I

t’s June already?! Wow…this year is flying by with only a few more days until we can escape behind the redwood curtain to the Redwood Run! We look forward to this particular run because when you get down to it with the day-to-day hustle and bustle of our lives, we ALL have a tendency to get wrapped up in all the drama that exists around us. The politics, the beefs between each other as we all have our own views and desires. This has been something that has been on my mind lately, it is very easy to take ourselves too seriously and in the process miss out on a lot of good times. Think about it…riding our motorcycles is supposed to be fun. The kind of fun that your cheeks ache from smiling too much - but you can’t help it! From our bikes, we get to see the world in a completely different way than the rest of the world that is confined to their cages. My favorite weekends are the ones that involve a great scenic ride, with friends that make you laugh so hard that your stomach muscles are sore for two days, which will remind you again of how much fun you had. This is why the Redwood Run is so special to us. This was where we had this crazy notion to start this magazine. Every year we look forward to the ride getting here, the friends that will be here and the fun that will be happening once there! Just good ol’ fashion freedom and fun! We have met some very interesting individuals, most of which are friends to this day. Before taking on the magazine, we were just hard working people? Terry was an admin supervisor for an asphalt company and I was a general contractor running my construction company. And just like everyone else, we were always eager to slice a little piece of time out of our busy lives just to get a ride in. This is what it’s all about… having fun, leave that drama at work and as soon as your leg swings over that seat - it’s time to let all of that go and just enjoy your freedom. That is our mission at Thunder Roads NorCal - so come and join us in the good times. Now while we are out having all that fun - don’t forget good old dad because Father’s Day is coming up. It might be easy to forget what day it is when you are truly enjoying life! So whatever roads our paths might cross until then keep it fun and keep it safe. And like always… Rock Hard - Ride FREE Ride Often Stan & Terry Hill

VICTORY VISION

Spirit Motorcycles – San Jose

2 Up Test Ride

I

will honestly admit that one of the bonuses with reporting on the local motorcycle happenings in NorCal are the occasional opportunities that com our way – like trying out various bike models available on the market. This time came by way of Spirit Motorcycles in San Jose after they literally bailed us out of a tight spot after our bike broke down on the way to cover a fundraiser in the area. Shortly after we pushed our broken bike into the service department, a brand new Victory Vision was being rolled out for us so that we could still make it to the event! As if meant to be, it just so happens to be the only Victory model that I had not taken on a test ride – yet. Now was as good of time as any and a great opportunity to see what it was all about. One thing I have noticed about the Victory Vision is that everyone that I have talked to that rides one will always rave about how well they handle. At first sight, I was concerned about the storage capacity…mainly because we had camera equipment, magazines and all the normal stuff that people bring while doing a couple of days on the coast. I have to say my concerns were quickly put to rest as all of our gear fit into the 29 gallons of trunk storage and saddlebag capacity with ease. The amount of storage on this bike is deceptively big and more than capable of handling whatever gear you need. Now that we were loaded it was time to head west to Santa Cruz. It did not take long before I understood why riders are so crazy about this bike; it REALLY does handle like a dream. Our first stop was a gas station and the way this day was unfolding; I was not surprised that the pump I pulled up to was “out of order” so I had to back up to the pump behind me. At a dry weight of 851 pounds and now loaded down I was ready for it to take a bit of humph to get it rolling; I was surprised because it felt like a bike of half that weight. I think because it is very well balanced with the weight being lower to the ground 106 you do not get that top

heavy feeling. It was there that I found the plug in for my tunes in its own private cubby with a door. So we tuned in some Moonshine Bandits as we headed south on Hwy 101 and can attest that stereo at 70mph was very clear and sounded great to both of us. I am certain that the retractable windshield had something to do with it too! If you want to stay completely out of the wind, raise it all the way up – or maybe you want more wind? Drop it down and all while on the fly from handle bar controls. Some of the other cool things that come standard on the Victory Vision is heated grips, individually controlled heated seats so both the rider and the passenger have control over their own settings, ABS brakes, cruise control. Of course, it has the 6 speed tranny and 106 cubic inch Freedom V Twin to push you down the road which it does very well, I might add. By now I was getting a pretty good feel for the Vision and

