By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com OXNARD—The curtain came up at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Aug. 16, as the Sight + Sound Film Festival came to life with a preview party and information about the festival scheduled for 2019. The event was a celebration of its collaborators, organizers and artists alike. Filmmakers, with their cheering sections, came to support the people who have the dream of reaching for a camera and creating an event that moves and inspires. Driving force Luis Guereca, creator of the Oxnard Independent Film Festival, said it’s a film festival with a little different feel. “We’re not only going to show films,

but we are going to create an experience in cinema; whether it’s through music or a whole bunch of other things we are still working on,” he said. As a film festival he said it will have features, but will also have cinematic experiences that people will enjoy. “Whether it’s music, the sights, or the sounds, we’re going to experiment a lot with that,” he said. Annan's Legacy of Fighting for Equality and Rights Lives On By Edith M. Lederer UNITED NATIONS (AP)—Kofi Annan left the United Nations far more committed than it had been to combating poverty, promoting equality and fighting for human rights—and until his death Saturday he was speaking out strongly for nations working together to solve problems and worried about the rise of nationalism. As secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, Annan saw as his greatest achievements the programs and policies he put in place to reduce inequality within and between countries, to combat infectious diseases and to promote human rights and protect civilians from war crimes including genocide. He launched the U.N. Millennium Development Goals at a summit of world leaders in 2000 to cut extreme poverty by half, promote equality for women, ensure every child has a primary school education, reduce maternal and child mortality, and halt the spread of AIDS—all by 2015. Those goals—only a few of which were fully achieved—were succeeded by an expanded list of U.N. Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 that adds issues such as climate action, affordable and clean energy, and promoting peace and justice. The updated list is a major focus of the U.N.'s current agenda. As U.N. peacekeeping chief just before becoming secretary-general, Annan shared blame for the failure of U.N. troops he deployed to prevent the genocides in Rwanda in 1994 and in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995. When he became U.N. chief, Annan launched a doctrine of “humanitarian intervention” to prevent governments and leaders from massacring their own people. SACRAMENTO (AP)—A report on a deadly 2017 deputyinvolved shooting says Sacramento County sheriff 's deputies fired an excessive and unnecessary number of rounds. Three deputies fired 28 bullets, hitting 32-year-old Mikel McIntyre seven times. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The number of shots was “excessive, unnecessary, and put the community at risk,” says the report released this week by Sacramento County Inspector General Rick Braziel, a former Sacramento police chief. He recommended that deputies receive more training on when to turn to less deadly options against suspects like McIntyre, who was running away from officers when he was killed. He was shot after he initially struck two deputies and a police dog with rocks following erratic confrontations with his mother and other family members, authorities said. While at times McIntyre was “an imminent threat to deputies,”

WA S H I N G T O N — S o m e school systems around the U.S. have been reaching out to assist with the education of immigrant children at nearby shelters. The federal government and its housing contractors bear responsibility for instruction but some districts say they have felt compelled to intervene amid the outcry over separation of children from their parents at the U.S.Mexico border. The centers house thousands of immigrant youths, including mostly unaccompanied minors who arrived in the country without their families. The superintendent of schools in San Benito, Texas, reached out to the local Southwest Key shelter and agreed to send bilingual teachers, mobile classrooms and computers. But most of the 61 school systems with shelters in their district boundaries that were contacted by The Associated Press said they have not had contact with the shelters.

Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert's office also has yet to decide whether to bring charges against two Sacramento city police officers who killed Stephon Clark, an unarmed Black man, in March.

