KEEPING IT REAL
JUGGLING THE JENKINS, TIFFANY JENKINS FROM ROCK BOTTOM TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD
Welcome to real life. Hosted by Tiffany Jenkins – super wife, mega-mom, recovering drug addict, Internet sensation, and a flipping hilariously honest human being. Get ready for ups and downs that play out like a soap opera in front of millions! You’ll laugh, cry, and shake your head in disbelief. This one-woman show shared a few secrets with Triangle Style and we have the scoop on what it’s really like to Juggle the Jenkins. • Written By Heather Green • photos provided by Tiffany Jenkins 16 | triangle style
Can you share your personal story about being a recovering drug addict? It’s so inspiring and has likely helped thousands.
I was hardcore addicted to drugs, opiates specifically, for around ten years. Every word out of my mouth was a lie, and my moral compass was non-existent. I was breaking the hearts of everyone who knew me, and doing things for drugs I never imagined I'd do. It took spending 120 days in jail and losing everything to realize that no one was coming to save me. It's been six and a half years since I last had a drink or drug, and life is INCREDIBLE. I’m married with children and making amends to those I've hurt. I’m trying to put as much good out into the world as possible. Why did you write your book High Achiever and what was the process like?
I decided to write about the time I spent in jail for others to get an idea of what it was like. I spent 120 days in there, and saw things I'd never experienced before. I released a chapter a week on the blog and people went crazy. I decided to keep writing about rehab, the things that led up to jail, and more, because people wrote to tell me that for the first time, it felt like they were inside the head of an addict. Many people expressed that they wished they could send it to their loved one struggling in jail, or rehab, so I knew I needed to put it in book form. I googled "how to format and self publish a book," and then I did it. I sold it on my own for a year and was shocked at how well it did. Then it was picked up by Random House Harmony Books to be published!

Tell us about your "climb to fame" and the pros and cons of that road.
I’ll tell you what...I still have no idea how it happened (laughs). It started with a viral video, and once I found out that people were digging what I was doing, there was no stopping me. The pros: Getting to help people and myself, not feeling so alone. Cons: I’m in charge of important decisions and I’m a horrible decision maker!

Do moms, or other people, treat you differently since hitting the big time?
My close friends treat me the same. People I haven't talked to since third grade suddenly want to reconnect so I can help promote their businesses. It's so trippy to be recognized when I go places. I try to remind people that I'm not as cool as they think I am. You nail so many different personalities in your parodies, which one is the most difficult?
Sharon (the uppity one) is tough, simply because sometimes I get carried away and she ends up sounding like the Queen of England or Mrs. Doubtfire. What’s your personal favorite video?
One that actually didn't do well online! It’s called "Underqualified." It's about a mom who applies for a job, but is told by the male boss that she’s underqualified. Th mom demands to talk to him and shows him (via video clips) all the hats she wears as a mom, proving she’s likely more qualified than he is.
Is there a story behind the moment you realized that you might be getting famous and/or have you met anyone famous since becoming famous?
1603 N. Market Dr.,Raleigh (919) 876-8677
Tues. - Fri. 10am-6pm Sat. 10am-5pm TheBraPatch.com
I wouldn't say I'm getting famous...maybe Internet famous (laughs). When TV production companies started approaching me about having my own show I was like, "Holy crap, something is happening!" I once ran into Emilio Estevez in an elevator. I made it super-weird. Like... followed him onto the wrong floor, weird.
Are there products that you use now on a regular basis after testing them?
Nope. Ha! I try to test weird stuff like magnetic lashes, lip exercisers, and eyebrow stamps. I have yet to find anything that’s stood the test of time. Have you ever been to North Carolina? If so, what did you do and where did you go? Any NC faves?
Yes! I used to go to Asheville with a friend of mine! We stayed in a cabin and used to go to this cool thing called Sliding Rock. I'm sure you know what it is. It's like, the side of a freakin' mountain with FREEZING cold water running over it, that you slide down! I can't imagine doing it now that I'm old and fragile, but I loved it then. Any summer plans?
We’ve never taken a vacation as a family, so we’re going to try to do that. Hey! Maybe we’ll go to Sliding Rock! “Juggling the Jenkins” is such a great name and I imagine you’re certainly juggling a whole lot more these days. How are you managing?
Honestly I don't have any advice. I have no clue what I'm doing and spend most of my time running around in circles yelling, "WHERE ARE MY KEYS?!"
Can you share any mama style secrets?
Maternity pants. My youngest kid is three, and I still wear maternity pants every day. There' so much room for activities! Can’t get enough of the Jenkins family? Get more of Tiffany and the rest at jugglingthejenkins.com