Educating the Curious

was really looking forward to some twisties rolling on Hwy 17. I got to get a feel for how well it handles. I think you will be hard pressed to find a bagger that can match it for handling; it feels so light and nimble in the turns you will forget you’re on a big bagger. By the end of the weekend, I had grown a bit attached to how this bike handled and the way that I view the Victory Vision has forever changed. This is a solid built American made motorcycle. As a side note, our sincere thanks to Spirit Motorcycles service department for getting my used and abused Road King back on the road. They can do the same for your ride…but you just might choose to leave with a new Victory or Indian. This is a great store with a top notch staff so swing by and pay them a visit to see what’s new. DRAG SPECIALTIES Big Rig Parts Extravaganza Sacramento Harley-Davidson / Eagle’s Nest Harley-Davidson April 18 & 25 (Sacramento & Lathrop): TRM NorCal was there on back-to-back Saturdays for Drag Specialties big rig parts extravaganza in NorCal, first at Harley-Davidson of Sacramento and a week later at Eagle’s Nest Harley-Davidson. At both locations, Drag Specialties expansive big rig display of parts along with product specialists were on site to answer questions about their catalog parts. Arlen Ness Motorcycles was showing off some of their latest and greatest parts and accessories that can add performance and style. Legend Suspensions were also a big presents at both days events with their newest product - REVO A shocks. At the Legend booth, riders were encouraged to have the shocks swapped out on their own rides for a demo ride to see how much better their bike could be if they switched out. I know…I have Legend REVO Shocks on my bike.

I was also able to take Legends new Road Glide out for a test ride and got a great feel for their new front end suspension replacement. Very impressive, stay tuned for more information about that in an upcoming issue. I also put the new REVO A rear shocks through a tough test on some rough farm roads in the area. The new REVO A has a rebound adjustment so that you can refine the ride to fit your requiments and riding style and found them to be very easy to use and find your

sweet spot. Keep your eyes out for the new front end suspension parts that will be hitting a dealership near you soon. Sharon Murphy, the Drag Specialties rep for this part of the country was busy showing customers all kinds of possibilities for their rides. Let’s face it - if you hang around the Drag Specialties truck for very long you’ll start dreaming about making some changes on your ride… ‘how cool this pipe would be’ or ‘maybe it’s time for a new seat.’ And then you’ll hear a Hog Tunes rep doing a demo of their stereo system - which by the way, can be customized specifically for your motorcycle, and before you know it you’ll want to replace your old tired sound system! Whether it’s Arlen Ness parts, Legend REVO Shocks, Dunlop Tires, Hog Tunes or many more brands to numerous to mention; Drag Specialties is sure to have what you are looking for. Plus the friendly and knowledgable staff at both dealerships HarleyDavidson of Sacramento and Eagle’s Nest Harley-Davidson are here to help from ordering the right parts to making sure they are properly installed on your bike to keep you on the road with style and confidence. Product SPOTLIGHT: WindVest Motorcycle Products

W

indVest Motorcycle Products (www. windvest.com) is a long standing family owned company in beautiful Morgan Hill, California. WindVest has perfected the production of motorcycle windscreens with a product for most bike models on the road. This month’s Product Spotlight is on one of their newer windscreens that has been specifically engineered to fit the new and very popular Indian Road Master and Chieftain models. Today we arrived in Hollister to the local Indian dealership - Hollister Powersports so that we could do a straight up comparison. First, riding the factory set up and then swapping the windscreen out to WindVest’s 12 inch windscreen made specifically for this bike. Indian Motorcycles engineered this bike with a unique retractable windscreen which I think is a pretty cool feature. I rode the bike with the stock set up first - and I have to honestly say it was not too bad; but there were a couple of things I noticed that would make the ride better for me. First, I noticed that

the wind seemed to flow around the sides of the windscreen creating a bit of turbulence between me and the fairing. Second, I am not a fan of looking through the windscreen - I prefer to look over the top of them and with the manufacture windscreen at full height I had to look through the plastic. After my ride, I returned to Hollister Powersports to meet up with the President of WindVest, Doug Dober. Doug made a quick 5 minute change over to their windscreen that is specifically made for the Indian Chieftain and Roadmaster. The 12 inch WindVest screen is designed to work like a screen that is 3 to 4 inches taller – which puts the top of the windscreen at approximately mouth level. They also have a 10” windscreen available. Visually there was quite a difference in the shape and I liked the look on this bike. As I hit the highway and adjusted the screen to its highest level it was unmistakable that the turbulence in front of my face was no longer noticeable and was pleased that I could look over the top of the wind screen and still be out of the

wind. There was no buffeting at the helmet and the product worked exactly as they said it would, pushing the wind up and over my helmet at highway speed. It’s all in how WindVest shapes the screen to cut through the turbulence and direct the wind away from the rider. They put a lot of time and effort into working the shape until it was just right for this particular motorcycle and it shows as the Windvest not only improved the look of the bike but also improved the function of wind protection. Their windscreens come in two different tints: light smoke with a bronze tint and gunsmoke which has a darker gray tint. The screens are made with high impact acrylic that is a DOT approved material. WindVest has a long standing reputation of providing the highest quality products and best customer service available – give them a call at (408) 377-7323 or toll free at (877) 370-7326. Tech Tips CAM SHOES

