IT ’S G O O D TO HAVE YOU BACK, T R A D IE S

AUGUST 2016

www.thetradie.com.au

A lot happened last month, but perhaps the most notable is a local Gold Coast tradesmen’s shock win of a $20 million Oz Lotto draw! Imagine it - you chuck $60 on a Quick Pick on a whim thinking, ‘I’ve got to be in it to win it’, then the next day, you get a phone call from Golden Casket explaining you are the sole Division One winner of the jackpot! The unidentified Tradie told the caller to ‘pull the other one’, because he thought it was all one big joke! Turns out it definitely wasn’t a joke and once this long-time tradie bloke realised it he downed his tools and quit there and then, telling Golden Casket that it better not be a joke because he was making his grand exit! Let’s admit it, who wouldn’t do the same thing! Mysterious millionaire Tradie – drinks on you, mate! For the rest of you that still have to work, sit back and get settled into this issue of The Tradie - it’s a damn good one! Once again, it’s filled with sport, laughs and freebies and if you can’t have $20 million, this is a pretty good alternative! Have a good one, Tradies!

PLUMBING AND T

ELECTRICAL

SAFETY A PRIORITY

he Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) recently joined forces with the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) to audit plumbing, drainage and electrical safety at 35 Brisbane and Sunshine Coast construction sites. Together, they conducted checks of almost 400 licensees, with the QBCC issuing more than $2,300 in fines to two individuals for unlicensed plumbing or drainage work. QBCC Commissioner Brett Bassett said this was the first time the QBCC plumbing investigators had carried out a joint audit with ESO inspectors. “Safety must be paramount when it comes to building work and all trades need to be aware that the standard mandatory separation distances for plumbing services, wiring and gas installation must be maintained, Mr Bassett said. He said that all plumbing, drainage and electrical work must be carried out by a licensed person and that the QBCC conducted ongoing audits of construction sites across the state to make sure those working in the industry were playing fairly.

TRADES INDUSTRY PAYS

4.1 DAYS LATE, ON AVERAGE

D

ata recently released from Square shows that tradies are well behind the game, paying on average 4.1 days late. As a nation, Australia ranked bottom of the table behind other nations when it comes to paying invoices. What does this mean for businesses? With billions of dollars caught up in unpaid invoices in Australia, it poses an extra strain on businesses from both a financial and time efficiency perspective. To help take the strain off businesses when it comes to invoicing, Square launched Square Invoices in Australia earlier this year with the aim of giving business owners a faster way to create invoices, so they can invest time back into businesses, allowing them to focus on what they do best. The tool allows sellers to create, customise and issue invoices directly from the Square Register app on a smartphone or tablet, or from Dashboard on their desktop.

NUTS & BOLTS IT’S A BLOKE THING

T

he 2016 It's A Bloke Thing Prostate Cancer Luncheon will be held on 9 August at Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport and is an initiative to raise awareness of prostate cancer within the community. There are many ways you can support this cause, including purchasing raffle tickets, sponsoring the event or by making a tax deductable online donation - every cent raised brings us a step closer to saving another life. Prostate Cancer does not discriminate. Each year in Australia, almost 3,300 men from all walks of life die of prostate cancer. Around 20,000 new cases of Prostate Cancer are diagnosed in Australia every year. As this is often an ‘unspoken’ topic amongst men, in order to reduce these devastating statistics, early detection, treatment and awareness is key. VICTORIA

