Exclusively Yours! Don’t you love that feeling of discovering something new and unique? We do, too! Triangle Style is happy to share some special finds you won’t see everywhere else. - Written By Audrey D. Mark -
C.T. Weekends Filly Biz Kristi Hipple and Dennis Mayfield travel to Europe twice of year, in search of exciting new clothing and accessories to bring back to their Raleigh boutique, C.T. Weekends. It was on their latest trip to Paris that they discovered Italian fashion designer and architect Filly Cusenza and her Filly Biz collection. Hipple and Mayfield were “immediately drawn to the fun, whimsical designs” of these hand-sewn creations, and loves the fact that they’ll be making their exclusive North Carolina debut at her Cameron Village shop. Filly Biz was created “to make people happy with fashion through its characters and colors.” The bright and bold designs are inspired by “childhood, fantasy and imagination.” C.T. Weekends is excited to offer their customers another high quality line that is “unique and not mass produced.” Filly Biz is based out of a Sicilian workshop which holds itself to the highest manufacturing standards. Their textiles bear the coveted “Made in Italy” label, which confirms that the product is fully conceived and constructed in Italy. The workmanship of their product is extremely important to artist Filly Cusenza. According to Filly Biz, “the control of production allows not only to maintain high standards, but also to innovate and improve quality and design day after day.”

Nora & Nicky’s Muro Jewelry Nora & Nicky’s is a destination shop definitely worth the trip! Located in the Northridge Business Park, Cathy Brooks curates one of the area’s most community-minded shops around. Brooks founded her designer consignment shop in 2011, with the goal to help recycle and reuse, and to become an invaluable “part of the fabric of Raleigh.” She believes that shopping local, especially through resale, helps keep the economy vibrant and everyone well dressed. While the clothing at Nora & Nicky’s might be strictly consignment, when it comes to jewelry, Brooks is on to something new. After falling in love with the Instagram photos of the Muro Jewelery collection, she reached out to the Huntersville, NC, designer, Rosa Murillo. Now Nora & Nicky’s has an exclusive to carry the line of hand colored resin and wood jewelry with vintage chains in the Triangle.

Murillo is a jeweler and architect who is inspired by nature. Her striking designs have an ethereal feel that makes them extremely wearable. Murillo describes, “The transparency quality of resin gives the illusion of stained glass but without its heaviness, which makes for surprisingly light weight pieces.” Brooks and her customers absolutely love these popular one-of-a-kind standout statement pieces.
Smitten Boutique A’Marie Bath Flowers Nancy McKaig, and her charming Smitten Boutique wants you to “Be smitten by all things lovely!” Located in a charming 1880’s house in the bustling Brightleaf Square district of downtown Durham, McKaig has an eclectic collection of clothing, accessories, shoes and gifts. She clearly has a “passion for fashion” and fills her shop with affordable luxuries. From trendy boho finds to traditional must-haves, Smitten Boutique always has something for everyone. One item that everyone can agree upon are her new A’Marie’s Bath Flowers. McKaig has clearly picked a winner here! These fantastically functional flowers have all of her customers raving - and in the Triangle, they can only be found at Smitten. Each delicately scented and phthalate-free flower is made up of individual soap petals that can plucked and worked into a rich creamy lather for washing, or even shaving. They are as economical as they are beautiful, as each bathing petal provides more than 300 washes.

GAIN CLARITY IN YOUR CLOSET
It happens to the best of us. You walk into your overstuffed closet, ready to choose an outfit for the day. Yet you’re greeted with so many clothes you can’t even see what you have. As you wade through them you realize many are dated, worn out, don’t fit or even still have the tags on them! You have too many clothes, but nothing to wear. Help! Written by: Mary Michele Nidiffer, Founder, StyleFinder Boutique, StyleFinderBoutique.com Photographed by Elizabeth Galecke. www.elizabethgalecke.com

As a Master Style Coach for the past 9 years, I’ve seen the same scenario over and over. Women get frustrated because they have ‘plenty of clothes’, but the truth is that they don’t have the right clothes. They struggle to make outfits with random items but there is no strategy, no plan. Just lots and lots of clothes. This was the case for our recent client, Carol. Carol always looked put together, but she struggled when she got into her closet for the same reason so many other women do. She had too many clothes, and many of them she wasn’t even wearing. When we got into Carol’s closet she knew that she had kept some things way too long (like, 20 years!), and she was able to release many of her clothes with ease even though she thought she would be too emotionally attached. We debated over several items, but as our StyleFinder Certified Style Coach, Kirsten Miller, and I informed her that the color or the fit wasn’t right, she gladly handed it over. As we had gone through about a quarter of her closet and she began to see space between the hangers that had been jam-packed in there, she was giddy! She noted how she was feeling lighter and freer, which is not uncommon during a Closet Clarity session. It’s almost like losing weight – you’re releasing things that you’re ready to let go of, that were just dragging you down, and it feels exhilarating! The average American woman spends $285 per month on clothing, which means if you keep your clothing for 3 years or more, you probably have about $10K hanging in there. But the sad reality is that you’re probably only wearing 10 – 20% of what’s in there. Meaning, that $8 – 9K is just sitting there, taking up space and keeping you from getting dressed quickly and easily. We took out close to half of Carol’s wardrobe, but a few hours after our session she sent me a note and told me she felt like she had more

to wear! I’ve heard this from many clients over the years, and it’s no surprise. Once you take away what you’re not wearing, you can more easily see what you love – and even some things you forgot you had! After clearing out the closet, we coached Carol on not being too ‘matchy’, but to mix things up a bit more to get more mileage from them. This is the same philosophy we teach at StyleFinder Boutique – build a wardrobe rich with items that are versatile and can be worn in multiple ways. She was excited as she started to see fresh possibilities. Another big part of the Closet Clarity session is to uncover where the gaps are. In other words, what’s missing? It turns out she needed a few new solid, neutral cardigans to layer over her plentiful tanks and tops, and some new solid trousers including black, mushroom and gray, to create the foundation for her wardrobe. A few new pairs of shoes, some
shorts and a new swimsuit cover-up, and Carol is ready to go right into spring and summer with ease! The best part? She doesn’t feel weighed down by those items she felt like she ‘should’ wear, but was never actually wearing. Anything that had a tag still on had to go. She also realized she liked to purchase the same thing over and over (such as white tanks and black turtlenecks), and that she had far too many than she needed. Again, not an uncommon mistake. We sorted Carol’s closet by style, then colorcoordinated everything so she could easily find what she was looking for. She has plenty of room in her closet and nothing is fighting for space. We took away about 5 garbage bags full of clothing. Three were donated, some were consigned and some were given to friends or family members, including her beloved Western boots and sweaters that her mother made.

