LEGAL CORNER

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Scenario Enduring power of attorney

Kathleen has been diagnosed with early onset of dementia. At the moment she has her full mental faculties but in the next 6 to 8 months they will be reduced considerably according to medical opinion she has sought from two consultants. She now wants to know what will happen with her personal and financial affairs and if she can appoint someone to look after them when she becomes incapacitated. An Enduring power of attorney is when you ( the donor) appoint people usually two to look after your affairs in the future if you lack the capacity to make decisions on your own. It also involves appointing notice parties who are aware that the enduring power of attorney exists and may be consulted in relation the donors wishes. Whether or not you have legal capacity in the future will be assessed by your doctor. You can only appoint an enduring power of attorney while you have your full mental faculties and it only comes in to effect when you lose your mental capacity to make decisions. So it is important that Kathleen makes one of these quickly. An EPA may confer general authority on the attorney to act on the donor’s behalf in relation to all or a specified groups of the following matters: where and with whom the Donor should live, whom the Donor should see and not see, what training and rehabilitation the Donor should get, Donor’s diet and dress, inspection of the Donor’s personal papers, housing, social welfare and other benefits. The new Enduring power of Attorney coming in later this year will also allow the attorneys to have an input into healthcare decisions aside from life ending decisions as well as legal and financial decisions. The actions of the attorneys will be overseen by the government appointed Decision Support Service. According to the Alzheimer’s society there were more than 44000 people with onset of dementia in 2009 with the figure set to increase every year unless a cure is found. Therefore it is highly recommended that people appoint attorneys to act on their behalf in case of loss of legal capacity.

EDITORS CLARIFICATION... I wish to make a full clarification in relation to an article that

The Tralee Advertiser ran two weeks ago in relation to the Save Tralee project regarding Tralee Town Centre. I note that there was a little disquiet from a few people in Manor West. For the sake of clarity, the article that I wrote was fair, balanced, informed and proportionate. I merely used Manor Wests Shopping Centre parking regime for illustrative purposes by comparing it to the shortcomings of the town centre. This was done for comparative purposes only. It is a matter of record that I am a frequent visitor and supporter of Manor West Shopping Centre having made many purchases over the years there. It is an excellent facility with top class ancillary services. Chris Shortt

GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER...

Your hair and adding a pop of colour! Colour is an underutilized way of adding a unique style and aesthetic appeal to your hair. Many men will think that when they colour their hair they have to go all out, however, sometimes all it takes is a pop of colour to completely change your image. Highlights - Highlights are a brilliant way to get a brand new look without much risk. Highlights add texture and unique style, so there worth a try if you’re looking for some easy colour. Highlights on dark hair usually work best when they’re brown to dark blonde. If you have a light colour naturally, a light blonde or platinum will work. Just the top - If you want to go for a riskier hair colour and rock something like an undercut, getting one colour on top could be what you need. The total tone difference between the top and sides will instantly draw attention to you. You could go all out and put a pastel blue in or keep it neutral with a blonde. Going grey/silver - This is definitely the biggest hair trend of the year for both men and women. Whether you have black or blonde hair you can make it work. It looks great on those with good length on top as it adds depth to the cut and gives you character. If you do make the jump to grey make sure you mind it. Use the purple shampoos and conditioners and your hair will be 100% on trend.