Four Trending Must-Have Prints for Summer
Imagine browsing the summer lines at the Apparel Market, which is an industry trade show for boutiques. The colors are exquisite. You’re enticed by all the textures of the textiles. As you begin to make selections for your store, you find it difficult to narrow your choices down. This dilemma was posed for many apparel buyers while shopping the summer collections this season. The key is knowing your buyer, and the same is true when you find yourself in your favorite local boutique. Educating yourself about the latest trends will help you keep your wardrobe current. Staying true to your personal style and brand in the process will ensure you select pieces that will get the most wear. Several summer trends were apparent. Designers couldn’t seem to get enough of prints. There were many different motifs and color variations, but four major concepts were repeatedly showcased throughout the lines: Vertical Stripes, Leopard Print, Palm, and Floral.
Palm Print Jumper and Wooden Clutch - Glam at Galleria Boutique

Palm print is a trending classic that we’re not sure will ever go out of style! Does anything else say “tropical vacation” like this print? Maybe that’s why it’s immediately associated with resort wear. If we can’t be in Palm Beach or Maui, we can still look like we are. You could easily wear your palm print piece to your favorite local restaurant, with drink in hand, and (almost) feel just as fabulous as if you were actually poolside.

We can all agree that leopard print is no longer just for fall, but rather a year-round favorite. We saw it as a print-mixing staple throughout the holiday collections, and brand reps were claiming it would continue into summer. Designers not only incorporated the traditional leopard hues, but also tried new colorways, such as orange with cobalt, and blush with gray.

vertical stripes
Vertical Stripe Button Up, Wide Leg Raw Hem Pant, Leopard Mules - Smitten Boutique Vertical stripes are utilized in many styles ranging from nautical to boho chic. They elongate the body with a attering and slenderizing illusion. Various silhouettes were featured, such as jumpers, maxis, and tunics. 18 | triangle style 22

The ultimate spring and summer staple is still floral. While noted for its popularity in warmer seasons, this print is emerging outside of the expected. We saw it as a major fall print last year and will likely see it through prefall and into the upcoming seasons this year as well. Investing in this print will aord you continuous use of your items for seasons to come.

If you want to take attention away from your chest.... • V-Necks If you’re looking to make the chest area appear smaller, you may want to try a V-neck. They allow for a greater distance between your neck and chest, which gives the illusion of a smaller bust and, sometimes, even a longer torso. • Thicker Straps Say goodbye to thin straps (and bra strap indentations)! Thicker straps not only add extra sturdy support and easily conceal bra straps, but they also can be more flattering for a fuller chest. stay away from short sleeves that hit right at the shoulder - these styles are typically universally unflattering on everyone because the sleeves are usually too tight or are cut straight across which really can take away the feminitiy of your shoulders.

