STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING WALK foc us e s o n a worl d wide problem
By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Ventura-- The Museum of Ventura County had an important and influential event, March 7, as the 13th Annual STOP Human Trafficking Walk came off without a hitch and raised awareness about the problem throughout the world.
T
HE event featured survivors, resources for people who need them, and a voice that said “We do this, so others don't have to go through the crime.” The group left the museum and went to Main Street in Ventura, proceeded to California Street, and stopped at all the different intersections with their signs to get a good response from the motorists. From there, the group crossed over and returned to the museum on Main Street. Local Organizer Debbie Gohlke from the Oxnard Soroptimist Club said the idea for the walk to STOP Human Trafficking came from the Soroptimist International of the America's, which is their federation. "We're in 22 countries, n Human Trafficking, see page 6
Science Carnival inspires young minds
Oxnard-- Future scientists were powered up on March 7, as the Annual Science Carnival at Rio Vista Middle School brought the sciences to life in a big way. The event, sponsored by California State University Channel Islands, featured 120 fun science activities for kids ages Pre-K through the eighth grade to experience real science activities. The big crowd walked from table to table learning, while a disc jockey played songs like Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science”, along with Thomas Dolby's "She blinded me with science." The weather was beautiful, and snacks were available to feed the stomachs of kids with hungry minds. The first stop upon arrival was the fake injury booth where kids received faux cuts
and bruises, and Logan McCoy had a blast. "Getting a fake wound is fun," he said. Dad Tim McCoy thinks the science carnival is a great learning experience for the kids. "It's hard to get kids interested in things like science and math, and this gives you a practical application," he said. "I was pretty good in science class. I took physics in high school. I specialize in computers, so I keep up with all the latest technologies. This one (Logan) takes apart the computers, so he has the technology part down. Technology is inclusive in science, but it is a different aspect of science." Mom Kristin McCoy said Logan gets most of his homework done during his n Science Carnival, see page 3
Ramirez challenges Flynn to take a no smear campaign pledge By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- Primary season is over, and Ventura County District Five Supervisor Candidate Carmen Ramirez is back on the campaign trail and setting her sights on a victory in Nov. She and her opponent, Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn, advanced to a runoff as neither one received 50 percent of the vote during the primary. It was business as usual at the Greater Oxnard Organization of Democrats (The GOOD Club),
March 10, as volunteers continued filling out postcards for Ramirez and continue to stand behind their candidate. As she and Flynn move forward, Ramirez challenges her opponent to take the no smear campaign pledge. Anyone who thinks about planning a smear campaign against her opponent, Ramirez says, don't waste your time. "Think about your history of contributing to our civil discourse and making good decisions," she said. "It's dragging us deeper into the ground. I'm not going to participate in that."

During the primary season, she was the target of a negative campaign ad and got accused of taking a junket to China on taxpayer money. "They left out all the details that it was a normal trade delegation visit where you promote tourism and business between the two countries," she said. "I went with other elected officials from all over the state, including Republicans, and someone who was the mayor of North Las Vegas, who was trying to get a Chinese company to build their electric cars there." The mayor of Ontario Calif. wanted to get a Chinese company to
fly to Ontario, and they did. "It was legitimate," Ramirez said. "I didn't pocket any money." She wants to debate the issues, and just the issues, that Ventura County residents find essential. "Where do we stand and let the voters decide what they like," Ramirez said. "What have we done, what's our record, and what is our position going to be on county policy." The message stays the same for Carmen, as she stands for jobs, housing, employees, and companies who treat their employers well. n Ramirez, see page 2

HPC offers a female touch in a friendly spot By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com
Port Hueneme--The Hueneme Patient Collective (HPC), is the only female-owned cannabis dispensary in Ventura County, and while others look to get started, they lead the way in customer service and client retention. The dispensary is located on the green mile and offers service that is second to none for the patient. Additionally, they are integral members of the community. While some companies do good things and get rewarded at tax time with a write-off, HPC does the good work because they want to be a good community neighbor and receives no tax incentive. " W h e n patients come in, they don't have to tell us what they want," dispensary owner Beth Thuna said. "I've seen it happen, where Shawn, who is one of our other general managers, will say he wants that, and the patient will say that's exactly what he wants. That is the personal service you get here. You're not a number; you're a person. We are friendly here, and we don't want you to be intimidated." A lot of people walk in loaded with questions, and they feel nervous and a little scared.
"It can be very intimidating to come to a dispensary," she said. "We welcome all questions, and all of our staff is incredibly knowledgeable." Dispensary manager Ericka Tutino engages the community, and you will find her out in the city, often educating the public. "People are curious," Beth said. Ericka said she spoke at the Ventura Women's Group and gave them lots of information about cannabis. "I tell them about all the different c a n n a binoids, so it's not just educating our staff," she said. "We go the extra step to get out there and educate the public without trying to sell anything. I do have one talk coming up for the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks. The men have a lot more challenging questions about cannabis." Ericka agreed with Beth about customer service, and she noted that they can see over 700 people in one day. "Somebody on our staff will know a person by their first name eight of 10 times," she said. "We can greet them when they walk through the door by their first n HPC, see page 3
NEWS Clean up your mess By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- You know, I spend a lot of time covering a ton of stories in the area, and that list is growing. In the last few weeks, I have been to Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Camarillo, and Ventura.
W
HEN I put together the paper each week, I try to find fun things, important issues, and news that will keep you up to date on what's going on in my home city, Oxnard. Stories that will educate, inform and give you power. Knowledge is power. With all that said, I went over to the Oxnard Science Fair this past weekend, and it was a great event. Youngsters got the chance to explore, have fun, and learn why science is so important and how important science is in our society. That brings me to my point; I thought a good outline for the story would be a brief description and interview kids, parents, people who study the sciences, and why people who work in the sciences love their work. That worked fine until I approached the table that said energy careers. I walked up, handed them my business card, and started talking about fossil fuels, and they stopped me and said they couldn't speak to the media. I can't help but think about all the money spent by the California Resources Corporation to sway the voters in the recent Fifth District
Ventura County Supervisors election. Now I devoted a lot of ink to the election, and I learned an awful lot about the issue, and I never got a call saying “hey get your facts straight.” So we'll accept it as the truth. Ventura County has 19 uncapped wells that need to be cleaned up; they have power plants that need to be taken down, and the water and soil need to be cleaned up in those areas. Furthermore, there is talk about them declaring bankruptcy and leaving us with the bill. You know, when I was a child, my mother always taught me to clean up my mess. I fought and wanted to go out, play with my friends, watch television, or whatever I wanted to do before homework. What my mother was teaching me to do was to be clean, organized, disciplined, and responsible. I guess the people running the oil
companies in Ventura County didn't have good parents. Now I am not unrealistic, and we need the oil industry right now. So, here's a neat idea. How about the oil companies address all the governing bodies and present a plan to stop production, start transitioning to clean and renewable energy, retrain their employees, and clean up their mess? If you don't, then I guess we should assume that you don't care about the water, air, and soil in the area. Maybe people should question you hard when you stop at the local grocery store or take a walk with your family. Don't feel inadequate or threatened. People stop my wife and me all the time and ask me about the issues, and maybe if people question all of you guys on what you're going to do about them, you'll change. I've heard candidates talk about how the oil industry is dying, so if you want to help, buy an electric car. My wife and I each have one, and the money we save on gas helps mitigate the finance costs. If that doesn't help, think about the money you pump into your gas tank that goes to the middle east oilproducing countries. Do you want to fund them? I don't. I have a son fighting in the Middle East with the Air Force and helping the oil producers seems a bit crazy. Keep this in mind - all the oil corporations, change is coming. The number of people who want you gone is growing, and they are not going away. Maybe if you act responsibly, they'll work with you and help you transition. Do what your mother says, and clean up your mess.
