NGUYEN CALLS PAST MANAGEMENT PROMISES INAPPROPRIATE
BY THE SEA
By Chris Frost Tri County Sentry Oxnard-- The story about affordable housing in the City of Oxnard picks up with City Manager Alex Nguyen pointing out there were promises made by past management. The council, Tuesday, October 5, approved the sale of Oxnard Community Development Commission Successor Agencyowned property located on Sixth and Seventh streets to the Oxnard Housing Authority. The hearing drew controversy because many community members preferred a park instead of housing, and council members felt blindsided about promises made about a park. Nguyen said management could not make promises and bind the city. “It shouldn’t happen, it can’t n Nguyen, see page 5

roars into the harbor
Channel Islands--The Ponies by the Sea Car Show, Ventura County’s longest-running Mustang and Ford Car show, returned to the harbor, Sunday, October 10.
T
HE event, presented by the Tri-County Mustang Club, featured a dessert and food truck, vendors, a raffle, lots of show shirts for sale, and of course great cars. Proceeds raised went to the Guide Dogs of America. Car Show Co-Chair Marcia Fryslie is happy to be back at the show after losing 2020 due to Covid-19 and said the harbor was happy to work with the group. “We reserved the date last year to make sure we could be here in this spot,” she said. “We have
127 cars, from what I’m told, which is a record for us.” Fryslie said she caught Mustang fever from a 1965 Mustang that she idolized when she was a five-year-old. “It was the headlights in the back that, for some reason, I liked,” she said. “I bought my first car on March 10, 1985, and I still have it, my 1965 coupe. I joined the club in 1990 in college, and I’ve been with them ever since.”
S h e h a s n’t spent a ton of money to maintain h e r Mustang. “I don’t drive it a whole lot, so the more you drive it, the more things fall apart and wear out,” she said. “It’s been crashed a couple of times; not my fault, of course, I got it painted a couple of times. It’s not a show car, but I don’t put a lot of money into it anymore. I like it the way it is.” The first time she drove her Mustang and heard the engine roar gave her a great feeling. “I’m a pretty cool chick,” she said. “When you’re a teenage
girl, and my car was lifted in the back and had bigger tires in the back. It didn’t look like something a teenage girl would drive. I liked the attention it got me, to be honest with you.” She said the newer Mustang E is not her favorite. “I wish they wouldn’t have called it a Mustang anything,” she said. “It’s not a Mustang to me. The taillights look the same, but I wasn’t crazy about them naming it that. It was a disservice to Mustangs.” Fryslie said the Tri-County Mustang Club has been together for almost 40 years. “Tri-County used to be San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura County,” she said. “The northern people dropped off, so we made Los Angeles one of the three counties. This is a charity car show, so all the money after n Ponies, see page 7
Supervisors form seal change subcommittee By Chris Frost Tri County Sentry Ventura-- On a split vote, 4-1, the Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, October 12, voted to form a subcommittee to examine updating the county seal. The item was brought forward by Supervisors Carmen Ramirez and Linda Parks, and Parks said there is a county logo out there, but the seal was created in the 1960s and does not reflect what’s happening today.
“It has the county being recognized for rocket testing and atoms, and that isn’t what our county says today, among other things,” Parks said. Ramirez said she remembers when there was a discussion before she got on the board, and she believes it’s time for a real update.
“I think the logo, not the seal we’re using right now, is very nice,” she said. “It talks about some of the natural features of our county, which are amazing. I really think it would be good to have something that has more input from folks and reflects some of the unique features of our county, which are the islands that
we have, the endangered species of the condor, which is coming back, and hopefully will survive.” Parks said there is a lot of opportunities to update the seal. “The thought was to have a subcommittee of Supervisor Ramirez and myself to look at some options and bring it back to our board for consideration,” Parks said. “In January 2023 will be our county’s 150th anniversary, so it would be nice to have it all in place by then.” n Supervisors, see page 5

WHAT HAPPENED TO TELEVISION? By Chris Frost Tri County Sentry Oxnard-- Here’s a newsflash, and it doesn’t happen as often as you’d expect, but Daisy, Buddy, Ziggy, and I are spending the day at home being domestic.
O
F course, my version of a day at home being domestic is different than most since I just finished a phone interview, sent out a bunch of work-related emails, and now I’m writing this little piece of what wanders through my strange world. So, while sitting here doing nothing, I got a text that my cable bill was due. I tried to log in and pay the bill, but I forgot my login information, and for some reason, I forgot to hit remember me the last time I logged in. Okay, so I did something I don’t usually do and opened the paper bill and did a double-take when I saw that my bill is now $256 a month for phone, cable, and internet.