The next day I got this wonderful note from Carol: “What a wonderful experience I had clearing my closet of unnecessary items today. I had clothes that I had owned for at LEAST 20 years that I was emotionally attached to for some reason that I didn’t wear OR love, but I kept anyway. There were clothes that were worn and worn and worn, and needed to GO, but for some reason, I didn’t notice. You showed me that it’s okay to let go of items that just don’t work for me! I can walk into my closet now (which, by the way, I have done SEVERAL times just to stare) and SEE what I have and know that my clothes fit, are the right tones for me, that I love and can quickly pick out and outfit I WANT to wear. I feel lighter! Thank you SO much for helping me through this journey. You are a bright light in our world!”
HOW TO CLEAN OUT YOUR OWN CLOSET Many of my clients come to me with a closet filled with clothes, yet no plan. Year after year they add to their wardrobes without any real thought on how all the pieces will fit together. They spend hundreds and thousands of dollars, but come away from their closet feeling desperate and depressed. This, of course, leads to more shopping, which really only exacerbates the problem. SO HOW TO YOU GET OFF THE WARDROBE HAMSTER WHEEL? HERE’S HOW:
TAKE STOCK No matter how busy you are, carve out some time whether it’s a few minutes each day for a week or a few hours one evening. This is your uninterrupted time to get up close and personal with your wardrobe. Go through each item and assess whether or not to keep it. Does it fit? Does it flatter? Do you love it? If the answer is no, then purge it from your closet immediately.
WITHOUT THE ATTITUDE OR STICKER SHOCK
effortless style
THE REPLACEMENTS If it turns out that a well-loved favorite is now pilled, has stains or no longer fits you, ditch it and begin to look for a replacement. These will be some of the first items to put on your list, and chances are some of the most worn. Buy the best you can afford because these will be some of your go-to staples. If you feel inclined, buy two.

What core items are you missing? If you don’t have a favorite pair of jeans, are in need of some cardigans to layer, or a few separates to stretch your work wardrobe would make a difference for you, put these on your list. You want to choose items that go with at least three items you already own.
THE SPICE Now, ask yourself what you really want to wear. This could be anything from the latest boots to a beautiful bracelet or a pretty top. Think of items that bring your look current and you can’t wait to wear. This is the fun stuff, and if it’s trendy, you’ll most definitely catch it at a great price.

As you make your list, ask yourself what items will work for you now, and what will work for you in the spring. A little planning and strategizing now will make a big difference for you in the coming months, and will also help you to view your wardrobe as a unified whole that will take you in and out of seasons for the next few years. So make your own shopping list, and check it twice. Go back to it as often as needed, and add to it what you desire. This ‘work in progress’ is something that you can keep going continually so that you always know what you need, and to get a better handle on how to take advantage of sales when you find them. After all, a bargain is not a bargain unless it’s something you’d pay full price for. And when you have your eye on the prize, even though it’s worth it to pay full price, it’s so much sweeter when you get a bargain!

Hi Anna, I have made it my new years to resolution to finally quit smoking! I hate to admit it but my face definitely shows the signs of smoking for the last 15 years. I was wondering what the first steps you would recommend in getting my skin to looking better. - Connie Connie, first of all, congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. Other than sun damage due to not wearing daily SPF, smoking is the next biggest enemy to clear, youthful skin. Your wise decision is the first step in the process of skin recovery. After 15 years of smoking, it’s time for you to go through Skin Boot Camp to kick-start this new chapter in your life. For best results and a solid recovery, I recommend the following treatments: 1. MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy. To treat fine lines and wrinkles, the very best place to start is with Medical Microneedling. This treatment signals the skin to stimulate collagen production and fresh, new tissue. Additionally, medical microneedling minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, and acne marks while minimizing the size of pores. 2. HA5 REJUVENATING HYDRATOR BY SKINMEDICA. This revolutionary high-potency rejuvenating facial moisturizer provides instantaneous smoothing in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles using a proprietary blend of five types of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is naturally produced in the skin and helps us hold moisture for a more youthful and healthy complexion. As we age, our body loses about 50% of the HA we once had in our early 20s. Add smoking as a factor, and you will see even more depletion of natural moisture in the skin. The HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator can be applied day or night, and boasts a high satisfaction review rating on top skin care review websites. 3. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA. This long-lasting hyaluronic acid filler is a great minimizing treatment for “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. If you’re afraid of the pain, never fret! Volbella has built-in lidocaine and is a pain-free smooth gel filler with minimal-to-no swelling, and provides a naturally subtle and softer effect that can last up to a year. 4. HALO HYBRID FRACTIONAL LASER. When you’re ready to commit to full-face rejuvenation, Halo is the best laser technology on the market. Halo improves overall tone and texture in addition to significant removal of discoloration, reduction in fine lines, reduced pore size, skin reflectivity and glow. The treatment requires a couple of days of downtime, but the results will make you look years younger. Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. BEAUTY | REVIEW
I’ve been in the beauty biz for over 15 years and as a professional model, I have been privy to almost every kind of make-up, skin and hair product you can imagine. Top secrets from the industry’s best and brightest artists that I can’t wait to share…and now I can! I’m trying out the hottest and most hyped products on the beauty market today, so you don’t have to spend a dime (unless it’s earned it’s “Try” angles!) So hang on to your handbag, I’ve been shopping and I’m ready to share! — HEATHER GREEN
Beautyblender Blotterazzi CLAIMS TO Absorbs excess facial oil without having to use more make-up or products that you throw away. The Blott erazzi comes with two teardrop shaped foam pads, a carrying case and “blendercleanser”. You simply use the pad to blot away oil throughout the day and cleanse every few days. MY TAKE Having oily/combination skin, I was SOOOO excited about getting rid of my blotting “papers”. Those dozens of oil soaked tissues in that collect in the bottom of my purse each week are NOT attractive and pricey! My optimism got the best of me and led to utter disappointment unfortunately. (Enter sad face here) I was not impressed. In fact, the “foam” felt like I was using the egg crate material that you find on beds! After trying what promised to be a dream come true product, I woke up and went straight back to my “papers”. TRIANGLE STYLE RATING Cue sad music – It’s a measly 2 Tri-Angles for the Blotterazzi. I REALLY want this product to work and tried it several times with the same average results. The price is fair and the idea is grand, it’s the lack of delivery that earned the Blotterazzi such low Tri-Angles. Perhaps if your skin is extremely oily, the Blotterazzi would be the superhero of cutting edge skin products, but as for my combo skin, I’m sticking with the papers for now! ss
Aveeno Positively Radiant 60-second in Shower Facial CLAIMS TO Act as a “buffer” – endowed with lemon peel extract and soy, Aveeno has created a facial that only takes 60 seconds and all for under $20. Packed with “natural ingredients”, Aveeno promises natural, more radiant skin as always. This magical product also vows to “reveals healthy, glowing skin 4x faster than at home masks and peels. This oil-free facial treatment works with the steam of your shower to deeply but gently exfoliate all traces of dirt, oil, and dead skin.” – after reading this, I’m sold.