The submission process will be open after tonight, and they’ll have about a year to put something together.” Event Coordinator Carolyn Mullin said she is new at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center and tasked with creating a 50th anniversary season, including everything on stage and ballrooms. “Even our parking lot,” she said. “I’m working on a car show for next month. One of the things I knew I wanted to do was a film festival, but I have no expertise on this at all.” When she heard about Guereca, Mullin brought the idea to him. “It’s just brainstorming and where we can take this,” she said. “I don’t like to do anything average; I make it big or go home.” She loves the fun associated with Sight + Sound. “I love having fun at my job because it’s not a job,” she said. “I think the other cool thing is providing opportunities to people in our community to exhibit their work and challenge them to get out of their comfort zone and see where they can go creatively.” Mullin also wants people to connect with each other. “Let’s see what we can do together,” she said. “Together we’re stronger and better. That’s my motto for this event.” She said Lanitra Lawson, Chairwoman of the Oxnard Film Department, and Crystal Lopez, a recent Oxnard College graduate, are among the people on the committee. “It’s good,” she said. “We have a good perspective on this committee.” Guereca said the committee put together a “sizzle reel” featuring all the local talent to wet everyone’s taste buds for the preview party. “It’s a short film, but it was well put together by Crystal Lopez,” he said. “She’s moving on to bigger and better things, and we are excited to have her on the team.” He said creativity is the goal over the next year. “You have filmmakers who are picking up a camera and experimenting, but you also have filmmakers who are taking this seriously,” he said. “They want to do this as a career. They studied it and are doing some amazing work that is very moving.” Lawson said she’s excited to be part of the powerhouse team, led by Mullin and Guereca. “We bring a college and education to this film festival,” she said. “We’re not just making films and entertaining, but we’re also educating about the content method and the message behind it. It’s not preachy, but we're making sure that we’re teaching filmmakers how to make films and the content we’re putting out.” She likes all the collaboration involved with the film festival. “It’s the college, the city, the local artists and they’re all from different walks of life. They are coming together to make something,” she said. Sight + Sound team member Arcelia Martinez got the crowd fired up and told them that she is a fellow filmmaker and festival organizers. “I hope you can see in your mind’s eye, everything we have in store for you during the 2019 Sight + Sound Film Festival, but first let’s roll up your sleeves and make these films happen.” She shared networking and funding opportunities. Estrella Reyes came to see a friend’s film. “I believe his film will be on the big screen and I am excited for him,” she said. “I can’t wait to see the different things they have to offer, and I am happy and excited tonight.” Marky Gutierrez made a shortthemed horror film. “I have been into horror films since I was a child,” he said. “I like creating short films and movies in general. Ever since I was little, I’ve liked watching scary movies.” His production is entitled “Hide and Seek.” “I’m hoping people like it because the people are not actors,” he said. “I am working with what I have, and I am excited.” Reyes said she’s going to offer constructive criticism. “We’re going to cheer him on,” she exclaimed.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Even the oceans are breaking temperature records in this summer of heat waves. Off the San Diego coast, scientists earlier this month recorded all-time high seawater temperatures since daily measurements began in 1916. “Just like we have heat waves on land, we also have heat waves in the ocean,” said Art Miller of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Between 1982 and 2016, the number of “marine heat waves” roughly doubled, and likely will become more common and intense as the planet warms, a study released Wednesday found. Prolonged periods of extreme heat in the oceans can damage kelp forests and coral reefs, and harm fish and other marine life. “This trend will only further accelerate with global warming,” said Thomas Frolicher, a climate scientist at the University of Bern in Switzerland, who led the research. His team defined marine heat waves as extreme events in which sea-surface temperatures exceeded the 99th percentile of measurements for a given location. Marine biologists nicknamed a patch of persistent high temperatures in the Pacific Ocean between 2013 and 2016 “the Blob.” During that period, decreased phytoplankton production led to a cascading lack of food for many species, causing thousands of California sea lion pups to starve, said Miller, who had no role in the Nature study. “We've repeatedly set new heat records. It's not surprising, but it is shocking,” he said.

