Skiplagging and other booking hacks are trends on TikTok, but it’s travel advisors who may pay the price for a client’s ‘deal’: WTAAA

TORONTO Social media can make your marketing dreams come true, connect you with new clients, showcase your travels to your followers and so much more.

The flip side of social media’s incredible reach? More and more travellers are learning about air booking hacks. For any agent who’s ever received an airline debit memo for a client’s skiplagging, that’s not good news at all.

Skiplagging is the term most popular on social media platforms like TikTok, but you may know it as ‘hidden city booking’ - when travellers book a multi-city itinerary that’s cheaper than their intended routing, and never use one portion of the ticket.

Travel agents have known about hidden city booking and skiplagging for decades. Savvy frequent fliers knew too. Now with the reach of social media – and as the cost of airfare climbs ever higher – the

average air traveller is hearing about a seemingly secret way to save money on airfare. But for travellers booking this way through a travel agent, it’s the agency’s bottom line that can get dinged, with an airline debit memo.

It’s an increasingly troublesome issue for retailers, says World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA) Executive Director Otto de Vries.

“Skiplagging is a long-standing issue in the travel industry that we do not support, but travel agents cannot control customer behaviour once travel is underway,” says de Vries. “While airlines have filed unsuccessful legal cases against consumers who skiplag, they continue to issue Agency Debit Memos (ADMs), penalizing agents whose clients break fare rules by not taking a flight segment.”

He cites a recent survey (from passport-photo.online) that suggests the practice is pervasive in the U.S.,

to the point that 64% of U.S. flyers said they skiplag at least 25% of their flights annually, with the practice increasingly popular among younger generations as a way to find cheaper fares and more convenient routes.

Social media platforms like TikTok have even promoted skiplagging. As de Vries tells Travelweek, “there is no doubt that social media platforms have had a role to play in the increased awareness of this practice.”

He added: “We do the right thing by booking as per the published fares, but the practice of holding the agent financially responsible when the client breaks airline rules remains a major concern. It’s time airlines play a straight game on pricing without huge markups for hub-to-hub tickets versus to final destinations which would diminish the incentive for skiplagging.”

As he tells Travelweek: “Frustrating is that if a client books this type of trip directly, the airline has little to no recourse, but when an agent/ advisor is used, they apply an ADM penalty.”

WTAAA’s stance is that travel agents have a duty to advise clients about the potential risks associated with skiplagging. These risks can include voiding return flights, losing frequent flyer benefits, facing legal action, or having accounts banned by the airline.

Travelweek wanted to know what advice de Vries would give to travel

advisors who have received an ADM for a client’s skiplagging.

“We would recommend that you always challenge the ADM if you were not aware of the customer’s intentions at the time of booking. You might also wish to engage with the client to explain the implications of their actions and attempt to recover the costs you incurred. One option for travel intermediaries is to include a recourse against clients abusing this loophole in their terms and conditions,” he said.

TRAVEL AGENTS SHARE THEIR TAKE

Travelweek checked in with Canadian travel advisors, to hear what they had to say about skiplagging.

Gilbert Manza, owner, Executive Travel Services, says that while hidden city bookings haven’t been a big issue for him “in almost 30 years in this crazy business”, he says airlines “should be a bit more sympathetic to their ‘partners’ and not just automatically issue debit memos, [as] they bear some of the responsibility as well.”

Ever since the commission caps and cuts in the late 1990s, many agencies have shifted their primary focus away from air bookings. Staring down the threat of a debit memo, whether for a client’s skiplagging or anything else, hasn’t sweetened the proposition of air for many agents.

I

HEAR MORE AGENTS ARE CHOOSING NOT TO DO AIR FOR CLIENTS ANYMORE

Jennifer Trofimuk with Planes, Trains & Kids Travel in Calgary says she doesn’t book air only, adding that she only books air as part of vacation packages and sometimes as a courtesy if a client is booking a big trip with lots of components. “But otherwise I say no. I hear more and more travel advisors are choosing not to do air for clients anymore just because it’s so much work and for little to (mostly) no commission.”

Jamie Milton with Uniglobe Carefree Travel in Saskatoon, on the other hand, says her agency is full service, and that includes air. “We have a lot of very happy and relieved clients who have found a place to book their travel. Air is definitely more work than it used to be, but we have just adjusted our fees to ensure our time is compensated,” says Milton.

Lesley Keyter with Calgary’s South Travel Inc. – operating and better known as The Travel Lady Agency – has her own take. She tells Travelweek: “I’ve heard about skiplagging – and I am sure it is annoying to the airlines – but from a consumer point of view is it really that wrong? After all they paid for the flight – and I bet the airline would fill the seat anyway.”

