Welcome back to North Carolina! What have you missed the most, what are you looking forward to and what changes have surprised you about the area since you were here as a student? I have missed North Carolina BBQ! After years of looking, I never found proper pulled pork in New York. Since I was a student, the cultural scene has grown in leaps and bounds, as has the culinary scene—the most important aspects of a dynamic city in my opinion. What made you fall in love with Art History? I grew up going to museums both in my hometown of D.C. and abroad. My mother painted abstract pictures—many of which I still have in my home—and my high school taught Art History. My first paper was on the Colonial American artist John Singleton Copley, who is represented by three works in the NCMA (North Carolina Museum of Art) collection. At Duke, I had the most inspiring professor, Kristine Stiles, who solidified my love of the field and determination to pursue graduate studies in that field. You have probably seen countless exhibits in your career. Which ones have had the largest impact on you and why? Seeing The Great Utopia - a massive survey of 20th-century Soviet avant-garde art and design - at the Guggenheim Museum in 1992 was particularly important for me. It expanded my knowledge of this period in art and political history and reinforced my decision to study it after college. The installation by the late “star architect” Zaha Hadid wowed me—elegant and educational all at once—and taught me an early lesson about the marriage of art and architecture. Thirteen years later, I curated a blockbuster show of the history of Russian and Soviet art called RUSSIA! in that very building. That project was a real challenge, but a true honor, as it included most of the greatest masterpieces I had studied. Soon thereafter, loans of art from Russia to the United States stopped. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How did you find yourself on the "curator path"? As a senior at Duke, I was selected as one of two student curators for an ongoing series called SoHo at Duke. The SoHo neighborhood (south of Houston Street in New York City) was in many ways the center of the contemporary art world in the early 1990s. I went to New York in August of 1992 with Kristine Stiles, the director of the then-Duke University Museum of Art, Michael Mezzatesta, and my fellow-student co-curator, Lisa Costantino. We went to numerous top galleries with the goal of developing a show focused on artists of our generation, Generation X, which had begun to be theorized and was the subject of a novel of that name by Douglas Coupland. We ended up focusing on issues of identity (and in the end included some Baby Boomer artists), which would be the topic of the landmark 1993 Whitney Biennial that opened around the same time as our show,

Look At Us. We had the remarkable opportunity to curate, produce a catalogue, work with artists, and participate in media interviews and public programs. We got to lead an effort to acquire a series of works that now are part of the Nasher’s collection, including works by Lorna Simpson and Cindy Sherman.

Do you have any artistic talents? I consider myself a good writer and have published widely, but in terms of the other arts, the best thing I ever made was a pen-and-ink drawing of a cheetah in the fourth grade. It’s still on display at my parents’ home! Do you collect anything yourself? And do you have a personal favorite painting? I have collected on a very limited basis for myself, but a proud moment came during my dissertation research, when I saw an optical relief by one of my artists for sale on Ebay. It is comprised of a wooden board painted black with radiating white lines forming a circle

and a tube in the center with strings attached to it and the board. This creates a watery or moiré effect. The seller wrongly thought it was by Victor Vasarely. I let him know it was by Vasarely’s son, Yvaral, so he shouldn’t have been asking so much money for it. I won the auction and have enjoyed seeing it hang in my apartment ever since.

We are sure that you have had quite a few celebrities come through your museum in New York. Anyone that you can tell us about? Well, during RUSSIA!, President Vladimir Putin, who was the official patron of the show, came to the opening. I was asked to give him a tour. He was accompanied by a press pool of 40, his security team, and U.N. General Secretary, Kofi Annan. Later on, I curated a show of works from the Guggenheim collection in Bonn, Germany, and I got to tour Liza Minelli through the show. She explained to me that a Renoir painting on view, Woman with Parakeet (1871), was her painting because of her resemblance to the subject. I never saw that painting quite the same after that! Did you receive any words of wisdom from Larry Wheeler and has anyone that we would know from NC called to congratulate you on your new role as of yet? Larry has been incredibly generous with his time since I was selected. He really transformed the museum that I had visited in the early 1990s into an arts destination that is both a jewel in the crown of North Carolina and a contributor to the cultural conversation in this nation. He imparted his experience and answered my many questions while encouraging me to begin to imagine and map out the future of the organization. I was personally pleased to hear from President Vince Price of Duke.

Some of your new responsibilities as Director are overseeing the museum's art collections, the Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park, and the educational programming and events - any previews as to what you have planned for these roles? I look forward to working with the curators to define the strategy for displaying and

growing the collection. I am keen for it to be a tool for teachers throughout the state, ideally as part of the curriculum. I intend for the museum to originate more exhibitions and support original artistic production, especially in the Museum Park. In terms of programming, the NCMA has made strides to entice more diverse audiences to visit and engage, and I want to expand the reach even further — outside the walls and grounds of the museum.

What is your "vision" for the NC Museum of Art and what types of educational programs and events do you hope to bring here? I want the museum to continue to be a place of discovery that can encourage visitors to ask questions while also enjoying their encounters with art and nature. I see the museum as a community space, and so we will be looking at the various experiences to be offered to

encourage curiosity and feed the imagination. I am committed to expanding outreach to universities, whose students will be the future staff and audiences for the museum as well as the next generation that will assume leadership roles in the state, our country, and beyond. I am particularly excited about the Matrons of the Arts Initiative, which brings attention to the contributions of women artists, cultural professionals, and art supporters throughout history. And I am keen to present the collection in new ways, offering insight into distinctive stories while highlighting points of interconnection across time and place. To that end, though I am a specialist in modern and contemporary art, I am also well versed in and appreciative of the whole history of art and will ensure that the NCMA continues to share and illuminate treasures from Antiquity to the present. •••

FIVE EASY

STYLE UPDATES

Getting dressed for all your holiday events doesn't have to mean a complete wardrobe overhaul. With a few simple style updates you'll be ready for every event that comes your way! Let me let you in on a few stylist secrets. First, dressing for the holidays can be easier than you think. Instead of feeling that you need to run out and buy a brand new wardrobe, focus on a few small items that can transform your most basic pieces into something fabulous! Sometimes it’s the small things that can have a big impact, so focus in on those few pieces that can work with what’s already in your wardrobe to transform it into something that’s perfect for your next invite.

Written by:Mary Michele Nidiffer Founder, StyleFinder Boutique StyleFinderBoutique.com 24 | triangle style

What’s great about the holidays is that most occasions call for what I like to call ‘Christmas casual’. While you may have some dressier events, Christmas casual is perfect for open houses, caroling, dinners with friends and many holiday parties. Focus your efforts here and you’ll always have several go-to options when that unexpected invitation arrives!

