A

s I am writing this we are heading into a long stretch of 100 plus degree days. Makes me wish I lived on the north coast somewhere. Yep - Summer is here! And along with summer’s arrival, there are more and more events added to our FREE Upcoming Event Calendar everyday! And we are doing our BEST to be at as many events as we can possibly put on our own calendar so that we can bring them to you through our publication. We were asked recently “why does this dealership or club have their events in your calendar – and our event is not in there?” Our answer is “that is because it was delegated to someone by the dealership or club to be responsible to submit the event to our magazine for the calendar”. It’s pretty easy – anyone can do it by going to our website www.thunderroadsnorcal.com – and BOOM – it is now on all of Northern California’s upcoming event radar! At the end of the month, we are heading to the central coast for the 70th Annual Hollister Independence Rally. We are really looking forward to this year. Stop by and see us at the Veterans Memorial Building on San Benito Street. We’ll be smack in the middle of town, it will be transformed into the Wild One Saloon from 9am-9pm for this year’s rally. July is packed full of great events to attend so make sure to check in with the events listings in the back of this issue and get out and ride. We are looking forward to seeing you all out at some of the great events on the July calendar. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we are always looking for contributors in NorCal that would like share photos and share what you and others may have experienced at an event. Just email us your article (thunderroadsnorcal@ yahoo.com) about the event you attended along with a few photos – it may just get printed! Now you can brag to your friends and say you are a published writer or photographer! How cool is that? On another note, we have been working hard at putting out more ‘behind the scenes’ videos on YouTube. Follow along with our adventures as we go about putting this magazine together each month, you are sure to get some great ride destination ideas, day rides, product reviews, as well as events we go to, you might want to consider some of them for next year. Dear Thunder Roads NorCal Thank you for meeting with me at Iron Steed’s Hot Rods & Harley’s event last weekend. I appreciate meeting you and discussing the opportunity to praise Craig Griswold and Mary Kirby and their shop TWO GUNNERS CUSTOM IRON. Once in a while, you come across people who go above and beyond the normal realm of everyday life. I want to express my sincere appreciation by sharing my story about my experience with TWO GUNNERS CUSTOM IRON in Penn Valley, CA and my 1993 Sportster. I left Colorado last August heading to the HOG rally in Washington. By the time I arrived there, my bike, affectionately known as ‘Samantha’, was leaking oil and missing – on a newly rebuilt motor. I took it easy riding down to California to visit my friend, Kelly, before heading home. I thought that I could limp back to Colorado, but poor ‘Samantha’ was puking oil out of both front and rear rockers faster than I could pour it in. I called Kelly and she told me about Craig and Mary of TWO GUNNERS CUSTOM IRON. I rode back from Reno and called Craig, who told me to come on over and he would take a look. On discussing the possibilities, he offered to store and work on the bike through the winter until I could fly back out in the spring. One of the first things that he discovered was that the rocker covers were warped and the gaskets were misaligned. Making use of the time available, I also had the steering head bearings replaced, fork oil changed, a new clutch cable, and fuel line. All set for Spring. I flew back out in May, Craig gave ‘Samantha’ a courtesy ‘warm up’ for me, only to discover the rear rockers were leaking oil. We had thought that the problem was solved. After some frustration, for all involved, he dug deeper and found that the mechanic – who rebuilt the motor – had stripped two bolts in the rear cylinder, and rather than fix the problem correctly, installed longer bolts….which did not allow the proper torque. Craig drilled and heli-coiled the cylinder and ‘Samantha’ was buttoned up, no leaks, no problems, no more worries! The courtesy of allowing me to keep ‘Samantha’ at their shop from September through May, while she was repaired was such a relief and is much appreciated. Their professionalism and sense of humor through this frustrating time has been a blessing. I am happy to have renewed confidence in my bike, which just rolled over 123,000 miles. MY TWO CENTS:

CHECK YOURSELF, BEFORE YOU WRECK It was a warm sunny morning when I pulled the bike out to go to work. By the time I hit third gear I knew it was time to take the back roads to work, it was just too nice and I could use a little wind therapy. The next thing I know its balls out into the turns! I hammer a hard left and let off the throttle to make the right and hammer the throttle. I throw my bike into a hard left then a tight right and there ain’t a car in sight! I twist my throttle in the apex and here I go! Damn my bike handles good! The next thing I remember is I was supposed to open the shop about 45 minutes ago and I’m still about a half hour away. Holy shit! I lost track of time and got carried away! Now I gotta ride like hell to open the shop. As many of you already know I have a motorcycle collision shop specializing in Harley-Davidson frame repair, and I also do a lot of swing arm alignments to eliminate the high speed wobble. My bike doesn’t have a wobble but I hear a lot of horror stories about motorcycle accidents from the wobble and some that are not so much accidental, like bikers who get cut off on purpose or run off the road by some dumb ass biker hating asshole, but that’s a story for another time.