Ramirez continued from page 1
Ramirez is grateful to everyone who helps and supports her. "There are all the volunteers here at the GOOD Club and people who walk with me all over the city," she said. "Knocking on doors and hearing from people is the most enjoyable part of the campaign and dissuading them of any of the bad information they had about me or the process." The voters have a choice to make, she said, and she doesn't believe in running a negative campaign. "Voters can choose what they want in a supervisor," she said. "Do they want someone who has been a leader on the environment and the
economy? I am the one who initiated, almost from my first vote on the Oxnard City Council, to give preference to local vendors who hire local people." Before she got elected to the Oxnard City Council, Ramirez worked on the living wage ordinance, and she was part of the living wage coalition. "I am really concerned about people's jobs and whether or not they can make enough money to pay their rent and take care of their family," she said. "I am also a strong advocate for affordable housing in the right places. Oxnard has been doing a good job, but we need to do a good job on affordable housing all
over the county, so it's not just Oxnard that bears the burden and all that comes with it, like schools and roads." She also did a lot of work with SOAR (Save Our Agricultural Resources), and the people in Oxnard and Ventura County support SOAR. "It doesn't say we won't build, but it does say that we are not going to build on farmland, except in extraordinary circumstances," she said. "I am the person who supports affordable housing for entry-level people, like teachers and nurses, who have a hard time finding an apartment. This is one of the reasons why companies have
trouble relocating to Ventura County." For a long time, she was a member and former chair of the economic development cooperative of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. They recognize that Ventura County is a great place to live, but if you can't get a residence that's within your means, you can't live here. "We don't want to lose that human capital," she said. "Our children and grandchildren, people who go to school here, become educated, and have skills and degrees. When they can't find work or appropriate housing, they leave." The city and county do not say a lot about the state's minimum wage, but she thinks the county can have a living wage. "If the county has a vendor
who provides any services, janitorial, landscape, security, or healthcare workers, for example, they have to give a living wage," she said. "Living wage is more than what the state or federal government says is the hourly rate. It is what the hourly rate should be with the cost of living, healthcare included. That's the policy in the city." Before she took office at the Oxnard City Council, they didn't want a living wage ordinance. "Years ago, when I was not on the city council, I came with a group of people on the coalition for a living wage to talk to city leaders about getting a living wage policy," she said. "There was some resistance, but ultimately, it did pass." When Oxnard moved into
the retail center era, she said A Street, the former center of downtown, got redesigned to be wavy and curvy with parking in the back. "The city hired a contractor to dig it up and straighten it out again," she said. "The contractor hired people with unstable immigration status. They were poor and treated like absolute slaves. They lived in a big container, and they were charged for their meals. They were not getting the minimum wage, and I am not sure they got paid." The condition those workers lived in, she said, caused outrage. "That's what kicked off the living wage push in our county and city," she said. "I was part of that." This story will continue on March 20.

NEWS Laurie Jordan-Schiffmann is an Angel Among Us By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com EDITOR'S NOTE-- Each month, the Tri County Sentry will feature an angel from our community, who makes their community and the people in the community a better place.
P
ORT Hueneme--Dedi cation to her community and her love of Hueneme Beach drives local resident Laurie Jordan-Schiffmann to make her little corner of the world a better place. If she feels good, Laurie sets her sights on making a difference and goes to the beach and cleans what she can, so the beach looks beautiful. Although Port Hueneme does have beach cleanups, Laurie can't attend on those days. That doesn't stop her from taking it upon herself to get the job done. She trims plants and walkways along the beach, so if she sees something growing on the sidewalk, she'll cut it back to where it should be. She also picks up plenty of garbage. "You find cups, straws, wrapping paper, and you name it," she said. "Just walking down at the beach, and you can see it." She loves being outdoors and working in gardens. "I've planted gardens and cleaned up bushes to make them look pretty like snowmen and swirly bushes," she said. "I naturally see places that need help, and I see so much that needs help. The city can't do it all, but they've ramped it back up in the last couple of years." That wasn't always the case in Port Hueneme, and when they couldn't get as much done, she came to help her community. "When the city started struggling financially, that is when I noticed that things were not getting taken care of the way it was in the first few years I lived here," she said. "The city had all kinds of cutbacks, and I noticed it on my walks or drive-byes at the beach. That is what
inspired me, even more, to help out when I could." She learned to give back as a child, and Laurie spent plenty of time helping her parents in her backyard. "I was 25 when I bought my first house, and I liked having a nice yard," she said. "My neighbors thought that I did a good job, so they hired me to work in their yards. Sometimes, I would go out randomly, pick a place, and make it prettier." She attributes her gardening expertise to her grandmother, Ersie McDowell, while she lived in Portland, Oregon. "My grandmother would hire my sister and me to come and weed her yard," Laurie said. "She taught us how to weed and dig down to get all the roots out so they wouldn't come back." After a while, she developed a knack to trim bushes and trees, so she started doing it randomly. "When I came to California, I didn't know the bushes and trees that grew here, so I started helping a lady who had cancer and learned, by myself, where to trim," she said. "Then, beautiful things would come out." When Laurie arrived in California, she knew no one, and there was a housing shortage. After looking at 365 homes, Laurie and her husband Franz found her place in Port Hueneme. They had to act fast because homes didn't last on the market for long. "This was further away than I wanted my husband to drive," she said. "After looking at a home that needed $100,000 in repairs, I saw a sign that said new construction. My husband lived in eight places while I was in the State of Washington, selling my home. I came down, and this little sign said, look at me. I went to the office with my realtor and found out they were building four homes at a time in development." At that point, they were hopeless and wondered why they came to California. "We got our home with two minutes to spare," she said. "We walked in, and the lady said this is the deal. I saw three couples walk in behind us, and one of

them wanted our house. I was kicking my husband under the table because he doesn't have good hearing, and I told him to put the deposit down." After they arrived in Port Hueneme, she saw beach erosion and wondered what was going on. "That got me invested in the community, and I said let's do something," Laurie said. "I have people come up to me, thank me, and tell me I am doing a good job." Once on the beach, she forgets about the people around her, and she concentrates on her area. "Someone will come up behind me and say oh wow," she said. "Then I remember there are people out here," she said with a chuckle. She'll go as far as she can but admits that sometimes her body can't take it because of injuries. "I've had a bad back for almost my whole life," she said. "When I first came to California, I was rear-ended, and I get neck and back injections. I go out when I feel well." She sets a goal of where she wants to start and end. "Then I become a woman on a mission, and I keep going until I am done, or if my body says stop," she said. "I'll pick a place, and so if the city is not getting to it, and it's overgrown, so I am going to help." To complicate things more, Laurie
shattered her wrist and required surgery and 13 months of not helping her community. "My husband had to wash my hair, dress me, tie my shoes, and everything," she said. "I had zero mobility, and I was helpless. I was going crazy." She decided that if she couldn't walk to the beach, she would drive to the beach. "I've learned to relax, calm my spirit and say okay," she said. "You can only do what you can do." On March first, she lost her motherin-law, Jean Schiffmann, who she called her angel and inspiration. "She would say, Laurie, I have two speeds, slow and slower," she said. "I've learned through all these injuries that I have to slow down and say it's okay. I've always been like bzzzz, and I learned how to slow down and say it's okay from her." The duo did a lot together. "I have no regrets," she said. "I did so much with her." Her belief in God keeps her moving forward, despite the pain. "I talk to him a lot when I am out there," she said. "I serve an audience one, and I think about what he would think of me doing this. That's what keeps me going through all the pain I had to deal with." She calls Sharon Kloeris and her sizzling seniors a Godsend. "I have people from that class who are wonderful, and I do things with," she said. "They are all so friendly and welcoming." She said her Franz calls her a stud who keeps rocking and rolling. "I was a ski and snowboard instructor and had to overcome a lot of things to do that," she said. "There weren't any women on the hill when I started. They didn't even have female boots when I started. I got to teach both my girls and I got to show a lot of different people from different age groups." She sees no end to her community service. "I'm going to do it as long as I can," she said. "If you are out there, you have to make the first step for yourself. No one can do it for you."