The Hidden Heroes Awards recognise the achievements of people, young and old, who have made a significant contribution to Irish society, in their community, workplace, family or through sporting excellence. Nominations are now open and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on Monday 5th September. Commenting on Hidden Heroes Joanne said: “I am truly honoured to join some of the amazing heroes from last year to launch this year’s Hidden Heroes campaign for Hidden Hearing. Hidden Heroes celebrates people throughout Ireland who have triumphed over adversity in their lives. I strongly believe that it’s not the disability, it’s the ability of the person, that’s what matters. No Limbs, No Limits is my motto and you can do anything you want if you just believe in yourself. We all face obstacles in our lives, it’s only a matter of overcoming them. Each and every day I live by the motto of what I fail at today I will overcome and conquer tomorrow.” Director of Marketing at Hidden Hearing, Dolores Madden said, “At Hidden Hearing, we are constantly amazed at how people overcome massive obstacles and challenges in their lives to live remarkable lives. Joanne O’Riordan encompasses everything that we celebrate in Hidden Heroes, not letting disability stop her from achieving all her dreams and ambitions. Every year, we hear inspiring stories from friends, family members, patients and coworkers throughout the country who want to recognise others who are overcoming serious challenges to make an impact on their community, in sport, in their family or in the workplace. We are honoured to be in a position to give something back to the community and give these hidden heroes the recognition that they so richly deserve.” The winners of each category will be announced at the Hidden Heroes Awards ceremony in the Doubletree Hilton on Tuesday 5th September 2016. Brian O’Sullivan of O’Sullivan’s Marine, launches Tralee Bay Maritime Centre this week in the former Tralee Bay Sailing School premises in Fenit. Brian plans to fully utilise this fantastic facility and will run it on a private, commercial basis. He has over 36 years’ experience in the maritime sector including the running of O’Sullivan’s Marine boat sales, boat building, boat repairs, engine maintenance, in store and on-line chandlery shop (www.osm.ie) and boat surveying. On a personal level he has a love for all water based activities, especially keelboat racing and is often frustrated that there isn’t easier access to the water in Ireland, an Island nation. He said “I am adamant that water activities and courses for all ages (7+) will be more accessible to everyone. You do not need to be a member of a club or have deep pockets to try a new water-sport or get on the water”. The activities on offer are: Dinghy Sailing (adult & junior), Keel-boat tuition, Kayaking (sea & open top kayaks), Stand-up Paddle Boarding (SUP’ing). Kayaks & SUP’s are available to rent to the public at set times weekly, subject to weather and tides. Safety: Brian and his team take your and your children’s wellbeing very seriously, so whenever you are out on the water, so too are safety boats. There will be designated areas for various activities buoyancy aids can be provided if you don’t have your own. The activities are always supervised and his team will be on hand to assist you.For more information or to get a booking form Website: www.traleebaymaritimecentre.ie | Phone: 087 - 760 6795 | Email: traleebaymc@gmail.com Facebook: Tralee Bay Maritime Centre Photographs: Featured are Brian O’Sullivan and Frances Clifford

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CELTIC SCHOOL’S INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS THANK TRALEE BUSINESS PEOPLE