owner of that bikes’ ass pucker up so hard they gag on their boxers. Look this is a real problem that not everyone has and if you don’t, good for you. If you do, I would suggest getting your bike aligned before you go slapping a bunch of parts on it. I have guys that come in and they have custom high performance inverted front ends, suspension and engine stabilizers on their bikes and they still have a wobble. That’s because all these great products are put on a bike that’s not properly aligned. And it’s not the mechanics fault! You can’t see it with the naked eye! Once you align your bike and the wobble is gone you’ll get the full benefit of all these great products available to you! Align it and make it handle right before you make it high performance! Otherwise you’re just putting lipstick on a pig…… or in your case lipstick on a hog. That’s my two cents, go have fun and ride like hell! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

I got a few customers who have gone down on their bikes because of the wobble. The Harley wobble is a real thing and that cannot be disputed. I get customers that come in and say “Dude! I thought I was gonna die once I hit 80 or 85 MPH, my bike was out of control, ride it bro and you’ll see what I mean.” Really? The last thing I want to do is ride a bike with a wobble so severe it makes the

n our last day ride out of San Francisco, we went north. This time we decided to head in the southernly direction - down along the coast to Santa Cruz for lunch and back. So we hopped on Interstate 280 South and followed the Hwy 1 exit through Pacifica. It was a kind of foggy overcast day, but hoped the sun might pop out later in the afternoon. After a stop near Pedro Point to take in some scenic coastline, we headed for Grey Whale Cove State Beach. This is probably the nicest area along this section of the coast. The mountains extend right out to the sea and with the windswept trees, it makes for some excellent photo ops. By the way, I guess this beach is similar to Black’s

Beach in the south, it is clothing optional. Since it was early February and cold, there weren’t any nudists around, only a lady and her pooch. We hiked down toward the beach to check things out. Shhhh… don’t tell the wife, but I did keep a sharp eye out, though, just in case supermodel, Bar Refaeli should spring from the bushes in all her glory and head down to the water for a polar bear swim. Of course, being the gentleman that I am, as she came out of the surf, I would offer her my jacket to get warm. Then....What’s that you say? I’m dreaming? Hey, it could’ve happened! Or maybe I was thinking of next year’s Super Bowl commercial.

Anyway, it didn’t and we climbed back up to the scooter and headed to Half Moon Bay. Some nice beaches to be seen along this stretch and one unique place right off Hwy 1 is the Tidehouse (formerly Cameron’s Pub and Inn). A little of old London on the west coast with double decker buses, taxis and just about everything British. We were off again with our next stop to Pescadero’s Pigeon Point Lighthouse. This is a good spot to take a little break. Outstanding coastal views and if you are into hostels, this one could be considered five star. After a quick stop in Davenport at the Whale City Bar and Grill we rode on to Santa Cruz. When our daughter went to UCSC, we were down here a lot, but now it had been awhile since our last visit. One of our favorite places to lunch Colma Graveyard is the El Palomar Restaurant on Pacific Ave - great Mexican food and cantina – we recommend the shrimp burritos or got off on Hwy 9 - a nice winding road through mostly enchiladas. AfterHenflings lunch, we Ben got back on Hwy 1 and quickly forest terrain that eventually takes you to Skyline Blvd. If Lomond you haven’t eaten or are in need of a cold one, Henfling’s Firehouse Tavern in Ben Lomond is a biker friendly place to hang out. Had some great vintage Harleys out front the day we were there. So on we go, Hwy 9 treats us to more twists through the forest - once on Skyline Blvd, things open up a bit and if the foggy overcast wasn’t hanging with us today, the views down the valleys would’ve be pretty impressive. Don’t know if “you can get anything you want” there, but Alice’s Restaurant is a favorite for those traveling on Skyline Blvd. After paying homage to Alice, we putted on to 280 North to our last stop in Colma. Not too long ago, we were watching one of our favorite movies, Tombstone - you know with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer? At the end of the movie, it says that Wyatt Earp and Sadie are buried in Colma. So we said the next time we were through there, we would see if we could find the gravesite not so easy. Colma isn’t very big (only two sq miles), but almost the entire town is made up of mostly cemeteries. The city motto is “It’s great to be alive in Colma”. For every person above ground, there are one thousand below. It wasn’t always this way. Because of rising property values, in 1912, San Francisco passed a law evicting all cemeteries from the city – with approximately 17 cemeteries moving to Colma. Joe DiMaggio, William Randolph Hearst, Levi Strauss are some of the famous people buried there. We eventually found the right cemetery and then Cindy found the headstone. As the sun was sinking low to the west and our goals now completed, we headed back to San Francisco. 4th Annual CHOPPER BOB MEMORIAL RUN May 21 (Lincoln): The Feather River Canyon is one of the most scenic rides in Northern California. Bob took this ride once a year for many year although his last ride was on May 10th 2013. Bob’s wife, his dog Bo and a few of Chopper Bob’s friends continue to ride the canyon every year in his memory. It was a great turn out, for the ones that knew Chopper Bob, and also for the ones that have heard of his legacy. All were ready to re-ride Bob’s last ride in his honor. There were two starting points with the first one in Sacramento where Bob’s wife and his dog Bo were there to guide the bikers to Clinton’s Custom Cycles in Lincoln, where more riders were waiting to start the day. Dave Halie of Bikers for Christ showed up with his club buddies and wives to send the riders off with a blessing for protection during the run. Mike Clinton of Clinton’s Custom Cycles said a prayer and the ride began. The riders all behaved, by doing the speed limit on State Route 65 into Marysville, but when we hit State Route 70 - the fun was on. A good hard ride into the canyon has become customary. Bob’s wife said she could feel Bob smiling down on them and saying “Yeah Baby - that’s the way to do it!” The entire ride through the Feather River Canyon is about 200 miles and takes close to 100 miles to get there. Some rode the entire ride, and some rode part way. Either way you ride it, the scenery is awesome. The first stop was for

