Steptoe is wondering about transferring the family home to his son Sid while he is alive and wondering what is entailed in that.

In relation to the family home which is the home that you live in and sweated blood sweat and tears maybe to pay a mortgage and do it up over the years it is often said your home is your castle and not to part with it until one is very definitely in the grave. So, most family homes will be transmitted to the next generation by way of will or intestacy (no will situation). However, there are a number of options available if Steptoe is insistant that he wants to part with his home now despite advice to the contrary.

1. Transfer of the family home into joint names. This is the next best scenario to retaining the family home in the parent’s name until death. It has the advantage that when Steptoe dies that the family home will automatically go to Sid without the need for a Grant of Probate or Grant of Administration. A Grant need not be obtained if the other assets are held in joint names or do not exceed a certain amount if in Steptoe’s sole name e.g. post office, bank, or credit union account. In this scenario consideration should be given to a situation where Sid was to die first, and Steptoe should ideally have a will made to benefit people whom they have mutually agreed would succeed to the house.

2. Transfer of family home to Sid subject to Steptoe’s right to reside in the property. This leaves Steptoe in a vulnerable situation should Sid ever decide for example that Steptoe would be better off in a home rather than at home and was putting him under pressure to do so.

3. A Complete transfer to Sid with no rights to Steptoe- an absolutely bad idea as Steptoe has no rights or power to do anything e.g. if Sid decided to sell the house.

Any transfer of property involves taxes e.g. stamp duty at 1% of the value of what is being transferred. Inheritance tax whereby Sid must pay 33% of value above €335,000 but for most houses it would not be over this amount. Capital Gains Tax but this should not apply where it is Steptoe’s principal private residence.

Many parents are looking at signing over assets when they are younger due to the fair deal scheme which can take up to 22% of the value of a family home where a person is in a home over 3 years or up to 100% of other assets where the stay in the home goes on for a long time. Having said all that, the title to the family home gives older people and parents their power in a situation and they should be absolutely reluctant to part with this power and control before they are well dead and buried. There might be multiple reasons why they might consider signing over other assets e.g. family businesses and properties whereby younger people might be anxious to do them up or rent them out for the benefit of the family but where the home is in question that is one’s personal area which is important to the life health and happiness of the individual and very careful consideration should be given before parting with any of it.

The Government is raking in billions in tax on fuel while consumers are suffering.

That’s according to Independent Republican Candidate in the Tralee LEA, Thomas McEllistrim who says “A whopping €3.9 Billion was taken in by this Government from taxes on fuel last year”.

household and utilities costs”.

“In fact, this is the highest recorded figure for fuel tax intake in the past decade”.

“This is quite incredible at a time when ordinary workers are grappling with ever increasing

The recent hikes for the cost of petrol and diesel by 4 and 3 Cents respectively will have huge knockon ramifications, and remember they are just the first of three planned increases from now until the end of the year”.

“Everybody is going to feel this. It’s bad for commuters, bad for hauliers and anybody engaged in the transport industry, and

ultimately bad for our local economy throughout Tralee and its surrounds, as people will have less cash to spend and will be watching what they spend closer than ever”“It’s truly not fair and I think the Government has to do a quick U turn on this punitive increase”.“It is a tax it can directly control and so should reduce it without delay and give drivers a break”.

Over €270,000 to enhance 11 outdoor recreation projects in Kerry

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, has welcomed the recent allocation of €274,476 in funding to develop and enhance 11 outdoor recreation projects in Kerry, including the Kerry Greenways ,Ballybunion beach access , River Lee walkway in Tralee , The Dingle way and North Kerry Way . The investment, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), will be key to enhancing mountain trails, forest walks, cycleways, rivers, lakes and beaches across the county. It will also provide a boost to the local economy by attracting more visitors to our rural communities. Minister Foley said: “The facilities and amenities that the Government are providing funding for under this scheme are making a real difference in communities right across Kerry. “Today’s announcement will hugely benefit the health and well-being of people of all ages and is so important in terms of attracting visitors to our towns and villages. These amenities are here for us all to enjoy.”

Once again, they have extended the awards to run into 2024 which will see them help local charities, clubs, groups and societies operating in their common bond areas with community-based projects they are involved in.

