If you were to picture a dream destination wedding, chances are you’d imagine a gentle Caribbean breeze, soft sand beneath your toes and the sound of waves gently crashing against the shore, standing hand in hand with the love of your life. With Sandals Resorts, all this isn’t just a dream – it’s a reality.
When booking a wedding with Sandals Resorts, couples can rest assured knowing they’re in good hands. More than just a ceremony, Sandals weddings are an expression of love, crafted with the elegance and beauty of the Caribbean islands. Here, each detail is tailored to a couple’s vision, leaving them with nothing but time to enjoy their special day, free from stress and worry.
Each destination offers its own curated wedding package, perfectly designed to mirror the local landscape, flavours and culture. Take ‘Bahamian Breeze’ at Sandals Royal Bahamian, for example, where the island’s elegance and timeless charm flow seamlessly into wedding ceremonies. Couples can exchange vows in a tropical garden, under the soft glow of lanterns or beside sparkling blue waters.
Wedding inspirations are designed to fit every couple’s style and reflect the islands’ natural beauty. Whether it’s the classic elegance of an ‘Enchanting Sands’ wedding at Sandals Grande Saint Lucian, or the vibrant colours of ‘Jamaican Tropical Hues’ at Sandals South Coast, a Sandals destination wedding is both a reflection of the couple and an immersion into the true spirit of the Caribbean.
Weddings should be about love, not logistics. That’s why Sandals does all the heavy lifting. With its expert wedding planners, the entire planning process is seamless, from the first consultation to the final toast.
“Having our wedding at Sandals took all the stress away,” says Jessica, a recent Sandals bride. “We were able to focus on what truly mattered – being together, sharing time with our friends and family, and enjoying every
moment. Our wedding planner handled everything. It felt like magic.”
As many would say, destination weddings have gained a reputation for being a bit predictable. But a wedding at Sandals is anything but ordinary. Gone are the days of cookie-cutter ceremonies of yesteryear. Today’s Sandals weddings are elegant, bespoke affairs, where couples’ love stories are told through every carefully curated detail.
Couples can customize their weddings to reflect their own journey to love. This includes selecting the perfect menu featuring island-inspired dishes and fresh, local ingredients, and choosing floral arrangements that reflect the essence of the tropics. The toughest decision? Deciding which bathing suit to wear to the pool after the rehearsal dinner.
Sandals’ wedding planners take the time to understand each couple’s vision for their big day. Knowing that every couple is different, they’ll customize every detail to fit their needs and preferences, from the table settings to the music, to the first taste of cake. Couples can customize their wedding exactly how they envision it, or choose from a series of expertly curated inspirations.
“Our guests were blown away by how unique our wedding was,” says Mark, who recently got married at
Sandals Montego Bay. “Every detail felt personal, from the locally-inspired cocktail hour, to the stunning sunset ceremony. We didn’t just have a wedding – we created memories that we’ll cherish forever.”
Sandals Resorts understands that a wedding is more than just a day – it’s the beginning of a journey. That’s why every aspect of a couple’s stay, from their suite to the ceremony, is designed to make them feel special. With world-class amenities and luxurious accommodations, their wedding extends far beyond the ceremony itself. And their honeymoon begins the moment they say “I do,” with romantic candlelit dinners by the ocean and indulgent couples’ massages at the Red Lane Spa. It’s in these moments that Sandals truly shines. There is no rushing, no stress – just time to connect with each other while surrounded by the beauty of the islands.
From the moment couples arrive at Sandals, it becomes clear – this is where love stories flourish. The sun, sand and sea all work together to create a setting that feels timeless and romantic. All couples need to worry about during their stay is whether to dance the night away barefoot in the sand or under the soft glow of lanterns. It’s all part of the effortless luxury that comes with a Sandals wedding, an experience that’s both intimate and grand, both simple and sophisticated.
Whether couples are dreaming of a simple barefoot ceremony or an extravagant, flower-filled garden event, Sandals can make it happen. And it does it in a way that feels effortless, so that couples can focus on what matters most: their partner, their loved ones and the beautiful future ahead.

What couples are looking for now when considering a destination wedding according to the experts, based on the trends they spotted in 2024
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
“Getting away together was once a ‘luxury,’ but now it’s a priority” for Canadian and U.S. couples, says Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA)’s Executive Director, John Hawks. Every year DWHSA’s 850 Canadian and American members plan more than 12,000 destination weddings and more than 35,000 honeymoons. The association is the world’s largest network of romance travel professionals.