– THE TOP STATE

FOR NON-RESIDENTIAL

CONSTRUCTION A

ustralian Construction Insights (ACI) has released the Winter 2016 edition of the ACI Construction Monitor. “The Victorian economy is in rare form at the moment. The state has the fastest population growth in the country, the best-performing labour market, the strongest market for new home building and home renovations. ACI’s latest analysis now shows that the state also has the strongest performing nonresidential construction industry in Australia. If Victoria played in the State of Origin, they probably could have won that too,” said Economist Geordan Murray. The Winter edition of the ACI Construction Monitor shows Victoria remained at the top of ACI’s state rankings, while New South Wales has moved back up the table into second place. South Australia has moved up the order into third, while Tasmania is in fourth position and rounds out the top half of the table. The mining trio - the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland, occupy the next three places on the table while the Australian Capital Territory dropped to the unenviable eighth position. “Taking a holistic view of the non-residential construction industry, the fall in work on mining and energy related projects is still the main story, which means a number of engineering construction sectors are weakening. Notably, heavy industry construction, bridges, railways, harbours, as well as infrastructure for electricity generation and transmission and gas pipelines. We are also on the cusp of seeing a lift in public sector investment. The recent state budgets announced by New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland have all allocated funding for numerous major infrastructure projects which will deliver a boost for these states,” concluded Geordan Murray. 8

Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. FI SHEWRING (in reply to Nicole & Meg) “There is a couple of Victorian Tradeswomen trying to get together on our Facebook group, Nicole. You can also check out our website at saltaustralia.org.au - we have tradies nationally and internationally.”

NICOLE HOPLEY “In December 2014 the Department of Immigration and Border Protection released recommendations to relax 457 visa requirements. The recommendations included extending the six month short-term work visa to 12 months, with no obligation to apply for a 457 visa. The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has criticized this change on the grounds that it avoids the 457 visa’s requirement for English language and skills tests and employers would not be required to demonstrate they had first tried to fill job vacancies with Australian workers. What are the intentions or plans to entice students into manual trades and why has there been no push to entice women (a massive untapped resource) into the traditionally male dominated professions?”

GRAHAM DOOLEY “The system as it stands is on a knife edge. Parties stacked with greedy lawyers are proving this country needs real people (closer to human), to run the show!”

MICHAEL PEDLER

MEG SOLEY (in reply to Nicole Hopley) “There’s an organisation called Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT), which are very cool. They have a website and Facebook page and Fi Shewring is their fearless leader. They are based in Woollongong, but she’s been a good support for me too.”

TRADIES

WITH BALLS You may have heard of Sam Moa – professional football player for the Sydney RoosterS - born in Tonga, raised in New Zealand and also kicking goals in the trade world. We sat down with Sam for a chat about what it’s like to balance life as an NRL player and a studying chippy…

YOU’VE GOT A BACKGROUND IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY AS WELL AS AN IMPRESSIVE PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL CAREER WITH THE NRL, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY? I originally had a scholarship from my school on the Gold Coast for football, so I moved to Sydney to start with the West Tigers. I’ve always been around building and I started one of my first jobs in Sydney as a plumber for a few years, which led to a year in a plumbing apprenticeship, but then I had to move to England to play footy so I couldn’t do that anymore. I came back to Australia in 2012 and started my apprenticeship in carpentry, which I’m still doing, along with playing NRL, so it’s challenging.

YOU’VE SACRIFICED BEING AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILY QUITE A BIT FOR FOOTBALL – WILL YOU BE HEADING BACK TO NEW ZEALAND OR IS AUSTRALIA THE PLACE FOR YOU? No, I think I’m going to live here now. My wife is Australian and I was 15 when I moved over as a young teenager to pursue my dreams, so it’s home for me. There is a lot of and sacrifice that goes into football, but a lot of people do the same thing. I also moved to England for four years to play footy, so it’s good to be back in Australia.

WHAT’S IT LIKE PLAYING A-GRADE FOOTY AS A FORWARD FOR THE ROOSTERS IN COMPARISON TO TRADIE LIFE? I’m pretty fortunate in the life that I have to be able to play footy and get paid for it, but on the flip side I don’t get as much time on the tools as other tradies, so I’m behind the eight ball in that regard. When I retire I plan to be on the tools full time, but I don’t physically have time to do that right now. At best, I’ll get one or two days off every couple of weeks and football is my first priority.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRAINING REGIME? I don’t have any crazy PB’s or anything like that, I’m just your average

It depends on whether you win or lose a game! It’s very intense and is a high pressure job. A lot of people see the playing side, but a lot of time goes into it and you’re being watched every second of the day. Being a public figure, you’re always in the spotlight too, as well as being judged on how you play your game – it’s just a never-ending pressure cooker! A lot of people out there have much harder jobs, though, and I’m very grateful for the position I’m in!

