N

ovember is here and with it comes a couple of very important days to TRM NorCal. Veteran’s Day on the 11th. Try to remember that it’s MORE than a day off work and the banks and post offices being closed. It’s a day to reflect and be thankful for the sacrifices our Veterans (then and now) have made for our country. Better yet, personally ‘thank a vet’ and wish them a Happy Veterans Day that would be even better! On behalf of all of us at Thunder Roads NorCal - if you are a Veteran and reading this - we want to extend a sincere THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Thanksgiving…just typing the word makes me pause for a moment to reflect upon all that we are thankful for. Family comes to mind first, but that can mean a lot of different things. For us, there is our biological family, our closest friends - that we consider family and our biker family. Terry and I have been reflecting recently about this and it’s the reason it’s on my mind. We recognize that as life changes and the demands on us change with it; that we have not been able to connect with a lot of people that we wish we could. There are many of you that are constantly on our minds – our conversations go “I wonder how so and so is doing? I haven’t seen them for while”. For various reasons, we just never seem able to connect the way we’d like – but know that you are always on our mind. Our oldest son and his family moved to the east coast and it is going on 2 years now since we have seen them – but not a day goes by that we’re not thinking of them. I know that if we feel this way there has to be many more of you that feel the same way. Life and work obligations often take every second of our time and we struggle to find balance to not lose sight of the people that we care about. As they say…the struggle is real. But we also believe that out of every struggle there is a silver lining. For example without embarking on this journey with the magazine, we would have never met so many of you that have brought so much fun and joy to our lives. All we can do is try to look for the silver lining and strive for more balance. Hopefully we will see you at an upcoming event…how about making some plans to attend one or more toy runs along with TRM NorCal this season? Doing this will make a huge difference and it will help bring a bit of joy to an underprivileged kid and some much needed relief to parents that might be going through a rough time. Times are tough and there are many people in need. Together as a group, let’s reach out to make a difference to a struggling family and help out our local community while we are at it! Traditionally in our December issue, TRM NorCal remembers our brothers and sisters who have passed on in 2016 and are now riding with our heavenly angels. Please submit a photograph of your loved one by November 12th to ThunderRoadsNorCal@ yahoo.com - please be sure to include a photo, along with their names and “Rode In” and “Rode Out” dates (ie: epitaph dates) upon submission and we will include your loved one in our upcoming December issue. Tech Tips 84-99 Evo Big Twin Ignition Diagnostics

W

e’ve discussed the various ignition systems Harley-Davidson has used throughout the years. Let’s look at some potential problem areas and diagnostics for the venerable Evolution Big Twin. Although the ignition system is model year specific, some of these issues are germane to all bikes.

ule to shift back and forth and impart timing fluctuations on the system. Removing the module we also discovered the timing cup was loose. Number three! The cup provides the rotational reference to the module so it knows when to trigger the coil and fire the spark plugs.

Often times an ignition issue is mistakenly attributed to fuel delivery. Fuel delivery issues will usually present symptoms in the intake area like a cough or sputter. Incorrect tuning or more often, intake/vacuum leaks are the usual suspects here. Ignition malfunctions will usually cause backfiring through the exhaust (not to be confused with the deceleration popping through the exhaust from lean air/fuel mixtures or exhaust leaks). Our subject bike came in barely running and backfiring through the exhaust. Troubleshooting logic starting with the most common to least will work best and alleviate wasted time. Connections! This is huge on older bikes for several reasons. More folks have had their hands on the bike, some more skilled than others. Accordingly, wiring repairs can range from cheesy to professional. When the jury rigged electrical repairs start adding up over the years, the volume of problems follow. Even good connections will get long in tooth and become weathered. Then there’s vibration. The paint shaker on wheels is just an unforgiving environment for just about everything, including electrical connections. Look at the sub-harness to the coil. Frayed wiring at the ring terminals and broken ring terminals will give you trouble. Check the plug wires. Both the coil side and plug side connectors can come loose. You can use a multi-meter and measure resistance through the wire, although the specification is very broad (3,000-12,000 ohms/ft depending on the type). More importantly, just checking to see if you have continuity through the wire will tell the story. Check the connections at the ignition switch. Give it a jiggle and make sure the switch isn’t cutting power. They wear out too. Check the module wiring harness. This bike had an after-market performance module in the nose cone. The wiring harness exiting the nose cone was routed in such a way that allowed it to eventually make contact with the exhaust pipe. Problem one found! Opening the timing cover we discovered the timing plate stand-offs were loose. There’s the second issue.

and dry) would have prevented this.

Fortunately after all of this the ignition module managed to survive. After following the manufacturers’ instructions for setting the timing, the bike ran like a champ. Don’t forget the thread locker. A drop of blue on the timing cup bolt and the stand-off’s (threads must be clean

Coil(s). The static test for a coil includes a resistance check on the primary side (power supply and trigger wire(s)) and the secondary side (plug wire terminals). This will vary depending on the system so check your service manual. The key factor here is that if the coil fails this test you know it’s bad, if it passes you still can’t be sure. A coil can pass a static test but when you put power to it (heat) and bring up the RPM’s (vibration) that tiny, microscopic break way down inside the coil that showed perfect continuity separates just enough to behave until a certain engine speed is reached. We have had some malfunction at a very specific RPM while acting perfectly normal below and above that trouble point. The only way to eliminate this from your list is to install a known good coil and give it a run. Happy trouble shooting!

