in for a service isn’t inexpensive either. In fact, H.R. Owen told AutoCar last year that an annual service can be as much as £100,000. That incredible fee covers 35 hours of work, which is how long it will take to carry out all the yearly maintenance checks, including five days just to change the alternator. It will also include oil changes, which won’t be cheap, especially as the Veyron uses 42 litres in total, with 18 litres in the engine and the rest in places like the axles and gearbox. Technicians also have to check the 14 single-use titanium chassis bolts that hold together the carbon chassis and rear sub-frame — if any of these need replacing, they cost £180 each or £2520 for a set. And you best hope that your Veyron doesn’t have an overheating issue - this model doesn’t have one radiator, it has 10. Finally, you’ll have to stump up the average cost of insurance for a Veyron driver to use it on the roads. That’ll be another £15,000 leaving your bank account each year.

TORQUING CARS! ASTON MARTIN TO CREATE UP TO 4,000 NEW JOBS AND ANNOUNCES SECOND UK FACTORY
Aston Martin is to create up to 4,000 new jobs in the UK after announcing a £200m investment programme that will see the firm build a second manufacturing plant in the country. The sports car maker revealed that St Athan, in Glamorgan, had been chosen as the site for its second manufacturing facility in the UK after viewing 20 potential global sites . The 90-acre Welsh plant, which will re-purpose some facilities currently in use by the Ministry of Defence, will handle production of Aston Martin’s new “crossover” vehicle - combining features found in a passenger car with those of a sports utility vehicle. The company will produce its range of next-generation sports cars, including the all-electric RapidE, at its existing manufacturing base in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Aston Martin expects to create up to 1,000 new jobs across the St Athan and Gaydon sites between now and 2020. A further 3,000 positions will likely be created across the supply chain and local businesses as a direct result of the investments. Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the new plant as evidence of Aston Martin’s “confidence in our economy”. Construction work at St Athan is due to commence next year, with production beginning in 2020. It is expected that more than 90pc of the production from St Athan will be exported outside of the UK.
REACTION TO NEW TOP GEAR TEAM
After months of speculation, the full Top Gear presenting team has been revealed. But what do people make of it? The new Top Gear presenting line-up was confirmed by Chris Evans yesterday when he tweeted an image, accompanied by the caption: “Morning from the new Top Gear team. All present and correct and smelling of eau de petrol.” Formula One presenter and former team boss Eddie Jordan, and racing driver Sabine Schmitz will join Evans in hosting the show, along with previously-confirmed American actor Matt LeBlanc. Plus, there are roles for motoring journalists Chris Harris and Rory Reid, and The Stig will return for his customary track driving duties. Unsurprisingly, there was a huge reaction on Twitter, with the sheer size of the team taking many by surprise. Some argued that the seven-strong line-up was a good thing, including Tom Ford, who served as script editor on the new show, but won’t be returning at the end of his contract. “Regarding #TopGear I actually think it makes lots of sense. There’s someone in there to appeal to everyone. Let’s give it a proper chance.”

