Lee Strand wish Tim & Sean all the best in the Irish U18 team Lee Strand is delighted to continue supporting Tralee Imperials once again this year with the sponsorship of their U18/20 National Cup jersey. At the launch Lee Strand welcomed two of their key players Tim & Sean PollmanDaamen who were selected for the Irish Under 18 team and will play in Levice, Slovakia in August. Speaking at the launch John Dowling, Tralee Imperials Chairman stated “I would like to thank Lee Strand for their continued support of our club and particularly their recent sponsorship of our Under 18/20 National Cup jerseys. All of the boys are really looking forward to wearing the new jerseys, once we get back on the court this season. Lee Strand’s sponsorship of basketball goes way back to the 70’s when they sponsored

the super league ladies team here in Tralee. With Tralee Warriors now a well established men’s team, work is ongoing within our club to bring a super league ladies team back to the town and it’s only with continued loyal support from businesses like Lee Strand that this might be possible. We are very proud as a club of Sean and Tim’s achievement in making the Irish under 18 team. This is the lads second Irish team having competed two years ago with the Irish under 16 team in Montenegro. The lads will play this year in Slovakia in August. We wish them and the team well, we will be watching online and are looking forward to seeing them back home playing with Tralee Imperials under 20 national cup team next season.”

Pictured at the launch of Tralee Imperial’s new U18/20 National Cup jersey sponsored by Lee Strand are James Sugrue, Technical Manager, Lee Strand, Gearoid Linnane, CEO, Lee Strand, Tim and Sean Pollman-Daamen, Tralee Imperials U18/20 head coach David Leahy and Paul O’Connor U16 head coach.

Midnite Café Pop-up Gigs support Kerry Mental Health Association POPULAR Tralee band Midnite Café dusted off their instruments to perform their first gigs in 16 months in front of excited residents in 4 housing estates in town last weekend .Kerry Mental Health Association’s Tralee Branch benefitted from a collection at each location where the generosity was overwhelming on a glorious afternoon. Miah Lynch Transport sponsored the mobile stage which visited Derrylea in Oakpark, Caheranne Village on Strand Road, Mounthawk Manor and Connolly Park, in that order.

Friday 23th July 2021

The final performance was outside the home of Richie Greer, father of the band’s drummer, Damian. Richie celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday. There were birthday celebrations in Mounthawk Manor as well where John Murphy, originally from St Brendan’s Park, marked his 60th with family. The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said: “An event like this is just what the doctor ordered. It was a tonic for the mind on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It was all about

community spirit and it showed how much we need our friends and neighbours. Credit to the residents’ associations who made it possible, to the band who showed no signs of rustiness after lockdown, and the team of experienced volunteer stewards, led by Martin Brosnan and Ann O’Shea, who made sure the show ran smoothly and safely.” Limited to a maximum of 200 attendees per venue under Covid guidelines, the volunteers with Kerry Mental Health Association’s Tralee Branch were bowled-over by the number of donations they received at each venue.Tralee Garda Station granted the collection permit and assisted on the day. Kingdom Fast Hire kindly sponsored the generator which powered the sound from the stage. The objective of Kerry Mental Health Association is to promote the

Minister Foley announces increased SEN extension for St Mary’s CBS, The Green, Tralee Minister for Education Norma Foley announces the increased provision and significant investment in special education for St Mary’s CBS, The Green, and Tralee. Initially St Mary’s was approved funding under the Additional Accommodation scheme for the provision of a new technology room and preparation area. Today, however, Minister Foley is pleased to announce that the school will also receive funding for a new science lab

and prep area as well as two new SEN classrooms. The funding will also provide SEN interim accommodation for the school while the project is under construction. Minister Foley says: “I welcome the opportunity to increase the provision for special education at St Mary’s CBS. These two SEN classrooms represent a significant investment in special education in Tralee and is in recognition of the excellent work carried out on the ground by staff at St

10 KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!

HELLo everyone! & welcome back to this brand new weekly column, 'Create with Rebecca', a page where I will be talking ALL things social media! (yaaaaaaay!). This column will be especially helpful for those in business looking to navigate the world pf social media for their business. I will be simplifying EVERYTHING as well as giving my top tips. Oh, by the way... I can edit videos, advise you on social media & create a new vibe for your brand! (Aka video editor, social media consultant & graphic designer) - so I know what I'm talking about!

