REMEMBERING ...

Ellie Ziegler By Bill Dougherty

It’s hard to find words to describe one of the most beautiful people you have ever met. The 1996 Fashionality/Trendsetter Ellie Ziegler quietly passed away in late December after a long illness. She had an extraordinary personality, the kind that would illuminate the room the second she entered. She was stunningly beautiful and never met a stranger. I was a reporter the night she was presented to the community as a Fashionality in 1996. She received a standing ovation when she walked the runway. It was a magnificent evening. Ellie later joined the Trends Charitable Fund (TCF) board for two terms and, together with her husband Mike, donated heavily to the TCF. But that was just the tip of the iceburg. Ellie moved to the Valley in the 1970s and received a degree in communications from ASU. She would remain bound to the university for the rest of her life. Ellie would go on to a successful career with the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and later WestCor, where she would become iconic for her effortless public relations style and approach. Valley Leadership would eventually grant an award titled the “Ellie Ziegler Woman of the Year Award.” The title of the award surprises no one who knew the famous yet always understated socialite. The commitment Ellie and Mike Ziegler gave to our community was more than impressive. Their support of Boys and Girls Clubs of Scottsdale, McCormick Railroad Park, college athletics, education, healthcare and SMOCA, were all met with boundless financial support as well as personal dedication. Ellie was an amazing force for the Fiesta Bowl for more than two decades. It was there that she fostered a magnificent relationship with Nikki Balich. She would sponsor Nikki to become the recipient of the Trendsetter honor in 2018. Like Ellie, Nikki would go on to become one of the most amazing Trends Charitable Fund board members imaginable! Ellie Ziegler was so many things to so many people. My wife Beth and I considered her one of our greatest friends. We all used to lunch together at two of our very favorite spots: the Neiman Marcus Café and the Sanctuary Resort. We met early last summer as we did each quarter. When I called Ellie last fall to arrange a luncheon date, she said she just didn’t feel well. I never dreamed we would never speak again. Ellie to us and so many others was a beacon of light in a dark storm. She was the girl next door who was always happy to assist with whatever she could do. Her presence in our community both social and philanthropic will be missed by so many. She will be missed more than I can ever describe in pen and ink. To know Ellie Ziegler was to love her.

Let’s start with the more-than-impressive Board of Visitors luncheon. The chilly afternoon was a smashing success and chaired by Cindy Good and Sally Guenther. The sold-out luncheon was pretty in pink and apple green with all things festive. People are talking about Geri Farr, the delightful Dallas transplant. She is someone to watch ladies and gentlemen and she was there too! Donna Johnson and Lisa Shapiro breathed new energy and excitement into the Phoenix Art Museum shortly before Christmas with yet another sold-out luncheon. Donna, Lisa, and their fantastic committee shone brightly. The Arizona Costume Institute Holiday Luncheon was a brilliant afternoon filled with some of the finest ladies and gentlemen in town. Boy, were they all dressed to the nines? Markus Ford dropped by, and we think he’s another person like Ms. Farr that needs to be on everyone’s social radar.

This time both the 2020 and 2021 debs were presented. What a night! GOTCHA! Apparently a luncheon goer, who is a bit too overfed for the mini skirt she was wearing, simply couldn’t wait to retrieve her nouveau riche auto. After trying to bribe and then finally shouting at overworked valet parkers, she lost it, leaving other well-heeled luncheon guests horrified! Juvederm Voluma

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is a facial filler made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps to bind water to cells. Its extensive cross-linking helps to provide an excellent lifting capacity, making it an excellent choice for restoring volume in the cheeks and midface.

WHAT IS JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC? As you age, the cheeks may flatten and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin's surface, which provides lift and contour to the cheek area.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC provides natural-looking and long-lasting results that last up to 2 years with optimal treatment.

