e are growing once again and as we are always looking for different, informative and entertaining content to share in the magazine. This month, we are very excited to introduce a new monthly column brought to you each month by Joelle “Xmas” Fraser - author of HardRider Press. Her column XMAS STORIES will be a series of short stories that are entertaining and all revolve around our two wheeled lifestyle. Come by our booth at upcoming events because as part of our Thunder Roads Magazine® NorCal family she will be welcome at our booth and eager to meet all of you and even sign a copy of her book when she is available to join us. We’d also like to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to the following folks that generously contribute articles on a monthly basis. • Craig Griswold and Mary Kirby of Two Gunners Custom Iron in Penn Valley who do an outstanding job each month giving you TECH TIPS that are helpful when you’re wrenching on your bike to keep it safely on the road. • Pastor Johnny Lujan of THUNDER ROAD BIKER CHURCH in Rancho Cordova offers thought provoking articles that make us pause in our busy lives to consider our spiritual wellbeing and how it affects those around us. • Chuck and Cindy Loseth’s RIDE DESTINATION articles – Chuck and Cindy are tireless in their pursuit to share their day rides or a weekend getaway in NorCal (and occasionally beyond) for a scenic adventure that you can plan a trip in the future with your friends. • Al Cagle from Rack and Pull Industries with MY TWO CENTS. Al’s informative and thought provoking subjects are invaluable as he shares situations and experiences from his years on and off the bike topped off with his knee-slapping sense of humor. • Foot and Sunshine Elkins COUNTY CROSSROADS. Currently unable to ride due to shoulder surgery, Foot and Sunshine will at times “cage it” to contribute an article about various county events around NorCal that might not be typically “biker related” like a Beer Festival, Garlic Festival or Strawberry Fest - you name it. There is a lot to see and do from the seat of you motorcycle and they will share some great ideas for a change of pace. We have been fortunate to have them on board since our very first issue! • Russell Holder’s THE RAZ REPORT. Russell has also been with us from the beginning and although his articles are not quite every month – they are pretty dern’d close! Raz often brings his own unique spin and interesting perspective to his articles which we appreciate, because it comes from being a lifelong biker with a wide-range of motorcycle related interests. Raz is “old school” and there is no doubt about it, it is truly is ALL about the bike (especially Knuckleheads) and the older - the better! We cannot fully express just how grateful we are to have all of you and the many others that contribute to our publication each month, so we will just simply say…THANK YOU! Tech Tips I

S&S Gear Drive Camshaft Upgrade

n this series of alternatives to the Harley-Davidson spring loaded cam chain tensioner shoes (pre-2007 Big Twin/2006 Dyna) we come to the final, and the most robust of all upgrades, S&S’s gear drive cam kit. This kit eliminates the chain drive system altogether. There are several advantages to a gear drive system. Since there are no tensioner shoes, the need for periodic inspection is eliminated. A solid economic argument if you are paying your favorite shop to do the deed. For the horsepower junkies, the more radical cam profiles are much tougher on valve train parts, especially cam shoes. The fast opening ramps place a lot of strain on the chains. Gear drives offer a solid mechanical means of moving the cams. And lastly, there is a minor amount of timing lag as a result of shoe wear and chain stretch. This would certainly be more prominent with performance cams. In the give and take world of high performance, when there are advantages there are disadvantages. First and foremost, S&S states a tolerance of no more than .003” run-out on the pinion shaft. I can’t quote you any stats on the percentage of flywheels that exceed that run-out, but they are in the minority. Based on the number we have seen in our shop I could take a SWAG and say about a quarter of them. It’s worth mentioning that Harley D. sets the run-out new specification at .000 - .010” and .015” service wear. That enough to shake your fillings loose should your motor fall into the outer limits of that spec! Measure that run-out before making the cam purchase!

an adjustable set that are specifically for this set up. The nomenclature will state “easy install” or “quick install” or words to that effect. Not all adjustable pushrods are of the type that will install with the top end intact. The Screamin Eagle kit is excellent quality and most certainly the most economic choice. Remember to unload the valve train on the cylinder from which you are cutting the pushrods. This requires rotating the engine until the lifters on one of the cylinders are at their lowest point of travel (on the cam base circle). To be certain, the opposite cylinder’s lifters will be moving. The intake will be ascending while the exhaust descending. Follow S&S’ instructions for install. The cam kit will come with replacement inner and outer bearings. The inner bearings will be the superior Torrington style full complement bearing. Although the stock INA bearings are adequate for stock applications, the Torrington is much stronger. As a rule if you have the occasion to go into the cam chest for any reason, spend a few bucks and replace the INA bearings regardless of cam choice. Also, you’ll notice the outer bearings that come with this kit are both ball type. The gear drive does not need a roller for the rear cam as the side forces that exist in chain drives are eliminated. This is by far the strongest cam drive set-up for the Twin Cam engine. Although a great system for any cam install, it is a must for radical cam applications such as those in or above the .640” lift neighborhood.

