Erica DeLong TWENTY QUESTIONS WITH

North Carolina native and blond bombshell, Erica DeLong, has spent years winning over the hearts of her listeners on G105’s Showgram with Bob Dumas. She’s got it all - from a wicked sense of humor to a heart of gold and we are getting down and dirty with this wife, mom and hard working woman!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO RADIO? I was a sophomore at Peace College (William Peace University) and my now famous friend, Fortune Feimster, was interning at Bob and the Showgram and said…“you should give this a shot!” She was a mentor and someone I looked up to, so I applied! I heard nothing for weeks due to so many applicants, but I was determined to be a Showgram intern. I basically showed up until someone said ok, you’re in! Tommy Owen, a dear friend, was the executive producer at the time and became a great teacher/mentor. The summer of my junior year I was hired as the associate producer for the show and I’ve never looked back! I would wake up for work as friends were coming in for the night, do the show, classes right after and pretty much haven’t slept since then! Ha! Best decision ever…it has been a wonderful journey!

• Written By Heather Green • Photo by - Somer. Owner/Principal Photographer. Revolution Studios, www.revolution-studios.com 14 | triangle style

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? Oprah! Hands down…I wanted to be the next Oprah. Radio is where I landed, which is perfectly fine and I’m certainly not done “growing” yet. Who knows what curve ball this life will throw my way.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? LEAST FAVORITE? I have to have a tea with the “good ice” every single day! The small round crushed ice is my absolute favorite. When I travel to other countries, the first thing I need when I get back is some real southern tea. I can drink sweet or unsweet…as long as it’s the real deal…fresh brewed! As far as food...I love tacos and quesadillas! My least favorite is seafood, I’m allergic which stinks because my family loves a good fish fry!

YOUR MOST FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP IN THE TRIANGLE? TJ Maxx, Belk Crabtree, Crabtree Mall, Dillards, love local boutiques…shopping local, my diamonds always come from Diamonds Direct Crabtree but costume jewelry…the bigger, the better! Moon and Lola is a fav! One thing about it, I may gain 5 pounds but my accessories and shoes always fit!

ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10, HOW FUNNY ARE YOU? 1…LOL. Some people may say I’m funny but that’s because they are laughing at me, not with me. I say silly stuff…not necessarily funny. In radio you share your life daily, so people may find you funny, but I would bomb as a comedian.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Extra, as my husband would say! During the summer and spring months, I’m all about color. The more color, the better. Fall and winter, I go in to hibernation...with loud and bright accessories and every winter boot known to man! I can go from pearls to spikes! Camo to preppy sweaters…The main thing is feeling trendy and pretty! I do think you dress for success, even in radio. I get dressed every single day (hats are for those days I’m running behind at 4am…often). It makes me feel better and plus you never know who you may run in to.

(919)833.0107 WWW.PLUMHAIRATELIER.COM 1028 OBERLIN RD, SUITE 228 RALEIGH, NC 27605

WHAT ARE YOU REALLY GOOD AT? I can manage multiple tasks at once really well. I tend to thrive on that crazy busy schedule. I can also whistle really loud! I won a contest growing up, still the proud champion. spring | 15

fix. fill. finish. : fix :

Everyone tells you, you won’t know a love like being a mother until you have your own and it’s so true. I will never forget looking at my son for the first time. I wouldn’t let the nurses take him away to even weigh him. I was instantly, madly in love. The other surprising part is breastfeeding - it is SO HARD! I never realized so many strangers (women) would see and touch my breasts…oh but they did! Whatever it took, I was determined to breastfeed. Thank goodness for amazing nurses. We had a midwife who was an angel.

WHAT WOULD YOU GO BACK AND CHANGE (IF YOU COULD TIME TRAVEL, OF COURSE) I would change my eating habits long ago…I try hard to eat decent, but it takes effort. I have friends where it comes natural to eat kale every day and juice all of their veggies…not me. I have to promise myself to avoid the cookie aisle every visit to the grocery store! The same goes for getting to the gym. I’m great once there, but the getting there part is like a magic act.

FAVORITE GUEST YOU’VE EVER HAD ON THE SHOW Interviewing President Obama was amazing! No matter your political affiliation, he was still the President of the United States at the time. We didn’t even talk politics! I don’t share where I stand politically on air because I respect all sides and want everyone to equally be heard. The coolest part about this interview is my son Easton got to do the interview with me. He was turning 1 soon and had actually just received a letter in the mail saying happy birthday from Obama. I asked if he really signed those letters and he said yes. The interview ended up making international news because we talked about regular everyday stuff like his daughters, being a dad and what it was like for him when they started dating. His response…“good luck, they have to deal with secret service”

YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA Hands down the people, they’re amazing. I have been lucky to live in different cities and travel many places…North Carolina is fantastic with a great balance. I also like that we are becoming more cultural too. And of course it’s beauty! I grew up going to Atlantic Beach and the mountains, how lucky are we to live in this state!

NORTH HILLS FLAGSHIP STORE Raleigh (919) 754-8430 PARK WEST VILLAGE Cary (919) 465-7441

WHAT DID YOU ALMOST NAME YOUR CHILD? Easton’s almost name – That’s a funny story! He didn’t have a name at all until we legit walked out of the hospital. My husband and I could not figure out a name. We even wrote names on a list, put on the fridge and tried to narrow down…still nothing. I said write down his favorite and I’d pick mine and when he was born we would select. After it came down to it, my husband gave me the final decision because he watched me birth baby Easton! For some reason, I was set on Easton and Evan’s meaning (his middle name) meant God is good/gracious, so that was a definite for me. For the next kid, when that day comes, we plan to have names picked out well in advance which we’ve already agreed on a girls name.

WHAT CELEBRITY STYLE DO YOU ADMIRE? I LOVE fashion so I can’t pick just one! I tend to gravitate towards the Victoria Beckham solid numbers and then want to add the big “Beyonce type” jewelry pieces with it. Blake Lively, Kate Middleton, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce. Again, I love to switch it up! Camo to pearls! One thing, I own a TON of black dresses! So whichever celebrity has the most frilly black dresses, that’s a yes in my book.

DREAM JOB? I feel very blessed to do what I love. I’d say a dream is to one day also own my own business and still to continue my passion.

BIGGEST BLOOPER ON THE SHOW, EVER! Bloopers happen daily, its part of living your life out on the air. MY WORST mistake that I still wish I could take back…Interviewing Charlie Murphy in studio. We were talking about relationships and I jokingly asked if his wife wore the pants in the relationship. He then said “She passed from cancer years ago” …That was the worst moment in radio ever for me. He didn’t seem upset, but I felt so disrespectful and embarrassed. I apologized numerous times off air and I didn’t say much for remainder of the interview. From that day forward, I make sure to research my guest much better!!

