FIVE SECRETS TO THE PERFECT PAIR OF

CROPPED

PANTS Cropped pants, pedal pushers, capris, clamdiggers, shorts…. They may be known by many names but these short pants have become known and loved by women of all ages, shapes and sizes, and with good reason. Cropped pants offer a cool alternative to full-length trousers or jeans, and are perfect for summer weather. Capri pants became popular in the 1960’s with the Mary Tyler Moore show, and caused a bit of a stir. Today, Capris and cropped pants of all lengths have gone mainstream and are right on trend. Years ago, before I became a style coach and know what I know today, I had a pair of cropped pants that made me feel frumpy. The rise was too low, giving me a muffin top. The hemline stopped at the widest point of my calves and made my legs look much heavier than they were. And the whole look was just not right. Yet somehow I convinced myself to buy these horrible pants and wear them because I felt that I ‘should’ be able to pull off cropped pants, and that if I just lost a few pounds they’d be perfect. When wearing them on vacation, I remember feeling awful in them. But I was determined to wear what I had spent my hard-earned money on. Once home, I took a long look at a picture of myself in the pants and recoiled in horror. While I had no idea why they didn’t work (I thought it was because I was too fat), I got rid of the pants then and there. Years later, I found out why they weren’t right for me – and what I could have done differently - and now I want to save you from making the same mistake. While cropped pants may be popular, there is no one style that is right for everyone. There are several important factors that should be taken into consideration to ensure that you’re getting the best look for you. Finding the best style for your body isn’t just a matter of luck, or being born with legs for days. What matters is proportion. Once you crop your pants, the ratio of pant to leg becomes an important factor. When done right, your cropped pants can make you look inches taller and pounds thinner.

THE HEMLINE IS KEY

Where the hemline of your pants hits your leg is the number one consideration when determining what’s right for you. Make sure the hemline ends at the narrowest part of your leg. If it stops at the widest part of your calf, your legs will appear larger and shorter. Do not leave this to chance, for this can make your legs look much shorter/heavier than they are if it stops at the widest point.

STYLE FIT+ Perfect At Any Age

To determine where your pants should fall, find the widest point of your calf – this is where your pants should NOT stop. You want the hem of your pants to hit you above or below this line. Typically, just under the kneecap is more narrow and makes a good stopping point. If your calves are on the heavy side, then opt for ankle-grazing pants. With so many lengths of cropped pants available, don’t settle for one that isn’t right. Find one that is or have the longer pair tailored to suit you.

TAPERED OR FLARED

When your cropped pants are tapered, or slim-fitting, they create a harmonious silhouette against your leg. In short, the eye is drawn vertically and they have a slimming effect. A slight flare at the hemline can work for you as well, but avoid a full-on flare as it can create a horizontal visual, cutting your leg off and shortening you. Plus, you run the risk of looking like you’re wearing high-waters. A skinny or straight leg is your best bet. I’ve been putting many of my clients with a little extra around the middle in our skinny crops paired with a longer tunic and the effect is astounding! While the tunic has to be the right cut, a longer top that covers your bottom, it can visually take off pounds!

Cuffs on cropped pants and shorts can make your legs look heavier, and therefore are best on those with long, nimble legs. If your legs are shorter or heavier, staying away from a cuff is your best bet. If you do choose a cuff, select a cuff with a width that is proportionate to you. If you’re tall, you can wear a deeper cuff. If you’re of average height, a more narrow cuff will look better for you.

LOW CONTRAST

Take into consideration the contrast between your pants, shoes and skintone when wearing cropped pants. When you keep your pants and shoes in a tone not too far from your own skin, you create a lengthening effect. Dark pants create a stark contrast against pale skin. To counter the effect, keep your footwear in a color closer to your skintone than to your cropped pants. Many of my clients want to wear black cropped pants, but they don’t realize that the contrast with their pale skin is very harsh, especially when worn with black shoes. It is anything but slimming, and just not flattering. A white, midtone or bright would be a much better choice, paired with sandals in a nude or metallic tone. Teal and turquoise can also be a great choice for shoe colors, as these are ‘skin intensifiers’ and look gorgeous against your skin.

