Bookings skyrocket - and so do hold times for tour op call centres - as the industry goes into high gear to keep up with demand TORONTO — Travel agent Sandy Willett’s auto-response email was a clear indication that after more than a year and a half of extremely challenging times for the travel industry, the tide is finally turning. “Travel is picking up again and we are very busy with new inquiries and bookings! However, your business is very important to me and I will get back to you at my earliest convenience. Thank you so much for your business!” Reached later, Willett confirmed that bookings at her Waterloo, ON-area Vision Travel agency are definitely on an upward trend. “I have been very busy in the last few weeks with inquiries and actual bookings from clients, especially to the south for the winter. I’ve had clients already travel and reporting back that they had a wonderful trip and so happy to be doing so again,” she says. The news that the U.S. plans to reopen its land border to fully vaccinated Canadians effective Nov. 8, as announced earlier this month, woke up the travelling public and triggered bookings not just to the U.S. but to sun destinations this winter too, plus Europe and cruises. And now that the blanket travel advisory against all non-essential travel has lifted, as announced last week, many in the industry expect bookings to come back with a vengeance. Some clients will still be deterred by the cost of PCR testing for all passengers returning to Canada. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has said “the rules are the rules”, indicating that the PCR test requirement won’t be going away any time soon. As Transat’s Chief Distribution Officer and President, TDC, Joe Adamo, put it during a panel discussion at TPI’s Emerge conference, asking returning passengers who have already shown proof that they’re fully vaccinated to also do mandatory PCR testing “is like having to wear a raincoat and carry an umbrella at the same time.” For many, many Canadians who have waited more than 18 months for a vacation, the PCR tests will be worth it. All the hassle and confusion with PCR tests and other requirements for vacationing now have made travel
agents a traveller’s best friend. “They are relying more now on agents to assist with the information they require to travel regarding COVID restrictions and requirements – especially since things are changing so quickly. This hopefully will convince more people that using a travel agent is the way to go!” says Willett. She adds: “It is also so nice to see countries and cruise lines opening up and relaxing their restrictions – but at the same time working to keep travellers safe.” Cruise lines including Holland America Line and Princess Cruises have announced revised vaccination policies, in line with the CDC’s update, that recognize mixed doses as fully vaccinated. “We are getting some Canadians now but do expect to see more as travel restrictions begin to evolve permitting more access,” says Holland America Line spokesperson, Erik Elvejord. “Certainly the Caribbean and Mexico have been strong cruise destinations for our Canadian guests in the past and with the pent-up demand, we expect a great deal of interest from our Canadian cruisers this winter.” Sandra McLeod of Red Door Travel in LaSalle, ON says she’s seeing more interest in cruising, especially from past cruisers. “They are comfortable with all the testing and health screen-
ing. Many have said they feel safer on a cruise ship than going to the grocery store or Costco,” she says. For McLeod's clients, the focus is also on Europe. “People are definitely more interested in travelling. Bookings for 2022 and beyond are ramping up.”
CALL CENTRE HOLD TIMES STILL AN ISSUE
All those bookings mean more calls coming into the tour operators. The sudden influx of business is making the long hold times for call centres - a problem throughout the pandemic even worse. Tour operators taking part in the TPI Emerge panel discussion tackled the issue head-on. “It’s the elephant in the room,” said Lucy Sabella, VP Operations for Air Canada Vacations. Current hold times are upwards of three hours, she noted, adding “we’ve been seeing this every day for the past while.” Adamo said Transat is experiencing similar challenges, while Sunwing Travel Group’s COO Andrew Dawson said Sunwing has been cushioned somewhat thanks to call centre resources at U.S.-based Vacations Express, owned by Sunwing Travel Group. Sabella, Adamo and Dawson all say they’ve been onboarding hundreds of new recruits for their call centres. October 28, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 3
TOP NEWS “Demand is good, calls are up,” said Adamo. “The problem is, into the call mix are requests for changes, postponements, cancellations. We also did not anticipate that the average call length would be more than double the usual.” Adamo notes that call centres are typically high turnover, high attrition workforces. The frustration in attracting and keeping staff is a knock-on effect from the pandemic’s financial aid programs and is impacting businesses across Canada in many sectors. “We are short staffed. It’s not about trying to save money. We are actively recruiting,” he said. Sabella and Adamo thanked agents for their patience and urged them to check all other available service options, including online and other self-service tools, before picking up the phone with a question or request. “We’re all a bit overwhelmed but please trust in the integrity