SONGS OF LOVE AND PRAISE

The sacred choral works of Aidan O’ Carroll The Friary Church, Killarney, Sunday, November 13th, 8pm Kerry Chamber Choir, Kerry Chamber Orchestra, St. Mary’s Cathedral Choir, Miriam Murphy and Aisling O’ Carroll (Sopranos), Gavan Ring (Baritone), Ermelinda Qejvani (Flautist), Ulla Latimer (Organist). The evening is one of a series of signature events designed to celebrate thhe 35th birthday of Kerry School of Music. A musical first, a truly historic event in the musical life of Kerry will take place in the Friary Church, Killarney on Sunday, November 13th when a concert devoted solely of the sacred choral works of a single living Kerry commposer – Kerry School of Music founder and Director Aidan O’ Carroll – will be given. “I’m not aware that this has ever happened before” says Aidan. The venue has been chosen because the Friary stands on Martyr’s Hill, the site of the martyrdom of Dominican priest Tadhg Moriarty in 16 The first part of the programme consists of settings sacred or liturgical texts which have been composed over many years and are heard with increasing regularity in the Cathedral in Killarney where I am choir master (although the congregation probably has no idea that they’re composed by me) since I took the helm there nearly 4 years ago. World premiere The programme part 2 is the world premiere of a single large work in 5 movements which juxtaposes liturgical, sacred and secular texts. The former are perhaps two of the most important Christian texts, the later are poems entitled The Mother and The Fool by 1916 revolutionary leader Patrick Pearse. In the Stabat Mater we have the mirror imagse of the mother (Mary) standing by the cross as her son is executed and the mother (Pearse’s) reflecting on the deaths of her two executed sons. In the Dies Irae we have a description of the Day of Judgement with Pierse’s self-interrogation - The Fool, - superimposed. This movement and the entire work ends with a conciliatory setting of the Pie Jesu, the final verse of the Dies Irae. The inner movements are settings of I see his blood upon the rose, a mystical poem by Joseph Mary Plunkett, a revolutionary leader, Gol na mBan san Ár (the keening of the women in the slaughter), a purely instrumental movement based on two very different traditional slow airs which are fused together. The Lament for Thomas MacDonagh bythe Irish war poet Francis Ledwidge. The work is neither an apology for incitement to violence nor a glorification of self-sacrifice. The Stabat Mater - all five movements – reflects on an assertion of the primacy of women in the hierarchy of suffering and of the way in which human experience reflects the divine. The concert is being professionally recorded and a modest admission of €15/€10 is being charged to cover professional costs. 4

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE HARRIERS TRAIN THE IMPERIALS ! Tralee Harriers Athletic Club were invited to provide an athletic training session to the Imperials Basketball Academy recently. Tralee Harriers coaches assisted by the Active Leisure Transition Year students from Mercy Mounthawk introduced the young players to our Little Athletics Programme. The training explores the fundamentals of athletic movement in children through games and is designed to improve agility, balance and co-ordination. Good athletic techniques are essential for all sports, and should be part of every training session particularly for young children. We at Tralee Harriers were delighted to introduce our fun athletics programme to Tralee Imperials Academy. We also provide athletic training in primary schools as part of our successful club school link programme and are very open to providing same training to other sports clubs and schools. KERRY TRIATHLETES HEAD TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s been a good year for Tralee Triathlon Club and even better for some its athletes who have been chosen to represent Ireland at the World Championships in 2017. Suzanne O’Sullivan from Farranfore and Ciara Tierney from Tralee will both be representing Ireland at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Championships in Rotterdam next year. Following on from their success this year at national level the two women will now represent their county and country on the international stage. Suzanne had a successful year on the triathlon circuit with wins in her age category in Ennis and Cobh and a second place win in Kinsale and Lough Cutra. Ciara Tierney came second overall in Glin Triathlon and won her age category in Joey Hannon in Limerick. She also won her age group in her local triathlon, Tri Kingdom Come in Tralee, and in Ennis. She took second Photo caption l-r Ciara Tierney, Suzanne O’Sullivan and place in Wexford and Schull. Seamus Hoare Club member, Seamus Hoare, Tralee also has a successful triathlon season in his age category and has been the crowned the over 65 Triathlon Ireland national series champion. He won his age category at home in Tralee and also won in Kilrush, Ennis and Schull and took second place in Cobh putting him centre stage for the World Championships next year as well. Another club member with huge success is Milosz Wojcik who won the European Long Distance Championships earlier this summer in the impressive time of 9 hours 16 minutes for the a 3.8k swim, an 180k bike and a full marathon. His win allowed him to qualify for the the World Championships. Meanwhile, up and coming triathlete, Cillan Tierney, who has previously represented Ireland on an international level, has been nominated for Triathlon Ireland junior triathlete of the year. Triathlon club members are currently invited to vote for the Tralee athlete who has had a very successfull season including second place in the National Super Series. Chairman of Tralee Triathlon Club, John Quilter, says it is wonderful to see local athletes get recognition. “This is a huge success for the county, the club and of course for the athletes themselves. We are delighted that they have reached this high level and we wish them every success.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CAO 2017 IT TRALEE UPCOMING EVENTS