Keyter says her agency gave up BSP years ago “as we are leisure-focused and do not do any corporate. And now we don’t do air only either. If someone comes in and wants to do an air ticket we refer them directly to the airline website. There is not enough money in it to cover the cost of time – especially with cancellations and sked changes. The only time we do air tickets is when it is in conjunction with a cruise, tour or a custom itinerary.”

She adds: “Imagine ordering the McDonald’s special with burger, fries and a drink because it’s cheap. Then you don’t eat the fries because you’re full. And you get fined by the head franchisor. There’s got to be something wrong with the system.”

De Vries says it shouldn’t be the travel agents who bear the financial cost of their client’s travel decisions.

“WTAAA calls for an open dialogue between the airline industry and travel agent associations to address the increasing issue of skiplagging. This dialogue should focus on finding solutions that protect consumers’ rights to make informed choices while ensuring a fair and sustainable environment in which travel agents can operate,” he says.

Civic pride on full display in Detroit as community works together to shed outdated reputation

DETROIT If all you remember of Detroit is the troubled urban centre of the 1990s and early 2000s, take note – that Detroit is no more.

Even better news, the city is in the midst of a revival that’s well underway, not simply in its infancy. In fact Detroit is experiencing its lowest rate of crime in over 30 years.

Detroit is having such a significant resurgence that it will soon become one of the top 10 cities to visit in the United States. The downtown is buzzing on the weekends with plenty of interesting sites, sounds and people enjoying themselves.

Want further proof? Perhaps the best indication of Detroit’s rising popularity – one that a travel industry veteran would understand – is that the city is hosting IPW in 2028.

The changes around Detroit are ongoing, however greater downtown is where the majority of the rebuild is taking place.

It’s the only city in the United States designated as a UNESCO City of Design. Many historical buildings have been restored, returning the elegance and grandeur to the skyline. Some 20 years ago, there were approximately 70,000 abandoned buildings. Now, there are only around 10,000 to 15,000.

One example of the restoration is Hotel David Whitney, Autograph Collection. Media on this Visit Detroit trip stayed in the apartment-style, one-bedroom suites.

Originally designed by famed American architect Daniel H. Burnham, US$92 million was dropped in 2013 to redesign this historical space that was once offices for doctors and dentists, plus retail, in its heyday.

Another example is the Book Tower, where US$400 million was spent on a renovation prior to the building reopening last summer, after being closed since 2009. Originally built in 1917, Book Tower is one of the oldest buildings downtown and was restored with some of its original components. Kamper’s Rooftop Lounge on the 14th floor is a great place to grab a cocktail.

One of the best ways to see all the revived architecture is by taking the free Detroit People Mover, an almost three-mile, elevated monorail loop that takes 30 minutes to complete.

There’s plenty in the city to keep visitors entertained. One top venue, Cliff Bell’s, was Frank Sinatra’s favourite jazz bar in Detroit, with its ornate, rounded gold-leaf ceilings and excellent food.

THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE ARE COMMITTED TO MAKING THIS WORK
Detroit’s Motown Museum

The many museums are another big attraction in the Motor City. There’s the comprehensive Detroit Institute of Arts, where the docents can explain every single detail on tours, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Meanwhile the Motown Museum seems to be everyone’s favourite. Visitors can sing ‘My Girl’ together in famed Hitsville Studio A at the end of onehour guided tours.

Detroit is also a great place to catch a Major League Baseball game at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. This throwback stadium is what a baseball stadium should be, and the restored skyline was looking more beautiful than ever in the background behind the outfield.

During the trip, the locals took full opportunity to share their own strong feelings towards their city, giving the insider perspective of what makes it such and up-and-coming, trending destination. After all, Detroit is a city of diversity flush with civic pride that was built and rebuilt by the people.

Chris Moyer, Senior Director of Communications for Visit Detroit,

gave perspective on the city’s trajectory. “Cars wouldn’t be cars, music wouldn’t be music, culture wouldn’t be culture without Detroit. This is a city that is on a continuous journey. We’ve had some incredible highs, and we’ve had some lows but right now, the people who live here are committed to making this a great place to live, to work, to play and to visit.

Moyer added: “It’s an exceptionally welcoming place that’s excited to welcome more people from Canada and around the world to experience the history and culture, which includes an excellent restaurant, bar and cocktail scene.”