-

DOCUMENT. I feel like a lot of us get lost on social media, we over think what to post, when to post it and how does what we're posting compare to what other brands, businesses and people are posting. The main aim of social media is not to create content based on what we think we should be posting, but actually to document our journey, whether that is as a brand, business or person. Our content should be the day to day documentation of our story. When you are documenting over creating, not only is it easier to think of what content to post, but anyone who engages with that post are directly invested in your story, your journey and how you present that on socials as opposed to a carefully curated post. Think about it, the people, brands and businesses you engage with most online are the ones who are documenting, who are sharing their story through words, images or video. Why? Because you see them as more than what they post, you see them as their journey. Of course pretty pictures and carefully thought out captions are aesthetically pleasing, but people don't connect to an aesthetic, they connect to YOU. Remember that the next time you are trying to think of the perfect post online. So, the next time you are doing something in your day to day life of your business or brand, document it and post that, instead of telling people about what you are doing, SHOW THEM. It's easier for you because with or without documenting it, you would be doing it anyway, and it allows your online audience to feel like they are an insider and therefore, connect more. If you want to discuss with me further on how you can implement documenting into your social media posts, email me at createtralee@gmail.com to book a call!

I hope you are as excited as I am for this new weekly Social Media column! I am excited to help you all become social media savvy and to learn tips and tricks along the way. For more information on what I do or if you are interested in any of my social media service: I offer 1:1 consultation calls, video editing, graphic design and more, you can follow @create.socialmedia on instagram or email me: createtralee@gmail.com to book a call!

OUR PROPERTY PAGE IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOMMY CARMODY’S PROPERTY HOUSE

Tommy’s current market outlook... Welcome all. Right now the weather is Hot and the property market is Hot. If you are considering selling it can be argued that right now is perhaps the best time to do so since 2014 in terms of buyers appetite and the lack of stock. Like the weather the property market could change with little notice. If you are ready to go

live with your home in the next few weeks, great. If you are holding out until later in the year to sell I would still urge you to get your marketing prepared now! Organise your photographs to be taken now while the weather is great - your property is unlikely to look as good as it will now with lawns

mowed, clear blue skies and perfect natural light. Internally you probably have the Spring clean done and summer colours on display. This is ideal for photographs and take a few minutes to declutter as well as depersonalising the home so you appeal to a more varied audience and show the home in its best form. Don’t leave this until September when children are back to school and the madness hits the fan. If you are selling to upsize or downsize be confident that your home is valued accurately so you can rest assured it will sell - within a reasonable timeframe - and you don’t miss out on an alternative home while waiting for your home to sell as more than likely you will need the proceed of your current home to finance your next home.

ATTENTION LANDLORDS We are currently instructed to acquire a home for a Lecturer and his family who is taking up employment in MTU and require a year’s lease at a minimum. The family is in need of a large 3 bedroom or 4 bedroom home. ATTENTION FARMERS If you are aware of any Farm buildings which would be suitable for warehousing or light manufacturing we are instructed by an international client to purchase the same, Market Value will be paid.

Inside David Bowie’s $17m Manhattan apartment It features four bedrooms, four bathrooms, three terraces and a recent past as the New York home of David Bowie – and it could have been yours for a mortgage repayment of just over €50,000 a month. Five years after the singer’s death, and less than a month after going on the market, Bowie’s apartment in the city has sold for $16.8 million, or about €14.2 million. The 470sq m (5,090sq ft) residence is in the SoHo/Nolita area of Manhattan, at 285 Lafayette Street. The singer bought the property for $3.81 million in 1999 and lived there with his wife Iman until his death, in 2016. The sale, handled by Corcoran Group, was the first time the apartment had come on the market since then. The listing describes it as a “grand yet intimate condominium residence with three perfectly situated terraces. The interior was beautifully crafted by one Friday 23th July 2021

of Europe’s most renowned architect/designers. Direct elevator access to the apartment’s entrance gallery leads to a 56 x 22 foot great room with three exposures and a western terrace. Eleven foot ceiling heights, a fireplace, adjacent library (w/ bath), and open kitchen add to the space’s character and function.“The main bedroom suite measures over 1,000 sq ft and features a fireplace, dressing room, oversized bath and terrace. The listing describes the SoHo/Nolita area as an “architectural time capsule from the days when cast iron was all the rage”. In the 1960s artists began converting properties in the area into apartments and studios. “Today, high-end retail and restaurants occupy lower floors in what has become one of Manhattan’s most soughtafter neighbourhoods.

