We will also be checking out some of the highlights of Dublin Theatre Festival, arguably one of Dublin’s most loved festivals. Pat Liddy uncovers some interesting stories about the Royal College of Surgeons.

Leinster - The East Coast Province Leinster is the most easterly of the four provinces of Ireland, and is the most populated with the city of Dublin at its heart. The province is made up of counties Dublin, Louth, Meath, Carlow, Kildare, Wicklow, Laois, Offaly, Longford, Westmeath, Kilkenny and Wexford. These counties have a host of historic monuments, a picture perfect coastline and cities and villages thronged with things to do and see.

County Dublin is the home to the capital city. Dublin is the administrative, cultural, and economic capital of the country. It is one of the most exciting places to visit with a thriving arts, musical and theatrical nightlife.

All roads lead to Saint Stephen’s Green in the very centre of the city. You’ll find it at the top of Grafton Street, with Trinity College down at the other end. And just around the corner you can stroll around the cultural quarter of Temple Bar between Dame Street and the river that, famously, divides the North and the South of the city.

If you want to escape to the country without

GPO, Dublin actually leaving the city, then you can head north to Howth Head, or south to the charming and culturally vibrant villages of Dalkey and Killiney. Half an hour on the DART train will take you from the centre of the city to what feels like the heart of the country.

County Meath formerly known as the Royal County is the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland who were based around the Hill of Tara. Meath is also one of the most archaeologically important counties on the island with its Neolithic sites at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. These ancient religious sites (built before the Pyramids) have been excavated and restored in recent years making them some of the busiest visitors’ attractions in the country. The sites are all only less than an hour’s drive out of Dublin and are accessible

The county also features the site of the Battle of the Boyne which was one of the great battles fought on Irish soil. For horse racing lovers, Meath has the wonderful Fairyhouse Racecourse, and there is also summertime horse racing on Laytown Beach.

County Wicklow has several world famous sites and attractions, from the Glendalough monastic settlement with its Abbey and Round Tower, to the fabulous Powerscourt House and Gardens. The Wicklow Hills rising majestically over the county and the seaside town of Bray are just some of its many attractions.

Offaly is situated in the centre of Ireland.

Nestling between the Shannon River to the West and the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the East, Offaly is one of the lowest lying counties in the country. Any visitor should travel along the Royal Canal where one can experience a peace and tranquillity little known in our busy world.

Kildare is the home of the National Stud, Newbridge Silverware and Maynooth College.

Couple all these with Mondello Park motor racing, Naas horse racing course and Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park and there is something for everyone.

Westmeath is a county which has at its heart the town of Athlone which is exactly situated in the middle of Ireland. It is home to the RTÉ

All-Ireland Drama Festival, the oldest pub in Ireland and some of the finest golfing, fishing and health spas on offer throughout the land.

Louth is known as “the wee county” as it is the

smallest county in Ireland but what it lacks in land mass it makes up for in places to see. It is the home of the Cooley Mountains, the Boyne river which is famous for its salmon fishing and the beautiful Carlingford area. If it is a leisurely drive you seek Louth is the place to go. Carlow is where you will find three of Ireland’s key national walking routes – the South Leinster, the Barrow and the Wicklow Ways. Carlow is blessed with hundreds of miles of excellent and varied walking trails, and hosts a wonderful arts festival every June.

Laois is where you can try your hand at a

Kilkenny City was voted Ireland’s Top Tourism Town for 2013 by Failte Ireland which is Ireland’s main tourism body. It was voted Cleanest Town in Ireland at end of 2013 by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), and has also been voted 9th friendliest city in the world by readers of Conde Nast Traveler. The city was in addition voted Most Friendliest City in Europe. Couple all these awards with a huge countywide cultural heritage trail and it is a must see destination for any visitor.

Longford is situated in the basin of the River Shannon and the upper catchment area of the River Erne. It is ideally located in the heart of the Lakelands region within easy reach of many stunning and historic tourist attractions. The county’s accessibility to many of Irelands main towns and cities make it a prime location as a holiday base.

