Let’s Get Kerry Walking National Operation Transformation Walk Day Transformation Walk “Is Once again Kerry’s Operation There’s only days to go to this year’s Operations Transformation Walk and it’s shaping up nicely. The walk, organised by Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership will follow the old tow path of the Tralee Ship Canal, a stunning walk just outside Tralee town, seeped in nature and scenery what more could you want to get your new year off to a great start. Starting from Tralee Bay Wetlands the walk takes place on Saturday 12th January at 11am to coincide with the official RTÉ start time. Suitable for young and old, fit and unfit, crawlers, walkers, buggies and strollers. Although the walk itself is almost 8 km, because the walk follows an out and back approach so keeping the little ones in mind, it is possible to turn around whenever you have reached your limit. LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Edel is thinking of moving to a new location in 2019 and having a fresh start in a house out the country and would like to keep a pet a dog or a cat. She has always rented and is wondering what should she look out for in making the move to a new rental property. Provided Edel has kept the present property in the manner in which she received it reasonable wear and tear excepted she is entitled to her deposit back. However if a landlord makes this difficult she may have to take the dispute up with the residential tenancies board which may take some time and she may have to save to have her deposit in advance for the new place she is renting. Edel will need to agree with the landlord that she can keep pets as may landlords specifically state no pets allowed. Prior to deciding on the new place to rent it is important to check the BER ( energy rating ) as if it is low heating bills will be high. Edel should take photographs of the new property before she moves in, in case there is any dispute down the road on the state of the property. Once in the new accommodation she is entitled to quiet peaceful and exclusive enjoyment of the home without disturbance from noisy neighbours or a nosy landlord. The accommodation should have certain minimum standards and she is entitled to a rent book. Edel needs to ensure the rent is paid on time and abide by terms and conditions. Examples of what the minimum standards entail state that the property should be in a proper state of structural repair. Electricity or gas provision should be safe and in good repair, and that every room has adequate ventilation and both natural and artificial lighting. There should also be a washing machine and a clothes-dryer, if the dwelling does not have a private garden or yard. There should also be facilities for cooking and for the hygienic storage of food e.g. cooker, fridge, microwave. A sink with hot and cold water, separate bathroom and controllable heating. A fire blanket and smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and safety restrictors on high up windows. Contact details should be available for the landlord. A landlord can only enter the home with permission by prior arrangement unless an emergency. If a landlord has been notified of repairs needed to the property and does not do them you can do them yourself and seek reimbursement. One can have visitors to the house but if a new person is moved in you must tell the landlord. Notice periods for termination of the tenancy are set out by law. Further information on tenants’ rights and responsibilities are available at www.rtb.ie and www.citizensinformation.ie Lawquip: What did the apartment say to the landlord? “Please re-lease me let me go”

Radio Kerry to acquire Clare FM and Tipp FM The Board of Radio Kerry has approved an offer to the shareholders of Clare Community Radio Holdings Ltd. to purchase the entire share capital of the company, Clare FM. It has also made an offer for Clare FM’s controlling interest in Tipp FM. The Board of Clare FM are recommending acceptance of the offer to their shareholders. Both offers are subject to shareholder and regulatory approval in early 2019. Radio Kerry, Clare FM and

Tipp FM have forged a close working relationship in the Independent Radio sector over the years and work together on industry bodies such as IBI, IRS and Learning Waves. The stations also share the same local ethos and have similar programme schedules. Liam O’Shea MD of Clare FM & Tipp FM said “The counties share the same pride of place, love of sports, music and culture. The reality of the modern media environment is that in order to secure their

business future I strongly believe that radio stations must consider shared costs and consolidation with other similar companies “. Radio Kerry CEO Paul Byrne said “The decision is being made to be proactively involved in the future development of the radio and media industry in Ireland and to create new opportunities for staff, advertisers and listeners”.