“Destination wedding couples will continue focusing intently on experiences – for themselves and for their guests – on these trips,” Hawks notes. “In the past, destination weddings were ‘all about the bride,’ but today couples want their guests to have an amazing time too.
This will mean alternative welcome events (for instance, a catamaran cruise on the arrival night instead of a cocktail reception at the resort), enhanced closing events (fireworks on the beach, for example), and extended destination wedding schedules (‘wedding weeks’ with several days of activities between guest arrivals and the ceremonies).”
Couples are customizing their destination wedding ceremonies well beyond suppliers’ standard packages, Hawks says. “They’ll increase their use of off-site vendors, locally based artisans and musicians, and destination-specific menu options.”
It’s a trend that Sarah Boville, also a DWHSA member, of Barefoot Travel in Grimsby, ON., is seeing with her destination wedding clients. “Quality is now prioritized over quantity,” she says. “Couples are seeking unique and authentic experiences for themselves and their guests. They are on the lookout for off-site venues that can host multiple events, including welcome parties, ceremonies, receptions, and post-wedding brunches. Cultural performances and local cuisine are highly preferred.”
The ‘experiences, not things’ trend extends to fun activities for the wedding party and their guests. “I am loving the couples that are adding a touch of adventure to their wedding experiences. They want to explore the great outdoors with their guests, whether it’s hiking through scenic trails or hiring local guides to discover hidden gems in the country they are visiting,” says Boville.
DWHSA members have begun acting as ceremony planners for their couples – “a huge shift from just booking the travel components in the past,” says Hawks.
Shauna Sharp, a member of DWHSA, says she’s seeing this trend first-hand, to her agency’s advantage. “We provide both services of a Certified Travel Agency and Certified Destination Wedding planner and this has been in even more demand since travel reopened. It’s our biggest asset,” she says. “I have noticed the demand of couples wanting someone to be the liaison between them and the resort. Couples definitely want more assistance in the full process of their wedding and are searching for the combo agency so that they know all bases are covered.”
Says Sharp: “Many couples, when pricing is sent to them, are shocked. Rates for travel out of Canada have increased and that shocks them. Destination weddings have a much larger attendance than they did prepandemic,” she notes. “The average destination wedding was 30-40 people prior to the pandemic and now they are 50-60 people or more. We have had multiple weddings on the 80+ side. This creates more work for an agency as you are working with more people, more planning and more coordination. When booking resorts/ venues you need to know that the locations can hold higher capacities, that there are enough seats/rooms to book as many as the couple think will come and more.”
I am loving the couples that are adding a touch of adventure to their wedding experiences
Couples are willing to spend more for destination weddings than they were before because home wedding costs have skyrocketed, dates are fully booked as well and many are finding it is significantly cheaper to do a destination wedding than a home wedding, she adds.
Boville, however, says she’s actually seeing more couples opt for “smaller, more intimate celebrations surrounded by their closest friends and family.” Couples, she adds, are getting creative with wedding dates, to help with costs. “While all-inclusive packages still hold their popularity due to their convenience and value, couples are now opting to book off-peak dates or days of the week. This allows them to secure better rates and have more availability at their dream destinations.”
Iberostar Selection Rose Hall Suites offer couples stunning locations to say “I do”. From a picture-perfect beach ceremony and a grand ballroom celebration to an intimate gathering surrounded by tropical flora, there are plenty of settings to tie the knot.
Three all-inclusive properties are sprinkled around Montego Bay, where guests can experience the perfect blend of bustling city and calm sea. Multiple dining options, entertainment and activities are available, as well as the option to explore the island’s beauty beyond the resorts.

If you’re looking for an intimate honeymoon destination filled with unique experiences and adventure combined with a relaxed, private vibe, then Barbados may be the ideal location. Expect it all from this Caribbean Island – mouth-watering cuisine, the bluest of waters, a friendly atmosphere and, of course, all the rum you could ever want. If sun, sand and surf are on your honeymoon getaway list, Barbados ticks all the boxes.
Barbados has some truly unique accommodations, and depending on the length of stay, suggesting a hotel-hop allows for variety.
Book Saint James at The House by Elegant Hotels. This adults-only, all-inclusive resort is a beauty. With just
34 rooms and suites, this might be the romantic and intimate honeymoon destination cleints have been looking for. The service is personal and unparalleled, with many staff greeting guests by name. Every guest receives a complimentary 30-minute “jet lag” massage to begin their stay (either at the spa or have the massage in the room). The relaxed vibe extends to the beach, with soft sand, surrounded by turquoise waters. Yoga and water activities can be booked.