Ride safe!

If you read the previous month’s tips this will be a bit redundant, but I’ll mention briefly some key points. One exception to following your service manual procedure for removing your cams is the removal of the stock pushrods. Unless you have a reason to disassemble the rocker assemblies (leaking gaskets, high mileage rocker arm bushings that may need replacing) you can leave them intact and bolt cut the stockers. Replace them with Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

COUNTY CROSSROADS:

12th Annual Midnight Mass

(Yolo County) County Crossroads is about doing things with your bike other than the traditional Poker Run, Benefit Run or Bike Night. These articles are about showing you there are other options, some good, some not so good, but it gets your butt in the saddle and on the road. Open your minds because the opportunities (to ride) are endless to what California has to offer. This month Sunshine and I decided on something a little different, the 12th Annual Midnight Mass put on by the Poor Boys Car Club and the 3rd time at the Woodland Fairgrounds. (www.yolocountyfair.net/ events/2015/11th-annual-poor-boys-midnight-mass-car-show) Walking through the gates of the Woodland Fairgrounds was like stepping through a time warp. The guys were dressed in Levi’s, T-shirts and converse, their hair greased back with Dapper Dan Pomade and a pack of cigs rolled up in their T-shirts. The gals well they were dress to the nines with the big hair, full skirts, make-up, high heels, parasols, glasses and all the accessories. The cars were stripped down hot rods and cars from another time period with lots of fender skirts, continental kits and window coolers. Walking around the vendor building brought me back to a time when I started building cars. Laid out on tables were parts and accessories that I haven’t seen in years. The club “Backseat Betties” were there raising money for and supporting the Wounded Warrior Project and helping with the Miss Midnight Mass Pinup contest. Every year the Pinup contest is one of the big draws. Sunshine and I grabbed a good spot to view the bathing beauties early, by the time the judging started we were stacked like sardines. Miss Midnight Mass pageant hosted by Cherry D’lish (local model) & Rob Ely (Elvis impersonator) brought a sea of people to view the beach blanket babes. All day long the rockabilly music played on stage with bands such as Sneaky Tiki’s, Hank Biggs and the Hardtops, Rebel Punk, Cash Prophet (tribute to Johnny Cash) and The Rev Tones. A few couples were dancing by the shade of the trees just right of the stage. Although, Midnight Mass was promoted as a car show the bikes had a good turn out by old school customs with bikes scattered about the fairgrounds, Sunshine and I got a big surprise when we exited the fairgrounds where we found hundreds of bikes parked outside. The biker community was defiantly in the building! It was our first time at the Midnight Mass and I don’t know how we missed this event for so many years, we won’t next year! Ride on and keep the shiny side up. Article and photos contributed by Rich “Foot” and Jennifer “Sunshine” Elkins. Additional photos contributed by Taleah Ebey of T3 Designs

8TH ANNUAL CAMP KOMRATTO: BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME July 10-12 (Middletown): One would think that after 8 years of putting on an event that things would happen like clockwork and fall into place. This was not the case this year for the Good Ol’ Boys MC. They first learned that their venue of 6 years had closed their business due to the owner’s health issues. But without missing a beat, event organizers relocated their event to another campground in Lake County to Middletown’s Big Pines Campground. The plan was to arrive mid week to set up for the 8th Annual Camp KomRatto, an event to honor the memory of their two friends - Dave Komro and Larry Ratto. Friends gather each year to raise money to carry on their passion to financially assist local kids with sports (Dave Komro Youth Sports Award) and music (Larry Ratto Youth Music Scholarship). Upon their arrival at the campsite....it was overgrown with weeds and an abundance of trash that could have easily started a landfill...Yes...it was THAT bad. Not to be dissuaded, the GOB MC and along with KomRatto’s army of volunteers took charge of the site as they mowed, weed whacked, gathered trash and built 3 stages to create a biker city! They were so persistent that even the rainstorms didn’t dampen their enthusiasm. By the time we arrived on mid morning on Friday, the biker city was ramping up for a full on celebration. We rolled in and found our camping buddies Big Bob and Steve from previous Camp KomRatto’s already set-up,

before you knew it - it was on....if you know what I mean? We made our rounds saying hello to the various vendors and the Good Ol Boys MC, but because it was early you could sense the overall apprehensiveness of the possibility of a low attendance due to the recent rainstorms. Remember the movie - Field of a Dreams? “Build it and they will come” And THAT is exactly what happened! Next thing you knew here comes the headliner band - the Moonshine Bandits

