Welcome Aboard W
elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers, our dedicated crews will make your journey as comfortable as possible. Skippers has undertaken to continue services to Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, departing at 10:30am each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, coinciding with incoming aircraft to Broome. The flight will then depart Halls Creek at 15:00pm and arrive back into Broome at 16:45pm to coincide with outgoing aircraft from Broome. This schedule will be active for a trial period of 3 months and if there is sufficient support to make the service viable, it will continue. Communities in regional destinations are encouraged to embrace their airline provider and be aware of comparisons in airfare pricing between local and international destinations. For example, holiday locations like Bali welcome 8,000 people per week, whereas some local holiday destinations are down to 40 people per week. Under the Global Distribution System, any travel agent that has a SABRE GDS has the ability to book Skippers flights through their system. Please note, our new IATA Designator is now HK. An eclectic mix of extraordinary skills, ridiculous characterisation, hilarious mayhem and fabulous live music, this show is a celebration of the great values of Circus Oz that have generated critical acclaim and woven the company into the hearts of audiences around the world. A show of scale, the ensemble fills the theatre, reaching out to audiences and dazzling with spectacular group acts that are interspersed with intimate solo and duo skills. Built upon the traditional circus skills, these acts are subverted with a unique Australian voice. It’s larrikin story-telling, never taking ourselves too seriously, laughing in the face of danger, crying out with the fresh irreverence of the Aussie spirit. At the heart of the show is the diverse, multi-skilled mix of daredevil acrobats and acrobatically musical performers. During the show the individual members combine in dynamic large group acts: eight acrobats soaring through the air off a custom designed flying trapeze; or nine performers on a single bike; or ten scaling the height of two Chinese poles; or the entire stage filled with flying juggling clubs combined with fast and furious knockabout. The audience is close to overwhelmed with the visual and aural

spectacular. And then, a single acrobat ascends to the full height of the venue, suspended by just one foot off a trapeze, counter-weighted by the off-stage rigger and accompanied by a lone trumpeter. One individual’s incredible skill transfixes the audience on a single point on-stage. With an equal number of men and women in the ensemble, our female performers are role models of all that women are capable of – incredible strength and stamina, extraordinary grace, rebellious spirit, trailblazing leadership. Tickets are $45 for adults and are available from manpac.com.au