of the processes,” said Adamo. “And please only call if you need to. We still get too many calls for final payments and seat selections.” Sabella noted that system enhancements including “a lot more online selfserve tools” are coming soon from ACV. Air Canada’s Travel Ready hub is another key resource, she added, which helps streamline all necessary travel documentation, COVID-19 testing requirements and country travel restrictions for travellers. Dawson, Sabella and Adamo had some final words for agents as the industry heads into a winter season that’s suddenly looking a lot more positive. “Now is a great time to be selling the products that you trust,” said Dawson. “Offer customers flexibility … the flexible [booking and cancellation] programs really do come in handy,” said Sabella. And these words, now more relevant than ever after 19 months of the pandemic, from Adamo: “Know your worth, and charge professional fees. And look forward to better and more fun days ahead.” Got a story idea? Questions or comments? Write to us at editorial@travelweek.ca

“Sell what’s selling”, and right now that’s last-minute getaways, says Sunwing’s Murphy TORONTO — Don’t shy away from promoting last-minute getaways because that’s where the demand is right now, says Sunwing’s VP, Retail Sales, Deana Murphy. During an industry leaders’ travel trends panel discussion at TPI’s Emerge online conference, Murphy shared that about 75% of Sunwing’s bookings in recent days were for Canadians travelling in the next 12 weeks. “And probably half of that was for travel in the next six weeks,” she added. Over the years travel agents have had a love-hate relationship with shrinking booking windows and last-minute packages. But for many Canadians, the flexibility of a last-minute vacation is key as the country comes out of the pandemic.
“I encourage you to be comfortable promoting last-minute getaways. Many Canadians are ready to travel now.” “We need to sell what’s selling,” Murphy told TPI advisors. “Most of the people in-destination right now booked in the last few weeks. I encourage you to be comfortable promoting last-minute getaways. Many Canadians are ready to travel now.” Capacity in Punta Cana and Cancun is at pre-pandemic levels right now, she added. Booking last minute lessens the changes of changes and cancellations, she said. Murphy also noted that booking last-minute means full payment is due immediately, and that means commission payments. “And who

doesn’t need commission right now?” Murphy had another message for agents: travel. Not just selling it, but doing it. “We have hundreds of travel agents who are travelling with us,” she says. “The industry needs to have travel agents feeling confident about selling travel, and getting back out there and promoting travel. Who wants to book travel with a travel agent who hasn’t travelled?” MORE TRAVEL TRENDS Along with plenty of last-minute bookings, Murphy said there’s also a big uptick in requests for long stays of two, three or even four weeks. Work-cations are increasingly popular too. Fuelled by pent-up demand from the pandemic, Canadians are choosing to combine downtime with worktime. “A lot of people, all they need is WiFi to continue to work,” she said. Also taking part in the TPI panel, Beth Butzlaff, VP, Global Partner Relations for Virtuoso, said the bleisure travel trend is going strong for Virtuoso too, especially with clients looking to tack a few extra days at the end of a work trip for a quick family getaway. Another trend is bigger suites, over-the-water bungalows and the like. That will no doubt be music to the ears of travel advisors selling Sandals and Beaches Resorts. Maureen Barnes-Smith, Director of Sales & Marketing, Unique Vacations Canada Inc., told TPI advisors that “the best time to fish is during a storm.” She encouraged TPI advisors to connect with clients. Some 350 TPI advisors and 45 supplier partners took part in TPI’s Emerge virtual conference. TPI’s 2022 conference will be an in-person event.

Q&A with Tim Morgan, co-founder of The 1000, the industry’s new travel advisor recognition program TORONTO — Travel agents have never worked harder than they have throughout the pandemic - and that’s 19 months and counting on top of decades of expertise and service for many experienced advisors in this industry. So maybe it’s the perfect time for the launch of a new travel advisor recognition program. Called ‘The 1000’, the program launched on Oct. 19 with applications avail-able free to travel agents around the world until Nov. 5, 2021, at www.the1000.club. Tim Morgan, well-known in the Canadian travel industry from his work with TPI, Virtuoso and more, is a co-founder of The 1000, along with Jeff Sirota, formerly with Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The 1000 is a club for the world’s most influential travel advisors, with an industry-first plan to build the only community of wholly-verified, top producing travel advisors from every corner of the world, across all travel product types and budgets, say Morgan and Sirota. The 1000 is designed to complement a travel advisor’s existing agency or consortia relationship. Morgan and Sirota add that The 1000’s recognition platform gives all advisors the ability to understand how their sales success likely compares to others in their local area, country, and world. Once verified by The 1000, the idea is that advisors can use this recognition to enhance their marketing to new and existing clients and supplier partners.