W

hile designing the Twin Cam engine, the Motor Company was faced with several challenges, not the least of which was reducing emissions. When we think of emissions, we usually think of exhaust. While that is at the top of the list, noise emissions are a significant challenge to the engineering process. Ever increasing EPA restrictions in California on noise and exhaust emissions force manufacturers to rethink the design process. Harley’s reason for going back to two cams was simple. This allowed a reduction in the angle of the lifters and pushrods. The pre-Twin Cam engines had significant side loading of the lifters due to the angle of the pushrods, especially the front cylinder exhaust lifter. It was not uncommon to have one or more of those lifters go south before the 50,000 mile mark. The system to drive the new two cam set-up had to be different than the previous gear drives of the past in order to pass noise emissions. The answer was a “silent chain drive.” Photo 1 shows the set-up used from 1999 to 2005. The first systems from model year 1999 to early 2000 had trouble with cam bearing failures. It was discovered that the rear cam bearing, which was a ball bearing, could not handle the radial tension or side forces. The fix was a replacement with a roller bearing. It was also discovered that the tensioner shoes were wearing out beyond service life as early as 30,000 miles. There was no consistency in the shoe longevity. Some would last over 60,000 miles while some were completely gone by 30,000. The problem then becomes a cost issue as most shops charge one half to a full hour of labor to inspect the shoes. Most shops will recommend inspection every 20,000 miles. In 2006 (Dynas only, 2007 all big twins), HD redesigned the cam support plate, chains, shoes, and oil pump. The new shoes are now utilizing a hydraulic tensioner, a much improved design over the spring tensioner it replaced. The chains were also changed to a roller style, which are less abrasive The

good news for all you pre 06 folks is that there are several options to retrofit the new hydraulic system to your bike. Andrews sells conversion cams that can be used with the new plate and tensioners. Harley’s Screamin Eagle line has a complete kit which allows the use of the pre 2006 cams. This is a nice option if you want to continue to use your existing cams. Another option is the gear drive system offered by S&S. Although a bit more costly, there are no concerns with wear. They can be a bit noisy. Depending on gear fitment, a whine or tick similar to worn lifters may be heard. Gears should be measured to ensure the best fit possible. Pinion shaft run-out is a criteria with gear drives as well. Pay close attention to S&S’s instructions. If run-out exceeds specifications, the gear drive system cannot be used Photo4 Deciding which system to use depends on performance requirements, cost, and even annual mileage. If you’re mostly interested in keeping your bike stock, and put very few miles on the odometer, why spend the cash? More radical set-ups would be better served with gear drives. Ask a reputable shop before spending that hard earned cash.

2 Annual Autism Run nd

April 12 (Santa Cruz): Our initial plans were to head to the 2nd Annual Autism Run in Santa Cruz a day before so that we could leisurely enjoy the area’s beauty before the event on Sunday but our bike stubbornly decided to take us as far as Milpitas. Both of us noticed the road under us started making an unusual rhythmic noise - one that we started to question whether it was the undulations of the road or was it our bike? Not surprisingly…it was our bike. Not again! After we managed to safely pull over without become a big rig hood ornament, our first thought was who do we know within our biker community that could help. We pretty much already made the assumption that our weekend plans were history - before it had even started. Stan suddenly remembered a conversation about a tow company from a longtime Bay Area local, Al from Rack and Pull Industries. And this is how we met Bob of Ambroz Tows for the first time. (See BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT on Page 33). Needless to say, we were able to cover the Coastal Riderz MC ‘s 2nd Annual Autism Run by the skin of our teeth - thanks to the generosity of Spirit Motorcycles of San Jose who loaned us a new bike. On a gorgeous Sunday morning, riders gathered in Santa Cruz at Pono Hawaiian Grill on Union Street for a ride to help raise awareness for autism. The Coastal Riderz MC organized this ride as a fundraiser for a local non-profit organization called BALANCE4kids (www.BALANCE4kids. org). The organization’s mission is to help with the needs of children with severe disabilities like autism. They do this by collaborating with private organizations, parents and public schools to work together. Caring for a child with autism can be overwhelming for parents and public schools, but this nonprofit makes it manageable with alternative supplemental programs for all. We were fortunate to meet a very grateful Jasmin who was there with her 15 year old autistic son Dawson, as they witnessed the outpour of support from the biker community. We were able to make a few stops on this run before we had to deal with our own bike back in San Jose. Coastal Riderz MC Sgt at Arms, Stoney lead the ride out to Moss Landing via Hwy 1, returning back again to Beer Thirty Bottle Shop & Pour House in Soquel, Summit House and Callahan’s Bar in Santa Cruz. It gives us pleasure to be apart and share when our generous biker community goes above and beyond to do their part for great causes! Be sure to put this one on your run schedule for 2016!

