here has the time gone?! Hard to believe it but this month, we are celebrating 5 years of putting out this magazine every month. THANK YOU to all of you that have been picking up Thunder Roads Norcal, because it is only because of you that we are able to do this each month. It’s you - the readers that are the ones that create value in the magazine which gives our sponsors a reason to advertise their products and services here. We truly feel blessed to receive the encouragement and support that all of you have shown us as we continue to do our best to put together a magazine that fits Northern California and its riders. There is much more to learn, and more room to grow as we make this our motivation for the next five years. So if you like what we are doing here - give YOURSELF a pat on the back, because without you this is not possible. On another topic while at the Redwood Run, this year we ran into a friend of ours that has been around the motorcycle scene in NorCal for a long time and is also in a club. He made an observation about the younger riders that are coming into the mix with their own ideas about how to do things. He mentioned that many of them will load up their rides onto a trailer and bring a RV to runs like the Redwood Run. He says that they’re not really all that interested in packing up the bike and riding it to where ever to pitch a tent for a few days. Now I am not going suggest that is the wrong way to go, as some of us value comfort more than others. But…it did give me a little twinge of sadness. Some of the best times that I’ve had involved putting everything that you would need on your bike, heading out with a few friends and at the end of the day sharing memories with a bottle of JD, beers and a few laughs while around a campfire . In fact, sometimes the most fun I would have was actually the ride to where ever we were heading to. My hope is that some of the 30 and 20-something riders will still feel the same way. Although I enjoy riding my motorcycle, I do not consider it as a toy necessarily; but rather as my personal choice when it comes to transportation. Given the opportunity I will choose to ride 100% of the time over jumping in the car. So for me that means if I am going to the store for a few items - I take the bike, if I am going to visit family in SoCal or Nevada- I take the bike. It does not matter to me how far or short of a distance - I just prefer to ride. My hope is that there will always be more of you that love “the ride” more than you love your bike. For some of us, it is more about “the ride” and not so much about what you ride. We all have our different interests and should peruse them the way we each see fit to do, so no matter what type of rider you are we will have space for your style here within the pages of Thunder Roads NorCal. What I would like to focus on are options available to you that can help you to prevent Heat Stress. TechNiche International has developed and produced several technologies around keeping the individual cool and comfortable in hot environments.

Two key technologies are our HyperKewl Evaporative Cooling Fabric and their HyperKewl Cooling Neck Band. Both help to reduce the temperature of the individual at the skin level, helping to reduce the heat the individual is feeling and exposed to while riding your bike. Both can be used for work or play to help improve comfort, and performance, while helping to combat Heat Stress. While these two technologies can play a key role in helping to prevent heat stress, they should not be used alone, but must be used in conjunction with good hydration, shade and personal awareness of how the heat is impacting you as an individual.

TechNiche’s HyperKewl Evaporative Cooling product line can cool the individual up to 15F below the ambient temperature, depending on environmental conditions. Both the HyperKewl Vest and Neck Band are easily activated and can be worn with little or no interference to movement. Lightweight, easy to activate and durable providing 5 - 10 hours of relief per soaking.

1. Simply dunk the item in water for approximately 1 - 2 minutes 2. Gently squeeze out the excess water 3. Wear

Tech Tips Harley-Davidson’s Screamin Eagle Cam Plate Upgrade

P

reviously we discussed the cam chain tensioner shoes on the pre-2007 Big Twin / pre-2006 Dyna. Although you won’t find a specific periodicity for inspecting these spring type shoes in HarleyDavidson service manuals, the industry standard is 20,000 miles. We’ve seen these down to metal at 20K, and we’ve seen a few that were still serviceable at 50K. Very unpredictable! One interesting observation is that the bikes with performance cams tend to hit that unserviceable wear point closer to the 20K mark. CVO owners this means you! It makes sense since the higher lifts and faster opening and closing ramps would impart more stress on the parts. Last month we covered the Feuling upgrade. This month

we’ll talk about the Screamin Eagle Hybrid Cam Plate Kit upgrade. Photo 1 As before, follow your factory service manual procedure for cam plate removal. Unless you need to go into the top end for some reason (rocker inspection, leaky gaskets, head work, etc.) skip the step of tearing down the rocker assemblies to remove the stock pushrods. You can bolt cut these and replace with easy install type adjustable rods. Remember to unload the valve train on the cylinder from which you are cutting the pushrods. Also be advised that not all adjustable pushrods are the type that can be installed without rocker removal so check with the manufacturer. Common vernacular for these rods are “Easy Install” or ‘Quick Install.” Although there are many to choose from, the most economical are Harley-Davidson/Screamin Eagle. They come in a kit with all the o-rings and the Evo style covers which allow you to access the adjusters. Buying from the other popular sources requires the separate purchase of the covers. The Screamin Eagle kit is excellent quality too. Once your stock cam plate is out, remove the bearing retainer and press out the cams. Replace the inner and outer bearings while you’re there. The inner bearings are manufactured by INA, and while they are adequate for stock cams, the superior full complement Torrington bearing is much more reliable. The outer bearings should be replaced

as well. The front cam bearing is a ball type and once side loaded (from pressing it out) is no longer serviceable. The rear roller should be replaced as well. Not necessarily required, but cheap insurance. One easy way to do this is to purchase one of S&S’s bearing kits (cam install kit). This comes with all four bearings, the oil pump and cam plate o-rings, and a cam cover gasket. Follow the instructions for the Hybrid kit for installation, but before moving forward check your flywheel run-out. Mount a dial indicator to the engine case and turn over the engine manually (pull the plugs, put the transmission in top gear, and roll the rear wheel to rotate). Most have a few thousandths, but if it’s excessive (check the service wear limit in the manual) that might explain that annoying vibration that’s been bugging you. Inspect the lifters and cams. Maybe while you’re in there this would be a good time to install those cams you’ve always wanted. The kit comes with the cam plate, a high volume/high pressure oil pump needed to run the new tensioners, the new tensioners, drive gears and roller chains. This is a high quality product and certainly the most economical answer to the problematic spring loaded cam chain tensioners. Next month we’ll check out S&S’s gear drive answer to the upgrade. Ride safe!