STYLE FIT+ Perfect In Any Size

SHOE IN

The shoes you sport with your cropped pants can have a big impact on your overall look. To create an elongated leg-line pair your cropped pants with heels or some of the season's hottest wedges. Flat shoes can give this look a dowdy appearance. Opt for a sandal, pump, wedge or flat-form to give you a little height while making you look sleek and chic! So now your only real dilemma with wearing cropped pants should be choosing a color! You’ll look chic and keep your cool too!

Scout & Molly’s (scoutandmollys.com) is one of the hottest boutiques in the Triangle. Owner Lisa Kornstein has used this super shop to help one of the most well known charities in the US: the National MS Society.

Launching in 2002, the Scout & Molly's boutique is named after Kornstein’s two Labradors. The business has grown over the years and is now franchising nationwide – with thirty-one locations including a Manhattan shop opening in the fall of 2015. Kornstein has two children, four dogs, and is marrying the love of her life this summer. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis seven years ago, she was in her early 30s and had to make the decision of whether to keep her illness a secret from the rest of the world, or put herself out there and risk being known as “the girl with MS.” Kornstein made the life altering decision to become a “face” for this crippling disease, using her position in the community to bravely face MS, and raise money and awareness by helping instead of hiding.

She realized that she was in an interesting and unique position as a retailer who got to meet new people every single day. Deciding it would be a waste not to take the opportunity to educate people and do something positive with a very serious life changing diagnosis, Kornstein became involved with the National MS Society. She’s had to learn how to take her foot off of the gas pedal and slow down from time to time. “If I go too hard, which is my nature, I end up getting sick and the goal is to stay healthy,” Kornstein said. Slowing down is hard for her, and it’s usually not until she starts feeling bad that she actually slows herself. “It’s made me appreciate everything – time with my kids, my fiancé, and so much more,” she said. RUNNING FOR RONAN

Struggling with a lifetime of weight issues is an epidemic for millions of Americans. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes and a list of not only physical problems that can affect your life negatively, but mentally as well. Alli Leggett, owner of The Pink Alli (thepinkalli.com), a hugely popular local boutique, grew up as an only child and graduated from Peace College with a Liberal Studies degree in 2001. She feels lucky to have followed her passion and taught dance until opening the boutique with her mother in 2007.

Leggett can relate to weight struggles and not only took matters into her own hands and has a handful of medals to show for it, she runs for a great reason. She started working out simply to lose weight and get healthy. As a dancer, Leggett always struggled with her weight – and wouldn’t always go about losing it the right way. Wanting muscle rather than bones, she decided to get fit rather than skinny. She started running and working out for a program called “I Run 4.” Leggett runs for a child named Ronan who has Trisomy 21. She runs with his name somewhere on her body and fills him in daily on the workouts she is doing for him. His name appears on her so that people will ask who he is and why she is competing for him – spreading awareness about his

In the beginning, she used to be intimidated by the gym and the people who were in there. But now Leggett is the only girl in her CrossFit class with the goal of beating the boys! She was never a morning person, but now bounces out of bed ready to workout. The training has taught her discipline, consistency, priorities, confidence and moderation. Leggett would like to see everyone get active. “We live in NC where we have the best weather to be outdoors all the time,” she said. “Even if it’s raining a little, it will make you feel tough to run in it!” Leggett recommends signing up for races that allow you to give back. Finding organizations that will buddy you with someone makes you more accountable as well as helping that someone live through you. “There is nothing like having that kind of cheerleader!” Leggett said. This is a great question! The neck is a tricky area to correct and there really are not many effective options outside of cosmetic surgery. Once the skin is loose the best way to treat it is to excise the excess skin; this should be done by a reputable board certified plastic surgeon. I am not a physician so I can not give medical advice, the above comment is merely my personal opinion. A surgeon would need to examine you to see what surgical option would be best for you as often times a less invasive procedure such as liposuction may suffice. There are a few non-invasive options as well such as Ultherapy, which is FDA approved to tighten areas such as the neck. This non-surgical cosmetic procedure uses ultrasound to stimulate the growth of new collagen deep within the skin. The treatment is known to be a little painful and results are not instant, with visible improvement being noted at the three to six month post treatment mark. There is no downtime and most patients of Ultherapy give it high marks as a non-surgical option. One other option in laser technology is SkinTyte by Sciton, which utilizes infrared energy to deeply heat soft tissue. Targeted heating causes soft tissue coagulation and collagen contraction. This process initiates the body’s natural healing process, resulting in a firmer, more youthful skin appearance. The full effect of skin firming treatments can be seen over several subsequent months. Lastly, there is a new FDA injectable product on the market, it is called Kybella and is used to dissolve moderate-to-sever submental fat below the chin. Again you will need to have an exam with a medical provider offering this new treatment to determine whether or not you are a candidate. If you have little to no excess fat but rather strictly loose skin this might not be the best course of treatment for you. As always, do your homework before selecting a provider/facility to treat this or any other concerns you have with your face/body!

