The spirit of

TRADITION How Velas Vallarta brings to life the haunting celebrations of Day of the Dead By Vivian Vassos

he skull is staring blankly at me, eye sockets hollow and empty. Faint penciled lines, however, trace the circles, formed to look like flower petals. I’m taking part in Day of the Dead celebrations in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and staying at Velas Vallarta, where the hotel is offering this experience during the first week of November: channelling your inner artist and painting your own skull. Yes, I said paint it. The correct name in Spanish is calavera, not nearly as gruesome sounding as the word ‘skull’ to the English-speaking ear. Luckily for the group taking part, the artist-in-residence has kindly drawn different patterns on each clay skull so we can use them as a guide. “Don’t worry about painting in the lines,” our host says, “and use as much colour as you like.” It’s a fun exercise for a group of all-ages, particularly for multi-gen families that want to teach their children about other cultures when they travel, and one that is offered every year during the first week of November.

Velas Vallarta... is designed to cater to a diverse range of guests, including families.

Velas Vallarta, says Pedro Luna, sales director at Velas Resorts, is designed to cater to a diverse range of guests, including families. “We take great pride in providing a family-friendly environment, offering an array of activities and amenities tailored to all age groups, from the newly refreshed kids club and the oversized wooden rocking horses by the pool, to the on-property daily activities and nightly entertainment in the lobby,” he says. During my stay, two conferences are happening at the resort. Vacationing guests range from groups of friends over 60 years of age, to families with little ones and wedding partiers. As a discreet security measure to manage and identify this diverse group of guests, everyone is given a locally-woven bracelet as an alternative to traditional (and unsightly) neon plastic bracelets. I’m not a fan of “bracelets,” but these are pretty and subtle at the same time. The swim-up bar in the main pool (there are three) is a big draw. Friendly matches of beach volleyball are played, Spanish lessons are offered, and aqua aerobics classes are a well-attended occurrence. The activities managers encourage daily games of ping pong, and morning yoga sessions on the grassy jetty located beachside keep active-lovers moving. For ‘leisurologists,’ shady cabanas line the beach (no need to book, it’s first come, first serve), and the oceanside restaurant La Ribera, with its view of the Sierra Madre mountains and the city of Puerto Vallarta in the distance, is hopping from breakfast to dinner, with steak and tacos being the main specialties. Don’t miss the ice cream cart for an afternoon pick-me-up. We attend the Catrina Parade, a nightly guided stroll to where one of the marigold-lined walkways in the garden acts as an outdoor sculpture gallery. There’s also an ofrenda (altar) commemorating loved ones who have departed this mortal coil. For the Day of the Dead week, the hotel has commissioned local artists to create larger-than-

Why Book Velas Resorts? “We offer competitive commission rates to our valued partners,” says sales director Pedro Lunas. “Our aim is to reward the hard work and dedication of our agents and advisors, who play an integral role in our success.” The company has expanded its incentive bonus program, Velas Experts, which allows agents to become experts on the properties online by completing lessons and quizzes, and moving up in the different levels of certification: Velas Expert, Master Agent, and Elite Agent. “Agents are rewarded with generous bonuses and access to special amenities, complimentary nights, suite upgrades and VIP amenities for their clients, as well as a 50% extra bonus for all reservations and qualified bookings made during the first month of their Velas Expert registration,” notes Luna. This bonus is in addition to any commissions made, he adds. Agents can register at www.velasexperts. com. “We have more than 1,000 Canadabased agents registered in this program,” says Luna, “from which more than a third are getting bonuses for their bookings.” Velas Resorts also works closely with major tour operators like WestJet, Sunwing, Air Canada, Transat and Travel Brands. “We believe in fostering strong relationships with tour operators,” Luna adds, “as they play a vital role in helping travellers discover the unique offerings of Velas Vallarta.” www.velasresorts.com/velas-vallarta