his lady has grandchildren and even though you don’t ask a lady her age, she passed 39 years old sometime back with the speed that she shows on the track and never looked back. Mert was introduced to biking in 1965 by her soon to be husband who raced at Stony Gorge with friends. Her first ride on a bike she was scared so she decided to learn to ride by herself; and back then, you didn’t need a motorcycle license. Her first new bike was a 1974 Honda CB550-4, she also rode a used CB750 and later got a new 1998 Anniversary Sportster 1200. Mert traded in the Sportster for a Pearl White Heritage Softail Classic. Now Mert’s road bike of choice is a BMW GS 1200 Adventure. Along with her husband Ron (who also has a matching BMW) the two of them do a lot of riding spending two to three weeks at a time on their bikes covering 2500 to 3000 miles a trip. Mert got interested in Superbike racing at Thunder Hill Track Days all the while taking several classes from Keith Code’s Super Bike School and Jason Pridmore’s Star School. Mert first raced in 2001 on a new CB 929 Honda. Racing at Thunder Hill in Willows, Button Willow in Bakersfield and the Sonoma Raceway at speeds reaching 145 mph and average race speeds of 100+ mph, even dropping the bike at 80 to 90mph. One of the things she learned was how hard you hit when the bike goes down, another thing she learned was after you crash “don’t THINK you have stopped sliding and then stand up, make SURE you have stopped sliding and then stand up”. Mert sold the CB 929 just last year with 9000 miles on it (all track miles). She has spent time on a few other race bikes and now rides a Yamaha R6 on the track. Mert race novice for a few years and placed 2nd for the year, then moved up to expert and placed 3rd over all. She raced Super Bike circuit and AMA. Mert got interested in racing from attending AFM (American Federation of Motorcyclists) club races and activities. She said in the future she will still do track days and help out with the club activities but for racing it’s pretty much over... been there done that. Mert said that racing and racing schools is what made her a proficient rider on the streets. In January of this year, Mert and her husband Ron headed to Las Vegas to the bike auctions and put a few of their antiques up for sale. Ride on Mert and keep the shiny side up. hy I like to ride… Well first of all I like the freedom of being on a bike, when you’re in a car it’s just like you’re in a cage and you can’t get out. It’s different when you’re on a bike. When you’re on a bike you’re more exposed to everything, but it’s well worth the experience. My first experience on a bike was with my Papa, which was great, but I was young at the time and I didn’t know what to think of it. Now I realize that I have fallen in love with riding. Not only did I fall in love with riding, I also fell in love with helping the community on these charity rides that help the people. For example the Walt Gray Ride helped the Make a Wish program earn $39,250. Just being able to receive a letter that told me we (bikers) helped raise that much money, it honestly warmed my heart. Just knowing that I was able to help meant a lot. But that’s just one reason I like to ride. There are many other reasons why I love to ride. Most kids like to spend their weekend with friends but not me, I like to ride on the weekends spending time with my riding family, which is way better than hanging out with my friends. One day soon I’ll be able to ride my own bike, then all my wishes will have come true.

ary Cooper is the proud owner of this sweet ride and he has every right to be. While in the Navy, Gary really wanted to buy a HarleyDavidson motorcycle, but because his physical address was actually a ship – the financing never went through. This little minor glitch would leave him high and dry with only a dream about someday owning one. It turns out that Gary got tired of waiting and decided to go ahead and build one. However, it took him 15 years and he started his project BEFORE Orange County Choppers made its way onto the Discovery Channel. He resourced parts mostly off of EBay as he could afford to buy more parts. And at that time, Gary did not have enough money to have somebody else do the work so he was forced to learn how to work on this project himself. If you really want to ride I guess you will find a way. He said he was grateful for the experience because now he is comfortable working on bikes.

This bike is a complete custom as the only part left on the bike that was original is the Paughco frame that resembles a 1985 or 86 FXWG. The engine is a 96” S&S Super Stroker with 6.1 lift & 4 5/8 stroke, custom built by Billy’s Motorcycles Shop in North Highlands. My personal experience riding next to this bike is that it is a beast! Another TRM NorCal supporter, V-Dawg Cycles added compression releases, reworked the heads changing from 13 to 1 to 10.5 to 1 ported and polished, then they diamond cut the heads. All the rest of the work was done by Gary starting with the BDL belt drive, and hand controls. He had to custom configured the belt drive to fit because it was for a softail type frame, kind of a gutsy move because with the swing arm none of the pieces