Finally, Wexford is famous for its glorious sandy coastline and together with County Waterford is known as ‘The Sunny South East’. You can also visit the oldest lighthouse in Europe which stands on the Hook Peninsula.

irls and Dolls, the stunning debut play from Lisa McGee, Writer/Producer of smash hit TV comedy Derry Girls will play a limited run at The Gaiety Theatre from 11th-15th September.

Set in Derry in 1980 it features Emma and Clare, two best friends who are thick as thieves skipping, chasing, playing in the park. But the terrible events of that summer would tear their lives apart, binding them together forever. As adults they obsessively replay past events and incidents.

For Emma and Clare it was the summer they met at the swings, the summer they built a treehouse and the summer a young mother and her infant daughter moved

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 24th September to 7th October 2018 and is a celebration of history with over 140 free history events for the general public including talks, walks, seminars, exhibitions and films taking place in venues around Dublin including libraries and Dublin Castle.

T

his is the biggest free history festival in the country which last year attracted 7,500 people at 90 history events. It is a must-attend festival for anyone who loves history and enjoys reading, researching and watching history.This year they have added many new event partners broadening the reach and diversity of the exciting festival programme.

This year’s speakers include Michael Palin, Anne Applebaum, Helen Rappaport, David McCullagh, Diarmaid Ferriter, Catriona Crowe, Frank McDonough, Pamela Cox, Clare Mulley and many more.

Michael Palin Former Monty Python stalwart and much-loved television globe-trotter Michael Palin will bring to life the world and voyages of HMS Erebus, from its construction in the naval dockyards of Pembroke, to the part it played in Ross’s Antarctic expedition of 1839–43, to its abandonment during Franklin’s ill-fated Arctic expedition, and to its final rediscovery on the seabed in Queen Maud Gulf in Canada in 2014.

To shed light on one of history’s greatest exploration stories, he has travelled to various locations across the world – Tasmania, the Falklands, the Canadian Arctic – to search for local information, and to experience at first hand the terrain and the conditions that would have confronted the Erebus and her crew. launched his policy of agricultural collectivization—in effect a second Russian revolution—which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms.The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem. In Red Famine, Anne Applebaum argues that those Ukrainians perished not because they were accidental victims of a bad policy but because the state deliberately set out to kill them. Anne Applebaum is a columnist for The Washington Post, a Professor of Practice at the London School of Economics, and a contributor to The New York Review of Books. Her previous books include Iron Curtain and Gulag: a History, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.

Helen Rappaport 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the murder of the Russian Royal family in Ekaterinburg after the Bolshevik Revolution.The myth of the secret escape of one of the Romanov princesses has

been immortalised in plays, books and films but the question of how and why the Royal family were left to their fate at the hands of the revolutionaries remains a fascinating tale still to be fully explored. A decade in the making, Helen Rappaport’s book, The Race to Save the Romanovs includes a range of new and unseen sources from the archives including letters, diaries and telegrams. Free from conspiracy theories, it offers the most revealing, detailed and definitive account of the Romanov family and their horrifically cruel deaths. Dr Helen Rappaport is a Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling historian, as well as one of a very few Russianspeaking female historians in the UK. She is a historical consultant for the TV drama series Victoria and has written for The Times.

The Festival of History which features over 140 free events will also feature talks on the Third Reich, Hitler’s women pilots, women's suffrage, the sinking of the RMS Leinster, Karl Marx and Ireland, the origin of county colours, History in/of Gaming, “Sass Mouth Dames” women in Hollywood in 1930s, Dubliners who died in the First World War, Servants, shopgirls and sexworkers, Exploring the History podcast, Christy Dignam on Aslan’s Feel No Shame album, Dublin’s tenement history,Women in Pawnbroking in 19th and 20th centuries.The festival will also feature seminars on Viking history, 20th century Dublin architecture, and the impact of WWI on sport in Ireland.