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN THE LEAGUE, IN YOUR OPINION? I get a lot of enjoyment out of the physical

FOOTY QUIZ 1. In which country is Rugby League the national sport?

WHAT ARE YOU PLANS AFTER YOU’VE RETIRED FROM THE NRL?

2. Where was Rugby League first played?

Firstly, I have to finish my carpentry apprenticeship and get up to scratch with that. Then hopefully down the line I can get my builders licence and maybe start a small building company, focusing on residential renovating jobs and stuff like that. It’s never appealed to me to run a big company, it’s the small residential side of things I can see myself doing.

3. How many players are needed for a scrum?

A LOT OF OUR TRADIES WOULD LOOK UP TO YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO YOUR FAMILY, WORK AND FOOTY PASSION - WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER TRADIES TRYING TO KICK GOALS? I think work ethic is going to determine how far you can go in whichever career you want to pursue. Tradies work hard, they enjoy each other’s company and have a sense of humour - it’s a great industry to be involved in! I’ve been blessed to have some great mentors in the building industry, so I would say, work hard and surround yourself with good people. T

4. Which coach has had the most wins? 5. What is the biggest winning margin in a grand final? 6. What was the quickest score made in a grand final? 7. What is the lowest scoring game? 8. Who has had the most consecutive premiership wins? 9. Who won the Clive Churchill medal twice? 10. With what national team did Ruben Wiki make 55 appearances?

ANSWERS

WHAT’S IT LIKE IN THE LOCKER ROOM WHEN PLAYING IN THE NRL PREMIERSHIP?

side of training and playing, which is appealing to me. It’s a game I’ve grown to love and am very fortunate to be able to play and get paid for it. It’s an amazing job!

1. Papua New Guinea 2. England 3. Up to six 4. Wayne Bennet, with seven grand final wins 5. Manly 40 – Storm 0 in 2008 6. 2.08 seconds by Canberra Raiders player David Furner in 1994 7. Parramatta 4 – Canterbury/Bankstown 2 in 1986 8. St George Illawarra with 11 from 1956 – 1966 9. Bradley Clyde in 1989 and 1991 10. New Zealand

player, but training-wise it’s pretty demanding and a lot of people don’t realise it. I’m at the office (at training) around 8am and I won’t leave until 4pm, so it’s a long day on every training day. We’ll do video sessions, recovery, field sessions, and stuff like that, so it’s time consuming. At the end of the training day I also have to go to TAFE for around 4 hours, so it becomes a long and draining week! I also just had a young daughter a few months ago, so it’s extremely challenging trying to be a good dad who’s around to help out.

9 things MORE IMPORTANT

THAN

MONEY

...in business When running a business, we all know the value of having plenty of money – especially cash flow! But I bet you know of (or at least have heard of) people who have grown businesses with practically no capital and went on to make fortunes. How is this possible? Written by Jon Mailer, CEO and Founder of PROTRADE United.

W

ell, there are actually some things that are more valuable than capital that can lead to your success:

1. TIME. Time is more valuable than capital; time you set aside is 18

AUGUST 2016

not to be wasted and not to be given away. Time you set aside to invest in an enterprise that brings value to the marketplace with the hope of making a profit is also important. How valuable is time? Time properly invested is worth a fortune. Time wasted can be a devastation. Time

www.thetradie.com.au

invested can perform miracles, so invest your time wisely.

2. DESPERATION. I had a client, Mike, whose first major investment in his new business was desperation. He said, "My kids are hungry, I’ve got to make this work. If this doesn't work, what will I do?" So he invested $100 in his business selling a product he believed in. The $100 was to buy a few fliers so he could make a sale at retail, collect the money, then buy the product wholesale to deliver back to the customer. Desperation can be a powerful incentive when you say “I must”.