OPERATION FREEDOM

T

his month seemed to be the most appropriate time to showcase this motorcycle with you. TRM NorCal presents this month’s RIDE PRIDE to show our support and respect as we honor all of our Veterans on November 11th for Veteran’s Day. Gino Pilolla and Mark Baldridge of Victory Motorcycles of Citrus Heights and Sykotic Industries collaborated on this build to honor and benefit our military veterans. The bike was named “Operation Freedom” and after numerous late nights at their Citrus Heights shop which would often wrap up the following morning – “Operation Freedom” was unveiled on stage in front of Sturgis Rally goers in August. Plans are to have the bike auctioned off across the country in New York City at the 10th Annual IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) Heroes Gala (https://iava.org/heroesgala-2016/) on the eve of Veteran’s Day - November 10th. 100% of the proceeds from “Operation Freedom” will be used to help connect, unite and empower post 9/11 vets as they make the adjustment from active duty and combat to civilian life. It is a real honor to be associated with local Northern California businesses that generously give their time, money and creativity to help our Veterans. Castle Crags

RIDE DESTINATION

DUNSMUIR’S CASTLE CRAGS

W

here to go this month? We wanted to get down to Death Valley, but after a heat wave trip to So Cal the week before (110 degrees coming through Fresno) we decided the cooler North around Dunsmuir would be more to our liking. For our home base that weekend we chose the Railroad Park, which is right there in Dunsmuir. A nice, unique place to hang your hat for a few days. Plenty of options as far as accommodations go; the remodeled cabooses and boxcars are the main features. Four cabins are also available. If you have an RV or want to camp, there is also a beautifully shaded campground just up the road a piece.

Dining Area

Bar In Dining Car

Dinners are a weekend treat in the very fine dining cars. You feel like a railroad baron while being seated. The park is also kind of a museum, as there are locomotives, handcars, and other rail equipment peppered throughout the property, along with a pool and spa next to the running creek. But best of all, Railroad Park sits next to the base of Castle Crags, those incredible rock formations you get a glimpse of on I5. What a view! We wouldn’t be doing a lot of riding this trip. Instead we planned on doing some hiking, exploring and even a little boating. So after hitting the spa and spending the night in a cozy caboose, it was recommended that we have breakfast at the Wheelhouse Cafe down in town. A very good choice. Great food, extremely good coffee, and friendly service. From there we rode down I5 for a few miles to Castle Creek Road. This road will take you into Castle Crag State Park. We stopped at the Chevron there to pick up some water and munchies for our hike. We found the trail’s head for Bob’s Hat Trail and began our trek. This trail will take you to the Saddle Dome, Shasta which is nestled up in the Lake Wake Crags near the top. It is an Shot uphill, 5-6 hr. hike (round-

trip) that we knew we were not up to, so we set the intersection at the Pacific Crest Trail as our goal. We almost made it. Just not quite in shape enough yet for that kind of grade.

Mt Shasta Vista View I5 Bridge

After a rest, we made our way up the very twisty Castle Crag Road to the Vista Point. Now this is a must see! A short hike from the parking area will bring you to a clearing. There are three “windows” cut from the forest. Straight ahead is Castle Crags, to the left is the Gray Rocks Mountain opposite the Crags, and to the right is Mount Shasta. Nice, nice and very nice! We could have sat there the for rest of the day. By the way, if you continue up Castle Creek Road, rather than turning into the park, you can get another great view of the Crags, only from a different angle. Also, from the Vista Point is where we will begin our assault on Saddle Dome next year. After some more leg work, of course. Ha! The following day we were back on I5 heading to Lake Shasta and the Bridge Bay Resort. A nice relaxing cruise on the lake sounded good. There we rented a patio boat (kind of like a small houseboat, minus the house) for half a day. It was a buck and a quarter plus gas, not too bad. After filling out all the paperwork, we headed over to the store and loaded up with refreshments, ice, and finger foods. So we head around to the back of the store and what do we see? A staircase that looked almost straight down! We had to navigate 110 steps to reach the docks. Making the bottom and looking back up we realized it was not quite the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, but definitely a challenge loaded down the way we were. Yes, going back up was no treat either. But it was well worth the effort. Cruising around the lake was a lot of fun. We motored under the bridge and into some of the ‘fjords’. Later we made our way over to the dam side. It was great being out on the water surrounded by such fabulous scenery. One point on the lake offered some excellent views of Mount Shasta. Hated to leave, but it was time to head back to the Park and dinner. We stayed in one of the larger cabooses our last night and were up early the following morning. We made one last tour of the area before saying our goodbyes. We will be back!

11th Annual Renegade Rendezvous Bike Show & Tattoo Expo

September 10 (Dixon): Just when you thought the summer of 2016 couldn’t have been any better Renegade Classics and Iron Steed Harley-Davidson put the cherry on top of your summer riding and fun. Bikes of all kinds came roaring into the Dixon Fairgrounds for another year of kick-ass biker style fun. The hot spot for bike builders, tattoo artist, music, biker games, stunt riders and lots of sexy ladies bearing nothing up top but a really wild masterpiece of body painting by world-renowned artist Pashur. Lots of vendors available with lots of motorcycle stuff, tattoo stuff…and just plain stuff. The Easy Street Band and The Terry Sheets Band kept the crowd entertained with high energy rock’n country sound. The Custom Bike Showcase presented by Lucas Oil where 8 of the Top Bike Builders go head to head for $2,000 purse money. Walking into the Denverton Hall which was transformed in the Lucas Oil Showroom was like going to England to meet the queen, and attitude of to-

