pril is here and with it also comes lots of events. The event calendar (located at the back of each issue) seems to be growing by the day! This is a good thing! We want you to continue submitting ALL of the events going on in your area. Honestly, Terry and I would also love to attend and be a part of them each and every one, but it is just not physically possible. That being said, we are always open to article and photo submissions from an event organizer or volunteer to help tell the story about your event. All it takes is just a short paragraph explaining what the event was about and a digital camera, in fact some of the cameras on your cell phones are good enough for print. We can’t promise that we will get it in, but if we can find the space - we will! Shoot us an email at thunderroadsnorcal@yahoo.com with any questions. Who knows you might enjoy doing it and want to hit the road as a regular contributor. Speaking of events, April is Autism Awareness month so although there are tons of great causes out there it would be great to get involved in at least one event that is raising money for research, it seems that every year so many more families are affected. It would be really awesome if bikers were a part of figuring out why and how this is occurring. So saddle up and take a ride for Autism. Check out the article about our weekend getaway to The Inn of the Lost Coast in Shelter Cove. We are interested in doing many more getaways like this with just a small group of readers and friends so if you know of a great place that would welcome motorcycle riders, please let us know about them! Next time we are planning an escape for the weekend – JOIN US! It is a relaxing and fun time and you will be sure to go home with some new good friends. Like us on Facebook at Thunder Roads Northern California to know when and where our next adventure will take us! Rock Hard – Ride FREE – Ride Often

RIDE PRIDE: VICTORY MOTORCYCLES OF CITRUS HEIGHTS / ROCKFORD FOSGATE BIKE The crew at Victory of Citrus Heights (www.victorymotorcyclesch.com) have been pumping out one custom Victory motorcycle after another these past few years. And they are definitely getting noticed on the national stage by winning the 2015 Best Bagger in Sturgis along with many other awards along the way with several of their bikes. In fact, the Rockford Fosgate executives knew right where to go when they wanted a custom bike to display in their booth during the Consumer Electronics Show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas. This is one also happens to be one of my personal favorites that these guys have built so far! Not to mention, James Dean of Rebel Design definitely hit the mark with the paint. Take a look at what they did to make this bike the beauty that it is. Article by Stan Hill. Photos contributed by masburg.com / Model: Ashley

Tech Tips I

Carburetors - Part III

n Part II we discussed the S&S Super E/G carburetors. This month, we’ll cover the Mikuni HSR series carburetors. With brevity in mind, we’ll hit all the points germane to this very popular carburetor. A complete copy of the tuning manual, including illustrations and parts listing can be downloaded from the Mikuni website, or shoot me a note and I’ll attach a copy via e-mail.

are turning the mixture screw in to fully closed on any carburetor (to check position or baseline the setting before tuning), most product literature will state somewhere in bold letters “GENTLY SEATED.” They’re not kidding. Over-tightening will ruin the seat which is integral to the carb body. There’s no repair or fix, it’s junk. Next is the main circuit. Hang in there, this one’s a doozy. The first component is the jet needle. This alone affects two different throttle positions. The straight portion of the needle controls just off idle to ¼ throttle, the tapered portion ¼ - ¾.

Unlike the butterfly style carbs, the Mikuni is a flat slide design. The performance benefit of a flat slide carburetor is that air flow through the venturi is very smooth and relatively unobstructed. While the butterfly carb uses a throttle plate to regulate airflow, and this plate remains in the path of airflow, the flat slide opens by lifting upwards into the upper body of the carb allowing a straight shot into the intake. The Mik also has more tunable circuits than many of the other fuel mixers. All of this results in superior performance with a remarkable throttle response. In the tuning department, different manufacturers use different terminology and procedures. While S&S uses engine RPM for reference, Mikuni uses throttle position. To start, stick masking tape to the throttle grip and housing for “witness marks.” Mark positions on the tape in ¼ throttle increments from idle to full open. The Mikuni has four interdependent circuits: Choke, idle, main, and accelerator pump. Unlike the stock CV carburetor, the choke is a tunable circuit, and its name is somewhat of a misnomer. A choke, found on older carbs, actually restricts air flow and as a result, increases fuel delivery (rich air/fuel ratio). The choke on the Mikuni and other modern carburetors is actually an enrichening device. It has its own circuit and delivers a metered flow of air/fuel mixture without restricting air flow. It probably goes without explanation that this device is used for cold starts. To what extent can vary depending on how the carb is tuned and other variables.

If adjustment is required in the former, the needle must be changed. Mikuni jet kits contain different size needles to accommodate these changes. They can also be purchased from your local shop and other parts sources. If adjustment is needed from ¼ - ¾ throttle, the needle can be raised and lowered accordingly. To lean the mixture, lower the needle, to go richer, raise the needle. A clip holds the needle in position. The last component of the main circuit is the main jet. It affects throttle from ¾ to WFO. This is relatively cut and dried. A simple jet change up or down handles this area. I do like to make changes no less than two sizes. One size at a time sometimes makes the performance change less remarkable and harder to detect.

The second circuit is idle and covers the throttle position from idle to 1/8. There are two tunable components; the pilot air screw and the pilot jet. Back when we discussed tuning the S&S carb I mentioned that some carbs use an air screw rather than a fuel screw for adjusting the idle mixture. The Mikuni is one of them. The default setting for the air screw is two turns out. If best idle is achieved with less than one turn out, the pilot jet is too small (lean). If more than two and a half turns out, the jet is too large (rich). As a side note, if you Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

The final circuit of the Mik is the accelerator pump. Unlike most carbs that use one screw, the Mikuni uses two. One screw determines when the pump activates while the other controls deactivation. In other words, between the two screws, timing and duration are set for the pump.