fit together. The transmission started out as a 4 speed then went to 5 speed and is now a Rev Tech 6 speed. Carlini Bars where chopped to 3” and tucked in wrapped in Dakota Digital Gauges. Next he went with the Thunder Heart 3 phase charging system that insures on a long day of riding he can still get the bike to crank over after numerous stops. Then it was a custom tank, chopped rear fender and since he has always been a fan of the way a bike looks with no front fender decided to go with it. At first Gary was going through two or three chains a year because this beast would stretch them, then he came up with an ingenious idea to fabricate a chain tensioner using a skateboard wheel, since then he has been on the same chain for the last four years. It has Progressive Suspension rear shocks with custom tree’s and stock front shocks with custom sleeves between them. The paint is stock Chevy Pewter and the flames were laid down by Smokey of Killer Customs in Texas who once again he found on EBay. Other parts that got into the mix came from: Performance Machine, Hooker Headers, PSI Big Air Carb and Jims. Article by Stan Hill. Ride Destinaton:

Calistoga – Hopland - Middletown

T

he other day I noticed that we were down to our last bottle of Port - so I figured that was a good excuse to head up to Napa and do a little riding. I mapped out a route of about 125 miles starting in Calistoga. This will be an adventurous day ride if you are up here for a few days this summer. Depending on what area, there are lots of twists and sweepers to enjoy. Although in the direction I’ve chosen, you’ll always be climbing in the more challenging sections, but it also offers the best viewing opportunities. Before I got rolling on SR29 though, I paid a visit to Busters Southern BBQ. Good stuff Maynerd! Love the beans and pork ribs. Satiated, I fired it up and had some fun cruising this well paved twisty road up to Middletown (named as such since it’s half way between Lower Lake and Calistoga.) Since I was going to travel Geyser’s Road later on, Geyser Bridge I pulled over at the Calpine Corporation and checked out their exhibits. Calpine harnesses the tremendous geothermal activity in the nearby Mayacamas Mountains and converts that energy (heat) to electricity. Using special bits, they bore down hundreds of feet, tapping into thermal sources deep in the earth. The turbines (weighing over 32 tons) use the steam to generate enough electricity to power over 65,000 homes and businesses. border. The Geysers. Amazing stuff! You can get more info or book an actual tour at www.geysers.com/visit. On my way again, I made a quick stop at Noble’s Saloon to drop off some mags. Then, jumping on SR175, I made my way to Kelseyville. It’s a nice putt through the valley, becoming more curvy and quite woodsy as you reach Cobb, then the road levels out again by the time it merges with SR29. I took the cut off and wandered through town. Stopping for

a little pizza at Pogo’s, I ventured next door to the Brick Tavern and introduced myself. Nice little place, some friendly folks. Back on SR175/29 again, I headed up toward Lakeport. Short of there, SR175 breaks off west. Down the road apiece you’ll come upon the Hopland Inn Hopland Grade, and we all know what it means when the word “Grade” is attached to a road. That’s right! Get ready to climb.....and up we go!! Spectacular views along the way and when you reach the top, there is a gravel turn-out on the right. Pull in, walk up to the guard rail and soak in the sight of Clear Lake and the valley below. Real nice! Continuing on, I rode on into Hopland for a butt break and some gas. As you can guess, this area used to be a huge source of the bitter hops used in beer, but some sort of jungle rot wiped out the industry back in the 50’s. From here it was a left onto good old Highway 101. After all the twisties on SR175, it was a nice change of pace to be able to unload on its

vaunted sweepers. None better! If you’re a little pressed, you can take 101 on down to SR128 and then back to Calistoga. If not, and you crave a little more adventure, get off on Geyser’s Road. This will take you up into one of the areas that Calpine uses for its geothermal plants. The first half of the trip follows Big Sulphur Creek. The road switches between two lanes and one for much of the way. I assume there is some road repair in the works, for there are four (well marked) light gravel areas (about 40 yards long) to pass over. Nothing wrong with a little riding on gravel practice, is there? The scenery gets better and better as you climb up into and out of the woods. You’ll also see bicyclists now and then. I didn’t run into any on my side going up though, just coming back down. Once you reach the “T”, hang a right and now, except for the last two short gravel sections, a nice two laner will take you the rest of the way up and over. At the top, you can look down at a vast portion of the Napa/ Sonoma Valley. Beautiful! Geyser’s Road will run right into SR128 and from there back to Calistoga it’s a nice relaxing cruise to finish off the day. Although my day wasn’t quite over, I putted on through Calistoga and into St. Helena. Had a bite to eat at Gott’s Roadside before stopping at a couple of wineries on my way out. The Prager Winery and Heitz Winery are known for their port. That was the reason I came up here, wasn’t it?

