LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Guardianship

I am the unmarried father of a four-year-old boy and am not living with the child’s mother as we separated when the child was two years old. I do not have Guardianship of the child but I have heard that there is a new law coming in that may be helpful to me as a father. The new Child and Family Relationship Act 2015 will bring in big changes to the law in this area once it is commenced. Guardianship means a group of rights and duties in relation to the child. Rights to decide with where the child should live, where to seek medical attention and what type, where and how educated, religion and major decisions concerning the child. A Guardian must consent to issuing of the passport. If they refuse to sign passport forms an order can be obtained to dispense with their consent. They would have a say in relation to leaving the country also. It involves duties to provide for the welfare of the child e.g. maintenance and care. At present the non-marital mother is the sole Guardian of the above child. A father may get Guardianship either by agreement with the mother or by applying to court for a Guardianship Order. The agreement can be reflected on a form known as the SI 5 of 1998 which is downloadable from the website www.treoir.ie. The new act brings in automatic guardianship for fathers provided he has cohabited with the mother for a period of twelve months including three consecutive months after the birth. Marital parents are both automatically guardians of their children. Guardianship should not be confused with custody, which is the day-to-day care and control of the child and access, which is contact with the child. Also many unmarried fathers think that because they are simply on the birth certificate that they are Guardians of the child automatically but that is not the case and they need to arrange to get Guardianship by agreement or court order if they want the input referred to above in the child’s life. The court in considering an application for Guardianship by a non-marital father will consider first and foremost the best interests of the child. When the new act comes it will help but it only covers a limited number of non-marital fathers who have the residence qualification before and after the birth of the child. Proving this residence may be difficult as well if all bills and house details are in the mothers name. Law fun: “Hell has no fury like the lawyer of a woman scorned.” If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy - Solicitors and Mediators, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee M:066 7181 596 M: 087 2604753 mirs@gofree.indigo.ie

LOCAL SCHOOLS URGED TO APPLY TO €40M SUMMER WORKS SCHEME

Labour Party TD, Arthur J Spring welcomes the announcement today by his party colleague and Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, T.D.,that €28.5 million has been provided for the payment of a Minor Works grant to primary schools for the current school year and that €80 million has been allocated for a 2016 and 2017 multi-annual Summer Works Scheme for schools. This funding was initially promised as part of the Budget 2016 investment in schools. Deputy Spring states, “I would like to urge Local primary schools to apply to the latest Summer Works Scheme, the application process for which is now open.” Local Labour TD, Arthur J Spring is advising schools to submit their applications over the next two weeks, before the November 27th deadline. A total of €40 million is being made available for the scheme next year. It funds small and medium scale building works such as gas, electrical and mechanical works, roof and window upgrades, and structural improvements. Deputy Spring said: “This is an incredibly important scheme which supports those schools who need to get minor but nonetheless urgent repairs carried out. There is always a certain level of wear and tear that occurs over course of an academic year, and the Summer Works Scheme, led by my colleague Minister Jan O’Sullivan, helps meet those needs. “Each school in Kerry can apply for one small scale project and will be responsible for the completion of those works. A great aspect of the Summer Works scheme is that it causes minimum disruption to pupils as the majority of works will be carried out in the summer months. It also generates local construction work. “I’d encourage local schools to submit their applications as soon as possible before the deadline of November 27th. The process is now fully online and a dedicated helpline has been set up to assist schools who have queries about the process. Schools are also welcome to contact my office where someone would be happy to step them through the process. “In the meantime, I am hopeful this latest Summer Works round will benefit many of our schools in Kerry, as it has done in previous years.

TRALEE LOSES A LITTLE FOCUS IN IBAL LITTER LEAGUE

The latest IBAL Report has been released and, unfortunately, Tralee has slipped down the rankings somewhat from 3rd last August to 17th in January. The final litter survey of 2015 by Irish Business Against Litter shows Killarney to be Cleaner than European Norms, in 6th spot among the 40 towns surveyed, while Tralee is ‘clean’ in 17th. There was a slight fall-off in the number of litter-free towns across Ireland, but no towns were deemed ‘litter blackspots’ and only one was ‘seriously littered’. Out of the 40 towns/cities surveyed, Tralee is “ Clean to European Norms” but previously was “ Clean BEYOND European Norms.” Two seriously littered sites have brought down Tralee’s ranking – the first of these was beside ‘BurgerKing & Subway’ and the car dealership near Clashlehane Roundabout and the second was beside Xtravision at the Rathass Roundabout – clearly both these areas require more attention or they will deteriorate even further. Some of the very good sites included Pairc an Piarsaigh, Manor West Retail Park and Aqua Dome – these sites were not just clear of litter but very freshly presented and maintained. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “The onus is on business people in Tralee – whether they are members of Tralee Chamber Alliance or not – and the people of Tralee and visitors to Tralee to keep the town tidy. If you see litter, please don’t walk past it. Just put it in the bin.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: SMACKING CHILDREN Question

