S
pring has sprung in Northern California! The month of May kicks off Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month because typically we start to see more motorcycles out on the roadways. And although we really did not have much of a winter, this year it could have been moved forward to April as it has been spectacular riding conditions earlier this year. Now I wish that I could reach all the cagers that we share the roads with everyday; but because this publication encompasses subjects “about bikers and for bikers” - I would say that I would be preaching to the choir. However, I want to emphasis that this national dedication for motorcycle safety awareness month is not just for the folks that do not ride - but it’s for all of us. As riders, we can use this time to really think through how we ride. Have we picked up some bad habits that could put us at more risk? Are we thinking about how we are positioned in the lane of traffic to be more easily seen by cars preparing to turn left in front of you? Is it time that we brush up on our riding skills? Are we leaving room for the drivers out there to F-up, because one thing is for certain they will sooner or later and if you have not left yourself an out - there might not be a second chance available. The thing is that it really does not matter who is at fault in a car vs motorcycle accident because as we all know the car and its driver will come out with much less damage than us riders. In fact, the driver will probably be texting someone about the accident before we hit the ground. The point is that we have to take responsibility for our own safety on the road because people who do not ride will never understand why we do the things we do. And they will never see the road the same way that we do. So the way I see it the majority of the responsibility lands on our shoulders to make sure we make it home safely. Maybe it’s a good time to check out one of the areas advanced riders courses. Yeah, yeah…I know we are all skilled riders, but there just maybe techniques that we have forgotten over the years and an outside suggestion from an instructor might someday save someone’s bacon or at least some skin from road rash. Anyway, didn’t mean to preach here - just a reminder. Another friendly reminder out there to all of us don’t get so wrapped up planning your next ride that you forget about Mother’s Day on May 10th. Heck….maybe if you play your cards right – you can sweet talk her into going for a ride! And if you do…email us a photo at ThunderRoadsNorCal@yahoo.com. Now let’s get out and enjoy this great riding weather – see you on the road! Rock Hard – Ride FREE Ride Often Stan & Terry Hill

Meet Greg (COACH) Coppes CANDIDATE FOR STATE SENATE DISTRICT 3
J
ust imagine for a second having representation at the state capitol that has a vested interest in bikers issues? We have that opportunity right now with Greg (Coach) Coppes running as Republican for District 3 State Senate. District 3 covers all of Solano, Napa, 75% of Yolo, 8% of Contra Costa, less than 1% of Sacramento and 28% of Sonoma counties. The district is made up of 24% Republican and 48% Demorcrat. Coach has been a lifelong biker and grew up here in California in a biker family. He is a member of the ABATE PAC Committee and Political Director for Biker’s Rights Organization of California (BRO). I recently sat down with Coach to get a better idea of who he is and what he will bring to the table for ALL Californians. What I learned is that Coach is a strong advocate of Constitutional rights which the motorcycle community has long been on the frontline defending these rights as provided to us by the Bill of Rights and our Constitution which are constantly under attack. As an Air Force Veteran, Coach has a strong sense of duty to his country.
He is very aware that his life experiences have brought him to this point where he feels a strong need to serve his fellow Californians in a positive and constructive way. Over the last few months, I have learned that Coach is keenly aware of how the political machine at the state capitol works and is therefore better equipped to navigate within the system. In fact, he is already doing so as he sponsored AB334 (the Anti-Profiling Bill). Coach is responsible for putting together a bipartisan coalition with the help of Rodney Greiner and Nick Harris. This coalition included author of the bill Ken Cooley along with 7 other co authors to include Assembly Minority leader Beth Gaines demonstrating broad bipartisan support for the bill, showcasing his ability to bring support to issues from both sides of the aisle. This is a skill that is uniquely valuable in California. Keep in mind that AB334 is modeled after the law that has already passed in Washington; it has already shown to have made a very positive impact for the biker community in Washington with law enforcement being held accountable for their

2045, we must deal with the storage issues now, current conservation efforts are not going to get the water issues solved. After talking with Coach for awhile, it became apparent to me that his views are more Libertarian in nature in that his focus is on common sense solutions to issues that affect Californians in terms of access to economic opportunity and individual liberty whether the issues affect agriculture or the small motorcycle shop owner or the people that are employed by local businesses.

interactions with the biker community. Beyond that there are many more issues that if we pull together and get Coach elected that the biker community will benefit by have representation from a senator that understands biker’s issues. Coach points out that the biker community does not have enough votes to get any individual elected on our own, but we do have enough potential votes to change the balance in any election in the State of California. Coach is also very knowledgeable on many other very important California issues. The big topic is about water and how it should be allocated, but more importantly how to ensure that California can resolve its storage problems so that we do not run short on water in drought years that are inevitable in this climate. Coach has some very compelling ideas to get us back on track with insuring that we are storing enough water for all of our needs. He accurately points out that the water problems are largely caused by political differences. Coach suggest that we look at water storage from a 5 year cycle because over a 5 year cycle we get more water than we need if we had better plans on how to store it because as we all know - some years we have more than we can store and other years not nearly enough. Here are a few things I learned by listening to Coach talk about water issues. For one the state figures that each Californian uses 50 gallons a day. This number is completely inaccurate and woefully underestimates the actual needs to subside. For example just looking at the food we consume daily 1 stick of butter takes 500 gal., 1 grape ½ gal, 1 pound of beef 5,000 gallons. Does not take a math genius to quickly realize that the 50 gallon a day number is just completely off the mark. Now consider that the population in the state is expected to be double what is now sometime between 2040 and
As a veteran Coach is working on another piece of legislation that shows just that kind of thinking. AB321 being carried by Assemblyman Rocky Chavez will provide tax relief to all active duty Californians making them exempt from California state tax. In addition AB321 will extend the tax exempt status for one year after the veteran has returned to civilian life and stays and works here in California. This will help immensely with the very expensive transition back to civilian life and provides incentive to retain the most productive future leaders and contributors to our communi-

