I went to Root Elementary, then I went to Daniels Middle School, and after that we moved to Greensboro where I went to high school and then we came back here and I went to St. Mary’s for a couple of years. I received my degree in journalism at the University of Colorado because I loved the mountains and I thought, “Doesn’t that sound like fun?” And it was! I ended up getting my first job in TV after doing some internships in Denver and at WGHP in High Point. But, I found that I just wasn’t really wild about doing the news, there was just too much bad news that we had to talk about. I actually had a friend who did weather on the weekends, and thought to myself, “You know, that looks like it might be right up my alley.” So I went back to school and studied meteorology, and got a job in Wilmington doing weather. I went to Spokane, Washington, and came back here to WRAL, and I’ve been here for quite some time!

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF I’m actually from Raleigh, which I know is a bit unusual these days. Raleigh has grown so much since I was born here. There was really nothing outside of the beltline during that time. It’s changed a lot and for the better! It’s really wonderful to see downtown Raleigh just explodingit’s such a fun place to be.

I have a husband and a son who will be 10 in May and a daughter who is 12. I love this age because they’re so much fun! They can do everything we love to do - they can kayak, they can mountain bike, they can snowboard, they can hike, camp – it’s just a ton of fun. I guess that I have to admit that I am a soccer mom - I drive a lot of soccer carpool but love that, as well. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP? WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOUR LOVE FOR THE WEATHER? I guess the first thing that I wanted to be growing up was an orthodontist. My teeth were hideous, stuck out in the front like a beaver, and I started going to the orthodontist when I was seven years old. My orthodontist was a really nice guy and my mom told me, “You know, your orthodontist makes a lot of money, and he’s off every Friday.” I said, “Yes! That’s me. I want to be an orthodontist.”

Then I decided I wanted to be a vet. I fell in love with dogs and cats and horses and all of that. But, growing up, I didn’t feel like I was very strong at math, so that’s why I decided, “Ehhh, maybe I can’t be a scientist. Maybe I just need to be a journalist.” And it wasn’t until I got out of college that I really had the confidence to kind of take on the math and the science and say, “I can do this.” And I found that I really enjoyed it. It’s funny looking back. Those were the first things I wanted to do - be a scientist and I’ve always loved the weather. My dad and I used to sit out on our screen porch and watch thunderstorms roll through. And, of course, once I went to school I realized that was a terrible idea. You should never do that! Very, very, VERY unsafe. But I enjoyed the power of the storms. Now that I’m doing mornings, I am in the studio more, but when I first started at WRAL, I was doing weekends and they would let me cover hurricanes. It was amazing just to stand out there and feel the power of a storm. It’s exciting stuff. And what I love about it now are just the intricacies of a forecast. I find Winter storms are really the toughest to forecast. I like forecasting hurricanes but you don’t ever want them to make landfall, they’re rare -- and very interesting to watch. Again, forecasts for those are very intricate. Tornadoes are not my favorite because they happen so quickly that you can’t really plan for them very well. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? ANY FAVORITE LOCAL SHOPS? I have my work dresses and they’re all somewhat similar. For TV, we can’t wear prints, only solid colors. I tend to like something that’s a little bit of a fit and flare. You ladies know what I’m talking about! (laughs) Honestly, I like Lauren, Ralph Lauren. Those dresses are really flattering, and I actually buy them at Belk’s. When I’m not working, I don’t have good sort of “in-between” clothes but more “go-outsideand-play” clothes. So, I buy a lot of those at Great Outdoor Provisions or at REI, that sort of thing. Those are probably my favorite local “play clothes” shops.
CAN YOU SHARE ANY BEAUTY SECRETS YOU HAVE FOR LOOKING SO GREAT ON THE AIR? I don’t have any! I am not one that you really want to ask about beauty secrets! I get up so early, and we’re on TV so early. We start at 4:30 and we have to record a set of things – it goes online, and it goes to our TV station that we own in Wilmington. That all starts at about 4:15, and I like to sleep until the very last minute, so I throw on my makeup really fast in sort of some half-light in the weather center. (laughs) HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY ON-AIR BLOOPERS? You know, there are little bloopers that happen all the time on the air – a lot of those that we try to cover up. I mean, anybody who’s ever worked with a computer – which is everybody – knows that every once in a while they freeze up, they crash, and you just kind of have to figure out how to handle that. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN WEATHER HERE IN NC? That’s an easy one. The first hurricane that I ever covered was in Morehead City, and it was Hurricane Bonnie in 1998. I’ll always remember that. People from the station, who had covered hurricanes before said, “You’ll lose power and you won’t have anything to eat.” But the station will send you with this big Rubbermaid bin of non-perishable foods — a can of tuna, cheese and crackers, anything that doesn’t spoil. And once the power goes out in your hotel, that’s what you have to eat. We were doing fine and the storm had started to pick up in strength during the day, and sure enough, the hotel lost power at about midnight, just as we were going off the air. About the time that the power went out, the metal shingles on the roof started to pull away. The roof wasn’t really coming off, it was just the outer shingles, but it was still pretty scary! My photographer and I and the rest of the folks that were covering the hurricane went inside the lobby and just kind of sat. Nobody wanted to go to their room. Our rooms were already

dripping with water. We sat there for about two hours before we felt comfortable going upstairs and going to bed. Thankfully, the storm didn’t get any worse but that’s one I will never forget! WHAT ARE YOUR DAYS LIKE? (FOR US MOMS, WE CAN'T IMAGINE THE HOURS YOU HAVE!) Well, they’re certainly unusual! My alarm goes off at about 2:30. I hit snooze once or twice, and I try to hop out of bed by 2:45, 2:50 at the latest. I try to get to work at about 3:30 ambut that’s really late. Fortunately I have meteorologist Mike Moss here with me in the morning and we work as a team. There’s a lot of radio that we have to do, and he mostly takes the radio duties, and I do the TV duties, but we work together in the morning which is extremely helpful. We do all of our own forecasting and we build all of our own graphics, so there’s a lot to do to get on the air, and I’m still probably building graphics and doing some forecasting up until about 6 a.m.