The horizontal screw (#1) determines activation. To bring it in sooner, turn the screw out. Later, turn it in. The vertical screw (#2) controls when the pump stops. Adjust this so pump duration ends somewhere between 2/3 and ¾ throttle. In the end, you want the least amount of accelerator pump that will allow a quick snap of the throttle without the engine cutting out or coughing. Any more than that and you’re wasting fuel (indicative of a puff of black smoke when you whack the throttle). Lastly, there’s a feature on this carb that few others have. The idle speed adjuster is an easy access thumb screw. This enables the idle adjustment during warmup without using the choke (enrichener) the entire time.

That’s the basics for the Mikuni carburetor. No pretense of objectivity whatsoever, I love this carburetor! Japanese engineering outdid themselves on this one. Although tuning is a bit more complex, the fuel delivery has unsurpassed precision. Would I chuck my stock CV carb and replace it with this one? Not necessarily. Many years ago I walked into a shop because I was having some trouble with my stock Keihin CV. Before I could finish explaining the symptoms, the “mechanic” said throw that thing in the garbage and get your-self one of these – pointing to an aftermarket product on the shelf. Further inspection revealed a small pin hole in the diaphragm. A cheap fix compared to a new carburetor. There are numerous reasons to go with an aftermarket mixer: Performance upgrades that exceed the stocker’s ability to feed the new appetite, replacing a damaged carburetor, building a power train from scratch, etc. Placing a bandage on an otherwise cheap fix is poor advice.Craig Griswold and Mary Kirby are the owners of Two Gunners Custom Iron in Penn Valley. Ride Destinaton: OROVILLE – QUINCY – INCLINE VILLAGE, NEVADA

W

ell people, between work and the horrible (but needed) weather last month, we weren’t able to get out for any kind of significant ride. So we thought we would revisit one of our more memorable rides from years back - a blast from the past if you will. Hopefully, we’ll be back on track next month. A while ago, we decided to make an overnight trip to North Lake Tahoe, but this time take the long way. We headed north on Hwy 99 from Sacramento and got on Hwy 70 to Marysville – stopping there for some mojo and a bite to eat at Starbuddies. We continued on up to Oroville. Now the scenery starts to get real nice. Took a butt break at the bridge over Lake Oroville. Great views and you can hike down to the lake if you care to. The next stop was one of TRM NorCal’s advertiser’s Scooter’s Café - a great biker hangout. Had appetizers and met the owner, Scooter Dan. We chatted about the good old days in Sacramento. Later we said our goodbyes and headed towards Quincy. A few miles up the road a car bridge passes over a train bridge. Looked like a nice photo op, so I pulled over into a little alcove and got the camera out. It was going to be a quick pic, so we didn’t get off the bike or shut down the motor - I just stood up to clear the windshield and started focusing the camera. A minute or so later Cindy asks me if I smelled something. I say “yeah, smells like oil.” Then I hear her yell “the bikes on

fire!” “What?” I looked down to the right and I see flames. “Oh shit!” I shut the engine off, threw the kickstand down and hopped off. She had already jumped down, pulled off her helmet and was smothering the flames with her beanie and facemask. I grabbed my gloves and started to do the same, but it was pretty much out by then. As I was leaning over I noticed the oil filler cap was dangling by the dipstick, so I shoved it back in. What a mess! Oil all over. What happened was that the edge of my chaps pulled the oil cap out when I stood up to take the picture. Oil started bubbling out of the bag and on to the pipes. Thanks to Cindy’s quick reaction the fire was out pretty quick. She got the “fireman of the day” award! The only damage was a little blistering on the pipe covers and some burned oil on the

clamps. We pulled out some rags and wiped everything down. I fired it up and let it idle. Everything seemed OK, so on with the show. There’s a nice rest stop up the road, right on the Feather River. A lot of rocks and trees. A short walk to the water. We made it to Quincy without further incident, explored a little, then headed for the best fish and chips I’ve ever had at Mill Creek Fish N Chips. They have a great burger selection featuring wild game, if you dare. If you’re looking for a cold one - you can walk across the parking lot to the EASTSIDE Public House – another TRM NorCal supporter. After lunch we stayed on Hwy 70 to Hallelujah Junction and then headed into Nevada on Hwy 395, a nice scenic ride. Even the wide-open valley is impressive, especially the initial descent out of the forest. We continued south on Hwy 395 to the Mt. Rose Highway (431). We enjoyed the curves, although since this was April, there was snow and I was being extra cautious. We stopped along the way to take some photos. We spent the night in Incline Village at the Parkside Inn. It’s a really good value. Nice outside, clean rooms, out front or canopy parking. Summer rates may be different but we paid $70. And for dinner that night we decide on Austin’s which is located right around the corner. Had a few drinks with dinner, which was very good, especially the clam chowder. We looked back on our adventure and even laughed about the bike catching on fire. Yeah, it’s funny now. For the trip home we took Hwy 28 to Hwy 89 north to Truckee and I80 home to Sacramento Side bar: Same thing happened in Reno on the way to Sturgis. No fire though. We caught it quick. So, if you ride a Fat Boy and have your chaps on, be careful. Also, this was our first article for Thunder Roads back in October 2012. Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth

36th Annual

Sweetheart Run

February 14 (Auburn): C& E Auburn Indian and V-Twin was ready first thing in the morning for this annual run that has been a NorCal staple for quite some time now. The 36th Annual Sweetheart Run has stood the test of time and only seems to be growing in its popularity as riders that come out for this event will usually come back for the next one bringing more friends with them. You cannot find a group that is more passionate about the motorcycling community than the crew at C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin, led by owners Carlo and Emma Lujan. Carlo and Emma have paved the way and are great examples to all of us who ride that to get out there and have a great time on our bikes. The dealerships Indian Riders Motorcycle group

along with the Gold Country Harley Riders volunteered showing up in force to help with the event. They did an outstanding job getting bikes in and out as well as checking the riders in. The topic for the day was just how great the weather was with a perfect spring-like day in mid February. It was a perfect time to dust off the old sled and give it a good run through the foothills. The route takes riders out of Auburn on Hwy 49 and across the scenic Foresthill Bridge before dropping into the American River Canyon and tackling the twisty uphill climb to the town of Cool with a long line of bikes snaking their way to the first stop of the day to historic Georgetown. We have no idea of just how many people showed up for the ride but it was enough to completely fill the historic town of Georgetown with bikes. We stopped alongside the road to get pictures of the pack riding and got there later to see all the bikes down both sides of the main street along with two more rows of bikes parked down the center of the road. From there it was off to another long time biker favorite - the Coloma Club where lunch was waiting for all the hungry riders. The dust was getting kicked up out back as the Buzztones playing some great tunes that kept the party rolling on for the next few hours. Of course, they are always some fantastic raffle prizes to give out to top off what was to be a near perfect day of riding and hanging out with good friends. e’re off to the movies with a biker movie unlike any other that has come before it. Recently, we got a call from “Goodtime Charlie” of Bikers Inner Circle to join him and his crew along with a cast of characters at a long time biker hangout in Rancho Cordova. Off we went to the Tumbleweed Bar and Grill for the filming of a scene in his upcoming movie. Who knows we might even see ourselves as extras in the movie – that is as long as we can stay off the cutting room floor?! We had a great time hanging with the cast and are looking forward to seeing the finished product at the end of the year. We will keep you all posted on when and where you might be able to view it. You can also get updates on the Bikers Inner Circle Facebook page about Rebel On The Highway – or when you tune into B.I.C. Radio – 24/7 Biker Radio! #1 Biker Radio for some good old-fashioned biker music, interviews and conversations. RUN FOR THE WALL XXVIII Mark Your Calendars! The “Run For The Wall” in Washington D.C. (www.rftw.org) is happening for May 18 – 28. Trust me, this is the run that will separate the men from the boys. Now don’t be a whiney baby and make up a bunch of excuses like “I can’t take off work for a month” or “my wife won’t let me”. Just tell your boss at work it’s a veterans and non-veterans mission to support our veterans and the POW and MIA that never made it home. We all ride for those who can’t. Remind him that if it wasn’t for our Vet’s, POW’s, and MIA’s - there wouldn’t be a business here and we would all be speaking a different language. The run starts in Rancho Cucamonga and ends in Washington D.C. It takes 10 days to get there. Some days you might only ride 80 miles and the next maybe 300 miles. They stop at some V.A. hospitals, military bases, schools and memorials. They are on a tight schedule so there won’t be much sightseeing. They will tell you that you are on a mission and you can do your sightseeing on your way home. Now I’m not going to lie to you - it’s kind of a hard ride. They want you to ride in close quarters so you have to be on your game. They give you a couple days to adjust to the pack. It’s all worth it, the people you meet and all the towns and cities you go thru across America is a life changing experience. If you don’t shed a tear somewhere along the way then there is something seriously wrong with you. A couple times I got choked up when a Vietnam Vet lost it and I grab him and we held each other and cried like two little babies. It’s a very healing experience for everyone. To see all the overpasses lined with people and fire trucks cheering you on all

the way across the states. If you’re not that patriotic now you will be when you go on this mission! There are 3 different routes you can choose from: a southern route, a Midway route and a Central route. I personally like the Midway route - it follows Old Route 66 on Hwy 40. All three routes leave at the same time from Rancho Cucamonga and arrive in Washington D.C. on the same day. Now we have a party and a lot of stories! Next day we all ride to the Capital Mall and meet up with Rolling Thunder. Last year there was over a million bikes on the mall and believe it or not it was well organized. The run ends at the Vietnam Wall where we lay a wreath. On the way home you’re on your own. We were with three of our friends on the ride and two of them lived in Michigan. We took off up the east coast for awhile then back to New York then thru New York State, I didn’t know New York had a state! It was beautiful just like Vermont. We headed up to Niagara Falls then into Canada on our way to Michigan to drop off Gary and Bill. The rest of the way home was dodging storm clouds back to California. If you’re interested in going on this awesome ride you can contact “EZ “ at doncburns@gmail.com . They meet once a month at Rudy’s Hideaway in Rancho Cordova - off Hwy 50 in Sacramento. They also go on a little ride after their luncheon thru the foothills. Now get out there and support our Veterans - you’ll never be prouder to be an American. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:

SUPER SHOX FOR HARLEY DYNA’S AND BAGGERS

Just about everyone knows that stock Harley suspension leaves a lot to be desired. I have been running a pair of entry level aftermarket shocks on my 96 FXDS for a couple years now, and I thought my bike rode great. That was until Brian at Super Shox (www.supershox.com) hooked me up with a pair of their new shocks for Dyna’s. I had no idea that my bike could ride so good. When I installed these shocks on my bike, I noticed an instant difference in the ride and handling. I feel much more confident leaning my bike over in turns now and the Chicken Strip on my rear tire got huge. These shocks make my bike ride so much better, that I wonder to myself why I never upgraded to a high end shock like these. The ease and amount of adjustability is amazing. Simply rotate the top ring by hand and use the handy markings on the shock to set the preload to the best ride. Super Shox includes a chart to make this even easier, with suggested settings for combined weight of rider and passenger. At a list price of $629 plus shipping, Super Shox are priced competitively with other name brand shocks, but the styling of these most definitely sets them apart. Super Shox also have a built in rubber bumper to ease jarring if they bottom

out, but I haven’t felt them bottom out yet. These shocks are close to the stock length, but they did lower my bike about 1/4 inch so these work great for people with shorter legs. There are bearings instead of bushings on the mounts which absorbs even more of the small bumps. All in all, these shocks are a must buy. For more information, call (847) 548-7469 or go online to www.supershox. com . By the way, Super Shox are also made for Baggers. I highly recommend getting yourself a set of these shocks. You’ll be glad you did. Article and photos contributed by Forrest Coss

15TH ANNUAL WILD BILLS TATTOO-A-THON

Roxanne and I presenting the earnings of our 15th Annual TATTOO-A-THON to Carla Goetzman RN. Lauren Dillon RN and Stephanie Mateer MD.

Jose, Rocky, Ansel, Ronnie, Dan, Tony, Andrew and my Roxanne. Just a part of the great people that help us every year.

February 20 (Roseville): Last year, UC Davis Children’s Hospital treated over 80,000 children. This annual event that benefits the UC Davis Children’s Hospital brings in tattoo artists who want to give back to the community. You will see the regular talented crew from Wild Bills Tattoo (Roxanne Morales, Rocky Cali, Steve Maycock, Scott Sprouse, Andrew Wagner, Myke Frigerio, Jose Luera, Cory Gene, Andrea Davis, KJ Sarro, Megan Durand, Dan Garcia and Ansel Wilson) but other artists come from far and wide to volunteer (Chuck (Victory Tattoo) Mindy Mellow (Leviathan Tattoo) Josh Algood (Algood Ink), Teri Hayner (Old Sac Tattoos) Ronnie Grizard (Leonardi Tattoo) Mischa Matulich – (Classic Tattoo) Andrew Hanson (Capital Ink) Tony Gray (Royal Peacock), Vinny Valenzuela (American Tradition Tattoo), Britton Mcfetridge (Royal Peacock Tattoo), Lavaslar (Aces and Eights Tattoo) and Tonny Brache) for this amazingly successful annual event. Over the years this event has raised a whopping $200,000+ for the appreciative folks over at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. In fact, there is a Wild Bill Tattoo wing at the hospital as a result of all the dedicated artists who have donated their time and talent and proceeds to the cause and the hospital – including tips. The Tattoo-A-Thon starts at 8am and runs until midnight with 20 some volunteers working hard all day and into the night. After all the ink has all settled and the tattoo machines all lay quiet, volunteers summed up that they had tattooed over 100 customers who were willing to come in on this day and lay their money down for the kids. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 24

A few days after the event Wild Bill and Roxanne were able to present the UC Davis Children Hospital with a check for $16,000. Thanks to the efforts of Wild Bill, Roxanne and all the volunteers and customers there will be a parent of a small child out there that can rest a little easier with the knowledge that their child is getting the best medical care possible. 2nd Annual Cove Rats Crab Feed at The Inn of the Lost Coast

t’s my opinion that there are only 5 reasons for getting lost: (1) For a good Woman (or man)

(2) For good Food. (3) For a good Ride. (4) For a good Destination. (5) For good People. February 26-28 (Shelter Cove) We heard about the Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal weekend getaway/ride up north to Shelter Cove’s “Lost Coast” from owners, Stan and Terry. And I put a big red X on my new 2016 Thunder Roads NorCal calendar. They took us to best kept secret in Northern California: The Inn of the Lost Coast (www.innofthelostcoast.com) The Inn of the Lost Coast is owned by fellow veteran and bikers, Mike & Toni Caldwell. Now I don’t know if Nad is the best good woman but she puts up with my sorry ass and she’s usually on the bike ready to go before I am, that’s good enough for me. I did have to throw out about 3 pairs of shoes before we started which pissed her off some. On Friday morning, we started out in Fremont with

my buddies, Gary and Mary Hoffman and we rode like the wind until we dropped into Hopland to eat at the “Bluebird Café” which came highly recommended by the Hoffman’s and it just so happens that they also knew the waitress by name. The food here was the start of a number of meals we would enjoy and dream about later. The chicken fried steak, I had was delicious and it filled me up to the brim and Nad left half her plate uneaten from pure volume. (I could tell she was happy from all the humming coming from her side of the table.) Our meet-up spot was in Willits to gas-up to join Stan and Terry along with the other riders that converged from their ride routes in Folsom and Williams. From there we rode Hwy 101 right up to Redway where we topped off and picked up some much needed drink for our weekend stay at the Inn. A beautiful ride so far got even more beautiful. Riding among the redwoods, past the Eel River and the many creeks on a nicely paved 20 miles of road from Redway to the cove. It smelled so