Ireland’s Annual Music Showcase and Conference Hard Working Class Heroes have announced the 50 acts that will make the line-up for HWCH18. HWCH made the annual call for bands to apply in June and had a huge response. Over 600 bands applied via First Music Contact’s platform Breaking Tunes and the bands were chosen independently by top international and Irish music industry professionals.

Last year HWCH reduced the number of bands showcasing to 50 and highlighted the need for acts to have a development plan and an eye on international activity. The success of this move resulted in a record number of Irish acts being selected for overseas showcase events in 2017 including Eurosonic, SXSW, The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, Primavera Pro and more. HWCH hopes to see the same success from this year’s acts, 37 of which have not showcased before.

The live showcases will take place on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th September across five city centre venues - The Workman’s Club, Tramline, Tengu, Doyles and The Grand Social. On Thursday 27th

September, the opening night, a targeted networking social event will take place in the Chocolate Factory where all the international delegates will have the chance to meet with their Irish counterparts and artists attending the HWCH conference.

This will be Ireland’s largest gathering of bookers, labels, managers, music supervisors, radio folk and journalists from around the world and here at home. The weekend will see a mixture of workshops, discussions and panels which are growing in importance year on year for artists across all levels to meet with people one-to-one who can make a difference. HWCH annually brings Ireland to the world and the world to

Ireland over one weekend.

Since its inception in 2003, the festival has showcased many of Ireland’s bestknown acts including Maria Kelly, Saint Sister, Choice Music Prize winners Rusangano Family,Villagers, 2013's breakthrough act Hozier along with Girl Band, Ailbhe Reddy, Delorentos, Soulé, Jape, Coronas, Pleasure Beach, Talos, Le Boom, Otherkin and many more.

Currently running is an initiative between HWCH and media partners RTÉ 2FM which will see all fifty HWCH 18 acts being playlisted on 2FM between now and the festival.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IN IRELAND

B

efore the mid-18th century, while physicians were properly trained and licenced by recognised medical institutions, surgeons usually were not. They were commonly called barbersurgeons and were often more gifted with their tonsorial skills rather than with the surgeon’s knife. Following calls for the foundation of a College of Surgeons for Ireland (this had already happened in England in 1745) a meeting of the Dublin Society of Surgeons took place in a tavern in 1780. They petitioned the king of England to release them from their “preposterous union with the Company (guild) of Barbers”. Four years later their efforts were rewarded with the foundation of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) by a royal charter of King George III. Interestingly the first meeting of the RCSI took place in the boardroom of a maternity hospital; the Rotunda Hospital, which today is still operating at the top of O’Connell Street.

The college’s first schools of anatomy and surgery were opened at the rear of Mercer’s Hospital in 1789 and it would take another 21 years before the college could move to its present premises at the corner of St Stephen’s Green and York Street. It was built on a former Quaker burial ground. By 1827 it was extended to its present frontage on St Stephen’s Green. Above the columns, inside the central pediment, although worn by age and

weathering, the Royal Coat of Arms is clearly visible. England is represented by the lion, Scotland by the unicorn and Ireland by the harp set into the central shield.

A close inspection of the façade of this elegant classical building will reveal scores of bullet holes on the pillars and the stone work.

Hardly surprising given that the premises had been occupied by over one hundred Irish insurgents during the Rising of April 1916.

British Army machine gunners had positioned themselves on the roofs of nearby buildings and occasionally let fly at the college. After a week, following the surrender of the rebel leadership elsewhere in the city, the little garrison inside

the College were ordered to lay down its arms.

Curiously the rebel who, under a white flag, brought the order of surrender, was herself a medical person, later to become a renowned midwife, Elizabeth O’Farrell. Another famous woman associated with this event was the second-in-command of the garrison, Countess Markievicz, who two years later became the first woman to be elected to the British parliament. The RCSI admitted its first woman to a licentiate in 1886 (eighteen years before Trinity College admitted its first female students).

War impacted on the college again when an armed guard was put in place during the Civil

War of 1922/23 and during the Second World War a public air-raid shelter was constructed in the basement.