3. DETERMINATION. Determination says “I will”. First Mike said, "I must find

a customer" - desperation. Secondly he said, "I will find someone before this first day is over" – determination. Sure enough, he found someone. He said, "If it works once, it will work again", but then the next person said, "No." Now what must he invest?

4. COURAGE. Courage is more valuable than currency. If you've only got $100 and a lot of courage, I'm telling you, you've got a good future ahead of you. Courage to keep going in spite of the circumstances is powerful. Humans can do the most incredible things when, no matter what happens, they persevere. Courage, not because of, but in spite of. Now,

9. PERSONALITY.

once Mike has made 3 or 4 sales and is revved up, here's what takes over…

You've just got to spruce up and sharpen up your own personality. You've got plenty of personality, just get it developed to where it is effective every day and effective no matter who you talk to - whether it is a child or whether it is a business person - whether it is a rich person or a poor person. Have a unique personality that is at home anywhere.

5. AMBITION. "Wow! If I can sell 3, I can sell 33. If I can sell 33, I can sell 103!" Mike is now pumped by his own dreams of the future.

6. FAITH. Now he begins to believe he's got a good product, that this is probably a good company. He then starts to believe in himself. Mike, single father, 2 kids, no job. "My gosh, I'm going to pull it off!" His self-esteem starts to soar. These valuable investments are unmatched; money can't touch them. What if you had a million dollars and no faith? You'd be poor. Now here is the reason why he’s a millionaire today…

7. INGENUITY. Putting your brains to work. Up until now, you've probably put about one tenth of your brainpower to work. What if you employed the other 9/10? You wouldn’t believe what could happen. Humans can come up

with the most intriguing things to do. Ingenuity. What's ingenuity worth? A fortune. It is far more valuable than money. All you need is a $100 and plenty of ingenuity; figuring out a way to make it work, make it work, make it work.

8. HEART AND SOUL. What is a substitute for heart and soul? It's not money. Money

can't buy heart and soul. Heart and soul is more valuable than a million dollars. A million dollars without heart and soul means you have no life. You are ineffective. But heart and soul is like the unseen magic that moves people. It moves people to buy, moves people to make decisions, moves people to act, moves people to respond.

The qualities on this list are more valuable than money. With $100 dollars and the list above, the world is yours. It belongs to you, whatever piece of it you desire, whatever development you wish for your life, the tools are there. This is capital, but the kind of capital that has more value than money and that can secure your future and fortune. Remember, you lack none of these resources. Run a supeR Race with youR RetiRement savings You want to be leading into the final straight, not just at the starter’s pistol. You can’t control the future, but Cbus has been a great performer over the years.* We’ve all been there. Poured over the form guide. Worked up the perfect box trifecta. It’s a sure thing in the race that stops a nation. Or maybe you just picked a random horse from your mate’s sweep. The race starts. Straight out of the gate, your horse surges to the front of the pack. Cue the groan.

Cbus has generated an annual average return of 9.16%† over the 32 years it has been around. Now that’s Melbourne Cup winning form.

The Melbourne Cup is run over more than three kilometres. It’s a long race. And there’s not much hope of winning from such an early lead. If you’re in the sweep, you might get your money back for second last place at least. And for Mr Box-Trifecta, he already knows the race is as good as done. Even though you probably think about sport more often than superannuation (and who wouldn’t), it can offer a similar lesson.

It’s a bit early to break out the Spring form guide. But it’s never too early to get your head in the super game.

COMPETE THE WHOLE RACE 2015/16 was very challenging for super returns. Despite big falls in shares in August, January and again in June, the Growth (Cbus MySuper) investment option delivered a very positive 5.47%† for the year. While lower than the double digit returns of late, there are also super fund members who will see investment losses this year. This one-year return is that great jump straight out of the gate. But it’s the whole race that generally matters most.