Black America and all people of goodwill throughout the world will miss her, but her legacy will never be forgotten.” Dr. Chavis continued: “Long live the spirit and legacy of Queen Aretha Franklin.” Dorothy Leavell, the chairman of the NNPA and publisher of the Crusader newspapers in Chicago and Gary, Ind., said that she was saddened by the loss of the music icon. “I send a message of sadness and respect for our beloved Queen whose musical genius [shined brightly] and resounded around the world,” Leavell said. The fourth of five children, Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Baptist preacher Reverend Clarence La Vaughan "C.L." Franklin and Barbara Siggers Franklin, a gospel singer, according to her biography. Franklin's musical gifts became apparent at an early age. Largely self-taught, she was regarded as a child prodigy. A gifted pianist with a powerful voice, Franklin got her

By the age of 14, she had recorded some of her earliest tracks at his church, which were released by a small label as the album “Songs of Faith” in 1956. She also performed with C.L.'s traveling revival show and, while on tour, befriended gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and Clara Ward. Hitting her stride in 1967 and 1968, Franklin churned out a string of hit singles that would become enduring classics, showcasing Franklin's powerful voice and gospel roots in a pop framework. In 1967, the album “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” was released, and the first song on the album, “Respect”—an empowered cover of an Otis Redding track— reached No. 1 on both the R&B and pop charts and won Aretha her first two Grammy Awards. She also had Top 10 hits with “Baby I Love You,” “Think,” “Chain of Fools,'” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Franklin's chart dominance soon earned her the title Queen of Soul, while at the same time she also became a symbol of Black empowerment during the Civil Rights Movement of the time. In 1968, Franklin was enlisted to perform at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during which she paid tribute to her father's fallen friend with a heartfelt rendition of “Precious Lord.” Later that year, she was also selected to sing the national anthem to begin

In 1987, Franklin became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Detroit. Prior to her passing this week, Stevie Wonder and the Rev. Jesse Jackson were among those who paid a visit to her at her home in Detroit. “I prayed with her,” Jackson said. In a statement, former President Barack Obama lauded Franklin as “The Queen.” “America has no royalty but we do have a chance to earn something more enduring,” Obama said. “For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience.” Obama's statement continued: “In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human.” And, Obama added, sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance. “Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all,” Obama said. “May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.”

The nonprofit builds schools in Liberia, a West African country that lacks a formal educational system. Norman is completing his second school in Meh Meh Town, a rural village near Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, in an area that was severely affected by a civil war, and in the more immediate past, devastated by Ebola. “I grew up in West Africa, and I’m about service and giving back to humanity,” Norman said recently. “I have to build schools for children who won’t otherwise receive an education. We’re all here for a purpose. I want to be part of the movement to change the fate of Africa.” “Tonight’s LOOP award winner knows a lot about overcoming obstacles,” said Angelini. “Her accolades and accomplishments in ending the Liberian civil war are well known to everyone in this room. But what you may not know is her overwhelming and unwavering support for our little organization. When I first met Leymah, Norman and I were in Liberia trying to finish the last touches on the first school, and we went to her office to invite her to the ribbon cutting. She sat at her desk hand making care packages for children in her organization and accepted our invitation with open arms. We are celebrating tonight because there will always be obstacles to peace, but there will not always be leaders to overcome them.” This was in 2015 when Angelini traveled to Liberia, West Africa. He placed the first book, "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" on the shelf in the school’s library and gave the dedication speech. Locally, Angelini also serves on the board of directors for the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley as Director of Hospitality, on the Gold Coast Performing Arts Association Board as Treasurer, and on the Thousand Oaks Cultural Affairs Commission ad-hoc committee for the 2018 Excellence in the Arts Awards. Most recently, Angelini was honored as the Outstanding Youth Volunteer from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He is a resident of Newbury Park, and is a 23-year-old student at UCLA and has been a humanitarian and activist since the age of 6 when he donated his birthday presents to the victims of 9/11. Since then, he has been heavily involved in political activism and humanitarian work both in the Los Angeles area and abroad.

