WHAT IS ONE THING THAT TOOK YOU SO LONG TO DISCOVER? That time is your most precious, treasured, and non-renewable resource and yet, we tend to waste a lot of it. LAST BOOK READ AND WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT? The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The book was an ingenious weaving together of storylines that brought light to horrific, shocking injustices young men suffered during the 1960s at a reform school in Tallahassee, Florida. It can be triggering for some people and in some places, but it’s a must read. CURRENT SONG ON REPEAT? My Love - Florence + The Machine; her new album just came out, so naturally that’s all I’m listening to right now. DESCRIBE YOUR GO TO OUTFIT? I am either working with dogs, spending time outdoors, or doing hot yoga, so my go-to outfit is generally whatever is most comfortable, a cute tee, jeans/yoga pants, and a favorite pair of tennis shoes. ONE RESTAURANT YOU WANT TO TRY THIS SUMMER? Garland! I’ve heard so many people say such dynamite things about the food and experience, but we just never seem to get there. MOST USED APP ON YOUR PHONE? Spotify

WHAT IS CURRENTLY ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND? Lots of books, including The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU ARE MOST CHALLENGED BY? Overwhelm! I tend to stuff a lot into my days and I have to constantly remind myself to break tasks or projects up into smaller, bite sized bits in order to feel accomplished and keep from being overwhelmed by my to do list! THREE THINGS YOU WANT TO DO THIS SUMMER IN RALEIGH? Check out the sunflowers at Dorothea Dix Park, have our sixth wedding anniversary at our favorite restaurant Soca, and finally get a chance to kayak down parts of the Neuse River! WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE SNACK? This is going to sound so strange, but I have an addiction to dried mango slices. They are a perfect snack that I can’t get enough of! WHAT IS ONE HACK SWEAR BY? Stay hydrated. Many things we experience throughout our day–fatigue, headaches, irritability, inability to focus–can stem from being dehydrated. I carry a huge bottle of water around everywhere I go!

THE SILK SCARF

THE NEUTRAL TWO-PIECE SET A two-piece set can work together, or as separate pieces. Basic silhouettes like cropped, off-the-shoulder, and strapless tops, can be paired with highwaist denim, shorts, sarongs, and virtually anything. The bottoms are also easy to style too: skirt, short, and pants will always be in constant rotation for your trip. WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS ELLIOT LAUREN TWO PIECE? AVAILABLE AT SMITTEN BOUTIQUE DURHAM THESMITTENBOUTIQUECOM

Takes such little space and packs a style punch. Scarves can be worked as a belt, bag accent, head band, necktie, and so on. If the length and width allows; a silk scarf can double as a cool halter top.

THE DENIM JACKET For the cool summer nights, a denim jacket looks great with literally anything! Pick a sweet cropped cut style, that is a light color.

get packing.. It’s time to travel again! Choose items that give the most wear, and style options. Classic silhouettes and beautiful color! TENNIS SHOES Style multi tasking at its finest, cute and comfortable. nothing is more essential and easy to style than a pair of classic tennis shoes. Perfect for any summer outting or outfit. WE LOVE THE VINTAGE HAVANA SNEAKERS AND THE KASEY MODAL V-NECK TEE. BOTH AVAILABLE AT LILYMAES. WWW.LILYMAES.COM

DESIGNER TEE A designer tee with great quality is hot and trendy. Pair it with leather, denim, or any textile, and watch your style upgrade instantly. A designer tee is chic; pick a size up, and wear it loosely tucked in, bloused, or knotted.

Summer Beauty

Summer Scent The Rosy Blend You need a light, breezy scent that doubles up your summer game. If you're crazy about petrichor, you've got to try this fragrance! Replica When the Rain Stops Eau de Toilette is all about wet grassy rosy feels due to its keynotes Aquatic Accord, Rose Petal & Pine Needle. It takes you down the memory lane where you spent days playing in the yard when it rained and we are totally sold!

SUNSCREEN This sunscreen created a buzz in the skincare industry due to its chemical and mineral ingredients. This zinc oxide-based formula also has the incredible Hyaluronic acid that hydrates your skin thoroughly. Not only this but EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 also has the free-radical-fighting vitamin E, which gives your skin the ultimate shine and glow and maximum protection from harmful rays.