As the CAO application date of February 1st 2017 approaches, the IT Tralee will run a number of events over the coming months to assist students and their families as they consider their college options. On Thursday 10th November, commencing at 7.30pm the Institute will host an information evening for parents of Leaving Certificate students or anyone considering a college application in 2017. Guest speakers on the evening will include Catherine O’Connor, Education Consultant & Author of “Cracking the College Code” who will speak about preparing for a successful transition from second level to third level. Mr. Graham Doyle, Head of Communication & Customer Service at SUSI will explain the student grant system and Dr. Oliver Murphy, President, IT Tralee will present what IT Tralee has to offer as a third level destination. Commenting on the upcoming event Ms Brid Mc Elligott, Vice President - Research, Development and External Engagement at the Institute said “this event is in response to the growing number of queries the Institute receives from parents and family members regarding the move from second level to third level and the opportunities and challenges this presents for the students concerned. Understanding the SUSI system especially for new college entrants is also priority for families and Graham’s presentation will take parents through the application system and answer any queries presented on the evening.” On Friday 11th November the Institute will welcome potential students and their families to its annual Open Day. The ever-popular event will be held from 9.30am to 1.30pm at both the North and South Campuses and will attract over 1,000 potential students from across the county and beyond. Open Day is structured to help potential students to get the most from their visit to IT Tralee with a full schedule of talks, tours and events. Academic departments will host information stands where lecturers and students will be on hand to deal with individual student queries about programmes, facilities and campus life. Representatives from Student Services and Admissions will provide information to students regarding the CAO application process, the costs of going to college, accommodation and adapting to student life. Tailored workshops will also be delivered for students with learning difference and mature students. “Open Day is one of the most important days in the Institute’s calendar of events. It provides potential students with the opportunity to visit the Institute, as well as giving students and their families a chance to meet with lecturers, current students and support staff. New to this years event is the addition of industry representatives at our School’s talks which will help students understand the types and variety of careers available to them after graduating from our programmes”, outlined Ms Mc Elligott. Both events are free of charge and open to the public. To book into either session please call 066 7191704 or visit www.ittralee.ie.

PIETA HOUSE TO HOST MISNEACH REFLECTIVE EVENT IN BALLOONAGH AT the end of this month Pieta House will host “Misneach - Nourishing Hope” in Balloonagh , Tralee as well as Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway. The reflective events are taking place on Sunday 27th November, on the cusp between the months of November (traditionally a month of remembrance, honour and reflection) and December (traditionally a month of hope, joy and celebration) – to create a space and time for people to honour and celebrate lives present and lives passed and to move into December and the Christmas season with hope and celebration. The events are free of charge and people of all ages are welcome to attend. The five venues this year are as follows: • • • • •

St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin (6pm) Pieta House Cork, Highfield Lawn, Bishopstown, Cork (4pm) The Augustine Church in Limerick (4pm), The Augustinian Church in Galway (3.30pm) Pieta House Bereavement Centre, McAuley Centre, Balloonagh in Tralee (4pm).

