editor’s letter IG NEWS!! Our publication B has been honored with an award from the Thunder

Roads Magazine founders as 2015 Publishers of the Year! WoW!! Can we get a hellyeah?!?! Terry and I feel quite honored and humbled to be recognized for our hard work and openhandedly share it with the many contributors of Thunder Roads NORCAL. Thankfully there is no shortage of interesting people to meet and places to see here and truth be told it is our motorcycle community in Northern California that offers our endless source of material. Our mission has been to showcase the positive activities happening, mixed in some great adventures and add some of the baddest bike builders on the west coast. And we are all truly fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the country where we can usually ride year round. As a community, we all have a part in the success of TRM NorCal so we want to say THANK YOU ALL to those who have motivated us, told their friends about us and supported us in so many different ways. We also share this success with all of our business partners we treasure your support and truly recognize that without you none of this is possible. As we prepare to go to print, I am looking out of the window and listening to the weather report. It appears as though we are currently in the tight grip of that El Niño thing, because the rain looks like it will never stop. But although we get a couple of damp weeks here and there, we are still very lucky to live in a place that when the rain stops - it’s back to being great riding weather again. And it never really gets THAT cold in Northern California – that is with the exception for some of our snowbound friends in or near the sierras. Places like Truckee or Reno might not be able to ride their two wheels because of the snow, but for the rest of us lowlanders…let’s get some – let’s ride! Alright all you guys and gals, its February and that means it’s time to pay a little MORE special attention to the sweetheart in your life. So why not join C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin for their annual Sweetheart Run. It’s always a beautiful ride and has become an annual tradition for me and my sweetheart Terry. And remember, “It doesn’t matter where you go in life, it’s who you have beside you” Speaking of beautiful rides or drive…don’t forget to make your reservations for a Lost Coast weekend getaway (CHECK OUT THE EVENTS CALENDAR) in Humboldt County’s beautiful - Shelter Cove where you are invited to JOIN US – or you can read about it in April’s issue. his 2004 Harley Davidson Electra Glide has taken the long road to get where it is today like a lot of other customization jobs it comes slow one step at a time and seems to be ever evolving. Take a close look at this one because rumor has it that soon this bike will be sporting a whole new look. My sources are telling me that you will be able to see the next incarnation at the Autorama show coming up this month at Cal Expo. With any luck maybe we can get the new look in the pages here so we can all see the before and after look. One thing is for sure customizing motorcycles is a never ending process. So here is what we know about this one. Article by Stan Hill. Photos contributed by www.masburg. com / Model: Jay Kay / MUA: Jennifer Neider

Tech Tips Carburetors - Part 1

L

egend has it the first Harley-Davidson carburetor was made from a tomato can. None of my friends from that era are around anymore so my sources for a real fact check are limited, but if I had to take a SWAG, I would probably guess that the “prototype” may have involved a can, but the final product was most certainly a bit more sophisticated (not by much though). Fun fact: William Harley and Arthur Davidson had some help with their initial motorized bicycle design and first carburetor from Ole Evinrude, the outboard motor guy! The fuel mixers have changed substantially since the days of the Silent Gray Fellow. Keihin’s Constant Velocity (CV) carb was introduced with the 1988 models and remained until the 2007 model year, when all Harley-Davidson motorcycles were equipped with Electronic Fuel Injection. While fuel injection is now the rule, there are still plenty of carburetors out there. This next series will cover some carb basics as well as specific tuning procedures for a few of the most common carburetors.

fuel delivery systems. Aspiration has nothing to do with the system (carbureted or fuel injected). It refers to the induction. Forced (turbo or super charged) or natural.