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR LET THE KIDS PLAY: There was a recent article in the Irish Times by Sonia O’Sullivan that I believe is worth sharing. It deals with her attending a local race meeting where her daughter was taking part and how parents should behave when watching their kids taking part. Here are some extracts from the piece. Sonia starts by talking about watching young athletes who run without worrying to much about tactics. “There aren’t a lot of tactics employed, as they almost all rely on natural competitive instinct. Young athletes are always fighting for the lead, whether it’s a 400m or a 1,500m race, simply because they believe to be in with a chance of winning you need to be as close to the lead as possible at all times. Last Friday night I found myself inside the Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne. It was a full weekend of athletics, the Victorian Junior Championships. As a parent, I was required to volunteer some time to help out with the running of the programme. I figured if I took the first two hours on Friday evening I would be free to relax and enjoy the races for the rest of the weekend. SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS I was given the job of tape puller in the shot put circle. That was until the 1,500m races started, when I had to multitask, keeping my eye on the races while continuing the shot put measuring. Now I may be slightly biased, but to me the middle-distance races are the most exciting, entertaining and competitive events on the programme. I am involved a little with coaching in Australia, although not my daughter Sophie, who was running in the under-16 1,500m. No wonder I was distracted. I see a lot of myself in the way Sophie races. Not the times she runs, but just her instincts, her ability to race. She is always jostling for a lead position, similar to when I used to compete in junior races around Cork and Munster. The best thing about these races is the aftermath: all the girls are the best of friends, rolling around on the grass laughing, not a care in the world – when only minutes before they were battling on the track. Sophie finished second, in her best time, and she was happy. I sensed, without any discussion, that she was already looking ahead to the next race. At this level, it’s not the time that matters: the competition is so fierce that the times just come with the pure racing. Watching these races, I always have an eye on the clock because I understand if you go too fast at the start there is a good chance you will slow down and the winner is rarely predictable. It’s also easy to pick out the athletes who are training and more physically prepared. However, it is those who have trained less, but possess a more competitive instinct, who are more fascinating to watch. Sometimes these athletes do things that shouldn’t be possible, based on their preparation, but being involved in the competition allows them to regularly finish in the top three, or run faster times. This is partly due to natural talent and an ability to rise to the occasion, a fearless and instinctive ability to react to any challenge. The longer you can contain this natural competitiveness in children, without pressure or expectation, the more likely that they will continue to be competitive throughout their adult life. The enjoyment of sport and the ability to be competitive must balance out. As soon as the competitiveness becomes more important than the enjoyment, then the level
38

of competitiveness will drop. A bit like hitting a golf ball; the harder you try, the worse your shot. You need to be at one with what you are doing, and to produce a balanced effort, in order to achieve more. There is a competitive instinct in all of us. Some people may not even know it, as they think to be competitive means you must be involved in a sporting activity. But this competitive instinct is the driving force that allows each person to fulfill their potential. It comes out in the variety of activities, from schoolwork to office work, to simply cooking the dinner each day. It’s not always obvious, but if you find yourself being very particular about how you do something, take the time to perfect it, then you’re clearly competitive in some sense, and it’s only the beginning of the natural competitive instinct that drives us every day of the week. You also need to be able to relax and enjoy what you do, to be able to get the best results. If we can instill this ability in our children, they are more likely to have a competitive and enjoyable life in sport. STAY ON THE SIDELINES: The difference now to when I was young is the greater involvement of parents in their child’s sporting lives. I believe parents should be there for transport and support and other peripheral matters, but outside of that should stay on the sidelines and simply enjoy the competition. Let the children be the driving force. Let them find a way to be competitive and get the best from themselves. The place for this to begin is on the school field, and then let it reinvent itself in some other area of life later on”. Editor’s Note: There is not a lot to add to this excellent piece by Sonia. When an athlete of her success and standing recognizes that it’s vital to let the young sportspersons compete without putting them under the added pressure of getting results we should all take