A CHAT ON THE STREET WITH... Annette from Scotia Muse Academy

This week I caught up for a chat with Annette Hennessy who runs the very successful Scotia Muse Academy, located at Moyderwell, Tralee. We met in one of her lovely rooms where each year, every year, Annette with her team of highly qualified teachers, takes students at different levels of education and prepares them in the main, for one of the most important events in their life, the Leaving Cert Exam! Annette, your year has just finished and yet it is beginning again shortly, How so? “Well,we are shortly running our Summer 2 week catch up camp (starting Aug 3rd ) and its very hard to fix something while you’re learning something else. So any gaps a student finds in subjects they were studying in 5th year need to be fixed before they commence the 2nd part of their Leaving Cert program . They will be learning new stuff so need to be in a place to receive that properly otherwise they can’t move on , they can’t progress” says Annette . This 2 week course is designed to identify and fix these gaps and help the student ‘ hit the ground running ‘ so to speak in their Leaving Cert year . We ensure none of the ‘ baggage ‘ of 5th year is carried forward and doesn’t interfere with your LC year . Also as its only 4 weeks to school starting , its an ideally timed course to get the students in the right mindset. And the cost of this course? Well the student can choose

how many subjects they need to concentrate on... if its only one subject , say Maths then its €250 or they can do unlimited subjects (normally 6 or 7) for a flat fee of €1000. So its only €125 for each week to get a particular subject right? “ Yes , says Annette, and we also offer flexible payment options across all our courses. And is this course sold out yet? Well we have a policy of keeping our class numbers low so we can give better one to one attention to our students . Also the educational sector is still restricted in numbers anyway for now . But we have great interest and takeup in this course , still have a few places to be taken up but I expect this to happen in the next week or so “ So are students/ parents already enquiring about the return to school year? “Yes , particularly those who know how many points they need , they want to get their extra tuition classes sorted now ,their ‘grinds’ teachers booked .And we are noticing that this is across all subjects, not just the popular ones, Maths Irish, English. For example , we have enquiries for Ag Science tuition now , that didn’t happen before “ So you have professional teachers for all your subjects here at the Academy? Yes , one of our new additions this year is Anthony Mulreany, originally from Donegal who will be teaching Maths and Applied Maths . Anthony thrives on both the high achievers and the student

that needs a little more one to one to get it over the line . He really expresses our ethos here at Scotia where we don’t let anyone fall through the cracks“ I get the sense that each student is brought along individually, here at the Academy? “Exactly, failure is not an option here at Scotia and we know our students can sense this “ Tell me more about completing your Leaving Cert here at Scotia... Yes this is becoming more popular where can complete the whole LC Curriculum with us. Either a few subjects, without going back to school,or the complete Leaving Cert , as we have the full compliment of teachers. Not everyone learns in the same way so our multidimensional approach of online , inhouse ,private sessions and continuous assessment will certainly achieve optimal results. And our flexibility in that we deliver this LC course outside ‘normal ‘ working hours means it can suit someone who has a part-time or full time employment or even someone who did their Leaving Cert a few years ago and wants to go back again What way, do you think, will next years LC exams be? “We are getting indications from the Dept of Education , Norma Foleys office, that there will be a good possibility of no ‘predicted grades’ in 2022

. So this makes our one to one approach to student learning even more important in the year ahead.” And any other dates for our diary? “Well our Open Days in September are hugely popular , as parents and students alike can come along and ask us all the questions in one go , “says Annette smiling . And they really get a sense of what we are about , not a ‘backroom for grinds to happen’ but a professional focused educational entity where we like to think that every student is our only student “ And the Open Day exact dates, Annette? “I suppose you’ll just have to read all about them in The Tralee Advertiser” she laughs Annette can be contacted at Scotia Muse Academy on 0858277464 / 085-1916701 (see the back page of this issue)