There are three basic circuits in most carburetors. They are defined in function by their effect on the RPM range. Different manufacturers can use different terminology to identify these circuits. The first is the idle or pilot circuit. This controls fuel delivery at idle and just off idle. The primary adjustment for tuning the idle circuit is the air/fuel mixture screw. Depending on design, opening the mixture screw will either add fuel or air during adjustment. We’ll clear this up when we discuss tuning procedures. In most cases, at least one jet is used in conjunction with the a/f screw to regulate the idle circuit. Next is the intermediate or mid-range circuit. This circuit runs the show just off idle to approximately 3000 RPM. As before, this range can vary depending on the carb. Just to make it clear as mud, some manufacturers use throttle position for tuning reference, some use RPM, and occasionally actual speed over ground is thrown in there. The intermediate circuit can utilize jets and or needles for fuel metering. The third circuit is the main circuit. This controls delivery where the intermediate leaves off all the way to WFO. In most cases, the main is controlled by a jet. Most modern carburetors also utilize an accelerator pump. This device provides a shot of fuel when the throttle is opened. The initial demand for fuel is usually greater when the throttle is opened fast. The idle circuit alone cannot provide enough fuel under this condition, and the engine will stumble and cough through the intake due to a lean condition. Next month, we’ll talk about the venerable S&S carburetors.

Carburetors operate on Bernoulli’s Principle. In a nutshell, as air passes through a Venturi, it increases in speed with a corresponding reduction in pressure. This lower pressure will draw in fuel from the float bowl into the various circuits. You will hear the term naturally aspirated in performance circles and this is often confused with a distinction between Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

stopped here a few times and have never been disappointed. BBQ’D oysters, fish and chips, and when in season an incredible crab and corn chowder. So, after another fine lunch, we got back on Highway 1 and putted up to Goat Rock State Beach in Jenner. It was still overcast, but at least it had stopped raining. The sights along this stretch were well worth the wet trip up here. And the stormy weather gave everything a kind of dark and moody feel. Aw, storms on the coast! Before the big right turn to the town of Jenner go left on Goat Rock Road and it will take you down to the beach and also out to where the Russian River flows into the Pacific. Some real nice areas to walk around and soak up the amazing coastline. You’ll also find the Mammoth Rocks here. Jagged formations that look like they have been rubbed smooth near the bottom. Archeologists think the Wooly Mammoth used these outcroppings as rubbing rocks. Hey, you never know. With the skies darkening and a chill wind coming up, we made our way back to the hotel and checked in. The hotel

ell, if we thought last month’s weather was less than desirable, this month was even worse. Been a long time coming, I guess. So one weekend the weather guy predicted a short window of opportunity and we decided to make a run for it. Still couldn’t really go north or east, it had to be south or west. We chose west. We’ve been by it a dozen times, but have never stopped to try the oysters at Rocker Oysterfellers in Valley Ford. And since the Valley Ford Hotel is part of the same building, we decided to make our way there for an overnighter. It wasn’t a great day when we headed out, but it would have to do. Sure enough, from Vacaville to Valley Ford, it pretty much rained all the way. Not heavy, but enough to throw out the caution flags. Took the nice route up SR12 and through Petaluma. It was late morning when we reached Valley Ford and too early to check in, so we rolled on up Highway 1 to Bodega Bay for lunch. If you like seafood deli’s, the Fishetarian Fish Market is your place (www.fishetarianfishmarket.com). We have

has that old-time western feel to it. The staff was very friendly and our upstairs room was clean and comfortable. Man, this sounds like a trip advisor review! Heads up though – no television. But, if you do need to keep up with the outside world, they have wi-fi. This Memorial Day weekend they will be hosting the annual Oysterpalooza. Big party with lots of tasty bivalves, rockin’ bands and just folks having fun, fun, fun. Since they had a Sunday Brunch at Rockers, we decided to walk down the street to Dinucci’s for dinner. We’re always up for Italian food. A nice older place built in 1908 when Valley Ford was a train depot. Make sure to bring an appetite. They keep the courses coming family style. Not only good food, but it has a classic kind of dive bar for an adult beverage or two. (www.dinuccisrestaurant.com) The storm blew through in the night and the next morning was beautiful. So nice we couldn’t resist taking a ride before breakfast. So we jumped on the Franklin-Dillon Beach Road and headed out to the coast again. Even though it’s just seven miles, you’ll get a hundred miles of enjoyment. Eucalyptus and Cypress trees, sprawling ranches, green valleys and continued...