Everyone loves a good wedding. There's something wonderful about being there, sharing in the happy couple's special day, that puts everyone involved in an elated mood. Being a guest also lets you enjoy the very best of the festivities, and even better, to do it with no planning, no worries and very few responsibilities. But there’s more to attending a wedding than getting dressed up, shedding a few tears and partying all night long: guests have an obligation to follow an unspoken code of behavior, both before and during the big day. If you’re not, however, too sure about what all these timeless traditions entail–such as gift giving and wedding day protocol–perhaps this short primer will set you on your way to being the perfect guest. LATE TO THE SERVICE We all know how it is–you have everything planned out perfectly in order to attend your oldest friend’s wedding. Then the phone rings, the dog is sick and the taxi driver can’t find the church without some divine intervention of his own! If by the time you finally arrive and you unhappily find the ceremony has already begun, then take your cue from the wedding or church coordinator who will allow you to enter as soon as Written by April Jones

there’s an opportunity. But if there’s no help in sight, do not interrupt. Instead, wait until after the wedding party has entered, then quietly slip in a side door and choose a seat in the back. If you cannot find an unlocked entrance anywhere, please don’t be tempted to knock in hope that someone will hear you and let you enter. Stay out! RSVP Your most important obligation as a guest is to respond to the invitation immediately, especially if you’re unable to attend. This allows your host and hostess enough time to give their caterer an accurate count. Usually there’s a card to return with your reply but, if not, you may write a formal reply or note indicating your intention. If you happen to lose either the invitation or RSVP, then call your hosts right away and let them know whether you’re able to intend; never just ignore it and show up on what you think is the right date. You could very well end up as an uncomfortable odd number that has not been added to the caterer’s list or even an embarrassing crasher at the wrong wedding if you get it really wrong!

UNFORGETTABLE PHOTOS As much as you would love to capture that perfect Kodak moment with a shot of the couple during the ceremony, remember they may find your camera's flash to be a distraction or nuisance. Even if the couple has a professional photographer present, proper etiquette requires you to refrain from taking pictures during the ceremony. Don’t worry about capturing any of those formal shots; these were already arranged by the couple. But do snap away during the reception at all those people dancing and enjoying themselves. Most receptions, although sometimes chaotic, are filled with lots of fun and laughter--something that poised, formal shots never really capture. MINGLING Usually the first thing you'll see at the reception is the receiving line. This is your chance to talk oneon-one with the couple, meet the bride or groom if you haven't yet, thank the parents for inviting you, etc. After the receiving line, it's time for the cocktail hour, when people mill around with drinks and hors d'oeuvres. This is the prime mingling time, so prepare to introduce yourself to anyone you don't

know and start by explaining your connection to the couple. However, try not to talk only to people with whom you're already acquainted. If there's a specific seating arrangement when it comes to dinner, the bride and groom have probably put you with people they thought you'd enjoy. Even though you may not know them, by the end of the meal you’re sure to be old friends. Don’t forget to keep an eye on how often your wine glass is refilled or these new associations could be short-lived ones! WHAT TO WEAR Try not to upstage the couple (which means don’t wear white and don’t be tempted to go more formal than you think the couple will be). And dress appropriately for the time of day and the setting. A Sunday afternoon wedding generally means a coat and tie for gentlemen and flowing dresses for ladies. An evening wedding, however, calls for floor length formal dresses and dinner suits. Unless the invitation specifically calls for it, never ever wear blue jeans, even if the invite says casual. Casual in this case means your best casual, not your weekend at home casual!