14 French students from N.E France (Oise/Picardy) spent last week in Tralee (thanks to great flights from Beauvais to Shannon!) on an English & Internship Programme with Celtic School of English. This is the third year for Sandrine from the Chamber of Commerce in Oise to bring a group to Tralee and would like to thank all involved for making it an amazing experience. She was delighted with the warm welcome from Rotary on Tuesday creating links between France and Ireland, proposing a Paris Mini break in Spring 2017 ... watch this space! The students contacted Alison in Celtic School of English to thank the school, the host families and the wonderful companies who took us under their wing! ... this is what they said ... “we spent a wonderful week in the very nice town of Tralee. We would like to thank Alison Boardman from the Celtic School of English who organized everything for us and did everything for things to go well. We would also would like to sincerely thank all shop’s manager who have accepted to receive us. All of them gave us a part of their time. We really appreciated their patience and their willingness to share with us their activity/job. They did everything to integrate us very quickly. Their trust allowed us to be relaxed and to speak English as much as possible. Some of us have checked stock levels, filled the shelves, classified clothes per size, served and helped customers, used the cash register, participate to the creation of a bunch of the flowers for a wedding, welcomed customers, did administration tasks, some marketing & reception work.... Thanks to Caballs Shop who received Maherick, Timothé at the Tralee Chamber Alliance, Anne-Laure at Weardrobe, Thomas at the AquaDome, Cyril at Walsh Bros Electrical, Steven at Ryle’s Menswear, Elodie at Radley’s Office Supplies Shop, Mathilde at Office & Ink, Laurine at Every Occasion Florist, Melissa at Eleanor’s Florist, Malvina and Jeremy at Shaws, Sandrine at Greenview Languages, and Mathiew at Tralee Sports Complex. After one week in our work placement and English lessons and with the warm welcome of our host families, we have seen a huge improvement in our English level. Evenings of Irish music and culture and trip to the Greyhound Stadium and Dingle also helped! We came back to France with a new skills and confidence that will be very helpful for finding a job or continuing our studies!” Many thanks! A bientot! OUR ROSE ELYSHA LAUNCHES FESTIVAL SEARCH FOR ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEERS have been the life-blood of the Rose of Tralee International Festival since 1959 and new recruits are being sought to help co-ordinate and marshal the multitude of events planned for this year’s extended Festival from August 17th – 23rd. The general public would not enjoy the parades, fireworks displays, live music and street entertainment without the presence of an efficient, skilled and dedicated team of volunteers. Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, made it a point to thank the current volunteer panel and encourage new personnel to join a great team of people who work tirelessly to make the Festival a success each year. Volunteers must have enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to help the Festival in its celebrations especially with this year’s exciting program free and affordable events The Event Controller, Bryan Carr, said: “Volunteers are vital to the successful running of this major event. They are the real VIPs who are dedicated to ensuring that the Festival runs smoothly for the enjoyment of all. Anyone who signs-up, for a few days or a few hours throughout the week of the Festival, will get an opportunity to gain first-hand experience working on a large international Festival that has such a rich and celebrated history.” All volunteers must be over 18 and will receive health and safety training before being included in one of the many teams who specialize in crowd control, communications, Customer Service and event management. In addition to being kitted out in a team uniform, the volunteers will have access to meals while on their breaks and a chance to win the Volunteer of the Festival Award. Part-time volunteers will be required to cover a minimum of four 4-hour shifts while full-time volunteers who cover a minimum of eight 4-hour shifts will receive some extra goodies including free tickets to events. Kerry Volunteer Centre, who play a vital role in supporting Volunteers and organisations in Kerry, will also assist in the recruitment process If you would like to be part of the event please contact the Festival office by phone 066 7121322 or download the online volunteering form at www.roseoftralee.ie or email volunteers@roseoftralee.ie 16

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAN SHOWS OFF HIS APARTMENT TO HIS FRIENDS

Hearing this, Johnny promises that he will not say one word about the newborn babies malady. Off they go to the neighbors house to see the new baby. Upon peering into the crib, little Johnny’s eyes get wide and he exclaims. “WOW! What beautiful hair your baby has. She is soooo beautiful.” “Why thank you Johnny.” the new Mother replies. “What a kind thing for you to say.” “And such beautiful blue eyes she has.” Johnny says. “Can she see well out of those beautiful eyes?” “Why yes Johnny.” The proud Mother says. “In fact she has perfect 20/20 vision.” “Well that is great!” says little Johnny “Because if she needed glasses, she’d be in trouble !!”

After a night of drinking a man shows off his new apartment to his friends. In the bedroom they spot a giant gong. What’s that gong for? They ask. That’s not a gong he says, that’s a talking clock. Yeah right, the friends say, show us how it works then. So the man smashes it as hard as he can and takes a step back. His friends are Just staring when suddenly they hear a bang on the wall and a loud voice ..... ‘stop with the noise you dumb ass it’s 3.45 in the morning!’!! A new Supermarket opened near me.....

A NEW SUPERMARKET OPENED NEAR MY HOUSE.

AND SOME JOKES FROM OUR READERS ... THIS WEEK ...ITS FROM MELONIE

It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. And, just before the mister turns on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you approach the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and experience the scent of fresh hay. When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying on the stove. The veggie department features the smell of freshly buttered corn. I don’t buy toilet paper there anymore

LITTLE JOHNNY IS PLAYING IN HIS ROOM..

