LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Darius was identified as male at birth, but he feels and thinks like a female and is undergoing gender change treatment. He is now aged 30 years of age. He wishes to change his gender and change his name and is wondering how he can go about this. Prior to 2015 it was not possible to legally change one’s gender in Ireland. Then the Gender Recognition Act 2015 came in and this allowed people to apply for a gender recognition certificate which recognised that they had changed their gender from the gender identified on the birth certificate. It does not change the birth certificate as Darius would have been seen as a boy and then a man under this birth certificate until he applied for the gender recognition certificate. When you legally change your gender, you are given a gender recognition certificate. This certificate can also state your new name, if you have chosen to change it. This can be done prior to applying for the certificate by Deed poll choosing a name appropriate to the new gender. A Deed poll is a declaration of change of name from new name to old name and in order to get it recognised legally it has to be enrolled in the central office of the high court. Darius has decided to change his name to Deirdre and keep his surname the same. Then once one has the gender recognition certificate in the new name it is possible to apply to get a fresh amended birth certificate in the new name thus providing a new evidence of identity. Identity and who we are, where we are from , our ancestry and heritage is a very important human right at the end of the day and this was recognised by the High Court in the Lydia Foy case where Lydia was a trailblazer for gender and identity rights. As a result of her long running battle to gain recognition of her gender change from male to female we now have a Gender Recognition Act 2015 which allows people to simply declare their gender without complicated court orders or medical reports. Special requirements apply to 16/17 year olds wishing to change their gender which involves a court application. Lawquip: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” Maya Angelou If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to miriam.mcgillycuddy@gmail.com Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. Lena With so many brands and products on the market, choosing the best products for your skin can be confusing. At CHRC, our practitioner will assess your skin and use UV analysis to help you to visualise the characteristics within the layers of your skin. This ensures we only prescribe products that will suit your skin and target your specific concerns. If your concerns include lines and wrinkles, Retinol is a very good active to target this issue. It encourages aged skin cells to behave in a more youthful manner, refining the skin and enhancing your skin’s radiance. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, the group of fat-soluble vitamins found in carrots, eggs and sweet potatoes. Retinol stimulates collagen, increases cell turnover and creates smoother and more even toned skin. It can also inhibit pigmentation which can be very ageing on the skin. Acne skin also benefits from its use by working on cell turnover and unclogging pores; it regulates oily skin and minimises breakouts. At CHRC, our AlumierMD medical grade skincare range includes retinol resurfacing serums. These come in 3 strengths so that we can start getting the skin used to actives and build up gradually. The retinol is encapsulated which allows a slow release into the skin overnight, so you can enjoy the benefits without irritation. Our retinol eye cream also works on fine lines and wrinkles and puffiness, increasing firmness and elasticity but my absolute favourite is the neck and dećolleté firming cream.

With this welcome return comes some big news, the Tralee Food Festival has partnered with Calor Ireland as its major sponsor. After what should have seen the festival mark its 6th year in 2020, the Tralee Food Festival and its committee are working hard to deliver the biggest festival yet. With a well renowned national partner in Calor, organisers are excited to see the festival grow in size. Calor has committed resources and expertise to support with the expanded programme of events, further cementing Tralee Food Festival as a ‘must-attend’ on the Foodie calendar. Calor has been supporting grass roots community

Local communities are the beating heart of its business and through its community engagement, corporate commitment, and employee volunteering initiatives, the company is making a difference in local communities throughout the island of Ireland. Ideally located, Tralee is very fortunate to be able to celebrate the amazing food offerings of the region. Our chefs, restaurants, food producers and establishments have earned a strong reputation for their creativity and skill. This was confirmed after Tralee was shortlisted for the Foodie Town Destination awards in 2019. This year’s festival will include all the regular favourites: artisan food markets in the square; street food on the Mall; two day Taste Trails; Food & Family Day; Cooking
Demonstrations; Drinks Trail; live music; plus a few surprises along the way. David Scott, the festival coordinator, said, ‘After a 2-year hiatus the return of the food festival is very welcome news for Tralee. TFF has always been committed to improving on the festival each year and now that we’re returning it has to be bigger than ever before and I know people are eager to get back out enjoying themselves.’ Speaking about the partnership, Jennifer Fagan, Retail Brand Manager at Calor, said: “Calor is truly delighted to be lead sponsor for the Tralee Food Festival, and in events taking place throughout the course of the