Radio Kerry Chairman, Tim O Keeffe said “The shareholders and management team at Radio Kerry have common objectives as Clare FM and Tipp FM in protecting and promoting the local radio sector. It is the belief of all involved that this would strengthen and secure the future of all stations involved “. Radio Kerry previously purchased Shannonside/ Northern Sound Radio in 2005.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! HAPPY 2019! I’m back in Sydney after an amazing Christmas at home. I had so much fun, and I even got to paint some beautiful faces too! Seeing as this is my first post of 2019, I had to do something goals related, so this week I’m talking all about my 2019 beauty goals as well as some general goals that we all should aim for. 1. DAILY SKIN ROUTINE - A good goal to start your year off is to try and get a good skincare routine in place. Depending on how on top of your skincare game you are, this could range from taking off your makeup before bed to using an eye cream every day.

for optimal application. As always, I 100% recommend the Blank Canvas Cosmetics brush cleaner, available in CH Tralee or on their website. I have a tutorial on how I clean my brushes on my YouTube Channel ‘Rebecca Shortt’ if you wanna check that out.

2. HAIR MASK - You’ve only one head of hair, and if that looks good you’re off to a great start! In the last few years, I have learned that healthy hair wins EVERY TIME. No matter what colour you have, how you style it, how long it is, if your hair isn’t healthy and your ends are dead, it’s not going to look good. 2019 is the year I’m going to try and do a hair mask at least every two weeks (mainly because it’s the year I plan on going platinum blonde)! 3. CLEAN BRUSHES - Now, if you’ve been to my Beautiful Favourites or Beyond The Glam events you already know that not cleaning your makeup brushes is just unacceptable. You have no idea how much bacteria makeup brushes harbour, especially foundation brushes! Depending on how often you wear makeup, you should definitely aim to be cleaning your brushes once every 2 weeks or once a month. But a foundation brush should really be washed more frequently

4. MAKEUP CLEAR OUT - A big goal for myself and all you makeup junkies/hoarders out there! I love buying makeup, but I, along with many of you I feel, can hold onto makeup products that are way too old, (over 2 or 3 years is a no from me) or that just didn’t suit/work for

Instagram: @rebecca.shortt Twitter:@bexblah YouTube: ‘Rebecca Shortt’

14

TRALEE ADVERTISER

me. If you’ve never done a clear out, I want you to go to your makeup bag/ collection and make three piles. First the ‘definitely way too old’ pile, then the ‘I just don’t use/like this’ pile and finally the ‘products I use and love’ pile. Now if an item is way too old but you use and love it, like mascara, for example, they should be replaced every 6 months so if it’s older than that, get rid of it! Your eyes will thank you. For the ‘I just don’t use/like this’ pile, you can give these items to friends or family or donate them to a women’s shelter. You’re never going to use that makeup anyway so might as well put it to good use. 5. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY - Sometimes it’s very easy to get caught up in the hype of constant new makeup releases and buy way more than you need. For 2019, try buying good quality products that you know you will use rather than getting sucked into the hype and buying another warm brown eyeshadow palette when you have enough at home! There you have it, those are some 2019 Beauty Goals that we can all put into practice. If you have any goals you’d like to share with me you can find me on...

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO STRONG FRIENDS! HAPPY NEW YEAR I hope you are all having a great start to 2019 and not stressing too much about everyone and their dog talking about what diet/exercise/fad they’re following. The new year can be a time of many people setting health/fitness goals. Which is positive, but don’t let yourself get caught up in it all. In 2019, I think everyone’s goal should be to EDUCATE themselves on nutrition, calorie deficits and general health. No fad diets, no cutting carbs, no doing spin classes that you detest just to lose weight. NO. None of these things works long term let me tell you. Now I’m no expert, but I have chosen to educate myself properly. One of the ways I did this was by following people online who actually know what they’re talking about and are not selling quick fixes. James Smith ‘@jamessmithpt’ on Instagram and Rebecca Nolan ‘@tea. to.triceps’ on Instagram. James is a qualified personal trainer and owner of the JSA (James Smith Academy) in which he educates people all about nutrition and getting in better shape. Rebecca is a qualified no bs nutritionist. I absolutely love all of her posts and

