From The Haven to specialty dining and modern art, the brand new Norwegian Viva by Norwegian Cruise Line impresses in more ways than one

Being one of the first guests to sail on a ship’s maiden voyage is always a joy, and thus was my mood when I embarked Norwegian Viva in Trieste, Italy, on Aug. 10, 2023 for my four-day inaugural sailing. The second vessel of Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) Prima class is nearly identical to its sister Norwegian Prima, which debuted last year. At 143,535 gross registered tons, 965 feet long, and carrying 3,099 passengers (at double capacity) and 1,506 crew, Viva commands a presence and turns heads in every harbour.

What’s New

The main differences between Viva and Prima are due to the reconfiguration of public spaces to create additional seating.

Others are technical enhancements relating to ship operations and improved soft goods such as upgraded stateroom mattresses.

A new art installation does have everyone talking about and touching it. Created by British digital artist Dominic Harris and titled ‘Every Wing Has A Silver Lining,’ the interactive piece features 2,128 silver digital butterflies across a 16-metre screen. When touched, they flutter around in a spell-binding way, creating a shimmering tapestry. This eye-catching work graces the wall across from the Metropolitan bar, which is the perfect place to observe the antics of passersby while sipping a cocktail.

Dining Around

Known for delivering a wellrounded cruise experience, NCL continues to perfect its onboard program for cruisers of all ages seeking various levels of activity and culinary adventures.

Complimentary and casual dining options include the elegant Hudson’s and Commodore Room restaurants, The Local 24/7 casual eatery, Surfside Café and Grill (buffet), and Indulge Food Hall, which is a food-court concept where guests can order ethnic dishes (think Pad Thai, Singapore noodles, Mexican tapas, Indian chicken korma, etc.) delivered to the table.

Specialty dining continues to be a key focus, with Onda by

Scarpetta (Italian), Palomar (seafood), Cagney’s (steakhouse), Le Bistro (French), Hasuki (Teppanyaki), Nama (sushi), Los Lobos (Mexican) and Food Republic (Asian fusion). Specialty dining is included when reserving your cruise with the Free at Sea promotion, with the number of included meals dependant on the length of the sailing and the type of accommodation booked. Otherwise, all pricing is à la carte, except for a flat-fee cover charge at Hasuki.

Outdoor Spaces

Viva’s outdoor decks are designed for both action and relaxation. Adrenaline-pumping slides such as The Wave, The Drop, and The Rush are back, as well as the three-level Viva Speedway for go-kart racing. Darts, mini golf, and other deck games are available next door to the Speedway, and a children’s aqua park provides outdoor fun for the little ones (kids and teens also have their own dedicated activity centres).

For sun lovers, Deck 8 is the place to be. The entire deck is open and ocean-facing, and its key feature is Infinity Beach, with loungers surrounding an infinity-edge pool (one on each side of the ship). Deck 8 makes for a pleasant stroll, passing the glass-floored Oceanwalk, a modern sculpture garden and the aft-facing Soleil Bar, perfect for cocktails at sunset.

The main pool is found on Deck 17, as well as two additional infinityedge pools. On the same deck is the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only, pay-for-entry area with loungers and two more infinity-edge pools and hot tubs.

Entertainment & Activities

Viva’s entertainment lineup is solid, although the headline production show ‘Beetlejuice’ was unfortunately not quite ready for the maiden voyage. A new ‘Press Your Luck LIVE’ game show is also set to debut later this season.

The Syd Norman Pour House is a favourite venue for live music, featuring a vocalist group and band that perform pop hits. Across the hall is Improv At Sea, hosting a rotating list of comedians. Elsewhere on the ship, you’ll find a Latin pop band, a musical duo and a soloist. Karaoke, deck parties, DJs and themed nights (disco, 80’s, etc.) keep things moving and grooving.

The three-level Penrose Atrium remains the hub of activity, anchored by the popular Whiskey Bar, a large Starbucks, boutiques, and the Penrose Bar. You’ll also find a casino, a cigar lounge and a photography studio onboard.

There are a slew of scheduled activities onboard the Viva, but other than trivia and arts and crafts, most carry an extra charge such as the Galaxy Pavilion VR arcade, the escape room, the Viva Speedway and even mini golf and darts.