HPC continued from page 2
name and have an idea of what they're looking for already. To me, that impresses people and makes them feel so welcomed. We have high volume, but we remember you." People who don't understand the level of cannabinoids and try edibles will find specific dosing in their order. "One of my favorite sayings that Ericka says is to start low and go up slowly," Beth said. "You don't know how an edible is going to affect you. A lot of people, I've heard, had the worst experience with edibles. Especially with homemade items because you don't know how much is in a particular piece of brownie that somebody made. When you go to a fully licensed shop, you'll know precisely the dose you'll get in every little piece. You can micro dose, which is what Ericka recommends, it applies to so many different things, and people can feel secure about an edible because you do it in a slow and steady way." Ericka said some people would buy a bag of gummies, and they don't know. "How are they supposed to know," she said. "Do I eat all of these gummies right now? That will be a bad time if you eat all the gummies." Control is the key. "They're so tasty," Ericka and Beth joked together. Beth added that asking the budtender for instructions is a good idea, and that person can make sure you have a pleasant experience. "Rest assured that when you bite half of that 10 milligrams gummy, you are going to get five milligrams," she said. "That's the nice thing about going to a licensed shop like ours." If you think that you won't get high the first time you try cannabis because your body has a tolerance for THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) made Ericka laugh. n HPC offers, see page 6

after-school program, but if he doesn't finish, she helps him at home. "It's fun to watch the kids learn about science and see how things work," she said. "I learned how to make fake wounds." Neighbor Charlotte Cox had a good time with the McCoys and wants to study science more in school. "I want to experiment about explosions," she said. Cal State University Anthropology Professor Colleen Delaney said her students study people and their material remains. "It's mostly ancient people, but we also have contemporary stuff," she said. "We have artifacts and remains of shellfish and bones so that we can learn about how people
lived in the past." She brought a pawprint set in manufactured stone (brick) from Germany. "It's 500 years old, and it has a pawprint in it," she said. "Either they liked decorations, and they were decorating their walls, or dogs were wandering through a yard when the bricks were drying." Checking a brick by carbon-dating, she said, is not possible. "All the carbon is burned off," she said. "With carbondating, you need organic materials, like shellfish, bones, and charcoal, which is pure carbon." Delaney became interested in Archeology before she saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. "We lived in Texas, and we went and saw a Pompeii
exhibit with plaster casts of the dead people, and I have been hooked ever since," she said. She loves watching the kids learning so many new things. "They have a surprised look when they look at that paw print and not realizing that it's a brick," she said. "The brick is mine, and I got it while I was in college because the shelving collapsed. In Archeology, you need to know where everything comes from. The shelving collapsed when they restored the artifacts, and they lost their provenance, where it actually came from. It lost its scientific value. They gave me the brick as a going-away present." While she explored in Germany, she came across an uneven 500-600 muddy and sandy layer inside a home that
had oxen footprints in mud. "That was the backyard to the house 500 years ago," she said. "They added onto the house, and it was indoors in the basement. They added onto the house." Junior Aria James finds Anthropology to be a fascinating field. "There is so much to it," she said. "From early evolution to looking at cool artifacts like bones, both human and animal, it's always been so interesting to me." James has learned a lot from Delaney. "I learned so much from the Chumash, and it opens my mind to so many different things," she said. "There is a whole lot of interesting stuff I would never have thought of. My personal interest is in the ancient Mayans." The table labeled "energy jobs" refused to speak with the media when asked to review
what they offered. Kristin Quartararo brought her son to try the perception googles, and she said it's a "really cool" experience for all the kids. "They get hands-on experience," she said. "It's put on very well, and the kids are enjoying it." She's an elementary school teacher, and she enjoys teaching science. "The kids enjoy doing any experiments they can get their hands on," she said. "Right now, the kids are studying crayfish, and they enjoy learning about their behavior and structure." Lydia Ballantine works at Moxy, and she brought a bunch of activities that challenge someone's perception. "You're challenged to do everyday things like catching a tennis ball or writing your name, but with the challenge of writing on a mirror or with perception goggles on," she said. "Our museum is all about
exploration and innovation, so a lot of things in the museum focus on kids experimenting and trying things out while using scientific processing skills - while doing it and making observations, testing them, and coming up with theories." She encourages youngsters to get into the process of science and have fun. "When people come to our museum, we want them all to participate," she said. "It is for all ages, and a lot of the people who come through are kids." Environmental Science Student Xavier Dawson was showing the kids how plants grow. "We show them the process where you put a seed in the ground and give it water, sunlight, and it will eventually grow into a plant," she said. "I'm studying environmental science because I want to preserve the planet for a longer period of time."

SENIOR Keep marching to redeem our nation’s soul By Marian Wright Edelman Founder and President Emerita
OUT TO PASTOR
“Fifty-five years ago, a few of our children attempted to march from Brown Chapel AME Church across this bridge. We were beaten, we were tear-gassed. I thought I was going to die on this bridge.