Pieta House CEO Brian Higgins says it’s symbolic that Misneach will take place in late November, just on the cusp of December. “We chose this date to allow people to move into Christmas with a sense of hope. When people are gathered on the day we want to move from remembrance, honour and reflection into hope, joy and celebration,” he said. “At Pieta House, our values are to treat everyone with respect and dignity, to be rooted in compassion and care, to generate and nourish hope and to empower. We see Misneach as a real way to embody our values at Pieta House” “Misneach - an ancient Irish word - means both ‘hope and courage’ and so we want to create a space for people who have been bereaved by suicide to reflect and celebrate the lives of people they’ve lost; and it’s also for people who can celebrate that they have worked through the issues that had brought them to a point of suicide but who can now move forward in a more hope-filled future” 14

4,745 KERRY SCHOOL CHILDREN TOOK PART IN MATHS EVENTS

4,745 Kerry school children took part in Maths Week Ireland events last week. Maths Week Ireland has reported record numbers for 2016 with over a quarter of a million pupils registered on their website plus an estimated 50,000 people who attended events across the island enjoying the largest festival of maths in the world. Teachers and pupils were very creative and most organised their own events to promote maths within their school. Some of these events included doing maths trails, holding maths fairs, visiting the local supermarket to investigate prices and budgeting and investigating and measuring the height of local structures. The 11th annual Maths Week officially began with Maths in the City at St Stephens Green on 15th October and culminated with a day of Maths in the City Belfast at the Ulster Museum on Saturday 22nd and a maths-themed fun at the Celebration of Mind at Botanic Gardens in Dublin on 23rd October. Mid-week Maths Week events stretched from Dublin to Belfast across to Letterkenny, south to Tralee and east to Waterford with (almost) everywhere in between! One of the main highlights of the week was the presentation of the inaugural Maths Week Ireland Award to Des MacHale, emeritus professor of mathematics at University College Cork in recognition of his longstanding promotion of mathematics in Ireland.

DANNY GETS 2 TIA MARIA HI NOMINATIONS!

Local businessman and fashion style guru Danny Leane has just been nominated for 2 Tia Maria Hi Style Awards . Danny who runs Annburys Boutique in Abbeycourt , Tralee is also an award winning Fashion Stylist and Columnist for Connect Magazine. Recently he was awarded a Special Merit Award at Kerry Fashion Week and this week was nominated for both Hi Stylist of the Year and Hi Most stylish couple along with his wife Anne Leane. To Vote for Danny , simply go to Dannys Facebook page . Best of Luck Danny !

Claire Flynn, Programme Manager of Maths Week said: “More than one million people have engaged with Maths Week over the past eleven years, helping them to have a more positive attitude towards maths. This in turn should have an impact on how the young people of Ireland view maths and promote interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) related careers. The week is a true partnership of people working together for a common aim - a very important aim - to promote mathematics for all.” More information about Maths Week can be found at www.mathsweek.ie, or on Twitter @mathsweek 16

SPOTTED ON THE STREET New Coffee Shop opening in Manor west KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FLU VACCINATION Question I have been told I need to get a flu vaccine. Can I get it for free? Answer Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: • •

• • • • • •

Are aged 65 and over Have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 Are pregnant Live in a nursing home or other long-stay institution Are a carer or a healthcare worker Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs

You can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee.

The Humble Spud

AAaahh - the humble spud... often seen as a side at best , just something you have with dinner but this humble vegetable has a history with us that goes way way back. It can be a dish in its own right whether it is breakfast lunch or dinner , It has a place centre stage so here are two for you to try Don’t forget you can get all my previous recipes at www.traleeculinarygangsters.com and much more

POTATO PIE WITH TOMATO AND FONTINA

It looks, smells, and tastes like pizza, with one delicious difference: The crust is made of mashed potatoes. You’ll have to use a fork to eat this pie, since the slices aren’t sturdy enough to hold in your hand

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

2 1/2 pounds baking potatoes (about 5), peeled and halved 1 28-ounce can tomatoes, drained and chopped fine (about 1 cup) 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 4 tablespoons olive oil Fresh-ground black pepper 3/4 pound grated fontina (about 3 cups) or really good cheddar cheese 3 cloves garlic, minced 5 anchovy fillets, minced 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1/3 cup grated Parmesan

METHOD 1. 2. 3.

Heat the oven to 180°. Put the potatoes in a medium saucepan of salted water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the tomatoes in a strainer set over a medium bowl. Toss with 3/4 teaspoon of the salt and let drain for 20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and push them through a food mill, ricer, or strainer back into the saucepan. Cook over moderately low heat, stirring, until the potato starts to stick to the pan, about 5 minutes. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the oil, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and a pinch of pepper. Remove from the heat. Oil a large baking sheet. Spread the potato mixture onto the baking sheet, forming two 6-by-11-inch rectangles. Top the potato with the fontina, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Sprinkle the garlic and anchovies over the cheese. Top with the drained tomatoes followed by the oregano and Parmesan. Drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Bake the potato pies in the lower third of the oven until the cheese is bubbling and the edges are golden brown, about 25 minutes.