Not that you’re missing anything if you’re watching starting at 4:30, but I just continue to change things up and tweak things as we go through the morning. We’re off the air at 9 and I have a meeting that I go to til 9:30. I’ll catch up with email, we’ll have promo shoots and I go to school talks and talk to kids about weather and then by 11 o’clock, I try to get back here to the station and start working on the new news cast. Then there’s more radio to do, another set of forecasts for the web and for Wilmington, and then our newscast starts at noon and we’re done at 1:00. I usually am here til 1:30. So, it’s easily a 10-hour day or longer every day! I get home just in time to start shuttling the kids around to soccer practice and their practices are later than ever these days, so it’s hard for me to get to bed on time. In a perfect world, I would be asleep at 8, but these days, it’s closer to 9. When the alarm goes off at 2:30, it is not a lot of sleep. I dream of taking naps, but it’s hard to fit those in, too.
CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT BEING A METEOROLOGIST? Gosh, I’m so close to it that I’m not sure what people don’t know. I don’t know if people know that we are all meteorologists here at WRAL. We do all of our own forecasting. I
think, sometimes people think that we have somebody that comes in behind the scenes and does that for us, and that’s not true. It’s our responsibility here and that’s true for all the TV stations. When you’re forecasting, it’s not that you’re adding, it’s not that you’re doing a math problem to figure out what’s

happening with the weather. It’s much more subjective than that. You’re looking at a lot of equations that have been run by super computers, and there are a lot of different ones. It’s taking a lot of information and putting it together more like a puzzle. IF YOU WERE NOT A METEOROLOGIST, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I’ve always been interested in the medical field, but really, my heart lies outdoors. I would be a kayak instructor or I would be a snowboard instructor. I would do something that keeps me outside all the time if I were not a meteorologist. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WEATHER? FAVORITE PLACE TO VACATION IN NC? I love snow storms and Winter weather is so much fun to forecast. I love the intricacies of forecasting winter weather in our area — it’s so much fun to watch that unfold. So, Winter weather is definitely my favorite!

I’m a mountain girl. I like mountain biking and white-water kayaking and I like running around in the woods! I love the beach, too, but my favorite place would be the mountains. WHAT IS COMING UP FOR YOU THIS YEAR? Lots of work! (laughs) We are a little shortstaffed in the weather center right now, so we’re hoping to have a new member of the weather center on board in the next few months.

I am looking forward to some fun vacations! We went skiing out West this past winter, and we’re going to Maine this summer, and I’m excited about that. I’ve been out West a bunch, but I’ve never spent much time in the northeast. We’re going try to go to Mount Washington, of course, which is famous for its weather. There’s a big weather station up there, so I’m excited about that! •••

Everything’s Coming Up Roses
From visually striking prints to blooming florals, this season’s fashion trends are all about making a jaw-dropping impact. Triangle Style takes you through some of Fall’s biggest trends.
Just because summer is coming to a close, doesn’t mean you can’t still dream of blooming flowers this fall -and we have this season’s trends to thank for that. Straight off the runway from the likes of iconic fashion names Gucci and Christian Dior, floral pieces will be making a bold statement once again. Our favorite rendition of the trend? Floral anklelength dresses paired with a black faux leather jacket for a downtown chic vibe.

Modern Prints Charming
PSA: the streets of London are hitting the US this season, thanks to designers like Givenchy and Balenciaga. From herringbone to houndstooth to plaid, expect to see these striking prints sported everywhere for a classic twist on your average coats and jackets. There’s just something about these prints that lend an air of cool sophistication and we have a feeling our local fashionistas will agree.

Go Big Or Go Home
Inspired by menswear silhouettes, this season’s outerwear is getting a big makeover. This functional staple highlights clean and straight lines, while offering an oversized, cocoon-like fit that’s both cozy and chic. Available in a variety of lengths, you can style this trend with a pair of edgy leather booties or heels for a touch of femininity.

Black Leather... Everything
Full steam ahead: maxed out black leather is a heavy hitter in this season’s trends, thanks to designers like Marc Jacobs and Saint Laurent. You’ll see this trend introduced with bold shouldered silhouettes and in captivating power suit form. If you’re not ready to commit to the high impact trend, start small with a black leather or faux leather statement piece, like knee high boots or a jacket.

you can’t wear white after Labor Day wasn’t ready for one of this season’s hottest trends: white from head to toe. Sported at this year’s fashion week by Valentino and Jil Sander, you can achieve this look yourself by dressing monochromatically with crisp white and clean lines, which provide a lengthy silhouette that’s both classic and minimal. Keeping with the style, try accessorizing with dainty, subtle jewelry or going bold with a colorful handbag or jewelry. fall | 23

Jeans are a staple in most women’s wardrobes, but when it comes to finding a great pair of jeans, knowing where to start can be a bit confusing. After all, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of jeans manufacturers. What works on your friends, your sister or your daughter may not work for you at all. So how can you find your perfect pair without tearing your hair out? Follow these 5 steps and you’ll discover how easy gettin the perfect pair of jeans can be.

Assess: Take Note Of Your Shape Are you a little curvy, or a lot curvy? Do you have long legs? Are you peti e? Do you have a little extra around the middle? Without any judgment, taking note of your shape will help you to understand exactly what your needs are, helping you to know where to start. Note: Many brands have a wide array of styles designed for different needs. With everything from builtin tummy control panels, bu -lifting inserts, different rises and innovative fabrics that can make you look (and feel) pounds thinner, it’s pretty certain there is a solution for your needs.
FALL STYLE
HAND-SELECTING OUR INVENTORY
MEANS WE BRING OUR CUSTOMERS A LITTLE SHIMMER AND SPARKLE, A LOT OF TEXTURE AND PRETTY PRINTS.
We are sure to have a little something for everyone — no matter their age, shape, or size.
Do Your Homework No, it may not be the fun part, but taking time to do a little research will help you eliminate those brands and styles that are not right, and zero in on the pair that will fit you like a glove. Ask friends who have a similar shape as you for recommendations. Get online. Take a social media poll. Become familiar with brands and styles and the differences in how they fit. Whatever it takes to find what you need! Note: Go online before you shop. There are resources designed to help you find brands, cuts and styles that are right for you. But don’t stop there. Full-service boutique can be your best asset, with personal shoppers and stylists dedicated to helping you get the right cut and the right size.
Getting The Right Fit These days jeans are not an inexpensive purchase, and you want to be sure to get your money’s worth. You will not wear an uncomfortable pair of jeans for long, so don’t even think about tolerating something that is so-so. Go for amazing! No gapping at the waist, riding up in the rise or bagginess in the thighs. If your skinny jean is too tig t in the calf, skip it. Keep trying on unti you get it right. If you come close to perfect but need a little help, a great tailor can work wonders. And by all means, don’t buy a pair that gives you a muffin top! Find a rise that is slimming and keeps everything in place.