Unique combinations, such as an emerald shaped center with pear side stones, or an aquamarine center with round side stones, give customers the opportunity to personalize and customize. COMPANY PROFILE: MOON RIVER BEEF

Raising Beef Reflecting Practices That Were Used for Centuries How did you get into the beef industry? The Khan family owns a ranching operation in in Perkinsville, AZ, which is about 23 miles outside of Chino Valley, right on the Verde River. Before last year, we sold our calves in the traditional way, by taking them to the auction house each season. We would look on to see that our calves were sold to out of state feedlots and pumped up with hormones and antibiotics. We decided that there must be a better way to market our animals. Something more local, transparent and sustainable that would lead to better beef. Why did you start a new business during the pandemic? We started Moon River Beef one year ago during the height of the pandemic. During that time, some interesting things began happening in terms of people’s relationship to their food. First, people began avoiding grocery stores and exploring other options. Second, they became more interested both in where their food came from and in creating a connection with the food they were consuming. We noticed that people wanted to understand how their food was grown, and to be a part of that, in some sense. Many of our friends began asking about our beef and whether we sold it to the public. This was the beginning of our journey not only into selling beef, but also into reshaping how we viewed our role in agriculture. We put an incredible amount of time and energy into incorporating techniques that lead to high quality and healthy beef. Sourcing local, and all-natural feeds for our cows and steers is just as important to us as the traditional, holistic cattle handling techniques that we had been practicing for years. Moon River Beef is constantly searching for better ways to do things so that we can always provide the best beef possible. What sets your product apart? Moon River Beef is an all-natural beef company. We use holistic practices that incorporate the cattle into the natural environment, so that everything we do is completely sustainable. Our cattle are raised in the gentle banks and mountainsides of the Verde River Valley. All of our animals are on pastures that run along the Verde Rive river, giving them unparalleled access to natural grasses, plant life, and free-flowing water. Our beef is nutrient and mineral rich in addition to being delicious. Our process for raising beef reflects traditional practices that were used for centuries before cattle were placed in feedlots and fed mostly corn. We feed a mix of wild grasses and natural grains. This leads to healthier beef. Explaining this concept was difficult at first because of what people have been taught about grocery-store beef. Grocery store beef for the most part is fed out at a feedlot pumped with antibiotics to keep the calf from becoming ill from the conditions, and pumped with antibiotics to grow it faster. The less days in the feedlot, the cheaper the beef becomes. ‘Grass-fed’ beef is also misleading the consumer. Many ranchers who sell grass-fed are not “certified grass-fed, they are not audited which means that normally the rancher pulls the old cows from the range that are no longer producing calves, and have them slaughtered and sold. This leads to tough, chewy and gamey tasting meat. All of our beef is certified and audited: no hormones or antibiotics, age and source verified, certified grass-fed for our grass-fed beef. Many say you offer some of the best beef in the world. Our animals are non-hormone treated and free from antibiotics, they are age and source verified making them totally transparent so that the consumer can trace the animal from birth to the plate. Each year we select the best of our herd to create incredible beef for

www.moonriverbeef.com you and your family. Our prize part of our herd is the Golden Angus, which is a breed of cattle that we have developed throughout the years on our ranch. These cattle trace their origins back 150 years in the Verde Valley. And because of the area’s unique topography, they have developed characteristics that lead to incredibly tender and delicious beef. I can say with confidence it is better than any beef you have ever eaten. Is your beef considered “Farm to Table?” Unlike other beef businesses, we are responsible for each step of the process, which makes us truly local, and fully accountable. Additionally, we take the time to feed our steers slowly, by hand and with only the best feeds so that the steak that is on your table is tender, marbled, and full of rich and nuanced flavor. We sell both grass-fed and grain finished beef. We sell to farm-to-table restaurants and individuals throughout the state and directly to the consumer. Further, we custom cut each piece for each customer. We typically sell directly to consumers in packs of 1/8 (50lbs), 1/4 (100lbs), 1/2 and whole. Each cut is vacuum sealed and freezer ready. We do have special packages available as well, as listed in our website and email blasts. The packages vary by holiday and time of year.