What really kills me about this is how little time I spend watching television that actually has new content. It’s ironic; I have always loved television, starting at age 5 when I would watch The Soupy Sales Show and do “The Mouse” in front of the television. I didn’t stop there; I watched The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Super Chicken, It’s About Time, Lost n Frosted, see page 12

NEWS Community input needed for redistricting By Chris Frost things like having a similar Tri County Sentry language that is spoken Oxnard-- The story about the September 30 redistricting meeting in the City of Oxnard continues with Kristen Parks from the National Demographics Corporation (NDC) defining Communities of Interest.
A
C OMMUNIT Y of Interest is a population that shares common social or economic interests that should be included within a single district for the purposes of effective and fair representation. “When we want to hear from the public about communities of interest, what we’re talking about is the geographic area that can be subjectively defined by the people who are in that area that have common interests,” she said. “Oftentimes, those common interests are common experiences, common problems or concerns that they might bring to the city council to address, or even
or a similar experience with living a certain park, school, or having certain concerns about traffic. It’s very subjective. There is no wrong way to define your community as long as you can tell us what brings you together and where in Oxnard you’re located, so we can take that testimony and consider it when we are looking at the district boundaries.” She said a good way to think about a district is to consider it a collection of neighborhoods and communities grouped together within one district. “We want to figure out which neighborhoods and communities should be together in each district,” Parks said. “Other things you can think about are zoning and the general plan. This is very open, and NDC is happy to provide a lot of the data mapped on maps to help identify these communities. I do not want to suggest or tell anyone in Oxnard what their community is. That is what you all have expertise in, and ultimately, we will be inviting the public to, if they
Councilman Bert Perello want to go beyond making that comment and testimony about their communities of interest, priorities for district boundaries. We want to invite them to use mapping tools if they wish to draw district maps.” She said there are tools available, and they are working to get them loaded with the official data. “Unfortunately, we had to wait so long for that data,” she said. “We do want to make sure that when we give the public these tools, we’re giving them tools that are accurate that they can use to draw population balance maps for the city. There is an online
(File photo by Chris Frost)
mapping tool that will be made available, and we will also have online tutorial videos and step-by-step instructions on how to use the online tool. However, we recognize that not every member of the public has the time, interest, or even internet or computer access or savvy to use those tools, so we’ll be creating for Oxnard paper maps that can be printed or made available or downloaded. You can draw on them at home to draw your district maps.” Parks said the tools would empower the public and drive the process forward. Councilman Bert Perello said the dates are set for the
public hearings, but he wants to know where the public hearings will be. “That depends on the city,” Parks said. “As you have the virtual option available, but as that changes, and there is a desire to have public hearings open to the public to the chamber, then that’s an option as well.” Perello asked Parks to define the protected class. “The protected classes we are talking about are the Hispanic voters, AfricanAmerican voters, AsianAmerican voters, AmericanIndian voters, and Pacific Islander voters,” Parks said. “There is a list available.” Mayor John Zaragoza asked if the final count is 202,614 people. “You said potentially in some areas we had an undercount in the south area,” he said. “Across the City of Oxnard,” Parks said. “We don’t actually know that because that’s not what we’re here to do. We’re not here to identify where the undercount is. We’re here to use the data we have to draw the best districts that we can for the districts in Oxnard. It is something to be aware of certainly, if you expect to see more growth. The projected numbers are higher than what we are getting from the census.” Councilman Gabe Teran asked where people could access the data online. “The mapstitude software can be linked directly from the city’s website,” Parks said. “What that will do is
take them to another website where they do need to create an account to login, and they can use that to directly submit the maps. We work with an outside vendor, so a software company is doing that. NDC doesn’t have control over the timeline, so I don’t want to give you a date, but we are working with them. Just this week, we got that data, so we are hoping that within two to three weeks that all of that will be updated.” During public comments, Debbie Mitchell said her councilmember has helped the community identify Oxnard as a whole community. “By creating communities of interest, I would hope that we the public not take these boundaries of difference, but rather boundaries of voices that come together behind the whole of Oxnard,” she said. “For my specific community, as a resident in the harbor and beach area, I feel our needs are a complex balance of maintaining the area we live in and preserving and protecting the visitorserving nature of our community for all of Oxnard and beyond. Our ability to do this is sometimes discounted as being seen as the rich people at the beach. Our community is economically diverse, and also most who live in this area are in support of and welcome the visitors to the beach and the harbor. Our concerns on water quality in the harbor impact all visiting the harbor and the beach, as well as our concerns on infrastructure and capital improvement projects.” Councilman Oscar Madrigal said the council wants a lot of public participation in the redistricting process. “We did receive a lot of participation last time with maps,” he said. “The winning map was actually presented by the public. It was not a city map. We went to districts for a reason. Many will argue that it was the threat of a lawsuit, but at the end of the day, we as a city did not fight the process of going to districts. It was for proper representation, and that can’t be lost in this process.”