Three is the Magic Number

Adding in a third layer to a simple top and pants can be transformational and the power of the third layer is a wonderful thing to tap into this time of year for an easy addition of both holiday cheer, as well as warmth. But don’t wear just any old thing – try something that has some pizzazz and panache. A faux fur vest, liquid leather jacket or blazer in holiday jewel tones can be added to most tops already in your closet, as well as a few dresses, and will have you fielding compliments left and right.

Faux Real

Why not top your look off with a faux fur collar, wrap or jacket? Just adding this simple piece over your top, dress or even your basic black coat can transform it into something far more special. It elevates the most basic outfit and turns it into something elegant, making it greater than the sum of its parts.

All That Glitters

While jewelry that sparkles can add a lot to your look, why not try a top or sweater with the bling already built in? Try a rhinestone-studded sweater with your best pair of jeans or trousers and booties and see how it can elevate your look in an instant! It brings light to your face and makes you shine! Just add your fave bottoms and you’re set.

Velvet Underground

What’s one piece you can add to jeans and a basic white tee that will make it holiday ready in seconds? A velvet blazer! Velvet is red hot for the season and guarantees that your look is ready for any holiday soiree that comes your way! While red is always in style, why not try a gorgeous navy or emerald, taupe or silver? Perfect for work to weekend, a velvet blazer is guaranteed to work overtime.

Down Under

Why let the upper half of your body have all the fun? Swapping out your basic jeans or black pants for something a little more festive can make your look Christmas casual in no time flat! Try velvet jeans in black or a jewel tone for some serious fun, or add in a pair of metallic printed, flocked velveteen or brocade pants to bring a little sparkle to your ensemble. Dressing for all your holiday events doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few tricks up your sleeve, your friends will wonder if you secretly have a stylist on speed dial! •••

WEDDING DATE: SEPTEMBER 14, 2019 CEREMONY: WHITE MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH RECEPTION: THE STOCKROOM AT 230, DOWNTOWN RALEIGH PHOTOGRAPHY BY: LONG YAU

LOVE IS IN THE AIR...

Who doesn’t like a good love story and proposal? Meet two recently engaged couples from the Triangle Ashley, a single mom of two, runs PLUM Hair Atelier. Her business partner, Erin, played matchmaker and introduced her to Will, whom she had known for a while after having his mother and him as clients. Ashley felt skeptical about a future because he’s younger than her, but they started talking and over time he won her over with his kindness, patience, and understanding. She believes they are truly soulmates, saying, “Eventually I dropped my guard and fell madly in love with the man I now have zero doubt was made for me and I for him.” The couple has been long distance their entire relationship, as Will attends Tufts University in Boston where he is a third-year dental student. They view the space between them as a gift because of the way they’ve been able to build solid communication between the two of them and been able to prioritize and nurture their relationship. “We trust one another and have all the fundamentals of a successful partnership.” They shared a picture perfect proposal the day after Thanksgiving last year. They’d planned an outing with his parents, but instead he surprised her by taking her to a courtyard where he had set it up with lights, flowers, and letters spelling out “will you marry me.” Ashley was floored that he was able to surprise her, and describes it as the happiest moment in her life since hearing her daughter’s first cries at birth. Will and Ashley say “I do” September 14, at the groom’s family church, White Memorial Presbyterian, in Raleigh. They’ll follow with a reception at The Stockroom 230, and Long Yau will be their photographer. They chose The Band Punch for the entertainment, and can’t wait to share surprises with their guests in the venue’s cool, rustic atmosphere. “This wedding will be one for the books,” Ashley exclaims, “and my book has a fairy tale ending.” •••

sarah and tyler

WEDDING DATE: MAY 25, 2019

CEREMONY: SACRED HEART CHURCH IN DOWNTOWN RALEIGH RECEPTION: PRESTONWOOD COUNTRY CLUB, CARY PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AUTUMN HARRISON

Tyler and Sarah took their time getting to this moment. The couple met at NC State, where he played football and she had started as a student athletic trainer in her first year of college. The position coach introduced her to all the players and Tyler was in her position group. He had no intentions of dating at that time, and since she was dating someone else, the two thought nothing of it. Fast forward to the summer before senior year when they finally started dating and then another 4.5 years before he finally popped the question. Sarah remembers calling Tyler to chat while sitting in traffic one day. She’d been fending off curious friends and family members about when they were getting married, and that day she started teasing him that her ring size should go up at least a carat with each year that passed after four. They joked around on the phone while she continued her drive home, only to find his car parked outside her house when she arrived. As she parked, he walked out the front door with her dog on a leash. “Why are you here?” She asked, happy to see him but surprised. “I wanted to see you and ask you a question.” He got down on one knee and expressed his love and asked her right there to be his wife. Excitedly, she accepted. They’ll share nuptials on May 25 at their parish, Sacred Heart Church in downtown Raleigh, with a reception to follow at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. They chose the more intimate Sacred Heart over the larger cathedral because of its quaintness and beauty. The couple anticipates a large crowd to celebrate their love with them, and they’re thrilled at all the room Prestonwood provides them. They fell in love with the grand ballroom’s double staircase and neutral color palette, and knew it was the perfect place to share their day with friends and family. •••

HI Anna, I have heard about complexion analysis reports and figured with the new year approaching perhaps this would be the best time to nail down and address some of my problem areas. What exactly does the analysis show me? Thank you - Stephanie

Stephanie, this time of year is the perfect time to take a serious look at your skin! Receiving a complexion analysis before starting any regimen or treatment is crucial to tracking your progress and results. At Synergy, we’ve invested in the VISIA Complexion Analysis System by Canfield Scientific to give our clients and patients the most sophisticated experience in aesthetic and skin care consultations. To get the analysis started, you’ll simply take a quick photo in the VISIA interface, and then after a few moments the device will reveal exactly where your skin stands in terms of red spots, brown spots, UV damage, wrinkle density, texture and pores. Not only that, but VISIA is also able to simulate how your skin will age in the next few years, and its database of 250,000 faces will show you how your skin compares to other people your age. If you’re on the fence, I can’t stress it enough how important this kind of analysis is for giving you tangible evidence of both your baseline and any progress you make from treatment. The best part is that, at Synergy, these consultations are complimentary and you’ll leave with your customized report! Schedule an appointment for a VISIA complexion analysis today. Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