COMPANY PROFILE: AZADVANCES

AZAdvances Creates an Opportunity for Donors and Supporters What was your background prior to starting this company? Following a 20-year career at Arizona’s largest publicly traded company, I was able to devote more time to support key non-profit organizations here in Arizona. I have served as Chairman of the Board of the Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship Foundation since 2006 and served as president and CEO of the Arizona Bioindustry Association (AZBio) for over a decade. Tell us a little bit about what your company does? The Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship Foundation, OTEF for short, is a 501c3 public charity that educates and invests in people and organizations that create hope. OTEF’s annual entrepreneurship conferences served as a catalyst for what is today a thriving technology ecosystem here in Arizona. OTEF’s D3Bio initiative has provided opportunities for over 1,000 Arizona students to showcase their work and make connections with industry leaders. Our newest initiative, AZAdvances will support the creation and commercialization of the Arizona-based health innovation that patients are waiting for. What made you decide to create AZAdvances? Over the last two decades, more than $23 billion was invested by government, companies, and philanthropists to create Arizona’s bioscience sector. We’ve seen the creation and growth of TGen, the Biodesign Institute at ASU, and the BIO5 Institute at UArizona just to name a few. Our hospitals are now world class. We have made phenomenal progress, but there is one area where we must improve. That is where AZAdvances comes in.

24

How do you hope to solve great health challenges? The missing piece in Arizona’s health innovation ecosystem is the early-stage investment that enables a discovery to begin the journey to become a health innovation. AZAdvances’ evergreen, non-profit model will allow a wide range of Arizona-based discoveries to begin the development process so that more treatments and cures can benefit patients. What is the best way to make your company a household name? One of our greatest challenges has been the “who knew” effect. People in our community often hear about the amazing work being done at our universities and hospitals. What we rarely hear about are the exciting health innovations being developed by Arizona life science entrepreneurs. Thanks to partnerships with AZBio, AZ Big Media, ABC15, Trends, and others, we are getting the word out. Since 2020, over 1.6 million people have had the opportunity to learn more about the impact Arizona life science innovators are making. Where do you see AZAdvances five years from now? Today, we are working to build a $200 million endowment and a $50 million current use fund that will support the development of Arizona-based health innovations forever. By meeting our goals today, we will have created a catalyst for the growth of Arizona’s life science sector. Arizona discoveries will be progressing in the development process. New, highquality jobs will have been created, and Arizona will have progressed from a topemerging bioscience state to a leading bioscience state. Most importantly, patients with un-met medical needs will have more hope.

What do you consider your greatest challenge? Just as young companies struggle to find their initial investors, philanthropic support for a new, large-scale initiative like AZAdvances can be challenging. It also creates a wonderful opportunity for the donors and supporters who engage early and wish to be part of shaping the future of health innovation here in Arizona. How can the social community benefit from your work? 2020 and 2021 have been challenging years for all of us. In 2022, as the AZAdvances Capital Campaign moves into full swing, volunteers and donors will have the opportunity for small group visits to meet some of these exciting young companies and to learn more about future health innovations that can make life better for people in Arizona and around the world. The greatest benefit of all, is the knowledge that as part of the AZAdvances team, you are working to make in impact in people’s lives today and for generations to come. Help Women and Men Navigate the Devastating Process of Divorce What made both of you get into this business? Sheri had wanted to do something to help women and men navigate the devastating process of divorce for sometime but couldn’t find the right person to partner with. When she read a cryptic Facebook post from Amy, a friend she had known since their children were in pre-school together, she reached out to re-connect. After talking at great length about the incredible challenges and demands of going through a divorce, they knew if there was someone to have held their hand and guide them through the most difficult time of their lives by helping them uncover all the things they did not know, it would have made such a difference in the emotional and financial outcomes of their divorces. What background did you have that qualified this decision? Both Amy and Sheri had long-term marriages (24 and 18 years respectively) and during their lengthy divorces with many entanglements, it was deemed necessary to put a team of experts together to represent each of them in the process. Knowledge is power and they knew they needed to help other people navigate through a separation or divorce. What did both of you do prior to launching this business? un*tied is Amy’s second business. Her first baby is an event, marketing and publicity firm called EMP Management specializing in non-profit events, sponsorship procurement and fundraising. Sheri co-owned a full service advertising agency for more than a decade. She negotiated with local/national media groups all the while learning from numerous diverse digital platforms that presented never ending changing technology. How do you give someone “Your Best New Life?” There are no two situations that are exactly alike and Amy and Sheri’s primary objective is to share knowledge and empower their clients to set goals and benchmarks and help them achieve those goals. The complexity of making monumental life altering decisions can literally drop you to your knees. Initially, most people either considering separation or divorce or are in the process are faced with fear of the unknown and are confused about the process so organization and information is key. What financial suggestions do you give to your clients? Amy and Sheri want their clients to be fully prepared for their negotiations and future divorce settlements with as much financial

