Medical Matters MENINGITIS BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY Meningitis is a serious illness involving inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It is mainly caused by bacteria or viruses. Bacterial meningitis is less common but is usually more serious than viral meningitis and may be accompanied by septicaemia (blood poisoning). Bacterial meningitis requires urgent treatment with antibiotics and hospital admission. It can develop rapidly within a few hours and can be fatal even in fit healthy children or adults. There has been a recent increase in cases nationally. The illness occurs most frequently in young children and adolescents, usually as isolated cases. Signs and symptoms may include: • High temperature (sometimes with cold hands and feet) • Joint or muscle pain • Rapid breathing • Severe Headaches • Sleepy or confused • Discomfort from bright light • Neck stiffness • Vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea • Non-blanching rash may appear which may be tiny red pin pricks that may develop to purple bruises. This rash does not fade under pressure. Sometimes there is no rash.
These signs can mimic other illnesses such as the flu (influenza) but, by in large, children and adults with meningitis tend to be sicker with a more severe headache, are more likely to be vomiting, are more lethargic and are less likely to respond to paracetamol (“Calpol”). The flu does not cause a rash. If you are unsure check with your GP urgently. Parents of children should ensure that they are up-to-date regarding their childhood meningococcal vaccinations. If your child has missed some of their routine childhood vaccine you can avail of free “catch up” vaccines from your GP up to the age of 10 years old. Older children may need to pay for catch up vaccines Since 2014-15, 2nd level students have been offered a meningitis C vaccine in school. If your child is still in secondary school and did not get this vaccine they can still get it free from the school immunization teams at a “mop up” clinic. Older teenagers and young adults up to the age of 23 years who never received a MenC vaccine are recommended to get the vaccine (Meningitis ACWY vaccine) from their GP but there will be a charge for this even if you have a medical card.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerry says Guten Tag at travel fair in Stuttgart Tourism Ireland in Germany kicked off its 2019 programme of promotions at CMT (holiday exhibition) in Stuttgart this week. Tourism Ireland is joined at CMT by 14 tourism businesses – including Kerry County Council – from the island of Ireland and Germany. CMT is one of the biggest travel fairs in Germany, attracting more than 265,000 visitors – or potential holidaymakers for Ireland – looking for ideas and suggestions for their next holiday. CMT also attracts leading tour operators and travel agents, as well as around 1,500 travel journalists, during the nine-day event. Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for
Central Europe, said: “CMT in Stuttgart is our first travel fair of the year, providing an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the many great things to see and do in Kerry and to encourage German travellers to put Ireland on their holiday ‘wish-list’ for 2019.” Zoë Redmond continued: “2018 was the eighth consecutive year of growth for German visitor numbers to the island of Ireland, when we welcomed around 780,000 German visitors. Tourism Ireland will roll out an extensive and targeted programme of activity throughout 2019 – to keep the momentum going and build on

Last month, Tourism Ireland launched its new global campaign, ‘Fill Your Heart with Ireland’. Ads for Ireland have been running in German cinemas during December and on TV during January – reaching millions of viewers. Promoting the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East, Dublin, Belfast and the Causeway Coastal Route will continue to be a major focus of Tourism Ireland’s activity in Germany, and elsewhere around the world, in 2019. The organisation will also continue to highlight ease of access from Germany to the island of Ireland.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Na Gaeil Juvenile Club
“Na Gaeil Juveniles Boys and Girls had a wonderful year and performed well to build on the well deserved club of the year award won in 2017 They had a hugely successful year last year with representation in every grade on County teams up to senior level in both boys and girls. Devon Burns was on the Minor All Ireland winning team and Jack Barry was centre field on the Kerry Senior Team that won the Munster Final. Andrew Barry played National League for Kerry and played at centre back on the Kerry Junior All Ireland winning team. Diarmuid O’Connor and Stefan Okunbor played on the Kerry U20 team and both players were selected on the Eirgrid U20 Team of the year. Mary O’Connell played in the U16 All Ireland Ladies Final
and Jayden Lucey with the Kerry Minor Ladies. The juvenile Boys won county titles at U12, U14 and Minor levels and were victorious in Division 1 of the U 16 Co. League defeating Dr. Crokes in a keenly contested final in Austin Stack Park. Juvenile teams also won Town Board and St. Brendan’s Board titles. The girls won various titles and North Kerry Leagues. The club are also riding the crest of a wave at senior level with Na Gaeil senior men and women playing Div 1 football in the County League for the coming season. Our men played in the County Junior Final last season and gained promotion to Div 1 while our Ladies won the Div 1 County title in Kerry, the Munster Final and were unlucky to be beaten in the All Ireland Semi Final.
