Sacramento-District 19 State Senator Monique Limón has created a video explaining California’s “Build Back Boldly” budget for the fiscal year 20212022. The budget provides relief for families, seniors, small businesses, non-profits, and local governments that have suffered through the pandemic while building the state’s reserves to $25.2 billion. “There is over $8 billion in direct relief to Californians and over $300 million to address EDD delays,” she said. “For healthcare, it expands Medicare eligibility to all income-eligible Californians n Limón, see page 7

Andre Toselli from Airhead Parts in Ventura said 110 VWs were taking part in the Vintage VW Car Show. He’s been a VW fan since he was five years old. “My cousin, for some reason I’ll never understand, picked me up to go on a date; he took me on his date, he was 19, and we went to see Star Wars,” he said. “I went to see Star Wars in a Volkswagen Beetle, and I have been selling Volkswagen parts for 20 years, and I have Star Wars tattoos. It must have made some kind of impression.” He loves hanging out with everyone who loves VWs. “I’ve been organizing this for close to 10 years,” he said. “I’ve been doing the Canada to Mexico cruise since around the time that I took this over.

Oxnard-- On Thursday, June 24, tragedy struck in Surfside, Florida, as Champlain Towers South, a 12 story beachside condominium complex, partially collapsed, leaving 98 people

confirmed dead. The City of Oxnard was at the scene. Fire Chief Alexander Hamilton was deployed as the chief leader of a group of peer support firefighters and clinicians from around the country dispatched to Miami, Florida, because of the Surfside

building collapse. Hamilton’s team primarily gave mental health support for the firefighters who responded to the building collapse for the first few days and the search and rescue teams that did the recovery work. n Surfside, see page 5

Oxnard-- You know, sometimes, no matter how hard I try, I can’t figure out why this area plays out the way it does.

ET me explain; I’m having an atypical Monday, as I had to go to the doctor. That backtracks to Saturday, as I tried finding my way across a dark bedroom on my way to the bathroom. What I ended up doing was tripping on the J-Train’s laundry basket, and on my way down, I stuck her dresser. By Sunday evening, I was in unbelievable pain, and getting out of bed was not happening. Well, the J-Train helped me get up, sort of, and I decided to make a trip to the doctor and have him look at my back. Lucky me, I ended up with a giant hematoma across my back that was pushing on my ribcage. Anyway, the doc gave me a prescription for industrial strength Advil, and I hobbled my way to pick up my meds. Then I learned about a county event that helped the homeless, which I was not invited to attend. Yup, I was left off the guest list, but I went anyway.

I love seeing the same people and hanging out and seeing people that I don’t get to see except for at these events.” He loves seeing unique Beetles, which always piques his interest. “We have a white Beetle over here with right-hand drive that we were looking at, and it had some funky foreign plates that we’ve never seen before,” he said. “There were neat accessories, and we couldn’t peg what year it was. Their family bought it brand new from a dealership in Nigeria. I was a really cool car.” Andre said he drives about 70,000 miles per year in his Volkswagen bus. “The most I have ever driven in one day was 940 miles in a VW bus,” he said. He said they used to hold the show at Ventura Harbor, but they decided to make a change. “It was area small area, and once we overflowed that, we started looking around,” he said. “We’ve been here for about 10 years, and they already do car shows here. They said, yea, we’re happy to have you. Every year, they check in with us and ask what day do want this year. It’s a great venue.” Club President Reed

Cowan said their club was formed about two years ago to give residents a local Volkswagen presence. “Traditionally, most of the activities for Volkswagen shows, events, and campouts are further down in the Los Angeles area,” he said. “We wanted to have something for local people to participate. As it turns out, we were onto something because there are over 100 cars here today. We’ve had a couple of different campouts, and the response has been great.” He said one of the club’s primary purposes is supporting Airhead Parts. “They, in turn, act as one of the sponsors for the club,” he said. “We meet at their offices once a month, and we try to plan activities for people that enjoy the Volkswagen hobby. It’s a diverse group, and people

contribute their talents. It’s a great group, and we get a lot of participation, and it’s a situation where we can get together and accomplish something that we can’t do individually. It’s a team effort, and we are grateful for our team. We don’t charge any dues at this point, and you’re a member when you want to be.” He said the membership requirements appeal to plenty of people. “There are not a lot of rules to follow other than to come and enjoy the Volkswagen hobby, see some cars, meet some people, and it gets some parts back into circulation,” he said. “The swap meet here is a good way to get those parts that have been hanging around in the garage, turn them into money, or at least get them back into circulation to continue the furtherment of the Volkswagen hobby, which is why we are here in