26

knowledge of their situation as possible. A comprehensive and methodical financial checklist provides them a guide to collect all of the key information necessary to paint their financial picture and get a clear understanding of what’s at stake. This will ultimately help clients save time and money as well as be organized and ready for when they meet with their attorneys. What steps do you take to get people back on the right track? Amy and Sheri understand that divorce is like a death and there is a grieving process with many layers. They want their clients to know that during these dark and challenging times taking care of their health and well-being is essential to leading them to happier times and a bright light at the end of this difficult journey. Are most of your clients female or male? un*tied’s current client base is predominantly female and Amy and Sheri have recently worked with men as well. Gender doesn’t play a role in the complexity of an inevitable separation or divorce. Where do you hope to see this business in five years? Amy and Sheri see un*tied thriving with clients and providing the necessary support to their affiliates within their A-Z concierge services. They envision putting their expertise into action by expanding their business model to other major markets as well as creating support groups, conferences, retreats and speaking engagements. ENTERTAINING IDEAS: 1. Start setting the table

Welcome to 2022! Why not trip the light fantastic and invite your friends to dinner to celebrate the old and bring in the new! Encourage them to share the joys they experienced in 2021 and their expectations for the new year. Determine the date, guest list, menu and create a theme. I love butterflies and all they represent.

Set the stage by creating a magical table. One that sparkles, shines, reflects and glitters; ambiance is everything. The secret of all table settings is the element of surprise. Consider covering your table with extra duty aluminum foil or silver mylar. Add crystals, mirrors, pearls, candles and butterflies. Craft stores are filled with treasures for decorating your table. Perhaps you have a storeroom of items to be shared. I added butterflies throughout my table setting. Butterflies symbolize rebirth, beauty, balance, hope, transformation and the changing colors of life. I went online to learn more about butterflies. I shared my knowledge with my guests. Then I asked each guest to describe how they feel about butterflies. Creating conversation invites guests to participate and share their ideas with everyone. SPOTLIGHT: BARROW NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Behind the Scenes at Barrow’s Neuro Night What is Neuro Night? Cheryl: Neuro Night is in part, a celebration of the grand opening of the new, state-of-the-art Neuroplex building, within the Barrow Neurological Institute. Donna: We are looking forward to hosting an incredibly unique, sensory experience that helps continue support of the cuttingedge research that takes place at Barrow, every day. Cheryl: It’s truly amazing, being involved with this brilliant organization. Dr. Lawton and the Barrow team have saved and improved so many lives. What has been the most challenging element, planning this event? Donna: We didn’t anticipate how much work goes into the planning an inaugural event. Nothing about the process has been a ‘plug-and-play’, however the innovation happening at Barrow makes it truly, a worthy cause. Cheryl: The event is being hosted in a completely raw space. While I love working with a blank canvas, the logistics involved, transforming the space into a multi-dimensional, experiential night, has required a special level of planning. The event is really going to make all of your senses tingle! What have you been most grateful for, getting Neuro Night organized? Donna: Honestly, this event is nothing without our committee members, and the staff at Barrow Neurological Foundation. Our goal is to knock this event out of the park, and that comes with some aggressive, challenging requests of our team and the people in our community.