Training commences back in the Tralee Sports complex with Football and Fun from U6
to U12 on Sunday mornings from 10 to 12 before returning to Kileen in March.”
Patsy’s Transformation at Unislim Super glamourous Patsy Nolan used to hide in the background. Now since losing almost 5stone, she is more confident than ever and is standing tall and leading the troops at her own Unislim class in Limerick.
myself, but this was short lived. I soon met my husband, we both worked shift hours, so picking up the phone to order take outs or going out to eat seemed like a much more convenient option than cooking. How wrong was I!
Growing up, I would have always been a bit overweight. I started comfort eating after being bullied at age 13 and had to change schools. Thankfully, I found great friends in my new school, but would still reach for crisps, chocolate and junk food, a habit that would continue into my forties.
I lost some weight before our wedding, but once the honeymoon was over, I went back to my old ways and after the birth of each of two sons, the weight just kept topping up.
I moved out when I was 24 and started cooking for
I always ate a breakfast but would pick at bars of chocolate instead of eating lunch and while cooking dinner for my family, I would pick at whatever was in front of me. It wasn’t until I saw a picture of myself on Facebook that my weight gain really hit home. I’d been at a 40th birthday party and I spotted a photo of me with two friends and I got such a shock, I started crying. I hadn’t realized I’d let myself go as bad as I had. In October 2014, I asked my sister if she’d join a slimming group and she said she would. However, life kept getting in the way and it wasn’t until April 2015 that I actually walked into my first Unislim class in Newcastle West.

I was nervous, but I decided there and then that I needed to make this work. My leader, Ann Hynes was brilliant. She said, ‘We’re going to tackle this one pound at a time’ and that’s exactly what I did. I couldn’t believe it when I lost 6 pounds in my first week! People were asking me what I was doing differently, and my answer was “I am eating more food than ever”. I learned that you have to eat to get your metabolism moving and that’s something I wasn’t doing before. That’s what I love about Unislim, it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change. They teach you about food, they teach you about eating healthy delicious food. The person you see now and the person I was in 2014 are two different people. I wouldn’t have put myself forward for anything, I wouldn’t have been able to stand up in public and speak. I was too embarrassed to be seen out walking before, as I was so big. When I joined Unislim I started some exercise classes but always stayed at the back of the class. Now, I’ve become a Unislim leader and have the confidence to stand up and give a class talk every week.
my two sisters and two nieces have also joined Unislim and are loving it. I have a 12-yearold and a 15-year-old son and my new attitude on life has had a knock-on effect on them. They’re starting to say, ‘I can do this’ and ‘I’ll try that’ when they see me trying things. My weight held me back in so many ways. I now believe ‘I can do’ whatever I set my mind to and nothing’s going to stop me. I have a fear of water but I’m about to learn to swim and I know I will do it. It’s just a confidence thing. I’m enjoying my life and I am really excited for the future.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. Since last week I’ve been mad job hunting back in Sydney - LONGEST WEEK OF MY LIFE! But I eventually got the #1 job I wanted and I’m over the moon. I get to be glam at work again wooooooo! (It’s been a while) With saying that, this week I’m gonna be talking all things work glam - I actually don’t think I’ve talked about that in this page before? Anyway… Here’s some of my work glam tips, products so you don’t have to spend ages getting ready!