Knowing Your Silhouette
WE LOVE OUR BLACK DENIM!
Knowing what silhouette is right for you is essential Your goal is to create balance and the truth is one style does not fit all. Just because a particular style is trendy does NOT mean it’s right for you. Don’t be afraid to try new styles, however, if it’s not right don’t give in.
THE PERFECT PAIRING WITH LEOPARD.
Skinny jeans have been the most popular choice, but are not always right for everyone. If you want to wear skinny jeans but are a bit curvy, wear a longer top or jacket that comes below hips, or wear your skinny jeans with boots to create balance. If you’re fuller through the hips and/or the bust, a bootcut will be a better style to balance you out. Trouser jeans can work well on many body types. Steer clear of full-on flares if you’re above a ‘certain age’ as they are better for the younger set.

If you’re fuller through the booty, keep your pockets plain and simple. If you’d like to amp up that area, choose pockets with embellishments to make you appear fuller. Choose back pockets that are in proportion with your bum for best effect.
The Style
The style of your jeans makes a statement, so be clear they are right for you. If you’re buying a great pair of go-to investment jeans, opt for a dark wash classic cut that will last you for years to come. Once you have those in your wardrobe, you have room to play around with trendier styles, including distressing, different washes, decorati e sti ching or embellishments. With everything from pull-on to textured and distressed denim, anything goes. Just make sure the look is in line with your own personal style. There you have it. The perfect pair of jeans in 5 easy steps. While it may not feel so easy when you’re in the fittin room, taking the time to go through each of these steps can help ensure that you get the right pair of jeans. And once you do, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. •••

ROAD TESTED | REVIEWS Native Pumpkin Spice Latte Deodorant I’ve actually been using the coconut vanilla version of this deodorant for years and LOVE it! It is safe and a little on the pricey side at $12 a stick but totally worth it. The pumpkin spice is subtle and sweet, so you won’t walk around smelling like there is a pumpkin pie in your purse! Another plus, you really don’t need to wear perfume with this deodorant – so you actually SAVE money in the long run! (Available at Nativecos.com)
Pumpkin Spice And Everything Nice! Can you HEAR the leaves crunching yet?!? That’s right summer, it’s time to pack your 90degree bags and hit the road! Fall is here and we all know what that means: Pumpkin Spice, baby. I’ve had the lattes, I’ve enjoyed the candles, I’ve made the bread but Pumpkin Spice beauty products are new to me! And boy, oh boy did I find some A-MAZING ones!!! Here’s my musthave list of Pumpkin Spice beauty finds that will not break the bank – and you know, Christmas is right around the corner!!! — Heather Green
Pumpkin Pie Chapstick
If you like cherry chapstick, you’ll love Pumpkin Pie! I was skeptical of Chapstick’s interpretation of the seasonal fav, but they nailed it. It truly feels like you are wearing a little leftover latte on your lips! Only downside, like all other Chapstick flavors, there is the typical “waxy” feel and it doesn’t last as long as you’d like. But at around 99 cents, you can’t beat this spicy deal. (Available at all major drug stores)

Moisturizing, affordable and smell-icious! You will literally wake up feeling like it’s fall! Not a strong fragrance, but light and it really softens skin. Claim: “gel-type moisturizer absorbs quickly to make a dramatic difference by morning” and it took a few nights, but I could tell a difference. Works for all skin types (I didn’t break out and I have pretty sensitive skin), I can see myself using this year round!

Pumpkin Spice --Autumn Body Glow Sample
Pumpkin Spice captures the essences of Autumn. A swirl of vanilla, drizzles of sugar maple syrup, warm spices and hazelnut. The scent evokes the spirit of fall, filled with hay rides, mugs of hot tea, cozying up to a crackling bonfire wrapped up in warm blankets and the rustic palette of nature with crisp, falling leaves. At $5 to try, need I say more?

Giorgio Armani Beauty Eye Tint in Sunrise
So it doesn’t smell like Pumpkin Spice, but it couldn’t look more like fall! Yes, it is about $35-40 but, it’s the holidays and this is one of those “WOW! I didn’t know I needed that!” products. I’m generally not a fan of orange, but this is a bronzy tone that really flatters most skin tones. If you’re feeling generous, I say “treat yourself”! (Available at Sephora)

BEAUTY PICKS | RED LIPSTICKS Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Luminous Modern-Matte Lipstick in ‘Red Carpet Red’ FAIR - Because fair skin typically exudes a light flush of pink, the best reds for this complexion are cooltoned with blueish or purpleish undertones to keep redness at a minimum. — Nordstrom.com
Picking The Best Red Lipstick For You
There’s just something about a red lipstick that can make you feel powerful — like you can take over the world, even. But some reds may be better suited for you than others, and that can usually be determined based on your complexion and undertones. We tuned into the expertise of local professional makeup artist and beauty expert, Kimberly Arnold, to decode which daring red hues are best for you, plus, some tips for achieving a flawless looking application.
MEDIUM - Both cool and warm
tones complement medium skin tones quite well. But if you have warmer undertones, a poppy red may be better to counteract any sallowness. — Glossier.com
Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint in ‘Vibin’ DEEP - If you have cooler undertones, opt for blue based bordeaux reds or wines. Go for a true, ruby red that has depth. For a more chocolatey red look, opt for a cherry lipstick with brown undertones for a richer and more neutral pop of color — Tarte.com
A CHIEVING TIPS FOR A PLICATION AP FLAWLESS 1. Bold hues, like reds and berries, typically don’t sit well on dry, flaky lips. Be sure to hydrate with a lip balm a few minutes before applying your lipstick (or before you start doing your makeup) and then gently dab the excess balm away right before application. Tip: for extra smooth lips, exfoliate with a lip scrub before applying lip balm.
32 | triangle style
Glossier Generation G in ‘Carousel’
2. To add dimension, line your lips with a lip pencil that’s deeper than your lipstick shade. Browns are, typically, a great color to add depth, no matter which lip color you’ll be sporting. Blend any stark lines with a lip brush and then apply your lipstick to lips for a fuller looking pout. 3. For a touch of added dimension and shimmer, apply a highlighting powder to your cupid’s bow and the center of the lips.