the first place.” Andre said he is an oldschool classic Beetle fan. “I owned one watercooled (late model) Volkswagen, and I enjoyed it, but not anywhere to the extent that I enjoyed the old ones,” he said. “I can work on the old one myself. With the new one, you go to the dealership and ask them to diagnose it (a new one), and you pray, like hell, they don’t bend you over a barrel. They were not designed to be fixed by the common people.” He bought his first Volkswagen at age 20 while attending college. “My brother owned one, and my other college roommate owned one,” he said. “Mine was a 1966 Beetle with a metal sunroof. I bought my second Beetle in 1976, and it has never been a better can than what it is right now. I love that car.” S e c r e t a r y / Tr e a s u r e r Heather Cowan said

everyone is welcome at the club, and members new to the Volkswagen hobby get great advice. “We meet the first Tuesday of every month at Airhead Parts, 1770 North Ventura Avenue, and everyone who is a member of Ventura Vintage Volkswagens is welcome to attend,” she said. “Ventura Vintage Volkswagens is a 501c3 organization and all of our proceeds we donate back to organizations in Ventura County.” Reed noted the club harvests talents to make the group better. “Part of what happens when we have a monthly event is we find out their particular talents,” he said. “One of our guys is particularly good on the microphone, and he’ll do the raffle and the auction. Someone else might say they know of a good band that we can hire. You absorb all these talents.” Guy St. Clair said he loves going to Volkswagen shows. “All the cars are from all the same years, but they are all different,” he said. “They fit the owner’s personality. I have a Baja Bug, and it’s different from all the other Baja Bugs you are going to see. The busses are all campers and the same color, but they are all different. You wouldn’t meet some people in your circle, but when

you come to this group, you meet them all. Everybody is friendly and appreciates their car for what it is. It’s like a big family.” Aaron Colter owns a 1973 VW Thing. “That’s what it is; it’s a thing,” he said. “They were actually called Type 181s in Europe.” He’s loved VW’s since he was a child. “When I was really young, I would drive Baja Bugs,” he said. “My first real girlfriend when I was 16 had a blue Superbeetle, and that was fast and fun. I was into lowriders back then, but that car was low and fun.” Colter owns multiple Volkswagens, and he often has to decide which one to drive that day. “I have a 1967 Type 1, which would be a Beetle,” he said. “I have a Type 3, which is a 1967 Karmann Ghia Fastback, and I also have a Microbus.” He has no problem getting parts. “The community is so good, and they all sell parts,” he said. “We’re all friends in some weird shape or form. People who I would never have talked to or would have never wanted to talk to me before talk to me because we all love Volkswagens.” For more information about the VW club, go to www.volkswagens.org.

“The entire building was gone,” he said. “You see, when they implode buildings to have something that collapses on its own, and it didn’t affect either of the buildings on either side. Both of those buildings we almost completely unscathed.” He noted that the building pancaked on top of itself. “It was an unbelievable sight to behold, and it’s Miami, Florida in the summer, so it’s incredibly hot and humid,” he said. “The smell of death, unfortunately, was in the air and difficult to bear. Some of the members of my team were retirees of FDNY (Fire Department New York), and a couple of them, the first day we got to the site, had a strong emotional reaction.” He said the experiences brought his teammates right back to 9/11. “But it also meant having them there; the Miami firefighters we interacted with had some kinship with the FDNY personnel as well,” Hamilton said. “They were both doing recovery after a building collapse. They were happy to see those FDNY guys. It was a confronting scene, in terms of knowing it was a recovery effort at that point and there were no rescues to be made.” He said there was little to no void space when the building collapsed. “The way the building collapsed, when you have pancake collapse, there are often very few void spaces,” he said. Hamilton was deployed to El Paso, Texas, after the mass shooting in 2019, and normally his team would go in after the event to help the first responders unpack their experience. “You let them know that it’s okay to have a strong reaction and deal with those reactions,” he said. “In this case, a lot of the responders that we were interacting with are still very much in operational mode, and the incident was not over for them. It’s a little bit more difficult to provide true behavioral health support.” He said the men dealing with the problem need to maintain their concentration and focus. “The first morning we got there, a clinician I worked