When his mother comes in and announces that they are going to go next door to see their neighbors newborn baby. Johnny’s mother is well aware that Johnny has a VERY bad habit of saying the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate of times. Couple that with the fact that the baby next door was born without any ears, this prompts Johnny’s mother to sternly warn Johnny that if he utters a single word about the babies missing ears, she will in fact beat him into next week. 18

THE BELL RINGER

A church’s bell ringer passed away. So they posted the position and a man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy wasn’t sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it. They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran toward the bell and hit it with his head. They gave him the job. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two guys were walking past. One asked, “Do you know this guy?” The second guy responded, “No, but his face rings a bell.” The next day, the dead bell ringer’s twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below. The same two guys walk by. The first asks, “Do you know him?” The second guy responds, “No, but he’s a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday.”

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re all having a great week! This week I’m going to be talking all about highlighters and my favourite products to get that glow. Highlighters are having a serious moment in the makeup world. With top makeup artists like Jaclyn Hill and Jeffree Star releasing their own highlighters, you’d be mad not to have at least one in your Makeup Collection. Buuuut, if you’re just discovering the absolute magic and fabulousness that are highlighters and unsure of which to invest your precious euros in then I got you covered!

SLEEK SOLSTICE PALETTE

This highly pigmented highlight palette is gorgeous and recommended by Highlight Queen Jaclyn Hill. It retails at around €14. BARGAIN.

THE BALM COSMETICS MARY LOUMANIZE

Another fab highlighter which is perfect for those with pale skin. Definitely one of my favourites, especially for daytime makeup. It’s 21.50 and you can get it on Debenhams.ie, Cloud10Beauty, BeautyBay.com and lots of places online I’m sure.

BECCA COSMETICS X JACLYN HILL CHAMPAGNE POP

The highlighter of all highlighters, Champagne Pop. If you are looking to up your highlight game, look no further. This highlighter has an amazing buttery formula and goes on the skin flawlessly. It is a tad bit more pricey though, at 40 euro on CultBeauty.co.uk. You can get it in Space NK in Dublin too. It is 100% worth the money, I’m obsessed. It gives a lovely bronzed highlight.

JEFFREE STAR COSMETICS SKIN FROST

I don’t own one of these highlighters, yet, but I couldn’t talk highlighters and not mention these. The Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frosts have gotten rave reviews since being launched(they’re now sold out on Jeffreestarcosmetics.com but will be restocked soon). I need to get my hands on King Tut and Peach Goddess. These highlighters are also HUGE in size, almost double the size of a regular sized compact. These retail at 29 dollars each which is around 26 euros.

MAC GLOBAL GLOW MINERALIZED SKIN FINISH

For all my MAC lovers, the global glow skin finish is definitely one of my favourites. I love a bronzy golden highlight which is exactly what this is. You can get it in any MAC store or on Brownthomas.com for 31.50. I hope you enjoyed this week’s page and are ready to glow like the goddess that you are! Now stop reading and get yourself a highlighter.

Here’s some pictures of some of my recent Beautiful Glowing Clients all with different levels of glow from subtle on Orlaith to Barbara & Clodagh shining bright like diamonds! Also I will be fully qualified from next week on so I am now taking appointments for the week of The Rose of Tralee, The Presentation Debs and any other dates during the Summer. If you’re interested message me on my Facebook page ‘Bexblah’ or email me Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com.

Stay Gorge,

Bexblah. Attention BexBlah Readers!