Hi Anna, I don’t necessarily have a double chin, but I do have a little bit of loose skin that is really starting to bother me. What kinds of non-invasive treatments can I do to tighten that little bit of sag under my chin. Thanks - Rebecca Rebecca, our body’s collagen production (the protein responsible for plump and elastic skin) naturally decreases as we age, so unfortunately, loose skin is something that we all deal with to some degree or another. Luckily, there are a few non-invasive treatments that can help to improve the appearance of the delicate skin on our necks! While creams and serums only address the topmost layer of the skin, they can certainly help improve its appearance. My top pick is Revision Skincare’s Nectifirm Advanced, because it incorporates a variety of different peptides, antioxidants and plant extracts specifically blended to improve delicate neck and décolletage skin. As for non-invasive procedures, a laser treatment is most likely your best bet! Two options I’d look into are the SkinTyte treatment by Sciton, which delivers quick pulses of infrared energy to the layers of the skin responsible for collagen production, and RF Microneedling by INTRAcel, which combines all the benefits of traditional microneedling with the addition of radiofrequency energy to target the deeper, collagen-producing layers of the skin. As always, though, my best recommendation is to schedule an in-person full facial analysis with an experienced skincare provider to learn about which option is right for you and your goals. Best of luck! Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

First piece of furniture you ever bought Bedside tables and I still have them. They were designed by Michael Weiss for Vanguard Furniture. I had admired them for so long. My house was full of family pieces and hand-me downs. One of the owners of Vanguard offered me a special deal, so that pushed me to make my first big girl purchase! And almost 10 years later, no regrets! What is currently on your nightstand “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate, my “Mom’s One Line A Day” journal, and Eloise! If you were granted three wishes • Freeze time so my children stop growing up so fast! • An unlimited budget for my new personal house. It’s a bear of a renovation project but I love old houses! • To clone myself so I could do it all, all the time! Toughest room to decorate: Being in the design stage of my new personal house I am struggling with the foyer. I think foyers generally can be intimidating because this space truly sets the tone for the rest of the house. I want the furniture selections to be impactful but also functional, and I want to make maximum impact on the walls while ensuring that the selection here allows for easy transitions to the connected dining room and formal living room. The song that you blast on full volume Currently, to be perfectly honest, The Middle by Maren Morris and Grey. It’s my daughter Lil’s favorite song. She knows every single word to the entire song and likes to belt it out on maximum volume. The Triangle’s best kept secret: There is a flower vendor at the NC State Farmers market who sells a variety of creatively arranged bouquets at unbelievable prices. She also will sell gorgeous flowers by the stem for less than I can buy them wholesale. I love mixing dahlias in a range of colors from yellow and pink to deep purple. I love having fresh flowers in the house and if time ever doesn’t allow for me to cut and buy and make my own arrangements this is always a great trick. 40 | triangle style

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A GOOD MAKEOVER? This small area between the stairs and a finished basement was completely wasted space until we built a custom double desk and cabinetry. Now it is a functional workspace with plenty of storage. Despite the two windows, this kitchen was very dark. The dark tile, dark wood cabinets, and lack of flow with the rest of the house needed to be addressed. Before we redesigned it, the kitchen layout wasn't very functional. A wall separated it from the living spaces, the pantry was in another room, there weren't enough cabinets, and the refrigerator doors blocked a main walkway. Most homes have a room that feels a little cramped, dark, and unwelcoming. Short of major construction work, you might feel that there's not much you can do to improve the feel of a small room - but you'd be wrong. Getting a little crafty with your home decor options can make a surprisingly big difference, bringing spaciousness and light into even the smallest rooms. Here's what to do:
GIVE YOUR FURNITURE SOME SPACE Give your furniture room to breathe by bringing it inward from the walls rather than pushing at all back. Try not to position each item close to another, and ideally choose furniture designs which raise it on legs rather than being flat to the floor. Even a few inches space around and between items can make a big difference to the feel of a room.

DESIGNING SPACES THAT ARE PRACTICAL AND POLISHED
REMOVE CLUTTER When space is limited, you need to avoid crowding and clutter if you want to stop a room feeling claustrophobic. Keep ornaments and pictures to a minimum, and cluster them together as a focal point rather than dotting them evenly around. Keeping your walls and surfaces sparse and simple helps to make the most of their dimensions. KEEP YOUR FLOORS CLEAR The same idea applies to your floors. A lightcolored natural wood, laminate, or tiled floor will maximize the sense of space, but if you need use carpet, keep it simple rather than highly patterned. Also, avoid using large rugs where possible, especially darker-colored ones covering up light flooring. REMOVE DRAPES Heavy drapes can make a room feel significantly smaller, thanks both to their size and their lightblocking effects. Replace them with bright and breezy blinds instead to save space and leave your windows clear. Also, keep your windowsills free of plants, ornaments, or pictures which will block light, adding to the sense of gloom. CHOOSE LOW-SLUNG FURNITURE If you're choosing new furniture for a room, go for low-slung, slim designs rather than high and chunky ones. This will make the room feel higher and more spacious. You can also try emphasizing the furniture's low profile with a high, minimalist floor lamp placed in a corner. BEYOND THE PALE Stop the walls from crowding by painting them in a simple shade of white, cream, or pale beige. Avoid bold colors, patterns, and borders, which all focus the eye on the small size of the room.