find them so informative! She posts sciencebased evidence and really knows her stuff. Following people like this is good for your relationship with food and your outlook on your health. They don’t promote fads or quick fixes, they’re not selling you stuff you don’t need. You shouldn’t be spending your life going from one diet to another. Once you educate yourself, there will be no need. That’s what brings me to my next point. The second half of 2019, basically since I moved to Australia. I totally lost focus on the whole ‘fitness’ side of my life. I really want to get back on track with everything and focus on doing what I like and educating myself more. I have joined the JSA (James Smith Academy) it

is VERY reasonably priced and gives you everything you need based on your lifestyle. So from next week on I’ll be mentioning how I’m getting on with everything. So yeah, what I’m telling you this week is to educate yourself, don’t set unrealistic goals, and just be mindful of who’s content you’re consuming online.

You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019

Well as we get back to normal after the Christmas and New year holidays we can look at some very tasty dishes that are a bit lighter. So here is an easy one to start

BACON, CHEDDER AND ONION QUICHE INGREDIENTS PASTRY

FILLING

• • •

• • • • • • • • •

• •

2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6oz butter, cut into small pieces 1/2 cup ice water

1/4 pound thickly sliced bacon 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 large onion, sliced 1/4 inch thick salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 large eggs 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup crème fraîche 14oz ounces aged white cheddar cheese, shredded 2 tablespoons chopped dill

METHOD In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and pepper. Using a pastry cutter or 2 knives, cut in the butter until it resembles small peas. Sprinkle the water on top and mix until the dough begins to come together. Turn the pastry out onto a work surface and gently knead 2 or 3 times, just until it comes together. Pat the pastry into a disk, wrap in plastic and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, 1 hour. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the pastry to a 12-inch round, about 1/8 inch thick. Ease the pastry into an 11-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom. Trim the overhang so it is flush with the rim of the tart pan. Refrigerate the tart shell for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180c, Line the tart shell with aluminum foil and fill to the top with pie weights or dried beans. Bake for about 50 minutes, until the pastry is golden. Remove the foil and weights and bake the shell for about 25 minutes longer, until richly browned and crisp. Transfer to a rack to cool, for about 10 minutes. Turn the oven down to 140c. In a large pan, cook the sliced bacon over moderate heat, turning, until browned and crisp, about 6 minutes. Transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain, then coarsely chop. Wipe out the pan and add the vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, add the sliced onion and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion is lightly caramelized and very soft, about 8 minutes. Let the onion cool. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs. Whisk in the milk, crème fraîche, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Spread the caramelized onion in the tart shell followed by the bacon and cheese. Pour the custard on top. Step 6 Meanwhile, Prepare the Filling Bake the quiche for 35 minutes, until the custard is just set. Transfer the quiche to a rack and let cool for 15 minutes. Sprinkle the dill on the top. Unmold the quiche and serve in wedges.

Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

TORQUING CARS! TOYOTA JOINS HYBRID INVASION WITH ITS NEW COROLLA

Toyota calls it the hybrid invasion as it unveils the latest models to turn to the joint propulsion hybrid strategy as diesel models get the chop. The company has long been an advocate of hybrid technology and now we have one of Ireland’s favourite cars, the Corolla, joining the growing list of hybrid models coming to our shores this year. Michael Gaynor, marketing director for Toyota here, is forecasting a very rapid decline for diesel models (Toyota is, of course, no longer selling new diesel cars) and says that the recent 1pc VRT increase on diesels is likely to be only the beginning of further penalties in the future. “Future city bans on diesel cars are inevitable and don’t be surprised if we see Dublin follow other EU cities in the near future,” he forecast at the launch of five new hybrid models - the Corolla saloon, Corolla hatchback, Corolla Sports Touring, the Camry and the RAV4. Toyota says that the fourth generation of hybrids in these models will beat any equivalent diesel on a long journey and claims that hybrid will be the preferred route for buyers over the next five years before EVs become a credible mass market option. The Irish company believes that hybrids and plug-in hybrids will continue to sell even after the Government’s declared deadline that only EVs can be sold here after 2030. The company plans to launch 10 new EVs by the 2020s when it believes that the charging points infrastructure and battery technology for longer range mobility will have improved.Other thoughts from the Toyota camp are that there seems to be renewed interest in saloon models generally, which had taken a hit because of the surge in SUV sales and that, contrary to perception, rural Ireland is driving the swing to hybrid sales, citing Co Offaly as having recorded 142pc, the biggest percentage increase during 2018. For 2019, Toyota aims to become the number one car seller here and the company is confident of achieving this, although the production of sufficient hybrid models is under pressure all over the EU. Currently, there are 1,000 orders for the new arrivals and 8,000 test drives are pending as the date for the new models to arrive in the showrooms draws nearer. The first of the new hybrid models to arrive is the RAV4 tomorrow, the Corolla hatchback on January 16, the Corolla saloon and Corolla Sports Touring in mid-February and the eagerly awaited Camry, making its return to the Irish market after an absence of 14 years, on April 4. The new Corolla will be the big seller and looks smart and is bigger than the outgoing model with more legroom, a wheelbase as big as the outgoing Avensis, and a higher level of specification and safety features. Prices start at €27,600 for the 1.8-litre hybrid which will be over €1,000 more than the outgoing 1.4 diesel model.