Back To Schools Survey Shows Parents Struggling Financially

68% of Munster parents find covering the cost of back to school a financial burden compared to the national average of 61%. Over a quarter (27%) say they are getting into debt to cover back to school costs. Of those getting into debt, 39% incur a debt of over €500, higher than the national finding of 21%. The findings were revealed in the annual Republic of Ireland school-costs survey commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) When it comes to funding back to school, 65% of Munster parents said they use their monthly income, with 38% relying on their savings. The number of Munster parents taking out a credit union loan is up 8% to 10%, which is twice the national average at 5%, while 3.5% of parents turn to moneylenders, up from 1% last year. This year’s survey also revealed that more parents in Munster (69%) shop online for school

supplies than in any other part of the country. Better deals and saving money were the main reasons cited by respondents. This year’s survey shows the overall spend on school items is up for both primary and secondary schools. The cost of sending a child to primary school this September is coming in just shy of €1,200 at €1,186, up €63 on last year, while parents of secondary school children can expect to pay an average of €1,491, up from €1,467 last year. Significantly, 43% of parents say they will have to deny their children new gym gear, a sharp increase of 16% from 2020. For the second year running, the ILCU survey also looked at the impact and concerns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has had a profound impact on families, with 69% of parents in Munster surveyed reporting that the mental health of their household

has been affected with 51% agreeing that their child’s physical health has suffered. 30% of Munster parents said the cost of buying of extra food for children at home during lockdown had the biggest financial impact on household budget. 27% of Munster parents reported that expenditure on laptops/tablets to support home-schooling has had an impact on their household finances compared that of parents reported that expenditure on laptops/tablets to support home-schooling. Siobhan Donnelly, Chairperson Marketing Committee, Chapter 23, the credit unions of Kerry & West Limerick said, “ We are aware that back to school costs can place huge financial pressure on families. We want to reassure parents in Kerry & West Limerick community that the Credit Union is here to help, for anyone who needs help, be it with budgeting for the back-to-school spend, or taking out a loan to help cover

the costs. We understand that these costs can be financial burden.” Siobhan continued “Our message to our members would be to come and talk to their local credit union. We endeavour to meet parent’s financial needs and are here to lend a helping hand to cover the costs of back to school. As always, we are happy structure repayments in a way that suits individual circumstances. We are more than happy to assist anyone who might need a little extra financial assistance at back to school time.”

George officially opens new disability friendly path at Austin Stacks ground The new disability friendly path at Austin Stacks GAA grounds was officially opened last Saturday. Speaking at the opening, Billy Ryle, Club Chairman, said that just a year ago the 10-day Bracker 100km fundraising walk began in order to raise funds for a path allowing access for all to the far side of the main pitch. He said that he was very grateful to Eamonn Linnane Construction for building the

beautiful path which allows access to the far terrace in Connolly Park for people of all abilities. Billy said that nobody was more deserving of the honour of cutting the ribbon than George Dineen, a lifelong loyal Rock supporter and a valued member of the Club community. While his disability didn’t allow him to play football, he was always a member of the panel. George, he said, is ever

present at Stacks games and his positive outlook and zest for life are infectious. George represents all that is good about Austin Stacks and he inspires those leading the Club to make Connolly Park as accessible as possible to members of all abilities. The new path, Billy said, is a concrete expression of Austin Stacks commitment to equality, accessibility, inclusion and diversity in the Club. Fr

CYSTITIS (UTI’S)

If your immune system has been working extra hard over the past few months to help keep you fighting fit, you can easily end up feeling a little run down. If this is the case, issues such as cystitis may occur. Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI’S) can be a real concern for many, especially women. SOME NATURAL TIPS TO HELP WITH CYSTITIS INCLUDE: 1. drink plenty of water and cut out caffeine...water is extremely important in supporting the health of your urinary tract. Concentrated urine is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, so it is important to keep your urine diluted and flush out any nasties. Caffeine can act as an irritant for your kidneys and urinary tract, so try a coffee alternative such as Barley cup or Chicory cup or some caffeine free herbal teas. You will find these instore. 2. cut down on refined sugar and inflammatory foods.... sugar feeds bad bacteria and together with other proinflammatory foods and drinks such as processed meats, alcohol and caffeine, may increase the risk of UTI’S. Cut down on processed foods as they more often than not contain hidden sugars. 3. increase your fibre and good bacteria.....the health of your bowel has a big impact on the surrounding areas. It is important to achieve a healthy balance of gut bacteria. You may want to consider taking a good quality probiotic