lunch in Belden. Bob’s dog “Bo” was ready to get a hamburger and water. The rest of us were also ready to take a break. The ride continued through Quincy on to Graeagle, with the last stop in Downieville. The weather stayed in the 80’s for the entire ride as the snow was melting at the higher elevation. We all took a rest stop to check out the snow, and chat with a fella that was dressed like a frontiersman that just came off the set from a Davy Crockett movie. It was a great day filled with lots of pictures, memories and riding with friends through the scenic canyon. Hope to see ya next year! 6TH ANNUAL GOOD OL’ BOYS MC VETERANS RUN

May 28 (Santa Rosa): Terri and I were excited to get back out to Sonoma County for the 6th Annual Veterans Run put on by the hard working crew from the Good OL’ Boys MC. This crew and their dozens of dedicated volunteers really know how to put on an event that everyone can enjoy. If you spend any time at all around the Good Ol’ Boys MC you will know that they are a patriotic bunch of guys, but they don’t stop there they put in countless hours to help raise money for many local organizations like Vet Connect that help serve our veterans with variety of needs from clothing, a roof over their head or an understanding hand up in life. As we pulled into the big parking lot of the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Rosa, there were several bikes already there and vendors were already set up. And in the adjacent parking lot, several classic cars were setting up for the car show portion of the event with much appreciated support from BKM ( Brian Miller Drywall) for their big time support of our troops. And the raffle table was a sight to behold, from all appearances it looked like it was Christmas in May! The stage was set with Paulies Garage Band making full use of it as they entertained the large local crowd with their tunes. Riders gathered for to the Pledge

of Allegiance and our National Anthem performed beautifully by another local talent - Shannon Rider. It was time to saddle up as hundreds of motorcycles traveled the two mile route to Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Bikers gathered for a heartfelt and emotional ceremony complete with a color guard. After the brief ceremony, it is encouraged for all in attendance to place a carnation onto the head stone of a fallen hero. The cool thing about this gesture is it happens the day before Memorial Day – with the intent that on Memorial Day when family members come to pay their respects, they’ll see this carnation and will know that someone remembers the sacrifice of their loved one who served our country. Next up for the day is a very scenic ride through Sonoma County before returning to the Veterans Memorial Building and the party really ramps up! Vendors are busy and inside the bartenders are pouring cocktails with all the proceeds going

to the cause. Another thing that really sets this run apart from others is that the GOB MC bring in the ECV 1004 Scullery Crew who donate their time and expertise to cook up a steak dinner along with all the fixins’…PLUS a t-shirt is included in the $25 entry fee! Wow! The meal alone is worth putting this event on your calendar! It just feels real good to be a part of this event, so we here at Thunder Roads NorCal want to give a personal big thank you for giving us and all the other riders an opportunity to celebrate the enormous sacrifice that our Veterans make on our behalf. After the day was done -the Good Ol’ Boys MC