27 — 30 JANUARY 8.00 PM

LES MISERABLES - SCHOOL EDITION

Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk TICKETS €15/12

I heard that smacking a child is now illegal. What exactly are the rules? Answer The Children First Act 2015 provides for a number of key child protection measures. Changes aimed at banning corporal punishment or use of force against children came into effect on 11 December 2015. Since that date, a person who physically punishes a child can no longer rely on the defence of “reasonable chastisement” in the courts.

04 FEBRUARY 8.00 PM

THE ARAN ISLANDS

by J M Synge, adapted for the stage by Joe O’Byrne TICKETS €16/13

Before this change, parents or others acting in loco parentis could use physical force to punish their children, even though a law allowing parents to use force against their children was repealed in 2001. They could do this by relying on the common law defence of “reasonable chastisement”. This meant that a person who hit or smacked a child could argue that they did so to discipline the child. This was a defence to what would otherwise be an assault on the child. This defence can no longer be used in the courts. No new offence has been created and there are no laws that directly ban the smacking of children. However the withdrawal of the “reasonable chastisement” defence means that an effective ban is in place.

New hair-care Routine 2016 New year, new you.

Start of your change of self this new year with one vital and easy step- your hair.

Starting a basic routine: 1. Choose your shampoo and conditioner wisely. They’re not all created alike so choose products that work well for you. Go for sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner. For dry hair prone to getting frizzy look for moisturising or hydrating products that contain oils, butters and other nourishing products. For oily or fine hair, look for products containing tea tree and chamomile. For hair that breaks easily, look for products containing collagen and keratin. 2. Wash your hair two or three times weekly. Washing your hair too much strips the hair of natural oils which we need to keep it alive and healthy. If your hair gets greasy fast, consider doing a water only wash on days when you don’t shampoo as water will cleanse your hair without drying it out. When you start washing less your hair will keep overproducing oil for a week or so until things balance out. Just be patient and soon your hair will stay clean longer. 3. Use warm or cool water instead of hot. Hot showers dry the hair out. If you have a steaming hot shower finish it off with a cool rinse so your hair will look healthy and shiny. 4. Spot dry your hair instead of towelling it roughly. Hair is weak when it’s wet. Doing a rough towel dry treatment can break your hair. Instead use a towel to dab your hair dry and get rid of excess water, then let it finish air drying. In our next slot we will give you more ways to a healthier hair routine.

Harissa-Spiced Cassoulet PREPARATION: In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, cook the bacon over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until the fat is rendered. Add the onion, celery and diced carrots and cook, stirring occasionally, until beginning
to soften, about 8 minutes. Add the beans, cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to moderately low and simmer the beans until al dente, about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, add a generous pinch of salt and let stand for 30 minutes. Drain the beans, bacon and vegetables and transfer to a bowl; reserve 2 cups of the cooking liquid 1.

3.

1/2 pound thick-cut bacon, finely chopped 1 large onion, finely diced 1 celery rib, finely diced 2 medium carrots, finely diced, plus 2 large carrots, cut into 2 1/2inch lengths 14 ounces dried cannellini beans (2 cups), soaked overnight and drained sea salt Black pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons coriander seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 3/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Twelve 2-ounce chrizo sausages 2 large sweet potatoes (1 1/4 pounds), peeled and cut into 2 1/2inch pieces 3 turnips (3/4 pound), peeled and cut into 2 1/2-inch pieces 4 ouncescrusty bread, crusts removed, bread cut into 1/4-inch dice (2 cups) 2 tablespoons minced parsley 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest Plain yogurt, for serving

4.