LIP COLOUR THE SUMMER LIPS Now the summer is here; it's time to leave behind your dark lips shades (just don't throw them away!) Light, bright, warm shades are the \purest colors of summer that can take the heat and look alluring! ALL HAIL BRONZER – THE SUNKISSED LOOK Let's be honest, we might hate summer's callous Sun, but we all love the sunkissed look. Instead of going out for a natural sunkissed face, you can have the desired look with a touch of bronzer on your face. Benefit Hoola - classic yet contemporary, the award-winning bronzer gives the perfect matte finish with its soft powdery formula.

TINTED MOISTURIZER – SAY HELLO TO LIGHT SUMMERY COVERAGE Do you envy women who can come out 'bare face' with flawless skin? Well, there is a secret behind that 'bare face.' A tinted moisturizer! You will love the relatively new line of makeup that the Goddess Rihanna has introduced! This Eaze Drop Blurring Skin tinted moisturizer is the latest obsession for light coverage lovers! It is a pretty much build-able formula that smoothes out your skin flawlessly!

< NARS Lipstick in Tolède is that perfect light shade that goes with every summer outing.

TRIANGULAR AND ATHLETIC will benefit from structured bust styles, and ‘stringy’ style tie-closures. Women with a smaller bust also have a variety of options in tops to choose from. Bandeau, triangle, and center embellished tops are sweet; and look great in bikini and V-neck styles. Strapless styles are also flattering on slender body types, and can feature quirky conversational prints. Again, balance it the key. Certain scenic or graphic print styles will draw attention in ways that are unflattering. Graphics that are centered and minimal will give an alluring style vibe.

SWIMSUITS FOR ALL BODIES Choosing the right swimwear can be a sensitive and daunting task. We have a few tips that will embrace what you have and find what flatters.

CURVY FIGURE Look for more of a vintage swimwear style. Skirted bottoms, gathered bralettes, and halters are flattering, and come in two and one-piece high-waist cuts. Flounced details and geometric patterns are nice, and help to elevate the retro chic look. Stay away from restrictive details like heavy metal accents, since they tend to be uncomfortable or distracting to the wearer. When it comes to patterns; be sure to choose ones

that are consistent, such as polka dot, floral, checkered, and houndstooth. Solid colored swimwear, and neutral tones also look great, on curvy body types.

HI ANNA, I WAS GIVEN A $500 GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR MOTHERS DAY AND NOW LOST ON HOW TO BEST USE IT. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND A FACIAL AND PRODUCTS? OR SHOULD I PUT IT TOWARDS SOMETHING BIGGER LIKE A LASER TREATMENT OR INJECTABLES? I AM TRAVELING THIS SUMMER, (FINALLY!!!) AND IDEALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SOFTEN THE LINES AND GET A LITTLE COLOR BACK! THANK YOU SO MUCH - JENNIFER

Hi Jennifer– lucky you! Someone special in your life knows what they’re doing! If you’re looking for a treatment you can do this summer, I’d recommend putting that giftcard towards injectables or PDO Threads for smoothing and lifting. Botox® will forever be our holy grail when it comes to de-wrinkling. This treatment is quick with very minimal downtime: you’ll see brighter smoother skin after two weeks and these results will last three to four months. Botox® is great in the forehead, around the eyes or between the brows and can leave you with a more refreshed appearance. PDO Threads, on the other hand, can be used in many different places around the face and can help with smoothing the skin or even helping to add lift and structure. Threads have gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and for good reason! They are very well tolerated in the skin, with results lasting up to a year, and they even promote the production of your body’s own collagen as they dissolve. Both of these options have very minimal downtime and Anna Churchill is the are safe to do during founder of Synergy Spa the sunniest months of & Aesthetics with two the year! As always, locations in Raleigh. She also teaches the best thing to do is corrective makeup and to come in for a consulinnovative skin care to dermatologists, tation with an experienced plastic surgeons, medical provider so that we aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. can customize a specific plan Email your questions to based on your skin. Enjoy! – Anna askanna@trianglestyle.com

TOP 5 PATIOS IN THE TRIANGLE TO ENJOY THIS SUMMER. I’m so excited patio season is upon us! There’s nothing I love more than dining al fresco or enjoying a cold glass of wine while soaking in the sun somewhere local.