Double Standyrd

See more photos from this event at www.ThunderRoadsNorCal.com Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

Tour Bus was making its way through the campground heading toward the backstage to prepare for their show later that night. Meanwhile, Ukiah’s own Double Standyrd was doing a fabulous job performing and entertaining camp goers. Some folks were getting some new ink and others were doing some vendor shopping. The KomRatto bartenders were busy serving up adult beverages along with some pretty potent favored Jell-O shots, which by the way was very helpful to fuel the gals as the crowd cheered on their pole dancing talents. Throughout both days, there was a raffle drawing…EVERY hour!! And the Moonshine Bandits brought it “Calicountry-style” hitting the stage with “Whiskey in My Soul” and “Dive Bar Beauty Queen” entertaining a Shiner Nation as they proudly were waving their “fingers in the air” ! Afterwards, Bird and Tex made it a late night of mingling backstage - so much so that we were surprised to see their tour bus remained parked behind the stage the next morning! We had another event that we were obligated to attend so we missed out on the Saturday shenanigans like the bike games, the crowning of the new Miss KomRatto, music from Roadside Attraction, Bad Boy Eddie, Electric Funeral, Mad Jack and Saturday’s headliner and a favorite local band – Aqua Nett. We’re looking forward to see what the Good Ol’ Boys MC and the KomRatto Army have in store for next year! And there you have it - the making of another epic and memorable Camp KomRatto! MY TWO CENTS: Hot Times!

It was Saturday morning and hot as hell outside. I’m on my way to the Delta to meet my son Allen for a beer and a burger. As I pull up to Fosters Bighorn, I see his bike parked in front and he’s sitting outside on a bench having a smoke. We greet with a hug and decide to go for a ride before we eat and have a brew. The levees are always fun to ride and we took advantage of the empty roads and we never even seen another bike or car on that ride. After a couple of hours on the hot and windy levee roads we pull into Al the Wop’s for a ice cold beverage and some grub. If you’ve ever been to al the Wops then you’ll know this is the place to power down a big meal with a couple of brews. The restaurant is cool and comfortable with air conditioning and we had a glass of water and a beer with our lunch. We had a great time just kicking back and shooting the shit and talking about the ride and we both made note that there were no bikers on the road, and we noticed there were no bikers in the bar either. That was strange. We walked outside and the heat hit us like a ton of bricks. I don’t remember it being that hot when we got there about an hour and a half earlier. We went back inside and pounded another glass of water and headed back outside to hit the road. We started laughing when we got outside and Allen said “What were we thinking? We must be crazy to ride in this heat?” We talked about how dangerous it could be riding in this heat and we gotta stay hydrated with water, not booze. We rode to the end of the street and he rode off to the left and I rode off to the right, towards home. I made my way to the freeway, cruising at about eighty miles an hour

and I’m sweating like a slave. The sweat dripping from my eye brows is burning my good eye. I can feel the heat frying my face. My lips are dry and cracked. My mouth and throat are dirt dry and I couldn’t carry on a conversation if had to. I see a sign on an old brick building that says 113 degrees. I see heat waves dancing on the freeway pavement, which by the way, looks damp and shiny and I wonder if the heat is making the oil rise up. I remember thinking “I’m so thirsty I would commit a felony for an ice cold frosty beer right now.” I know damn well I should drink water or Gatorade instead of booze to hydrate myself, but a beer sounds so good right now! Then I realized why there was nobody on the road today. It’s too friggin hot! You’d have to be crazy or an idiot to ride in this heat. Just when I started feeling like an idiot, some guy on a sport bike with a big ass rear tire flies by me at about 110 mph. The guy was wearing gym shorts, a tank top and boat shoes and for safety measures a full face helmet. Bam! There’s your idiot! Straight up, I knew I was just crazy! To each his own, but a little common sense goes a long way. Imagine the damage a body would sustain wearing that outfit and going down at over a hundred miles an hour. Better yet, screw it, don’t think about it and certainly don’t ride in that outfit! Riding a motorcycle is fun one of the most dangerous things to do, so protect your feet, leave the boat shoes on deck and for crying out loud, put on some pants! That’s my two cents. 75th Annual Sturgis Rally Part One