• CLEANSE - Cleanse your face every morning? If yes, good. If no, why? Cleansing your face in the morning before work is the best way to 1) wake yourself up and 2) prep your skin for a long wear makeup look. My current favourite cleanser is the Kiehls • LONG LASTING FOUNDATION - Finding a foundation that works with your skin and sits well is key for work glam. Personally I find the Too Faced Born This Way foundation amazing and really long lasting, as long as I set it with my Laura Mercier Translucent Powder & a setting spray. • NO PRESSURE - You should never feel pressurised to wear makeup in the workplace if it makes you feel uncomfortable. The same goes
with your makeup style, you do you hunnay! • NUDE LIPGLOSS - One of my favourite tips is to bring a nude lipgloss with a slight tint to work (my personal favourite is NYX Buttergloss in the shade Tiramisu) that way you don’t have to mess about with reapplying lip liner/ lipstick throughout the day. A quick swipe of gloss and you’re good to go! • RE-USE YOUR LASHES - If you’re a gal who loves to stick on a pair of lashes in the morning for work, be

sure you are re using them! We’re not out here trying to spend all our wages on lashes in 2019. If you mind them and clean them (using eye-makeup remover and a cotton bud) you can get at least 2 weeks out of a decent pair of lashes. I recommend Ardell wispies 110%. • ORGANISE - Keep all the makeup you use everyday in one separate makeup bag, that way you’re not rushing about in the morning trying to find things! • IF IN DOUBT, RED LIP - If you wanna be glam but don’t really have much time to put effort in in the mornings, just pop on a red lip with your base and you’re good to go. There you go! A few tips for all my guys and gals that love a bit of work glam! If you want to keep up with me and my daily antics, follow me on Instagram @ rebecca.shortt. Until next week, keep shining!

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! The amount of things I see online where girls are asking ‘how do I get rid of cellulite/stretch marks’ is insane, so I said I’d address it. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING EITHER OF THESE THINGS, IT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL. NOT UGLY OR UNHEALTHY, Because you’re a woman, you will have a different collagen structures in your thigh area than men due to hormones. Also, because women have high levels of estrogen, they tend to store more fat because we are designed to be able to carry an unborn child so we need to store extra fat. Depending on your collagen structure and hormonal levels you may be more or less susceptible to cellulite.
If you want to ‘improve’ the appearance of your cellulite, move more. Walk more, get that blood circulating and that will help with any excess cellulite. But that won’t necessarily get rid of it. Weight lifting and building muscle can help but essentially you may never be able to get rid of it completely because that’s the way our bodies are designed. IT IS NORMAL. Nothing to be ashamed of or feel bad about.
PS: Most pictures you see online, if not all are edited. Nobody is ‘perfect’ and perfect is not something anyone should be aiming to be. Once you know you’re healthy, lead an active lifestyle and aim to have a positive outlook on your life and yourself, that’s all you should worry about!
