IS YOUR STYLE REALLY YOU? HOW TO STOP COMPARING YOURSELF AND DRESS FOR WHO YOU TRULY ARE

Written By Mary Michele Nidiffer

Style expert, Founder StyleFinder ID™ (www.stylefinderID.com) 16 | triangle style

It happens all too quickly. You wake up one day and, while going through your usual morning routine, you catch a glimpse of yourself. Yikes! Who is that woman staring back at you? While you used to think of yourself as stylish and hip, you’re shocked to see that your image is looking tired, teetering on the brink of frumpy, and you feel as if your style has evaporated into a sea of boring, nondescript black pants, baggy tops and comfy shoes. What happened? In a nutshell, life. You got busy. With work, with kids and a to-do list that’s a mile long. Yet somehow you know that stylish woman is buried down deep and you vow to find her. At different times throughout a woman’s life she seeks to reinvent her style. It may be entering a new decade, having a baby, getting a divorce, getting married, starting a new job, etc. Life changes – or just a fresh perspective – can cause you to take notice of your style. The style that once was trendy and chic has now turned into nothing more than frumpy, boring and matronly. And that makes you feel even more frumpy, boring and matronly. This attitude affects how you feel about yourself and your life, and leaves you wanting to curl up on the couch with your good buddies, Ben & Jerry. And you know deep down that’s not really who you are, but you’re at a loss as to how to get back in touch with the real you.

As a style expert, what I’ve seen happen time and again is that when women need a fashion boost, they often emulate the styles of their friends, without determining if that style is even right for them. As you try on an outfit inspired by a chic friend, you begin to compare yourself to her. When you realize that she looks much better in the outfit (or style), you may walk away with the feeling that you’re not as pretty, not as thin, not as chic, etc. Those thoughts are not the truth, but the result of comparing yourself. What is true is that that there is something else out there that’s a better choice for you! Let’s go find it! spring | 17

Bonjour Raleigh Dress/Tunic: CarloPik, Marseille Jewelry: Max Debraine, Paris Handbag: Barbara Rihl, Paris

Getting dressed and adorning yourself for who you truly are is one of life's real pleasures, yet many women never get to enjoy this experience because they’re too busy comparing themselves, berating themselves and simply feeling overwhelmed because they don’t know what to wear. As you head to your closet each day, I want you to dress for you who are, honoring what’s most important to you and showing up as your real, beautiful and authentic self. Dressing for someone else’s style can leave you feeling out of sync with yourself and confused about who you are, while wearing clothing that fits not only your body, but expresses your personality, will help you to feel confident about who you are and more comfortable in your own skin. But where to start?

FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO UNCOVER YOUR OWN STYLE AND ROCK YOUR WARDROBE • KNOW THYSELF If you don’t know what your style truly is, I want you to find out! This is a key step in determining what’s right for you (and what’s very wrong). Knowing yourself is both educational as well as empowering and can help you to show up as they woman you were created to be! My proprietary StyleFinder ID™ assessment is one great tool to help you discover your authentic style and how to create a look that’s right for you. • FIT IS KEY If you’re hiding in big, baggy clothes, you're not doing yourself any favors. Baggy clothes, as well as too-tight clothes, can make you look heavier than you really are and keep your style from standing out. Wear clothing that gently skims the body to show off your shape and helps you put your best image forward.

• ACCESSORIZE ACCORDINGLY Accessories are where you get to have some fun with our outfits and put our own personal stamp on our look. Choose accessories that

show the world who you are. Are you wild at heart with a touch of whimsy? Why not wear a colorful animal print scarf, bangle or shoes to set your look off. Are you classically elegant? Wear your best pearls, everyday! Find those items that will become your signature and let them speak for you. After all, your image speaks louder than words. • BREAK THE RULES A huge part of learning about your personal style is finding what you love and not being dictated to. Sometimes this means breaking the rules and wearing something in a way that you’re not ‘supposed to’. Learn to trust your instincts to know if something is right for you and you'll gain a true understanding of yourself. • BE CONSISTENT While your moods may be all over the map, your style should not. This doesn’t mean that you wear a uniform, but simply have a consistent style. Once you uncover what your true style is, make sure your key elements are present and work to cultivate a strategy that works for you, whether you’re dressing for the boardroom, the bedroom or the bar. When your closet is filled only with items you do love, dressing will become effortless AND enjoyable. Soon you'll begin to see a new pattern emerge, as well as a new you! Not only will you look great, but you’ll feel more like yourself, rather than like what you think you should look like. This can be a very spiritual, as well as personal, experience. When you dress who you truly are you present yourself for all to see. Let this empower you to step forward in your life and become the person you were meant to be. Your very own style will get you noticed for all the right reasons and will attract wonderful people into your life who instantly connect with the image you project. Dress like you mean it!

POND'S COLD CREAM This cold cream has been around since 1846 and has outlasted and out-shined many brands that are far more expensive and heavily marketed. This tingly, smooth cream was launched in 1914 and has been a favorite facial cleanser since. It was originally a sunburn remedy, but has since gained notoriety as a make-up remover and facial cleanser. It cuts through oil and refreshes the skin while it cleanses it, making it a great product to wake up the skin and leave it clean without over-drying. This is truly the perfect combination for those of all skin types.