Positano, an Italian delight with handmade pasta and pizza, is an excellent way to finish the day. This highend dining experience is included in the all-inclusive package. Consult with the on-site romance concierge if your clients might like to spice things up with a dinner on the beach or other date-night ideas.
Crystal Cove, also by Elegant Hotels, is a boutique hotel that sits atop oceanfront cliffs (not too high –just enough to give guests breathtaking views from the suite’s balcony). While this is not an adults-only property, it is still a quiet and intimate honeymoon destination. The lagoon-style pools (complete with a waterfall) are the perfect place to soak up the sun and take a dip to cool off. Suggest drinks at the unique Cave Bar or a visit to the coffee bar for a little pick-me-up.
The dine around program allows guests to experience restaurants at these Elegant sister hotels, and the complimentary water taxi will get you there just in time for apps.
Suggest dinner at the St. Lawrence Gap (known affectionately as The Gap), which gives guests the choice from a street full of restaurants and bars. The nightlife here is second-to-none on the island. The locals’ recommendation: Cocktail Kitchen. The Thai Fish Cakes are a delicious bite, and the Caribbean Seafood Curry will warm your belly.
For a laid-back meal on the beach, put Calma Beach Club on the itinerary. The menu is filled with local, sustainable options that will satisfy any craving. For those with dietary restrictions, the restaurant has a large selection of gluten-free and plant-based options that are as tasty as anything else on the menu.
If there’s a rum drinker in the party, they’ll love the options in Barbados, which is widely considered to be the birthplace of rum. A can’t miss is the tasting at the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, where guests learn the methods behind creating the spirit and then do a little taste-testing. (Guests will absolutely need a designated driver or car service for this excursion.)
St. Nicholas Abbey is another option for those who like rum with a side of history. The beautiful grounds are a sight to behold, and the tour ends with a look at the distillery and a taste of the award-winning recipe.
Put a day at Carlisle Bay at the top of the itinerary. Guests can set up camp at Harbour Lights Barbados by renting a couple of lounge chairs and an umbrella on the beach. They’ll spend the day in the sunshine sipping on cocktails (delivered right to them on the beach) and wading in the ocean. But be sure to make time for the turtle and shipwreck tour. A boat will take guests and
their snorkelling equipment on a very short ride, where they will jump out and explore the incredible underwater world in this intimate honeymoon destination.
If guests enjoy being on and in the water, then a catamaran cruise should be up next. Book them with a group or suggest a splurge on a more private sail. Again, the snorkelling is incredible, with thousands of fish, along with Hawksbill turtles, green turtles and leatherback turtles. A romantic sunset on the ocean caps the day.
Animal Flower Cave is a gorgeous cave with several chambers that provide stunning views. Guests will need a bathing suit because, in the last chamber, they can take a dip in a natural rock pool. Afterwards, theyt can visit the restaurant for some rum cocktails and a tasty lunch.
A round of golf is also easily arranged. Sandy Lane Golf & Country Club has three courses to choose from, with varying degrees of difficulty. The pro shop to rents clubs, and a round comes with a caddy, who can help guide duffers through the challenging 9 or 18 holes.
Barbados is truly an à-la-carte-style intimate honeymoon destination. Pick and choose exactly what your guests want, and then allow them to indulge in all the unique aspects the island has to offer. It’s a magical place – they may end up returning for their anniversary!

Ah, Jamaica. This popular vacation island is also a destination tropical wedding paradise.
With its natural beauty, warm and welcoming culture, delicious cuisine and rich musical heritage, this Caribbean jewel has all the ingredients for a dream wedding, honeymoon or couples’ romantic getaway.
From incorporating local traditions, such as “jumping the broom,” which symbolizes sweeping away the old and welcoming in the new as a married couple, to food and entertainment that features local chefs, artists and dancers, there are plenty of ways to add a touch of Jamaican culture into a couple’s special day. And, Jamaica is consistently recognized as a top honeymoon destination by Canadian travel agents.