Anna Haddock www.thecoffeetableblog.com follow on instagram.com @annakhaddock

WHISKEY KITCHEN

Location: Downtown Raleigh, 201 W Martin St. This is arguably the prettiest outdoor patio in all of Downtown Raleigh. I’m in awe of the magical feel of the rows of rows of string lights every. single. time. Besides having a beautiful outdoor ambiance, Whiskey Kitchen has the most delicious selection of food and cocktails. Not to mention an incredible whiskey selection of course. This iconic Raleigh restaurant has a very cool, hip feel. Hanging out on the patio makes you feel like a true local no matter how long you’ve been here! MUST-HAVES: The Fried Chicken Sandwich is a must. Leave room for dessert—you don’t want to miss the famous Shoo Fly Pie!”

WYE HILL KITCHEN & BREWING

Location: Downtown Raleigh. 201 S Boylan Ave. If you’re looking for outdoor dining with incredible Raleigh skyline views and delicious eats, look no further than Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing! I am so happy this spot came to be a few years back. The owners are absolutely wonderful and I love the passion they have for this local spot. This is one of my favorite places to bring friends visiting the Triangle. Who doesn’t love a restaurant with views am I right? I love Wye Hill’s fun, casual feel. Cozy vibes all year long. One try and you’ll be coming back all Summer! MUST-HAVES: Start with the deviled eggs for sure. Next, order the burger. Then wash it all down with one of their delicious brews. Repeat.

NAMU

Location: Durham. 5420 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. Okay, I slept on this incredible spot for far too long!!! I am so glad I finally learned about it. Where Korean Heritage, Food Truck Ingenuity, and the Local Community meet. Delicious Fare, Cold Brews, and Deep Roots. One of my favorites things about Namu is how it is a great choice no matter time of day. They have a wonderful menu of coffee drinks from Cold Brew to Traditional Macchiatos to get your day started and a mouth-watering menu to enjoy in the garden. Yes, you read that right, GARDEN. Namu’s patio is a beautiful oasis. So beautiful that they even host weddings! Enjoy fresh air and beautiful greenery as you sip a cappucino or devour Bibimbap. MUST-HAVES: For my perfect lunch at Namu, I’d order an iced latte, Kimchi Bul-fries, and Bo’s Special!

EASTCUT SANDWICH BAR Location: Durham. 3211 Old Chapel Hill Rd.

This neighborhood hangout is one of my favorite sandwich spots in the Triangle. I am always on the hunt for a great Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and this one is oh so good. Also, I have this thing with curly fries (I personally think they shouldn’t be so hard to come by, ugh!) so it is very exciting that they’re serving them up here at Eastcut Sandwich Bar. Located close to Downtown Durham, this is a great casual spot to hang with family and friends before a day exploring the city! They have a large area of covered outdoor seating with a section that has water, utensils, napkins, etc. to prevent having to go in and out a million times to get everything you need. This is a wonderful option if you want something with a lowkey feel and lots of outdoor space! They’re also gluten-free friendly. We love to see it! MUST-HAVES: I adore their Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and curly fries. 10/10 recommend grabbing whatever frozen cocktail concoction they have as well!

PECK & PLUME

Location: Downtown Cary. 301 S Academy St.

Peck and Plume is where those of a feather come to roost. Peck & Plume, located within Mayton Inn in Downtown Cary, is where all my interior design dreams come true. I know we’re talking outdoor patios here, but I have to brag on their gorgeous interior. Definitely do a deep dive on their website to see what I’m talking about. Here you’ll find a delectable menu delivering different selections throughout the day. Their focus is new American classics, but drawing inspiration from near and far. From morning through evening, their breezy terrace awaits. MUST-HAVES: Mayton Inn Mimosas and the Duck Quesadilla. YUM.

5 Healthy BBQ Foods for Summer

Make your get-togethers around the grill a bit healthier but still delicious.