YARDLEY LILY OF THE VALLEY EAU DE TOILETTE This perfume has been worn by millions of women since 1920. In the years since it has been out, dozens of uses have been discovered, from degreasing the hands, to removing hard-to-remove makeup to softening the skin before and after bathing. ask anna Hi Anna, My hands are beginning to show signs of age and it's really bothering me. My veins are much more noticeable and I have a few age spots too, is there anything I can do to reverse the aging process? -Renee There are several options for minimizing and in many instances eliminating brown Hyperpigmentation spots all together. If you choose to go the laser route, which will cost more than some other less effective options (for hands you are probably looking at around $150-$300 per laser treatment) and typically you need 3 treatments for hands. There are several laser choices for treating, but I find a combination approach of BBL or IPL with fractionated laser (like fraxel or scitons profractional) works the best, particular for dark spots on hands which tend to be more stubborn than treating spots on the face. The thing that's nice about the laser option is you get immediate results after just one treatment (and in some medical cases one treatment is all you need). Additionally that same laser can most often times have its "filter" changed and in the same session zap out any vascular issues (depending on the type of vein, laser may not be the best option), but a proper consultation with your laser medical provider and he/she should be able to give you all of your options and let you know what you are or are not a good candidate for. Another treatment option which will take longer to see results would be using a topical lightening agent, something with Hydroquinone (HQ) at 4-6%. I personally like the prescription Triluma which has HQ 4% as well as Tretinon (Vitamin A) in it. I even suggest to people receiving laser therapy to pre and post treat with this product in conjunction with the laser to provide optimal results. You will need to ask your provider how many days pre and post treatment they recommend you stop/start using Triluma as well as all other topicals. Lastly, pigmented lesions particularly on the back of hands will most definitely return if you do not apply daily a broad spectrum high level (30-50%) SPF that contains a physical UVA/UVB protection such as Zinc or Titanium Dixoide. As you most certainly would not want the money and time you spent getting rid of the spots to return simply because of lack of proper post care. Hope this helps.

RECEIVED: THE SYNERGY CUSTOMIZED FACIAL I was pampered from the moment I walked in. My experience began by relaxing in the ambient waiting room, where I sipped mint green tea and listened to soothing music. After a few minutes, my aesthetician, Bridget, led me into the facial room where she interviewed me about any issues with my skin as well as my cleansing rituals. She gave me a few minutes to undress and settle onto the facial table, which was more like a cozy bed. The bamboo sheets were the softest I had ever felt! 34 | triangle style

The room had a clinical feel to it, but still dim and relaxing. Bridget began with an initial cleanse, covered my eyes and then examined my skin under a light to get a better idea of my skin’s needs. First, I received the Glycolic Cleanser, which uses glycolic acid to prep the skin for treatment. After that, she ran a vibrating Clarisonic Cleansing Brush across my face, which uses a sonic frequency to achieve a deeper pore cleanse. For the next few minutes, Bridget focused on cleaning out every single zit and blackhead on my face in a process called “extractions.” A slightly uncomfortable, but very liberating experience! After that, she put a brightening and tightening 24k Gold Mask on my face and covered my eyes with a rubberizing eye mask, which uses marine collagen to tighten, hydrate and plump the eye area. While the mask dried, Bridget massaged my arms and shoulders. At this point, I was in that wonderful, calm state in between sleeping and waking. I really enjoyed the relaxing, herbal aromas of the mask and massage oil. After several minutes, Bridget removed the mask by simply peeling it off. Next, she delivered a stream of pressurized oxygen infused with vitamins and antioxidants directly to my face. The stream of air felt cool and rejuvenating as it hydrated and softened my skin. She then applied a little bit of tinted moisturizer, congratulated me on having my first facial and left me to get dressed. I emerged from the cozy facial bed and looked at my face in the mirror. It was like seeing a perfectly airbrushed version of myself! My skin was even, soft and glowing. In the weeks following the facial, I’m happy to say I’ve worn nothing more than a little sheer primer on my face. Instead of foundation or powder, I’m able to wear the beautiful, natural glow of my own skin with confidence! If you’re looking to take your skincare to the next level, to feel and look your best, I highly recommend the experts at Synergy Spa and Aesthetics.

THE SKIN RENEWAL CENTER AT SOUTHERN DERMATOLOGY: VISITED BY: Kristy Stevenson

RECEIVED SKIN RESURFACING THROUGH MICRODERMABRASION If you’re looking for a facial pick me up without any laser or chemical peels – or down time – consider skin resurfacing through microdermabrasion. Between work, deadlines, kids, and repeated snow days, I was starting to show a little wear and tear. But The Skin Renewal Center at Southern Dermatology (southernderm.com) offered a non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to softer, smoother and cleaner skin after just one treatment. Angie, The Skin Renewal Center Manager, talked with me about the safety and effectiveness of the procedure, evaluating my needs based on skin type and condition. She was both knowledgeable and personable, and explained everything as she went along. The office was modern and inviting, and after a quick facial cleansing,

the polishing action of diamond chips went to work on my worry lines. The exfoliation, itself, is done through a precise hand-held wand that feels very much like a cat licking you. The topmost layer of skin is whisked away, vacuumed into the suction tube of the wand, leaving behind a fresh and vibrant new you. It’s completely sterile and leaves you with a smoother texture while promoting the growth of healthy new skin cells. Angie finished with a very clean smelling sunscreen (got to protect the new delicate glow!) and moisturizer. And that was it; no residue or irritation. Twenty minutes and done! This procedure is mild enough to be repeated each month if you choose, giving you softer more supple skin and helping everyday products penetrate better. Skin will continue to improve with additional treatments. The face and neck are the most common areas treated, but you may also request the décolletage and hands, and even the arms and legs. It’s effective on virtually any type or shade of skin. If you want to do something nice for yourself, consider microderm. Starting at just $95, it’s easy on the complexion and the pocketbook. You’ll thank me when you look in the mirror.

