ooking back at 2015, all I have to say is WHAT A RIDE!!! No one said life is easy and if they did they are living in a fantasy world – because nothing worth a damn is easy! It is the experiences along the way the keep the fuel in the tank for tomorrow. We are ending this year full of appreciation for YOU….yeah, YOU…the one reading Thunder Roads NorCal each month. We know that without YOU- there would be no reason to keep going. We have met many of you over the course of this year as well as in the previous years after taking on this publication. Many of which have provided us with so much encouragement, motivation and inspiration and it is because we are blessed with your support that we will be forever grateful. Our goal was to explore a variety of avenues regarding our two wheeled riding community within NorCal and that is just how we intend to continue moving forward. At the end of last year, we promised we were on the lookout for new exciting events and places to go. Looking back at the past twelve months, we can say that is just what we did! We learned of new events we have not participated in before and places we had never stopped to see so that we could share with you. You can expect even more new adventures in the future. Our formula is pretty basic…as we grow in support from our advertisers aka our sponsors, we will add more content and more pages each month. As a reader of Thunder Roads Norcal, it is important that our biker community support these businesses. They are showing you right here that they not only support us here at the magazine, but they also are supporting YOU…the readers and the motorcycle lifestyle that we have all chosen to be a part of our lives. In the coming new year, we are very excited and energized by the new opportunities that lie ahead of us, we fully intend to fill 2016 with even more things that we have never covered yet. New places to drop a kickstand, eat, grab a cold beverage or maybe stay for a weekend getaway. On that note, thank all of you who make an effort to submit your events via our website (www.thunderroadsnorcal.com) after at all…it is FREE! Take full advantage, doing this will help us with our goal to be the biggest CALENDAR OF EVENTS for Northern California out there. OH wait we already are - but we intend to make it even BIGGER in 2016! As we look back on 2015, we are saddened to see the passing of many dear two wheel friends and loved ones in the wind. It is a Thunder Roads NorCal tradition to remember loved ones from our biker community in the December issue with a LAST RIDES Memorial collage. Ride in paradise Brothers and Sisters. It serves to not only recognize and let others know of the passing of dear friends, but also as a reminder to all of us that we must live life to its fullest every day! November 9 (Auburn) – Christmas wishes for local needy children stand a better chance of coming true due to the efforts of the residents of the Auburn Ravine Terrace, a full-service adult living facility, and the members of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club Chapter 6. At the behest of Auburn Ravine Director of Activities Diana Davis, the leather-clad members of the BFMC – a non-profit area riding group devoted to safe motorcycling and the excitement of the open road on two wheels – have placed a 50-gallon barrel at the 750 Auburn Ravine Road senior facility to collect toys for kids in the area this holiday season. “At first thought,” said Dan Parker, secretary for the rider group, this paring of bikers and seniors may seem as odd as eggnog and motor oil, but it really works. We are hard-core Harley-Davidson riders but we are also a group that put on a bike show this summer for the seniors at Auburn Ravine. Now the beneficiaries of that pairing are going to be local children at Christmas. Win, win, win.” “Who knows,” said Davis, “that barrel could get filled more than once.” The plan, she said, is to have Auburn Ravine residents donate un-wrapped Christmas toys for local needy kids and than to have the BFMC riders deliver them to local holiday toy runs like the Gold Country Toy Run on December 5th in Auburn, and the Nevada County Food and Toy Run on December 12th in Nevada City. According to Parker, the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club is an international organization with a local chapter, active in community events, since 2000. “This is our chapter’s 15th Anniversary,” said Carl Spotts who started the local rider group, “giving back to the community is one of our founding principles. We’ve participated in local holiday toy runs for years and this year we’re thrilled to team up with the great people at Auburn Ravine to benefit area kids.” Contact: Diana Davis, Activity Director, Auburn Ravine Terrace Adult Living Facility, 530-823-6131 Adam Corsiglia, Treasurer, BFMC Grass Valley, CA 916-215-9273 / Daniel Parker, Secretary, BFMC Grass Valley, CA 530-265-4294 or (cell) 916-215-3105

October 18 (Placerville): The suspense in the air was palpable as the Halloween season quickly approached and those who were brave enough to face their fear of the ancient tombs of the gold country that all have stories to tell about the past. Ok - well it was not quite THAT scary, but it was a lot of fun as we all met up at PJ’s Roadhouse to get the ride started. The fall weather was perfect with barely a slight chill in the air. The ride route was well planned and as usual it was personally re-conned in advance by Bob the event promoter of 41 Live! It was a spectacularly scenic route through the hills that took us first to Fiddletown Masonic Cemetery where we were greeted by the Ghoulish Girls - Michelle, Jackie and Cori from Folsom HOG and

Sierra Riders. They were in the spirit as their poker stop was decorated and the ladies were dressed up to add to the experience. This poker run is a self guided tour so you get your directions and go at your own pace, taking time to explore the historic tombstones when and where you want. Onward to our next stop at the Volcano Cemetery where we found Dave from Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys along with his beautiful help for the day, Julee. Locating this very cool old cemetery was a bit challenging and sent more than a few riders on a tour of the town; but with a little persistence I think most of the riders did find it. From there it was off to the City Cemetery in Sutter Creek which sits up on a steep hill overlooking the town below. We were enthusiastically

greeted by Rachael and Sara, who were having a great time with all the riders rolling in before the final stop. This year the end location was Old E Metalworks (Home of the $25 Oil Change) in Rancho Cordova. Old E Metalworks recently finished the expansion of their shop and it made an ideal place to hang out for the afternoon. You should swing by and check it out - they do some really cool work there along with their standard service work. Alex and his crew (minus his dad, John who we were fortunate enough to spend the day riding with) had the place all set up and ready to party. 805 was a sponsor of the event - so the beer was taken care of. Bob had also accumulated quite the swag collection for raffle prizes – all of which were donated by HarleyDavidson of Folsom, California Custom Trailer in Elk Grove, Cycle Gear, Sonoma Raceway and Alex owner of Old E Metal Works donated one of his handcrafted lamps that he describes as “industrial chic” along with many other donations. This was a super fun day hanging with friends; and until next time, we’ll see you on the road! Article and photos by Stan and Terry Hill.