MEAT AND VEGGIES SKEWERS Food on a stick is fun. Skewers are colorful and delicious as well! Think of it like this. Instead of grilling yourself a rib-eye, cut the meat into cubes and alternate it with chunky red onions, cherry tomatoes, zucchini and bell peppers on a bamboo skewer. You still get to enjoy that meaty steak, but you’re eating veggies, too, and they come out beautifully charred and smoky from the grill. Enjoying red meat is okay, if that’s your thing, but there are more creative ways of cooking it than just flipping and slicing. CORN ON THE COB There’s no doubt the best way to cook corn on the cob is over a sizzling griddle, especially if fueled by burning embers. The smell! And that golden color! Corn is hard to beat. Well, corn is healthy too, much more than a sausage. Add corn on the cob to your grilling repertoire, and you’ll be filling up on healthier alternatives without missing out on the smoky and charred flavor we all love.

CHICKEN AND SEAFOOD What’s unhealthy about all-out BBQ extravaganzas is all that saturated fat in red meat. And although switching to lean meat cuts like the tri-tip roast, strip steak and tenderloin is already a good idea; you can take things further with chicken and seafood. Grilled chicken is juicy and smoky, and seafood is really something special when cooked over an open flame. Well, both poultry and seafood are way healthier than red meat, and, if you ask us, you won’t be missing on flavor. Besides, you’re giving alternatives to your guests, taking your grilling party to the next level. HEALTHIER BURGER PATTIES We know you don’t want to hear this, but burgers are not particularly healthy, and it’s because they’re rarely made with high-quality meat. The good news? We’re living in a golden era for plant-based burger patties — you can’t even tell the difference. From burgers made with lentils and chickpeas to black bean patties, there’s plenty to choose from, so find the right one for you. As a bonus, use artisan, whole-grain buns instead of the regular ones, and you’ll already be making your burgers ten times healthier. White bread adds little to no nutrition to your system. At least wholegrain buns will add some fiber, vitamins and minerals to your diet.

SALADS - One of the healthiest food categories — salads. And we know what you’re thinking. No one wants salad when they can have a few juicy slices of smoked brisket on their plate, but that’s the point, salads are no substitute for meat; they’re complements. If only salad occupied one-third of your plate, you’d already be eating healthier, even if the rest of your food is greasy and starchy. Salads can help you feel satisfied sooner, too, and that means fewer hotdogs for you.Salads aren’t dull either, mix and match leafy greens with dried fruit, nuts and crumbly cheese for vibrant salads everyone will want to repeat. Sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and olives can give your salad personality. Don’t overlook salad, and your BBQ experience will already be healthier than last year! Happy grilling!

ROAD TRIP

10 THINGS TO SEE & DO IN WILMINGTON

BE DAZZLED BY SPRING BLOOMS FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA There’s nothing quite like springtime on the North Carolina coast when spring blooms bedazzle landscapes with azaleas, tulips and other perennials. With 67 acres of formal coastal gardens, Airlie Gardens is a veritable showcase of botanical color. Other stunning gardens with spring blooms include: Greenfield Lake Park which is surrounded by azaleas and ancient cypress trees. The Arboretum of New Hanover County features seven acres of theme gardens. In historic Wilmington, three house museums feature elegantly manicured period gardens: Bellamy Mansion Museum (Victorian), BurgwinWright House (colonial) and Latimer House (Victorian). A horse-drawn carriage ride through Wilmington’s historic district affords a peek into manicured gardens of private residences. Oakdale Cemetery beckons with its landscaped gardens and funerary art. Carolina Beach State Park and Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden feature carnivorous plants, including the rare Venus flytrap which only grows natively within a 75-mile radius. In Wrightsville Beach, Harbor Way Gardens is a quiet oasis of native plants and flowers. The 75th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival (April 6-10) kicks off the season with home and garden tours, a parade and street festival, live music, fireworks, and azaleas at every turn!

BE “OTTERLY” CAPTIVATED AT THE N.C. AQUARIUM AT FORT FISHER The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher’s “Otters on the Edge” habitat features a furry family of Asian small-clawed otters. These high-energy and curious creatures explore their surroundings, swim in their pools and are “otterly” delightful to observe as they discover new ways to play. The otters are on habitat daily from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., though times may vary. While in Kure Beach take in all its natural beauty when you walk along the shoreline of Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and hike along its Basin Trail. Breathtaking vistas are also found at Fort Fisher State Historic Site, Kure Beach Oceanfront Park, and the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. EXPERIENCE WILMINGTON’S AWARDWINNING RIVERWALK Discover why the Wilmington Riverwalk was voted as the #2 Best Riverwalk in the nation, according to USA TODAY’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice contest. A stroll along the pedestrian-friendly, 1.75-mile Riverwalk includes new amenities along the northern riverfront that