Fishetarian in Bodega Bay more great coastline. Now that’s a way to start your day! Back from Dillon Beach, we went downstairs for the brunch. Since Rocker Oysterfellers (www.rockeroysterfellers. com) was the focus of our trip, we were a little anxious. No need to be. Everything was fantastic. Not kidding. Fine dining in a small little town out near the coast. If not the best oysters we’ve ever had, then it’s a tie. Actually everything was excellent. Stop by. You won’t be sorry. We think this is a great place for a day trip/overnighter. The hotel is half of what you would pay to stay in Bodega Bay. It’s also kind of a

KNYTE RIDERZ RC

3RD ANNUAL MEGA December 19 (Union City): Signing up with Secretary Pinky, for the Knyte Riderz Mega Toy Run in the Union Landing parking lot next to Starbucks on one side and IHOP on the other, a sign up table manned by nice smiles, free coffee and Krispy Kreme’s, was not hard to do. We just dropped off our new toys, signed our names and collected some free trinkets including a ride pin handed out by 3 darling kids, Robert (10yrs), Maleena (8yrs) and Sareena (4yrs) with mama Sandra cheering them on. We felt good. It was the start of the run that was going to take us up to Oakland in a parade of bikes to the Oakland Children’s Hospital, to help deliver the many presents collected for children ranging from toddlers to teens. Santa was there too. Those kids lit up when he arrived on his bike. Ray Hazel has been Santa for as long as he can remember,

RUN

with the attitude of giving and true kindness he treated each of us with realness you would expect from the “real” Santa. MC’s from all over were in attendance including several from the United Motorcycle Clubs of Alameda County (UMCOAC) like The Regime, Biker Dogs, Xtreme Vixens, Sick Minds, Marines, Diddo Crew, Fremont Travelers, CMA, Buffalo Soldiers, Mestizos, Kanakahekili, Second Society, Rollin Loco, She Devils, Legion of Sin, The Bay, Crazy Apes, Brethryn, Vikings, Knyte Riderz, Pacific Savagez and the list goes on… Once arriving at The Children’s Hospital the Toys For Tots gifts arriving as well by truck and trailer, and started the organizing onto many tables set up by age categories from toddlers to teens so they would be ready for the long line of children awaiting their turn to pick out two awesome gifts each that they could take home. The bikers lined up beside

the back of the trailer in two lines that ran down around 30 men and women on each side all the way to the tables and did the hand to hand pass through talking, laughing and smiling all ready to help. Everyone was having fun! The kids looking on saw a real show from the big, leathered and sometimes hairy faced bikers and the beautiful biker ladies as well. Not done yet! After gifts were handed out the children then lined up to have their pictures taken with Santa and their gifts by photographer Dan Rogers. Knyte Riderz Riding Club President, Champagne Ellison shared with TRM NorCal that this fundraiser event is for the George Mark Children’s House (www.georgemark.org) in San Leandro. The George Mark Children’s House is a non-profit organization that provides pediatric palliative care (hospice care for children and their families with life ending illnesses), Knyte Riderz RC have vowed to spend the rest of their history making sure these kids have everything they need and desire

– knowing that sadly some will not be here next year for the 4th Annual Mega Toy Run. Knyte Riderz RC and friends have raised more than $3000 for both childcare facilities. Dr. Dana Long (17 years at the hospital) and Christine Schudel and Education Specialist (10 years) were there to oversee and of course Monique Williams (Admin Asst for Primary Care 17 years) handled all the questions and logistics. The day was wonderful and it felt really great to be a part of this share of toys for a much needed cause.

2016 EASYRIDERS Bike Show Tour

January 9-10 (Sacramento): As an exhibitor, this show typically starts on Friday morning with “checkins” and setting up vendor booths. But the fun really starts Saturday morning at 10am when the doors open and the Sacramento Easyriders Show officially begins.

