LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Sean works part-time 10 hours a week. He is wondering what his rights are as a part-time worker. Noonans cleaners by going on strike in 1981 were the trailblazers for part-time workers and resulted in our first part-time workers legislation coming in with limited rights for part-time workers working over 8 hours per week. Subsequently this was replaced by better legislation with The Protection of Employees (Part-time Work) Act, 2001. There is no limit now in relation to number of hours per week worked. This act provides that in brief the part-time employee should not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time employee in respect of his/her conditions of employment. A part-time employee may only be treated in a less favourable manner than a comparable full-time employee where such treatment can be justified on objective grounds. The right not to be treated in a less favourable manner than a comparable full-time employee does not apply in relation to any pension scheme or arrangement where the employee works less than 20% of the full-time employee hours. This does not stop the employer still providing pension arrangements for this type of employee if they so wish. What this means is that all the employment rights legislation applies to a part-time worker equally with a full time worker on a proportionate basis.. In relation to holidays and breaks this would be on a commensurate basis e.g. 8% of time worked for holiday pay. Although employers have no obligation to provide access to part-time work for their employees they are encouraged to do so in the Code of Practice on Access to Part-time Work. An employer should not penalise an employee because they seek their part-time employment rights. Complaints disputes and grievances related to part-time work can be referred to the workplace relations commission within 6 months of the problem occurring. If there are reasonable grounds this time limit can be extended to 12 months. All in all this act is a considerable improvement in helping workers who need to balance family and work life and may only be able to access part-time employment. Law quip: “More and more these days I find myself pondering how to reconcile my net income with my gross habits John Nelson

BEST SLEEPING POSITION “Sleeping is my drug, my bed is my dealer and my alarm clock are the police” It is important to have knowledge of the best sleeping position because how you sleep will effect the quality of your sleep and have a major impact on your overall health. You may develop back and neck pain and other issues such as headaches, impaired circulation and even premature wrinkles because of a poor sleeping posture. You can deal with many issues such as headache, tummy trouble, neck pain, back pain and fatigue simply by changing your sleeping position. Here are some of the most common sleeping positions, some people will only be comfortable sleeping in one position, others choose to sleep in a variety of postures but, which ever position is preferred Chartered Physiotherapists usually recommend to keeping the body mid-line which maintains the natural curves of the spinal structure. With only 8% of people sleeping on their back this is not the most popular sleeping position but, it is certainly the best. Sleeping on your back is the healthiest option because it keeps your head and spine in a neutral position. Lying on your side: Because of many reasons it is possible to call this the most popular sleeping position. Chartered Physiotherapists understand that each individual will vary, but lying on either side can help the structures of your back to adopt an optimal position. To achieve the mid-line position, a pillow placed between bent knees can help support the hips. You can increase or decrease the number of pillows to insure your neck is supported in a neutral spine position. In the fetal position: This is actually a variation of a side sleeping position but, instead of keeping your legs straight you bend them at your

side to obtain this position. It is one of the

position you should still pay attention to

most common sleeping positions which is important to curl on to your side to avoid putting stress on your stomach, liver and lungs but, avoid curling too tight because it can make breathing difficult.

several different things that can improve the quality of your sleep.

Sleeping on your tummy: It may be the best position to help prevent snoring but, it changes the natural curve of your spine resulting in a torsion in your neck because you have to turn your face out to breath properly. To minimise risks to your neck place it as near as possible to the mid-line don’t bend it too far backward, forward or twist it to the one side but, if you must sleep in this position try to sleep with shoulder slightly back or place a pillow under your chest to insure your neck is in the correct position. Note that if your bed is too soft you may put asymmetrical strain on your spine. Please have a look at our best mattress blog for further tips. Even if you think you sleep in the best

Be sure to have a sleep schedule and follow it religiously, you should go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday and try not to deviate too far from the plan at weekends Have a relaxing bedtime routine to signal to your brain that it is time for sleep like reading a book or taking a shower Be sure to avoid using electronic devices at bedtime, avoid lights and screen time can make you feel stressed or over stimulated Be sure to have an active lifestyle – you should exercise on a daily basis, 30mins x5 times a week is recommended by the World Health Organisation and it will help you get a better sleep Get a comfortable mattress – your quality of mattress plays a big roll in the quality of your sleep and if it is not comfortable you will feel tired and may even develop back and neck pain. It is equally important to give consideration to your pillows please have a look at our pillow talk blog for more tips

Whatever your sleeping position remember a good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything!!!