M

y name is Peter Ström and I am 54 years old from Stockholm, Sweden. I have a few bike-builds behind me – I built my wife’s FXR trike, Sportster chopper for myself, Sportster bobber with a lot of engraving on for my daughter. Every one of them has been well appreciated and written about in big number of magazines around the world. With this build I wanted a Dragracing/Hot Rod style! So it was obvious to ask Håkan at MOON Sweden for help with parts. Because let’s face it, what’s more associate with Dragracing / Hot Rod than MOON. The whole bike is built around the legendary Aluminium oil tank from MOON. I started the project with an original Sportster -03 frame, but instead of following everyone else and make it rigid in the back, I wanted to keep the shocks to have the old school look. The whole front frame was cut away, the back frame I shorted 2” and the middle frame was made so the MOON oil tank fit in. A new front frame got build from under the front motor mount to the lowered back frame, everything to get a more fluid and straight line. The measures of the bike is 3” up, 39 degree rake, the fork is 10” over with a 5 degrees triple three.

Instead of a lot of MOON-builds that is all MOON-yellow - I wanted the same effect as the oil tank – brushed aluminium - so that started the hunt of aluminium parts! The gas tank is a stretched sportster aluminium tank from Easy Rider Japan, the back fender is a Tsunami from Lowbrows. The front fairing is from Hippie killer garage that needed a lot of grinding because of the bad quality of the casting. Everything got wet-sanded to get the brushed look. The idea of the paint I got from the back of the box that some of the MOON parts come in. To get the racing style stronger and put some MOON-yellow on I decided to make two yellow stripes all the way through the bike that makes a frame for the Mooneyes logos in the middle! The rest is brushed aluminium with clear coat. The wheel is original old 16 – 19” Mag wheels from the 80’s. The center got painted in satin black and the edges were grinded to get that brushed look and aluminium sprocket in the back. The break and clutch leavers is from a sportster -06, where the electricity bottoms are removed and replaced with LC-fabrication “Switch housing delete” for a cleaner look !! The break master cylinder cap is from the MOON, the front break is from a Sportster -06. To make the front break fit the fork, I had to re-weld the brackets. The Brake discs are from DNA with a black centre. Frame, swing and the fork and all the parts that isn’t brushed or yellow is powder coated in satin black. I think that there is not a piece on the bike that is chromed! Another person that I got a lot of help from is “Otto” from Biltwell Inc USA. The saddle, handlebar, the gas handle, cap for cv and the footpegs came from Biltwell. Everything with extremely high quality and style. The engine is a Sportster -03 crank case, Hammer Performance 1250 cc cylinders with hi comp piston, the heads is Sportster -06 XB that are made to breathe easier, cams are Hammer Performance. The clutch is EMF auto clutch with kevlar plates! This makes the shifting really fast!! You only get off the throttle extremely little and shift!! You don’t need to use the clutch handle! You shift then full throttle again!! Gear box is 5 speed, The engine breathes thru a 2-1 Screaming Eagle exhaust. It makes about little over 100HP on the back tire! I

t is Independence month and one of my favorite months of the year. The month is all about FREEDOM. Freedom from the tyranny and oppression from a country that was putting a strong hold on the American beliefs and the American way that was forming. Fourth of July is the day we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the most significant statement is published that reads; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” At the end of the Declaration it reads, “And for the support of this Declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor.” I just returned from New York, which included a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, so I want to dedicate this article to the men and women who gave their life to help and save the lives of thousands of Americans. To hold true to what we so strongly believe in and hold in high regard; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. There is no other country on the planet that comes back ever so strong when tyranny hits our shores. The 9/11 Memorial, although solemn, is a very powerful statement of the American Spirit and that no foe will ever cripple or break us, but only make us stronger. Stephen P. Driscoll (NYPD) a military brother, father, husband, and son that I served in the Navy with lost his life while trying to free the victims in the South Tower. He is honored at the Memorial, and when I found his name and his picture, every emotion ran through my soul; anger, loss, sadness, revenge, love, and pride. As a Christian, I sometimes ask myself why I continue to pursue those that are still lost, those that are still struggling, and those that are being tormented by the tyranny of the enemy. An enemy that is trying to lead them astray, break apart their families, destroy their marriages, end their friendships with arrogance and lies. Then, I reflect on why my friend Stephen ran into those towers to save the people, knowing full well that he may never get a chance to see his wife or 14-year-old son again. He ran into a burning building that was about to collapse to try and save “Just One More”. He pledged his life, his fortune, and made a Sacred Honoring vow to defeat tyranny and save the principle of freedom regardless of color, creed, or ethnic heritage. He did it because they were Americans! I do it because I am a Christian, and I too am against tyranny, hatred and the principalities of evil. I do it because I made a Sacred Vow to help when I can, serve when I can, and lead as many as I can to Freedom. There is One who came to save and give us life, and one who came to kill, steal and destroy. I am for FREEDOM! I am for PEACE! I am for JOY! The Johnny Young Band