Keep your Business in Tralee and keep Tralee in Business!
A BASKET FULL OF MAGIC Short Story by: Fidelma Philomena Fitzgerald St, Patrick’s morning arrived once again. Another year rolled round for recognition of the Great Saint Himself. St, Patricks Mission had been to ban all snakes from the Great Isle of Ireland. He had a particular fondness for the kingdom of Kerry. He double checked out county twice. This is the very reason our pastures are many shades of green and waters exceptionally beautifully Blue. He Banished more then Snakes, He banished any darkness that had been left from the visitation of such serpents. Now having a country and county safe of all hissing and danger from our precious land we celebrate every year the work done back in the 5th century. Many believe that St Patrick carried out this work alone. However, this is not the case. He had majestical help throughout Ireland from the fairy forts the lands of leprechauns, the tree like men and women, Maggie mae, Anajata and Glouster Williams, and all the ferlups that we see as flowers. The Town of Tralee in the Kingdom of Kerry dwelled a Special person who had the ability to create unbelievable magic, Joy, wonder and awe in memory of St Patrick and the Kingdom being saved so many moons ago. Speaking of the moon, allow me to share this fact. All the saints and angels that ever existed and the ones being daily recruited had the advantage of immense light at night all over the world at the very same time due to the moon. It is there very own Flashlight. Us mere mortals would never understand what the universe offers angels and saints. Yet we have all had that moment where we can not explain. Mena Fellows Knew though and always admired and respected the power of the unknown. Mena grew up in the town of Tralee back in the 1940s… As a young girl Mena often experienced things beyond human capability. This she never shared with anyone until she turned the great age of 85 and decided one day to tell me
14
Friday 11th March 2022
this spectacular tail of St Patricks celebrations. Mena had a 2-wheeler bike that carried a front basket woven strongly in oval shape and it sat safely and securely under the handlebars of her bike named Stel. At the age of 19 Mena had rose that morning of the 17th of March to be excited of the day’s celebrations and festivities. After helping her mom with chores and duties around the house. Mena was sent to the far outreach of Blenerville to collect some green leaf clover to pin to the collars and breast pockets of her family, fiancé Bill, and neighbours. The Day was fine and free, Mena cycled with optimism and joy awaiting the days celebrations
of dance, and song, with merriment from all around. Mena parked her bike upright against the stone wall as she collected many 3-leaf clovers and tucked them safely into her scarf that she placed securely into her basket as she got herself ready to return home. Mena made the decision to cycle through town rather then go the old road home. As she peddled into town, she felt a little lightheaded due to a smell of real strong mint and vast sparkle of colour growing and Rising from her basket beneath her. Menas face lit up to Glitter from the reflection she looked upon. There had been an immediate intuition to be inspirational and throw the clover left and right as she cycled no matter how many fistfuls, she threw from the basket it kept growing and rising until she reached the very top of the town. Mena stood to a stop and looked behind her as she turned her bike. The
town of Tralee sparkled majestically in a powerful brightness of many different shades of green to be exact 40 shades. This light grew from 3 leaf clovers everywhere from the rooftops, downpipes, windowsills of shopfronts and houses. The paths flushed as a bedded carpet of greenery and mallow to touch. Mena could neither believe nor explain what had been happening. Everyone everywhere in town stood wide eyed and jaw dropped. A natural miracle of beauty ran through the town of Tralee at the very touch of the hand of Mena. This phenomenon would not or could not ever be explained. The 66 years that followed the very same Wonder happened year after year until the 6th day of the 6th month when the angels and saints travelled together to take Mena home. Mena had done lots and lots of different things in life and seen lots and lots of life. Yet it was her spirit that lit the sparkle of our 3-leaf clover that spread throughout the town of Tralee, and as all the nights fell year after year the shine of the streets and moon combined left the visions of Saints, Angels, Ferlups and Fairies, Pure Pastures of Green in our Magical, Mystical, Beautiful Scene. Within The Kingdom of Kerry, a town named Tralee. This year for sure look out and implore the Sparkle of St Patrick and his mission galore.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE! MORE GREAT ONE - LINERS! My wife told me to stop impersonating a flamingo. I had to put my foot down. I was wondering why the frisbee kept getting bigger and bigger, but then it hit me. Don’t you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do. It takes a lot of balls to golf the way I do. The problem with kleptomaniacs is that they always take things literally. I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off. Most people are shocked when they find out how bad I am as an electrician. My wife just found out I replaced our bed with a trampoline. She hit the ceiling! I was addicted to the hokey pokey, but then I turned myself around. I told my girlfriend she drew her eyebrows too high. She seemed surprised. People who use selfie sticks really need to have a good, long look at themselves. Just burned 2,000 calories. That’s the last time I leave brownies in the oven while I nap.
I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said, ‘Analogue.’ I said, ‘No, just a watch.’