BLOOM SKIN SPA VISITED BY: Heather Green RECEIVED: THE BLOOMING FACIAL Rarely is there ever a time when I can not find the words to describe something, but after the one-ofa-kind 75 minute Blooming facial I experienced at Bloom Spa in Cary, I was speechless! Unassuming and quaint on the outside, Bloom is undoubtedly Cary’s Best Kept Secret. From the moment you walk in, you are warmly greeted with a beverage and a relaxing atmosphere. The rooms are not the “cave-like” spaces that I’ve typically encountered in most spas, but lit with natural light in soothing surroundings and welcoming fragrances. The word “facial” simply does not do this experience justice. From the in-depth consultation to the foot massage that was included, you can’t help but walk out of Bloom relaxed and ready to take on the world! Every product used in Bloom is 100% organic, unique, effective and surprisingly affordable. One of the few “Green Certified” spas in North Carolina, Bloom goes above and beyond to operate as an eco-friendly business. Not once did I feel rushed or out of place, but rather “at-home”, almost as if I could just walk around in my robe without giving it a second thought! The products used were light and never over-powering. Part of my 10 step facial (yes, 10 wonderful steps!), included a consistent facial massage and shared techniques from the technician that I could use at home. Input was constantly welcomed as I shared my skin’s history, concerns and questions throughout the facial.

As I walked to my car, and looked into my rearview mirror, I could tell an immediate difference in my skin. I had a dewy glow and my skin felt firmer and literally looked 10 years younger. If I had an extra thumb, I would give Bloom three thumbs up – hands down, this was THE best spa experience I have ever had! TS

LAFAYETTE VILLAGE SHOP OWNERS PULL A SWITCH-A-ROO

What happens when two small business owners in the same plaza pull a switcharoo, looking at the other’s venture with a fresh set of eyes, and trading places behind the counters of their stores to learn the difference between stocking food items versus clothing and apparel? We went to Lafayette Village in North Raleigh to find out. Cheryl Reinert is the owner of Finley’s Boutique (shopfinleys.com) which offers classic and trendy styles for ladies over the age of 35. Whitney Brown, on the other hand, is the owner of The Olive Wagon (theolivewagon.com), a specialty store featuring fresh extra virgin olive oils from all around the world and 25 Star balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy. These two business models couldn’t be more different – or could they?

THE STOREFRONTS: Gigi’s Boutique opened in 2008 with Cary and Raleigh locations, striving to offer affordable and trendy clothes for a woman’s everyday style while keeping prices under $100. Their sister boutique, Finley’s, opened in 2013 and appeal to a wide audience through a classic fit. At The Olive Wagon, oils and vinegars are the heart of the business with selections as distinct and varied as prized wine. Other products include delicious handmade artisanal foods from a variety of farms and small businesses. From delicious dried fruits, jams, sauces, honey, toffee, and baked goods – everything’s made with quality ingredients. They also have a beautiful line of stoneware dishes, bakeware, and gifts.

BOTTLE THE EXPERIENCE.

taste your selection...savor the moment...

• Varietal olive oils from Spain, Italy, California & Greece • Premium 25 Star balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy • Specialty, gourmet and gluten free food items. • Stoneware, pottery, customized baskets and gift sets.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “The Olive Wagon offers flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars,” said Reinert. “The store has a warm feeling with copper colored walls and steel containers that hold all the different products. They also have a variety of unique foods from local or mom & pop growers. I personally use the balsamic vinegars for grilled veggies and salads.” “Finley’s is a woman’s boutique featuring a classic line of clothing,” said Brown. “The prices are incredible and the quality is excellent with a nice selection of separates that can transition from the work place to dinner on the town.”

Step Into Comfort This Spring

Inventory choices and seasonality come into play for both stores. Fashion is always about the next season, and olive oils are always about the next harvest and market availability. How each purchases inventory and keeps track of it is a little different, but for the most part the ladies saw more similarities than differences in their day to day operations.

WHAT THEY LEARNED: “We both work in our stores so we can get to know our customers,” said Reinert. “And we approach customer service the same by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere; we want customers to know that we are knowledgeable so they feel comfortable asking us for help.”

“We have the same kind of customer, meaning the demographic profile is very similar – discerning taste, appreciation for value, and the loyalty to ‘shop local,’” said Brown. The common theme between the two is good customer service, product knowledge and the ability to ‘read’ the customer in order to facilitate a sale. “The cornerstone of a well run business is understanding your customer, the ability to be fluid enough in your business practices to anticipate change in the market and continue to be relevant to the consumer,” said Brown. A genuine enthusiasm for what each sells is what makes the business of being in retail enjoyable for both owners.

Knowing what’s involved in determining the cost of a total product so that you can price it competitively in the marketplace,” said Reinert. She was impressed by Brown’s ability to multitask: filling an oil bottle and trying to keep it steady while giving a customer her attention and answering a question. Enjoying cooking is a help as researching and developing recipes to go with products also takes time. Knowing what looks good on a woman’s body type is totally different than knowing the different olive oils and vinegars,” said Brown. Struck by Reinert’s ability to anticipate fashion trends by making selective and specific choices so that many pieces would work together, she added, “Researching fashion styles and trying to determine what is going to be in fashion takes a different approach.”

BEST TAKEAWAY: I enjoyed sharing ideas and concerns with another small business owner,” said Reinert. “Listening to what works for them may be something that will also help your business thrive and grow in a positive direction.” And if it keeps their customers happy, then both shop owners are all for it! RALEIGH’S FIRST COLD-PRESSED JUICE COMPANY Everyone wants fast, easy ways to make healthy choices. Thanks to Raleigh siblings,

Colin Fickes and Mary Holt Collins’ fresh, organic, cold-pressed juice company, Humdinger Juice, this just got easier and a lot more delicious.