tal respect for the builders and their bikes. James Dean of James Dean Rebel Design, Phil Cannon of Loose Cannon, Jim Giuffra of AFT Customs, Jeff Nickells of Nickells Custom, Ray Sweeten of Gear Heads Motorcycle Shop, Turrtle Smith of Bagger Design, Paul Binford of Binford Custom Cycles, Gino Pilolla of Victory Motorcycles of Citrus Heights, Mark Baldridge of Sykotoc Industries. The overall winner…Phil Cannon of Loose Cannon. In the Madden Hall, the Tattoo Expo once again was filled with some of the finest tattoo artist that Northern California has to offer. Spike TV’s season 7 winner of Ink Master Anthony Michaels was there to support the show and of course to check out the new ink being laid by these outstanding artist. The tattoo contest was open to all. There were 7 categories: bar and shield, full back, full sleeve, portrait, black and grey, full color and best of show. An Art Fusion and live auction of the finished pieces benefited local children charities. There were 11 bike categories for the Ride In Show to accommodate every kind of motorcycle: Sportster, FXR, Dyna and V-rod, Softails, Touring, Pre-1980, Trikes, Indian, Victory, Metric Cruiser, Bullet Bike, Special Construction along with special trophies for Judge’s choice, Best of Paint and Best of Show. Bill Holland of Executive Choppers was on hand to judge these outstanding entries.

No biker event is complete without biker games; this year’s game was the weenie bite. Hot, loud and sexy! The object is for their skimpily clad passenger to bite off as much of the hanging hot dog as the motorcyclist rides slowly under the hanging weenie. No stopping once the biker starts the run and no feet down are allowed until he has passed the hanging weenie…Timing and bite skills are needed to win this game. The biggest weenie biter wins. The weather in Dixon is always hot…but not near as hot as the ladies entered into the highly anticipated Renegade Rendezvous Bikini Contest. Cameras were flashing and a large crowd gathered (and I do mean a large - packed in like sardines - type of crowd) all would hoot and holler as the girls came up on the stage. The girls knew how to entertain the crowd with seductive and sexy dance moves while also collecting a flurry of 5-10-20 dollar bills from an appreciative crowd…The mon-

ey collected was the purse along with a trophy to the winning beauty. Seductive entertainment at its finest. New to the Renegade Rendezvous was Unknown Industries on hand to bring the crowd to their feet with some outrageous riding. Buddy Suttle, Nick Leonetti and Kade Gates really tore the road to shreds as they wheelied, burnt out and even threw in an impromptu race between three bikes around cones sliding sideways as they navigated the turns all the while showcasing great skill and control as they were all sliding through the corner fighting for position. It was really fun to watch! A big shout out to the event sponsors Iron Steed Harley-Davidson, Renegade Classics Outlet Stores, Lucas Oil, Geico Motorcycle, Coors Light, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys for partnering up to make this once again Northern California’s #1 Bike Show and Tattoo Expo! Yep, it was another kick-ass Renegade Rendezvous to put in the book of memories. See ya next year! Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebey of T3 Design Studio. T

he 1960’s brought us what was probably the flashiest, most forward customization movement in motorcycle history…a movement that continues to this day. It introduced us to some amazing names in the industry that will surely never cease to amaze, be you a motorcycle fanatic or not. But while the 60’s were all about flare, the 70’s brought us some major changes, as well as some significant names out of Japan that would latch on to American motorcycle culture and ride on into the present as standard household names. By 1970 there are approximately 2.8 million motorcycles registered in the United States, so who wouldn’t want to try and get a piece of the American pie?

First let’s touch on what Harley-Davidson is doing during the decade at hand. H-D Motorcycles was still under the reign of AMF at the time, but that doesn’t mean that they were stagnant. To kick off the 70’s, Harley introduced the XR-750 for Class C racing…a Sportster based motorcycle which they continued to update and improve upon throughout the duration of the decade. 1971 was the first year for the FX1200 SuperGlide – a combination of a Sporty front end and the frame and power train of the FL series. The SuperGlide opened the door for an entirely new class of motorcycle…the Cruiser. In 1977, H-D makes a very public debut of its FXS Low Rider in Daytona Beach, and later the same year releases Willie G. Davidson’s dynamic version of the Sportster, the café racer. Willie’s bike was only in production for two short years and was deemed “a sales flop” due to its lethargic performance, but eventually became a collector’s item. The FXEF Fat Bob bounces onto the scene in ’79… appropriately named for its dual gas tanks and bobbed fenders. So while Harley was certainly not the motorcycle company making leaps and bounds at this time, they certainly didn’t stop growing their ever blooming family tree.

Perhaps the biggest change in American motorcycle history in the United States that occurred was the addition of so many Japanese bikes to the mix. While many manufacturers both large and small took their shot at both the racing scene and general riding population, we will keep our focus on the four major Japanese manufacturers who jumped in to American culture with both feet….and managed to find and KEEP their place in American motorcycle history. First and foremost to enter and succeed in the United States is Honda. Honda entered the US motorcycle world like a bat out of hell….and just kept on flying. As with many Japanese motorcycle companies, Honda offered models that were superior examples of well-crafted machines. They were very popular in the racing world, and for good reason. The Honda “70” was one of the world’s first small 4 stroke, small capacity motorcycles with an engine displacement of only 72 cc. It sported a triangular speedometer and a maximum calibration of 60 mph…Honda constantly upgraded and modified this model. In addition to the “70”, Honda introduced America to the CL100, and the XL250. When it appeared, the XL250 was the first modern 4 stroke enduro motorcycle, as well as the first mass produced 4 valve model. It was deemed an “enduro” because of its dual purpose…it shared many characteristics of a dirt bike, but at the same time was street legal, and intended for both on and off road use. An interesting aspect of the bike was its narrow streamlining…they were only 12” at their widest point (excluding the handlebars). The CBX was released during the 70’s as well, and was classified as a Superbike. The late 70’s Honda brought its CX series to the table…a monumental accomplishment, considering these models boasted liquid cooling, electronic ignitions, and dual CV type carburetors. But of all the models Honda introduced us to (and yes, there are