GROWN-UP CHICKEN NUGGETS WITH HERB AND RADISH SALAD
You know that feeling, the feeling you get when sometimes you just want something from your childhood... maybe fish fingers? A homemade burger? Moms stew, Chips with just salt n’ vinegar... It can bring you right back! But nowadays you’re more sensible, right? So not the greasy stuff! Here is a take on proper breaded chicken with a tasty salad and this is designed to be guilt free .So go on , enjoy it and live a little!
INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
• •
2 tablespoons minced shallot 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste ]¼ teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups spicy salad greens, such as rocket, spinach, mizuna, mâche, tatsoi, and/or radish leaves 2 cups loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves ½ cup loosely packed mixed fresh herbs, such as mint, dill,
• • • • • • • • • • •
chives, basil, and coriander ]½ cup thinly sliced radishes 2 chicken breasts 2 ½ cups panko breadcrumb 2 1/8ounces flour 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon water ]¾ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste ¾ teaspoon black pepper 6 tablespoons grapeseed or safflower oil, divided 4 ½ tablespoons butter, divided
METHOD Combine shallot, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Let stand 5 minutes. Add olive oil; whisk to combine. Combine salad greens, parsley, mixed herbs, and radishes in a large bowl. Set aside. Place chicken breasts on a cutting board; cut each chicken breast in half horizontally. Cut each chicken breast half into 3 rectangular pieces to yield 12 pieces. Using a meat mallet or rolling pin, flatten chicken pieces to 1/3-inch thickness Place panko and flour on 2 separate plates. In a shallow bowl , whisk together eggs, mustard, and 1 tablespoon water. Season chicken pieces on both sides with salt and pepper. Working with 2 pieces at a time , coat chicken with flour, patting to shake off excess. Dip in egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Place cutlets in panko, turning carefully to coat both sides of chicken pieces. Arrange breaded cutlets on plate. Heat 2 tablespoons oil and 1 1/2 tablespoons butter in a large pan over medium to medium-high. Once butter stops foaming, add as many cutlets as will fit without overlapping; cook, adjusting heat so cutlets sizzle but fat doesn’t begin to smoke, until browned and crisp, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towel–lined plate to drain; sprinkle with salt to taste while still hot. Repeat process 2 times with remaining oil, butter, and cutlets. Pour dressing onto greens; toss salad, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide cutlets and salad among 4 plates. Garnish salads with edible flowers, if desired, and serve with lemon wedges

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE WARRIORS Garvey’s Tralee Warriors took another step towards securing a home League quarter final playoff with a 74-65 win over Team 360 Financial Killorglin at the Killorglin Sports Complex on Saturday night. Allied to C&S Neptune’s defeat to Tradehouse Central Ballincollig in Cork, it leaves the Warriors in prime position to host a quarter final playoff on the weekend of the 19th/20th of March The vocal home crowd called for a final push early in the fourth quarter and their team duly obliged with Shane O’Connell and Francis cutting the gap to 12. A pull up two from Calixte and another arced effort from Jokubaitis looked to have restored order but Killorglin took off on a run that saw them shoot their way right back into the contest. Arriaga and player coach Declan Wall lifted the home crowd with two big threes and when Allan Thomas returned three from three from the free throw line and followed that up with another fast break score after Francis had batted in a rebound, the hosts had cut the Warriors lead to 66-62 with two minutes on the clock. However, just when a shock result looked likely, former Killorglin star Daniel Jokubaitis delivered two killer scores with identical threes to seal the win and bring the Warriors fans to their feet. Aaron Calixte’s two from two from the line late on added a little shine to the final scoreline of 74-65. TOP SCORERS: Team 360 Financial Killorglin: Xavier Arriaga 17, Allan Thomas 10, Simon Francis 10 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Aaron Calixte 22, Nikola Roso 14 Daniel Jokubaitis 14 Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is the final game of the regulation League season when they face a trip to Neptune Stadium to face C&S Neptune, the side they defeated to claim the Pat Duffy National Cup in Dublin in January on Saturday evening with tip off at 6.30pm. TRALEE TOWN BOARD FIXTURES We the Tralee Board wish Jack and the Players the best of luck on Saturday evening against Mayo, especially to our players from the Tralee District Club’s. We welcome