To date, 43 community groups and charitable organisations have already benefited from the Cara Credit Unions Laurie Healy Community Sponsorship Awards.

Sean Roche, the Chairperson of Cara Credit Union’s Community Sponsorship Committee said ; ”Cara Credit Union is very conscious of it’s ethos. One way of rewarding the trust and loyalty we receive from our members is by supporting projects that can help build better communities and add value throughout our common bond areas in Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway and Corca Dhuibhne. “Our Laurie Healy Community Sponsorship Awards help us achieve this objective with the distribution of funds used to encourage and complement the fantastic work that community groups do to make all our lives and communities a better place to live and work”.

“The sponsorship award pledged €120,000 over a four-year period from 2017-2020 but we are delighted to announce the awards are still going and applications are now open for 2024. He was a Director with Tralee Credit Union for more than 30 years, he served with Chapter 23 for as many years and was as a board member of the Irish League of Credit Unions helping shape the movement in its early days. Discover Kerry from Tralee

The Board of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) held their March meeting at the Hotel, Culinary and Tourism Building in Munster Technological University (MTU). Present at the end of the meeting were members of the board of Tralee Chamber Alliance Mark Sullivan and Martha Farrell along with Anne Looney of MTU. Tralee Chamber Alliance has been a member of KTIF since its inception back in 2018 and is represented on the board by John Edwards of Wild Water Adventures. As Tralee gets ready to host the 7th International Fire Behaviour and Fuel Conference this month, which will be based out of the Rose Hotel and will run alongside the US host Boise in Idaho and Canberra, Australia, Tralee Chamber members are keen to highlight the quality that the county capital has to offer. With amenities such as MTU which was key in Tralee being announced as a location for the World Rally Championship, the town and its surroundings are at the forefront of Irish tourism in the Southwest.

Board member of KTIF and CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Colette O’Connor: “The relationship between KTIF and its members including Tralee Chamber has been

instrumental in the growth and strengthening of Kerry as THE Irish destination for visitors, engagement with industry members has been at the heart of KTIF since the very beginning, I can remember the impact that first workshop held in the Brehon Hotel with Dr. Terry Stephens had back in 2018, the room was full of industry representatives from across the county all there to gain insights and to come together to see what we could do as a collective to drive Kerry as the ultimate destination for visitors both national and international and to be an effective voice for tourism in the county. It is fantastic to now look back and see all that has been achieved in particular KTIF’s contribution to the Discover Kerry Brand project, looking ahead now to the next five years the bar is set high. For the Chamber Network here in Kerry, which works with all business sectors, it’s hugely beneficial to have a designated body that works solely on tourism in tandem with the business groups all of which are members, the value of KTIF cannot be overstated and is something perhaps other counties can learn from.”

“KTIF since its formation has on behalf of its members, championed the tourism sector across the whole county. The benefits of a collective approach to marketing, sustainability, and training as the single entity representing the tourism industry in the county interacting with local and national government bodies and industry agencies have enhanced Kerry’s

reputation as the number one visitor destination in the country. The enhanced discoverkerry.com website and new Kerry brand developed in conjunction with Kerry County Council and Kerry SciTech is an example of how the county can benefit from this cooperative approach.” Pat O’Leary – Chairperson of Kerry Tourism Industry Federation

KERINS O RAHILLYS NOTES

Seniors:

We traveled to Kilcummin on Saturday night for the 2nd round of the county league, with throw-in taking place at 5 pm. Despite missing key players from our previous outing, many of our fringe players stepped up admirably, showcasing their skills and contributing to a competitive match. The second half saw both teams trading blows, with Kilcummin leveling the score by the 10th minute. Despite our efforts to regain the lead, a pivotal moment came when a penalty opportunity was saved by the Kilcummin goalkeeper. Kilcummin capitalized on this momentum, scoring the final three points of the match to secure the victory.

While disappointed with the result, we take away valuable lessons and look ahead to our next match against Legion.

In our opening game of the division 6 league, we faced Kilcummin at Strand Road on Easter Sunday. Despite fielding a younger team, we secured a convincing victory with a 3-goal margin, winning 5-11 to 2-11.

Special thanks to Norman & Elaine Foley and family for their sponsorship, as well as Tralee GC for their support. The organizing committee, led by Antoinette Sayers, deserve recognition for their hard work in making the event a success.