I

t looks like the young-uns are off to school again. I recall some of my teachers asking us to write an essay on some of the things we did over summer vacation. Well, if I had to do it today, I would definitely write about my foray into the Black Hills of South Dakota for the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. First though, I’d like to say that I really missed having my better half with me this time. Our daughter Amy was due during the rally and Cindy stayed home just in case our granddaughter came early. It felt at times like something was missing, like there was a hole in the day or something. I managed though and as it turned out, Dagny waited until I got back before she came into this world. Ok, back to story. Packed and ready to go, I rode on out into the morning sun. Ya know for a freeway, I80 is pretty darn scenic. Early afternoon found me in Winnemucca at ‘The Pig BBQ’. Excellent chow! Cajun shrimp and ribs,

yeowsa! I finished up a 617 mile day in Twin Falls, ID. Hello, Motel 6. Next morning I’m off to Yellowstone National Park. Plan for the day? Come in through the West Entrance, eventually pick up the Beartooth Highway (SR212) and then make it over the Pass into Red Lodge MT. As many times as I’ve been in the area and/or through Yellowstone, I’m almost

embarrassed that I hadn’t done the Pass. Wow! Ridiculously awesome! Tight twists and turns climbing two miles high and then down again on the backside. Unbeatable scenery all round. I’m planning to come back as soon as I can. Actually, I almost missed it again this time. On SR20, about 60 miles from the West entrance, I saw black storm clouds forming in the distance. I had heard the Pass was no easy task and I wasn’t going to try it in a storm. The weather held up and by the time I reached the Pass, it had pretty much cleared up. Yaaay! So after a memorable ride through Yellowstone and Beartooth Pass, I rolled into Red Lodge and checked into the Pollard Hotel - a great place to stay with a real nice pub. The restaurant happened to be closed, so I wandered up the street and had a fine dinner at the Bridge Creek Backcountry. Up and at it the next day, I visited the folks at Beartooth

I think I’m going to have to try and make that next year. www.beartoothrally.com I headed north out of town and made my way to Billings and pulled off. I wanted to see if Cobb Field was still there. I played ball there 46 years ago while in the minor leagues. The ballpark had been renovated, although on the same site. It’s Dehler Park now. So continued... Inside Indian Memorial

Where They Fell after a little nostalgia trip, I was back on I90 and heading to the Custer Memorial. I think most everyone knows what General Custer’s fate was. He underestimated the Lakota and Cheyenne strength, split his command, was cut off and destroyed before reinforcements could arrive. If you enjoy history, the Little Bighorn Battlefield is certainly worth seeing if you are in the area. Now it was time to get back on SR212 and finish my trek to the Sturgis area. I made my way into Spearfish and took the Canyon Road (14A) to my diggs for the week. Actually in Lead, it was a beautiful cabin set up high against the granite walls of Spearfish Canyon. I met the owner out at the highway and he suggested that I hop in his

Red Lodge MT

truck and check out the approximately quarter mile road up to the cabin. Rut roh! I need a tour! Yup, I sure did! After we got to the top, he said I could leave the bike down near the highway and use his jeep to go up and down. I guess a couple of others had done that, but I didn’t really like that idea and I told him I’ll give the road a shot. So what was the road like? Dirt, rocks, lots of thick loose gravel and very steep in places without guard rails. A for sure challenge on a loaded bagger. Well, I made it up sweating bullets. Oh, and if you think going up was bad, going down was a real hoot! After making it up and down a couple of times, I started naming the different sections. Starting at the highway, there was the ‘mine fields’