good from all the trees and the closer you got to the ocean you could smell the fresh salt air. This is the kind of road I love to get lost on. Up and down hills, curves, switchbacks, wildlife, narrow bridges, all so interesting I didn’t mind the rain which was pouring at times. I was cold and wet but it felt so good to be riding in the pack – we were ready for the weekend to continue on. To greet us at check in was Lauren the Innkeeper who lives upstairs over the office. She couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. She got us all checked in so we could rest up a bit and get ready for our 2nd good meal of the ride “The Feast” put on by the Cove Rats MC. Prime Rib, Fresh Crab legs (galore!) from the Oregon Coast, salads, garlic bread and even cookies to top off the meal. This is where our drink came in as everyone shared what they brought (BYOB) to keep the evening buzzing. The owner Mike welcomed all of us to his Inn and the live music started. We ate in the art gallery/ conference room surrounded by artwork from the local artists on display. Several tables were set up for dining with windows all the way across both outside walls to let the view of the ocean and cliffs that made it feel like they were part of the Inn. Our destination…absolutely breathtaking! As we all ate, drank and laughed we got to know each other as riders can. Now we’re all new friends that hugged, exchanged phone numbers and become Facebook friends by the end of the weekend. Later that evening, folks moved outside on the deck where a large outdoor firepit was raging, waves were crashing and good conversation was flowing. Some of us found Delgada Pizza serving up delicious fresh gourmet pizzas and ice cream cones for those with a sweet tooth. A great touch for such a hungry group. On Saturday morning, for those who got up early enough, they had time to order lattes or cappuccinos from “The Fish Tank” - the onsite coffee shop owned by Jack and Autumn. Celebrating their 5th year open – they also serve bagels, quiche, pastries or sandwiches to go

along with your freshly made coffee. We slept hard and didn’t meet up until 10:30am the next morning for the start of our ride. Our memorable day ride started with a group photo by the Shelter Cove Lighthouse. Cove Rats - Bobby G and Steve were our road captains thru the Avenue of the Giants and filled us in on some of the area’s amazing history. The Avenue of the Giants was truly worth riding thru. Just another part of this incredible weekend on the Lost Coast. One of the best rides of the year! We made a pit-stop for cold beverages at the Riverwood Inn in Phillipsville and lunch later at the Chimney Tree Grill – who handled our rather large group of hungry riders with ease. After we returned back to Shelter Cove, some riders went to see Black Sands Beach (another must see beach while in the cove) and others watched from their decks as a pod of whales passed by in the distance. Meanwhile the crew from The Family of Humboldt were busily preparing salads and a delicious spaghetti feed that they generously shared with our group upon our return. As the weekend came to an end, we said our good-byes and we rode back out with Hoffman’s. Once again not to disappoint, they recommended The Wheels Café & Pub in Laytonville. I didn’t think we could get so lucky as before but breakfast was killer with homemade biscuits and gravy and my favorite chicken fried steak. All in all, this ride gets an A++ from me and Nad. I guess I’m on the hook for another sneak up here with her. She loved it and so did I – in fact, we made our reservations already for the 3rd Annual Cove Rats Crab Feed! Article contributed by Dan and Nad Rogers. Photos by Stan and Terry Hill Editors Note: We are thrilled to announce that there is already a 3rd Annual Cove Rats Crab Feed planned for February 24-26, 2017! n the earliest days of motorcycle production the biggest players in the industry remained the bicycle manufacturers. They began adapting their designs to accommodate the up and coming internal combustion engine. As engines became more powerful and designs began to outgrow their bicycle origins, the number of motorcycle producers increased. With so many people trying to succeed in the motorcycle industry, many of the 19th century inventors inevitably moved from motorcycle development to automobiles. Survival of the fittest at its finest, and at the turn of the century the first major mass production firms were established. 1894 marked the year of the first production motorcycle in Germany. Hildebrand and Wolfmüller developed the “Motorrad”. They even patented the Motorrad engine, a revolutionary 1488 cc model, but only a few hundred bikes were ever completed. At the same time the term “motorcycle” was first used in the English language when it appeared in materials promoting machines developed by E J Pennington. Sadly, Pennington’s designs never progressed past the prototype stage. In 1896 The Excelsior Motor Company began selling motorcycles to the public in Coventry, England. (Excelsior would also operate a company in the U.S. from 1905 - 1931) 1898 presented us with a U.S. development in the industry, when the Orient-Aster was built by Charles Metz at his factory in Waltham, Massachusetts. At this point in the game, many names that have become household standards began to emerge. The first familiar name in motorcycles appeared out of the bicycle era in 1898…Triumph. Triumph extended its production focus to include the motorcycle, and by 1902 had successfully produced its first model for sale. The first Triumph was essentially a bicycle fitted with a Belgian built engine that boasted a whopping 2.2 HP, and a short year later Triumph

had emerged as the largest producer of motorcycles boasting an annual production of over 500 units. Clearly not considered “mass production” by today’s standards, but in 1902?? Triumph was kicking some serious ass in the motorcycle revolution. By 1907 Triumph had perfected a new 450 cc 3.5 HP engine and was producing 1,000 units annually. 1901 was the birth year for the famed Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company. The love child of two former bicycle racers, Indian quickly became (and has remained) a beloved name in motorcycles. Their first design was the “diamond framed” Indian Single. Its engine was built by the Aurora Firm in Illinois per Indian’s specifications. The Single was made available in one color…Deep Blue. Indian also increased its production to over 500 bikes by the close of 1902, making Indian a strong competitor for Triumph. Along the way, Indian pushed the evolution of the motorcycle in several ways…in 1902 Indian produced the first chain driven bike sold to the public, as well as released the first American V-Twin in 1906 (which remains the most popular motorcycle engine today). 1907 brought the first police unit to NYC (Indian bikes were chosen by all), and by 1914 Indian had created the “loop frame” positioned gas tank, swing arm and leaf spring suspension, and the world’s first electric lights and starter. No more need for a flashlight, or parking your bike at dusk…diehards could now ride all damn night! Indian would continue to rise in the production game as well, up to 32,000 units per year (its best ever) in 1913. 1901 also brought an eager young man by the name of William S. Harley into the biking world. At the age of 21 he completed his first blueprint of a bicycle engine. In 1903, William and his partner Arthur Davidson produced their first motorcycle in their meager 10 by 15 foot factory. Henry Meyer of Milwaukee bought the original 1903 model directly