Old deals, new wheels Dr. James L. Snyder A new resident has parked itself in the driveway of the parsonage. After ten years of the old resident parked outside, it is a nice change to see this new one. For the past year, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has been looking for a new vehicle. When I say looking, I really mean, "Looking." She leaves no stone unturned in her quest, especially for a new vehicle. My only qualification for a new vehicle is; can I afford it and does it run. However, not so with my wife. She spent the whole year researching every vehicle that caught her fancy. Just because it catches her fancy, does not mean that it latched onto her pocketbook. For the past year, I have been going through the agony of listening to her complain about what is wrong with this one, and why don't they fix this on that one. She knows more about vehicles than I will ever know. Believe me! After a year of searching, she finally found one that met her credentials. I did not believe it at first. I know it takes something very special to really please her. For her to come home one evening and say, “I finally found the van I want,” was a shocking moment for me. n Out to pastor, see page 5

UT somehow and some way, God Almighty helped me here. We cannot give up now. We cannot give in. We must keep the faith. Keep our eyes on the prize. We must go out and vote like we never, ever voted before. Some people gave more than a little blood. Some gave their very lives. So I say to each and every one of you, especially you young people…Go out there. Speak up. Speak out. Get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” When Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) spoke out at this year’s anniversary commemoration of the “Bloody Sunday” Selma march, he moved many of us who hadjust wished a joyous 80th birthday to this warrior for justice. On March 7, 1965, the nation was shocked when John Lewis and Reverend Hosea Williams set out on a nonviolent march with a
group of 600 people headed from Selma to Montgomery to demand their right to vote and were brutally attacked by lawless state and local law enforcement officials at Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge. The televised images of “Bloody Sunday” and the savage beatings of the marchers—including John Lewis, whose skull was fractured—were a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and in America’s struggle to become America. Two weeks later I traveled from Mississippi to Alabama to join John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and about 25,000 fellow citizens to march the 54 miles from Selma to the steps of the
state’s capitol in Montgomery, safer thanks to Federal District Court Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr.’s order that we had a right to peaceful protest and with National Guard protection. And we were buoyed by President Johnson’s March 15th address calling on Congress to pass what became the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In that speech—“The American Promise”—President Johnson said: “This was the first nation in the history of the world to be founded with a purpose. The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: ‘All men are created equal’—‘government by consent of the governed’—‘give me liberty
or give me death’. . . Those words are a promise to every citizen that he shall share in the dignity of man . . . To apply any other test— to deny a man his hopes because of his color or race, his religion or the place of his birth—is not only to do injustice, it is to deny America and to dishonor the dead who gave their lives for American freedom.” President Johnson also said: “Should we defeat every enemy, should we double our wealth and conquer the stars, and still be unequal to this issue, then we will have failed as a people and as a nation.” As Dr. King spoke to us at the end of the exhilarating Selma to Montgomery March, he too reminded us that we weren’t done: “Let us therefore continue our triumphant march to the realization of the American dream. Let us march on segregated housing until every ghetto or social and economic depression dissolves, and Negroes and whites live side by side in decent, safe, and sanitary housing. Let us march on segregated schools until every vestige of segregated and inferior education becomes a thing of the past . . . Let us march on poverty until no American parent has to skip a meal so that their children may eat . . . Let us march on ballot boxes until we send to our city councils, state legislatures, and the United States Congress men who will not fear to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.”

SENIOR Victims targeted by their faith routinely bilked by unregulated ‘health care sharing ministries’ By Audrey Dutton BOISE, ID (AP)—Susan Calvin was healthy. Her family was, too. But their health insurance premiums and deductibles were climbing. When she started shopping for an insurance plan for 2017 and lamented the cost, Calvin says, her insurance broker suggested trying another option.
W
HAT she didn't fully realize at the time was that she wasn't buying health insurance. She was signing up for a health care sharing ministry, the Idaho Statesman reported. A few years after dropping her health insurance and joining a sharing ministry, she warns, “My biggest thing with this is be very, very careful and cautious.” Health care sharing ministries are basically faith-based clubs whose dues are pooled and distributed to help members pay their medical bills. The ministries require members to adhere to certain faith-based principles—no illicit drugs, heavy drinking or extramarital sex, for example—and to follow certain rules laid out in their contracts. The ministries gained popularity under the Affordable Care Act. The law's tax penalty for going uninsured rolled out in 2014, and it did not apply to people who joined health care sharing ministries. That exemption—and the rising costs of not only having health insurance but using it, too—made the ministries popular with people like Calvin, who don't have coverage through their jobs and don't qualify for incomebased subsidies to buy their own insurance. The number of Idahoans in health care sharing ministries has grown significantly in recent years, according to Idaho Department of
Insurance Director Dean Cameron. The department asked eight of the largest ministries to divulge how many Idahoans they cover. There were 15,874 Idahoans in those eight ministries in 2017. There were 24,282 in 2018. Cameron doesn't yet have the numbers for 2019, but he thinks it could be 35,000 or more “I would not be surprised if it was that high,” he said. That's about one-third the number of Idahoans who bought health insurance plans through the state exchange that year. “From a philosophical standpoint, I have absolutely no objection to religious institutions assisting individuals with their health care needs, whether they're assisting them with paying their claims or assisting them with paying their premiums,” Cameron said. What does give him “heartburn,” he said, are complaints from people like Calvin, whose claims weren't covered as they would have been by health insurance—and who were left with five- or six-figure medical bills. He says Idahoans need to take a “buyer beware” approach and understand the limits of their coverage in a health sharing ministry. CLAIMS DENIED BY HEALTH CARE SHARING MINISTRY Susan Calvin, of Boise, looked over her contract when she joined Texas-based Altrua HealthShare, but
she doesn't remember noticing some of the fine print about what it would and wouldn't cover. What she does remember noticing was the member dues—less than half of what she'd been paying for health insurance, she said, with a “reasonable” deductible. She signed up. That was December 2016. But in 2017, she got sick. Very sick. She went to the emergency room with what she thought was a sinus infection. She contacted Altrua the week after her ER visit, she said. She learned her first lesson: the ministry wouldn't pay, because she didn't submit the claim fast enough, she said. (Altrua documents from that year said members with ER visits must contact Altrua within 96 hours of discharge.) The illness didn't go away. As the months went on, her symptoms worsened. Her tongue went numb. Her foot went numb. Calvin's doctor suggested surgery. The procedure was expected to cost $17,000—and Altrua told her it wouldn't cover the bill, she said. Faced with the massive expense, she almost backed out, but her husband insisted. So in December 2017, a year after joining the health sharing ministry, she had sinus surgery. The surgeon discovered the cause of Calvin's problems wasn't a sinus infection, or a deviated septum, or anything else they'd speculated it could be. It was
