ERRY CHRISTMAS to all of our friends, loyal readers and supporters of Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. Hopefully you have all been able to get to a couple toy runs this year and spread some holiday cheer to people in our community that are not as fortunate. And we also hope that at this time of the year you are able to look back on 2016 as a good and productive year. We always try hard to look for the good in all situations but there are those times that life will challenge the most positive minded of us and knock us down for awhile. Our biker community has lost way too many folks that were close to us this year. It is with a heavy heart that we remember our fellow riders with our annual LAST RIDES collage. This time of year can be extremely difficult for those that have recently lost someone close. If you know of an individual or family that is suffering right now, please reach out a kind hand of friendship and let them know that you care. As this year comes to an end, we are looking foward to 2017. We are excited about the challenges and new experiences that are in-store for us as we bring you this magazine each month. As we grow, we are looking ahead to try to make improvements not only every year but from one month to the next. In our travels, we listen to all of your suggestions and will be trying to implement some of them in 2017. We always take stock and reflect of how the past year has gone in December simply because it’s tough to know where we need to go - if we don’t understand where we have been. Having said that we don’t want to spend too much time on that because we are really looking forward to getting to spend some quality time with our family and we sincerely hope that you do too. 3rd Annual Moto Envy Show S
eptember 10 (Eureka): It was a foggy morning on September 10, 2016, and it was time for the 3rd Annual Moto Envy Show. The event was hosted by Jeff and Cassandra Hesseltine, owners of the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe at 5th and F streets in Eureka. As in the past years, the show was a benefit for CASA Humboldt (www.humboldtcasa.org) which is a child advocate organization in Humboldt County. I was asked to be an awards judge this year and I was certainly in good company. The other judges included: Dave Hayes of Bell Helmets; Craig Marlieu, the owner of Kick Start Garage in Redding.; Shasta Smith of Vintage Monkey in Sacramento and Will Guyan, editor in chief of “On the Level” , a magazine for BMW riders. This year’s raffle prize, built for “The Phoenix Project”, was a beautifully restored Yamaha XS-650 street tracker. It was rebuilt with collaboration from local mechanics, riders, and customers of the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe. Congratulations to Mark Mullins of Southern Humboldt who won the XS-650 raffle prize. The city block alongside the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe was blocked off to accommodate the event. The fog magically lifted and the sun came out as Moto Envy began to come together with many extraordinary entries arriving quickly. Some of the first bikes I noticed were a pair of racing bikes owned by the actor Brad Pitt. One of these was a KTM road racer built by Jesse Rooke. The other was a vintage style Bonneville racer built by Shinya Kimura who is a custom builder and rider in the Cannonball Run. Brad Pitt had previously visited the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe and had noticed a picture of his Triumph motorcycle on the wall. It was then that he told cafe owner Jeff Hesseltine that he would like to show his motorcycles in the Moto Envy event. The renowned builder, Roland Sands also sent another Bonneville style Victory racer to the event. Other builders showing their bikes were Jim Larsen of Mother Lode Cycles and Greg Pfau of Humboldt Performance Cycles to name only a few of the builders showing their craftsmanship. As the amount of entries quickly grew, I remembered what one of last year’s judges told me, that judging this event was not going to be an easy task. There were 8 different classes of motorcycles to be judged: 1. Vintage racers; 2.Daily Drives; 3. Custom; 4. Cafe; 5.Sport
racer; 6. Vintage; 7. Mini Moto; 8. Rat bike. A vintage bevel drive Ducati Sebring, owned by Steven Brisken, immediately caught my eye. Besides being my overall favorite, it became the “Overall Winner” of the entire event. There were a great many Harley’s entered and my favorite was a vintage Harley that had been used in Guatemala as a police or army motorcycle. It had a great vintage look to it as well as the license plate to prove it! Another class winner! Another interesting racing bike was a Suzuki 1100 that had once gone 187 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The owner, Steve Burns, was glad to share with me his experience of a 185 mph crash at Bonneville. I was amazed that he was able to survive such an event and be intact. A friend that I met last year, Dennis McFarland, brought an interesting 1967 Harley Sportster powered by a BSA engine. This bike was built in Ukiah as a MIA Tribute bike by Ken Maddox and Greg iles. Dennis also won the sport racer class with a XR1200 Harley racer. A young lady who caught my eye in the daily rider class was Carmen Arguello. She rode and entered her Honda CB900. What made it unusual was that her little dog, named “Hot Diggety Dog”, rode as far as Denver, CO. and back in a back pack on her gas tank! They were so adorable and heartwarming. A riding buddy, Matt Garrett won the slow race which concluded right before the trophy presentation. The trophies were created by the Fire and Light Originals in Arcata. The actual trophies were pint beer glasses engraved with the Moto Envy logo. They were called the “Endless Pint” which meant that the winners were entitled to refill their glass for a year at the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe. What a great extra bonus! Moto Envy 2016 was a great show and I felt that there was definitely something there for everyone to enjoy. I certainly look forward to attending next year’s event in September 2017. Over 12,000 dollars was raised by the Moto Envy event for CASA Humboldt. Thanks go out to all the builders, riders, participants, judges and volunteers for making this event such a great success. ost of us out here on the left coast can ride all year, but if you’re in the higher altitudes or live in some of the other colder regions you may end up parking your scoot through a good part of the winter. If this is the case, you’ll want to take care of a few maintenance items to ensure it’s ready to go when spring hits.