Lewies In Lead Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 30

Custer Memorial

The Cabin in Lead (pot holes), then came ‘rocky road’ (granite outcropping where the dirt had washed away), after that the ‘rutty road’ (ruts and tire tracks from the rain). Then we have ‘the ramp’ (about a 45 degree climb), followed by ‘dead man’s curve’ (a still rising hard right turn) and then ‘check your shorts’ (a flat section where you can un-pucker). Finally, there was ‘rise one’ (steep climb), a flat, then ‘rise two’ (steep climb with a hard left up to the cabin). Thinking back, maybe I should have used the jeep. I guess I’m stubborn sometimes. Hey, hey, I’m here, let’s head over to Sturgis. First, how about some grub. I got out on Spearfish Canyon and made my way to one of my hangouts, Lewie’s Saloon and Eatery in Lead. After a great bacon cheeseburger and a cold one, I motored into Sturgis, found some rare parking on Main St and hopped off. To be continued... Reno Rockabilly Riot June 26-28 (Reno, Nevada) Paul Sampson started Rockabilly Riot in 2010, his mission was to bring together a more interactive show. The cars are home built. They are not always perfect, they might be rusted or primed. It’s all about friends helping friends sharing their knowledge and bits and pieces and borrowed car parts to keep these classic cars running. Roseville’s Bill Holland was on hand to show off a few of his custom bike builds. Among the bikes was Bill Holland’s Executive Choppers newest build and JW ArchAngels Tattoo custom built bike. Cars, music, pin up girls, street games, vendors and tattoo artist all come together in a three day show to strut their stuff. Photos and article contributed by Taleah Ebey of T3 Design Studios

olsom Harley-Davidson’s parts manager, Joe and I were on a first name basis as he was my go-to guy behind the parts counter helping me with all my questions while I was wrenching on my bike. On one particular day since I had been spending more and more time in the parts department, Joe asked if I’d like to take a look at his newly decked out Fatboy. It just really struck me as a very clean and classy looking ride the minute I laid eyes on his prize of a motorcycle. I learned that Joe had placed his bike in the more than capable hands of the Harley-Davidson of Folsom crew. And having witnessed their work before, I already knew that the workmanship would be top-notch. It just goes to show just how talented and capable the guys in this shop are - so if your bike needs a new look or just some TLC you can count on Harley Davidson of Folsom to make it happen. As most of these projects tend to get started, Joe had a “sudden get-off” and although he was relatively unharmed his bike, unfortunately…was another story. Joe could not be happier with the end results and am sure that it will be the source of many happy miles down the road. Speaking of “down the road”, shortly before we went to print, we learned that Joe and his family were making plans to relocate to Arizona. Joe will be missed, but he is sure to have a bright future wherever he puts his kickstand down. Thanks for sharing your ride.

ost of you out there have had someone pull out in front of you, or even worse - turn in front of you. Most of the time the driver of the cage that tried to kill you will say “I didn’t see the motorcycle”. Well Custom Dynamics (www. CustomDynamics.com) has a series of products to help those cagers see you coming; in fact they have “EVERYTHING To Light Up Your Ride”. I contacted Karen at Custom Dynamics (800-382-1388) and she set me up with a set of LED turn signals that just plug into your bulb socket for easy installation. Just remove the lens, remove stock bulb and plug in the LED. THAT’S IT! It takes seconds to install and what a difference! I went with their Dynamic Ringz in front, which are white running lights that flash in amber when turn signal is activated. Since installing these lights, I’ve noticed people in driveways or at intersections wave at me. To me this means they can SEE me. This required a Load Equalizer to make the lights blink properly and they also sent me a Run, Turn, Brake module for the rear so that the rear is more visible. Both these units were easy to install and fit nicely under the seat. Altogether I really like these lights and you if want people to see you better, I highly recommend getting these lights for your bike. Thanks Custom Dynamics for a great product.

W

ords can be the most powerful force on earth. Words can make you and they can also break you. We can all recall a word or a sentence that lifted us higher than high. We felt exhilarated, loved, worthy, and respected. We got lifted so high, we felt that we could conquer the world. Nothing could stop us from achieving, literally, the impossible. In contrast, we have all experienced harsh words or a never ending sentence that continues to haunt us. No matter the counseling sessions, the prayers given, the tears shed; those haunting words never seem to leave us. The power of words has extreme an effect on our psyche; both good and bad. I have personally seen people get on a downward spiral just from a series of words that they enveloped in their heart. Enveloped so deep that some have turned to the bottle, medication, drugs, and even suicide, looking for a relief or a release from those damaging words. Today I am offering hope and encouragement with 4 easy steps that can be used to encourage others and stop the spiral fall. 1) SPEAK A WORD: Find a friend that is down in the dumps, and come up with a series of words that will encourage them. Tell them they are loved and worthy of friendship. Tell them you care for them and how much they mean to you and your friendship. Encourage them to “Keep on Keepin’ On” and that it will get better. 2) SHARE A WORD: There is nothing that lifts a spirit when we praise others in front of their friends and colleagues. If you are with a bunch of friends and know there is someone that is lost or feeling down, lift their spirits by acknowledging them in front of their peers. You will see an