Written By Taylor Anderton Photos By Hollin Pulley

Returning Home after 13 years working as an actor in movies and tv shows like Transformers, One Tree Hill and numerous national commercials, Colin recognized a need for simplicity and health. Being in a career that taxed his mind, body and soul, he felt depleted and took stock. He realized the resources for juices that had been readily available to him in LA and NYC, weren’t as accessible in his hometown. Mary spent most of her life juggling athletics and the arts and put little focus on healthy eating. As she got older, she recognized the need for healthier habits. She jokes that she “gets clean to get dirty again”.

60 | triangle style

From riding bikes in Drewry Hills to playing in Crabtree Creek, Colin and Mary were always a close pair. As they examined their own desires to live in a more healthful way and bring that health to the hometown they both love, one year ago they launched Humdinger Juice. The philosophy behind Humdinger is simple: to deliver the purest, most nutrient dense ‘live’ juice. Humdinger is afresh, raw and 100% organically grown, cold-pressed juice company nestled in the City of Oaks. “We believe in the healing properties of these juices and in the power they have to connect you to all that’s real and good not only in you, but in the world around you. Our Mission is to provide people with a real humdinger: locally made, organic, fresh, raw and nutrient-packed juice that not only tastes great, but makes you feel great!” said Colin and Mary.

PLUM

HAIR ATELIER’S

ULTIMATE MAKEOVER

WINNER There’s no denying that Raleigh attorney, passionate volunteer, and busy mom Melissa Cleary knew how to pull together a polished and professional look when she headed to court. However, when it came to choosing business casual and weekend wear, the jury was still out. Score a big win for Cleary when she was selected for the Ultimate Makeover package from PLUM Hair Atelier during their grand opening celebration and community-wide fundraiser in support of breast cancer research. Hair stylist Ashley Collins and her talented team of beauty experts: makeup artist Ellen Geenty, stylist Kara Wilde and fashion photographer Jen Tarbox got right on the case! Written By Audrey D. Mark • Photography: Jen Tarbox Photography 62 | triangle style

CASE IN POINT As one of Collins’ long time clients, Cleary’s hair was already in great shape – but both women were excited to take this opportunity to “push the limits a little more.” As a professional, Collins feels it is always important to look at her clients and their lifestyles holistically. “The key is to find a look that works best for their face, frame, and fits in realistically with their daily routine,” she said. Cleary recently began focusing on fitness and working out more seriously; the old look was no longer working with her new slender body. After swapping pictures and talking about possibilities, Collins suggested that they explore using a more vibrant and rich red color for a little more drama, and then cut off some length and add volume for better balance.

After 14 years in Chicago, Michelle DeWitt has returned South to bring her vibrant store, Jitty's, to Raleigh. With the latest in Casual Dressing hand-picked from the New York and California Fashion Marts, Jitty's valued customers have long enjoyed Michelle's eye for style-especially her ability to personally select What's On Trend Grand and works for you!

Collins loves working with clients like Cleary because she is adventurous and open to change. The philosophy at PLUM is for stylists to educate and inspire. Collins knows that she is in charge of creating “first impressions,” and she takes that responsibility very seriously! She also knows that it’s sometimes up to her to be the catalyst and give clients the spark they need to make a change. In Cleary’s case, after the makeover was complete, she was so excited by her new lighter locks that at her next visit she went for an even shorter more dramatic and versatile pixie-like do. Both Cleary and Collins agree that the new cut is a winner.

CASE CLOSED For this makeover, makeup artist Geenty wanted to focus on looks for Cleary that would be easy for her to recreate on her own. To make sure Cleary would have the proper tools and techniques, Geenty had her bring in all of her cosmetics and brushes from home. Together they discovered that Cleary’s makeover needed to start with her cosmetics case. When it comes to makeup brushes, quality tools of the trade are important. Cleary had a bunch of brushes and products that she didn’t know how to use properly, or didn’t need. “Sure, she had a lot of choices,” Geenty said, “but they weren’t all good.” Geenty pulled out about ten quality brushes for Cleary to hold on to: for foundation, blush, shadow and a few other angled brushes for brows and shading. Geenty also likes to enlist makeup sponges for even better coverage. Next she culled Cleary’s collection of outdated cosmetics and ditched colors that just didn’t work for her anymore, if ever.

64| triangle style

Geenty pointed out the importance of choosing the right shades for the situation. For example, “To minimize redness many of us have, chose a green based foundation,” she explained. When it comes to every day, Geenty likes to work with a more natural palate. But to create a little drama, it’s best to use a shadow that is the opposite color of your eyes. Blue eyes pop with copper shadows, while green eyes glow with purple. And brown eyed gals are totally versatile. Geenty encourages her clients to be fearless, evolve, and try out new trends. A fresh look on Cleary was using liner to create an oh-so-subtle cat eye. At first, Cleary was a little nervous about stepping out of her comfort zone with it, but once she saw how much it

made her eyes brighten, she really liked it – even for everyday use. When it comes to eyes, Geenty knows the brows have it! She used powder to fill in Cleary’s brows, giving them a softer more natural look than a pencil. To create the perfect brow line and symmetry, she sometimes likes to use stencils by Ardell. For the finishing touch, however, Geenty says it’s always important to take a few steps back from the mirror and look at the overall shape you’ve created.

ORDER IN THE COURT - AND THE CLOSET “Melissa sure knows how to buy a dress,” stylist Wilde exclaimed! While Cleary’s work wardrobe was impeccable, what she really needed help with was finding her individual style for those tricky business casual days and weekends. Wilde offers a range of services to help clients weed through the clothing that they’ve already got and then teach them how to shop for what they’re missing. Her fashion forward philosophy is simple: Educate. Empower. Express.