TRALEE ADVERTISER

such as BIOKULT, VIRIDIAN or OPTIBAC, especially if you are prone to recurrent infections. If you diet is lacking in soluble fibre consider taking PSYLLIUM HUSK or SUPER F powder, a teaspoon of either in a glass of water daily can help to keep bowel regular and maintain a healthy gut environment. 4. cranberry to help with prevention.....many of our customer find that taking a cranberry supplement such as OPTIMA CRANBERRY CAPSULES or QUEST CRANBIOTIX can help reduce the frequency and the symptoms of UTI’S . D MANNOSE is also another excellent supplement to help with UTI’S, especially useful for those who get recurrent infections. BIONA PURE CRANBERRY JUICE is also available in store. As always, we are happy to offer advice on these and other products which are available in store. Until next time, stay healthy

A secret service agent, new on the job, shouts “Mickey Mouse!” This startles the would be assassin and he is captured. Later, the secret service agent’s supervisor takes him aside and asks, “What in the hell made you shout ‘Mickey Mouse’?” Blushing, the agent replies, “I got nervous. I meant to shout...... “Donald duck.”

For his last meal he wants a dozen bananas. They hit the switch on the electric chair and nothing happens. They explain that they have to let him go free. He gets his job back at the orchestra and the next performance kills another band member for screwing up. Back to prison and the electric chair. He again requests a dozen bananas for his last meal. When they hit the switch, like before, nothing happens. Before letting him go they ask if it has something to do with the bananas. No, he replies, I’m just a bad conductor.

ANGRY PREACHER A Irish man is stumbling through the woods, a little worse for wear , when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river. He proceeds into the water, subsequently bumping into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon, he asks the man , “Are you ready to find Jesus?” The man shouts, “Yes, I am.” So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water. He pulls him back and asks, “Brother, have you found Jesus?” The man replies, “No, I haven’t found Jesus!” The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him again but for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks, “Have you found Jesus, brother?” The man answers, “No, I haven’t found Jesus!” By this time, the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the man again – but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds, and when he begins kicking his arms and legs about, he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the man , “For the love of God, have you found Jesus?” The man staggers upright, wipes his eyes, coughs up a bit of water, catches his breath, and says to the preacher, “Are you sure this is where he fell in?”

T RQ U I N G CINA R SAND ! KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS! 26 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING KEEP YOUR BUSINESS TRALEE DOES MERCEDES-BENZ’S NEW DIESEL PLUG-IN FIT IN ?

Maybe, just maybe, Mercedes are on to something. The only problem is maybe, given the growing hostility towards diesel, it is too late.Let me explain. Most plug-in hybrids combine a petrol engine, motor and large battery bank (which is replenished from home or public charging points). The perceived shortcoming of such an arrangement is that when the ‘pure electric’ power is consumed – usually around the 40km to 50km mark – and the engine is running in conventional hybrid mode, it can be heavy on petrol. That is due to the simple fact that it devotes extra energy (fuel, in other words) to carry the larger battery that takes the 50km or so electric charge in the first place. There are not too many plug-ins with a diesel-electric combination. Yet, on the face of it, it should make more sense given diesel’s economy in the long haul. But does it?I’ve just been driving a mid-size Mercedes SUV, the GLC, with a diesel plug-in powertrain. I can tell you straight away it never got near the ridiculously optimistic claim by the automaker that this combination consumes as little as 1.8 litres of fuel every 100km. Those sort of figures are obtained under extremely favourable driving conditions. I’ll tell you how much I calculated from my drives on real-world Irish roads in a minute, but first I’d like to let you how I got on with other areas of the car.The GLC has a 9spd automatic transmission, an often overlooked factor for economy, keeping engine revs seriously low on longer journeys. It’s a good-sized vehicle with a nice bit of room, without its physical bulk making it a torment to park in urban tight spots. Throughout our drives we felt really comfortable even in the spates of torrential rain and July sunshines. I proclaimed a few times how smooth the car and engine drove and how easy it was to manoeuvre over some narrow roads and sharply angled bends.I reckon my GLC combination of battery (just one charge) and diesel got me 4.6 litres/100km, which is close to 60mpg. There is nothing extraordinary about it, but when you factor in the lack of charging and the length of the average journey, I’d argue it’s a decent number. I would further contend it outstrips, by some distance, what its petrol counterpart would achieve.I can say that the smaller, less expensive GLA petrol plug-in version did not fare as well on a recent test (though I liked the car itself a lot). I know they are different in price, size and buyer profile but they make my point for me in that having the potential of a diesel plug-in really does cover the bases. The only thing is I fear the expansion of the combination probably goes against the prevailing ‘wisdom’ that no matter what the guise, diesel is frowned upon.Would I buy it? Could I live with it? Yes. I like the idea of an electric for the shorter journeys and diesel for the long ones. But I would have to charge it more often – (Eddie Cunningham -Indo Motoring )