WORK INJURIES

AIN’T NO FUN Tradies National Health Month aims to raise awareness of the risks posed to those who work in trade occupations. While we’ve seen improvements, Australia’s trade industry continues to have among the highest health and safety issues of any sector. Time off work due to poor health and injury has a significant impact on business, communities, the health system and the economy—and this impact will grow if we don’t take steps to change behaviour. Tradies’ health must be everyone’s priority! We spoke to a Tradie who found out first-hand what it’s like to go through a work-related injury… HOW DID THE ACCIDENT OCCUR? I was in the second year of my apprenticeship at the age of 34 and was using a big demo saw above my head. I was twisting my body while holding it to cut a brick wall and aggravated a lower vertebrae. I was fine for about an hour, then about two hours later my back got really sore and I told one of builders I was going home. Later that afternoon it got really bad and I could hardly walk next day, so I took the day off and went and saw a physio.

HOW DID IT IMMEDIATELY AFFECT YOU? I could only move my body very slightly and had lots of lower back pain and stiffness.

WHAT DID RECOVERY INVOLVE? The physio told me I’d need to take 8-12 weeks off work but that it was quite a

common injury. They said I’d need to get work cover involved and talk to my employer, so it was a bit scary at first but I spoke to my boss and went through the insurance process. As for recovery, it involved some gentle stretching and pelvic floor stretching to try and strengthen the area. The physio was quite reassuring, but I still couldn’t go back to work straight away. I tried going back after about a month and used a jackhammer straight away at the time it as what had to be done! I don’t know if that aggravated my back or if I wasn’t ready to go back to work, but I could still feel it, so took another month of and then slowly went back. I was off for about two months in total.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU COULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY TO AVOID THE INJURY? Yeah, I should

AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST SMOKO TOOL

THE

AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST SMOKO TOOL

THE

Peter Axford is a successful landscaper from Rowville in Victoria; he’s also the brains behind these epic granite bike creations. We sat down with Peter to find out more about his interesting talent… TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE? I started my landscape apprenticeship in 1985, doing a 4 year apprenticeship for Rob Hanke in the East Doncaster and Templestowe areas. I learnt all aspects of landscaping, but mainly construction and earthworks. Because Templestowe is built on rock and shale, I spent long hours on a jack hammer and crow bar as an apprentice. During my apprenticeship I had lots of small weekend jobs, which helped me build a client base for my bigger plan to become qualified and then step into my own business. I had a business partner the same age who I met through my apprenticeship and we spent the next 30 years successfully working together, to a point where we had over 40 employees, a garden supplies and civil landscape company, and our landscape business. It was always exciting and rewarding but a serious handful, too. Within that time we did many exciting projects, including constructing a granite tile mural of Box Hill. Coolabah has won many awards over the years in the domestic and commercial world and after many years of domestic works and many fantastic clients, I moved into the commercial world. We now work with Melbourne's top commercial builders and landscape architects and we also enjoy designing with our in-house designer Francois, constructing many items for our school works where imagination is limitless to what we can build.

HOW DID GRANITE SCULPTURES COME ABOUT, AMONG YOUR CREATIONS? We are always trying to create unique pieces of play equipment

WHAT OTHER CRAZY CREATIONS HAVE YOU MADE FROM GRANITE, OR SIMILAR? We are in the process of making a full on granite rock outdoor lounge room, including a couch, four recliners, coffee table, TV set with legs and antennas, and an old retro lampshade sitting proudly next to the couch. This will create a fantastic outdoor play space for children and will double as an outdoor classroom. The Flintstones car is another item being made for a school, where we will replicate the iconic car from the ‘60s cartoon show. This will be an impressive piece when complete.

for our school clients and the natural play option is fantastic and the kids are fascinated with the textures and tactile feeling of the rocks. The first creation we made was a granite rock horse for a private school in Ringwood, where the client allowed us to construct many more items, such as granite motorbikes, granite rock retro couches and a TV station made purely from granite rocks.