ü Give it a good bath! Road grime and bugs left on paint finishes for prolonged periods can monkey things up. ü Don’t store the bike near ozone emitting devices like electric motors, freezers, furnaces, etc. The gasses created by these can deteriorate rubber parts. ü Changing fluids is important as well. The transmission and primary are not so critical if the mileage on the last change is low, but engine oil is a must. By-products of combustion and condensation can wreak havoc on the inside of your engine. ü Check tire pressures. Keep them inflated properly while the bike is stored.
ü The first item on the list is your battery. Batteries have a static discharge that will, over time, pull it down to just below useless. Motorcycle batteries are much more susceptible to this than their automotive counterparts. Battery tenders resolve this issue by providing a regulated charge that will bring the battery to a full state of charge and then reduce the output to maintain the battery without overcharging. If you don’t own a battery tender, GET ONE! Photo1 They are reasonably priced, easy to use, and it’s not uncommon to get 5 years of service or more from a good, maintenance free battery. Most tenders come with a pigtail that can be installed on the battery, making the connection a breeze. There are many products out there and the nomenclature can vary such as battery tender, trickle charger, and maintenance charger to name a few. Make sure the device you use states clearly in the product literature that it contains a mechanism (circuitry in the power adapter) that prevents overcharging. There are trickle chargers and low power chargers that do not switch over and can cook your battery.
ü Last, and definitely not least, is the fuel. Fuel stabilizer is a wonderful thing. Photo2 Gas sitting stagnant for prolonged periods does nasty things to fuel delivery systems, and doesn’t burn worth a damn either! Add a shot of stabilizer (quantity varies by manufacturer, read the directions) and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute. You can also drain the fuel, but the former option keeps you ready for that occasional warm day that just begs for a ride. If your bike is carbureted, shut off the fuel valve and run the bike until it stalls which will empty the float bowl. That’s it for this month. Ride safe and good wrenching. he sun was shining again (after a week of rain and bad weather) so it was time to unhook the tender and go for a little putt. We left the North Beach area and got going on US 101 heading to the Golden Gate. Before crossing the bridge, we decided to get some coffee and cappuccino, so we got off at the viewpoint ramp and headed down to the Warming Hut by Torpedo Wharf for some great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. On our way, again, we crossed the GG Bridge and headed north to San Rafael, exiting at Grand Avenue and turning right on 2nd. This eventually turns into San Pedro Rd. As you approach China Camp State Park, the terrain becomes woodsy and the San Pablo Bay appears. After entering the park, you come to the turn-off for the old shrimping village which may well have been the “Chinese Bubba Gump” in its day. You can check out the old buildings and the tools and nets that were used back then to process the shrimp. A small museum (www. friendsofchinacamp.org) is also there with an old sampan and other artifacts used by the fishermen. We went up to the campground where there are tables that will sit a large group and are located in a beautiful setting. If you like hiking, bike riding or camping there are plenty of opportunities throughout the park. As we were starting to pack up, we heard the sound of foghorns and sure enough a mostly sunny morning disappeared into a huge fog bank. Back on San Pedro Rd, we continued west and left the fog behind. It’s a nice ride with some twisties through the trees and then it opens up into Miwok Meadows where the terrain is a combination of marshes and rolling hills as it runs along the bay. The road took us back to US 101 again, so we hopped on and headed North to Lucas Valley Rd. There we turned west and soon found ourselves in a forest area enjoying the nice scenery around every turn. We climbed a bit through the rolling hills and woods until we came to Nicasio Valley Rd. where

we headed north towards the reservoir. After reaching the reservoir, we turned left on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. At Point Reyes Station, we topped of the tank, rode through town and picked up Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Turning west we followed the road up through Inverness, a nice little cruise along Tamales Bay. In Inverness, we were surprised to see a Czech Restaurant (Cindy’s father is Czech.) You don’t find many of these on your travels. After leaving town, we continued west on Sir Francis Drake, the terrain is very hilly, green and open. Kind of reminds me of the geography you might see in Ireland or Scotland; scattered farm houses here and there, lots of cattle grazing in the fields. You can pick up the Pacific Coast or the inlets of Drake’s Bay from time to time. Hunger was on us as

