TORONTO — We’ve all griped about the price of chicken in recent months. Lettuce cost an arm and a leg for months, gasoline prices remain well above average, and don’t even get us started on mortgage rates.
Record-high inflation rates in Canada, which reached their peak in June 2022 at 8.1%, have impacted just about every facet of daily life, from groceries to gasoline to housing. And though the annual inflation rate fell to 2.8% in June 2023, a sizable decline from May’s 3.4% rate, Canadians are still feeling the burn of the high cost of living, forcing many to forego little luxuries and alter their travel plans.
A recent Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News found that six in 10 Canadians (62%) are scaling back their vacation plans due to inflation, while 24% say there’s just no way they can afford to vacation at all this summer. But in a twisted Catch-22, the more Canadians stress over inflation, the greater the need for them to go on vacation. Seven in 10 (71%) say they really need to get away, particularly those with kids (83%), but only six in 10 (58%) think it’s likely they’ll be able to.
“It’s clear that from discussions with suppliers and travel advisors, inflation is indeed affecting travel plans for 2023,” says Heather Baker, National Marketing Manager, Independent by Flight Centre. “The concerns about rising costs for transportation, accommodation and other expenses related to travel have been expressed by many. The high cost of living is having an impact on travel budgets this year, prompting people to make adjustments in their trip planning and budgeting.”
Baker adds, however, that despite limited budgets, Canadians are still finding a way to get away, a clear indication of just how highly they value travel.
“Individuals are recognizing the significance of travel experiences and are continuing to embrace them, even if it means making sacrifices in other areas of their lives. This unwavering determination to pursue wanderlust is a testament to the transformative power of travel and its enduring influence on our lives,” says Baker.
Case in point, Uplift, a leading provider of ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (BNPL) travel payment and credit products.
According to Denise Heffron, Managing Director, Commercial, business has been progressively increasing and continues to look good into the winter, which means Canadians are doing whatever’s necessary to book their much-deserved vacations.
“With the extended COVID pause for travel in Canada, it appears as though Canadians are continuing
to make up for lost time and travel,” she tells Travelweek. “At Uplift, our Q2 business in Canada was up considerably year-over-year, and the trend for Q3 is excellent as well. Overall in the market, business is robust but the increases we are seeing could be partially due to travellers’ increasing adoption of monthly payments for their budgeting.”
Valerie Styger, Travel Agent Distribution Manager at Expedia TAAP, Expedia Group, is seeing a similar trend in traveller sentiments, telling Travelweek that although the rising cost of everyday life is a growing concern for travellers, findings from the company’s 2023 Traveler Value Index shows that they are not reducing their travel budgets.
“In fact, nearly half said they are increasing travel budgets this year. While inflation is a consideration – a majority of consumers listed inflation as the biggest factor impacting their travel plans for the next 12 months –people still value travel and are willing
to invest in these experiences, if they feel they are getting the best value for their money,” says Styger.
Even more surprising is the fact that luxury travel continues to flourish during these inflationary times. Zeina Gedeon, President and CEO of Trevello Travel Group, tells Travelweek that the luxury market has shown “remarkable resilience” and that the trend of “hyper-personalization” has become increasingly important to luxury travellers.
“Travel remains a top priority for discretionary spending, prompting people to cut back in other areas to accommodate travel expenses,” says Gedeon. “The impact of the pandemic has ingrained a deep appreciation for travel, leading consumers to be reluctant to sacrifice it despite tough economic times.”
Úna O’Leary, General Manager of Virtuoso Canada, says that she’s seeing a shift from ‘revenge travel’ – the global phenomenon of people booking big trips to make up for lost time during the pandemic – to experiential travel, a trend where travellers splurge on meaningful, immersive experiences.
“According to our Virtuoso network survey, 74% of Virtuoso travellers say that ‘creating a travel experience that best fits my expectations is more important than price’,” she says.
But how do travellers do this without breaking the bank, particularly when everything costs so much?
Got a story idea?
Questions or comments?