Now onto stretch marks, again they can be due to your body changing, which happens to most women as they get older and go through puberty/pregnancy. They are nothing to be ashamed of and are not ‘bad’. Although if they really bother you and you can remember to do it daily, applying bio oil can help. You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

Winter Wellness - Natural Solutions We all know how important it is to support our immune systems to enable us to stay healthy. Coughs, colds and sniffles only catch you if your immune system is down. If they do catch up with you it’s important to know what works to help relieve your symptoms. If you do get sick, there’s not much to do except rest, right? Actually, a number of natural remedies have been shown to help speed up recovery and may significantly reduce the time your symptoms last. COLD VS FLU • The common cold: Although generally benign, cold viruses result in significant cost to the economy in lost work days and school attendance. Symptoms may include nasal congestion and discharge, sneezing, coughs, sore throat and fever. • Influenza or “The Flu”: Influenza virus infection, one of the most common infectious diseases is a highly contagious airborne disease, which typically occurs in winter months. Symptoms can include fever, headaches, muscle pain and fatigue. Colds and flu can be made worse by physical and emotional stress, which are known to reduce your immunity and as a result could increase risk of infection. supporting healthy immunity is possible with nutrients such as: ZINC: taken withiin 24hours at the on set of symptoms may help to cut the risk of symptoms lasting 7 days by half. This mineral plays a critical role in the proper functioning of the immune system. VITAMIN D: 800iu to 2000iu of Vitamin D daily can have a positive effect in helping to reduce infections as it helps promote a strong immune system ELDERBERRY: This has a direct anti-viral and anti-bacterial effect. It may
help to reduce the symptoms of flu when taken in the first few days of infections and then continued for at least 5 days. It is a good idea to take a lower maintenance dose throughout the winter months. Available for adults and children over 1yr. P4-MAX CAPSUELS: The potent ingredients in P4 MAX work together to help create an incredibly strong antioxidant effect and help support your immune system. Take at the onset of a cold for maximum effect. May also be taken daily throughout the winter months or whenever your immune system may be compromised . Specially tailored to compliment a busy lifestyle. OLIVE LEAF: Comvita Olive Leaf Extract is high in antioxidants and is a perfect support for your weakened immune system. It may help to relieve coughs and colds and has been used for centuries to help ward off viruses such as colds and flu due to its high anti-viral properties. If you have a cold or flu, make sure you: • Drink fluids to maintain hydration • Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke • Wash hands regularly to prevent infecting others • Take time out to relax, rest and recover • Maintain healthy eating Until next time, stay healthy.

“KEEP IT SIMPLE” As the end of January approaches it is true for many of us that the “New Years resolutions” have already fallen by the wayside or for many they may be still in the planning stages. Perhaps the resolutions were too mammoth to begin with ………My advice is to keep it simple.
The ability to stand on one leg is important. When walking you spend about 40% of time with one foot on the ground as the other leg is swinging through the air. Improving your balance can help you improve sports performance and it may help you prevent falls which could cause more serious injury. It is also good for your brain. A single leg stance exercise is a simple way to start building better balance. It is easy to do and can be modified to increase the challenge as your balance improves. Many dentists agree that brushing your teeth takes at least two minutes.
until your balance improves. When you have mastered this you can start trying to balance on one leg with eyes closed….. So for New Years resolutions keep it simple…..
So here is my suggestion…… While brushing your teeth in the morning stand on one leg. One minute for the top teeth and one minute for the bottom. If one minute is too big a challenge, start with a shorter time and at least you have the sink to hold onto
If you follow my suggestion your simple exercise is good: • • for your balance • good for your endurance • good for your brain
•
& last but not least good for your pearly whites !!

Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc... Why '120'?

A historic house on the estate that serves as this wine's home base reputedly played refuge to 120 men who fought for Chilean independence from Spain in the 19th century. The smart patriots apparently hid in the wine cellar, which makes the name of this value-priced line of wines from big producer Santa Rita particularly apt. A wine is well made at this price doesn't need a back story, though. Light and zesty, it shows attractively plump middle and roundish texture, with notes of peach and grapefruit enhanced by herbs and flint. Perfect for light fare in the outdoors You'll be the life of the party with 120 Sauvignon Blanc * Offer available only at Carry Out in Tralee & Ardfert!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Live life film competition The National Live Life Film Competition for 2019 was officially launched on Thursday 10th January 2019 in Kerry College of Further Education. This is the 6th year of this hugely popular competition in memory of Tralee teenager Donal Walsh. The Competition aims to continue to spread Donal’s positive message as he began an anti-suicide conversation before he lost his cancer battle in 2013. Groups and individuals of all ages and abilities are invited to submit a two min film clip on a theme linked to positive thinking/ living. This year’s theme is “It All Works Out!” The fully-sponsored competition, now in its 6th year, culminates in the highly acclaimed annual awards ceremony attended by over 800 people with celebrity guests and bands. This year only the primary school awards will be presented at the Live Life Awards Ceremony. A new element is being introduced for the secondary school and adult entries as the shortlisted and winning entries will be screened on the big cinema screens at a separate Award
Ceremony.