HOW ARE THE BIKES AND TRUCKS MADE? We have our rock supplier available for us to select each rock in preparation for the work. The granite kitchens and couches are put together in the actual rock yard, where we prebuild the work and number each rock. It is then dismantled and transported by a tandem truck on site. Our 8 tonne excavator with a rock grab then reconstructs the item on site. In terms of the granite rock sculptures like motorbikes, where cutting of the rock is required, a demolition saw and large diamond blade cut through the

rock to create the shape of the bike, then a smaller diamond saw gets the final finish. The motorbike accessories like the wheels and handlebars are all sourced from motorbike wreckers. The engine is a shovel head replica etched onto a 20mm piece of granite tile from a Melbourne-based company. There are 3 x 50mm solid steel gal poles core drilled and ChemSet into the base of the bike, ready to be set in concrete on site. The bike takes about one week for one man to complete in the factory. It’s then transported on site where the crew have prepared a 600mm deep foundation where the bike is positioned with an excavator and propped to the correct level with 25mpa of concrete poured. As a final touch and for playground safety regulations, we surround the bike in a black rubber flexible surface to look like a roadway. The advantage of our granite rock playground equipment is that once the item has installed it will last forever, eliminating constant maintenance and cost issues.

Also we have an F1 racing car which is about 3m long, complete with wheels and a rear spoiler in the pipeline .

THEY'RE PRETTY UNIQUE - IS THE PRICE TAG STEEP? The prices range depending on which item is selected and site access to install, but basic costs are a granite rock couch supplied and installed starting from $2,000, to the bikes, kitchens and trucks ranging from $5,000 - $7,000, fully installed.

HOW HEAVY IS THE AVERAGE BIKE SCULPTURE? About 800kg.

WHAT'S THE TRICKIEST PART OF THESE PROJECTS? Each item has its own set of challenges from diamond cutting to installing all the accessories, to transport to installation. Because we are dealing with such a heavy and solid rock the entire process is a bit of a challenge. T

OF THE MONTH On an ordinary day in heaven… “Alright, everyone,” St. Peter said… “Men, form two lines - one for those who dominated their women while on earth and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women.” They do as they’re told, then Peter looks up and sees the line of men who were dominated by their women is 100 miles long and in the line of men who dominated their women, there was only one man. Peter is mad! “You men should be ashamed of yourselves. God created you in his image and you were all whipped by your mates! Only one of you has made God proud during your journey on earth - learn from him!” Then, addressing the solitary man, Peter asked him to tell his peers how he managed to be the only one in that line. “I’m not sure,” he said... “My wife told me to stand here.”

The magazine bit holder LiftUp electric is the latest development in the successful slimVario product line: a compact magazine bit holder which accommodates 6 common slimBits. This makes this tool the ideal companion for use on the move for any electrician. Pressing both rockers extends the bit depot out of the magazine and provides all slimBits in a fanned-out presentation, so removing and re-inserting individual slimBits is child's play. The proven ClicFix bit holder securely accommodates all the bits, locks them reliably and makes this tool a magazine which is suitable for universal use. The turnable cap is a further advantage - the required axial force can be built up by vigorously pressing the cap and the second hand is used to turn it along the longitudinal axis. The magazine provides the maximum possible safety. In addition to the individually tested slimBits, the magazine is also completely VDE-GS certified, meaning twice the safety for users. In addition to their main application in the electrical field, these bits can also be used for mechanical fastening.

BUSBY MAROU

This local duo from Rockhampton are known for their epic guitar riffs and expressive lyrics and they’re about to hit the road after almost a year away from touring. We spoke with Tom Busby about what it’s like being the other half of Busby Marou… YOU AND JEREMY ORIGINALLY CROSSED PATHS IN ROCKHAMPTON – CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS MUSICIANS? We’re both Rocky boys, born and raised, and we went to different schools but are both from musical families. Jeremy is part Torres Strait Islander and the culture is strong in his background, so there is a lot of singing and playing guitar with his family until the sun comes up - that’s where his ability comes in. We met up after school once through friends and clicked instantly, then we started playing at the pubs in Rocky, then branching out to Gladstone, Middlemount, and a heap of other mining towns in Queensland. We were sort of just the local band for a good couple of years - just young fellas on guitars, a bit different to what everyone else was. We did a mix of originals and covers and had heaps of fun doing it. We were always writing songs from the start and just had some lucky breaks and people liked what we were doing. There was no outer influence from the big bad world and in hindsight it was probably a really important part of our success.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT MAKING MUSIC THAT GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING? It makes me feel good no matter how down or stressed I am. I could rock up to a gig and really not want to sing at all – it might be nerves, or whatever - but as soon as the first cord strums it’s probably the most I feel at home. 28