“Jamaica is a destination synonymous with romance,” says Angella Bennett, regional director, Canada, of the Jamaica Tourist Board. “Couples from around the world have chosen the island as their preferred destination for weddings, honeymoons, elopements, proposals, and romantic getaways. Jamaica is a place where visitors can reignite their passion while making memories together. From young lovers to old flames, the destination offers
something for couples at every stage of life – world-class hotels, exciting excursions, sensuous spa treatments, gourmet dining options, and beautiful scenic landscapes that make for a picture-perfect vacation backdrop.”
“Getting married in Jamaica is a smooth and seamless process; the country offers an impressive infrastructure of resources to provide couples with everything they need to tie the knot – even if it’s last minute!” says Bennett. Couples can be married within 24 hours of arrival on the island, and applying for a marriage license is a simple process that requires minimal cost and documentation. In addition to Jamaica’s all-inclusive resort properties, there are incredible private villas and unique event venues for bespoke personalized wedding ceremonies and receptions, she says.” Couples can also take advantage of a network of experienced wedding planners and industry suppliers. “From tailors and chefs to musicians and florists, Jamaica is brimming with talented local vendors.”
On Jamaica’s western coastline, Negril offers a more laid-back vibe than the tourist hotspots of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, says Bennett. The region is a favourite for honeymooners, thanks to its pristine white sand beaches, dramatic cliff sides and beautiful sunset views. “For couples looking for a truly secluded and intimate getaway, Port Antonio is one of my favourite regions of the island. Tucked away between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, it is a hidden gem that’s popular with celebrities thanks to its VIP boutique hotels and off-the-beaten-path villas. Honeymooning couples can also enjoy a variety of eco-chic attractions like guided bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande River and swimming in the spring-fed waters of the Blue Lagoon.”
This Caribbean gem has a treasure trove of experiences that’ll make a honeymoon pop like a freshly uncorked bottle of bubbly. We’re talking Jamaica honeymoon adventures that range from heart-pounding to soulsoothing, with a dash of the delightfully quirky thrown in for good measure. Sure, there are some classic honeymoon hits but also some offbeat gems. From midnight paddles through glowing waters to chilling with the Rastafari community, these ideas promise to spark romantic memories for years.
Honeymooning couples can also enjoy a variety of eco-chic attractions like guided bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande River.
Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth offers an unforgettable nighttime. Tiny bioluminescent organisms make the water glow blue when disturbed. Guests can also take a swim and watch their bodies light up like a human glow stick. It’s magical and romantic all at once. Just imagine the incredible photos – it’s a must-do on a Jamaica honeymoon.
Skip the touristy cooking schools and arrange a private lesson with a local family. Guests will learn the secrets of perfect jerk seasoning while chatting about island life. Immersing oneself with the locals is one of the best ways to truly experience the island and create a one-of-a-kind Jamaica honeymoon.
Early risers will love this one. A trek up to the peak of Blue Mountain rewards hikers with breathtaking early-morning views of Kingston and beyond. Add a tour and tasting at a nearby coffee plantation. Blue Mountain coffee’s smooth, rich flavour is worth the early wake-up call.
For the eco-tourist, here’s a chance to help the environment while having an underwater adventure at the same time. Lionfish are an invasive species wreaking havoc on Caribbean reefs. Some dive shops offer special lionfish hunting trips. You’ll learn to catch these beautiful but destructive fish safely. The best part? Many resorts will cook your catch for dinner.
Are you curious about the Rastafari way of life? Why not visit a sustainable Rastafari village for a day of eco-education and cultural exchange? Learn about permaculture, medicinal herbs, and Italian cooking. It’s an eye-opening Jamaica honeymoon experience, and you’ll come away with practical skills for living sustainably.
As the world’s leading wedding and honeymoon destination, Jamaica is the ideal destination and perfect backdrop for the love your clients are celebrating, says Racquel Queensborough, business development manager, Jamaica Tourist Board. “Whether they are toasting their anniversary, looking to rekindle the romance, or just starting their happily ever after, Jamaica is the perfect romantic getaway to come back to romantic.” The Jamaica Tourist Board works with travel advisors in various ways.

Grenada is famous for its aromatic spices and organic chocolate. But did you know Grenada was also named the world’s first ‘Culinary Capital’ by the World Food & Travel Association (WFTA)?
A perfect destination pick for clients who travel for a shared love of foodie experiences. Sekou Stroude, Director of Sales, Canada, Grenada Tourism Authority, shares this and more highlights from the Spice Island.