is how the few control the many. Close to half of district is not even in the game which leaves the door wide open for us to show our strength by registering and voting and supporting his campaign. This map shows the area covered by District 3; but keep in mind that it doesn’t matter what district you reside in - you can still support this campaign as we all stand to benefit. This is an opportunity to really show that the biker community can come together and have a real voice at the state capitol. How can you help? First of all, you must be a registered voter. Otherwise our opinion does not count – and like it or not, that is just how it works. Secondly, but just STOP BY FOR A TEST RIDE. as important is we need to help Coach show that his Summer is coming, are run for State Senate has a you ready? lot of support. portant thing is that we show lots of support. It is an unfortunate reality that running for any office is a very expensive proposition, so any help is much appreciated. To put in perspective in the last election for District 3 a little over 352 thousand people voted. If the campaign were to send 1 flyer to each voter costing a dollar each you’re looking at $353,000 just to do that. His campaign needs to raise $40,000 by June. Go to https:// www.efundraisingconnections.com/c/GregCoppes/ to make a donation and show the other representatives at the state capitol that the biker community is willing to put their money where their mouth is. Become a Facebook friend with Greg Coppes - you will be able to follow along with his progress as well as information on upcoming meetings you might want to attend. E-Z BRAKE/E-Z SHIFTER
A
s I was riding home from San Jose after working there all day, it was lane spitting time of day as rush hour was unavoidable. It was a particularly rough commute that day and I ended up splitting lanes all the way back to Sacramento. Now I have a habit of covering my rear break as I ride like this just so I have the jump on any cage drivers that are not paying attention there is no wasted time hitting the brake. By the time I got home the muscle on the front of my shin was sore from holding my toe up for 3 hours. A few days later, Dave the owner of E-Z Brake contacted TRM NorCal and I admit that after checking out his web site (www.E-Zbrake.com) I thought that I might have found the solution to my shin problem. Think about it, the brake position on Harley-Davidson touring bikes has room for improvement. Personally, I noticed the difference immediately after installing the E-Z Brake on my bike. Wow! The E-Z Brake moves the brake pedal forward a bit and down closer to the floor board. Now I no longer have to pick my foot up and move it from under the pedal to apply the brake; now it is just a short lift of my toe and I am there. There is more free space for your foot on the floor board and also will reduce reaction time in a must-stop situation. As a bonus the chrome finish is immaculate and looks way better on my bike, huge improvement. E-Z Brake also has a special product to fit the newer water cooled Ultra that has the radiators in the lower fairings, E-Z Brake has a special brake lever just for that popular model.
Now we did not stop there - on the other side of the bike they have a fix there as well. E-Z Shifter extending the front shifter more over the floor board while the rear shifter arm is longer and flatter. This allows the rear shifter to be set lower and further back out of the way of your foot unless you want it and the narrow shift lever allows it to slide between the floorboard and the primary so you do not have to pick your foot up completely off the floor board to reach it with your heel. I like to ride without the heel shifter, they have a slick set up for that as well with a chrome spacer that is spring loaded to bring the front shift leaver out to the outside of the splined shaft. Again this brings the shifter further out from Thunder Roads Magazine速 Northern California 8
the side of the bike for more comfortable access and leaves you with a much cleaner finish than if you just put a chrome cap over the end of the spline. Each product comes with easy to follow installation instructions that are also available at www.E-Zbrake.com. All of the components are top notch quality material made in America for your American bike. I’ll be the first to say that this has been a huge improvement to my bike and I wish I had both of these great products on my ride along time ago. Article and photos by Stan Hill

Tech Tips 2000-2007 Brake Caliper Rebuild
E
arly Harley-Davidson disc brakes were certainly an improvement over the old drum set-up, but they still left little to be desired. The single piston or “puck” caliper saw a few changes over the years. As always, the aftermarket recognized the need for a better product and the choices of two, four, and even six piston calipers became abundant. And as always, the Motor Company eventually caught on. Sure, it took them a few decades to get the ball rolling, but why rush into things? The point being that for the model year 2000 Mother Harley nailed it good. The four piston caliper was introduced and it worked like a champ. As with all things, sometimes a little TLC is required. If you notice your brake pads are not wearing symmetrically by this I mean either of the two pads can wear unevenly, or one pad is wearing out much faster than the other - this is indicative of pistons sticking and a caliper rebuild is necessary. Other symptoms include excessive brake lever travel where the seals are worn and cause the pistons to retract too far when the lever is released, or signs of brake fluid leakage around the inside of the caliper. Rebuilding the 00-07 caliper is fairly simple. Only one special tool is required. The JIMS #1162 Brake Caliper Piston Remover Tool. If you don’t happen to have one of these lying around then a suitable homemade device can be fabricated with some cardboard or thin plywood. Pretty much anything to cushion the rapidly exiting pistons upon the application of some low pressure air (more on that in a bit). To start, remove the caliper from the bike. Split the caliper halves and install the JIMS tool. Re-assemble the caliper with the tool installed and using a low pressure air nozzle apply air to the brake line port. The pistons will pop out enough to facilitate removal.
After disassembling the caliper and removing the tool, remove the pistons for cleaning and inspection. If there is any gouging/scoring replace them. Remove the old seals using a toothpick (don’t use anything metal). Clean the caliper bores thoroughly. Service literature dictates the use of denatured alcohol or the appropriate brake fluid for cleaning. Apply a skin coat (very light) of silicone grease to the pistons and seals in accordance with the service manual. Install the new seals and press the pistons back into their respective bores until they are flush. Don’t forget the o-rings in the cross over ports! Reassemble the caliper and install your new brake pads. Install the caliper on the bike using new banjo fitting seals/washers and bleed the system. After a thorough test ride re-inspect the caliper for leaks. That’s it! This is a very inexpensive repair and for those mechanically inclined certainly falls into a do-it-yourself job. Ride safe!