Wilde loved working with Cleary, saying, “She is beautiful, has a great figure and she was really open to suggestions from the start.” After a body type analysis, they carefully combed through Cleary’s closet. After editing out what wasn’t working, they created what Wilde calls an Essentials List, giving the pair a written plan to shop for what was needed to round out Cleary’s wardrobe. The most liberating lesson Wilde shared with Cleary, and teaches so many of her clients so often: less is more. “Most people wear only 20 percent of their wardrobe, 80 percent of the time,” Wilde said. That leaves a lot of closet space filled with clunkers, so wardrobe editing is mandatory. “With the right accessories,” Wilde said, “you can wear the same clothes all the time, and never repeat an outfit.” spring | 65

With the Essentials List in hand, they set out to find things that were fun and fresh, but still sophisticated enough to work with Cleary’s polished personal style. They also selected a few new additions to help balance her shoe collection. Wilde discovered that Cleary has a real affinity for sparkly things. Together they found ways to add more color and incorporate a little glitter in appropriate ways to give Cleary the style that she was looking for.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE

For photographer Tarbox, one of the most exciting things about documenting this makeover was watching Cleary’s energy and self confidence escalate throughout the day. “You could actually see the transformation in her face,” Tarbox recalled. She particularly loved shooting the final outfit of the day: the sexy evening wear with dramatic nighttime makeup. At first, Cleary was a bit hesitant about being photographed. But after a few posing cues from Tarbox, she quickly caught on and was a real natural! For Tarbox, the most rewarding part of photo shoots is when women get to see their finished photos and say, “I can’t believe that’s me!” She believes that every woman deserves the chance to share their beauty and treat themselves to professional photos. “You’re worth it!” she says.

It hasn’t been easy for Cleary to find a few moments to focus on herself while striking that perfect balance between work life and family time. When it came to shopping, she didn’t have a game plan. Her business wardrobe was working for her, but when it came to the more casual corner of her closet, she’d end up just shopping for events or selecting random items off the sale racks. When Wilde was done with her closet, Cleary realized that she could get rid of almost 80 percent of what was in there; it was liberating! After her makeover from PLUM, Cleary learned a lot about what to look for and what to avoid, which will ultimately save this busy gal time, money, and stress. Armed with her Essentials List from Wilde, Cleary learned that cap sleeves

are not the best line for her arms, so now she can skip right over those when scanning her selections. She also learned that her outfits look best if she doesn’t split the look in the middle. Wilde taught the concept of 1/3 to 2/3 dressing, where the break in color or texture is highlighted at either the top third or bottom third rather than across her midline. Cleary never realized just how stressful her past shopping sprees had been. She was also thrilled to pick up a bunch of tips from Geenty about updating her beauty routine. Cleary didn’t realize that her foundation with built in SPF was giving her a shinier look than she wanted. She also learned a trick or two about the use of contouring and color. Cleary is now committed to quality over quantity when it comes to buying her beauty tools and products. As for her hair, Cleary couldn’t be happier. She loved the bold color, length and fullness Collins gave her, and now she’s loving life with her new sassy shorter cut. Just how plum was her sweet Plum makeover? The proof is in the pictures! Tarbox shared photography secrets to great portraits like not posing with your face straight to the camera, keeping your weight shifted on the leg furthest from the camera, and strategically placing a slenderizing hand on your hip. “It was a good day – a lot of fun!” Cleary said. THE COLOR C O M B I N AT I O N S FOR SPRING 2014 ARE SURE TO PLEASE

SPRING COLOR COMBINATIONS The hues being shown for Spring are lighter in intensity. They are more hints of color without being too pastel. These colors appeal to both women and men, and can be used in infinite combinations in the rooms in your home.

THE BLUE FAMILY IS BEING USED AS A NEW NEUTRAL. It is replacing the grey family as a color to use liberally in your living spaces. Pale shades of blue add "life' to transition spaces and work well with almost every accent color. Pair blue with shades of mango, cayenne, and Benjamin Moore’s coral. 'BREATH OF FRESH AIR' (806)

ACCENT COLORS Benjamin Moore’s 'Flint' AF-560

Benjamin Moore’s “Captivating Teal” (649)

Benjamin Moore’s “Supple Pink” 2007-50

Benjamin Moore’s “Dark Salmon 2009-30

An emerging color is one that has been softened and used liberally for walls, in fabrics, rugs and wallpapers. The color is a softened version of teal...which is a combination in itself because Teal uses both blue tones and green tones. It is replacing the "Seaglass" colors that have been so prominent in the past five years. Teal tones are not clear as Seaglass, and are wonderful to use as a foundation color.

TIP FOR THE NEW TEAL: Use for walls and floors, then punch up the room with a few teal accents.

PANTONE 2014 COLOR OF THE YEAR, RADIANT ORCHID. This red-purple is a bit intense. In its place, designers been using softer, more livable, tones from the purple family. First, let it be said that no one is "neutral" in their opinion of using purples in their living spaces. This color family either has fans or those who will avoid it. To select a color that will mesh well with the new spring colors, and that is livable for a long time, select more subtle tones, such as light plums or soft lavenders. These shades of purples are blue based, and thus don't have the intensity of the red based purples. Just as with any color scheme Benjamin Moore’s for your living spaces, let one color “Spring dominate. Use this for the room's Flowers” foundation. Then use accent colors (1430) to add life and focal points in the room. After the cold and snowy winter we have had in the Triangle, the spring color trends are truly a "breath of fresh air"!