“Grenada holds a special allure for Canadian travellers due to its safety in addition to its captivating blend of natural beauty, warm climate and rich culture,” says Stroude. “From January to May 2024, Grenada welcomed over 10,000 Canadians to the destination. The Pure Grenada experience beckons visitors to its 40 white sandy beaches including the world-famous Grand Anse Beach, 15 breathtaking waterfalls, six chocolate factories, four rum distilleries and more than 30 unforgettable dive sites, including the largest shipwreck in the
Caribbean ‘Bianca C’ and the World’s First Underwater Sculpture Park.
Grenada’s islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique took a very hard hit from Hurricane Beryl earlier in 2024. And, although the islands have been part of Grenada’s tourism strategy, as a tri-island nation, the two islands are not quite ready to welcome visitors again.
“While we do not have a specific timeline for when these islands will be ready to welcome visitors again, we encourage travellers to explore Grenada’s main island, which remains fully operational and open for business,” says Stroude. “Visiting Grenada’s main island not only allows you to enjoy its beautiful attractions and vibrant culture but also supports the broader recovery efforts for our entire
nation. Your presence on the main island contributes directly to our economy and helps us in our efforts to rebuild and restore the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.”
This year, Grenada welcomed some exciting new additions, adding to the island’s portfolio of luxury accommodations, perfect for privacy and intimacy that couples are seeking.
“Silversands Beach House is a new luxury boutique resort on the island’s Portici Beach,” says Stroude. The resort features 28 rooms and suites, some perched on the cliffside and others right on the sand. Each room has large canopies, terraces and indoor-outdoor designs. Guests can indulge in Italian-inspired cuisine at the resort’s restaurant, Azzurro, as well as enjoy amenities from the original Silversands hotel, including the Asian fusion restaurant Asiatique, Grenadian Grill serving fresh island flavour and the renowned rum bar, Puro. Guests can reconnect and find their inner calm by the serene pool for before- and after- treatment relaxation, the Silversands Spa offers a menu of traditional massages and inspired face and body rituals. silversandscollection. com/resorts/beach-house
“Six Senses La Sagesse is set in a picturesque location between the ocean and a tranquil bay on the southeastern coast,” notes Stroude. “This resort features 56 two-level pool suites and 15 villas crafted from natural and repurposed materials. The design emphasizes organic, contemporary interiors with openplan bedrooms and private pools. Dining at Six Senses La Sagesse highlights Caribbean and South American influences, with a focus on fresh, local produce.” The resort includes three restaurants, two bars, a
salchichoneria, bakery and unique destination dining experiences, he adds. “The spa, overlooking the lagoon, offers a peaceful retreat with soothing scents of cinnamon, nutmeg, and palo santo.” sixsenses.com/en/resorts/la-sagesse

Canadians love Mexico, for getaways and for destination weddings and honeymoons, especially the much-loved State of Quintana Roo
BY VIVIAN VASSOS
Resort towns like Cancun and Playa del Carmen get all the love, but if you’re looking for a new lesser-travelled but just as gorgeous spot to try, check out Costa Mujeres, a slice of paradise just north of Cancun on the Mexican Caribbean coast.
“The region offers a diverse selection of venues beyond just beaches, including cenotes in the middle of the jungle, caves, boats, catamarans, terraces, gardens, villages and more,” says Elina Pasos, weddings & romance manager, Quintana Roo. “This makes it a truly unique and versatile destination for couples looking to celebrate their love in a distinctive and unforgettable setting.” Here, we get the inside story.
Costa Mujeres is relatively under the radar compared to Cancun. How do you work with the destination to help promote it as a wedding and/or honeymoon destination?
I think many brides choose Mexico for a destination wedding but might be looking for a less-travelled but still full-service and easy to get to resort or hotel.
ELINA PASOS: “Costa Mujeres in particular has become a popular choice due to its convenient location, proximity to the airport, luxury all-inclusive resorts, and most notably, its beaches, which remain mostly free of seaweed throughout the year. The natural reef surrounding the area acts as a protective barrier, ensuring a clean setting for weddings and honeymoons. This is a significant factor for people looking to have a beachfront wedding. As a Convention Bureau promoting the 12 brands/destinations of the Mexican Caribbean, including the newest addition, Costa Mujeres, our primary goal is to position all destinations as ideal choices for weddings and honeymoons. We actively engage in trade shows and expos worldwide, focusing on romance and weddings, where we directly interact with couples to understand their preferences and suggest tailored options to meet their needs, as well as with wedding specialists and planners.”
What is it about Costa Mujeres and Cancun that make them a favourite for destination weddings and honeymoons?