SHORTCUTS WITH EDDIE

Sat nav danger; 508 arrives; powerful new MINI electric this year; SAT navs might get you there but they could also put you at risk on your journey, it is claimed this week. Placing large devices - such as sat navs - on critical areas of your windscreen can dramatically reduce visibility and pose a ‘significant threat to road safety’, according to breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist. They make a good point, I think. They say devices positioned in the middle of a windscreen “mean a potentially lethal reduction in driver visibility, especially on left hand bends and at junctions”. Now they mention it, I realise how good a case they are making. We need all the visibility we can get on today’s roads. So be careful where you put the device. * Peugeot tell me their stunning new 508 is here ahead of anticipated arrival date. Now that’s good news for a car that has drawn so much praise for its design. * Reports suggest that MINI’s new electric car will also be a motoring-first electric hot hatch. Instead of being completely focused on economy, engineers are setting a lot of store on developing the EV with performance in mind. Which helps explain why the car will be badged ‘Cooper S E’ to proclaim its performance when it is unveiled later this year. As previously reported the car will be based on the MINI 3dr hatchback. TORQUING CARS! NEW 450KW EV CHARGER FROM BMW AND PORSCHE IS AS FAST AS FILLING UP WITH PETROL BMW and Porsche’s prototype 450kW FastCharge unit can give 62 miles of range in just three minutes, once vehicle technology catches up A new electric vehicle charger capable of delivering 100km (62 miles) worth of charge in just three minutes, and fully charging an EV’s batteries in just 15 minutes, has been developed by a number of German companies, including BMW and Porsche.

The companies’ 450kW (kilowatt) FastCharge system – while still a prototype – trebles the charge rates of the world’s rapid chargers’ at present, and promises “to make charging electric vehicles as fast and convenient as fuelling with petrol”. When operating at its maximum 450kW capacity, it has proven capable of replenishing a BMW i3 (fitted with a “specially developed high-voltage battery”) from 10 to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes, and delivering 62 miles of range to a Porsche research vehicle in just three minutes. While not technically a ‘full’ charge, this is representative of a full charge in real-world conditions, as manufacturers advise against recharging to 100 per cent, and most owners are unlikely to allow their batteries to drop below 10 per cent. To give an idea of the scale of the leap the 450kW FastCharge prototype delivers, home wallboxes deliver electricity at 3.6 to 22kW, the majority of rapid public chargers deliver at 50kW, while Tesla’s Superchargers deliver 120kW. Using a 50kW charger, Nissan says its Leaf will take around an hour minutes for its batteries to go from 20 to 80 per cent, while a Tesla Supercharger can provide a similar charge in around 40 minutes. BMW has developed the technology in conjunction with Porsche, Siemens, Allego and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility, receiving £7million from the German transport ministry to help fund the project. BMW says the project has seen it “test the limits of the fast-charging capacity demonstrated by vehicle batteries” thanks, in part, to the energy supply system delivered by Seimens.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE POLITE PARROT