No One Could Steer Them Right – but Mama Fryed, Mama Fryed

Exclusive Interview with Gerry Freidenfelt
here is always a certain family in the neighborhood – usually a family with several kids– a family where all the neighborhood kids go to hang out. A family that other the parents of these neighborhood kids are subconsciously thinking “with all their kids, what’s the difference if there are one or two more kids over there”? I am sure that you know of a family like this and if you grew up in near Sacramento’s Arden-Arcade neighborhood during the 60’s, this house belonged to the Freidenfelt family. Now fast forward to today… not a lot has changed at the Freidenfelt household. TRM NorCal was fortunate for an opportunity for a one-on-one interview with Gerry Freidenfelt, the matriarch of The Fryed Brothers legacy. Gerry is affectionately known to all - simply as Mama Fryed. During our interview, you could sense that Mama Fryed was surprised that she would be the focus of our interview. A modest lady to begin with Mama Fryed made us feel welcomed in her home instantly. She told us that her husband, Harry Sr. was a carpenter and built their Sacramento home for their growing family. Harry Sr. and Gerry Friedenfelt had seven children - four boys and three girls: Kim, Mark, Lynette, Barbara, Elaine, Harry Jr. and Tommy. Gerry was a stay at home mom while the kids were growing up; and it wasn’t until Tommy was old enough to attend school that she went to work for the State of California. However, for a few years she did manage the local tavern along with her husband where the historic Turn Verein Hall currently stands at 33rd and J Street in Downtown Sacramento- as if raising a household full of children wasn’t enough!? As she reminisced of this lifetime experience with a smile; she said that it was after an evening of drinking beer with his buddies that Harry Sr. woke her up only to inform her that “the bar was for sale…” - so “I bought it!” and “by the way, you have to go in the morning to open it up!!” Gerry replied – “you DID what?!?” And the next morning, that’s exactly what
she did! Seemingly un-phased, she simply asked her motherin-law to watch the kids and she went to open up their new bar! The bar business only lasted a few years before they found another ‘enthusiastic buyer’. Harry Sr. and Gerry loved music and singing, but never played any instruments themselves – instead they bought a used piano for their kids and signed them up for piano lessons. According to Gerry, Mark was the only one that “stuck with it” – and although Elaine never
Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 14
took lessons “she crawled up there and just started playing” and Harry Jr. only took two lessons. By the time, Mark was in his early teens he eventually saved enough money from cutting lawns to buy an electric guitar and Harry Jr. inherited his grandfather’s fiddle. Gerry said that she will never forget a moment during a class reunion that was when Harry Sr. proudly stood up to introduce himself – he said “my name is Harry Freidenfelt, I have seven children – four boys and 3 girls and MY BOYS ARE IN A BAND!” Before Harry Sr. passed away in 1998 – they would go dancing and to see the boys play as often as possible when they had a gig close to home. Gerry told us that “Four Roses” is her very favorite song on the Fryed Brothers playlist, but of the songs that her sons actually wrote – her favorites are “Church Bells” and obviously, “I Ride” which is close to Mama Fryed’s heart, as it to all Fryed Brothers fans. This song was originally a poem from Mark that he put to pen while he was on the road. It was about a note written by a young Tommy (age 7 or 8) to their mom after wrecking on his bicycle; this is the same poem that inspired Harry to turn it into the song we hear today. The end result is a shared collaboration from a talented musical family. It is also the inspiration for the film of the same name. During the early days with the band, Mark would have to sneak an under-aged Harry into bars. But they were given the parental stamp of approval because 1) these were paying gigs and 2) so they could play their music. I am sure the “don’t tell mom” shenanigans were just young men testing their limitations! And this is how it came to be...Mark and Harry would play at local bars and
taverns as The Freidenfelt Brothers, eventually becoming The Fryed Brothers because their name would be butchered during the band’s introduction…“Ladies and Gentlemen - here are the Fryednfuks or whatever their name is” It was also not long after this time when motorcycles became a part of the Fryed home scene with Kim and Mark often wrenching on, riding and sharing their experiences with their younger brothers - Harry and Tommy. Gerry recalls one afternoon when Mark surprised her with an impromptu ride in their neighborhood...hesitant and more concerned about the curlers that were in her hair, Mark eventually convinced his mom on what Gerry claimed was her first and ONLY ride on a motorcycle! Sadly the unimaginable happened, not once but three times as a parent, Gerry has endured the loss of three of her children Kim, Mark and recently Tommy. Her sons are gone but will never be forgotten as Gerry is surrounded and blessed with, as Harry Jr. would describe “a butt load” of grandchildren (15) and greatgrandchildren (12). As the Freidenfelt family matriarch, Mama Fryed raised a genuinely loving and caring close knit family and it shows throughout each generation. It is with her love, strength and subtle guidance that this family continues to carry on. The Fryed family continues to open their hearts and expand their welcome to friends and their friends to be a part of their extended family. And honestly, what does another few more matter, right? Thank you Mama Fryed and family for including the Thunder Roads NorCal crew into your family circle. Article by Terry Hill. Photos contributed by Forrest Coss and the Freidenfelt family album

