beauty // before and after
Going from one extreme to the other is never a simple (or cheap) task but for a color correction like this, we used the guide of The Hair Face and Lounge Master Stylist, Ashley, and a tag team of Kelly and Bailey to achieve this beautiful blonde. Our guest came to us after already starting the process of removing a previous purple from her hair at a different salon. We decided to start with lowlights, only focusing on her previously lightened and porous blonde roots, to help break up her base and give a more natural look, while focusing her highlights on the orange and pink throughout her ends, and balayaging any hair left out of foils. After processing for enough time to remove most of the pigment, but still maintaining the integrity of her hair, we did a root melt at the bowl to further blend and soften her base color. Next we added a toner to her ends to cancel out as much unwanted warmth as possible. After a blowdry, and some curls, our guest left happy with her new blonde hair, and only a little pink peeking through as evidence of what once was. The Hair and Face Lounge 1398 Kildaire Farm Rd, Cary, NC 27511 (919) 380-2029 thehairandfacelounge.com
After almost 5 long months without any hair maintenance, we chopped about 3 inches off and did a full color overhaul to bring her hair back to love. PLUM Hair Atelier 1028 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh (919) 833-0107 www.plumhairatelier.com
Being way overdue for color, cut and texture maintenance, she received a base color and balayage freshening up and a keratin treatment to help smooth her texture and eliminate frizz. PLUM Hair Atelier 1028 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh (919) 833-0107 • www.plumhairatelier.com

BEAUTY FIXES
No Frizz Zone
North Carolina humidity plus hair equals one of our worst beauty nightmares. But it can be easily remedied with a little extra care. Expert Tip: Opt for a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to combat frizziness, then apply a nourishing hair oil to ends. Be sure to avoid the scalp area for smooth insurance, without weighing hair down. Product Solutions: • Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, Ulta • Playa Ritual Hair Oil, Sephora.com
Bikini and sandal season is finally here, which means the usual summer beauty suspects (think frizzy hair, sunburn and melting makeup) are slowly creeping up on us. But never fear –– We have expert tips and product solutions to save you from this season’s worst beauty offenders! — Kimberly Arnold

Goodbye Lifeless Flat Hair
The e’s nothing that screams beach goddess more than tousled waves with undeniable body. And we have good news: envy-worthy waves are easy to achieve with the help of a CURLING IRON and a dash of DRY SHAMPOO Expert Tip: Use a dry shampoo to refresh hair and give the roots a boost of volume before any heat styling. For effortless beach waves, divide hair into sections and curl each piece away from face with a one inch barrel curling iron. When done, gently brush through curls for a tousled look. Apply your favorite sea salt-based hair mist or hair spray to set. Product Solutions: • By Gina Excel Infrared Curling Iron, By-Gina.com • Playa Dry Shampoo, Sephora.com
Treat Sun Damaged Skin
When you’re out in the sun, ten minutes too long might run you the risk of getting sunburned. While aloe gel has long been praised as an aftersun staple, CBD works wonders too. Expert Tip: For topical relief, CBD is a potent plant-based ingredient that can soothe a variety of inflammatory concerns, including pain associated with sunburn. And don’t worry, it won’t get you high. CBD in the form of an oil or balm can treat related skin damage, as well as provided some much needed relief. Product Solutions: • W!nk Body Salve, Wink-Wink.com
Protect Skin From UV Rays
While it’s important to wear sun protection yearround, it’s even more critical to remember to use it (and reapply it) on your face and body when you’ll be spending lots of time outside. Expert Tip: After applying sunscreen, follow with a SPF-infused foundation for added protection. Treatment-like foundations that are lightweight and help to heal and fortify skin are a perfect choice for summer-proofing your routine and shielding your skin from sun damage. Product Solutions:
• Alba Botanica Fragrance Free Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, Target • Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation, Oxygenetix.com
Keep Your Makeup Waterproof & Long-Lasting
Whether it’s tear-jerker summer weddings or beach vacations, waterproof makeup comes in great handy this time of year. Expert Tip: For added insurance, apply a primer before your makeup and lock your look in place with a setting spray afterwards. Product Solutions:
• Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer, Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes™ Waterproof Mascara, Tarte Clay Pot Waterproof Shadow Liner, Tarte Base Tape Hydrating Primer, All available at Ulta
Glow Like J-Lo
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate summer than to pump up the glow. Expert Tip: Before applying a shimmering body oil, lotion or mist, gently and thoroughly exfoliate skin to reveal a smoother texture –– perfect for the sheen to come. Apply shimmering products with a synthetic buffing brush to create a blended look. Product Solutions: • Sol de Janeiro Glowmotions, Sephora • W!nk CBD Sea Salt Scrub, Wink-Wink.com

HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED AT SYNERGY SPA?