MY TAKE Having larger than normal pores, I was really excited about this particular facial! Easy, quick and effective just about sums it up for this face. I LOVE that tight, clean feeling your skin gets when you use a great product and that’s exactly what I got with Aveeno’s 60-second facial. I truly can tell a difference and will definitely keep using this inexpensive spa treatment! It has yet to dry my skin out but I ALWAYS use a really good moisturizer after using any type of exfoliator. Long term, I expect a few blemishes (which happens with most exfoliants I’ve used) but overall, Aveeno gets major props from this consumer! TRIANGLE STYLE RATING 4.5 Tri-Angles!!! I must confess that I have NOT had much luck with Aveeno products in the past, but the 60-second facial has given me a fresh perspective about this line. Great price, great product, great results, I can’t ask for more than that! sssss

Le Petit Marseillais Extra Gentle Shower Cream CLAIMS TO be France’s number one body wash. This, is a hefty claim coming from the land of gorgeous skin AND desserts! Le Petit combines natural and fresh ingredients to create a healthy and gentle cleanser. “Smooth and easy to rinse foam” that promises “skin is left feeling soft, moisturized and nourished”. MY TAKE OK, I’ve never used a shower cream before, so I had ZERO expectations – I only assumed my skin would feel and look like a newborn baby’s. I’m kidding...sort of. This was a BIG bottle for the price and I really liked the smell - a pleasant, very clean and fresh fragrance but not overpowering. The texture was good too, not slimy like some of the reviews for other shower creams I had read about. This IS France’s number one Body Wash, and for the price, I can see why! TRIANGLE STYLE RATING I’m giving Le Petit FOUR Tri-Angles – you seriously cannot beat the price (which averages around $4-7 per bottle! WalMart and Amazon seem to have the prices on Le Petit products.) It’s a great, quality product and I can see this becoming a bathroom staple. After reading countless positive reviews, I get it! I will definitely be trying other products in this line. I’m impressed!! ssss

MEET TONYA NORWOOD MODERN ENHANCEMENTS: I am a married mama of 2 beautiful babies – a 6-year-old and an almost 2-year-old! We have 4 dogs. I started in 1998 doing hair extensions and permanent cosmetics. I eventually built that foundation into a salon and then added on a day spa. I am now getting ready to open Raleigh’s 1st mobile salon! I have a fine arts degree - I really love to create and design. I have done all the decorating and designing of the salon and now the mobile salon. It is a passion of mine. I love having that artistic vison and making it come to life. A MAMA WITH A MISSION: “Because beautiful hair doesn’t just happen!” I am an activist of women. I try to instill the values into my team of being hardworking and determined. I always try to encourage my girls to think outside of the box and to always try new things and set goals. My latest adventure is Raleigh’s very first mobile salon, Glam! We will offer services for hair, extensions, nails, and skin care. The salon is a 45 ½ foot RV. It’s a state of the art, top of the line beauty bus. We are so excited to visit different locations in the Triangle area, making hair and beauty dreams come true! 34 | triangle style
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: My day starts at 7:30am to get my son off to school and my toddler ready for the day. I get to work around 9:30am to see clients and run my business. I pride myself on having many “hats.” My mom hat, business owner hat, hair designer hat, teacher hat…I get home around 6pm each night and put on other hats; My wife hat, my chef hat… SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T SPELL CEO WITHOUT MOM: Being a mother has impacted me and my business in a positive way. I have learned to not sweat the small stuff. I am more accepting of small problems and more excited to solve those small problems. I can deal with messes and mess ups. I have learned time management, and time crunches are now a big part of life. I think that being a mother has made me a little more laid back as well. My staff are like my children so I can provide them with the best work environment possible. I am very determined and I love to get things done. I love having pretty things but I am also driven in making the environment around me very welcoming and comfortable. I want the people that I surround myself with to feel welcomed and right at home. MAMA ALWAYS SAID… HERE’S MY BEST ADVICE: A while ago I read an article that has stuck with me ever since. It was an interview of an old man who had just reached his 100th birthday. He was asked what kept him young and how he kept going. His response is one that I will try to live my own life by. He said “Every day I always make sure that I have something to do, something to see, or something to say. Every single day I make goals and I reach them.” We should always be setting goals, climbing mountains, and breaking down barriers. With my business and life, I am always trying to push new limits and keep improving.

I’m an NC native with two young girls and have always had an entrepreneurial heart. I knew I wanted “to be a boss” even before I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser! After working in a salon for eight or nine years, owning one was the next progression for me in my career. Of course, I love doing hair, but I also love being a mentor and teacher. I’m a believer in “God Whispering”; if you are at a lost place, sometimes its best to just be quiet and listen. I’m not impulsive, I take time to think things through. This is especially important now that I’m a mom and a business owner, because every decision that I make affects more than just myself. A MAMA WITH A MISSION: I believe that you are either business-minded or you’re not, and you have to be willing to work hard and do what you need to do to grow your business. I’m not afraid to “get my hands dirty”; I’ll mop the floors and pull out a ladder to change an air filter if I need to. As a mom, and business owner, I like to lead by example, working hard to be honest and the very best version of myself I can be. My professional and personal goals are always evolving. With the support of my team, we work hard to make sure each guest into our salon feels catered to, from start to finish, and we respect their time. It’s a judgmentfree zone at our salon, plus it’s fun and energetic, but not too intense.
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: I wake up with my earlybird preschool daughter and get busy packing lunches for both her and her first grade sister. I try to make the most out of my carpool line time with the girls, as we talk and enjoy each other’s company before everything moves into full swing for all of us. There’s a lot of shuffling in my day. In addition to running the salon with my partner, Erin Shebaugh, I’m also a full-time stylist on the floor with clients and I teach classes to other stylists, as well.
Consigned Fashion From 0-3X... Because Style Has No Size
SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T SPELL CEO WITHOUT MOM: I’m a self-described Type A control freak! I’ve been learning how important it is to delegate, though. While that is something that doesn’t come easy for me, I have seen that I will fail if I don’t accept the help. I’ve also found that if you don’t work with others, eventually people will stop offering their assistance. I’ve also seen that delegating is not only good for me, but encourages and empowers others…and I don’t want to be the one who “kills your swag!” While I try to find calm in my life, I do believe that balance is a unicorn - it’s not a real thing! As a natural born workaholic, being a mom, however, has pushed me to look for more work/life equity. My dad has always said, “Children will do as you do, not as you say,” and I want to set a good example for them. I hope that I’m showing my girls the importance of following their dreams and having a good work ethic. However my girls know that, for me, they always come before everything! Sometimes a small change in school plans, for example, may have me scrambling. But regardless of the chaos of the day, every night after we read and I tuck them in to bed, my girls and I share what we are thankful for before they drift off into sleep. MAMA ALWAYS SAID… HERE’S MY BEST ADVICE: Both at home, and at work, I always try to lead by example. I think you need to be willing to work as hard as you expect anyone else on your team to work. You also need to make sure you stay connected to others, reflect on your own performance and check yourself regularly - or you won’t be able to lead. I think that you need to live your life in four wheel drive; ready and prepared to keep your traction when the terrain changes. I also firmly believe that in order to get to the top - you need to step on every rung in the ladder! TS