The Mandara Spa offers a thermal suite experience with a heated mineral pool, heated stone loungers, saunas, an ice room, and steam rooms. Spa passes are available for the day or the entire cruise. Barber, salon, and spa services are also available to book. A large fitness centre has complimentary cardio equipment and free weights, while most fitness classes – such as spinning, yoga, and Pilates – incur an extra charge.

Modern Accommodations

Viva’s staterooms are beautifully appointed with muted beige and light blue hues. The glassed-in shower is roomy and there is plenty of storage space in the bath. The deck furniture is comfortable and the chair’s perfect height in relation to the balcony railing allows unobstructed views while seated.

NCL was the first big-ship line to create accommodations for solo travellers, and onboard Viva are 73 Studio staterooms. These

compact but well-designed 94-square-foot cabins include a private bath and a single bed; solo guests staying in these rooms also have access to a large, shared Studio Lounge with comfy seating and a snack bar. It’s a perfect space for solos to relax, meet and make new friends.

Big Ship Luxury

Luxury cruising and big ships normally aren’t synonymous, but it can be possible onboard Viva. NCL pioneered The Haven by Norwegian concept in 2010, building a ship-within-aship enclave that houses the top-tier suites in a private part of the ship.

The Haven onboard Viva has 107 suites divided into eight categories, ranging from the Haven Penthouse at 368 square feet to the three-bedroom Haven Premier Owner’s Suite at 2,100 square feet. In between are penthouses, owner’s suites and a two-bedroom family villa. The top three Haven categories feature wraparound balconies and private outdoor hot tubs. Access to The Haven complex is via a pair of keycard-operated private elevators.

Guests staying in The Haven enjoy exclusive amenities such as a private restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with menu items not offered in the main dining room. At The Haven Bar, guests can order bespoke cocktails customized to their individual tastes and preferences. In addition, an elegant lounge and a two-level private sundeck featuring an infinity-edge pool, two hot tubs, plush loungers and daybeds ensconce Haven guests in a luxurious environment.

A priority embarkation lounge, reserved seating in the theatre and priority tendering service are additional Haven privileges, as are the services of a private concierge to help with dinner, spa, entertainment and shore excursion reservations. All Free At Sea amenities – a specialty dining package, a standard beverage package, complimentary Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credit – are included in the fare.

For luxury clients looking for exclusivity and privacy, The Haven is the place to be, as just over 200 guests are able to stay here. Yet Norwegian Viva can still deliver additional fine dining options, large-scale entertainment and a myriad of activities that small luxury ships cannot. As well, for multi-generation groups where the head of the family may seek high-end suites, the elevated service and the quietude of the Haven can offer respite while their children and grandchildren stay in more budget-friendly accommodations.

Lasting Impressions

NCL continues to impress new cruisers as well as loyal guests with Norwegian Viva, with something onboard for everyone and every taste. I like the open deck spaces, the variety of complimentary eateries and the functional stateroom layout (although the soundproofing could be better).

Things to keep in mind are the upcharges for activities, which can add up quickly if you have a family. The Free At Sea program offers the best value and a hassle-free onboard experience. Otherwise, paying for drinks, specialty restaurants and Wi-Fi would be very costly unless you don’t plan to indulge.

Norwegian Viva will complete its maiden season in the Mediterranean before repositioning to Miami for its naming ceremony by Godfather Luis Fonsi on Nov. 28, 2023. Viva will then sail to the Southern Caribbean islands this winter from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and return to the Mediterranean in 2024.

St. Kitts, a Sweet Escape

Love and romance await at every turn on this sun-soaked island

Whether a client is newly engaged or simply celebrating their togetherness, St. Kitts is equal parts sweet surprise and simple pleasures. From pristine coastal vistas and peaceful beaches, to thrilling outdoor adventures that will set their hearts racing, St. Kitts is the perfect place to unwind and make time for two. Whatever the plan – be it a wedding, vow renewal, honeymoon or simply a couples escape – this is a place where romantic adventures take hold.