CRISPY BUFFALO POTATOES a fun take on Buffalo chicken wings

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

3 baking potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt Pepper 3 tablespoons butter, melted 2 tablespoons hot sauce Blue cheese dressing, for serving

METHOD 1. 2.

Preheat the oven to 180°. On a baking sheet, toss the potatoes with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes. Flip the potatoes and roast for 15 to 20 minutes longer, until golden and crisp. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the butter and hot sauce and season with salt and pepper. Add the potatoes and toss to coat. Serve with blue cheese dressing.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! This week I’m going to be talking all about the HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training). What it is and what the benefits are. High-intensity interval training is a form of interval training, an exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with lessintense recovery periods. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Usual HIIT sessions may vary from 4–30 minutes. These short, intense workouts provide improved athletic capacity and condition as well as improved glucose metabolism. For example, you could go for a jog for 30 mins, which would be LISS(Low Intensity Steady State) or you could do 20 mins of HIIT sprints eg 30 secs sprints 10 secs rest and you would burn more calories and work harder during that than the jog.

BENEFITS OF HIIT

IT’S QUICK - HIIT is the ideal workout for a busy schedule, whether you want to squeeze in a workout during your lunch break or to get in shape for a fast-approaching event. Research shows you can achieve more progress in a mere 15 minutes of interval training (done three times a week) than jogging on the treadmill for an hour. And according to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, just 2 weeks of high-intensity intervals improves your aerobic capacity as much as 6 to 8 weeks of endurance training. FAT BURNING - Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body’s repair cycle into hyperdrive. That means you burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after a HIIT workout than you do after a steady-pace run. HEALTHY HEART - Most people aren’t used to pushing into the anaerobic zone (that fab place where you can’t breathe and you feel like your heart is trying to jump out of your chest). But in this case, extreme training produces extreme results. NO GYM NO PROBLEM - Running, biking, jump roping, and rowing all work great for HIIT, but you don’t need any equipment to get it done. High knees, fast feet, or anything plyometric like jumping lunges work just as well to get your heart rate up fast. LOSE FAT MAINTAIN MUSCLE - Anyone who has been on a diet knows that it’s hard to not lose muscle mass along with fat. While steady state cardio seems to encourage muscle loss, studies show that both weight training and HIIT workouts allow dieters to preserve their hard-earned muscles while ensuring most of the weight lost comes from fat stores. YAY! INCREASED METABOLISM - In addition to increased fat burning and more muscle preserved, HIIT stimulates production of your human growth hormone by up to 450 percent during the 24 hours after you finish your workout. TORQUING CARS! A PALACE ON WHEELS’, THE ROLLS-ROYCE CRAMMED WITH ARTWORK EXPECTED TO FETCH £700K AT AUCTION

An art-filled Rolls-Royce regarded as a palace on wheels and one of the finest British cars ever made is expected to sell for £700,000 at auction. The Phantom I was commissioned in 1926 by Woolworths’ financial director Clarence Gasque as a surprise gift for his wife, Maude. To ensure she was suitably impressed, Mr Gasque set out on a no-expense-spared project that resulted in the rear seats costing more than the average home. The ten-month project resulted in a car described by experts as being “nothing less than magnificently palatial”. Mr Gasque, a London-based American, bought the chassis and drivetrain from Rolls-Royce for £1,600. He gave it to Wolverhampton coachbuilder Charles Clark of Wolverhampton, headed up at the time by a Mr Barnett, with the demand the car’s design must be French. While struggling for inspiration, Mr Barnett visited London’s Victoria and Albert Museum where he came across a sedan chair which once belonged to Marie Antoinette. This created the spark that saw Barnett commission craftsmen from Aubusson, France, to spend nine months working on a the tapestry for the rear seats, costing £500 at the time. To relax on their chauffeur-driven journeys, Mr and Mrs Gasque could make use of the drinks cabinet. There is a make-up cabinet, lavish interior lights, hideaway seats, a French ormolu clock and satinwood veneer panelling. Other luxurious features included gilt bronze mounts hand cast by Birmingham-based silver manufacturer Elkington. The £6,500 car, known as The Phantom of Love, took ten months to complete - three times the normal period for a Rolls-Royce - and was delivered to the London-based couple in April 1927. The car cost the equivalent of £356,000 in today’s money. During the build period, Mr Gasque told staff at Charles Clarke he did not want to see the car or hear about it - despite it being the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever ordered. The happy couple enjoyed it for 18 months until Mr Gasque died at the age of just 54. The car resurfaced in the USA in 2002 and was then brought back to England, where it has remained ever since. Bonhams has likened the RollsRoyce Phantom I to the throne room in Versaille, describing it “nothing less than magnificently palatial”. The auction house will now sell the “palace on wheels” in London on December 4. It is being offered on this occasion with a guide price of £500,000 to £700,000.