Two Inspiring Triangle Success Stories About Losing Weight and Loving It

Losing weight is not just a physical ordeal. It is an emotional journey that usually starts early in life and while genetics play a part in a person’s weight, everything a person experiences contributes to how they take care of themselves, in positive and negative ways. Ask anyone who has struggled with weight loss and they will tell you that it is not as simple as putting down the cupcake and picking up an apple – for many, food represents a “safe place”. It’s a comfort for millions of people and one that fills a void and gives them the control and refuge they need to just get through the day. The weight loss industry is a multi-million dollar one and for good reason: obesity is rampant across the age board. But for two of the Triangle’s women, accountability and determination seem to be the common key that has led to significant weight loss. These are two very different approaches to weight loss that have actually worked and are very likely to inspire anyone who is caught in that weight loss rut, not to give up! Remember to always check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss programs. Here are their stories, in their own words. >>

KELLY SHATAT WEIGHT LOSS TO DATE: 100 LBS A few years ago I was in a rough place, though successful with my business, Moon and Lola, I was struggling more than ever with my weight. I was tired, exhausted, and working so hard but not taking care of myself. I was living off fast food, caffeine, and very little sleep. I was being asked to be in front of people and the camera more and more - I was on the wheel of life and didn't know how to pause and restart. I met Amanda Arlauskas, who had been on the TV Show, The Biggest Loser, and hired her to help me workout and with getting my nutrition back on track. I was off to a great start then had a major car accident that injured my foot. We tried water aerobics, among other things, but I knew with the amount of weight I had to lose, at this pace it would take forever! So I asked around about the gastric sleeve surgery, and though it is not the “magic pill people think it is, the ones who had opted for it told me their only regret was not having it sooner. So I did it. And I concur - all of the reasons

38 | triangle style

I had thought of not to do it would never outweigh the reasons to do it! It was hard and it helps but we all can find “work arounds” and it doesn't mean you can't gain weight. I have worked out regularly for the past 3 years, but I have times when I am highly engaged and times when I slack off. I feel so much better when I do exercise and eat properly. I have done so many things that I liked and some that I loved, which helped. I also joined Iron Tribe in Cary for a while and loved it! Exercise helps but I have been told over and over again that nutrition is 80% of the battle.

BE READY FOR THE MOMENT

When I lost a significant amount of weight, I thought the biggest change would be an increase in confidence, and that I could finally wear the fashions I love! But the actual biggest change was the amount of energy I had. I had pep in my step! Others noticed how much faster I was walking. I noticed that the things that made me feel winded no longer took so much effort. I loved feeling better! It is so easy to forget these simple things and even just writing this helps me remember all of the good that has come with losing weight. I do feel more comfortable in my own skin. I think that is a combination of losing weight and age. At some point, I let go of the nonachievable crazy goals of looking like a Victoria Secret model and started wanting to be the BEST version of me! I am still quite far from my goal and still want to lose more and be better, but I have lost over a hundred pounds and I am happy it is gone! I tried Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, and every other diet under the sun. They all work when you are ready to do the work. It is a million tiny decisions. A decision to take a walk, to eat more protein, to take your vitamins, to drink water, to have one biscuit, not three. I have always been an “all or nothing” type person and this, like many other things, works best when we embrace a level of balance. I used to read these articles and pray to read the answer. I hope the things I mention help others with the same struggles I have gone through. Final thoughts: Accountability does seem to help. Get out of your own way! Feel the fear and do it anyway! ••• TURN FOR ASHLEY’S STORY >>

ASHLEY SCOGGINS WEIGHT LOSS TO DATE: 55 LBS About four years ago, I lost a lot of weight really quickly (about 80 pounds in about five months). I looked good, but I felt awful. I was so strict on myself. On an average day, I would eat probably less than 900 calories and drink about ten bottles of water. I was barely eating anything at all. Looking back now, I can’t believe how unhealthy I was being to my body. Then life happened and I gained all of the weight back...plus some, and again, rather quickly. I had my thyroid removed and gained weight. I started birth control and gained weight. I got married and gained weight. I suffer from depression and anxiety and that made me gain weight too! I just gave up caring about my body. Life was crazy and food was the only thing I could control. So, I abused it. I felt bad about myself, I cried a lot, I ate so much, I would get mad with myself and anyone around me and I didn’t want to do anything or see anyone. Gaining all that weight negatively changed who I was and how I lived my life. When I turned 25, I decided then that I wanted to change. Not only did I decide that I wanted to lose weight, I decided that I was going to make a lifestyle change. Over the past 11 months (I’ll be 26 this December), I have lost 55 pounds and have managed to keep it off and continue to lose weight! It’s not easy, and if someone says it is, then I’d love to know their secret! Yes, it has taken me longer to lose weight this time, but I’m healthy and I’m keeping it off. I feel that is more important than losing it quickly! Everyday, I’m more proud of myself for doing this. At first, I tried cutting out certain foods, but not all the time. Then I would try a fad diet, like no carbs or a shake diet or would just skip meals all together. Obviously, those didn’t work and I always felt defeated when I’d step on the scale and I didn’t change or if it went up.

40 | triangle style

Then I decided to count calories. I’m horrible with meal planning and still have issues saying “no” to certain foods. Counting calories helped me so much! I was able to still have the foods I wanted, but not stuff myself full of junk! (And I could still have bread, my favorite!!!) About two months ago, I decided to change things up a bit. My husband and I started the Whole30 challenge. Let me tell you, it rocked my world! We focused on eating whole, natural foods for 30 days and cut out all added sugars (which meant no bread). It’s a little overwhelming to learn that sugar is added to almost everything we eat. Learning how to properly feed our bodies with the good stuff made a huge impact on my life! I read books and articles about the Whole30 challenge to make sure I was following it correctly and to learn awesome recipes. A few months ago, I made a “weight loss Instagram” page. It helped me stay accountable. If I didn’t want to snap a picture of it and show people what I was eating, then I wouldn’t eat it! I wanted to show off the healthy things, not the junk. Taking pictures and posting what I was doing day to day helped me stay on track. Being a part of an online community made the weight loss journey a little more bearable. Knowing other people were on the same journey, doing the same challenge, having similar struggles or successes was an awesome motivation! Dwelling on the challenge of it all or what I can’t have bums me out big time. But thinking about how far I’ve come, looking at before and after photos, knowing I sleep better, looking at how much better my skin looks, or talking to someone about what I’m dealing with helps me and motivates me to keep going! Having my husband along for the journey keeps me on my toes too! I can’t let him down! Now when I step on the scale and it doesn’t go down or if it stays the same, I don’t feel defeated. Our weight fluctuates so much that the number on the scale doesn’t really matter. I focus on my clothes fitting better, not being winded while climbing up the stairs, being able to go for a walk and not having to stop to catch my breath, or measuring my waist and realizing I’ve lost an inch! Those non-scale victories matter to me and keep me going! My goal is to lose about 40 more pounds. For now, I’ll feed my body healthy foods and focus on the little victories everyday! •••