S

o there you are travelling someplace you want to be (or someplace you need to be) and your bike has a mechanical out on the road. Damn!!! We all know that is just a part of riding and we should be somewhat prepared with some tools and phone numbers of a place to call for help. When this happens and you know it will, you can become quite frazzled being stuck out on the freeway with cars and big rigs whizzing by in close proximity. A couple of months ago, it happened to us firsthand just outside of Milpitas as we scratched our head as to what went wrong with the bike only to find out later that all the teeth on my belt were stripped! Fortunately, I did know ‘where’ to take my bike in this area because we were just a few miles away from Spirit Motorcycles in San Jose, so we knew our bike would be in good hands. The question was “how do I get it there?” Then I remembered my friend Al Cagle from Rack and Pull Industries telling me once if you ever breakdown on the road near the bay area - call Ambroz Tows (www.

AmbrozTows.com). And just like that…Ambroz Tows was on his way! Bob Ambroz is also a biker, so he knows exactly how to take care of one with his custom built rig to exclusively transport motorcycles. Check it out! We were impressed especially since we could have easily taken up residency while waiting on the side of the road, but Ambroz Tows was quick to respond and his rates are very reasonable. We highly recommend that you add this number to your cell phone contacts (510-385-2374) or in your saddlebag repair kit. Better yet - keep a copy of Thunder Roads NorCal with you and you can always find his number here! Ambroz Tows services all of California, so keep this in mind if you just need your bike transported home from anywhere in California - this is the way to go. Fortunate for us as we rolled up to Spirit Motorcycles and before Bob had my bike off his tow truck, Kevin the General Manger was rolling a brand new Victory Vision out of the store for us to use and demo - so we could keep our nose to the grindstone and keep our commitments while in the area. This is just another great example of the type of businesses that we are fortunate to be able to work with in Northern California. And these are businesses that will take great care of you and your bike too. Article and photos by Stan and Terry Hill

THE HOTEL LEGER “Spirits Here Since 1851” Mokelumne Hill (or Moke Hill) is a must see destination in Calaveras County as it once was the richest gold mining towns in California. Centrally located off of Highway 49 in the middle of the Mother Lode is The Hotel Leger (www.hotelleger.com) with an extensive history that dates back to the 1800’s when its doors were open during the rough and tumble days of California’s gold rush. You will get a notion for what life must have been like back in the gold rush days as you should come expecting a glimpse into the past. The 13 rooms give that rustic back in the day feel as they are full of antique style to keep with the rural nature, but are very clean and well kept. Several of the rooms have balcony access and fireplaces. The surrounding property is just beautiful and in the summers on Sundays they have a blues band out back in the courtyard by the pool to make it the perfect weekend getaway. Wedding planners have often had the Hotel Leger as their matrimonial garden backdrop… that speaks volumes as we all know how particular a bride-to-be can

be! It is a beautiful setting. There is also a great restaurant and bar that is street level called The Whitewater Grill & Saloon. Hotel Leger is biker friendly and can accommodate groups of up to 150 for special events. The building itself has all kind of interesting things to see and curiosity is encouraged, with a reminder to be respectful of its historic charm. The Hotel Leger has been featured on several TV shows like Travel Channel and Ghost Stories. Oh yea, I almost forgot about the resident ghosts that still hang out there, it seems like everyone who has spent some time in the hotel has a story about an encounter; fortunately the spirits are friendly yet mischievous in nature. Moke Hill is a great place to come and learn some good ol’ California history as well as a great place to stay while you check out all the other historical sites in this area. On June 28th, the Iron Steed Harley-Davidson promoters have a planned group ride coming to The Hotel Leger from Jamestown as part of the 2015 Nor-Cal Passport Tour were the riders will be rolling in to their Sunday Backyard Blues & BBQ - so make your plans to come with us it’s going to be a great adventure.

JAMESTOWN HOTEL The Jamestown Hotel (www.thejamestownhotel.com) is located on Main Street in the heart of California Gold Country just off of Hwy 108. Situated in the middle of the old historic part of Jamestown, this hotel is a great example of matching the old town charm with modern convenience. The hotel was built back in 1919, up until it was refurbished in 1938 into the Mother Lode Hospital. On a few occasions, hotel guests might inform the new owners that they wanted to come see their place because they were “born here back in nineteen such and such”. It was sometime later that the hospital was converted back to a hotel. The current owner, Charlie Morgan went through an extensive renovation of the entire property from top to bottom and they did a phenom-

at these businesses!

enal job turning what was a rundown hotel into a thing of beauty. It now has cozy rooms that are named after personalities of the Old West rather than room numbers. There is a large 2nd floor balcony with great views of the historic down town Jamestown. Located on the lower level is a four star restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a full bar. There is additional seating under a covered patio making it a great quiet place to chat over a meal or sip a beer as you absorb the charm of this historic part of California. If you are looking for a destination getaway, this biker owned business would be a great choice as they will always welcome their 2 wheeled friends. Mark your calendars for June 27th - Jamestown Hotel will be hosts to the riders who will be riding a part of the Nor-Cal Passport Tour with Iron Steed Harley-Davidson. Come ride and stay with us in Jamestown - you do not want to miss this weekend!