Bexblah Fitness! Hello my strong friends, I hope you’re all having a great week! If you’ve been following this page for a while, you will have figured out that up until now my ‘fitness journey’ has been very on and off… Until recently. For the past few years I’ve kind of had a pattern, from January-April I would work hard for my birthday, then I would fall off track and kinda be on and off for the Summer and so on and so forth. But not this year. This year at the end of March I decided to take the gym and my nutrition more seriously and I feel I’ve been doing great. At first I did it myself, I used MyFitness Pal and a mixture of gym programmes I got before and used them all April and May. I have lost weight, inches and body fat doing that, and I still went out a few nights and had a cheat meal or 4. But I wanted to up the anti so that I don’t fall back into my regular cycle. I wanted to feel accountable. I wanted to take information and guidance from someone I trust and know will get results. Being in Dublin, there are SO many personal trainers but they all work out of different gyms etc, and my gym is literally a two minute walk away from my house, so I didn’t want to move gyms. So I opted for online personal training from none other than… Rob Lipsett! Again, if you are familiar with this page you have probably seen Rob pop up once of twice. He is Ireland’s top male fitness Youtuber with over 60,000 subscribers. He is an Alphalete and MyProtein athlete. And if you watch his YouTube videos you’ll see he always puts up quality and informative content. So I emailed Rob about his

26

TRALEE ADVERTISER

programmes to see if I would be interested and to see if he would work for me. Long story short, I loved what Rob had to say and felt he got me with regards to feeling like I need to stay accountable so I don’t fall off track. I opted for a 6 week plan which includes… • Macros personalised to me and my goals. • A sample meal plan and guidance on how to swap things around.

Personalised training plan including reps, sets and rest times. • Form instructions. • Continuous support and updates and all the support I need. So many trainers can give you a ‘one size fits all’ or ‘cookie cutter’ plan. But that’s not going to work for you long term, because it’s not personalised to you and your lifestyle. I filled out a huge detailed questionnaire which Rob sent to me and he took that for a few days and got back to me with a plan yesterday. I was so impressed with the huge amount of detail in my plan and

Friday 10th June 2016

how Rob took into account what I already eat/like to eat. I told him that coke zero is my one vice and he sent me back a very very interesting article which basically says… “There is currently no good evidence that diet soda is bad for you (i.e. causes weight gain or health complications). Even the topic of diet soda causing food overconsumption is mixed literature. The worst side-effect of diet soda is potentially poor dental health.” So if you are active, healthy, going to the gym, eating well and all the rest, a coke zero to kill your sugar craving that could potentially lead to you ordering a huge dominos won’t do any harm at all. Just make sure to brush and floss and get regular dental checkups. And that’s science. So yeah, I got a plan off Rob Lipsett, I am super excited about starting it and seeing how my body reacts. But I only started yesterday so I will update you all more next Friday!

IBS is the most common problem associated with the digestive system. It can be a collection of different symptoms and these symptoms can vary from person to person and also present varying extremes of discomfort. Some of the more common symptoms include: Abdominal Discomfort/Pain/Cramps, Constipation/Diarrhoea (One or both), Bloating ,Tummy Rumbling, Heart Burn/ Indigestion, Headaches, Nausea, Gas/Flatulence As well as physical symptoms IBS may also effect a person mentally with emotional symptoms, such as mood swings and anxiety. IBS shows us just how strong the mind-body connection is. Our brain and gut can have a positive or negative effect on each other, sometimes more than we realise for example if you feel anxious or nervous you may feel this in your tummy. If you suffer from IBS this anxiety may trigger the onset of some of the symptoms mentioned such as cramps or constipation/diarrhoea. What triggers symptoms of IBS in a person may also vary; for some the triggers may be dietary while for others it could be emotional, such as stress, anxiety or shock. If it is dietary most people find by avoiding the offending food for a period of time helps to relieve the symptoms and you may be able to introduce it back gradually as your gut heals. Some of the more beneficial supplements to help with digestive issues include: • Digestive Enzymes: These help your digestive system to break down your food before it hits your stomach and can help alleviate symptoms such as bloating, cramping, indigestion and heart burn. • Aloe Vera Gel: Taken twice a day may also help to calm and soothe the digestive system, stomach and bowel • Pro-biotics: Have a huge role to play in maintaining gut and bowel health. Helping to deliver optimal balance of good and bad bacteria, thus improving health and wellbeing. • Symprove: Taken 10minutes before breakfast every morning for 12 weeks Symprove may significantly improve bowel habits, abdominal pain and general IBS symptoms. HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016

BARBEQUE HEAVEN!