The 1000’s Club Board includes Ulla Heffel Bohler, CEO, Insight Vacations & Luxury Gold, Chris Austin, CSO, Explora Journeys, Filip Boyen, CEO, Forbes Travel Guide and more. The program was developed with assistance from a global travel advisor committee. “As a new travel industry emerges beyond the pandemic, it is more important than ever that advisors understand how powerful their influence is and that they are receiving recognition that is relevant to them, their clients, and their supplier relationships,” says Morgan. “We are entering a new era that requires a new approach.” Travelweek wanted to know more, so we caught up with Morgan for a Q&A: Q. What are some of the rewards / benefits / incentives for agents that join The 1000? “The most important benefit of what we’re doing is recognition. Advisors work incredibly hard and they deserve to be recognized, no matter what type of travel product they sell. With this recognition in hand, advisors will benefit from doors opening from their marketing efforts to their supplier relationships to their network of knowledge and influence growing among their peer group of similarly-positioned travel advisors around the world. Rather than tell members of The 1000 what we think their benefits should be, we’re going to work closely
with them over the next few months to put together a program that aligns with their needs and goals.” Q. Is this a group of agents that sell luxury, or top sellers in across all categories? “All advisors across all categories are invited to apply. Luxury, premium, budget, corporate, travel, cruise, air - you name it.” Q. Can you spell out how this will impact agents’ marketing efforts? “Travel advising is a profession that deserves recognition just like any other profession. Any badge, certification, or accreditation that an advisor can add to their arsenal in marketing themselves to current and prospective clients and industry partners will ultimately help them achieve their goals.” Q. Are you currently working with any of the agency groups? “We are not currently working with any agency or consortia groups, however are open to discussions. The more industry partners that recognize the importance of understanding each individual advisors’ needs, the better.” Q. What feedback are you hearing from retail groups and consortiums about The 1000? “It is early days but both in our validation work on the program and in the feedback we’ve received since launch, the feedback from across the industry has been positive, including from agency owners and groups. Our industry is built on the strength of the whole and every piece of feedback we’ve received thus far is that we are filling a void that needs to be filled.” Q. Will membership be capped at 1,000 or is that more just for the branding? “We plan to expand the numbers based on the needs of the membership. The important part for us right now is to bring together a membership of like-minded travel advisors who are
6 | TRAVELWEEK | October 28, 2021
TOP NEWS interested in shaping the future of the travel advisor community.” Q. Who will be vetting the advisors’ applications and determining the membership? Are there concerns the process could be too subjective? Is membership based on annual sales, and if yes, could that shut out some excellent advisors in smaller markets who offer great customer service but may not be able to compete on a dollar-for-dollar sales basis with other advisors in larger markets? “Vetting of applications is purely based on sales production. We understand that every travel advisor approaches their business differently and that’s why we built our recognition calculator – the first step of the application form – to help them understand that they are valuable, no matter where they live, what type of travel they sell, or what type of sales they have. There is a place for everyone in this industry who believes in the professionalism of the travel advisor and we’re kicking off that program with the launch of The 1000 today.” Q. Will there be distribution of membership across all countries? “Membership is open to travel advisors from all across the world. Travel is inherently global and the travel advisor profession is important in every corner of the globe.” Q. Once an advisor gets membership, what fees are involved, if any? “It is free to apply to The 1000 and recognition itself will also be complimentary. We don’t believe in ‘pay-to-play’ when it comes to providing a recognition award as an advisor has already shown their value and worth through their sales production – they’re already earned it, in our eyes. We only plan to charge an optional fee starting in March 2022 for other program attributes that may warrant it, should an advisor choose to participate in them.” Q. What’s your message for travel advisors? “Advisors need to know that they are relevant - not just to their clients and to suppliers but to a healthy industry - and that they need to work with industry partners who understand and amplify their relevancy.”