an extremely rare vascular condition that can be fatal without treatment. “Essentially, my septum had disintegrated,” she said. The surgeon told Calvin she “either was a heavy drug user, which I am not, or I had Wegener's disease, where my white blood cells were attacking my body,” she said. Wegener's disease, also known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis, is a condition that affects blood vessels and tissue in certain parts of the body, including the sinuses. “It cut off all the blood circulation (in my sinus area) and it was getting into my lungs, and that's where it's fatal,” Calvin said. “If I had waited two or three months, I would have died.” She ended the year with $40,000 of medical bills, she said. Getting the condition under control would require infusion treatments. Drugs that cost $300,000 a year. Hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in medical costs, she estimates. Calvin dropped Altrua and signed up for a plan through Idaho-based Mountain Health CO-OP, which sells Affordable Care Act-compliant health insurance plans on Idaho's exchange. The Affordable Care Act requires insurance plans sold on exchanges to cover preexisting conditions, and prohibits them from charging people more based on past health problems, so Calvin's lack of insurance the prior year had
no effect on her coverage. Health sharing ministries have no such requirements. “I'll be forever indebted to them,” Calvin said of Mountain Health COOP. Her monthly premium doubled to about $1,200 a month, she said. “But considering how much the treatments were, I didn't blink an eye. ... I would have been bankrupt if I'd stayed with the other company.” Calls and emails by the Statesman to Altrua were not returned. The company's website provides Altrua's membership guidelines that, for 2017, said cases of sinusitis were not covered. That's consistent with what Calvin says Altrua told her. She says she tried to appeal but the company didn't respond. “I turned in all my medical bills (to Altrua), I showed them it wasn't a sinus infection that caused it, it was Wegener's” but Altrua declined payment, she said. “So I sent all my (stuff) to the legal department, nothing.” Altrua's website includes a set of questions and answers that make it clear it is not health insurance. “No, we are NOT an insurance company nor is the membership offered through an insurance company, and our organization is not subject to the regulatory requirements or consumer protections of any state insurance code,” it says. The Idaho Supreme Court in a 2013 opinion found that it wasn't correct to say Altrua was offering health insurance. The Idaho Department of Insurance had alleged the ministry was operating as an insurer. One Supreme Court justice called the case “a prime example of an administrative agency exceeding its statutory powers in an attempt to protect citizens from themselves.” Another justice said Altrua had “designed its program to look like insurance and act like insurance but to exclude it from being insurance by virtue of its numerous disclaimers.”

Do you know the thing that bothers me about this? It takes her over a year to find the vehicle she wants to buy, but it only took her five months to find the person she wanted to marry. I think that is rather strange, but I'm not going to delve into that in any degree. Could it be that I'm much better than a vehicle? I think I'll just leave it there. I made a mistake once by going with her to a dealer to look at a vehicle. I was amazed to discover, well not too amazed, but she knew more about the vehicle on the lot than the salesman did. After about 20 minutes of her describing all of the good and the bad of the vehicle, the salesman just looked at me and shook his head. No words were needed at that time. Then for her to find a vehicle that satisfied her inquiries was quite the thing in and of itself. When she found this particular vehicle, she was truly ecstatic. I really cannot blame her. After a year of searching, searching, and finding one and then discovering it was not what you wanted has to be a tiring experience; all the vehicles she rejected throughout the past year. But the story is not over when she finds the vehicle she wants. It's really just beginning. The next step, of course,
is to go to the salesman and bargain for a good price. I do not think the salesmen know what they are up against when my wife comes in wanting to buy a certain vehicle. At first, they smile, imagining they have made an easy sale. Boy, are they in for a big surprise. It almost takes her longer to negotiate a price than it does for her to find a vehicle. First, there has to be a trade-in price for her current vehicle. Trust me when I say, she knows just what it’s worth and will not take a dime less. The salesman, on the other hand, thinks he can use her trade-in as a bargaining chip. Is he going to be surprised! After the trade-in is settled comes the price for the new vehicle. According to her research, my wife knows exactly how much that vehicle is worth. I would not be surprised that she knows more about it than the salesman. At this point, I would not want to be that salesman. Under no circumstances, I could ever think of, is he going to win. The only thing he will win is selling that vehicle. The next step is for her to drive the vehicle around to make sure everything is working. Nobody can do this better than she can. If up to me, if the engine starts, I am satisfied. If I can drive around
the block, I am ecstatic. Not so with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. After her intense inspection and trial run, she will know everything about that vehicle. My job, although not as important as hers, is to sign all the paperwork, including the bank loan. For the past week, I heard what a great deal she got and
how wonderful this new van is. And, she should know because she did all of the work. I am certainly not complaining, because, with her expertise in this area, I do not have to try to find a van for her. As she was exploiting all the merits of this new van, I just smiled because she was happy. You know the saying about a happy wife.
As she was going on about her van, I could not help but think of what Solomon said. “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:10-12). I may not be as wise as
Solomon, but like him, I made the find of a lifetime. Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, 1471 Pine Road, Ocala, FL 34472. He lives with his wife in Silver Springs Shores. and they launched this program 13 years ago," she said. "They introduced it to us in Philadelphia, and they asked all the clubs to go back to their communities and put on an event." At the first event, she was a committee of one, and she had it at the Oxnard Transportation Center with about 20 people. "Every year, it has grown, and now we have five clubs from Ventura County, including Oxnard, Ventura, Filmore, Camarillo, and the Conejos," she said. "We all collaborate and work on this together. You can do better things with a bigger team." This is their third year at the
Museum of Ventura County. "We've moved around, but I think this is our final home now," she said. "It's a central gathering place, and everyone knows the museum." The Soroptimists focuses on improving the lives of women and girls through programs that lead to economic and educational empowerment. "We award scholarships to women who are going back to the workforce, and they have to go back to school and get additional training or college education so that they can apply for scholarships," she said. The group invests in girls through the "Dream Program,"
so women can get a scholarship to go to school and be a nurse, teacher, or doctor. "Hopefully, we can help make their dream come true," she said. "We work with atrisk youth, and we have a "Dream it, Be it," program for girls in high school ages 1417. It's going on its third year, and it's going on in four high schools. We'll have about 80 schoolgirls there." Survivor Heather Gonzalez and her entire family are victims of crime and are now survivors of sexual assault, and it included her daughter, Jillian. "She's here to say that it happened to her, and she's talking about it," Heather

said. "She speaks on behalf of other kids who survived sexual assault. We are with the voices of Ventura County, with the Family Justice Center. We talk about what's important for survivors to get when they need services through the victims advocate office through the Family Justice Center.” Jillian got to be a part of what the Family Justice Center should look like, Heather said, and the sky is Jillian's sky. "When we were going through the crime, all the different things that we needed as a family took a lot of time away from the family," Heather said. "We had the resources and time to go to counseling and all the different things that we needed to do for each member of the family that was a victim of the crime. What the Family Justice Center did was all the services you need together in the county and recognized that we needed to stop revictimizing victims and allow them to come to one place to get all the services they need." When Jillian walked into the New Family Justice Center, the ceiling was two different drop ceilings. "Jillian said to Senior Deputy District Attorney Mike Jump that you should make that ceiling a sky," Heather said. "When I (Jillian) first went to Safe Harbor to talk to different people, I didn't want to look at anybody in the eye. For people to come in, look up, and not have to look at somebody would make her feel more comfortable." Jillian talked about the Voices of Ventura County, which gave her a voice, and it made her feel like she was not alone. "You have people there that will help you through it," she said. "That's something that I needed, and I got from some people. At the Family Justice Center, you get it all." Jillian advises people who are survivors of sexual assault to come forward.