HOLLISTER FREEDOM RALLY 2015: Birthplace of the American Biker

“Organized” that is the word that comes to mind after we were introduced to this year’s new Rally promoters, ConvExx. Onsite with a staff of twenty, it was obvious that ConvExx’s vision and expertise paid off as the vendors, attendees, as well as the locals were all very pleased and optimistic about the future of this historic and iconic California Rally. Early on Friday morning, we set off to check out the lay of the land. New this year was “VIP access only” to the photo tower sponsored by Geico Insurance for folks that purchased a VIP pass. These passes gave you an opportunity to climb the tower to take photos of the large crowds of people meandering below and the thousands of bikes lined up along the blocked off San Benito Street - which was open to motorcycle traffic only.

Stages set up on Fifth and Seventh Streets with great performances from noon to 7pm as bands would draw in a crowd around to hear some of the best local and not- solocal bands around. On Sixth Street, the main concert stage was set up for the headline bands playing on Friday and Saturday evenings that were also included in the VIP package. On Friday, The Fabulous Thunderbirds were rocking downtown Hollister with memorable tunes like “Tuff Enuff”, “Wrap It Up” and “Powerful Stuff.” As a musician, you have to love it when concert goers are enjoying your playlist by dancing and singing along - word for word. Then on Saturday night, The Guess Who took the stage as their fans surrounded the front of the stage as they belted out their great hits from the 70’s like “These Eyes”, “No Time”, “Undun”… and who can forget, “American Woman”. And in The Vets Building, there was a continuous line of Sons of Anarchy fans that wanted an autograph and a photo with not one, but two Another Win for David McGovert SOA actors - Mark Boone

AnDrea and Jack Shit

Junior aka “Bobby Munson” and Tommy Flanagan “Chibs”. In fact, some fans eagerly waited two hours for a rare opportunity to meet their favorite celebrities in person! It was worth the wait, as the actors actually looked like they were having a good time hanging with all of their fans. walked away with $300 and a trophy that is sure to be a conversation piece for years. Late Saturday afternoon on the Seventh Street Stage, we couldn’t help but to notice a sizeable group of ladies had gathered…as we got closer, it began to make sense! On stage was Miles Shon who was rocking the stage with his band. Apparently the ladies think Miles is “easy on the eyes” and from what I could tell and the music was great too! Up next, it was time for the much awaited Ms. Hollister Freedom contest. The girls really got the crowd going as they were all lovely ladies - but somebody had to win! After much hard work by event announcer Jack Shit (who by the way did a phenomenal job keeping the crowd entertained and informed throughout the weekend) we were able to extract a winner and a crowd favorite - Congratulations to AnDrea from San Leandro! The three guest judges were Joe from Geico Insurance, Dave from Russ Brown and our very own Terry from Thunder Roads Magazine® NorCal …for a girls perspective. Located in front of the Vets Building, Hollister Powersports were set up to raffle off a brand new Indian Motorcycle to some lucky biker at the end of the rally on Sunday. Also happening down the road from the main rally area were Victory and Indian factory demo trucks on hand for the weekend at Hollister Powersports. Rally goers were taking the opportunity to demo ride these outstanding American made motorcycles as the staff was turning and burning nonstop demo rides. Corbin Seats was doing their thing with their annual open house where you can walk through the factory and see how they make their famous Corbin seats or visit the several vendors booths onsite like Kirby, Kirby and Kirby, WindVest, Schapiro and Leventhal Motorcycle Attorney’s and Custom Chrome. On Saturday, was the Biker Bob Memorial Bike Show. The late Bob Warford was a good man and a friend of Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal - unfortunately Biker Bob passed away last year after being diagnosed with cancer. He is truly missed by all who knew him and this year’s custom bike show was dedicated to him. Back in Hollister on Sunday, the streets were still crowded and bands were still playing as we pointed the Road King north and headed back to Folsom. The Hollister Freedom Rally was a huge success by all accounts with an attendance “guessimate” at 40,000 to 45,000! That being said - with ConvExx at the helm and the City of Hollister behind this great event from the Police Chief to the Mayor to the City Council, we are very optimistic that this historic rally will continue to get bigger and better in 2016! Big Bear Choppers Dyna Motor Mount

L

ike a lot of people who ride Dyna’s, I’ve been going through a lot of motor mounts. The stock mounts just can’t handle the abuse we put them through. When the motor mounts get sloppy, the handling on a Dyna gets real bad, real quick. Since the rear swingarm is mounted to the transmission and not the frame, good mounts are essential. This is why Big Bear Choppers came up with their Custom rear motor mount. Using FXR rear mounts sandwiched into a billet bracket keeps the motor and transmission centered in the frame with no lateral movement. I installed one of these beauties on my 96 FXDS, and it’s like having a whole different bike. No more dancing around on the freeway, and cornering is now a lot more fun. Installing this mount is about a 2 hour chore, but it sure is worth it. These mounts cost quite a bit more than the stock mount, so it’s nice to know they are rebuildable at less than half the cost of the stock one. Get a hold of Kevin at Big Bear Choppers for more information. You can reach him at (909) 478-7788 or www.bigbearchoppers.com. Putting on one of these mounts is the best thing you’ll ever do to improve the handling of your Dyna. Article and photos contributed by Forrest Coss