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (Daily Telegraph)

Spokes person

Q I would like a BMW 125i or 328i, due to them being lighter, more agile and thriftier than a six-cylinder M135i or 335i. Which should I consider in terms of practicality? I don’t often have rear passengers but extra room is always nice for carrying a bicycle. DS A The 1-series is much smaller. There’s a better chance of getting a bicycle inside a 3-series with the optional folding rear seats, but clearly not all used models have them. Look at the 328i GT hatchback.

Chill street blues

Q The compressor for the air-conditioning of my Audi RS4 needs replacing. The cost of £900 will be reduced by a payment from Audi, but the labour will cost £2,000. Can that be right? CB A It is incomprehensible that an air-con compressor could cost £2,000 to fit. It may even be only a failure of its electromagnetic clutch, which should be a £150 fix. See an aircon specialist rather than an Audi dealer.

C sore

Q We bought a 2013 Ford C-Max 1.6 TDI in the hope it might be more economical than our previous car. My wife drives 25 miles on fast roads, then four shorter journeys. The best we get is 41.5mpg. Do you think there is a problem? JG A That’s not very good. I averaged 49mpg over 12,000 miles in a slightly larger Mazda5 with the same engine, and 55mpg in a 2008 Focus with the earlier 16v 1.6 TDI. A switch to topquality fuel should improve it by 3-4mpg. This won’t help if the car hasn’t had a service and oil change for some time.

Level head

Q My son has taken his 2001 BMW X5 4.4 automatic off the road for the winter. Should he leave the handbrake on? What else will keep it in good order? JC A Parking brake off. Leave it in P, chock the wheels and overinflate the tyres. The battery will go flat unless it’s connected to a conditioning float charger. Make sure it has a statutory offroad notification (Sorn).

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

O St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I should burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro’the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Savour lodged in thy house.l beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to over come the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary’s and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotions to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR RALLYING IN THE SPOTLIGHT: THE 3 MOST RECENT WINNERS BATTLE IT OUT IN BANNA: Even though we are heading into the winter months thankfully there is no let up on the sporting front! One of the sports that take centre stage in Kerry at this time of the year is rallying. One of the most established rallies with one of the longest running rallies in the sport is the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally. The 2016version, organised by the Kerry Motor Club takes place on November 13th and is the final round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship. It promises to be one of the most competitive in years as the last three winners will take part in what should be a great battle to become a double winner. Last year’s winner Stephen McCarthy will again have local knowledge in the shape of Damien Fleming beside him. They will certainly draw a lot of attention in their newly acquired Ford Fiesta S2000 on the six stage rally. They car’s maiden outing in Wicklow did not go to plan as they retired due to mechanical issues halfway through the event. The 2014 winners were West Cork’s Daniel Cronin with Killarney’s Shane Buckley on the notes. They will come into this event in top form having won the recent Fastnet Rally in Bantry and were also second in last year’s rally so are certainly a pair to watch in their Mitsubishi E9. Daniel might be a native of West Cork but he and the extended Cronin family are regular visitors to Kerry rallies with his brother Keith and uncle Denis having won this end of season event on multiple occasions. 2015 was the year Mick Quinn and Tony Healy had been waiting for as they ended an 18 wait to take the top spot of the podium. They were outstanding in their Ford Escort MK2 on one of the wettest Banna Beech rallies in years. Entries for the event are still open for the biggest day in rallying in North Kerry. HISTORIC’S LAUNCHED: The Rentokil Initial Ireland Historic Stages Rally will be launched at 6pm this Sunday at Scotts Hotel. The only rally in the country dedicated to historic cars will take place on Saturday December 3rd and the organisers are hoping there will be no repeat of last year when the event had to be cancelled due to the weather. The crews will rally over 110km of competitive stages with the much anticipated night stage, the final stage of the rally, the highlight for many competitors and spectators. CRICKET CLUB BOWLED OVER BY NOMINATION: The Kerry Cricket club has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Club of the Year’ award by Cricket Ireland. The Kerry club are one of eight from around the country that have been shortlisted and will go up against Clontarf, Cork County, Ardmore, Fox Lodge, Ballyspallen, Laois