Well the BBQ are in full swing with our long summer nights so here are some nice salads to go with your BBQ meat something lighter remeber to check out the blog for lots more ideas and all the past recipes as well www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com

BBQ CHICKEN SALAD

INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tablespoon olive oil 2 boneless, skinless thin-sliced chicken breasts sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 6 cups chopped romaine lettuce 1 vine tomato, diced 3/4 cup canned corn kernels, drained 3/4 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed 1/4 cup diced red onion 1/4 cup shredded peppery cheese 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup Ranch dressing 1/4 cup BBQ sauce 1/4 cup tortilla strips

METHOD • •

Heat olive oil in a medium pan over medium high heat. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper, to taste. Add to pan and cook, flipping once, until cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Let cool before dicing into bite-size pieces. To assemble the salad, place romaine lettuce in a large bowl; top with chicken, tomato, corn, beans, onion and cheeses. Pour Ranch dressing and BBQ sauce on top of the salad and gently toss to combine. Serve immediately, topped with tortilla strips.

GRILLED GARLIC SHRIMP

INGREDIENTS

• • • • •

Peeled raw shrimps / prawns 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic 1 red chili (optional) Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD Peel and chop your garlic, seed the chili and chop, get your frying pan up to temperature and drizzle with olive oil. The shrimps / prawns will take about 5 minutes to cook maximum and the chili should be OK at that too, I just like to take a little care with the garlic so that we don’t burn it. Throw in the shrimps and give them a couple of minutes, now add the garlic and chili, and then give everything another couple of minutes (and a light agitation) until the shrimps are white opaque with pink flecks and that’s it, 15 minutes from start to finish, you don’t get many grilled garlic shrimp recipes easier than that!

TORQUING CARS! HACKERS CRACK INTO MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER HYBRID CAR AND DISABLE ANTI-THEFT ALARM VIA WI-FI

Security researchers have hacked a Mitsubishi Outlander, one of the best-selling hybrid SUVs in the UK. Worryingly the hack enabled the researchers to disable the Outlander’s car alarm, and even do things like drain the battery and turn the car’s lights off and on. Pen Test Partners, the security researchers that carried out the hacking, have explained exactly how the hack was performed on the company website, and it makes for a worrying read. Like many of the best hybrid cars around, the Mitsubishi Outlander has a counterpart app that allows you to check the status of the car and control certain functions. However, rather than GSM, this system uses Wi-Fi, and that connection wasn’t particularly secure.

CRACKING THE OUTLANDER

The website goes on to say that the key to get into this Wi-Fi can be cracked “on a 4 x GPU cracking rig at less than 4 days,” while a much faster crack can be achieved by using the cloud, or buying more graphics processors (GPUs). After that, the next step was to capture the handshake or connection process between the owner’s phone and the car. The researchers realised that most Outlanders would be parked outside their owner’s houses, so by kicking a mobile phone off an owner’s home Wi-Fi connection, the researchers were able to wait for it to find the car instead, and then capture the data exchange. After getting the unique idetifiers of the cars, the researchers were able to imitate an owner’s phone, and control several different functions. First, they were able to turn the lights on and off and use the air conditioning to drain the car’s battery - just like the Nissan Leaf hack, but they were also able to disable the car’s theft alarm.

WHAT HAS MITSUBISHI SAID?

The website says, “Initial attempts by us to disclose privately to Mitsubishi were greeted with disinterest... So, we involved the BBC who helped us get their attention. “Mitsubishi have since been very responsive to us! They are taking the issue very seriously at the highest levels.”