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!

Even though I’m basically in the middle of winter here in Sydney, I hear the weather at home is amaaaaazing (not jealous at all)! So I said this week I would talk about holiday skincare essentials, whether you’re prepping go abroad or basking in the heatwave - I’ve got you covered! When I think holiday skincare or even summer Skincare I think hydration. Hydration is key. Between long haul flights and exposure to more heat, humidity and air conditioning than usual, your skin can become dehydrated and dull very quickly if you don’t look after it. I’m not about that dehydrated life, no thanks. When packing my Skincare for a holiday I make sure to pack items that would not only hydrate my skin, but also protect me from the sun! First things first, flights. I never ever wear makeup when I’m flying. The dry environment paired with a full face of makeup is the perfect storm for a breakout. No thanks. I actually use facemasks on long haul flights. If you don’t want to be totally bare, mascara and a tinted moisturiser is the best way to go. No point being extra and glam on your long haul flight if it’s going to end in you spending your holiday trying to hide a big breakout. Here’s my holiday Skincare essentials:

2.

Clarins After Sun Replenishing Moisture Care for Face and Décolleté - After your skin is exposed to sun, it’s essential to use an after sun to soothe and rehydrate the skin.

1.

Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream For Face SPF 30 - I wouldn’t put anything less than factor 30 on my face. Premature ageing? No thanks. This face suncream both moisturises and prevents sun induced age spots. You can get this in SPF 50+ also, which I only found out. So I will definitely be purchasing that also!

4.

Lancôme Energie De Vie Nuit - This is a night mask full of antioxidants that rehydrates the skin. I use this on all of my flights to ensure my skin stays hydrated and fresh. It’s amazing.

20

5.

Urban Decay Naked One & Done Complexion - This is the closest thing to Foundation I put on my face when on holiday (or if it’s just really sunny in general) it’s sooooo light on the skin and gives it an amazing finish without that “makeup” look.

3.

La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water - this is definitely not necessary, but I absolutely love it. It’s basically water enriched with minerals that you spray on your face to rehydrate and refresh the skin.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week!

Seeing as I’m in winter in Sydney I’m veeeerrrrry into trying to burn as much fat as possible before the hot summer arrives! This week I will be talking about my current favourite fat burning exercises to do at the gym.

1.

2.

Stairmaster What a workout! Within 10 mins I was literally dripping sweat. The benefits of the stairmaster are as follows: Tone and sculpt your entire lower body. Stair climbing engages every major muscle in your lower body: glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. High repetitions are famous for building lean muscle and burning fat which results in toned and sculpted muscles.

Tabata Kettlebell Swings - It really gets the heart rate going! You basically swing the 10-15kg kettlebell as fast as you can with proper form for 20 secs and then rest for 10 secs and repeat 8 times. It’s an amazing fat burning addition to any workout.

4.

Sprints - definitely my favourite as they get the sweat pumping and the heart rate right up! I sprint for 20/30 seconds and rest for 10 and repeat it as much as possible.

3.

Walking Lunges - I have more of a love/hate relationship with these. I hate the thought of doing them but I love it when I’m doing them and can feel it all in my lower body. The benefits include improved balance, symmetrical toning, glute toning, improved core stability and they also boost hip flexibility. So basically they’re a fantastic total body workout!

5.

The Sauna - In my new gym in Sydney there is a sauna in the women’s changing room (v handy) so I’ve been making use of it before and after every gym session. I love the sauna to relax and unwind, also if you’re retaining water weight it’s a great way to sweat it out of you!