Lobbyist Claims California State Senator Threatened Her SACRAMENTO—State Sen. Joel Anderson is facing an investigation after a lobbyist said he threatened to hit her during a fundraiser at a Sacramento restaurant last week. California Nurses Association lobbyist Stephanie Roberson filed a complaint with the Senate Rules Committee, said Bonnie Castillo, executive director for the nurses' union. Castillo said the incident

I welcome the Rules Committee investigation to clear

up this misunderstanding,” he said Tuesday in a statement. Anderson is the latest California lawmaker to face accusations of inappropriate conduct or behavior. The state Legislature has been reexamining its harassment policies since last year, when nearly 150 women signed a letter detailing what it said was a pervasive culture of harassment by men at the Capitol. Three male lawmakers resigned

and at least one female lawmaker is the target of an investigation over groping allegations. Anderson, of Alpine, is prevented by term limits from seeking reelection. He's now running for a state tax board called the Board of Equalization. The California Nurses Association called on him to resign and end his campaign. Castillo said the union is reviewing legal action.

Children on the Front Lines By Marian Wright Edelman I can make a difference!” Every July thousands of students from Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® sites across the country participate in the CDF Freedom Schools National Day of Social Action. This year’s action focused on the need to vote for children and the fact that every vote matters. Though children and teenagers in Freedom Schools are too young to vote themselves, they held rallies and marches urging adults to get registered and vote for leaders this election cycle and in every election who will stand for children. Young people are refusing to sit on the sidelines as they see even children’s most basic needs under assault by many in the Administration and Congress. I am so proud of the Freedom Schools scholars who have learned they are following in the footsteps of children and youths who were the foot soldiers and infantry of the Civil Rights Movement. Some of their stories from the Movement are well known: six-year-old Ruby Bridges in New Orleans walked through White mobs to attend school – even praying for those jeering at her; the Little Rock Nine; the four little girls killed in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. Thousands of children were on the front lines of history. Whether sung or unsung heroes we owe all of them a debt of gratitude. On July 3rd, as one most recent example, the Department of Justice announced it was repealing 24 federal guidance documents that all sought to clarify basic federal civil rights protections for children, older youths and young adults and the Department of Education announced it would delay for two years a requirement that states identify and address racial disparities in special education, including disparities in the ways children of color are disciplined. What a mean unjust slap in the face of our most vulnerable children. We must continue to support and praise the action by today’s children and youths standing up against injustice, gun violence, child poverty, and unequal education and let them know we stand with them, are determined not to go backwards, and will step forward with them on the front lines seeking justice. Betsy DeVos’ $5 Billion Giveaway to For-Profit Colleges By Charlene Crowell Today’s increasingly competitive global economy requires and recruits those who are highly-skilled and knowledgeable. People understand and accept that higher education is a means to become employable, marketable, and competitive. It is equally true that the rising costs of higher education have now forced 44 million consumers to borrow $1.4 trillion in student loans to finance their educations. This debt was often viewed as more of an investment than a cost. That rational works so long as institutions deliver what was promised: a quality education. No loan was ever incurred as a lifetime commitment to debt that worsened with every passing year. Not only are consumers incurring serious debts, they are also defaulting in disturbing numbers. Student loan defaults plummet credit scores, lowering them by as much as 50-90 points, according to the Urban Institute, a DC-based research organization. As credit scores drop, the cost of any future credit goes up, making it even harder for affected consumers to manage their personal finances. While 250,000 federal direct student loan borrowers default every quarter, guess which consumers are most likely to default: people of

color, veterans, and other low-income consumers. In 2018, the people who a decade ago were targeted for unsustainable, high-cost mortgage loans are now being targeted by for-profit colleges for career training that fails to deliver the skills and incomes that enable to repay student loans. The Education Department’s Gainful Employment rule, which was finalized in 2014 and took effect in 2015, requires that career and technical training programs lead to income levels that enable their students to afford their student loan repayments. It also followed the failures of for-profit institutions like Corinthian Colleges, Everest and ITT Tech that left student borrowers without degrees, credits that could not be transferred and losses to taxpayers who fund federal financial aid. In recent days, however, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced plans to revoke this key rule and instead include additional data in the web-based resource called a College Scorecard that the Department claims is better than regulation. “Students deserve useful and relevant data when making important decisions about their education posthigh school,” said DeVos. “That’s why instead of targeting schools simply by their tax status, this administration is