TRIED IT : BRA FITTING Finding the right bra can be as difficult a quest as finding the right pair of jeans – which is about as much fun as going to the dentist. If the jeans fit around the waist, they’re too small on the hips. Or if they fit right at the top, they are too long. With a bra, you might find the right cup size, but the band is too tight. Or you get a good fit around your chest, but you look in the mirror and see that you have the dreaded “quad boob.” After years of guess work when it came to this necessary evil, I gave in and went to the pros. Enter, Ruth Dowdy, owner of The Bra Patch in Raleigh.’ — Written By Heather Green
Going to a Bra Fitting Ruth explains that the fitting starts in the dressing room, where the attendant will ask you what you want out of the bra. For example, you might say that you want more support if you have larger breasts, or you might be interested in a more durable bra that doesn’t require such delicate care. The attendant will also ask if there are any special issues you have to address with a bra. For example, you might have an allergy to certain fabrics, or you might have different sized breasts because of a surgery. “We normally take a couple of measurements, and then we go out and select a bra to start the fitting process,” Dowdy explains. “Once we see how that particular bra fits, we can gauge what other bras will work best for her. The beauty of a bra fitting is that we know how each and every bra we carry fits differently from another. It is almost like figuring out a puzzle for each and every woman.” Dowdy says that most women try on at least three bras before finding the right one. She said that most women are so pleased with the bra they find that they decide to wear it right out of the store.
36 | triangle style
“The garbage cans in the fitting rooms are often filled with old bras at the end of the day,” she says.
Common Mistakes Unfortunately, the reason that so many women are wearing the wrong bra is that we continue to make the same mistakes when shopping. Dowdy shares that the biggest mistake she sees women making when shopping for a bra is to buy the band size too large. The band size is the number on the bra size. So if you buy a 36C, your band size is 36 inches. “If the cup size isn’t large enough for the breast to fit into, women will go up a band size, which changes the cup size,” she says. “The cup of a 36D is different from the cup of a 38D. It’s all proportional. If you change one thing, the other changes.” The other big mistake that women make is shopping for bras at department stores, where the sizing options are very limited. Most major retailers only carry five cup sizes: A, B, C, D, and DD. Specialty bra shops carry cup sizes ranging from A to N. Those smaller increments can make a huge difference to fit.
Things to Remember While Shopping Shopping for a bra doesn’t have to be complicated, but you do need to keep some important things in mind to make sure that you get the right bra. Dowdy explains that it is important to find the right sized band first and foremost. She says that the band should fit snugly but be comfortable. “All bras stretch with wear, and you want to buy your bra fitted to the loosest hook, or at least the middle,” she says. “You should not start out with fastening the bra in the tightest hook.” You will know that the band is loose because it will ride up your back between your shoulder blades. The band will also do this when the bra starts to stretch out. You will also notice that the breasts will droop if the band becomes too loose. “Support and lift should come from the band being snug enough to support the weight of the breasts without using the straps to crank them up,” Dowdy explains. The cup size should be large enough to hold the entire breast without anything bulging out of the top or the sides. If you notice this happening, you need to go up a cup size.
SEE SOME MORE FABULOUS CLIENT TRANSFORMATIONS ON PAGE 49
Finally, it is important that you remember that there is no standardization in bra testing, so the same sized bras from different manufacturers may not fit the same way. “That’s why being fitted is more important now than ever before,” Dowdy says. “We know how one bra fits differently from another and help take the frustration out of bra shopping.”
Popular Styles You should be able to get the right fit with any of the bra styles available. Just make sure you get a fitting since different styles might have different fits. Dowdy says that molded t-shirt bras remain very popular since they are smooth and look great under a variety of garments, including knits and tight-fitting shirts. “Although a cut and sew cup bra will almost always give you a better fit.” Popular brands include Fantasie, Elomi, Natori, Wacoal, and Panache. Whatever bra you buy – whether it’s a different brand, style, or size – just make sure you buy a few at the same time. “Bras do not last forever,” Dowdy says. “Bras should NOT celebrate birthdays!” Visit Ruth’s Bra Patch at www.TheBraPatch.com and bring in your gently used bras to donate to local organizations that help abused women.

designer/boutique spotlight: kedem sasson, at ease

Carol Daley and her loyal At Ease customers look forward to the Kedem Sasson trunk show all year long! Each spring, the sartorial synergy between Carol’s sophisti ated clientele and the Israeli designer is palpable as the Kedem Sasson rep, Andy Orliner, arrives with stacks of the latest samples and swatches in tow. With an exclusive relationship, At Ease is able to offer clients access to one of the most comfortable and fashion forward lines of “wearable art” around. As much as Carol, and her devoted customers love Kedem, the feeling is clearly mutual. With the foundational tru t of a fi een year personal relationship b tween Kedem and Carol, Orliner exclaims, “At Ease is my favorite boutique for trunk shows. The customers are like a big family; everyone seems to know everyone.” He continues, “What is surprising to me, is the number of women that love the styling.” Orliner and Carol both agree that what appeals to At Ease shoppers is that these striking and creati ely designed pieces are great wardrobe investments, not just trendy toss aways. Orliner explains, “They offer style rather than fashion. This is why someone can throw on a Kedem Sasson top from fi een years ago over a pant from five years ago and it all looks as fresh and vital as this season’s collection ” As a testament to its timelessness, Ca ol tells, “I had a customer purchase a Kedem sweater. She wore it a year and sold it on eBay for $15 more than she paid for it at my store.”
Kedem knows his customers are as unique as his clothes. Through fabric and structure, he creates that perfect balance of looking professional, and being comfortable. Carol explains, “He has a very devoted clientele who appreciate his designs.” “Another important point,” she highlights, “Most of his clothes are one size....yes One Size! And they fit women sizes 6 to 18.” In addition to the incredibly versatil collection of Kedem Sasson, Carol stocks an amazing assortment of other “so dressing” designers. Orliner is proud to mention that At Ease, “Has been a great supporter of small, arti tic clothing designers for many years. These designers would all be gone without that support.” “And let me tell you,” he continues, “Carol buys from MANY companies! She really does a fantastic job at providing so much design talent to Raleigh.” What you many not realize when you first walk into the shop is that Carol, herself, is quite accomplished. Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, she is a successful entrepreneur with more than thirty years of retail experience under her belt. She has a bachelor’s degree in art from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in East Asian Studies from the University of the Philippines. She also served our country as a Penn State commissioned second lieutenant in the US Air Force, in first class of women commissioned through ROTC. But now Carol’s mission is one to help area women “Be Comfortable, Be Stylish, Be Different.” She’s there to help guide her friends and customers to take some risks, but still stay true to themselves. “Some women are afraid to try something different,” Carol encourages, “I always say it's only fabric, thread and a few bu ons or zippers.....no big deal.” TS