Biker Etiquette If You Don't Know, Don't Ask

T

he other day the topic of biker lady etiquette came up—specifically, is it ok to ask for a ride on some guys bike? It reminded me of something that happened a few years ago. A bunch of us were going to a rally, and people were pre-partying at JC’s (my boyfriend) house. I had to leave to pick up my son and would take my car and meet them later at the event. Just as I was leaving, an attractive, flirty friend of ours came up to me. Her husband was late, so she asked if JC would give her a ride to the rally (about 5 miles away) and “we’d all hang out later.” She did the right thing and asked me if it was okay. What could I say? I felt trapped and said yes. But I didn’t like it. That’s one of those gray areas in what can be a very shady social situation. Check out what happened to a biker model friend of mine. She and her boyfriend were riding down the Pacific coast with a newly single buddy. They stopped at a vista and she asked the buddy if she could pose by his fatboy with the ocean backdrop. “Sure,” he said. Upon their return home, she posted the pix, smiling at the memories, unaware that the ex was not so “ex”. The cliff notes’ version of this is that the “ex” girlfriend saw the picture on FB and was…not happy. When she told me this story, I didn’t know that lady biker etiquette could get this complicated. Here’s my new rule: the safest way is to stay away. Don’t ask to ride, sit on, pose next to, touch or whatever, another man’s bike if there is a woman involved (or ex within, say, six months).

XMAS Stories

by Joelle (Xmas) Fraser

doesn’t want me to ride on another guy’s bike. “She’s with me,” he says. It’s about respect, and it goes both ways. The agreement seems fair, and it makes our relationship easy. When he rides without me, I don’t worry about it. When I go to a book signing alone to a poker run, he doesn’t worry. A lot of lady bikers miss the old school way to quickly know a guy’s availability. All you needed to do was check his pegs. Out—not available. Up—available. (No wonder folks yearn for those days when the “code” seemed simpler. Now we have FB and text messages to mess with people’s minds and hearts.) There’s a very elemental answer to why this issue, which may seem “high school” to an outsider, or just indicate simple insecurity or possessiveness, is so touchy. The answer is S-E-X. Think about it: when you ride with a guy, your legs are spread around his ass; your thighs are flush with his thighs; your boobs are pressed against his back (even if you try to have space there’ll be times when you’ll touch); and you’ve got a throbbing, vibrating engine under and between your crotches. Vroom, vroom! That won’t happen when you get a ride in a Ford pickup. Bike-passenger riding can be a sexually charged situation. And that’s why the topic causes trouble. So, take my advice and avoid the drama. As the old saying goes, “Ass, Grass, or Gas, No One Rides For Free.”

If it’s offered to you, that’s a different story, but then…who’s offering? And is there some strange motive afoot? More than one guy’s been busted when returning from a “solo” ride with his passenger pegs still out. Oops! Drama seems to drift around the biker world. Like I said, it’s complicated, so why push it? For the record, here’s my code: JC doesn’t give another woman a ride—unless I offer it to her or say it’s okay. Why? That’s my seat. JC feels the same. Tech Tips I

Winterizing

t’s that time of year again and if you’ve been listening to the 1000 pound heads in the weather world you know that they are predicting a colder than average winter, at least in the western region of the U.S. Great news for the drought slammed states, but maybe not so good for the high mileage/year round riders. If you end up parking your scoot through a good part of the winter, you’ll want to take care of a few maintenance items to ensure it’s ready to go when spring hits. The first item on the list is your battery. Unless you’re one of the few hardcore, all weather riders (not me), your bike may be sitting idle for some time. Batteries have a static discharge that will, over time, pull it down to just below useless. Motorcycle batteries are much more susceptible to this than their automotive counterparts. Battery tenders resolve this issue by providing a regulated charge that will bring the battery to a full state of charge and then reduce the output to maintain the battery without overcharging. If you don’t own a battery tender, GET ONE!

They are reasonably priced, easy to use, and it’s not uncommon to get 5 years of service or more from a good, maintenance free battery. Most tenders come with a pigtail that can be installed on the battery, making the connection a breeze. There are many products out there and the nomenclature can vary such as battery tender, trickle charger, and maintenance charger to name a few. Make sure the device you use states clearly in the product literature that it contains a mechanism (circuitry in the power adapter) that prevents overcharging. There are trickle chargers and low power chargers that do not switch over and can cook your battery. Give it a good bath! Road grime and bugs left on paint finishes for pro-

longed periods can monkey things up. Don’t store the bike near ozone emitting devices like electric motors, freezers, furnaces, etc. The gasses created by these can deteriorate rubber parts. Changing fluids is important as well. The transmission and primary are not so critical if the mileage on the last change is low, but engine oil is a must. By-products of combustion and condensation can wreak havoc on the inside of your engine. Check tire pressures. Keep them inflated properly while the bike is stored. Last, and definitely not least, is the fuel. Fuel stabilizer is a wonderful thing. Gas sitting stagnant for prolonged periods does nasty things to fuel delivery systems, and doesn’t burn worth a damn either! Add a shot of stabilizer (quantity varies by manufacturer, read the directions) and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute. You can also drain the fuel, but the former option keeps you ready for that occasional warm day that just begs for a ride. If your bike is carbureted, shut off the fuel valve and run the bike until it stalls which will empty the float bowl. That’s it for this month. Ride safe and good wrenching. Biggest Little City Arch