IF YOU COULD MEET ONE FAMOUS PERSON IN HISTORY WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

(919)355-8268

www.tansformations.com

God...I know that seems like a basic answer but I have so many questions of what it was like when he was creating everything. Life on other planets… What’s the plan after we are gone. So many questions…but I guess I can wait to find that out at a later date. Marilyn Monroe, an American beauty who had an affair (or a few encounters) with the President. What really happened between them...how she really felt about being a sex symbol during that time. I wonder what she would think of the world today?

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION… My news years resolution is to cut back on wasteful spending – spend wisely. I just paid off my college loans the other day, and that felt awesome! My parents split that expense with me to teach me the value of a dollar/responsibility. I felt proud to walk in and pay that loan for the last time.

FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF. CARRYING GIFTS AND APPAREL FOR MEN & WOMEN WITH A HIGH EMPHASIS ON LOCALLY MADE!! DOWNTOWN RALEIGH

300 W HARGETT STREET : 919-460-2554

I’m a honest person that wears my heart on my sleeve...I love that. What you see, is what you get. I also laugh a lot, which makes me happy. I laugh when I get uncomfortable. So when I cry, you can sometimes catch me laughing. It’s a weird habit. My mom does the same thing.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

18 | triangle style

Hopefully, I will have another baby should God decide to bless us with more. Still in radio but also branching out in other areas like TV, magazines, and I will have started my own business. I definitely plan to see more of the world with family. I look at each day as a gift and don’t take any of this life for granted. I love to learn new things...so I don’t have a set plan for 10 years but whatever brings happiness, a challenge and will allow for my husband and I to provide a good education for our children… I’m ready! I’m thankful for today, that’s for sure.

While it’s been said that a woman can conquer the world with the right pair of shoes, a change in seasons can leave us wondering just exactly what that is. With spring at our feet, you may feel ready to break out your pretty new sandals, but the weather feels more like your warm, winter boots. Help! Shoes are a perennial dilemma every spring. You are so ready to rock your fabulous new outfit, and you feel like a million bucks! Yet, when it’s time to put your shoes on, it all falls apart and you have no clue what to wear. While you’re ready to rock your lighter, brighter spring looks, it’s still a bit chilly for your fave summer sandals, but your clunky winter boots aren’t appropriate either. What you need now are shoes that bridge the gap and give you the best of both worlds, but you don’t need a closet the size of Carrie Bradshaw’s to have the right shoes for every outfit. Just a little insider information to take you through the season with style. Here are my best picks to give you a leg up this season:

SPRING JEANS ARE ARRIVING A MUST IS THIS HIGH RISE BUTTON FRONT JEAN BY PRINCIPLE DENIM

Peep-toe Booties Whether sky-high, flat or somewhere in-between, peep-toe booties are a gorgeous look for spring. They gi e you a bit more coverage (read: warmth) when you need it, but the peep-toe allows you to show off a pop of color in your pedi and evokes the feeling of warmer days to come. WEAR WITH: ankle-length trousers, cropped denim with a stepped hem, short dresses BEWARE: If you have heavier calves, peeptoe booties may cut you off and make your legs look shorter and heavier. Choose booties in a color close to your skintone with a bit of a heel to elongate your leg instead.

WEAR WITH: Denim culottes, cropped denim, ankle-length trousers, midi skirts BEWARE: If you wear a long, flowy skirt or full-legged pants, they may get caught in the back of your shoe. Choose a shorter style to avoid this wardrobe malfunction that could trip you up.

Western Boots in Bright Colors Not ready to give up your boots just yet? This sp ing trend keeps your feet covered and dry during those impromptu spring showers. But to keep your look from feeling too wintry, choose a bold bright rather than a bland neutral for an up-to-the-moment look. WEAR WITH:Dresses, skinny denim BEWARE: While the western look may be hot this season, avoid going for an overly western look or you risk being mistaken for Annie Oakley.

Kitten Heels

1603 N. Market Dr., Raleigh • (919) 876-8677 Tues. - Fri. 10am-6pm Sat.10am-5pm

TheBraPatch.com

A classic, kitten heels are so pretty and feminine. Low, delicate heels that come in the form of pumps, slingbacks and more, these versatile shoes evoke Audrey Hepburn and add a touch of elegance to everything you put them with. Try them in mixed prints, bejeweled or with texture for something unexpected. WEAR WITH: classic trousers, cropped trousers, denim, dresses BEWARE: Kitten heels can be delicate, so be careful don’t overpower them with a lot of full, flowy fabric. Keep your look simple and elegant.

Pastels

What’s the fastest way to update your shoes for spring? Choose your favorite style in a pastel hue. Pastels are one of the season’s hottest trends and, much like a fresh coat of paint, put a fresh spin on your favorite outfit, whether jeans and a tee, or a dressy dress. WEAR WITH: Everything! BEWARE: Choose your color combinations wisely. While pastels may set off an all-white outfit, they may not be the best choice for black or other dark colors. Create balance with your color combination and be sure your pastel shoes punctuate your look without creating a distraction 24 | triangle style

Need for Transparency

Make any outfit more fun by sporting clear shoes, accessories, or sheer clothes this season. Not only are clear bags helpful for instantly spotting what’s in your bag, but they can be a fun way to show off that new wallet or lipstick, too! Sheer fabrics are also a great way to stay cool as summer approaches. Need another clear-cut way to incorporate the trend into your spring wardrobe? Opt for transparent sunglass frames or heels. Straight off the runways of New York Fashion Week -

FIVE OF OUR FAVORITE FASHION TRENDS FOR THIS SEASON.

Whether you incorporate these trends with a playful accent piece or go all out with a fully-committed outfit, any of these styles will be sure to turn heads.

Fringe With Benefits

It’s easy to see why fringe was spotted all over last year’s NYFW runways by designers like Dior and Balmain. For a tame introduction into fringe, opt for an accessory, like a lightweight scarf or crossbody bag. For a more daring approach, go full throttle into this trend with a fringe skirt or jacket. Airy kimonos are also a great way to sport the trend without adding a heavy extra piece.

Denim + Blues

Most would argue that denim is, undeniably, a staple every season. While we definitely agree, denim is being taken to new heights with unexpected twists this spring. Powdered hues, like pinks, taupes, and mints, provide a fun change for the classic staple. Editors and fashion influencers alike will also be sporting straight-legged denims, as well as high-rise and cropped lengths that offer great solutions for day-to-night wear. 26 | triangle style

Make a Bright Bold Statement

effortless style

Neutrals may always be in, but bold statement pieces are going global this season! Designers like Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford took to the runways to set the forecast for this 2018 fashion trend. Whether you choose to create a bright monochromatic outfit, or simply want to keep one bold piece as the star of the show, you’ll certainly be making a statement everywhere you go.