The competition is fully sponsored and supported by local businesses and organisations and the event manager for the competition, Mary Lucey Principal of Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) stated that without this ongoing sponsorship and support, the competition would not continue and could not have grown from strength to strength as it has. This year will also see the assistance from Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) teachers and student groups in the organisation and management of the competition. Well known film and creative experts will judge the competition including Maurice Galway, Director of Dingle International Film Festival and Dingle Animation, Award Winning Producer Lisa Fingleton, Award Winning Creative Designer Paul Ruane; TV Producer Brian Hurley; Award Winning Author and Screenwriter Ailbhe Keogan; Actress, Writer and Producer Maeve McGrath and more. Sponsors for the competition are the Bons Secour Hospital,
Fenit RNLI Lifeboat Annual Fundraising 50km and 80km Cycle Fenit RNLI will hold its 16th annual cycle on Saturday May
11th 2019. This year’s cycle has two options for cyclists. There will be the traditional 50km route and a new 80km route. Both options will start and finish in Tralee. “All funds raised form the event will go directly to support the Fenit Lifeboat service. Lifeboat t-shirts will be presented to all participants and O’Donnell’s in Mounthawk will provide refreshments after the cycle. We are hoping to cater for our cyclists by offering an additional extended route this year. You can help by taking part or by sponsoring one of the cyclists or making a contribution on the day which is very much appreciated,” said Fenit Lifeboat Fundraising Manager Mike O’Connor.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PAY FOR PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
Great Start to the New Year for one lucky Cara Credit Union Member
Question I work part-time from Wednesday to Friday. This year Christmas fell on a Tuesday. Should I get paid for Christmas Day, even though I didn’t work that day? What about New Year’s Day which fell on the following Tuesday? Answer Christmas Day, St Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Day are public holidays. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are not. All workers are entitled to paid time off or pay for a public holiday. (Your employer can decide whether to give you time off or pay.) Part-time workers must have worked for the employer for at least 40 hours in the previous five-week period to have a public holiday entitlement. If you work part-time and the public holiday falls on a day that you usually work you are entitled to a day’s pay or a paid day off for the public holiday. Part-time workers who are not rostered to work on a public holiday are also entitled to pay or to paid time off for the public holiday. This is one-fifth of their normal pay for the week as compensation for the holiday. In your case, you should get one-fifth of your normal weekly pay for each of the two public holidays, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. So you should get the additional pay or the equivalent amount of time off. Your employer can decide which option to give you. If you have to work on a public holiday you are entitled to be paid at your usual rate and you are also entitled to either an additional day’s pay or a paid day off. You can get detailed information on employment rights from the workplacerelations.ie website.

What a great start to the new year for one lucky Cara Credit Union member Tara Flynn who won their Members Car Draw held on the 17th of December at their Annual General Meeting. Tara from Tralee drives away with a brand new 191 Kia Stonic purchased from McElligotts Tralee Ltd. Speaking to Tara as she collected her car from Cara Credit Union “I am absolutely delighted. I cannot believe I won the car. I was actually in the credit union the morning after their AGM opening a new born account for my daughter when Shane from the credit union asked was I the car draw member? I told him no as no one had contacted me, so he went and checked and hadn’t they been trying to phone me all morning but had an incorrect number for me. What a coincidence that I happen to call in that morning to open a newborn account. None of us could believe the coincidence. My car is 11 years old and we actively in the market for a brand new car this month so it comes at an opportune time. It’s a great start to the new year.” Tara wasn’t the only member to benefit from Cara Credit Union’s December Members Car Draw. The surplus funds left over from 2018 was raffled out to their car draw members in the form of cash prizes and 31 other members won €1,000 each in time for Christmas. Cara Credit Union run their car draw four times a year at a cost of €6.00 per draw. Their next Members Car Draw takes place at Easter, for further information visit their website www.caracreditunion.ie or call in to their offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.