We consider this as one of the best shows of the year because it is a great time for us to visit with you as well as a lot of the shops and other vendors that we work with. After getting through the holiday season, this event signifies to us that it is the time to get the new riding season underway. The activity level will start to ramp up in NorCal from now on and until next November until another holiday season begins. Plus, it is also a great opportunity to see some of the most impressive bikes out there. We look forward to checking out some of the new projects that have been hidden away in a garage or in the back corner of a motorcycle shop only getting worked on after all of the customers have been taken care of. One thing that I hear often from the builders is “we were working on this bike until 3am” to make sure it was finished in time for the Easyriders Show. And alRandy of River City Motorcycles

though there are bikes that might not be “your style of bike”, one thing is for sure, we can all appreciate the hard work and imagination from of all of them. I still say that we can put our NorCal builders up against any in the nation, Nor Cal has long been the trendsetter for new and creative ideas and the rest just follow. Returning to the stage again this year was The Fryed Brothers Band so we were able to hear all our favorite tunes as we were hanging out at the booth. Also the Purrfect Angelz made their presence known as they carved up the stage with their curves keeping the crowed amused. A multi-talented Madera native, Rusty Coones known to many as “Quinn” on Sons of Anarchy is also a bike builder of Illusion Cycles and plays guitar for Attika7 made an appearance on Saturday to meet and greet with fans. Rusty came by and hung out in the Thunder Roads both for a while taking pictures with the Thunder Roads Calendar Girls and his fans. Rusty is a big man, did not realize just how big until I met him in person, our models were barely half his height, but he seemed to be a genuine down-to-earth

good dude. Last summer, TRM NorCal published an article about him, but this was the first time we actually got to meet Rusty in person. Back again this year were bike builders from Arizona John Shope of Dirty Bird Concepts and Paul Yaffee’s Bagger Nation who brought in some amazing bikes of their own to display for the fans. They were also there to guest judge their own categories and award custom made trophies that they each provided. Speaking of trophies, Bill Holland of Executive Choppers in Roseville built the Best of Show trophies that will be presented at each Easyriders Show as it makes its way across the country. Another highlight was finally getting to hear the dual engine twincam motor that was fitted to a beautiful custom bike from Arlen Ness start up. It is a beast of a motorcycle and a testament to the engineering capabilities of the crew at Arlen Ness. As the dust settled on Sunday evening we were energized for 2016 and are looking forward to as many new adventures that we can fit into our schedule. Article and photos by Stan and Terry Hill. WELCOME TO SUNOL!

Y

ou ever have one of those mornings when you get up and there’s no coffee and there ain’t shit to eat for breakfast? Well, it’s happening to me right now. I walked back to the bedroom and yelled at the ole lady, get your butt up we’re riding to Sunol for breakfast at “The Railroad Café”. I’ve never seen the ole girl move so fast! I thought maybe I brought home the wrong lady from the Florence last night. Mind you, I’m still half asleep, no coffee, and starving to death - all I can picture is my wife walking around Niles madder than a wet hen looking for me. Went out to the garage fired up the King then Sparkle come running out calling me an a-hole for leaving without her. I wasn’t going to leave her - she’s buying breakfast! It was an awesome ride thru Niles Canyon in the morning, cool crisp air and the King just purring around the windy turns. When we get there we ran into some friends we haven’t seen in a year. They were “The Yellow Jackets MC”. You never know who you’re going to run into at the café. We like to think it’s our secret breakfast spot but it’s everybody’s secret

café. Food is very good, they keep your coffee full and the people that work there are like family. After breakfast we went to Sunol Food and Liquor. The owner for 12 years, Harvin Singh, has a memory like an elephant and a wonderful smile. He knew exactly what I’m going to buy and the path I will take in the store. I haven’t been there in awhile. There’s a table outside the store where everyone hangs out. Today we met Sunol resident Pat and his Dog Sierra. He hooked us up with everybody. If you’re ever in trouble with the ole lady, take her to Bosco’s Bones and Brews for dinner. Very classy dinner area with an awesome menu. That’s where we met the CMA Christian Motorcyclists, Chaplain Larry, VP Ken, Tom & Juliette, R. Capt Jerry, Sue and Pres Bill. They rode all the way from Fairfield just to highlight their day eating at Bosco’s. Then there is the Bar. They entertain with bands and karaoke. Willie Nelson has been there too! They have pictures of him riding with the Hells Angels and his guitar is on the wall. The bar and dinner house was named after Bosco the dog who was voted in as mayor of Sunol in

1981 and ruled until his death in 1994. There was rumor that there was almost an international incident with China because Bosco was elected mayor stating that was an example of the failings of America’s electoral process. Apparently, in China you can’t even vote for a dog catcher.