with before and me, we were taking a tour with one of the Miami/Dade Behavioral Health folks, and we had a chief run over to us and say, you are behavioral health support come over here with me, I need your help right now,” he said. “We have a team that just came off the pile, and they just recovered a family of four.” Hamilton and his teammate went to the group, and the group that recovered the family was having a break. “We sat with them, and some of the conversations were about the work they had just done and the recoveries they just made,” he said. “It would go from there, with pretty horrifying details to how we would load hose on our engines in California, then back to other conversations about other bodies they’d recovered and how long they had been on the scene.” He described it as a weird conversation that would leave people scratching their heads about how it unfolded. “By the end of the conversation, one of the people on this team was serenading us and sung a song,” Hamilton said. “From the outside looking in, people looking in were probably thinking what is going on over there? What are these peer support folks doing?” The group could not unpack their experiences yet; it was too early as they were still on scene, so he said the focus changed to what the group can use right now? “Is there something we can do right now to make this otherwise miserable duty more palatable,” Hamilton said. “That ended up being one of those conversations on the ground in Florida, and that first group we spoke to said if we could have a better connection to internet or wifi, if I can could Facetime, my family. I haven’t seen my family in a week or 10 days.” He said they reached out to ATT and Verizon at the scene, and they brought in additional trailers that boosted the wifi signal. “It was something as simple as that,” he said. “Because of the huge hot conditions, a lot of the folks were having

issues with their feet in their boots getting super swampy. They were having blisters and having skin come off their feet. Prior to us getting there, they put out a call for socks to be donated. Unfortunately, a lot of these donated socks were polyester blends, cheap, nasty socks, and what these folks needed were some good quality woolen socks that keep the moisture away.” Hamilton said his team educated the commanders about how they could support the first responders better. “They were having the responders meet with the family members, which is good and impactful for the family members, but it’s really difficult on the responders,” he said. “We provided education about how to take care of the responders. We were at the fire stations making sure the folks who responded and cleared the incident were doing okay. That is more of the traditional work we do in those situations. We were seeing how they were unpacking these situations themselves and seeing if they needed to speak with a clinician or if it was good enough for them to have a conversation with an outside peer support person.” Getting a first responder to aid to help them unpack their experience, he said, can be situational. Does someone who has a lot of those experiences reach a point where it becomes too much, or is it someone who hasn’t had many experiences in such a situation? “We’re always looking for those different cues, but the other thing to keep in mind is how recently did this happen,” he said. “The vast majority of the time, the human mind is incredibly resilient. Most people can reconcile those experiences without seeing a clinician or getting further help, but sometimes it will take two, four, or six weeks to unpack that experience.” Hamilton advises responders to remove themselves from the emotion at an incident and remember they did not cause the incident. They do everything humanly possible to give people their best chance for survival. for the complete story, visit tricountysentry.com

S’MORE

Connor Forbes

By Connor Forbes

Now I have to imagine most of you out there already know how to make a s’more. But just in case you don’t lets fix that!

T

O start, a s’more is a classic campfire dessert. It consists in it’s most basic form as a graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow. However, I will give you some fun ideas to make your s’more next level. Let’s make s’mores! Ingredients - 1 graham cracker split in half to make 2 squares - 1-2 large marshmallows - Chocolate to cover 1 full graham cracker square To Make Prepare the graham cracker by splitting the graham cracker in half lengthwise and covering one square with an equally big piece of chocolate. Roast marshmallow on an open flame, like a campfire or stove burner. Some people like to carefully roast their marshmallows to a beautiful golden brown. I am not one of those people, I

like to burn my marshmallow crisp (see picture). Burned sugar has a flavor of crème brulee and it also saves a lot of time. Place burnt marshmallow on the chocolate and use the second graham cracker square

to close. Like a sandwich. EAT! Some super fun substitutes or additions include but are not limited to, peanut butter cups, fluffed marshmallow, peanut butter, peanut brittle, chocolate turtles,

melted chocolate and even gummy bears. Use your imagintation and go crazy! If you have Instagram and take pictures of your creation, please tag me, @connor.cooks!

questions I ask, the stories I write, and everyone would be a lot happier if I followed the formula trash journalism model that everyone accepts as normal. I refuse to believe that elected officials I’ve written about aren’t being vindictive and hate me because I

have the audacity to cover Republican, Democrat, and Social Democrat stories during an election cycle, and I will never be sorry that I write fair and unbiased stories about everything. I keep reporting about the issues even when people email me and tell me

they’re happy because they stopped advertising in a paper that reports on both sides of a political issue. I keep reporting even when I email someone and ask for a comment about a challenging issue, and the elected official says the email never reached its

destination. I’ll take the high road and hold onto the belief that we didn’t elect sleazeballs who only accept their point of view—the ignorant USA haters who hate two-sided debates. People hate me anyway, so I’ll just hold true to my values.