“St. Kitts doesn’t ever feel crowded and there’s something for every type of traveller, which is just one of the reasons we were named the ‘Caribbean Destination of the Year’ by Caribbean Journal,” says Ellison ‘Tommy’ Thompson, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority. “We have that ‘off the grid’, escapist quality, which is something that couples are really craving right now.”

ROMANCE RESET

With its thriving rainforest, scenic tours and vibrant culture, St. Kitts allows couples to easily settle into a slower pace. They can fill their days sipping local rum under a shaded palm or engaging in more adventurous activities like hiking to the peak

of dormant volcano Mt Liamuiga, zip lining through treetops at Wingfield Estate, or exploring mountain trails and old sugar mills together on ATVs or by horseback.

Anywhere you look in St. Kitts is a striking panorama, but the most spectacular vistas are found atop the Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to 1690, it offers a dramatic view of the island’s coastline and neighbouring islands and is a popular spot for weddings. Riding the St. Kitts Scenic Railway or setting sail on a catamaran to neighbouring Nevis are just a few other ways to appreciate this diverse and picturesque island.

Foodies will also find a lot to love, with unique culinary experiences like dining at a harvest table in the rainforest, exploring a coffee and citrus farm, enjoying a tailored tasting menu at a five-star resort or becoming a certified Kittitian RumMaster.

“The verdant landscapes of the mountains and rainforest, sparkling blue waters and unspoiled beaches set the stage for an unforgettable experiential escape,” says Canadian romance expert, Alison McGill. “But it’s also a destination where you can totally unplug, deeply connect with each other and immerse yourself in the local culture for a more meaningful getaway.

PROFILE
All pics credit St. Kitts Tourism Authority

They even have a word for it – limin’ – which means hanging out and relaxing with the friendly Kittitian people, something that is highly encouraged.”

St. Kitts is working closely this year with McGill, an award-winning writer and media personality known for being Canada’s foremost authority on the romance industry, to spread its message that the destination is trending among couples seeking an immersive experience. As part of this collaboration, the island recently sponsored a 'Destination Romance Mini-Series' on McGill’s podcast, Aisle Seat, that focuses on a number of topics including: how travel strengthens your love connection, with travel journalist Natalie Preddie; why couples are falling for St. Kitts right now, with Ellison ‘Tommy’ Thompson from the St. Kitts Tourism Authority; and how to plan a tropical wedding on the island, with destination wedding planner Natalie John of Dreamy Weddings.

The podcasts provide insight into the latest trends in destination weddings and offer tips on how to create a romantic dream getaway to St. Kitts. Travel agents and travellers can download the destination’s new Romance Guide for additional information on services, venues, suppliers and requirements needed to obtain a wedding license – the latter of which is easy and hassle-free, with no residency required to marry.

“The destination wedding has never been more popular than it is in the post-pandemic era,” says McGill. “Couples are looking to celebrate in a big and memorable way. The natural beauty of a location like St. Kitts, with its incredible Instagram-worthy vistas, adventurous activities, dynamic food scene, quality accommodations and locally-based wedding planners and event specialists, will bring your client’s vision to life so that all they have to do is relax and enjoy their party in paradise.”

FALL FOR ST. KITTS

Whether your clients choose to exchange their vows here or simply celebrate their love with a romantic getaway, St. Kitts is a picture-perfect oasis, tailor-made for two with its focus on culture, connection and immersive experiences.

“This is a place where peace and tranquility lead to a more introspective and meaningful vacation,” says Thompson. “We invite couples to ‘venture deeper’ with us – and that translates to reconnecting with themselves, each other and our people.”

RIYADH — Until very recently, tourism wasn’t really a thing in Saudi Arabia.

It was only in 2019 that the country started issuing a true tourism visa, for the first time inviting visitors to explore their country for non-religious purposes. Those who have arrived since have experienced a country very much in transition, with cultural norms evolving quickly, and a leadership determined to make tourism a primary industry in the Kingdom.

They’ve put the bucks behind their sweeping public statements, committing $1 trillion in spending for tourism infrastructure over the next decade. They have plans to make Riyadh a major international flight hub, adding six runways to the airport. Money is pouring into developing ‘gigaprojects,’ sites centred around major attractions that cost billions, each.

