WE MEET A G A IN , T R A D IE S .. . G’day and welcome back to the April issue of The Tradie!
I
n this issue, we follow the journey of the team behind the Shitbox Rally as they gear up for the 2017 event. Check out the ripper pics and some words from the crew from page 14. They’re doing it for a great cause and with bloody big grins on their faces, so kudos to everyone involved for that! We keep the laughs coming in this issue with some wise words from David Strassman, puppeteer genius! The Ultimate Guide to Smoko has also got the giggle glands going from page 12. If you didn’t see the viral video of Olly the show dog last month, the Ultimate Guide to Smoko is worth checking out – oh, the laughs! And the free stuff – oh my, we are stocked with it! Fancy grabbing a Swiss Tool to add to your collection, or a sturdy portable charger for your phone – flip the pages to see how easy it is to grab yourself one! As for me, I don’t have any crazy blunders to report this month - sorry to disappoint you all! Perhaps the May issue will see the chronicles of Aly’s at-home Tradie work continue! Wish me luck! Until next time…
Aly.

operating costs is an optional auto-idling system, which reduces engine speed when controls are inactive for over five seconds. An advanced hydraulic system boosts productivity and enhances digging performance. A flow sharing main control valve offers fast cycle times, while a load sensing variable displacement piston pump delivers flow on demand, lowering operating costs.
VOLVO SMALLWONDER ECR25D SHORT SWING RADIUS EXCAVATOR GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL N
ot only is the new ECR25D short swing radius compact excavator easy to maneuver and transport, it packs the breakout and tearout forces of a much larger machine — with an engine designed for powerful performance, excellent fuel economy and low emissions. It might be small, but the ECR25D compact excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment delivers maximum mobility, performance and power. Heavy loads are easily managed with the excellent lifting capacity of the ECR25D, and superior control and balance keep the machine surefooted in any situation. Productivity is maximized by a high-performing, fuel efficient engine and advanced hydraulic components. This versatile machine is highly mobile and efficient, and has low running costs, making it

ideal for any application requiring small excavators.
SMALL BUT MIGHTY The narrow design of the ECR25D makes it ideal for working in confined areas and urban environments — electrical wire installation or water piping repair can be performed quickly with limited impact to the traffic or neighborhood. For more demanding operations or greater versatility, the machine can be equipped with an additional counterweight; in such cases, the tail radius minimally exceeds track width, preventing collision or damage — a benefit in residential areas. The ECR25D is powered by a fuel-efficient, Tier 3-certified, 20.9 hp (15.6 kW) engine. Further enhancing fuel efficiency and lowering
ATTENTION TO DETAIL The ECR25D might be small, but it leads its class in ergonomics — providing outstanding operator comfort. The access area is large, so operators can get in and out easily without bumping controls, and a flat, uncluttered floor offers ample foot space. An adjustable seat, ergonomic armrests and ideally positioned controls facilitate intuitive operation. The machine can be positioned quickly and easily, as slew and offset movements are controlled simultaneously via a proportional roller and joystick that are precise and easy to use. Large, hydraulic travel pedals provide the operator accurate, hands-free track control, while an automatic, two-speed travel function allows the machine to downshift when more effort is required. Low speed mode can be enabled at the flip of a switch for more sensitive operations. Excellent visibility is provided to the blade, digging equipment and tracks — improving precision and jobsite safety. Three-point entry and roll over protection (ROPS) are standard, helping ensure operator safety. The ECR25D compact excavator is also easy to service and maintain. All checks points are readily accessible at ground level and grouped under a wide-opening, lockable hood. Greasing need only be carried out every 50 hours. A patented multi-function hydraulic oil filter/filler improves protection of the hydraulic system and provides early detection of oil pollutants. BAKERY FINED AFTER
WORKERS FINGER AMPUTATED
A
bakery in Altona North was fined $40,000 for breaching the 2004 OHS Act after a worker's fingertips were amputated by a machine filling pastries with custard. The company, which was fined without conviction, was also ordered to pay costs of $3974. On 2 December 2015, the worker was operating a
machine used to fill pastries with custard. The court heard that one of the worker’s tasks was to manually refill the machine because the filler pump was broken. After noticing that the custard was not dispensing equally into the pastry casings, the worker reached into the machine to clear a blockage. His hand became stuck and the tips of three of his fingers
were amputated. The worker told WorkSafe investigators that he had not been trained if a malfunction occurred. “I stood on a small step and reached into the depositor with my right hand which I had seen other people do to mix up the custard,” the worker said. “I had not been trained (if there was a malfunction) and
there was no-one to ask. When my right hand was inside the depositor I pushed the custard down. The next thing I felt something grab three of my fingers being my index finger, middle finger and ring finger.” WorkSafe Victoria Executive Director Health and Safety, Marnie Williams, said a lack of proper training and lack of guarding on machinery was a potentially deadly combination.