The Tomato

(Pomme d’amour, Love Apple, Fruit of Love) Tomatoes... oh lovely tomatoes are in season and I mean real ones that taste of....well tomato. So here are some.lovely ideas to enjoy them. At Croì restaurant they have reappeared on the menu, straight from our poly tunnels

CHILLED TOMATO SOUP

WITH GOAT-MILK YOGURT

INGREDIENTS • 5 pounds yellow or orange tomatoes, cored • 6 medium scallions, coarsely chopped • 1/2 cup parsley leaves, plus a small handful for garnish • 1/2 cup celery or lovage leaves, plus a small handful for garnish • 2 tablespoons tarragon leaves • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • 2 teaspoons honey • 2 cups goat-milk yogurt • 1/2 cup cold water • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • Salt and freshly ground white pepper • Cherry or grape tomatoes, halved, for garnish

METHOD

Step 1 Set a coarse sieve over a bowl. Halve the tomatoes crosswise and squeeze the seeds and juice into the sieve. Let the liquid drain into the bowl and discard the seeds. Step 2 Coarsely chop the tomatoes and transfer to a blender. Add the strained tomato liquid, the scallions, the 1/2 cup each of parsley and celery leaves, the tarragon, lime juice, honey, yogurt and cold water and puree (in batches, if necessary). With the machine on, gradually pour in the olive oil and blend until incorporated. Season the soup with salt and white pepper and refrigerate until chilled. Ladle into small bowls. Garnish with cherry tomatoes and parsley and celery leaves and serve.

Susan embraces the Italian way of teaching On Sunday June 10th , 2018 I had the privilege of travelling to San Miniato , Italy in my capacity as an Early Childhood Care and Education Teacher with Kerry College of Further Education, with a group of 15 likeminded individuals from the four provinces of Ireland ,on the Early Childhood Ireland, Erasmus+ Léargas Study Trip in pursuit of international perspectives on quality within the Early Years Education Sector . Our host Barbara at La Bogetta Di Gepetto afforded us the opportunity to visit three unique Early Years settings for children 0-3 years old. The image of the child as a protagonist of learning and a competent being is at the heart of the San Miniato approach . Vertical grouping of children from babies to 3 years old is the norm . Children are active agents in their learning and the oldest children support the development of the 26

TRALEE ADVERTISER

youngest children in an almost ‘familial’ way . Early Years Educators in Italy must have a minimum qualification of a 3 year Degree to work with children aged 0-3 years. In contrast Educators of the 3-6 years olds Pre-school children are required to have a 5 year degree , this enables the educators to teach children up to age 11 within the Primary School System. Similar to Irish culture , the family is at the heart of our traditions and theirs. The Early Years Education system in San Miniato not only values families , it also embraces and includes families in the activities in the centre. The parents attend workshops and create artefacts for display in the setting , they provide natural materials and resources for use within the setting and are the actors in the end of year dramatization of popular stories within the centres. Children are Friday 22th June 2018

supported to engage in meaningful indoor and outdoor activities , predominantly child led . The use of natural materials within the settings afforded the opportunity of rich open ended activities in which the child led the way both individually and cooperatively . Their unique journey within the service is recorded in individual diaries from the

moment of entry to the service until the child transitions to pre-school at the age of 3 . Interestingly when children enter pre-school at the age 3 , classes are segregated by age , this is different to the vertical grouping within our pre-schools and to our Aistear Curriculum, and perhaps in this regard our way is better .

A GUY STUCK HIS HEAD IN THE BARBERSHOP..

A guy stuck his head in the barbershop and asked “how long until I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around the shop full of customers and said “about two hours.” The guy left. A few days, the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked “ how long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around the shop and said “about 3 hours.” The guy left. A week later , the same guy stuck his head in the door and said “ how long before I can get a haircut.” The barber looked around the shop and said “ about an hour and a half.” The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said “Hey Bob, do me a favor, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long does he have to wait for a haircut but never comes back.” A little while later, Bob returns to the shop, laughing hysterically. The barber asked, “ so , where does he go when he leaves?” Bob looks up , wiped the tears from his eyes and said, “ your house , and I think your wife was home.”

TWO HUNTERS WALKING THROUGH THE FOREST...

As they’re walking they see an anvil, sitting next to a massive hole in the ground with rope tied around it. Curious as to how deep the hole is they push the anvil in and wait for the splash or thud... nothing. Thinking the hole is too deep they start to walk off. Then, out of no where a goat comes zipping past them screaming at the top of its voice and leaps down the hole. Confused they walk on and bump into a farmer... he turns and asks if they’ve seen his goat, they say no, the farmer replies ‘That’s unbelievable I had him tied to an anvil’

HONEYMOONERS

A young couple married, and celebrated their first night together doing what newlyweds do, time and time again, all night long. In the morning, the groom goes into the bathroom but finds no towel when he gets out of the shower. He asks the bride to please bring one from the bedroom. When she gets to the bathroom door, he opens the door, exposing his body for the first time to his bride where she sees all of him well. Her eyes went up and down and at about midway, they stopped. She asked shyly, “What’s that?” pointing to a small part of his anatomy. He, also shy, thought for a minute and said, “Well, that’s what we had so much fun with last night.” She, in amazement, asked, “Is that all we have left?”