Preheat the oven to 170°. In a small pan, toast the cumin, coriander and mustard seeds over moderate heat, shaking the pan, until fragrant and the mustard seeds begin to pop, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer
to a spice grinder and let cool. Add the smoked paprika and crushed red pepper and grind the harissa blend into a powder. Wipe out the casserole and heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in it. Add the chrizo and cook over moderate heat, until lightly browned all over, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Do not wipe out the casserole. Add the sweet potatoes, turnips and large carrots to the casserole. Season with salt and black pepper and cook over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, 5 minutes. Add the harissa spice blend and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in the bean mixture and the reserved 2 cups of cooking liquid and bring just to a simmer. Arrange the chrizo on top. Cover and bake the
cassoulet for about 1 hour, until the beans are tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Remove from the oven and uncover the cassoulet. Preheat the grill. In a bowl, toss the bread, parsley, lemon zest and the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil; season with salt and black pepper. Sprinkle the bread over the cassoulet and grill until golden and crisp. Let the cassoulet stand for 10 minutes before serving. Pass yogurt at the table.

Hello Everybody! IT’S 2016! Where did 2015 go? Seriously. I’m actually writing this week’s page from Toronto in Canada, I’ve been here for a week and I have another week to go. It’s fab, I love it, there’s so much to do, and something for everyone. I’m heading to see The Niagara Falls tomorrow, which is very exciting. To keep up with my Travels you can follow me on Instagram and Snapchat @Bexblah. After Toronto it’s back to Dublin City for me. I have lots of plans for 2016, lots of goals too. I’m going to start off 2016 with my 2016 GOALS. How cliche of me?

2016 GOALS SAY YES.

In life, there are so many opportunities. And sometimes we don’t say ‘YES’ enough, either because we’re afraid or because it’s out of our comfort zone. So for 2016, I am going to say yes to any positive opportunites that come my way.

DRINK MORE WATER.

Drinking water has SO MANY BENEFITS. So I’m going to try and drink more. I’ll start at 2 litres a day and build it up from there.

SKINCARE ROUTINE, EVERY. NIGHT.

I have always been into taking care of my skin, seeing as I had acne for YEARS I kinda had to. I finally cleared my acne in 2015, and now I take a lot of interest in taking care of my skin. I use Kiehls skincare products and I have found a routine that really works for me, I will do a full page on skincare in the next few weeks. I can get a bit lazy at night time when it comes to my routine, sleeping in your makeup is HORRIFIC for your skin and I rarely do it. But this year, whether or not I wear makeup that day, I want to cleanse, tone and apply skin creams/oils EVERY NIGHT. I’m nearly 22, and I don’t want any wrinkles thank you, prevention is better than cure!

STICK TO THE GYM!

The first half of 2015 I killed it in the gym, the second half? Not so hot. September to December was a DISASTER. What’s done is done and I can’t change the past but it’s a new year, and I really want to lead a healthier lifestyle. I have my membership for when I get back to Dublin and I plan on using it.

2 BLOGPOSTS A WEEK.

2016 will be the year that my online blog, BEXBLAH.COM gets the love it deserves. I want to post at least twice a week, and I want 90% of the pictures on my blog to be my own.

YOUTUBE!!

I set up my YouTube channel last year, but I am yet to post any content. I do have 28 subscribers though! 2016 is the year I will get stuck into YouTube. I have so many video ideas, there’s just a lot of time and effort that goes into it. And I want to produce high quality content so I just need to invest in a few more pieces of equipment and I’m ready to go. Go subscribe to Bexblah on Youtube to be first to see my first video!

TRAVEL MORE.

In 2015 I did no major travelling, yes I went to Dublin a few times, before moving there, but compared to other years I did no travelling. Other than Toronto which I’m classing as 2016. So this year, I want to do a lot more travelling to places I hav never been before.

SAVE MONEY!

I am absolutely AWFUL at saving money, AWFUL. It’s never good to spend money until you can’t anymore, well it is but not in the long run. So this year I want to save some money, even if I do end up spluging it on a holiday or something in the end!