Jamaica announces enhanced PCR testing services for Canadians KINGSTON, JAMAICA — Jamaica is making it easier and more affordable for Canadians to return home with their proper COVID-19 PCR test results in hand. The destination has partnered with two private laboratories on the island to provide Canadian residents returning home to Canada with access to in-hotel PCR tests at a discounted rate. As per Canada’s ongoing pre-entry test result requirements, all travellers five years of age or older, regardless of citizenship or vaccination status, must provide proof of a COVID-19 negative molecular test result (PCR, NAT or RT-LAMP) within 72 hours of their scheduled departure time of their flight to Canada, or proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days. Rapid antigen tests are not accepted. As of Oct. 25, Canadians in Jamaica will be able to book their required pre-departure COVID-19 molecular test directly through Baywest Wellness Clinic and Technological Solutions Limited (TSL) for US$75 (inclusive of taxes), a reduction of more than 50% off the previous PCR testing price. Canadian visitors must schedule their test through a dedicated online laboratory portal in order to qualify for the exclusive rate. Tourists staying at a licenced hotel in Jamaica’s Resilient Corridors can schedule a PCR test to be conducted on property via a convenience concierge service. Those staying in a private villa, guesthouse or residence can book an in-person appointment at the closest Baywest or TSL laboratory location. Travel agents will also be able to book PCR testing on behalf of their clients in advance. Both PCR test booking platforms include all the necessary information required to re-enter Canada, including travel dates and the location of the test. Payment for the service will be processed online at the time of booking via credit card. Test results from Baywest and TSL will be emailed directly to clients 24-48 hours following the sample collection. “Jamaica’s new in-hotel PCR testing and reduced pricing will be a game-changer for Canadian travellers visiting the destination,” said Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett. “This effort is the latest initiative in our ongoing Jamaica CARES program, a comprehensive destination-wide commitment to providing all travellers with a safe and seamless experience while visiting our beautiful island.” To book a PCR test go to https://getwellnow.io/covidtesting (Baywest) and https://www.tsltech.com/pcr-test-canada/ (TSL). The 930-guest Viking Orion departed from the port on Oct. 20; its identical sister ship, Viking Star, will begin sailing from Port Everglades on Nov. 6. Both ships will sail on a variety of itineraries in the Caribbean and Central America through 2022.
Cruise Critic, a leading cruise reviews site, has released the results of a new consumer sentiment survey sent out in early September. The results, based on over 5,000 responses, found that the intention to cruise remains high, with 66% indicating that they currently have a cruise booked, and 65% planning to sail within the next six months. Just over a third (34%) said they do not have a cruise booked at this time. Almost half (49%) said their next booked cruise is to the Caribbean, Bahamas or Bermuda originating in the U.S., while 15% are planning an ocean cruise in Europe. Another 13% are taking a North American cruise to Alaska, Hawaii, coastal Canada or a river cruise. As for length of stay, 42% said they were looking at voyages in the six- to nine-day range.

Windstar Cruises has officially found its new home in Miami, the epicentre of the cruise industry. The small-ship cruise line is moving its headquarters from Seattle to Miami by June 2022 and has signed a lease on the fifth floor in the Doral Concourse, located adjacent to the CItyPlace Doral mixed-use project and just minutes from Miami International Airport. As part of the headquarters transition, some Windstar corporate positions are moving to Denver where the cruise line’s parent company is based, while others will be operating remotely primarily from the Seattle area. Five of Windstar’s six yachts are now back in the water with vaccination mandates in place for all passengers and crew as well as a host of health and safety precautions. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has unveiled images of its newest Super Ship, the S. S. Sphinx, on the Nile river in Egypt. The ship set sail on Sept. 23 as the only luxury river cruise currently in Egypt, offering two gourmet dining venues onboard, including a private dining room and an al fresco dining experience on the upper deck. Menus reflect the destination, with delicious options like veel ‘fatteh’ and mulukhiya Egyptian bread. There’s also a swimming pool, massage room and 42 suites. The ship operates the 12-day ‘Splendors of Egypt & The Nile,’ starting and ending in Cairo with highlights like the Temple of Karnak, the famous Egyptian Museum and more. Uniworld's S.S. Sphinx

Travel advisory lifts but solvency concerns for many agents remain TORONTO —The federal government has dropped its travel advisory against all non-essential outside of Canada, for fully vaccinated Canadians. In addition, federal certification for international travel for fully vaccinated Canadians will piggyback on provincial vaccine passports. With the elimination of the blanket travel advisory, in place since March 2020, the system now reverts back to the familiar country-specific list of advisories. Travel industry execs and organizations have been calling for this move for months, which opens up more availability for travel insurance coverage, and will get many more Canadians travelling again. ACTA President Wendy Paradis says ACTA is happy to see the blanket travel advisory go, and wants the cruise advisory - still in place, and at a Level 4 - updated too. “The lifting of the global travel advisory is a significant win for travellers, travel agents and the entire Canadian travel industry. However, it is disappointing that the blanket advisory against all cruise ship travel remains for fully-vaccinated travellers. Cruise line operators have proven that safe cruise travel is feasible. We continue to call on the federal government to lift the cruise advisory for fully-vaccinated travellers, recognizing the incredible efforts cruise lines have taken to follow strict government-mandated health and safety protocols,” says Paradis.