Utah Firefighter Died After Plane Made Drop By Don Thompson and Lindsay Whitehurst SACRAMENTO—A firefighter from Utah was killed last week from falling tree debris after a modified airliner dropped thousands of gallons of flame-suppressing liquid on the area where he was helping battle California's largest-ever wildfire, according to a preliminary report from investigators obtained by The Associated Press.

Cliff Allen, president of the union representing California's wildland firefighters, said fire supervisors should have made sure firefighters were well clear of the drop zone or that their positions were clearly marked for the pilot of the modified airliner dropping the liquid—in this case, either a modified DC10 or a 747—and for the pilot of the planes that guide the huge aircraft. There could have been a radio miscommunication or the crew may not have heard or chose to ignore the radio warning, he said. Allen cautioned that it's not clear from the preliminary report whether the tree was weakened from the fire or from the drop or if the firefighters were hit by fire retardant slurry, which is a mixture of water, fertilizer and red dye. “Anytime you're working in trees, you have trees that are fire-weakened, then strong winds or water or retardant drops could potentially cause them to fall

and possibly injure folks,” Allen said. “It's often referred to as ‘widow makers.”' He and other state fire spokesmen did not disclose the type of aircraft was involved in Burchett's death. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection at times uses modified DC-10s that can drop 12,000 gallons of slurry, 12 times the amount carried by its standard smaller air tanker. It can lay a swath of fire retardant as wide as a football field for as long as a mile. Cal Fire says the modified 747 can drop 24,000 gallons, double that of the DC-10. It uses a system that can release the slurry under pressure or as gently as falling rain from an altitude as low as 400 feet. Firefighters who can't get out of the way are trained to lie face down toward the oncoming aircraft, helmet on, chinstrap secured, one hand holding the top of the helmet as it takes the brunt of the impact, Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said. The firefighter's legs should be spread to provide stability, because the force of the falling slurry and the air turbulence can otherwise lift a firefighter off the ground. “If you're in that particular area and you can't leave, you want to get to a safe position,” McLean said.

collecting much-needed blood donations. Donor Relations Specialist Robert Dennis from United Blood Service of Ventura County said his organization is proud to assist the Battle of the Badges. He said the organization also checked blood pressure of donors. “Since our phlebotomist checks blood pressure and hemoglobin, we thought it would be a local service we can provide,” he said. The battle was raging on, he said, with the Oxnard Police Department pulling ahead of the Oxnard Fire Department. “Overall, it’s great they’re getting together and working for the social good of our city,”

Paul Grayson was giving blood for the first time and admitted that he was a little afraid. “I was given an email,” he said. “I work for the City of Oxnard in the traffic engineering division.” Dennis added there had been some local disasters, and during the summer months the blood supply goes drastically low. “His donation goes twice as far in these summer months,” he said. “It’s important that we make sure we have enough blood in stock for the hospitals, especially for premature babies and mothers who are giving birth.” Grayson was eyeing the