TORQUING CARS! ‘THE FASTEST WAY TO A ZERO-EMISSION WORLD’ – HYUNDAI AND AUDI FORM HYDROGEN FUEL CELL PARTNERSHIP

Hyundai and Audi have announced a hydrogen partnership that will see both brands cooperating in the development of automotive fuel cell technology. The multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement includes “a broad range” of components for fuel cell cars (a type of zero-emission vehicle that runs on hydrogen) and will “leverage collective research and development capabilities” in hydrogen propulsion. This announcement comes after Audi renewed its partnership with longstanding fuel cell supplier Ballard Power Systems earlier in June. “The fuel cell is the most systematic form of electric driving and thus a potent asset in our technology portfolio for the emission-free premium mobility of the future,” said Peter Mertens, Board Member for Technical Development at AUDI AG. On our FCEV roadmap, we are joining forces with strong partners such as Hyundai. A 31-YEAR-old Ford Sierra is tipped to sell for a staggering £105,000 - more than five times what it was worth new. The RS500 Cosworth was one of just 500 models made in 1987 and cost around £20,000 new.It has covered just 12,021 miles and is one of the very few RS500s produced in diamond white paintwork, adding to its rarity and appeal among collectors. It has had just three previous owners and remains in completely unrestored condition. The two-door motor comes with an enormous rear spoiler and has a powerful 2ltr, four cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 220bhp. It also has a top speed of 154mph and can do 0-60 in just 6.1 seconds. The saloon car is owned by a Ford enthusiast who recently spent £7,000 on work on it. He has now decided to part with it and has consigned it for sale with Silverstone Auctions of Warwickshire.Despite it’s astronomical price, the Cosworth is some way off the world record price paid for a Sierra, which stands at £182,250 for a car also old at Silverstone in February.

NEW RATING SYSTEM CLARIFIES REALWORLD NOX EMISSIONS

A new rating system to identify real-world nitrogen oxide emissions has been launched by The Real Urban Emissions (TRUE), a partnership which aims to clarify the often confusing data on car exhaust emissions. It employs a simple rating system to highlight the actual emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx). Studies cited by TRUE show a discrepancy between the emission levels recorded during type approval tests, and real-world emissions. Excess NOx emissions have already contributed to poor air quality in many European cities and could negatively impact the public’s health.Developed by the International Council on Clean Transportation, the rating system monitors real-world vehicle pollutant emissions and claims to be virtually impossible to cheat. It uses remote sensing technology and statistical analysis to show the full impact of road transport on air quality. The emissions performance is rated using a simple scale of good (green), moderate (yellow) or poor (red). It provides an easy-to-use tool for identifying the lowest and highest emitting vehicles in the fleet, helping drivers to understand how clean their cars actually are. Ratings have been calculated for approximately 4,850 vehicle models, nearly all designed and built to European emissions standards 3–6. TRUE found that: • Real-world NOx emissions are much higher from diesel cars, even in newer models. Whereas, newer petrol cars, received a “good” or “moderate” rating. • Four manufacturer groups had average emissions more than 12 times above the Euro 6 diesel limit. • The highest-emitting vehicle family has emissions 18 times the limit. • All Euro 6 diesel models rated exceeded the Euro 6 NOX emissions limit measured in real-world driving. • The highest-emitting petrol (Euro 6 vehicle family) has approximately the same NOx emissions as the lowest-emitting diesel vehicle family. • Euro 5 diesel families all had NOx emissions at least twice the limit. The worst had emissions 18 times the limit. 34