Pisces Party March 14 (Eureka): The Pisces Party is a huge birthday celebration Dave with his sons visiting from WA for anyone whose birth date is between February 19 - March 29, all of which fall under the astrological sign of Pisces. And after 15 years of party planning, an adamant Dave Davis said there would not be another Pisces party. Fast forward 27 years later AFTER the LAST Pisces Party making it the 42nd annual, this party is still going strong in Humboldt County. Of course, ALL astrological signs are invited for a spaghetti feed, double elimination pool tournament, music and dancing to the Fryed Brothers Band at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall on H Street. The invites are old school with no fuss graphics, straight to the point, created by hand and composed by Dirty Dave himself. Dave is the party’s host and the proclaimed regional historian. Dave has filled several 3 ring binders with photos capturing memories and the lifestyle at biker events Dirty Dave Humboldt Historian dating back to the mid 70’s. Each binder is meticulously labeled to the corresponding years as he was the photographer on the scene. These binders are only available to partygoers curious enough to browse through four decades of photo albums. In fact some of these very photos had been previously submitted to the only biker publication on the newsstand in the 70’s, Easyriders Magazine - only to have them rejected for not using appropriate film necessary for print. Unfazed by their rejection, Dave Davis continues doing what he enjoys and that is taking photos of his biker friends and has become the likely historian of NorCal’s lifestyle on 2 wheels. Thanks for letting us share your birthday with you and your Pisces friends!

Eagle House Victorian Inn
During our travels, Thunder Roads NorCal was fortunate to stay in a historic Victorian Inn where BIKERS ARE WELCOME. Just 240 miles north of San Francisco and 100 miles south of Oregon is the Eagle House Victorian Inn (www.eaglehouseinn.com). The Eagle House Inn is majestically situated near the bay on the corner of 2nd and C Street in a newly renovated Old Town Historic District in Eureka, California not to be confused with Yreka which is 200 miles northeast. Eureka’s Eagle House Inn was built in 1886 and is among hundreds of historic Victorian buildings where the entire city of Eureka is listed as a state historic landmark. Since 1993, this stately 32,000 square foot Victorian Inn is owned by Tae “Lee” Cho and his wife, Kwan. We were warmly greeted by front desk manager, Beti who will enthusiastically provide inquiring guests with a wealth of knowledge about the area. There are several things to see and do during your stay in the area as the Eagle House Victorian Inn is surrounded by quaint restaurants and shops within walking distance along the bay’s water front. Although more conveniently located downstairs at street level is Gallagher’s Irish Pub and Restaurant which offers a wide variety of delicious menu choices along with a full service bar. And since covered parking is an anomaly in a region where precip is the norm, travelling
motorcyclists can rest assured that their rides will be covered during their stay as it is not uncommon to see several motorcycles parked on the grand ballroom floor inside this regal Victorian. Next time you’re on a road trip behind the Redwood Curtain, be sure to call Beti to make reservations (707) 444-3344 and tell her you read about it in Thunder Roads NorCal! She is a stay at home mom who finds the time to create her trademarked Tattoo-elry designs. With having many inspirations, she is truly inspired by many things ranging from a Michael Jackson album to classical or a classic rock album. She loves Harley-Davidson and high fashion. However, her biggest inspirations are people and life. Through this she has found herself designing and fabricating pieces of art and jewelry mainly using a metal medium. Angela best describes it as a blacksmith or a carriage house type of design. Most of her pieces are strictly metal but, she may also use other materials within her design. Whether it’s a ring, necklace, piece of art or body jewelry her unique vision can be seen throughout. “I find my metal formed into jewelry is raw and hard but somehow organic and elegant at the same time”. While using a range of garage like materials such as: metal tubing, wire or sheet metal she forms, brazes and finishes each piece by hand. “My passion is to create a one-ofa-kind, rare and wearable formation”. Angela, along with Leroy Krazyboy of Krazyboy Clothing and model Nikki Fritz have traveled to California attending the Love Ride foundation (for helping people less fortunate) presenting a 30th anniversary plaque to Grand Marshal Jay Leno and founder of the Love Ride Oliver Shokouh. She has also made jewelry for Mrs. Nancy Davidson and her daughter Karen of Harley-Davidson. MY TWO CENTS: Spring is here! Here we go. The time for ride and shine is here again! It’s not like we had much rain to speak of this winter, but the warm weather is here, and it looks like it’s here for the rest of the year. I figured the time is now to get my bike ready for the warm weather. I ride year round so it’s just regular maintenance. The other day I was in my garage enjoying a beer, listing to music and trying to muster up the energy to remove my front end and inspect my triple tree bearings. It’s been a while and when the bike was on the jack I noticed the fall away was real loose, and I could hear a clunking noise in the front end when I pull into my drive way and it sounds even worse when I ride off the sidewalk leaving the bar. So, there I am, drinking a beer and rocking out to good music, with one of the drawers open to my tool box, all the while thinking “I really don’t feel like doing this right now”. I walk over to my bike and move the handlebars from left to right and its obvious there’s too much play. I’m thinking my bike needs work but the sun is shining and it’s warm and dry outside and I know of a bar in the foothills that has cold beer. But do I really want to ride the twisty roads with a loose front end? Ah the hell with it! I break out the tools needed to take off the front end and I find an empty box to put the parts in. Then I do another lap around my bike. Just then Stan from Thunder Roads Magazine pulls up and we start shooting the shit and I grab him a beer and before you know it we’re walking around his bike pointing at different things sounding like we know want the hell we’re talking about. And to the average Joe walking by, we would have probably sounded like two Harley Davidson master technicians. But if a real master technician walked by he would have said “Boys, put down the beers and take your bikes to a real shop”. The time is rolling on and before you know it there are half a dozen empty beer bottles in my parts box, and no parts have been taken off the bike yet. Then my wife Diane comes into the garage with a bottle of whiskey and shot glasses
stacked three high, and now the open drawer on my tool box is a resting place for beer bottles and whiskey. I figure a couple more shots and I might be able to talk Stan into letting me take his bike apart for practice. He made it clear, that ain’t gonna happen. We’ll see about that, maybe after another shot. The drawer on the tool box is closed and all the tools are put away and now we’re sitting on the front porch. It’s well into the afternoon and it’s obvious I’m not going to work on Stan’s bike for practice. He made that real clear. It would be a safe bet the only thing I’m working on today is this beer. I know I should be working on my bike, but screw it! I’m not going for a ride today. I need a day of rest once in a while and today’s the day. My front end is not going to fall off sitting on a jack in my garage over night. I’m not the only one who’s had days like this and I’m not saying it was a bad day at all. I’m just saying I’m not the only one to put off maintenance and services because of one reason or another. That being said, get off your ass, put down the beer or whatever your vice is, and get your bike ready to ride. In the blink of an eye the warm riding weather will be here and you don’t want to miss any of it because you need a tire or your bike needs a little work to make it road worthy, or worse yet, you and your bike are on the side of the road waiting for Ambroz Motorcycle Towing as your friends are looking at you like you’re some kind of an asshole for trying to take that piece of shit motorcycle out for a ride when it should be in a shop or in a bunch of boxes! I know because I’ve ridden with a guy who waits to be on the road before he did any work on his bike because he knows we’ll do it for him, on the shoulder of the road. And he never carried any tools! So check your tires and shocks and get your bike ready to ride this summer! A good ride always ends with riding home. That’s my two cents. Ride like hell and talk to you soon! y story stems from growing up riding on the back of my Dad’s Harley which eventually led to me wanting to learn myself. My Dad of course was stoked about my desire to ride. My Dad loved to ride - I mean he REALLY enjoyed it. Unfortunately the very thing that brought him joy was the same thing that took him away from my family. On May 18, 2008 my Dad was killed while riding his Harley. Even as I type those words, I ‘m still in disbelief. His riding friends put together an annual ride in memory of him, called the “Hello Darlin Ride” down in Southern California - where I was raised. I’ve attended a few and always receive tons of offers to ride on the back with one of his friends. But I didn’t like the idea of riding on the back of some other man’s bike. I wasn’t trying to be a brat but the whole idea just didn’t sit well with me. Plus I was still very emotional at that time. I decided then I had no desire to ride with anyone. If I ever got back on a bike, it was going to be because I was the one riding. Of course I knew my emotional state wasn’t equipped to handle that any time soon. Flash forward five years, I had noticed I was reporting a lot of crashes involving motorcycles and motorcycle safety month was coming up. For the first time I felt I was ready to ride. KCRA loved the idea and ran a story on me taking the riding course etc. I’m proud to say I passed and I am licensed. However I haven’t done much riding since then. At the time I was living downtown with no where safe to park it. I’ve recently moved to a place that has a garage. But have decided I’d like to pay off my credit cards before purchasing a bike. My Dad would be proud of to know I’m being responsible with my finances. He always said, if you can’t pay for it in cash, or can’t pay off the entire balance of your credit card at the end of the month, well then you don’t need that right now. So for now a motorcycle falls under my luxury wish list. I know my financial