MY TWO CENTS: It was bound to happen! There I was, just cruising along at about 80 MPH. I heard the infamous tick, tick, tick noise and I thought, “What the hell is that? It was getting louder so I decided to get on the freeway and baby it home. I barely made it with all the popping and missing and the bike just plain old running like shit. I’ve never been broke down for more than a day or two at the most. And now with 122,500 original miles on my bike, and the noise I heard in my top end, I’m looking at a rebuild, and its summer time! I’m not a certified Harley mechanic. But I’ve been wrenching my whole life and I know my way around my tool box and a motorcycle. As long as I have my trusty repair manual I can repair anything on my bike. My manual looks older than the Holy Bible itself, and it has saved me thousands of dollars and more important, it saved me lots of grief and helped keep my bike on the road with years of trouble free riding. I pulled my heads and barrels off my bike and checked my end plays and tolerances’ on my rods and rockers. Much to my amazement, they were still tight, in fact well within specs, but it was obvious my valves where shot. I figured what the hell. I’ll just do a top end job to get me through the summer then I’ll tear down this winter for the big rebuild. Luckily, I had a complete top end I bought years ago from a friend who tore his new bike down to pump it up. I thought I would just bolt it on and ride off without a hitch. I made the mistake of taking a short cut and not replacing the studs coming out of the cases. Wrong! The one snapped while turning the last head bolt the final 90 degrees. Now I’m pissed at myself for being stupid and trying to take a short cut. So stopped and walked away for a while. I had a shot and a beer and took the heads and barrels off again! I waited a few days to calm down and go at it again. It’s Sunday morning and I’m on a mission! I head out into my garage with the added expense of studs and gaskets, again. Things are rolling along pretty smooth and the motor is together and I’m feeling pretty good about the progress. I’m replacing my pushrod tube o-rings and I run across two little green o-rings. I can’t figure out where they go. I can’t find em in my heads and

barrels section of my manual so I call my good friend Grumpy, from Grumpy’s Motorcycles in San Bruno. Grumpy answered his phone and I say “Hey Bro! What’s happening”? Shop owners’ love it when you call em at home on their days off and call them Bro. Grumpy says “Al, the shop’s closed today.” I said “I know! That’s why I called you on your cell phone.” Well, that went over like a fart in church. I apologized for calling him on his day off and told him it was important and I asked “What do these little green o-rings go to?” He told me where they go, and what to look for, and what I needed to do, and I’ll be damned, it involved taking the heads and barrels off again and then Grumpy asked “How far along are you with your motor?” I told him “My motor was all together, I just need to put my push rods in”, and the son of a bitch laughed! Can you beat that! I don’t know what pissed me off more, my embarrassment of another stupid mistake, Grumpy laughing or the fact that I won’t be riding this afternoon, either way I was pissed off and ready for a murderous rampage! I pulled off my heads, barrels and fuel injection again! As I’m cleaning my hands so I can go to Harley again and spend more money on another set of gaskets one of my neighbors walks by and the old guy says “Wow! That looks like a big project. You sure you know what you’re doing?” I’m thinking “Holy Shit! Did Grumpy call you and tell you to come by here?!” Then it blurted out of me, and before I could stop it, and with several choice words, I told him to get out of my sight. I’m gonna have to stop by his house and apologize to him one of these days. Later that evening all was right with the world and with the help of my wife and Grumpy’s phone conversation, I was riding my bike again! I put almost seven hundred miles on it so far and it runs great without any oil leaks or strange noises. I grew up with my Dad making me and helping fix my own dirt bikes as a kid. I’m not a cheap bastard. I just like to do it myself. I like the feeling knowing I can fix my bike if I’m out in the middle of nowhere and something happens, and over the years it has served me well. That’s my two cents. Have a great ride! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

RIDE PRIDE:

You’re My ‘Boy – Blue!

I am not usually one you’d see riding a big flashy bagger, but I have to admit when I saw this one it left me a bit envious. Gino, Mark and crew at Victory of Citrus Heights (www. VictoryMotorcyclesCH.com) really took this bike to a entirely new level with the reshaped backend, air ride shocks and a center kickstand to make the bike stand straight up when parked. The lines of this big bagger are most defiantly pleasing to the eye with the help of James Dean’s Rebel Design of Roseville with his meticulous custom paint job (www.rebeldesignpaint.net) by applying a matte Cobalt Blue to give it a warm alloy intensity that is accentuated with a custom seat by Seatworks (www.SeatworksCMS.com) to

perfectly draw attention to the lines and shape of the bike and complimenting the overall look. This Victory Cross Country was sure to turn some heads….and that it did with an enthusiastic buyer just as the guys were rolling the bike off their trailer at the 2015 Laughlin River Run! The crew at Victory of Citrus Heights are constantly pushing the possibilities when it comes to creatively customizing the Victory line of bikes . Citrus Heights Victory are paving the way and are getting noticed far and wide for their creativity. Great job on this one guys! Article by Stan Hill. A

s we made plans for the three day Hollister Rally, this year we thought we would expand on it a little by adding a day ride to the coast on Saturday. It was a nice sunny day and very little wind made the ride down I5 enjoyable, after a westerly turn on SR 152 we made our way into Hollister. It was early Friday afternoon now and San Benito Street was already packed with bikes! We found a spot though and wandered into Johnny’s for a cold one. Ahhhhh...that was refreshing after a few hours in the saddle!

Later we ran into Stan and Terry at the Veteran’s Hall. They were headed over to the bike show, so we decided to putt into San Juan Bautista and check in. Our home for the weekend was the Hacienda De Leal. A nice place to stay, recently renovated and associated with the Leal Vineyards. One of the things we enjoyed there were the Mariachi’s that would serenade you in the courtyard while you had your morning Joe. Back in Hollister we checked out the bike show and ran into S & T again. After a bite to eat at the Cheap Seats Pub, we all headed down to the Fabulous Thunderbirds concert who have been one of our favorite bands for a long time and great way to “wrap up” the first day. Saturday morning, after our serenade, we hit the road with breakfast in Moss