STREET VIBRATIONS 2015 Fall Rally:

Music – Metal - Motorcycles

September 23-27 (Reno, NV): Our neighbors to the east in Nevada roared to life for one of the biggest and iconic events held in the western states brought to you by Roadshows, Inc (www.roadshowsreno.com). Each year thousands of riders converge into Reno, Nevada with a large number of riders coming from Northern California, this rally is an annual tradition and for those folks in Northern Nevada – it’s a way of life. As for us in NorCal, the fun starts the second you swing your leg over your bike! It does not matter which route you take to get here, it is going to be a scenic ride and for some that is a much needed break from the daily grind. But rest assured the fun has only just begun because once you arrive in Reno it is time to get your party on. This event will keep you running with several things to see and do with poker runs and scavenger hunts sponsored by Silver Legacy Resort Casino, Sands Regency Casino Hotel and Geico. For those of you that were smart enough to get a VIP pass - you had secure street parking right downtown close to the casinos and of course the hundreds of vendors that come out to show you the new and exciting products they have to offer. Attendees could stop for a “selfie” opportunity under Reno’s “Biggest Little City in the World” arch and if you time it just right, you might catch a slow race happening just below it. Across the street in either direction, you could stop and listen to a constant flow of top notch bands to rock your world on either the Jagermeister stage or the Harrah’s Casino stage. And speaking of stages, downtown Reno was filled with music in the air in any given direction as it appeared that every side street had a stage with a band kicking out great tunes! Kicking the Fall Rally week off on Thursday night was award winning, Rascal Flatts performing at the Reno Events Center. Other stand out bands for us was Beatles Flashback on Thursday and The Fryed Brothers Band on Saturday – and we all know that “the party ain’t over ‘till the Fryeds go home!” Several beauties from the International Bikini Team were also in town for a bikini

competition consisting of over $10,000 in cash and prizes, trips and modeling contracts, but is was San Diego’s Rebecca Nicole who was crowned ‘Miss Street Vibrations’ with another local beauty from Reno, Kristy Dennis as the 2nd runner-up! Meanwhile on Friday and Saturday nights at the Sands Regency Casino was another popular competition involving the fun-loving ladies of Street Vibes who willingly strut their stuff while wearing wet t-shirts to get an approving crowd to toss as many mardi-gras style beads in their direction. The John Dawson Band entertained the awaiting crowd into the mood with his talent and humorous onstage performance as the girls were getting properly prepared. Across town, Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson also got into the rally with bands, vendors and hosting the start location of the world famous 19th Annual Cat House Run proudly brought to you by Reno’s Red and White. And down Roadshows Randy Burke the street, Road Rider of Reno hosted this year’s ‘Baddest Bagger’ competition with some heavy hitters in the lineup including NorCal shops like Bagger Design, James Dean’s Rebel Design, Citrus Heights Victory and Dirtbag Cycles all showing extremely well. But it was a Normal Lovelace’s gold bagger taking the top Stan and Steve The Motor- prize as Reno’s ‘Baddest cycle Attorneys with Cassie Bagger’ with his 2009 Road King. Also, Throttle Girl (www.throttlegirl.net) was there at her new studio and retail location keeping the 2 wheels of her mission rolling forward. Here’s a bit of trivia for you - did you know that as a long-distance endurance rider, Throttle Girl is the fastest female to cross the country from Florida to California? So next time you see her you will know that not only is she a pretty face - this girl can ride! Throttle Up! Another shared annual ritual for bikers during the Fall Rally is to trek up the hill to Virginia City as hundreds of bikes line up on both

Once again beads are rewarded to those daring to display their best attributes for all to see! Not long after the weekend whirlwind of events subsides from the Fall Rally, Roadshows, Inc begins ramping up for their 2016 Spring Rally. Mark this one on the calendar as it is another fun way to kick off a new riding season. Heed our advice and take advantage of the rally VIP packages which are filled with special coupons and discounts from the local area businesses. See you in Reno next time!

ARIZONA: Yarnell - Tempe – Jerome - Sedona

W

ith the arrival of late fall and colder weather, we kinda did the snow bird thing again and rolled on down to the warmer climes of the Arizona desert – specifically to Tempe, AZ in the Valley of the Sun for a couple of weeks of baseball and riding. Not too bad! Our big adventure for the trip was up to Sedona via SR89 and 89A. Starting out early in the morning from Tempe, we took I10 to the 303 and after catching SR93, made our way into Wickenburg. From there we putted out into the desert on SR89. It’s very scenic all around, especially the looming Weaver Mountains ahead. Once in those mountains, you’ll enjoy lots of twists and switchbacks before pulling into the small town of Yarnell. A couple of years ago the town made the news because of the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire that took the lives of 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Hotshots are firemen that deal with all kinds of wildfires. When needed they will travel from state to state risking all to protect people and property. There are 107 such organizations in the U.S. Outside Yarnell that day, 20 Granite Mountain members answered the call of duty. They were up in the rocky hills fighting a large brush and scrub fire when the wind shifted, blowing the fire in the direction of town. Although in a safe burnt out area, they decided to try and race down and get ahead of the fire. With windblown fireballs starting new