BUYING A USED CAR JUST GOT MUCH EASIER

A new platform that could change the way second-hand cars are sold from forecourts is being rolled out. Some of the country’s top motor dealers have signed up to take part in the new venture. It’s called Autoauction.ie and it will hold monthly live auctions aimed at making the process of buying cars from dealers quicker and easier for buyers and garages.Respected dealers such as Annesley Williams in Dublin, Frank Hogan in Limerick and Finbarr Galvin in Cork are already on board for the first auction. The new platform is being launched by the team behind the successful national property auction site, youbid.ie.As has been widely reported this year, there is a shortage of quality second-hand vehicles on the market and the plan is for the new outlet to be a one-stop shop for buyers and dealers.According to the platform’s managing director, Michael O’Connor, their auction technology makes it “seamless for garages to sell vehicles to private and trade purchasers, with transparency and security throughout the process” In advance of monthly auctions, garages will list their available cars on the site, and buyers can browse the vehicles with the option to carry out a vehicle background check if they feel they want or need to.They can then contact the relevant garages through the platform to arrange viewings of the vehicle.“The benefits to garages are huge – we are exposed to a nationwide audience of motivated buyers who know the cars they want and trust the dealers that are selling them,” says John Fitzgerald, general manager, Frank Hogan Limerick.“Most importantly, the vehicles don’t need to leave our forecourt, so we can use Auto Auction as a platform in conjunction with our other sales methods.”Each vehicle is given a reserve, and if these are not met, dealers will be contacted about potential negotiations.Potential purchasers register with the site in advance, lodging a refundable deposit of €500. They will have 24 hours post-auction to pay the balance of the purchase price. The vehicle must then be collected by close of business three days after the auction.(Indo Motoring ) Friday 23th July 2021

Once again Kerry sports fans will have a big interest in the games with Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley in the rowing and David Kenny in the 20km Walk. There are other connections to Kerry as well with Josie Knight, who grew up in Dingle, on the Great Britain Cycling team and Harry McNulty the rugby 7’s players who two grandmothers are from the county. We have a long and proud Olympic tradition in Kerry stretching back to John Pius Boland at the Athens games in 1896. He later became an MP for South Kerry after winning gold in the tennis. Before we look at the rest of the Kerry Olympians this will be a poignant one for many fans especially those who follow the athletics following the death of Jerry Kiernan. His knowledge of his sport and his straight talking made him an ideal contributor to RTE’s coverage and he will be sadly missed. 1984 in Los Angeles was probably his greatest race coming in 9th in the marathon where John Treacy took silver. Back to our Olympic look back and Boland was followed by Ballyduff’s Edmund Barrett in 1908 in London where he won bronze in wrestling to go with his 1901 All Ireland hurling medal – surely still a unique feat? We can put in a strong claim for Dr Pat O’Callaghan, although Kanturk won’t be too happy!! He medalled in the hammer in Amsterdam in 1928 and Los Angeles in 1932 and was a doctor in St Finians in Killarney for many years. Next up was the legendary Tom O’Riordan who ran the 5000 meters in 1964 in Tokyo so a nice connection there. We have mentioned the late Jerry Kiernan and after his heroics in 1984 Kerry had to wait until 2000 for our next Olympian Gillian O’Sullivan. The race walker was in Sydney in 2000 where she took a great 10th place in the 20km walk. She was a serious medal contender ahead of Athens 2004 but an ill times injury ruled her out. When you see the success of the rowers over the recent Olympiads we saw the strength of this sport in 2004 when Paul Griffin was in the Irish lightweight four that took 6th in the final. Griffin was in Beijing in 2008 along with Sean Casey and Cathal Moynihan who is now a top class cyclist. There is also a strong Kerry connection to swimmer Grainne Murphy through the well know O’Callaghan Family of the Failte Hotel. She qualified for London 2012 –as close to a home Olympics as we will ever have. But she only swam in the heats of the 400m Freestyle before pulling out due to illness. She had a real chance of making the final, if not medalling, in the 800m Freestyle. She was diagnosed Friday 23th July 2021