FIVE
WAYS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER CAN SAVE YOU MONEY ON YOUR HOME MAKEOVER
If you're planning to give your home decor a makeover, you'll probably have plenty of exciting ideas about how you want your home to look after the project has been completed. Because of this, you may have rejected the idea of hiring a professional interior designer - after all, if you have a clear vision of the results you want to achieve, why spend extra for a few fancy plans and unwanted embellishments? The fact is, even if you don't want to make use of a designer's creativity, hiring one is still very worthwhile and can actually save you money during your decoration work. Here's how. DETAILED PLANNING AND PROBLEM AVOIDANCE An experienced interior designer will be able to put together a detailed plan on how to bring your decor ideas to fruition. This plan will pinpoint any potential problems in advance, so that they can be dealt with before work starts, rather than encountered halfway through the project when it may be expensive or difficult to overcome them.
Written by P. Swift 56 | triangle style
REALISTIC BUDGETING A designer will also have an excellent feel for the costs of a project, and will be able to put together a comprehensive budget that can be relied upon. An amateur risks embarking on a makeover without accounting for likely additional costs that can crop up, potentially leaving a project unfinished when the money runs out. PRACTICALITY AND ACHIEVABILITY Your makeover ideas may look excellent in your mind's eye, but a designer will be able to take your concept and translate it into a realistic, readily achievable form that won't cost the earth. Alternatively, they may be able to suggest other ways to achieve similar or better effects at a lower cost or in more practical ways. SOURCING OF MATERIALS After years in the profession, a good designer will have built up many contacts through which high-quality materials can be sourced at preferential prices. This means you could either save money compared to buying the materials yourself, or can afford to extend your plans to achieve more within the same budget.
TRUSTWORTHY CONTRACTORS In a similar way, an interior designer will have reliable access to trustworthy, skilled contractors who can be called upon to do the work. Finding the right builders or decorators can be a risky business, but using a designer's painstakingly built contacts list will take the guesswork out of the task, ensuring you receive quality workmanship at a realistic price. What's more, they can take charge of coordinating the various contractors you'll need, making sure that they work together efficiently, quickly, and without costly misunderstandings. Everyone's home makeover is different. Some people want to be deeply involved in every aspect of the project, while others would rather delegate the entire process and simply enjoy the results. Whichever level of participation and control you'd prefer, there's no doubt that hiring an interior designer will make your home decor efforts go more smoothly while cutting your costs along the way. CURB
APPEAL IN A WEEKEND In just a couple days, you can transform your home's exterior from drab to impressive. In addition to making your house and yard look neat and inviting, you can give buyers the impression that they won't need to spend much time or money on maintenance. A low-maintenance property |can be a huge selling point for many buyers. 58 | triangle style
Written by K.H. Summers
CURB APPEAL, DAY ONE Start off with a good cleaning. Work from your front door out, and be careful not to overlook small details. For instance: • Remove dead bugs from the porch light and wash the globe or reflector .• Sweep or wipe down window shutters, overhangs and other areas that collect cobwebs • Sweep the porch and steps • Wash the windows (inside and out)
Try to look at the front of your home with new eyes. Take a broom to the sidewalk cracks. If there are weeds in the cracks, pour a bit of boiling water on them--they'll shrivel and die in a day. Make sure your front yard looks neat and lowmaintenance as well. Mow the lawn, keep it edged and add a fresh layer of mulch to your planting beds. Don't go overboard planting flowers or trimming bushes into elaborate shapes. The object here is to make it look like the front of your home simply stays neat and never needs attention. CURB APPEAL, DAY TWO After a day of cleaning and neatening-up, your home's exterior will look nice and appear easy to maintain. Your curb appeal goal on day two is to make it look inviting; to make people want to see more. Any of the following touches could transform neat and clean into warm and inviting. Stand at the curb and decide which would add the greatest visual appeal to your particular home.

• Repaint your front door • Add one or two pots of flowers near the front entrance • Replace the house numbers with stylish new ones • Hang a welcoming, seasonally appropriate wreath on the front door • Replace your doormat • Put a cheery lamp inside a window visible from the street
QUICK AND INEXPENSIVE CURB APPEAL Arguably, curb appeal is one of the most important qualities in a home for sale. Boosting your curb appeal is shown to increase the interest in a home. Increased interest generally means more showings and less time on the market, and can even increase the perceived value of your home. As important as it is, though, curb appeal doesn't have to take a bite out of your budget or a week of your time. Keep it clean and simple, and your home is sure to beckon potential buyers to request a showing. TS