circumstance won’t always be this way and eventually I’ll be in a position to buy a bike. In the mean time, I’m proud of myself for never blaming the bike for his death, many people couldn’t believe it when I decided to ride and let me know how foolish and irresponsible I was. But in my mind, it’s called an accident for a reason. Sure I could have chosen to hate bikes and put all my focus on blaming the bike but I knew that wasn’t going to bring him back. My dad would be sad to hear if I started to feel that way. He too lost some close friends in bike accidents but never allowed that to detour him from riding. Reminding us
that life is not designed for us to live in fear. Anyone who knew Jack Dunn was fully aware of his passion for riding. I can honestly say he died doing what he loved and I doubt he’d want it any other way.

Dennis Thompson is a Navy Veteran and got his training as an Aviation Metal Smith in Memphis Tennessee. After his short stay there, he was stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico for further training. After a couple of years and several trips to the Harley Dealer, he bought his first three wheel Harley and was hooked. Later, he was deployed to Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam where he worked on CH 46 helicopters which took care of the supplies to the river forces that patrolled the rivers in PBR’s. Dennis’s family have been residents of Amador County since 1854 and homesteaded almost 10 acres of property in Jackson. In the 1880’s they brought an old barn down from Volcano and put it on their property for their farm equipment. Then in 1947, the family decided to use the old barn to open Gordon Hill flower shop which the family owned and operated for almost 60 years, then sold the business and is still in operation today. Dennis turned the old flower shop into his own personal machine shop/ man cave where he restores and repairs old Harleys. After Dennis got out of the service, he became a millwright for 15 years at the local mill in Martel, California. Dennis met his wife Kelly at a biker party in Pine Grove in 1979 and they have been together ever since. After being a millwright he became a machinist and just recently retired from the mill. Kelly also loves old Harleys and rides a 1947 Knucklehead which continued...