“From our understanding, Trudeau and Freeland’s announcement of extended financial assistance provides no help to Independent Travel Advisors, who are now left with zero government aid, now that the CRB is ended,” says ACITA co-founder Judith Coates, adding that more will become clear when the final details are released. And with the exception of tour operators who have transitioned to an upfront commission model, commissions aren’t typically paid until clients travel. That’s another concern, as Coates notes. “The announcement of the lifting of the blanket travel advisory is welcome and long awaited news, however ACITA continues to remind its members that we need to continue to drive the point home to MPs that we do not see revenue until 5 to 11 months past the lifting of any travel advisories,” she said. “Yes, our clients will now have more confidence in booking travel, but because of our delayed revenue stream, we will not be paid for those bookings until travel takes place and we know that most trips are booked six to 12 months in advance. Many independent travel advisors are barely hanging on by a thread.” Coates adds that she’s hoping that on Nov. 1, 2021, when the ban on cruise ships sailing in Canadian waters is lifted, that the Level 4 cruise advisory will also be lowered: “Cruise ships are now one of the safest places to be!”

Air Canada launches self-administered COVID-19 test kits
The lifting of the travel advisory is great news for the industry. Challenges remain with retail travel’s delayed revenue stream, and the wrap-up of CRB. New financial aid programs from the federal government include a Tourism & Hospitality Support program and a Hardest Hit Recovery Program, with wage subsidies and rent assistance. Both run Oct. 24, 2021 - May 7, 2022. There’s also a new ‘Lockdown Benefit’ of $300 per week, for workers “subject to a lockdown”, and designed for those who aren’t eligible for EI. However the Lockdown Benefit is designed as a one-off program for unexpected lockdown situations, not as ongoing support.
MONTREAL — Air Canada has announced what it calls the industry’s most comprehensive travel testing options in partnership with Switch Health, including portable self-administered COVID-19 molecular and antigen test kits for passengers. Air Canada passengers can travel with the kit and test themselves while abroad prior to their flight to Canada to meet federal government testing requirements without the need to visit a foreign COVID-19 testing clinic. Other options also include a portable self-administered Antigen Test Kit, which is accepted by many countries such as the U.S. The tests are conducted under the re-
mote supervision of a Telehealth professional from Switch Health and include an electronic report suitable for travel. The tests don’t require any lab processing and the results are received in under 45 minutes with an official electronic report suitable for travel. Air Canada is Switch Health’s launch partner for these new tests, with limited quantities initially available for Aeroplan members. The news comes on the heels of the lifting of Canada’s travel advisory and the federal government’s vaccine passport certification for international travel. The federal government currently requires travellers arriving in and returning to Canada to present a negative molecular test taken within 72 hours of their flight. While last week’s lifting of the travel advisory was cheered by the industry, there has been concern that Canada’s PCR test requirement for all returning passengers could cause travel’s recovery to lag. The testing kit options, including the Switch Health COVID-19 RT-LAMP Kit, make travelling abroad easier and more predictable until such time as the testing requirements evolve, says Air Canada. Switch Health is a Canadian-based healthcare company. “Air Canada is a leader in adopting and implementing science-based safety measures to simplify our customers’ journey,” says Mark Nasr, Senior Vice President, Products Marketing & eCommerce at Air Canada. “Together with Switch Health, we are pleased to offer our customers the most comprehensive range of travel testing options that will make travelling abroad easier and more predictable. Switch Health also seamlessly integrates into Air Canada’s digital tool allowing customers to securely submit their COVID-19 test results and records of vaccination, further simplifying the travel experience,” he added. Aeroplan members will have exclusive access to preferred pricing on all Switch Health testing products. Aeroplan preferred pricing for the portable Antigen test kit start at $79 plus applicable taxes (one kit includes two tests), and the portable RT-LAMP test kit start at $149 plus applicable taxes. Members also earn 1,000 Aeroplan points on RT-PCR tests and 500 Aeroplan points on RT-LAMP Test Kits and Antigen Tests. Aeroplan is free to join. Customers can visit aircanada.com/ switchhealth for all the details or order a test kit at switchhealth.ca/aeroplan or redeem at aircanada.com/estore. October 28, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 9

The cost of insurance is included in the health visa application fee. Fully vaccinated travellers are required to upload negative Rapid Antigen test results in addition to valid proof of vaccination (Provincial government-issued vaccine record card). Unvaccinated Canadians travelling to The Bahamas would have to obtain and present an rt-PCR test and would also be required to take a Rapid Antigen test on the 5th day of their stay. Now in effect, all children between the ages 2-11 wishing to enter The Bahamas are required to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken no more than five days prior to the date of arrival in The Bahamas. All children under the age of two are exempt from any testing requirements.