Internationally celebrated surgeons have been members of the RCSI. Arguably the most well-known was Sir William Wilde, the father of writer, Oscar Wilde. He was an eminent eye and ear surgeon (as well as an author himself on medicine, archaeology and folklore) and was the founder of St Mark’s Ophthalmic Hospital which in 1895 became the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital. It currently functions on Adelaide Road. Other outstanding members included Francis Rynd who in 1844 invented the world’s first hypodermic syringe which allowed doctors to deliver drugs directly to target areas within the body. John Houston was the first doctor in Ireland to pioneer the use of the microscope in medicine (1840s). In 1814, long before the introduction of X-rays, Abraham Colles was the first to accurately describe the diagnosis for a common wrist fracture that today carries his name; the Colles Fracture.

Perhaps the most curious invention to come from a member of the RCSI was the specialised amputation saw developed in 1851 by the aptly if not grimly named Richard Butcher.

Butcher didn’t believe in placing patients under anaesthetic as he preferred their bodies to be rigid (with tension, fear and pain, no doubt).

In any case, the first operation in Ireland using anaesthesia had only taken place four years earlier under RCSI professor of anatomy, John McDonnell. Another medical device improvement was an endoscope constructed in 1865 by RCSI urologist, Francis Cruise, who performed some of the world’s first endoscopic treatments successfully in living patients.

Space in the main college building was never going to be enough and gradually old tenement houses along York Street were purchased from the 1950s onwards and their sites rebuilt to provide this extra accommodation. Only

opened this year, the latest structure, the Academic Building, is a triumph of modern architecture providing 10 storeys (three underground) of additional space. York Street itself is a narrow road and potentially such a large building could have substantially darkened it but the clever use of a special reflective glass actually brightens the surroundings.

Today, the extended campus of the Royal College of Surgeons, is the largest single medical training institution in the country, and has an enrolment of around 3,400 Irish and international students and post-graduates.

The 2018 Dublin Theatre Festival features a tantalising selection of brand new work, fresh versions of classic plays and adventurous international productions, created by renowned artists as well as emerging voices, and productions aimed at children, young people and adults.

The programme is led by two timely productions from the US as part of a strong international programme which includes work from Australia, Belgium, Poland, Netherlands and the UK and a vibrant Irish programme featuring work from a number of leading theatre makers.

From intimate encounters in found spaces to the grand physical and emotional scale of Shakespearean drama, ballet and opera, there are portraits of individuals corrupted by power, testimonies from dissenting voices and challenges to received narratives. These theatrical experiences are all connected by one thing, the need for an audience to gather together in a shared time and space. DTF is a festival for Dublin, a communal celebration of theatre from Ireland and across the world and everyone is invited to be part of it.

Highlights from the line-up include: Two productions from the US: Obie-award winning Elevator Repair Service who took DTF by storm with Gatz returns with a new play, Everyone’s Fine with Virginia Woolf and 600 HIGHWAYMEN’s response to the current polarised social and political climate of the US, The Fever.

Oscar-nominated Irish actress, Ruth Negga, makes her Gate stage debut in the title role of Hamlet, joined by a cast of Ireland’s finest actors.

Directed by award-winning director Yaël Farber Shakespeare’s iconic story of politics, vengeance, madness and murder is reimagined in a groundbreaking, visionary Gate Theatre production for today’s audience.

Enda Walsh directs Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle for Irish National Opera, with acclaimed mezzosoprano Paula Murrihy returning home for a rare Irish performance, alongside Joshua Bloom.

From Decadent Theatre a major revival of Marina Carr’s award winning breakthrough play The Mai with a cast led by Derbhle Crotty.

INTROSPECTIVE/RETROSPECTIVE at Gallery Zozimus

This September Gallery Zozimus will host Introspective/Retrospective by Jim Turner from 13th September until 29th September.

Introspective/Retrospective captures the extraordinary breadth of Jim Turner’s creativity, skill and experimentation as a ceramic artist, and archives his substantial contribution to contemporary ceramics in Ireland.