A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 to the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state, will be held by duly appointed trustee. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http:// www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the trustee: CA-18848192-NJ. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916-939-0772, or visit this internet website http:// www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-18-848192-NJ to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. The undersigned trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the mortgagor, the mortgagee, or the mortgagee’s attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. As required by law, you are hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations. TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 2021 undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 090427-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. OXNARD SHORES ART WALK IS

CREATIVE BEAUTY

Penny’s work is available at By Chris Frost we are still masked, and we are grateful to have an outlet, ” she pennyf.com. Tri County Sentry

Oxnard-- The Fifth Art Walk & The Shores, Saturday, August 21, brought artists together selling their works of art, meeting people, and proving the artistic community is alive and well in Oxnard.

A

TTENDEES started their trip at the corner of Wooley Road and Harbor Boulevard and visited pop-up locations throughout Oxnard Shores, each offering different and unique treasures for purchase. Artist Penny Fitzgerald creates abstract oil and acrylic paintings, and she is grateful for the pop-up events during the Covid-19 restrictions. “Luckily, it’s outside, and

said. Fitzgerald had one wall of paintings she called “her serenity.” “After Covid and everything going on, I needed some feeling of peace,” she said. “There’s a little angst going on here (pointing at one picture), and I kind of segued into these more gentle paintings. It was a stress reliever for me. It’s kind of an ocean, but it isn’t because it’s not typically the colors of the ocean. This whole area is about inner calm.” The painting had a thick and heavy texture with an acrylic paint texture at the base. “Then I layer and layer until I get what I want,” she said. “With oil, you don’t have to do those things. Oil naturally blends and does beautiful things. I love working in oil more than acrylic because it dries quickly, and you can manipulate it like oil paintings.”

Christina Altfeld is a printmaker and photographer, and she had some printmaking on an etching press on display. “I will hand-ink plates and print them on a press,” she said. “My other method is that I work with cyanotypes, which is an alternative photographic method. You have to expose the image to UV light.” She also had lots of monotypes in her bin with polymer etchings. Altfeld changed her strategy when Covid-19 hit. “I just hunkered down at home,” she said. “I have a studio at home, and I belong to a group of printmakers as well. I did a lot of work at home and kept printing and fooling around. The shows stopped, there have been some virtual exhibits that I’ve participated in, and things are slowly starting to come back. We’ll see.”

She said she’s always been an artist at heart. “I’ve always done something creative all my life,” she said. “I had a freelance photography business for many years doing weddings and family portraits. Once I was introduced to printmaking, that took over my life.” Her work is available at https://cmadesigns.com/. Jeri Sutherling specializes in abstract realism and had an eclectic group of her pictures on display. “I like to paint in different styles,” she said. “I primarily paint with oil, and I used to paint in acrylic as well. I’ve even done a little pastel, but oil is primarily my medium.” One picture she had with waves, she said, took her a lot of time to complete. “When I paint a picture, and I take all of my own photographs. I paint from photographs. I try to put the viewer as being in the picture as well,” she said. “I’m getting a lot of feedback from people that it’s the way they feel, so I think I’m doing it well.” Sutherling looks for things that will inspire her, but she works the best in the middle of the night. “That’s when I come to my

creative thoughts of how to arrange a picture because not all photographs make a good picture,” she said. “What I do is think about the composition, and maybe I’ll start putting the composition on canvas, and then come to the conclusion that maybe a portion of it is not working, so I have to rethink it. My best thoughts come when I’m sleeping; then I’ll wake up and think, oh, I know what I am going to do with that. Usually, it solves a problem.” Sutherling showed her artistic talents when she was a child. “We were kind of poor, and my parents couldn’t afford art lessons,” she said. “My mother would take me to museums and little classes. What I didn’t know was that my mother was a painter, and she had started at the Chicago Art Institute, and she had to quit. She didn’t tell me this until she was 72 years old.” She said her art career didn’t start until she was 55. “I started taking lessons at a junior college and got serious about it and started taking lessons at the Kline Academy of Fine Art, and I studied with some of the really great artists of our time,” she said. jerisutherlingart.com. Laura Skidmore had a full display of crocheted items, doll clothes, decorations, and stuffed animals out for sale. “I also do Chalk Couture, signs, and handbags,” she said. Skidmore said her children tend to inspire her, and they’ll ask she can make something for them, and she does. “I sometimes do wake up with new ideas, and I have to sketch them out and start writing patterns,” he said. “My mom taught me to crochet when I was eight. I used to crochet at school, during recess, and at home. I stopped when I was in high school, but in college, I took it up again, haven’t stopped, and I started selling.” She is grateful for the popup art shows. “Last year, everything was canceled,” she said. “As soon as I heard this was happening, I was so excited and started going through what I had and wrote down what else I wanted to make. I’m thankful for everyone who organized this because it is a lot of work.” Skidmore’s creations are available on Etsy and Instagram. For more information, visit artwalkoxnardsores.com.