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 26

more) the last model I will mention is a very familiar name. Honda’s touring motorcycle premiered in 1974…. the Goldwing. It was introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show that October, and proceeded to make itself at home around the world. Over the course of its history, the Goldwing has had numerous changes and upgrades, with most of its sales being made in the United States. Next in line to try their hand in America was Kawasaki. These guys were hot on the tails of Honda, and all in when it came to competition. During the 1970’s Kawasaki introduced Americans to several noteworthy models. The S1 Mach1 was a direct result of their previous model (the H1 MachIII 500 cc) and was in every aspect a 3 cylinder 2 stroke upgrade. They also produced the Mach1’s big brother for a short two years…a larger version of the Mach1 with a displacement of 346 cc. Kawasaki also produced the Z1 in response to Honda’s CB750…the Z1 helped to popularize the in-line, cross-frame four cylinder, which would become well known as the “Universal Japanese Motorcycle”. This model was also noted for combining numerous elements previously available on other motorcycles into a single bike, and at the time was the most powerful Japanese 4 cylinder 4 stroke ever marketed…factory direct it had a maximum speed of 130 mph. Not too shabby if I say so myself. Kawasaki continued to upgrade models and added water cooling and shaft drives in the 70’s, always maintaining advanced, and above all, FAST motorcycles. Suzuki and Yamaha joined the Japanese quest for American domination in the 70’s as well. While Yamaha models were somewhat scarcer than that of Honda and Kawasaki, they did have some pretty cool selling points of their own. The engines were air cooled, parallel twins that were even offered in a six speed version in some markets. Another interesting aspect of Yamaha bikes was that all models came equipped with “Autolube” automatic oil injection, re-

lieving the user from the need to mix gasoline and two-stroke oil. One noteworthy point about these bikes…they were far different from Honda’s approach with the dual purpose enduros…Yamaha models varied immensely between street bikes and racing motorcycles. In fact, the frames alone on street models like the RD350 were often upwards of twice the weight of racing model frames. Suzuki brought us an initial lineup consisting of the GT380 (the Sebring), GT550 (the Indy), and the GT750 (the LeMans). These bikes offered piston-ported two stroke engines featuring Crankcase Cylinder Injection (PosiForce)…essentially a multi-point oil injection system. The 380 and 550 engines were air cooled and marketed as “Ram Air” by Suzuki. The 750 differed from the previous models in that it was liquid cooled and was nicknamed “the water buffalo” in the US, and also featured dual disc brakes up front (another big “first” for Suzuki). So apparently the Japanese need to be thanked for more than Geishas and sushi…who knew they would create such a surge in competition in the motorcycle industry. Japanese manufacturers pushed the industry and encouraged American manufacturers to step up and polish their chrome if you will. So, I will be the first to say it….thank you Japan, for kicking our ass...We certainly needed someone to light a fire under our somewhat dormant carcasses and regroup. The 1980’s brought us shoulder pads and highly flammable hairdos…but it also brought us some pretty cool modernizations to our cherished two-wheeled cohorts. Next time we will check out what this decade brought to the table…besides the Rubiks cube. Articles and photos contributed by Melanie Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa

22 ANNUAL STREET V ND

Stiltwalkers on Virginia St

September 21-25 (Reno / Carson City / Virginia City, Nevada): TRM NorCal rolled into Reno, Nevada on Wednesday afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised to see the amount of rally goers that were also arriving mid-week. It was apparent by Friday that this rally was shaping up to be one of the biggest - if not THE biggest Street Vibrations to date! As a matter of fact, according to early predications the fall rally this year was expected to pump millions into the local economy! Making this happen at the helm was Randy Burke of Roadshows Inc. along with an eager crew on hand to ensure that this would be a great experience for the anticipated 50,000 attendees.

Road Rider of Reno

Street Vibrations is such a popular rally with numerous events happening in the surrounding area that you would really have to ‘work at’ NOT having fun...and who would want to do that?! For starters, Northern Nevada has some of the best riding available with our world famous Lake Tahoe and its scenic roads only 45 minutes away! Besides the outstanding riding, Street Vibes is one huge party that spans a wide amount of ground from the vendor area in Downtown Reno to Chester’s Harley-Davidson and Road Rider and Street Rider of Reno along with the Throttle Girl off of Hwy 395 with more vendors and live music. Happening south of Reno (across Washoe Valley) in Carson City, were more vendors and good times to be had with its huge outside beer garden at Battle Born Harley-Davidson. On Thursday afternoon, a number of us were caught out in the rain while at the dealership which made the new bar located inside the dealership - a popular spot for some of us to wait for the rain clouds to pass over. (We later heard from folks making their way over the summit about this same time that were getting pelted with a few snowflakes!) One day of moisture was just enough to knock down the dust with the remainder of the weekend providing perfect riding temps for a fall rally! Battle Born Harley-Davidson entertained rally crowds with stunt riders from the Out Here Crew along with high flying motorcycle acrobatics by Fast Moto X Freestyle team. They also have a huge stage with live music all weekend long, this place was buzzing with activity.