with glandular fever but can take some comfort from her collection of European medals including a silver in the 1500m in Budapest in 2010. Hopes for the Games: 116 Irish athletes are at the games – the highest since we sent 81 to London in 1948. Along with the 205 other countries taking part there are lots of great Irish stories – the men’s rugby 7’s and the Irish women’s hockey teams, Jack Woolley, our first in taekwondo, a brother and sister competing in boxing and judo – can you imagine the joy and nerves in their homes! Where might the medals come from – rowing, taekwondo, boxing led by Kelly Harrington and Annalise Murphy again in sailing and could our golfers have a week to remember? For Monika and Aileen a final place will be the first objective that they are well capable of achieving and for David Kenny could he follow up on his silver in the European u23’s that he won in July? Maybe too much for a 22 year old but fingers crossed. Firstly let’s hope all the Irish athletes stay healthy and fit ahead of their events and after their competitions finish each of them can say that they could not have done anymore. They have dedicated at least four years of their lives to getting to the Games – and we should be fully behind every one of the 116. FLY THE FLAG: It will be very disappointing if you are reading this on Friday and we don’t see Kerry and Irish flags flying especially by our Council. It is great that there are posters up for the athletes but surely these sports stars deserve the same treatment as when Kerry reaches an All Ireland football final? Indeed hopefully the bunting that goes up now can stay until after the All Ireland final. I am calling on all the Councillors in the Tralee MD area to press the officials to fly the flag for our 2020 Olympians and as many people as possible to also fly the Irish flag in their homes. THE REST OF THE SPORTS NEWS: Firstly we commiserate with the Kerry hurlers, the minor footballers and the u20’s as their competition deciders ended in defeat. Westmeath were probably a slight bit better than the hurlers on the day while they way the minors went down was heart breaking. Having scored a late goal they conceded an even later penalty to lose to Derry by the minimum. Success also eluded the u20’s again as they lost out to Cork. We wish the senior men’s and ladies footballers all the best in their big games against Cork and Donegal. With no backdoor in either competition its winner takes all and fingers crossed for a Green and Gold Double. DE JA VU RALLY COMING TO TRALEE IN 2022: Kerry Motorsport journalist Sean Moriarty broke the news on Tuesday

that the De Ja Vu Rally will be coming to Tralee in 2022. Organisers Plum Tyndall and Beatty Crawford were in town this week meeting with the local organisers with a 130 mile trip planned to coincide with Kerry Motor Club’s 50th Anniversary. The big weekend will be May 27th and 28th with local and national cancer charities to benefit from the rally that will be based in the Rose Hotel. GEORGE CUTS THE RIBBON AS STACKS DISABILITY FRIENDLY PATH OPENED: Everyone in sport knows ‘Young’ George Dineen (to differentiate him from George the elder!) as he attends every game that he can be it soccer, GAA or basketball to name just three. He was given the honour of cutting the ribbon on the Stacks latest development providing access for all. “A lifelong loyal Rock supporter and valued member of the Club community” was how Stacks Chair Billy Royal described Geroge as he cut the ribbon on new disability friendly path that allows everyone access to the Ard Carraig Terrace where the Black and Amber fans gather. As well as the Stacks George is a loyal supporter of St Brendan’s Park, Kerry soccer and GAA teams, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and Liverpool as well as another club or two outside Tralee that I won’t mention!! Funds were raised a year ago at the 10-day Bracker 100km fundraiser and the club thanked Eamonn Linnane Construction for the job they did on the path. STACKS NEWS All the younger age groups were out in force at the weekend and will be hoping that the weather cools down a bit by this Sunday. The u12 Lee Strand County League Phase 2 started with the A’s enjoying a big win over Churchill while the B’s defeated Rahillys. This Sunday teams will be free to cheer on Kerry. The 15 A’s defeated Spa Killarney in the Lee Strand County League semi-final and played Laune Rangers in the final in mid-week while the B’s defeated Dr Crokes and will play their final in St Pats Blennerville also against Laune Rangers. This will take place on July 29TH. The Austin Stacks Camp will take place on August 3rd to the 7th costing e50 per player and e80 per family. PARNELL’S NEWS: The u7’s are delighted with their new set of jerseys from Stephenson Casey Accountants. The u9’s welcomed Crotta for a series of games with each club having three teams. The u13’s played Ballyheigue in the first round of the Division 1 County League and came up just short 3-06 to 3-08. Their opposition had beaten them by 8 points recently but the boys put in a great effort here. The players who took part in the Munster Camogie Blitz really enjoyed their day out and in the scorching weather had a great time in the Ballyhass Waterpark afterwards. The seniors were also out in the heat in the County League Division 1 where they took on Lixnaw. They went down 1-19 to 0-16 points and will now turn their attention to the Championship. The club congratulates all its players who wore the county jersey with pride at all age groups in the past week. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: In the County League Division 1 the seniors had a very good two point win