FORM AND FUNCTION
USE MIRRORS CREATIVELY Lastly, clever use of mirrors placed around the room will create an illusion of spaciousness. Hang them where they'll take advantage of natural light from windows or skylights, and remember that two medium-sized mirrors set a distance apart will have a greater effect than a single large one. Few people are lucky enough to have a perfect home full of ideal rooms. But you don't need to let size be an issue with smaller spaces when a little home decor throughout can go a very long way indeed. •••

SOUTHWESTERN CHICKEN AND VEGETABLE SOUP By using a store-bought rotisserie chicken (or using le over chicken), this Southwestern Chicken and Vegetable Soup comes together quickly and easily! You can make this recipe even healthier by using lowsodium chicken broth and low sodium diced tomatoes. Although I loved the flavor of the chili powder and cumin, feel free to adjust the amounts to your personal preference. Full of chicken, corn, black beans and kale… you just can’t go wrong with this hearty soup. Oh, and it’s great with tortilla chips! 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup chopped yellow onion 1 cup chopped green bell pepper (about 1
medium pepper)
1 tablespoon freshly minced garlic 2-1/2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes with juices 6 cups chicken broth 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 2 cups frozen corn kernels 3 cups fully cooked shredded chicken Salt and pepper, to taste 4 cups tightly packed chopped fresh kale Lime juice (desired amount) for topping Fresh chopped cilantro, for garnish Heat olive oil over medium heat in a dutch oven or soup pot. Add onions and bell pepper. Cook for approximately 6 minutes, or until vegetables are so ened, stirring frequently. Add garlic and cook an an additional 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
Add chili powder, cumin, tomatoes with juices, chicken broth, black beans, corn and chicken. Season with desired amounts of salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Increase heat to medium high and bring to a boil.
Top with desired amount of lime juice and fresh chopped cilantro.

Add chopped kale, stir to combine and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until kale is tender.
Oh my word. If you’re a baked potato lover like me, do yourself a favor and MAKE THIS SOUP. You won’t be disappointed! Seriously… how can you go wrong with potato chunks in a creamy cheese sauce with bacon, green onions and mushrooms? I am a hard-core mushroom LOVER but if you’re not just simply omit them. When I took the first bite I was overwhelmed at how delicious this soup tasted.
LOADED BAKED POTATO SOUP 6 slices bacon, fully cooked and crumbled (about 1 cup crumbled) and additional bacon for garnish, if desired 6 tablespoons butter 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups milk 4 cups peeled and cubed (into bite size pieces) russet potatoes (about 3-4 potatoes) 1/2 cup sliced green onions (about 3) and additional green onions for garnish, if desired 1 (6-ounce) jar sliced mushrooms, drained 1-1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese and additional for garnish, if desired 1/3 cup sour cream Salt and pepper, to taste
Melt butter in a soup pot or dutch oven over medium high heat. Slowly add flour and whisk constantly for 1 minute. Gradually add milk while continuing to whisk constantly for 2 minutes. Add potatoes and green onions and stir well to combine. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until potatoes are tender, stirring frequently. Add mushrooms, cheese, sour cream, salt and pepper and stir well to combine. Garnish with additional crumbled bacon, green onions and cheese if desired.

THREE SPOOKY PLACES IN NORTH CAROLINA.
BROWN MOUNTAIN IN PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST
Nearby residents have been seeing small, ball-shaped lights appearing randomly over Brown Mountain near Morganton since before the Civil War. Investigations by the United States Geological Survey revealed nothing, and the source of the lights remains a mystery. They are most often visible in early fall; they appear to rise over the ridge, disappear, and then explode silently like Roman candles. There are two local legends regarding the Brown Mountain lights. One tells of a war between two American Indian tribes. During breaks in battle, women went to the mountain at night, carrying large torches to look for their husbands, and themselves were killed. The lights are said to be the torches of the women, whose spirits eternally continue to search in the night. Another tells of a little girl who went missing in the night and her father, who went to the mountain with a torch to search for her. The father and daughter both died, but the father's spirit continues the search and his torch still appears as the lights. Since there is no road on the mountain and no one lives in the immediate area, locals believe Brown Mountain is truly haunted. Written By S. Solutions 58 | triangle style
CONCORD MIDDLE SCHOOL IN CONCORD
Teachers and staff at Concord Middle School have many scary tales of inexplicable happenings. They hear footsteps in the halls at night and doors slam shut with no apparent cause when no one is around. A Catholic priest reportedly performed an exorcism in the school's media center in 2001, and since then faculty members have heard strange sounds coming from the hallways and the auditorium.

PHARR MANSION IN GASTONIA
The Pharr Mansion on Spencer Mountain in Gastonia was built in the late 1700s. No one has ever lived in the house because the owner intended it for her grandson, who died shortly after construction ended. After his death, his grandmother declared that no one could ever live in it. When the heir passed away, the town decided to turn the mansion into a haunted house as a fundraiser for the local fire department. During the renovation, workers noticed lights turning themselves off and on, heard people walking in empty rooms, and noticed tools disappearing or moving. They also experienced unexplained cold spots in the house, heard children's laughter, and discovered that batteries drained more quickly than usual. Volunteer firemen working during the haunted house event claimed to have felt someone following them. One saw pictures fall off the wall and another ran from the house claiming to have seen a woman's ghost holding two severed heads. They boarded up the house and abandoned it after the event, but passers-by still see a woman's ghost behind the second-story bay window or walking in front of the house. Paranormal investigators, ghost hunters, and in the case of the Brown Mountain Lights, an official government agency have all studied these haunted places. Yet, there have been no scientific explanations for the unusual happenings. That makes them even more attractive to North Carolina thrill seekers! •••