Landing as our goal. We took the back roads via Highway 101/San Juan/Hall Road, etc. Once on Highway 1, we turned south and rode on into Moss Landing. A quiet little town where you can whale watch, check out the otters or rent a kayak or raft and cruise the bay. There’s also some pretty good eating around town. We chose the Moss Landing Café and weren’t disappointed. Halibut and eggs for me and crab cake benedict for Cindy. Next time through we are going to make it for lunch. Lots on the menu. From there we continued south on 1, making a stop at Fort Ord to take a look at what’s left of the old abandoned Army barracks. Closed in 1994, it was one of the most attractive post locations in the Army. Now, it’s slowly being torn down to make way for other developments. Such as CSU, Monterey Bay and the Veteran’s Transition Center. So now it’s on to Monterey. We used to visit Monterey when our daughter lived there, but that had been a while back now. So we cruised around a bit, checking out some of the old hang outs, before riding down to Point Pinos and the Lighthouse. Point Pinos is the oldest continuously operating Lighthouse on the West Coast. It began operation in 1855 and still uses the original lens, but the light sources have varied from whale oil lanterns to incandescent vapor lamps to electric lights. After a nice visit, we really would liked to have ridden the 17 Mile Drive, but alas it is closed to motorcycles. Too many loud pipes bothering delicate ears I guess! Back in Monterey, we explored Cannery Row and ended up in Cooper’s Pub for lunch and a couple of brews. If you like Shepherd’s pie, they have a good one! Cooper’s calls it a Cottage Pie, though. From there we hit Ghiradelli’s (what can we say?, we like chocolate) for some goodies and did a little shopping for the granddaughters. After packing up our stuff, we headed back to San Juan Bautista. This time we took Highway 1 to SR156/101. This is a real scenic and comfortable route. Dropping off our stash at the hotel, we putted back into Hollister and found the Moving Wall exhibit (www.themovingwall.org). This is a half-sized Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial replica of the Wall in DC. It’s escorted around the country so that those who can’t make it to Washington will have a better opportunity to see it. We found my old American Legion teammate, Ron Troyano’s place on the wall, said a couple of prayers and slowly made our way downtown. At Johnny’s Bar & Grill, we toasted all those that served – maybe a couple or three times, I think? We made our way to see “Goodtime” Charlie Brechtel Band. As usual, Charlie and the boys sounded real good and like the previous night, some good music at the end of the day is just fine by us. Sunday morning we hung around downtown Hollister for a while. Then we met up with Stan and Terry at the Casa de Fruta for brunch before reluctantly heading home. Already looking forward to next year. KENNY’S BAR & GRILL

e rode to Woodland to meet Kenny - the owner of Kenny’s Bar & Grill on 721 East Street about the NorCal Passport Tour with Iron Steed Harley Davidson. It was not long after walking in the front door that we met Kenny and his wife, Cookie mingling with a few off-duty bartenders and some local customers. The point is that when you ride in and drop your kickstand here in the motorcycle only parking right in front you are treated like family. The staff and patrons are fun and friendly bunch. Come to find out, the owner and several of the staff also ride! There is a full bar with cold beer on tap – plus this place has great food as well so come with an appetite. As we were getting to know Kenny, we learned in his younger rowdier years, Kenny had been 86’d from this very bar as a customer! 22 years later, Kenny bought the bar! Apparently, he missed coming here! Filled with NorCal sports memorabilia, Kenny’s Bar and Grill will keep you up to speed on all of your favorite sports action with several TV’s and a large patio area for additional space that looks out over the bike parking. Ride with us on August 15th to Kenny’s Bar & Grill in Woodland as a part of the Iron Steed Harley-Davidson NorCal Passport Tour. This is going to be a great day of NorCal riding and we are certain that if it is not already – that Kenny’s Bar & Grill will be on your list of places to ride to with your friends!

PINE LODGE CLUB

ast of Placerville and just off of Hwy 50 is the beautiful small town of Pollock Pines. As the valley temperatures climb in the summer, this becomes a great place to get away from the blistering heat. This rustic bar situated in the tall pine trees boasts El Dorado County’s coldest beer and that is a refreshing treat after riding through the valley on a hot day. Pine Lodge Club is just up the road from Apple Hill and is a great year round destination. Bar owner, Debbie is eager to welcome any one on two wheels that is looking for a poker stop or ride destination on your run. 2015 REDWOOD RUN June 12-14 (Piercy): For over 35 years, the Redwood Run has been a Northern California tradition that is talked about and on the bucket list of bikers all over the country. While in the pit, we just so happen to meet one such couple as Lynn and Ronnie Harper of Swannanoa, North Carolina rode out across the country and told us in their southern drawl that they were “having the time of their lives!” while partying alongside other Redwood runners. For us, it’s meeting new people whether they are the tried and true old-timers or the first-time Redwood Runners - it is one of the best parts of this fun-filled run. Bordering Mendocino and Humboldt counties is the Riverview Ranch – located a few miles south of Garberville and situated just a few miles from some of the largest and most majestic coastal redwood trees. It is a great opportunity to jump on

Night Ranger your bike for a day ride through the Avenue of the Giants or many of the other surrounding sites that will amaze you with its natural beauty. This is defiantly a new experience for those that have never been here before as the sights and sounds of the Redwood Run should be something that all bikers experience at least once. This truly is one of the last old school biker parties thanks to all of the hard work by the Kiwanis of the Redwoods who spend huge amounts of time getting everything ready to go from pulling the numerous

The money raised by the Kiwanis goes to help the local kids sport and other programs here in the surrounding counties. Another highly involved organization of the Redwood Run is MMA of CA (Modified Motorcycle Association) who provide

RIDE PRIDE:

INFAMOUS #15 FXR Shortly after we purchased our 1987 FXRS, we realized the motor needed a rebuild. Therefore, in early 2014, my husband, Tracy decided to tear the bike down to its frame. He took the bottom-end (and other various motor parts) to C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin Inc. for its rebuild, where Carlo and his staff went out of their way to ensure attention to detail and great customer service; and Turttle at Bagger Design, had the transmission rebuilt for us and helped troubleshoot various aspects of the rebuild. While the key elements were being rebuilt, Tracy had all the tins and frame stripped, by American Stripping, and then he prepped and painted the base and clear coats himself. Once the tins were dry, we took them for finishing artwork to Dennis Price, who did all the silver-leaf and pin-striping by hand. Once we received all the major components back, our good friend, Gene Vetter, came over to help Tracy reassemble the top-end of the motor and put the motor, transmission, and primary back in the bike. We got the tins back from Dennis and were able to get the bike assembled just in time for the 2015 Easyriders Show. And given my passion for motorcycle photography (www.billiethekidphotography. com), I knew we needed to photograph the finished product. So, I called up Katie and asked her if she would be gracious enough to model with our bike. We all met up and took these photos in an alley in Sacramento. As many of you know, it takes a collaboration of friends and businesses to help with a bike rebuild. Thus, thank you to everyone who had a hand in helping us! Fox Shox: Street Performance IFP and IFP-R R

W

hile researching replacing the rear shocks for my 2003 Road Glide for something that could handle my 280lbs plus my 130lb wife (who also rides with me) - I decided to look on a website I have been using for many years (www.directcycleparts. com). It was here that I stumbled on the brand new Fox shocks for Baggers called IFP and IFP-R R is for adjustable rebound. My son has been using FOX Shox products for a long time - not only do they look cool, but they function really well. Knowing that in past years Harley Davidson and Fox have collaborated, I decided to give Fox a shot at this, so I purchased a set of Fox IFP Shocks with the Heavy Load springs and put them on. Afterwards, I road from the Central California straight to Gilroy, and as I flew over Pacheco Pass never slowing, the newly installed shocks gave me a really stable feeling around all the long sweeping turns up the mountain, and down I could feel that I always had consistent contact rear wheel to the road - no matter if I hit bump or dip in the road. I can say that at this point I’m happy with my purchase as I ride really hard and these shocks are EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. Since then I have ridden all over the place Sierra’s, Frisco, Foothills and flatlands - all with great results. And since I work for Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal, I thought to myself these shocks have only been on market for a few months and the folks that read the magazine need to know about these! So I contacted Fox Shox National Accounts Manager - Powered Vehicles, Jason Smith and told him how happy I am with his product. I also mentioned that I was really curious about the IFP-R adjustable rebound and the difference between the two. He helped me acquire some with lighter springs, my wife likes the lighter spring rides more for comfort. Although the lighter springs, recommend weight total for passenger and luggage is lighter, the springs works well. Also these shocks have a 22 setting on the speed of the rebound which is “awesome” - so with my wife on these IFP-R shocks, I’m putting 7 clicks on the adjustment and without her I put more like 14 clicks. If you’re the type of rider that just wants to put some good shocks on your bagger and you don’t want to mess with a bunch of settings - the IFP are the ones for you. Now on the other hand if you ride your Harley like a sport bike, the IFP-R’s would definitely be the ones I would go with! The Dyna shocks are launching late August/ early September and will be available in the IFP and Piggyback versions. Special thanks to Jason Smith at Fox Shox, Ian Tosh at Hard Drive and Frank from Direct Cycle Parts.

The Raz Report: Fabricator Extraordinaire, RANDY GRUBB (Creator of “The Blast-O-lene Special”)

hat is this motorcycle(?) that looks like something out of a Flash Gordon movie? It’s an aluminum skinned DecoPod crafted by Randy Grubb and mounted around a Piaggio Fly 150 Scooter (piaggiousa.com/scooter/ fly-150.html), a 4-stroke 155cc scooter that retails for about $3,000 (that’s $3K just for the scooter, the DecoPod is $9K). This is one of two DecoPod models; the other larger model is built around a Piaggio MP3 500 ABS (http://www.piaggiousa. com/scooter/mp3-500-abs.html, a 4-stroke 492.7cc scooter that retails for about $9,000 (that’s $9K just for the scooter, this larger DecoPod is even more). Both models have a unique feature of being un-droppable by virtue of the fact that the body is wide enough that the body’s the surrounding bumper will contact the ground before it can lean over far enough to fall over, yet the body is high enough off of the ground to allow the rider to enjoy typical (not Laguna Seca style) riding. The original DecoPod was created in a manner similar to the way old airplanes were built with a wood skeleton. Those airplanes ended up with cloth wrapped around the wood skeleton and the wood skeleton ends up being a part of the finished airplane. In similar fashion, the DecoPod was created by forming aluminum around a wood buck. A buck is similar to a skeleton, except the buck is not part of the finished product, and, it can be reused to make another. The finished aluminum body is plenty sturdy enough to be mounted directly to the stripped

down scooter without any other internal supporting structure. The attention to detail is amazing everywhere you look: the headlight, the grill, the surrounding bumper, the turn signals, the tail lights, the doors, the windshield, etc. Well, Randy still has the DecoPod wood buck, so, if you must have a DecoPod then contact Randy. Oh, you say you would like something a little more imposing than a scooter powered earth-bound space ship... how about a DecoSon? A custom Art Deco style aluminum body fitted over a 1984 Harley-Davidson Sportster, in this incarnation. The DecoSon was commissioned by the Northwest Harley-Davidson dealership in Washington and won 2nd place in the Custom/Modified category at The Quail Motorcycle Gathering show in Carmel in May 4; and I have been told – it will be featured in Playboy magazine (the DecoHelmet is also a Randy Grubb creation). It is reported that sticking your hands through the holes in the DecoSon’s body in order to grab a hold of the drag bars is a little disconcerting, but, something that you get used to, and, Yes Randy has the wood buck for the DecoSon too, so, you could have your own DecoSon, or, for that matter, whatever else you may dream up - Randy is the man who can put it together. Randy’s current project is an open cockpit roadster with lines in the style of the Delehaye powered by a 600 hp Falconer aircraft V-12 engine. This project began in January, 2015 and is estimated to be completed by January 2017. PHOTO INSERT Caption:

Randy bench racing, Moe supervising. Perhaps you have seen or heard of one of Randy’s other creations, for example, the DecoLiner, a 26 ft aluminum motor home, could be Flash Gorden’s Airstream, and features a flying bridge, complete with driving station and room for 5 passengers on the roof. Or, one of Randy’s most famous builds, “The Blast-O-lene Special,” which is now known as “Jay Leno’s Blast-O-lene Special Tank Car,” a HUGE two seat roadster with a 190 inch

wheelbase and weighing 8500 pounds built to resemble the Bonneville Land Speed cars of the 1930’s; its body is all hand formed aluminum and features a 2500 pound engine from a M47 Patton tank, Or, perhaps you have seen or heard of the “Blast-O-lene Indy Special,” Randy’s second monster rod created during his “Blast-O-lene” building period. The Indy Special is powered by another M47 Patton tank engine and was Randy’s homage to the A.J. Watson Indy Roadster race cars from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Or, how about “Piss’d off Pete,” a chopped Blast-O-lene 1960 Peterbilt conventional cab semitruck tractor model 351. The truck was re-skinned with new aluminum. The engine is a twelve cylinder Detroit diesel 12v71 of approximately 1972 vintage. Each cylinder is 71 cu.in. and it has two superchargers on this two cycle diesel motor. The Detroit diesel makes 1200ft. lbs. of torque and 474 hp. at 2150 rpm with an unforgiving attitude and dangerously loud - in its flatout scream, it hits around 140 decibels! If you’d like something custom built for you then fill out the Contact Us form at www. randygrubb.com with some comments and he’ll see what he can do for you! However, be forewarned, these projects can be two to three years in the making and, I suspect, there are others out there vying for Randy’s time for their dream vehicle, so, get in line now. Check out more of his unique creations at www.blastoland.com

Bikes, Boats & Bikinis June 27 (Stockton): It was a nice drive to the Delta, Windmill Cove for the Bikes, Boats and Bikinis; we got there about 2pm and stayed until 7pm ending our day with Cole Fonseca and his amazing band, Lazarus Cole and the Immortals! What a show they put on, very talented guys! The Too Much Fun Club put on a nice event! Although there were other events going on that day, they still had a nice crowd to enjoy the events on the Delta today. Tom, Secretary of The Too Much Fun Club, was very nice to have a picture taken with me.

Hard Knocks Customs had some nice bikes to gaze on. The upper deck was filled with fun people and music. We got to see a few stand up jet ski’s in the Delta do some tricks, that was fun to see them do back flips, but hard to catch them in action! The afternoon winded down with a cheeseburger and fries and music from Cole. Until next year! Article and photos contributed by Lori Quiring. Additional photos contributed by Forrest Coss

TENTSILE STINGRAY TREE TENT

A

A TENT LIKE NO OTHER

s soon as the gates opened, riders stampeded into the campground in search of a place to set their tents for the 2015 Redwood Run Motorcycle Rally. I had been allowed an early entry and had set my tent in the trees. And when I say “in” the trees, I don’t mean on the ground surrounded by trees – I mean actually IN the trees! After all of these riders had set up their tiny, poorly ventilated nylon sweat boxes, a steady queue of people began to make their way down the hill toward my camp to see my tent. “What is this?” “It’s a tree house tent” I’d reply. And that is what the Tentsile Stingray tent I was field testing happens to be. When Alex Shirley-Smith and Kirk Kirchev came together in London, England to design and produce this multi-person hammock tent, nothing like it had ever been seen before. These unique and masterfully built tents are now available on four continents and it is doubtless they will soon become a common site in the American motorcycle rider’s gear. I have searched out and purchased numerous tents advertised as a motorcycle campers ‘best friend’. And, unfortunately, though some were more unique than others, most had a fatal flaw that eventually relegated them to the back of a dark dusty shelf in my shop. The little one man coffin tents barely allowed a full sleeping bag, though their tiny packing size was excellent, these suffered a quick death upon the experience of little room to turn over, or the calisthenics of crawling in and out. Dome tents all came with the requisite half dozen rubber-strung poles to figure out and fight into place; an unpleasant ordeal for any rider who simply wants to have a bite to eat, a snort of courage and a bug-free place to sleep. And if the fatigue of the previous day leads to a later than usual start- the blast furnace heat these weakly ventilated tents gather with the first hint of sun leave the occupants “sweating like a whore in Church’! If it is not for just the unease of erection of these old style tents, the complication of rocky or marshy-wet ground dictates an additional ground cloth or sleeping pad be added to the gear strapped to the bike. All of this has been a nightmare that had to be endured- until I happened upon Tentsile Tents. The obvious difference of the design of this tent is like a lightning flash. A tent in a tree—brilliant! Upon receiving the Tentsile Stingray model (www.Tentsile.com), I took it into my yard to see how this interesting tent would be to set up. Three 2.5 ton stress straps were looped around small trees in my yard,