ROAD TESTED
The Great Cellulite Fight Dimples are adorable - really, they are….on your face. When it comes to anything below the neck, those dimples are on the wrong cheeks! There are countless anti-cellulite products on the market right now and just in time for swimsuit season. After weeks of researching these “top products”, I’ve narrowed it down to four dimples destroyers that ACTUALLY work!!! — Heather Green
Honeydew Coconut Cellulite Cream with Caffeine
Caffeine is the “it” ingredient in cellulite creams now. What I REALLY like about this particular product is that you can safely use it on all parts of the body (eyelids included!) I also love the smell! Nothing says summer like coconut and combined with the other natural ingredients, you can’t beat the price and results.— ($11.95 at Amazon) 34 | triangle style
Clarins Body Fit Anti-Cellulite Contouring Expert
Clarins is one of those trustworthy brands that while expensive, is almost always dependable. The results are another homerun for this on par product as the 8-targeted plant extracts visibly lift, smooth and streamline hips and thighs. Pleasant to senses and not sticky (a common side effect of the cellulite creams), I would recommend Clarins for those of you who don’t mind paying a little extra. (Available at Amazon for $41)
Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream
This perfect product had so many great reviews that it was a no-brainer. With a description like “Infused with all-powerful caffeine-rich Guaraná extract and a cocktail of Cupuaçu Butter, Açaí Oil, and Coconut Oil, this fast-absorbing cream with our addictive Pistachio and Salted Caramel fragrance will bring out your most radiant skin ever!”, I didn’t know if I should eat it or put it directly on my thighs! With over 4,000 5-star reviews and results that cannot be denied, this is a prime product to start your cellulite fight with. (From $10 at Soldejaneiro.com)
M3 Naturals Anti-Cellulite Massage Oil
My motto: “A money-back guarantee is worth a try to me!” This all-natural product is another “off the charts” rave review. The “revolutionary” ingredients actually help to break down the fat cells in the stomach, hips and legs, which was a first I had run across. The price is pretty good but it was the overall reviewer comments that sold me on M3 – my fav, “It has made my thighs less jiggly and more firm”. ($17 on Amazon)

FIND YOUR JOY...
Dear Anna, what are the alternatives to a surgical facelift. Ultimately I am looking for something with little to no downtime and natural results. Thank you, Olivia
Unfortunately, Olivia, it’s a fact of aging that, as the clock turns, our facial fat pads start shifting and our bodies naturally produce less collagen and elastin (the proteins responsible for bouncy, youthf ul skin). Luckily, though, there are a variety of treatments to achieve lifting without the downtime of your typical surgical facelift. For one, Botox and fillers can certainly provide significant refresh to fallen or sunken in features with very little downtime. For the most facelift-like improvements, though, I’d recommend exploring the revolutionary technology of InMode’s FaceTite. FaceTite uses radiof requency energy to stimulate tightening and collagen production underneath the skin while also removing unwanted fat. Around Synergy Face & Body, we like to think of it as shrink wrap for your skin! The incisions are tiny (no need f or sutures!), the procedure takes about an hour, and the swelling you might experience f rom treatment usually fades in a few days. FaceTite is the perfect minimally-invasive procedure for someone who needs a little more impact than nonsurgical modalities allow for, but who isn’t at the point of needing a f ull f acelif t. I’ve actually had the procedure myself , and the results speak f or themselves. As always, I’d recommend scheduling a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss all of your options. Best of luck! Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

Great Reads RESISTANCE WOMEN
by Jennifer Chiaverini
This poignant, previously untold story highlights a group of female spies in the resistance movement during World War II. Four women’s lives are entwined (only one of which is fictional), as one American, two Germans, and one German Jew gather intelligence to bring down the Third Reich from within. Beginning with an emotionally evocative description of the lead-up to the rise of Nazism and fascism, a unique perspective of events unfolds, offering a rare discussion of just how quickly societies can devolve, how the human spirit adapts to conflict and the loss of civil liberties, and how communities can be shamed and fearful of participating in any sort of resistance. In keeping with reality, when the Harnack resistance group is discovered, there are fatal consequences for these brave women. A detailed author’s note grounds the novel, amplifying the humanity of these women’s stories in this swiftly-moving, engaging read.
Whether traveling by plane, train, or automobile, sitting on a beach, or waiting in the doctor’s office, we all need a little escape sometimes. Here are three great books + one for the kids that will keep you entertained whenever and wherever you are. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com
THE RELUCTANT FORTUNE-TELLER
KILL THE FARM BOY
A variety of human experiences and personalities are explored in this debut novel, as a lonely and poor older man finds himself becoming the newest project of the “Club” – a group of older women lifelong friends. Reluctantly, as the title states, Norbert Z. uses his gifts to read the cards of the people who join him at a local café. In the end, no life is left untouched by his quiet observations. Another delightful story to add to the list of books about older adults enjoying a full (and often surprising, even to them) life.
Laugh-out-loud chuckle-worthy! The fantasy equivalent to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in which all fairy tale tropes are turned on their head. The Chosen One has 4 legs, not 2; the witch is surprisingly not as evil as you’re led to believe; and the romantic couple is in no way royal. But there is a quest, some magic, a band of unlikely heroes and even more unlikely friends, adventure, bravery, unforeseen deaths, and a love story with a happy ending. The best part? It’s the start of a new series, so there’s plenty more to come from this fantastically funny duo.