life-sized ‘Catrinas,’ the almost macabre incarnations of spirits-past rife with haunting, urban-legend-level history. We’re treated to a signature cocktail – blackberries muddled with a house-made mixer and Raicilla, what a chef recently told me is “the naughty little sister of Tequila and Mezcal.” We are in Jalisco, after all, the origin of agave-based spirits. To my tastebuds, it’s faintly smoky, but not as deeply smoky as mezcal, and more fragrant than tequila. It pairs well with the sweet fruit juice. Fresh pineapple juice and a splash of soda is another great pairing with Raicilla, something we experience off resort during a thoroughly enjoyable – and deliciously satisfying – taco tasting tour with Vallarta Food Tours (vallartafoodtours.com) through the lively streets of Puerto Vallarta. Velas Vallarta was originally envisioned as a time-share condominium when its builders started work 34 years ago, but a recession at the time spurred a change in thinking. Why not offer these spacious one-bedroom suites, complete with kitchens, dining area and living rooms, as hotel rooms instead? The balconies stretch the full length of the suite with access from the bedroom and the living room and offer views of the Pacific’s Bay of Banderas, as well as the pools and gardens. Two couches easily convert to single beds, there’s a pantry stocked with snacks, cereal, coffee and tea, and the fridge is filled with bottled water, milk, beer and soft drinks. And, although the suites are showing their age a tad, there’s a minimalist aesthetic with Mexican design touches that keep it beachy and breezy, not to mention the service from all levels of staff is stellar. Solo travellers can opt for a studio suite; there are also some two- and three-bedroom suites among the 345 rooms on property. And the revamped international airport is only a 10-minute drive away. Worldclass golf and fishing, as well as other water sport activities, can be arranged by the concierge.

Velas Vallarta regularly arranges candlelight dinners on the beach as well as picnics on the lawns among the lush gardens that cover the 10-acre property. Since then, Velas Resorts has opened six properties, all in Mexico, a point of pride for Luna. He tells me that next year Velas Vallarta will offer a Charro experience, where guests can learn about the region’s extraordinary horsemen. Aside from Velas Vallarta, there is Grand Velas, the brand’s luxury offering, with outposts in Riviera Nayarit, Riviera Maya and Los Cabos, along with the boutique hotels Casa Velas

Mexico’s rich history and culture is apparent throughout Velas Vallarta, from its food to its entertainment and activities.

in Puerto Vallarta and Mar del Cabo in Cabo San Lucas. By the end of 2023, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos will join the roster as an adults-only beachfront hotel with 79 suites (at 900 sq. ft. each), many with plunge pools, firepits or Jacuzzis, geared toward the romance market. Speaking of romance, Velas Vallarta regularly arranges candlelight dinners on the beach as well as picnics on the lawns among the lush gardens that cover the 10-acre property. Sitting under a starry sky under an open-air tepee, surrounded by the glow of candles with the surf kissing the sand as the soundtrack is a bit of tropical magic. The allfemale Mariachi band, ‘Mariachi Femenil Estrellas de América,’ comes down to the beach from the fiesta happening at La Ribera to serenade us. The food is overseen by the chef at Restaurant Andrea, the fine-dining Mediterranean-inspired spot that changes its theme nightly, from Italian to Mexican. Mexico’s rich history and culture is apparent throughout Velas Vallarta, from its food to its entertainment and activities. Luna tells me that this region of the Sierra Madres is home to the Huichol, known for their colourful yarn paintings and exquisite beadwork in jewelry and décor. There’s already an artisan stand on property and, along with intricately painted calaveras and other sculptures, there is some of this art available for

purchase. But there’s no pushy sales pitch, simply an artist working her booth, quietly painting a calavera while I browse. Building on this, Luna says that more Huichol influences are coming: “We plan to build off of the success of our equinox and solstice cultural ceremonies by offering guests a chance to learn about the local Huichol culture. The ceremonies, also known as peyote ritual or hikuri, will be held on the beach in March, June, September and December 2024.” My own calavera, once finished, is evidence of a novice. When we all take a look at our finished skulls, there’s laughter at some, awe at others and a convivial feeling of accomplishment – even though the haunting eyes of my calavera don’t seem to have softened, floral embellishments and all.