Nap Time we came to the Drake’s Beach Road turnoff. Good timing. We had a good lunch at Drake’s Beach Café. On the menu, Niman’s burgers, dogs, clam chowder and fish and chips. Not bad at all. Afterward we visited the small museum. I now know why they use the term “knots” to designate ship speed. Learn something new every day, right? The park ranger told us that there were elephant seals further up the peninsula. So, we headed back up Drake’s Beach Road and turned left at Sir Francis Drake. We came to a “Y” and veered left. At the parking area, we hopped off and made the short hike to the overlook. The Ranger said the young males usually wrestle and fight this time of year, getting ready for the future when they will challenge the older bulls for the “attention of the ladies.” But for now, he said, the bulls will return in a few weeks’ time and throw the younger ones off the beach while they mate. Ah, what a thing, nature. We were not so lucky this day. All the seals were napping on the beach. No UFC today. Since the Point Reyes Lighthouse (www.ptreyes.org) was a short distance away, we putted back to the turn-off and went west to the Point. We found out it was a half-mile hike to the lighthouse overlook. We called this our workout for the day and it was worth it. The views up and down the coast were awesome. It was now time to head back and we retraced our ride back towards Point Reyes Station, but instead of going left at Highway 1 we turned right towards San Francisco. Highway 1 was a fine
View North Near Lighthouse adventure. Love the eucalyptus forest before you get to Stinson Beach and climb the cliffs along the coast, the view…. WOW! Got behind a bus coming down the twisties, but the driver was a good chap and pulled over…you can only take so much diesel exhaust. In a short time, we were back on US 101 heading towards the Golden Gate and North Beach. As we crossed the bridge, the sun was low and if you looked west, you could see the sun reflecting off the water. To the east, the buildings in the city highlighted by the sun – all white – looking as if it belonged in the Mediterranean. Coming into the city across the Bay Bridge at night and coming in across the Golden Gate Bridge near sunset is just plain impressive! Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth

T
he 1980’s brought many changes to American pop culture. The birth of Pac-Man and Microsoft Windows paved the way for technology to supersede human interaction, and the assassination of John Lennon ushered in the downfall of music as we knew it. By the end of the decade we saw the Berlin Wall fall and inflation rise to record levels. What impact did this have on the motorcycle world? Well let’s just say that Japan was doing far more than selling the first compact disc players the world had ever seen. Japanese bikes were quickly becoming hotter than an 80’s teen girl wearing Love’s Baby Soft. Though motorcycling had been popular for years, it became more accessible to some riders due in part to the many low-priced and easy to ride Japanese models on the market. To capitalize on the growing market the Japanese began to leave behind the designs that had originally helped them explode onto the motorcycle scene in America. Some developments that emerged earlier in motorcycle history quickly became standards in the 80’s…water cooling, shaft drives as opposed to chains, and virtually any modification that could boost performance and speed. An interesting aspect of many 80’s bikes was the plethora of modern high-technology additions including electronic instruments with basic computers and LCD displays, 6 speed transmissions, and triple disk brakes. Some noteworthy Japanese bikes of the 80’s include the Honda V45 and V65 Magna. Introduced in 1982, it was one of the original 80’s cruisers with a 750. In 1983, the V65 was released as an 1100. Many saw this as Honda challenging Harley-Davidson by indicating engine size in cubic inches (Harley’s standard measurement) versus cc’s. The Magna would evolve through the decade into the Super Magna, but would never gain as much respect on the American market
as the Honda Shadow. American buyers preferred the more “Harley-esque” appearance and performance provided by the Shadow. Prior to the split between performance bikes and cruisers became as prominent as we see today, Kawasaki decided to take the engine from their legendary “Ninja” and equip a low slung cruiser frame with it. What they produced was the Eliminator…a 900 cc (later a 1000 cc) water cooled inline-four with a 6 speed transmission that produced over 100 HP in a sleeker and lighter model than Honda’s Magna. Suzuki produced the Madura 700 and 1200, and the models certainly combined power and style. Another example of an 80’s v-4 cruiser, but was quickly abandoned by Suzuki after only two years of production…a fact that makes them somewhat of a rarity, though the body styling appears quite dated to most. Probably the best thing to come out of Suzuki in the 80’s was the Katana. The Katana integrated style and function and added modern aerodynamics without simply covering the bike in cheap plastic panels. Its release did however lead in part to the start of “plastic” motorcycles, when other manufacturers began following the futuristic design of the Katana. Yamaha made its own contributions to the technological advancement of motorcycles in the 80’s. The FZR 400RR SP burst on to the scene as one of the first aluminum beam frames and housed a 399 cc inline-four. The SP enhanced that simple rightness with a tapered aluminum swingarm, a single seat, and a faired-in headlight. But perhaps Yamaha’s greatest accomplishment of the 80’s was the V-Max. The V-Max is the only “80’s bike” that remains in production today. And interestingly, they hold their resale value better than any other Japanese model…similar to the value retention of a Harley.