EP: “Both Costa Mujeres and Cancun are highly soughtafter due to several key factors. Firstly, the natural beauty of both places is undeniable, with pristine beaches and turquoise waters. Cancun's hotel zone is especially popular due to its dual offering of beautiful beachfront and stunning lagoons, which are perfect for sunsets. On the other hand, Costa Mujeres is famous
for its seaweed-free beaches. Both destinations offer a diverse range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. From luxurious resorts to boutique hotels, there are options for everyone, including adults-only and family-friendly options. Both locations also offer a wide range of activities and attractions for couples and their guests to enjoy during their stay before or after the wedding. These include water sports, cultural excursions, fine dining experiences, and vibrant nightlife. Plus their wedding services. Both Cancun and Costa Mujeres are equipped with experienced wedding planners, vendors and venues that specialize in hosting weddings and honeymoons. This ensures that couples can enjoy a seamless and stress-free planning experience. Moreover, because of the location, it is easy for vendors to provide services. Finally, accessibility and flight connectivity. Both Cancun and Costa Mujeres are easily accessible from Cancun International Airport, which makes it convenient for couples and their guests to travel to the destination for their special day. The airport has direct flights to 18 cities in Canada, 38 cities in the United States, 19 cities in Europe and 19 cities in Latin America.”
Do you consult with the resorts that provide wedding services?
EP: “We stay in regular communication with various resorts to keep ourselves updated with any changes regarding their venues, news and any other relevant information. Our approach to working with resorts involves inviting them to be co-exhibitors at trade shows that we attend. This way, they can promote their resort under the brand of the Mexican Caribbean. We provide a variety of events such as Wedding Salon, Romance Travel Show, LGBTQ wedding expo, and so on, and they can choose which ones to participate in. We always have a representative from the Mexican Caribbean present to assist couples with more options. We also maintain a database of resorts that we can recommend to couples when they require specific information.”
How easy (or difficult) is it to get married in your beautiful part of the world?
EP: “In the Mexican Caribbean, getting married is not difficult at all. Legal weddings, multicultural weddings, and ceremonies whether cultural, religious, or LGBTQoriented, are all seamlessly accommodated. Hotels and private venues in the Mexican Caribbean are wellprepared to host a wide range of events, ensuring that every couple's unique needs and preferences are met.
They actively seek certifications such as South Asian wedding certifications or LGBTQ certifications, and even educational programs to provide the best experience to people with disabilities while attending an event. This commitment to diversity and inclusivity makes the Mexican Caribbean a welcoming destination for all types of weddings. You can find requirements for legal weddings on our webpage: Find a List of Marriage Requirements in the Mexican Caribbean.”
EP: “Choosing a destination or hotel for a wedding can be challenging due to the multitude of options available. We recommend seeking out wedding planners first. Wedding planners are experienced professionals who can offer valuable guidance and assistance in selecting the perfect destination for this day. We have built a database of wedding specialists whom we have personally met and established relationships with. What we offer them is knowledge and updates about our beautiful destination so they can pass that on to their future customers. Attending expos and events dedicated to weddings is also a great way for couples to gain knowledge and insights from experts in the industry about all of the options. In Quintana Roo, there is a vast selection of renowned vendors available to ensure that couples can enjoy the most important day of their lives stress-free.”

When it comes to paradise on earth, you’d be hardpressed to find a spot as beautiful and tropical as Nassau & Paradise Island in The Bahamas. Known for its magical beaches, swaying palms and world-class hotels and resorts, the dual-city destination has become a favourite choice among destination couples, for countless reasons.
An emerging trend in 2024 that highlights the destination’s appeal is welcome parties and farewell events. The welcome party sets the tone for the celebration ahead, giving guests the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant Bahamian culture from the getgo. Picture beachside bonfires with live performances, tropical cocktails and locally-inspired cuisine.
On the flip side, a farewell dinner allows wedding couples to bid adieu to their guests in style, sending them off with a lasting image of The Bahamas. A perfect way to cap off the ultimate wedding weekend is by chartering a boat for a Paradise Island Sunset Cruise, something friends and family will never forget.
Having a destination wedding in Nassau & Paradise Island is a great opportunity to highlight Bahamian culture. Hiring local wedding planners and vendors will not only help the local economy, it also adds authentic flair to any
destination wedding. Couples can include special touches by serving traditional dishes, or even commission a local artisan to create wedding favours, like traditional straw crafts, for their guests.