And on a recent visit, I saw that it’s more than talk – all over the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), work is underway, with the big cities of Riyadh and Jeddah feeling like massive construction sites. New malls, hotels, restaurants and other amenities, opening every day.

This is a nation long closed, that is in the process of becoming. A visit here involves not just experiencing what’s open and available now, but envisioning what’s coming together for the near future. The ride can be both bumpy, and worthwhile. For those planning and booking trips to the KSA, here are a few important things to know.

The giga-projects

Around the country, planning and construction are underway on a number of projects so massive that ‘mega’ doesn’t quite capture it. ‘Giga-project’

24 TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL
A new destination on the horizon, with caveats: Saudi Arabia is like nothing you’ve seen before
Money is pouring into developing ‘gigaprojects,’ sites centred around major attractions that cost billions, each.

has become a buzzword, and the size and scale of each one is actually astonishing.

On the outskirts of the capital, Riyadh, Diryah Gate is a $20 billion project that aims to eventually welcome 25 million tourists annually. It’s all built around the ruins at At-Turaif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an Emirate under the first Saudi dynasty. Around it, a whole world will rise, including 38 hotels (most of them in the luxury category) and more than 100 restaurants and cafes. The site itself, and some of the amenities, are already open.

And the one you’ll hear the most about in the coming months and years: Neom. Set in a desert region fringing the Red Sea, this will be both tourist attraction and a plan for a new kind of urban life. It already has its own airport with direct flights to Dubai and other regional destinations. The plans include the only ski resort on the Arabian peninsula, plus a resort island with three luxury hotels. And most noteworthy, The Line, a linear city that may someday house nine million residents.

No alcohol

This country has some of the strictest alcohol laws in the world. Unlike neighbours Dubai and Qatar, which allow drinks to be served in hotels and other

controlled tourist environments, the booze ban here remains total. Don’t even ask about it. When I did, I was given a stiff, usually standard response: “Sir, we abide by the laws of this nation.”

If you see something that looks like a bar, don’t get too excited. Hotels and restaurants serve mocktails, complete with no-alcohol imitations of spirits like rum, whiskey and vodka, poured out of bottles made to look like the real thing. Don’t be fooled, and come prepared for a dry vacation.

It’s very conservative, but maybe not what you expect

When it comes to gender relations and women’s rights, this country remains one of the most conservative in the world. But things are changing, quickly. When I arrived, I expected to see rigid rules enforced to keep non-married men and women apart. But the guys who used to be employed for that task, the morality police, have been largely subdued and sidelined.

Women now have more rights under Vision 2030, which aims to diversify KSA’s economy away from just oil, with investments in health, education, recreation and tourism. They can drive a car, get passports and travel abroad without a male sponsor, and generally live more easily, independently. They’re employed in various workplaces – in fact, upon my arrival, all the border guards were female.

Just looking around in public spaces, men and women seem to interact fairly freely. However, strong social norms (and some of the old rules)

...an afternoon tour revealed tucked-away galleries and rooftop cafes...the place came alive, with small shops opening and the labyrinth of lanes filling with locals.

remain. While a relatively small number of women have chosen to wear only a headscarf, most appear in public with a niqab (veil) over their faces, plus a full abaya (robe). Conservative dress is expected, across the board – generally speaking, for men and women, even visitors, knees and shoulders should remain covered. And notable: for women, wearing swimsuits in a public pool or the sea isn’t generally allowed, something that, along with that alcohol ban, could throw a serious wrench into any sunny beach vacation.

You can see more than the modern Driving across big cities here, it feels like everything is new, or under construction. Sparkling new malls filled with Gucci and Louis Vuitton and other luxury brands are popping up everywhere. Construction cranes line the landscape.

But you’ll find the old, the classic, the historic, if you know where to look. Case in point: Jeddah’s old town. On my visit to Al-Balad, many of the buildings were in the process of being renovated, but an afternoon tour revealed tucked-away galleries and rooftop cafes serving Saudi coffee. And once the sun set, the place came alive, with small shops opening and the labyrinth of lanes filling with locals.