BAMS: Bay Area Motorcycle Superfest May 2-3 (Pleasanton): The annual BAMS show sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys returned to the Alameda County Fairgrounds for its second year. The fairgrounds in Pleasanton is a perfect venue to hold a show like this since it is centrally located in NorCal and has easy access from where ever you might be coming from. This year the US Army sponsored the bike parking to insure that all who road in on their bike had free parking. Inside two large halls, we were all treated to some of the nicest custom bikes in California from amateur builders working out of their home garages to the pro builders – every bike in the show were all very impressive. The creativity and artistry on display is amazing and just about when you think you have seen it all before - you turn around to look closer, you’ll see something completely different. The event also had on hand a big selection of some of the top vendors in the area both big and small where you could get anything from bike parts to motorcycle insurance right on the spot. A familiar face at events was Steve Schapiro, a TRM NorCal advertiser/sponsor, who was kind enough to introduce me to celebrity Emilio Rivera

from the Sons of Anarchy show. Emilio was there to meet and greet SOA fans and he even stopped by the Thunder Roads NorCal booth to pose for photos with us and some of our readers. He is a very cool guy and just as down-to-earth as they come and a pleasure to be around. Outside there were two stages set up for bands performing nonstop tunes ranging from blues to rap music. On the other end of the fairgrounds was a roped off parking lot for the motorcycle stunt riders that were entertaining the crowds with their skillful control over their machines. Also nearby, the dyno trailer was set up so you could test your bike to see just how much torque and horsepower your ride can muster, or for a small fee they could tune your motorcycle on the spot. Sunday morning was the day to do some serious bargain hunting at the Super Swap Meet. I did see a few items that I wanted to pick up, but I was under strict orders to keep my hand out of my wallet. Truth be told, I think my other half might have cleaned out my wallet the night before in Danville at the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight! Early afternoon on Sunday, the show judges were ready to award the trophies to

the class winners with Paul Binford of Binford’s Custom Cycles who created the one of a kind Best of Show Trophy. Akroyd gets it all stopped by blasting a 50mm machine gun over the tops of their heads and gets to his classic speech. He shouts “One thing I cannot stand is Americans fighting Americans”. There is much more to the speech, but it really hits home when we have our sons and daughters overseas only to come home to a war being raged from within, against our own people. Americans, let’s stop fighting Americans! Let us remember that it is the thief that causes the strife, the hatred, the animosity, and the division that is taking place. His goal is to separate us and cause hate between us. But, there is a way to peace and there is a way of reconciliation. See you at Thunder Road! EVENT

It seems that every few years there is something crazy that happens and the whole country goes into uprising. There are countless marches on the capital, there are innocent people getting hurt, and there are entire cities being looted and burned. It seems such a shame that we have to burn down our own cities to make a statement. We loot the people and businesses that are truly in those neighborhoods that support us. Other people in cities all across America watch in disbelief and say “those people are crazy or why in the world would they do that to their own city”. Then we open the paper or see the daily news informing us that there has been an officer gunned down in our own city, a local military hero has been beaten to death, a local teenager has committed suicide from bullying, another gang shooting, or one more friendship ended due to lying, cheating or thieving. We wonder when will it all end and the never ending question lingers, “why is all this happening?” This question has been asked for hundreds of years when things are going array. The root cause for most of the devastation in our country stems from evil-willed individuals with selfish personal agendas. As we see our service men and women travel thousands of miles to fight to hold on to our freedoms, it seems such a shame that they have to come home to an America where Americans are fighting and killing Americans. Did we forget the beautiful song they sing at ball games, “God Bless America land that I love”? Steven Spielberg’s comedy “1941” is a farce about WWII and a funny movie actually. But, there are two different scenes where Dan Akroyd makes a statement. The first is in a restaurant where a ruckus starts as a service man confronts a civilian about not being in the Army. He continues to trip the civilian and a fight breaks out. The second scene is where Akroyd and his bunch drive a tank down Hollywood Blvd while John Belushi lands a P45 Tomahawk right behind them. Army is fighting Navy, Navy is fighting Marines, and they all are fighting the “Zoot Suiters”.