EVER WONDER WHAT SCORES WELL IN THE RESALE MARKET? TRISH YOVANOVICH, OWNER OF SOHO CONSIGNMENTS TEACHES US THE BASICS OF FURNITURE CONSIGNMENT. So, Trish, how does SoHo choose what pieces you will carry in your store? We get a lot of phone traffic from our website from people asking about our consignment policies. Some folks are moving and they don't want to take their existing things with them. Other calls are from people who have furniture and accessories that they’ve inherited from a downsizing or deceased parent or relative, and some callers are just looking to change up their decor. Whatever the reason, we ask everyone the same six questions:
1. What are the pieces they want to consign? 2. Who are the manufacturers? 3. How old are the pieces? 4. Is your home a non smoking and pet free home? 5. Can you send pictures of the pieces you are wanting to consign? 6. When did you need to have these pieces out of your home and into SoHo? The answers to these six questions are some of the determining factors as to whether we will take a piece or not. For instance, when we ask what pieces are available for consignment and it turns out to be a formal dining room set, unfortunately the market just doesn’t exist right now for those items. Casual sets still work in some cases, and we hate to ever say “no” to a consignor, but it is the current reality in furniture trends for the formal dining pieces. In fact, probably 80% of the inquiries we get from new consignors have something to do with dining sets. And right now obviously everyone is selling and nobody is buying. It will probably turn at some point, but we try to stay on top of the trends in the market for the sake of both our consignors and shoppers.
CONSIGNMENT 101 LEARN WHICH PIECES MAKE THE GRADE
60 | triangle style
We prefer to take high end manufacturers of furniture and accessories like Herman Miller, Knoll, Kittinger, Century, Michael Thomas, Kargas, Maitland Smith, Wedgewood, Waterford and Uttermost just to name a few. However, we also take the mid level quality like Bassett, Thomasville, Ethan Allen, Stanley, Lenox, Fitz & Floyd, and such, to keep our prices in line with our competition and customer expectations. Some pieces we get are from manufacturers that aren't in business anymore and sometimes these are the really fun and unique pieces that you aren't going to find anywhere else. We have a vintage game table in the store right now that has a top in the shape of a four leaf clover and has four wooden bowls that rotate from under the corners to the center of each side for drinks and such. I've never seen anything like this before and probably won't see another once it's gone. It is pieces like this that make SoHo "the" unique shopping experience. We try not to take pieces purchased from the big box stores because the quality is not up to SoHo standards and we can't really compete with their ever decreasing pricing. I just inquired about a "leather" Chesterfield sofa that I saw advertised on a currently popular online furniture store for $1000. I searched the internet for the specifications of the sofa, but never found a description of the kind of leather used on this sofa. I actually had to send an inquiry their customer service department to find out what it was upholstered with. I came to find out it was bonded leather, which typically means it's going to delaminate, peel and look awful within a year if it's a piece that is going to be used a lot. After we've established that we would like to see what a client is looking to consign, we ask for pictures. If we think it is something that will sell, we will schedule a date for it to come to the store. Sometimes the pictures pique our curiosity, but just don't do the pieces justice, so we will make an appointment to go see them in person before anyone goes to the trouble of hauling it themselves or paying a mover to get it into the store. We love to get unusual and unique pieces at SoHo but also try to get the pieces that are trending, as well, to keep our clientele interested and spreading the word about the great things they saw at SoHo. Always Perfect Being more productive is all a matter of changing your habits and finding focus. If you want to get more done, begin by looking at how you're currently using your time. CREATE TO-DO LISTS: To-do lists are useful because they can help you to remember what you need to do each day, so you're not spending time on tasks that don't matter or getting nothing accomplished at all. Each night think of what you need to do and want to do the next day, and prepare your to-do list. If you do this, you will wake up in the morning knowing exactly where your focus should be. COMPLETE AN IMPORTANT TASK EARLY: If you have a number of items on your to-do list, try to get a big one accomplished early in the day. By crossing a large item off your list, you will motivate yourself to get more done. The smaller tasks will seem easy and you'll knock them out quickly. It's important when making your to-do list that you don't give yourself too many large tasks for one day. If you have two large items and three or four smaller ones, you are more likely to be successful in getting them done. WHEN YOU OPEN AN EMAIL, DEAL WITH IT: Never open an email without the intention of replying to it, deleting it, or filing it. It's a waste of time to open emails, read them, and leave them to deal with later. Dedicate a few blocks of time each day to deal with emails. Don't check emails every hour just to see if anything new has come in. If you're expecting an important email, you can check more often. If the email you're anticipating hasn't come in, exit your inbox again.
CAMERON VILLAGE 437 Daniels St., Raleigh (919) 787-9073
DON'T START CHECKING TEXTS UNTIL LUNCHTIME: If you typically check texts as soon as you wake up, change this habit and don't begin checking texts until lunchtime. Once you begin replying to texts, it becomes a
never-ending activity throughout the day. Allow yourself a text-free morning in order to help you focus on getting things accomplished. Turn off your sound notifications so that you aren't distracted by new texts that come in.
Always Perfect
GET UP 30 MINUTES EARLIER: If you want to get more done, wake up 30 minutes earlier. In this amount of time you could work out, journal, or cross a couple of small items off your to-do list. When you set your alarm to wake up at a certain time, get out of bed at that time. It's tempting to want to lie in bed until the last moment possible, but if you do, you have less time to get things done. LEARN TO SAY NO :If you say yes to every request and favor asked of you, it's time to learn to say no. When people outsource tasks to you, you take away time from working on your own tasks. This doesn't mean you shouldn't ever help people. It means you should be more discerning about what you agree to do for others. If your sister's car has broken down and she needs a ride to her doctor's appointment, that's something you might agree to do. But if your friend assumes you can watch her child at the last minute because you work from home and she has a hair appointment, you shouldn't feel guilty saying no. If you don't respect your time, neither will others, and they will may take advantage of your good nature. By saying no more often, you will have more time to check things off your to-do list. KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU ACCOMPLISH EACH DAY: When you can look back on your day and week, and see how much you accomplished, you will be motivated to continue getting things done. If you ran two miles, write it down. If you washed all the laundry and scrubbed the floors, make a note of it. You can do many small tasks each day and not realize how quickly they add up to getting a lot done. When you see it on paper, it becomes more clear. Once you decide you want to become more productive, you need to become more focused on exactly where you spend your time. You can increase your productivity simply by changing your habits. TS

BEAUTY|NEWS
Slowing down the clock on aging skin is perhaps the number one beauty concern for many women. Now, thanks to advancements in skincare, we can marvel at how many scientificallybacked products have found their way onto our shelves. Some ingredients worth noting are peptides, which form the building blocks in collagen, the protein that makes up your skin. Improving collagen helps skin stay elastic and firm, and skincare lines that include peptides are praised for their results. Many products make bold claims that their brand of peptides is just the miracle your skin needs. Don’t be fooled into thinking that peptides alone will do the trick, however. It is important to realize they work best in tandem with other ingredients and, even though they are powerful, they can only do so much. Dr. Boyse with Southern Dermatology recommends three skincare lines for the way they combine peptides with other ingredients to give you fresher, brighter, and younger looking skin. ALASTIN: Alastin Skin Regenerating Nectar with TriHex TechnologyTM has been designed to restore and
strengthen your skin for lasting, lifelong effects. “It increases the natural enzymes in the skin that breakdown sun-damaged elastin and fragmented collagen,” according to Dr. Boyse. “By clearing out the ‘junk yard,’ of damaged elastin and collagen, production goes up dramatically.” So far, Alastin Skincare has demonstrated the greatest amount of cell growth, protein rejuvenation, and healthy maintenance, separating it from other skincare products.
SKINBETTER SCIENCE: Skinbetter Science Smoothing Daily Treatment Cream FACE relies on its revolutionary InterFuseTM patented technology to deliver a super potent blend of messenger peptides to help skin appear more youthful. It also contains a neuro-calming peptide, which offers an immediate soothing effect for skin. This formula is lightweight and will not block pores while it hydrates and keeps skin looking radiant. COLORSCIENCE: Colorscience offers skin perfectors, foundations, UV protectors, and enhancers to keep skin shielded from harsh UVA/UVB rays. Their 3-in-1 Face Primers have targeted ingredients to treat specific skin concerns and instantly even skin tone and blur the look of pores— all while maximizing wear time of your makeup. They also feature a non-chemical broad spectrum SPF 20, which is vital to any skincare routine. No ingredient can overcome continuous exposure to damaging sun rays, and peptides have the best chance at working well when used as part of an ongoing skincare regimen that includes excellent sun protection. Dr. Margaret B. Boyse of Southern Dermatology takes a conservative, affordable, holistic approach to determine if the simple solution is best or if she needs to apply more advanced technologies to treatment. She enjoys educating patients about prevention, building long-term relationships through excellent customer care, and being a part of their lives through her medical practice. Specialties include: Cosmetic Dermatology, General Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery and Skin Cancer. 4201 Lake Boone Trail • Suite 207 • Raleigh • 919-863-0073 • southernderm.com 64 | triangle style