YOUR MOTORING QUESTIONS ANSWERED ... I am about to trade in a Toyota Corolla 2009 diesel with a dodgy gearbox. Looking for a 2013 car with good boot space. It has to be diesel because I do a lot of driving. Any suggestions? Aidan and Eddie: (indo motoring ) There is such great value for money in saloons that we think you could capitalise upon. Here’s a round-up of key models:The Avensis 2-litre diesel is a nice choice and it’s something you will be familiar with. Look for a Luna model

if possible. The old model Skoda Superb has aged a bit now but it’s still a fine car with loads of space. The 1.6-litre diesel model was most popular but the 2-litre might suit you better. The Mondeo 2-litre diesel is a good long-distance cruiser and the bigger engine was almost always kitted in Zetec or Titanium trim so you will be treated to nice specification. The Volkswagen Passat is an obviously sensible choice. Again, we prefer the 2-litre for your long distances. Comfortline models were most common

until the new model arrived in 2015. The Peugeot 508 is underrated, especially as an estate. The 508 SW (estate) in Allure trim is lovely. Finally, the Opel Insignia is

finding the going a little tough in the market so you will pick up a nice SC model for decent money.

Suzuki beef up baby SUV Jimny with rugged new looks This is the first official picture of Suzuki’s next tiny-tot SUV, the Jimny. The current

model has been hugely popular. This more rugged offering is expected early next year. Apparently, current owners score the car’s robust, off-road prowess higher than its tarmac-drive ability. The company sees the Jimny’s big selling point as being its resilient nature. It isn’t clear exactly what engines will power the newcomer, but Suzuki is blessed in having an excellent Boosterjet petrol line-up to call on. (INDO MOTORING ) 36

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR A BIT OF NOSTALGIA TO START – DYNAMOS DELIGHT 20 YEARS AGO:

We are starting this week by remembering one of the greatest days in Kerry soccer – the day Tralee Dynamos won the FAI Youths Cup. And despite some close calls they are still the only team to do this. 1998 was the year and this review of those great days is taken from a post by Brian McCarthy on his Facebook page all the way from Australia. I am only taking snippets from Brian’s comprehensive look back so if you get a chance log on and read the whole piece. Brian of course was the coach on the day and is arguably the best coach that has worked in the game in Kerry. From there he went on to work with the Irish national team pioneering video analysis before moving to Australia where he is still involved in the game. Brian says he got involved with the team as he was completing his UEFA ‘A’ course with Dave Staunton who is also still imparting his knowledge to young players with Fenit. Also involved was the late Derry O’Shea – whose son Derek was a keeper on the team and recently refereed the FAI Junior Cup final - and that win is a lasting testament to the work he did with Dynamos. The team trained in the Low Field which Brian calls “the greatest player development centre in the South West of Ireland for 30 years”. The teams trained twice a week and also had video analysis sessions looking back on some of the top teams in the world – certainly innovative thinking for the late 90’s soccer in Kerry. The coaches were probably lucky that they inherited a squad from Gordon Kerins who were young, willing and eager to learn. Brian says they were “sponges” and developed at a rapid pace and soon went to 3 nights a week where the played friendly games defeating some of the top junior clubs in Kerry. When this Dynamos team defeated a very strong Killarney Celtic team they began to believe that something special could be on the cards. The same group was playing at u17 and u18’s and so began an odyssey that took them all around the country.

Following success in the early rounds they went Sligo to take on St John’s who had a huge home crowd at the game. However goals from Padraig McCannon (now working with the Kerry Sports Partnership and still very involved in coaching with Dynamos neighbours The Park) and Jared Browne (journalist and author who wrote a recent book on Eamon Dunphy) saw them set up a quarter final against Drogheda United. They did lose to St Joseph’s Boys on penalties in the Last 16 of the FAI U17 Cup – which even today would be seen as a very good performance by a Kerry side. They also went out of Munster to a Colin Healy led Cork City. Healy would sign for Glasgow Celtic a month later and has enjoyed a great career in the game, On an aside Killarney Celtic many years later become the only Kerry side to win the Munster Youths Cup and only lost out on matching Dynamos FAI Youths win when the narrowly lost out to Cork City in the final. Back to Dynamos and they went 2-0 up away to Drogheda with McCannon again scoring – he would hit the net in all 9 rounds which is an amazing record. Drogheda levelled matters in the second half and the game went to penalties. It was left to Damien Diggins to score the vital penalty to send the Tralee boys into the Last 4. There reward was a home game against Limerick FC who had 4 players playing with their League of Ireland side. McCannon and Diggins got the goals in a 2-1 win in front of a huge crowd at Cahermoneen. The achievement grabbed the attention of more than the soccer public and everyone began to look forward to the final against the legendary Dublin club Stella Maris. To make it even more special the final would take place at the newly developed Mounthawk Park grounds where the likes of John Regan and Christy Leahy did Trojan work to have the venue ready for a national final. I still remember that game as I was not long involved in Kerry soccer and it certainly cemented my love of the game. Dynamos put in a huge effort on and off the field with Brian also crediting Frank Sheridan who had a great knowledge of sports psychology – again ahead of his time. On the day of the game Dynamos continued their routine of preparing away from the match venue and got ready at the Tralee Sports Complex before the bus ride to Mounthawk Park. It is estimated that over 3000 people were there on the day to see how could a Kerry side match up against the Dublin aficionados of the game led by Dessie Baker. The game was refereed by Alan Kelly – the top official in the

