ere it is – and we’re MORE than HALF way into 2017 and we are starting our 8th Year of Thunder Roads NorCal! Wow - time is flying by! We love it when we are on our bike at a stop light and get comments like “I LOVE your Magazine! I pick one up EVERY month!” It’s folks like you that ‘fuel our publishing tank’ Thank you! As usual, it has been a busy summer for us in NorCal and the good times just keep on rolling. Many of you will be making the annual pilgrimage to the motorcycling mecca – Sturgis, South Dakota! Ride safe and be sure, you get over to The Buffalo Chip for some of their great events that they have lined up, everything from world class concerts to motorcycle racing and a world record jump attempt by Doug Danger. The Chip is going to be ‘off the hook!’ this year for sure! Can’t make it? There is always plenty to do right here in NorCal. Looking for places to go? Go online to www.ThunderRoadsNorCal. com and look under our PAST ISSUE Issues index for a RIDE DESTINATION article from TRM contributors - Chuck and Cindy Loseth. Chuck and Cindy submit a monthly ride destination that will keep you fairly close to home, not to mention it could be your best local ride of the year - if you dare to take the adventure. If that is not in the cards, then look at our UPCOMING EVENT CALENDAR at the back of this issue - you will find a fundraising event that you can ‘pay it forward to a great cause’ and also enjoy some like-minded camaraderie while on a ride We attend a lot of events ALL OVER NORTHERN CALIFORIA and we love seeing local people at these events. But, we’d like to encourage you all to step out of your local riding comfort zone. How about attending a new event? How about going to an event that may take you an hour or so to ride to? We love rides in any direction that might take an hour or two – or MORE! On occasion, we’ll see a few more adventurous riders that will attend an event out of their normal area. From what we’ve experienced, most riders will not attend an event that is outside of their area code! We don’t get it - why is that? There is so much more to see and a lot of great people to meet out there when you venture out. One thing we do get…it can be a bit intimidating to roll into an event that no one recognizes you and you get looks of…’who are you?’ & ‘what are you doing here?’ We suggest that you ride in with an open-mind and a friendly spirit - you will be surprised! More importantly, you will get to experience some new ride routes that you otherwise would have never known about. On that note….if you happen to see an unfamiliar face at your local event – welcome them with a smile and be hospitable…HELLO…they are there supporting your event!! Be courteous and introduce a new face to your favorite local ride route! One of the most enjoyable things that we get to do (aside from meeting some of the best people) is riding to places we would otherwise never have experienced and it’s something that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Honestly, it is like taking a mini vacation to some faraway place (but you can do it in one day!) So our challenge to you during August and September, if you see TRM NorCal and you’re out of your local area code….let us know that you are there! We will put share your photo in the next issue with a caption of where you road in from! RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN Stan & Terri Hill Editors/Owners

MY TWO CENTS: I

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

t’s sweltering hot and we’ve seen 110 degrees or more way too often in the Valley and Foothills this past month. The inside of my shop is hot as hell and my water consumption is about a gallon and a half a day, but I think I’m sweating out more than that every day. I’ve been pretty busy lately so sitting in the air conditioned office isn’t gonna happen enough to relieve the relentless heat we’re getting. I rely heavily on lots of water and The Charlie Brechtel Band on B.I.C. internet radio to get me through the day. B.I.C. stands for Bikers Inner Circle, an internet radio station by Charlie Brechtel and its 100% biker radio, its music about American bikes and those who ride em. Unless you live in a cave or you’re one of those guys that thinks the internet was just a fad and you’re surprised to hear it’s still around then check em out and go to www. bicproductions.com and give em an ear. You won’t be disappointed. When it’s hot like it is now, hydration is so important to

prevent overheating and heat exhaustion or worse yet, heat stroke. The most important thing to remember is drink plenty of water or anything with electrolytes. I’m not claiming to be doctor or an expert on health but I do live and work where it gets freaken hot! Just keep an eye out for people around you and if you see someone with symptoms of heat exhaustion, which are general weakness, increased heavy sweating, a weak but faster heart rate, throwing up, fainting, or pale cold clammy skin, try to do something to help like cool them off, put them in the shade and give them water. Heat exhaustion is serious shit and if not treated properly it can lead to a heat stroke which is a medical emergency and should be treated at a hospital, so grab some water and drink up bitches! Sports drinks are good to drink because they replenish the electrolytes your body loses through sweating. What you do to cause you to sweat that bad is up to you, I don’t judge, just stay away from my bike. So, if you’re at a biker event or party and some drunk ass rat faced son of a bitch that keeps trying to dance with your wife or girlfriend starts to get serious symptoms of heat exhaustion, and faints, what will you do? No! Knocking him out and getting your vice grips to pull his gold teeth and gold fillings after he shows symptoms is not fair and it ain’t helping! If you have to make the decision to help this guy or not, what will you do? Email me at al@rackandpull.com and let me know what you would do. This should be interesting. But right now an ice cold beer sounds better than anything, and I know damn well it’s not the best thing to drink when you’re trying to hydrate. So enough of this shit! I’m done pulling frames and working on bikes today. I’m going home and have a couple beers. Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

RIDE DESTINATION:

Susanville – Alturas – Lakeview, Oregon

Goose Lake

F

or the 4th of July weekend this year, our son and daughter-in law-thought it might be nice to spend 5 or 6 days up in Tahoe. The city puts on a great fireworks show and you can’t beat the area for beauty, so we rented a house and most of us headed up the mountain. We, on the other hand, would take a ‘slight detour’ and meet them there the next day. I had some business to take care of in Oregon so we would be making our way to Lakeview, just a little north of the California border. Deciding to take our time, we mapped out a nice scenic route. It would take us up Highway 70 to Marysville, where we would stop for breakfast. Now ready to go again, we continued on 70 up through Oroville. We took a peak at the Lake and it was good to see it up again. Hopefully the state will spend its ‘infrastructure money’ on, yes…’infrastructure’. Our next stop would be Susanville, but instead of taking our normal route and continuing on 70, we cut north on Highway 149, then northeast on Highway 32. The latter road is a fine road to ride. Some great scenery

and plenty of twists and turns as you pass through the Lassen National Forest. Eventually Highway 32 hooks up with Highway 36, where we took a right, and made our way past Lake Almanor and on into Susanville. Gassed up, it was time for lunch. Across the street was the Mazatlan Grill, so we walked on over. After some excellent Mexican cuisine, it was on to Alturas. We recommend taking Highway 139. It’s a considerably nicer ride than Hwy 395. It meanders up and down some hills, through several canyons, and at one point, along Eagle Lake. Not bad at all. Stopping for a butt break in the little town of Canby, we ran into Max and Ern. They are a couple of Aussies that come over every year and tour around for 5 or 6 weeks. They told us they were on their way to Lake Louise up in the Banff in Canada. That’s going to be our big trip for next year. We had a nice chat. Ern was telling us about some trouble he had with a Park Ranger in New Mexico a while back. Interesting stories from the road. Nice people. We wished them safe travels before we all took off to Alturas and our final destination for the day.

Niles Hotel in Alturas Once in Alturas, we checked out downtown for a bit. Alturas is a real nice little town. An older look, but very clean and tidy in most parts. The Niles Hotel looks like it would be a great place to stay – it reminded Brass Rail in Alturas us of the Holbrooke in Grass Valley. On the way out, we pulled into the Brass Rail for a little break. The Brass Rail is a Basque restaurant with a nice old fashion bar. Didn’t get a chance to eat there this time around, but we will. From Alturas on into Lakeview, it was Hwy 395 all the way. Pretty nice surroundings up through this area. Especially when Goose Lake shows up on the West side. Arriving in Lakeview (the highest altitude city in Oregon), we checked into the Fremont Inn near downtown. Will definitely stay there again. Excellent rooms, Fremont Inn Lakeview OR reasonable rates

and biker friendly. After unpacking, we cruised around town for a while, ending up at the Eagle’s Nest. I believe this is the only Saloon in town. An old dive bar if there ever was one. Had a good time. The next morning, we walked over to the Town Hall Café for some vittles. Before leaving Lakeview, though, we putted over to one of their local attractions, the Perpetual Geyser. It’s not as impressive as Old Faithful, but it does go off every few minutes!

So now it was on to Lake Tahoe. Back on Hwy 395, we had an uneventful ride on down to Reno, where we stopped for lunch at the Grand Sierra, before heading up the mountain to Tahoe. Back with the family, we had a great time for the next several days. By the way, the fireworks show is tremendous. A Full twenty-five minutes of raucous energy that had the massive crowds hoppin’ and jumpin’. Hated to see it end, but we eventually had to head back over the Sierras and into the heat of the valley. Although it’s always nice to get home. Later

STREET VIBRATIONS Spring Rally 2017 June 2-4 (Reno & Carson City, Nevada): Don’t panic – this rally (with the similar name) happens in early June and is the younger sibling of its popular BIG BROTHER the Fall Rally that hits the streets of Northern Nevada at the end of September. Now is the time to make your hotel reservations – and register for VIP packages (www.roadshowsreno.com) check out our EVENTS CALENDAR for more information! It just so happens that we have family in Nevada - so we always look forward to heading to Reno any chance we get! And if we have the opportunity for some motorcycle fun along the way - well that is just a bonus. Downtown Reno is closed off for vendors and local casinos that are eager to welcome riders who rolled into town for some ‘what happens in Reno – stays in Reno’ shenanigans! The sights and sounds of Street Vibrations are unique due to the setting between the buildings on North Virginia Street catching every throttle braaap and echoing it back down into the streets below. Street Vibration promoters - Roadshows does an excellent job bringing in some great bands to entertain the crowd. Not to mention, it is fun to watch motorcycle handling skills with the games taking place. And while you’re there under the iconic Reno arch, it’s a great selfie ‘wish you were here” photo opportunity! Kudos to the folks that utilize the Spring Rally as an ideal time to ’recon’ Northern Nevada for the upcoming Street Vibrations Fall Rally in September. See you all in Reno next month!

BORN FREE 9

June 24-25 (Silverado): So it was to be, the 9th annual gathering of Born Free (BF), arguably considered the crowned jewel of custom motorcycle shows in the world, attracting motorcyclists, skateboarders and general cycle enthusiasts from all parts of the globe partaking in this spectacle quaintly nestled in the Oak Canyon Ranch in Orange County.

The Born Free motorcycle weekend event culminated a week of activities that included Vintage and Hooligan dirt track racing along with parties at the infamous Cooks Corner Bar (where rumor had it TRM NorCal photographer Billie Wilson was hanging out with famed photographer Michael Lichter.) If you didn’t get there early on Saturday morning when the gates opened at 10am, you unfortunately found yourself fighting a line of vehicles getting into the show (like me and a few unfortunate others, as my 76 Shovel Chopper died in route from the hotel -thank god for a chase truck) while throngs of motorcycles whizzed on by getting to the main entrance ahead of all us cages. Once in the show grounds, you entered the gates of what best can be described as a motorcycle circus extravaganzareplete with event banners and Harley-Davidson signs everywhere, reminding you who was the main title sponsor! Looking past the banners, clearly what lay ahead is what attracted thousands to these hallow grounds. “The event was overwhelmingly stimulating” according to Kacey Candido of Lancaster, Ca, who describes herself as a hippy at heart who loves motorcycles. “ I was so in awe of the atmosphere, the eye candy, the motorcycles, friends, food, the music and the unique vendors. ” Sprinkled among the BF confines were 2 stages with bands wailing away their progressive metal rock, a skateboard vert ramp 20+’ high with top trick riders, vendor booths snaking in every which direction within the emerald terra firma grounds surrounded by much welcomed shaded oaks in the 85 deg humidified heat of SoCal. Between the groves of trees were grass laden pastures that played canvas for sections of motorcycle displays divided into the custom motorcycle class, whose builders were vying for top fabricator of the event and the remaining grounds, left reserved for those who purchased passes to be a part of the impromptu bike show, filled in with custom choppers,

antique restored MC’s and just about any other kind of customized motorcycle built decades ago… except scooters, who BF Founders Mike Davis and Grant Peterson stated facetiously that “Nobody likes scooters,” and none were to be found! In the custom category, top builders from around the world competed for “Best in Show” custom award netting the winner a BF one of a kind trophy and a coveted trip to 2017 Mooneyes MC show in Japan. You found your mind literally blown away just trying to comprehend the talent and artistry these masters were putting into all these MC