We spoke with Skin Apeel’s Georgeta Juncu, a certiďŹ ed PhiBrows Artist, about microblading, an eyebrow technique that uses a micro-pigmentation technique to create amazingly full, natural eyebrows. Georgeta trained at Europe’s renowned Branko Babić PhiAcademy— the most reputable and known academy around the world. She is the only certiďŹ ed PhiArtist in North Carolina and one of only a handful of artists in the United States.

WHAT EXACTLY IS MICROBLADING? Microblading is a semi-permanent, manual technique, that draws hair-like strokes on the top layer of the skin with a hyper-realistic result. It creates the most natural looking eyebrows! WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT MICROBLADING YOU ENCOUNTER? Most people think it’s a tattoo. It is sort of a tattoo, but not really. Like I said earlier, it’s a manual technique and the ink used is different than tattoo ink. It is not as deep, which makes it semi-permanent, and the ink is synthetic which doesn't have heavy metal or is magnetized. It also doesn't turn red, nor does it spread under the skin, and it is vegan friendly. WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DO YOU NEED TO BE CERTIFIED IN MICROBLADING? I can't really speak for all microblading schools out there. I can say PhiAcademy in Serbia presented the most beautiful eyebrows, so I decided to learn from them. I went to Germany for my first class, which was followed by an extensive six-month online training, with support from Masters. I then worked for months with actual live treatments until I received my certificate and was allowed to work on clients. The PhiBrows Certificate is recognized worldwide. I also went to New York for my Perfectionist class and then to the annual Master class In Belgrade, Serbia.

The European Treatment
I am proud to announce that I have had the opportunity to train in Europe and I am part of the most amazing, most natural, and most uniquely perfect eyebrow technique in the world. I was the first Phibrows Artist in the state of North Carolina and one of only a few in the United States. I am a certified Phibrows Artist and have studied semi-permanent makeup micro pigmentation at the Branko Babić Microblading Academy.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS FROM A MICROBLADING PROCEDURE LAST? On average, it should last one to one-and-a-half years, but the result will be different on each person. It depends on the type of skin someone has, the home skincare regimen they use, and the activities they have on a daily basis. Being in the sun, using lightning skincare products, some anti-aging products, or tanning booths will make the pigment fade quicker. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS DURING OR AFTER THE PROCEDURE? I haven't seen any side effects other than a little redness for a few hours right after the procedure.

Redefining Space. One Room At A Time.
HOW DO YOU MATCH THE COLOR OF MY NATURAL EYEBROWS? The color is determined according to the natural color of the hairs in the eyebrows and on top of your head. WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE IT? IS IT PERMANENT? My goal is to make the client 100 percent happy. I consult with the client for each step I take. There is a six-week mandatory touch-up appointment included in the price where they can express their concerns and make any changes at that time. In the case they already have had the touch-up and still are not happy, they will have to wait until it fades or a more drastic option would be laser removal.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Not so very very long ago, when I was just a young girl, spring was an exciting time for me. The burgeoning rhythm of people on farms nearby, the imbedded mechanisms of businesses that serviced them and the celebrations of the small town in which I lived heralded with great flourish the coming of this most happy season. But now that I live in an ever expanding city, this doesn’t seem quite so true anymore. Nonetheless my agrarian roots are still in focus - still alive and well and flourishing. Each year I can hardly wait until the heads of the first crocuses and daffodils burst through the earth, to see the fields grow greener, the buds break forth on the trees and on the bushes everywhere - the bright yellow of the forsythia, the deepening rose of the azalea. People just seem to smile more. They talk about joining farm cooperatives, going to fresh air markets or buying “green.” Outside the hardware stores, the big boxes, grocery stores, even drug stores -- they are all called into service - the people are out there, dragging little wagons behind them, loading up the trunks of their cars with hanging plants, bright red geraniums and grass seed to firm up their yards for summer display. Neighbors who haven’t seen much of each other all winter, meet at the bottom of their driveways and talk about their gardens. And some, like me, go by yards especially admired, taking some ideas from other gardens home. There is so much to do. Mulch to put down, flower pots to line steps leading to the house. Window boxes to put up right away, crowded with a whole array of cheerful bloom.
Those with the space and the inclination go out back in their vegetable gardens, taking their hoes in hand, spreading the compost they’ve gathered all winter and planting those little seedlings they’ve grown tenderly in egg cartons for the last several weeks. Others get out their new walking gear: new shoes, headbands, ipods, and they head for an inspired walk through the green spaces and walkways surrounding the city. There they meet a veritable parade: children on bicycles, babies in strollers, dogs jumping up and down, tugging on leashes, joggers zooming in and out. Some get out their spring clothes, others go shopping for new ones. My neighbor gets out her deck furniture and the new cushions she just bought to go with it.
Some go for rides in the country, take a trip to the zoo, gather things together for a picnic, and check out baseball schedules and spring concerts in the park. They do spring cleaning. Windows are washed. Some paint their living rooms, buy new furniture. Garages are sorted through. Cars are spruced up - engines steam cleaned, trunks and carpeting made new, hand wax applied. Bushes are trimmed and a new hose is bought. The more somber dinnerware of fall and winter is put up and the pink, turquoise and blue dishes grace tables once more. Place mats for the table are replaced if needed and a bouquet of daisies sits in the center. Working in the soil, buying seasonal equipment, being outside, planting and planning and spring cleaning - whether city or country - the rituals of spring seem pretty much the same to me.