WHATTA SH*TBOX! THE SHITBOX RALLY ISN’T A RACE, IT’S A CHALLENGE TO ACHIEVE THE UNTHINKABLE: TO DRIVE CARS WORTH $1,000 ACROSS AUSTRALIA VIA SOME OF THE MOST ARDUOUS ROADS, ALL IN THE NAME OF CHARITY! CHIPPY AND SHITBOX RALLY DRIVER TOM HISTON TELLS US ABOUT HOW HE CAME TO BE PART OF THE HIGHLYANTICIPATED 2017 EVENT…
I
'm 40 years old and have been in the building game for over 20 years. I did my carpentry trade straight out of school at 16 and went on to be a carpenter. My father was a concreter, so I did my fair share of concreting over the years, too. I live in a small coastal town, three hours south of Sydney called Ulladulla and I’ve lived here the majority of my life. I run a carpentry crew in Ulladulla called Tom Histon Carpentry for the last six years and before that I was working for Coastal Carpentry and Concreting for around six years, too. I became interested in the Shitbox Rally after seeing a couple of cars in town that had participated. They obviously stand out and I was curious about them. After that I got a call from a guy whose entry car into the rally was a Ford Fairlane limousine and he wanted some beds built into the back to sleep in while on the rally. I built the beds and

we had a few chats about the rally and I thought it sounded like an awesome event for a great cause! A year later I went on a cruise ship where I met my partner Hayley and I found out she was participating in the 2016 SBR Rally with her sister. Two years earlier Hayley lost her father to a long bout with cancer and was doing it in memory of him. I was touched by this because I’d lost several family members and close friends to the disease and was really impressed that she was actually doing something towards it! The following year I took the opportunity for Hayley and I to put a team in and I'm looking forward to doing the rally for my first time because Hayley has not shut up about last year’s rally! I’ve seen the YouTube videos and it looks like a right royal hoot! I'd say what I'm most looking forward to in the rally is being part of such a big movement with other like-minded people. I’m proud to be contributing to a great cause that touches so many and the dress ups... Well, we love dress ups! So far our team named ‘WeGotThis’ has raised just over $2,000. Coming from a small town, the majority of our donations so far have come from family and friends who are right behind us. Our major sponsors’ donations are yet be added to our tally total and with two months to go and the majority of donations coming in late, we would like to crack $5,000. Our entry this year is a BA Ford falcon Wagon. It’s purple in colour

which has us running with a 'Purple People Eater' theme. The car is currently at the sign writers, Designtech (which is one of our major sponsors), undergoing a face lift - or moreso, getting a face put on! We know the rally is a challenge but we’re not really worried about anything during the event. We don't mind roughing it and I'm pretty sure we're prepared to sail under the saying 'everything that can go wrong, will go wrong’ and I think that will make it better for the adventure! N
day. Tradies also want greater levels of durability so they don’t have to keep going back to the shops to replace them. Because of this we have completed the development of the Blacksmith Premium range of safety boots.
Since the market introduction in 2009, the Blacksmith workboot r ange has been offering Tradies a very affordable and durable safety boot option that complies with the AS/NZS2210.3:2009 safety footwear standards.
There are 7 new styles offering various features and benefits, but all of them offering improved comfort and durability. We have 3 Convenient Zip-sided styles, 2 Lightweight Hiker styles and 2 traditional elastic sided styles.
Over the years, the range has adapted to market requirements, with the introduction of wheat nubuck uppers, zip sided options and light weight hiker style soles, whilst still maintaining its core elastic sided and lace-up styles, at a starting price of $39.
Blacksmith Workboots now offer Tradies 13 styles to choose from. We are very confident that we have a boot to fit most people’s needs. With pricing that starts at $39 and with the Ultimate Premium style costing $99, we are also confident we have a boot to fit your budget.
More recently, Tradies are demanding a much greater level of comfort from their boots, which many have on their feet for over 10 hours each