further enhance and complement the vibrant historic riverfront. The city’s North Riverfront Park welcomes visitors with an open-air worldclass concert venue managed by Live Nation. TRY A NEW RESTAURANT OR SAMPLE SEVERAL Several new eateries have opened in Wilmington’s unique neighborhoods. On Wilmington’s Riverwalk, Sauce’d specializes in cocktails, fries, and beautiful sunsets. In the Brooklyn Arts District, Three10 restaurant highlights seafood and vegetable-centric dishes and The Kitchen Sink serves creative soups and sandwiches. The Getaway Café + Provisions in River Lights serves breakfast and lunch in a casual atmosphere. Taste Carolina’s Wilmington Downtown Tasting Tour provides a unique way to sample savory and sweet tastings at 5-6 restaurants. STAY ORIGINAL AT CAROLINA BEACH Good times and laid-back vibes are in store for visitors to Carolina Beach. As you cruise into Carolina Beach you feel the high energy that radiates from the colorful buildings, boardwalk-lined beach, friendly residents, and vibrant new murals. Art for wALL is a community project that celebrates the area’s diversity and eclectic history through beautiful murals that depict life in Carolina Beach. Eight new murals painted by local artists welcome visitors to the

beach. While you’re on the island, enjoy a stroll along the iconic Carolina Beach Boardwalk and a hike at Carolina Beach State Park Book a scenic cruise aboard Salty Ventures or Island Cruises. Stop by the Veggie Wagon for local produce, jams, snacks and beverages. Savor island flavors at longtime favorite eateries such as Sea Witch Café & Tiki Bar, named one of Southern Living’s “Beach Bars We Love.” EXPLORE WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH FROM THE WATER With its crystal blue waters and pristine surroundings, Wrightsville Beach is a vibrant community that embraces an active lifestyle. The island is renowned as a top watersport destination with an established surf and SUP culture. Visitors now have more ways than ever to explore Wrightsville Beach from the water. The Blockade Runner Beach Resort operates the Carolina Runner catamaran, a 40passenger boat that provides a water taxi for day-trippers to nearby Masonboro Island, as well as sunset, twilight, fishing excursions and charter cruises. The resort’s Surf to Sound Adventures include water activities and lessons for all ages. Another way to explore the island is with a certified naturalist aboard Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours’ Shamrock pontoon boat. Birding, fishing, shell-collecting and sunset dolphin cruises are among

their specialties, as well as kids’ pirate treasure and eco-scavenger hunts, water taxi service to Masonboro Island and waterfront restaurants with dockside dining. RAISE YOUR GLASS WITH A LOCAL CRAFT BEVERAGE Embark on a self-guided tasting tour of 20 craft breweries using the online Wilmington Ale Trail to find area breweries, bottle shops and craft beer hot spots. Most of Wilmington’s craft breweries and many bottle shops feature outdoor, pet-friendly beer gardens and patios. Breweries with restaurants include Front Street Brewery, Wrightsville Beach Brewery, Waterman’s Brewing, Bill’s Brewing Co., Flying Machine Wrightsville Beach, and Catawba Valley Brewing Co. Prefer craft spirits? End of Days Distillery is Wilmington's first grain-to-glass craft distillery which has garnered International Consumer Tasting SIP awards for its Port of Entry rum, gin, and vodka. Last fall EOD released its Survivor’s Cut series bourbon—the first legal bourbon released in Wilmington since prohibition was enacted in 1908. CYCLE ACROSS WILMINGTON Spring is ideal for a leisurely cycling adventure from the river to the sea. Rent a bike or bring your own to sightsee and enjoy spring flora along Wilmington’s 15-mile, mostly off-road Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. The multi-use trail connects Wade Park, Halyburton Park, and Empie Park to the Heide-Trask Drawbridge at the Intracoastal Waterway. The trail