fires, they ended up getting trapped. Hurriedly they made a clearing and deployed their protective fire blankets, but the fire was too close and too hot. Only one came back. The only member to make it out had been assigned as the lookout. After informing his guys of the wind shift via radio and wild fire coming toward him, a member of another hotshot team drove in and got him down to safety. 8300 acres and 127 structures were destroyed. As for firefighters, except for 9/11, it was the largest loss of life in almost 100 years. www. outsideonline.com. Search for 19-True-Story. After breakfast at the Family Diner, we checked out the memorial for the Granite Mountain crew. Not quite completed, it will eventually be situated in a beautiful little park. A larger state park is also in the works. www.yarnellhillmemorialfund. org. Up the street a bit, you’ll also find the Shrine of St Joseph (the patron saint of Happy Homes). Built up on the rocky hillside, you follow a rustic path and along it are the fourteen stages of the cross. Jesus from the last supper to his placement in the tomb. A perfect place for some quiet and solitude. The Shrine was also a casualty of the fire. The stations themselves were mostly spared, but several outbuildings such as the retreat and gift shop were destroyed. www.stjoseph-shrine.org. Back on SR89 we made our way up to Prescott. Enjoyed the cruise through the valley and then the nice twisty mountain ride about 10 miles out of town. Since the Granite Mountain Hotshots were based out of Prescott, we stopped by the firehouse. Fireman Ralph Lucas was very informative and

Verde Valley Outside Jerome gave us a good rundown on the whole event. He also directed us to the gravesite memorial. Impressive and sobering at the same time. A little ways out of Prescott we jumped on 89A and headed out across the valley floor to our next stop, Jerome. As you enter the mountains again, the pavement begins to twist and bend. See a pattern here? Once at the top, the view down into the Verde Valley is awesome! Way in the distance, you can actually see the red cliffs around Sedona. Jerome reminds you of one of those European villages. Not the structures, but the narrow streets and that the city is built up high on the side of the mountain. We decided to take a break at the Vaqueros Cantina.

Some chips and salsa sounded good. Nice place, nice town. On the road again, it was down the mountain and on to Sedona. As you near Sedona, the scenery becomes more and more spectacular. Huge red rock outcroppings and color laden cliffs. Since we got a deal, we checked into the Sedona Rouge Hotel and spent the rest of the day enjoying the sights and walking through town. We had to get back to Phoenix the next day, so our

Red Rock State Park trip was only an overnighter. We still wanted to see Red Rock State Park though. So after a nice breakfast at the Coffee Pot, we took the Red Rock Loop down to the park. Lots of hiking trails to go along with the visual treats. Red Rock Crossing is also a must. It’s up the loop road apiece and located in Crescent Moon Park. A short hike along Oak Creek and you’ll be practically at the base of the famous Cathedral Rock. As much as we hated to, it was time to head out. We chose the Sedona Scenic Hwy (SR179) as our route out of town. Aw, the sights! It was a great couple of days. Well, except for the rain storm on I17. Hey, nothing wrong with a little soaking now and then I guess. Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth

EXECUTIVE CHOPPERS I n Roseville California at 2115 March Road, you will find a shop with a long history in the motorcycle industry. Executive Choppers is well known for its fabrication and the Harman Holland front ends that they still produce there to this day. As you can see, this shop knows how to fabricate just about anything that you can dream up. But what you might not know is that this shop is open for regular service and repairs to go along with their custom work. And as Drag Specialties dealers, Executive Choppers can get the parts that you need for your bike quickly and also install them for you at a very reasonable price. And although, the shop is well known for building top end custom bikes you will be surprised by their down-to-earth approach to doing business. Give Executive Choppers a call at (916)780-6580 if you’re looking for parts or service and let them help you out.

Thunder Roads MagazineÂŽ Northern California 20

As for this bike‌it is an example of why Bill Holland and his work have been featured in magazines all around the world and why they have been or part of a few TV shows made for motorcycle nuts like us, shows like Orange County Choppers, and a few others. If you dig the look and function of the girder front end you are in good company because Paul Sr. from Orange County Choppers has them on a few of his bikes. Pretty much everything on this bike is custom and fabricated right here at Executive Chopper Paint is done by James Dean of Rebel Design another Roseville local - just around the corner from the shop. Hope you enjoy - we sure did. Article by Stan Hill. Photos contributed by T3 Design Studios / Models: Breanna & Brook