And while development is also underway there, the crown jewel of KSA’s tourism will take you far from the hustle and bustle of the cities. AlUla is an ancient city that sat along the main trade route between India and Europe. A visit here will include the ancient walled city of the same name, which is filled with mud-brick houses, as well as the archaeological site at Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the second-largest centre of the first-century Nabatean Kingdom, after Petra in Jordan.

Where to stay, and getting there

One of several new hotels that’s recently opened in Riyadh, I stayed at the Jareed, a small property set in the middle of a development called The Boulevard that includes restaurants, shops and even a food truck specializing in gourmet hamburgers.

The rooms here are massive and luxurious. Even the entry-level room includes a five-piece bathroom with a deep-soaker, free-standing tub and more than 500 square feet of space. There’s a fitness centre, full-service spa, and The Living Room, a cushy, comfortable lounge open to all hotel guests. The on-site Gallery restaurant is very good, with local and international dishes.

As for flights, while you can’t fly directly from Canada to Riyadh or Jeddah, you can get there with one connection. Two popular options: fly via Frankfurt on Lufthansa, or via New York on Saudia, the national carrier.

What is Malama?

LIKE SO MANY words in the Hawaiian language, mālama has a number of different meanings. It can mean ‘to take care of,’ ‘to preserve and protect,’ and even ‘to save.’ Mālama is a word that has been used to define the Hawaiian people’s responsibility to the land, its natural resources and each other for generations, a responsibility that they share with all visitors to the islands.

Home to 1.4 million people, the Hawaiian archipelago is one of the most isolated land masses on earth, separated from California by nearly 2,400 miles of ocean. Hawai‘i’s geographic location and its relatively small total population emphasize the importance of keeping its natural resources – the land, the ocean, sea life, birds, plants and trees – alive and thriving.

Simply put, mālama is the idea that if people take care of the land, the land will, in turn, take care of them.

How do the Hawaiian people mālama?

In Hawai‘i, there are many ways to mālama, including sharing the knowledge and history of Hawaii with future generations, working to support and feed communities in sustainable ways, removing invasive plant species from forests and streams, keeping shorelines and beaches clean from chemicals and

debris, and helping to preserve endangered native plans and wildlife. Each act of caring, of mālama, helps to protect the islands and local communities, and allows visitors to enjoy an enriched, authentic stay.

What can visitors do to mālama?

Hawai‘i encourages all visitors to rethink how they travel by taking part in at least one activity from a rich assortment of opportunities to mālama, any of which will allow them to give back to the destination but also to themselves.

Volunteer projects range from reforestation and tree planting, to self-directed beach cleanups and ocean reef preservation. Visitors can also help restore ancient fishponds, protect native species habitats, and sew Hawaiian quilts for Hawaiian elders.

Travellers won’t necessarily need to set aside a substantial chunk of their vacation to get involved. Many of these mālama activities can be joined over the course of just a few hours, in the morning or afternoon. Plus, there are several projects that can be worked on indoors, without strenuous labour.

Island of Hawai‘i

HAWAI‘I’S YOUNGEST and largest island is truly a sight to behold. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian islands combined, its sheer size is aweinspiring. With one trip to the Island of Hawaii, visitors can experience all but four of the world’s different climate zones, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra, a result of the shielding effect and elevations of the Maunakea and Maunaloa volcanoes. From the dramatic landscapes of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, to the lush valleys of the Hilo and Hāmākua Coasts, to the jet-black sands of Punalu‘u Beach, the Island of Hawai‘i is nothing short of a masterpiece.

What’s new for 2023

Mauna Kea Resort has debuted a Spirits Passport that allows guests to enjoy handcrafted beverages made with its own spirit labels at seven resort dining venues. Guests earn a US$50 resort credit by receiving a stamp for every cocktail sampled at each location, plus an additional $25 resort credit by receiving a stamp on each of the passport’s bonus-marked pages. O‘ahu

SOMETIMES CALLED ‘The Gathering Place,’ O‘ahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawai‘i’s diverse population, not to mention a fascinating fusion of East and West cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It’s this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes O‘ahu so enticing. From bustling city life to laidback surf towns, the island absolutely dazzles with its cool vibe and eclectic mix of restaurants and accommodations that keep visitors coming back for more.