the ratchets were attached and tightened and the tent rose flat and taunt 4-feet off the ground. I ran the two bungeed light aluminum poles into the sleeves sewn inside the ‘no see-um’ bug netting and plugged the ends into place. Completely bug free, no damp or rocky ground to contend with, and if needed a rain sheet over the top—all in less than 8 minutes set-up time. What if a rider stops for the night in a place with no trees? Besides the zippered fabric entry hatch in the floor of the tent, there is a large zip door on one side for a no-hassle entry whether hung or at ground level. A peg in each of the three corners and the tent sets up on the ground just like a conventional tent- in 4 minutes- Only much more roomy and with 100% ventilation from ground up. Bam!! Right to the top of the list of equipment to go with me to Redwood Run and Sturgis 75th Annual Motorcycle Rally! The Tentsile Stingray is rated for 3 adults and gear or two adults and two kids, with a total max weight potential of 800 pounds off the ground. Each person has their own comfortable space on one of the three sides with room in the middle for extra gear. Anything not brought into the tent can be out of the weather below within the drip lines of the tent— including your motorcycle. Each of the sleeping areas when occupied lay quite flat, unlike the ‘big bend’ that is common for most other hammock type sleeping apparatus. The sides curve up only slightly to allow an unrestricted comfort and security. There is none of the trampoline bouncing and instability that a person would think would happen. The overall footprint of this tent is three corners of 15’x 15’ x 15’… giving the camper 160 square feet of room inside- with a central roof height of 4’ off the sleeping surface. Tear resistant micromesh walls for super air flow and a 190T coated Polyester fly keeps any wind or rain out when needed. The total size and weight of the package is roughly 10” diameter and 20” long, at only 19 pounds including the three strong ratchets and the tensioning straps. Tentsile’s Stingray tent is simply a comfortable joy to sleep or rest in at any time in the three seasons. The compact bundle is easily packed on any motorcycle to have a unique and comfortable camping experience in any terrain you may find along your path. ho do you influence? Most of us go through our day to day lives just doing the best we can. We go to work, pay our bills, occasionally hang out with some friends, and ride as much as possible. The general public really doesn’t think they have anything to offer, or have any type of influence on anyone else except themselves. I’m here to tell you that no matter who you are or what you do, you do have an influence on others by what they see you do and what they hear you say. I bring this up because children are the greatest victims of influence than any social group on the planet. They can be influenced for good or they can be subjected to evil. We all have children in our lives, be it our own children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, next door neighbors, or just some neighborhood kids that walk by our home every day. The question we should be asking ourselves is this; when they see us, what are they actually seeing with those little eyes and what are they hearing with those little ears? Do they see violence and hate, or do they see love and joy? Do they hear yelling and ridicule, or do they hear compassion and truth? How many children do you personally know that have been abused, hurt, abandon, ridiculed, belittled, or just left behind? We can all play a part in helping kids see the better in life and in humanity. We can all do something for a child in need. Bikers seem to be one of the biggest contributors around the holidays with toy runs donating thousands of toys every year to needy children. But, the other 364 days of the year, these kids are looking for so much more than toys. They are looking for a role model, a hero, someone to look up to, or someone to just acknowledge them. We, as a community of bikers, can have a huge influence on the kids in our world. If they are your own kids or grandkids, take them for a ride on occasion and make them feel special. If they are your neighbor’s kids, be sure to wave to them or just say hi, give them

encouragement, some praise, or an occasional thumbs up. There is something cool for a kid when a biker, all dressed in leather, waves to them, tells them they are cool, and to stay in school. When you’re out riding and a kid is looking at your bike, take their picture on it and send it to their parents (with their approval, of course) as they will cherish that for the rest of their lives. Who knows, they may grow up to be our next two-wheeled advocates. What I am trying to say is to take notice in the next generation of kids as most of them are just searching for a hero, a role model, or a positive influence. Please consider reaching out to help a child. HERE ARE A FEW ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO HELPING OUR KIDS: • • • • •

A passenger in a taxi heading for Tampa Airport when he leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate-glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said, “Are you o.k.? I’m so sorry, but you scared the living daylights out of me.” The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, “I didn’t realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly.” The driver replied, “No, no, I’m the one who should apologize, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for the past 25 years.” ______________________________________________ Mildred, the small town gossip and self-appointed monitor of church morals, was always one to stick her nose into other people’s business. Most members of the congregation did not approve of her intrusions, but she was feared due to her lethal forked tongue, so everyone maintained their silence. She took that fatal step too far one day, when she accused “Lightning”, a biker, and new member of the Church, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old Chevy pickup parked in front of the small town’s only bar all morning and late into the night. She emphatically told Lightning in front of the entire congregation that “Everyone seeing that pickup there would know what he was doing”. Fact was, Lightning had volunteered to help Gus, the bar owner, repair a leaky ceiling in the kitchen. But Gus was not a member of the congregation so nothing was brought to light. Lightning, a man of few words but plenty of action, stared at her for a solid minute, then just got up and left the church. He said nothing. Later that early morning; around 1:00 a.m., Lightning parked his pickup directly in front of Mildred’s house, walked home, and left it there all night long and late into the lunch hour. ______________________________________________ Things That Make You Go Hmmmm?? Why does your OB-GYN leave the room when you get undressed, only to sit down in front of you and see all you got to see in plain view, when they return to the room? If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about him? Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

GearHead returns home a day early from Sturgis as his bike broke down and he caught a lift just inside of town, and then grabbed a cab. It’s after midnight. While on his way home, he asks the cabby if he would be a witness. The man suspects his wife is having an affair, and he wants to catch her in the act. For $100 bucks, the cabby agrees. Quietly arriving home, the husband and cabby tip toe into the bedroom. GearHead switches on the lights, yanks the blanket back and there is his wife, in bed with another man, just as he suspected! GearHead puts his gun to the naked man’s head. The wife shouts, ‘Don’t do it! I lied when I told you I inherited money from my Aunt Sarah. HE paid for the Audi I gave you on our Anniversary. HE paid for our new cabin cruiser. HE paid for your season tickets. HE paid for our house at the lake. HE paid for your African tour with your biker buddies and your new ATV. HE paid for the custom rims for your Ultra-Glide. HE paid for our Family WaterWorld membership And, HE even pays the monthly dues on the kid’s Private schooling. Shaking his head from side-to-side, GearHead lowers his gun. He looks totally confused over at the cabby and says, ‘What the hell would you do? The cabby never skips a beat and replies, ‘I’d cover his ass with that blanket before he catches a damn cold.’ ______________________________________________ “Putter” and all his golfing buddies are standing on the green while he’s got a very important shot to win the game that’s not over 15 feet to the hole; straight in. “Handicap” yells out, “come on, already, Putter, we all want to finish up and grab a drink”. Putter replies back, although in a hushed tone, “don’t bust my balls here huh? My wife’s up on the Club’s veranda watching us and I want to get it right”. Handicap yells back, “Nah, forget about it, that’s way too far off, you’ll never hit her from here”. ______________________________________________ One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a birthday gift The next year, I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!” Hello! Some people are so dense.