Moyer shared his thoughts on why now’s a great time to plan a trip to Detroit. “For Canadian travellers, coming to Detroit now in the middle of the 2020s gives them a chance to see the city at this incredible inflection point as we’re gaining momentum on this upward swing.

“Travellers can get in now before it’s even known as a destination and can see, touch, feel and experience Detroit culture firsthand very easily.

We’ll be a must-visit destination in five to ten years.”

Jason Hall, the top expert on the murals of the Eastern Market area and Detroit’s premier eBike tour guide, offered his own take on the city: “Detroit is a playground that people have no idea about.

For years it had this image of being a place that you shouldn’t go to. Now, there’s so many cool events going on, great art, fantastic music. I think of Detroit as an open area where I can do so much stuff. People who have the wrong perception should come here and see the community themselves.”

Lufthansa’s takeover of Italian airline ITA has been approved by the European Commission, with conditions to protect competition in a deal that Italy’s finance minister called “historic.” Lufthansa will invest 325 million euros to acquire a 41% stake in ITA, formerly Alitalia, from the Italian government, gaining full control by 2033 with a total investment of 829 million euros. The commission approved the deal after a year-long investigation and with conditions, noting that Lufthansa, ITA and its partners control, for example, most routes from Rome and Milan to North America.

Auberge Resorts Collection has been tapped to manage Cambridge House in Mayfair, London. The historic property is located at 94 Piccadilly and served as the former In and Out Military Club from 1865 to 1999. Set to open in late 2025, Cambridge House, Auberge Resorts Collection is the company’s first property in London. The hotel is part of a £1 billion regeneration of 1.3 prime acres of the Piccadilly Estate, including the residential development of One Carrington. The 102-room hotel, together with its private members’ club, will encompass several historic properties.

LABOUR

A collective agreement between WestJet and its mechanics has been ratified, weeks after a strike forced large-scale flight cancellations and cost the airline millions of dollars. Bret Oestreich, AMFA national president, said he believes the contract sets a new precedent for the industry and will likely prompt proactive wage increases at other carriers. Diederik Pen, WestJet’s President and COO, noted that the contract ratification provides “stability” for WestJet’s business and reflects the “instrumental value” of its mechanics and technical operations employees.

TRAVELSAVERS Canada posts 95% YOY sales growth rate

TORONTO In the first half of 2024 TRAVELSAVERS Canada welcomed 17 new agencies, collectively generating $40 million in sales.

Jane Clementino, Senior Vice President and General Manager of TRAVELSAVERS Canada, said this follows the incredible pace of growth set last year, with a 95% increase in sales.

“Our new agency owners are seasoned and professional travel advisors. More than 30 of them were motivated to leverage their business acumen by launching their own ventures.

Their trust in our brand and confidence in our support systems have been instrumental in their decision to join our network,” said Clementino.

She added that TRAVELSAVERS Canada has also forged prestigious new supplier partnerships, with Sandals Resorts, Club Med, The Palace Company, Playa Hotels & Resorts and Just You.

To attract more affiliates, TRAVELSAVERS Canada will introduce a referral program starting in the second half of 2024.

TRAVELSAVERS Canada also recently launched the ‘Break Away’ incentive program. This initiative seeks to appeal to talented advisors who have left larger agencies to establish their own businesses. Known for its selective approach to adding affiliates, TRAVELSAVERS Canada is committed to supporting these savvy entrepreneurs, says Clementino.

Windstar now booking in Canadian dollars, launches July promo

MIAMI Windstar Cruises is now booking in Canadian dollars.

OUR REFERRAL

PROGRAM

REWARDS ADVISORS WHO BRING THEIR PEERS TO US

“We are onto something significant. We aim to encourage more entrepreneurs to ‘break away’ and join us. Our referral program will reward advisors who bring their peers to us, fostering collective growth and helping us achieve our goal of becoming the leading consortium in Canada,” she said.

New online booking features will allow Canadian travel advisors to search and book in Canadian dollars.

All Canadian travel agencies will automatically default to CAD when the booking process begins, and any additional pre-cruise purchases associated with a CAD booking will be in Canadian dollars. Agencies and their clients, however, may request the pricing to be in U.S. dollars as was previously offered.

To celebrate the system upgrade, Windstar is offering Canadian residents a chance to save up to 30% off select sailings. The offer, available until July 31, is exclusive to travellers with a Canadian residential address on new bookings.