Are you a better guest or a better host? Definitely a better host. I have hosted many parties over the years and I am very comfortable in that role. Lately, I’ve learned to be more relaxed about it since I work so many hours now. Manchego cheese, marcona almonds, some olives, crackers and great wine makes a nice cocktail gathering with no fuss. An ideal Saturday in the Triangle would consist of ... A hike at Umstead or on any of the greenways in Raleigh followed by a cuppa something and a yummy brunch. And an exhibit at the N orth Carolina Museum of Art or an architecture tour with N orth Carolina Modernist Houses.Your quiet place: My master bath and recently redecorated bedroom where I finally wind down at end of the day. A lovely hot bath this time of year followed by an uninterrupted session with my Kindle. N o TV, no background noise and my I-Phone downstairs, tucked away. winter | 55

All Interior Photos By Cat Nguyen

Your favorite room to design: A family or living area where folks spend a lot of time. I love to delve into all the details of how a particular family lives. Will they be watching movies there? How many people will be sitting in there on average? Does everyone have a place to perch their drinks or prop their feet? Is there a throw and pillows for everyone? Is there good light for reading and dimmable overhead lights for a more ambient experience? Is the artwork in view of most people? What are the meaningful items to this family? It is a very personal, in-depth process to make sure everyone’s needs are met and that everyone is comfortable in that space. Three possessions you would insist on taking cross county: The funky painting of my three children, the ring that belonged both to my grandmother and mother, and a mother & child statue from my mother’s collection. A Tradition you hold dear: I cook my English Toffee for friends and family around the holidays. I have been doing this for almost 30 years now and it is “expected” from everyone. But I love to do it and find it quite meditative in the mindless stirring at the stove. The Triangle’s best kept secret: The local theatre scene which I took part in for the first 25 years I lived here. There is an amazingly talented pool of folks, both local and transplanted, who are every bit as good, if not better, than actors I’ve seen in bigger cities. It is an enjoyable evening to support our vibrant theatre scene and a nice alternative to seeing a movie or other activities. 56 | triangle style

How to Use New Lighting to Brighten a Dark Home As the days get shorter the sun goes down early and you may be all too aware that there are too many dark corners or inadequately lit spaces in your home. This is the time to take a good look at your interior lighting and add new fixtures and lamps. Follow these simple steps to know what works best for you and your family. 1. Decide What to Focus On Naturally, if you read, craft or cook in an area where you can't always seem to see what you are doing, the first thing to consider is task lighting. Downward lighting provides illumination on a specific spot and can even be used to highlight objects in a collection. It is especially practical over a kitchen counter. But, if you want the area to feel cozy, lighting should be near a seating area but not directly on it. This type of lighting is also best near a TV or computer to avoid glare.

58 | triangle style

2. Mix and Match Different Types of Lighting If you do a wide variety of activities in one area, such as the living room, add several different types of lighting to suit your needs. Installing a combination of ambient, task and overhead lighting will give you the most versatility. Don't forget to consider the lampshades because different amounts of light shine through different materials. Light shining through a colored shade instantly brightens a room. 3. Get the Right Fixture for the Job Now that you know what your needs are, it will be less confusing to look at the vast array of lighting options available for your home. Fluorescent lights are great for basement workshops and kitchens but look harsh in other areas of the house. If you don't want many different types of fixtures in a room, use a dimmer to control the overhead light. Lamps, sconces and pendant lights all brighten dark corners.

BLACK-EYED PEA SOUP WITH SAUSAGE AND SPINACH A delicious soup perfect for your New Years Day meal and is amazing! It’s chock full of sausage, spinach, black-eyed peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes and is perfectly seasoned. By using hot pork sausage and RO*TEL (diced tomatoes and green chilies), I didn’t even need to season with salt and pepper (but that’s up to you!). Here’s to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2019! 1 pound hot pork sausage 1-1/2 cups chopped yellow onion 2 cups baby carrots (or peeled and sliced carrots) 1 tablespoon freshly minced garlic 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 cups chicken broth 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes (undrained) 1 (10-ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies (RO*TEL – undrained) 2 (15.8-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed 3 cups tightly packed baby spinach

• In a large soup pot or dutch oven, brown sausage with onions and carrots over medium high heat unti sausage is browned and no longer pink (about 56 minutes), stirring constantly (crumble sausage while cooking). Drain off any fat from sausage. • Add garlic, thyme, chicken broth, diced tomatoes and RO*TEL. Stir to combine.

38 | triangle style 60

• Bring to a gentle boil and reduce heat to simmer. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, or until carrots are tender, stirring occasionally. • Add black-eyed peas and spinach and stir to combine. Cook uncovered for 34 minutes, or until spinach is wilted.

BABY RED POTATO POPPERS So savory, creamy, light and fluffy… these Baby Red Potato Poppers are always a welcomed appetizer or side dish! Extremely simple to put together…the hardest part is scooping out the potatoes, but a melon baller makes it easy peasy

1-1/2 pounds baby red potatoes (about 15 potatoes) 2/3 cup sour cream 1/2 cup fully cooked and chopped bacon 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives • Rinse and scrub potatoes. Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a gentle boil. Cook for 15 minutes, or until a knife can be easily inserted into potatoes. • Drain potatoes in a colander and allow to cool. Once potatoes have cooled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

• Slice potatoes in half length-wise. Using a melon baller, scoop out potato flesh, leaving about a 1/4-inch border. Place potato flesh in a medium bowl. • Add sour cream, bacon, garlic powder, salt and pepper and stir well to combine. • Using your melon baller, spoon mixture into potato skins. • Place potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until potatoes are warmed thoroughly.

DECK THE HALLS Written by Jenny Yarborough

DIY HOLIDAY GARLAND

Faux fur may be in again this winter but fake garland just doesn’t do your home justice so we pose you the question: why not make your own? It’s the perfect way to connect with nature, get out in your garden and then sit down to create by the fire during the holiday season.