Known as a warm and generous craftsman, his modest disposition cloaks vast knowledge and a long list of accomplishments both at home and abroad. He has known clay all his life. It is part of his DNA. Jim’s father ran Abbotsbury Pottery in Dorset and he played with clay since early childhood. He studied Ceramic Sculpture and Design in Camberwell College (he was tutored by Hans Cooper and Lucie Rie).

Jim has always thrived on experimentation, combining an array of firing and glazing techniques, where surface is his prime avenue of investigation. “My work is informed by the landscapes and other experiences where I find myself,” says Jim, “but, I am as influenced by the Peninsula formation of Sheep’s Head in West Cork, as by the anonymous Minoan potters of

Crete, through to the Futurists, Constructionists and the engineering feats of Frei Otto.”

Jim’s dry glaze pods and tall trophy forms incorporate multiple layers of glazes and slips, which result in outstanding textured surfaces in blues, pinks, and purple hues.

He will also be showing collaborative work, for many years he has partnered with his wife Etain Hickey at Rossmore Country Pottery to create highly coloured functional and decorative pots. Throughout his career, Jim has pushed the boundaries of scale by creating larger-than-life sculptures and obelisks.

One such object features in this exhibition.

The 2m high obelisk is part of a collaborative project with printmaker Brian Lalor. This collection also includes fascinating sculptures,

tablets and scrolls by Jim, all influenced by the ancient middle east.

There are brand new works to see here: a collection of intricate bowls incorporating paperclay sides, stoneware glazes and dry slips.

Jim Turner lives and works in West Cork and he recently celebrated his 70th birthday. His ceramic works have always reflected a love for constructed form, particularly the fractal architecture of Frank Gehry is evident throughout his work. Jim’s jovial disposition disguises a passionate artist, a trailblazer and risk-taker; a maker in the truest sense. Jim is a potter’s potter, his steadfast commitment to his art, his tireless development of new ideas and mastery of material, makes this retrospective exhibition of work a truly outstanding achievement and one not to be missed.

This exhibition at Gallery Zozimus is a unique chance to see and acquire showstopping sculptural pots and collaborative works.

Cobh Guinness Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival Every year in September, the beautiful tourist town of Cobh in County Cork hosts a gathering of International, National and Local Blues musicians for the annual Guinness Cobh Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival.

With concerts and performances both outdoor and indoor, including many of the town’s pubs and hotels, Cobh Guinness Blues Festival was founded by publican Paul O'Halloran in September 2007. The musical genre of the Cobh Blues Festival was broadened last year to include the allencompassing “Roots” and this was a highly successful move. As a result the 12th Guinness Cobh Blues ‘n’ Roots festival takes place on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of September 2018. Each year it has grown from strength to strength and this year will be no different.

The festival is sponsored by Diageo with the support of Cobh Tourism as well as local businesses. The event will provide over a hundred hours of free music with over 20 acts performing in 11 indoor and outdoor venues around the seaside town. On Saturday the 22nd September at 2:30pm there will be a family fun afternoon in the Promenade with the Cobh Blues Club providing the music. The waterfront location makes the perfect setting for some open air electric and acoustic blues.

The festival was originally designed to bring

more life into the town at a traditionally quieter time of the year but has grown in popularity so much that it is now one of the town’s musical highlights. It brings in returning groups of visitors and performers each year to experience some top quality music.

Anyone with an interest in blues music should not miss out on this great weekend. All are invited to attend the free concerts and local Hotels and B&Bs would be delighted to put you up for a night or the full weekend so you can enjoy the music without the hassle of getting home afterwards.

The Festival begins on Friday with gigs taking place right across the town. Over the course of the weekend the times of these vary from day and night to cater for all age groups and this year sees the return of the very popular midnight blues sessions on Friday and Saturday night in The Bellavista Hotel where the Saturday night performance begins at 11:30pm and there is also a great gig lined up for the Friday night.

Ireland’s largest food festival, A Taste of West Cork Food Festival, runs from 7th - 16th September this year. The 10-day festival now offers the largest number of events it has ever undertaken, with 255 culinary and adventure events across the region’s 41 towns and villages and 8 islands.