is her baby. In 2003, Dennis and Kelly took six weeks and rode to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Harley-Davidson’s 100 Year Anniversary, Dennis on a 1992 FXR and his wife on the 47 Knuckle. It was an 8500 mile road trip that took them from California up to Canada and down to Glacier National and then to Yellowstone where the Knuckle blew a head gasket. Dennis road to Blackfoot, Idaho which was 186 mile round trip and found a head gasket. What luck! It took him a couple of hours to fix it; then they were back on the road to Mount Rushmore then to Milwaukee. The 1949 Pan head “74” he acquired was traded for a 3 wheel Volkswagen Trike to a friend for a 70’s look chopper raked frame, peanut tank, 12” over stock wide glide front end in the summer of 1983. Dennis spent over 7 years collecting parts, frame, tanks and hard to find era correct parts. The original 49 pan motor had Shovel Head barrels and Dennis found the Pan Head barrels and put together this beautiful 1949 Pan Head. He spent about 9 years total on the 49 and says its 99% restored and is like an old friend, they both have

ell folks, since spring is in full swing and the weather a little more predictable, we decided it was time for an extended road trip. How about slipping across the border into Oregon and spending a few days with friends and relatives? I’m sure most of us here in NorCal have people up there; besides, the way things are going here, pretty soon we’re going to have to head up to Oregon just to take a shower. Time was of the essence, so we rode I5 most of the way, which for freeway riding is pretty darn nice - especially that long stretch between Redding and Corvallis. After an overnight stop in Grants Pass, we made our way into Dallas (a little west of Salem) and did some visiting and got settled. It sure was good to see everyone. The next day, four of us were able to get away for some fun on the road. The crew included my brother, Dave, Tom, future son-in-law who also rode up with me from Sac and my gregarious nephew, Greg. So we fired up the scoots and headed north out of town on the Kings Valley Highway. We then hung a left on SR22 which would lead us to the coast. You’ll find some light traffic until 22 breaks away from SR18 near the Spirit Mountain Casino. From there it’s a real nice wooded ride to SR130. This road heads west and follows the Little Nestucca River to Hwy 101. It’s very scenic and you’ll cross over a half dozen bridges as it makes its way through the forest. Once on 101, we took the Brooten Road turn-off to Pacific City. Here you’ll find Cape Kiwanda and one of the world’s largest off shore monoliths, the impressive Chief Kiawanda Rock. From the beach, you can make out what might be the Chief’s face to the south and his ponytail to the north. After being out on the sand for some photos, it being low tide and all, I said to the guys “let’s ride on the beach!” They were probably wiser than me

Siletz Bay Rocks Lincoln City we headed over to the Kyllos Seafood Grill for lunch. It’s a real nice place to grab a bite. It’s right on the beach and offers some nice views. A lot of artistic events take place in Lincoln City. One unique event is the yearly “Finders Keepers’ promotion. Every day from October to May beautiful floating glass art is placed or Sweetbroom On 223 hidden along the beach, all the way down to Siletz Bay. Kind of a treasure hunt thing. The local and said “not a chance, we’re not getting stuck.” glass blowers supply the art and I said “the tide is out, the sand is pretty packed the number of pieces placed is and there are cars out there.” No takers. I said equal to the year it is. So 2,015 of “OK, but I’m going out there anyway. So I fired up, the objects will be put out this year. Little Nestucca Off 130 Bridge made a U and headed down the concrete ramp Lunch over, we continued south to the beach. Half way down I said “Oh-Oh!”. I on Hwy 101 to SR229, where we was looking at a section about 30-35 feet or so turned east and enjoyed cruising wide that was your normal thick, mushy beach sand. High this winding wooded road. It follows the Siletz River up to the tide evidently doesn’t make it up to the ramp. Turn around? little town of Siletz. Lots of great river views along the way. Naw! Here goes! Trying to follow a car track, I rode right in Once in Siletz, the river breaks off and SR229 rolls on down and almost immediately sunk to the pipes. By manipulating to Hwy 20. Going east again, we fast tracked the sweepers the clutch/throttle, I slowly plowed my way through, getting on this mostly forested highway through Eddyville and then thumbs up from some of the beach goers. Reaching the wet on to the SR223 cut-off (the King’s Valley Highway again) hardpan, I rode on down the beach, getting as close to the This fine road will take us back into Dallas and is one of my waves as I dared. When I turned to go back, there was Tom favorites in the area. It gives you a little bit of everything and right behind me. He had followed me down on his BMW. when the yellow Sweet Broom is blooming, it lights up the Alright!! I must admit though, since re-crossing that sandy landscape. Well, we covered about 170 miles and ended area was a little uphill, I almost thought I was going to get that fine ride yakking it up while putting down a cool one at stuck a couple of times. But, we made it back to the guys Ixtapa’s - looking forward to the next road up top. Now THAT was something a little different! From trip. Pacific City, we got back on 101 and putted south to Lincoln City. Right before Devil’s Lake we were rerouted along the Article and photos contributed by Chuck east side of the lake because of an accident up ahead. This & Cindy Loseth turned out to be a fine scenic cruise though. Once in Taking a Break On 22