Holland America & Princess now accepting mixed vaccine doses SEATTLE — Holland America Line and Princess, both part of Carnival Corp., have announced the acceptance of passengers with mixed doses of COVID-19 vaccines. The news follows the CDC’s announcement earlier this month that the United States will allow foreign visitors who’ve received doses of two different COVID-19 vaccines to enter when its borders reopen on Nov. 8 to fully vaccinated travellers. There are approximately 3.9 million Canadians who have received mixed doses of COVID-19 vaccines. Both cruise lines are accepting the following COVID-19 vaccines: • Pfizer: 2 doses • Moderna: 2 doses • Johnson & Johnson: 1 dose • AstraZeneca: 2 doses • Sinopharm: 2 doses • Sinovac: 2 doses • MIXED DOSES of Pfizer (1 dose) + Moderna (1 dose) • MIXED DOSES of AstraZeneca (1 dose) + Pfizer (1 dose) OR Moderna (1 dose) HOLLAND AMERICA LINE On Nov. 8, 2021 Holland America’s COVID-19 vaccination policy will revise to the following: • Guests will be considered fully vaccinated who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, or any combination of two doses of an authorized or approved vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise. • Eligible vaccines are ones that have been approved/authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or have emergency use listing by World Health Organization (WHO). PRINCESS According to the cruise line, guests will be considered fully vaccinated if they’ve received their final dose of an authorized/approved COVID-19 vaccine, or any combination of two doses of an authorized/approved vaccine at least 14 days before the start of the cruise. It is unclear when Princess’ mixed dose policy takes effect, however, its website has already been updated to reflect the new measure.
Exploring Athens like a local, one beautiful neighbourhood at a time Plaka, Athens
ATHENS — Whether you’re in the mood for nightlife or shopping, museums or good food, the beach or a stroll in the park, chances are Athens has exactly what you’re looking for. With every neighbourhood boasting its own distinct charms and personality, one can spend days – if not weeks – discovering new foods and attractions in a city as wonderfully diverse as this. The most famous neighbourhood in the city is Plaka, known for its picture-perfect streets, historic landmarks and lively shops. Situated at the base of the Acropolis, Plaka is where to go to get lost among Byzantine churches, bustling cafes and restaurants and little-known museums like the fascinating Folk Instruments Museum. In Monastiraki, old and new converge in a fascinating medley of flea markets, artisan workshops, street bands and traditional coffee houses. Here, you’ll find former mosques from the city’s Ottoman era that today function as museums, as well as Byzantine churches and previously derelict buildings that have been revitalized with extraordinary displays of street art. At night, the neighbourhood comes to life as second-hand shops close and trendy bars open, with many setting out stools on narrow streets. For high-end shopping, nothing beats Kolonaki, regarded as Athens’ poshest neighbourhood. After a boom in the 1990s that saw high-street retailers moving in, a new crop of Greek designers have set up shop, offering locals and visitors a glitzy shopping experience that’s second to none. Plus, Kolonaki is also considered the
epicentre of Athens’ café culture, with an endless number of cafes and coffee houses on every street. To see just how much Athens has changed and evolved over the years, one must only spend an afternoon in Keramikos, a neighbourhood experiencing a rebirth. In recent years, Keramikos has seen sweeping changes that have transformed it into one of Athens’ hippest and most eclectic spots, home to edgy art galleries, cozy bars, cavernous clubs and even Michelin-starred restaurants. At the heart is Avdi Square, an intersection of old and new the perfectly embodies the laidback vibe of Athens. Other notable landmarks that are equally alluring are the National Theatre of Greece featuring a façade inspired by Hadrian’s Library, and the Keramikos cemetery, a fifth-century B.C. necropolis that serves as the final resting place for ancient kings and other prominent citizens. Forty minutes outside the city is picturesque Vouliagmeni, Athens’ glamourous resort town that instantly captivates with its stylish restaurants, upscale hotels like Four Seasons Astir Palace, talk-of-the-town beach clubs, and the beautiful Vouliagmeni Lake, a sunken cavern that’s open year-round. A particularly good time to visit is between May and late September, when Akti Summer Cinema hosts movies under the stars. No matter which neighbourhood you venture to in Athens, you’re guaranteed an experience as diverse as the city itself. For more information on travel to Athens go to www.ThisIsAthens.org.