Carson City Harley-Davidson’s

15th ANNUAL SEPTEMBER BIKEFEST

September 24-26 (Carson City, Nevada): During the last week of September, the Carson City Harley-Davidson’s 15th Annual Bikefest was hopping with activity. For starters, some of the best vendors around were here to display their new products along with several NorCal bike builders with the likes of Manteca’s Binford Custom Cycles, Nickell’s Customs in Lodi and Paughco’s Custom Cycles from just down the road in Carson City along with a few others. Personally, I was really looking forward to see the folks at WindVest Motorcycle Products; I have had my eye on one of their windscreens on my personal ride since I rode a demo a bike installed with a WindVest (www. windvest.com) on it. This weekend, WindVest President Doug Dober personally installed a windscreen onto my ride and I couldn’t be happier! Thank You – WindVest! I would highly encourage you to check out this state-of-the-art stylish wind protection from Morgan Hill, California. Inside Carson City H-D, the show room registers and sales staff were busy and it appeared as if more than just a few new and used bikes were finding a new home. Not to mention, the service department was in full throttle as bikes rolled in that were in need of some TLC. As we wandered out and about in the extra-large Carson City Harley-Davidson Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 25

continued from previous page parking lot, it was evident that this dealership made a perfect place to host an event of this magnitude. LivFast Moto Jumps were on hand to WOW the crowd with their aerial acrobatics catching some “big air” as they launched their dirt bikes from ramp to ramp. On the asphalt, extreme Harley stunt riders from ILLConduct pushed the limits of what a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is capable of in terms of handling, riding wheelies and shredding the rubber off of their back tires. Then on the flipside, the Carson City Sheriff’s Department put on an advanced riding skill exhibition to make the most agile riders feel the need to up their riding skills. Imagine of all of this happening inside five acre beer garden (minus the long lines) along with fireworks and a steady stream of live tribute bands like Night Moves - a Bob Seger Tribute Band to Skynnyn Lynnyrd – a Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band to set the tone for the event on Friday night. On Saturday, the dealership brought in a Santana tribute band(Caravanserai) and an Aerosmith tribute band (Aerorocks) followed up by Journey Unauthorized who drew a huge crowd before the Saturday night event headliner - WAR took the stage. This was a treat for us as we had never seen WAR in concert before and hearing their song list was truly a blast to the past! Thanks to the event sponsors Max Casino, Kirbys Law, Budweiser, Fox11 My 21

TV, Tahoe Tenderloins, ESP. Carson City Harley-Davidson once again did a phenomenal to ensure a fun filled, exciting place to hang out. A place to get some great food while being entertained with all the activities sights and sounds that you could only find right there. If you are ever rolling through Carson City, Nevada, be sure to make Carson City Harley-Davidson a must stop destination to check out their beautiful dealership and meet their friendly staff. We’ll see you there next September! Article and photos contributed by Stan and Terry Hill

RIDE PRIDE:

VIIISION 8 BALL

Thunder Roads Magazine速 Northern California 30

I

t was during a bike night in Roseville at James Dean’s Rebel Design that we met Tom Embry. I could tell immediately that this guy really has an eye for creating a classy, clean looking bike and after a couple of laps around Tom’s Vision that I hit him up about doing a shoot with us. We have never featured a custom Victory Vision before so we figured it was about time that this great American-made bike got its due. As you may have noticed that we tend to mostly feature bikes that are “riders”. Tom rides this one often making several trips to southern California, Las Vegas or Reno - you name it, he has ridden this bike there. And more often, he is accompanied by his girlfriend Brooke that was nice enough to model for us with his motorcycle. Tom loves his motorcycles and is very particular about how they look. And just a heads up for an upcoming feature of another one of Tom’s bikes - we are pretty sure that a lot of you have not seen anything like it. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Brooke

1st Annual Biketober Bike Show Rocktober Ride In October 24 (Hollister): After receiving an invite, I jumped at the opportunity to hang out with the folks at Hollister Powersports (www.hollisterpowersports.com) to be a guest judge for their inaugural Ride In Bike Show benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. I spent the day getting to check out some really cool bikes at the same time. I arrived just as things were starting to get rolling, the BBQ was getting fired up and some very nice raffle prizes were set out to encourage people to buy some raffle tickets. Since all the proceeds went to a great cause it was a win even if your number did not get called because all of the proceeds from the donations for the BBQ lunch went to the Wounded Warrior Project as well. While the entries into the bike show were still rolling in and getting their bikes polished and ready to go, I took the

opportunity to walk around this beautiful dealership. As an Indian, Victory, Slingshot, Honda, Kawasaki dealer - there is a lot to see! Before I made it through the front door, I was stopped dead in my tracks by the lineup of new Indian motorcycles that were out front. I was in awe of the new paint jobs on these bikes. My first thought was “Wow, the factory had really stepped it up in the paint department!” Then I bumped into the owners of Hollister Powersports, Rey and Angela who told me that these bikes are all examples of their new custom paint program. Indian sends their dealership raw bikes, so that they apply custom paint right here in Hollister - no two bikes will look the same. The quality is nothing short of spectacular and I found myself staring into the deep candy paint with the “ghosted in” Indian war bonnet logo on several of the gas tanks. If you have an Indian and are having thoughts of getting a custom paint job, you should take the time to check out what Hollister Powersports has to offer. The

custom paint program offers a very classy style that matches the traditional styling of the Indian Motorcycle Line. Right about this point the BBQ smelled really good as the tri-tip sandwiches were calling me, so I dropped a donation into the bucket for my lunch and chowed down before it was time to judge the bikes. I did not want to be distracted by hunger as this is a not a job to be taken lightly. Just ask my fellow guest judges Joe Lozano of Fresno Indian Riders Group, Mark Poling from Gilroy who was a Factory Member of Gilroy Indian and member of the Ephesians Motorcycle Club, Mike Corbin owner of Corbin Seat Company in Hollister, Joe Terra owner of Terax Exterminators and President of the Hollister Indian Riders Group. Each one of us, separately and carefully looked over all of the entries of 20+ bikes and we each made our choices for best in show - 1st place Reuben Edejer’s Board Track Racer (manufactured in Gilroy by www.sportsmanflyer.com), 2nd Place Richard Rodriguez’ custom red and gray Softail Harley-Davidson, 3rd Place Tony Brauner’s Captain America Harley-Davidson – which made me want to rush home and rewatch Easyrider. For the first annual event, this was a great turnout with lots of beautiful bikes entered into the show and all who entered deserving to win. The day was an overall big success as the parking lot was full of riders that had come by to check out the events and listen to the Band Change in the Weather rock out the parking lot. Huge thanks to Rey and Angela of Hollister Powersports for the invite and to all who showed up to make this a memorable fun day I am sure that this will be the first year of many more to come for this event. And stay tuned for more to come from this innovative and fun dealership soon from the Birthplace of the American Biker - Hollister. Article and photos by Stan Hill continued on next page…