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 28

from the founders…Meyer obviously had no idea what a lucky bastard he was! In 1904 the first Harley dealership was opened in Chicago, Illinois by C. H. Lang, where one of the first production models was sold. In 1907, Harley becomes a corporation and builds a new, larger factory. In 1908, the first HD motorcycle is delivered to the Detroit Michigan PD for Detroit’s first motorcycle patrol unit. The following year, for the first time ever, spare parts for the HD V-twin were made available for sale…makes me wonder what the hell you did before that if your bike broke down?? By 1914 Harley had introduced the world to the renowned bar and shield logo, begun production of the “F-Head”, and brought us sidecars… the beginning of the tag-along rider (insert apology here). By this time, mass production was in full swing, and competition was in full force. Experimentation and innovation were taking over and being further driven by the growing sport of motorcycle racing. A powerful incentive to produce tougher, faster, more reliable machines was on the rise. While initiated for the racing world, these enhancements were to quickly infiltrate the public’s machines as well. Remember that mention of the U.S. Excelsior Motor Company? Well those cats can be thanked for being a huge driving force behind why that bad ass bike parked in your driveway does more for you than just take you from point A to point B. We will delve into our need for speed next time… Article and photos contributed Melanie Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa

RIDE PRIDE:

ROAD KING – FXR CONVERSION B

ig Jim from Loose Cannon Cycle Werks told me about his plans to convert his Road King from a bagger to an FXR styled cruiser which made me interested to see what the end results would be. Now some might ask “why would you do that?” but if you have ever met Big Jim you would understand. Let’s just say - they call him Big Jim for a reason. He said that he felt like riding a FXR or Dyna made him look and feel like he was riding a mini bike. Now you can see that the Road King conversion was a logical move for him. Riding a Road King myself for many years, I have been chomping at the bit to see the end result and share it all with you. Most of you know Loose Cannon as the shop that won Best of Show for two years in a row at the Easyriders Show - they are well known for their fabrication skills on both bikes and cars. But you should also know that Loose Cannon Cycle Werks in Sacramento - under the watchful eye of Big Jim and with Phillip Cannon spending his time on fabrication that they are more than capable of taking care of ALL of your bikes needs. They are very knowledgeable and creative and can help you realize your dream bike.

It seemed like such a great idea—tired of hanging on for dear life as my Sweetie twisted his Sporty’s throttle, I’d get my own bike. Took the MSF class, practiced, and with Sweetie biting his tongue, I bought a Nighthawk 250. Getting it home involved riding on the freeway and since I was too chicken - Sweetie got it home. Even he said it was a scary ride. Riding the 250 around town, I discovered I was a total spazz. I couldn’t get the hang of shifting and throttle control and I was so scared of crashing that riding was stressful, not fun. After a minor fender bender, I gave up riding and sold the bike. Over the next few years, Sweetie kept us on a bike and took his annual solo man-rides to Hollister. Our experiences and listening to his stories revived my desire to get my own bike again. By chance someone at work was selling a dirtbike, a Yamaha TT-R125. Riding that bike helped with my skills and confidence and the next thing I knew I bought a 150 cc scooter from a neighbor. The scooter helped me learn to ride in traffic without having to stress out about shifting. We even took it to Sturgis, which was a hoot. Then came the Honda VT600 Shadow modified to a rigid bobber. Fun as heck to ride around town, but when I rode it to Reno Street Vibrations, I almost wiped out on a huge drain during the crappy I-80 construction. We rode to Hollister and I cussed most of the way because it was dark and I was hitting every bump I wasn’t prepared for. I’d always wanted a Harley and also wanted something with suspension so I looked into a modified 883 on Craigslist. When we checked out her pedigree we realized it was the same year and from the same dealership as Sweetie’s bike—they were sister and brother! We got in some trips to Sturgis, Las Vegas, Laughlin and I would get in some local rides just to get the “knees in the breeze” but I was definitely not a mileage monster. So in love with all things motorcycle I even got an A.S. in Motorcycle Technology in my “spare time”. I’m not sure where the impetus came from, but as a 50th birthday/retirement gift to myself I decided to ride from NorCal to Memphis, TN where my brother and his family were living. Bless Sweetie (yet again) for his support--he agreed to hold down the fort and helped me get ready. Initially a coworker was going too, but he had to bug out in Phoenix. So from Phoenix on, I was on my own. It was scary and thrilling at the same time. It was nice to be able to make impulsive stops – was that a giant pistachio?!—but I