A wedding gift registry is literally a wish list of what the couple would like to receive and from where they would like it to come. They create their registries to not only save their guests time and effort, but also, to ensure they get exactly what they want. While it’s certainly nice to help the couple complete selections they have chosen, a unique gift can often be just as welcomed and this way you do have the liberty of selecting something more personal. SOME FINAL NOTES Surrounded by family, friends and well-wishers, the bride and groom may not be able to spend more than a few moments with each guest. So smile, have fun, and be content to share your time with the other guests. This is how you show your appreciation. Pierce believes that instead of trying to hide our bodies, we need to embrace what we have and find what flatters. When it comes to coverage, “Sometimes less is more,” explains Pierce, “ and too much fabric is just like a billboard across our butt which can actually highlight what we’re trying to hide.” She encourages her customers to be bold and try on suits they might normally wade past. There are several silhouettes that almost every body can wear - as long as they get the proper fit.

Your swimwear needs to hug, rather that squeeze, for a truly tug-free time at the beach. The standard American cut offers the fullest seat coverage, but Pierce suggests that sunbathers step up their game with the newer Intermediate cut. This style trims about 1/2” of fabric off the rear, which she claims, can actually help slenderize and won’t ride up if the fit is just right. Other styles to look for include boy shorts, which Pierce says, “are great for gals with slimmer hips and thighs.” Same goes for those trendy high-waisted suits. However, for her curvier customers, she suggest bottoms that sit just below the belly button. For those of us who are little braver, or who are just blessed with better butts, Pierce suggests you try on the Brazilian cut, which she explains is actually different from a thong, or the newer Cheeky/Latin style which has a wider band across the hip with a more open bottom, and are also super sexy. Not sure you can pull it off, Pierce suggests you take it on a test run while on vacation or in your back yard!

REUPHOLSTERY When it comes to reupholstering furniture, should you hire a professional or do it yourself? The art of reupholstering takes professionals many years to perfect and hone – so DIY is not traditionally recommended. It is the job of a skilled craftsman to cut the fabric to make sure the pattern on the inside back of a piece matches the seat cushion and outside back, and that the arms complement each other inside and out. Everything has to be centered and matched. Upholsterers must also be skilled at sewing as they remove the old fabric and use it as a pattern for the new. Dacron batting is then used on the cushions and back to give the “new” chair a crowned or full look.

When choosing a service provider, where should people go—a furniture store or professional upholstery service? You could go to an upholsterer; they may have fabric samples you can select and order from, but for the most part they specialize in upholstery labor only. If you opt for a fabric or furniture store to have your upholstery work done, they’ll have a much wider variety of fabrics as well as decorators to help you make the best selection for both quality and style. Ordering fabric and labor through one company makes for easier one-stop shopping, especially if you have any issues.

What are the best types of fabrics to use for these projects? A wide variety of upholstery fabric is available to choose from. Mostly, you’ll want a somewhat heavy fabric with a dense thread count. Look closely at a square inch of fabric to see the number of threads – the more the better because a higher count means the fabric is more durable (slightly less heavy fabric with more threads is better than a heavy fabric with fewer threads). You can also test a fabric by pulling on it diagonally. The fabric shouldn’t move or give too much in the direction of the pull because you want the threads to be stable once upholstered. Material with a lower thread count will not stand up well long-term because the individual threads are more exposed and will rub and wear quicker. You also wouldn’t want to use light fabrics such as silk or a faux silk as they will not last. In order to gauge durability, many fabrics have been tested to see how many “double rubs” they will take. Fabric manufacturers use a machine that rubs the fabric forward and back, making a double rub. A fabric with 20,000 double rubs means that no visible signs of wear occurred during the test. Normally, heavy-duty upholstery fabrics start at about 20,000 double rubs, but some fabrics can exceed 100,000 double rubs.

What costs should people expect? Depending upon where you have it done, there can be a wide fee range in the cost of reupholstering furniture. Normally, a fully reupholstered chair can run about $350, plus about eight yards of fabric. A standard sofa would cost just under $600, plus about 18 yards of fabric.