Write to Cindy Sosroutomo at cindys@travelweek.ca
“Some ideas that are being shared include planning to travel during off-season or shoulder season to avoid peak pricing, and to consider other options in terms of accommodations,” says O’Leary. “Another thought is to visit locations that are less in-demand yet still provide the same feel and experiences as what travellers are looking for. For example, travel to Croatia instead of Italy."
O’Leary also recommends booking early: “Planning well in advance helps mitigate the cost of airfare and accommodations. Advisors are recommending planning vacations at least 100 days in advance.”
Similarly, Baker, of Independent by Flight Centre, suggests these cost-saving options and alternatives to clients:
“Look out for travel deals, discounts and promotions that can significantly reduce the overall expenses of their trips. Being open to flexible travel dates can also lead to more affordable options, and consider suppliers that offer payment plans. This allows your clients to spread out the cost of their trip over time, making it more manageable and less financially overwhelming for them.”
Travelweek asked those on the front lines – travel advisors – what they’re hearing from clients about the possible impact inflation has had on travel plans this year.
Brenda Slater of Beyond The Beach
in Tiny, ON, says that she hasn’t noticed any concerns from her clients about inflation, saying that “pent-up demand remains at full tilt for me.” She notes that family travel to Japan has been particularly popular this summer, as most of her clients are over 50 and relatively affluent.
Gary Rams, associated with Crowfoot Travel Solutions in Calgary, AB, says that his clients still have healthy travel budgets, but that he’s also doing his best to save them money in the long run.
“I’m spending a lot more time to make sure clients get fair value and a good experience. I may make suggestions like spending fewer days in a city like Paris where hotel prices are very high, and suggest heading to the south of France instead. There are still some places that offer a reasonable experience at fair value, like Peru, Vietnam and Thailand,” says Rams.
Meanwhile, Tony Santelli of FunRexAlcyon Travel in Laval, QC, says that in addition to inflation, travellers also have to contend with higher travel rates, with tour operators, hotels, car rental companies and airlines trying to make up for lost revenues during the pandemic.
“Sure, fuel costs more but when a packaged holiday of $1,300 is now selling for $1,700, somebody is making a bigger profit than usual,” says Santelli. “In the end, I’m finding that the pent-up demand is winning and the client is still willing to pay higher prices. If they really want to travel, they will travel.”

TORONTO — Canadians are falling head over heels in love with Paris this year – just ask First in Service Travel LTD (F1S).
The New York-based Virtuoso-affiliated travel agency, which launched in Canada in 2019, reports that the City of Lights is far outpacing every other international city being booked for 2023 by its travel advisors in Canada.
When F1S advisors were asked to name the top three locations they are booking outside Canada this year, Paris ranks first with 21.7%, followed by London (13%) and a four-way tie for third place between Lisbon, Rome, Sicily and Tel Aviv (8.7%).
F1S’s top five countries from Canada include: Italy (52.2%, with Florence, Milan, Puglia, Rome and Sicily all named); France (43.5%, with Paris named); Portugal (26.1%, with Lisbon and Porto each named); Morocco (21.7%, with Fez and Marrakesh each named); and Greece (17.4%, with Athens named).
“While Italy, France and Greece are all returning favorites with good reason, the big surprise this year is how much our clients are seeking out destinations that are less familiar and more exotic, including Portugal and Morocco,” says Fernando Gonzalez, F1S Chief Executive Officer.
Willa Griffin, who leads the F1S Canada operations, agrees: “People have been flocking to Italy and Greece since the pandemic and now are returning to destinations like Morocco that were very locked down and offer something a bit different.”
Additionally, when Canadian F1S advisors were asked to name the single top global destination where they are sending clients this year, Italy ranked first with 43.%, with no other country coming close.
“Italy is incredibly busy this year; I believe this is still catch-up from the pandemic,” notes Marisa Wise, F1S advisor. “Italy is a dream destination for many travellers. It’s also very popular with honeymooners; I have many couples booking Italy this year.”
According to F1S advisors, Canadian travelers are also seeking out new and different experiences as well. F1S advisor Isla Steinberg says, “People want to get back to experiential travel and away from beach destinations, which were a focus during Covid.”