A few of the many other spectacular works on view were submitted by esteemed builders Toshiyuki Osawa of Cheetah 4d-Japan , Cristian Sosa of Sosa Metal Works - Las Vegas and Alp Sungurtekin of Alp Racing & Design-Los Angeles. BF also featured a special section reserved for FXR bikes that showcased ingenious and dramatic paint schemes that would be the envy of many of the industry’s top customizers. In addition was an impressive collection of 30-50’s period race motorcycles, of which many of these bikes competed at the Costa Mesa Speedway Hooligan-Vintage races, held earlier in the week. USMC Sgt Coltin Davenport of Reno, Nevada stationed in San Diego, rode up for the day on his FXR with buddies to see all the action at BF. Davenport explained he had the tutelage of his grandfather who taught him to appreciate the old shovelheads as well as the FXR’s as he boasted, “Born Free is the place to see it all. Custom bikes and survivors alike, they are all here!” Wandering the grounds, you could have easily bumped into Arlen, Roland, famed Skater Steve Caballero, Corey Hart and Pink or storied Ink Master legend Oliver Peck, all approachable in this chill setting. Being there conjured up the feeling of being part of the Woodstock of Choppers, feeling like an old school gathering from the 70’s attended by free spirited, fun loving bohemian souls all looking for a good time to get together sharing experiences and motorcycles comradery. At what event will you meet a fellow that goes by the name “Dump Truck” who parades around in a leather vest adorned in a speedo? Born Free, that’s where! And he was entertaining to boot getting hugs from all the willing ladies. Make plans early if you have thoughts of going to Born Free 10 next year, because the event only gets bigger each year. Should you have the desire to park your custom on the grass, get the hook up now as these spots sell out quickly due to limited space. Hopefully they don’t outgrow this venue because it’s the ideal spot for what is a well organized chopper orgy with plenty of quality motorcycles and vendors, minimal beer lines and no shortage of restrooms, particularly for the ladies! It was Sgt. Coltin Davenport who exclaimed the sentiments of many of the attendees as his face lit up when he said, “I can’t wait to come back next year to Born Free.“ Article and photos contributed by Gary and Mary Hoffman

70TH ANNIVERSARY

HOLLISTER INDEPENDENCE RALLY

June 30-July 2 (Hollister): The Birthplace of the American Biker once again came alive for the rally. We had been waiting to see what this year would bring after last year being off the hook and since Roadshows was in control of promotions again this year, we knew that the town would be hopping! We were not disappointed as bikers poured into town from far and wide! TRM NorCal gives a big shout out to Indian Motorcycle of Hollister along with 41 Live! for the invitation to set our booth up at the Veterans Memorial Building smack in the center of town. Indian Motorcycle of Hollister transformed this area into The Wild One Saloon during the event. It was a happening place to be and it sounds like it will be back again in 2018. We were fortunate to have our booth there this year, because the week before the rally Terri injured her Achilles tendon and was unable to walk without severe discomfort or having to use crutches. It was an ideal situation and we really enjoyed getting the opportunity to meet new friends and greet some old ones that we had not seen for a while. On Friday morning, San Benito Street was opened to motorcycles only and the streets were filling up fast with bikes;

Thunder Roads MagazineÂŽ Northern California 20

by Saturday morning, it was tough to find a place to park your bike. The entire downtown area and the surrounding streets were full of motorcycles. A sight that I never tire of seeing! Side streets full of a wide variety of vendors along with Harley-Davidson that brought out their big rig. They had a demo bike on display with the new Milwaukee 8 engine that you could demo right on the spot. Imagine never leaving the tent‌ as you straddled the bike - there was big screen in front of you with a visual of riding on a country road along with large fans to simulate the wind in your face. And as you twisted the throttle - the fans blew harder! Just past the H-D set up was the Corbin Stage with live music performances all weekend. Another big attraction was the IMBBA custom bike show. This show brought in some of the best builders around to show off their building talents to the specially trained IMBBA judges, judging the bikes this was a well run show. The highlight was to see two NorCal locals who have had a big impact in the motorcycle industry over their lifetimes be inducted into the IMBBA Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Mike Corbin of Corbin Seats and Jim Guiffra of AFT Customs both recipients are very deserving of this honor. Thunder Roads MagazineŽ Northern California 21

Roadshows once again nailed it with some great tribute bands for the event playing all our favorite tunes. Performing on the main stage were Skynnyn Lynnyrd (Lynyrd Skynrd tribute band), Cruella (all female Motley Crue tribute band), Caravanserai – (a Santana tribute band), Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers (a ZZ Top tribute band), Fog City Swampers (a Credence Clearwater tribute band) along with the Charlie Brechtel Band who celebrated his birthday on the Main stage, plus many more! Another big attraction included Monte Perlin’s Globe of Death & Stunt Show. If you have never seen these guys ride before - you have to make a point of it! Imagine getting in that steel globe on a motorcycle and to ride around in - with centrifugal force being the only thing between them facing certain disaster? YOURS TRULY asked if it would be possible to get inside with the motorcycle as it road around me? You know what? They let me do it - WHAT A THRILL! I took my GoPro in with me and you can see the video on our YouTube channel - Hillon2wheels. Terri wasn’t too thrilled about it…but what a great time! If you had been working on your riding skills, you could Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill. have jumped into the slow races and pit your skills up against Additional photos contributed by Dan Rogers and Devin Chatham other well practiced riders for the chance of earning the bragging rights! This another successful rally and the future See more “behind the scenes’ video of this event on is looking bright for it to return bigger than ever for 2018. I