instant change in the way they feel, a new willingness to move on and smile. 3) WRITE A WORD: There is nothing like receiving a card in the mail. When we are at our lowest moments, sometimes, the written word is the most powerful. The receiving person can keep those words forever and be inspired daily by a few moments it took to write a short note. For .99 cents you can purchase a box of 25 cards and inspire 25 people you may not have realized you could have a positive influence over. I have notes that I have kept for 25 years that continue to inspire me today. 4) PRAY A WORD: Whatever your spiritual fervor is, there is always quiet time involved. The point is to take a quiet moment of solitude, lift their name to the heavens and release it so your words will travel inadvertently and lodge deep into their soul. We cannot comprehend the unfathomable power of the heavens, but I do know that for most of us that have come out of unimaginable circumstances, that someone, somewhere was praying for us. No matter who you are or where you’re from, every one of us goes through it at times. These 4 easy steps can make all the difference in someone standing on the precipice of life, ready to give up. Let us encourage hope and not disaster. 1 Thessalonians 4:18 – “Therefore, encourage one another with these words” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

June 19-20 (Dixon): The Fort Sutter Chapter (amcafortsutter. org) of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s (antiquemotorcycle. org) National Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet held at the Dixon May Fair Grounds was another OUTSTANDING show and swap meet! Shows in years past featured knuckleheads, flatheads, fast iron, etc. and this year’s show featured vintage modified motorcycles. “Vintage Modified???”... but, you say, “some of these look totally stock,” but, I say, “has there been an oil change?... yes?... then it’s modified.” Vendors from far and wide with all the “V.T.” (vintage tin) you could need or want were there with everything from spark plugs to complete bikes (some of

which I wondered why they weren’t lined up with all the bikes there for the show); but, for the deal on that hard to find part you are best advised to be there on Friday - yeah I know, for you poor working slobs, it’s a work day - well... take it off if you want the part. There were A LOT of “show bikes,” something, or as the case may be - some thingS, for everyone, and they all ran and had to be started in the presence of a judge before being entered in the show. The judges were complete and thorough in evaluating each entry. I could go on…but in order to leave more room for photos. Be sure to look for the show again in June of 2016. 11th Annual Jokers Wild Poker Run

uly 18 (Quincy): It was early in the morning, as we were heading out to the beautiful mountain town of Quincy. This time we were not riding our normal Road King as C&E Auburn Indian & V-Twin had asked us to come pick up a new Indian Chieftain for our weekend adventure. Now for us this was a bit of a homecoming because 5 years ago when we started this magazine we were living up near Quincy in Graeagle. Since we are already familiar with the roads in the area, we picked our favorites for this ride to and from the poker run. We pointed the bike north to Hwy 70 and we were already impressed with the Chieftain on the straight roadway and we could feel the 111 cubic inch motor had some power with 119 ft lbs of torque - this bike was smooth and fast. Once we got into the twisties that run along the Feather River was when its true capabilities really excelled. The bike handled like a sport bike into the turns and we could smoothly exhilarate out of each turn. Up the hill from Oroville, we always stop to stretch our legs and give our butts a break at Scooters Café. The owner Dan could not help but admire this sweet ride while we were there, as he made several laps around the bike asking us questions. Fortunately, I had done some home work and was able to answer most of the questions because every were we stopped the bike

seemed to draw a crowd. The poker run starts and ends in Quincy at the EASTSIDE Public House which is owned by our old friends - Dave and Helen Reynolds. This biker friendly bar on Main Street was completely remodeled and we have to say Dave and Helen did an outstanding job, we might not have recognized their place had it not been for the parking lot full of bikes. This is an annual event hosted by the United Bikers of Northern California / Plumas County Bear Country Riders to benefit local Veterans. After being warmly greeted with hugs and handshakes, we headed for to the first stop just down the road to Sierra Cycle – Quincy’s local motorcycle shop. Then it was back through town for a scenic route to Crescent Country Antiques & Gift Shop in Crescent Mills and onward to Stop #4 was in Greenville at the Flying Monkeys Motorcycle shop. It was here that we met up with a few other riders that also included new Thunder Roads NorCal columnist, Joelle “Xmas” Fraser – you may