2nd Annual USMC Birthday Bash November 10 (Hayward): The Marines MC Oakland and the Vikings MC really know how to throw a party. They had all the bases covered. The poker run started with many bikes riding to the Vikings Clubhouse in Hayward where the families met up with riders for a fun afternoon of partying making it a fun experience for all ages. They even had a jumpy House Castle for the kids. There was also a poker dartboard which seemed to be very popular with the riders. The Marine Corp was throwing a birthday party for their 240th USMC Birthday. This was the Marines MC 2nd annual celebration and I can’t wait for the next one. The raffle was one of the best I’ve ever seen. The first prize was a $500 spa vacation that kept everyone there awaiting

All you had to do was hit the horn button and flames would shoot out of the exhaust pipe about 6 feet. You could have barbecued a critter behind that bike! The home made tacos were awesome. Jose and Humberto of Taqueria Los Gallos fed us an awesome meal. Happy Birthday Marine Corp, once again you showed you are the first and

3 Annual Lords of Iron High Roller Run rd

October 17 (Santa Rosa): Bike clubs in Sonoma County have always been strong when it comes to supporting charities, and the Lords of Iron of Nor Cal always put on a great ride. Originally, this year they were putting together their ride for a children’s home that happened to have closed their doors the week of the ride. Since the tragic Valley Fire with so many people burned out of their homes, donations were sent to help the families in need in the Lake County Valley Fire victim. With over 150 bikers showing up for this ride it was a great turn out even with the gloomy skies overhead. As we set out on our 75 mile ride through the northern Sonoma county heading up to Cloverdale and stopping at our only stop at Ruth McGowan’s BrewPub for a

little rest and refreshments before heading to our final destination in Guerneville. Back on the road through the hills of Cloverdale and the back roads of Healdsburg it was a beautiful ride. As we got into the little town of Occidental, we hit a little rainstorm but no-one was deterred and we pressed on to the Northwood Golf course in Guerneville, where we were treated to great food from the owners Chris and Jeff. The entertainment was great as always and the raffles prizes were off the hook this year. Once again, the Lords of Iron pulled off another great ride. Looking forward to next year’s run. End of Year Thoughts As We Leave 2015 Behind.... * I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die. * Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong. * I totally take back all those times I put up a fight about taking a nap when I was younger. * There is great need for sarcasm emoji’s; the “finger”, the “mooning”, the “bite me”, the “suck this”......... * How the hell is anyone besides Martha Stewart supposed to know how to fold a damn fitted sheet? * Map Quest really needs to start their directions on prompt # 5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my own neighborhood. Also.....an Avoid This Neighborhood prompt would be greatly appreciated. * Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person actually died, right? * Why is it that bad decisions always make for really good stories? * You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you just know that you aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. * Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection...yet again. * I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call. * I totally disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay. * I have a very hard time deciphering that fine line between boredom and real hunger. * How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear, understand or really give a damn, about a word they said? * I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars

team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters....unite! * Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets stank. Jeans? Jeans seldom get dirty, and you can wear them all week. * Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket or finding their cell phone, but I’d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 2 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time! * Why is it the older you get, the more the movie “The Borrowers”, about how little gremlins take or move your “stuff” around, truly makes so much sense? * The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important to protect. __________________________________________________ An old lady dies and goes to heaven. She’s chatting it up with St. Peter at the “Pearly Gates” when all of a sudden she hears the most awful, blood-curdling screams. Don’t worry about that,’ says St. Peter, ‘It’s only someone having the holes drilled into her shoulder blades for the wings.’ The old lady looks a little uncomfortable but carries on with the conversation. A few minutes later, there are more blood curdling screams. ‘Oh my,’ says the old lady, ‘now what’s happening?’’ Not to worry,’ says St. Peter, ‘She’s just having her head drilled to fit the halo.’ ‘I can’t do this,’ says the old lady, ‘I’m going to Hell.’ ‘You can’t go to that nasty place,’ says St. Peter. ‘You’ll be raped and taken advantage of.’ ‘Maybe so,’ says the old lady, ‘but I’ve already got the holes for that.’