An old religious woman goes to a pet store to buy a parrot. Everything is fine until she brings it home. It begins to swear uncontrollably. F this, F that, F you and finally the lady can stand it no more. She grabs the bird, shoves it in the freezer, and slams the door shut. Squawking, shrieking, pounding, and cursing come out of the freezer for a few moments and then it goes quiet. The woman is scared that she has hurt the bird and opens the freezer. The parrot walks calmly out and steps gently onto the woman’s outstretched hand. He looks into the lady’s eyes and says “Ma’am, I am truly sorry if my language offended you and it will not recur. If I may ask, what did the chicken do?”

A MAN ENTERS A LINGERIE STORE TO PURCHASE A NEGLIGEE FOR HIS WIFES BIRTHDAY.

The salesgirl shows him several possibilities that range from €250 to €500 in price -- the more sheer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the sheerest item, pays the $500, and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on, and model it for him. Upstairs the wife thinks, “I have an idea. It’s so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won’t put it on, I’ll do the modeling with nothing on , return it tomorrow, and keep the €500 refund for myself.” She appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, “Good Lord! You’d think for €500, they’d at least iron it!”

A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR WITH HIS DOG

The bartender says: “sorry sir, but we don’t allow dogs here” The man replies: “wait, my dog is special. You see, he can talk” The bartender is doubtful, so the man turns to his dog and says: “alright buddy, what goes on top of a house?” The dog replies: “Roof!” The man asks again, “what covers the outside of a tree?” To which the dog replies: “Bark!” Finally, the man asks his dog who the best baseball player of all time is. “Ruth!”, Says the dog. “Get out of here, those are just normal dog noises! Your dog doesn’t actually talk,” says the bartender. The man leaves with his dog and heads home. On the way back, the dog turns to the man and asks: “should I have said DiMaggio?

THREE FRIENDS TALKING ABOUT THEIR DOGS.

So there were three friends talking about the intelligence of their dogs, to which one says: My shepherd dog not only took care of my sheep when I left but also sheared them once a year. The next says: Ha! Mine was so smart that all he left to do was to bark. The third sobbing says: Dog? My dog was the very best... Did he died? Said the other two. He died electrocuted. A ray? No, he was fixing the damn TV.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR A NEW YEAR – NEW HOPES AND DREAMS: As we are just over a week into the New Year I hope your resolutions are still intact (or mostly you are still on track!!) On the sporting front we are all hoping that we will be celebrating a good year for our favourites. It is a new start for some while others re half way through their seasons. But either way the Christmas period is a time for reflection and a look at what’s to come over the next twelve month. So from my point of view here some of the things we are we looking forward to over the next number of months – and if I don’t mention your individual team then please send me your sporting wishes for 2019. Next week we will be back to our normal column and once again we invite any club or sport that we might be inadvertently missing to send in your notes by Monday and we will be delighted to cover it. SPORTS TOURISM MUST BE RECOGNISED: While this is a drum I have beaten before I hope that 2019 is the year when Sports Tourism is recognised. Tralee and Kerry in general does not have a proper plan in place to fully capitalise on the benefits from Sports Tourism. I am calling for a forum to be held with all the Government agencies involved in sport, the County Council, the Kerry Sports Partnership and the governing bodies of all the sporting organisations that operate on a national level and of course the Tralee Chamber. For example how many of the fans that come to Tralee to support Kerry GAA teams, Garvey’s Warriors, the League of Ireland soccer sides are targeted with a brochure of what Tralee has to offer. All of these are sports tourists on those days and are a huge potential market to come back with friends and families later in the year. There has been coverage in the media of the losses at the Wetlands but has anyone approached any of the clubs to see how they could encourage the travelling supporters or indeed visiting teams to come and stay overnight and visit some attractions.