nephews, so I love spending time with them and friends too. Either that or fishing on the boat, which is where Jeremy always is - out on the boat! Jeremy lives in Central Queensland, so he spends a lot of time on Great Keppel Island or on the water when we’re not on the road. We were recording an album in Melbourne and it just didn’t feel right – it sounds great with a big producer, but we had to make sure we did it right, so we flew Jeremy to Keppel Island to record three songs and a few others he wrote while on the boat. We haven’t lost touch.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’D BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T DOING MUSIC? I used to be a lawyer and hated it. All my family are builders and civil engineers and all worked in mines and in the transport industry. I used to do it in spare time too, but I really wanted to be a sports journalist or sports lawyer – a real Jerry Maguire (laughs)! I used to play music on the weekends and then it just took over.

YOU’VE RECORDED WITH SOME GREAT ARTISTS AND PERFORMED AT SOME AWESOME AUSSIE FESTIVALS, BUT WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE ROAD? My wife and I have an 11 month old daughter and that has just started to become fun. I have a big family with 31 nieces and

YOU’RE PERFORMING AT THE DENI UTE MUSTER SOON, WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM YOUR GIG? We haven’t played for about a year because we’ve been working hard on the new album, so there’ll be heaps of new material and we will be working hard to sound good. From what I know we will be bringing the band with us too, so I think we’ll have some new music to share with everyone. We can’t wait!

HOW DO YOU AND JEREMY PREPARE FOR JAM-PACKED SHOWS LIKE THIS? Very loosely (laughs)! Jeremy doesn’t own a pair of shoes - he wears thongs everywhere and he just seems to have never been stressed in his life, so it could be the biggest gig in world and we just don’t stress too much get up there and let it happen! Being pioneers in the welding game, CIGWELD were one of the first to launch VRD – Voltage Reduction Device technology within welding inverter based units. What does this mean you ask? Well simply put, it’s a safety feature preventing electrocution when you’re not arced up! It reduces the open

(i.e. when changing electrodes), to all but eliminate the potential of electrocution. VRD is covered by both AS60974.1 and AS1674. The Transmig 165ST was reviewed by the almighty “KNOCKA” from The Tradie in the last issue who was very impressed with the unit: “It’s safe to say, I didn’t want to return this baby and it’s on my Christmas wish list – a musthave for my collection over the making do with for too many years. It also comes with a 3 year warranty, making it even more desirable! This is a beast of a welder, so do yourself a favour and get your hands on one too!” It’s safe and exciting to say that whether you’re a professional efficient machine to get your jobs done well or simply a DIY enthusiast, you can’t go past the latest Transmig Series by CIGWELD – We’ve got welding and cutting covered! DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG Dial Before You Dig is a national community service designed to prevent damage and disruption to the vast underground pipe and cable networks around Australia. The free Dial Before You Dig service should always be a tradies first point of call when excavating. Damaging these networks can result in large financial penalties, injury and in the worst-case scenario, death. Even the simplest domestic excavation work carried out by a tradie can lead to damage. Lodging an enquiry is simple. All excavators should advise Dial Before You Dig of their intended worksite by lodging an enquiry online at 1100.com.au. They can also lodge the enquiry by calling 1100 during business hours or by accessing our mobile web service on any mobile device. There is also an iPhone app for iPhone users. Details of the enquiry are then sent to infrastructure owners with assets in the vicinity of the project. On the Dial Before You Dig website you will find the Safe Excavation page which contains training resources, our Best Practice documents and links to a range of other useful information. If you would like further details about our service or how we can help, please visit 1100.com.au.