ADAM BRAND
We had a chat to the true blue aussie legend ahead of his gig at the deni ute muster YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER IN MUSIC YOUNG, PLAYING THE DRUMS WITH YOUR DAD – CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS A MUSICIAN? When I was 4 years old my dad and my uncles had a band called ‘Rising Rock’. My dad was rhythm guitarist and singer, Uncle Pete was on bass, Uncle Sam on drums and Uncle Sash was the dodgy manager because he was musically challenged (laughs)! I would watch them and I wanted to be just like Uncle Sam - sitting up the back of the band banging away on the drums. It just looked cool to a 4 year old and most of all, he got to make lots of noise (laughs)! So mum bought me a small drum kit and away I went. When I was 17 a couple of my mates and I got together and starting jamming in the garage like a lot of kids do, but we couldn’t find a singer and one of the guys was a drummer so I reluctantly gave up the drumsticks and filled the singing spot. If we had have found a singer I may not be talking to you now!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT COUNTRY MUSIC THAT GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING? Country music is and has been evolving over recent years. What I love about it is that it’s a melting pot of styles - blues, rock, pop, folk - and the major focus is on the lyric and story. Country audiences want more from their music than just a hook line sung over and over to a loop or beat. Country music takes you on a journey, connects with you and resonates with you. I didn’t grow up listening to traditional country artists, I was into The Eagles, John Cougar, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen – and all these artists are
amazing storytellers in their music and blur the lines between rock, pop and country.
just party! But don’t worry, the world will still be there on Monday (laughs)!
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’D BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T A MUSICIAN?
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR JAMPACKED SHOWS LIKE THIS?
I’d like to think I'd be a V8 Supercar driver but in reality I don't think I would have gotten too far (laughs)! I love cooking and always have, so my alternative career would have been a chef.
YOU’VE RELEASED A BUNCH OF ALBUMS AND DONE A LOT OF TOURING, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE ROAD? Cooking and eating! I love fishing too and then cooking and eating the fish - seeing a pattern here?! Something else I've been getting into a lot in recent years is renovating little old houses. I'm not great on the tools, but I love having a crack. The reno’s I’ve done so far have been with a builder-mate of mine called Dave Graham – an old school builder who tries his best to teach me, although I’m not sure how good of a student I am, but we get the job done!
FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T BEEN, TELL US ABOUT THE DENI UTE MUSTER AND WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT AT THE EVENT? If you had to pick the biggest party festival of the year it’s the Deni Ute Muster! There's a vibe there that goes beyond just music and camping out. The location, organisers, music and the thousands that travel from everywhere just make it one of the best weekends you’ll ever have. People go there to leave the world behind for a couple days and
We always make sure we hit Deni with our A-Game. We put a lot of thought into which songs are going to get the place jumping. When I do Deni, I’m there to give it everything I’ve got on that stage!
WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOUR SET AT THE DENI UTE MUSTER? The Outlaws is my dream party band. The bands made up of my mates who are great singers and artists in their own right - Drew (McAlister), Mike (Carr), Travis (Collins) and Matty (Cornell) - and we put together a song list of our all-time favourite songs that we like to party to, the songs you’d put on a mix tape and that everybody knows every word of! So it turns into a huge singalong with us and the entire crowd belting it out like there’s no tomorrow!
MOST OF OUR READERS ARE AUSSIE TRADIES AND WOULD BE HUGE FANS OF YOUR MUSIC, WHAT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT DO YOU HAVE FOR OUR TRUE-BLUE TRADESMEN AND WOMEN OUT THERE? Just keep doing what you’re doing, there’s nothing more satisfying than standing back after a hard day’s work and seeing something you’ve built with your own two hands. And then grab a few coldies, turn some music on and enjoy the weekend! Oh, and wear safety glasses! n

H
istory has left its footprints across Central Java and Jogjakarta, areas which are rich in culture and tradition that was inherited from sophisticated Hindu-Buddhist culture, and is known as one of the oldest centers of civilization in the Indonesian archipelago. The legacy of artefacts, monuments and craft represents centuries of religious beliefs and culture. In an effort to ensure the world feel and experience what is Central Java and Jogjakarta, we have unveiled the culture, religions, traditions, history and languages of this beautiful land. The warmth and friendliness of the Indonesian people is evident through the sense of delight locals have towards visitors from all over the world!
DAY ONE On arrival into Cengkareng in West Jakarta, we were escorted to the premium Garuda Lounge for a delicious lunch while waiting for a flight to Yogyakarta, an area that is typically known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. Visiting the Prambanan Temple was the first sight to see on arrival and is said to be one of the most beautiful temples in the world - and with reason! The 9th century temple is dedicated to Trimurti, the expression of God as the creator, preserver and destroyer. The temple compound is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. While at the temple, the Ramayana Ballet Show is a great way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. The show tells the story of the duties of relationships, including the qualities of the ideal wife, king, brother and servant. Gods, mortals, giants, monkeys and beautiful women all come together to tell the colourful story of a courtship punctuated by a kidnapping and battles. Of course, the entertainment is accompanied by a delicious traditional Indonesian dinner and is set out in the open-air under the shadows and among colourful lighting. Once the festivities are over, checking in to the Santika Hotel in Yogyakarta was a luxurious treat. This is one of the largest hotels in Indonesia and is clearly a premium yet very classic hotel,
Ramayana Ballet
Manohara Hotel was the place for resting well-walked feet to conclude this day, and it’s the only hotel located nearby the 9th-century Buddhist sanctuary of Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Manohara provides the opportunity for immersion in Javanese culture, offering trips to ceremonies, temples and antique shops. Private dawn and sunset visits to Borobudur and other archeological monuments in the vicinity are a highlight of a stay at Manohara. You can start your day with a pre-dawn stroll through the dewy grass of a lush tropical garden and solemnly ascend to the top of the Borobudur temple to enjoy an unforgettable sunrise with a breathtaking scenic view.
respective to Javanese artistry and the city's rich cultural heritage. This iconic four-star property is steeped in old-world charm, yet offers all the necessary facilities and conveniences that every modern traveler has come to expect.
DAY two After a lovely night’s rest it was time to rise early for a trip to Kraton Yogyakarta. This is a palace complex located within the city of Yogyakarta and is a special region in Indonesia. The palace is the main seat Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family and it serves as a cultural center for Javanese people,
Village, which is well known for ceramics and pottery and is the largest industrial producers of these products in Yogyakarta. Here, dozens of workshops produce pots and some extraordinary statues and ornaments, including giant dragons and peacocks. containing beautiful displays of the sultanate’s artifacts within the museum. Following lunch with a visit to Imogiri, a cemetery which holds Mataram kings and family’s remains. Next up was a stop at Kasongan
DAY three An earlier start is needed the next day, as we venture to the amazing Borobudur Temple. This temple is highly recognisable and an absolute must-see. The early wake-up call