Adding a personal touch is a great way for wedding couples to tell their guests that they’re glad they came. In Nassau & Paradise Island, couples can create a welcome basket filled with local treats and information about the destination. They can also organize personalized activities such as a guided tour of Nassau’s historical forts, plan an eco-tour or visit various parks or gardens. This will ensure guests feel valued and connected to the destination.
Nassau & Paradise Island boast pristine, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, making beach wedding ceremonies a timeless choice. For an alternative to sunsoaked celebrations, couples can also opt for a moonlit beach wedding to set a romantic mood. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of daylight or the subtle romance of moonlight, beach ceremonies in this tropical paradise offer an enchanting backdrop for a couple’s dream day. The sky, the sand, the sea – it’s a winning trifecta, the simplest of ingredients, the cornerstone of the best, most relaxing honeymoon imaginable. And among the dozens of islands and cays of the Turks and Caicos, a romance-seeker will find these soothing elements set within myriad permutations of a thousand shades of blue.
This British territory, two sets of tropical islands separated by the Turks Island Passage, sits at the south end of the Bahamas, just north of the Dominican Republic. Nine inhabited islands play host to about 1.5 million visitors each year – and you could join them.
“Beautiful by nature” is more than just a clever marketing slogan here, it is a reality. The cerulean waters, soft trade winds, white sand, limestone cliffs and tropical dry forest create an idyllic environment. The sun shines an incredible 350 days of the year.
Grace Bay Beach, on the island of Providenciales, is where most of the nation’s top resorts are congregated. Little wonder: this five-kilometre stretch of sand is continually voted the best beach in the world in the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards – no rocks, no seaweed, no pollution. Taken with its neighbours Leeward Beach and Bight Beach, the strip is just over 11 kilometres. A barrier reef about 1.6 kilometres offshore keeps the waters safe and calm.
Off to the quiet side, on what is the roomiest section of Grace Bay Beach, away from the family all-inclusives and personal watercraft sits your honeymoon home base, the Wymara Resort and Villas. A stretch of umbrellas the colour of the sand couldn’t be more inviting and there is seemingly never a lineup for chairs – just pick your spot and the towels appear.
The Canadian-owned Wymara, part of the Leading Hotels of the World collection, turned the pandemic down-time into a productive $10 million renovation. A modern, beach-chic feel draws a younger clientele into the 90 rooms and suites, all with large bathrooms, luxe amenities, roomy seating and stocked kitchens. Honeymooners settle into quiet, private cabanas on the beach or around the 650-square-metre infinity pool, which looks out to the sea beyond. The resort’s Caribbean-forward Indigo is the number-one restaurant in town, as is the weekly beach barbecue, which brings everyone together on the sand for fried fish, smoked brisket, grilled lobster and live music. Those looking for
more privacy, a bit more space or a few more bedrooms, opt for the Wymara Villas on the south side of the island on Turtle Tail Bay, an ever-growing string of palatial multi-bedroom, multi-level luxury apartments. Astoundingly, the water is even more aqua over here.
Providenciales has a plethora of other Grace Bay luxury, with honeymoon-worthy elegance and service to be found at a number of storied resorts, including The Palms, The Shore Club and The Ritz-Carlton. Just offisland, the upscale seclusion of Parrot Cay, Pine Cay and Ambergris Cay also yields a wealth of papering and privacy for special-occasion celebrants.
The scuba diving is splendid, the coral reefs and marine life truly vibrant and the excellent visibility a welcome plus. The variety, too, is special, with adventurers able to choose from beach diving, cruise diving, wreck and reef diving – all available within a very short distance of each other. There are plenty of little nooks and crannies to go snorkelling in as well, with the equipment easy to procure, most often from the resort itself.
Boat charters take anglers out to fish the wide-open sea or simply sail around the coastline with cocktails in hand. Whale-watching from December to March draws boats to the passage between the Turks and Caicos islands to see humpbacks making an annual migration to their winter breeding grounds farther south.
Parasailing? For sure. Paddling of all kinds can occupy a relaxing few hours, too. Active visitors can also take lessons in kite-surfing, kite-boarding and wind-surfing, as well as waterskiing and wake-boarding.