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO EVERYONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2016 ALREADY BUT I STILL THINK 2008 WAS LIKE 2 YEARS AGO. I’M ACTUALLY WRITING THIS WEEK’S PAGE FROM TORONTO IN CANADA, I’m on a 2 week holiday here and I am loving it. I have a week to go and then it’s back to reality, and Dublin for me. 2015, fitness wise was... Interesting. For the first half of the year I killed it, I was so motivated as I had a goal, my 21st birthday. And I was loving my gym, trainers etc. Then the second half of the year I just... let’s just say it wasn’t like the first half. I had no goals and it started to get colder and I moved to Dublin and created excuses. But it’s 2016 now, a new year with new possibilities, haha so cliche! But it is... No matter what you did last year, whether you ate clean for 365 days straight or signed up to a gym and never went, that’s all in the past now. You, like the time, have to keep moving forward. Stay on top of things, create new goals and don’t focus on old ones that didn’t exactly go to plan. Don’t get stuck in the, “Well if I started in September I would be doing better by now” frame of mind. You can’t change what has already happened. But you can make an effort to ensure that this year, you actually are that fitter healthier person that you want to become. What do I do from here you ask? SET GOALS. Not unrealistic ‘I want a stone gone by next week’ / ‘I want to bench 100kg tomorrow’ goals though. Unachieveable goals will only ensure that you give up because you aren’t seeing the results you want quick enough. Set goals that are true to you like... I want to join a gym and go 3-4 times a week. I want to go to a personal trainer to get a plan. I want to drink 2 litres of water every day. I want to be able to run 5k by the summer. I want to lose 2 inches off my waist by the end of the month. Short term, ACHIEVEABLE goals will help you stay on track and ensure you stay motivated! Take me for example, this time last year I had 12 weeks to my 21st birthday, I made a plan and set a goal. I stuck to it, I felt great. After that did I set any goals? No. Why? I have no idea. What happened? Nothing, and not in a good way. There are SO many gyms in Tralee, that cater to all different needs. Whether you want a more class based program at Joe O’Connors Nisus Fitness, or you want a gym with a wide range of facilities including a steam and sauna with personal training services like at Manor West Hotel or The Brandon, or you want a no fuss results driven gym like Hercules with Trainers like the guys in Victory Fitness. If you don’t want a gym at all there are running clubs, walking clubs, cycling clubs. If you want to focus more on what you eat there is Slimming World and Weight Watchers. My point is, no matter what kind of person you are or what goals you have, there is something for everyone. Set a few goals this year and SMASH them!

ELYSHA BRENNAN & DÁITHÍ Ó SÉ IN CORK TO START SEARCH FOR 2016 ROSE OF TRALEE ON WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS A NEW selection process, more Roses, an extra night on TV and a longer Festival - Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan and RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé celebrated Women’s Christmas in Cork where they announced details of the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. Taking place from 17th to 23rd August, the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival will run for seven days featuring 68 Roses, 68 Rose Escorts, more family entertainment and an extra night’s TV coverage. The hottest topic for families during Christmas was the news that whoever is selected to be the next Rose from Clare to Chicago, Dubai to Dublin, New York to New Zealand or Sydney to Sligo, will be guaranteed a place at the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. Elysha will embark on a month-long tour of Ireland to share that positive news with Irish women aged between 18 and 27 who may have ambitions to become her successor in 2016. As a medical student, Lurgan Hospital will be a fitting first port of call for Elysha on Sunday 10th January before travelling to Newry, Rostrevor later that day and on to Belfast on Monday 11th January to visit Stormont, Titanic and City Hall to meet the Lord Mayor. Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, who came through the Regional qualifiers as the 2015 Meath Rose said: “This is great news for anyone who considers entering the 2016 Rose selection in their regions. Whoever is picked as their 2016 county, city or country Rose will travel to Tralee in August. Such is the continued success of the Rose of Tralee on TV, RTÉ are introducing a third night of Rose of Tralee TV coverage from next year onwards. The Festival itself has also been extended from five to seven days and 68 Roses will travel to Tralee to enjoy the full festival.” For the past 11 years most of the Roses had to travel to the midlands at the end of May to take part in a qualifying event to try and make it through to the televised stages of Ireland’s top family festival. Only 32 Roses can be accommodated on live TV and, until now, it wasn’t feasible for the organisers to accommodate the full inclusion of the other 38 Roses at the Festival in Tralee. An extra hour-long documentary, tracing the Roses’ journey to Tralee, will be screened on RTÉ on Sunday 21st August during which the viewers will find out what 32 Roses were selected to appear on the live televised selections in the Festival Dome on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd August. The 2016 Rose of Tralee will be crowned live on RTÉ One on Tuesday 23rd August. Full details on how to become a Rose and an online application form are available from www.RoseofTralee.ie. Information on this year’s Festival family-friendly entertainment line-up will be announced in the coming weeks. 24