34

Donna Johnson, Sharon Stone, Michael T. Lawton and Cheryl Najafi

Cheryl: She’s so right. We’ve received so much support from everyone – The Barrow Board of Trustees, the committee, sponsors, donors and the Barrow Foundation team, we’re really having our ‘wish list’ turn into reality. What’s on your Neuro Night ‘wish list’? Donna: Well, if you know anyone who wants to contribute a once-in-a-lifetime, stellar experience for the live auction package, tell them to call us! Cheryl: Yes, call us! We are currently planning to auction off a package for unprecedented access to the McLaren F1 Grand Prix de Monaco. We also have a gorgeous LA Rams gameday package, that includes private air travel, transportation to and from Sofi Stadium, and a state-of-the-art stadium suite. Donna: There’s also a luxury getaway to the Renaissance Club Scotland, a Riviera Golf Club experience, and a 5-night stay at Steven Tyler’s Maui beach house. Talk to us about the entertainment. Donna: It’s going to be amazing. Sharon [Stone], the impetus of this whole event, is so charismatic. When she walks into a room, her energy is visceral – you pay attention. Cheryl: Guests are going to arrive to the Barrow Blue Carpet with Celebrity host, Melissa Rivers. It’s going to be a riot!

Donna: We also have Marilu Henner signed up as our Master of Ceremonies. Have you seen her on the 60-Minutes episode, about people who remember every second of their life? She is literally going to blow your mind. Cheryl: Broadway actress, singer and producer, Joely Fisher is bringing her world-class talent and expertise, creating the run-of-show, which will include some incredible performances alongside her. With Joely at the helm, the night will be a sensory medley of song, dance, and comedy and in a way most of us have never experienced. What’s in store for sponsors and donors participating at the event? Cheryl: Any ticket to this event will yield a night worth remembering. With our raw event space set up as theatre in the round with jazz club style seating, our guests will have an intimate connection with the night’s performances. The perks that accompany event sponsors at the $100K level and above are also quite dazzling. You’ll get elite access to a VIP dinner party with Sharon along with many other surprise guests that night and haute cuisine from Chef Beau McMillian of the Sanctuary Resort.

Have you thought about what you’re going to wear? Donna: Neither of us have gotten that far, but we do know Sharon will be wearing an exquisite necklace, to be featured in the live auction. Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend. How can people participate with Neuro Night? Cheryl: Go to NeuroNight.Org to buy tickets, or to explore VIP sponsorship opportunities. You really don’t want to miss this event.

THE MILLER SISTERS

The Most Glamorous Sisters of All Time By Spoiled Serena Today when you think of glamorous sisters, most immediately think of the Kardashian and Jenner families. However, when they are in diapers or going through adolescence in the 1990s, there are three sisters who are the epitome of glamour and high society and they are, the Miller Sisters. The glamorous trio consists of Pia Getty, MarieChantal, Crown Princess of Greece, and Princess Alexandra von Fürstenberg. They are the daughters of American born duty-free billionaire, Robert Warren Miller and his very elusive and glamorous Ecuadorian wife, María Clara “Chantal” Pesantes Beccera Miller. This article will focus on their utterly international privileged background, high-born husbands, grand weddings, and their social downfall during the 2000s. The origins of the Miller Sisters begins in Hong Kong in the 1960s where hardworking businessman, Robert Warren Miller has his growing duty-free empire based and since his business is based out of airports, he and his wife, Chantal are always on the move. They move around so much that all three of their daughters are born in different