Friday 22th June 2018

country back then and who is still at the top of his profession. Dynamos minute attention to detail in the buildup saw them in prefect shape for the final where they led 2-0 at half time thanks to Browne and McCannon. Stella Maris pulled one back late on but it wasn’t enough and Tralee Dynamos became the FAI Youths Cup winners for 1998 – the only club side in Kerry to win a national title despite Kingdom Boys, Killarney Celtic and St Brendan’s Park going close at various ages since that day 20 years ago, In his piece Brian – who has worked with Ireland on 3 World Cup campaigns, 4 Euros and also at Euro 2012 and under 4 managers and 131 matched still rates this win as one of his highlights. As he says they were “the team from ‘nowhere’ that made Kerry a ‘somewhere’ “and we all know where the game in the county has progressed to on and off the field since then. Brian goes through each player in his Facebook piece but all I am going to do is name them. The history making squad reads as a whose-who of Tralee and Kerry soccer: Niall Hobbert, Derek O’Shea. Michael Hogan, Jonathan Burrows, Maurice O’Rahilly, Kieran Moriarty, Roy Lacey, Pa McCarthy, Kevin McCannon, Derek O’Brien, Jared Browne, Padraig McCannon, Neilius Cooney, Eoin Cassidy, Damien Diggins, Shane McMahon, Gary Maher, Alan O’Connor, Fabrice Dowling, Post Script: While I am sure Dynamos will celebrate this win surely this should be recognised at a higher level. Did they ever receive a Civic Reception? If not then I suggest they get one – possible at Mounthawk Park where they won the trophy. And finally known many of the players personally while they love the fact that they are the only ones to win a national club soccer title they would love to see their record being broken – Kerry sides have gone close so now it’s time for one to reach the heights Dynamos did 20 years ago. STAYING WITH SOCCER BUT AT A MUCH SLOWER PACE! One of the fastest growing areas in soccer is one that is aimed at those who might otherwise never kick a ball again. Walking Football is coming to Kerry with St Brendan’s Park being the first club to host this exciting form of physical activity without the running and tackling of a normal game of soccer. Walking Football is especially popular with ‘older’ adults both men and women who love a game of soccer but are a little older than able to play at a competitive level – although