NEWS Camarillo Library works through challenging year By Chris Frost Tri County Sentry Camarillo-- The Camarillo Library Board, Wednesday, September 29, received an update from Director Mandy Nasr, who said they had a great turnout for a One City One Book event Saturday, September 25.
S
HE said Author Kate Quinn discussed her latest novel, called “The Rose Code.” “We welcomed 89 people in our library community room for the event,” she said. “I want to express my gratitude to Vice Mayor Shawn Mulchey, who gave a wonderful introduction to the author and our incredible friends’ group that supports this program year after year.”
Nasr said Camarillo Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by offering a virtual children’s book talk with local author and educator Doctor Kathleen Contreras. She discussed her bilingual book, Braids Transeitas. “October is also Family History Month, and the library is commemorating with programs that reflect on family histories and identifies with a special scrapbooking program for adults,” she said. “They have take-home family activities that focus on genealogy. You can sign up for these activities on our online event calendar or stop by any library service desk.” She said they recently submitted their annual public report and said this had not been a typical year. “The library staff had to think of new and creative ways to engage with patrons when our doors were closed to the public,” she said. “Curbside service was our primary method

of circulating materials. Between July 1, 2020, and April 24, 2021, our library circulated 85,025 items and facilitated 30,397 pickups. Patrons were thrilled that they could pick up their library books and materials in a safe way. Many patrons called this
the best thing ever.” She said if patrons wanted something instantly, they could use the library’s electronic resources to check out an e-book or audiobook through platforms like Libby Overdrive and Hoopla. “In the fiscal year 2019 to 2020, our electronic materials checkout was 92,095,” she said. “In the fiscal year 2020-2021, it was 124,633, which is a difference of 32,538. We are continuing to expand our electronic resource collection to meet this popular demand.” She said when the library couldn’t offer in-person programming; they focused on virtual engagement. “Our Russell Fisher Business Collection Coordinator hosted a variety of business collection programming and workshops to support local business recovery,” she said. “Our adult literacy coordinator continues to engage adult learners with online
meetings and discussions. While curbside was successful, nothing can compare to the joy when we were able to reopen our doors to the public on April 27. In May, we averaged 457 visits a day, and that jumped up to an average of 543 daily visits in June. In those two short months, from April till June, we circulated 67,752 items.” Nasr said she was grateful to the city staff and the community for their dedication and support for the library during a challenging year. Mayor Charlotte Craven said the library exemplifies flexibility. “I was going to say something similar, but you guys have pivoted multiple times in the past 18 months,” Library Board President Susan Santangelo said. “The library is so beloved in the community, and I appreciate all the efforts of the staff and everybody.” The Library Cafe has reopened, and the hours are from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