CREATE YOUR OWN LIVE WREATH

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• Rope the length of your desired garland • Green floral wire • Wreath pins • Pruning shears • Wire cutters • Gardening gloves

1. Grab your coat and step outside. Part of the fun in making your own garland is the part where you get to be back in touch with nature. Walk through your yard and wooded areas in your neighborhood with a basket, gloves and pruning shears. While you’re outdoors you’ll be on the lookout for anything evergreen that strikes you. Boxwood, juniper, fir, spruce, pine, holly, magnolia and cedar are some of our favorites during the winter season for long-lasting floral decor. For added texture you may like to try searching for cotton, dried wheat, or curly willow branches to include in the mix. You’re welcome to keep it simple and use a single type of greenery like boxwood or a fir or collect sprigs from three to five trees and shrubs to include a variety of textures, colors and shapes. If you’re going for a mix, try including sprigs with red berries, something silver, variegated or even branches scattered with small cones. While you’re gathering, it’s important to note that you are pruning while you’re cutting your trimmings so cut your hedges, trees and shrubs evenly with care. 62 | triangle style

2. Now, bring it on home! Bring your cuttings indoors to a comfortable place by the fire on a table or settle down on the floor where you don’t mind getting a little dirty. 3. Cut your rope to the length of your desired garland. Now, gather a grouping of three to five pieces of greenery layering your larger pieces first, followed by your more unique sprigs like your hollies or variegated varieties. Find the end of the rope and begin to affix the grouping to the rope using the wire with any needles or leaves facing outward past the tail end of the rope. Be sure to cover the rope. Our rope is simply there to serve as a structural base. 4. Use the same technique from step three, collecting another three to five cuttings and placing these so that they overlap and cover the woody ends of the previous grouping. Continue this step wrapping the wire around and around tightly remembering to use a variety of leaf textures and colors as you go until you’ve circled all the way back around to where you began and the rope is fully covered.

5. Now, check out your craftsmanship. Feel free to add a sprig here or there to even things out for consistency. 6. Hang on your mantle or wrap your railings, add a custom-made bow for a little extra color and deck the halls!

Not sure you can tackle this project on your own? Register online for one of Garden Supply Company’s holiday workshops at gardensupplyco.com/calendar/. Live wreaths and other arrangements are also available to order custom.

Humidifiers and Vaporizers

If your home has central heating and the indoor air is dry, try using a humidifier or a vaporizer. Humidity helps to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and makes it easier to breathe when your nose is congested. Diffuse antiviral essential oils, such as eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon, or lavender oil for better sleep.

Stay Hydrated

NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR THE

Common

Cold

The best cure for a cold is to rest, stay warm and drink a lot of liquids. There are many natural remedies, too, that can alleviate cold symptoms while the virus runs its course. Stock up on herbal teas, essential oils and warm soups for the cold season, and if you get sick, try these home remedies.

A Salt Water Gargle for Sore Throat

A homemade salt water gargle soothes a sore throat. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt to a glass of boiled water, let the mix cool, and use it to gargle. Zinc lozenges relieve throat pain and irritation.

Steam Inhalations

A steam inhalation with essential oils is an easy but effective remedy for respiratory infections. Add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus, rosemary, pine or lavender essential oils to a bowl of steaming hot water, place your head above the bowl, cover your head and the bowl with a towel, and inhale the hot steam for up to ten minutes. The steam and the essential oil vapors clear congested nasal passages and ease throat pain.

Herbal Remedies and Vitamins

Echinacea is an herbal remedy that is often used for colds and other upper respiratory tract infections. In some studies, it reduced the length of a cold and made some symptoms less severe when participants took it at the start of the cold. Some studies say that vitamin C does not prevent colds, but it may shorten the cold. Research has also suggested that zinc supplements might help if you take them as soon as you feel the first cold symptoms. 64 | triangle style

Staying hydrated is important, especially if you have a fever. Drink warm liquids and eat warming soups: chicken soup or vegetable broth make you feel better when you've caught a cold. Herbal infusions and herbal teas that relieve cold and flu symptoms include ginger, peppermint and thyme. Sage herbal tea is a well-known remedy for a sore throat. A hot drink made with boiled water and a few slices of fresh ginger, a teaspoon of lemon juice and some honey is a natural remedy for cold symptoms. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, honey is antibacterial and soothes a sore throat, and ginger is a warming spice with many medicinal uses.

Baths with Essential Oils

When you feel the first cold symptoms, take a warm bath with essential oils. Try antiviral essential oils, such as eucalyptus and tea tree, and oils that relieve body aches and pains, such as lavender, pine and marjoram. Add up to 6 drops of essential oils to a warm bath and relax for at least 15-20 minutes.

GOT TOXIC FAMILY MEMBERS?

Everyone has this type of family member. It could be the cousin who can't stop gossiping behind everyone's back; the grumpy uncle who always has something nasty to say about you or someone close to you; or the aunt who keeps asking for a loan whenever you see her. Toxic family members are especially hard to deal with because they're family, but it is possible to create healthy boundaries with them so that you can keep all bad juju away. Here are five ways to get you started.

CHOOSE WHEN AND HOW TO MEET.

For certifiably toxic individuals, timing is key. Toxic family members are best met in large gatherings or occasions. Avoid meeting for oneon-one brunches or lunches, where you can expect to bear the brunt of the negativity that the other person is prepared to spew.

MINGLE TO KEEP CONVERSATIONS TO A MINIMUM

A good thing about family gatherings is that you are expected to go around. This is a great excuse for why you can't spend 10 more minutes with her discussing how and why cousin Suzy is starting to let herself go. Tell the gossipy aunt that you see someone you have not spoken to in a long time, and make a run for it.

VOTED BEST HOUSE CLEANER IN WAKE COUNTY KNOW WHEN TO GET OUT

Toxic behavior tends to escalate from unacceptable to embarrassing to potentially dangerous. A person who goes overboard with his alcohol consumption during family gatherings may start exhibiting signs of unruly behavior on his sixth or tenth glass of Scotch. That may be a good time to make a quick beeline for the doors so you can forgo the drama that is about to unfold.

IS SHE/HE REALLY ALL THAT BAD?

In some cases, the people you think are toxic and unbearable may not be so bad after all. Perhaps they are nursing an underlying resentment from a negative occurrence that happened years ago, or maybe you're insecure about how you compare to them. Getting clarity is the first step toward deciding whether to prune someone from your life. You wouldn't want to let go of an important relationship just because of a misunderstanding, no matter how deep-rooted it may be. Experts recommend making a list of pros and cons to determine if this person is as negative as they seem.