Travel agents and wedding planners can work directly with Wymara’s event planning team to create dreamy destination weddings for their clients ranging from the most intimate affairs to larger events up to 200+ guests. Regardless of the occasion, travel agents earn commission on the room portion of every booking. More information on weddings at Wymara is available at wymara.com/weddings; visittci.com

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Twenty-seven guests travelled from Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Montreal and Florida to join this Ottawa couple at the Riu Palace in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Looking good The bride wore a stunning dress by Calla Blanche (purchased at Sinders Bridal House) and the groom wore the perfect blue suit from RW&CO.
Perfect planning Stacey felt like planning a destination wedding was a breeze for one reason. “I think overall it was very easy because we had hired the planner (Julie Thivierge, Wedding in the Tropics) right from the start. What we thought was a bit trickier was bringing all our decorations that we made at home to the final
destination. Other than that, it went very smoothly.”
Making memories “Our favourite part was not only the wedding night, but also getting to spend the entire week with our closest friends and family and having made so many precious memories,” says Stacey. “I think the guests will mostly remember all the fun times and all the laughs we had at every dinner together, pool party and private yacht party.”
Words of wisdom Hire a planner, says Stacey. “I cannot recommend enough to get a planner that can take on most of the stress of communicating (possibly in a foreign language) and supporting you in every step of the way.”

Maui, Hawaii
Haiku Mill, located in Maui, Hawaii, set the breathtaking scene for this destination wedding. With 15 sets of eyes upon them, the bride (in an Alena Leena gown) and groom (in an Atelier Munro suit) said, “I do” in one of the most unique venues in the world.
Post-COVID planning “Since we weren’t entirely sure whether we would be able to get married because of the pandemic, we made the majority of the decisions within three months of the wedding date,” says Justina. “It was pretty stressful not being able to feel, touch or taste what we were choosing but at the same time, it wouldn’t matter if the décor or food sucked – because we
would have been one of the lucky few to get married.”
The perfect spot Justina says her favourite thing about the wedding was the beautiful venue itself. “The experience is surreal. We were also blessed with a light spritz of rain during the ceremony – it was as if my grandma was telling me she was watching over me that day. The venue speaks volumes and doesn’t need much décor; it alone is an experience unlike any other.”
Advice from the bride “Try to make it into a family/friend vacation, but also take time for you and your partner. We spent one week in Maui with friends and family, and then we parted ways for a mini honeymoon.”

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
They met at age six, grew up together and were prom dates! After post- secondary school, they took a chance on love. Less than five years later, they married at Kukua Beach Club, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Canada wide Fifty guests travelled from Ottawa, Edmonton, British Columbia, Quebec and Toronto.
First look The couple agrees that the best part of the big day was the first look, which the bride was against in the beginning. Randall says, “I would recommend it to anyone now. You get such raw and real photos from it and it helps ease any nerves before the ceremony.”
Special details “Guests have told us they were blown away with the amount of detail that went into the whole day,” says Randall. “The flowers, the little personalized placemats, the seating chart photos, the head table’s hanging lights and greenery – it was obvious that a lot of planning went into the day.” (Weddings by Mayte planned the event.)
Some advice Randall says, “Because planning a destination wedding is mainly through e-mail, be as clear as you can with what you want. Use pictures and Pinterest for reference, and ask as many questions as you want, even if you think they are silly. We also communicated with previous brides at Kukua through Facebook.”

Rica
Hotel Costa Verde set the scene for this couple and their 30 guests. Monkeys, a BBQ dinner and custom piñatas helped to create an unforgettable event.
Favourite part During the intimate and emotional ceremony, monkeys came out of the trees just as Kelly began walking down the aisle! Also, the Costa Rican BBQ dinner was amazing.
Unique ideas Instead of a cake cutting, Kelly and Andrew did piñatas! They had bride and groom stuffed with mini liquor bottles and candy. Needless to say, the guests were very happy to participate.
Toughest part to plan Kelly says it was whether to wear her hair up or down! “It seems so small, but I
agonized about it! My hair is my favourite physical feature about myself – but with the heat and humidity I decided to go for a more classic updo. Beach waves, or even my regular curls, were no match for the Costa Rican afternoon sun!”
The bride has a few tips. First, get a wedding planner – it really eliminates stress. Second, hire a great photographer (it will be worth every penny). And lastly, “Sprinkle in some wow-factor. For us it was the piñatas, sangria bar and taco bar.”
Overall experience “The number of guests, the different culture and all the personal touches of doing it ‘off the resort’ made it the best day. We are so happy!”
The opportunities for adventure, relaxation, romance, and exploration in Costa Rica are unlimited, making it one of the most visited international destinations in Central America.