"If you come forward, there is a person that doesn't have to," she said. "It shows that you are not alone, and you can prevent it from happening again." Heather added the perpetrator of the crime had done it for years, and nobody talked about it and swept it under the rug. "We came forward and talked about it, so it doesn't happen again from this particular offender," she said. "Our journey started with if we could change one family's life by her telling Jillian's story, that's what we are going to do." Erika Barus ran the Forever Found Booth at the event, and she said it's a Christianbased foundation that delivers children from sex and labor slavery in India, Thailand, Ethiopia, and Ventura County. "Part of what Forever Found does is give you literature about what you can do to help and see what is going on," she said. "That way, you can notice things that aren't correct. Forever Found has a huge online presence, and they can tell you a whole bunch." Barus said if you see a child at school covered in bruises, you need to be aware. "If there are unexplained absences, or not as well dressed as they have been in the past, perhaps," she said. "It's not just one thing. It's knowing that if you put these things together; all of a sudden, they're dressing kind of sexy and have a lot of bruises on their legs, or maybe they're more withdrawn suddenly, that may be a sign that something's going on, and you may want to alert somebody in charge, like an authority figure" Donna Passero added they have a Forever Found home in California and India. "We not only rescue women who are sex trafficked, but we also rescue women who are labor trafficked,” she said. Forever Found works with
the authorities and also has a mentor program. "It's amazing," Barrus said. "It's a survivor mentor program, and there are trained people who go through a whole course to help these kids, like a Big Brother or Big Sister Program, so they can become reacclimated to what a normal childhood is." Supervisor John Zaragoza felt honored to present a resolution to the Soroptomist Club commemorating the Walk to STOP Human Trafficking and planned to walk, as well. "I've been working with Debbie (Gohlke) for 13 years since it started at the Oxnard Transportation Center," Zaragoza said. "The other day, we had a resolution presented to the Soroptomists, and it's great to see all the young ladies go out there and try to prevent human trafficking. There are also young men that get involved with that." Jan Reaver from the Soroptomist Group of Ventura supports the effort because human trafficking should not happen to any woman or man. "We have to make our feelings and beliefs known," she said. "Kids should watch out for any predator who tries to talk them into going along with them or something questionable. Unfortunately, kids are often taught to trust or bond adults." Gaea Verneris came with her three-year-old named Bayzil, and she been with the Soroptomists for approximately two years. "I own my own financial planning company called Legacy One Financial, and I sponsored the event," she said. "I am out here to support the Soroptomists and the STOP movement. When I had Bayzil, I started hanging around the Soroptomists, and this event spoke to me because of how I feel when I hear the speakers who have been impacted. That could be my little girl."
you want. "The public's not educated, and all they know is THC," Ericka said. "There are over 130 cannabinoids in that one plant that nobody cares about. Each one of those cannabinoids produces its own effect. The same thing with the terpenes that gives it the smell and the taste, like essential oil, will create its own effect, as well."
Ericka related one story about someone who couldn't sleep and want the highest THC he could get. "I got him the strongest thing; I got a couple of options for him, and then I asked him how many milligrams he takes," she said. "He had no idea. Then, I started digging deeper, to make sure. I wasn't going to give him the strongest thing, because he doesn't really need that, although he thinks he does. What I found out that he was taking half of a five-milligram gummy. That had been working for him, and he needed just a little bit more." Beth noted that many times a customer will come in and ask for a recommendation. "They really do respect their opinion," she said. "They trust us, and we feel proud of that. Ericka and Shawn do our hiring, and they've hired these amazing people. This is an amazing team. It's a family here." This story will continue on March 20.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2020
HEALTH Experts: Cruise ships no place for a coronavirus quarantine By Jay Reeves Cruise ships hit by coronavirus outbreaks have quickly found themselves with no ports for thousands of passengers as countries on four continents have quarantined vessels or kept them at sea for days.
By Yue Stella Yu
K
EEPING all of the passengers on board instead of letting them disembark on land is a strategy that can backfire, however, according to experts, because the ventilation systems and close quarters of cruise ships make them ideal places for illness to jump from one person to the next. “They're not designed as quarantine facilities, to put it mildly,” said Don Milton, an epidemiologist with the University of Maryland. A ship with about 3,500 people aboard was sailing in circles off the coast of California on Saturday after 19 crew members and two passengers tested positive for the new virus. Originally bound for San Francisco, the Grand Princess might be sent instead to a non-commercial port, officials said. While restaurants and other shipboard locations were closed, passengers were able to watch TV and use the internet, or if they were lucky enough to have one, go outside on their balcony overlooking the water. Passenger Karen Schwartz Dever said she and her husband were enjoying their balcony and keeping themselves busy with playing cards, while meals and water were being delivered by room service. But she worried about some of the other passengers. “I met someone who is in the middle of chemo for cancer,” she said. “There are people on oxygen.
There are also children on board. I can't imagine what it's like if they are in an inside cabin.” While President Donald Trump has said he doesn't want the Grand Princess to dock, he also said he would yield to the advice of health officials. Refusing to let the ship into port for an extended period could hasten the spread of the virus among the people on board, experts said. Milton, who studies the spread of virus particles in the air, said the recirculating air on a cruise ship's ventilation system, along with people living in close quarters and in communal settings, make the vessels vulnerable to the spread of infectious illnesses. “You're going to amplify the infection by keeping people on the boat,” he said. A Purdue University air quality expert said cruise ship air conditioning systems are not designed to filter out particles as small as the coronavirus, allowing the disease to rapidly circulate to other cabins. “The passengers should be
quarantined on shore if there is a suitable facility,” Qingyan Chen said in an email message. Grand Princess “should run 100% outdoor air in their air conditioning system and not use recirculated air.” Also in California on Saturday, a Carnival cruise ship returning from a weeklong trip to Mexico was held at the Port of Long Beach after a passenger was taken to a local hospital to be tested for coronavirus, said city spokeswoman Kate Kuykendall. She couldn't comment on the woman's condition, but said she was being tested out of an abundance of precaution. It wasn't clear how many passengers were on the ship. In Japan, leaders were criticized for confining more than 3,700 passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess for two weeks last month because of the virus. About 700 people were sickened on the ship and three died. Japanese health officials defended the quarantine as necessary and adequate. In Asia, the Malaysian port of Penang turned away the cruise ship
Costa Fortuna with 2,000 people aboard because there were 64 passengers from Italy, the center of Europe's epidemic. It was the second port after Phuket in Thailand to reject the ship, which is now headed to Singapore. In Egypt, a cruise ship on the Nile with more than 150 aboard was under quarantine after 12 people tested positive for the virus. And on the Mediterranean in Malta, which reported its first case of the virus, the MSC Opera agreed not to enter port even though there were no infections confirmed on board. Art Reingold, head of the epidemiology and biostatistics division at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, said the burden is on authorities to coordinate the feeding and care of so many people without spreading the infection further. “It's obviously going to be a real challenge,” he said. “I don't have any doubt that crew members interact with passengers, so it seems quite plausible there could be additional transmissions.”