Thank you so much Madison, for checking in on us! We are thrilled to announce that Synergy is back open at both locations f or all services! We were beyond gratef ul f or the support shown by our community during our temporary closure. Thanks to YOU, we were able to give some of that back by surprising hundreds of Healthcare Heroes with Synergy gift certificates and raising over $5,000 for the Inner-Faith Food Shuttle! We also got to send some of our Healthcare Heroes on the f ront line some Synergy self-care in the form of product samples and Synergy swag. Now that we’re open, I think it’s safe to say that we could all use a little pampering-- done safely, of course! Our safety and sanitation standards far exceed the minimum on a normal day, so in light of this situation, you can rest assured that we are continuing to keep your health and safety in mind as we’ve reopened. We are requiring that all clients, patients and staf f wear masks and get their temperatures checked upon entering our f acility, and we’ve also instituted a contactless checkout procedure to protect both you and our team, among other new policies. Visit us online to learn more about our updated procedures and be sure to follow along with us on social media @f eelsynergy f or exclusive savings and fun giveaways! --Anna

GETTING CREATIVE DURING COVID:
HOW LOCAL FASHION BOUTIQUES ARE SERVING YOU
44 | triangle style
Local Triangle boutiques have gone above and beyond to serve our community offering creative shopping solutions that keep you safe and styled. Your health is the highest priority for our owners and they have stopped at nothing short of curbside pickup, drop off services, window shopping and even private styling events to continue to show their dedication to patrons.
Fab’rik
Fab’rik of Cameron Village reopened their doors on May 8th. They began offering a “Social Shopping” experience over Instagram and Facebook which allowed customers to purchase through direct messaging. They stayed connected by increasing social media posts, lives, videos, and styling tips offering curbside pickup and drop off for purchases of $50 or more. They serviced customers on a more personal level with one on one virtual styling sessions which allowed them to reconnect with customers who have moved away from the Triangle area. They continue to open their doors after hours for “Girls Night Out” to host a safe and private shopping experience for you and your friends. They are taking extra precautions such as steaming all clothes after try on, store cleaning, and providing stations with masks and hand sanitizer station. “We did a virtual styling session for a customer that used to live in Raleigh and now lives in Austin, via Facetime,” says owner Paige Garner. “We picked out shorts, tops, dresses, shoes and tried things on for her, picked out items, styled them with accessories and showed her everything virtually then shipped her a spring wardrobe, all while we had to be closed. She loved everything and sent us pictures of her as she wore them! A really fun 90 minutes of shopping and she got everything she needed for the season, with the help of our stylists, virtually!” “We have a another customer who isn't comfortable going out very much during this time,” Pagie continues. “She has lost a few people close to her due to COVID. She works from home and limits engagement but wanted to support local businesses and of course do some summer shopping. She was having a birthday and her neighbors were having an outdoor social distanced "happy hour" in the cul-de-sac to celebrate. So we took a rack of clothing of styles she would like, to the neighborhood party for her and her friends to shop

They are taking measures such as social distancing and wearing masks in store. Private appointments are a service they have always provided to their clients and have continued to open their doors after hours for a more personalized and private experience.
CT Weekends
CT Weekends in Cameron Village are opening their doors to the community 11a-5p with limited the maximum capacity of 5 customers at a time in the store. If you prefer a more private way to shop they can help book your next appointment between 9a-11a. They communicated these new procedures through biweekly emails to their customers featuring “Porkchop,” their favorite CT weekends team member. They are taking every precaution to keep you safe from providing masks to hand sanitizers. They have even added a “Window Shopping” service where you can browse their latest items outside the store without having to step inside. “A lot of customers are still not comfortable coming into the store,” owner Kristi says as she looks over a list of spreadsheets. “What I am doing now is compiling a list of items to send pictures to the customers so they can still shop. I’ve even dropped off items to some customers who don’t feel safe going out.”