IS YOUR HOUSE READY FOR ITS INTERVIEW? HOW TO PUT YOUR HOUSE ON THE HOT SEAT IN A HOT MARKET

The Real Estate market in the Triangle is HOT this spring! With home values on the increase, low spring inventory and the Raleigh area ranked by Forbes as the #2 Most Desirable City to live, work and raise children…now is the time to list your home and get it sold. But how do you start? Imagine interviewing for your dream job. Now imagine what you need to do to prepare for that interview: update your resume, choose a perfect outfit, paint your nails, shower and then put it all together with a smile and personality. Getting your home ready to put on the market is really no different; in fact, it is exactly like being interviewed…you gotta put your best foot forward. We are The Bombeck Sisters, two bloggers who talk about local places, people, hot topics and anything on-trend injected with a bit of humor and creativity. We also have a winning formula for selling homes quickly. Though not real estate agents, between us, we have had impressive results selling multiple homes within days of an open house. So, with that in mind, let’s talk shop! Just like the job interview, it starts with:

LANDING THE INTERVIEW WITH THE RESUME: Pictures of your home on flyers and MLS act as your home’s resume. A resume can either pique interest or get your home tossed in the “no” pile. The best time to take pictures of a home is in the spring when everything is bright, blooming and green. Even if you’re planning to list in summer or fall, take your pictures NOW. Don’t forget pictures of the neighborhood amenities…buyers not only look at homes, but also, their surroundings. 70 | triangle style

- WRITTEN BY THE BOMBECK SISTERS -

MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION: The outside of your home IS the first impression. If buyers don’t like the outside, they won’t get out of the car, so make it look neat, clean and welcoming. Keep the yard mowed and trimmed. Plant flowers in planters on the front porch. Paint your front door. Purchase a new welcome mat and repair or replace front door hardware. The door handle is the first thing buyers touch so you don’t want it grungy and broken. New hardware is like jewelry – make it sparkle. TAKE A SHOWER: When you think you’ve cleaned enough, clean more. The kitchen and baths will make or break a sale, so make everything SHINE baby! Steam clean the grout and shower doors. Re-caulk. Get the hair out of drains and hide the wet soap and shampoo bottles...nobody wants to picture you in the shower. Update with new bath mats and towels tied with ribbon. In the kitchen, clear out the fridge and set the oven for auto-clean. Regrout. Pack away the ceramic rooster, your beloved shot glass collection, clear the counter tops and replace cabinet and sink hardware –

remember, this is the jewelry – make it sparkle!

PUT ON SOME MAKE UP: A little makeup can go a long way…let’s face it, it smooths the wrinkles and hides the age spots. The same is true of paint on walls. Painting is the fastest and cheapest way to give your home a fresh makeover. The color you choose is critical…must be fresh, on trend and neutral. These four paints from Benjamin Moore are surefire neutrals we love. You will, too!

POP IN A BREATH MINT… Please! Just like bad breath can stifle an interview, the smell of a home kill a sale. We love critters, but kick kitty to the curb (or to your mother-in-law’s) along with the litter box, guinea pigs and dogs. Refrain from cooking fish and using the cumin and curry spices. closets, open the windows and air everything out. Fresh air is better than trying to mask odor with deodorizers…the underlying funk always shines through.

CHOOSE THE OUTFIT: Your home is being interviewed and scrutinized, therefore, clearing out, staging and accessorizing is crucial. Rent a storage unit, have a yard sale or take your stuff to mother’s, but get at least 30% of it out of your house and garage. ALL family photos, the spoon collection and the kid’s artwork must go. Staging should showcase space and potential. Therefore, move furniture away from walls into cozy sitting areas and limit accessories to new bed spreads, new rugs and new hardware.

SMILE: A smile can go a long way in an interview. Make your house smile by cleaning the windows, fan blades and chandeliers. Make it sparkle by replacing light bulbs, adding additional light to darker areas and adding up-lights in corners and behind large pieces of furniture. DON’T CRY: Taking the “home” out of your house can be emotional. So, say goodbye to your home before you start clearing. Have a family dance party in every room making that your last memory. GET THE JOB: After the exhaustion of clearing, cleaning, storing and tossing is over…it’s actually not over. You have to keep it this way until it sells…yay, fun!! So, the more work you can get done in the beginning, the less you have to do to maintain before you get an offer. So until then, keep calm, have a glass of wine (or two) and a big slab of chocolate…you deserve it! TS

IN WHAT WAYS IS RENAISSANCE DENTAL CENTER UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST IN TECHNOLOGY?

WHAT KIND OF PROTOCOL DO DENTISTS USE TO KEEP UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST DENTISTRY PRACTICES?

When you seek care at our office, you can be assured that we utilize the latest in technology to enhance the quality of your dental treatment. We find that using high power loupe magnification and LED lighting enables us to create dental restorations with incredibly precise fit and finish. We find that you cannot fulfill this level of care with just the naked eye. Utilizing intraoral camera technology allows our practice to view clear, magnified images of your mouth, teeth and gums. With these images, we are able to see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations. By using digital imaging instead of traditional xrays, we find that this decreases exposure times and increases the amount of valuable diagnostic information needed. We also use the Sirona XG3D, a 3D xray scan, that gives us a detailed threedimensional view of the teeth and jaws. This information is vital in comprehensive diagnosis, guided implant planning and placement, sleep apnea and root canals.