Behind the scenes, scientists prep for COVID-19 vaccine test By Lauran Neergaard WASHINGTON (AP)—A team of scientists jostled for a view of the lab dish, staring impatiently for the first clue that an experimental vaccine against the new coronavirus just might work. After weeks of round-the-clock research at the National Institutes of Health, it was time for a key test. If the vaccine revs up the immune system, the samples in that dish— blood drawn from immunized mice—would change color. Minutes ticked by, and finally they started glowing blue. “Especially at moments like this, everyone crowds around,” said Kizzmekia Corbett, an NIH research fellow leading the vaccine development. When her team sent word of the positive results, “it was absolutely amazing.” Dozens of research groups around the world are racing to create a vaccine as COVID-19 cases continue to grow. Importantly, they're pursuing different types of vaccines—shots developed from new technologies that not only are faster to make than traditional inoculations but might prove more potent. Some researchers even aim for temporary vaccines, such as shots that might guard people's health a month or two at a time while longer-lasting protection is developed. “Until we test them in humans we have absolutely no idea what the immune response will be,”

everybody's frustration and maybe even confusion,” said Kate Broderick, Inovio's research and development chief. “You can do everything as fast as possible, but you can't circumvent some of these vital processes.”
cautioned vaccine expert Dr. Judith O'Donnell, infectious disease chief at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. “Having a lot of different vaccines— with a lot of different theories behind the science of generating immunity— all on a parallel track really ultimately gives us the best chance of getting something successful.” First-step testing in small numbers of young, healthy volunteers is set to start soon. There's no chance participants could get infected from the shots, because they don't contain the virus itself. The goal is purely to check that the vaccines show no worrisome side effects, setting the stage for larger tests of whether they protect. First in line is the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. It is preparing to test 45 volunteers with different doses of shots co-developed
by NIH and Moderna Inc. Next, Inovio Pharmaceuticals aims to begin safety tests of its vaccine candidate next month in a few dozen volunteers at the University of Pennsylvania and a testing center in Kansas City, Missouri, followed by a similar study in China and South Korea. Even if initial safety tests go well, “you're talking about a year to a year and a half ” before any vaccine could be ready for widespread use, stressed Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. That still would be a recordsetting pace. But manufacturers know the wait—required because it takes additional studies of thousands of people to tell if a vaccine truly protects and does no harm—is hard for a frightened public. “I can really genuinely understand
BEHIND-THE-SCENES IN NIH'S LAB The new coronavirus is studded with a protein aptly named “spike” that lets the virus burrow into human cells. Block that protein, and people won't get infected. That makes “spike” the target of most vaccine research. Not so long ago, scientists would have had to grow the virus itself to create a vaccine. The NIH is using a new method that skips that step. Researchers instead copy the section of the virus' genetic code that contains the instructions for cells to create the spike protein, and let the body become a mini-factory. Inject a vaccine containing that code, called messenger RNA or mRNA, and people's cells produce some harmless spike protein. Their immune system spots the foreign protein and makes antibodies to attack it. The body would then be primed to react quickly if the real virus ever comes along. Corbett's team had a head start. Because they'd spent years trying to develop a vaccine against MERS, a cousin of the new virus, they knew how to make spike proteins stable enough for immunization, and sent that key ingredient to Moderna to brew up doses.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP)— Lap after lap, Mary Anna Nelson kept on going. Walking turned into jogging. Her eyes were fixed on the path ahead so that she would not trip and fall. No one could overtake her—that, she made sure of. On a sunny morning, a competitive Nelson managed to finish first place during an exercise at the Frank P. Phillips YMCA Adaptive Fitness program in Columbus, leaving most of her elderly peers behind by a large margin. Morning exercises like that have always been part of Nelson's daily routine—perhaps more so after she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2018, a long-term nervous system disorder that affects body movements and progresses overtime. The disease, though uncurable and irreversible, can be controlled through medications. Symptoms started to show in July that year while she was driving. “I put my hands on the steering wheel and saw a slight little tremor in that finger,” Nelson said. “And I thought, 'Something's wrong.”' Nelson would soon be proven right. Parkinson's, which her oldest brother and her father's identical twin brother both had, has now found her. She could feel the disease progress, as she noted in a journal she kept to document her symptoms and improvements. In January 2019, she wrote, “I noticed trouble swallowing. Choke easily. Can trip easily.” Her voice also grew soft, she said. In a daily schedule she jotted down in the journal, she noted how she would wake up with a dry mouth from sleeping with her mouth open. She tried keeping a mask on to keep it closed, she wrote, but “it gets so hot.” Nelson had never understood why her oldest brother, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's, would naturally fall asleep on the couch. But now, she said, it all makes sense. “I would get so aggravated (when he fell asleep),” she said. “When I got Parkinson's, if I sit on the couch, and get still and warm, I fall asleep just exactly like he did.” To fight back against the disease, Nelson decided to make it her “job” to get better. She started taking longer walks, ranging from seven to 12 miles a day with different walking partners. At the beginning of last year, Nelson joined the YMCA, where she took different classes and made friends with conditions just like hers. Her coach, Salem Gibson, showed her “no mercy” during the hour-long workout sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, she said. As she lamented about her ruthless coach, Nelson took a swing at the heavy bag in front of her, during a boxing session for people with Parkinson's. Then another. Although she was not on beat with the gym music, Nelson kept her pace and posture steady. The point of the exercise, Gibson said, was to help build her balance and keep her focused.

ENTERTAINMENT Business as usual at North American box office amid virus By Lindsey Bahr
Weinstein sentenced to 23 years for sexual assaults NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 23 years in prison, pleading for mercy as his accusers said his punishment in the landmark #MeToo rape case was long overdue. After two of his accusers confronted him again in a Manhattan court, the 67-year-old former Hollywood mogul broke his courtroom silence to say he felt “remorse for this situation.” But he also argued that men are being accused of “things that none of us understood.” “Thousands of men are losing due process. I’m worried about this country,” he said in a calm but creaking voice. “I’m totally confused. I think men are confused about these issues.” Weinstein, who has been accused of violating scores of women, was convicted last month of raping a once-aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on former TV and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006. He faced a maximum of 29 years in prison. The conviction at the landmark #MeToo trial was the first criminal fallout from a raft of allegations that the Oscar-winning movie producer used his clout to lure women, sexually assault or harass them and then silence them. “Although this is a first conviction, this is not a first offense,” Judge James Burke said before revealing the prison sentence. Weinstein faced a maximum of 29 years. Both of the women Weinstein was convicted of assaulting spoke in court prior to his sentencing about the impact he had on their lives, and the empowerment they felt during the trial when they testified against him. “Rape is not just one moment of penetration. It is forever,” said the 2013 rape accuser, who recalled a moment during the trial when she left the witness stand in tears and then could be heard screaming from an adjacent room. “The day my screams were heard from the witness room was the day my voice came back to its full power,” she said. Asked later about her reaction after the sentence, she wiped her eyes, raised her arm and nodded her head. The Associated Press has a policy of not naming people who have been sexually assaulted without their consent. It is withholding the rape accuser’s name because it is not clear whether she wishes to be identified. “I believe that if Harvey Weinstein was not convicted by this jury, it would happen again and again and again,” Haleyi said as she broke down in tears, saying the 2006 attack scarred her deeply, made her rethink her career in the entertainment business and left her feeling paranoid and afraid of retaliation. Weinstein, who has maintained that any sexual activity was consensual, showed no visible reaction to the sentence. Beforehand, he gave a rambling speech that touched on his past charitable fund-raising, his filmmaking career and a pledge that his new “mission is to help people.” He said his “empathy has grown” since his downfall. He said he had thought he had good friendships with Haleyi and the rape accuser, who exchanged warm emails with him after the alleged attacks.