As if that is not already enough to do there is still Virginia City! A trip to Street Vibrations is not complete without a visit to Virginia City. It is a great ride to get up there and once you put your kickstands down, you quickly realize that this is party central for the rally! There were bikers rolling up and down Main Street and strolling ten deep on the sidewalks with bikers adorned with Mardi Gras beads. People come to see the bikes and to see brave biker babes earn some beads. TRM NorCal made our way up on a Saturday afternoon; and you have got to give it to the Storey County Police who once again did an outstanding job of dealing with the crowd. And they did so in a manner that didn’t damper all the fun. (Come to think of it...these guys could fund their entire department by training other LE’s on ‘how to effectively deal with large, yet fun-loving biker crowds’. Next time we’re in town, we’ll be by to pick up our consulting fee - just sayin’). Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 30

The new old school

VIRGINIA CITY

For a few years now, I have been riding to Virginia City from Sacramento for Street Vibrations. This year, however, the H-D Gods had a different plan for me. Battery dead…… Check book empty…… So, unstoppable me, I drove. Yes, lame… but I was there. I joined up with my friend and we drove up through the winding roads of Highway 50 through Tahoe and Carson City to the little town of Virginia City, where the crowds awaited. Let the party start!!! After speaking with some people, I heard that Stan and Terry were somewhere near the Bucket of Blood, but I never met up with them. But, instead, I met up with some other very lovely people who were kind enough to let me “shoot” them. Please enjoy my tribute to the people who came from near and far to make the Virginia City/ Street Vibration event a wild-crazy-superfun-boobie-bearing good time! DENVER CHOPPERS VINTAGE BIKE SHOW

Mondo Porras (Denver Choppers) and Les Covington (Covington’s MC Shoppe) teamed up to bring Street Vibrations Fall Rally a NEW vintage bike show to remember by showcasing some of the nicest old school bikes on the west coast. The Reno Ball Room is a large building that was more than half full with the hottest old school bikes imaginable coming from Nevada, California and Oregon. This was a must-see display especially if you enjoy the heritage and history of motorcycling in America. The top three winners received a beautiful handcrafted trophy by Les Covington and Michelle Avery at the award ceremony on Saturday evening. Mondo and Covington thanked the following sponsors for making this bike show possible: Lucas Oil, Drag Specialties, Biltwell Products, Custom Dynamics, Rivera Primo and Paughco for their donation of a chopper frame and springer front end to the Best of Show winner – “Aliens Poison” from Ryan Grossman of Martinez, CA. People’s Choice award went to Stacy McCleary of Manteca, CA who also received a LED lighting kit from Custom Dynamics. A special highlight of this show was the David Mann “The Mann Kind” Award given out by Dave Mann’s widow - Jacquie Mann. Jacquie viewed photos of all the bikes on display and chose the bike that most resembled a “Dave Mann-style” motorcycle. She was on the phone through the stage speakers so we all could hear her choose the winning bike. And the winner was.... Billy Alexander of Cotati, CA with his 44 Knucklehead named “Selene”. Billy pocketed a cool grand and a gift package from Jacquie along with it. Congratulations to all the winners! On Friday and Saturday night at The Sands Regency Casino, things were starting to warm up although the sun had gone down as the entertaining and talented John Dawson Band took the stage. John really knows how to keep a crowd on their toes; he was hysterically funny in between songs as he flirted with the young lady alongside the stage getting her body painted in front of the ever growing crowd. But honestly, that was a just a teaser for what was coming up at The Sands. First the International Bikini Team took the stage on Friday night to crown Miss Street Vibrations 2016. As votes were cast, it was Rebecca Abbitt from San Diego reclaiming top honors for the second year in a row. Up next, it was time for the highly anticipated wet t-shirt contest which had everyone on the edge of their seats!

36TH ANNUAL FRYED BROTHERS ANNIVERSARY BASH

September 9-11 (Leggett): After a week of pre-ride jitters and packing and repacking at least four times, we were finally on our way to Leggett, California – home of the Redwood River Resort. The 36th Annual Fryed Brothers Anniversary Party was finally upon us with a weekend filled with amazing music provided not only by the Fryed Brothers, but other awesome bands like the Backyard Blues Band, Beatnik, Chubbs Brothers, The Kent Stephenson Band, and Rogue. It was set to be three days jam packed with fun. Not only were the bike games a huge success thanks to Lori Powell, Pat Grech and Doug Wilcox, but the chili cookoff provided an excellent dinner to all those who judged. I would know because I judged, and let me just say in addition to the chili being amazing, it was also extremely filling. A huge shout out also goes to the food vendors who contributed, so thanks to Pinky’s Eats and Treats and Harry’s Weiner(sp) Waggin’. Not only did Harry Fryed unveil his wiener cart, he gave us all a surprise when he pulled out two matching hotdog costumes to go with his cart! And just in case you were wondering, yes the hotdogs were delicious. When I started coming to this event ten years ago, I had

always helped out by selling raffle tickets, which was a lot of fun to do, running around meeting all kinds of different people, and of course mooching food. This year however, I got to see how hard everyone truly worked backstage. Whether it be the t-shirt booth, raffle booth (which is where I was happily stationed most of the time), the Grandfathers M/C who provided security, or even the sound guy, everyone was busy 24/7. Just like the people who were behind the anniversary party are amazing, the people in attendance were also cool to hang out with. I couldn’t tell you the amount of times that my dad disappeared only to come back and brag to me about how much free food he was offered. (And of course ate.) Thinking back on it, I can already tell that the 36th Annual Fryed Brothers Anniversary Party is going to be one that everyone remembers. I know I will. Thanks to everyone in the Fryed family for putting on an awesome party. See you next year. Article and photos contributed by Lexi Coss. Additional photos contributed by Forrest Coss