Mayor of Sunol Bosco

Sunol is a township and has to have a mayor. Ironically Bosco won out over 2 other humans in the election. You can visit Bosco today, as he is stuffed and mounted behind the bar with a beer dispenser in him. You lift his hind leg and…wahlah - you get the picture! Sunol Food and Liqour

Back outside a one of a kind Honda caught my eye. Rider Eli Pitta explained the 1980 Gold Wing was turned into the awesome creation by his son Matt who paints motorcycles as a small business he named “Color Werk’s” which was painted on the bike. His ice hockey #22 was also painted on. It was fun just listening to Eli telling us about how his son came up with his awesome bike. Sunol is the perfect place to stop at when riding home from a run to kick back and unwind. Also a good meeting place before a ride and breakfast at the Sunol Railroad Cafe.

I

often find myself asking the question “what if…?” What if forks weren’t called forks? What if no one had invented drinking straws? Who sat down and actually decided that toilet paper was a necessity, not just a luxury? And what did their friends and family think and say when these inventors announced their fabulous plans to change the world one convenience item at a time? I’m sure that Martin Cooper’s wife probably thought to herself “What in the hell is he thinking??” when he shared his idea in 1973 to revolutionize the world with the modern day cell phone…but we all know how that turned out for him. So this thought process has lead me to the following question… Who in the hell sat down and looked at their bicycle, and with what I assume was complete and utter disappointment in its slow moving, two wheeled existence and said…”I can make that bitch fly!” Well that person just happened to be a Massachusetts born son of a carpenter, named Sylvester Howard Roper. Roper made his living as a machinist in Boston, but began inventing at an early age. By the age of twelve he had constructed a small stationary engine, and at only fourteen a locomotive engine. Roper continued to invent throughout his life, including guns, sewing machines, and finally steam powered carriages and bicycles. You may be saying to yourself, a steam powered bicycle is not a motorcycle, but I believe it is clearly a predecessor to our modern day two wheeled objects of affection. Riding on two wheels began with a primitive push bike on which the rider sat, but there were no pedals. The rider propelled himself forward by pushing his/her feet on the ground (a Flintstone’s bike if you will). Next came the high wheelers with a huge front wheel and a small rear wheel, and nearly impossible to ride. Finally came the “safety bicycle”. Quite the invention in and of itself considering it had wheels of equal size, as well as a set of pedals to drive the rear wheel through a chain linkage. The evolution of two wheel travel continued and it became a common means of personal transportation. Later it would come to be seen as a “racing” vehicle, so of course it wouldn’t be long until someone looked at the bicycle and knew that it had a higher purpose. An evolutionary need to be better, and by better of course I mean faster. I like to imagine that Roper arrived home after a long day to his little inventors shop out back, tired after a long day, and an even longer ride home on his bicycle. He sits down with a cold one and stares at his two wheeler…”stupid bike anyway. No worldly reason it should take me so long to get home each night. Keeps me from working on the things I love.” Then it hits him…the light bulb moment…”I’m gonna make this SOB fly!” Fast forward through hours and hours of painstaking disappointment and doubt to the design that actually works, and Ta-Daa! The first motorcycle is born. The year is 1869, and the world was about to change. History states that when Roper began riding his two wheeled contraption it was not well received. It apparently spooked horses, and was loud, as well as emitting a noxious odor when he rode through town. Rumor has it, he was actually arrested