seeing some Walking Soccer games the competitive edge is still there. Walking Football (soccer) will run for 6 weeks at Christy Leahy Park from Monday July 2nd and starts at 7pm. The cost is only e2 per week and numbers are limited to 14 for safety. Come along and enjoy this new combination of fun, exercise and soccer. Booking is necessary through Padraig McCannon, Community Sports Development Officer, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership on 087 6272761 or to Padraig. mccannon@kerrycoco.ie KERRY U12’S GIRLS IN GAYNOR FINALS: Kerry’s u12 Girls will become the first side of that age to take part in the Gaynor Cup finals this Saturday. They are one of four teams that have qualified from the 21 League that entered and will now play two games as part of the 5 day Festival of Women’s Football which starts on Wednesday. Kerry play the MGL (Dublin Metropolitan Girls League) at 1pm with the winners meeting the winners of the Sligo/Leitrim and Galway game for the Gaynor 12’s title. The two defeated teams also play at 6pm for 3rd / 4th places. 13th for Kerry at the Kennedy Cup: Kerry finished 13th in the 2018 Kennedy Cup thanks to a 3-1 win over Inishowen in their final game. The goals came from Eddie McCarthy 2 and Messiah Chirwa. They had beaten Waterford earlier in the day. Kerry’s record in the Kennedy Cup 2018 is 4 wins and 2 losses - one on penalties. BIG DAY IN MOUNTHAWK: The final of the most prestigious Cup in Kerry soccer takes place this Sunday at Mounthawk Park. In the final of the Greyhound Bar Cup – one of the longest running sponsorships - Killarney Celtic take on Killarney Athletic at 2pm. It’s a triple header of finals at Mounthawk Park the Division 1 Final is Replay is on at 4.30 between CG Killarney and QPR. Following this there is a big game for the Park as they look to add another trophy to a successful underage season. They play Rattoo Rovers in the final of the u17’s at 6.30pm. LEAGUE OF IRELAND 17’S BACK IN CUP: Following the break for the exams the Kerry 15’s and 17’s will be back in action in the coming week. Kerry 17’s have drawn Cork City away in Round 2 of the Mark Farran Cup while the 15’s will resume their League campaign at home to Galway. Following the takeover of Galway by Saudi interests I wonder will any of them visit Tralee for this game! TRALEE TAKES THE BOB CASEY WIN: The Bob Casey Memorial Inter-Club Strokeplay Cup will reside in the Tralee Pitch and Putt club for another year. The tournament needed to be decided on cumulative scoring over the four rounds after Tralee, Castleisland and Listowel all tied on 35 points. Tralee’s total of 941 was 17 strokes better than Castleisland who took second ahead of Listowel. They retained the title following this narrow win after more than 70 players from 5 clubs took part in the tournament. Tralee hosts this weekend’s Annual Scratch Cup with the competition serving as a trial for the Kerry Men’s teams.

Bruce McMillan has been named as the Player of the Week at u8’s. They enjoyed their Blitz in Ardfert. Senior B’s: The Senior B are due to take on An Ghaeltacht in the County League Group 4 at 7.30pm. Seniors: The Seniors went down to Annascaul away at Paddy Kennedy Memorial Park in Round 7 of Division 3 of the County League. The home side won 5-08 to 2-13. There will be no game this weekend due to Kerry’s involvement in the Senior Munster final against Cork. Minor Football Championship: The St Brendan’s minor squad have been training hard for the Minor Football Championship and have been grouped with West Kerry and Dr.Crokes in Group 3. They defeated Roscommon Gaels, St Mullins of Galway, Oran from Roscommon and Denn from Cavan. In the semi-final the Kerry girls saw off Edendork St Malachy’s Tyrone and then is a commanding final saw off Na Brideoga of Mayo 1-05 to 0-00. Well done to all the squad and mentors. BALLYMAC NOTES: Ballymac made the long trip to South Kerry to take on Dromid Pearses but it was the home side that took the points in Round 7 of the County League winning 1-14 to 0-12. After a tight first half the sides were level at 7 points apiece and the visitors took the lead in the second half. However the home side rallied and hit 1-03 without reply late on to take the win. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers 8,14, 22 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e5,200. The Academy: Last weekends ‘Come Paly with Me’ encouraging parents to take part in training was a great success. U12: Team 1 were unlucky to go down to Dr Crokes 5-11 to 3-11 while Team 3 defeated the same opposition. Both teams have one game left against Killarney Legion. FINALLY IN FOOTBALL: The road from Tralee and all part of Kerry will be busy on Saturday afternoon when Kerry football fans will be heading to the new Pairc Ui Caoimhe in the hope of bringing home two Munster titles. Before that the Kerry minor girls will have the chance to get the evening off to a good start at they play Cork in CIT. Unfortunately Cork GAA feels that the pitch in the Stadium won’t take three games but hopefully as this game starts at 2pm some Kerry fans can take in all three games. With the minors now at u17’s this is a big test for both teams but Kerry should just have enough to come through. It is probably the same with the seniors. Kerry will start favourites but Cork have been improving of late and of course the loser here will have to go the roundabout way to reach the Super 8’s. Kerry have been training behind closed doors and doing their work away from prying eyes and seem to be heading to the Rebel county with an almost clean bill of health. I understand Kerry are travelling up on Friday night and will have a kick around in the stadium which makes a lot of sense as none of the team have played there before. There is also the question of the pitch as it has given a bit of trouble but seems to have settled down now. That run-out on Friday night will be an important part of the build-up and with that attention to detail I expect Kerry to have at least 4 or 5 points in hand come the final whistle and book their place in the Super 8’s which will certainly provide plenty of talking Friday 22th June 2018