West Cork was awarded the No. 1 Foodie Destination 2017 by The Restaurant Association of Ireland and the festival now brings its culinary reputation to new heights with the arrival of six chefs from the USA. Cork is set once again to host the Cork Folk Festival.The packed international line up features musicians from all over Europe and Ireland.

Headlining this year’s festival will be the wonderful singer from Yorkshire, Kate Rusby.The five day festival now in its 39th year will also include a performance by Dave Flynn's Irish Memory Orchestra with special guest accordion maestro player Máirtín O’Connor. Also featured at this year’s 5 day festival will be KGB, featuring three of Ireland’s most famous musicians, Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin and Dermot Byrne also with fiddler Kevin Burke.This year the festival has commissioned new music to commemorate the founding of the folk festival in 1979. The Hunt Museum Cliffs of Moher Loop Head Lighthouse This popular tourist attraction is located at the mouth of the Shannon Estuary on the Loop Head Peninsula, which is one of two “Signature Discovery Points” in County Clare along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way. It also is a landmark location on the Loop Head Heritage Trail and is one of 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland. The lighthouse is steeped in history and rich in maritime heritage with its origins dating back to the 1670s. The existing tower style lighthouse was constructed in 1854 and was operated and maintained by a keeper who lived within the lighthouse compound. In January 1991, the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation, and today is monitored by the CIL.Open daily (10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.) until 5 November.

The Hunt Museum has artefacts from Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Olmec civilisation. There is also an important collection of Irish archaeological material ranging from Neolithic flints, Bronze Age material, and Christian art.

One of the strengths of the collection is the medieval material, which include statues in stone and wood, painted panels, jewellery, enamels, ivories, ceramics, crystal and crucifixes. Plus work from Picasso, Renoir, Roderic O’Conor, Jack B. Yeats, Robert Fagan and Henry Moore.

Stretching for eight kilometres along the coastline and standing at 214 metres at their highest point, the Cliffs of Moher give the visitor a panoramic view out onto the Atlantic Ocean. It is said that on a clear day you can see the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, over the twelve pins and the Blasket Islands off the coast of Kerry.

he exhibition at Cobh Heritage Centre, known as The Queenstown Story, is inventively situated within Cobh’s restored Victorian railway station, a building with its own historic story.

The Queenstown Story will engage the visitor in a journey through time, recalling Irish emigration with real stories about real people. From the indentured servants of Virginia and the West Indies plantations in the 17th century, the early settlers in upper Canada, the famine victims of the 1840s to the large-scale emigration of the 19th and 20th centuries. The visitor will also discover the hardships endured by the convicts who were transported to Australia.

The present town of Cobh has its origins as a small village nestled in the hillside on the southern shores. The village was known as Cove, being situated in the cove, or harbour, of Cork.

The town did not begin to grow until the early nineteenth century, but its strategic importance was realised in the late eighteenth century during the American War of Independence. Vital shiploads of troops and supplies were needed by the British forces

fighting in America between 1775 and 1781.

The entry of France into the war in 1778 heightened the danger of these ships being attacked at sea. This large and safe harbour provided ideal conditions in which the ships could assemble and be protected. The wars against France from the 1790s to 1815 were to prove the catalyst which led to the future prosperity of the town as Cove and its harbour played an important role in this war at sea.

Cove went on to become a major port with both naval and merchant shipping and was one of the major ports of emigration.

Cobh, or Queenstown as it was known at the time, has very close connections with the two great liners of the 20th century, The Titanic and The Lusitania - discover the human stories behind these tragic events.

The exhibition is a self-guided tour with audio tours available in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Chinese. It is not just interesting and educational, but very emotive and thought-provoking.