Flowers in Bloom

This spring, harness your flower power! Florals are always a classic, but this spring they’re an especially on-trend print, as they were seen all over runways last fall. We love it because it can be treated as a neutral, which makes it easy for accessorizing any outfit. Sport the trend with some floralprinted swoon-worthy pumps or a lightweight dress, and you’ll instantly be spring-ready. - Lila Floral Dress Fab’rik, Cameron Village

WE ALL HAVE THEM: DAYS WHERE WE WANT TO JUMP OUT OF BED AND GO ABOUT OUR DAY LOOKING POLISHED WITH MINIMAL EFFORT. THEN, THERE’S DAYS WHERE WE WANT TO PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS TO LOOK OUR ABSOLUTE BEST.

WHETHER YOU’RE THE FORMER OR LATTER ON A REGULAR BASIS, EACH LOOK SERVES ITS OWN PURPOSE AND CAN EQUALLY GIVE YOU THE CONFIDENCE TO TAKE ON THE DAY. MAKEUP SHOULD ALWAYS BE FUN, SO FEEL FREE TO CUSTOMIZE EACH LOOK TO YOUR OWN TASTES AND COMFORT LEVEL.

Sandy, mother of 2 in Apex, is a "less is more" type of gal. Makeup artist and beauty editor, Kimberly Arnold, created two separate looks: a quick way to get out the door while still feeling polished and a bolder look she can reserve for special occasions or when she's simply wanting more. "I usually don't wear makeup because I'm so busy, but the "less" look left my skin glowing and natural-looking! And it was very quick and easy. I also loved the way my eyes looked with "more" makeup! I can't wait to try it on myself the next time I go out!" 30 | triangle style

FEMALE ARTISTS

CAM RALEIGH CELEBRATES

THIS SPRING, INCLUDING LEGENDARY DESIGNER DAME ZANDRA RHODES

Designer Dame Zandra Rhodes brought the world of high fashion to the Triangle with a runway show at downtown gallery CAM Raleigh on February 3. Rhodes, a London-based designer known for lavish silk screen prints and flowing silhouettes, is exhibiting garments from her archives in her exhibit “TEXTILE, PRINT, AND FORM: A LIFETIME OF MAGICAL EXPERIMENTATION” AT CAM UNTIL JUNE 10. Photos from Left to Right: You can see five elaborate garments by British fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes at CAM Raleigh starting Feb. 2. Rhodes has designed for legends from Diana, Princess of Wales, to rock star Freddie Mercury, and she is one of three talented female artists CAM is featuring this spring: herself, Durham resident and fashion illustrator Ann Thaden, and artist Anne Lindberg of New York.

Precious Lovell, who teaches art and design at North Carolina State University’s College of Design, toured Rhodes’ exhibit in February and met her. “Zandra is a textile designer first and foremost,” Lovell said. “She founded the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. In the world of fashion, she’s an icon.” Rhodes chose to make her February artist talk (a tradition for exhibited artists at CAM Raleigh) a chance to show off her styles on the runway. What else would you expect from a queen of fashion? The designer chatted with the audience as the models, sporting colorful bobbed wigs resembling her own bright pink hairdo, showed off 18 colorful pieces. The garments were from her recent MatchesFashion.com collection, inspired by Rhodes’ popular looks of the 1970s and 1980s. Some of those original, whimsical pieces are the ones on view at CAM right now. The five garments include black-and-white dresses, some of them adorned with cactus or Star Wars motifs. There’s even a slashed punk dress from Rhodes’ reputation-making “The Conceptual Chic Collection” from 1977. Taking in the garments, which appeared on the runway between 1971 and 1987, is like a glimpse into fashion history.

More than 25 students from NCSU’s College of Design, including students in a class taught by Lovell called “Print and Surface Design,” got a special tour of the exhibit led by Rhodes herself. The experience was serendipitous; Lovell had assigned her students a screenprinting project requiring the same techniques that Rhodes has used for decades. Examining her designs up close and hearing the successful designer speak about persevering in a competitive industry was the perfect field trip. “[Zandra] has stayed true to herself,” said Lovell (whose work has been exhibited at CAM, too). “She creates the clothes she wants to create. She’s not a trend follower. She’s been able develop her product, and people followed her for what she did. … They loved her voice, her particular type of creativity.” CAM’s other spring artists have exciting exhibits as well. Ann Thaden is a Durham resident with a passion for fashion like Rhodes. Her exhibit “The Closet Interview” is

titled after her podcast of the same name, in which she interviews fashion notables and uses their conversations as inspiration for her watercolors. “My work explores how we use fashion to communicate and connect with ourselves and the world around us,” Thaden explained on CAM’s website. “Fashion is intimately intertwined with identity.” Lindberg’s exhibit “the long sun” is a collection of line drawings plus a central thread installation. The artist resides in

New York’s Hudson River Valley, and her colored pencil pieces evoke the life-giving light of the sun as it rises (or sets) over a peaceful landscape. You can see all three artists’ work at CAM until June 10.

When it comes to snacking, I feel as though there should be some sort of award out there for people like myself, who simply cannot stop snacking and will buy just about any NEW snack item that hits the grocery store shelves – no kidding – they know my name at Publix. So when it comes to trends in snackery – I’m your girl!

FOOD TRENDS: 2018 “HEALTHY” SNACK ATTACK

Not only do I have a raging sweet tooth, but I actually get EXCITED when I find a new savory item – it doesn’t take a lot to get this girl going! Who knew there are actual snacks “trends” that are introduced each year, giving people like me a reason to go grocery shopping one extra time, in search for the hottest snack styles! Here are the finalists…in my professional opinion. — Heather Green

Nature’s Bakery Double Chocolate Brownie

I LOVE my chocolate and probably take it a little more seriously than most, so when I see the word “Brownie” and “Nature”, I can’t help but open it up right there in the store! Nature’s Bakery released their Brownie bar in stores recently – Non-GMO, whole grains, no high fructose corn syrup, etc. But unfortunately, that doesn’t make up for the flavor (sad face). I have to admit that I was disappointed in the texture and the flavor – and yes, I AM picky about my chocolate snacks, but the “yum” just wasn’t there for me. It’s not BAD, it’s just did not live up to the hype that I was all fired up about. No two taste buds are the same, so check out any local grocer or Amazon to try this brownie bar – not too bad at $4.99 a box! 2.75 Try-Angles