FALL FOLIAGE FAVES : A BRIEF JAPANESE MAPLE
HISTORY AND LIST OF MUST-HAVES
Mother Nature tells us fall is here by changing her color. In North Carolina, we’re gifted with alluring backdrops of reds, oranges and yellows through the change in gears from the heat of the summer to the mild air of autumn. And with the shift in temperature, it’s nice to note that fall is the best time of year to plan and plant your landscape. Why? Because the milder conditions are just right for plants to concentrate their energy on establishing roots rather than budding, blooming or existing in the heat of summer or frost of winter.
62 | triangle style
So now’s your chance to grab your garden goods and play around. While there are many landscaping staples that provide contrast yearlong like lorapetalum, hollies and firs, if we could pick just one tree or shrub to serve as a statement piece in your yard, we’d point you in the direction of the Japanese maple.
twisted trunks and sizes vary from small, one-foot bonsais to tall trees reaching up to 23 feet towards the sky. Most Japanese maples prefer well-drained, shaded areas but some are able to tolerate more light than others and serve as excellent centerpieces in container gardens or patio pots.
Thesetrees of rare beauty are such garden gems because an enormous amount of care goes into their propagation. Much different from the simple act of planting a seed or shoot, there’s an actual art that goes into the creation of each and every tree.
A few of our go-to’s are Viridis (weeping small-sized tree, vivid green in spring, gold and crimson in fall), Autumn Moon (small-sized tree, yellow and orange in spring, salmon to chartreuse in fall), Crimson Queen (weeping dwarf tree, crimson in spring, dark scarlet in fall), Bloodgood (hardy mediumsized tree, burgundy in spring, scarlet in fall), Red Dragon (laceyleafed small-sized tree, purple in spring, apple red in fall), Coral Bark (vibrant red barked tree, lime green leaves with red in spring, golden in fall), Shaina (dense dwarf tree, variegated yellow, green), Tamukeyama (mounding dwarf tree, deep purple in spring, bright red in fall) and Burgundy Lace (medium to tall-sized tree, burgundy leaves).
Dating back as far as the seventh century, the Acer palmatum or Japanese maple has been propagated by horticulturalists using methods of budding, tissue cultures, layering and cutting for so long it’s hard to say just how many cultivars or cultivated varieties exist around the world but to be sure there are hundreds. While the Japanese maple is a deciduous tree, it provides seasonal interest with bright, bold colors ranging from lime green, lemon yellow, blood red, deep burgundy to rich purple all gracing the star-shaped leaves we know to belong to the common maples. Th ough intense cultivation, leaf structure fluctuates from one type to another and some Japanese maples even carry intricate fringed leaf variations which help these ancient trees maintain their status as the highlight of many gardens. Trees can be upright or weeping, trained to grow with

ASK THE EXPERTS
DR ADAM PALO | THE EYE INSTITUTE YOUREYEINSTITUTE.COM
THERE ARE SO MANY MYTHS WE HAVE ALL HEARD RELATED TO EYESIGHT AND VISION, ABOUT WHAT’S GOOD FOR EYES AND WHAT ISN’T. BUT, ARE ANY OF THEM ACTUALLY TRUE?
DR. ADAM PALO FROM THE EYE INSTITUTE
GIVES US THE STRAIGHT ANSWER ABOUT
FIVE COMMON VISION MYTHS.
SITTING TOO CLOSE TO THE TV OR STARING AT A COMPUTER SCREEN IS BAD FOR YOUR EYES.
This is actually true for a couple reasons. Sittin too close to anything will cause the eyes to focus more, temporarily straining the eyes. You may notice this as a pulling sensation around your eyes. Second, the blue-violet wavelength of light coming off of these devices is not filtered by the anterior anatomy of our eyes like UV light is. This means all of this blue-violet light is gettin past the cornea, past the natural lens and being absorbed by our retina. In the short term, this causes further eye strain and can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Long term, this 415-455 nm wavelength of light can damage the Retinal Pigment Epithelium, one of the layers in your retina. This can lead to conditions such as Macular Degeneration over many years. This is why we stress the newest blue-blocking technology at TEI.
ARE READING GLASSES HELPFUL OR HARMFUL?
Prescription reading glasses are helpful! The purpose of reading glasses is to help the eyes with focus. Especially after the age of 40, our eyes slowly lose their ability to focus on objects at arm's length or closer. Reading glasses help make up the difference in what your eyes are struggling to do naturally. Sometimes, however, someone under the age of 40 will need reading glasses. This may be due to a binocular or accommodati e disorder that your optometrist would pick up during your annual exam. Some eyes can't focus naturally and they rely on the aid of reading glasses to help them see the computer, tablet, phone or book.

SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ABOUT CARROTS: DO THEY REALLY HELP IMPROVE YOUR NIGHT VISION?
While carrots are full of beta-carotene, a nutrient that is good for protecting the eyes, they don't actually help improve your night vision. This tale started from British propaganda in World War II and has somehow survived time. More importantly, understanding the importance of a diet rich in whole foods — foods that do not come in packaging. Whole foods, such as leafy green |vegetables, are packed full of nutrients that help protect your eyes short term and long term. I like to tell my patie ts that everything you have been told to be good for your heart is also good for your eyes and will protect your vision.
AS YOU GET OLDER, THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT YOUR WORSENING VISION.
This is not true. I try to educate my patie ts thoroughly so they have the knowledge necessary to protect their eyes while they are still young. I believe
in preventati e therapy at any time it is possible. However, there are times when we are unable to control our genetic makeup through preventi e therapies. We pride ourselves at TEI on providing the newest and best technology available to detect eye disease before a patie t experiences visual symptoms. By detecting early we are able to recommend changes in diet and lifestyle, and can implement therapeutic or surgical therapies when necessary.
EYESIGHT IS HEREDITARY AND WE ARE BOUND TO SUFFER THE SAME EYE PROBLEMS AS OUR PARENTS.
While some eye conditions are hereditary, not all vision problems are. Simple near or farsightedness isn't always the same as the parents, though it can be in severe cases. For example, my mother and father were both farsighted. My brother has no vision issues and I am near sighted.
Sometimes getting a smooth, sleek body contour can be very difficult or even impractical by relying on exercises and diet alone. In this case, CoolSculpting® can be an excellent choice in achieving the body of your dreams. Following are five benefits of CoolSculpting®: 1. QUICK AND SIMPLE The time taken during CoolSculpting® treatments depends on the size of the part of the body being treated. However, most procedures take approximately 35 minutes per cycle, which is relatively fast and easy to do on a busy schedule. Furthermore, you can go back to your daily activities immediately after your session. 2. NON-INVASIVE One of the significant benefits of CoolSculpting® is the non-invasive nature of the treatment, which translates to no downtime. It works through a cryolipolysis treatment method that freezes fat cells in the targeted areas, leaving the surrounding parts untouched. Your body then gets rid of the cells gradually over the following weeks, resulting in a leaner, well-contoured figure. 3. TREATS DIFFERENT AREAS The common areas that most people choose to treat with CoolSculpting® are the thighs, love handles, and stomach, even though other parts of the body can be enhanced by the non-surgical procedure such as bra fat and arms, commonly known as “bat wings.”
4. NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS Any cosmetic procedure aims to enhance you. But CoolSculpting® gives naturallooking body contours that begin to show gradually over time, just like how you would tone your body progressively by exercising. CoolSculpting® results can last a long time as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, the results begin to show gradually, so it’s important to be patient and have realistic expectations. 5. BOOSTS SELF-CONFIDENCE When you look good, you feel good, and that is what CoolSculpting® can provide. After adhering to strict exercising routines as well as a great diet, you may have been discouraged since you haven’t seen the results that you hoped for. We have very little control over where our bodies decide to store or lose fat, which makes the efforts to tone our body seem futile. This procedure can help you get and stay motivated towards a happier, fitter you! If you are not up for a surgical procedure, but you’re bothered by stubborn pockets of exercisedefiant fat on your body, contact us at Southern Dermatology and learn more about the option of CoolSculpting®