was worth it, as the view at the top in the morning is breathtaking. After lunch was a trip to the Sangiran Archaeological Museum, then a stop by the ancient batik gallery Dana Hadi. Batik is another specialized skill of the Balinese and this is without a doubt, the best place to witness it. Along with thebatik you will also see the many markets and workshops in the area.

The Aston Hotel was a relaxing hotel to end the day at and was very modern accommodation. The property is situated in Solo's Central Business District and offers beautifully appointed accommodation with an outdoor swimming pool and free WiFi access in all areas of the property.
www.transtasmanmediagroup.com
For day four, a trip to Cetho Temple was in order. The journey to the temple takes you high up in the mountains along a very steep road, but the extraordinary view over the valley and tea plantations is worth it. This is a 15th century JavaneseHindu temple that is located on the western slope of Mount Lawu, sitting at 1495m above sea level on the border between Central and East Java provinces. When this temple was built, Javanese religion and art had diverged from Indian precepts that had been so influential on temples styles during the 8-10th century. This area was the last significant area of temple building in Java before the island's courts were converted to Islam in the 16th century. The distinctiveness of the structure and lack of records of Javanese ceremonies and beliefs of the era make it difficult for historians to interpret the significance of these antiquities.
Following lunch we stopped at the Sukuh Temple in Berjo Village. While still sitting high at 910m above sea level, the temple stretches east to west and is decorated with wayang stone carvings of Hindu origin - a stunning sight that you must see for yourself.
DAY FIVE Following breakfast, we ventured on to Batik Village Laweyan, a village that is 24.83 hectares in size with 2,500 people living within it. Laweyan is the oldest Kampoeng Batik in Indonesia and is one of the central Batik in Solo. This was a beautiful place to stop for lunch before stopping by Sam Poo Kong, also known as Gedung Batu Temple - this the oldest Chinese temple in Semarang in Central Java. You could spend hours walking the streets, admiring the many pavilions and this is another great example of multicultural Indonesia. Everywhere you look you will see Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim
people working and following their individual beliefs comfortably and side-by-side. A trip to Lawang Sewu was up next. This colonial era building is famous as a haunted house and was originally built as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company, although the Semarang City Government has attempted to rebrand it. The building is very well distinguished by its 600 large glass windows. The Novotel Semarang was the accommodation for this night. Set in the central business district, this upscale hotel is a short 14-minute walk from Lawang Sewu and 5km from the Great Mosque of Central Java. A casual restaurant serves a breakfast buffet and there is also a modern restaurant/bar. Other amenities include a nightclub, spa, outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and sauna. A fitness center, a children's play area and meeting rooms are also within the property.
DAY SIX Following breakfast we were on our way to Semarang Harbour to head over to Kura-Kura Island to get to Karimun Jawa. The journey saw us into lunch, so afterwards it was time to head to the island. This is the larger of the chain of islands and is hilly and sometimes steep. The highest peak sits at about 330m, with a dozen smaller peaks nearby. Karimunjawa is also the most populated of the islands and holds the only village situated on a point on the south-west coast of the island. There are many beautiful beaches with clean, white sand, and much of the island has fringing reefs to explore. Kura-Kura Resort was a lovely venue to welcome the end of this journey and it really is a stop between heaven
and earth. Located in the midst of Karimunjawa Archipelago and offering one of the largest lagoons of the area, the 22 hectares of large, extraordinary beauty was exclusively occupied by guests of the resort. The fact that the resort and island are still virtually unknown to mass tourism is almost a blessing, as the feeling of a natural and remote beauty was all ours to endure. Kura Kura Resort has re-opened its doors on June 2008 with a new ownership team and new management after long renovation works that have upgraded the property by enhancing the natural beauty of the island, with a passion for authenticity and attention to the smallest details. Kura Kura Resort offers now 20 spacious and luxurious Pool Villas, including 2 family Pool Villas settled among the beautiful Royal palm trees, and 15 Cottages. While this trip was rich in culture and experience, there is definitely much more to see throughout Indonesia. This majestic country really has something to offer everyone, through its vast cultures, ethnicities, religions and languages. It is invaluable to see that despite Indonesia’s diversity, tolerance and respect for one another is always upheld. Thank you, Indonesia, for a wonderful experience! n