YOU CANNOT
TO SUCCESS The #1 reason we work is to make money. Profit = revenue – costs.

nfortunately, it’s pretty normal to only really examine your business as you go through a rough patch. So, how do we get those profits back up? If you choose to cut costs, be careful because you can cut too deep. You can cut so deep that you actually do more harm than good. Of course, we should always be vigilant with costs. If your overheads are not managed properly they can get out of control and become an evertightening noose around your

You’re a business owner. An entrepreneur. Think about why you do the work you do. If you haven’t already, make a list of what your priorities and goals are. It’s too easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day and forget the bigger picture.

What if your costs were already at the very minimum for your business to operate at an optimal level? What happens when business picks up again? You’re going to need some overheads in place to be able to cope with the additional work.

ROADBLOCKS FOR TRADIES TO AVOID IN BUSINESS by jon mailer, FOUNDER & CEO - protrade united
Keen to reach your business goals this year? Take a look at our five key tips to get your business on the right track… 1. INCREASE IN CLARITY Clarity is the pre-requisite to mastery. Vague goals and outcomes produce vague results. For example, you may have a goal to increase your turnover, number of jobs, gross profit, net profit, or type of work that you wish to do. The fault is in the word ‘more’. What exactly does ‘more’ mean? Is it one dollar more? Is it one percent more? Is it one more job? When you apply specifics it becomes real. An example of a clear, specific goal is, “I would like to ensure a consistent gross profit per job of 65 per cent throughout the year”. You then have a measurement to which you can relate, rather than just the intention of more gross profit.
2. SAYING YES The word no is one of the hardest words for many tradespeople to say. It appears too hard to say no to the wrong work, to the wrong employees, or to doing work with little margins. But if you continue to say yes, you become all things to everyone and nothing to no one. This year, toughen your no muscle and say no to more and yes to less - yes to less, but with better quality.
3. BETTER SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES In business, people don't fail, systems do. One of the requirements of a successful business that produces consistent and sustainable results for the owner, is the quality of the back-end procedures that are written. Continues on page 22

Ensure that your top 10 to 20 key processes are documented from start to finish, and that you refine them and train your team so the same outcome is delivered consistently, regardless of the small changes that takes place on site.
4. SECURING THE RIGHT PEOPLE Procedures and processes are important, but mean nothing without the right people. Hiring smart and having the right people doing the right things in the right way, is essential to your success this year. If you hire the wrong people who do the wrong thing in the wrong way, then you are headed for a disaster. Hire slowly, be clear on the 22

attributes you want in your team players (more importantly attitude and values over skills) and ensure that you get the wrong people off the team as quickly as you can.
5. ELIMINATING DISTRACTIONS We live today, in a sea of distractions. From the moment that you wake in the morning, until the time you go to bed and on any given business day your conscious and subconscious mind will have been bombarded with up to 10,000 messages beeps, alerts, rings, pings, emails and SMS notifications. Many could be important, but at least 80 per cent of them are irrelevant to you accomplishing your key goals for the
year. Once you are distracted and your focus is lost, it takes energy and time to reapply yourself. Stay focused and choose your distractions wisely. Achieving success in business is actually quite boring. It's the repetition of simple structures over and over. Minimise distractions, be clear on the outcome and you will be in a much better position at the end of this year than the majority of the business owners around you. WHY AND WHAT TO DO… As the problem lies with the junctions, not the pipes, It is recommended to protect these junctions, particularly where soils move around 70-120mm from dry to wet and back. Junctions found within 2mtrs of the building footprint internally will face moisture porosity soaking from the outside of the footprint, thus creating soil movement INSIDE this footprint. The designs of the slab or foundations are designed to resist this but if the pipes are