points as the summer progresses. ON THE GREEN: Tralee: In the 18 hole competition the winner was Mike Galvin with Brian Moynihan second and Colm Nagle third. John Gibbons was the winner of the 9 Hole competition. On Sunday the 9 hole winner was Liam Nolan with John Sexton second. Some Dates for the Diary: The Captains Charity Day is on July 7th with the Pat Mulcare Am Am due to take place on July 28th and 29th. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS In the latest round of the County League the Tralee side saw off Rathmore despite conceding a goal in the first minute. It took the seniors seven minutes to get off the mark but they were still behind at the break 1-09 to 2-07 with the Rahillys goal coming from Karl Mullins. A purple period in the second half saw the team scoring 1-08 to 0-03 which set them up for the win. The goal came from Darragh McElligott set up by the excellent Mullins and Rahillys went on to win 2-17 to 2-10. The team has a break this week due to the Munster final but its back to the serious action the following week when they travel to high flying Spa. The B’s went down 1-06 to 2-14 to our neighbours Austin Stacks in the final game in Division 5. The team was short a few regulars and while those on duty tried had the opponents were stronger on the day. The Charlies Kerins side are due to play Duagh tonight Friday night June 22nd when they travel away to Duagh at 7.30pm. The club congratulates Alan O’Sullivan who was the physical trainer with the Kerry u20’s who easily saw off Limerick and will play Waterford in their Munster final tonight Friday night at 7.30pm in Austin Stacks Park. Academy: There was a great turn out at the Academy with Kimberley Horan and Erin Corridan being named at Players of the Week. The u12’s were involved in a cracker against Keel / Castlemaine winning 5-12 to 5-10 but the B’s came up just short against the same opposition. They play their last League games against Ardfert this Sunday. The u14’s begin their Kellihers Central League campaign this week while the 15’s were in the Munster GAA Super Touch 10-A-side (!!) going down to Keel/Listry and Glanmire. The u16’s County League also gets underway this week. In the Girls side of the club the club hosted a North Kerry u10 Blitz which was saw a great day of action for all involved. The u12’s Girls were unlucky to go down away to Glenflesk in their County League Division 2 clash, This was a top of the table clash and the two sides will meet in the League final. The u14’s will play Scartaglin in their County League semi-final this Sunday at 6.30pm in Scart. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 10.15,16 and 32 with the next jackpot being e4,500.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HOME RENOVATION INCENTIVE SCHEME Question My partner and I own our home and want to extend it this year. Would we qualify for a tax credit for the work, and if so, how do we apply? Answer The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme lets homeowners, landlords and local authority tenants claim tax relief on the cost of repairs, renovations or improvement works carried out on their main home or rental property. To qualify for the HRI, you must be paying income tax and be up to date with your Local Property Tax (LPT). The work must be carried out by a contractor who is registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and is taxcompliant. Any repair, renovation or improvement work subject to VAT at 13.5% qualifies for the scheme, so your proposed extension would be covered. Work that is subject to VAT at 23% (such as architect’s fees) is not covered. Neither are items such as furniture, white goods or carpets. The HRI is paid as a tax credit at 13.5% of the cost, effectively reducing the rate of VAT on qualifying work to zero. The qualifying work must cost at least €4,405 before VAT at 13.5% (€5,000 including VAT). The credit can be claimed up to a maximum of €30,000 (before VAT) of the total cost of works. The work must be carried out and paid for before 31 December 2018. However, this can be extended if you need planning permission. If this is the case, planning permission must be in place by 31 December 2018. You will then have until 31 March 2019 to complete the work. To apply for the HRI, your contractor(s) must enter details of the work and payments on the HRI online system on revenue.ie. You should access the system to check that these details have been entered correctly. You claim the credit after the end of the tax year in which you have the work done. In general, the tax credit is applied over the two years following the year in which the work is carried out and paid for.