HOW TO FIX IT

The researchers at Pen Test Partners have offered a short-term fix for the vulnerability, but it does mean the app will be useless for the time being. The researchers go on to say as a medium term solution, “new firmware should be deployed urgently to fix this problem properly, so the mobile app can still be used”. After that, the researchers say engineers will need to re-engineer the whole app completely.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TOURNAMENTS ARE TOURNAMENTS – ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE SCALE:

Having been in Dublin this week for Ireland’s last training session before they departed for France I got to thinking about the similarities between the Euro’s and the Kennedy Cup which is underway from next Monday. And there are many while obviously one if for the elite players of Europe and the other is for the elite u14’s from the 32 League’s in the country. From a tournament point of view there will be favourites before it starts and then out of the blue comes a tournament when the underdog becomes the top dog. In the Euro’s think of Denmark and Greece while at the Kennedy Cup Kerry was the underdog last year yet we all remember that amazing day in June when we lifted the Cup. And it’s hard to believe that it is a year ago all ready. And what that win did was to give many more Leagues the belief they can win this year and that the mighty Dublin Leagues – led by the DDSL – are not unbeatable. So it makes the build-up to Monday’s kick off different for many Leagues including our own who are now going in with the belief that we can retain the Cup. And there are similarities between the run into the tournaments. In the time since Ireland qualified and in the last few months in the run up to the Kennedy Cup both managers – Martin O’Neill and Padraig McCannon have had the difficult task of cutting their squads. Martin can take 23 and Padriag 20 so in both camps there were some disappointed players. Once the squads were finalised it was fingers (and toes!!) crossed to see if everyone came through the intervening period without injury. And from a Kerry point of view we had this aspect must easier than Ireland. All the Kerry players stayed injury free which is a big boost going into the tournament. Both teams have had a good build up to the tournament with Kerry getting some very good results in the friendly games while Ireland did well if you take the game at Turner’s Cross out of the equation. Probably the big difference was that while Ireland enjoy the salubrious surroundings of the Fota Resort Kerry trained at Costa Del Christy Leahy Park – both in glorious weather. Ireland will kick off their games on Monday as will Kerry who take on Wicklow at 2.30pm. The kick -off times have been brought forward to all the players at the Kennedy Cup to watch the Ireland versus Sweden game. These games are vital for both sides. On Day two Kerry face Carlow at 10.30am and Donegal at 4pm with the rest of the tournament depending on the outcomes of the Groups. It is very important for Kerry to top the Group to remain as top seeds for the coming years. Should Kerry win their group and Limerick Desmond top Group two the sides will meet in

the quarter finals, a repeat of last season’s epic semi-final which went all the way to sudden death penalties. Next week we will have an update on how the Kennedy Cup went for Kerry and we will also look at how the Euro’s are going for Ireland. Hopefully we will be talking about lots of win for both!! The Kennedy Cup Squad and Management: Padraig Hilliard, Ted Moloney, James Darmody, Emmett Finnan, Ryan O’Grady, Junior Ankomah, Mervin Shalamba, Colin Walsh, Michael Nolan, Gearoid Hassett, Leo Gaxha, Neil O’Shea, Evison Rramani, Sean McGrath, Patrick O’Connor, Evan Looney, Sean Kennedy, Jack O’Connor, Nile McGillicuddy, Eoin Moynihan. The management team are Padraig McCannon, Tom Crowley, Tom Kelly, Tadgh Healy and John Kerley as sports masseuse. KDL U17 MANAGER STEPS DOWN: On Wednesday the Kerry District League announced that Brendan Hogan has stepped down as manager of the u17 Kerry team in the Airtricity League. The League thanked Brendan for ‘the tremendous work he did in getting the squad together, holding the trials and training sessions and getting the team ready for the League campaign”. They statement said the Brendan has decided to concentrate on his considerable commitments with the Schoolboys League and the KDL wishes him well. However as everyone involved in Sports management knows it’s a results driven business and Kerry are pointless from 9 games. The KDL say they are confident that results can be turned around during the second half of the season. They also believe in the ability of the current squad saying “the players have shown great commitment to the cause as well as the pride they place in wearing the Kerry jersey. “The Airticity u17 League is the pathway that Kerry’s young emerging talent needs and the KDL will not be found wanting in their support for the new manager, his management and the players”. If a change was going to be made then this was the time to do it as the League is on a three week break. Their next game is at home to Salthill Devon on June 26th followed by an away trip to Limerick, who they have also drawn in the Cup. The team has put in some good performances without getting the breaks they deserve but also there have been some disappointing ones. What is vital is that we have a Kerry side in the League and going forward in the u19’s. Personally I believe Kerry were at a big disadvantage by not being involved in the short season last season where the teams in the League learned the standards required. Kerry had to come in cold in March and are playing catch up. I know that everyone involved in soccer in Kerry will get behind the new management team and we wish them all the best. KERRY TO LOWER THE BANNER: Kerry begin their journey that will hopefully end in Croke Park in September this Sunday in Killarney. They take on Clare in the Munster Senior Football semi-final in the Fitzgerald Stadium with a 3.30pm throw in. Kerry are back from a training camp in Surrey and despite a few players still on the injury list – James O’Donoghue, Johnny Buckley, Denis Daly and Brendan O’Sullivan – manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice is happy with the players he has available.