Emerald Dill Pickle Cashews

If you are like me and love a salty snack as much as sweet one, I think you’re gonna like this one! It was just too intriguing NOT to test out – cashews AND dill pickles? Honestly, that flavor combo could have gone either way, but it is a winner in my book! I’m not a HUGE pickle fan but like them fried and dipped in ranch. I REALLY like cashews and bonus, they are healthy. The salt content is, well, let’s say higher than a nutritionist would approve of, but you’re getting some great goodness from those nuts. And there’s nothing artificial in them according to the bag. A little goes a long way with these babies, and after a few handfuls, you’re good! I really liked the crunch with the tart pickle-y combination. This is a really good snack if you are craving chips! Available for around $5 a bag at most drug stores and on Amazon. 4 Try-Angles

Perfect Bar – Dark Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter

My most favorite candy bar in the universe is a Reese Cup. Hands down, they are my one weakness (ok, ONE of my weaknesses!) So when I stumbled upon what is labeled a “Perfect Bar”, I HAD to try it. I was VERY skeptical, but hopeful as I tore into what claims to be a “perfect” snack – knowing it was healthy. And as I saw what appeared to be an uncooked cookie strip, my excitement dwindled slightly. But boy oh boy, was I wrong. This Perfect Bar lives up to its name, no doubt about it. The smooth peanut butter paired with the small, cold chocolate chips is just that – perfection! Really, run, do not walk, to Publix and grab these up – I predict a buyout once they are discovered!! On the downside, they are a bit pricey. About $3 a bar (but a good sized bar and tough to finish in one sitting) and you have to keep them refrigerated, but well worth it. No joke, the Perfect Bar is giving my Reese’s a run for their money! 4.5 Try-Angles

365 Organic Fruit Strips

Do yourself a favor and stock up on these little delicious wonder snacks! 365 has become a staple in my house and they certainly did NOT disappoint with their Organic Fruit Strips. I count them as one of my “daily fruits” and the natural sugars really do give you a little boost, even though the sugar content is a little high. All great ingredients, all organic and a 10 on the yummy-ness scale. They are a softer strip, similar to gummies, so they are easy for my 2 year old to eat as well! Low sodium, fat-free and all good ingredients equals winner in my snack book! These little sweet dreams are available for around $1 at Whole Foods. 4 Try-Angles

You might think having the gift of the gab is the most vital element of communication, but listening is even more critical. People who listen well get ahead in business and enjoy healthy relationships more than those who don't pay attention to conversations. Don't worry if you don't consider yourself adept in the listening department yet though since you can improve your skills with the following tips. — Written By Bridgett Webber

36 | triangle style

PREPARE

Get ready when you know you need to listen well. Think about the data you're likely to hear, such as specific language to listen out for or crucial information. If you're attending a job interview, for instance, you might expect to hear words like commitment, salary, and job history. Theintention to listen accurately will help you focus and gather information.

PRACTICE

Strengthening your listening skills need not be stressful or tedious; you can listen for pleasure. Practice by listening to interesting lectures, podcasts, and audiobooks. Aim to hear the words spoken and understand what's said. If necessary, hit pause to allow data to seep into your mind. Also, practice listening during everyday conversations. If you're aren't sure what someone says or means, ask for clarification. It's alright to request that people explain what they've said if you don't catch it the first time around. Doing so will help you get into the habit of listening to gain knowledge rather than being absentminded.

REPEAT BACK WHAT YOU HEAR

You don't need to repeat everything you're told after it's said, but occasionally doing so will deepen your listening and comprehension skills. When you tell someone what you think they've said, they can correct you if you're wrong. You also show you're listening and trying to understand the other person, which is a compliment that will improve your relationships. Repeating the exact language you hear isn't necessary though. Using different words to say the same thing will help data seep into your memory, so you have good recall.

WATCH PEOPLE AS THEY TALK

Redefining Space. One Room At A Time.

You'll understand what people say better if you watch them as well as using your ears to hear them. People speak with their body language, often revealing added information. Hence, angry people might use words to infer they aren't pleased and a gesture like making fists with their hands. Watching them lets you know the intensity of their emotions. Likewise, people disclose information with the tone of their voice, so listen to how people speak as well as their language.

FOCUS

When your mind wanders, you don't hear correctly. You miss data and your mind pieces conversations together using assumptions about what was said; this is how misunderstandings occur.

the right space ...use what you have. (919) 342.7196

The-Right-Space.com therightspace2016@gmail.com : stephanie finucane :

Focus on being present during conversations rather than getting side-tracked, and you'll understand and retain knowledge. If you lose concentration, bring your thoughts back to the present moment, and you'll be a better listener.

DON'T PLAN A REPLY

People often stop listening while they prepare how to reply to what was already said or to express an opinion. Their minds are full of what they want to say, and they miss the rest of the conversation as they mull over thoughts. During communication, listen attentively and take your turn to speak when someone's finished talking. Others will appreciate you taking the time to heed what's said, and there's less chance you'll accidentally butt in if you aren't waiting to express yourself. You'll know when it's your turn as people will look at you and pause. Or, when asking a question, they might raise their tone of voice at the tail end of the final word they say. Improving your listening skills will enhance your working and social relationships. At the same time, doing so will help you understand people and glean information. Once you've mastered the art of active listening, you'll become an intelligent communicator as opposed to an average conversationalist.

Hi Anna. Last issue you talked about what someone could do for a drooping eyelid; this got me to thinking about my own concern: The corners of my mouth are starting to droop and I am starting to always look sad, which is not the case at all! What are my different options to turning my (hate to say it) frown upside down? - Thank You, Catherine.

Catherine, this is a great question about a concern we hear about all the time! The human smile is extremely complex, and there are over 40 muscles at work to create our unique expressions. The drooping you’ve described is most likely from a combination of the natural volume loss that occurs as we age paired with the overworking of the main muscle responsible for your frown. Luckily, there are a few tools in our arsenal that can help! Botox, when expertly injected into the depressor anguli oris (the main facial muscle associated with frowning), can help loosen that muscle and relieve the downward pull on the corners of the mouth. Another option, if you’re experiencing volume loss in the area just outside the corner of the mouth, would be an injection of a dermal filler like Juvederm. Lastly, like the rest of our body, our faces fall subject to gravity as we age, which can result in fat pad displacement that has the potential to weigh down your smile. Voluma is the only FDA-approved mid-face filler for this area and can help restore some of that volume loss. Sometimes, it’s all of these factors contributing to your frown, so a combination of these products may get you the most natural and beautiful results. I’d recommend a full facial analysis with an experienced injector to come up with a personalized solution to get your smile back. LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR NEXT PROJECT

It's 8:00 pm, your guests are arriving first thing in the morning and you feel paralyzed. Will they judge the way you live? Will spending an entire week together ruin your relationship? Hosting houseguests is never easy, but all it takes is a little bit of planning to prevent problems and impress your visitors. Follow these eight tips and you'll be able to sleep well, knowing you've met all of your guests' needs. — Written By Anna Lutz

EIGHT EASY WAYS TO

IMPRESS YOUR HOUSE GUESTS

54 | triangle style

SPEND A NIGHT IN YOUR GUEST ROOM. If you only take one piece of advice from this article, make it this one: You might think you've set up the perfect guest room, but until you've spent a night sleeping in it, you can never be truly sure that it's comfortable for your overnight guests. Sleeping in the guest room will alert you to funny furniture arrangements, bumpy beds, absent amenities (like a nightlight or tissue box) and other potential inconveniences.