WHY ALCOHOL STUNTS FAT LOSS — Carrie Riggins
Refrain from drinking an hour before eating & an hour after. This allows our body to properly digest your food (and not store it as fat), before it has to go to work processing the alcohol. Switch to low-sugar alcohol & mixer options, like clear liquor (vodka, light rum and tequila) & flavored sparkling waters. My FAVE: peach vodka + Simply Clear Coconut Sparkling water. Keep wine & beer to a minimum. DO NOT minimize food intake to make room for alcohol calories. On days of drinking, consume ample amounts of lean protein to promote satiety. If not, you’re much more likely to binge on munchies during and after your drinking. Count alcohol in your daily calorie intake, like you would any other macronutrient [without obsessively tracking]. Use the below formula to take the brain work out of it OR just keep intake in moderation.
ate to break it to ya ladies, but alcohol is most def toxic to the body [shocker]. So, when it hits your tongue, your body immediately prioritizes removing these toxins over processing any other macronutrient (carb, protein or fat) that you've consumed. When this happens, anything in your system is then STORED AS FAT! Not exactly what we want.
If you're going to drink [anything is OKAY in MODERATION!], try the tips
+ tracking formula to minimize alcohol's affect on the body:

Flea Market Finds Antique fairs, thrift shops, and vintage stores are all variations on the theme, but nothing quite beats the feel of an open air market. Flea markets happen weekly all over the world, even in your own backyard (check out the Raleigh Flea Market, open Saturdays and Sundays year-round at the Historic State Fairgrounds), but some flea markets are so special that they occur only a few times a year. Travel guides often list these as major events of interest. Make plans accordingly, and don’t forget to factor in the shipping cost of whatever you’ve purchased. Choose your “carry method” wisely. Is it a
What do Pyrex patterns, picture frames, and picnic baskets have in common? They’re just a few of the treasures you can find at flea markets, the place to shop for items that are a combination of unique and affordable, all wrapped up in the thrill of the hunt. backpack? A basket? A little red wagon or other type of rolling cart? Is it your spouse, who will run your purchases back-and-forth to the car (if yes to this one, you’ve got a real keeper!)? For larger furniture buys, most vendors will hold the sold piece for you to pick up later in the day, but for all those smaller items, you need some way to transport them around the market while you continue to shop. Figure Out Your Funds Your budget and your vehicle size are going to have the big impacts on what you’re able to bring home. If you’re buying furniture, arrive in something with some cargo space. Set the overall budget for yourself, and divide it into three: big ticket items (furniture), collection pieces (if you have a certain item in mind), and impulse buys (for when you fall in love with that thing you didn’t know you needed).
Family Fun If you’re shopping with the kiddos, giving them their own budget of $5-$10 will not only occupy them and stop them from asking you for ev-er-ything, but will introduce the thrill of starting their own collections while teach them math skills and financial responsibility. Also, don’t be afraid to use their cute little faces as a bargaining tool when haggling over something you really want! You just might find a vendor that’s a real softie when a child asks for a discount. Make sure to pack bottled water, snacks, tissues, and hand sanitizer, especially if you’ve got those little ones with you.

Finding the Time Are you the early bird who gets the worm? While flea markets are often open by 8 am (and usually have free entry), some may open before dawn with an early bird ticket. You’ll get the best pick of everything, though be prepared to pay a little bit more for the cream of the crop. On the other hand, if you’re going just to have a good time, stopping by the last day or last few hours could result in the best deals as merchants may not want to go home with the stock they have left. Don’t let the rain keep you away! Grab a raincoat and umbrella, and enjoy shopping without the crowds. Use the rain as an excuse to whittle those prices down; vendors should be happy for the sale in those conditions. Make sure to wear appropriate shoes for the weather and walking conditions, too. Finagling the Price You’ll want to have cash on hand in different denominations, and spread it out in different pockets, so that if you say to someone, “All I have left is a $5” as part of your haggling technique, you don’t then pull out a wad of $20s for them to give change. If you’re looking for specific pieces, bring a list of the items and what they’re selling for online so you don’t pay more than fair market value for them. You can always use your cell phone to double-check a comparable price online, but just remember it’s considered gauche to do that actually in front of a vendor. Lastly, when it comes to haggling, the nicer you are, the better it will go. Vendors want to know you love their items as much as they do! Smile wide, tell them how you’re planning to use it, ask what their bottom price might be, and counter with what your top price would be. Everyone goes home happy.