note. We have all seen, or maybe been, that parent shouting instructions from the sideline. Now we all think this will ensure our siblings will win but all it is really doing is giving them mixed messages and confusing them. Credit must go to the sporting bodies who have taken this on board. For example the FAI are now introducing Parent Education Workshops as part of the Player Development Workshops. Soccer, and I know the GAA as well, don’t start competitive action until 12. The early years are so important for our children, education us adults as to what’s best practice is our duty. TALES FROM THE OCHE: Tralee’s top darts players are in action each week in the Tuborg Tralee and District League. They are throwing for Cups that have been named in honour of 3 great darts people. Section 1 is for the Joe Flynn Cup. The recently deceased legendary Joe Flynn was one of the founding members of the League and also its Honorary Life President. Section 2 is for the Christy Kelly Cup. Christy was a well-known thrower around Tralee and beyond and played League Darts with The Huddle and Turners Bar. Section 3 is the Eileen Joyce Cup and the League is delighted to honor this great darts woman who travelled around North Kerry and beyond with her husband Sean. On the boards and in Group 1 Parker’s continued their winning run with a 5-2 win over New Kingdom Bar Listowel in a superb
Friday 26th February 2016
game. McElligott’s Bar Ardfert were victorious following a 6-1 win against O’Connors Bar Ballyduff. In Group B the Slieve Mish had another great 5-2 win against The Complex Abbeydorney. The other game in Group B saw Broderick’s Bar Listowel overcome Huddle B with a 5-2 win also. In Group C Keanes Bar Causeway were 5-2 winners over Boland’s Bar Castegregory. The Huddle C took on The Railway Bar B Lixnaw in another close game with the Huddle C just claiming a 4-3 win. The last game in Group C was also close with Parkers B Kilflynn defeating the Dew Drop Lixnaw 4-3. Fixtures for next week are as follows: Group A: Parkers A v O’Connors Bar Group B: Huddle B v Complex Abbeydorney and Slieve Mish v Railway Bar A Group C: Railway Bar B v Dew Drop, Keanes Bar take on Huddle C and Parkers B up against Boland’s Bar. ULTIMATE AIM FOR ULTAN: There was great news for all involved in Tralee Rugby with another call up of Ultan Dillane to the Irish squad for the game against England in Twickenham this weekend. Dillane was on the squad for the France but was released back to Connacht prior to the game. With Ireland having a number of walking wounded chances are Dillane could make an appearance at some stage. RACE FOR LACEY CUP: The 2016 Lacey Cup is the ultimate aim of the 200 plus cyclists who will take part in the annual season opener of the Munster racing season this Sunday, February 28th, from 12.10pm. Hosted by Tralee Manor West iBike the action gets underway from Poffs garage on the Dingle Road at 12.30. Over 200 riders are expected to take the starting flag with the A1, A2 and A3’s off together followed by the A4 riders approx 5 minutes later. This will give them the option of relative competition all the way to the end. Last year’s winner Sean McKenna will again be amongst the favourites along with all the top local riders like Sean Lacey, Cathal Moynihan and Paul Griffin. Riders will tackle the usual 75km course taking them through Blennerville, Camp, Gleann na nGealt (where the first A3 rider over will take the Jackie O’Connor Memorial Trophy), Annascaul, Inch, Castlemaine and over Slaibh Mish with the first rider over getting the Teddy Griffin Memorial Trophy and onto the final just outside the town on the Killorglin road. Sign On is at the Manopr Hotel from 11am. TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB: Winter Swimming: It has been a busy winter series with no less than 8 swimmers currently in the running for the Winter Swimmer of the Year. The weather has been very poor but temperatures have improved and 30 swimmers took to the water again last Sunday. The Winter Swimming Series will finish with the Easter Raffle on March 20th. The 2016 season will kick off on St Patrick’s Day with the first race set for May 24th. Membership including the numbered hat is e55 for a competitive swimmer or e75 for a family of 2. 8 timed races are needed for entry into the Swimmer of the Year. Non competitor membership remains at e20. The Cross the Bay Challenge for club members from Derrymore to Fenit is an addition to the list this year and there will also be a new group

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES in the races to cater for novice swimmers. Other highlights will be the Blennerville to Fenit Swim and the Darkness into Light Swim that will take place at 4.15am on May 7th. UNDER THE BOARDS: GARVEY’S SET FOR PLAY-OFFS: While it may have been a stop start season Team Garvey’s are now focused on the Women’s Division 1 Basketball playoffs. The odds are favouring a Garvey versus Team Den Joes American Style quarter final which will certainly get the Kerry basketball public excited. The Castleisland girls have ended their regular season and have enjoyed a 6 game winning streak to end the campaign in 3rd place. Garvey’s have one game left away to Fr Mathews in Cork this weekend. Last weekend the Tralee girls saw off the challenge of Ulster Rockets 61-48 in an impressive performance driven from the front by Rheanne O’Shea