endocino County is the home of many high profile bike fabricators, it also have bragging rights as the home of a high profile band making tracks in the music industry almost as fast as the speed of light - The Johnny Young Band. They call their style Mendo (Mendocino) Music - writing music that is music indicative of their Mendocino county surroundings. They are trying not to do labels or anything other than organically created music, that has a smattering of all influence: rock, country, jazz, blues, heavy metal, and a tinge of hard rock. They feel totally blessed, living in Mendocino County, not only for it’s beautiful terrain, but simply because the market for high energy music is still small enough, and the people of Mendocino appreciate it a little more as opposed to other areas, where there is a lot more entertainment options. When The Johnny Young Band plays in their hometown, the people come out in droves to see them. The Mendocino population knows good music when they hear it! Johnny Young has dedicated 100% of his time to get the band recognized in other areas of California and it has paid off handsomely. Today, they are recognized as one the best country western bands in the Northern California area. This Thunder Roads contributor was invited to a recent JYB performance at Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina in South Shore Lake Tahoe, where I was able to spend a little quality time with the band before their first set. By the end of their gig, I was convinced that The Johnny Young Band was unique in their style and had the star quality it took to rise to the top. As seasoned touring musicians, some of them have played such venues as The Grand Ole Opry, Warped Tour and the NBC’s Today Show to name just a few. Since coming together two years ago, they have surprisingly enough already released their first single ‘We LOVE Whiskey’ to Reverbnation. Check it out at www.reverbnation.com Johnny Young: Lead singer/ songwriter - A highly regarded multiinstrumental, singer/songwriter with an affable presence when he steps on stage, along with full confidence that his audience will not be disappointed. Seconds into their first set, the audience was instantly transformed into “let’s party mode”, up on their feet, dancing to the beat and having a great time. Johnny has received recognition for his artistic abilities, voted by the L.A. Music Award for rockabilly album of the year. He was voted 1st place at the Rising Of The Stars: a competition held annually in Mendocino County and is associated with KY Radio. This is not Johnny’s first rodeo at forming a band. In 1993, Johnny along with a group of other musicians formed a cover-band called Hookah Stew. They played an impressive amount of songs, to accommodate just about any audience. In the early days, the band members literally lived in a car, riding from town to town picking up gigs along the way. The band eventually upgraded their itinerary and living arrangements, but after a 20-year run, they decided it was time to turn the page and go on to new adventures. For a year and a half Johnny played with various other bands. He ended up playing bass with a touring country western band, traveling North America doing festival shows. It was two years ago when Johnny

received a call from a booking agent looking for a country-rock band. Johnny reached out to a few of his friends Rick, Sid along with one other, to see if they were interested in forming a country-rock band for the booking agent…yes, they were very interested. The band was formed, but when it came to naming the band, the agent advised Johnny to call it Johnny Young. Reluctantly Johnny put his name up, but added the word “band” to his name, simply because it is a band, where each member has duties within. Nick Ford: Bass guitar - Nick has been playing since his early teens. After graduation, he moved to Las Vegas to play music. Nick was there about 20 years and was showcased with various high profile bands. In 2008, Nick returned to Mendocino, he subbed for Hookah Stew, before joining the Johnny Young Band in 2015. Sid Walker: Fiddle/Violin – Sid was once a native of Nashville,Tennessee occasionally playing the fiddle at the Grand Ole Opry for all-time greats like Billy Currington, Kevin Denney, Mel McDaniel, Rhett Akins and Kevin Sharp to name a few. Michael Masters: Drummer- A past band member for Hookah Stew, Michael came on board 6 months after their debut, at Johnny’s invitation, he moved from the Midwest to Mendocino, to join the newly established band. Johnny is presently coordinating a fundraiser to establish a Thomas Young Memorial Fund, for his deceased brother who was born with spina bifida. His condition involved several major procedures and surgeries that would have been impossible for his parents to afford without the financial help from the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