I found this beautiful oil painting hanging in the back. I was immediately drawn to its rich colors and texture. The price was $24 and there was no question that it was going home with me! — Laurel Bautista
I was walking down the fairway at the Raleigh Flea Market when I saw this painting from a distance. The closer I got, the more excited I became. I got even luckier when I scored it for only $20! I carried it all the way back to my car smiling. It’s still one of my all time favorite finds and I have bought many more paintings since. —Leigh Ann Scott
One of my favorite retro pieces in my salon comes straight from my paternal grandmothers attic. When my mom and dad were dating in the late 60’s, my dad would joke that this picture was a portrait of my mom. Before my dad passed away in 2017, he was flabbergasted by how much I would pay for my flea market finds compared to their original costs. I’m happy to have some cool finds from their basement and groovy stories from the 60’s. — Karen Parsons,

I picked this up on Mother’s Day. At first, I walked away but I kept thinking about it, so I went back. I dont know if it’s old or just a knock-off, but I bought it because my best friend says “AND...” a lot, and it reminded me of her. — Erica Parsons Butler 54 | triangle style
I was willing to buy it even if it was broken. That’s how much l loved this vintage fan. It was love at first sight inside an antique store in Northern New Jersey. When the shop owner plugged it in and it slowly revved up to a steady, quiet hum, I knew it was coming home with me. It’s been almost 20 years since I bought this Signal 1937 550 fan. They just don’t make them like this anymore. And that’s exactly why I love it. Still works! — Stephanie Finucane, The Right Space

1. ART HUNG TOO HIGH Art should generally be hung at eye level which is around 57 to 60 inches on average. This provides the optimal height for viewing and enjoyment of the art. There are exceptions, of course, when you have really tall ceilings or when hanging art over a headboard.
7 No Cost Decorating Tricks You can attack these decorating tricks today with basic household tools and a little time. Re-examine your existing decor for a new, improved decorating scheme. Think of it as retooling what you already have while correcting some common mistakes.

2. CURTAIN HARDWARE HUNG TOO LOW All too often we see the opposite problem to artwork hung too high with curtain rods hung too low. You want your ceiling height to feel maximized, therefore hang the curtain rod as high as possible. In the living room above, we hung the curtain rods just below the crown molding. 56 | triangle style
3. TOO MUCH STUFF It’s not a bad idea to revisit or edit your decor every so often. Maybe three carefully chosen family photos on a side table looks better than ten crammed on top. First of all, remove your small, decorative items and put them in one area. While going through this process, decide which items are the most meaningful and which decor you can let go. Finally, place the remaining items in fresh groupings with like items together creating new displays. 4. TOO BRIGHT LIGHTING “Where were you on the night of July 6th, Mrs. F&F?” You don’t want to feel like you’re in a jail house examination room. Swap out ceiling and lamp bulbs for an immediate difference. Aside from task lighting, there needs to be a variety and quantity of lower wattage bulbs to light up a room. This especially rings true after a certain age, ahem.

5. PAIRS OF EVERYTHING Odd numbers work in decorating for a reason. Not to say that there isn’t a time and place for pairs, but a “Noah’s Ark” approach to everything is boring. Take a pair of candlesticks and split them up. Fluff your couch with three mismatched pillows. Why not display “fraternal twins” or things that look similar but aren’t an exact match?

6. SAME SCALE FOR EVERYTHING Aim for furniture with varying heights and scale. If your living area has a lamp on one side of the room, maybe a tall floor lamp adds interest to the other side. If the couch is large, then visually smaller accent chairs provide a break, like the chairs with open arms above.
7. FURNITURE ON THE DIAGONAL Don’t fall for certain home stager decorating tricks. Professionals generally stage this way to make things interesting or to distract from some really awful feature. A couple of chairs angled across from a sofa is fine but a whole room of diagonal furniture makes me dizzy.