Speaking of Harley-Davidson….what were they up to during the decade of Space Invaders and now iconic “Brat Pack” movies? In 1980 Harley is still owned by AMF, but they released a historical bike anyway…the FXB Sturgis model in honor of the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Sturgis model was equipped with a belt drive, black chrome appointments, and an 80 cubic inch engine. 1981 rolled around and a letter of intent was signed by thirteen H-D executives to buy back Harley-Davidson Motor Company from AMF. The year carried on, and then June 15th happened….it wasn’t just the day my baby brother entered the world and removed me from my youngest child throne…HarleyDavidson was officially no longer owned by AMF. Harley was back, and with a new commitment to quality, they would cruise through the remainder of the decade releasing the FXR/FXRS Super Glide II with its rubberisolated, five speed powertrain and the welded and stamped frame for the new Sportster models. In 1983 Harley responds to the stockpiling of Japanese motorcycle inventory in the United States by petitioning the International Trade Commission for tariff relief…and it is granted. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the 80’s for Harley was the release of the 1340 cc Evolution engine on five models, including the all-new Softail in 1985. The Evolution motor was the result of seven
years of development, and designed to produce more power at every speed, run cooler and cleaner, and was oil tight. The end of the decade showed that HarleyDavidson was again on top of its game when the company requested the International Trade Commission terminate their earlier granted tariff. A monumental move in American business history that demonstrated confidence in Harley’s ability to compete in the marketplace. They then released the Heritage Softail model, began using the Evolution motor in Sportster models, and bought the Holiday Rambler Corporation. The 80’s was rounded out with the return of the springer front end on the FXSTS Springer Softail and the introduction of the Sportster 1200 to mark the 85th Anniversary of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The 80’s was a turbulent decade for many, but the motorcycle industry continued to forge ahead as always. The 1990’s was no exception. After perfecting the basics in the two-wheel industry there is only one thing left to do…and that’s improve. HEROES BBQ & DEMO DAY November 5-6 (Hollister): Both Victory and Indian demo trucks were at Hollister Powersports with their fleet of demo bikes for curious folks to see for themselves just how nice these bikes ride. The bikes were turning and burning in and out of the parking lot all day long. The dealership had a BBQ fired up to keep everybody well fed with free tri tip sandwiches or hotdogs - plus the first 100 demo riders received a free t-shirt. Where else can you ride a bunch of different motorcycles, get fed and get a free t- shirt too? WoW! This is just how they roll at Hollister Powersports! If you missed this event, swing on by any way to feast your eyes on a showroom full of their custom painted motorcycles that are painted right there in Hollister.

Lane Splitter Harley-Davidson CLAMBAKE October 15 (San Jose): The Clambake at Lane Splitters H-D was awesome! I have been going to Lane Splitters ever since they took over San Jose Harley. One thing I have found out about them is you never know what’s going to happen at one of their events. For example, the Clambake, ok they are having a clambake. Pretty cut and dry, right? No way, that’s not how they roll! Ya, they did have a clam bake plus everything to go with it including free beer! It was also a send off party for the General Manager, Scott. Scott was transferring to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I’m really going to miss Scott - he is ‘good people’. But there’s more…it is also a party for Theresa who was promoted to General Manager of Lane Splitter. Theresa has earned this promotion she has worked her way up to where she is now. She is a hard worker and tough too! Don’t let that pretty face fool ya. I hope Scott doesn’t try and talk her into going to Florida I can’t handle that – I have abandonment issues. Oh, ya, this was Theresa’s birthday party too! That’s why there was cake everywhere. You would think this is a lot of stuff happening for one event but there is still more. They had a customization seminar for the new and older bikes. Rumor has it you can’t do anything to the new bikes, BS! They have all kinds of things you can do Theresa to your new bike to personalize serving beer it, even for the 2017. It blew me away; I almost believed all that BS! But go check it out for yourself. ast year as I was getting photos of the throngs of bikers riding through Nevada City for the Nevada County Toy Run, I first laid eyes on this incredible custom H-D Servi-Car. It was here that I met Dave the owner and designer / builder of this sweet ride. Dave right away started to fill me in on all the details of the build and the history of this bike that was once an Oakland PD bike. Over the course of this past year, TRM NorCal kept running into Dave at various bike shows and he was taking many awards for this one. It was at the Denver Choppers Bike Show during the Hollister Rally last July that we finally started to get a plan together to do a photo shoot. Stay tuned - it turns out that Dave loves his bikes and has a few others that we will be sharing with you in the near future. I could go on and on about this, but let’s just get straight to it and let Dave tell you how this trike came to be what it is now. Article by Stan Hill. 20 Annual Black Widows Poker Run th