May 20 (Sacramento): Imagine race day- perfect conditions for racing, beautiful weather, great food, cold beer, awesome vendor booths, families, MC Clubs, riders from all over and more people attending the flat track than ever before. This year the Sacramento Mile took place UNDER THE LIGHTS at Cal Expo during a warm spring day. What contributed to the day was the energy of the crowd and racers. Everyone was in sync. Several motorcyclists took advantage of the convenient and free motorcycle parking sponsored in part by Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. We headed out to the pits to get up close to meet and greet some of the flat track racers. The favorites to win the Main event of the day being Indian Motorcycles Racers (aka The Wrecking Crew) Bryan Smith (1), Brad Baker (6) and Jared Mees (9), three of the world’s top racers all riding Indian’s Scout FTR750. It was in fact during an exciting fight for 1st place that these three put on a frantic show of power, speed and skill with each one taking

their turn passing the others up and leading the crowd to frantic screaming as we all became one with the race. It was Bryan Smith who pulled ahead to take the win securing his 7th Grand National Champion win. Mees was patiently signing autographs on his caps, shirts and posters. He gave me a friendly wave and gladly took a picture with me and signed a t-shirt for Dan. I ran into Kenny Roberts signing autographs with Joe Kopp sitting on Kenny’s legendary Yamaha 750 that was outlawed in the 70’s for being too fast to race. Joe would soon ride this bike for a hot lap during the opening ceremonies, amidst the loud excited crowd. Setting up were Harley Davidson factory team Kenny Coolbeth Jr (2), Jake Johnson (5) and Brandon Robinson (44). I was impressed with upcoming AFT Singles star on a Honda 450, Cameron Smith (44) riding for 12 yrs (4 pro). He maintains his own bike and has the support of his family who attend each race. After winning he popped a wheelie

half way down the track and daringly shook hands with his buddy while they were both riding back in. We’ll be watching for you Cameron! e all know by now that Victory Motorcycles are no longer in production but it is still a great bike and if you own one and want to customize it this is a great example of what is possible. This 2016 Victory Cross Country is a custom build from the guys at Sykotic Industries and Victory of Citrus Heights. If you are not yet familiar with Sykotic Industries, this is the kind of work they do and they will customize all American V-Twin manufactures from Harley-Davidson to Indian and Victory. They can and have done it all. Sykotic Industries over the last few years have developed a very nice line of aftermarket parts like floorboards, foot and hand controls, saddle bags and rear fenders. They are currently in the process of developing more H-D and Indian parts that will turn your ride into a distinctive full custom that is sure to turn heads each time it rolls out of your garage. Another area of expertise that Sykotic Industries brings to the equation is a sound system for your American V-twin manufactured motorcycles. I can tell you that they can dial in the sound from experience, if you are going to make your ride look good it needs to sound as good as it looks. Plus they collaborate with some of the best in the business like Seatworks who can customize and match a seat to a custom build like no other, and James Dean of Rebel Design painter extraordinaire who has won more Best in Paint trophies than anyone I know, just as an example. AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS HONOR OUR FALLEN May 29 (Dixon): American Legion Riders (ALR) Chapter 383 members roared down HWY 80 led by ALR president Don Lemmon for a patriotic Memorial Day ride to the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon to honor and remember our nation’s Veterans. The AL Riders and Patriot Guard Riders (some of whom are AL members) held our U.S. flags high in a flag line encircling the Memorial Day ceremony presenters and crowd. Veterans spoke to the blood and tears shed by our fallen heroes, remembering the men and women who gave their lives defending our freedom. Roses were distributed to the crowd for placement on the burial sites. The American Legion Riders placed a rose on each burial site visited in honor of the fallen veteran, and after a moment of silence, reading their name, rendered a salute. The American Legion Riders are a group of veterans from across the nation that love motorcycle riding, gave thanks and recognition this Memorial Day to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice reminding us freedom is not free. 2nd Annual Miller Built Performance Bikini Bike Wash May 13 (Cameron Park): Miller Built Performance was buzzing with activity for their 2nd Annual Bikini Bike Wash. This shop has quickly built a great reputation in the community and wanted to show their customers some appreciation by throwing a big party. Several vendors were on hand along with a few lovely ladies to wash your bike. I have to say that the girls did a pretty decent job actually washing the bikes plus they were easy on the eyes! I have noticed at other bikini bike washes that the girls are more interested in posing for my camera than washing the bike (not that there is anything wrong with that!) but the Miller Built girls did both – kudos to them! We also want to give a big shout out to Cruz Bail Bonds for taking on the task of feeding everyone- they did it in style with some delicious tacos! Orangevale local - CJ Barham made an appearance with his friends from the Out Here Crew to do some serious stunt riding and that they did, keeping the crowd entertained with some exceptional motorcycle riding skills. June 4 (Vacaville): The Thunder Roads NorCal booth was set up at Iron Steed Harley-Davidson along with several other vendors that were here to take part in this long standing bike and car show presented by ABATE of CA Local 17. We started to realize that this year was going to be a bit different, it is always a good event but show bikes and cars just kept rolling in. Eventually the big parking lot was so full they had to stop taking entries. The crowd soon followed as this turned out to be a perfect spring day without the extreme heat as in previous years. Food trucks and vendors were on hand with several menu item options available to choose from as well as a very busy beer booth that our booth was conveniently located next to. The very talented Terry Sheets Band entertained the crowd with one of their last performances. Hope you were here so you didn’t miss him. A big shout out to TRM NorCal contributors, Foot and Jennifer as guest judges who carefully viewed each bike entry as it was no small task this year with all the bikes entered into the show. The top three in each category received a nice trophy for bragging rights as the competition this year was tough. Congratulations to all the contestant! The hard working crew and friendly staff at Iron Steed HarleyDavidson along with ABATE 17 members did a outstanding job organizing this one-day event! Cove Rats Ride: Off The Grid with Monkey and Sparkplug