snacks the organization provides after a donation. “I want the Chex mix,” he said. Oxnard resident Judy Lopez saw the mobile blood donation vehicle at McDonald's and the police station and took it as a sign to give blood. “I’m here to donate,” she said. “Like he (Dennis) said, everybody needs blood, and you never know. It’s useful for somebody else. Why not, share?” She wanted a bag of pretzels after her donation. “They look great,” she said. Phlebotomist Khris Hope was taking donations and said everyone was cooperative. “We have a lot of walkin donors and also our appointment donors coming in,” he said. “They are giving the gift of life.” He loves working in the healthcare industry. “Knowing the fact that everyone is coming out here to volunteer and helping out others in need,” he said. New Study Provides Critical Insights On Unique Health Needs of African Americans ORLANDO, Fla.—African Americans express more motivation to pursue a healthier lifestyle than non-African Americans, yet are less likely to describe themselves as being in good health, according to recent findings from the African American Health Engagement Study (AAHES), a collaboration of Pfizer, the National Medical Association (NMA) and the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). The AAHES study examines the health attitudes and behaviors of African Americans and reveals important health-related cultural differences compared to other non-African American respondent groups. Areas of focus in the study include spiritual health relative to other dimensions of health; awareness of and attitudes towards clinical trial participation; perception of state of health; and level of motivation to take action on health. The AAHES research, which commenced in 2017, is designed to garner insights that could inform meaningful and effective actions to increase health equity in African American communities. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control, African Americans face a greater risk of death at almost every stage of life compared with other American racial and ethnic groups, and African Americans overall have a life expectancy more than three years shorter than that of non-African Americans. “Our mission is to ensure access to the highest quality of healthcare for persons of color,” said Eric J. Williams, DNP, RN, CNE, FAAN, President, National Black Nurses Association. “Our participation in the study helps us better understand health attitudes and behaviors of African Americans. Key findings of the AAHES study include: • 84% of African American study participants described themselves as “highly motivated to improve overall health,” compared with 76% of nonAfrican American participants. Moreover, 75% of African American respondents claimed to be taking some action to stay healthy, compared to only 52% of nonAfrican American respondents. • 67% of African Americans surveyed agreed with the statement “I will do better on my health tomorrow,” compared with 53% of non-African Americans surveyed. • 36% of all African American study participants ranked their overall health (including physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual health) as “very good” or “excellent,” compared to 43% of study participants in other groups. • 79% of African American study participants viewed spiritual health as extremely or very important to overall health and wellness, compared to 59% of non-African American participants.45% of African Americans reported being satisfied with their body regardless of weight, compared to 36% of respondents in other groups. • 87% of African American participants believe African Americans are not well-represented in clinical trials, but only 33% of African American women and 41% of African American men stated that they are willing to enroll in a trial if it means changing or starting medication. ENTERTAINMENT Producer Who Worked with Ms. Franklin Recalls Great Performances By Nekesa Mumbi Moody NEW YORK (AP)—When Ken Ehrlich, the longtime producer of the Grammys and other awards shows, worked with the Obama administration on a concert honoring women at the White House, first lady Michelle Obama laid down one rule. “You aren't doing a tribute to women in my house without Aretha Franklin,” Ehrlich recalls Obama telling him. And so Franklin—a longtime friend of Ehrlich—was added to the 2014 “Women of Soul” bill, which included Patti LaBelle, Ariana Grande, Janelle Monae and Tessanne Chin. Despite those illustrious names and subsequent rousing performances, it was Franklin who of course stole the show. In her closing performance, Franklin performed “Amazing Grace”—while wearing a fur coat—and took the White House to church with a foot-stomping, handclapping rendition that continued even after show officially ended. “When she got going, and she was in the spirit, which she would get when she was singing gospel . you could start her, but stopping her was an entirely different story,” Ehrlich said by phone on Thursday, hours after learning of Franklin's death at the age of 76. That moment was

just one of the magical moments Ehrlich helped orchestrate with Franklin over the years. The most famous, certainly, was when Ehrlich was producing the Grammys in 1998 and Luciano Pavarotti was scheduled to sing “Nessun Dorma” during the broadcast—but then bowed out due to illness just as the show was about to air live. Ehrlich quickly started running through the many performers on hand who could fill the time— he first thought of asking Stevie Wonder to do something amazing, as Wonder is known to do. But then Ehrlich recalled Franklin had performed at a tribute concert to Pavarotti two nights earlier, and sung “Nessun Dorma.” She was already due to do a short performance of “Respect” for a “Blues Brothers” anniversary number—perhaps she would fill in for the famed opera tenor? So he went to Franklin's cramped dressing room—she had a small one because she was not the main performer—and interrupting