and Roscommon clubs for the national award. The Kerry cricket club has had a very successful year on and off the crease with the opening of their purpose-built Oyster Oval at The Spa in Tralee being a major achievement. On the field the Seniors were runners up in the Munster Premier Division, behind Cork County, and lost out to Cork in the Senior Shield Final. They reached the latter stages of the Munster t20 and the National Cups while the 3rd squad secured the Munster Minor Shield and took top spot in the Munster Second Division. The club of the year will be named at a gala Cricket Ireland Awards Lunch next Friday, November 11th while the club will have its own end of season Awards night early next month. TRI-ING TO BRING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALS BACK TO TRALEE: The Tralee Triathlon is going from strength to strength and is now celebrating with four of its members heading to the World Championships next year. Tralee’s Ciara Tierney, Seamus Hoare, Currow’s Suzanne O’Sullivan and Milosz Wojcik will represent Ireland in Rotterdam in 2017 at the ITU World Triathlon Championships. John Quilter is the Chairperson of the Tralee Triathlon Club and he said that it is great to see local athletes getting national recognition. “This is a huge success for the club and the county and of course for the athletes themselves. We are delighted to see them reaching such a high level and we will all be cheering them on next year”. There was further good news for the club as up and coming triathlete Cillian Tierney has been nominated for the Triathlon Ireland Junior Triathlete of the Year. An Irish international Cillian took second place in the National Super Series and all of the Tralee club will be voting for him. SHUTTLECOCK’S READY FOR START OF BADMINTON SEASON: The Kerry Badminton season, its 80th, gets underway this weekend with the juvenile’s heading to Killarney Sports Complex for annual tournament which gets underway at 11am on Saturday. Players are requested to check in no later than 10.45am. On Sunday it’s the turn of the adults who will be at the same venue for their Knock Out Cup. This is for players in Divisions 3/4/5 and once again a huge crowd is expected. On the national courts it was a weekend to remember for brother and sister James and Niamh O’Flaherty. James got to the Grade C singles final before going down to a Dublin opponent. Niamh reached the semi-finals of the Ladies singles Grade C. Both gave a fantastic display of badminton. The draws for the Ladies and Mens Leagues, once again sponsored by Speedy’s Bar in Moyvane have been sent to the clubs.

NO TRIALS DUE TO WORK ON TRACK: At the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there will be no unrecorded trials this Saturday, November 5th and no qualifying trials on Monday 7th due to essential track maintenance. Qualifying trials will take place next week on Wednesday 9th from 12 noon to 1pm. This Friday highlight is the semi-finals of the An Ghaeltacht GAA A8 525 fundraiser. Entries are now been taken for the Red Mills Open Unraced Bitch stake and the Tarbert GAA Buster A6 525, both of which will now begin next Friday. Entries are also open for the Greyhound and Petworld A2 Current 525 which starts on Friday, November 18th and the Kingdom Derby Open 525 yards which begin’s on Friday, December 2nd.

WARRIORS CLAPPED DOWN BY THUNDER: Irish TV Warriors made their SuperLeague Cup exit when they went down 76-64 away to Swords Thunder in the second leg of clash meaning that they went out 131-125 on aggregate. THE Warriors will look back on the third quarter of their home leg as a turning point. They led by 20 at half time but Thunder roared back into the game and left Tralee only 6 points behind. In Dublin at the weekend Warriors never really fired on all cylinders and in truth needed more than 8 points from Goran Pantovic and 4 from Dusan Bogdanovic. The side battled all the way to the end and indeed closed the gap to 7 points inside the last 4 minutes of the game. But with Pantovic going off injured it disrupted their run just when they had the momentum and the home side pulled away. Coach Mark Bernsen said that turnovers and mistakes cost his side dearly and they never really played the game at the tempo they wanted. But he was happy that they never gave up. “There was no quit and they didn’t run away from the challenge. We made a run at the end but the result is the right one. We didn’t play well and we know we need to do better once we get back to the League. We must remember that these guys are only learning what it is like to play in the SuperLeague – only Donaghy has the experience. It’s a pity to lose in the Cup. This is our first real set back and we need to be tough to get over it. We will see who has the toughness required as we prepare for Saturday night”. Warriors are back home this weekend when they welcome DCU Saints to the Complex with an 8pm tip off. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: St Brendan’s Basketball club were in action on multiple fronts again this week and in the Men’s Division 1 they were defeated 71-47 by St Paul’s. In 16’s Division 3 St Brendan’s saw off St Bridget’s 51-43 while in the 14’s Division 1 the Tralee side defeated KCYMS by the narrowest margins 31-30. The 14’s Division 2 side went