October 1 (Sacramento): The 20th Annual Black Widows Poker Run, presented by the Black Widows, Inc., couldn’t have happened on a more pleasant day. This particular run benefits the Shriners Hospitals for Children of Northern California (www.shrinerschildrens.org) which specializes in care and rehabilitation to children with congenital conditions and complex medical needs regardless of whether or not their family can pay for it. This ride has a special place in the hearts of my riding companions, Bobby and Alycia, as they spent many hours with their daughters at the Shriners Hospital years ago. (And yes, the outcome was good for the entire family.) The fun began at the VFW Post 67 on Stockton Boulevard where we were greeted by Jamey – President of Black Widows, Inc. in the parking lot who gave us instructions and where to go next. We were then greeted by Jacob and Karen at the door. Registration packets and T-shirts in hand and a full belly from the kitchen, we drew our first poker card. I won’t soon forget the couple off to the side of the room gleaming with smiles and taking pictures of their first poker run T-shirt and map, David and Ruthy. This was gonna be fun! The next

stop was at the Shriners Hospital where we turned the wheel for our second Poker card. I just knew I was working on my Royal Flush. Yes, I felt it in my bones…..Anyway, we were greeted by Melissa Wood, Director of Development and Joseph Ramos, Event Coordinator at the hospital. After getting hugs from everyone there, we were off to Freeport Bar & Grill to draw our third Poker card. After a brief stop in Freeport for our next draw and a stretch, we were once again cruising down the winding roads of the Delta (which included a comical encounter with a herd of loud-pipe hating goats on the side of the road). We then found our way to our next poker draw at Tony’s Place in Walnut Grove. Patty, bar tender extraordinaire of 30 years, greeted the masses with a welcoming smile. Card number 4 was drawn, bladders were emptied and then we were off again. As we left Tony’s Place, our group got a little larger as Terry and Stephanie and Bob joined up with us as we made our way to the first of two ferries (did anyone else smell the black licorice after the first ferry?) Ferry ride done, we started up and roared into the town of Rio Vista to our last card draw at Foster’s Bighorn. On a side note, sometime during the ride, my Fitbit buzzed telling me I had reached my required steps for the day. So, when we arrived in Isleton at Peter’s Steakhouse, I had walked 23,569 steps and climbed 208 floors. Therefore, I felt that I had earned the right to sit and enjoy the rare piece of prime rib which awaited me. Our wonderful server, Ying, made sure our glasses and our stomachs were full so that the hike up the steps to the second floor raffle was just that... a hike. Alycia, unbeknownst to her, had a surprise in store for her at the top of the stairs, a winning poker hand, $200, and a stun gun. That, of course, was a great way to end a very special ride. A big thank you to Amber and Jamey and their crew for all the hard work it took to make this ride a success.

5 Annual The Race th
October 15-16 (Pismo Beach): The inaugural West Coast version of the 5th annual The Race of Gentleman “TROG” (www.theraceofgentlemen.com) was held in Pismo Beach, California. Not even the forces of Mother Nature herself could conspire to stop this historical race from happening. Sponsored by the Oilers MC/CC, this event pays homage to the American automotive and motorcycle heritage that generations long before have built, of which has been revived to celebrate today. If you have no idea what this event is supposed to be, just picture MC and rod racers of yesteryear from the early 1900’s through the fabulous 40’s streaking down an 1/8 mile beach in excess of 35 mph in a race purportedly invented on the shores of Florida in the early teens that migrated to the West Coast
at Pismo Beach in the early 20’s. TROG features nonstop head to head beach racing complete with checkered start and finish pylons, as well as, replete with flag gals gymnastically signaling the start of each and every race. TROG succeeds in all facets in pulling off this replicated race that would make our mechanical forefathers proud. The organizers of TROG go to painstaking details of making this event authentic by limiting racing participants to only motorcycles and hotrods that pass rigid inspections to meet the “look” of the period racing. Organizers surrounded the sandy dragstrip with period signage, vendor tents, wooden race towers and then sprinkled in a couple carnival rides to magically replicate this golden age of amateur racing. When you entered the gates of TROG, the feeling was

of Gentlemen 2016 that you had entered a time machine and are now either a willing participant racer or a fanatic race spectator of the whole celebration. Emphasis is placed on fanatic because most people would have bailed at the weather conditions on Saturday’s race day. The forces of nature threw several curve balls at the organizers on race day by deluging the track with constant rain and covering the strip with an unusually high surf (brought even further ashore by a full moon) that delayed the festivities for hours while all waited as the course was re-prepped for the action to begin. Despite these unanticipated distractions, the races commenced a few hours late to the delight of the over 2000 spectators who flocked to Pismo. If you watched the recent Harley and the Davidsons TV
series, this was the feel the TROG event emulated-that of authentic nostalgia from a by-gone era. Just plain old style racing pitting authentic period American motorcycles, sometimes 4 abreast as well as hot rodders dashing to the far finish pylons. The lineup of motorcycles included Harleys, Indians and even a Henderson Excelsior’s thrown in for good measure. No Merkels though! Many racers were clothed in correct period attire which heightened the spectacle of the contests. A few notable motorcyclists participated in the races including custom motorcycle builder Shinya Kimura on a 1915 Indian, Former Orange County Chopper mechanic Rick Petko on a 39 WLLD and Bay Area notable Steve Caballero (dubbed the Skater of the Century by Thrasher Magazine in 1999) perched on a 40’s continued...