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A PILOT WAS WELCOMING THE PASSENGERS ON THE PLANE SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF...

wine then gives her a little tour, finally ending up in the bedroom where he shows her his enormous collection of stuffed animals. He’s even got them organized: large stuffed animals on a high shelf all along two walls. Then medium-sized ones just under the big ones, and little ones on two more shelves all along the bottom. They’re all cuddly, lovely and very cute. She’s impressed and decides he must be the sensitive man she’s been looking for all her life. He puts his arm around her, they start kissing, and eventually spend all night together . Then early in the morning as they are lying together, relaxed. She turns to him, gives him a squeeze, and asks how it was for him. The guy says, “You can take any prize from the bottom shelf.”

“Thank you for flying with us this morning. The weather is.....” Then suddenly he starts screaming while he is still on the mic, “OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! IT’S BURNING!!!” A ghostly silence reigned. He gets back on the microphone and says, “I sincerely apologize for the incident, but I just dropped a very hot cup of coffee on my lap.. you should see my pants!” One passenger shouts back, “WHY DON’T YOU COME HERE AND SEE OURS!!!”

FOUR FORMER U.S. PRESIDENTS...

Four former U.S. presidents are caught in a horrible tornado that hits a state funeral they’re all attending in Kansas. Suddenly, all of them are blown off to Oz. They finally make it to the Emerald City and come before the Great and Powerful Oz. “What brings you before the great Wizard of Oz?” Jimmy Carter steps forward timidly: “I’ve come for some courage.” ”No problem!” says the Wizard. “Who is next?” Ronald Reagan steps forward, “Well…I…I think I need a heart.” ”Done,” says the Wizard. “Who comes next before the great and powerful Oz?” Up steps George W. Bush, who says, “I’m told by the American people that I need a brain.” ”Not a problem!” says the Wizard. “Consider it done.” There is a great silence in the hall. Bill Clinton is just standing there, looking around, but doesn’t say a word. Irritated, the Wizard finally asks, “What do you want?” ”Ummm,” he says quietly, “is Dorothy around?”

The cannibals all shook their heads, “No.” After the boss had left, the leader of the cannibals said to the others, “Which one of you idiots ate the secretary?” A hand rose hesitantly. “You fool!” the leader continued. “For four weeks we’ve been eating managers and no one noticed anything. But now, you had to go and eat someone who actually does something.”

TORQUING CARS! VOLVO TO LET YOU CONTROL YOUR CAR REMOTELY VIA VOICE COMMANDS

Swedish car manufacturer teams up with Microsoft to make ‘Knight Rider’ fantasies a reality More than 30 years after the TV show Knight Rider first showed David Hasselhoff talking into his watch to contact his high-tech car, KITT,Volvo and Microsoft have made the technology real. Volvo owners will be able to speak to their car via a Microsoft Band 2wristband, instructing it to perform a range of tasks, including set the satnav, lock the doors and turn on the heater. The system works through Volvo’s On Call app, which already lets you do these things through your smartphone, but without the voice control element. This isn’t the first time Volvo and Microsoft have collaborated. Last year they demonstrated how Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality headset could be used to improve the car buying experience in future. And the two companies have previously said that they will work together to develop self-driving cars and the technology that will subsequently allow people to work on the move. Thomas Müller, Volvo’s vice president of electrics and e-propulsion, said: “[we are] intent on making the car experience as easy and convenient as possible by utilising the latest technology in the most relevant and inspiring ways. With voice control, we are only just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible with digital assistant functionalities.” The ability to summon your car via your watch, as Hasselhoff’s character Michael Knight did, is still a little way away, although BMW demonstrated a prototype version of such a system last January, and it has said it aims to have the technology ready for implementation by 2020. Volvo owners who like the idea of speaking to their car via a Microsoft Band 2 will be available to do so from spring 2016.