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT It was 4am and I couldn't go back to sleep. So I did what I always did in these circumstances: I got up, made myself a cup of coffee, took it to the dining room, where I had set up my various files for my annual tax excursion. It was March and this year I was determined to get it out the door well before the deadline. It was nice in the house: quiet, there were no cars on the road and I felt as if I were having a peek at the world before anyone else was up and mulling around in their own kitchen. After a bit, deciding I could probably go back to sleep now, I closed up my computer, pushed my chair away from the table and stood up. Only I couldn't get up. My leg was like putty - no bones, no nothing. I tried to move my leg. Forward, backward, even sideways. Nothing. I held onto the table and with my functioning leg sat back down. I was panicked. Was I having a stroke? A heart attack? What was going on? My phone was back
in the bedroom -- a short distance away down a very narrow hallway. I edged myself along the table to the door, reached out to grab it, and pulled it shut behind me. Making it to the end of my bed, I threw myself over it, reaching for my phone, I called 911 and asked Siri to send my friend a message. In a couple of hours, it would be time for our 4 mile weekly walk together, which we had been taking for over 15 years now, and I didn't want her standing in the cold waiting for me. From that point on, there's not too much I can remember, other than being hoisted into an ambulance, taken back out again, wheeled into a corridor where there was a strange looking assembly of people dressed in hospital gowns waiting for me. Am I in a strange land I thought. Are these people aliens? Are they people? Then someone, I presume it was a doctor, was asking me a lot of questions. I pulled myself back into reality.

After being wheeled into a crisp modern looking room, I was hooked up to all sorts of contraptions, told I was going to be given something to prevent damage from a stroke, if that is what it was. When I said I didn't want to risk the side effects. (Whether I have a tooth pulled, a new medication given, whatever, I am one of those people who seems to be in the category of those who have an adverse reaction.) So they called the Stroke Center for guidance. The doctor on call, teleconferenced an exam of me, and told the staff he couldn't be sure if I had had a stroke or not. My symptoms put me in the "maybe" category. He thought it would be ok if I didn't want to take the medicine. But I should have an MRI, etc. anyway. One of the nurses said if I didn't have the medicine, I might have to have a long physical therapy journey ahead of me. I said that was okay. Better that than the side effects. Let me stress here that I know people who have taken this shot and they have had no adverse effects. But I am a worrier and my history has often proved me wise. Though I realized I was taking a chance.

So I was sent up to the cardiac unit, given a private room and my week began. I couldn't walk by myself and two people, one on each side, assisted me whenever I needed to go to the ladies room. By the end of the week, after a bevy of tests, the neurologist said, "Every now and then, there's a case where we just don't know the answer. But say it's 5 or 10 years from now, you are no longer in this condition, would you care if we couldn't find a name attached to whatever caused this or would you just be happy it had healed? Well the answer to that question, I had no hesitation in answering. He said I had nerve damage. I couldn't walk, couldn't move my right foot, it curled to the left, and I couldn't put my foot flat on the floor. I "might be healed in time, maybe a year or so, with electrical stimulation and physical therapy. Though it's hard to say. Even if your leg does heal, it will always be weaker than your other one. And the pain may be with you for the rest of your life. So far he has been right on the pain front. There is so much more to say. But my word count buzzer is looming. In the next issue, I will take you on the next leg (no pun intended) of my journey. I am filled with handy information, little things I learned that made life in the rehab center enjoyable. Yes, even enjoyable. fall | 69
"I'm right and you're wrong, and that's all there is to it!" Have you ever said or thought those words? Most people have a strong conviction they are correct and the individual they quarrel with is ridiculously wide of the mark. Although such a reaction's common it doesn't do relationships any good and can make you feel bad. Here's why it hurts and it's okay to let go of the desire to have your way.

YOUR RELATIONSHIPS SUFFER WHEN CONVERSATIONS GET STUCK Just like people get stuck in a rut conversations can too. When you meet a stalemate--you and your opponent are sure they are correct and the other's mistaken--communication goes downhill. There's nothing left but to fight for your corner. With narrowed eyes and pursed lips you spew your defense, and whoever's on the receiving end follows suit. Even if your opponent relents because they haven't got the energy to continue, you don't really win. All you've done is make a point and leave the other person in a withered state. In an ideal quarrel, both parties win and no one goes home with their tail between their legs. Refusing to listen rather than verbally jab to get your idea across means you're in a lose/lose scenario. Find out how to meet your needs and the other individual's and you'll get what you want without ruining your relationship.

WHY TRYING TOO HARD TO WIN HURTS Everybody wants to be heard. They wish to have their say and shift events in their favor. When you fight --which happens when you push your point home hard and are blind to anyone else's feelings--you compromise yourself because you forgo the need to be understood. The wish to be understood is deep-rooted in the human psyche. You are wired to connect with your tribe--the rest of the human race-because you are more likely to thrive when together than alone. Not gaining the respect and understanding of people damages your relationships and leaves a dull ache in your heart. Give up the fight, and see discussions as the chance to swap data about needs, and you will feel better than when you fight tooth and claw.