Check out what some North Carolina Museum of Art staffers have in their homes
Kat Harding, Public Relations and Social Media Manager
This watercolor is by local artist Pete Sack. I first saw him doing similar pieces for the North Carolina Museum of Art’s fundraiser, Monster Drawing Rally, in 2017, which was during my first few months on staff. I was unable to win one of them during the bidding at the event, so I reached out after and commissioned a piece. I love it! It reminds me of how happy I was to join the Museum staff, how important it is to support local artists, and one of my favorite NCMA events.
Karlie Marlowe, Director of Marketing
I’m a longtime fan of Atlanta artist Jenny Andrews Anderson’s colorful bowl series. (And her often-hilarious blog, My Favorite and My Best.) I commissioned these supersized versions and worked with her on the color combinations.
I also collect concert posters—apparently, blue and red ones. I love the artistry and history of Hatch Show Print. Our wedding invitations were even inspired by them! I also used to work at Hillsborough record label Yep Roc and snagged posters for two of my very favorite albums by Tift Merritt (designed by Raleigh artist Skillet Gilmore) and Chatham County Line.
Johnny Burleson, Chief Advancement Officer
This image was painted by Joanie Bell, Ashe County, NC based artist of our farm. @oldorchardcreek has been painted by many artists over the years and we are grateful to have some in our collection. This one was inspired from an attendee at a May wedding some years ago. The apple trees were in full bloom. When I look at this painting, I can smell the apple blossoms and hear the buzzing of the bees. [joanbell.com]
This image is by Gayle Stott Lowry, a Raleigh based artist, who is in the Museum's collection. This piece is from her Centennial Campus series and represents the landscape where Lake Raleigh was (and is today). This image was based on the time period after hurricane Fran when the dam on the lake was breached and the lake was drained. It is one of our favorite pieces. To me it speaks to the beauty of our world that exists all around us - even after tragedy. [gaylestottlowry.com]
Linda Doughtery, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art
My home is filled with contemporary works made out of wood, clay and glass -- traditionally considered "crafts" but made by young artists who ignore those boundaries and create works out of any material and process that gets their ideas across. My father was a glass blower and my son (now 26) is a ceramics artist. This untitled work is by the North Caroline artist, Tom Shields, who lives in Western North Carolina. He started out his career as a more traditional furniture and cabinet maker and then moved into creating works out of found materials (chairs, tables, cabinets, etc) that are fantastic hybrids of furniture and sculpture. I first discovered his work while visiting Penland School of Craft several years ago and I bought this work as a Father's Day present for my husband. For me, it evocatively symbolizes a parent and child/father and son in an incredibly simple and potent manifestation. Although it sits in our house as a work of art, we do occasionally conscript into service as a high chair when friends with young children come for dinner. tomshieldsart.com

DESTINATION - EDENTON History, Beauty and Charm One of America’s Prettiest Towns
The residents of this first colonial capital of North Carolina love sharing with visitors its rich history, scenic beauty, and exceptional architecture. Edenton is home to three National Historic Landmarks, one of which is the state’s oldest courthouse, built in 1767 and still in use. Recently recognized by Forbes.com as one of America’s Prettiest Towns, Edenton continues to show her age with pride. 86 | triangle style
1767 CHOWAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE Most intact colonial courthouse in America. Joseph Hewes, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of the commissioners appointed to raise money for its construction. Prominent revolutionary patriots, Judges James Iredell and Samuel Johnston heard cases here. The Courthouse is open Tuesday– Saturday from 10:00am–4:00pm Guided Docent Tours, $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for children 1886 ROANOKE RIVER LIGHTHOUSE The Roanoke River Lighthouse sits in its permanent location overlooking Edenton Bay. The lighthouse was originally located on screw-pilings in the Albemarle Sound marking the entrance to the Roanoke River near Plymouth. The lighthouse is believed to be the last surviving example in the United States of a squarer frame building built for a screw-pile base. The lighthouse was in commission from 1887 until 1941. The Lighthouse is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 to 4. Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for youth 312, and free for children 2 and under (must be accompanied by an adult).