who shot 19 points and Sinead Mackessy who ended with 18 points. If it works out as hoped Team Garvey’s will face Team Den Joes with the winners getting the prize of a semi-final game against the runners up Fr Mathews. ST BRENDAN’S BC NEWS: In Boys u14 Division 3 Pool A the Tralee side travelled to Killarney and won on double scores 28-14 against TK Cougars St Brendan’s led 6-5 after the first quarter, were 16-11 ahead at the half and went on to win easily. This was a turn round for the first meeting of the teams last October when TK held St Brendan’s to 12 points. Garry Lynch ended with 8 points followed by Nelly Olanrewaju on 5 and Ryan McHugh and Liam The team also defeated TK Vixens 42-31 in a Division 3 Pool A game. They took over in rthe second quarter and were 25-13 up at the break. TK Vixens came back into the game in the second half but credit to the Tralee boys they held on for a good win. Graham Sheehy top scored on 11 points followed by Daniel Bowler on 8 and Garry Lynch on 6. U10 Girls: Accompanied by their coach Deirdre Hartnett the clubs young girls travelled to Kenmare for a Blitz against teams from the host club and also from Gneeveguilla. All the girls really enjoyed their experience. Other Results: Boys U14 Division 1: TK Cougars 31-62 St Brendan’s, Men’s Division 1 Cup St Brendan’s 51-65 St Mary’s, Boys u16 Division 1 KCYMS 74-50 St Brendan’s and u12 Boys Division 3 it ended Ballybunion Wildcats 20 – St Brendan’s B 35. COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: The Community Games season is in full swing with lots of finals taking place every weekend. The Music county finals were held in Keel and Blennerville / Ballyard took 3rd place in the u12 Group Music. Spa / Fenit / Barrow organized the County Singing Finals in Abbeydorne at the weekend. The standard was very high and Sinead Carr took the title in the u12 competition and Blennerville/Ballyard were 3rd in the Group singing u12’s. The U10 Boys Indoor Soccer finals take place next week. Sadly there are no Tralee teams involved as Ballybunion, Brosna, An Gaeltacht and Beaufort will battle it out for the county title. KDL MEETING: A County Board meeting will take place in Mounthawk Park on Monday February 29th at 7.00pm and will be followed by a Delegate meeting of all clubs at 8.00pm. Cup draws will be the main topic on the agenda and all entry fees must be paid before the draws. PARNELL’S NEWS: The club held a very exciting event to form
its quiz team that will compete in Scor na bPaisti. Before the brain power was required the Grupa Cheoil put on a very well received impromptu performance as they get ready for their Scor competition. Katie Dwyer, who also plays accordion with the music group, was the winner on the night and along with Alesha Daughton, Anna Kerdzia, Edward Sheehy, Darragh Moloney and Donnacha Buttimer will represent Parnells at the County Finals on April 17th. The club was very proud of the display by John Tweek Griffin, former coach and longtime champion of hurling development, and his teammates on their performance for the Kerry hurlers against Limerick. U14 player Cian Cronin is double jobbing at the moment mixing hurling and dancing as he prepares for the World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow in March and we all wish him well. Club chairman Dermot Reen welcomed Clare native Ollie Broughton to the coaching ranks. Ollie gave a concentrated skills session and emphasised the important of ball work and practice to develop their first touch. Well done to Richard McCluskey and Boyle’s Hardware who have teamed up to put in storage bins in the equipment storage facility. The club is looking for members to march in the St Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17th so if you can please contact any officer. On the day bring on your hurley and sliotar. ST PAT’S STORIES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 13,25,26 and 27 and the next jackpot will be e4.900. Underage: The numbers continue to turn out for the juvenile academies with the u6s to u10 training as usual this weekend as do the u12’s, u14 and u16 with girls training returning in the near future. Seniors: The senior team eventually got some action as they took on John Mitchels and Churchill in the St Brendan’s League. Mitchels have just been promoted and have more work done than the St Pats players and won on a 3-10 to 1-12 score-line. There was a much better result when they beat Churchill in a game played in tough conditions. 24 players got game time and this weekend the St Brendan’s League Round 5 against Na Gaeil is pencilled in. Community Games: The club was well represented in the Community games at the weekend so well done to all involved. Family Quiz: This will take place in Quane’s Bar at 7.15pm on Friday March 4th and all are welcome. STACKS STORIES: There are some changes to the times and venues for the underage trainings so please contact your coach for full details. The u12’s, u14’s and u16’s continue training as they continue preparations for their County Leagues. Like to be a Ref: The GAA Referee’s Committee is inviting clubs to send interested members to an upcoming foundation-level course. The course would be run over 3 nights and all parent, mentors or older players are welcome to attend. Scor na bPaisti for the Greater Tralee area takes place on Friday March 11th at 7pm in the ITT North Campus.