just got back from an amazing weekend volunteering at Camp Wieser, a retreat for adults fighting cancer. The foundation that puts on these free minicamps for families battling through cancer is called the Me-One Foundation. (www. me-onefoundation.org). It’s an amazing organization helping adults who are facing this horrible disease have a couple of days to be pampered and take their minds off of their obligations so volunteers can pamper and take care of them. From the very moment they get to camp, up until the moment they are driving away, they are showered with love, understanding, and affection. The retreat is for their whole family to enjoy the festivities and activities for an entire weekend, free of charge. They receive the royal treatment from full spa days, manicures, and pedicures to facials, full body massages, and haircuts. There was face painting for the kids, snow cones, tons of games, and fun events for the whole family. They were visited by Moana and Ariel as well as a Hula Dance presentation and evening of Fire Dancing. We had a full-on square-dancing session with a professional squaredance band, and DJ at Frontier Ranch. There was a zip-line, archery, and the ultimate flying squirrel (you had to be there). The food was amazing with fresh organic meals, which included pulled pork, chicken, and BBQ ribs throughout the weekend. There was an awesome ice cream social with crazy sized homemade sundaes. Everyone left with smiles, and tears of gratefulness. Let me tell you that we, as the servers, gained so much more than anything we could have ever given these amazing families. For those serving, there were some very long hot days, but ever so gratifying. We were all thankful that we had the abilities and strength to share with these loving families.

It brought me to a place of gratefulness of everything I take for granted. It humbled me to see a single mom raising two children who just got diagnosed with brain cancer and had brain surgery in March. It made me cry to see a husband hold his wife and child as he shared with the crowd how the cancer she has so far is incurable. We watched person after person show courage like I have never witnessed before. Children that prayed on stage for their parents, sisters and brothers breaking down with hurts and pains one can only imagine. There were words shared throughout the weekend that are just too deep to put down on paper, but they will live with me forever. They talked about having unshakable faith, courage, determination, and a certain kind of grit that made them all come together as one with one purpose to BEAT CANCER TOGETHER! As the weekend came to an end and I stood at the back of the room at our closing ceremonies, I know one thing for sure, Cancer is Non-Biased. As I preach the words of unity and finding ways to bring us all together, I noticed in the crowd there were tall people, short people, large people, skinny people, brown people, black people, white people, blondes, brunettes, and bald ones too. There were old people, young people, and a bunch of in-between people. And I noticed there were a few things that brought these people together; Love, hope, commonality, fear, courage, and the willingness to put things into perspective. And as one gentleman stated in closing, “when you are faced with your own mortality, there is really only a couple of things that become significant, and that is spending quality time with your family, your friends, and breaking down the barriers that are causing the division of separations.” I think we are all in agreement: CANCER SUCKS! 1 Corinthians 13:7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (ESV) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:

SEATWORKS CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE SEATS

T

his month’s BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT feature is located in the Sacramento area, SeatWorks Custom Motor-

cycle Seats (www.SeatWorksCMS.com) is comparable to finding a hidden gem in your own backyard. There are several local custom bike builders that already know about and choose SeatWorks for their custom builds. However, it’s the service behind their products that many bike owners don’t know about…and it’s the premise of this feature article. Owner, Vince Delgado has been customizing motorcycle seats since 1990. He is a craftsman when it comes to how a seat connects the rider with their bike. The outstanding work that Vince does with the visual aesthetics of the seat is second to none, but the real value in what SeatWorks provides to their customers is the entire package. It’s one thing for a seat to match the bike and it look cool; it’s more important of how that seat works for each individual rider. Vince is an expert at fitting a seat to the rider and their riding position on the bike. He typically will be able to get you in a perfect riding position with just one or maybe two fittings. SeatWorks can take your original stock seat and reshape the foam to work better for you, or if you are an extreme case - they can start over by fabricating an entirely new seat pan and shape the seat to your needs. Bikers come in all different shapes and sizes with stock seats generally designed to fit some sort of “average shape” which in reality works for very few. If you are 6’4” and with long legs and arms needing more space – SeatWorks has you covered. Or if you are 5’2” and can’t reach the ground or your controls comfortably SeatWorks can help with that too.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

My name is Ray and I live outside the Sacramento area in a small farming town. My friends and I that grew up together have stayed in touch even though one lives in Acton, Ca. We have been taking an annual trip for years and have seen some beautiful country. This year would be no exception as it would be to Calgary Stampede. Our goal was to hit as many state parks along the way. My only problem was that I had sold my bike earlier in the year. So my friend and I went to Antelope Valley HD and purchased two new Road Glides. After we rode them home approximately 415 miles in one day, I knew I would have to make some modifications for our trip. I am 6 ‘ 4’’ tall so I knew I would have to make some leg room. I explored my options and came across Seat Works ad. I asked around and heard nothing but positive things from the guys at the dealership. I set up an appointment and visited with Vince at his place. The awards he had hanging on his wall and the pictures of past jobs on seats in general spoke for themselves. He listened to what I was trying to accomplish and he made suggestions. He had me come back a couple of times and we made some modification to insure I was pleased. Less than a month later we were on the road with very little time to have broken the seat in. We made a round trip in 9 days with 7 of those days in the saddle. We rode almost 3000 miles during our trip and the seat was the ticket to my comfort. Some days we put some serious miles on and I noticed I was not squirming to get comfortable as I have on past trips. The custom seat was the ticket and I would highly recommend Vince and SeatWorks as he is a master at what he does.