Strong 2024 for TRAVELSAVERS Canada

“Canada is one of our most important markets. We view it as a part of our primary North American business. But while Canadians are similar to our American guests in many ways, currency is one major difference,” says Windstar Vice President of Sales Dianna Rom. “We’re very glad to provide information on our cruises with Canada-centric pricing to make it easier for Canadians to calculate the cost and value of their Windstar cruise experience.”

Currencies can be adjusted up until a payment is made. Once a payment is made, it will be set to that designated currency and the currency exchange rate is locked. The exchange rate will be reviewed monthly and updated accordingly.

“If a booking is changed from CAD to USD, the price of the booking will not change with fluctuating bank exchange rates,” says Rom. “Once locked in, that will be the price of the booking in the selected currency.”

Along with the booking shift, Windstar Cruises will be creating CAD-priced flyers and other marketing materials. Travel advisors can access these through Windstar’s online Advisor Hub or request them via their Windstar Canadian Regional Sales Manager Andrea MendelsohnEast at andrea.mendelsohn@ windstarcruises.com.

Windstar is also promoting its ‘Christmas in July’ sale, on now through July 31.

“Our new fare categories address the diverse needs and priorities of travellers,” said Peden. “Economy Light offers our lowest lead in fares, while Economy Max, Business Light, and Business include benefits and experiences like no change fees, priority boarding, and lounge access. Marriott Int’l eyes SMEs with Business Access by Marriott Bonvoy

BETHESDA, MD Marriott

International is targeting small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) with a new direct booking channel.

Business Access by Marriott Bonvoy is available to SMEs based in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America and is anticipated to expand to other regions.

According to a global survey commissioned by Marriott Bonvoy and conducted by Wakefield Research among business travelers at small to medium-sized businesses in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Mexico, 75% report experiencing frustrations with their travel booking platforms, 56% say they’re difficult to use, 27% are unhappy with the inability to book travel and hotels from the same place, and 27% are disappointed with the platforms’ lack of integration with their travel expense programs. The survey also notes that 58% are unwilling to work within their current programs to the point that they would rather ask for forgiveness than permission for booking outside their companies’ travel management platforms.

Business Access by Marriott Bonvoy will allow SMEs to book hotels in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio at a discounted rate, as well as flights, rail, and rental cars. There’s also live traveller data, real-time reporting and expense management.

Marriott says the platform, merged with the global portfolio of hotel brands, “provides everything they need to manage their business travel needs.”

Pathways of the World calls ON, QC roadshow

“a resounding success”

TORONTO Pathways of the World says its recent roadshow - including dates in Quebec and, for the first time ever, Ontario - was a resounding success.

The travel company, which operates as Sentiers du Monde in Quebec, says close to 200 travel agencies were represented at the shows, which took place across the two provinces last month. This was the second edition of the roadshow, after a debut in 2019.

This year’s show partners came from the four corners of the globe and represented nearly 30 destinations, according to Pierre Couture, President, Pathways of the World.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your presence and commitment. Your passion for travel and your constant desire to offer unforgettable experiences to your customers are a source of inspiration for us.

“Thanks to you, we are convinced that our destinations and products will find a place of choice in the hearts of many travelers. We look forward to working with you to create unforgettable memories,” said Couture.

The company specializes in small group travel, private tours, as well as guaranteed departures anywhere in the world in the form of discovery tours, immersive and experiential or active travel.

Couture said the launch of the English-language brand Pathways of the World in June 2024 represents a further step in the company’s commitment to offering high-quality bilingual products to Canadian travel agencies.

The 2024 Global Piton Awards celebrated travel advisors who booked the most room nights Jan. 1Dec. 31, 2023, through the Saint Lucia Expert (SLEx) Program.

Avalon Waterways ready for its fourth year of Storyteller Series sailings

TORONTO Expanding its popular Storyteller Series into its fourth year, Avalon Waterways’ new celebrity-hosted itinerary – Waltz Along the Danube: A Storyteller Cruise with Christopher Moore –will set sail in October 2025, from Vilshofen to Budapest.

The 10-day Illuminations on the Danube departure sails through the legends and legendary settings of the Danube River. It’s a waterway that’s inspired empires, dynasties, winemakers, waltzes, as well as Moore’s newest novel, Anima Rising, coming in 2025.

“My newest book, Anima Rising, is set in Vienna in 1911,” said Moore. “I first visited Vienna on an Avalon Waterways cruise a few years ago and I was so taken with the city, I knew I wanted to set a book there. I can’t wait to go back – this time, introducing readers of my books to the sights, scenes and stories of the city. This itinerary, as a whole, is incredible.