TEN GENIUS
FOOD HACKS
Everybody has the occasional kitchen disaster, from seriously bad breath to soggy lettuce to dangerously dirty appliances. These 10 genius food hacks will solve those problems, and seven others, and leave you wondering, "Why didn't I think of that?" Give them a try today -- you'll be amazed by how quick, easy and convenient these simple food hacks can be. — Anna Lutz
Turn forgotten nacho toppings into a taco. Everyone loves nachos, but nobody likes scraping the baked-on cheese off the baking dish they used to cook their nachos. Save your cookware, and your favorite toppings, by laying a large flat tortilla on the baking sheet before you add the nachos and your toppings. The tortilla will catch any cheese, meat or vegetables that fall off the nachos, turning them into an instant taco. Keep your coffee hotter, longer. Whether you prefer to drink coffee from a regular mug or an insulated coffee thermos, there's one simple trick that will keep your drink steaming hot until the last drop. While you're brewing your coffee, boil your electric kettle and pour the boiling water into your mug or thermos. When your coffee is ready, dump the water out and quickly pour the coffee in. The vessel will retain the heat from the water, and your drink will stay hot for much longer than before.

know they weren't straight from the oven! You can also freeze whole cakes by wrapping them first in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. When you're ready to eat the cake, you can thaw it overnight in the fridge, then unwrap it and bring it to room temperature an hour or two before serving. Open the most resistant jar in seconds. Don't break your wrists trying to open that jar of pasta sauce. Slip on a pair of yellow rubber kitchen gloves (even one will do), and you'll get the grip that you need right away. If you don't have any gloves, you can get a similar effect by wrapping an elastic band around the lid. Heat your food evenly in the microwave. Is there anything worse than taking a bowl of pasta or plate of vegetables out of the microwave, only to find some parts are scalding while others are still freezing? Heat your food through evenly the first time by putting it on the plate in the shape of a ring with a hole in the middle. This arrangement eliminates the center, which is usually the part that doesn't get heated thoroughly. Use this hassle-free method to clean your blender. Raise your hand if you've ever cut your finger on the blades of your blender while you've been trying to clean it. There's an easier way to clean this essential kitchen tool. Immediately after pouring out the food you want to eat, fill the blender with warm soapy water, put the lid back on and give it a whirl. That will clean the bowl and the blades while keeping your fingers safe. Avoid using hot water as too much pressure will build up and you may end up with a soapy explosion all over your kitchen! Never forget your lunch again. We've all been there. Sitting on the subway, merging onto the highway or just walking into the office and realizing that lunch is still in the refrigerator back home. If you're a chronic lunch forgetter, try this easy trick. After dinner, when you put tomorrow's lunch into the fridge, put your keys in too! Place them right on top of your lunch bag, and it will be virtually impossible to leave the house without your midday meal.

Just two years old when her father died, my grandmother and her nine older siblings moved out of their lovely home in town and into a smaller house on a hardscrabble farm in the country and learned how to “make do.” Although this making do was the life Gramma grew up with—seeing her mother and older brothers work all day every day to raise enough f ood f or the f amily to survive—she also grew up with stories about her family’s former life and trips to her father’s great monument whenever her mother took her along to the cemetery to pay her respects. Her f ather had been a well-known town official, so admired that most of the businesses closed their doors the af ternoon of his f uneral; nonetheless he had saved little money, had no insurance, and left a mortgage for his family to pay off.
This was a lesson Gramma did not forget. With a mixture of pride in her father’s achievements and empathy f or her mother’s still f ragile and gentle beauty, she had her eye on achieving an easier life. She put herself through school, worked her way up to stenographer for the county’s district judge, saved most of her salary, and married a well-respected builder who moved her into a pretty stone cottage on one of the best streets in town. Then along came the Great Depression. Remembering her own family’s struggle, Gramma refused to f oreclose on any of the mortgages she partly owned and instead stayed behind to take care of her children, while her husband took the train to British Columbia to work in a lumber mill and send money back home. Like everything else that came Gramma’s way, she gritted her teeth and forged straight ahead. She became an advocate of thrift and a great believer in inexpensive ways to entertain oneself. Those who felt otherwise, she considered self -indulgent, or worse, bereft of imagination. The lives of her children, my summer vacations, and her own life as well, were guided with this philosophy in mind. She unraveled outgrown sweaters, using the yarn from one to make edgings and collars for the other;
she took the deep red velvet from an old coat, making my mother a stunning ice- skating outfit with its own muff and hat. She packed up heavy glass containers of f ood she had canned from her garden and took them to the poor. Whenever anyone felt awkward, she said, “You would do the same for me if I needed it wouldn’t you?”. And she was fun. She believed in hikes, rides on bicycles, swim lessons in the park, free concerts on Sunday night listening to the rousing music of a John Philip Sousa march or bagpipes played by men wearing Scottish kilts. She also believed in the value of fresh air, as we huddled on a blanket at the top of a steep hill, near the totem pole, overlooking the lake, watching free movies-usually something really boring but instructive: such as a Red Cross safety film or something or other about wheat growing in Alberta. (An intelligent, practical woman, she must have known children needed to feel they were getting away with something, like staying out late in the dark with their friends.)