ANTIQUES, VINTAGE, MODERN AND FUNKY FINDS.

PREPARE A LOCAL DISH If you're hosting guests from India, your first instinct might be to cook up a spicy curry for dinner. Italians? Make it pasta! However, your guests are more likely to be impressed if you prepare a local specialty. Chances are good that your foreign version of their traditional dishes won't compare to the real thing, and if they really wanted to eat food from their home country then they probably would have stayed home. Show off local and seasonal ingredients to give them a truly memorable meal.

MAKE YOUR BATHROOM GUEST-FRIENDLY. You know where to find the extra toilet (in the linen closet) and the toilet plunger (in the other bathroom), that doesn't mean your guests do, too. Spare them the awkward moments and keep all the essentials in the guest bathroom. This includes toilet paper, a plunger and a small garbage can. You can even go the extra mile by bringing home hotel toiletries for guests who may have forgotten shampoo, soap, lotion or a shower cap. Display these in a cute basket on your countertop.

GET YOUR WI-FI READY. Wireless internet is no longer a luxury. Today, it's an essential tool for all travelers, and good hosts make it easy for their guests to log on. Make your wireless password visible by placing it in a cute picture frame close to your router. You can also set up a second wireless network just for guests; check your router's manual (or online software) for instructions. Usually, it takes less than five minutes, and it protects you from bandwidth overages and illegal online activity.

TURN THE LIGHTS ON Outside, that is. If your guests will be arriving after sunset, don't leave them driving around in the dark, looking for dimly lit house numbers. Unscrew one of your regular exterior lightbulbs and replace it with a brightly colored blue, red or green bulb. Then, simply tell your guests that your house is the one with the colorful light. Leave the colored bulb up for the duration of their visit as an easy landmark, then replace it with your regular bulb after your guests depart.

ANTICIPATE THE AM Have you ever awkwardly tip-toed around someone's home, trying to avoid waking them up while simultaneously wondering how it's humanly possible for someone to sleep so long? Don't put your guests in that position. Before you go to bed, lay out a morning plan, including what time you expect to wake up and what your guests can do if they wake up before you. At minimum, show them where the newspaper gets delivered and how to operate the coffee maker.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TOURIST INFORMATION If you frequently host out-of-town visitors, save your sanity with tourist information before they arrive.

Grab promotional magazines and brochures about your city and region, and have them on hand when your guests arrive. This way, instead of relying on your recommendations for things to do, your guests can peruse the publications to find things that appeal to their own hobbies and interests. If your city doesn't have a tourist information office, you can often find the same types of materials in the lobby of any local hotel.

ACCEPT GIFTS GRACIOUSLY Good guests arrive with a fantastic hostess gift in hand. A little preparation on your part can make receiving one of these gifts go smoothly. Have an extra vase in case your guests bring flowers and keep a good corkscrew for those times they bring wine (yes, even if you usually drink twist-top). Hosting houseguests can be stressful, but following these eight guidelines will make for a much less stressful stay for everyone involved. Your guests will appreciate the thought you've put into hosting, and you will appreciate the reduction in misunderstandings and mistakes that comes from being wellprepared. As word of your hosting skills spreads, you may just find your guest room fully booked.

GUACAMOLE DEVILED EGGS

IF YOU’RE A GUACAMOLE AND DEVILED EGG LOVER THESE ARE A MUST-MAKE

60 | triangle style

These deviled eggs with a creamy guacamole filling are amazingly (and surprisingly) delicious. To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first. I’ve seen them around on the web and decided to give these Mexicaninspired deviled eggs a try. AWESOME! I just kept adding ingredients to the filling mixture unti I got the taste like I liked it… savory, spicy (but not too much) while making sure the guacamole flavor wasn’t overpowering the egg yolks (so that you sti l know you’re eating a deviled e g!). I used sour cream instead of mayonnaise (I normally use mayo making deviled eggs)… so they would have a lighter and fluffier consistency and flavor paired with the avocado… amazingly delicious!

ingredients

12 hard boiled eggs, peeled and sliced lengthwise 2 medium ripe avocados 2 tablespoons lime juice 3 tablespoons minced red onion 1/4 cup sour cream 2 teaspoons freshly minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon kosher salt (more or less, to taste) 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (more or less, to taste) Optional oppings: fresh chopped cilantro, chili powder and/or sliced serrano peppers

SHOP WHAT’S HOT!

instructions

• Remove yolk from hard boiled eggs and place in a medium bowl. Mash yolk with a fork until crumbl . Set aside. • Slice avocados in half lengthwise, remove pit and scoop out the flesh with a spoon into a small bowl. Mash avocado with a fork. • Spoon mashed avocado into the bowl with the mashed yolks. Drizzle as evenly as possible with lime juice. • Add red onion, sour cream, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper and stir ell to combine. • Place yolk mixture in a piping bag or a plastic torage bag (if placing in a plastic torage bag, place in a corner of the bag and cut the corner tip off of the bag) • Squeeze mixture into the egg whites. • Top with fresh chopped cilantro, chili powder and/or sliced serrano peppers

INCORPORATING HOUSEPLANTS IN INTERIOR DESIGN DOES MORE THAN MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD If NASA could take us to space, we better believe them when they say that plants can do a body good. Yes, plants! And, we’re not talking about the type you ingest either. We’re talking about houseplants––the pretty ones that sit on your office desk or in your living room by the TV. Whether you knew it or not, bringing a little bit of the outdoors in actually serves more than just an ascetic purpose.

62 | triangle style

OPPOSITES ATTRACT When we inhale, we suck oxygen from the environment into our bodies. When we exhale, we release carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite. See why we attract? More plants means more room to breathe, literally. HERE’S AN INTERESTING TIDBIT: Not only do plants breathe, they sleep too. When plants sleep, photosynthesis stops and they begin to absorb oxygen just like us. The e are a few plants, however, that take in carbon dioxide at night like orchids, succulents and bromeliads making them the perfect plants to keep in your bedroom so long as they get plenty of sun during the day.

DAMPEN THE MOOD When we say dampen the mood, we don’t mean that in a bad way. Go back to your days in the science lab. Remember that process you were quizzed on called: transpiration. Yes! Thatword. It’s a good one to keep in your memory bank because transpiration, which naturally occurs in all plants, is key when it comes to warding off illness by way of moisture.