Your position on your motorcycle is extremely important. If you enjoy riding any distance at all - you will know that after awhile you grow a bit uncomfortable and end up trying to shifting in the saddle from side to side to find some relief. Discomfort quickly turns to fatigue and that can impair your ability to concentrate on riding safely. Expertise craftsmanship from SeatWorks will put you in a much more comfortable position on your bike and will improve your confidence at handling your ride in technical situations. The bottom line here is that you cannot beat the value you will get by working with SeatWorks. You can rely on their knowledge and personal attention to your specific needs and desires so you can acquire a saddle that fits you and your motorcycle perfectly. Yuba City Harley-Davidson’s 1st Anniversary Crawfish Boil

June 24 (Yuba City): It was the end of a nine day heat wave, 101 degrees predicted and it got there, but you can’t pick the day your birthday is on. Today was the first anniversary of Yuba City Harley-Davidson. Full day of stuff packed into a few hours. Let’s start with why I go to these events… food! YCHD had a free Crawfish Boil, four pots going most of the day to keep up with the demand. To cool you down ice chests full of cold water and soda.

catch fire on the pipes. If that wasn’t enough the bells would get sucked up in the Injector when you hit second gear and placed your feet on the highway peg… but I digress. Festivities went from noon o’clock to 5 in the PM. Ride on and keep the shiny side up. Article and photos contributed by Rich “Foot” and Jennifer “Sunshine” Elkins

Waiting for Skynnyn Lynnyrd (Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band) to start the music, I went up to introduce myself and to find out where they were from. They were from Yuba City! I knew them! I talked to Vince who was in the old Jimmy & the Jetts 50’s and 60’s band. I really felt bad for the boys in the band having to play in that heat. While waiting for the music to start Sunshine and I cruised the parking lot looking at the bikes, bikini bike wash, and custom car show. Most of the spectators were looking at the vendor booths or catching the sales going on inside. The girls at the bikini bike wash had a few spectators too. I had to leave a tip to have my photo taken with the girls, wonder if that is a deductible or reimbursable expense? One of the highlights of the day was the raffle; I didn’t see it but I was told it was a TV. If the winner came on a bike, I was wondering how they got it home? Sunshine and I were pleasantly surprised with the old school bikes and old timers that attended. While talking to some of them (and I’m including myself) about the old days when we wore bell bottoms. They used to wear out the back in a U shape leaving cotton frayed strings that would Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 29

40 Annual Redwood Run th

June 9-11 (Piercy): 2017 marked the year that a new Kiwanis crew took the fundraising reins on for the 40th annual Redwood Run. This crew of volunteers was undaunted by the upcoming monumental date and from all appearances and the Redwood Run seemed to run fairly smooth by all accounts. Yes attendance was down and if you opted out on this year’s run because you saw a rain cloud in the weather forecast – then YOU BLEW IT! Yeah – yeah – yeah, there were a few intermittent showers on Saturday, but Terri and I both agreed that weather-wise this was the most pleasant Redwood Run that we could remember. It never got too cold and there was never that overwhelming heat that we have been through the last few years. We will take a few sprinkles over 105 degree any day of the week. Regardless of the weather, motorcycling is an outdoor activity and if you are waiting for that perfect 78 degree day to step outside you will almost never ride.

So here is a little recap of what you missed. The music line up this year received a high approval rating by Redwood Runners raving about each performance afterwards! A late night crowd Zakk Sabbath (myself included) was treated to a tradition with The Fryed Brothers Band upping the amps into the wee hours of Sunday morning beneath a full moon. Spectators did get a little damp during the wet T-shirt contest as the skies opened up as if on cue, and that just added to the on stage antics. Fortunately, the clouds parted just in time to dry the pavement enough for a kick ass wheelie/burnout show up the hill from the pit. It’s always an exciting and popular part of the Redwood Run! Down by the Eel River, there was a new bar set up called the The Kickstand Lounge where you could listen to some tunes, pick up a big can of Fosters and play a large game of Jenga with your buddies. We thought this year seemed to have a special vibe going as the camaraderie was high with party goers. We enjoyed the picturesque Humboldt setting that included dark rain clouds, breaks of sunshine with rainbows popping up to be even more beautiful than usual. As for next year, Kiwanis’s new committee appears to have a firm grip on what it takes to raise money for the local kids and keep Redwood Runners coming back! We recommend that you start making your plans now regardless of the potential weather forecast because the 41st Redwood Run is sure to be another kick ass good time! T

ony Silva of Stockton contacted us about his H-D Wide Glide which intrigued me to say the least, but after laying eyes on it we could not wait to share his passion. Most people will buy a new bike and then they’ll start to research and buy all kinds of after-market parts to customize it the way they want it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that as there are several high quality after-market companies out there. But Tony had the idea to buy an older Harley and then adapt later model H-D parts to it to achieve his vision. He does all of the work himself in his one car garage which includes machine work, welding, fabrication and bodywork, he even does his own powder coating - that I have to say was spot on. Along with some help from his nephew, they even painted this bike. Everything about this bike looks top notch and you can tell that the work was done with the pride that only comes from doing it yourself. This RIDE PRIDE started out as a 1985 Wide Glide, now it is a mix of parts that range from 1985 to 2008. There are only 5 parts on this bike that are not Harley-Davidson the handle bars, exhaust, oil tank, passenger seat pad and the license plate bracket. 17th Annual Fort Sutter Chapter Antique Motorcycle Club of America

National Motorcycle Show & Swap Meet

June 16-17 (Dixon): As a proud member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, I couldn’t wait until my motorcycle became old enough to take to the AMC shows. Every time I go, I see a motorcycle that I have never heard of. I like to talk with the owner because I always learn something like, “In 1918, a bicycle company started putting engines on their bikes, they only made 15 motorcycles before the company went under”. Then you find out there are only two known that still exists, and this one is the only running example. You know you’re looking at something very special. If I could only go to one bike show a year, this meet at the Dixon Fairgrounds would be the one.

One of the most unusual motorcycle at the meet was a 1948 Vincent Hill Climber.

One of the first things to catch my eye was a HarleyDavidson Topper with a sidecar. This is the one and only scooter to ever come out of the H-D factory. The Topper featured a 165 cc air-cooled 2-stroke engine with of all things, a CVT. For a bike over 50 years old, this Topper was in great shape and the sidecar looked like a lot of fun. I had never even heard of this very cool scooter.