Harley flathead. Also part of races and on display were pre-1916 motorcycles and their riders who participated in the 2016 Cannonball race, a competition that covered 3400 miles from the shores of Atlantic City, New Jersey to the coast of San Diego, California. Racers at this 2016 TROG trekked from such far away locales as New Jersey, Detroit, Oklahoma and Nevada to be a part of this prestigious competition. One unlucky fellow known in the antique motorcycle circles as Randy AKA Detroit, brought his 1926 Harley over 2400 miles only to take a spill in the sand dune staging area prior to the start line, ending his hopes of dashing down the beach. But still was all smiles as he recanted the moment, thanks to the age of instant video, proudly replaying the tumble in the sand to all who cared to relive the moment with him. The idea of TROG pitting these racers against one another to vie at being called the champion in their class was a motivating factor, but it became clear wasn’t the main goalcomradery and bragging rights seemed to prevail. The notion of being the champion in any class was doused by the weather as the bracket races scheduled for Sunday were cancelled due to more abnormal storm high tides covering the track once again. Since news broke of races cancelled for Sunday, TROG devotees would not be deterred, as an impromptu car and MC show broke out at the neighboring campgrounds. On showcase were many of the rods and MC’s who participated in TROG, including many meticulously restored campers and
period vehicle haulers from the 30’s & 40’s. Regardless of the brevity of the races, those who participated didn’t seem to mind. Flat Head Jedd of the Moonshiners 13 MC, riding a blue and gold striped 47 HD Panhead remarked that if asked what he did TROG weekend- he would casually reply “Oh didn’t do much except ride a 69 year old motorcycle down Pismo Beach in a drag race.” Just reliving an opportunity to do what their octane fueled predecessors did from generations ago was enough for these racers to consider participating a success. Watch your calendar for next year’s event as it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in the moment, but feel like it’s 80 years ago all over again. 16 Annual Las Vegas Bike Fest th
September 29 to October 2 (Las Vegas, NV) The 16th Annual Las Vegas Bike Fest has returned home to downtown Fremont Street - where it all began. The event started on Fremont Street in 2001 but was relocated to Cashman Center for 12 years. Bringing it back to Fremont Street puts attendees in the middle of party central in downtown Vegas. Dedicated bike parking was available at the event for daily riders. For those that were staying at the Golden Nugget host casino or other nearby establishment, you could park your ride in their garage and partake in the craziness of Fremont Street as you make your way to the rally. Be forewarned that what should only be a ten minute walk can take much longer if you are easily sidetracked. A quick stop at Hogs and Heifers for a brew, selfies with some feathered CAN CAN dancers, celebrity impersonators or maybe that pair of Nuns showing their exposed pair of v-twins… and you could end up late for a scheduled bike event that was important to you. This event has everything you would expect at a quality rally including multiple custom bike show competitions, bikini contests, biker games, pokers runs and walks, live music, killer stunt shows performed by the Straight UP Stunt Team and John Stotts Globe of Death. A fleet of Indian and Victory bikes were available for demo rides. There was a good variety of vendors selling parts, accessories and services that went well beyond the standard leather gear and t-shirt booths that can sometimes over saturate an event. The Chop-in Block Road Show was also on hand providing interactive welding and metal shaping demonstrations and seminars from a variety of custom bike builders. There were 4 motorcycle giveaways with one lucky registered
guest winning a bike on each night of the rally. Additionally, Rick Harrison of the History Channels “Pawn Stars” was on hand and raffled off a bike that was awarded at the 3rd Annual Pawn Stars Poker run, with proceeds benefitting the Epilepsy Foundation of Nevada. Las Vegas Bike Fest draws some of the best custom motorcycle builders in the nation. The bike shows featured world class entries in each bike class or judging category which are too numerous to list. Each day featured a different ride in bike show with the prestigious invite only “Artistry in Iron” master builders competition as the main event. Some of the noteworthy 1st place winners of the daily shows include Chris Madsen winner of the Baddest Bagger Las Vegas competition and Jon MacDowell for his radical entry