CUT TIES

There are two ways to cut ties with someone: you either stop communication temporarily or do it for the long term. Distance is sometimes all you need to get away from the negativity so that you can cool off and clear your head. For others, a permanent solution may be their best option, especially if they have done everything they can to help improve the situation, to no avail. This last resort is particularly understandable if the toxic behavior is affecting relationships with other members of the family, or putting you or others in harm's way. Toxic family members can be a part of life, but it doesn't mean that you should resign yourself to a life of uncomfortable family dinners. Setting healthy boundaries, knowing when to get out, and putting distance between you can go a long way in making sure that their negativity doesn't spill over to your life. •••

Slip into the Unity Outfitters slip in Indigo Blue. The organic cotton floats against your skin, while your conscience enjoys the sustainable and ethical way it was produced. You love feeling good inside and out, as you reach for your hose. They’re comfortable – a first! They’re stylish – a must! These Hipstik tights fit your body exactly, conforming perfectly to your shape. The best part about your new lingerie and beauty products? They’re all produced by three women-owned businesses in North Carolina! While it wasn’t until the late 1980s that a woman could take out a business loan in the United States without a male co-signer, dismantling that

barrier caused the number of women-owned businesses to skyrocket. Today, there are 12.3 million women-owned businesses, up by 3000 percent since the 70s, or about 40% of all businesses, according to the American Expresscommissioned State of Women Owned Businesses report. In North Carolina, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 138.1% over the past 20 years, as reported by the Small Business Association Office of Advocacy. Not only are these businesses owned and operated by women living out their dreams, they’re also a valuable part of the North Carolina economy. In 2017, North Carolina was ranked 7th in the nation for growth in businesses owned by women, employing nearly 9 million people, and producing more than $1.7 million in revenue. Raleigh ranked 16th in overall growth of women-owned businesses among the top 50 American metropolitan areas, while Charlotte ranked number one, with a 241.6% increase in growth over the past 15 years! Regardless of the industry, women-owned businesses are booming, and they’re creating better communities as they grow. Looking your best never felt this good!

Hipstik

Laura McGuire, CEO and co-founder of Hipstik.

> If it hadn’t been for a train ride

and a pair of scissors, Hipstik might never have been born. “It’s absolutely true,” said Laura McGuire, CEO and co-founder of Hipstik. “I’d buy a pair of pantyhose, wear them in the morning, and after lunch, I would take a pair of scissors into the bathroom and cut down [in the control top]; it formed a “V” so that my stomach could breathe. This worked great for the first hour…but then I would have to shimmy for the rest of the day to keep them up.” After coming up empty in the search for hosiery that was not shapewear, Laura realized that what she needed didn’t exist. They never seemed to be the right size or were made to one certain body type, despite a 2016 study by the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles at Washington State University that showed the average American woman wears between a size 16 and 18. All of this was swirling around in her head when Laura took a fateful train ride. “The train ride was so peaceful,” Laura said. “I had a moment to just think and look out the window. Riding through North Carolina, you can see a lot of the old hosiery mills that closed down along the train line. At that moment, while wearing pantyhose with a V cut into them, I thought, ‘I can make these.’” The idea quickly became a family enterprise, with North Carolina roots. Laura’s father came up with the name – Hipstik, referring to the fact that the hose stay up via your hips, not your waist – while Laura’s husband, Jim, is the co-founder and designer. Hipstik partnered with a North Carolina manufacturer for the hosiery and the packaging. In fact, the only piece of the entire product that does not come from North Carolina is the Italian lace. “North Carolina is called ‘the Hosiery Capital of the South,’” said Laura. “That’s a pretty bossy statement. I think the fact that North Carolina is a part of me, and the product is developed locally is hugely beneficial…it is very important to me that Hipstik is in North Carolina. I mean, we took every step to make that happen.” Hipstik Legwear – size-inclusive, comfort-first, low-rise tights and pantyhose – offers a stretchy lace top with a silicone band to keep them from sagging, are sized according to body shape rather than weight, and offer the opaque tights in navy, black, and brown, sized in Triangle, Rectangle, V Shape, Hourglass, and O Shape (and height). “For decades, products for women have been designed by men,” Laura said. “Hosiery products on the market have been uncomfortably designed to control, squeeze and promote slenderizing with unrealistic sizing measures. “This calling has always been very personal to me,” Katina said. “Clothing is a basic need. Everyone worldwide wears some form of clothing, and the craft of making textiles and apparel is one of the oldest and most complex industries on the planet. No matter what people might tell you, working in the fashion industry is not shallow or superficial work. It is a mainstay of culture that globally employs 60 to 75 million people.” Unity Outfitters makes a commitment to employing single mothers from Raleigh, North Carolina for their production work, and to being ethical and sustainable throughout their production process. From the fabric to the packaging, they are transparent about where they source their materials and conduct their production, working with other women-owned companies to ensure everything is organic, eco-friendly, and fair trade. “The trade of making clothing is about so much more than staying ahead of the trends and which famous person is wearing what brand this month,” Katina said. “In my last position, I spoke out against the way that workers were being treated. Management told me more than once to keep it to myself, and when I didn’t, I got let go. That was when I realized I was ready to have my own business, so that I could do things the right way. I’m now making products I’m really proud to make and sell in a way that I know has a positive impact on everyone involved and everyone who wears it.”

> When Katina Gad started Unity

Outfitters, she knew she wanted to do something that helped women and that involved natural dyes and organic fabric. The Raleigh-based designer was influenced by her dressmaker Syrian grandmother, indigenous women weavers in Guatemala, and artists in Mexico to create the line of lingerie available today. Her earliest memories are of watching her Sittu (grandmother) work on the custom dresses commissioned through her grandmother’s fabric shop. Katina carried on the family tradition by getting degrees in Business Administration (Wake Tech), Fashion Design (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, LA), and Fashion and Textile Management (NC State) with the intention of continuing the heritage craft of dressmaking while working in the fashion industry.

In the last year, Unity Outfitters has focused on producing bras, underwear, sleepwear, and loungewear. Currently available online at UnityOutfitters.com, their goal is to open a retail space in Raleigh or Cary, with enough room to do their own production, sell their products, and bring in other sustainable products to sell on the retail side. “Being able to design and produce these garments here in Raleigh using a local supply chain has been such a happy homecoming,” Katina said. “I would love to be able to build the team and continue to provide employment for more women. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what the future holds for Unity Outfitters!”