happen, and under my administration, it won’t happen,” he said. “If anyone tells you a prior manager made a promise, if it is true, it was inappropriate.” He said when looking at the city’s situation, it faces a struggle between two significant needs. “What makes it worse is the state is the one that has the big stick over this,” Nguyen said. “If it were only up to us, we would have had a lot more room to maneuver.” He asked if parcel four is as big as the other two parcels combined. “If that’s the case, is it not possible for the council to give us direction and proceed with that as a park,” he said. Assistant City Manager Ashley Golden said the size of the lots is about the same. “The intent of the Parks Commission was to take the remainder of that block,” she said. “Those two parcels are the ones held by the successor agency. One lot is privately held, and the other is owned by the city.” Nguyen asked if housing is possible on lot four. “Our recommendation back to the council back in November was that it was not well suited for affordable
housing,” Golden said. “The density and perspective indicated that we would be surplusing that.” Nguyen said the area had been an ongoing saga for many years. “If a prior council did not make a commitment, this council should have the freedom to do as it sees appropriate,” he said. “I want to find a way for the council to make a decision that they can all be happy with, versus feeling like they were blindsided or trapped into a corner by staff.” Councilman Bert Perello said the motion as it stands is a report presentation on median parks versus singling out one parcel over another. “My concern is that we are going to use (parcels) five and six or one and four; that’s not what the staff recommendation was,” he said. Nguyen said he understood but noted that it wasn’t the staff ’s decision. “I want to make sure we have a good decision-making process here, and apparently, we have failed at that with how we presented this,” he said. “I’m trying to salvage this, so you’re comfortable with whatever decision you wind up with.”
Golden said the city can study the two potential layouts. “It’s still subject to the Surplus Land Act, and it still surplus to the disposition process with the successor agency, which requires the oversight board. It’s possible to study, but we are not the ultimate decision body on
some of these items.” Todd Mooney from the Successor Agency said if the property were declared as surplus, it would be offered through the regular surplus land act process. “The successor agency would make the decision about who they want to sell the property to,” he said.
“That would be subject to review by the oversight board and its findings.” Councilwoman Gabriela Basua thanked Nguyen for trying to salvage the item. “Based on the surplus land act, there’s no way that we can say as a council that it will be a park,” he said. “It will go through an RFP
(Requests for Proposals) that will be the process, and people will come in and say what they would want to do with the property. Lowincome housing would probably be a preference. I would hate to sit here today and say, let’s look at making this a park when in reality, it probably will not happen.”
everything else going on; yesterday we were hit with redistricting maps, and we are doing pandemic issues still,” she said. “I do believe it’s extremely important that we take this process slowly and we involve our community. For that reason, I will not be supporting this to move forward at this time.” Parks said the seal is out of date. “This is not something that I am dying to do, but it needs to be done,” she said. Supervisor Matt LaVere said there are some elements in the seal that are outdated. “In looking at the process, it would be your intention to involve the community and get feedback on what they would want in the new seal,” he said. Parks said some graphic artists would add their
suggestions on how it would look. “It could be something as simple as taking out a couple of the panels and adding updated ones,” she said. “The idea is to bring it back to the Board of Supervisors. People will have their comments presented then and make suggestions that they’d like.” Long acknowledged that it is a simple process. “I have a lot of concern that this process would be done without community input and making sure we do the right changes for representing for the next 100 years,” she said. “I don’t see this as just change a picture in one field or another. I’m more concerned that it will be creating more polarization and opposition in regards to this seal.”
Ramirez said the current county seal polarizes people, and she’d like to get away from that. “There are some elements that are dated,” she said. “We want to be a modern county with a modern slogan and representation. We have so much that everyone can agree on, and I appreciate you mentioning the Chumash folks, Supervisor Parks. I would like to see us do this, and not later. Our seal is obsolete.” Chief Executive Officer Mike Powers said it’s important, and they discussed it 14-16 months ago. “We said, at that time, we would be undertaking a process to redesign the seal, and we did reach out to the Chumash community that we would be engaging with them on this,” he said.
Supervisors continued from page 1
Supervisor Kelly Long said it sounds “extremely simple” to look at some options. “However, just in the logo that was created for the overarching was not a simple task,” she said. “I’m questioning the timing of this. We’re just coming off the heels of a pandemic, and we’ve seen what has happened in the City of Ventura regarding certain matters. Many people have been turned upside down. We’re not even in meetings to see each other. We’re still on Zoom, and I really believe that this process of looking at the seal is not just a simple change. It’s looking at our community, and I feel that it will make things very polarized.” She asked Ramirez and Parks not to rush the item. “It feels like with