EVENT Thunder Roads Magazine速 Northern California 47

3rd Annual West Sacramento Christmas Basket Toy Run

October 10 (Sacramento): It was a perfect day to ride with close to 100 riders that showed up at Sacramento Harley-Davidson, to support the event. We were all welcomed by Tommy King, the events host and shared a few stories over coffee and pastries. At 10am sharp we took to the streets and rode in single file up river on scenic Garden Highway. There were smiles for miles as we closed in on our destination, knowing that we were doing a good thing. We were greeted at Swabbies on the River by Santa and his helpers. Santa filled FOUR bags with over 80 toys that were donated by the riders. You could hear Ho Ho Hoes from the jolly old guy throughout the area. Santa received more hugs than a new Teddy Bear gets on Christmas Day. He told me “It’s all about the LoVe and Doing the next right thing!” As we strolled into the seating area there was excitement in the air of

the FUN to follow. Santa came around and handed out candy. Several photos were shot with Santa and he took several orders for items wanted on Christmas Day. At 11 am, Sacramento’s Rockin Down the Hiway took the stage and shared two hours of Doobies HiTs. During this time Santa came up on the stage, shot several photos with the band. That is when he shared with the audience the BEST part about being Santa, and I quote, “Santa knows where all the naughty girls live”! WoW - what a concept.... Close to $1000 was generated from the raffle and 50/50. Prizes that were donated included a total of $300 in Sac H-D gift certificates, 5 lbs of Starbucks coffee beans, $25 5 Guys Hamburgers certificate, a family pass to the Towe Ford Museum, Mans wristwatch from Crest Jewelers, 50 new Walt Gray tees from White Hot Tees, several kitchen and BBQ appliances and much more.. .We wanted to thank the band members for another great show. Swabbies and Sac H-D, The Glaser’s Union, Dennis and Corine, Mike and Moira, Mary and Don, Judie and her date and all the others that participated in and worked so hard to make the event happen. We are so grateful for all the riders that attended to make the event a success. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AGAIN IN 2016. Article contributed by Tad Cornwell. Photos contributed by T3 Design Studios. W

hat a magical time of year December brings as we finally get to watch glistening snow fall into our beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. We are getting more and more rain in the valley in hopes our reservoirs and lakes start filling back up to normal. All the colorful leaves have left the trees and we see smoke coming from fire places all around NorCal. As we bundle up to ride through these winter months, we break out the leathers, layer up and take precaution of the slippery streets and crazy drivers rushing around like mice in a cage. The other thing December brings is Christmas. A time where children lay awake at night in hopes Santa will bring them everything they ever wanted---at the time. Their making their lists and putting them in the mail with a post marked stamp to the North Pole in hopes this large gray bearded fellow will bring them their wished upon presents. Hey I aint knockin Santa, as that old fat gray bearded fellow still stops by the Lujan house once a year to surprise our adult children with a gift or two. But let’s get one thing straight, without Christ in Christmas, there would be no tree, no gifts, no holiday, no eggnog and nothing to celebrate at all. Although the marketing guru’s have started placing holiday decorations in every store just after Halloween these days, we have to realize it’s just a ploy for you to shop early and spend more money. The true meaning of the Christmas holiday is to realize a savior was born that day for you, for me and for anybody and everybody. It was a day that was waited on hundreds and hundreds of years until that one glorious day that star shown and He was born. In the end, we know He gave his life unselfishly so that we may have life and that that would be the ultimate gift anyone could ever give for another. After the tree is up and all the shiny decorations have been placed upon it, have you ever just sat there in silence and

took in its brilliance? This year, turn down the lights, light a fire in the fireplace or light a candle in the background and sit there for awhile...maybe play some Christmas music to get in the mood and feel the magnificence of the season start to manifest in your heart. It should ignite a feeling of giving and of wonder as it is the best season of the year as most people are proned to give more than any other time of the year. Giving is wonderful, but receiving can also be a blessing. I’m not talking about a greedy type of receiving, but genuinely receiving a gift that you were in hope for or sometimes a gift you really were never expecting but received anyway. That is what we call prayer. If you are in hope for new pipes, new bars or new bags for Christmas this year, you better go see Santa ASAP! But if you are looking for a life to be changed, a marriage to be healed, a kid to get off drugs or your circumstances to get better, then you better seek the Christ that is in Christmas. You don’t have to go to the mall, or go to Macy’s, Sears or even leave your house for that matter. All you have to do is share a little, pray a little and give a little to have it make all the difference this holiday season. Merry Christmas from Thunder Road Biker Church Luke 2: 10 - “But the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news and great joy to all people”. (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan Luke: 3-11 - “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

CHRISTMAS PRIME RIB W/ HORSERADISH CREAM

Standing Beef Prime Roast; no Ribs Palmful of Thyme Palmful of Basil Palmful of Parsley

Mix all 3 in a small dish Take a jar of Dijon Mustard and rub it all over the Prime thoroughly. Now rub the 3 mix all over thoroughly and salt & pepper to taste. Roast in a pre-heated 500 degree oven. Place in a large roasting pan or one of the disposable heavy-duty foil pans. Roast apprx. 15 mins. until Prime is brown all over. Reduce oven temp to 350 degrees. Roast until a meat thermometer registers 110F for rare or 115F for medium-rare. Remember; the Prime wil continue to cook and the internal temp. will rise to the proper temp as it rests for 10 minutes, so do not overcook it. Remove Prime to a platter and just cover it with foil; don’t wrap or tuck it in. Pour a can of Beef Broth into your roasting pan and scrape the bottom for all the goody tidbits. Stir thoroughly until all combined. Strain through a mesh strainer and place in a gravy boat or glass bowl. If any fat rises to the top just skim off and throw away. For the Horseradish Cream Sauce: 3/4 cup of Heavy Cream, 1/4 cup of bottled Horseradish and 2 Tbls. Coarse Grain Mustard. Whip this all together until stiff. You can make this way ahead and just refrigerate and rewhip before serving. Slice up your Prime Rib in generous 1-1/2 pieces and pour the Au Jus all over nice and hot and place a big dollop of the Horseradish Cream in the middle of the Prime slice. Oh, baby....this hits you exactly in the right place. Perfection!