FUNNY MAN
David
Strassman Photo courtesy of Adam Shane Photography
He’s known for his stagecraft in ventriloquism and this May funny-man David Strassman returns to our shores to show us what his sassy puppets have to say. We took some time out with the legend himself…
SO, YOU’RE COMING BACK TO AUSTRALIA! TELL US YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING DOWN HERE… Australia is my second home! I’ve been performing here since 1991 and I just love the quality of life here in “straya!” I mean, where else in the world, every Saturday arvo, can you count on a sausage sizzle at Bunnings?
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW SHOW – WE HEAR YOU DO UP TO SIX VOICES AT ONCE?! Yes, I break all laws of puppet physics! Using
a wireless handheld controller, I operate and throw my voice into five puppets’ mouths for a 20-minute, hilarious conversation/argument on what is real and what isn’t. It’s mindblowing - and the work and technology that goes into this feat of raw performance is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career!
WITHOUT GIVING AWAY YOUR SECRETS, HOW ON EARTH DO YOU JUGGLE SO MANY CHARACTERS SIMULTANEOUSLY? That’s simple - practice and hard work! It took a year to prepare and rehearse for this show. Continues on page 30

STORM REPAIR INNOVATION
KEEPS KELLYVILLE RESIDENTS
SAFE AND DRY before you get a new roof or what's going to happen." Catherine says that with news of another Tasman low hitting the coast and more bad weather on the way, she's relieved to have the protection of Stormseal.
The storm only lasted for fifteen minutes, but nearly four weeks later Sydney residents are still reeling from the devastation.
T
he thunderstorm that struck Sydney a month ago hit Kellyville particularly hard, with tennis ball sized hailstones smashing cars and breaking open tile roofs throughout the suburb. Many houses in Stynes Avenue are still waiting for repairs with blue taurpaulins being held down with sandbags and lengths of string over broken rooftops. Kellyville resident & GIO customer, Catherine Adkins' tile roof was damaged in the storm, but unlike her neighbours she doesn't have to make do with a tarpaulin.
“Fantastic, peace of mind, absolute peace of mind. Because you don't know how long it's going to be before you get a new roof or what's going to happen.” shrinks to cover a damaged roof or wall, providing secure protection from wind, rain and hail, and requiring no further intervention until permanent repairs are made. Catherine said residents were still coming to terms with the damage and the risk of more bad weather created ongoing stress.
Mrs Adkins is lucky to be one of the first people in the area to benefit from a new storm repair technology which provides a much greater level of security than traditional temporary roof coverings.
"You don't realise, the noise, it's just massive. I looked out across the road to the house across the street and they were hitting the tiles and the tiles were going boom. The neighbour across the street said he was watching my house and saw a couple of tiles go bang then saw this massive amount of water come straight down inside my house."
Stormseal is a unique, polymer technology for weatherproofing buildings. It’s a strong polyethylene film that heat-
"Until you go through an experience like that, you don't realise what it's like. It take you two days to really process
it. Because you're so busy making sure everybody's okay in the neighbourhood and talking to everyone. And then all of a sudden you just go oh my god that really did happen. And then you hear the rain on the roof, the rain on the tarps, and you can see where the leaks have been, and it's still coming in. You just don't feel safe." "It affects you. All these things happen at the same time. It's on the news and everyone's saying 'oh how horrible'. But then you don't hear about it again. And yet there's all these people left around here who's houses are absolutely wrecked. You can hear the tarps at night and you just can't sleep." "That's why when our builder, HomeRepair mentioned Stormseal I said 'fantastic, peace of mind, absolute peace of mind'. Because you don't know how long it's going to be
"The minute they said it was coming I felt better. I was really pleased because it's happened quicker than I first thought, the contractors were really professional. It was raining and I was worried they wouldn't be able to get it on, but they said 'no, we're coming, whatever happens we're going to get it on'. And I told all my neighbours about it. Talk to your insurance companies about Stormseal. The installation was fine, they don't need to come in, they don't need to get too involved." Stormseal inventor and Managing Director, Matthew Lennox, who invented the idea after a massive hail storm in 2007 said tarps just aren't good enough, policy holders should ask their insurance companies for Stormseal. "Stormseal has multiple advantages over tarpaulins. Tarps frequently require replacement, because they leak, tear, blow off, or collapse under the weight of pooling rainwater. Tarp failures cause further trauma to residents and more property damage, so that if it wasn’t already, the building may soon become uninhabitable. In contrast, once installed, Stormseal stays put.” T

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOU HAD THIS TALENT? I don’t think I discovered this talent. I think after years of consistently making people laugh, and getting paid for doing good work, I naturally fell into it. Ventriloquism is a pretty daggy profession. It’s down there with mimes and jugglers. I’ve tried my best to make it cool and worth watching.