away to An Ghaeltacht 1-15 to 1-13. They now have a break before they play Beaufort in the final round in two weeks. The B’S defeated Sneem/Derrynane 2-12 to 1-10. There was a great turn-out for the Academy in the sun with Ryan Murphy named as the u5 Boys player of the week. Rachel Lawlor took the accolade for the u6 girls. Donnacha Maunsell and Leo Fitzgerald both took the POW Medals for the u7 boys. All the younger age groups train as normal this weekend – hoping that the heat will not be a great as mid-week. The u12 Girls went down to Castleisland Desmonds in the North Kerry League Plate final while the Blues lost out to John Mitchels. Well done to the clubs players who were part of the u13 Tralee District team that won the District Championship, nThe u16 girls lost out away to Corca Dhuibhne/ Castlegregory. The minor ladies had a good win in Division 4 of the County League defeating Laune Rangers 5-07 to 4-04 in Round 2. Tonight Friday they are away to Fossa. The senior ladies went down away to a very strong Dingle side. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,9, 24 and 31 and the next jackpot will be e9,200 TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB RESULTS: Round 3 of the Tralee Bay World Series took place in warm conditions. The race, sponsored by Waterworld, Rock Street, Tralee saw Eoin Cahill top the time charts in the A Group 12:12:41 ahead of Matt O’Regan, Gavin Quinlivan and Aoife Cahill. Tom Brosnan led the B Group from Frank Ryan, Moma O’Halloran and Caroline Markey. KERRY RUGBY PLAYERS ON MUNSTER 39 PLAYER SQUAD: Munster rugby senior women’s coach has named his extended squad as preparations for the Interprovincials in August and September. He has named a number of Kerry players on the squad –Aine Enright, Muirne Wall, Meabh McElligott who play with the Kerry Ladies Rugby team and UL Bohs Laura O’Mahony and Edel Murphy. ON THE GREENS – PITCH & PUTT Well done to Listowel who have won the Bob Casey Inter-Club Strokeplay trophy for the first time – in the 50th year of the club. Over 100 players from the counties six affiliated clubs took part in the five evenings. There was good news for the Tralee club as they took three of the six spots for the National Matchplay. Jason Cregan, Jason O’Regan and Michael Conway took the first three spots and they will be joined in Ryston Newbridge Kildare in August by Deerpark’s Damien Fleming, Castleisland’s Gavin Carroll and Listowel’s Killian O’Gorman. This weekend sees the first Scratch Cup of the season at the Tralee club. The u16’s from Deerpark, Listowel and Tralee are heading to Glenville in Dublin for the National u16 Boys and Girls Strokeplays Championships.

Dear Val, You have been a caring husband, father and friend, we shall never forget your gentleness and kindness. Seven years ago your generous and loving heart stopped forever. Even though you had a long life full of achievements, love and friendship, to us it still feels that it wasn’t long enough, there was still a lot that you planned to accomplish. It was hard to accept, that you are gone and that we will never see you, hear your voice and hug you, and not a day goes by that we don’t miss you and as we remember you and listen to records of you singing - the magic of your presence is always with us. Your anniversary now is an occasion to celebrate your life as we feel blessed to have had a chance to know and love such a great man. You filled our lives with affection, music, laughter and adventure. All of us and your friends miss your velvet baritone, twinkling eyes and sense of humour. The years without you were often difficult but your unseen support helped us along the way. In our hearts and prayers your memory always stays alive and not a day goes by when we don’t think of you. Love you always, your wife Nadia, children Veronika and Roman and all your friends.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. J.B.