remember Joelle as the author of HardRider Press. Next stop was Taylorsville to a great little watering hole called Taylorsville Tavern - where once again the Indian Chieftain drew a curious crowd getting a closer look. As we returned back to Quincy to EASTSIDE Pub, the band “Benny, Penny & Dude”were performing on stage in this large backyard style party area located behind the bar where lunch was being served. Raffle tickets numbers were written on a large raffle board for folks to claim their winnings and that they did with several donated raffle prizes were on the table! (We go to several poker runs throughout the year, and we’d like to say that raffles handled in this manner get a TRM NorCal Stamp of Approval!) Thanks to UBNC Plumas County for all of their great hospitality and we look forward to seeing you all again soon! Article and photos by Stan and Terry Hill Editors Note: As we headed home, we opted to make our return trip down Hwy 49 to make a stop at our oldest continuous advertiser in Downieville - St Charles Place. This is another must-stop as it sits right on the river and it’s just a cool old place in a historic old town. The roads in this neck of the woods are quite twisty and have always been one of our favorite ride routes from Gold Lakes to Nevada City. Again, we let the big Indian run - and just like a champ, it was at the top of its game as it handled the tight twisties with the agility is deceptive from its outward appearance as a big touring bike. But don’t take my word for it, we suggest that the next time there is an Indian factory truck near your town that you take advantage of it to see for yourself. This iconic American made bike is the real deal and also gets a TRM NorCal Stamp of Approval!

Bound To Keep On Ridin’

Before

You may recognize Dean Fisher as the guitarist with a big voice for one of the best local Southern Rock bands around Savannah Blue. And if you happen to ride alongside of Dean on his 1998 H-D Fatboy, you can’t help but to notice that this big fella looks slightly uncomfortable and “crunched up” on top of his ride. It was at a recent bike night that a close friend of the band, Gary Cooper casually suggested to Dean that he really should have some ape hangers on his ride. We had him sit on my bike to see if the 16” Binford’s apes that I ride with would be a good fit for him. A few weeks later, I heard that Gary and the guys at V-Dawg Cycles were getting ready to hook Dean up…with a new set of bars. It was to be a surprise as Gary and the crew at V-Dawg Cycles came in on a Sunday (when the shop is normally closed) to get the job done! The guys pulled the surprise off as Dean had no idea that his ride was getting a face lift! We wanted to share this generous gesture simply because this is the kind of good-hearted people that we often find among the biker community. They’re not looking for anything in return but are always willing to jump in and help a brother out however they can. The bike looks great and – Dean, now your bike actually looks like it was custom made for you! Here is to many more happy miles with a bit more style and comfort. Great job to V-Dawg Cycles and Gary Cooper for being a great example of what our biker community is all about!

irst I would like to give respect to all the lady riders who have been riding their own iron horses way before I even thought my day would come. Since high school, I had been enjoying the thrill of riding on the fenders of ole choppers. One day while riding with my late husband, I told him I was ready to learn to ride solo and that was the beginning of my new thrill, on my own bike! After taking a riding class, I purchased my beautiful, new 2000 Heritage Softail Classic. It’s taken me on breathtaking rides through many states and even down to Mexico. Riding inspired me to sew unique leather outfits for myself and my dog riding buddy, “Chico.” My advice is to get the proper training and get the bike that you love and not worry that it’s too big or to clean to be your first. My riding experience has given me great pleasure, many new friendships and hope for many more years of bliss behind the bars. Mount up ladies, for the thrill of your life!

PATRIOTS MC 20th Annual Summer Run Jessica Keg Toss 13ft 10in

August 8 (Prunedale): When it comes to looking out for and showing appreciation to our veterans, I can think of no greater example than from the Patriots MC and friends in Prunedale. We were looking forward to making the ride to the central coast knowing that we were going to be hanging with a great bunch of bikers and Mom and Pops Saloon contributing to a very worthy cause at the same time. For those of you that are not from this neck of the woods, the Patriots MC host a few events every year and distribute the proceeds directly to gifts which are delivered to veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto during Thanksgiving. The club does what it takes to provide the gifts from a “wish list” that the veterans provide. These gifts are either things they really need or comfort items just to improve their quality of life a bit during their stay in the hospital. Also because it is Thanksgiving, the Patriots MC cook up a great feast for the vets and then wheel them out in their wheelchairs or hospital beds into the parking lot so they can see the motorcycles and be the judges for a bike show. This is something extra special to these veterans that have served our country with honor. It is indeed extra special, especially since some no longer have a family or a support system