missed sharing it with Sweetie. This was also when the U.S. was getting hammered by bad weather (think Joplin) so I was dodging tornadoes, flooding, fires, and storms by myself. Being on the open road was so liberating and invigorating. The sights, smells, and food, wow! People were generally friendly, some curious, some encouraging. I stayed mostly on secondary roads so I went a little slower but I was able to see some parts of the country off the beaten path. When I got bored I’d bellow the words to the few songs I could remember or listen to online music if I had cell service. I cracked up as I rode into Winslow, AZ because “Take it Easy” came on. I had a tough decision to make when I got to the turn off for 395 because my cell phone had crapped out and I was worried about being able to summon help if something bad happened. But I figured people had made the trek way before cellphones even existed and I wanted to see Manzanar, so I sucked it up and headed north. What a breathtakingly beautiful ride. I was so glad I took the turn. More uncertainty when I met a group of geared up riders on sport tourers who said that the weather ahead was snowy and icy. I decided to go ahead and chance it. The initial incline and no-guardrail “ifyou-go-off-the-edge-you’re-gonna-die” outer curves up the mountain had me whimpering but I got through it. There was snow on the ground through the highest pass but the weather held out. I was glad to get home after 21 days on the road but also missed it! While the 883 performed well most of the trip, I decided I needed to get a bigger bike with a fairing, footboards, EFI and music for my next road trip. I test rode just about every Harley on the market at the International Women & Motorcycling conference. I now have a 2006 Electraglide Classic that I stripped down and lowered. I’m trying to get used to her and get over my fear of dropping her—again (at least I found out I can pick her up) just like I’ve had to do with every new bike. Next stop Key West!

W

e received a random phone call from a Vietnam Veteran who is down on his luck and this is his story. Due to a family emergency he had to leave his home abruptly in Alaska and head straight down to the Lake Tahoe area, to help pay respects and bury his ex-wife’s mother. Keith packed up his RV and made the journey south. The trip went smoothly and he was able to take care of everything he needed to. The trip home turned out to be a different story. The first thing that happened was when he hit Reno, the battery went dead in the motor home, so Keith went to Walmart to replace the battery. Unfortunately, the Walmart tech forgot to clamp the battery bracket down, and eventually, on a sharp turn, the battery came loose and fell into the clutch fan, which exploded and ripped the fan apart, sending shrapnel throughout the engine compartment. The pieces cut through wiring and cables, ruined the master cylinder, and in turn, he was stuck. He spent every last dime he had trying to repair the vehicle to no avail. Keith is a US NAVY Seabee veteran and started calling every local VFW Hall and American Legion Hall, trying to gather enough funds to repair the RV, find food and lodging, and a way to get back to Alaska so he could make the crab season to work for enough money to come back for his RV and possessions. He got a little here and little there, but barely enough to get him another meal and another room to lay his head each night. He finally pulled enough money together to find a cheap ticket from Seattle to Alaska via train. Now the question was, how was he going to get to Seattle from Reno? After calling numerous non-profits, churches, and veterans organizations, he almost gave up. He found himself in a Reno casino just to get out of the cold and drink free coffee. Keith became a Christian 10 years ago so he figured he would pray as he knew he was at a very low point and felt he was out of options. Then he decided he would make one more call to an American Legion Hall in Grass Valley and talked to a Legion Rider. The Legion Rider said he really couldn’t help with his situation, but he knew of a church and some people who he should call. He gave him our associate pastor, George’s number at Thunder Road Biker Church. Keith called George immediately and asked for help. He went on to tell George his veteran history of earning a bronze star, suffering from Agent Orange, and PTSD. He continued on and insisted on showing proof of who he was as to not seem like a fraud and a beggar. George could tell by the way he spoke that he was a fellow veteran and couldn’t help but feel compassion for Keith. Keith wanted to fax his DD214 and other documents to George to show in good faith that he would pay the church back at the end of crab season. George explained to Keith that we don’t have specific funds put away for things like this as we are a very small church who receives just enough to pay our monthly bills. Keith continued pleading for help and trying to show proof of his need. Then George told Keith, “I don’t need to see your proof brother, I hear your proof. You tell me you are a Christian and a veteran, and I am compelled to believe you. If you are lying, that is between you and God, and not between you and Thunder Road Biker Church. We are here to share the good news and help those in need when we can.” There was a long pause in the conversation and then George told him the Church would help, but he had to call the pastor to verify and be accountable. George called me and who would have believed that I would be sitting in Reno having dinner with some colleagues? Talk about a miracle and a divine appointment for Keith. We both agreed that this was just not by coincidence, but a calling we need to see through. I agreed with George that we need to help this veteran so George forwarded Keith’s number to me and I contacted him right away. When I called Keith, I could hear his humbleness and gratitude that we actually called him back. I told him it would be an honor to help him get