On Sunday 13th @ 12.30 Kerins O’Rahillys are up against Na Gaeil. Also on Sunday 13th @ 1.30 you have Ballymac playing against St. Pats. In the Tralee St Brendan’s Under 13 League Sponsored by Timberland, Kitchens & Flooring Upcoming Fixtures for the Week: Austin Stacks are playing John Mitchels at 6pm Wednesday 9th in John Mitchels GAA Grounds. Sunday 13th at 4pm is a busy one! In division 1 we have Ballymac against Na Gaeil, division 2 sees Kerins O’Rahillys taking on Ardfert and Churchill taking on St Pats and in division 3 we will see John Mitchels B v Austin Stacks B and Ardfert B V Ballymac B. PARNELLS NEWS The Tralee Parnells under 7s completed their fifth week of indoor hurling on Saturday, the excitement and enthusiasm from these young players was great to see and the training session was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A special thank you to the volunteer parents and youth coaches who work with the coaches to make it run all the more smoothly. Congratulations to this week’s player of the week Aoife O’Gorman and last week’s player of the week Mattie Quill, well done to both players. The group continue to meet on Saturday at 3pm in the MTU Sports hall. New players are always welcome to come along. The club can provide a hurley and helmet and it is not necessary pay the membership fee while trying it out for a few weeks. On a lovely fresh spring day in ideal conditions for hurling at this time of year, our Senior Hurlers started their league campaign with a comprehensive win away to Dr Crokes of Killarney on Sunday. The backbone of the team consisted of our six county representatives together with our young academy players who were the heroes of that famous U21 North Kerry victory a few months ago made up a young and fit Parnells team. AUSTIN STACKS There was a good turnout for the re-scheduled Austin Stacks GAA
Race Night which was held at the clubhouse in Connolly Park on Friday 4th March. This event was organised to raise funds to alleviate the costs of running the juvenile boys and girls football and finance pitch maintenance and upgrades. The operation of the event on the night was co-ordinated by Fundraising Events Group with their Sales and Marketing Director, Jimmy Bouchier operating the night’s ten races. The last race was an auction race with the bids being taken by Eddie Barrett. Help our Ladies Club get a new set of Jerseys! Each time Lidl Plus registered users spend more than €30 in their local Lidl store and scan their app at the till until Sunday 27th March, they will receive a stamp on their digital stamp card. Alternatively, ask the cashier to add your shopping points to our Club Treasurer’s number - 086 0767415. Multiple stamps can be earned in each shop if a multiple of €30 is spent (€60 = 2 stamps, €90 = 3 stamps, etc.) and once six stamps have been collected, users can submit their completed stamp card via the app where their stamps are then added to their chosen club’s total. After a draw in round one, away to Keel/Listry, a week ago we now travel to Killorglin on this Saturday (12th March) for a round 2 game against Laune Rangers. Please note that the throw-in time has now been brought forward to 2pm. Then we have home games in the remaining three rounds against Dr. Crokes (19th March), Kenmare Shamrocks (26th March) and Kilcummin (4th April). The League will conclude with two semi finals and a final. ST PATS GAA CLUB We had a fantastic turnout of 18 girls on Sunday in the Kerry Sports Academy. We welcomed more new girls to our growing group. The emphasis today was on as many touches of the ball as possible with a ball in hand for all the girls. We worked on our skills including evasion & fundamental movements. The girls are enjoying the high energy sessions and are making friends. Fantastic effort as always by Emma Higgins who won the player of the week trophy. Great practice is paying off! Looking forward to another session in the hall See you all next Sunday at 11am. Our seniors have a back game from Round 1 of Tralee/St Brendan’s League against Ballymac, it will be played on the 13th of March at 12.30pm in Ballymac. The club would like to extend its sympathy to the families and friends of Mossie Quirke Blennerville and Fr John Lawlor Ardfert.

Our minor ladies are in division 3 this year along with Beale / Ballyduff, Castleisland Desmonds, Fossa, Moyvane and Scartaglin. We have home advantage for our first game when we meet Fossa on April 1st… time etc. TBC. For anyone who is not already aware, Lidl is currently running a promotion in support of ladies football and we’d really appreciate everyone’s help .. ladies, juveniles and seniors! PLEASE GIVE US YOUR SUPPORT BECAUSE TOGETHER WE ARE ONE CLUB. All you have to do is download the Lidl Plus app, select Kerins O’Rahilly’s GAA Club as the club you would like to support and every time you spend over €30 in their store and scan the app, you’ll receive a stamp on your digital stamp card. Another great turn out for our Juvenile Academy on Sunday morning. All enjoyed the drills and games they played under the guidance of our fantastic coaches. We welcomed some new players to different age groups and we hope they enjoy it as much as all the other children do. A little reminder going forward all information and communication will only be through clubzap, you can also do your registration through this if you have not already done so. Please ensure you have it downloaded and installed. If you have any queries please contact us on 086 3741301 or email: info@ kerinsorahillys.com. Thank you to St. Pats for hosting the game and we look forward to playing you again soon. U17 Boys Our U17’s took on Milltown Castlemaine in the County League, despite everyone putting in their best effort we were defeated with a score line of Milltown Castlemaine 5-10 Kerins O’Rahillys 0-6.