Top Tips for your next
campervan trip HITTING THE ROAD THROUGH AUSTRALIA...

C
onsidering a campervan trip for your next holiday? Taking a trip on four wheels can be a fun and rewarding adventure for the whole family, but it does require some extra planning over a traditional holiday spent in a hotel or resort. Here are some top tips for making sure your next campervan holiday is a great success.
2. Plan an itinerary, or at least a rough route
1. Choose the right campervan
from one destination to the next.
With such a wide range of available vehicles with different setups and capabilities, it can be pretty daunting trying to choose the right campervan for your needs. The best place to start is by considering what type of trip you’re taking. Some people like going into the outback and off the beaten track, whereas others prefer the home comforts of staying in campervan parks with fresh water, electric hook-ups and extra supplies readily available. A lot of companies will offer different classes of vehicles ranging from 2-wheel vans that are strictly on-road vehicles, to serious 4x4s that can tackle a range of off-road environments. WHAT MAKES A
good
life?
(It's not money, fame or even a successful job...)
W
hat makes a good life? What keeps us happy and healthy?
What are our most important life goals? The most common answers to these questions are money, fame, or a successful job. We’re regularly told to ‘lean into work’, but do these goals lead to a healthy, happy and long life?
And if they don’t, what does? Harvard University has been researching this question for a very long time and has accumulated a huge amount of information. Researchers have been running a prospective longitudinal study for 75 years (which is an impressive achievement in itself) and are up to the fourth person leading the study, psychiatrist Robert Waldinger. Every two years since 1938
they’ve touched base with 724 men. They’ve been interviewing them and their families, accessing their medical records, taking their blood, scanning their brains and observing them talking to their families about their deepest concerns over the course of their lives. This information has provided a wealth of knowledge about adult development and what actually happened in these men’s lives, as opposed to an account of their lives based on memory, which