once for riding it, but had to be released when it was determined they could not find any laws he was actually breaking….and; the modern day biker was born. Interestingly, this first model anticipated many modern motorcycle features. Roper used one steam cylinder of 2 ¼” bore by 2 ½” stroke to either side of the frame behind the seat and connected piston rods to cranks on the rear wheel axle. A firebox and boiler were suspended on springs attached to the hickory wood frame between the wheels. Piston valves for the cylinders were operated by eccentrics adjacent to their cranks, and the water pump was operated by the left-cylinder crank. Exhaust steam was carried via tubing into a short chimney projecting up from behind the saddle. A coal fire heated the water stored in a reservoir that was constructed as a part of the seat and generated steam to run the engine. While this model utilized a twisting hand grip to serve as throttle control, and also had a cable that was attached to the handlebars to allow for breaking, it was still quite primitive in design. The operating temperature was nearly 300 degrees Fahrenheit between the rider’s legs, and the travel distance was extremely limited. A second model Roper designed later boasted a one gallon water reservoir and allowed for rides up to eight miles in length. June 1st, 1896 Roper would showcase this model at the Charles River bicycle racetrack in Boston. The idea was to test the motorcycles viability as a pace-making machine for bike races. Initially Roper covered a mile in 2 minutes and 12 seconds… that’s roughly 30 miles per hour. Elated by his results, 70 year old Roper apparently got that old feeling again, and decided he could definitely go faster. Flying around the 1/3 mile wooden track he lost control on the back stretch and was thrown from his bike into the surrounding sand. Sylvester Howard Roper was pronounced dead at the scene, but later it was determined it was not a result of the accident itself, but rather heart failure. I don’t know about you, but seems to me he must have died a happy man. Both of Roper’s steam powered motorbikes were purchased by museums…the original steam powered bike still residing at the Smithsonian. While Roper’s motorcycles never found commercial success, they surely provided a source of inspiration and direction for inventors in the gas-powered motorbike era. Speaking of the gas-powered era….I wonder what possessed Daimler to put that first gas engine on his old wooden bike. …to be continued next month Article and photos contributed by Melanie Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa

I

Wendy Segarra-Willis

have always had a passion for motorcycles since childhood, while growing up we would ride dirt bikes and had a lot of fun, yet, each time I saw a roaring of a Harley Davidson I would say to myself “I am going to own one of those someday.” All throughout my life motorcycles were a big part of my life. When I was 15 I left home and began traveling, thinking about my life and where I wanted to go next, hitchhiking and jumping freight trains, seeing the states. I met and married my husband at 18, and moved to San Jose. I was always the passenger on the bike. I wanted to ride my own yet the opportunity did not present itself at that time, starting a family at 22 with having my first born, there would be no time, after the husband passing away while our daughter was very young, I thought my dream of owning my own bike was far out of reach, 2 more daughters and a failed marriage, I left California to start a new life in the Midwest with my daughters, motorcycles were still a big part of our life in the Midwest. I began college, to obtain a Nursing Degree, specializing in Wound Care -which is where my other passion has been. After graduating college with my major in Nursing, I had been away from California quite some years and the journey began the destination back to California. Rekindled my friendships and working long hours and riding with my friends when I was not working. One day I was waiting on my oldest daughter to get home and stopped at the Auburn Harley Shop, to kill some time. And left a few hours later with my brand new Nightster. The style and look to the bike along with the back fender was what attracted me to this particular bike. I got the bike home and told my friend Michael what I had done and he was right over and he said get on the bike and he got on the fender with no back

pegs and we hit the road, leaving his bike at my house, he wanted to make sure I felt secure enough alone and taught me a lot in those few times he was on the bike. He trusted me enough to trust me with his life and visa versa. Then I was off and riding on my own after those few times, and we rode together a lot, and being the free spirit that I am I began telling the daughters I will be back in a few days and leave on that bike and be in another state, just take off alone with the open road in front of me. In 2012 I had to take the bike in for some repairs when my youngest daughter took me to pick up my bike, she pointed out a nice Heritage Classic and suggested I purchase a bike that had more comfort ability, and before I left that day I had sealed the deal on that Heritage. The service department set the bike up for me, which even included a kickstand extension due to my 5 feet could not reach the kickstand. The service department put low seat and really set the bike up for my size. An excellent job well done. I was off and riding her as much as possible. The freedom I feel riding my bikes are the best, there is nothing to think about except the open road and of course dodging the cars that sometime don’t see me. Pure heaven. Between working as a fulltime Wound Care Nurse, being a mother, a grandmother I still fit in time to ride. My 1 yr old granddaughter has already taken a fascination for motorcycles and rides a mini quad, already practicing stunts on her quad. Soon she will be riding with me. My future goal is to ride cross-country, to experience every breath taking view.