Top activities

Not to be missed is a tour of the residences of Hawaiian royalty at I‘olani Palace. Be sure to sample the cuisines from a myriad of cultural influences at restaurants and roadside stalls. And be one with nature and rejuvenate the soul at Kualoa Ranch, Lē‘ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument and Waimea Valley.

FURTHER AFIELD

Canadians are once again travelling farther and longer with Collette

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BEST-SELLING TOURS FOR FALL?

“Travellers are getting out and exploring the world in 2023. In particular, they’ve shown significant interest in our ‘Best of Italy,’ ‘Costa Rica: A World of Nature,’ and ‘Cultural Treasures of Japan’ tours. All three destinations are fantastic places to explore, and Collette ensures that travellers don’t miss a thing while on tour.”

WHAT’S NEW IN THE PIPELINE THAT YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?

“In 2024 we’re going to offer a few new tours. Our all new ‘Spotlight on Northern Italy’ will be a great opportunity for travellers to explore the Veneto region over the course of one week.”

WITH THE WORST OF THE PANDEMIC BEHIND US, ARE YOU FINDING THAT CANADIANS ARE TRAVELLING FURTHER AFIELD?

“We’re seeing a lot of Canadian travellers embark on longer trips. Rather than heading out on tour for nine days, they’re electing to go for two weeks or even longer. In terms of bucket-list destinations, some of the places that stand out are South Africa where we have a selection of wonderful safari tours, Thailand, which is always lovely to visit, and Patagonia.”

HOW HAVE TRAVEL AGENTS PLAYED A PART IN THE COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

“Advisors are so important to us at Collette. We do a great deal of business

with them and appreciate their partnership very much. We’ve launched a new discount system exclusively for advisors where they can take a tour with us for a 50% discounted price. They’re welcome to bring along a companion as well, for a 25% discount.”

COLLETTE CELEBRATED ITS 105TH ANNIVERSARY LAST YEAR. WHY DO YOU THINK THE COMPANY HAS THRIVED FOR SO LONG?

“One of the things that’s allowed us to be successful for so long is our desire to be the best for our travellers. We’re always looking for new ways to improve and new experiences that we can offer to change up guided touring.”

LOVE IS LOVE in Yucatán, Mexico

hen we think of Mexico as a destination wedding, it’s often against the backdrop of white-sand beaches and turquoise water in Riviera Maya, Cabo San Lucas or Cancun. But venture further inland into Mexico’s southeastern Yucatán Peninsula and you’ll discover a mystical mecca of historic properties and luxury resorts in Yucatán state, ideal for hosting an epic fiesta with the love of your life. And now with LGBTQ+ marriages being legal in the state as of March 2022, the destination has become a welcoming place for all couples and guests.

Here are just a few reasons to consider Yucatán for your upcoming nuptials.

YOU WILL FIND THE PERFECT VENUE

In planning for the big day, Yucatán offers plenty of possible wedding locales that are welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community, from affordable, refurbished haciendas available to rent, to luxe, five-star resorts and spas where every detail is taken care of.

For a truly intimate affair, try the Casa Azul in Izamal, a private, one-bedroom love nest with an ancient Mayan pyramid and plunge pool in its backyard. If you’re expecting guests, the Hotel Rinconada del Convento just around the corner offers 12 rooms and a lush outdoor garden that

can accommodate up to 450. Couples can also access catering services that specialize in local Yucatán cuisine for the perfect wedding fare.

If exchanging vows in a historic hacienda is on your wish list, The Haciendas from the Luxury Collection offers three in Yucatán to choose from. The Hacienda Temozon Sur, for one, features indoor and outdoor wedding options, as well as the chance to pamper yourself before-

hand with a spa treatment by candlelight in an on-site cenote. Another popular spot is the Hacienda San Antonio Hool in Mérida, which dates back to the 17th century and has capacity to fit up to 700 wedding guests.

Keen to be one (or two) with nature? Yucatán’s newly opened Oriundo Luxury Nature Villas in Valladolid features guestrooms carefully designed to blend with the natural terrain of the surrounding jungle, as well as a magical outdoor space to accommodate marriage celebrations.