Public Works & Transportation approves Sancon bid By Chris Frost Tri County Sentry Oxnard-- The Public Works & Transportation Committee, Tuesday, October 12, approved the agreement with Sancon Technologies for on-call cured-in-place pipe repair services. The agreement shall not exceed $450,000 for a three-year term ending November 1, 2024. Wastewater Collections Manager Ray Trevino presented the item to the committee and said the Wastewater Division operates and maintains over 400 miles of sewer pipe throughout the collection system. “Our collection system conveys an average of 19 million gallons of wastewater per day with pipe sizes ranging from six-inch to 66 inches in diameter made up of vitrified clay and polyvinyl chloride,” he said. “Pipes in the collection system are subject to failure due to age, cracks, and root intrusion. This can lead to sanitary sewer overflows, sinkholes, and undermining of nearby structures.” He said cured-in-place pipe repair is a common method of fixing pipe failures. “This type of pipe repair lines the inside of a damaged pipe with a reinforced liner,” he said. “The method of repair is trenchless and foregoes the need to excavate a street to perform a pipe restoration.” The Public Works Department released a notice inviting bids for on-call pipe repair services, July 29, and the bids closed, September 2, with five responsive

bids. The bids came from Sancon Technologies, Downstream Services, Instituform Technologies, Southwest Pipeline, and Trenchless Corporation. “Sancon was deemed the lowest responsive bidder by the Public Works Department with prices based on a linear foot basis,” he said. “Under this contract, Sancon will perform cured-in-place pipe repair work on a task-order basis, provide traffic control, pull all the necessary permits, and they will also inspect the pipe before and after, providing the city with an inspection form and a video of the work performed.” The contract will be funded with existing appropriations from Wastewater Fund 611, and the remaining contract balance will be requested in subsequent fiscal years. Committee Member Mayor John Zaragoza said it’s great when the city can make the repairs and not dig up the street.
“If we had to, the old pipe can lead to sanitary overflows and sinkholes,” he said. “With this type of pipe, I think it’s excellent. I think a cure-in-place is a very telling type of a pipe.” Committee Member Vianey Lopez noted the service is an oncall service, and the pipes are not being actively replaced or treated. “Is there any sense of how many of the 400 miles of pipes that have been treated,” she said. Trevino said the city treated 1,500 feet on Pleasant Valley Road several years ago. “That’s still active today,” he said. Lopez asked how long a treated pipe would last. “Sancon has a 40-year guarantee on their product,” Trevino said. Chairman Bert Perello asked what it means to be a responsible bidder and what does it mean to check the bidder’s background. “We check how long they’ve been doing this and any references they may have and if anyone had any issues with their product,” Trevino said. The item passed unanimously.