Canada to lift Morocco flight ban on Oct. 29 OTTAWA — Canada has ended its final flight ban with the reintroduction of direct flights from Morocco, starting Oct. 29. According to Transport Canada, the decision to lift the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), was based on the improved COVID-19 situation in Morocco. The flight ban, which restricted direct flights to Canada from Morocco, has been in place since Aug. 29.
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Oct. 29, fully vaccinated travellers and those unvaccinated who are eligible to enter Canada will be able to board direct flights from Morocco to Canada with the following measures: • Travellers must have one of the following: Proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular pre-departure test result documented in the Moroccan COVID PCR Test Certificate issued by the Government of Morocco and recognized by the European Commission, taken within 72 hours of scheduled departure; or, Proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days before departure to Canada in lieu of a negative test. Travellers who have been in Morocco more than 14 days and have been infected while in Morocco, must provide proof of a positive COVID-19 molecular test documented in the Moroccan COVID-19 PCR Test Certificate issued by the Government of Morocco. Travellers who were infected prior to arrival in Morocco
must provide proof of previous infection from another country prior to their arrival. • Prior to boarding, air operators will authenticate passengers’ Moroccan COVID-19 PCR Test Certificates by scanning the digital QR codes to verify/confirm the identity of the passenger and their test result. They will also ensure that travellers are eligible to come to Canada, have uploaded their information into the ArriveCAN mobile app or website, and have a mask to wear during travel. Travellers who are unable to meet these requirements will be denied boarding. Travellers who are eligible to enter Canada and who depart Morocco for Canada via an indirect route still need to obtain, within 72 hours of their flight to Canada, a valid negative COVID-19 molecular test from a third country – other than Morocco – before continuing their journey to Canada. The news about Morocco comes nearly a month after Canada lifted its India flight ban, which first went into effect in April 2021.

Travel Leaders Group’s EDGE 2021 conference captures travel’s forward momentum ORLANDO — After more than a year and a half of the pandemic, and a very tough road for the travel industry, “the ships are back in the water, planes are in the air, and people are travelling again,” says Travel Leaders Group President John Lovell. Headlining a hybrid in-person / videoconference edition of the annual press conference at Travel Leaders Network’s EDGE conference, which took place from Oct. 18-21 at Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando, Lovell said the energy at the event was palpable, and so was the optimism. “The business is coming back, you can feel it,” he said. “We’ve all made it. We’re on the other side of this thing, we survived and we’re going to move on. I’m very encouraged for the future. I think the best is yet to come.” More than 1,400 travel advisors, suppliers and other industry partners registered for EDGE. It was the first live and in-person EDGE since May 2019. Travel Leaders Group’s stats estimate a return to 2019-type numbers not next year, but the year after. “I think we’ll get back to true full strength sometime in 2023,” said
Lovell, adding “2023 could be a stellar year for all of us.” In Canada there are now more than 700 TL Network members, says Christine James, Vice President of TL Network Canada. Some 38 members have joined since the start of 2021. Effective Nov. 1 that will include The Travel Agent Next Door. Last week TTAND announced that it was joining TL Network. TTAND was formerly with Ensemble. DISTINCTIVE VOYAGES’ RETURN TO THE SEAS EDGE updates included news that Travel Leaders Network’s popular Distinctive Voyages Hosted cruise program is returning to the seas, with some new additions. Distinctive Voyages’ first sailing since the pandemic departed Sept. 26, 2021, and 19 Distinctive Voyages sailings are scheduled before the end of the year. Passengers on these cruises will have a host, receive a shipboard credit and be given a bon voyage bottle of wine in lieu of a welcome reception due to social distancing regulations. In 2022 and 2023, there will be 578 Distinctive Voyages going to 30 countries and 47 ports of call. Distinctive Voyages’ cruise partners include: AmaWaterways; Azamara; Celebrity Cruises; Crystal Cruises; Cunard Line; Holland America Line; Oceania Cruises; Princess Cruises; Regent Seven Seas Cruises; Seabourn; Silversea Cruises; and Windstar Cruises.