HOW DOES IT WORK? In a nutshell, a plant’s roots absorb moisture from the soil which is carried up through the plant all the way up to small pores located on the underside of its leaves. Themoisture is later released into the atmosphere as water vapor. This process accounts for 10 percent of atmospheric moisture on our planet. Don’t let the word moist dampen your mood. Indoor plants help to add a little moisture to an often arid home or office which has been proven to decrease the survival of viruses and bacterias.

SPACE CASE Take it from some of the smartest space babes and guys out there, houseplants are healing. If NASA researchers were doctors, they’d

prescribe one potted plant per 100 square feet of indoor livable space. Why? Extensive studies on their end have proved that airborne pollutants and toxins like carbon dioxide and formaldehyde can be removed from the leaves and roots of plants alone. The study, unlike an astronaut, is not up in the air. It’s just as real as space travel. NASA’S TOP PLANTS FOR REMOVING POLLUTANTS ARE: the Peace Lily, Golden Pothos, English Ivy, Chrysanthemum, Gerbera Daisy, Mother-In-Law’s Tongue (sometimes called snake plant), Bamboo Palm, Red-Edge Dracaena and the Spider Plant.

RAPID RECOVERY

While they may just look pretty, Kansas Sate University studies have actually proven that hospital patients who receive flo ers or plants actually recover at a faster rate than those who don’t have plants in their room. Physio-

logically speaking, discomfort, pain, anxiety, fatigue and systolic blood pressure all tend to lower just by bringing a little plant life into the room. How’s that for plant medicine?

WORK HARD. PLANT HARD. Naturally, no one likes to stay cooped-up inside from nine to five. Tha ’s why researchers from Texas A&M and the University of Michigan both agree that bringing nature into the workplace improves memory retention by up to 20 percent and aids in concentration and productivity. If you don’t work outdoors, it’s safe to say you might just want to lay off the keyboard for a second and start digging for the perfect plant to place in the office that will help you turn over a new leaf. Need a little help figuring out which plant to place where in your home or office? Visit Garden Supply Company and speak with one of the pros.

HOW YOU CAN HELP CLOSE THE LOOP OF FOOD WASTE For the past few years we’ve been reaping the benefits of fresh and nutritious meals as a result of the farm-to-fork movement. Now, there’s a new trend we’ve uncovered, and it’s about tine, (sorry!); the fork-back-to-farm model is helping to harness the wasted nutrients we literally throw away everyday and turn them back into healthy and delicious food. TSM spoke with Kat Nigro, Community Growth Manager of local paydirt pioneer, Compost Now, about how easy and important it is to close the loop of food waste through community composting. According to Nigro, “40% of our food is wasted and sent to already overflowing landfills,” before it is ultimately broken down into dangerous methane gas, which poisons our air. Instead, she says, with a minor change of how we manage of our compostable materials, what was once trash can become an invaluable treasure. The circular logic is simple; food waste can be carefully broken down and cultivated into nutrient rich and organic soil, which can then be used to grow more healthy food, which produces waste that can be composted once again. 64 | triangle style

Written By Audrey D. Mark

Compost Now was started in 2011 by Matt Rostetter out of frustration because, as an apartment dweller, he could not find a place to responsibly dispose of his kitchen scraps and other biodegradable household waste. Soon after partnering with co-founders Justin Senkbeil and Dominique Bischof, what started as a hobby connecting other sustainability-minded people has grown into a thriving organization with over 3000 members in nine North Carolina municipalities. The goal of Compost Now is to starve out hungry landfills by diverting as much waste as possible. To date, they’ve kept almost 3.5 million pounds away, with its members reducing almost 33% of their garbage output. Instead of irresponsibly producing problematic greenhouse gas by trashing food scraps and other natural waste, composting offers an easy way become part of the solution. Compost Now offers a variety of membership plans that each include the collection of compostable material in an air-tight and odor-free bin, which they will carefully process and exchange for organic healthy soil delivered to your door when you are ready. You can even donate your allotment to the soil bank which supports local community partner farms and gardens, if you prefer. Nigro says Compost Now “is the easiest way to compost.” With door-to-door service, there’s no need to put in the time and effort it takes to successfully build, turn and maintain a compost pile on your own. Food waste recovery has never been easier as Nigro explains, “You put it in the bin and we do the hard work.” Niro claims that 60% of our trash is compostable, so in addition to knowing that you are doing your part to help support and strengthen your community, members also enjoy the perk of having less traditional trash to take to the curb. It’s not just fruits and vegetables that can be sent to the compost bin, items such as paper towels, pizza boxes, paper plates, even wine corks, can also be turned into healthy soil. The benefits of community composting are bountiful. In addition to helping to help minimize landfill emissions, using fresh compost in your own yard and garden will help you grow more nutrient dense produce, and with potentially higher yields. Compost also helps soil retain and filter water, so you’ll put less of a drain on that valuable resource as well. “Food takes energy,” she explains, “lets make it work.”

SPOTLIGHT

KAREN PARSONS, THE HAIR AND FACE LOUNGE Mother’s Day is coming up and we wanted to find the best way to show motherly appreciation. The Hair and Face Lounge, a funky spa in Cary, rocks a retro theme that’ll teleport you back to the 1960’s. Owner Karen Parsons has designed something really unique, like a spa that features both hair styling and facial and makeup expertise, while creating a lush and relaxing environment for customers to feel at home. Her hard work and skill in the cosmetology field has truly paid off, not to mention, she’s also a mother! In adoration of all the mothers out there, we thought it would be a cool twist to have Karen’s daughter Chase interview her and learn more about what it’s like to be a successful business owner and a mother at the same time! When Triangle Style Magazine asked me to interview my mother, Karen, I couldn’t resist. As a mom, part-time traveller, and owner of The Hair and Face Lounge, she can do it all! For me, as the daughter of a hair salon owner, I’m always on call to help replace a lightbulb or fix a leak, and I have infinite access to top-notch hair styling. When asked to do the interview, I took this awesome opportunity to dive deeper into understanding what it’s like to own a salon and be a mother at the same time.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO OPEN A SALON?

I didn’t always want to open a salon, but after working in the hair industry for over 15 years I wanted to do something different, challenging, and really unique… where I could take ownership with advertising and creating an atmosphere that felt like home rather than a salon.

I needed to put the products somewhere, so I had a friend help me find a new location. If I couldn’t get into Downtown Apex, Downtown Cary was the next best option. We locked down a cute little house that we outgrew after three years, but it was a wonderful starting point. In the end I was grateful because we were meant to be in Downtown Cary all along!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF OWNING SALON?

The best part of owning a salon is getting to hire the best staff possible. Each of my employees has grown to be a close friend and like family. It also gives me freedom with my schedule. I can travel often and the salon can keeping running without me thanks to the awesome staff!