countries. First, Pia Christina Miller in New York City in October of 1966, followed by Marie-Chantal Claire Miller in London in September of 1968, and lastly Alexandra Natasha Miller in Hong Kong in October of 1972. Throughout their childhoods the Miller Sisters grew up mainly between Hong Kong, Paris, New York City, and Switzerland. The sisters’ early years are spent in Hong Kong since that is where their father has his business, Duty-Free Shoppers, based. They live on the very prestigious, Victoria’s Peak, which is still one of the most expensive residential areas in the world. They first attend the Peak School in Hong Kong, before moving on to the very exclusive and very elite, Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland. However, Marie-Chantal switches schools a bit more than her sisters. After leaving Le Rosey in the early 1980s, she transfers to the Ecole Active Bilingue in Paris where her family is mainly based at the time and they are living on the Île Saint-Louis in a hôtel particulier. She then goes on to The Masters School, a boarding school in Westchester County, New York. Also, because

her parents were traveling all over the world and her sisters were in boarding school also abroad, she was able to live alone at her family’s luxurious apartment at the Carlyle on the Upper East Side. That meant she gets to run around the city with Andy Warhol and the rest of the Factory scene.

Marie-Chantal’s Warhol portrait taken in 1985

Despite being the youngest sister, Alexandra makes the first grand romantic catch before her older sisters, Pia and Marie-Chantal. It happens on a day in 1987, when 14-year-old Alexandra is walking home to The Carlyle in New York City. She gets on the elevator and encounters the dashing 17-year-old Prince Alexander von Fürstenberg. Alexander is the son of the Austro-Italian aristocrat and Fiat heir, Prince Egon von Fürstenberg and fashion designer, Diane von Fürstenberg. Alexandra knew this was the man she was going to marry. However, they do not start dating officially until she turns eighteen. During the late 1980s also, the eldest sister, Pia starts dating Christopher Getty, an heir to the Getty Oil fortune and grandson of J. Paul Getty. Marie-Chantal’s grand catch happens in the early 90s as a friend sets her up on a blind date. The blind date happens to be Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece who is an exiled crown prince and son of Greece’s last king, King Constantine II. He is also of Danish royal blood as his mother, Queen Anne-Marie is a Danish princess by birth and sister of the reigning queen, Queen Margrethe II. They both knew it was love at first sight. The years 1992-1995 are when all the grand romantic catches of the Miller Sisters become their trophy husbands. Pia marries Getty Oil heir, Christopher Getty in 1992 in a lavish Bali wedding with a reported 300 guests on a mountaintop with Indonesian children dropping rose petals on them. Pia’s wedding is very much more intimate and lowkey than the weddings of her younger sisters. Next, Marie-Chantal marries her exiled crown prince, Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece in July of 1995 in London. Just two days before their wedding Marie-Chantal’s parents throw them the most lavish pre-wedding reception ever. It was held in the English countryside at an estate called Wrotham Park. There are over 1,200-1,400 guests and almost every European royal and aristocrat is there. Marie-Chantal’s mother, Chantal pays homage to her native Ecuador by ordering over 100,000 Ecuadorian roses at an estimated cost of $1 million. The reception goes on until 4 a.m. and the remaining guests enjoy a champagne breakfast. Marie-Chantal and Pavlos marry at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in London. Marie-Chantal’s wedding dress was designed by family friend, Valentino, and her dress costs between $225-$250,000 and for her wedding and the festivities her parents spend an estimated $8.5 million. She is now Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece. Alexandra’s New York wedding follows in October of 1995. She also has a lavish prewedding reception in Battery Park that was based on her native Hong Kong. Robert Isabell, the ultimate party planner who also did MarieChantal’s pre-wedding reception, planned her reception with the help of her mother, Chantal and Alexandra herself. The reception featured lavish tents that spanned three blocks and was decorated with Hong Kong and Chinese related designs and silks and was called the Alex Ball to play on the names of the bride and groom. The guests sipped their cocktails, as they watched the Grucci fireworks explode over the Statue of Liberty. The wedding takes place at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola Church on Park Avenue and Alexandra’s wedding dress is designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself and her guest list varies from celebrities like Dolly Parton, to aristocrats like her in-laws the von Fürstenberg’s, and exiled royalty like her other in-laws the deposed Greek Royal Family. She is now a princess also and her title is Her Serene Highness Princess Alexandra von Fürstenberg.