ROAD DOG CYCLE Recently we rode to a small Stanislaus County railroad town south of Modesto off of Highway 99 called Denair. We had heard about Road Dog Cycle (www.RoadDogCycle. com) but had never been there so we stopped on in for a visit. We were completely blown away by the huge volume and wide variety of new and used motorcycle parts and accessories available in this large 2 story corner store. We’re here to tell you that if you are looking for parts for a project bike or just to maintain the one you ride – you would consider this place worth the drive/ride because it is a gold mine! Road Dog Cycle has aisles and aisles of used motor parts, transmissions, frames, wheels, bars, exhaust pipes and anything else you could possibly need! Keep this place in mind and remember the emphasis is on “find”...as most of these items are relatively “organized in crates” but it will be up to you locate the item you might be searching for within these crates! During our visit, Joey, the store manager escorted us through a maze of used parts. It was hard to concentrate as my own wheels were turning once I quickly realized that this place was a great resource for parts for that project old school chopper that I’ve been dreaming of building. (Editor’s Note: ...and he will continue to keep on dreaming about it...J). During our tour of the Road Dog Cycle store and service area, we met up with the store owner Bob Holloway. Bob took TRM NorCal on an exclusive and extended tour across the street to their recently expanded new shop - Road Dog Tires where you can get tires for all your 4 wheel vehicle needs; and also a new business that will specialize in custom build hot rods. By the end of our tour, it was apparent that we had covered an entire city block on Main Street with more plans for growth in the works. During our interview, TRM NorCal learned that Bob who is a lifelong motorcycle rider had started his business some 35 years ago by going to swap meets to find parts that his customers would need. After several years of doing this, Bob had outgrown his garage and moved his business to its current location at 4600 Main Street in Denair. In 2008, the Holloway family was forced to shut the business down due to some unforeseen issues with the federal government. Now eight years later, Bob and his crew have put that all behind them and have reopened Road Dog Cycle for business in 2015 and have been going strong ever since. Bob muses that it’s just like the Grateful Dead Truckin’ song “what a long, strange trip it’s been” but Road Dog Cycle is back in the same location along with the same wide variety of used old school parts and accessories that they’ve always had. So come on back in to Road Dog Cycle and let them help you with your motorcycle parts needs as they are sure to have exactly what you are looking for. Oh and while you are at it, you can pick up the newest issue of Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. Article by Stan and Terri Hill Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 43

1st Annual Smoke & Iron MC

9/11 Ride To Never Forget Poker Run

September 11 (Auburn): It was fitting that Smoke and Iron Firefighters MC organized this poker run to benefit local Firefighter Widows and Orphans Fund as a reminder to all that we must never forget the significance of September 11th 2001. It was perfect riding weather in NorCal as the group started out from C&E Auburn Indian & V-Twin on a 125 mile run with poker stops along the way at The Tumbleweed Bar and Grill (Rancho Cordova), Olivehurst Fire Station, Stassis Tavern (Marysville) and the final stop at the VC (Penryn). Smoke and Iron Firefighters MC along with their volunteers did an outstanding job putting this run on as well as providing some very nice raffle items to give away also. Food was provided along with a live band and the ride was lead and later emcee’d by none other than MMA Champion Dave Badman Huckaba who kept both the ride and the raffle moving right along! The entire day was a really good time and a fun ride! Sure hope that this becomes an annual tradition. Article and photos by Stan Hill

Ramspur Winery Santa Rosa Mile

September 24-25 (Santa Rosa): It was time for the much anticipated Ramspur Winery Santa Rosa Mile Weekend presented by Triumph (www. santarosamile.com). The fun got started on Saturday afternoon with a race pre-party and later that evening it was race time! Pro short track racers got the ball rolling followed by the Hooligans and the Experts on the short track. On Sunday, the big bikes came out to play on the mile long track at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa with the AMA Pro Awards Banquet later that evening. This would not be possible without the great community support and the sponsors that step up to help make this all possible big thanks to Specialty Fabrication Incorporated, CFTA, Knauf Insulation, CertainTeed, Rod Lake Racing, Covestro, Motion Pro, SDI Insulation Inc and AMA Pro Flat Track. Sunday was a big deal for Indian Motorcycles and Grand National Champion Joe Kopp. At 47 years old the legendary racer came out to stretch his abilities to the fullest and take a win in the Dash for Cash race which drove the crowd literally wild at the Santa Rosa Mile! If you were there you would have been out of your seats standing up and screaming along with hundreds of others at every turn. Later TRM NorCal would

learn from Joe who is the Indian factory rider that the new Indian Scout FTR750 (the first Indian since 1950’s to race on the flat track) handled superbly in the corners and he could not believe the power it had coming out of the turns and down the straightaway. Joe said he wanted to see what this new Indian could do and from where TRM NorCal was standing, we could see him pulling away from everyone and no one could keep up with him. What a race and a great way to welcome Indian Motorcycles back to Flat Track Racing! After the exciting conclusions of the heat races and semi mains - it was time for the main events! While on his H-D Brad Baker #6 won the main event going away - there was another race (within the race) for the points championship between Bryan Smith #42 on his Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Jared Mees #1 on his Harley- Davidson 750. It was Smith’s 2nd place finish over Mees in 3rd insured Smith of the Points Championship and the battle kept the whole place on the edge of their seats. The GNC2 Main Event was won by Bryan Wells #1 Kawasaki, racing since he was 3 years old and accompanied by his immediate family from upstate New York. He loves racing and makes his living at it. I think we will be seeing allot more from