“The architecture of Budapest is stunning and the beauty of the Danube Gorge is one of the most extraordinary bits of nature I’ve ever seen, particularly in the fall. I’m looking forward to visiting the smaller towns along the river, too, like Durnstein, where you can see the castle where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner in the 12th century – real Robin Hood stuff.”

Fans interested in joining Moore on the Danube River will experience two full days in Vienna in the settings that set the stage for Moore’s book, plus the unrivaled music and art – and the coffee houses – where creative geniuses have converged for more than a century. They’ll also be privy to special gatherings with Moore and on shore throughout their week together.

“I’m excited about my third cruise with Avalon – my second as a Storyteller host,” added Moore. “With just 150 people on board, this cruise offers the perfect setting for connection – with fans, new friends and with the world, at large.”

Moore’s 2025 cruise marks Avalon Waterways fourth year of its Storyteller Series of cruises and 11th, celebrity-hosted cruise since the series’ launch.

The company has three more Storyteller Cruises sailing in 2024 with limited space available: EuroHang II: A Cruise Celebrating Sister Hazel’s 30th Anniversary (an Active & Discovery on the Danube cruise departing July 23); Cheers to 50 Years: A Storyteller Cruise & Birthday Celebration with Jen Hatmaker (an Active & Discovery in Holland & Belgium cruise departing Aug. 3); and Kiltn’ It: Facts, Fiction & Fairytale Settings: Set Sail on the Rhine with Graham McTavish (an Active & Discovery on the Rhine cruise departing Oct. 12)

Past Storyteller hosts have included Diana Gabaldon, Cheryl Strayed, Gillian Flynn and Candace Bushnell.

First-time Le Boat clients target market for ‘Skipper for Hire’ program

SMITHS FALLS, ON Le Boat has a brand new program called ‘Skipper for Hire’.

The initiative should appeal to potential Le Boat clients who like the idea of a private boating vacation, but are unsure about piloting their own vessel.

“For many of our new customers, captaining a boat themselves is a new experience. All our boats are easy to drive, and no boat license or prior boating experience is required. The Le Boat experienced base teams provide in-depth orientation, safety briefings, and hands-on training to ensure you’re fully prepared,” says Le Boat’s Long Haul Marketing Manager, Lisa McLean.

She added: ”Many of our North American guests have expressed interest in having a skipper available as the idea of piloting a boat for the first time can be daunting.

In response to this feedback, our Skipper for Hire program aims to enhance the boating experience and provide unparalleled support to our valued guests.”

“Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned cruiser, our skilled skippers are dedicated to helping our customers feel more confident and ensure their journey is stress-free and enjoyable,” she said.

‘SKIPPER FOR HIRE’ EXPLAINED

Le Boat’s Skipper for Hire will be available exclusively along the Canal du Midi in France starting in the 2025 season, across all boat types.

For US$199 per day, travellers can enlist the expertise of a seasoned Le Boat skipper to accompany them on their maiden voyage.

On the first full day of the voyage, the appointed skipper provides guests with hands-on instruction on boat operation, navigation techniques, and maneuvering through locks.

The idea is that this personalized guidance will instill confidence, empowering guests to navigate independently for the remainder of their excursion.

Le Boat skippers will accompany guests for approximately seven hours on the first full day of their vacation, starting at 9 a.m. local time after a comprehensive predeparture briefing.

Skippers provide their own lunch and refreshments onboard, and arrangements are made for disembarkation at a suitable location by day’s end.

Le Boat assumes liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board, underscoring the company’s commitment to guest satisfaction and safety.

Skippers are stationed along the Canal du Midi, departing from Le Boat bases in Castelnaudary, Carcassonne (Trèbes), Homps, and Port Cassafières. Skippers are also proficient in both English and French.

Due to limited availability, early booking is recommended for the 2025 cruising season. If successful, Le Boat plans to expand the program to other cruising grounds in Europe or Canada in future seasons.

2025 SAVINGS

Le Boat has early booking offers for 2025. Clients can save up to 25% on budget, comfort, and Comfort Plus boat rentals across Europe. Travellers can also get 15% off Le Boat’s Horizon Fleet available for travel in Canada, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Book before Sept. 1, 2024, and secure vacations with a 25% deposit at time of booking.

Plus, with Le Boat’s 2025 Lowest Price Guarantee, clients looking at 2025 boat rental vacations in Europe or Canada can book with confidence. If the price drops after they’ve booked, Le Boat will refund the difference. They guarantee the lowest price up to 90 days before departure.

The eight-day itinerary starts and ends in Delhi and visits Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore), Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra.