Friday 10th June 2016

The Championship has not ignited yet and probably won’t for a few weeks. But the Kerry players and management know that they cannot be complacent. The manager knows this and says that “Clare have a lot of players from two years ago and they have found a few new players, so we are under no illusion that they’re a good side. It’s going to happen sooner or later that there is an upset in the Munster Championship and we have to be at our best to ensure that it is not this Sunday”. Prior to this the Kerry Juniors take on Limerick in their semi-final, which is expected to be a tight affair. Manager Stephen Wallace and his team have been very successful. Stephen was due to step down after his initial two year term but says he was unable to resist when offered another year. The big thing is that they are working with a whole new squad after last year’s All Ireland success. Last year they were able to call on some of the 2014 squad that was beaten in the final but not this year. However they have a talented if youthful squad to pick from and hopefully they can provide the first of a double Kerry win on Sunday.

BUSY TIME AT THE DOGS: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there is a fundraiser for the Austin Stacks GAA club with an all sponsored programme. On Saturday night the fundraiser is for the Castleisland Golf Club with top class spot prizes also on offer. Also on Saturday is the final of the Gain Stakes A3 525 yards plus the semi-finals of the Kilocrim National School A1 550 yards Buster Stake. Entries are also been taken for the Kerry Group Hospital A2 current 525 yards with the first rounds on Friday June 17th. The final will be the centrepiece of the annual Hospital Fundraiser that takes place on Friday, July 8th. BEST WISHES TO THOSE DOING EXAMS FROM ALL CONTRIBUTORS: All the sports clubs that contribute to our column are taking the opportunity to wish all their members, and all others, every good luck for the exams that are on-going at the moment. Like any sporting contest it is important to do your best but also like many sporting competitions there is a back door!! CAMOGIE NEWS: Poc Fada: Kerryhead Mountain in Ballyheigue was the venue for the Kerry Poc Fada Championship and well done to Patrice Diggin who came first and Sara Murphy who was second in the senior category. At u16’s Caoimhe Shanahan was the winner with Sinead Coleman second. The two winners will now go on to represent Kerry in the Munster Poc Fada with the date and venue to be confirmed. Cillard Camogie Club: Thanks to all the supporters who came and gave generously to the club’s coffee morning and to those that

The North Kerry bowlers struggled to control the ball in a stiff breeze, but did have Limerick in some discomfort. But Limerick have a strong batting line-up and pulled away in later stages to post and impressive 257. North Kerry’s catching was much improved with Gary Pickett making two very good catches. Godwin also impressed covering huge ground to stretch one handed to make the catch of the day. Batting wise Prince Thomas was impressive on 62 but North Kerry came up well short on 142. They know they have to improve ahead of their next game at home to UCC.