Continuing education is the best way to keep up to date on the latest dentistry practices. In North Carolina, a dentist is required to take at least 15 hours of CE each year. Our practice, however, takes hundreds of hours each year to ensure that we are able to implement the most up to date materials and procedures for our patients.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ELECTRIC AND SONIC TOOTHBRUSHES? There are a number of “electric” toothbrushes on the market, but the only one we recommend is the Sonicare electric toothbrush. This brush is based on innovative patented sonic technology. And, Sonicare guarantees healthier gums and cleaner, whiter teeth in just two weeks of use!

SHOULD EVERYONE BE USING A POWERED TOOTHBRUSH? YES!! Young and old, there really is not anyone that cannot benefit from a Sonicare toothbrush. We have a few different models in our office that we would be happy to review with anyone wanting to learn more about its benefits.

IT'S HELPFUL TO KNOW WHAT BRANDS THE PROFESSIONALS USE. WITH THAT BEING SAID, DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BRAND OF TOOTHPASTE OR MOUTHWASH? We love Crest Complete and Colgate Total toothpastes and rinses. For anyone that has sensitivity, we recommend staying away from whitening toothpastes because they tend to be more abrasive. In regards to mouthwashes, we recommend anything that is alcohol-free. There are also some professional brands we recommend for patients that suffer from periodontal disease or dry mouth, which we can provide within our office at your next appointment.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS A WHITER SMILE? DO YOU FAVOR ONE METHOD OVER ANOTHER? There is now research supporting the improvement of enamel after bleaching! Who knew?! Research now shows that any bleaching agentcontaining fluoride reduced cavity susceptibility. Our office recommends Opalescence gels which contain both potassium nitrate and fluoride to not only help strengthen your teeth, but also prevent sensitivity. The best way to whiten your teeth professionally is still a “low and slow” technique. Professionally made bleaching trays, worn with a low strength gel for a few weeks, is the safest and most effective way to bleach your teeth. There are in-office techniques that are helpful as a “jump start” to whitening your teeth, however, all of them still recommend that you wear trays after the procedure. One of the best products I have seen on the market is called Opalesence Boost by Ultradent. This is a power bleaching gel that offers a brighter whiter smile after just 40 minutes in the dental chair and requires no lights or lasers. Our patients bring in their trays and have the treatment completed while relaxing in our massage chair!

All new patients have the option to have a FREE take home whitening system after their first appointment in our office! We are also offering the in-office Boost treatment for only $50 (with existing bleaching trays)! Give us a call today- our patients love us, and you will too!

RENAISSANCE HAS DONE MANY SMILE MAKEOVERS. IS THERE ONE IN PARTICULAR THAT STANDS OUT? Yes! We just had a patient come in that had not been to the dentist in over 10 years. He had chipped, stained, and broken down teeth that desperately needed updating. We were able to help him achieve his new smile with a combination crowns, veneers and fillings. We look forward to finishing his smile by completing the lower arch in the next few weeks! Here is a before and after picture to give you an idea of the transformation:

IN THESE TRYING TIMES, WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE WHO MIGHT NEED A LITTLE FINANCIAL HELP? Our primary goal is to not allow the cost of treatment to prevent you from benefiting from the quality of care you need or desire. In our office, we strive to maximize your dental insurance benefits and make any remaining balance easily affordable. We do offer a number of payment plans, cash discounts, and discounts for our military and senior citizen patients. We find that patients love the option of using CareCredit as well, which is a patient payment program offering a full range of no interest and extended payment plans.

aging gracefully Written By Lou Scott

I had an old-fashioned kitchen in mind. A cheerful 1940s Betty and Bobby kitchen, one with flouncy curtains, a red checkered tablecloth, milk white cupboards and bright yellow walls was what I wanted. However, it was a booth, one that overlooked a window box with red geraniums inside, that was the necessity. A welcoming kitchen, one people felt comfortable in, that was my inspiration. The kitchen in my 1926 Sears Foursquare house was anything but welcoming. And though I realized the first time I saw it that it was quite small, had misshapen angles and an unsightly support beam, I didn’t pay close attention. For I had already been charmed by the home’s winding brick walkway, sparkling white exterior, the bright yellow asters in the green window boxes and the sweet bench by the front door. After settling in, I went from one kitchen center to another. It wasn’t long before I realized I could not have the kitchen of my dreams, not in my house and not on my budget. As a solution, as the years passed by, I simply made a point to grow used to it, to direct my focus elsewhere, away from the unsightly beam and the room’s awkward corners. But one day I caught the expression in someone else’s eyes and I felt sick: just plain embarrassed. Late the next morning, I reached for the phone and called a custom kitchen company, one whose specialty was exquisitely built period designs. “We take a kitchen from concept to installation,” the man who answered the phone said. “Is this what you have in mind?”

76 | triangle style

“No, I just want someone to take a look at my kitchen. I need some advice.” “I’ll have someone call you,” and then he promptly hung up. A week later someone did call. “Tell me about your house,” he said. “It’s a little house -- the type of house someone’s grandmother would live in. You can walk everywhere, to the store, the library around the corner, and the museum not much farther away. There’s even a church a few blocks down. Nonetheless, the house doesn’t feel as if it’s in a city, because it’s tucked away on cul de sac with lots of trees. Plus, the neighborhood has a friendly feeling.” Hesitating for a moment or two, he agreed to come by. When I opened the front door, my first impression was of an English country gentleman who had come calling. To the contrary however, he was thorough and precise: measuring and checking out the electrical, plumbing and heating systems. “Do you object to moving that heat register in the middle of the floor and putting it under the window?” “Would you like to have a pantry? A dishwasher? Room for spices, pots and pans? A cupboard with slots for muffin tins and cookie trays? Anything I’ve missed?” “A small booth in front of the long window if possible and a microwave somewhere other than over the stove. A washer/dryer would be nice. I’m not especially fond of going outside in the cold to get to the basement. “No, we can’t have that. That just won’t do.”