39

THE MILLER SISTERS – CONTINUED During the late 1990s to early 2000s, the sisters rule over Manhattan with their equally attractive trophy husbands. Not only did they have matching trophy husbands, they also felt the need to have matching Upper East Side townhouses and each sister owns their own by 2001. They also produce their gilded progenies of Getty heirs, exiled Greek royalty, and German aristocrats. However, their brief reign as it-girls and marriages are falling apart. As the 2000s emerged, the Miller Sisters’ poise, elegance, and grace is not what the media or people in general care to look at anymore. Wilder and younger socialites emerge like the Hilton Sisters, Nicole Richie, and Johnson & Johnson heiress, Casey Johnson. That made the Miller Sisters obscure at that point as the new breed of socialite were taking over with reality tv, tabloid scandals, and having their personal lives invaded by paparazzi. Adding more salt to the wounds is that Pia’s and Alexandra’s marriages are falling apart. The marriages are falling apart because their husbands, Prince Alexander von Fürstenberg and Christopher Getty are being unfaithful. Alexander is known to be a cheater since he and Alexandra began dating and they divorce in 2002. Christopher Getty’s cheating emerges around 2003 when he is seen with some Russian woman and Pia eventually divorces him by 2005. As of today, the Miller Sisters are leading very quiet yet glamorous lives. Pia is a socialite currently based in London living in a townhouse in Knightsbridge and hates being in the public eye so not much else is known about her besides she does some work as an independent filmmaker. Marie-Chantal, the most well-known of her sisters, is still happily married to her exiled crown prince husband, Pavlos, and they have five children together.

Pia & her daughter Isabel Getty at the 2021 Royal Ascot in England

After leaving New York around 2004 she and her family spent many years living in London, but are back in New York as of recently. She has her own childrenswear line aptly named MarieChantal and attends various royal events throughout Europe with her husband, especially in Denmark since the Danish royals are her in-laws. She currently resides at her family’s old 71st Street townhouse on the Upper East Side. Alexandra is based in Los Angeles now and has an acrylic furniture business named AVF Home. She also remarries to an architectural designer and developer named Dax Miller. She is currently residing in her ultra-modern H-shaped Holmby Hills mansion, which she designed herself. The Miller Sisters are now obscure to the masses, thanks to families like the Kardashians and Jenners. They represented a blend of a cultured international upbringing, nobility, and wealth and were the kind of socialites America may never see again. TRENDS IN DINING

Restaurant Progress – Unique to the Melrose District By Nicholas D. Butler Among the constellation of upstart restaurants that have recently opened in Uptown Phoenix, Restaurant Progress is a star that beckons to diners looking for a fresh perspective. Nestled in the former Melrose Pharmacy building, Restaurant Progress is a 30-seat passion project conceived by Chef TJ Culp that features an open kitchen, elegant bar, and quiet patio that serve as an intimate backdrop for the type of dinner you can build an evening’s conversation around. Spirited takes on classic cocktails as well as novel wine pairings from the neighboring Montecito Bottle Shop’s curated collection foreshadow the level of thought reflected in the constantly evolving dinner menu. Guests are given the option of ordering a la carte or “Leave it to the Kitchen” for a seven-course tasting menu ($150 per couple). Recent standouts from the autumn menu include Point Reyes oysters decadently stacked with steak tartare and caviar; a shaved Brussel sprout version of a Waldorf salad with walnut vinaigrette, blue cheese, apples, and grapes; roasted butternut squash with farro, sage, and pepitas; and an addictively spicy Creste di Gallo Rague pasta with Calabrian chili, olives, and Grana Padano cheese. Designed to offer 18 rotating dishes (essentially six cold appetizers, six hot appetizers, and six entrees), there’s always something new to sample – especially for those intrigued by lesser used ingredients like saba, guanciale, and gremolata.