THE RAZ REPORT: 35TH ANNUAL

NEW YEAR’S DAY RUN/ TOM PERKINS MEMORIAL January 1 (South San Francisco): The 35th Annual New Year’s Day Run at Dudley Perkins Company Harley-Davidson was a somber occasion due to the recent passing of Tom Perkins (12/17/56 -12/15/15) and yet, it was the most attended of any of the preceding New Years Day Runs as over 400 riders poured in from near and far. The day was sunny and brisk with a clear blue sky when we arrived at the dealership around 9’ish. There were already as many riders at the dealership as is typical for the Annual New Year’s Day Run having parked in the dealership parking lot and around the cul-de-sac, but, the riders continued to roll in and eventually overflowed the dealership parking lot into the back parking area by the service department, the parking lots of the neighboring businesses were full of bikes, and the whole cul-de-sac is packed handlebar to handlebar and down Corey Way towards Utah Ave. Plenty of coffee and donuts (i.e., did NOT run out!) Thank you very much! The usual ride’s breakfast stop and ride down the coast for a New Year’s toast at Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero was cancelled in order for riders to be able to return to the dealership in time for the memorial ceremony. At the rider’s meeting, with Christopher Perkins at the helm, an abbreviated route over to the coast and back was described. After lining up, a Golden Gate HOG Chapter Road Captain blocked the intersection and they were off with Christopher Perkins in the lead riding his dad’s olive/orange shovelhead. A good five minutes of riders rolled by the patiently waiting cages and then and several more minutes of stragglers continued to trickle onto South Airport Boulevard. Many more riders arrived at the dealership while the ride

was in progress and when the riders on the ride returned, it was standing room only in the huge tent prepared for an anticipated 400 people. Dinner was provided: your choice of salad with Italian or ranch dressing, a roll with butter, cowboy beans, corn, bar-b-queued chicken drumstick and thigh! After dinner several of TP’s family and friends came onstage for readings and life stories - all VERY interesting and moving. Pages from TP’s personal office notepads were on the tables for folks to write something on which would be collected and bound together. I wrote that it has been my good fortune and pleasure to work with TP over the last 6 years during which time I prepared monthly advertisements for Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal according to his detailed description. My wife wrote of how on a New Years Day Run several years ago, she, previously unknown to TP - just another rider, approached him at Nick’s Restaurant to ask if someone at the shop could check for her goggles which she believed she left on the parts counter. He asked for her address which she wrote on a napkin and we had no idea whether he would remember or even find them at the shop, but two days later they arrived overnighted at our home in West Sacramento! Quite a surprise, but what a testament to what

a first class operation TP ran. In conclusion, Christopher assurred everyone that he and the Perkins family are going to continue to run DPCHD in the tradition that TP entrusted to them. We wish them all continued success in the coming years. As for me, I am looking forward to the 36th Annual New Year’s Day Run in 2017, and, to quote TP...”IT’S THE BEST RIDE OF THE YEAR!” Article and photographs contributed by Russell “Raz” Holder / KNUCKLEHEADS FOREVER! The Raz Report: MMA Swap Meet December 6 (Dixon): Gus Alvarez, Vice President/Chief of Operations of the Modified Motorcycle Association (www. mma-ca.org) has done it again - another successful annual rain-or-shine swap meet held at the Dixon May Fairgrounds. Recall this is the swap meet that the MMA used to hold annually at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Vendor setup was “officially” from 8am to 10am, although there just may have been a few early birds scoping out what other vendors had brought before 8am. Some vendors set up outside, some vendors set up inside, and although there was a 5 to 10 percent chance of rain, there was no appreciable wetness, merely gray skies; around 11’ish it was 50’ish degrees and a little overcast, all in all - a good day. The gates were open to the public from 10am to 5pm. There was a little bit of everything here, old parts, new parts, tools, etc., etc., etc. Didn’t find what you were looking for??? Maybe you didn’t get here early enough... come earlier next year. Mark your calendar now - next year’s MMA Dixon May Fairgrounds Swap Meet will be Sunday, December 4th, 2016... Rain or shine! T