Travel Leaders Network President Roger Block (left) and Travel Leaders Group President John Lovell (right) at EDGE 2021 in Orlando
In 2022, Distinctive Voyages’ popular Private Car and Driver option will be offered on 16 Distinctive Voyages sailings. Travel Leaders Group’s Chief Marketing Officer, Stephen McGillvray, noted that in addition to Distinctive Voyages, Travel Leaders Group’s cruise program also includes Amenity Departures, and the Culinary Collection. There are currently 5,544 Amenity Departures planned into 2024, with 17 preferred partners. The Culinary Collection meanwhile has 139 departures on the books into 2023, with a wide range of offers including Chef’s Table experiences, wine tastings, galley tours, specialty dining and more. AGENT PROFILER UPDATE McGillvray also outlined enhancements to Travel Leaders Network’s lead generation program, Agent Profiler. For the first time ever, Travel Leaders Network is allowing Agent Profiler advisors to turn off leads temporarily. This allows the advisor to take time off without having to worry about a backlog of leads. The advisor’s profile will remain up, although they will not be able to be called, and users will see a customizable note that they are not open to new leads at the moment. Agent Profiler now offers a remote agent locator, allowing a travel advisor to update their location from wherever they are currently working. Agent Profiler also offers an easy video appointment booker, requested by both travelers and travel advisors to accommodate social distancing measures and busy schedules. Agent Profiler will also host the video visit. Advisors on Agent Profiler can now also list the number of years they have been a travel advisor. And if an advisor has completed Travel Leaders Network’s Book With Confidence program, a badge is added to their profile to let users know they are experts in traveling safely in this COVID-19. For independent advisors, Agent Profiler will display the agency name on search results, along with their host agency. In 2021 Agent Profiler delivered more than 150,000 leads to advisors. Leads are fuelled by Travel Leaders Group’s B2C site in the U.S., TravelLeaders.com, and in Canada, CanadianTravelAgents.ca. October 28, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 15

G Adventures reports 1,000th tour departure and shortest booking window TORONTO — G Adventures celebrated its 1,000th tour departure earlier this month with no fewer than 11 trips departing on the milestone date. The company is also seeing its shortest booking window since the pandemic started. Travellers are now booking their G Adventures trips an average of four months prior to departure. That’s on a par with pre-COVID lead times. G Adventures is currently offering 20% off its popular Classic program of bucket list adventures, and says it has plenty of inventory for those looking to book their long-awaited adventure. According to David Green, managing director for G Adventures in Canada, the company has safely and successfully op-
erated tours since September 2020, more departures than any other operator since the onset of the global pandemic. “We’re back running trips in more than 20 countries and are experienced in all the new protocols required for travel as the world reopens. The shortened booking window proves Canadian travellers are trusting us to get them back out into the world sooner rather than later,” says Green. Classic tours on sale for 20% off, available to book until Nov. 1, 2021, for travel before Oct. 31, 2022, include: the 14-day Ultimate Italy, from Rome to Venice (now priced from $3,229 per person, down from $3,799; the 8-day Machu Picchu Adventure (now $1,383, down from $1,729); and the 11-day Backroads of Japan (now $3,759, down from $4,699).
“We’re back running trips in more than 20 countries and are experienced in all the new protocols required for travel as the world reopens. The shortened booking window proves Canadian travellers are trusting us to get them back out into the world sooner rather than later.” In August 2021 G Adventures introduced Vaccinated Tours and Travel-Ready programs. On Vaccinated Tours, all travellers and CEOs (chief experience officers) must have received a full COVID-19 vaccination with the final dose administered at least 14 days prior to day one of the tour. On Travel-Ready tours, all travellers and CEOs must have either received a full COVID-19 vaccination, or have a negative PCR test within 96 hours prior to day one of their tour’s departure. An icon will be featured next to each trip on the website to indicate which category of tour the departure falls under. All trips booked benefit from G Adventures’ Book with Confidence policy, which lets travellers cancel or rebook their tour up to 14 days before their departure at no extra cost.