44

Entering its fifth year, the hospitality staff at Restaurant Progress has clearly grown into a cohesive team that takes pride in their craft. Concise descriptions and subtle beverage service avoid unnecessary

breaks in the meal and allow the staff to focus on expediting courses without lulls in the pacing of dinner. A seasoned leader in front of house operations, Sommelier Oscar Avila is an inspiring source of recommendations for wine pairings from reserve vintages as well as emerging producers. Similarly, mixologist Manny Peña is an expert at balancing cocktails as well as engaging with guests seated at the bar. The kitchen and staff clearly value the opportunity to create a dialogue with guests looking for a new perspective on contemporary dining in Phoenix. From the historic architectural details and décor to the kaleidoscope of colors and flavors in the cuisine at Progress, it’s readily apparent that this neighborhood gem is positioned to become a cornerstone among the emerging generation of restaurants in the Valley. Restaurant Progress and the Montecito Bottle Shop are located at 702 West Montecito Avenue in the Melrose District. Reservations can be made by calling (602) 441-0553 or visiting www.exploretock. com. Accommodations are available for dietary restrictions or allergies with advance notice.

It’s All About Relationships By Jimmy Walker Jimmy Walker is a man who has seen it and done it all. His approach to all things famous has made him an iconic force in philanthropy, as well as in the ever-complicated world of celebrity shuffling. For more than six decades Mr. Walker has dedicated himself to helping others while bringing people together at the same time for fantastic results. In his memoir Mr. Walker gives us a glimpse into his structured Midwest upbringing and his decision to attend ASU in the early 1960s. At the time Phoenix had no freeways and little commerce. It did however have people that need life insurance, something he excelled at selling since his teenage years. But the Valley had more than just people who need insurance. It had the sun and in the 1970s exuded a resort-like setting on a bit larger scale than Palm Springs. This would help Mr. Walker establish several celebrity tennis tournaments and later Celebrity Fight Night where he would become iconic. This book is far more than interesting facts about athletes and movie starts. It’s about cultivating relationship between people and they way you treat them and being able to pick up the phone and ask someone for a favor. The result is a rewarding journey about not only people and different personalities but the philanthropic things we can accomplish together. We teach people how to treat us. Jimmy Walker understands the value in that and created a monumental charity gala and so much more along the way. Jimmy is a great American and this is a tremendous book. Anyone who attends sporting or charity events should read this. It’s that good!

A Year in Waiting By Nicholas D. Butler Nick Butler was no stranger to the world of waiting tables and working in different facets of the restaurant industry. A well-educated gentleman who eventually earned his PhD, he believed his scholastic career would center around education. But then he made the “mistake” of failing two football scholarship students whose decided not to attend his classes anymore. Mr. Butler’s world came undone. In this extraordinary and well-documented story, we find a man who is with odds with about everything in his life. His decision to enter the world of service/hospitality was a difficult, yet necessary, design to make ends meet. The result is a magnificent tale of the inner workings of a restaurant from the vantage point of a tremendous server at a very high-end eatery. While most of us take everything in the restaurant industry for granted, after you finish this well-crafted book, you will not. It serves as a fantastic inside look from the front of the house to the back of it and everything in between. Nick Butler has done the world a great service with his educated and gifted pen. He documents resonating memories of one year in the service industry recognizing its pitfalls and triumphs alike. The books serves as a labor of love and so much more. By the time you finish this you will likely have profound respect for everyone from the dishwashers and bussers to the chefs and proprietors of the establishments you choose to frequent. It’s an incredible journey.