M50 JUNCTIONS TO GET NEW LAYOUT TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW

Engineering works to improve the merging of traffic onto the M50 are expected to be extended throughout the motorway later this year. A new merging lane layout is currently under trial at the junction of the M3 and the M50. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said if the project is successful it could be extended along the route in 2016. “This is an engineering step that will force drivers to stay in their merging lane longer, giving them time to get up to the merging speed,” TII spokesman Sean O’Neill said. “What happens currently is the merging driver tries to get over as quickly as possible, so they are not at the right speed, and drivers on the M50 brake, which also reduces the flow.” The M3 trial “seems to be going well” Mr O’Neill said. “If it continues to go well, the potential in the coming year is that it will be extended to the critical section of it M50 from the M1 to the N81 Tallaght/Templeogue junction, and then to the full length.” The measure is the first step in a new plan to ease the worsening congestion on the road which caters for in excess of 350,000 vehicle trips each weekday. Over the next two to three years TII is planning to introduce variable speed limits to improve traffic flows and reduce congestion on the M50. New overhead gantry signage will direct motorists to alternative routes in the event of lane closures caused by collisions, and will alert drivers to changing speed limits on the road. This results in a more even speed on the road and reduces the potential of crashes Mr O’Neill said. However speaking on RTÉ radio’s Today with Sean O’Rourke show Irish Road Haulage Association president Verona Murphy said a similar speed limit system had not worked on the M25 in London. “It’s outrageous to say the M25 works, it doesn’t work. This system doesn’t work, its just more spin from the Government.” A demand management study, commissioned by the National Roads Authority, which has now been subsumed into TII, last year recommended more tolling points along the M50 to reduce congestion. “Multipoint tolling could decrease traffic by 10 per cent,” Mr O’Neill said. “But we’re been told by the Government to implement the lane merging and the gantry signs first, to sweat the existing asset.”

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR NEW YEAR’S GREETINGS AND SPORTING HOPES: Happy New Year to all our readers and welcome back to what we hope will be another great sporting year. Hopefully we can entertain you during the year with the best of Tralee sports news. Once again we will be delighted to receive notes and information for any sporting body or organisation and also we would like to cover any Fan Clubs that want to have their notes published. So what are the wishes for 2016? Like all years we expect Kerry to be in the shake up for Sam and will be expected to be in Croke Park in September. I would think that management’s wishes are that they can have an injury free year. While Kerry will always have a strong panel even they cannot do without the likes of James O’Donoghue or Colm Cooper so hopefully in 2016 they will get back to full fitness. On a sadder note the county is coming to terms with the death at much too young an age of Paddy Curtin. The send-off he got showed the esteem in which he was held both in his parish in Moyvane and in the whole county. There is no doubt Kerry will use his memory as motivation during the coming season. Back to looking forward and it will be an interesting year for the Kerry minors with Peter Keane now at the helm. He has big boots to fill following on from Jack O’Connor’s back to back All Ireland winning teams. Of course minor teams in the most are totally new each year an Peter has the knowledge and experience to do the job. The hurlers face a big step up playing in the Munster League and in the All Ireland series. With a new management team in place it is a big year and their wish will to be competitive. Onto soccer and there is no doubt what the wishes of all involved in the ‘Beautiful Game’ will be. It will be to see the u17 League of Ireland team having a successful first season. It is a huge step forward for the game in the county and changes the landscape for young players. They can now go from schoolboy level into the League of Ireland and hopefully once we have a good first season in the 17’s League of Ireland we can progress into the u19’s as well. There really is no point in just having the 17’s team and then nothing but that’s for 2017 /18. From a Kerry senior point of view keeping the Oscar Traynor run going is the big priority and hopefully they can get past the AUL. In the Schoolboys League it will be hard to match last year with the Kennedy and Galway Cup wins. But the squads are already in training and one thing is for sure no stone will be left unturned in the defence of these prestigious titles. Clubs in the KDL and the Schoolboys Girls Leagues will have their own priorities but a National title continues to be the big ambition.