him in the future of his racing career. This was a very exciting weekend of racing and we cannot wait for the return of this series next season so keep your eyes peeled for the big bikes to roll back into Northern California with the Sacramento Mile and the Santa Rosa Mile in 2017 we are already on the edge of our seats. Unfortunately as motorcycle riders, we all understand the inherent risks that are involved and when you bring in the competitive spirit and the sheer speed of racing accidents will sometimes occur. Although it is extremely rare, we all are

aware that serious injury or worse can happen. The entire racing community was rocked with the loss of #35L/Charlotte Kainz (Wisconsin) and #99A/Kyle McCrane (Pennsylvania). Both racers succumbed to injuries after accidents while doing what they truly loved to do - race their motorcycles. TRM NorCal expresses our sincere condolences to both of the families and their friends. Article contributed by Nad Parham. 17th Annual Sarah Renee Phillips Memorial Scholarship Run August 27 (Vacaville): Middle school classmates of Sarah Renee Phillips created a memorial garden at Nelson Park among eucalyptus trees for their friend whose young life was cut short in April 2000 at the age of 13. Today Sarah’s Garden is caringly maintained by Kim Woodside (along with the help of Kevin and Max). For the past 17years Glenn Phillips honors his daughter’s memory with a motorcycle run. The run benefits a scholarship fund that Glenn Phillip’s family established at the high school that Sarah would have attended - Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville. It was a beautiful day to honor Sarah and help another young person achieve their academic goals. The ride starts at Miss Darlas (Vacaville) with a brief stop and prayer across town at Sarah’s Garden. Additional stops were to Judy’s Wild Wrangler Saloon (Vacaville), Buckhorn Bar & Grill (Dixon), Road Trip Bar and Grill (Capay) with the final stop at the Moose Lodge #1967 (Vacaville) for a BBQ, raffle and music by Savannah Blue. Memorial runs are emotional and meaningful for loved ones and it is important

for us to show our support as friends. In the words of Rose Kennedy…It has been said, “time heals all wounds”- I do not agree. The wounds remain, in time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone. Article and photos by Terri Hill

I will never hear church bells ringing again without smiling. Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent’s house to visit with her 95-year-old grandmother and comfort her. When she asked how her grandfather had passed away, her grandmother replied in her sweet, soft voice, “He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning, dear”. Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble. “Oh, no, my dear”, replied granny. Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to make love was when the church bells would start to ring. It was the perfect rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous....simply in on the ding and out on the dong. She paused to wipe away a tear and looked up at Katie, “He’d still be alive if that f***ing ice cream truck hadn’t come along!”. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------So I finally landed a job as a Smart-Mart greeter, which is a good find for many retirees, unfortunately I lasted less than a day. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her

two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Per my greeter training manual I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Smart-Mart.” “Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The hateful woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they aint twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you need glasses, or are you just plain stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither in need of glasses nor stupid, madam. I just literally could not believe someone actually slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at SmartMart.” My Supervisor said I probably wasn’t cut out for this line of work. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Two bikers; Buster and Bodie rode into a gas station in Kentucky for a fill-up because they heard about a contest being offered by the station to patrons who purchased a full tank of gas. When they went inside to pay, the guys asked the attendant about the contest. “If you win, you’re entitled to free sex” said the attendant. “How do we enter?” asked Buster. “Well, I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right, you win free sex.” “OK. I guess 7,” said Bodie. “Sorry, I was thinking of 8,” replied the attendant. The next week, the two buddies go back to the same station to get gas. When they went inside to pay, Buster asked the attendant if the contest was still going on. “Sure,” replied the attendant. “I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right you win free sex.” “2” said Buster. “Sorry, I was thinking of 3,” replied the attendant. “Y’all come back soon and try again.” As they walked back to their bikes, Bodie said to Buster, “You know, I’m beginning to think this contest is rigged.” “No way,” replied Buster. “My wife won three times last week.”

R

ecently, I went for a ride on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the Sierra foothills. I fueled up early in the morning and figured I would ride until the afternoon to grab lunch whenever I stopped. It was an unplanned ride so I figured I would just ride until I felt the grumbling in my stomach and that would be my time clock to find a place to eat. It was such a beautiful day with white puffy clouds, a slight breeze, and a projected 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the forecast. I worked all week and this would be a great stress reliever for me to shake off the stress of my everyday tasks that weigh me down. Nothing could ruin my day, as riding is better than any day working. Right? After riding a hundred plus miles or so, I felt the grumbling start like a jack hammer in my gut. It was time to stop and grab some grub. I was craving a burger, some fries and a coke. I call that my all American meal and the fall back lunch I usually revert to when on the road. I see a little diner up ahead and pull the bike into the first spot I see. I am so looking forward to this burger, I can barely stand it. I figured I would relax for an hour and take my time enjoying my meal, check my messages, and just kickin’ back. Then it happened. The waitress came up to me with a sour puss look on her face and said, “What do you want”? I replied with, “a menu would be nice and maybe a glass of water with lemon”. Without a word, she turned around, walked to the front, grabbed a menu and a cup of water then dropped both off in front of me. I said, “Excuse me, but I would like a lemon for my water”. “Oh yeah”, she said, “I’ll check to see if we have any left”. I knew I was in for a very unpleasant experience with halfhearted service. She finally made it back to my table and asked again, what I wanted. I placed my order for my all American meal and smiled with nothing received return. After that, I just prayed my burger would come straight from the grill to my table with no added features introduced along the way. The burger finally made it to my table and I gulped it down in record time as I was really frustrated the way I was treated as a customer. I was going to say something until I noticed her treating every customer with the same rude behavior. When she finally brought my bill to the table, I stopped her