32

TRALEE ADVERTISER

These are just initial thoughts but has anyone looked at how many of those from outside of the county that run the Tralee Marathon come back again. Why not give all of those a voucher that can be tracked for some of the towns attractions and monitor it. Why not do the same thing on the back of tickets bought for Austin Stack Park and see how many use them? While the main target would be to get people to come and stay overnight even getting families from Kerry to come back to town is a win-win. Competitions like the Rose and Lee Strand GAA Cups and hopefully a new soccer one that is being used for targeted marketing campaigns. But it needs to be properly targeted and this is where the Forum would be the ideal first step. FRESH FACES FOR KERRY: With a new team on the side-line and on the field these are exciting times for the Kerry GAA senior team. New manager Peter Keane has been speaking to the media this week as Kerry supporters are already asking for the names of who will be on his new squad – so much for a honeymoon period. They don’t have long to wait as they face Tyrone in Killarney on January 27th in the opening round of the League. Of course there will be a number of changes following the high profile retirements. He said that “while the League is not his utmost priority as there is ultimately a bigger picture there is a great squad to work with.” Of course there will be a clamour to bring in some of the successful minor teams of recent years but the new squad and management need time to bed in. Hopefully they will get their League campaign off to a good start but everyone will have one eye on the Championship and the big question is can anyone stop Dublin’s 5-a-row bid and can that someone be Kerry. August might seem a long way away but the journey there begins this month.

There is also the changes to the Munster championship which will probably make it harder for Kerry (and Cork) to come through to an All-Ireland quarter final. The counties outside of the big two play a round robin and a final with the winner playing Kerry and Cork in another round robin tournament. This will mean that the county that comes through will have a number of games under their belt before they take on Kerry. This also gets rid of the one big knockout game where for the last few years Cork have played one game and are then finished. But Kerry will again have a talented squad coming through from the Development squads and will be hoping to continue their historic run. The season proper begins for the Kerry Hurlers: Inter County hurling in December and January does not seem like the best idea but with the game on a high at the moment there certainly is an appetite for it both on and off the field. Kerry have been playing in the Munster League and as expected went down to the big guns. However this is great preparation for their League campaign as they will not face teams of that standard in that campaign. However they have a tough Division 2A League opener as they travel to Antrim on January 26th before the welcome Westmeath to Tralee a week later. One interesting game is the double header where they play in the Fitzgerald Stadium with the hurlers taking on Meath and the footballers playing Monaghan. Club Front: Once again Kerry has a number of clubs chasing All Ireland glory and hopefully over the next few months a number of these will be successful. On the local front the big battles will be for the County Championships in football and hurling where a number of teams will be in contention. And of course there will be plenty of local interest in the latter stages of the Colleges Football competitions.

6 IN A ROW? There is also a new minor management set up and mostly a new squad for this year’s championship. And they need to look at it like that and not dwell on the fact that Kerry are going for a 6th title in a row.

EXCITING TIMES ON THE SOCCER FIELDS: These are hugely exciting times for Kerry soccer especially on the League of Ireland front. Kerry will have four teams in the underage League of Ireland u13’s, u15’s, u17’s and u19’s.

Friday 11th January 2019

This now means there is a full pathway for players to play against the best in the country all the way up to u19 and hopefully many of these will go on to play in the Division 1 or Premier Division in the League of Ireland and who knows in the next year or two we could see Kerry moving into that part of the game. On the club front both the KDL and the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League are going from strength to strength. The battles for the Leagues are well underway. At SFAI level The Park has reached the Last 32 of the National Cups while at Inter League level the Kerry 13’s and 15’s are into the latter stages of the Munster competitions. The 12’s and 16’s are in the early stages of theirs. And of course the Kennedy Cup and Gaynor Cups will take place in June. Things from an administrative point of view will change later in the year when the Schoolboys Girls League will be preparations for moving to the calendar year which will begin in February 2020. There are also discussions with the Junior Leagues to move to the calendar year which would mean that all strands of the game are working in the same time frame which is vital for the game. 2018 was a great year for the Kerry District League with the opening of the second All Weather pitch at Mounthawk Park and the hosting of the Victory Shield which was a huge success for both the soccer and business communities in Tralee. BASKETBALL BUOYANT: What a time it is for basketball in Kerry and particularly in Tralee. The good times are continuing for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors who had a great Christmas period. Two wins in the League including getting revenge over Keanes Killorglin and success in the Castleisland Blitz. And if they can get the better of Killester on Saturday night in Cork then they will qualify for their first National Cup Final under this incarnation. And the SuperLeague wins has them right in contention so the next few months will be exciting times for the Warriors fans. Pat Price has a squad that’s certainly is capable of winning National titles. Outside of Tralee if Keanes play like they did in the derby they should easily secure their place in the SuperLeague which would make for a successful first season. And with Scotts Lakers pushing hard for a League final place we could have three teams in the top flight next season. On the Schools front the big one took place earlier this week when Mounthawk and The Green battled it out for a place in the u19 Boys All Ireland final – we will have a report next week. The Mounthawk u16 Girls did lose out in their All Ireland semi-final but did very well to reach the last four. Kerry schools have a good record at National level which of course leads on to many players making it at senior level. ENGINES READY FOR ROAD:

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Rallying has a long history in Kerry and while it has being going through some tough times with insurance premiums etc things are looking up. One of the big initiatives in Kerry last year was the inaugural Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Championship where members of the Kerry Motor Club and the Killarney and District Motor clubs competed against each other for the title of County Champion and we all know how coveted a County title is in ones chosen sport. Rob Duggan won the Drivers title with Damien Fleming taking the co-drivers crown. As we all know rallying can be a dangerous sport and Sean Hickey and Noel Fleming were presented with the first Paudie Casey Memorial Trophy – called after a man who was involved in all aspects of the sport. They duo were the first to come upon an accident and did everything they could to help the crew who thankfully are now well on the way to recovery. Tralee’s Ballybeggan Park is the idea venue for Autocross and the Christmas event was won by Ronan Mackie from Newry. Local’s Mike O’Connor and Mossie Costello won the Saloon and Junior titles. Kerry will also again hold a number of rallies on what is recognised as some of the best stages in the country. First up will be the Circuit of Kerry based in the Rose Hotel which will take place on April 7th with Clerk of the Course Eoin Duffin and his team working hard on the stages. The Rally of the Lakes in May will again attract thousands of fans from all over the country while the Historic Rally will round things off in December. ON THE BIKE: Cycling clubs have really expanded their numbers over the past few years as can be seen on the roads most weekends with ride-outs taking place by most clubs. The League and the Time Trial League and County Championships will again be hotly contested. Of course the big races are the Tralee based Lacey Cup which will open the Munster Cycling season. And then at Easter the four day Ras Mumhan will see and international field in the county for the Killorglin based race. On the administrative side there are now three Kerry men on the Cycling Ireland national executive. Tralee hotelier Michael Mannix is the Treasurer with Eugene Moriarty working on the High Performance side and Michael Concannon who has been elected Secretary. AT THE DOGS: The Kingdom Greyhound stadium continues to be one of the top sporting arenas in the county attracting huge crowds and also giving many clubs a great opportunity to raise funds. On the track and on the coursing courses Kerry dogs continue to be successful led by Liam Dowling kennels. There will also be a number of dogs in contention in the National coursing finals in

Powerstown Park in Clonmel in the coming weeks. THE OVAL BALL: Tralee Rugby Club had a very good 2018 especially on the Ladies front. The club caters for huge numbers from underage up. And of course players with Kerry connections like Ultan Dillane, JJ Hanrahan, Jack Daly as well as a number of ladies are continuing to make their names on the international front. IN THE WATER: The Tralee Swimming Club is one of the biggest in the country and swims take place all year round. And of course the Christmas Day swim again attracted hundreds into the water and hundreds more on the shore. SILVER JUBILEE OF THE ‘TWELVE SWIMS OF CHRISTMAS’ AT FENIT BATHING SLIP: This year also saw the Silver Jubilee of the Twelve Swims of Christmas hosted by the Tralee Bay Swimming Club. Despite all the weather that has been thrown at the swimmers over the last 25 years this challenge has always been completed. This year the weather was lovely and mild for the swims with11 taking place at the bathing slip and the 12th on Locke’s Beach on Christmas Day. The positive news about the restoration of the diving boards generated great excitement at the bathing slip this Christmas. Who knows, maybe a new tradition will begin next year – the twelve ice dives of Christmas! OTHER SPORTING ARENAS: And there are lots of sports that I didn’t mention above but who are all doing great work. Like the Tralee Harriers who continue to produce athletes of a national standard, the Tralee Golf club where it is not just the locals who play their but also the number of visitors it attracts and of course the work that is being done in the juvenile section, the Kingdom Swimming club and of course the Community Games groups who do such great work with the children in their area. And one of the clubs who I follow are the Kingdom Wheelblasters who provide wheelchair sports and who work away without getting the attention they deserve which is why we always give them a mention when we can. INCLUSION OF ALL AND THE GROWTH IN FEMALE PARTICIPATION: If there are two areas that I would love to see worked on by all clubs over the next twelve months are their inclusion of all policies and their plans for the growth in female participation. There is on-going work being done by many clubs to ensure that they include everybody in their activities. I would love to see Football for All getting more numbers at either St Brendan’s Park or the KDL All Weather. There are huge benefits for both