For a wedding spot and first-class resort all in one, Chablé Yucatán won’t disappoint. Tucked

away in the tiny town of Chicola, the spacious grounds provide a setting that is serene and romantic. The spa centres around a private cenote with modern amenities, while the rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto opulent garden views. Chablé staff will also provide suggestions for wedding planners experienced in working with LGBTQ+ guests.

SINK INTO A CENOTE

The Yucatán Peninsula is filled with thousands of deep, Mother Nature-made, freshwater wells (sinkholes) called cenotes, which the ancient Mayans believed to be the entrance to an underworld. The water, filtered by surrounding rocks dating back thousands of years, is clean and especially refreshing on hotter days. At the Zazil Tunich, a cavern-cenote in Valladolid, you can pre-arrange for a romantic three-course dinner at the bottom of the cave and opt for a traditional Mayan Purification Ceremony before a private swim. But don’t worry if you’re a beach

lover – there are plenty of ocean swimming spots in Yucatán too, including Puerto Progreso, about 30 minutes outside of Mérida.

TANTALIZE YOUR TASTEBUDS

Mayan and Spanish influences mark the vibrant flavours of Yucatán cuisine. Try a bevy of delicious fillings for the many hand-rolled, corn tortillas you’ll be sampling, including cochinita pibil (shredded pork shoulder or loin) typically served with refried beans, pickled red onion and habanero chilli. At some restaurants like the Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca in Mérida, guests can watch (and later sample) the traditional making of cochinita, which involves slowly roasting the seasoned meat in banana leaves for extra flavour. At the Hacienda Temozon Sur, you can even sign up to learn the fine art of hand-rolling your own tortillas.

Sopa de lima, a refreshing and flavourful chicken broth-based lime soup, is another Yucatán favourite served as a starter at most restaurants. Try it at the Gastronomia Yucateca Viva Teya in the heart of Mérida, where it’s served with shredded chicken and crispy tortilla strips.

START EXPLORING

Not only is the region one of the safest in Mexico for travellers, but Yucatán has several picturesque cities to explore with their own unique attractions, markets, museums and notable eateries. You’d be remiss not to take the time to meander through its largest city, Mérida. Pick a central spot like the pretty Villa Mercedes hotel as your base, and book

a walking or mini-bus tour to take in the colonial architecture and Mayan relics. Be sure to check out the iconic El Minaret, a French-style mansion and event space (they do weddings too) that dates back to 1908 and features a watchtower you can climb for a stellar view.

Get another perspective by venturing into the smaller – and very walkable – cities of Izamal and Valladolid. Explore Izamal’s Convento de San Antonio de Padua, a majestic monastery built between 1549-1561 that covers 7,800 metres, and then get some stellar photo opps amidst the city centre’s almost exclusively yellow-painted buildings. Be sure to end the day with a cocktail and an awesome view of Valladolid on the rooftop of Don Diablo terrace bar. And if you opt to stay the night, the Hotel Mesón del Marqués offers a lovely, romantic reprieve.

From ‘I do’ to ‘I don’t’: Manulife’s Premium Protection Plan offers the most coverage

Whether clients are travelling for a destination wedding or luxury vacation, the unexpected can happen at any time, resulting in cancellations, interruptions or even a trip to the emergency room. This is why it’s important to have coverage for these emergencies, which can cost thousands of dollars a day.

Manulife’s best plan that offers the most coverage, particularly for trip cancellation and disruption, is the Premium Protection Plan, known as PPP. Only available through travel agency partners, it’s designed as a top-tier coverage plan and includes a Cancel for any Reason benefit that covers up to 80% of the covered amount for any prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements. It also includes up to $10 million for emergency medical coverage for unexpected medical emergencies during the trip. Also included in the plan at no extra cost is Manulife Flight Assistance, an automatic flight delay benefit. When registering their flights with Manulife Flight Assistance, customers will receive instant payment when their flight is delayed for three hours or more, along with an additional payment after six hours of delay or total cancellation. Customers must meet the requirements to purchase the PPP; a few exclusions may apply to this extensive coverage. manulife.ca