Porto and nearby Douro Valley, along with the world-class charms on Lisbon, have propelled Portugal close to the forefront of client demand and interest.
“Portugal is an amazing country that offers excellent value in the European market,” notes F1S advisor Ashleigh O’Connor. “There is an abundance of high-end luxury hotels throughout the country, and they all offer something unique.”
Each surveyed advisor was also asked to name the single most popular international destination they
are specifically booking for Canadian clients on each continent and other major regions globally. The top picks were:
• Africa: South Africa (39.%), followed by Morocco
• Asia: Thailand (30.4%), followed by Japan
• Australia/New Zealand/South Pacific: Australia (17.4%), followed by New Zealand and Tahiti
• Caribbean: Dominican Republic (26.1%), followed by Turks & Caicos
• Central America: Costa Rica (43.4%), followed by Belize
• Europe: Italy (43.5%), followed by Portugal
• Mexico: Cancun (34.8%), followed by nearby Riviera Maya
• Middle East: Israel (52.2%), followed by United Arab Emirates
• South America: Argentina (17.4%), followed by Chile and Colombia
• United States: Florida (30.4%), followed by California and Hawaii Earlier this spring, F1S laid out its expansion plans in key markets that include Toronto, where it opened an office in 2019, Vancouver and Montreal, where it will be expanding virtual operations.

The Italian National Tourism Board (ENIT) is shutting down media reports of a climate emergency, despite soaring temperatures, wildfires and storms wreaking havoc across the country in recent weeks. “There is no climate emergency in Italy,” reads a statement by ENIT. “Temperatures are in the seasonal average with some physiological peaks, while storm phenomena are isolated episodes that occurred only in some areas and have already passed.” ENIT is assuring travellers that the tourist season is “booming” across the destination, with numbers that have far exceeded 2019 for some target segments.
Amsterdam wants to move a cruise liner terminal out of the heart of the historic capital city as the latest step in its ongoing battle against pollution and hordes of tourists clogging its narrow, cobbled streets. The Dutch capital is one of many European cities – from Rome to Venice to Paris – grappling with how to manage visitor numbers that are again soaring in the aftermath of shutdowns during the coronavirus pandemic. Aldermen at Amsterdam’s municipality voted last month in favour of a motion calling on the city to move the terminal away from its current location close to the central rail station. The vote is the latest step in Amsterdam’s long-running campaign to reduce the impact of tourism. Other measures include banning people from smoking weed in the narrow streets of its red light district and a proposal to move out of the city center many of the windows where scantily-clad prostitutes stand.

Replacing the Galaxy Pavilion, the ship’s virtual-reality complex, the Thermal Suite will feature a more centralized layout and an entrance corridor with waterfalls. A separate lounge area with three times as many hot tile loungers gives guests easy access to a sauna, ice room and aromatic steam room.
It was a sight to behold at Meyer Werft last month when Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee, floated out for the first time, revealing an important design feature – a Texas star proudly displayed on its bow. The passing of the baton comes amid Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet reshuffle ahead of the Liberals’ run in the next election.
Alghabra confirmed that he would be stepping down on Twitter on July 25, writing: “I have news to share: after a lot of reflection, I decided to not run in the next election. As a result I will be stepping aside from cabinet. I was first elected in 2006 and have had the journey of a lifetime. I’m grateful for every minute of it.”
A swearing-in ceremony took place at Rideau Hall on July 27.
Alghabra steered the government through negotiations with airlines on financial aid, COVID-19 testing at airports and a new passenger rights charter.
Rodriguez will take over on topline items including nascent plans for a high-frequency railway between Toronto and Quebec City, ongoing supply chain hitches and infrastructure vulnerable to natural disasters amid increasingly extreme weather.
Rodriguez, a Montreal MP first elected in 2004 and the Liberals’ current Quebec lieutenant, is trained in
management with a professional background in communications and cleantech. He has served in cabinet since 2019, when he became government house leader.

SEATTLE — It can be easy to lose yourself in a city like Seattle, home to a vast network of bustling neighbourhoods, waterways, top-rated attractions and picturesque parks. But with a few top tips from locals, visitors can make the most of their time in the Emerald City so that they return home with memories that last a lifetime.