outside of the hospital. So you can only imagine the joy that this must bring to them to feel the love and appreciation from an appreciative community. We had some great stop locations on the schedule like the Whole Enchilada in Moss Landing where we met up with some new friends - Monty and Joyce. Since they are locals to the area, they were nice enough to let us tag along as they took us through some of the most scenic agricultural backroads to the next stop at Tres Pinos’ 19th Hole. It truly is amazing to see the variety of fruits and vegetables that come from this region of California. Next it was off to see long time friends and Thunder Roads NorCal supporter at Mom & Pops Saloon where the owner, Rhonda was there to greet us with her warm smile and big hugs. Put Mom & Pops Saloon in San Juan Bautista on your “to do” ride list as this quaint essential biker bar is situated in a really cool old mission town that has lots of things to see and do and a rich history to learn about. Next it was back to the start point at the American Legion Post #593 where the Patriots MC and their support crew had a delicious BBQ chicken dinner waiting for us. Rumor has it that a couple hundred birds made the ultimate sacrifice for our feast. Later, it was out to the horse shoe pits a different kind of fun, this time it was a beer keg toss instead of the usual horse shoes. The rules were that you donated 5 bucks, take a shot of tequila then give that keg a big heave ho. Jessica won with a keg toss of 13’10” for the women. And an impressive keg toss for the men was Harrison from Salinas at 27’5’’ getting a hundred bucks for their efforts! We have to give at shout out to the 2nd place winner - Darryl (25’6”) for making it an epic battle as the two brothers from One Brotherhood MC went back and forth several times; of course dropping five dollar bills for each keg toss each time for a good competitive cause. (Check out the video on the Thunder Roads Northern California YOU TUBE page). And be sure to stay tuned to Thunder Roads NorCal for future Patriots MC upcoming rides. Editors Note: Our ride today was on a 2015 Indian Roadmaster provided by C&E Auburn Indian & V-Twin - it was an absolute thrill to ride on one of our typical one day event rides (400miles/ plus) much like this one. A grand total of around eight hours of saddle time and coming from a passenger’s perspective (being Terry) she said “no butt break” was necessary as it is THAT comfortable. Thanks again to Carlo & Emma Lujan for letting us give this top tier touring bike a full test ride experience. It was a spectacular riding machine.

On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to playt ogether. One day the two were playing, when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help! Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life. Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive on the shiny Harley, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him. After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful bike, rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals....For Life! A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his hangy-down thang and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? (yep, you betcha, there IS a moral!) “When You’re Hung Like A Horse, You Don’t Need A Harley To Pick Up Chicks.”

A redneck was stopped by a game warden in middle Tennessee recently with two ice chests full of fish. He was leaving a secluded lake well known for its fishing. The Game Warden asked the man, ‘Do you have a license to catch those fish?’ ‘Naw, sir’, replied the redneck. ‘I ain’t got none of them there licenses. You gotta’ understand, these here are my pet fish.’ ‘Pet fish?’ ‘Yeah. Every night, I take these here fish down to the lake and let ‘em swim ‘round for a while. Then, when I whistle, they jump right back into these here ice chests and I take ‘em on home.’ ‘That’s a bunch of b.s.! Fish can’t do that.’ The redneck looked at the warden for a moment and then said, ‘It’s the truth Mr. Government Man. I’ll show ya, it truly works.’ ‘O.K.’, said the warden. This I’ve got to see!’ The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the warden says, ‘Well?’ ‘Well, what?,’ says the redneck. The warden says, ‘When are you going to whistle them back?’ ‘Whistle who back?’ ‘The FISH,’! yelled the warden! ‘What fish?,’ replied the redneck, “I thought we were just beholdin’ the beauty of the lake.”

A biker who has been out on the road for three weeks stops into a brothel outside Vegas. He walks straight up to the Madam, drops down $500 and says, “I want your ugliest woman you got in here and a bologna sandwich!!” The Madam is astonished. “But sir, for that kind of money you could have one of the finest ladies here and a three-course meal.” Biker replies, “Listen sweetheart, I ain’t horny, I’m HOMESICK.”

A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without missing a beat....she said, “Sir, I need to see your ticket, not your stub.”

I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a Cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same damn snake with two frogs in his mouth!

One day Z-Man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in a very sexy nightie. “Tie me up,” she purred, “and you can do anything you want.” So, he tied her up and went for a long ride on his Harley.