as we all know, can be quite selective and biased. There were two groups of men involved - Harvard College students and boys from troubled, disadvantaged families in Boston. Some of the men became brick layers, lawyers, factory workers, doctors, and alcoholics - one became president of the United States and a few developed schizophrenia. Some climbed the social ladder all the way to the top and others went in the opposite direction.
THE
SURVIVAL GUIDE Mining Families
Practical ways to keep your relationship healthy and your family happy.
MINING FAM ILIES
FOR
By psychologist, Jane Dodding
Your complet e guid happy kids e to healthy relations and a hous ehold that hips , work s.
Of the original men, 60 are still alive and most are in now in their 90’s. And yes, they did eventually begin collecting the same information for women! So from all this information, what have they found that truly does lead to happiness and life satisfaction? It isn’t being rich, working hard or being famous, as many might think. The clear message from this study is that good relationships keep us happier and healthier. The three main findings are:
1. Social connection is important Those who are more socially connected to family, friends and the community are happier, healthier and live longer than those not as well connected. They found that loneliness is toxic and kills.
2. The quality of relationships is important As we all know, you can be lonely in a relationship or in a crowd. It is not about how many friends you have or whether you are married. Having close, good quality relationships is protective (they protect our health), while relationships with high conflict are not good for our health. They found that those most satisfied with their relationships at 50 were the healthiest at 80.
3. Good relationships protect our brains too. Those who had secure relationships (that they could count on in time of need) in their 80’s had sharper memories for longer, compared to those who couldn’t count on others. The main point here is that relationships don’t need to be smooth all the time, but that we know we can count on others in times of need and that they are there for us. These results concur with other research done over the years into happiness and relationships. Martin Seligman has spent many years researching and developing a theory of happiness and wellbeing. Relationships, or connection with
others, have been found to be important for us to flourish. Similarly, John Gottman has spent over 20 years researching what makes relationships successful. He notes that it is the type of connection established, not how often there is conflict, but how conflict is managed. It's possible to predict with 94 per cent accuracy if a couple will stay together, by watching how newlyweds argue.
FIFO and happiness Fly-in, fly-out work can be challenging to relationships. Given the impact this has on our health, happiness and wellbeing, it is worth thinking about how to establish and maintain quality relationships. When we talk about relationships, we often think of partners, family and friends. But it also includes work colleagues and the wider community. One area that I don’t think is talked about as much is the importance of workplace relationships. It is worth investing time and energy to build, enhance and maintain workplace camaraderie as this too has an impact on health and happiness.
As Robert Waldinger says in his Ted Talk, we need to LEAN INTO RELATIONSHIPS.

• Connect regularly • Be available, be present and be attentive
Of course, some would say this wisdom is as old as the hills. Because we're human, though, I think we need constant reminders. So go on - lean in! n

Lifestyle Buddy
We hear about the incredible bond and camaraderie among soldiers, where they have each other’s backs and how this bond helps them cope with being away from their loved ones and stressful experiences. Given that FIFO workers live and work together for extended periods of time (often on remote and isolated work sites) these relationships are important to health and happiness, too.
Taking Care of Business Giving you back the time you don’t have Executive/Personal Assistant With my services you are able to spend your time more productively. You can focus more on business, earn more money or just enjoy more leisure time. Here are some of the things we can help you with.
Business
So is workplace camaraderie a luxury or a necessity? I'd say that if you want to be happy and healthy, it's a necessity. Essentially, the important part about relationships is connection, a sense of belonging and trust. It seems that Dindim the penguin knows what is important to live a happy, healthy life and live longer. He swims thousands of kilometers every year to maintain his relationship with the person he knows he can count on – the man who saved his life.
Build bridges and reach out to estranged family and others. Ongoing conflict can take a terrible toll on all.