PIANO FESTIVAL

History and politics are not the only forums to attract Americans to New Ross in Co Wexford this September. Following the Kennedy Summer School and before the new Eugene O’Neill weekend, this year’s Piano Festival line-up features the highly acclaimed American pianist of Irish extraction, Anne-Marie McDermott who makes her Irish debut at the opening concert on Friday 28th September in St. Mary’s Church at 8 pm. Hailed as “one of the great American pianists of her generation” Anne Marie will perform in three main concerts and give a Masterclass to up and coming young pianists on Saturday 29th September.

Also making her Irish debut is the amazing Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu who along with Anne Marie and festival artistic director Finghin Collins will be joined by Bulgarian violinist Svetlin Roussev and French cellist Marc Coppey for performances of three piano trios across the weekend. The noon coffee concerts on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th feature two young pianists, French pianist Francois Dumont, already a prizewinner of many piano competitions and Cuban pianist Marcos

The Jazz Day on Thursday 27th features renowned Swedish jazz pianist Lars Jansson while Israeli pianist David Greilsammer will perform his fascinating late night concert, Labyrinth.

The Piano Festival is unique in its focus, and it has caught the imagination of the UK music magazine, The Pianist, which has named it as one of the top ten music festivals to visit in Europe this year.

The festival’s concerts take place predominantly in St Mary’s Church, a Church of Ireland church built in the footprint of the nave of the original Norman building founded by the famous William Marshal, the Norman knight who built the town of New Ross as a port for his exports and imports.

The remaining walls of that ancient building, flood-lit at night, form an impressive background to the church.

It has a wonderful acoustic, remarked upon by all who attend.

Westport House

Kylemore Abbey Few places on earth have the tranquillity and beauty of Kylemore Abbey and its majestic Victorian walled garden, which won the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in 2002.The garden comprises of roughly 6 acres and is divided in two by a natural mountain stream. The eastern half comprises of the flower or pleasure garden, glass houses and gardeners’ houses. While the kitchen garden makes up the other half of the garden and is predominantly given over to the growing of food.

Glencar Waterfall Glencar Waterfall is situated near Glencar Lake, 11 kilometres west of Manorhamilton, County Leitrim. It is particularly impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk. The most dramatic waterfall descends from a 50ft rocky headland into a deep pool below in a haze of white spray. A paved path to the viewing area provides a wonderful vantage point from which to view the waterfall which is particularly spectacular during wet conditions.

Arigna Mining Experience Discover what coal mining life was like for coal miners in the Arigna Valley in Roscommon from the 1700’s until its closure in 1990. Visit the exhibition area to discover the history of the mine and then take an underground tour of the mine, where the methods used to extract coal are demonstrated, with lighting and sound effects added for authenticity.

Dún Aonghasa National Museum of Ireland - Country Life The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar houses exhibits showing how rural people in Ireland lived from the time of the Great Famine right up until the 1950s. The museum features four levels of interactive displays and exhibitions that offer a fascinating insight into the lives of the rural Irish people in years gone by.

Connemara Mullaghmore is one of the surfing capitals of the Irish Atlantic coastline, and is recognised as one of the top surfing destinations in the world. Surfers and windsurfers from all over the world have ridden waves up to 15 metres (49 ft) high off Mullaghmore Head. The area is also safe for bathing, and has all the modern facilities that you could wish for to make your stay enjoyable.

Westport House is one of the finest country houses in Ireland and since it opened to the public in the 1960s, over four million visitors have passed through its doors.

There are over 30 rooms on show, where visitors can immerse themselves in over 500 years of history, going back to the time when the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley ruled the estate. Travel from the rugged Twelve Bens mountain range in the north through lake-rich Roundstone Bog, to the golden beaches reaching out into the Atlantic Ocean. This wondrous landscape is bounded on the West, South and North by the Atlantic Ocean.

Located on Inismór in the Aran Islands, Dún Aonghasa is one of the best examples of a semi-circular stone fort in Europe.

Located on the 300ft cliffside on the south of the island, it is one of Ireland’s most visited attractions and offers stunning views that stretch the length of the island.

Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick is 5 miles from the picturesque town of Westport, and its conical shape soars majestically above the surrounding countryside, offering spectacular views of Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside. It was on the summit of this mountain that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD, and the custom has been faithfully handed down from generation to generation. On the last day in July 25,000 pilgrims climb it, and over a million people visit Croagh Patrick every year.