her fried chicken dinner to make his last-minute request. “I think I said, ‘How would you like to sing twice tonight?”' he recalled. “Then there was a silence, and she said, ‘OK, I'll do it.” Just before she went on stage, Ehrlich remembers her squeezing his hand and saying to him, “This is gonna be fun.” It was more than fun: It became one of her greatest performances, part of music history, and added to her already legendary status, with the Queen of Soul so deftly performing the famous aria. The next day, Ehrlich and Franklin spoke in an emotional phone call that had them both on the

verge of tears. “She said, ‘I knew this was going to be something different, but I didn't know it would be so great,”' Ehrlich remembers. Ehrlich produced other Grammy shows and events that featured Franklin performances. He praised her musicianship. A dazzling piano player in her own right, she only wanted the best performing with her, particularly on drums. “If you weren't with her timewise, she'd let you have it,” he recalled. One of his favorite performances was one he orchestrated with Elton John in 1993, where the two played on opposite pianos and performed John's “Border Song”—a mesmerizing duet. Ehrlich said years after that— including this year—when he and John spoke, one of them would always say, "Remember that night with Aretha?” Ehrlich said no matter what happens in music, Franklin will always be the model that singers and musicians would look to for excellence. “People are gonna be trying their hardest to both remember her and wanna do what she did” he said. “I've seen it all my life now. I saw it with Whitney, I see it with Beyonce . I see it with Carrie Underwood. I see it with every genre. I think both men and women, but women particularly, will be singing those songs.” He added: “Just the being that was Aretha Franklin will go on forever.”

Washburn Professor: Langston Hughes Was Year Older

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP)—A professor in Kansas says that poet Langston Hughes may have been born a year earlier that what's on record. Hughes is commonly thought to have been born in 1902, spending his childhood in Topeka and Lawrence, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. But Washburn University professor Eric McHenry said he unearthed evidence that Hughes was actually born a year earlier. He said a Black newspaper called The Plaindealer had an entry from 1901 that indicated “Little Langston Hughes” was under the weather but improving. The “ephemeral gossip” made a “vibrant historic record,” said McHenry, who teaches creative writing and poetry. McHenry said such a change can tell more about Hughes and the time he lived in, though its significance is an ongoing mystery. Hughes began school in 1908. One theory McHenry has is that Hughes' mother may have intentionally enrolled him a year later so that he was physically and developmentally ahead of his classmates at the white Topeka school he attended. The second theory is that Hughes reinvented himself as being a year younger when he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in high school. There is no evidence Hughes acknowledged the difference in his birth year.

MC Lyte also vividly remembered how the Bronx-born, hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five helped to shape her storytelling rap style. MC Lyte said that “The Message,” the Furious Five classic featuring Melly Mel, painted a picture of life in the Bronx that was very different from her life in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised. “The Message” influenced

MC Lyte to gravitate towards the storytelling aspect of hiphop. MC Lyte described “Lyte as a Rock,” her first album, as “a book of poems and short stories.” “It was easy to get into a [creative] space and just write,” MC Lyte said. “My mother made me write an essay for whatever I wanted to do.” MC Lyte said that young artists, who are pursuing careers in the entertainment business, should educate themselves about royalties, build a trustworthy team and seek legal advice when necessary. “Never sign anything without counsel and always sign your own checks,” MC Lyte advised. Reminiscing about her career in the music industry, if given the opportunity to change or do anything different, MC Lyte said that she would have said “yes” more often and been more open to trying new music genres and collaborating with unexpected artists.”