Glen Kyle and Beese Wendt rode this bike to the ten National Championships in the late 60s and 70s. A standard Vincent nitro (98 percent) powered race engine with propyleneoxide sometimes mixed into the nitro for an “exciter”. It was equipped with a lengthened rear frame and telescoping front forks. This bike saw action in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan and New England. Crowds of 15,000 to 25,000 were not uncommon. Courses varied, from 200–1000 ft and angles from 20º to near vertical. With so many jumps and bumps on them could get you twenty to thirty feet in the air.

1916 Henderson F-2speed Owner Craig & Shirley Horner

Vincent Hill Climber in action

It was a popular belief that “The Henderson motorcycles were the finest motorcycles in the world”. The four-cylinder Henderson were the largest and fastest motorcycles of the time and were favored by both police departments and sports riders because of their speed. The Henderson Motorcycle Co. was formed in Detroit, Michigan. It featured a four-

cylinder, 7 horsepower engine. The brothers felt that they could produce 1,000 machines in the first year. In 1913, Carl Glancy rode a Henderson around the world which greatly enhanced the Henderson reputation. The standard model sold for $295 and the two-speed sold for $325. By 1916, the Henderson was so popular that Henderson could not produce enough motorcycles to keep up with the demand.

1914 Flying Merkel Owner Wes Allen This article would not be complete without talking about the “The Flying Merkel”. The founder of the company, Joe Merkel, began designing engines for motorcycles in 1902, years before Harley-Davidson. Merkel built his own motorcycles in 1903, including a one-cylinder engine with a capacity of 316 cc, which was also used in the contemporary Indian. In 1910, he offered the first two-cylinder engine and in 1911 the machine was named “The Flying Merkel”. It had a bright and shiny orange paint which was later described as “Merkel Orange”. Sadly, production ceased in 1915.

includes enthusiasts from many parts of Northern California. I can’t wait to see what gets restored this winter and will be on display under the trees next year. Article and photos contributed by Roxanne Morales and Wild Bill Hill. Additional photo contributed by Jenny Darr.

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America was founded in 1954 to preserve, restore, and exhibit motorcycles that are more than 35 years old. It now has more than 11,000 members nationwide. The Fort Sutter Chapter of the AMCA was created in 1982. There were a dozen founding members, all from the Sacramento, California area. The Chapter now

2017 Dyna Raffle Winner Dave Walters of Fairfield

Raffle 1Bike

Vallejo Red and White End of June Party June 24 (Vallejo): It was dusk when I left Folsom and regrettably looked at the temperature display in the valley on my bike lingering at 100 degrees. I couldn’t help but to twist the throttle towards the cool night of the east bay. By the time I rolled up to the Vallejo Clubhouse, the temperature gauge on my bike said it was 65 degrees! What a relief!

More good things were to come as the party got under way with a great meal and lots of good company. Inside - the music had the place rockin’ and the bar busy and working like clockwork. The guys brought in a mechanical bull to entertained everyone as they laughed at their buddies getting bucked off one after another. There were a few guys and gals that hung in there pretty good! Next time, I might throw my camera down and give it a shot myself. Later in the evening, it was time to give away some great raffle prizes before the big bike raffle went down. The raffle ticket was drawn and fortunately for the bike winner - Dave Walters was from down the road in Fairfield. He was told he needed to get there in 15 minutes to claim his prize or the bike would be gone. Dave made it in about 25 minutes and the bike was still there! He was very excited to have the good fortune of winning a brand new 2017 DYNA, congratulations Dave, I am sure there are many miles of riding pleasure in store for you! This was a fun night so I would recommend that next time Vallejo Red and White has a party to come on out - you will not be disappointed. Article and photos by Stan Hill

Mike Clinton of Clinton’s Custom Cycles

High Hand Winner

June 24 (Lincoln): It was sweltering 108 degrees during the 6 Annual Clinton’s Custom Cycle RTW Poker Run & Biker Bash, but that didn’t deter the riders and participants for this year’s event. The Ride to Walk Ranch’s mission is to enhance the lives of children and young adults with neurological disabilities that are recreational in nature and are adapted to the individual’s needs and abilities. Children and young adults, with a wide range of physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities benefit from the therapeutic riding and other equine activities. The types of disabilities and conditions served include autism, brain injuries, cardiovascular accident/stroke, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, spinal bifida, spinal cord injuries and the list goes on. Each year volunteers, sponsors, vendors, entertainment and bikers show up to make a difference in the lives of these children. The Poker Run starts out at Clinton’s Custom Cycles, where the riders were given their first poker card, then on to the Silver Dollar Saloon in Marysville, for the next card. The Tack Room in Penn Valley was the third stop along the way with the last stop th

at the Valencia Club in Penryn, before heading out to the Biker Bash located at the Ride To Walk Ranch on Hwy 193 in Lincoln. The riders were met with a full-blown biker bash in progress. The Jackson Stone Band was playing some good ol biker music; Jason Pullen was doing a last minute bike check before his show. Cold beer and other beverages were on ice and ready to serve the thirsty bikers. Bill Holland of Executive Choppers was there as the bikers rode in to judge the ride-in bike show. Bill Holland is one of the founding fathers of the Harman/Holland internally sprung girder. Mr. Holland was very generous with his time and talents for the RTW Ranch and created a one of a kind trophy for first place bike show winner - Ron Gayton with his 1978 shovelhead. Even with the 108 plus temperatures people still got out on the dance floor dancing to some great cover and originals by Jackson Stone Band. The band autographed and raffled off an acoustic fender guitar that was donated by the son of the late “Fast Eddie” who was a collector of guitars and other stuff. Roger Bacon won the outstanding guitar.