LOS ANGELES (AP)— North American audiences are not staying away from theaters amid virus concerns, according to the weekend's box office numbers. Disney and Pixar's “Onward” topped the charts as expected and the Ben Affleck basketball drama “The Way Back” also opened normally.
“
ONWARD” earned $40 million from 4,310 North American locations, according to studio estimates on Sunday. It's on the lower end of openings for the studio, more in line with “The Good Dinosaur's” launch in 2015. “Onward” is an original story about two teenage elf brothers voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland who get a chance to spend one last day with
their late father. “I think it's a solid start for an original animated film,” said Cathleen Taff, Disney's president of distribution. “We're especially excited about the fact that we've seen such good word of mouth.” The studio expects it to continue performing well with spring breaks starting for many students and families next week. Internationally, “Onward” picked up $28 million. Disney noted that outside of Asia-Pacific regions, coronavirus concerns have not made a material impact on earnings. The weekend overall is down some 50% from the same weekend last year, but that's only because that's when “Captain Marvel” opened to over $153 million, and not any indication of the market taking a hit, said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. The rest of the charts also looked normal, even with recent virus-related shake-ups in the
entertainment industry, including the cancellation of the South by Southwest festival and the decision to push back the release of the new James Bond film “No Time to Die” from April to November. Universal and Blumhouse's “The Invisible Man” dropped to second place in week two with $15.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $52.7 million. Worldwide, it's just shy of $100 million. In third place, Warner Bros.' “The Way Back” opened in line with projections with an estimated $8.5 million. The R-rated drama cost around $21 million to produce. Affleck's performance was well-received by critics, and the star has been unusually candid about his own real-life struggles with alcoholism in the press in the weeks leading up to release. “It's a very specific drama,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' president of domestic distribution. “Ben Affleck did a great job and
Virus Outbreak-Mideast-Comic Con
With hand sanitizer nearby, Dubai Comic Con laughs at virus DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)—As papiermache hand grenades and plastic assault rifles barely caught the attention of security guards, a health official in Dubai wordlessly watched over an infrared camera filming all who passed by—including a few scythe-wielding Grim Reapers. Welcome to Comic Con in the times of the new coronavirus. The Middle East Film & Comic Con began Thursday night in Dubai, a city of skyscrapers and nightclubs suddenly subdued by the outbreak of the new virus across the region. The wider United Arab Emirates has at least 28 confirmed cases of the virus, a small number compared to the 3,750 cases region wide, but the concern here is growing. Nationwide, schools and universities will be shut down for four weeks beginning Sunday. The few frequent fliers trickling out of Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel and the home of longhaul carrier Emirates, say it is emptier than they've ever seen it. Meanwhile, a host of big events including Dubai's annual boat show and art exhibition have been put on hold. But not Comic Con. As actor John Rhys-Davies—you know him as the Egyptian character Sallah from the “Indiana Jones” franchise— exhorted a crowd to become filmmakers themselves, the halls at the Dubai World Trade Center slowly filled. For the uninitiated, anyone can come to a Comic Con in your street clothes. But many choose to cosplay, or “costume play,” as a favorite character from a film, television show, video game or comic book.
An initial surprise came from an Emirati in the traditional kandora robes, ghuttra headscarf and lifelike mask of Nemesis from the “Resident Evil” video game series. He played a guitar for happy Instagramers. Hand sanitizer stations stood at the ready nearby. For the Nintendo-famed plumbers Mario and Luigi— rather 24-year-old Bibi Zumot of Jordan and 21-year-old Mohamed Rashed of Egypt— they acknowledged that the coronavirus did come up in their minds as they attended. And if it hadn't, “my mom, my friends' mom, everyone's mom” had reminded them beforehand, Rashed said. Luckily, the two plumbers wear large gloves. Rashed substituted in two sets of latex gloves, which he snapped to show journalists. “The gloves still work with the Luigi thing,” said Rashed, who went as a voodoo doll to his first Comic Con. Both Rashed and Zumot praised the organizers for having thermal scanners, hand sanitizer and medical staff on hand for the event. However, Zumot offered a bit more of a fatalistic view. “If corona gets me, it's going to get me!” he bellowed in his red overalls.
Others took a bit more of a cautious view, wearing offcharacter surgical masks or incharacter protection like bandit masks covering the lower half of their faces. Most seemed unconcerned by the Grim Reapers moving through the crowd to the beat of pop music. One cosplayer, who only gestured to a journalist when questioned, wore the long-nose black beak of a plague doctor. It didn't stop a woman in a mask from taking a selfie with him. Stands sold pop-culture paintings infused with an Emirati vibe. A Batman next to a Dubai police officer getting out of a sports car. The DeLorean from “Back to the Future” in front of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, with the caption “Back to Dubai.” Other stands tested the germaphobe. A giant mockup of Thor's hammer, supposedly unliftable except for the worthy, found itself lifted and touched all over by every person wanting a photograph. Deeper inside, those costumed took part in sessions of a dance contest to win prizes. They watched monitors for the moves, egged on by a master of ceremonies who may have exaggerated his qualifications. “There's no corona anywhere in this building! I checked!” he shouted.
the reviews back that up.” Audiences, who skewed older (64% were over the age of 35), gave the film a B+ CinemaScore. Goldstein noted that the audience age broadened over the weekend. He also hasn't seen any significant impact of the virus on the North American box office yet. “When you look at the box office this weekend with ‘Onward' and ‘The Way Back,' these are solid numbers when we're all concerned ‘Will people hole up inside?'“ Goldstein said. We're not seeing evidence of that, but anything can happen.” Industry analysts are keeping an eye on the numbers as the news continues to develop around the outbreak. “Thus far, I'm not seeing any impact,” Dergarabedian said. “This weekend played out exactly as expected. You have families and children going to theaters to the tune of $40 million. People remain in the habit of going to the movies.”