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART?

Sometimes, customers aren't happy with the

WHAT WERE SOME STRUGGLES THAT CAME outcome of their hair although I know my stylists WITH OPENING A SALON? have put forth their greatest effort… It’s hard to I had put a deposit down on a place I loved called Downtown Apex, but it fell through. When I was about to give up, I realized I had already invested so much, including a purchase order from Aveda.

please everyone, and not everybody knows what truly goes into coloring and cutting hair.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF BEING A SALON OWNER AND A MOM AT THE SAME TIME?

Owning a salon and having a daughter hasn't really been a challenge. I've always looked forward to doing your hair and makeup from prom all the way to your wedding. There were, however, two incidents that I remember. Once, when you were in middle school you wanted blue hair. When I finally did it, you hated your hair so much that everyone in the salon knew and I think it made you not trust me, even though I didn’t want your hair blue either! Not long after that, I came back from doing hair and makeup backstage at Miss America in Las Vegas. You had the nerve to ask me to take you to Ulta or Sephora so that someone could show you how to do makeup. I knew then that my opinion had lost its value to you!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM OWNING A SALON?

I’ve learned that owning a salon is actually so much fun, and that there are a lot more costs involved in owning rather than just working in one.

WHERE DID YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SALON?

My salon’s theme is sort of a retro, 1960’s vibe. I was inspired by old family photos of my parents, and I even display some of these pictures in my salon today along with other old things my grandmother saved over time. I also enjoy going to vintage stores and looking for things that speak to me.

IS THERE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME ‘THE HAIR AND FACE LOUNGE’?

I wanted to incorporate Hair and Face in the name because our focus is on hair styling along with facial and makeup services. The word Lounge was included because this is a place where people can come together, relax, and enjoy their experience. I wanted to avoid a stuffy feeling and curate a cool, retro vibe with the name.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO IS WANTING TO OPEN THEIR OWN SALON?

I would tell a salon owner to try to stand out as much as possible. One way to do this is to find one thing you are passionate about and specialize in it. When I started doing hair in Cary at Tanas Hair Designs over twenty years ago, there weren't many salons to choose from. Today, there is a specialty place for every need: Nails, massage, facial spas, eyelash extensions, waxing, and the list goes on! Salons used to do it all, but now people like going to places that specialize in what they’re looking for. Another word of advice is to align yourself with the product line that supports you and your mission. For example, Aveda is the only product line we carry because its plant-based ingredient beauty line appeals to today's earth-conscious consumer. Remember to have fun! I started my salon because I wanted to enjoy every day, and now I don't even consider my job work. I absolutely love spending time with my employees and guests in our creative environment. It's like a low-key party at the lounge every day. At the end of the day, my ultimate advice is to stay positive no matter what and make things fun! Having a mom that does it all inspires me to be the best I can while following my passions. When I worked at The Hair and Face Lounge one summer, I realized that no, I do not wish to follow in my mother's cosmetologist footsteps. Instead, pursuing a career in business ownership spring | 67

LASER HAIR REMOVAL PERMANENTLY REMOVES UNWANTED HAIR—AND YOU’LL NEVER SHAVE AGAIN. Fiction. Patie ts can achieve permanent hair reduction not permanent hair removal. You can expect between 70 and 80 percent hair reduction once you complete a series of treatments (usually 6-8). Annual follow up visits may be needed to treat regrowth and to maintain the results. However, the remaining hairs should be finer, thin, and lighter in color.

At Southern Dermatology's Skin Renewal Center, both our licensed estheticians and board certified Dermatologists provide a full range of cosmetic services, which include laser hair removal. BLONDS AND REDHEADS CANNOT BE TREATED Fiction. Blonds and redheads both are candidates for laser hair removal. They both tend to have dark hair in the areas they notice and target to be removed. It is more difficult to remove the blonde and red hairs through laser hair removal because of the lack of pigment in the hair shaft. Light and heat from the laser are att acted to darker colors, so the less pigment in a patie t's hair, the harder it is for the laser to target and remove that hair. 68 | triangle style

PEOPLE WITH DARK SKIN CANNOT HAVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL PERFORMED ON THEM. Fiction All skin types can be safely treated.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE Fiction. Call our office for pricing. You would be surprised to find that it is very affordable.

HOME LASER HAIR REMOVAL DEVICES WORK JUST AS WELL. Fiction. While not completely a gimmick, home laser hair removal devices generally use technology with less power than professional machines. Not to mention, some areas might be harder to reach like your back, shoulders, your bottom and the back of your legs.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Almost every article I read about staying young says it’s important to keep on learning. Crossword puzzles, bridge, mathematics, foreign languages are the sorts of things usually right up there on the recommended subject-list; yet if I understand this principle correctly, it’s the effort, not the subject matter, that actually counts—the same kind of effort it takes to prepare for a marathon. Not exactly perhaps but nonetheless the experts tell us persistent mental exercise means a stronger as well as a more flexible brain. I enrolled in Russian. Oh give me a break you might be thinking along about now. But wait--I signed up because my teacher was a dynamic and interesting person with lots of stories to tell. No, I most definitely did not have the slightest interest in learning a whole new alphabet nor in doing something I would

probably never master. At that stage in my life I didn’t care one little bit about increasing my neurons. But as time went by, I fell in love with the passion and the emotional density of the language. Still, there was also a practical side to having something this difficult to work on for the rest of my life and to consequently feel a growing instead of a waning sense of accomplishment. As it turned out, the work I needed to put in became a lifesaver of sorts. Whenever it was raining, I was forever waiting for an appointment in a doctor’s office, or I was stuck in an airport waiting for another plane from who knows where to replace mine, my Russian book was there too--tucked neatly inside my little black Barnes & Noble book carrier, along with the portable book holder I had bought to go with it. And quite often

I put my grammar book on the table in front of me while I was having a bite to eat, leaving my hands free for a good hot cup of coffee. It has been many years now since I first began Russian and I can tell you it has been no easy going. Learning to write the alphabet, trying to understand the grammar has been hard work. But each year that I go through my book, I do it with increasing ease. Even after all this time, though, I am not by any means a natural at the language. But I don’t care. I am simply not going to psych myself out by believing anything else than this is going to be a lifetime avocation. That so nicely let’s whatever pressure I would have otherwise given myself completely off the hook. What’s even better is that most everyone thinks it’s admirable I am attempting it at all. (I can tell by the look on their faces.) A few years ago, when I was laid up in bed and didn’t have enough energy for the kind of concentration it takes to read a novel, I tried propping up my grammar book on a tray, glanced at it for just a few pages at a time, and sometimes, sometimes not, distracted myself by watching Russian films with English subtitles and intermittently listen to my Russian tapes playing in the background. I discovered something very interesting: I felt as if I was getting somewhere without having to get up and walk around. I also learned the value of having someone else with whom to study; luckily for me, I have found a neighbor who is very particular in trying to teach me to “sound like a Russian This language has in truth become my friend and dependable companion. Whenever I pick up my book, I am so very pleased with myself-especially since high school French was not exactly high on my achievement list. But now, as time goes by, it’s not how much money I earn, the state of my wardrobe, or my appearance I am overly concerned with. Somehow, learning a second language oddly helps to center me and even better, it always makes me smile.