She was also a great believer in the value of stories. Every Wednesday afternoon she put on her blue and white silk dress, a round white hat, gloves and pretty high heels and went to the library. On the way home, she told her own stories. “That’s your mother’s f irst grade teacher’s house. Her son died in the War and she never got over it and hasn’t left her f ront porch since. That’s old man McKutchen’s Grocery Store. He talks your head off but he delivers so I put up with him. See that big house on the corner? The people who owned it died f rom the inf luenza and it has been standing vacant ever since—I’m told their breakfast dishes are still out; I guess they didn’t have time to put them away before they went upstairs and died.” She had a unique but interesting way of looking at life and would have felt puzzled why anyone should feel anything but gratitude for the life they still had. She never complained about anything—except perhaps my grandfather; she wasn’t perfect—but she certainly was no martyr either. She simply was a happy person who made others happy as well. I call that aging gracefully. How about you?

CONTACT DERMATITIS AND SKIN PATCH TESTING
The long days and warm nights of summer have finally arrived. As you enjoy the fun and joy of concerts under the stars, taking kids to camp, and passing time at the lake, keep in mind your time outdoors can bring an uninvited rash. The dermatologists at Southern Dermatology and Skin Renewal Center in Raleigh report an increase in calls and office visits when the weather warms up because there are many more opportunities for your skin to make contact with vegetation that can cause contact dermatitis. Lightly brushing up against plants such as Poison Sumac, Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Stinging Nettle, and Wood Nettle can cause skin irritation; with symptoms such as a burning sensation, redness, inflammation, hives, bumps, blisters, and itching.
68 | triangle style 74
Many substances found indoors can also trigger reactions consistent with contact dermatitis, including hair products, cosmetics, jewelry, laundry detergent, latex rubber, solvents, airborne substances, fertilizers, pesticides, and perfumes. Often, a doctor can identify the cause of dermatitis by evaluating your symptoms and learning about your recent activity. Other times, when the rash develops more mysteriously, skin patch testing may be necessary. Simply put, contact dermatitis is a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance that triggers an allergic reaction to the skin (contact dermatitis). The response can develop in a matter of minutes or a few hours after contact with the substance and can last between
two and four weeks. Contact dermatitis is not contagious or life-threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable. Often, contact dermatitis can be treated at home. However, you should contact a dermatologist or doctor if there is significant pain that is disturbing your daily routine or disrupting sleep, if it is widespread, does not get better within two to four weeks, becomes infected, is in your eyes, nasal passages, face or genitals, or if the rash has damaged the mucus lining of the mouth and digestive tract. You may need a skin patch test to determine the cause of the contact dermatitis when the allergen is unknown. During a patch test, small amounts of potential allergens are applied via adhesive patches, on your skin. A patch test does not require the use of any needles or injections and is not the same as a skin prick test. Skin patch testing is a relatively simple procedure that can test up to 200 allergens, in some instances. A dermatologist will review a patient's medications and advise how best to prepare for the test, including avoiding sun exposure for up to a week before the test. The test allergens will remain on the skin (usually the back) for approximately two days, during which time, the area should stay dry by avoiding showers and excessive sweating. After two days the panels are removed and the skin reactions are measured. The patient will return, one or two days after the panels are removed so the doctor can rate the reaction, on a scale from “negative” to “extreme.” Some extreme reactions may include blisters or ulcers in the tested area, which will be treated immediately. Depending on the results of your patch test, a dermatologist may recommend either a skin prick test and/or a blood test to identify any possible allergens further.