“But you’d only have room for a single booth, a chair pulled up to give extra seating. And we could build a glass display case for you to see when you’re having a cup of tea. It could go all the way from the top of the counter to the ceiling and have a focus light inside shine through glass shelves below. And if we moved the window by the driveway to the corner, you could see it through the glass, which would also give you more light and a pretty view.”

FITTING THE NEEDS OF WOMEN FOR OVER 30 YEARS

“As far as what to do about that beam, I will have to think it over for a few days and then send you a conceptual drawing. The drawing turned out to be more than four pages of the entire kitchen, including measurements, electrical, plumbing and heating improvements. Moving a wall over seven inches in the foyer made room for a European style washer/dryer behind two five paneled doors, even extra room for the pantry inside the kitchen itself. Everything had been carefully planned. The dishwasher was only 18 inches wide; the microwave was in a small hutch, which faced the stove and kept it out of view, and the new sink, slightly larger than a prep sink, was in the corner by the new window. The window took the entire space, coming all the way to the counter, which provided a bigger view of the tree-lined street, as well as lots of sunshine for window pots of red geraniums. The unsightly beam, no longer seen, along with false beams that had been put around the perimeter of the room, gave the illusion of a high ceiling in the middle. Pale yellow cupboards, bright yellow walls, a red spindled chair, fluffy curtains, and it all came together: a welcoming, charming and comfortable kitchen. In the middle of the night, I still creep down the stairs just to admire it. The Englishman, oh what a designer, had given me far, far more than the kitchen I thought I could never have.

Asparagus and sweet shrimp roasted to perfection complement the creaminess of the risotto. Fresh parmesan and lemon zest add just the right finishing touch. Serve as a main dish alongside a salad of fresh greens dressed in a lemon vinaigrette or leave out the shrimp and serve as a side with roasted lamb or broiled salmon.

movie night Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

Philomena is a truly wonderful film. One of those rare films that takes a tragic story and doesn’t play it for all it’s worth. Instead it mixes joy with humor, tragedy with triumph of the human spirit and it does so with honesty and grace. It’s Philomena’s story but it also belongs to Martin Sixsmith, the investigative journalist who helped Philomena search for Anthony, the son who was taken from her by the nuns at Sean Ross Abbey in Ireland and handed over to a woman from America who had come to adopt a little girl and then decided to take Anthony along too. Philomena’s story begins in the Ireland of the 1950s, when unwed mothers such as she were sent to a convent where they not only gave birth to their child but were well-schooled in the shame of their “sin” as well. And after their child was born, they were expected to work for four years to pay for their “maternal care,” if you would like to call Philamena’s difficult delivery an example of maternal care. But to have to watch over her child, from the time he was born until he was adopted, was just horrendous. For when Anthony was a baby, Philomena sang him lullabies; when he was one, she watched him take his first steps; and when he was three, she got down on the floor and played with him. Then one day she looked out of a window on the upstairs landing and saw Anthony standing in the backseat of a strange car, looking up at her, as it drove away. As Martin Sixsmith discovered, Philomena’s story did not end there. Even though its bittersweet ending found me crying, it was with a quiet joy, yet one so very tender. For Journalist Martin Sixsmith, who wrote The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and A Fifty Year Search, I felt immensely grateful. EAST OF EDEN Winning the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Cal, this was the role that catapulted James Dean into the icon of the sensitive, misunderstood, overwrought and brooding young man. When the film begins, prior to World War I, Cal has just discovered his mother is not dead, as his father had told him and his brother Aron. She is still very much alive, living in Monterey, earning her living by running a brothel. And she isn’t the least bit sorry, for her marriage to Adam, listening to his prayers, living in the farming 80 | triangle style

community of Salinas, had exacerbated her already restless spirit. Cal fears he is “bad like his mother. Why can’t he good like Aron?”. Adam wonders the same thing, for Cal is always getting in one sort of trouble or another. However, when Adam’s vegetable crop fails, Cal decides to buy some land, so he can grow beans; he thinks there will be a great profit in them if war comes. When it does come, Cal proudly hands Adam the profit. This, he is sure, will make his father love him every bit as much as he already loves Aron. But Adam, a respected member of the community’s war effort, says he doesn’t want any part of Cal’s money. Aron’s modest gift, he says, pleases him so much more. Painfully jealous, Cal takes Aron to “meet” their mother. You know the story: it’s always worth the retelling. THE BISHOP’S WIFE If you would like something light, an old-fashioned romantic comedy for instance, you can’t go wrong by letting Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven entertain you. Voted Best Picture in 1948, this film, about a Bishop, his wife, and an angel who answers the Bishop’s call for guidance is downright charming. The sort of guidance Bishop Henry Brougham has in mind is his difficulty in raising money for a new cathedral. When an angel, who looks like an ordinary man, answers his call, he sees the help the Bishop really needs is more is in the realm of the spiritual. To focus on his failing marriage to Julia, to minister to the souls of his congregation, that is what’s really important. And as far as raising money to build a new cathedral goes, it would be much better spent on the poor. Because the Bishop his lost his spiritual footing, Julia wonders if her sadness is temporary or an omen of worse things to come. The Bishop isn’t the only one who needs help. When the angel sees Julia sitting on a park bench, watching men and women skate hand in hand, he offers her his arm and off they go, dancing in circles on the ice. Julia says she hasn’t been this happy in a very long time. Apparently neither has the angel. When the Bishop later sees how happy they look together,he tells the angel it’s time for him to go home. He is now quite aware of the sort of guidance he has needed.