ROCKY HOCK PLAYHOUSE The Rocky Hock Playhouse is a live professional Christian musical theater, featuring the works of Gloria Emmerich. Our new venue in Edenton is now at the newly remodeled Leon Nixon Catering Banquet Facilities just two miles north of Edenton on Hwy 32. SESAME SOBA NOODLES
S P I CY WAT E R M E LO N TO M ATO S A L A D
SUMMER CORN SAL AD CHILE LIME DRESSING
SESAME DRESSING ¼ cup rice vinegar 2 tablespoons tamari, more for serving ½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 teaspoon grated ginger 1 garlic clove, grated ½ teaspoon maple syrup or honey FOR THE SOBA NOODLES
6 ounces soba noodles*, see note Sesame oil, for drizzling 2 avocados, sliced Squeezes of lemon 2 cups blanched snap peas ¼ cup edamame 1 watermelon radish or 2 red radishes, very thinly sliced 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves Sesame seeds INSTRUCTIONS
Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, tamari, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and honey. Set aside. Bring an unsalted pot of water to a boil and cook the soba noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse well in cold water. This helps to remove starches that cause clumping. Toss the noodles with the dressing and divide into 2 to 4 bowls. Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto the avocado slices and add to the bowls along with the snap peas, edamame, radish, mint, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Drizzle with more tamari or sesame oil, if desired.
(this makes extra) ¼ cup Sir Kensington’s Avocado Oil Mayo or vegan Fabanaise 1 tablespoon olive oil ¼ cup chopped cilantro, including stems, plus more for garnish 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, plus extra slices for serving ⅓ serrano chile, plus more to taste pinch of garlic powder INGREDIENTS
3 ears of grilled corn on the cob 1 red pepper, diced 1 green pepper, diced ½ small cucumber, diced 2 ripe peaches, pitted and diced 1 small avocado, pitted and diced 8 basil leaves, thinly sliced juice of 1 lime, plus lime wedges for serving 3 tablespoons Chile Lime Dressing, plus more to taste sea salt
DRESSING
1 tablespoon tamari 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons rice vinegar 1 small garlic clove, minced ½ teaspoon minced ginger SALAD
3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced into wedges 5 cups cut watermelon (about 2-inch triangles) 1 thinly sliced jalapeño and/or a few Thai chiles 2 tablespoons Thai basil or regular basil 2 tablespoons toasted cashews ½ avocado, diced Sea salt, to taste, if desired Lime wedges, for serving INSTRUCTIONS
INSTRUCTIONS
Make the dressing: In a small food processor, combine the avocado mayonnaise, olive oil, cilantro, lime, serrano, garlic powder, onion powder and a few generous pinches of salt. Pulse until combined. Chill until ready to use. Slice the kernels off of the grilled corn and place in a large bowl. Add the red pepper, green pepper, cucumber, peaches, avocado, basil, lime juice, a few pinches of salt, and toss. Add a few tablespoons of dressing, toss again, then taste and add more dressing and/or salt to taste. Serve with extra dressing and lime slices on the side.
Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the tamari, lime juice, vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Arrange the tomatoes, watermelon, and jalapeños on a platter or in a shallow bowl. (This salad should not be served in a deep bowl because the flavorful juices will sink to the bottom.) Drizzle with the dressing and top with the basil, cashews, and avocado. Season to taste and serve with lime wedges.

Best Spray with DEET
Bug Sprays FIVE BEST
With these five great options, you are bound to find the bug spray that is perfect for you. While each one has slightly different characteristics, they are all effective in fighting off a variety of insects. Thankfully, with one of these bug sprays at your side, you can enjoy all the good things that summertime outdoors has to offer.
38 | triangle style
DEET (the common name for N,NDiethyl-meta-toluamide) provides a protective barrier against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches and many other biting insects when applied directly to clothing or skin. It is one of the most effective ingredients for fighting bug bites and has been safely used in the U.S. since the 1940s. OFF! Deep Woods Insect & Mosquito Repellent VIII is consistently ranked as one of the best sprays containing DEET on the market today.
Best Plant-Based Spray
If you prefer a plant-based bug spray, think about REPEL Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent. It does not contain DEET. Instead, its active ingredient is oil of lemon eucalyptus, which comes from the leaves of the Eucalyptus citriodora tree, and it is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Best Bug Spray for Your Clothes
Looking for an insect repellant that won't stain your clothing? Sawyer Products Premium Permethrin Insect Repellent for Clothing, Gear & Tents will not damage or stain fabric, clothing, plastic, finished surfaces, or most outdoor gear but is still extremely effective against chiggers, mites, mosquitoes and ticks. As a bonus, once it dries it is odorless so you don't have to worry about the usual bug spray smell.