TRALEE ADVERTISER

There are a number of young Tralee players who are at present on Republic of Ireland training squads and hopefully they can make the breakthrough while the likes of Rian O’Sullivan, Shane McLoughlin and Jesse Stafford Lacey are making big names for themselves in the game an will be hoping for more calls ups to National squads. Rugby fans have had a good start to the New Year with the news that ex Tralee Rugby club player Ultan Dillane has been called into Joe Schmidt’s extended Irish training squad. The 22 year old is now starring with Connacht. Many will be hoping that Munster can get back to challenging for the big prizes. In racing Kerry is on the crest of a wave with jockeys such as Oisin Murphy, Bryan Cooper an Jack Kennedy making big names for themselves plus Tom Cooper amongst the countries top trainers. They will all be looking forward to the next few months when the National Hunt season reaches its peak. In the world of greyhounds Kerry will always be up there with the best. The top trainers will be hoping to bring home some of the title from the National Coursing meeting in Clonmel. Cian O’Sullivan and Rebecca Ryan, both with Mercy Mounthawk connections received early Christmas presents as they were called up by Irish teams. St Brendan’s Basketball club have a huge Cup date next weekend – more about that later while Team Garvey’s are in a battle for a Women’s Division 1 play-off place. There are lots of other sports I didn’t mention like cycling where the season will again kick off in the coming weeks with the Lacey Cup, athletics, swimming an darts for example. We will endeavour to cover all these and more over the coming months. Support Sport: While I wish for success for all sports my main wish is that people start coming out to support live sport. I have to say I was disappointed with the size of the crowd at the Garvey’s game last Saturday night. It was an ideal night after Christmas to come out and cheer on the team. With the aforementioned Kerry U17 team joining the FAI’s National League for it to be a success it will need support of the soccer public. Hurling will be making the same plea as will many other sports so for 2016 lets all make a resolution to get out and support local sport. GARVEY’S COME GOOD AT START OF HOME RUN: While they had a slow start Team Garvey’s upped the pace an in the end ran out easy winners of a plucky Longford Falcons side in Mouthhawk Gym. The home side won 59-34 to get their run of home games off to the perfect start. Garvey’s came from 8 points down to hit 10 first quarter points in a row and continue into the second period to extend the run to 19 without reply. Garveys led 27-16 at the break

Friday 8th January 2016

and continued to lead all the way to the end. They have 4 of their remaining 5 games in Kerry with 3 more at home and one away in Castleisland. Indeed the two Kerry derbies between Garvey’s and Team Den Joes American Style will go a long way to deciding if Garvey’s, or indeed Team Den Joes, can make the play-offs. BRENDAN’S READY FOR HULA HOOPS SEMI-FINALS: The Saint Brendan’s senior men’s team are in action this Sunday in the Hula Hoops Intermediate National Cup semi-final. They face Cork Celts in St Mary’s Hall Portlaoise at 2.30pm and confidence is high in the side. They have already beaten Shannon Jets, Portlaosie Panthers and Phoenix of Belfast to get to the last 4. The team were very impressive when winning the Castleisland Blitz and with the likes of Fergal and Darren O’Sullivan, Kieran Donaghy and the rest of the squad hopes are high of a place in a big National final. A supporter’s bus is traveling to Portlaoise and will leave the Castle Bar at 10am and is e10 return. THE REST OF THE ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: In the Boys u18 County League St Brendan’s went down 63-71 to Gneeveguilla. The Tralee side were hit early with Shane O’Connor picking up 4 fouls and had to sit out much of the game. However they led 17-15 after the first quarter but were down 6 at the break. Turnovers force by Gneeveguilla caused St Brendan’s problems and it was 49-58 after three quarters and the home side held on to win. David McCarthy was the top scorer on 20 followed by Dominic Craig on 16 and James Roche on 13. In the u16’s the first of the year’s derby meetings with Tralee Tigers was a cracker with the Saints coming out on top 32-30. Tigers were up early on but the Brendan’s boys turned it around to lead in the final quarter. However credit to Tigers as they levelled matters with 30 seconds to go. But Brendan’s George Reidy came up with a cracking basket to win the game. The 14’s had a very good win over St Bridgets and led 15-2 early on. They continued to dominate for the rest of the game and the result reflects the steady improvement of the squad and the hard work they are putting in in training. Garry Lynch was the top scorer on 14 followed by Graham Sheehy on 9, Liam Kingston on 6 along with Daniel Bowler. This squad were also very impressive in the Castleisland Blitz before going down in the final to Castleisland. PARK TO WALK DOWN THE AVENUE: In the 3rd Round of the FAI Youths Cup St