Any other advice you'd like to give readers, particularly about buying new furniture vs. reupholstering current pieces? The first consideration is: do you like

WHAT WOULD A NEW CUSTOMER TO SOHO CONSIGNMENTS BE SURPRISED BY WHEN VISITING FOR THE FIRST TIME? Most customers are quite taken back when they ﬁrst walk into SoHo Consignments. They are surprised at how well we vignette everything even though the items in a particular vignette aren't necessarily from the same consignor. Customers also are quite pleased at the quality of the pieces we take in. I have really great help here at SoHo and I think my employees love this store, customers, clients and selling furniture as much as I do and I've been told it shows.

DO A LOT OF YOUR PIECES COME FROM RALEIGH AND CARY? We do get a lot of clients consigning from Raleigh and Cary but you might be surprised to know that we have clients bringing us things from Rockingham, Vass, Southern Pines, Durham, Chapel Hill and quite frankly from all over the state and we have even had things come from Virginia. We love things from other parts of the state because they are usually one of a kind and that's what we are well known for, having those really unique pieces of furniture and accessories that you rarely or don't see anywhere else.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF TIME A PIECE STAYS ON THE FLOOR? Our inventory here at SoHo changes constantly. I would say an

average length would be 30 days or less. I'm always gettin customers that ask about an item they saw the week before and I usually have to tell them it has sold. "Should have bought it when I saw it" is our mantra. Things can sell out from under you while you're in the store if you don't pick it up when you see it or pull the tag and bring it to the checkout desk so you can continue o shop.

FOR ITEMS THAT ARE EXTREMELY HEAVY, CAN SOMEONE ARRANGE FOR A PICK UP? We've done all the hard work of vettin our movers and we utili e two diﬀerent companies that can pick up and deliver items for our customers purchasing things as well as our consignors who need to bring bulky items in for consignment. They are both very conscientious and aﬀordable movers. These are guys we would let move our mothers!

WHAT WAS THE MOST UNUSUAL ITEM THAT HAS EVER COME THROUGH SOHO’S DOORS? The unusual items are always my favorite pieces and what makes SoHo so special. Some of the most unique items have been a 5 layer faux wedding cake, 2 life size painted wood cigar store Indians, a life size pool cue butler and an antique ox cart wheel that had been polished and mounted on a stone plinth and used as a sculptural piece.

FOR SOMEONE CONSIGNING FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FOR THEM TO KNOW? Read and understand the contract that any reputable consignment shop will want you to sign. Most shops are experts in knowing what any particular item will sell for and some will do research on unusual items in which they are unfamiliar with but a consignor needs to be realistic when it comes to pricing their items. I have had to turn things away because the consignor wanted more money for their item than I knew it would sell for. Here at SoHo we price things from 35% to 70% of retail prices depending on what the fair market value is. Also, the better your items look, the better they will sell and for more money than if it has easily ﬁxed ﬂaws. Think of how nice and clean you would want items to be if you were shopping for them and that is how clean your items should be when they come in for consignment.

We do carry some higher priced items but if you shop higher end retail furniture stores and compare our prices to theirs, you will ﬁnd some real bargains at SoHo and most other consignment shops. And typically, our items are of better quality than most consignment stores because we are particular about what items we take in.

CAN SHOPPERS VIEW CURRENT PIECES ONLINE VIA SOHO’S WEBSITE OR ON FACEBOOK? We try to update our Facebook page and our website at least once a week with new items that have come in and marking which items have recently sold. Approximately 80% of our traﬃc comes from the internet so we are diligent in keeping our presence current on the web.

ALL ABOUT FUR What would be one thing someone would be surprised to learn about fur storage? Storage is only $56 for the enti e calendar year, not per month. Since all garments are stored on the premises, you are given in and out privileges... Meaning if you have an event or occasion and would like your fur just for that night, you can come by and pick it up, then return it the next day with no additional storage fees. No notice is necessary for pick up, so you can pop in at any time. Many places that offer storage actually ship them to another location and require up to 3 weeks notic before you can access your garment. What exactly does a Professional Fur Storage entail? Garments should be stored in a UL Certified cold storage vault. This means it has a monitored central alarm system that is temperature and humidity controlled, between 45 and 52 degrees, with purified air circulating. This serves as protection from heat, humidity, theft, and insects, primarily moths. There is also minimum light exposure to prevent fading. This is the proper way to professionally store your furs in the ideal environment.