Jason Pullen and his stunt team gave the audience a show of a lifetime…and what a show it was. It’s just amazing what Jason Pullen and his team can do on their bikes. Yea, lots of bikers can do wheelies, but not like Jason does; Backwards, standing up, standing sideways, balancing the bike with one hand. The list goes on and on with their unique way of entertaining the audience. Jason and his team are awesome. Lots of raffle prizes. Everything from oil changes to helmets to full riding courses. Craig Paras won the 50/50 raffle. Besides the money he got his picture taken with 2 lovely models: Kendra and Alida. But the best item raffled off was a painting by Emma, our poster child for this years Poker Run. Emma paints colorful masterpieces with her feet. Emma suffers from HIE, a brain dysfunction caused by a reduction in the supply of oxygen to the brain and other organs (hypoxia), compounded by low blood flow to vital organs (ischemia). Rick Guidera has been the high bidder two years in a row and proudly displays Emma’s artwork on the wall behind his easy chair. RTW coordinators were so honored to have Hillon2wheels on hand to give RTW some air-time on their YouTube channel! A big shout-out

to all our sponsors, contributors, vendors, bikers and everyone who donated their time and talents to make the 6th Annual Clinton’s RTW Poker Run & Biker Bash possible for the Ride To Walk Children. Born To Win MC/CC 1st Annual Family Picnic

June 25 (Hayward): For a first time picnic, this new club Born To Win had the event well organized. From the start while riding up to Kennedy Park in Hayward, we were greeted with whoops and hollers as we parked our Road King amidst many bikes that were already there. Dan jumped off the bike headed straight for his Nikon to get a great shot of the bikes all lined up for the day. Among the Clubs there were Born To Win, Saints and Sinners, Pacific Savages, Malicious, Pure Platinum, Rogue Militia, Island Thunder, Marines MC, Mad Dog, Peace Maker, Lake Rats, Xtreme Vixens, She Devils, and Bay Bizness. It was great seeing this Club so popular. I know by the next picnic, news is going to get out about the food they served that was catered by Big Mama of the She Devils MC - it was delicious and there was a lot of it! Second helpings were not a problem! Club member Pistol Pete hit by a car some time ago, came out of a coma in time to attend this event. Everyone was so thankful for his miraculous road to recovery which will take some time more. He’s strong and a fighter. President Viper enjoys his dad’s support for the Club. Pop’s rode up in his beautiful cherry red Dodge HEMI, lookin good! Stunt

rider Rob rode his awesome custom bike done by Suicidal in Hayward. Cool prizes were raffled off. Winners picked what they liked off the table which is a great way to get exactly what you want. Next time…I’m gonna buy raffle tickets like Big Mama does – she is always winning stuff! Kids played in the playground or rode the train or merry go-round. Lots of fun and we are definitely looking forward to their 2nd annual next year. Article and photos contributed by Nad Parham and Dan Rogers.

BIKER BAND REVUE:

T

The Swankmasters

he Swankmasters is a cover band embracing master musicians performing a diverse mix of music hits that capture the feel and mood from the 60s, 70›s, 80›s, and 90›s. Their song list covers a variety of music genres including pop, rock, and funk, disco, metal…(Taken from the Swankmasters website) When Zach and Michelle were married, the band consisted of three pieces: a drummer, guitar player and Zach on Bass. Zach also sang, only because the other two refused to. They were constantly interviewing singers, but nothing panned out for a long time commitment. One day Michelle came into the band room, as they were once again interviewing another singer and said: “Dude, you’re terrible.” A little stunned at her response Zach replied, “Well show him how to do it” and she did, finishing the song Michelle said, “That’s how you do it”. Zach stood there speechless. Michelle had never expressed a desire to be part of the band, and the only time he heard her sing was around the house, but never really paid close attention. Michelle has been the lead vocalist ever since! The original name of The Swankmasters was SMUT. After a 10 year run they changed the name to The Swankmasters and in 2014, they were voted “Best Rock Band in NorCal”. Zach Johnson: Bass – As the founder of The Swankmasters, Zach says he is a funkster all the way, but the other musicians in the band also bring to the table a blend of rock, heavy metal and other genre’s, just about everything except country. They love to incorporate multiple songs mashed together, meaning they will start with one song, playing it half way through and switch to another song with a completely different genre. They are not afraid to “get out of the box” experiencing various ways of playing their music. The end result is a refreshing approach. Michelle Johnson: Lead Vocals - Michelle comes from a musical background and inherited her love for music from her father and uncle, both were professional musicians. Michelle has sang all of her life, but not professionally until she began singing with the SwankMasters. It’s hard to imagine that inside Michelle’s petite frame is a sultry powerful voice that can belt out a song as well as the original artist (if not better). Michelle is also a songwriter. She has written the lyrics to many songs yet to be recorded. It’s her passion for music that makes this little woman hold her audience captive till the last note. Michelle kicks off her shoes listens with her feet the sound of each instrument, once she feels the bass (played by her husband Zach) this shy and slightly nervous vocalist goes into her happy place and the party is on!