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

the players and those organising these clubs, as I know from the work being done by the Killarney Celtic FFA club. Soccer is one of the sports were everybody of all levels of ability can play. On the 20x20 initiative to grow female participation by 20% by 2020 all clubs should be looking to see how that can make this happen in their own club. Some sports are ahead of others in this field and it was great from a soccer point of view this year to see The Park entering an 16’s Girls team. Hopefully next year they will have a team at 12’s or maybe two with a battle between the Park and Dynamos Girls teams one to look forward to. For sports like the GAA and basketball who have done great work over a long number of year to attract their female members their challenge will be to see can the halt the drop-off once the girls reach 16. If all of our wonderful sporting organisations in Tralee continue to improve and grow and succeed at the two initiatives I have mentioned above and if the powers that be continue or should I say increase their support then it’s a win-win for everyone even if on the field or court they do suffer some losses. LOCAL SHORTS: As we set out on a New Year can I thank in advance all those who will send notes to this column. We will do all we can to promote all our wonderful sporting clubs in Tralee. The Advertiser is your must –read local publication and Talking Sport is your dedicated Tralee sporting column – enjoy reading it over the next twelve months. AT THE TRACK: Racing on Friday night commences at 7.42pm but there is no racing on Saturday night. There will be racing again on Sunday with the first of 8 off at 6.35pm. The track is currently taking entries for the GMHD.ie juvenile classic open novice 525yds starting on Friday February 15th. Hurdle racing is also coming back to Tralee with a novice 525 yard stake starting on Friday January 18th. STACKS NEWSBefore we look at the Stacks Juvenile notes, we must congratulate Mairead Fernane on her election as Chairperson of the Austin Stacks GAA club. Mairead has given a lifetime of service to many organisations and was the ideal candidate to become the first female chair of this prestigious club. The u6’s and u8’s are back in training this Sunday in the Mounthawk Gym starting at 11am with the u10’s on the CBS The Green’s Astro from the same time. The u14’s will also be back in training shortly for the annual Nemo Rangers Tournament that takes place at the end of the month. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 14,15,16 and 20 and the next jackpot will be e4,100 with the draw taking place in Keane’s Bar on Sunday night. Celebrating the clubs Past and Building the Future – the club will be celebrating all its successes from 1989 at a function on Saturday February 16th in the Rose Hotel. The Seniors are back in training for the 2019 season and like all teams now know their League division dates. The Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle takes place this Saturday, January 12th leaving the GAA grounds at 11am. KERRY SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY: The Kerry Schools Cross-Country Championship takes place next Thursday January 17th in The Demesne Killarney with the first race off at 11.30am. There will be races for Minors, Juniors, Intermediate and Seniors. ON THE GREEN – TRALEE GOLF CLUB: The winners of the 14 Hole Mixed-Scramble were Alan Kelly, Gene Kelly and John Paul Enright. The Best Ladies score came from Angela Enright, Paula O’Sullivan and Antoinette Sayers. In the Ladies Club the 14 Hole December Singles was won by Michelle Moore from Mary O’Donnell.