We have 55 members right now.” She said the club is all about friendship. “We always have food involved,” she said. “We always have a brunch run, and it always has to be a meal at the end of it.” Guide Dogs of America Ventura Area Co-Leader Diana Janke said the Ponies by the Sea Car Show always steps up and supports the dogs and the people who train and raise the dogs. “Because of that, every $5,000 they earn, they sponsor a dog for Guide Dogs of America,” she said. “They’ve sponsored many dogs.” She said the last dog the car show sponsored has graduated and is working with a veteran with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). “They are also sponsoring a 12-week-old puppy named Jude,” she said. “I am raising her, but she is too young to be here because she doesn’t have all her shots.” Janke said Guide Dogs of American needs volunteer puppy raisers to raise the dogs. “It is a 15-18 month commitment, and hopefully, you’ll get hooked and be like the rest of us,” she said. Being a puppy raiser, she said, is a responsible job. “You need to understand what the commitment is, and you need to love a dog,” she said. “You attend meetings and go to training, so we can train you and the puppy. You take them everywhere you go. Food is on you, but vet care, the Guide Dogs take care of.” Janke said if a dog is
working, people who see them should let the dog work. “You don’t want to interfere with the job they are doing for the person,” she said. “With our dogs, one of the things you can ask is can I pet your puppy? If they are behaving and if we are comfortable with what the situation is, we’ll say sure. Can you give me a minute or help me train my dog. We do want them to be socialized, and we do want them to accept, OOOH, it’s a puppy!!!” Bridget Wynnett said she was a Girl Scout Leader, and they had a tour of the facility. “We had a speaker, and we donated money,” she said. “Before computers and cell phones, I kept getting calls saying be a puppy raiser. I said I had my own pet dog and owned chickens, an iguana, a tarantula, and all sorts of animals. They said perfect. That’s exactly what these dogs need. They want them to be active in the community.” Janke said puppy classes start right from week one. “That’s a seven-week course,” she said. “They continue with skills classes outside puppy classes and events. You get a manual that teaches you everything, and it’s easier than raising children. I’ve had 14 puppies and only had three children.” Janke said a service dog is free to someone with a disability. Watching a dog leave the nest and go into service, she said, is an emotionally taxing part of the trainer’s world. “It’s not easy,” she said. “We cry, but we also know they were born for a higher purpose other than to be a
pet. They need to go and do what they are bred to do. We cry, then we get another puppy. When they graduate, we cry again because that’s pretty cool because they changed somebody’s life.” To become a puppy raiser, contact Stephanie Coleman at Guide Dogs of America, guidedogsofamerica.org. “She will talk to you and connect you to the Ventura Area Group,” Janke said. “They meet once a month, and it’s generally people from Ventura, Camarillo, Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Santa Barbara. We do an interview and a home visit. You can go to Stephnie’s orientation and learn what the whole commitment is.” Ken Kraut brought his 1965 Mustang with a 289 engine to the show.
“It was my Dad’s car originally,” he said. “He wasn’t the original owner; he bought it in 1969 from a neighbor for $700. At every car show, I get at least two or three offers for the original price, which I am not going to take, obviously.” He said when his Dad could no longer drive the car, it became his. “We restored it from that point,” he said. “It’s a C-Code engine with only 200 horsepower. It’s not high performance. It doesn’t weigh much, so it still goes pretty well. I learned how to drive in this car in the mid1970s, and I also had four younger brothers that also learned how to drive in it. It survived.” He said his Dad painted the car when he drove it to work every day, and at one point, it was British racing green. “When it became mine, we stripped it down to bare metal and painted it the original color, tropical turquoise,” he said. “It’s been redone from the ground up.” He said Sue Smith and her repair shop did his disc brakes and restored the engine compartment. “It’s just a matter of knowing how to detail,” Smith said. “There are no computers in these cars. We
took everything out of the engine compartment, we cleaned it down, and some of the areas we stripped down to the bare metal. We repainted and got everything plated correctly and put it back together.” Jill Kraut says she enjoys being the “happening chick” driving around with her husband, Ken. “As long as it’s a nice day like this,” Jill said. “I’ve driven it a few times, but I prefer not to.” Jason Miller brought his 2015 V6 Mustang that he bought used from a dealership in Utah. “I brought it back to California,” he said. “When I got it, initially I wanted a red interior. When I got there, I got this Tuscany bourbon interior which was a surprise. I said you know what? It looks pretty nice.” For the last five or six years, he made every modification under the sun to his Mustang. “From the interior to the exterior, from the engine to the suspension,” he said. “It’s a work in progress and a daily drive.” Jason said the car has 275 rear wheel horsepower. “I designed this not to haul ass because it’s a V6,” he said. “One of the first modifications that I did was put on a 1968 Mustang badge. I saw that and said, okay, let’s make this theme; if Ford really cared about quality and performance, let’s give it this European spec. I de-badged it, left this one Mustang badge on the front, and over time. I
worked on it. The design is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a timeless brand.” Alessandra Serrano brought her 2018 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack that she named Wonder Woman. “It’s a Royal Crimson Metallic Clear Coat, so it’s a one-year-only color for Ford, and they discontinued it,” she said. She enjoys driving fast but said she has to be in control. “It’s a lot of power,” she said. “It’s 460 horsepower with 420 torque in the rear, so you have to have control.” She said Wonder Woman is fast and has lots of potential. “The theme is Wonder Woman because of the color, and it’s based out of the 2017 Wonder Woman movie,” she said. “When the color came out, and we saw it, we had to have it.” Cerrano said her husband, who owns a 1995 Mustang GT with an original engine and transmission, got her interested in driving her own Mustang. “We bought a 2017 GT Premium Package, so this is our third Mustang,” she said. When she’s in control and opening the Mustang up on the open road, she said freedom runs through her mind. “Lots of freedom and smiles,” she said with a chuckle. “She (Wonder Woman) puts a smile on my face when I drive her. For a weekend fun car-warrior, it had to be a Mustang with a performance pack, and it had to be six-speed.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 758-8052 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.HOMESEARCH.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 088404-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the
property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 088404-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 136657. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this internet website www.servicelinkASAP.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case Ts# 136657 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. NO TIME TO DIE