TORQUING CARS! GIVING PUBLICANS VRT EXEMPTIONS WOULD HELP RURAL AREAS, SAYS SENATOR
A Fine Gael senator has called for a Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) exemption for publicans who carry customers home, in a move that could be worth around €2,200 for each vehicle. Senator Joe O’Reilly has broken ranks to warn that people in rural Ireland have been made “prisoners in their own homes” by tougher drink-driving laws. Mr O’Reilly said he supports the drink-drive clampdown - but he has said a number of tax incentives must be urgently implemented to provide alternative transport via hackney and taxi services. He has warned that bus and train services are not adequate to help arrest the decline in rural communities. A VRT exemption would be a “very cheap but effective measure”, Mr O’Reilly argued. VRT varies based on the model, age of the vehicle and mileage. Revenue’s VRT calculator shows that a Toyota Avensis - a model popular with taxi drivers - from 2015 with 80,000 miles on the clock costs just under €2,200. The Cavan representative also called for VRT reductions for local taxis willing to work later, and urged the radical extension of the rural link bus services. He has written “in the strongest terms” to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Transport Minister Shane Ross and Rural Affairs Minister Michael Ring, urging immediate action. The senator also plans to raise the issue at a special meeting of Fine Gael TDs and senators next Monday ahead of the Dáil returning next week. His call came as Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae urged the Government to supply every household in the country with a breathalyser so drivers can test themselves before taking to the road. “If you have to take children to a football game or if you have to go to work then at least you have access to the exact same facility that the gardaí have to test you,” the Kerry TD told RTÉ’s Claire Byrne on her Monday night programme. The Rural Independent TDs vehemently opposed the most recent toughening of the drinkdriving laws. These were pushed by Mr Ross. The change took effect before Christmas and means first-time drink-driving offenders now face automatic bans. Irish Independent
LEXUS TARGETS ‘BIG THREE’ BUYERS WITH NEW ES
LEXUS is planning to take big numbers of buyers from the German ‘Big Three’ (Audi, BMW and Mercedes) as it reveals detailed pricing and specification levels for the new mid-size luxury ES hybrid saloon. The ES, which replaces the GS, is effectively on sale in Ireland as of now and costs from €49,450.That’s for the ES300h Executive which will be, they say, the biggest seller (60pc of sales). The 300h Luxury level (20pc of sales) costs €55,350 with the 300h F-Sport at €55,850 and the Premium version coming in at €62,390. Prices include government rebate of €1,500.The ES, with its fourth generation 2.5-litre hybrid system, arrives at a critical, and hugely competitive, juncture for cars in the segment. As a hybrid it chimes with moves away from diesel, which has been the pre-dominant driver of cars in this class for some time. The brand is also at pains to point out that its starting price is below that of the ‘Big Three’ - all of whom are at least €1,180 above the €50,000 mark. With the upgraded Lexus Safety System + as standard, the ES hybrid is built on the global GA-K platform, is front-wheel driven and develops 218hp in total. Emissions are from 106g/km (€190 tax) and the boot stretches to 454 litres. There is a new smaller power control unit which is now on the transaxle to save space and weight. And the nickel metal hydride battery is under the rear seats to allow for more boot space. Lack of decent boot room was the major criticism of the GS.The battery is also slotted lower and more centrally to give a better centre of gravity. They are claiming a world first for their special shock absorbers with low velocity valves that can dampen even slight movements. Standard spec includes pre-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic lane keep assist, auto high beam, automatic braking, pedestrian detection (day/night), cyclist detection (day). Entry-level Executive spec also includes 17ins alloys, 8ins display, rear-view camera,10-speaker audio system, 2-zone climate control, Tahara upholstery, premium nav, 7ins TFT information display, LED headlamps, heated/electric front seats (lumbar support), sunroof, rear spoiler, eco/ normal/sport drive modes, front/rear parking sensors. Luxury adds 18ins alloys, smooth leather upholstery, front ventilated seats, rear-cross-traffic auto brake, electrically adjustable steering wheel, rain sensing wipers, wireless charger, partial wood trim. F-Sport adds 19ins alloys, adaptive variable suspension (AVS), F SPORT design touches/specials throughout the vehicle, 8ins information display, triple LED headlamps, front/rear performance dampers. And Premium adds 12.3ins display with DVD, panoramic view monitor with pedestrian alert, semi-aniline leather upholstery, 3-zone climate control. With the shift away from diesel it is hardly surprising to learn that Lexus expect to reap the benefits with hybrid. But they claim the current relief on diesel is keeping businesses, in particular, from switching to the likes of hybrid or petrol. They want it abolished or petrol treated equally. Expect more on that battlefront as petrol hybrids look set to account for 10pc of the total newcar market this year - an estimated 12,000 cars. Indo Motoring 28

IT’S ONLY A JOKE TWO BROTHERS RUNNING A FARM...