HEAlTHY HABITS

take your vitamins

Everyone knows that even the healthiest diet may need vitamin and mineral supplements to provide full nutritional balance. But not everyone knows how best to take these supplements so they provide maximum benefit. It's not always as simple as popping a couple of pills with your morning OJ. Here are five popular nutritional supplements and the best way to use them:

Potassium

Calcium You need sufficient calcium in your diet to ensure healthy bones, and it is especially important for growing children and those at risk for osteoporosis. Calcium is often paired with vitamin D in supplements because D helps the body absorb calcium. If you take a supplement, make sure you check whether it is calcium citrate, which can be ingested with or without food, or calcium carbonate, which relies on stomach acid created in digestion for proper absorption. Also, the body uses calcium best when it gets it in amounts of 500 mg or less, so if you are taking more than that, spread your doses throughout the day. And finally, calcium can interact with several types of prescription medicines, including antibiotics, so be sure to tell your doctor about your calcium intake before she writes your next script.

Anyone who has suffered from night leg spasms or muscle cramping during workouts knows the importance of having adequate potassium in the diet. However, potassium in pill form should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor. Its side effects can be severe, and too much potassium can be dangerous for those with heart or kidney disease. The good news is, it's possible to up your potassium intake safely through your diet: spinach, sweet potato, milk, nuts, and bananas are all considered high potassium foods.

Vitamin D

Vitamin E

Vitamin C

Vitamin D is an important contributor to healthy bones, and an adequate daily dose can help fight off a number of chronic diseases. Vitamin D as a supplement can be taken with or without food and at any time of day. However, if it's combined with calcium, as it often is, it is important to follow the more complicated recommendations for calcium supplements laid out above.

This important nutrient boosts the immune system and is thought by some to ward off cardiovascular disease and cancer. Vitamin E is water soluble, which means it's best taken at mealtime and with plenty of fluids. Vitamin E is also great for skin, hair, and nails, and many beauty products contain it. However, you never ingest vitamin E formulated for use externally.

Vitamin C is the workhorse of the nutritional supplements, helping the body ward off everything from arthritis to the common cold. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking your dosage two or three times a day and always with meals. Vitamin C is also a diuretic, so drink a full glass of water with each pill.

There is a range of supplements to choose from, so you have many opportunities to ensure you're getting the vitamins you need. However, how you take your supplements is often as important as what you take.

CLEANING HACKS FROM THE KITCHEN CUPBOARD

It seems every day a new cleaning product hits the shelves promising miraculous and instant results. Unfortunately, too often these products offer their magic for a high price--both to the consumer and to the environment. Many cleaning products use harsh and dangerous chemicals as their main ingredients. There are natural and inexpensive alternatives to these glitzy commercial products, however, and many of them are likely to be in your kitchen cupboard. HERE ARE FIVE YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY:

78 | triangle style

Phibrowsfairy_nc

Trained In Europe VINEGAR Wipe away the sticky gunk left behind by price tags and stickers with a clean rag wetted with apple cider or white vinegar. Rub gently at the gummy bits until they come off in a ball.

SALT & ICE Clean a stained coffee pot by pouring in a layer of salt followed by a handful of ice cubes. Shake the cubes around then rinse thoroughly. The ice acts to wet and agitate the salt, making it the perfect scouring solution.

BAKING SODA & VINEGAR For baked-on messes on your cookware, spread baking soda on the stain then pour vinegar (of any kind) on top. Watch it foam up as it breaks down the crud, allowing you to wipe the pan clean just minutes later.

TIN FOIL Take any scrap of tin foil, crumple it into a loose ball, and use it to scrub a dirty pan or counter. Add a drop of dish soap, and you've recreated a steel wool pad.

VEGETABLE OIL & SALT Make a paste made from vegetable oil and salt to get rid of the water rings your cups and glasses left on wooden surfaces. Rub gently with a clean, soft cloth to remove the stain for good. Chances are, there's a natural and inexpensive cleaning solution lurking in your kitchen cabinets right now. Seeking it out, rather than turning to a chemical-filled commercial product, saves time, money, and maybe even the environment.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS Do you ever feel as if picking out a movie to rent is something like wading through muddy water at midnight? That’s how it sometimes seems to me. “Oh this should be easy,” I used to think. “All I have to do is to browse through the neatly arranged aisles of my memory to find a few really good videos to recommend.” Not so simple, as it turns out. After a second viewing, some of my favorites are disappointedly crossed off my to-recommend list while others stand their ground or even surge ahead, becoming even |more interesting than they had been before. MARCH, If you’d like to see spring continue - as in The Sound of Music- then Al Gore’s fascinating documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, about global warming is a must-

see (especially if you feel this is a lot of hoopla about nothing). March also evokes (ever since Shakespeare wrote Julius Caesar) a premonition of personal betrayal. Two of several in this category are: Match Point (a brilliant thriller about a pulled-himself-up-by-the-bootstraps tennis instructor, who marries a sweet girl from a wealthy family and promptly sets about undoing his good luck by an obsession with the fiancé of his brother-in-law); Army of Shadows is an intricate and mesmerizing, brilliantly acted - Simone Signoret – film (one of the highest rated of all time) about the French Resistance in World War II APRIL (unless you’re on the receiving end) begins with laughter. Several that may inspire yours are: Best In Show (silly and lovable spoof which parodies the annual Westchester Dog Show); Waking Ned Devine (after dying from the shock of winning the lottery, Ned’s neighbors try to figure out a way to keep his winnings); Something’s Gotta Give (Jack Nickolson and Diane Keaton find dating younger people energizing and then….); Bridget Jones’s Diary (a wacky, pudgy 30something woman tries to remake her life and find love with the right man).

MAY is synonymous with Mother’s Day. Several films that might cause you to reflect upon this are: Central Station (in a train station in Brazil, a woman earns her living by composing letters for the illiterate and then doesn’t send them); Born Into Brothels (Best documentary for 2005 about a photographer who goes to India to film prostitutes and ends up by making friends with their children--a film about hope and its possibilities) The Trip to Bountiful (Geraldine Page won best actress as a high-strung woman whose frantic purpose is to visit the town of her youth in spite of her daughter-in-law’s determination to stop her.)