Best Spray You Can Make Yourself
If you want an all-natural spray, consider making your own. Mix 1 cup white vinegar, ½ cup distilled water, and 20 drops each of these essential oils: eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemongrass. Pour into a spray bottle. This repellant is especially good for children and pets (just be sure to avoid their eyes). Reapply every 4 hours.

Great Reads WE WERE EIGHT YEARS IN POWER: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Before President Trump was elected, before the United States exploded into the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, America experienced eight years of a Black president in power. The title of this book, while certainly referring to those two terms, is actually a quote from the Reconstruction era, nearly 150 years ago. Ta-Nehisi Coates’s essays offer a comprehensive look at the history of racial politics in the United States, leading up to and through the Obama presidency and into the Trump term, providing essential reading for understanding what brought us to this moment today.
Books to Make You Think The convergence of global and national phenomena is making 2020 an unprecedented year. Globally, we are all reeling from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, we are learning, changing, and growing as individuals, as communities, and as a nation as we recognize the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement. These books, centering Black people and their stories, share history, culture, and experiences that connect us, educate us, and above all, make us think. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com
MOTHERHOOD SO WHITE: A MEMOIR OF RACE, GENDER, AND PARENTING IN AMERICA by Nefertiti Austin
An exploration of motherhood unlike any other, Nefertiti Austin describes her struggles, her realizations, and her triumphs as a Black single woman who adopts a Black baby boy from the American foster care system. Austin’s ruminations on single motherhood are at times universal, while also grounding her experience in the realities of being Black in America: “In my new skin as mother of a Black boy, I had to think through how we would navigate a world set up to challenge his very existence.” Illuminating, inspiring, challenging, and heartbreaking for every parent to read and consider the ways in which they raise their children.

HACKS 10 BARBECUE HACKS FOR THE PERFECT GRILL OUT
ADD WOOD FOR SMOKY FLAVOR A couple pieces (not little chips which just burn up) of good wood thrown on the coals can add some great smoky flavor to the grill. Hickory, oak, pecan wood—really anything will work!
CLASSIC GRILL MARKS, 10 AND 2 Want that classic cross-mark look to really wow the guests? Rotate the meat (think 10 and 2 on the clock!) halfway through your grilling time to add that steakhouse look and flair.
ROSEMARY SPRIGS FOR SKEWERS - Who doesn't like rosemary? Use springs as skewers to ad rich herbaceous flavor and a great look to your shish kabobs. DOUBLE SKEWERS - Not going for the rosemary? At least try this tip! Using two skewers will make your guests know you love them. It’s just so much easier to eat, and definitely easier to grill. ONLY FLIP ONCE - Don't make a classic rookie mistake of flipping too much, and this one counts for the grill-out and the pan. Over-flipping can cause uneven internal cooking, and won't crisp the edges of the meat as well. GET A GRILL THERMOMETER - This one should be obvious, but it still needs to be said— get a grill thermometer! It’s the only way to really know what's going on with your barbecue. If you don't have one yet, close the computer, put down the phone, and run to the store right now. It's like Superman's x-ray vision... except it’s a thermometer, and you are a grill hero, not a superhero. WHEN SMOKING, COVER WITH FOIL HALFWAY THROUGH - This tip is for those who like to slow-smoke meats. A pro tip from top competitors around the country—covering your meat with foil about halfway through the smoke retains flavor and juiciness. SPRAY WITH APPLE JUICE - This one is gaining popularity, but it’s still a great hack! Spraying your barbecue with apple juice when you grill is a great way to add a bit of extra oomph to the flavor and add some extra juiciness. Don't worry, the natural flavor of the meat and your favorite barbecue sauce won't be affected! COOK FISH ON LEMONS - Grilling your fish on top of lemons keeps the juice in, adds some zesty flavor, and makes it harder to overcook! What's not to like? CLEAN THE GRILL WITH AN ONION - Need to clean that charred and blackened grill-top after a long day of barbecueing? Cut an onion in half and go to town! It really works, quite well we might add.