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES down to TK Cougars 22-30 but the Academy defeated the same opponents 12-11. ON SIDE – THE SOCCER CORNER: KERRY GO AWAY IN OSCAR TRAYNOR OPENER: Kerry will be looking to be one of the two qualifiers from Group C of the Oscar Traynor competition but face a tough opener when travel away to Limerick District League this Saturday night (7pm at Jackman Park). The other teams in the Group are Limerick Desmond and West Cork. It does look like it will be a two from three fight as West Cork are expected to be the weakest team in the Group. Kerry got to the final in 2011 and any hope of a repeat of that will depend on the squad managers John Regan and Dan Maunsell call get together. Sadly too many players do not make themselves available for Kerry which weakens the squads prospects but I expect the management to have a good squad on duty on Saturday night. Tralee Dynamos looking for area final: Tralee Dynamos will be looking to progress to the Munster Junior Cup area final as the faced Dingle Bay in mid-week. In the Munster Youths Cup The Park are also in semi-final action as they face Listowel Celtic in Pat Kennedy Park this Saturday at 2pm. Point for the Park: In the games played at the weekend St Brendan’s Park had to settle for a point following a 0-0 draw with Rattoo Rovers. Tralee Celtic were in action twice in Division 1 drawing with Mitchels Avenue 0-0 but going down to Atletico Ardfert. Tralee Bay drew 2-2 with Abhainn Li in Denny Division 2. Unfortunately in the FAI U17’s Cup The Park were knocked out by Avenue United AET. SUPER SEAN’S: In Kerry Schoolboys news there was more good news for Sean McGrath (The Park) and Sean Kennedy (Tralee Dynamos) as both continue training with the Irish u15’s ahead of the squad being named for the trip to Poland. In the Even age National Cup The Park had a very good win against Pike Rovers in the Skechers 12’s but Dynamos went down to the same club. In the League Dynamos put up a good battle in the 12’s JK Sports Premier 3 before going down to Fenit. The Park B drew 2-2 with Mastergeeha in Premier 4. Tralee Dynamos enjoyed a good derby win over neighbours Park B in Foundation Sports 14 Division 1. THE OVAL BALL: Munster Junior Rugby took the first of its breaks at the weekend giving teams the chance to take stock of where they are and what they need to improve on. In J2 Tralee face a daunting game as they welcome table toppers Waterpark to Tralee. The home side are 0 from 4 games and badly need a win. Hopefully home advantage and a big support will see them record their first win. DOUBLE UP FOR HALF THE ODDS: Half the Odds did it again taking the Island Cup at the Castleisland coursing meeting. He was already a winner as he won the Desmond Cup on his maiden outing recently. Ballymac Vale from the Liam Dowling kennels won the Derby Trial Stake. The Big One took the Reserve Oaks while Pumpkin Kia won the All Age Bitch