in the Custom Bike Show. Jon will be a master builder invitee to the 2017 Artistry In Iron competition. The Artistry in Iron Master Builders Championship invites builders from around the world who are establishing trends for engineering custom motorcycles. There are no rules or guidelines on the builds which provides for an impressive array of creative designs. The bikes are judged solely by the master builders themselves. This year’s 2nd place winner was Mark Shell of Bonneville Customs. Mark won a Paughco custom rigid rolling chassis for his entry. Pete Pearson of Rocket Bobs Cycle Works in the United Kingdom won the Artistry in Iron Championship and the $10k prize. Pearson’s Triumph based build was certainly one of the most radical design and fabrications of the event. Just after the master builders awards ceremony it was time to make to the main stage for the inaugural Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame presentation. Branscombe Richmond and the Renegades and Roadies Rock Tour were rocking the place as the crowd swelled. The 2016 Hall of Fame inductees were Evel Knievel, Lorenzo Lamas, Robbie Knievel and Keith Ball. All the inductees have ties to Las Vegas. Who can forget Evel Knievel’s infamous unsuccessful attempt to jump the fountains at Caesars Palace on New Years Eve in 1967? Despite his injuries he went on to be one of the most famous dare devil jumpers of all time; Lorenzo Lamas is best known for his steamy roles in soap operas and the crime drama Renegade. He is also founder of Lorenzo Cycles and was praised for his many philanthropic endeavors and promoting the expressions
freedoms and lifestyle. The 58 year old Lamas could not resist demonstrating his physical abilities by doing 30 rapid pushups much to the delight of the ladies in the crowd; Robbie Knievel is the holder of 20 world record jumps. Robbie spoke at length of his many successes and favorite jumps including his jump of the fountains at Caesars Palace. Captain Robbie’s latest back surgery had him sporting a back brace and cane yet he vowed to keep on riding and in fact invited the crowd to a 90 mile ride and party with him following morning; Keith Ball has dedicated his life and career in support of the motorcycle lifestyle and freedoms. Keith was Editor of Easy Rider Magazine in its early years and played an important role in the biker culture and the art of custom bike building. Keith and Easy Rider founder Lou Kimzey also gave bikers a voice as the founders of A.B.A.T.E. which originally stood for “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments”. Keith’s message to the crowd was to keep up the fight for our freedoms. We owe Keith a debt of gratitude for his ongoing efforts. The 2017 Las Vegas Bike Fest planning is already underway and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Sin City offers many activities and is a perfect location for a motorcycle rally and the enjoyment of the biker lifestyle. As they say….What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas. Buried Bones Tombstone Tour 4 Poker Run
October 23 (Folsom): The day could not have been more spectacular as riders gathered to register for the 4th Annual Buried Bones Tombstone Tour in the parking lot at Dolan’s Bar. Dolan’s Bar is a new sports bar on Blue Ravine Road in Folsom which offers a wide selection of beer and any other beverage of your choice along with attentive bartenders and an ideal atmosphere to catch your favorite sporting event. On this Sunday morning, the Dolan brothers rolled out the red carpet with a breakfast burrito buffet, coffee and drink specials for the nearly 200 registered bikers that showed up to get their ride underway. This ride has evolved into a fall tradition just before Halloween as riders follow a map to various poker stops that are located at a historic pioneer cemetery by way of some of the most scenic backcountry that you can find in this part of the state. Not only do you get to draw a card in hopes of a winning hand, it is a great way to learn a little bit about California history and also a portion of the proceeds will benefit these historic cemeteries. This year, the ride took us to Shenandoah Valley Cemetery in Amador County, Oak Hill Cemetery and Jayhawk Cemetery in El Dorado County with the poker run ending at the El Dorado Saloon and Grill in El Dorado Hills. The new ownership has opened their arms to those of us that prefer 2 wheels. Once at El Dorado Saloon, the riders were greeted by a well prepared staff, Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 48
quick service and a delicious tri tip lunch. Bob - the event promoter from 41Live had a mountain of very cool raffle prizes that had been donated by local businesses. Vendors like Biker Wear, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys and New Earth Creations Jewelry were onsite for those doing some early holiday shopping. had moved. I was single. I always had a fascination with motorcycles and wanted one…so, I bought one. I trailered it home. I read about it along with obtaining my motorcycle operators permit and decided to start it up. That was 10 years ago. I taught myself in my driveway and then down the street. Trial and error was my method. I wanted to ride with others so, I started my online research regarding motorcycle clubs and women. I was seeking a cohesive, serious women’s motorcycle club. The one that resonated with me was called Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club. I was assigned a sponsor and I hung around for a couple years and was eventually accepted as a prospect. I was so overwhelmed by the kindness and acceptance as well as the seriousness that resonated from the top regarding women on motorcycles and our place, as women, in a male dominated, and controlled, three-piece motorcycle subculture. I was challenged to succeed. The seriousness toward commitment was not lost as I prospected. I was eventually invited to accept the role as a fully patched Sister of Scota. I am hon-
ored to be living and representing the commitment to upholding the Constitution and Bylaws as well as the Mission Statement and Ideals of our Founder and Sisters at Large by flying, always, the three piece colors of Sisters of Scota WMC on my back.