APPS FOR YOUR WELL-BEING These days you can get an app for practically anything — But did you know that there are mental apps that can help your well being? We found a few that might be worth downloading...especially now. Hang in there!!!
Moodpath Available free for the iPhone and Android platforms, Moodpath helps you by giving you a free assessment of your mental health. While many apps ask you for information about how you've done over the past two weeks, Moodpath only asks you questions about how you currently feel. It asks you these questions over a period of two weeks, however. Once it completes assessing you, it allows you one of two options -- speaking to a professional or trying one of the dozens of mental health exercises or tools on the app.
What's Up? What's Up functions as a habit tracking diary. It's a one-stop destination for all kinds of coping mechanisms from breathing techniques to grounding exercises, and methods to recognize unhealthy thought patterns. If you're depressed, and you'd like a real person to speak to, it has a forum where you can get in touch with other people, as well.
Youper Youper is an artificial intelligence app that helps you manage depression. You get to chat with an AI assistant that asks you to think about your thoughts and behaviors each day. Then, the app comes up with the techniques that you need to follow to feel better. It can even give you a mental health summary to either help you understand yourself, or to show your doctor.
Happify When you're depressed, fun and games may be exactly what you need to feel better. Happify offers games and activities that are based on scientific principles such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and positive psychology. They are aimed at helping improve your mood. The app is free.
Pacifica This highly rated free app trains you in mindfulness, helping you identify your feelings and the causes of your problems. Once you successfully identify them, you get to learn to make peace with the challenges you face, through techniques such as muscle relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, and visualization. Pacifica is designed by a therapist and has great reviews.
Depression CBT Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a therapeutic method that helps people change their thoughts and actions using special techniques. This Androidonly app offers informative articles and mood tracking to help you fight negative thought patterns. You can even take a depression test from time to time to find out how much you've improved.
While apps may not replace therapy, they can help make you more aware of what you need to do to get better. In some cases, they can help you feel better, too. If you suffer from depression, anxiety or unhealthy thinking patterns, it can’t hurt to have these apps belong on your phone.

my covid reflection — BrocheAroe Fabian
In the before times, as they’re now known in our house, I was an extrovert. I ran festivals and events, worked on retail shop floors, and f requently traveled out of state f or work or conferences. I organized brunches and dinner parties, group camping trips and Movies in the Park af ternoons. And all of that came to a grinding halt at the end of February, early March when the severity of the coronavirus hit home, and my immunocompromised household closed its doors to the general public. At first, I thought my new life was going to be bland. How would I get my extrovert fix, that special blend of adrenaline and nerves that comes from expending energy while encouraging interaction among f riends and strangers? But I joined Zoom happy hours and Slack channels, What’s App group message threads and Facebook chats. I filled the calendar with virtual tours of zoos and private gardens, museum lectures and independent bookstore author events. I f elt more connected than ever! “We’ve got this,” I thought to myself, hopping f rom Zoom hangout to Zoom hangout one Thursday night. “It’s actually more efficient this way! I get to hang out with 25 people at one time.” But gradually, I got tired. The cognitive dissonance between staring at all those square boxed, pixelated faces while seeing only one other flesh-and-blood face in real life on a daily basis started to f eel empty and cold. Instead of the rush of engagement the way I f elt at in-person potlucks, I f elt only the drain of yet another sedentary hour spent staring glumly at a screen. And so instead of turning to yet one more device, I started switching them off.
68 | triangle style
I began slowly by muting group chats on various social media platforms, and then skipping a week or two of happy hour Zoom calls. Gradually the calendar cleared of live and prerecorded online events, and instead, I explored more simple, unplugged activities:
Pretending to go camping for the weekend by walking out the front door at 5 pm on Friday, going around the block, and entering through the gate into the backyard, where we had set up a tent with our sleeping bags and used our charcoal grill as a campfire for s’mores.
A night spent listening to records while putting together a puzzle. Every 20 minutes or so required getting up and flipping the record over or choosing a new one to continue the relaxed vibe.
We cleared out our basement of extraneous junk one night. We – of course – started a small vegetable garden, where even now our tomatoes and radishes are coming along nicely. I did indeed bake a banana-walnutchocolate chip bread.
An afternoon in the hammock in the backyard, f eeling weightless and listening to the birds while rereading a favorite mystery series. Combing through the craft supplies for watercolors, embroidery floss, and a plain handkerchief, combining new and old skills into a special art project that has taken several weeks of short bursts of creativity to complete.