provides bicycle and pedestrian access to recreational, cultural and educational destinations, including: Cameron Art Museum, Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden, Firefighter’s Memorial, Autumn Hall, Lumina Station, the UNCW campus, and more. For shorter excursions, choose the 2.5-mile Loop at Wrightsville Beach Park with spectacular views of marshes and the Intracoastal Waterway, or the 1.2-mile Island Greenway in Carolina Beach that connects the town’s parks. For a unique beach experience, rent a big-tire beach cruiser or touring bicycle from a local outfitter. A truly thrilling cycling experience awaits at Blue Clay Bike Park’s 8-mile, single-track mountain bike trail (that’s right--a mountain trail at the coast!) in nearby Castle Hayne. DISCOVER WILMINGTON’S WWII HISTORY To commemorate contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort, on Sept. 2, 2020—75 years to the day after the war ended—Wilmington became the first city in the country to be designated an "American World War II Heritage City." The designation celebrates contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort. From the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA (a WWII memorial credited with 15 battle stars) and Hannah Block Historic USO (with its WWII homefront heritage lobby display) to Fort Fisher State Historic Site (where WWII soldiers were trained) and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

(where a WWII bunker remains a hidden gem today), the area’s historic contribution to the war effort is evidenced throughout the county. Exhibits at the Cape Fear Museum of History and Wilmington Railroad Museum further interpret Wilmington’s role during World War II. Read more about the military history of Wilmington or craft your own selfguided tour by downloading the WWII Heritage Guide Map. (www.wilmingtonnc.gov/WWII). DINE AL FRESCO & ENJOY THE VIEW From the Riverwalk and rooftops to boardwalks and piers, outdoor dining is a way of life for coastal visitors and residents. Enjoy the view as much as the meal when you dine al fresco at a waterfront eatery with outdoor patio seating. Riverfront restaurants from Chandler’s Wharf to the Port City Marina afford stunning views of Cape Fear River sunsets. Just minutes away, waterfront restaurants beckon at nearby beaches, many with outdoor dining options. Watch the surfers as you dine on the Crystal Pier at Oceanic Restaurant and from restaurants at the island’s oceanfront resorts. Watch boats come in as you dine marina-side at Bluewater Waterfront Grill, The Bridge Tender, and Dockside Restaurant in Wrightsville Beach. Enjoy outdoor dining in Carolina Beach with gorgeous views from the pier at Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar or the oceanfront decks at Carolina Smokehouse and Hurricane Alley's or marina-side at Stoked Restaurant. Head to Kure Beach to find big Caribbean flavor and rooftop dining at Jack Mackerel's Island Grill. Written By Lou Scott It takes more than a good resume, a stellar education, and a host of activities to land a good job or a seat on an important committee. It takes a lifetime of commitment to developing a rich character as well having people in your life who want to help you, who may influence the direction in which your life is headed. A formal education is important to be sure, but it won’t always get you where you want to go. Moreover, the idea of what constitutes a formal education changes through time. All the way from proficiency in reading, writing and arithmetic to receiving a bachelor or master’s degree, even beyond the bar keeps going up and up. What doesn’t change however, what is often the dealbreaker in success, is whether you are respected. Are you trustworthy, empathetic, a hard worker? Easy to be around? These are all “thumbs up” traits. People just like to be around likable people; it’s that simple. Developing a good character begins at birth. Children mimic what they see. They see happy or unhappy faces, friendly or unfriendly voices. They are stimulated by conversation, and the ideas and words they hear. They are made aware by the colors, music, art and philosophy around them. That’s a good beginning, as well as one that can continue through life. And it is up to each one of us to inspire by example.

I think of one of my nephews - how he always shows up, even when it’s inconvenient. He can be seen at weddings, funerals, graduations, children’s sports events (even children not his own) and so forth. That’s a powerful motivator. And even the envious, are proud of him, proud of his every success. And I think of a church choir master who took an interest in a group of nine-year-old rude and very noisy triplets. Although not one of them had ever shown any proclivity for singing, they were invited to join the choir, one well known for its excellent voices. The triplets loudly protested. Nonetheless, every Wednesday after school, their mother dragged them to church for individual music lessons. And every Thursday after school, she dragged them to church to practice with the choir. And, on every Sunday morning, their mother sits in a church pew, where the triplets are standing, sort of, in their burgundy robes, up there, singing in unison with the choir. The triplets may not have been suddenly turned into children with exquisite behavior, but they have made great strides in selfdiscipline and consideration of others. Certainly these virtues are prerequisites of good character. And certainly, these are virtues that can be well practiced throughout everyone’s life, no matter his or her age.