The action resumes as usual on Tuesday next followed by the weekend’s action RAIN NO DETERRENT TO FENIT SWIMMERS: While the weather did not play ball it couldn’t deter the swimmers who continued the long unbroken tradition of the Christmas Day Swim in Fenit. 425 plucky souls took to the water with a huge crowd of spectators cheering them on. While it was wet the mild weather made the swim a bit more pleasurable and the water was calm and an acceptable 9 degrees. The swimmers enjoyed the festive atmosphere, music and refreshments as the swimmers lined up for the annual special rendition of Jingle Bells by a ‘special guest’! The pile of stones washed up was a discomfort for the swimmers and hopefully this issue can be addressed by the Local Authority before the 2016 tourist season. The organsiers were delighted with the support given by all to the collection for the RNLI Fenit whose members were on hand with hoy refreshments for the swimmers. CAMOGIE GIRLS SET TO CELEBRATE: 2015 was a great year for the counties camogie teams with their winning of the Munster Junior Championship, beating Cork, being the highlight. The Kerry girls were also successful in the National League Division 4. On the club scene Clanmaurice were crowned the Munster Junior Club champions for the second year in a row and were also winners of the LIT Summer League while St Anne’s won the Minor Championship. So the players and supporters will have 5 sets of medals on show on the night of their social which will be held in the Stretford End McHales Bar, Causeway this Friday night, January 8th,

PARNELLS NEWS: An open workshop will be hosted on Friday January 15th in Kerins O’Rahillys at 7.30pm and this is the follow up to the well-attended Parnells meeting that was held in late November. Everyone is invited to attend, including those who are not actively involved in the club. This is the ideal place for those with an interest in Hurling and Camogie development and to work on ideas for the development of both hurling and camogie in Tralee. Parnells had some highlights in 2015 and these were included in the report to the Kerry Camogie County Board. Some of these were the Night of Champions on June 19th, training sessions with the Kerry senior team, the trip to the All-Ireland final and the work done on the Cul camps. The club also took part in the Veronica Stack Memorial Tournament at Dr Crokes alongside teams from outside the county. 2015 was a big year for the club and they are now looking forward to the coming season with confidence. The club thanks Moss Spillane groundskeeper at Caherslee and Na Gaeil for the use of their grounds. Volunteers: The club is looking for volunteers to help out for just one hour per week during the season. People with hurling and camogie experience or those new to the sport are welcome with a variety of volunteering opportunities available within the club. ST PAT’S STORIES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,7,8 and 13. This weekend’s Jackpot will be e4,200 with the draw in Skelper Quane’s Bar on Sunday night. RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN THE ENTHUSIASM OF CHRISTMAS DAY SWIMMERS IN FENIT

Not even the persistent morning rain could dampen the enthusiasm of the plucky swimmers who togged off for the traditional dip at Locke’s Beach, Fenit on Christmas Day. Although the wet and overcast conditions kept many people at home, about 425 swimmers made light of the weather to enjoy a seasonal swim as a large crowd looked on. In contrast with the heavy rain, the mild 12C temperature was a pleasant surprise. Unlike recent storms Desmond, Eva and Frank, the beach was wind free and the sea, with temperature at a very acceptable 9C, was calm and inviting. Despite the downpour, all the regular Christmas Day swimmers turned up to take part in a well-established and popular swim. The buzz of excitement and giddy anticipation was tangible as people gathering in the car park were met by lively seasonal music. Even the rain had reduced to a drizzle as the swimmers lined up on the sandy beach at 11.55am for a lively rendition of Jingle Bells before the traditional charge to the sea at noon. The majority of swimmers did the customary three charges into the sea. All the swimmers behaved sensible and got in, got down, got out and got warm. A special feature of the day was the presence of many people home for ChristMaking their way to Locke’s Beach in Fenit for mas. A substantial cohort of young swimmers also took the plunge into the cold another superb Christmas Day swim were regular sea. As was the case last year, the piles of stone, which have been washed up participants, from left, Billy Ryle, Connie Turner and along the front of the beach, by high tides and gale force winds, caused some Paddy Kissane discomfort for swimmers. It’s an issue that needs to be addressed by the Local Photo: Shane Turner Authority before the 2016 tourist season begins. The sizable collection went to RNLI Fenit, whose members were in position with their collection boxes from 11am and were generously supported by the festive crowd. The RNLI also provided piping hot soup, tea and coffee for one and all throughout the day. The warm refreshments went down a treat after the swim but people didn’t delay unduly as the heavy rain began to fall once more. It was time to head home for a warm shower and dinner, the appetite for which had been whetted by another outstanding Christmas Day swim. 34