A FIFO FATHER’S DAY W
e celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday 4 September. It should be an exciting day for dads, but it can be a minefield of loneliness, isolation and frustration - a time when the distance from family feels massive for those dads who are separated by work on the day that is chosen to recognise them. We are a FIFO family and this year my husband will be home for Father’s Day for the first time in five years. We will treasure this time together, especially as he has missed all family birthdays this year and flew out at 6am on Easter morning. Our family, I am proud to say, is mostly happy, functional and very connected. We are well-practiced in being able to make events special, even when one of us is not physically present. Here are our top five tips for Father’s Day when you are apart...
1.
Eliminate the pressure – There is no perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day. Did you know it isn’t even held on the same day around the world? So, instead of feeling down and miserable all day, why not make the most of it in other ways? If a family member is feeling the pressure, listen to their concerns and help them see it in another way.
2. Make a time to connect in ways
20
Issue 47
you can – Phone, Skype, text, send a video and send pictures. Be funny, be serious, and be thoughtful.
3. Loud and Proud Gratitude – Whether you are the kids, dads or mums, each of you can take turns to share what you are grateful for. What makes dad special? What makes your kids special to you? What is it that mum does that makes dads life easier? 4. Praise and presents – Plan ahead and have notes hidden in luggage and around the house. Have packages of special things ready to be posted so they arrive for the day. Get everyone involved! 5. Move Father's Day – Which is the Sunday closest that you are all together? Why not make that a day filled with celebrating Dad? Most parents I speak to aren’t overly affected by how they feel missing out on special occasions or days – they are more concerned and plagued with elements of guilt, as they worry about how their children may feel. The school had a Father’s Day stall, other parents are planning a big day out and the media hype around Father’s Day is relentless. Here is a secret many parents eventually discover - kids can survive anything and heal, if they have parents who
www.transtasmanmediagroup.com
listen and support them processing their emotions. Children look to their parents to understand the world around them. Instead of making the separation on a specific date a negative one, make it mean something different – the surprise package preparation, making funny videos, planning your own personal Father’s Day when you are all together again. You will be teaching your child how to be resourceful in their thinking and actions when there are life obstacles in the way. How can your family be different and create special celebrations and moments this year for your Father’s Day - or could it be Father’s Month?

Detectives seize $50,000 worth of illegally mined gold near Kalgoorlie
T
he Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Mineral Titles Division has issued a warning to prospectors to ensure they are only working areas for which they have a right. The warning follows a police investigation which has resulted in the seizing of more than a kilogram of gold allegedly unlawfully taken near Kalgoorlie, from an established mining lease on the outskirts of the town. DMP Investigation Services Branch Lead Investigator Kevin Mancini said the best way to support the department in combatting illegal activity was to report it in a timely and comprehensive manner. The following information should be provided where possible:
22

Precise location of the activity (specific GPS coordinates are preferred, or a sufficiently detailed description of the location); Photographs or videos of the activity; Time and date the activity occurred, or at least a time and date range; Details of any vehicles sighted, including vehicle number plates; Details of any persons sighted or spoken to at the time of the incident, including their names and contact details; Specific tenement numbers if applicable; and, Your name and contact details. Mr Mancini said any names or

details will not be released and will remain confidential at all times. “However, it may be necessary for you to give evidence in court if charges have been laid and if you have witnessed the activity actually taking place, he said. Detectives are expected to charge four people over the alleged taking of the gold, worth an estimated $50,000. Gold Stealing Detection Unit (GSDU) officer-in-charge Bill Little said the gold was taken from the lease on June 4, with police receiving information several days later when those involved allegedly attempted to sell it. Det Sgt Little said complaints of illegal mining and trespass onto gold mining
leases were keeping his unit particularly busy, particularly after the recent spike in the gold price. "What we're trying to say to people who are out here prospecting is please make sure you're following the rules," he said. "Don't go where you shouldn't go, because we are actively investigating complaints, as is the Department of Mines and Petroleum." DMP investigates unauthorised mining and other offences under the Mining Act 1978. Reports of unauthorised mining can be sent to the department by emailing ieb@dmp.wa.gov.au n