Titanic Belfast Since opening in March 2012 Titanic Belfast has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, with over a million visitors through its doors in its first year. Housed in an iconic, six storey building, it’s located in the heart of Belfast, right next to the site where the famous ship was built, telling the story of the Titanic from its conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through its construction and launch, to its famous maiden voyage and tragic end.

The Giant’s Causeway The Giant’s Causeway stretches for around five kilometres along the Antrim coast.

Legend has it that it was built by Finn MacCool so that he could get across to Scotland to take on a giant who lived there.

In 1986 the Giant’s Causeway Visitors centre opened, after the World Heritage Conventions added it to its list of sites which are of exceptional interest and universal value.

Dunluce Castle With a rich history, in a stunning, location, Dunluce Castle on the coast of Antrim is just waiting to be explored. Visitor information includes an audio visual tour of the castle, with a ‘treasure hunt’ encouraging younger visitors to explore.

Located in Belfast’s Cathedral district, very unusually this pub is owned by the Belfast Unemployment Resource Centre, which was opened by local poet, socialist and Freeman of the City, John Hewitt. Great Irish Writers BRENDAN BEHAN

B

rendan Behan was a colourful character - renowned almost as much for his drinking exploits as his writing. He even once described himself as, “a drinker with writing problems” and while some of these exploits may have helped him gain a degree of notoriety, they should not take away from his legacy as one of Ireland’s greatest writers and poets.

Born into a staunch republican family in Dublin in 1923, the young Brendan was exposed to great literature from an early age. His father Stephen, a house painter, used to read the works of Zola, Galsworthy and Maupassant among others to his children. Stephen had also been active during the Irish War of Independence, as was his wife Kathleen. She was a close friend of Michael Collins and remained politically active throughout her life.

Coming from such a background, it is perhaps not surprising that Brendan joined the IRA’s youth wing, Fianna Éireann at the age of 14, before going on to join the IRA at the age of 16. His first poems were published in Fianna Éireann’s magazine Fianna: the Voice of Young Ireland but his involvement with the IRA would lead to his incarceration when he was caught on an unauthorised solo mission to blow up the Liverpool docks. He was sentenced to three years in Hollesley Bay borstal and would not return to Ireland until 1941. His experiences during this time would serve as the inspiration for his famous novel, Borstal Boy. This was not Behan’s last brush with prison. In 1942 he was tried for the attempted murder of two Garda detectives and sent to Mountjoy prison and the Curragh camp. He was released under a general amnesty in 1946 although, once again, his time in prison would have an influence on

his writing. He wrote his first play, The Landlady, while in Mountjoy and also became fluent in the Irish language. Behan would later write in both Irish and English.

Following his release from prison, Behan spent time in Galway and Kerry, as well as Paris, where legend has it he earned a living from writing pornography. Although he still drank heavily, he was disciplined in his writing and woke at 7am every morning and wrote until 12pm when the pubs opened!

His breakthrough came with the release of his play, The Quare Fellow, in 1954. The play was a huge success, running in Dublin and the West End in London. Behan managed to generate publicity for the play with a drunken appearance on the Malcolm Muggeridge television show in the UK, which cemented his image as the drunken, rebellious Irish writer.

Unfortunately, Behan would only live for 10 more years after this. His heavy drinking led to him developing diabetes and he regularly suffered diabetic seizures and comas. This affected his work and, although Borstal Boy was released to great acclaim in 1958, his later work was not as well received.

In March 1964, he collapsed in the Harbour Lights and died at the age of just 41.

In spite of his short life, Behan left a large body of influential plays, books, poetry and song, including the iconic song The Auld Triangle which featured in The Quare Fellow and has regularly been performed by artists, including Once star Glen Hansard. His work has also influenced artists as diverse as The Pogues, The Dropkick Murphys, Dexys Midnight Runners and Morrissey and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest and most colourful writers of the twentieth century.