LOOK AT DISCUSSIONS PRODUCTIVELY People often consider discussions routes to ensuring they get what they want. Entering communication with the aim to win, as though the person you converse with is your enemy though, automatically puts you on edge. You are defensive because you imagine you will be verbally attacked. View conversations as ways of building satisfaction for all involved and you'll behave differently when you talk and listen well. Your relationships will improve and you are likely to get what you want without creating bitterness. If you usually battle with people to win arguments, you know doing so is painful. You're left unhappy, even when you seem to be victorious. Strangely, when you change your outlook and don't aim to win, you will probably triumph. •••

WAYS TO FIND PEPPERMINT: Peppermint is an herb that developed from interbreeding between two mint species, water mint and spearmint. It can be found all over the world, particularly in the United States and Europe. Its green leaves have been used for millennia for their healing and deodorizing properties. Peppermint can be consumed raw, such as in salads. It is also often dried to be incorporated into potpourri or even tea. It is also one of the most commonly used essential oils. The oil can be used to add scent to cosmetics, added to foods when handled properly, and even included in some dietary supplements.
USES OF PEPPERMINT: Peppermint is commonly used as a perfuming agent, added to bath bombs, lip balms, and other toiletries. When you're ill, the pungent oils can help clear the sinuses and help decrease tracheal irritation and coughing. When you're not ill, the oil is still helpful, promoting memory retention, as well as relaxation. Peppermint is considered to have anti-inflammatory properties. Topically, it may be applied in ointments or salves, particularly to sore muscles. It has also been used to treat headaches. It may also help calm the burning and itching from insect bite or stings. Peppermint is useful for the gut, as well. When people undergo a barium study for diagnostic imaging, peppermint can decrease the occurrence of gut spasms. This can help with gas pain as well. It is commonly used to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome in capsule form. No matter what your health is like, peppermint may be beneficial for you. But always remember it’s always good to start by contacting your medical provider to ensure that it is safe for you. •••

LILYMAES BIG Move... Lilymaes, with its boutique offering of women’s apparel, accessories, gifts, and more, has been a style staple in Wake Forest for 13 years. Now the Lilymaes family, led by founder Tiffany Brockmann, is excited for their next chapter: moving to a new, 7,000-square-foot store on Rogers Road in Wake Forest that they hope to open in late October. The boutique is considering increasing the amount of mens clothing we currently carry and adding in kids and tween/teen clothing into the mix. The new store is more than one and a half times the size of Lilymaes current space. The move will mean much more room for merchandise, plus three spacious dressing rooms. Lilymaes, which started as a kiosk in 2005 in The Factory is now a boutique with offerings that include Yeti tumblers and baby gifts plus brands like Brighton, Pandora, Alex + Ani, and Southern Tide. Brockmann opened her first full-sized store in 2006 and has been expanding the her customer base ever since. They keep coming back for the boutique’s unique items, fair prices, and friendly staff who love helping shoppers pick the perfect gift — and gift wrap to go with it! Holl & Main is Now Open! Holl & Main Boutique is one of the newest fashion hot spots in Wake County. The Morrisville boutique opened in May and has been a hit among shoppers in search of both playful and professional pieces. Owner Jenn Holland, an Apex native and graduate of N.C. State University, decided to pursue her dream of opening a clothing boutique after working in a corporate environment for 7 years. In January of 2016, Holland was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Holl & Main became her opportunity to change her lifestyle for the better while also combining her passions of style and helping others. In Holl & Main, customers will find quality, classic fashion with a modern, contemporary feel. While in the corporate world, Holland saw a need for more professional attire in the boutique industry. The pieces she carries in Holl & Main work in multiple settings: days at work, nights out with friends, and weekend festivities. Welcoming customers with both a high-end vibe and approachable atmosphere, Holl & Main is a place for women of all ages to find affordable clothing with topnotch customer service. “I think the best part of owning the boutique is the customer interactions and relationships we build helping someone find an outfit they feel good in, Holland said. WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS GASLIGHT 1944 Starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotten, this psychological thriller is about an unsolved murder that took place in London when Paula was just a little girl. The murdered woman, a great beauty and a renowned soprano, was Paula’s aunt. And though Paula was asleep upstairs at the time of the murder, she saw something in the shadows, something that still haunts her sleep more than ten years later. Living in Italy now and studying music, Paula falls in love with the charming man who accompanies her on the piano. After knowing him for no more than two weeks, she marries him. He tells her he has always wanted a townhouse in London, convincing her they should move to the house Paula inherited there, the house in which she never stepped a foot since the day her aunt was murdered inside. OCTOBER SKY A warmhearted and engaging film, it is based on a true story about Homer Hickam who, in 1957, lives in a coal town in West Virginia, a place where the idea of going to college is out of bounds. Like his father, he is instead expected to work in the mines. But when Homer looks into the sky and sees the Russian Sputnik orbit the earth, he realizes how close a life outside the coal town can be, if only he can find a way to
get there. With a photo of the Rocket Scientist Wernher von Braun as his inspiration, Homer talks four boys into helping him build a rocket so he can enter and win the National Science Fair, and along with it, a scholarship to college. Not a single one of these young boys, including Homer, has any idea what materials they need, where and how to get them, let alone how to put a rocket together and make it fly. FORKS OVER KNIVES doesn’t just talk about how a plant based diet makes us live longer, protects us against disease, lowers our cholesterol, our weight, gives us more energy and better sleep, its renowned scientists present us with the evidence. We see plaque build up in blood vessels and then gobble itself up. We see statistics from a worldwide, decades long study and learn that societies with plant based diets have virtually no incidence of breast cancer or heart disease. We see individuals with diabetes and degenerative diseases improve, or even reverse their conditions. (First consult a physician) And we see, by the end of the film, the narrator’s dangerously high cholesterol is now cut in half. After seeing it, my husband and I came home and wrote out a grocery list. And you know what? He has already lost 20 lbs. and says he feels better. I’ve lost 8 lbs. and am now sleeping through the night. It works!