he first time I laid eyes on this bike it was at the Sacramento Convention Center during the 2015 Easyriders Show in January. There was something about this bike that really caught my attention. Whether it was the spectacular paint job or the old school stretched out front end that has been paired up with the new school T-bars, this ride was unique and nostalgic all at the same time. The bike placed 3rd in the Old School Chopper Class so a lot of other people seem to have agreed with me. Shayne, the owner of War Customs in Reno, Nevada is the bike builder. War Customs is a motorcycle shop that works hard to provide great service to the local area riders for all of their motorcycle needs - from basic maintenance to fabricating one off parts like on this bike. This particular TRM NorCal photo op was a fortunate one as we took advantage of a crystal clear blue sky on an unseasonably warm winter day in Northern Nevada to shoot this bike at the Sparks Marina. I already knew this bike was an eye catcher, but…Wow! As we were setting up for the shoot, it became evident that this bike needed to be in the direct sunlight to fully appreciate the custom paint job by another local talent custom painter Ol’ Skool Jim. Ol’ Skool Jim mastered the effect used to make the paint appear 3 dimensional - as if you could just put your hand into the side of the oil or gas tank. That being said, we had to take a few laps around this unique ride as we were mesmerized by its unique beauty before we actually could begin the photo shoot. Great job to all who had a hand in this build and thank you to War Customs for sharing it with us. Article and photos by Stan Hill continued...

A
s you all know by now Indian Motorcycles has made a huge comeback in the American motorcycle market with some top notch bikes to choose from based on your needs and riding style. This month we are taking a close up look at the Indian Scout. One early morning, I met up with Carlo and Emma, owners of C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin for an early morning ride on some back country roads outside of Auburn. I wanted to get some photos of Emma putting her personal Indian Scout through its paces. Now Emma has no hesitation when it comes to twisting a throttle and on the Indian Scout the throttle response is immediate. I had to be quick on my feet and the shutter just to catch her flying down the road. Now Emma has personalized her Scout with all Indian Ac-
cessories so that her Scout is just right for her. First for those of you that have not met her Emma is on the smaller side for most riders; so one of the first changes she made was to move the forward controls back 2” for easier reach, then swapped out the seat to one with a narrower profile to make the already low seat height of 25.3” even easier to reach the ground and a backrest for more support, then since her and Carlo like to ride she added leather saddlebags that match the leather seat and added a windshield. EVENT amples of what is possible from the line up of Indian accessories. A few months back I was able to jump on the Scout for a demo ride and I have to say that it is one fun bike to ride. With a low center of gravity and very well balanced, making it easy to maneuver this bike quickly and easily. Combine that with Indian’s first liquid cooled 69 cubic inch V-Twin engine that pumps out an impressive 100 hp with 72.2 ft lbs of torque at 5900 rpm stock right off the show room floor. Then take into consideration that the bike only weighs in at 558 pounds with a full tank of gas and you start to get the picture. This thing is a blast to ride as you really feel the acceleration when you twist the grip, with a 31 degree lean angle it will make the back roads your new favorite playground. Here is my recommendation to you as the Indian Demo truck will be rolling back into Auburn on May 12th - test ride one for yourself. Better yet, keep your eyes peeled for dates and times near where you live in our upcoming events calendar – go ride several models, you might just find your next ride! I travel quite a bit, and this month, I was on the Island of Guam. It is amazing that, although, I am half way around the world, and on a beautiful island in the Pacific, that there are still so many people who are suffering and hurting from the same things we suffer with here; suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction, divorce, broken families, and broken homes. I have been able to meet and talk with so many people during my trip. I met a young man who served in the United States Marine Corps for 6 years. He recently got out with an honorable discharge, but came home to no work and no future. Frustrated, he chose what he thought was easy street, and soon that grew into drug addiction, bad choices, and incarceration. I met another woman, who after 12 years and many attempts to save her marriage, her husband (soon to be ex-husband) decided that a life of alcohol addiction and poverty would be more important and appealing than his family, and walked out on her and their 6 children. I was able to relate a little too each situation. And, I was able to share with each of them my own experiences and the road I chose that led to my freedom. I was just a seed planter, but I truly believe God put me in the right place, at the right time, for both of them. I was just there to listen a little, share a little, and offer a little hope to help guide them as well as many others I encountered. As the scriptures affirm, ‘there will be hurting people no matter where we go’. I am not immune from hurting or painful experiences, but I know I am never alone, and that somewhere, somebody has gone through exactly what I am going through at the present time. When
I was fighting addiction, I met and listened to someone who had made it through the other side, and I received some direction and hope. When I was going through a nasty, painful marriage that was falling apart and hard to deal with, I found someone who had gone through a similar experience with their marriage, who could help me walk through the pain. No matter who you are, or where you are from, you have the opportunity to reach out and help others. The key is to listen intently, and truly care for their relief and growth. Just as the sun will come up tomorrow, tomorrow is a new day for you as well. It could be the very day that you find the right person, at the right time, that could share with you some experience, strength, and hope. If you are still searching for a little peace, and a little hope, stop by Thunder Road Church, and we will listen intently, share the truth, and help guide you in a new direction to find a little hope, a little strength, and a little healing. THUNDER ROAD BIKER CHURCH: BRISBANE AUSTRALIA Almost 4 years ago, we received the call to launch Thunder Road Biker Church. We felt there was a need for a local biker church that could be inviting to everyone looking for an option to a traditional Sunday church. We wanted to create a place of acceptance, a place where the motorcycle community would feel welcome and see other people wearing the same gear, who were comfortable with the ‘biker’ lifestyle. When bikers ride to a traditional type of church setting with loud pipes, dressed in leather, showing off some of their tattoos, with bugs splattered all over themselves, they often times are shunned, looked at funny, or just shied away from. We at Thunder Road Church are just like you, we love to ride! We do not judge what you wear, where you are from, what you ride, or if you have ever been to church before. With that being said, we have many people attending; some who
ride, some who used to ride, and some who do not ride, but enjoy being around bikers – all calling this their first church home ever. We also have a lot of bikers who have found the articles in Thunder Road Magazine and now attend. We wanted to introduce you to Thunder Road Biker Church of Brisbane, Australia. A couple years ago, we had some bikers attend from Australia who said they could really use something like this. As we shared with them how we got started, they finally were able to launch their Thunder Road Biker Church at the end of February 2015. They are doing great and we wanted to make sure all of the Thunder Roads Magazine readers knew of this new resource. They are part of our Thunder Road Biker Church family and will always have their doors open to any American biker traveling in Brisbane, Australia that needs help in any way.