Stake. Classical Magic won the One Course Duffer with The Three Course Duffer going to Walkinmyshoes. The local stage was won by China Again. ON THE COURSE: At Tralee the DCS Group Festival Fourball was won by John McGrath and Billy Mulcaire. Second was Michael Cahill and Seamus Spencer with Joss Crowley and Dean Hegarty 3rd. In the Ryle Mensware Club singles Liam James O’Donnell took the honours followed by Shane Crowley and Brendan Kenny in third. The 18+ handicap section was won by William Moriarty while Graham Spring took the Best Gross prize. The Semi Open Am Am went to the team of Patrick McElligott, Morgan McElligott, Tomas Dowling and Ian O’Doherty. Second was the foursome of Ger Curtin, Tom Egan, Sean Carmody and Terry Egan. The team that took third was made up of Pat Stack, Pat Williams, Denis Murphy and Kieran Ruttledge. In the Ladies section Mary Savage won the Club Singles competition on 32 points. IN THE SQUARE -THE GAA NEWS: Stacks Stories: Well done to all the young players who took part in the John Lynch Memorial Under 10 Blitz. Teams from Dublin, Cork joined the hosts and fellow Kerry clubs Milltown, Ardfert and Churchill. Big crowds turned out to watch the action and following the Group games and parade the finals began at 1.30pm. The home fans were delighted when the Stacks qualified to meet Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin in the final. The number 1 teams drew so it went down to the number 2 teams on the adjoining pitch. A late goal tipped the balance in favour of the Dublin boys but the Stacks young stars can certainly be very proud of their efforts. St Finbarrs beat fellow Cork side Glanmire in the Shield Final while Churchill defeated Milltown in the Plate final and Ardfert won the Trophy beating Ballinora from Cork. Everyone involved paid tribute to all those involved in organising such a big event with over 40 games taking place on the day. TRALEE PARNELLS NEWS: The AGM of the Tralee Parnells club will take place at 9pm on November 18th at the Kerins O’Rahilly’s Clubhouse. In recent weeks the trophies for the Tralee Parnells Camogie under 12s and under 14s who won the County Under 12 and Under 14 B finals for the first time ever, have been touring local schools to the acclaim of local children. Kerry Camogie has no record of Camogie silverware won by Tralee in the past, so this looks like a fantastic double first for Tralee Parnells Hurling & Camogie Club. We hope to see new faces at winter and spring training, inspired and encouraged by these pioneering players. KERRY CAMOGIE NEWS: Causeway Camogie Club: Well done to the Causeway u13 girls who have won their semifinal replay against Na Piarsaigh. Like the first game it finished 1-1 to 4 points but thankfully Causeway came out on top after extra time. They now play Blackrock/Effin in the final this Saturday. The Cillard Minors lost out in their semi-final of the Limerick Championship going down to Ballyagran/Newtownshandrum. Well done to

all the players and management for all their commitment. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 7,12,13 and 28 with the next jackpot being e2,300 and the draw takes place in Keane’s Bar on Sunday night. Senior Team: The Senior’s play Ardfert in the St Brendan’s Senior Football championship this Saturday November 5th at 2pm throw in. If the pitch is unplayable the game will be moved to Churchill. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The senior’s game in the Senior Town Championship against Ballymac has been refixed for Sunday 13th of November at 2pm in Strand Road. There will be extra time in the event of a draw. Cahill Cup: Charlie Kerins played Skellig Rangers in the final of the Cahill Cup with the West Kerry side running out 1-15 to 1-06 winners. Mark Fitzgerald was Rahillys top scorer on the day hitting 1-02. Stewards Required: The Kerry GAA are looking for stewards for Austin Stack Park. Contact Breda Dyland for information and the GAA will provide full training. Juvenile News: The u10’s were the only Juvenile team in action as they went to Ballymac for a mini blitz. They really enjoyed their day with Glanmire of Cork also attending. Details of the underage Christmas party are on the clubs Facebook page. Lotto: There was no winner of the jackpot from the numbers drawn 3,6,18 and 27 and the next jackpot will be e4,700. NA GAEIL GO DOWN IN REPLAY: Na Gaeil did the town proud despite going down to Glenbeigh/Glencar in the County Junior football final replay. Glenbeigh/ Glencar have been close on a number of occasions and maybe that bit of hurt saw them over the line. CBS THE GREEN INTO MUNSTER FINAL: Well done to CBS The Green u15A side who reached the Munster Final this week when they overcame Rochestown in the semi-final. They will now take on St Brendan’s Killarney in the final on November 16th. ATHLETICS COACHES WORK WITH YOUNG BASKETBALLERS: Basketball has always had good relationships with other sports with the overlap with football by Kieran Donaghy on of the most well-known. This week it was basketball and athletics that came together when Tralee Harriers Athletics club coaches were invited in to take sessions at the Tralee Imperials academy. The coaches were assisted by the Active Leisure Transition Year students from Mercy Mounthawk. The training explored the fundamentals of athletic movement in children through games and are designed to improve agility, balance and coordination.