Perfectly capturing the city’s diverse food scene is Fuji Bakery, a Japanese artisan bakery in the International District known for its delicious malasadas filled with inhouse-made ube custard. For other sweet treats, head to Bakery Nouveau in Capitol Hill for a twice-baked almond croissant that you can savour while perusing the stacks at Elliott Bay Book Company.
With its waterfront location, it’s no wonder that Seattle is renowned for fresh seafood. Walrus and the Carpenter is where to go for the freshest oysters, while The Whale Wins in Fremont dishes out delicious halibut that never disappoints.
Other must-visit eateries include local pizza chain Pagliacci and Molly Moon’s for local ice cream. Visitors can also pair local bites with local brews from Cloudburst Brewing or Fremont Brewing Co., or enjoy craft cocktails with local spirits from Letterpress Distilling and Copperworks Distillery in SoDo.
There’s certainly no shortage of things to do in Seattle, starting with Olympic Sculpture Park, a one-of-a-kind outdoor space with views of the Olympic Mountains and Elliott Bay. Nearby is Pike Place Market where visitors
will find Seattle’s own Gum Wall, a tourist experience with all the fruity and minty smells of chewing gum.
Families will love taking a ride on Wings Over Washington, an aerial adventure that transports riders above Washington state using 5K cameras, as well as MOHAI, the Museum of History and Industry, home to over four million historic artifacts and photographs from throughout the Puget Sound region. And of course, no visit to Seattle would be complete without a ride to the top of the Space Needle for spectacular 360-degree views.
Over at Ballard Locks, where the fresh water of Lake Union meets the salt water of the Puget Sound, visitors can watch boats being raised and lowered as the locks’ water levels are adjusted. While on Lake Union, they also have a choice of how to get around, from an Electric Boat rental or, if they’re feeling adventurous, a Hot Tub Boat rental.
More outdoor fun awaits on the banks of Lake Union, home to the iconic Gas Works Park, built on the site of a former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant. On neighbouring Lake Washington, Seward Park offers a 2.4-mile bike and walking path, an amphitheatre, an art studio and a stunning shoreline perfect for sunbathing and picnics.
And for visitors looking to explore one of Washington State’s National Parks, Evergreen Escapes hosts small group and private full-day tours that highlight such natural gems as the San Juan archipelago, Deception Pass State Park, Mt. Rainier and Snoqualmie Falls.

mandated to collect on behalf of the state, which includes popular destinations like Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, among others.
Travelkore, based in Toronto, has been appointed by Quintana Roo to automate the collection of VISITAX via its payment platform. Tim Scurry, CEO of the Torkore group of companies, said it was “quite an honour to be chosen as a unique provider of the fulfillment platform.”
The Quintana Roo State VISITAX costs US$18.80 per person and must be paid by all non-residential visitors prior to arrival at Cancun International Airport (CUN). Cash payments are not permitted upon arrival. Individuals arriving via land through the Quintana Roo’s southern border are exempt from paying the tax.
According to Scurry, the Travelkore’s user-friendly system provides travellers with a QR code, which is presented upon customs entry at the Cancun airport. Upon departure, the QR code is then cancelled.
The payment of the VISITAX on Travelkore’s platform is currently being integrated into the booking systems of airlines, tour operators, OTAs and GDS such as Amadeus.

TORONTO — G Adventures has launched two new ‘National Geographic Family Journeys’ trips in Italy and Tanzania, both available to book now.
Chris Thompson, President and CEO of Brand USA, has announced his impending retirement. According to the organization, Thompson has decided to step down and pursue life beyond work. His final day will be May 31, 2024. The search for a new President and CEO is commencing.
Thompson, who first joined Brand USA on Nov. 1, 2012, said: “It has been an incredible privilege to serve as President and CEO of Brand USA. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that the organization will continue to thrive under new leadership.”