And while every once in a while, I hop on a happy hour Zoom call, check in with a friend group’s Slack channel, and enjoy an author event with 200 other people from around the world, I’m embracing my newf ound introverted life, throwing dinner parties for only four: me, our two dogs, and my wife.

Wallpaper TRENDY
DESIGNS
CRE ATE GRE AT ACCENT WALLS WITH A VARIET Y OF COLORS, TEXTURES, AND PATTERNS.
Wallpaper has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last couple of years, which has given homeowners new options with their dĂŠcor. The right choice of wallpaper can make almost any room appear upgraded and trendy. However, you need to know what styles, patterns, and colors look best in which areas of a home.
Horizontal Stripes:
This type of wallpaper can cause a small space to look more substantial than it is by making a wall appear longer. Horizontally striped wallpaper looks fabulous in a laundry room, for example. Choose a light background such as white or beige and then choose a stripe color such as pale yellow or peach or even a soft blue. The more subdued the color, the more serene your space will feel.
Vertical Stripes:
In your master bedroom, you can create a gorgeous accent wall behind your bed with vertical-stripped wallpaper. Use it directly behind the mattress only and all the way up to the ceiling. The stripes will make your room look like you have ultra-high ceilings, and your bed area will instantly become the focal point in the space. Choose two coordinating colors to match with the rest of your dĂŠcor for the best result.
Angular Geometric Pattern:
To improve the look of a powder room, try a triangular or rectangular pattern on a lightly colored background. Such a design fools the eye into thinking more space exists in the powder room because it draws attention upward. This design trick will work exceptionally well if you use the wallpaper on the upper half of the walls and then add beadboard to the lower half of the walls all the way around the room.
EXCEPTIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICES
MANAGE. RENT. BUY. SELL . INVEST
Circular Geometric Pattern: Create a dramatic accent wall in your dining room using wallpaper with a circular pattern. Circles are the newest rage in dĂŠcor for anything from throw pillows to wall patterns. Try wallpaper with a lovely beige background and random gray, brown, and cream-colored circles in the design to produce a sophisticated look that will leave all of your guests in awe.
Leaves and Flowers:
Create a lovely accent wall with wallpaper that displays leaves and colorful flowers. Small floral designs look best and won't overwhelm the look of the rest of the dĂŠcor. Pink and green flowers will result in a gorgeous appearance as will beige and green or yellow and white. Choose a pattern with only two to three colors, so the wallpaper doesn't look too busy.
Wooden Plank Design:
Hang wallpaper that looks like wooden planks behind the desk in your home office. You'll create a warm and classy feeling in the room without the expense of real wood. Place some wooden bookcases on each side against the wall to enhance the appearance of the wallpaper.
WHEN KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SUPERIOR SERVICE COUNTS
Textured Suede:
This superb choice of wallpaper will look stunning in a formal dining room. The soft, smooth texture will create a perfect accent wall and add a sophisticated touch to your décor. Choose a solid color such as tan, gray, or rust. Or you can select a design with an intricate pattern for added interest and style.
Textured Brick:
Recreate the fabulous look of natural brick with wallpaper. Choose one small wall space in your kitchen for the accent. If you only wallpaper a small space, the faux brick pattern will make more of a visual impact than if you overdo the look. You can install floating shelves on the same wall to enhance the appearance and display a few kitchen accessories. Or try placing a metal or wooden holder against the wall where you can keep a few pans within easy reach.
Galaxy of Stars:
Enhance one wall of a childs room with starry wallpaper. Place it on the wall opposite the bed and include a couple of lamps on side tables or
floor lamps on each side to make this wallpaper shine. Your child will love admiring the stars from their bed.