SAFETY ms
Syste
afety is a difficult department to downsize. While budget cuts need to be met for company survival, safety still needs to be maintained as a fundamental aspect to all tasks. This is where company cultures diverge. Some companies are invested in safety to the point that it drives everything they do, while others are invested only so they meet legislative requirements. As soon as the budgeting axe falls, these companies are more liberal with cuts through the occupational health and safety department, reallocating safety roles to personnel that already have a full schedule. Meanwhile, companies with management driving safety understand that cuts must be well-considered to ensure safety remains the focus, along with development and production. Safety can be expensive and a serious challenge to cost cutting. If done correctly, safety systems can help keep costs down over the life of a project. Having dedicated personnel and open lines of communication are all that is needed in establishing the correct safety requirements. For example, an appropriate safety management system with free-flowing communication and a relevant and thorough risk register with a systematic approach to addressing the hazards. By investing in and maintaining the correct personnel for safety, long term costs are more easily managed and may reduce costs in other areas. Even initial costs can be mitigated by prioritising the risks and working through them when costs allow. The mentality that safety can’t and shouldn’t be incorporated during everyday tasks may make budget cuts harder, but this cost is negligible compared to the cost of a serious incident and investigation. Businesses know this and it’s been proven time and again, sometimes they just need a reminder. SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

BEER SNOB
HE’S BACK AT IT AGAINRY–! BAZ AND HIS BEER SNOBBE
STOUT BY HARGREAVES HILL BREWING COMPANY This is a hefty Stout coming in at 6.2% from Hargreaves Hill Brewing in Yarra Glen, Victoria. Hargreaves began brewing in 2004 and over the years have built a loyal following with their quality beers and the excellent food available at their restaurant. This beer pours up black with a creamy, tan head. The aroma and taste is a dark bitter chocolate, sweet dark fruits, coffee, tobacco, herbal and spicy hops, roasted malt; and slight sweetness from the alcohol. The carbonation and body are perfectly in balance. This is a warming and enjoyable Stout that goes great with a hearty beef stew or game meats - perfect for a cooler night.

ROBUST PORTER BY BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS Bridge Road Brewers of Beechworth in Victoria have been brewing since about 2005 and have a built up a fanbase who love their bold beers. This is a great example of a Robust Porter they seem to improve on every year. It pours up almost black with a touch of red colour on the side of the glass. The aroma is big, with chocolate, mocha, coffee, dark fruits and bread flavours. The taste is almost the same as the smell. The key to this beer is how smoothly it all comes together – there is a great balance of sweet and savoury flavours that are rich in body, yet finish dry enough to make you want to keep drinking more.

With the cool weather slowly departing, we’ve tested some some specialty beers to fit the season. Here’s our top selection for you to try in the coming months…
SUPER CHARGER AMERICAN PALE ALE BY PANHEAD BREWERY This is an excellent example of an American Pale Ale from New Zealand’s Panhead Brewery. This beer took out New Zealand’s 2015 Beer of the Year at the annual SOBA awards and it’s easy to see why as you pour this brilliantly clear golden to light orange coloured beer into a glass and smell it. There is a huge fresh hop aroma that pours out of the glass with mango, grapefruit, lemon, lime, sativa, herbs, tangerine and oranges. The taste follows through the same as the aroma - big, juicy fruit, candy, herb and dank flavours, all mixed together on a solid malt back bone. The carbonation and body are perfect and really help to make this beer dangerously drinkable at 5.7% - get some!
HOPCO NZ PALE ALE BY PIRATE LIFE BREWING This Pale Ale from Pirate Life Brewing features all New Zealand Hops from Tasmanian hop suppliers, Hopco. It pours up golden and bright with a lively head. The smell is all hops with plenty of fruit, herbal and pine aroma. The taste is not as hoppy as the smell and is more balanced with a biscuit/toast malt flavour coming through strong. Mint, pine, lime, lemon and herbal hop flavours are in there as well and the bitterness is assertive but not overpowering. It has a medium body with a dry lingering finish - this is an interesting take on a Pale Ale!
BAZ
NOONER PILSNER BY SIERRA NEVADA This is a take on the classic German Pilsner style from a classic American brewery, Sierra Nevada. Sierra always produce highly drinkable beers that make you want more than one pint and this beer is no exception! It pours up bright and crystal clear with a golden colour and nice looking head and the aroma is floral and spicy hops with light bready malt. The taste is a background of bread, grain and cracker malt flavour and hops are assertively bitter with spicy flavour. The carbonation is medium and the beer finishes dry. Everything is well balanced leaving you wanting another sip great Pils! n