A husband and wife who worked for the circus went to an adoption agency. Social workers there raised doubts about their suitability. The couple produced photos of their 50-foot motor home, which was clean, well maintained and equipped with a beautiful bedroom for the child. The social workers raised concerns about the education a child would receive while in the couple’s care. “We’ve arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin and computer skills.” The social workers expressed concern about a child being raised in a circus environment. “Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet. In addition, there are 17 other children who travel with their circus parents.” The social workers were finally satisfied. They asked, “What age child are you hoping to adopt?” “It doesn’t really matter, as long as the kid fits into the cannon. ________________________________________________ A guy is at work one day when his buddy notices he is wearing an earring. The man walks up to him and says, “I didn’t know you were into earrings.” “Don’t make such a big deal, it’s only an earring,” he growls back. “So how long have you been wearing one?” “Ever since my wife found it in my truck.” ________________________________________________ A store that sells new husbands has opened for Christmas where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates: You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot
go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to The Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads: Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids. ‘That’s nice,’ she thinks, ‘but I want more.’ So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking. ‘Wow,’ she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help With Housework. ‘Oh, mercy me!’ she exclaims, ‘I can hardly stand it!’ Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads: Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak & Sexual Prowess. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 37,456,512 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at The Husband Store. Attention: To avoid gender bias charges, the store’s owner opened The Wife Store just across the street. The first floor has Wives That Love Sex. The second floor has wives that Love Sex, Have Money of Their Own and Prefer Beer Over Expensive Mixed Drinks. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited. hat a great year this has been for Thunder Road Church. We were able to reach and help more people through some of the worst predicaments of life. Without judgment, we welcomed them into our church from whatever road they came from. We had inmates that were freed come to visit, we had new people with one week of being clean visit us, we had more bikers, exbikers, non-bikers, and everyone in between come visit Thunder Road Church in 2016. Each and every person that visited Thunder Road said the same thing; “There is something different about this place. We seem to fit right in here”. And to that I say, “Hallelujah!” We are not here to impress anyone, we are here to welcome everyone, just as they are. Our job is not to change anyone, but to share the transforming truth that literally will set you free. We’ve seen more lives change than we ever have. It’s just an amazing thing to witness when someone comes in here at their lowest point, and in just a few weeks, their lives are transformed and they can’t help but smile, looking forward to helping someone else that is far worse off than themselves. My friends, that is the Christmas miracle! It is not the bright new shiny bike, the new pair of chaps, the Thunder header under the tree, or the new set of
apes waiting to be unwrapped. The miracle is what happened over 2000 years ago that not only changed the world, but continues changing lives each and every day. As you ride during this Christmas season, take a moment and contemplate your heart. When you are participating in the various toy runs this year, be it the MMA Toy Run, the Renegades Toy Run, the Auburn Toy Run, or the Nevada City Toy Run, remember why we are participating in a toy run. It’s to celebrate Christmas, and to bring a little peace and happiness to those little children that are a little less fortunate and may be hurting this Christmas season. The exact same reason 2000 years ago a Savior came to the lost and hurting world, whose children were a little less fortunate and internally hurting. May your holiday season be filled with hope, help, and healing. Whoever you are, remember you are loved and always welcome at Thunder Road Biker Church. Merry Christmas and God Bless America! MY TWO CENTS:
MERRY CHRISTMAS! Here we go again. The holiday’s are officially upon us. This is the time of year we get to see family and friends. Some of which we don’t see enough and can’t wait to be with them again, and others… not so much. I love seeing my family and miss seeing them all the time and I miss seeing my friends too. It seems like we just don’t get to see enough of each other. And then there is the – ‘not so close distant relative’ who you see only during the holidays. This is the person that voices his opinion about everything, he thinks Sons of Anarchy is a true story and has nothing in common with anyone there. And yet, every year he shows up and makes you wonder how the hell he makes it through the rest of the year without getting an ass whooping every day! You know who I’m talking about…”the one who starts putting food in his to-go bag at the dinner table and drinks too much and by the end of the evening knocks over the Christmas tree, starts arguing with everyone (including the little kids) and then throws up in the dishwasher. And guess what!? He’ll be back next year! Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE the holidays! I love seeing family and friends, and even the cold weather doesn’t bother me. I just don’t like the commercialization of Christmas. I think that’s what stresses people out for the holidays. Some people are so worried
about getting gifts for loved ones and guests that it takes the joy out of the holidays, and they lose sight of what it’s all about. I know about the historical and religious celebrations for the holidays; but for me, the best part about the holidays is being with family and friends. And let’s not forget about the food! I’m talking about the food leading up to the holidays and the food of the holidays. There’s the Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings, appetizers, pies and cakes! The Christmas dinner with prime rib, turkey or ham and all the baked goods leading up to it and then there’s the New Year’s Day feast after the annual ride. That’s always a feast fit for a king after the ride. HA! A motorcycle ride on a brisk winter day and a feast fit for a king is the perfect way to start a new year! So if the stress of the holidays is getting to you - go for a ride and let the wind help you sort it out. The ride is always there and waiting for you, and very rarely is there a stressful ride.