“Endure” means “to last,” and the lasting memory of her daughter is what drove Nikki Huebner to found her company, Endure Beauty.

Originally begun as a way to fill a gap in the lash industry, Endure Beauty has just launched an all organic skincare line in addition to the EndureLash cloths they were already known for. EndureLash cloths provide an easy and beneficial way to wash and dry eyelash extensions without shedding, while the Endure Under Eye Gel Pads battle swelling and puffiness and deliver amazing results. Both products are the first of their kind and are unlike any others on the market. To those products, a new all-organic skincare line has just been added. The three-step routine includes a facial cleanser, a lash wash, and a facial toner perfectly formulated to help purify, restore, and add a glow to skin and eyelashes. “The new skincare line is the perfect addition to Endure Beauty,” said Nikki. “We know how important it is to our consumers to have an organic option that was safe to use around the delicate eye area. We worked hard to make sure that the cleanser, lash wash, and toner would provide stunning results while still being completely organic, hypoallergenic, paraben free, and alcohol free.”

Endure Beauty

Nikki Huebner, CEO and co-founder of Endure Beauty

After 16 years selling medical devices, and time spent as a dental hygienist before that, Nikki moved her focus from teeth to eyes. She could not find a product to use keeping her own eyes and lash extensions clean the way she needed to, so she developed her own. As soon as she established her product, she wanted to come up with a word that meant “to last,” to have as part of her business name. This was in honor of her late daughter, Chyler, who died in a tragic accident. In addition to using the word “endure,” details from Chyler’s life are woven into the business, including the retail price point - $25.10 – and new products launching on the 10th of the month, all in honor of Chyler’s birthday on May 10. A portion of Endure Beauty’s proceeds go to charitable organizations to keep Chyler’s memory alive. Chyler’s Family Room Projects is an extension of Ronald McDonald House Charities, providing rooms available to families with sick and dying children in hospitals, for which roughly $200,000 was raised in 2016. “I’m so pleased to be sharing my organic beauty tools with other women who are ready to take their eye care routine to the next level!” said Nikki. Endure Beauty products are available for purchase at select, local boutiques as well as online at EndureBeauty.com.

HOW TO TURN RESOLUTIONS INTO

HABITS TURN THE GOOD INTENTIONS OF NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS INTO GOOD HABITS OF A LIFETIME:

The start of the New Year comes with people everywhere making resolutions to improve themselves in one way or another. These might pertain to fitness, their careers, finances, and more. they are often made in earnest and come from a real desire to better oneself.

So perhaps the key isn't to make, or even stick to, resolutions, but rather to form new habits. Resolutions are changes people make themselves do, whereas habits are things they just do. Resolutions feel forced and are temporary; habits are automatic and long-lasting.

But even the resolutions made in the best faith tend to fade. The motivation provided by January's fresh start can wane with February's monotony. By March, apathy can set in, and the brand new beginning has turned into the same old, same old.

START WITH SPECIFICS A New Year's resolution to lose weight is ambiguous. If you drop a pound, have you been successful? Instead, it might be better to set a specific goal, a real number of pounds. If you're in business and want to increase sales, how many deals do you have to make, exactly? If you're going to put more of your paycheck into savings each month, how much? If your goal is to get to work earlier each day, or, conversely, achieve a better work-life balance by leaving earlier each day, what times do those goals entail? It's more challenging to stick to abstract resolutions than it is to make specifics part of your routine, which is how you form habits.

Why does this happen? Chances are, the thing a person wants to change -- their appearance, job situation, lack of funds, etc. -- has been created by less-than-desirable habits. Habits become ingrained over time, and they are hard to break. Years of eating poorly, for example, are hard to undo with a resolution to eat better just because the calendar flips to a new year.

— WRITTEN BY ANDREW KAY

72 | triangle style

MEASURE AND RECORD Many resolutions fall by the wayside because motivation falters if improvement is not noticeable. It's easy to say "What's the point?" By tracking tangible improvements, such as pounds lost, dollars earned, books read or time spent with family, you get real evidence of goal achievement, which can help you stay motivated. By measuring results and recording them as evidence of success, you're more likely to remain as motivated as you were on Jan. 1, and staying motivated is a big deal when it comes to turning the forced behaviors of January and February into the automatic habits of March and beyond. TIMING IS EVERYTHING When you were a child, your parents probably had to remind you to brush your teeth. It was likely a struggle for them, but it's now something you do as part of your morning routine. You just do it, so it's a habit. The time of day can help form habits. If you introduce new things as parts of old routines, it might be easier to convert them to real habits, like brushing your teeth. That might mean working out at the same time every day or staying on top of your emails by signing on at a specific time each day. Repetition is another key to habit-forming, and including times as parameters can be a helpful part of the repetition. No matter what your New Year's resolutions are, making them is the easy part. Sticking to them is much more difficult, especially if in your mind you frame them as resolutions. Instead, it might be more productive to label them as new habits, and turning them into patterns can be more comfortable if you can keep a few simple tricks in mind. If you usually battle with people to win arguments, you know doing so is painful. You're left unhappy, even when you seem to be victorious. Strangely, when you change your outlook and don't aim to win, you will probably triumph. •••

Many clients see results after the very first treatment, however, results tend to improve in the months following treatment. This accumulation is best achieved during winter, when protecting skin from the sun’s damaging rays is a bit easier than in warmer months. Southern Dermatology’s boardcertified and experienced providers offer the latest state of the art technology, and invites you to create a plan now for your best summer skin yet. Non-invasive treatments like Halo Pro™and Fraxel® improve your skin’s tone, texture, and radiance. Although they work differently, they both correct signs of aging, sun damage, and scarring. Many people are able to achieve results that make them look younger without any dramatic changes or extended downtime. ProFractional™ Resurfacing Therapy can also be used in the winter time to help your skin heal and improve collagen, which can tighten loose skin and reduce wrinkles. This laser treatment is especially well-suited for the delicate eye area, and many people see results in this tricky to treat area thanks to ProFractional’s high-tech approach. Another laser treatment perfect for this time of year is BBL Therapy (BroadBand Light), which is basically an enhanced version of IPL (intense pulsed light). The truly remarkable benefit of BBL is that not only does it help clients achieve younger-looking skin by repairing sun damage, rejuvenating the complexion, and encouraging anti-aging, but it restores the genetic pattern of aged skin. Like the other cosmetic laser treatment options at Southern Dermatology, BBL also achieves its results without downtime and provides long-lasting results. Cosmetic laser treatments help to remove the appearance of sun damage, get rid of unwanted hair, and give you the beautiful summer complexion you want to show off year round. The skilled dermatologists at Southern Dermatology can create a treatment plan that is best for your skin’s individual needs.