SACRAMENTO MILE: HOW MANY FOR A DYNASTY? May 30 (Sacramento): Flat track racing is plentiful on the West Coast; small tracks everywhere host Saturday night screamers in little venues on warm summer nights. But when the Sacramento Mile is mentioned, the long history of big bikes beating hard into the corners in a tight pack is no better said than those two words. Until 1970 the Sacramento Mile was held at the Old State Fair Grounds off Broadway and Stockton Blvd. Classic wooden stands vibrated from both the hum of the crowd and the roar of big bore motors rocketing their riders through deadly opportunity in each corner of the track. The venue changed with the building of Cal-Expo, and the horse track inside that facility is now the focus of the annual spectacle, which 49 times has highlighted the Grand National for this sport. From 1984 to 1994 both Spring and Winter Grand Nationals were held at this track. Riders know the Sacramento Mile track to be the most challenging with its long straight-aways leading into very tight corners. The Sacramento Mile provides the greatest of spectacles on the Mile racing circuit. This year Bryan Smith of Michigan, riding a Kawasaki, suffered under a burden none of the other riders had to bear. Four consecutive tries in the Sacramento Mile had lead him to victory and he was looking to solidify his all time hold on the crown if he could win this Mile for a fifth time in a row. Though Scott Parker holds the all time lead of 14 wins at the Sacramento track, only Bryan Smith had a chance at the “Fiver”. Smith’s home state of Michigan is the only state fielding riders who have more wins in that 49 year history of the “Mile” than California riders do. And with Smith riding a

Kawasaki, this manufacturer’s bikes had only won 3 races against the greatest competitor in the mile- Harley Davidsonwith 37 wins to their credit, so Bryan Smith had that hurdle to jump also. Legends Chris Carr and Jay Springsteen still know how to twist a throttle., Seven-time AMA Grand National Champion Carr lined up alongside former three-time series champ Springsteen at the Sacramento Mile, round four of the 2015 AMA Pro Flat Track Championship, for an exhibition rematch on Harley-Davidson XR-750s. Last year, “Springer” got the win. This time around, the 58-year-old wasn’t to be denied. Carr attempted a draft pass off turn four but came up short at the checkers. The 25-lap main event was a constant trade-off of leaders with clear goggles on five riders coming to the head of the pack. California’s Mikey Martin broke to the lead in the first lap, with Jared Mees, Brad Baker, Brandon Robinson, and eventually Smith in front of the dust at the end. Coming to the wire Smith executed a flawless drafting sling-shot pass for a razor thin lead to get the checkered flag. Riding his Triumph Brandon Robinson was overtaken by the brilliant riding of Bryan Smith to come in the “sister-kisser” spot by only 0.020 of a second. Jared Mees riding his XR 750 Harley-Davidson took the third place finish crossing the line in the fresh dust of the Bonneville rider. Kenny Coolbeth Jr., points leader in the Harley-Davidson GNC1 division, finished fifth as Brad Baker on a matching Harley locked the 4th position in the race ahead of 4 other Harley riders behind Baker who finished for a total of half the top 10 race racers. Kawasaki tallied a total of 4 of the top ten riders with the race winning of Smith.

#42 Winner Bryan Smith

The GNC2 race was won by Nick Armstrong, of Norco, California on his Honda, with Tristan Avery of Chesterfield, Virginia and Brandon Wilhelm of Aurora, Indiana piling in behind at the flag. This win gave the GNC2 points to lead Armstrong. It will be interesting to see if Bryan Smith can or will attempt to 6-pete at next year’s Sacramento Mile…. Be there in the noise and dust to see for yourself. Article and photos contributed by Brian Watts / Outlaw Images

Mary Shattuck

I

was inspired to learn to ride because, like most riders, I didn’t feel safe on the back of my exhusbands bike. So in 2005 I went to the Harley shop and bought my first sportster; much to his displeasure. I rode that all over the place for a year and put a total of 4,500 miles on it. Once I felt very comfortable I went to demo days and bought my 2005 Street Glide; it had a total of 14,000 miles on it when I gave it back. My second bike the 2006 Street Glide came a year later; with the 6speed transition and 96 cubic engines! Much faster and great on gas! My pink wires and flames are an extension of me. I even got the personalized plate “BOARETTE” for female hog. I now have over 41,000 miles on it! The Craigslist ad came while I was still living in Contra Costa County and commuted daily in my pink leather jacket. Highway 4 just sucks…so instead of the Corvette; I chose to ride my Harley. It was one of the darkest times of my life. I was considering a divorce as my husband was not the right man for me. My one great escape was my Harley. One night I received a call from an only co-worker of mine who said you need to check Craigslist “Missed Connections” section. My automatic assumption was “why? Does my husband have an ad on there”. She explained, no…just go there and read the column…much to my surprise, there was an article about what an inspiration I was to this woman. I never did reach out to her; as I never wanted her to know the dark place I was in. I have been riding now a total of 10 years. I’ve ridden to Sturgis the long way, Oregon, Washington, Idaho Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Utah, Nevada and back to California. I’ve taken many

other rides as well. I’ve participated in events such as Redwood Run, Camp Komratto, Street Vibes, Hollister, Veterans Day parades and events and even some Law

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 68

Enforcement rides. My best advice for lady riders would be to start on a smaller bike. Once you feel comfortable, move up to something that fits your body. As I say; it doesn’t matter how heavy the bike is; just that you always keep centered. There are always PLENTY of gentlemen out there that will help you lift it; if you can’t on your own. I slipped on a rock at the grocery store one day…they helped out! And when riding, don’t forget, when riding look where you want the bike to go; not at what you don’t want to hit! I now have over 60,000+ miles under my belt. Yes, I’ve had the unfortunate spill with the grapes on the road. But

I can tell you I am so thankful I got my Harley when I left. It’s the cheapest therapy in the world. I often refer to our weekend rides as Motorcycle therapy. As for the “Missed Connections” woman on Craigslist… I’m in the place you wanted to be now. I have a wonderful man, and my life couldn’t be better!