in Space, the Dick Van Dyke Show, Room 222, The Brady Bunch, and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. It was different when my father got home, and we would watch Emergency, Adam 12, Barnaby Jones, Cannon, Columbo, Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law, and a whole lot of shows I don’t remember. My mom used to watch Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and MASH. They both loved The Dean Martin Show and Laugh in, but for some reason, when Laugh in was on, Good Ole’ Pop would swear at the television. The J-Train still watches television but shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, and something called Claws that does not interest me at all. She records them and likes to binge-watch when she’s trying to get rid of me. Since I am sitting around doing nothing, I investigated all the shows on the traditional television networks, and they seem way too boring to watch. I don’t watch reality tv, because my life is kind of like a reality show. To quote Rodney Dangerfield, “It ain’t easy being me.” I decided to get my kids involved and see what they watch, and they told me what I needed to do was sign up for Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime to get the really good shows. So, all I need to do is spend more money? Try to understand; television used to be free and I loved all the shows. I said no more subscriptions to watch tv, and they laughed it off and called me a cheap old man. I am what I am, I guess, and I’ll spend my days watching networks like MeTV, TV Land, and the news channels. I can live with that. I’m an old man, and I watch old tv shows.

the scene I was most anticipating certainly delivers. The “Knives Out” reunion between Craig and de Armas is filled with fun chemistry and action. I can’t see de Armas in another movie soon enough, and if casting directors weren’t breaking down her door before, they will be after her action scenes in this movie. The problem is that what the scene delivers in quality, it lacks in quantity. This movie is 163 minutes long and de Armas isn’t in it for more than ten. But those less-than-ten minutes are the highlight of the film. Back in 2012 I wrote that the best thing about “Skyfall” was James Bond’s vulnerability. It was nice to see a more human side of the character. But with “No Time to Die,” I feel like we’re getting too much vulnerability, like he’s so emotional throughout the movie (and granted, he has a lot to be emotional about) that he’s no longer a recognizable version of the character. This will be Craig’s last turn as James Bond, and it feels right. Five movies is a satisfying number, and the series can only play the “pulled back into action after he tries to retire” card so many times before the trope is overdone. Maybe this last entry would have been disappointing if it had opened on time, maybe it falls short of expectations because of the 18-month wait, all I know is that I’m underwhelmed.
Last spring, the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” became the first movie to be pushed back because of the pandemic. The subsequent 18-month delay made me crave the film even more, and I confess my expectations might have gotten a little too high. In fact, it’s probably for the best that the film was delayed, because if it had opened in April of 2020, it would have been less than a year removed from “Avengers: Endgame,” which it is conspicuously trying to emulate. Director Cary Joji Fukinaga has crafted less of a Bond movie and more of an MCU movie with James Bond in place of Tony Stark.

OND (Daniel Craig) makes an effort to retire from spy work and settle into married life with wife Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), but their honeymoon gets interrupted by the remnants of the evil SPECTRE organization. He accuses her of setting up the attack, which hurts her emotionally, and ultimately puts her on a train out of the country with the intention of never seeing her again. We cut to five years later (reminiscent of “Endgame”) when Bond’s CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), accompanied by State Department liaison Logan Ash (Billy Magnussen), lures him out of retirement to try to stop SPECTRE. He’s joined by rookie agent Paloma (Ana de Armas) and in many ways the mission is more successful than expected, but in others it’s a total disaster
that puts the fate of the world at risk. Bond has to go back to work for MI-6, meaning that he gets to meet up with old friends M (Ralph Fiennes), Q (Ben Whishaw), and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), as well as Nomi (Lashana Lynch), a younger agent who has been assigned Bond’s old 007 number. He interrogates
arch nemesis and former SPECTRE head Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), who indirectly directs him back to Madeleine, who is the key to Safin (Rami Malek), the mastermind of a DNAbased plot to kill millions. Maybe the biggest disappointment of the film is Malek’s villain. He’s a frightening force in an early flashback scene, but once he’s unmaked
(literally), he’s just another stock villain who insists that humanity can only be saved if he kills a great deal of it. He also likes to tend to his garden, in case the parallels to Thanos weren’t blatant enough. He controls a trump card that gives him the upper hand on Bond, and he foolishly throws it away after an annoyance. The good news is that
Grade: C “No Time to Die” is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, some disturbing images, brief strong language and some suggestive material. Its running time is 163 minutes. Contact Bob Garver at rrg251@nyu.edu.