LITTLE ELVES MONKEY BREAD

1 Can of GRANDS Biscuits cut into 4ths. Then, cut the 1/4ths in 4ths again. Add 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of cinnamon in a gallon zip-lock bag. Add pieces of biscuits. Shake until every single piece is totally covered really well.

Melt down 2 Sticks of Real Butter (salted kind) in a glass bowl in microwave (cover with Cling Wrap but poke a hole to vent) Add anothe 1/2 cup of brown sugar into melted butter. Put pieces of biscuits into a bundt cake pan and pour melted butter & brown sugar all over top. Smoosh down any pieces into mixture that are sticking up. Bake @ 350 mins. or until you see it’s golden brown. Put an oversized plate over top of cake pan and invert very fast and flip that baby and remove the pan and all those juices just flow all over the place. Just take your hands and pull from the cake and either put high quality vanilla ice cream over top or homemade whip cream. Hello!! Totally Audacious!

WHISKEY PEAR PUNCH

2 Ounces of Jack Daniel’s Whiskey 1/2 Ounce of Orange Liquer 2 Ounces of Pear Juice 1 Dash of Bitters 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg (dry spice is fine) Optional * Orange peel for garnish If you’re making for a large group, place all in a gallon glass punch bowl and just do the math to equal out to the number of guests you have. Since you won’t be able to shake each one individually, use a whisk and just gently whisk. Cut orange peel DO rim each champagne glass and then put a shaker of Nutmeg out so everyone can sprinkle on top. These are phenomenal ice-cold but also really good served warm for Tailgating or any get-together. Cheers!

SAINT NICKARITA

1-1/2 Ounces of Patron Gold Tequila 1/2 Ounce Cranberry Juice 1 Ounce of Lime juice 1 Ounce of Orange Liquer 1 Ounce of Club Soda 1 Cup of Fresh or Frozen Cranberries; thawed Combine all and shake w/ ice. Top w/club soda. Garnish with cranberries dropped into ice-cold drink. Cheers to Saint Nick!

MY TWO CENTS:

How long am I supposed to wait? Part 2

If you read last month’s issue of Thunder Roads NorCal, then you know what this is about. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go find last month’s issue and catch up with the rest of us. The question is how long are we supposed to wait at a red light until we can legally roll through while the light is still red? In California we have “CA Vehicle Code 21800... (d) (1) the driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection, and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so. This subparagraph shall apply to traffic control signals that become inoperative because of battery failure.” You can recite this to a cop after you get pulled over and put the fire out on your leg from the bike overheating. Let me know how well this works for you? Basically, we’re on our own when it comes to this red light issue. I spoke to two traffic cops about this subject and I hope I never get pulled over by the first cop. The first cop I talked to seemed like he didn’t trust anyone and when I walked up to him I said, “Hi. My name is Al Cagle and I was wondering if I could ask you a question?” He said, ”Sir! You want to take a step back please?! And he changed his stance as if it was going to get physical. I took a step back and said “Whoa! I just want to ask you a question.” He changed his stance to face me and he said “Go ahead” I asked him about red lights not changing for motorcycles and he said “The law is the law and my job is to uphold the law! If you run a red light I will give you a citation and you can explain your problem to the court.” I said “Ok. Good to know”. Then I turned around and walked away and thought to myself “This guy’s a jerk and he just treated me like shit! I must look like someone who kicked his ass or took his lunch money when he was a kid.” The second cop was way cooler. He said “This is a grey area. I know sometimes the sensors don’t pick up the bikes presence, so if it’s safe and convenient, sometimes putting the bike on the kickstand works, but it’s not always safe to do so, especially if you have a passenger or the bike is loaded up with gear. If I see a bike is waiting longer than it should I would let him go if it is safe to do so. But not all traffic cops are going to think like this. It’s basically a roll of the dice if you get cited or not.” This cop was friendly and he didn’t act like a guard in the prison yard surrounded by inmates or treat me like a criminal. He seemed like a good guy and spoke like a fair person. Like I said, we’re out here on our own when it comes to this red light issue. There’s the letter of the law and the spirit of the law and it is a roll of the dice if you get a ticket or not. This reminds me that the police are just like any group out there, some are cool and some….. Well, not so much. I know it’s not much information but it’s good to know where we stand and I guess we have to use what we learned as children, look both ways then go……Go like hell!! That’s my two cents. Merry Christmas! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 53

Sherry Brace

I

started riding behind my brother and best friend in 2002. I hadn’t ridden much before then but once I got a taste of riding - it was instantly in my blood. I rode with him every chance I got. My husband would call my brother and ask him to come pick me up when he could tell I was getting restless. I continued to ride behind my brother until cancer consumed him and took him from us. A short time later, his widow called to see if I had a motorcycle license because she wanted me to ride with her. I didn’t have one. About 2 hours after that she called and said, ‘meet me at Freedom Rides Trike in Lincoln, I think I found your bike.’ When I got there, I walked in and went straight to a Harley trike. I sat on the trike for about 10 minutes before I called my husband to come check it out. I had made up my mind long before he got there. This bike has changed my life in so many ways. There is absolutely nothing like hitting the road with one or many bikers. And the bonus is the relationship that I now have with my brother’s widow - my riding sister. It truly is a way of life. There are no words to explain my life today…except, ”yes, I am living the dream!”