County Crossroads:

42nd Annual Fishermen’s Festival (Sonoma County) In the past Sunshine and I have reported on various festivals around NorCal because of the food, this time it wasn’t the food, or the destination, it was the journey. There is no road finer than the ride on the coast on Hwy 1. The view is like no other, the fresh air smell of the ocean, and smell of wood burning stoves along the coast are things that remind me of camping. We even saw a whale playing in one of the bays. This year for Christmas, Sunshine got me a helmet cam that we put to good use on this trip. OK, so part of the reason we chose this festival was the food, especially since Sunshine and I both love seafood! The Fishermen’s Festival in Bodega Bay in April was much bigger than I anticipated. As we followed the signs to the festival, we encountered mass parking problems. At least with a bike, it takes less room to park and in most cases (as in this festival) they have bike only parking up front. The main event was the Paddle Boat Race. The crowd to watch

these races was about 1/8 of a mile along the bay, six to eight people deep. The Paddle Boat racers were made up of plywood and duct tape. The teams named their boat with names like Plywood Pirate, Fire Code Blue III, Ship Faced, Screwed, Over Engineered, It’s 4 o’clock Somewhere and Woodward Ho. The announcer said by popular vote Ship Faced was voted most likely to come in “number two”. Ship Faced was the only boat to capsize during the race and the announcer said they will have to clean their Poop deck. Don’t hammer me for the announcers lousy jokes, I just report. The race wasn’t about winning but about having fun. As we entered the festival we were warned “Watch out for the animals”, this was a pet friendly area, we saw people with their dogs, pigmy goats, pigs, llamas all on leashes. Besides the races and food there was Beatles Flashback – a Beatles Tribute band, wine tasting, crafts, kiddy area with a wet sea creature petting zoo. Another big event was the “Blessing of the Fleet”. The wine tasting area had a bar 50 foot long full of different local wines to try. You buy the glass with this year’s logo and for a $10 ticket you got to try two wines, buy as many tickets as you like and the old favorite beer and plenty of it. We saw kites flying over the bay and a dude on the beach making the largest soap bubbles I’ve ever seen. The bubbles floated over the entire bay, nice touch. After we finished the festival,

Sunshine and I headed back up the coast to Fort Bragg where we finished the day with a beautiful dinner at “The Wharf Restaurant” at Noyo Harbor. Sunshine loves the coast and the sea, we will be heading back next month for the Beer Festival. For more information on this festival for 2016 go to www.bbfishfest.org. A farmer was selling his peaches door to door. He knocked on a door and a shapely 30-something woman dressed in a very sheer negligee answered the door. He raised his basket to show her the peaches and asked, “Would you like to buy some peaches, ma’am?” She pulled the top of the negligee to one side and asked, “Are they as firm as this?” He nodded his head and said, “Yes ma’am,” and a little tear ran from his eye. Then she pulled the other side of her negligee off asking, “Are they nice and pink like this?” The farmer said, “Yes,” and another tear came from the other eye. Then she unbuttoned the bottom of her negligee and asked, “Are they as fuzzy as this?” He again said, “Yes,” and broke down crying. She asked, “Oh, dear, why on earth are you crying?” Drying his eyes he replied, “The drought got my corn, the flood got my soy beans, a tornado leveled my barn……. And now I do believe I’m gonna’ get screwed out of my peaches.”

An air traffic control tower suddenly lost communication with a small twin engine aircraft. A moment later the tower land line rang and was answered by one of the employees. An old pal of the Pilot’s, whom was a passenger, was riding shotgun since the Co-Pilot called in ill . He contacted the Tower and yelled,; “Mayday, mayday!! The Pilot of this aircraft had an instant and fatal heart attack. I grabbed his cell phone and as I hoped, he had the Tower on his speed dial memory. I am flying upside down at 18,000 feet and traveling at 180 mph. Mayday, mayday!!” The employee in the tower had put him on speaker phone immediately. “Calm down, we acknowledge you and we’ll guide you down after a few questions. The first thing is not to panic, remain calm. He began his series of questions: Tower: “How do you know you are traveling at 18,000 feet??” Aircraft: “I can see that it reads 18,000 feet on the Altimeter dial in front of me.” Tower: “Okay, that’s good, remain calm. How do you know you’re traveling at 180 mph?” Aircraft: “I can see that it reads 180 mph on the Airspeed dial in front of me.” Tower: “Okay, this is great so far, but it’s heavily overcast, so how do you know you’re flying upside down?” Aircraft: “The sh*t in my pants is running out of my shirt collar.” ______________________________________________ Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. Better Beginnings for Babies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the care of mothers and babies. And with the help of the NBMA and their diaper donations, they help a lot of moms. Your donation consisted of a great ride through Santa Rosa and an excellent BBQ, plus knowing that you helped these mothers and babies in a time of need.