T

his spring, I thought it would be a good idea for the Cove Rats M/C of Shelter Cove to take a ride to two separate campgrounds about a day’s ride away. The first was a campground at the Salmon River Saloon which is owned by a colorful character named “Monkey.” This campground is 35 miles from the power lines and operates with generator power in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. I had been here once before on a ride with a group of old bikers called “The Morons.” The other campground was one that my neighbors, Keith and Patty had told me about that was for “motorcycles only “! It was operated by an old school biker friend of theirs named “Sparkplug”. It was located in O’Brien, Oregon which is about seven miles from the California border near Cave Junction. The two campgrounds were close together and I envisioned a unique adventure for the Cove Rats. Sure enough, Cove Rat Brothers Virgil, Joe, and Steve were intrigued as well so we planned to ride in early June. On Sunday morning, Virgil, Joe and I left Shelter Cove and headed to Eureka to meet club brother Steve. We rode to Weaverville via Highway 299, then north on Highway 3 to Callahan. Riding for miles along Trinity Lake, we appreciated how beautiful and full the lake was, while remembering last year when it was virtually dry. We took the Callahan-Cecilville Road into Cecilville which is 30 miles west of Callahan. There was snow along the roadsides, as well as on the mountaintops. We met owner, “Monkey” at the Salmon River Saloon and as we were having a drink, a white helicopter landed in the field next to the Saloon. Monkey told us that Dave from Shasta Air had been giving rides to the previous guests. Virgil, who is a helicopter pilot himself happened to know Dave. It was only a three passenger helicopter, so we paid Monkey for rides for Virgil, Steve and me. Joe, a regular airplane pilot, was good staying back and letting us have some fun. But as we boarded the helicopter, he said to me “If anything happens, can I have your Harley??” The pilot, Dave, took us on a breathtaking trip over Grizzly Lake in the Trinity Alps which, at 9000 feet was still frozen. We also saw half frozen waterfalls and the tops of mountains which looked spectacular. It was a great ride… and I got to keep my Harley! Later, we set up camp and ate burgers at the Salmon River Saloon. There is a stage at the campground where big names like Snoop Dog and Metallica have played. Metallica played because a band member had stopped by while on a ride and then returned later with the band to perform. On Monday, we cleaned up, broke camp and rode out of Cecilville on the Forest Service Road north to Forks of Salmon and on to Sawyers Bar. We rode parallel to the Salmon River. That road is a narrow one lane winding road with a solid rock cliff on one side and the river on the other side and no room for error.

on to the town of Happy Camp, turning onto the Indian Valley Road. Then we rode up the mountain to 6000 ft. elevation - this road had just opened and was cleared of snow 2 days earlier. We felt real lucky about that. On the other side of the mountain, we dropped down into Oregon and headed west on Highway 199 to mile marker #40. “Sparkplug” had already told us this was where his campground was. After mile marker 40 was a sign of a sparkplug then we came upon another sign saying “Sparkplug’s Wilderness”. We had arrived! “Sparkplug” and his wife Tracie greeted us with their tiny guard dog named “Jeep” and cold beers in a cooler. This 6 acres campground has a swimming hole, fire pit and a cooking area called “the galley”. We selected our camp sites and then rode eight miles to Cave Junction for dinner. It was still light when we returned to camp and we all sat by the fire, drank a couple of beers and talked late in the evening. Sparkplug told us he was hosting a Veterans event followed by an event called ShovelFest. This is an annual event for...you guessed it... Shovelheads! That night we slept soundly under the stars and awoke in the morning to the sounds of wild turkeys gobbling. It was a wonderful three day adventure filled with great memories. TECH TIPS: SPARK PLUGS