Paige: Rhythm Guitar - A psychology major at UCD, Paige has a very gentle personality, which Zach defines as the sunshine of the band. Paige’s performance is one of experience as a rhythm guitarist, providing a good feel for Michelle to sing over. Her mom Cindy also travels with the band. Cindy says her favorite thing to say is “I’m with the band”. I had to smile when she said that. I’ve met a few people that travel with the band. They are far from groupies; they are the ones that handle everything from scheduling their gigs, to security, to being there for each one of them in what ever capacity it is. Zach say’s she’s the hairdo of the band. Another more familiar saying is “she’s the backbone of the group”. Justin Rankin: Lead guitar / Back-up vocals Justin began playing at 14. He is self-taught. After high school, Justin decided to take a break from music, but a short time later picked it back up. He felt the best way to get back into it was to join a band and make the commitment needed to play with a group. Justin also plays the saxophone, but not professionally at this point. Justin laughed when asked about his position in the band. As lead Guitar and back-up vocals he said it’s hard work doing both at the same time. Don’t walk well and chew gum at the same time was his response. I also had to laugh. From a spectators stand point of view, you would never guess he had to concentrate on the two; He looks as natural as a duck in water and loving every bit of it. When Justin isn’t playing with the band, he’s over at Yuba City Harley working as a service technician. Stop by and say hi next time you’re over that way. T.K. : Drummer - has just recently become the drummer, replacing Darren Minter that left in good graces to pursue another one of life journeys. T.K played air drums from the age of 12 till high school graduation. Occasionally the band teacher at his school would let him play the drums in the band room. The rest of the time, T.K. played the saxophone in the school jazz band. He bought his first set of drums the same time he moved out of his parent’s house, and his roommates loved it. T.K. also loves photography, and was shooting at a Swankmasters performance, during the course of the evening it was announced that the SwankMasters were looking for a drummer. T.K. Emailed Zach the images, and a note that said I play the drums, T.K. auditioned for the position. Three days later Zach called him…we have a gig in one week, are you in? T.K. had to do the impossible and learn 46 covers and a couple of originals. Flying by the seat of the pants, TK got through the gig, but doesn’t take any credit for it. He said the only way he made it through was because of the great communication between himself and the rest of the band. T.K. also has another great quality, he sings well. Michelle loves this quality and often has him do back-ups in a performance. When asked; what were their future plans for the band, Michelle said she would like to play more funk. Tech Tips L

TECH TIPS: SPARK PLUGS II

ast month we hashed over the fundamentals of spark plugs. Now we can take a look at how spark plugs can help diagnose engine problems and assist in tuning fuel delivery. We can start with a normal spark plug. A light tan to grey color is indicitive of normal combustion. Photo1

Carbon/fuel fouled plugs are a result of an overly rich air/ fuel mixture. The appearance is a black, sooty deposit on the electrode and insulator. Photo2 Plugs that are covered in a wet black deposit are oil fouled. This is a result of worn piston rings, valve guides, or valve guide seals. Photo3 Using plug condition (plug reads) to tune fuel delivery is fairly straight forward. Although not difficult to do with a carbureted bike, it’s nearly impossible to accomplish with a fuel injected set up unless the fuel tuner has a manual adjustment for the basic operating ranges. Precise tuning by adjusting maps would be far too tedious and should be accomplished on a dyno, auto-tune systems not withstanding! We’ll cover EFI tuning in a future issue. To tune your carbureted bike, plug readings must be accomplished in separate, distinctive operating power

bands (circuits). For each circuit, the bike must be operated in that specific rpm range. As an example, if you’re checking the low range you will have to ride the bike in that rpm band (for V-Twins it would be just off idle to approximately 2500 rpm), then pull in the clutch lever while chopping the throttle and immediately shut down the engine. Coast to a safe location and pull the plugs. The condition will be indicative of fuel delivery in that circuit. Disable the accelerator pump (if equipped) or your readings will be innacurate. Keep in mind that the rpm parameters will vary a few hundred rpm for different carburetors. You’ll have to read up on your particular carb and tune accordingly. We have a series on carburetor tuning that covers most of the popular brands. We will re-run these articles in future issues. The process is the same for mid-range and top-end tuning. Keep in mind that conduncting tuning runs on public roads can be dangerous. Use a closed course where traffic variables and other hazards are not an issue. Of course the safest option is a dyno tune by a shop. No road hazards to worry about! Ride safe! Additional information can be found www.twogunnerscustomiron.com. See us on Facebook

A delightful angelic looking little boy was waiting for his mother outside the ladies room of the gas station. As he stood there, he was approached by a man who asked, “Sonny, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” Little Johnny replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your right. It’s on the left.” The man thanked the boy kindly, complimented him on how bright he was and said, “I’m the new Pastor in town. If you and your mommy come to church on Sunday, I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” Little Johnny replied with a chuckle; “You’re shitting me, right? You can’t even find the Post Office.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dearest Dad, I am coming home to get married soon, so get your check book out. I’m in love with a boy who is far away from me. As you know, I am in Australia ... and he lives in Scotland. We met on a dating website, became friends on Facebook , had long chats on Whatsapp. He proposed to me on Skype, and now we’ve had two months of a relationship through Viber. My beloved and favorite Dad, I need your blessing, good wishes, and a really big, expensive wedding to commemorate this memorable day. Lots of love and thanks. Your favorite daughter, Lilly The Reply: My Dearest Lilly, Like Wow! Really? Cool! Whatever ... I suggest you two get married on Twitter, have fun on Tango, buy your kids on Amazon, and pay for it all through PayPal. And when you get fed up with this new husband, sell him on eBay. Love, your only Dad --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you had to choose marriage over fishing……. would you choose saltwater or freshwater?

Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say what it is you want! Yes and no are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it, that’s what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days. If you think you’re fat, you probably are. Don’t ask us. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that. If we ask what is wrong and you say “nothing,” we will act like nothing’s wrong. We know you are lying, but it’s just not worth the hassle and additional talking. If you ask a question you don’t want an answer to, expect an answer you don’t want to hear. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine... really! Don’t ask us what we’re thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as football, hunting, fishing, home projects, that weird sound coming from my motorcycle. I am in shape; round is a shape! Thank you for reading this. Yes, i know, i have to sleep on the couch tonight; but did you know men really don’t mind that? It’s like camping out to us, and we typically just watch porn till early into the morning. * Have this made into a sign and post proudly in your Man Cave. If you don’t have a Man Cave, come on dude, grow a pair.

Ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for Freedom…..until they’re flashing behind you. Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool. I gave him a to-go cup of water. Next time you’re looking in the mirror and thinking negative thoughts; remember this: You’ are not fat! You’re just easier to see. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We always hear “The Rules” from the female side. Now, here are the rules from the Male side. MAN RULES. NO Exceptions. Men are not mind readers. Learn to work the toilet seat. You’re a big girl. if it’s up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don’t hear us complaining about you leaving it down. Sunday sports it’s like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be. If I ask for what you want……. Let’s be clear on this one: subtle hints do not work! Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 53