TSM’S LITTLE BIRDIE | AROUND TOWN TUNED IN: THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL Community Music School was founded in 1994 and serves economically disadvantaged students through private music instruction. To enroll, students must be eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program and be between the ages of 8 and 18. Interested families learn about the program through the website as well as from printed postcards.
Enrolled students pay a weekly tuition of just $1 and the instruments are provided, f ree of charge, for their lessons. CMS’s teaching staff, composed entirely of professional musicians, provides personalized music lessons tailored to each student’s individual needs and level of ability. Performance opportunities, workshops, and an abundance of online music education materials supplement the students’ CMS experience. Lessons currently take place at 618 Tucker Street in Raleigh, though plans to utilize a more suitable facility are in the works.
On Wednesday, March 6th, a fundraiser was held at the Governor’s Mansion to benefit the Community Music School of Raleigh (CMS). Some of the Triangle’s most generous benefactors gathered to contribute to this incredible cause and enjoy some food, drinks, and fellowship. Entertainment was provided by Tony Award-nominated actor, Alan Campbell, who was there with his accompanist to serenade the crowd with a litany of tunes from days gone by. In addition, one of CMS’s young students, named Gabriel, impressed the crowd with the violin-playing skills he’s learned through the organization. Also, the state’s First Lady, Kristin Cooper, spoke briefly to the attendees about the importance of music education.
For the past four years, the high school graduation rate for enrolled seniors in the CMS program was 100%. Many students go on to college, with the majority studying music performance or music education. CMS is currently headed up by Executive Director, Dennis de Jong, a professional trumpet player turned music educator. Because 98% of the operation budget is f unded with grants and contributions, de Jong encourages interested would-be donors to call to get involved, whether financially, as a board member, or otherwise. WWW.CMSRALEIGH.ORG 919.832.0900 CMS is funded in part by the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission; and supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, as well as the NC Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural Resources.

The Bull City Rumble is a world-renowned vintage motorcycle and scooter rally hosted by Ton Up NC annually on Labor Day Weekend in Durham, NC. WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS (A CLASSIC ALFRED HITCHCOCK THRILLER) ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S "THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH" Traveling on a bus to Marrakech with their son Hank, American tourists Dr. Ben McKenna (James Stewart) and his wife Jo (the late Doris Day) strike up a conversation with a rather affable Frenchman, who asks Dr. McKenna a lot of personal questions. Something about it doesn't seem quite right.
Inspiring Confidence through Quality Womenswear
Making their way through the crowded picturesque Marrakech market square the next day, the McKennas see a man stumbling out of an alleyway. A knif e embedded in his back - jig sawing through the dense crowd toward them, is the Frenchman they met on the bus, now dressed as an Arab. Pressing a note into Dr. McKenna's hand, he gasps that the Ambassador is to be assassinated in London's Royal Albert Hall the following day. "You must stop it." After giving a statement at police headquarters, the exhausted McKennas head straight to the room of an English couple who were keeping an eye on Hank. However, they've checked out of the hotel, gone back to London, and taken Hank with them. The McKennas immediately follow.

Frantically entangling themselves in international intrigue, searching for Hank and trying to prevent an assassination, their hearts thumping, the McKennas find themselves standing behind a curtain during a symphony at London's Royal Albert Hall. And later, during a diplomatic reception at the embassy, Jo McKenna sings at a f ever pitch, almost a scream, while, at the same time, Dr. McKenna tries to find Hank, desperately running along corridors, up and down sets of stairs - all leading to a chilling end. (COMPELLING, COMPLEX AND ADDICTIVE) THE GOOD WIFE: Standing beside her husband, the State Attorney, as he resigns following the discovery of his affair with a prostitute is Alicia - embarrassed, heartbroken, insulted. To be a good wife to him, to stay at home and raise his children and enjoy doing every minute of it, to stand in the background, supporting him in his career, while giving up her own as an attorney is just too much. But Alicia is a survivor. And watching her survive is amazing.