Why is “Cold" storage essential for your fur? Cold storage and proper humidity prevent the natural oils in leather from drying out. This helps maximize the life of your fur. Why is not storing my fur at home recommended, if I have air conditioning? Our vaults are designed to protect your furs from theft, heat, and other factors. Regular air condition ing lowers the humidity in your home and this can dry out your garment. Heat, humidity, insects, and moths are what ruins furs. While my fur is in storage, is there enough time to have repairs and alterations done before I pick it up in the fall? Yes, this is more than enough time or our expert furriers and ﬁnishers to complete your repairs and alterations in our on-si e workshop. All furs are inspected by our furriers and ﬁnishers and they will make recommendations on epairs (if needed) and suggestions on updating an older fur into a fashionable and stylish new garment. Some common recommendation are updating shoulders and sleeves, shearing, making reversible, shortening into a jacket or vest, or a complete restyle.

Last week I received a letter from a respected foundation asking for help in sending a needy child to summer camp. I put the letter aside. There are so many more pressing needs in the world today: floods; weary war-torn refugees and most recently the sweet-natured, stranded villagers from the horrendous earthquakes in Nepal. When it comes to giving, one has to prioritize. Nepal’s need was immediate and I responded to the plea from the IRC in a generous way. I did what I could; I did my part. Why then did ignoring the request to help send a needy child to camp keep bothering me? It wasn’t as if missing out on camp was going to devastate these children. There were other activities they could do to enjoy their summer. Nonetheless there was a nagging little voice in my soul that reminded of the precious memories from my summers at a Y.M.C.A. camp on the shore of Lake Couchiching. These memories continue to influence the direction of my life even today. The stated mission of the camp was to help create in each child a healthy body, mind and spirit. No frills, just rough-hewn primitive cabins, and the great outdoors. Just the opportunity to make new friends and in doing so to create a sense of teamwork with children from all walks of life. Our day began at an ungodly hour, when Skid, our camp director, walked past our cabins, ringing his bell, saying “Wakey, wakey, wakey. Dippy, dippy, dippy.” It was the wake up call to leave our warm beds and jump in the cold water of the lake first thing every morning. After shivering and drying off, we dressed and headed to the flagpole, where we held hands and recited the Salutation to the Dawn: Look to this day! For it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of our existence...Today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope...” 64 | triangle style

A resounding “Let’s eat,” followed and off we raced to the dining hall. When breakfast was over, we went back to our cabins for morning cleanup: made our beds to precision, swept our floor, and tidied up both inside and outside the cabin. At the end of the season cabin 6 won the cleanest cabin award: a Hershey chocolate bar. But it was the teamwork and the “Good job. Well done” handshake that was the real award. Each day before lunch we chose swimming, sailing or canoeing lessons. Perhaps arts and crafts or drama. Or outdoor activities such as tennis, archery or campfire building. Even wood carving, making outdoor shelters, or learning how to portage a canoe properly. After lunch and a quiet time, we focused on a particular project, perhaps rehearsing a play for talent night, working on a photography project or taking a watercolor class with the art instructor. Those who wanted to qualify for a two to five day canoe trip, and I did, had to successfully swim to Portage Island, which was a challenge even in the calmest of waters. Of course water safety experts were in a rowboat shadowing us. Once qualified, we headed north. Portaging our canoes, going through the locks, paddling up Severn River, we headed out into unpredictable Sparrow Lake and beyond. A makeshift shelter or just out in the rain under our tarps, we laughed and told ghost stories. The next morning we ate breakfast around a camp fire, loaded up our canoes and headed out again, a chilly morning with a bright blue sky and a warming sun. At the end of our trip, we paddled across Lake Couchiching, watching in silence the setting of the evening sun. And remembering all that summer camp meant to me and to a child I might help, I wrote out a check to put in the mail the following month.