According to David Green, managing director for Canada, the new trips launch as the small group operator reveals that bookings for the ‘National Geographic Family Journeys’ travel style have more than doubled in 2023 when compared to the same booking window in 2022 (Jan. 1-June 30). This 106% increase in bookings year-onyear, he added, is solid evidence that family travel is back.
“We’re seeing strong interest in Asia and Central America in particular, so families are looking to head further afield and check off some of those long-awaited bucket-list trips,” said Green. “We’re also witnessing a large number of multi-generational bookings – grandparents travelling together with parents and children –so people are really wanting to share experiences as families.”
The ‘National Geographic Family Journeys’ collection was created for travellers ages seven and up. The two new trips in Italy and Tanzania join the current collection of 10 trips, bringing the total to 12. Other destinations include France, Iceland, Morocco, Japan and Peru.

“At Air Canada, we know that inflight entertainment is an important part of our customers’ travel journey, particularly on long-haul flights. We look forward to welcoming customers onboard to catch up on their favourite Apple TV+ shows or discover new hits during their flight,” said John Moody, Managing Director of Product Design at Air Canada.
“This new partnership with Apple puts us on track to increase our onboard entertainment content by more than 95% since last year. We look forward to introducing even more entertainment before the end of 2023,” added Moody.

MIAMI — Crystal has made its official return to sea, relaunching under the new guardianship of A&K Travel Group.
Following a multi-million-dollar refurbishment, Crystal Serenity, which was bought by A&K along with sister ship Crystal Symphony in June 2022, departed on its inaugural voyage on July 31, from Marseille.
Crystal Symphony is currently undergoing renovations and will resume service for its inaugural voyage in Athens on Sept. 1.
“Crystal has been recognized for decades for exceptional experiences and we are excited to welcome guests back onboard for its new gilded era,” said A&K Travel Group CEO, Cristina Levis. “In just one year, we’ve been able to revitalize the ships, a feat nearly unheard of in our industry. It is an honor to be signaling this new chapter better than ever and right on schedule, all while retaining 80% of Crystal’s beloved crew on board.”
Under its former owners, Genting Hong Kong, Crystal Cruises ran into financial difficulties, leaving both ocean-going ships stranded in The
Bahamas in early 2022. A&K Travel Group announced in June 2022 that it not only purchased the two ships for US$128 million via auction, but also the company too.
Following its inaugural voyage, Crystal Serenity will sail towards Northern Europe to destinations like the UK, Ireland and Iceland before travelling to the Americas to offer experiences as north as Canada and as south as Colombia. It will then embark on its 2024 World Cruise from San Diego or Miami, which will visit 29 countries over 125 nights.
Accommodating 740 guests, Crystal Serenity now offers two new guestroom categories that cater to solo travellers : the JR. Crystal Penthouse Suite and Single Guest Room with Ocean View. Other new enhancements include the return of Umi Uma by Master Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, a newly designed Aurōra spa, and a new Head Nutritionist, Dalila Roglieri.
LA ROMANA — Former Toronto Blue Jays player Edwin Encarnación has a hand in the brand new Hilton Garden Inn La Romana, located in his home country, the Dominican Republic.
As the main shareholder of Riverhome Capital S.A.S., which collaborated with Hilton Hotels & Resorts on the new US$25 million property, Encarnación helped cut the ceremonial ribbon alongside the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona.
Located on the coast of La Caleta, just 18 minutes from La Romana Airport, the 130-room, seven-storey hotel includes two bars, a restaurant, swimming pools, gym, meetings and event facilities and outdoor areas ideal for social and corporate celebrations.
“This hotel has something very special – opening up the beach and the sector of La Caleta of La Romana, which for a long time was closed to the province and its visitors,” said the President. “Since private investment must always be accompanied by public infrastructure, we are working on creating them, so we are all part of this development of La Romana.”
Encarnación, who played eight seasons with the Blue Jays from 20092016 before retiring as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 2020, said he’s dedicated to the development of La Romana, his province of origin.
“From the moment this project was presented to me, I knew that I had to be part of it and be the one to assume this,” said Encarnación. “I joined the development of this hotel with the only requirement that most of the workers came from here, from my town La Romana, and we achieved this.”