One brother walks into the barn and notices his brother dancing in front of the tractor. Quietly he walks closer and peaks around the corner notices his brother slowly taking off his shirt while dancing. He interrupts his dancing brother and asks what is he doing. The dancing brother shockingly and quickly puts his shirt back on and says... I went to the doctors because we’re having marital problems and the doctor told me to do something sexy to a tractor.
A WOMAN AND A MAN ARE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT;
it’s a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, “So you’re a man, that’s interesting. I’m a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days.” The man replied, “I agree with you completely.” “This must be a sign from God!” The woman continued, “And look at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.” Then she hands the bottle to the man, The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cork back in and hands it back to the man. The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?” The woman replies, “No. I think I’ll just wait for the police.”
THE ITALIAN MATH TEST
An Italian man wants a job, but the foreman won’t hire him until he passes a little math test. “Here’s your first question,” the foreman said. “Without using numbers, represent the number 9.” “Without numbers?” the Italian says, “Datsa easy.” and he proceeds to draw three trees. “What’s this?” the boss asks. “Ave you got no brain? Tree and tree and tree makea nine,” says the Italian. “Fair enough,” says the boss. “Here’s your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99.” The Italian stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree. “Ere a you go.” The boss scratches his head and says, “How on earth do you get that to represent 99 ?” “Each of da trees isa dirty now. So, it’s dirty tree, and dirty tree, and dirty tree. Dat is 99.” The boss is getting worried that he’s going to actually have to hire this Italian, so he says, “All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100.” The Italian stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says, “Ere you go. One hundred.” The boss looks at the attempt. “You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!” The Italian leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and says, “A little doga came along and crapa by eacha tree. So now you gota dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, datsa makea one hundred. So, when I’m a gonna start?”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! campaign. They get back to Super League duty on Saturday night when they welcome UCC Demons to the Complex for the second time this season. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BASKETBALL THROWS UP THE JOY AND HEARTBREAK FOR TRALEE SIDES: MOUNTHAWK HEADING FOR ALL IRELAND DECIDER: Tralee basketball fans experienced both sides of sport in the last week. Firstly there was the wonderful clash of Mercy Mounthawk and CBS The Green in the u19 A Boys All Ireland semi-final. The u19A Boys competition is the pinnacle of Schools Basketball. This took place on a Thursday at lunch time in the Sports Complex – a packed complex that was rocking well before tip-off. In the end Mouthawk won 66-62 after extra time but that does not tell the story of the game. Firstly we hear a lot of negative things about teenagers but here you had hundreds of pupils from both schools cheering on their team with great passion and noise and creating a wonderful atmosphere without any hint of anything negative. The game was screened live with Kieran Donaghy doing the commentary for Basketball Ireland and this really showed the sport in a great light to everyone that was tuned in. Credit must go to both head coaches John Dowling for Mounthawk and Rory Rahilly at the Green and their coaches for the level they had their teams. As expected the big players on both sides were outstanding with Daire Kennelly leading Mouthawk and Rapolas Bulvydas leading the Green and both of these Irish Internationals gave it their all. But this was a game where every player on both squads stepped up when called upon. In the end it was Mounthawk who just about out-lasted their opponents with Raul Venchzel deserving special mention for his coolness down the stretch from the free throw line. A delighted John Dowling told The Tralee Advertiser afterwards that he was hugely proud of his squad. “We have a bunch of player who always find a way of getting the job done. We have been behind late on in games before and knew if we were close coming towards the end we would have a great chance. “The Green and their coaches deserve great credit for the way they played the game and we had