for a moment. I shared with her how great my day was going and I couldn’t help but notice how irritated she was with all the customers. She looked at me like she was going to be very irritated with what I said so I was already preparing my rebuttal. I then told her I was a pastor and shared with her that if she had anything burdening her that I would pray for her to try to help her have a better day. Her eyes filled with tears and through a quivering voice she explained that her week had been hell. Her Mother passed away a week ago, her car had a flat tire, she had to take a bus to work, and she had to pull a double shift on a Saturday while others were enjoying their day. I shared with her a similar story of a tough time I had gone through in my life. I shared with her a quote I learned a long time ago that reads, “This too shall pass”. I told her she would be stronger when she got to the other side and that I would pray for her and her situation. Here is the miracle, she smiled! She wiped the tears away and let the sun shine through her eyes. She stood a little taller, thanked me for coming in, and hoped to see me again. The point of the story is that just because someone is miserable on the outside does not mean their heart is not breaking on the inside. We are all just doing the best we can, and sometimes, we just need someone to stop and show they care. This Thanksgiving month, let us not take for granted all the blessings we have and the things we enjoy. We have a roof over our heads, a little money in our pockets, and a little food in the fridge. Remember there are those who have less. There are some that will struggle with no family to share the holiday with, no place to call home, and little or nothing to eat. Do not judge others by their initial reactions to you, but compliment them and make them smile. It will break down every barrier and begin to crack the burdens they carry. Happy Thanksgiving and we will see you soon at Thunder Road! 1 John 4:11 – Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

MY TWO CENTS: Just one of those days

You ever have one of those days where everything you touch ends up falling to the floor? Or you keep hurting yourself, or tripping over your own shit on the floor? Am I the only one who’s had one of those days? I was in my shop looking at a Road King with frame damage, I can see a bent down tube in the front and the neck is obviously bent to one side. No problem, that’s what I do, and this one is not really a big job, and the customer is in no hurry because he’s talking about building it this winter. Cool! I got time to work on the other bikes and they’ll all go on time. I go to move the Road King and sliced the palm on my right hand with a piece of ripped chrome. I sliced it pretty good and it kind of pissed me off. I cleaned and wrapped up my hand and cleaned the blood off the floor, because the shop looked like a murder scene. I decided to leave the Road King alone and work on another bike that didn’t piss me off. I started working on a Dyna that was already on my frame rack, and I grabbed the bottom of the frame and cut the shit out of my left bird flipping finger! To make matters worse I got a big ass metal sliver deep in the cut. Now I’m pissed off and I get some needle nose pliers and pull out most of the metal sliver and wrapped up my finger so I don’t get blood on everything. After I calmed down I go back to the Dyna and try to find out where the hell that sliver came from, and I’ll be dammed if I didn’t get another one, this time in my ring finger on the same hand! WTF?! Now I’m really pissed off and afraid to yell or say anything because the way things are going, I’ll probably bite my tongue or chip a tooth bitching about it! I got two hurt fingers on my clutch hand and a gash on the palm of my throttle hand and it’s not even twelve o’clock yet! And I’m wondering if I should even be here today? The rest of the day wasn’t much better. I bumped my head, poked my eye, scraped my knuckles and I kept dropping tools because of the metal splinters in my finger prints that I

can’t see, but I sure as hell feel em’! The end of the day finally rolls around and I’m grateful to be alive and still have my vision and all my fingers after the day I had, and can’t wait to get the hell out of here! I cleaned the shop, washed up and put sunscreen on like I do every day when it’s 100 degrees outside. I jump on my bike to leave, and laugh to myself because both hands are messed up, and they don’t hurt until I pull my clutch or use my front brake. No problem, who uses those anyway, right?! Once I got on the freeway I had a sigh of relief. This was the best I felt all day! That lasted for about 2 minutes. Traffic came to a crawl and I started splitting lanes. No problem, I do this every day, ow, wait a minute! Ow! I got freaking sunscreen in my eyes! Holy shit I can’t see! Now I gotta split lanes by feel or pull over to the shoulder of the freeway! I stopped on the side of the freeway and grabbed a bottle of water from my saddlebag, pop off my beanie helmet and poured water on the bottom of my long sleeve button down Harley shirt I was wearing. I soaked the bottom of my shirt and wiped the sunscreen out of my eyes. Once I was able to kind of see again while I was squinting, I realized I’m half on the shoulder of the road and half in the slow lane! The traffic was already slow and I’m screwing it up even more. Now I’m on the side of the freeway messing up traffic, with two bandaged fingers and a big bloody gauze pad taped on the other hand and it looks like I’m crying, and because my shirt’s wet it looks like I pissed in my pants! The icing on the cake is some lady I couldn’t see shouts “Push that piece of shit off the road!” I finally made it home without any more incidents, had a couple of shots, couple of beers, what a day! Now I ask you, am I the only one who’s had one of those days? That’s my 2 cents! Al Cagle. www.rackandpull.com