Winter is the perfect time to plan ahead for unwanted hair removal and a bright complexion for summer. Using cosmetic laser treatments on sunburned or tanned skin can be risky, and clients are advised to wait until tans have faded and sunburns healed. Since cold temperatures mean we spend less time exposing our skin to the sunshine, it’s the best time to receive these rejuvenating treatments. Sun exposure can severely damage the process, and avoiding it— along with a good skincare regimen before and after treatment— is important for your skin’s health and for protecting your investment.

Dr. Margaret B. Boyse of Southern Dermatology takes a conservative, affordable, holistic approach to determine if the simple solution is best or if she needs to apply more advanced technologies to treatment. She enjoys educating patients about prevention, building longterm relationships through excellent customer care, and being a part of their lives through her medical practice. Specialties include: Cosmetic Dermatology, General Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery and Skin Cancer.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT In the last issue of Triangle Style, I talked about sitting at my dining room table at 4 am, doing my taxes, and when I stood back up, I was unable to move my right foot. Terrified, I called 911 and spent the following week or so in the hospital, followed by a little over a month in a physical rehab facility. Now, I am going to talk about my experiences there, but before I do, I want to explain why I am sharing them. Why would perfectly healthy people want to know about rehab centers? Perhaps they wouldn't. But no knows the future for themselves, a family member, friend, or even a neighbor down the street, who lives alone and needs help. What I have to share may be helpful.

Observation 1: The room. During my first day, after

being wheeled down the hallway, to my room, I had to make an important decision. Did I want the bed by the window with its view of the garbage bins in the horizon. Or did I want the bed closer to the bathroom and to the door of the room, leading to

the hallway. Well, the hallway looked pretty cheerful. Friendly faces were walking by. And if I had a problem and no one answered my buzzer right away, I would be able to flag whichever very pleasant person walked on by. So, I chose the bed by the door. This proved ideal until my roommate arrived, followed by a parade of helpful friends and family. In much worse shape than I, of course the staff came in several times a night to help her. But they not only turned on her light but mine as well. I felt guilty about being feeling annoyed, but I needed my rest, as it was hard to get to sleep because of my pain and even harder to get back to sleep. Observation number 1, for me. If possible, I would opt for a bed by a window, or better still, choose a single room if available.

Observation 2. All new staff members should have an experienced person in the room with them,

especially when getting a patient back into bed. When my roommate fell, additional help had to be called. In my case, in much better shape than she,

that wasn't necessary. I was told to call for help with my roller any time I got up to go to the bathroom, which was a good idea, because I would have had difficulty on my own.

OUR BUSINESS IS OPENING DOORS

Observation 3: Visitors. The woman in the next bed had

rotating family members visit all day, but they watched television the entire time. This may have been what she wanted. But I felt differently. I didn't want a lot of visitors sitting by my bedside. I felt OK about my antisocial behavior. As my mother long ago had said, “the visitor she had most valued was the one who said nothing, just sat and read her book and knitted a sweater. It was comforting to have someone call the nurse or else let her sleep when needed”.

Observation 4: Speak up. Waking up, in the middle of

the second night, my upper lip was swollen. Then the lower lip. Next my face. Did someone mix up my medication, or was I allergic to something? But, when the inside of my mouth began to swell, I insisted that someone should call an ambulance. I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't been able to speak for myself. Luckily the hospital was not far away and the ambulance got me there just in time - just as my throat began to swell. The hospital gave me an intravenous and something or other and sent me back to the rehab center with medication. A couple of days later, my face was recognizable, though I did need to do something about my hair.

Observation 5: Medications. It's a really good idea to

have a family member or a good friend to thoroughly check out your medications and dosages. Do the total milligrams on a generic medication match the ones you already take? The medications I was being given didn't seem right to me. The nurse said, “It's on your chart”. I asked to see my chart. My chart was wrong. Instead of being given two pills of one of my regular medications, (10 mg each), I was being given two pills of 20 mg each. The nurse told me no one could force me to take a pill. So, I took just one of the pills. At the end of my stay, one of the doctors came in to apologize. She had “accidentally” doubled the dosage on several of my medicines: looking at the number of pills I was being given but not looking at the total amount of milligrams. If I hadn't been able to speak for myself, the consequences could have been very unpleasant. It may sound as if being in the rehab center was a horrible experience. It wasn't. The physical therapists were top notch. At first, the nerve in my leg didn't move at all. After a day or two of electrical stimulation, the therapist did get a response. Along with intense physical therapy, my improvement grew greater and greater as time went on and for that I am very thankful.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS SERAPHINE is about the once-famous painter, who is now largely forgotten. The film begins with Seraphine tenaciously scrubbing the floors and stumbling through all the necessary duties expected by the old man for whom she works. After he is satisfied with what Seraphine has done, she goes back home to a dingy and rundown apartment, where she stays up all night, pounding and mixing in a frenzy of painting from her unusual collection of ingredients accumulated along the way. Seraphine’s paintings are a vibrant, abstract, and intense explosion of color and after the same man who first promoted Picasso discovers them, she achieves a brief period of universal recognition and modest wealth, only to be later discarded by those who made a lot of money from her talent when her originality was at its peak. THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW One evening while walking to his club, a professor of criminal law stops in front of a portrait of a beautiful woman in the window of an art gallery. There’s something mysterious about her, something that takes a firm hold on him and thus when she appears alongside him from out of the fog, he agrees to go back to her apartment to see her other paintings. Once there, a jealous “client” pushes his way inside and attacks the professor, bearing down with a knife and with no way out, the professor kills him. Picking up the phone to call the police, he hesitates, then puts it back down again. Realizing his wife would know where he has been, he’s caught in a web of spiraling despair, especially so when his closest friend, a detective, becomes eerily suspicious. Edward G Robinson and Joan Blondell star in this classic.

THE ARTIST, nominated for best picture and best actor, this is a film they will be showing in film classes for years to come. For it’s a magical portrayal of the end of the silent film era and those stars who were left behind when neither their voices nor their mannerisms carried them through. An excellent film, a unique film, you will like it.