We are excited to kickoff our “What Have You Had Done” column with Julie Smith, a client of Fabulously Flawless, in Hickory, NC (they have a sister location in North Raleigh). Julie grew up in Hudson, a small town just outside of Hickory, and currently works for Hickory Cardiology Associates as their billing office supervisor. Permanent makeup has exploded in popularity and so have the techniques makeup artists use to achieve the looks their clients desire. Women who want to shorten their morning routines and wear less makeup, for instance, will love procedures like permanent eyeliner and lipstick. However, permanent makeup is not just for cosmetic reasons, and many of these services cross over into the medical field, including scar camouflage and areola tattooing after breast reconstruction for cancer survivors. Julie chose Fabulously Flawless after seeing their Facebook page and decided to give them a try more than a year ago and she is thrilled that she did. Her initial goal was to wear less makeup,
and the first procedure she had done was permanent eyeliner. Stacey Heffner Abboud, a Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional and owner of Fabulously Flawless, performed her procedure. Julie was impressed and has remained a client ever since. In addition to the eyeliner she has had her eyebrows done as well as Rejuvapen on her cheekbones and mouth area. Julie says she wasn’t nervous before her first procedure and that it met her expectations. When asked if it was painful she said while the eyeliner was completely painless, the eyebrows hurt a little right on her brow bones. Stacy, a former registered nurse who holds several certifications, tunes into her clients’ needs during a procedure. “The Rejuvapen was a little painful on my cheekbones and around my mouth,” said Julie. “Anytime I felt any discomfort, Stacey would stop for a few seconds to make sure I was ok before she continued.” We wanted to know what surprised Julie the most about the after of these procedures, and she immediately exclaimed, “How much better my skin and pores looked after the Rejuvapen procedure. The texture of my skin
looked amazing. Also, I liked my eyebrows looking thicker in the sparse areas. The overall result of my permanent makeup was gorgeous. I love it.” She shared some parting words of advice for anyone considering permanent makeup or other similar procedures. “Always make sure you do your research and know that not all technicians are certified to perform the services they are offering. One of the main reasons I chose Stacey was because she is a Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional. That made me feel much more comfortable knowing she had spent the time obtaining a certification and had hands on classroom training. Stacey is delightful and always answers any questions I may have. She strives to give the best outcome possible and will not give you false expectations. In my opinion, you should start off with whatever you feel needs the most improvement...your face is a blank canvas and Stacey can paint it beautifully.” When asked what’s next on her wishlist she said “permanent lipstick,” with a grin. TRAINER TALK THREE INGREDIENT RECIPE FOR GORGEOUS SUMMER ABS Written by: Author/Trainer: Peggy Jones Considering that we all want it, isn’t it surprising how few of us manage to achieve that washboard look? Yes, it’s more complicated than knocking out a few crunches but it is not as hard as you think. As a fitness professional, these are the three key ingredients that work for me and my clients. INGREDIENT ONE: ADD WEIGHT AND VARIETY TO YOUR CRUNCHES Building larger muscles in the rectus abdominis (the “six pack” muscle that runs down the front of your belly) will help give you a toned look. To increase the size of the muscle you need to encourage more muscle fibers to fire during your workout and encourage the fibers to grow by challenging them to lift a heavier load. This can be as simple as adding new exercises into your routine and adding a dumbbell or kettlebell to the standards. Some great exercises to add variety are planks, mountain climbers, and leg lifts and hip lifts on your back. Add weight by adding a medicine ball to your Russian Twists, crunches holding a weight, and leg lifts holding a dumbbell between your feet.
INGREDIENT TWO: TRAIN THE SIDES AND BACK OF YOUR CORE People frequently hit a wall in their core training when they neglect the muscles that assist the abs and help support the lower back and spine. An added bonus is that rear core exercises will tone your glutes and training the sides of the core will also add to that muscular look. Some exercises to add to your routine are floor or ball bridges (try resting dumbbells on your hips to add more challenge), deadlifts, side planks, and side crunches. INGREDIENT THREE: SHED YOUR “WINTER COAT” To fully enjoy those strong ab muscles we need to see them and the belly is where those last few winter pounds like to hang out. Getting these off takes a plan and accountability. Grab a notebook and find a buddy who also wants to shed a few pounds. Set goals for your food and drink consumption focusing most of your
choices on healthy options. Restrictive diets have low rates of compliance, so allow yourself a little treat while shifting to primarily healthy choices. Log everything in your notebook and check in each week with your buddy to exchange advice and encouragement. You will be amazed how keeping a record and sharing with a supportive pal can motivate you to healthier food and drink decisions. HERE’S A SAMPLE WEEK: • Sunday: Log your food and check in with your buddy / Russian twists and deadlifts. • Monday: Log / Side crunches and side planks • Tuesday: Log / Ball bridges and weighted crunches • Wednesday: Log and check in with your buddy /Leg lifts and mountain climbers • Thursday: Log / Weighted crunches and Russian twists • Friday: Log / Side and front planks • Saturday: Recovery

A PLACE IN THE SUN, based on An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and starring a young Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters, is about George Eastman, a struggling young man who works as an elevator operator in Chicago and then goes to California to ask his rich uncle, whom he barely knows, to give him a job in his factory, which he does – but not before he tells George it is against company policy to date coworkers. Nonetheless, George soon begins a secret relationship with Alice, a girl who works alongside him on the assembly line. When George’s hard work gets him both a promotion and a relationship with Angela, the beautiful debutante he loved at first sight - daughter of his uncle’s friend - he tries to extricate himself from his association with Alice. However, Alice has absolutely no intention of letting George go - she is pregnant and expects him to marry her. Desperate, George doesn’t know what to do. All he knows is that his glittering dream of a better life may be ruined. WIVES AND DAUGHTERS, an engaging adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s book, is a BBC mini-series about love and family relationships against the background of the decline of the landed gentry and the rise of the middle class. On one hand, there is the squire and his two sons the elder is secretly married to a French woman and the younger is more interested in scientific research than in his father’s estate. And on the other hand, there is the respected country doctor, his sensible and virtuous daughter, his shallow but very pretty stepdaughter and of course his wife – a widow who dedicates herself to delicate manners and a search for a wealthy husband for her daughter. THE RED SHOES, exquisitely digitalized, is the one film that made people who weren’t interested in ballet stand up and cheer. Though the ballet is the centerpiece, this film is every bit as much about the people who are part of it: the composer, the obsessive director of the ballet company who commissions his score, and the ballerina whose passion is the sort that makes the red shoes keep on dancing. But it’s not that simple: when the dancer falls in love with the composer, one passion threatens to consume the other.