back home any way we could. So he asked the hotel for a late check out and when I got to the hotel to discuss his options; I found the door slightly ajar. I knocked and yelled for Keith, and a voice welcomed me in into a neatly kept room, with the bed tightly made, and there was Keith at the little table with his Marine Corp Bible opened and being read. I sat down on the other side of the table and listened to Keith tell his story. Sometimes, to really help someone, we just need to sit with them and listen. Often we are just too busy so we forget the needs of others. He showed me his military documentation, his DD214, the PTSD doctor’s report along with several other items. We were both US Navy Seabees and we both had the same rating. We were both Construction Mechanics and stationed at the same home port at different times in Port Hueneme CA. Yes, this whole thing was meant to be. I told Keith we were going to help get him get home with no strings attached and handed him an envelope with more than enough to help him with food along the way. He told me of his prayers and that he was almost out of hope, but still believed that somehow his faith would see him through and before 24 hours passed the miracle happened. He mentioned the only train ride to Seattle left that morning so he would have to wait until the next morning, but after purchasing the train ticket to Seattle, he would have nothing left for a room tonight. Thunder Road Church was blessed just enough to be able step up and get Keith one more night at the hotel so the next morning he would be on his way home. I dropped Keith off in front of the Walmart in Reno and before we got out of the car he asked me to pray for him and his journey. I did as he asked and then we hugged to say our good-byes. He said he felt he had to share one last thing with me as it has been a burden on him since 1975 when he first came home from the war. He told me about getting off the bus and no more than a few feet after he got off the bus, a woman walked right up to him, spit in his face and called him a baby killer. I won’t go into details, but because of some of the devastating events that took place in Vietnam, he believed her and has suffered with PTSD from those events and the words from that woman. I held on to Keith and reassured him he was a good man and filled with God. He told me those scars still linger inside when he wakes at night, but God has removed the faces and just put blank spaces in their places, and I said, “Amen!“ As I watched Keith walk away, I knew he was going to be okay and that God was on his side. I felt a tremendous feeling of love for Keith as a veteran and as a Christian, and he really was just a genuine guy needing help. I want to say, “Thank you!” to those people who have come to Thunder Road Biker Church on occasion and also to the regulars who call Thunder Road their home. I also want to thank the VFW, the American Legion, and the Legion Riders for helping Keith with what you could, and especially the Legion Rider for sending Keith to us in his hour of need. We don’t know your name, but we do know your heart. And lastly, I want to especially thank Stan and Terry Hill from Thunder Roads Magazine for giving me the opportunity to write in this magazine with encouraging messages that have helped so many people and organizations who find this magazine. It is truly an honor to serve others through Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. P.S. Keith’s promise is that he is going to return with so much salmon from working the fishing boats that we are all going to have a feast together in September… stay tuned and please keep Keith and all Veterans in your daily prayers – See you at Thunder Road! MY TWO CENTS: Mirror, mirror on the bike It’s one hell of a concept to put two mirrors on a motorcycle, and a great idea to keep ‘em on the bike. The only thing that would make it better is if the rider used them. Let me tell you what happened. One morning, I was on my way to NASBIKE Performance - that’s where my shop is. It was a nice warm morning and I wanted to take advantage of the morning sun shining on me between storms. I’m cruising along at about 75 when the traffic started to slow down and come to a crawl, so I use my God given California right to split lanes, naturally at a safe speed…. I’m really enjoying my ride to work on this beautiful morning. I’m looking forward to getting to work and straightening out the frame on my rack, because I love what I do. I’m enjoying the sunshine and all the different smells after a long rain, and everything just looks better in the sunshine. I can smell the grass in the fields and different trees. I smell different varieties of pot from about every fourth or fifth car stuck in traffic and all kinds of different car deodorizers. I love riding to work in the morning! Everything is good and uneventful as it should be while you’re splitting lanes, until the guy on a blue sport bike dressed like he’s on a race track pulls out in front of me and decides to split lanes at 5mph, the same speed as the flow of traffic. Next thing I know I’m skidding on the white dots in between cars and I grabbed my clutch and rapped the throttle because my horn didn’t work. The boob on the sport bike didn’t even look back or raise a hand to acknowledge what he did. He just pulled over and let me pass. He didn’t even look at his mirrors before he

jumped out at that slow speed, and all I could do was give him the stink eye and shake my head as I throttled on to get away from him. He never even looked at me, he just looked away. So much for uneventful, and why is my blinker on? I’ll tell you why! I’ve been on this same bike almost daily for many years now and to this day I can’t hit my horn button in an emergency. Do you know how many people have looked at me and probably wondered “why is that biker with his blinker on flipping me off?” Because I can’t find my damn horn button! Looking back at the close call with the blue sport bike I’m lucky I didn’t rear end his bike and I guess I’m lucky I hit the blinker instead of the kill switch, that would have sucked! Go ahead and laugh! But, real quick, without looking at your bike, what buttons are on your clutch lever side? Quiz one of your friends and count out loud waiting for the answer and see how long it takes for them to get it right. Better yet, if you have a touring model, tell me what gauges and what position they are on the dash of your bike. Quick! That’s what I thought. Anyway, I hope your ride is fun and has no close calls. It’s bad enough we have to look out for texting drivers, cars that don’t see us and cars that don’t care about us. But the inexperienced or foolish rider can take you out just as easy. That’s my two cents. Check your mirrors, have fun and ride like hell Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

THE ORIGINAL ATTORNEYS WHO RIDE SINCE 1975

RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS WE RIDE

WE CARE

We were riders long before we became attorneys. We understand what you’re going through and are recognized experts in the eld of motorcycle law. At Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, our experience on two wheels is a passion that works to your beneet.

Russ was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the rst attorney ever to receive this honor. His commitment to the motorcycle community resulted in “BAM” (Breakdown Assistance for Motorcyclists), a FREE nationwide volunteer program of over 2,000,000 riders helping riders everywhere in the U.S. We go the extra mile for our clients and our friends. Our business model is built on relationships and trust.

WE WIN Our track record and reputation have earned us the respect of our adversaries and the entire legal community. We are relentless with insurance companies and we work tirelessly to get the maximum possible recovery for our clients. Don’t settle for less than you deserve. Call 1-800-4-BIKERS for a free consultation with the experts rst.

I recommend Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys highly as they were fast and effcient when I needed them most. They fully appreciate riders’ needs as they ride and understood my situation fully. I have no regrets and am very happy with the outcome. When the unthinkable happens, it’s good to have them on your side. I wouldn’t consider anyone else, neither should you.

-Thank you, Rick Rademacher