dig very deep to get the job done but thankfully we did”. Rory Rahilly, while crestfallen, was as expected gracious in defeat saying, “We gave it everything and my boys left it all out on the court. It could have gone either way but in the end they just got the last couple of decisive baskets. We still have the League to look forward to and I know we can produce that level of performance again”. Mercy Mounthawk will now play Cork’s Gael Cholaiste Mhuire AG in the final which takes place in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght next Tuesday January 22nd with a 12.15 tip-off. They will no doubt bring a huge travelling support and will need to be at their best to defeat a strong Cork side. But they will be ready and hopefully will be bringing the Cup back to Tralee. The Tralee Advertiser will be at the final cheering on the Tralee boys and will bring you all the news on the Friday. In a good week for basketball as the following day at 3.30pm in the u16A Girls final Pobailscoil Inbhear Sceine Kenmare take on Colaiste Einde from Galway. The Kenmare girls are going for an amazing hattrick of wins as they won the C Cup in 2017 and the B Section last year. We wish both sides all the best of luck in the final. GARVEY’S RUE THE ROE SHOW AS THEY GO OUT OF THE CUP: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors travelled to Cork to take on Pyrobel Killester in the Hula Hoops National Cup semi-final. This game was expected to be close and in the end it was but not in the way the people thought before the game. The Dublin side won out 76-70 to qualify for the final in a game that the Warriors had chances to pinch the win but maybe didn’t deserve to on the night. Killester will now face UCD Marian in the decider in two weeks while the Tralee side will have to wait at least another year for a coveted place in the Cup final – something this incarnation of basketball in Tralee craves. Once again Garvey’s were very slow out of the blocks and found it hard going under both boards. From the start Killester’s Irish International Ciaran Roe was having an big effect on the game and he would go on to score a huge 34 points in a display Friday 11th January 2019
that must rank with the best from an Irish player for a long time. Garvey’s were certainly not helped by the fact that both jumper and Evans were carrying knocks into the game that limited their court time and effectiveness. By the end of the first ten minutes Killester led 29-13 with Garvey’s just staying in touch thanks to a big three pointer from Kieran Donaghy and scores from Dick and Quigley. When Keith Jumper hit a huge score at the start of the second quarter the huge travelling support made their voices heard. But soon the lead was out to 21 and the Warriors needed a response. They did this with their best run of the game with scores from Paul Dick, Jordan Evans and Eoin Quigley and the gap was down to 7 points. But two more scores before the end of the half saw the score 43-32 to Killester at the break. Warriors Bogdanovic opened the scoring in the third but with Roe resting Paddy Sullivan came off the bench and hit a quick 5 points and again the gap was 16. Warriors were hanging and with 8 between the sides entering the final quarter the travelling side and their supporters had hope of a big comeback. Led by the excellent Kieran Donaghy the Warrior dug deep and with the gap at 4 points it was game-on. But they hit some three point attempts that did not drop when they probably needed to show some composure and take easier two point options. But from being 9 points down inside the last 5 minutes they cut the gap to a single score. But down the stretch it was the game’s MVP Roe who went to the line and hit four from four to break the Warriors hearts. For the Warriors Paul Dick was the top scorer on 15 with Jordan Evans on 12 and Eoin Quigley with 11 while Killester’s Roe hit 34 points followed by Luis Garcia Hoyos on 13 and Royce Williams on 11. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell said afterwards that the team does not have much time to dwell on the Cup loss. They are back in action this Saturday night. Alan says that “the Warriors will look to dust themselves down and refocus on the fact that they are still in serious contention for League honours with seven home games and four road trips left in the