2015 JUGGS BUNNY RUN March 28 (Santa Cruz): It was an early out and I noticed that there was a little bit more of a zip in my step than usual. Could it be that I was rolling west to Santa Cruz and who doesn’t want to go there? Secondly, I was heading to the Red and White Santa Cruz - Juggs Bunny Run, and even though I had never been to this run before I had heard a lot of good things about it. For starters the riders all congregated at Callahan’s Bar to drop off an Easter Basket donation to benefit Valley Churches United. The day was a spectacular NorCal day as the riders headed out on a great ride route that took them south to Moss Landing before heading back north to Santa Cruz and ending at one of the areas long standing motorcycle shop - Cycle Imagery. Once there the crowd was treated to some kick ass local bands starting out with Stone Monkey who really got the crowd going and after a short break while everybody chowed down on a delicious meal of tri tip, chicken and brats with pasta salad and more washing it all down with a cold beer. Next up was another local band Rumble SteelSkin (nice play on the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin) these guys were also very entertaining with a hard rockin’ play list. After the band finished its first set, it was time to turn
the heat up a few notches because the girls were coming out for the much anticipated wet t-shirt contest where there is a hefty $1000 up for grabs for the winner for her ability to WOW the crowd. Since Burro from Rollin Loco MC out of Sacramento rode the farthest to this event, he got the honor of making sure that the t-shirts were good and wet. The competition was fierce; the crowd was the judges voting by applause. They had to

do several rounds of applause to finally come up with the winner. Second and third place also won a nice stack of cash as well and it came down to the wire for the final three with Kim taking the top prize. Great job to all the girls though they were all good sports and everybody had a great time the whole day. After the girls were finished raising everybody’s temperature Rumpel Steelskinn took back the stage for some more rock and roll. The entire day was a great success thanks to all the sponsors and all who come out for a fun day full of motorcycles, babes and great camaraderie. I thanked the guys from Red and White Santa Cruz for the invite and pointed my Road King eastward with a satisfied grin from having a fun day as I headed back to Sacramento. An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland , arrived at the casino . She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. She said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I’m completely nude .” with that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, “Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!” As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. “Yes! Yes! I won , I won !” She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumb-founded . Finally, one of them asked, “What did she roll?” The other answered, “I don’t know - I thought you were watching.” Moral of the Story: Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb, but all men...are men! I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn’t even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days… all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor’s cows! He’s like a mating machine! I don’t know what was in them pills the Vet gave him.......... but they kinda’ taste like peppermint.
Four old Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee in St. Peters Square. The first Catholic man tells his friends, “My son is a priest, when he walks into a room, everyone calls him ‘Father’.” The second Catholic man chirps, “My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Grace’.” The third Catholic gent says, “My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone bows their head and says ‘Your Eminence’.” The fourth Catholic man says very proudly, “My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Holiness’.” Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, The four men give her a subtle, “Well....?” She proudly replies, I have a daughter, Slim & Tall Extra Long Legs that go all the way up to form perfectly round buttocks. 44 D Breasts 24” Waist and 34” Hips When she walks into a room, people always say,“ JEEESUS!!” Ever wonder what a man’s ultimate embarrassment might be? I’d have to say it would be running into a brick wall with a good stiff erection......and breaking his nose. And turn about is fair play... A woman’s would have to be standing on the scales and literally having to reach down and separate her sagging boobs, just so she can read the numbers. As they say.....It Is What It Is.

(Yuba County) The 135th Bok Kai Parade was held on March 21 and is a Marysville tradition. If you’ve never been to the communities of Yuba-Sutter for the festivities then stop on by next year. It always is a good day to ride because it is said that it has never rained on the parade. The festivities start with food and souvenir vendors and children activities on 2nd Street at 9am. Parade started a little late around 11:15am with a bang and a gong. The parade is a celebration to the Chinese water god “Bok Eye” to keep the town of Marysville safe from flooding. People from all over the world come to celebrate with the Chinese community. Highlight of the parade is the bombs and the dragon (Hong Wan Lung) which is 175ft long. This parade is believed to be the longest running annual parade in California and from what I have found maybe even the U.S. When the parade came to an end it was time to eat. Sunshine and I love going to fairs and festivals for the seasonal, specialty, and ethnic foods that you don’t usually get to try. After the festivities, Sunshine and I took a nice ride through the Sutter Buttes (the world’s smallest mountain range), everything was still green, cows grazing, trees in bloom, and not a soul on the road except Sunshine and me. Pulling out of the Buttes and onto the Sacramento
River road to Colusa (my hometown). This is my favorite ride of all time, about 30 miles in total. It was a good day and bellies full. The next day (Sunday) is Bomb Day where again a celebration to Bok Eye, this time a celebration of his birthday. After the celebration the streets of Marysville are covered in red bomb and fire cracker paper. Come join us next year. Ride on and keep the shiny side up!