used to think spark plugs were the most over changed maintenance part on the bike. My thought on this changed after I chased a misfire issue for several hours. I would pull the plugs and ground them, crank the engine over and observe a nice bright blue spark. After I would re-install them and start the engine, the same cylinder would go cold. Finally after repeating this process several times and ruling out all other issues, the answer revealed itself almost by accident. After removing the plug for the last time, the insulator crumbled in my hand and I noticed the electrode inside the plug was severely corroded. On the outside the plug looked good. Coincidentally, every time I installed the plug the electrode would break continuity and go dead. Every time I pulled the plug and grounded it to the head it would fire, a result of disrupting the rusty electrode pieces inside the plug. The spark plug is simple in theory: It forces electricity to arc across a gap, just like a bolt of lightning. The voltage must be very high in order to travel across the gap and create a good spark. Voltage at the spark plug can be anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 volts depending on the vehicle/ignition system. The spark plug must have an insulated passageway for this high voltage to travel down to the electrode, where it can jump the gap and, from there, be conducted into the engine block and grounded. The plug also has to withstand the extreme heat and pressure inside the cylinder, and must be designed so that deposits from fuel additives do not build up on the plug. Spark plugs use a ceramic insulator to isolate the high voltage at the electrode, ensuring that the spark occurs at the tip of the electrode and not anywhere else on the plug; this insulator does doubleduty by helping to burn off deposits. Ceramic is a fairly poor heat conductor, so the material gets very hot during operation. This heat helps to burn off

deposits from the electrode. A common misconception is how heat range is defined. The “hot” and “cold” in plug vernacular has nothing to do with the spark. Some bikes require a hot plug. This type of plug is designed with a ceramic insert that has a smaller contact area with the metal part of the plug. This reduces the heat transfer from the ceramic, making it run hotter and thus burn away more deposits. Cold plugs are designed with more contact area, so they run cooler.

The bike manufacturer will select the right temperature plug. Bikes with high-performance engines can generate more heat, so in some cases may need colder plugs. If the spark plug gets too hot, it could ignite the fuel before the spark fires (pre-ignition); too cold and its ability to burn off deposits is diminished which can lead to fouling. It is important to stick with the right type of plug for your bike. Ride safe! Next month we’ll look at reading plugs for diagnostics.

city limits-- on an ‘off’ year! So, because it was the 35th anniversary of the greatest party on earth: all of Sturgis felt the benefit. The city of Sturgis has in recent years made moves to grasp and guarantee further growth of their tax and licensing revenues by an attempt to annex Buffalo Chip and other nearby motorcycle entertainment venues with an expansion of their city limits to gain total control. This aggressive and unwarranted action was met with a true and certain resistance. The inception of the town of Buffalo Chip, South Dakota USA was the eventual result. Utilizing current regulations, and with strong ‘Free American Spirit’ Buffalo Chip incorporated as its own city and developed a Chamber of Commerce for Buffalo Chip, South Dakota…for at least two weeks a year it is the second largest city in South Dakota. This year will be a very similar draw for those riding to the Black Hills Rally 2017 at Buffalo Chip in South Dakota. With dozens of bands, entertainment and ‘off the hook’ activities during the week of August 6 through 14, if you get an “Early Bird” ticket you can set up your camp on July 31st and have your ‘tourist’ activities done by the time they start to party down at BC. And whether you are a crusty old hard-core motor rider like myself who sleeps ‘low with a glow’ inside a tent, or you haul a trailer camper or drive a motorhome: you should plan your trip now - go to www.buffalochip.com to check out the latest announcements. A man goes into a restaurant where all the waitresses are gorgeous. A particularly voluptuous waitress wearing a very short skirt comes to his table and asks, “What would you like, sir?” He looks at the menu, scans her beautiful frame top to bottom, and then answers, “A quickie.” The waitress turns and walks away in disgust. After she regains her composure she returns and asks again, “What would you like, sir?” Again the man thoroughly checks her out and again answers, “A quickie, please.” This time her anger takes over, she reaches over and slaps him across the face with a resounding SMACK! and storms away. A man sitting at the next table then leans over and whispers, “Um, I think it’s pronounced ‘quiche.’” ______________________________________________________ As a new, young MD doing his residency in OBGYN I was quite embarrassed when performing female pelvic exams. To cover my embarrassment I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. A very attractive young lady in her early 30’s whom I was performing this exam on suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassing me. I looked up from my work and sheepishly said...’I’m sorry. Was I tickling you?’ She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard ... ‘No doctor but the song you were whistling was... I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener.’ ______________________________________________________