Bold Graffiti:
Many teenagers love the look of graffiti. They can now have it in their room with graffiti wallpaper. Choose the smallest wall in the room to display these bold, colorful patterns. Many styles and designs exist that your teen can choose from for their bedroom. Stimulating graffiti art wallpaper makes a bold statement that will draw everyone's attention as soon as they see it Wallpaper makes the perfect accent in almost any home. You can use it to change the entire look and feel of a room. No matter the style of your décor, wallpaper exists that can enhance your interior at a reasonable cost. Try it in one area first as an experiment, and then add it throughout your home if you love the look. You can often do small wallpapering jobs yourself. For larger jobs, hire a professional to get the best look possible.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT It took Marcel Proust seven volumes to write Remembrance of Things Past. Writing a memoir is something most of us don’t do. Perhaps we’re too busy, or are under the impression this sort of thing is best reserved for the famous. Yet everyone is a legend—or will be—in the eyes of her own family. Genealogists are happy with just a name. Think how much more connected they would feel to find stories to go along with it. One way to reach out and touch these generations to come is to keep a birthday journal; writing just one or two pages every year is something almost everyone can do. After a while it becomes a tradition — like birthday cake and ice cream. Choose a loose-leaf binder, so you can add pages as you go. Write about the significant events in your life, as well as those which seem less so but nevertheless mean something special to you: your satisfactions, your disappointments, your hopes for the future, even the world news that most affected you—but most importantly, write about your philosophy of life. It does change, you know. Keeping a yearly journal gives you a manageable history of your own life. Taken as a whole, it is much more interesting than you probably realize. Even if you’re a recluse--you can write about that. Just think what Emily Dickinson did with her experience. But suppose you persist in
believing whatever you’re doing right now is not all that important, or you’re sure to remember it regardless? Even if you’re right, your rendering won’t be authentic. You’ll be seeing life through a different lens now. The strongest associations are what seemed incidentals at the time—the way something looked or smelled, the name of your favorite song. Every time I hear “Key Largo,” the smell of eucalyptus trees and the steamy heat of Charleston at midnight, the windows of my VW rolled down and the music blaring— are right here beside me. Then the rest comes tumbling back: the pride of my first marriage, the devastation a year later when it failed; the joy of sanding floors in an old house; the despair at leaving a town and friends I had loved; even the years I was imitating being a hippy. Sure I remember the highlights, but sometimes that is all. Put down the incidentals. Life really is in the details.
Memory is a sort of kaleidoscope — your childhood, adolescence, work, retirement and the books you have read or the movies you have seen. All of it is significant but difficult to capture; it gets scrambled up by the time many years have past and some memories invariably get pushed into oblivion. But you’re never too old to start recording them; you could live till you’re ninety or even longer—a hefty amount of years and memories still to come. In one book, in one place, you can sit down with the remembrances of your own times past. You won’t wonder where it all went; you’ll know and “You will have become the hero of your own book.”
WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS (A CLASSIC ALFRED HITCHCOCK THRILLER) ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S "THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH" Traveling on a bus to Marrakech with their son Hank, American tourists Dr. Ben McKenna (James Stewart) and his wife Jo (the late Doris Day) strike up a conversation with a rather af f able Frenchman, who asks Dr. McKenna a lot of personal questions. Something about it doesn't seem quite right. Making their way through the crowded picturesque Marrakech market square the next day, the McKennas see a man stumbling out of an alleyway. A knif e embedded in his back - jig sawing through the dense crowd toward them, is the Frenchman they met on the bus, now dressed as an Arab. Pressing a note into Dr. McKenna's hand, he gasps that the Ambassador is to be assassinated in London's Royal Albert Hall the following day. "You must stop it." Af ter giving a statement at police headquarters, the exhausted McKennas head straight to the room of an English couple who were keeping an eye on Hank. However, they've checked out of the hotel, gone back to London, and taken Hank with them. The McKennas immediately follow. Frantically entangling themselves in international intrigue, searching for Hank and trying to prevent an assassination, their hearts thumping, the McKennas f ind themselves standing behind a curtain during a symphony at London's Royal Albert Hall. And later, during a diplomatic reception at the embassy, Jo McKenna sings at a f ever pitch, almost a scream, while, at the same time, Dr. McKenna tries to find Hank, desperately running along corridors, up and down sets of stairs - all leading to a chilling end. (COMPELLING, COMPLEX AND ADDICTIVE) THE GOOD WIFE: Standing beside her husband, the State Attorney, as he resigns following the discovery of his affair with a prostitute is Alicia - embarrassed, heartbroken, insulted. To be a good wife to him, to stay at home and raise his children and enjoy doing every minute of it, to stand in the background, supporting him in his career, while giving up her own as an attorney is just too much. But Alicia is a survivor. And watching her survive is amazing.