his month’s article is dedicated to my brother Edward Anthony Lujan (7/28/1959 – 12/7/2015). I dedicate this to my brother, not just because he is my brother, but because he is like many other brothers out there who passed away way before their time. My brother was a father, a son, a grandson, and a brother. Not only was he all of those, but he was also a friend. A friend to so many throughout his life that when it was time for the memorial service, they all came to share some words of love and encouragement. Isn’t that what we all strive for at the end of our time here on this great big rock we call earth? We want people to stop and say what a great guy he was or that he would always give you the shirt off his own back or if he had only one dollar left, he would give it away if it meant it would help you more. That is exactly what happened that very day we celebrated my brother’s life on January 9th. Isn’t it strange how a death rekindles the life in a family? How a memorial service brings friends together once again? How all the strife and meaningless things we quarrel about mean absolutely nothing in our greatest time of sorrow? Memorial services really put life into perspective and what is really important in our own lives. Pretty soon, the love we have for each other far outweighs any old grudges we barely can remember. It puts to bed who was right and who was wrong, who got this and who got that, and all the physical things left behind. At the end of the day, it’s all about love. I loved my brother so much as we were so much alike in so many ways. As I was reading his eulogy I was flooded with old memories of laughing, playing, fighting, drinking, partying, and everything brothers do throughout our lives together. At the end, I was at peace knowing he knew Jesus and I will be seeing him again in the Father’s house as there are many rooms waiting for us to be reunited with our loved ones. My brother was a U.S. NAVY veteran. He served honorably and was medically discharged after a few years of serving. As the world took its toll on his journey, he ended up homeless for more than 4 years on the streets of Sacramento and Richmond. Praise the Lord that we were able to help him into a VA program and he stayed sober for just over 3 years before he passed away. He had his own apartment and was finally happy, safe, and warm. He passed away sober and reconciled with his entire family. For some of us that have suffered that satanic disease of addiction, our ultimate goal at the end of our journey is to lay to rest clean and sober. He did and for that I am forever grateful; to God, his sponsor Koe, AA, and to the people who call Thunder Road Church their home. You all made a difference in Ed’s life and he talked about the church quite often. If you are reading this, and you are still out there suffering, I want to personally offer the open doors of Thunder Road Biker Church to you, where there is no judgment, there is no bias, and there is no ridicule, just the love and comfort

from a bunch of folks just like you. I want to personally thank Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel in Rocklin for the use of their facility, the U.S. NAVY Honor Guard for playing taps and doing an incredible flag presentation, the Patriot Guard for standing in cold weather in honor of a fellow veteran, but most of all I would like to thank all our special biker friends that showed up to support our family. It made all the difference, and I will be forever grateful from the bottom of my heart. John 14:2 - “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you”. (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: Dyna Front Engine Bracket and Top Stabilizer Link BEFORE

Dyna’s 04 and older. A link for 05-up is in development and will be available soon. While this top link doesn’t help with handling, it does reduce vibration - especially at freeway speeds. The instructions were once again, clear and easy to follow. Although I removed my tank for the photos, you can install this by just lifting the tank and sliding a block of wood underneath. My top motor mount required drilling a new hole, but this is easy with a drill press or just a drill. Once installed you need to check your vertical alignment by using an inclinometer or a level on the front rotor. Stand the front up straight and adjust the link to where the rear rotor matches the front. That’s it, just tighten everything up and go. I felt a big difference in vibration at speed, and that really helps on long trips. All in all, both of these products made my bike a lot more pleasurable to ride, so I recommend you give ‘em a try - you’ll be glad you did. EVENT

s most of you Dyna riders out there know, keeping everything in alignment is a must for proper handling. Custom Cycle Engineering offers a new front engine bracket that is a great product that helps in the alignment of the motor and transmission in the frame. The set screws in the bracket allow you to center the motor by moving it from side to side. I noticed when I installed this on my 96 Dyna Convertible that my motor was not straight in the frame and this is with new motor mounts front and rear. I adjusted it with the help of the instructions that are simple and easy to follow. Using square tubing for a straight edge on both sides of the bike, you simply turn the screws until it’s aligned. The hash marks on the bracket help you with this. Tighten up the bolts and you’re done. The whole installation took me about a half hour. You do need to remove the oil filter to install the provided longer bolts, and that makes it easy to adjust the bracket. I noticed an improvement in handling the first time I test rode my bike. I used to have a little wiggle around 80mph and now that’s gone. I say pretty good fix for around $100. Custom Cycle Engineering also sent me their rubber mounted top stabilizer link that fits

Annual Polar Bear Run

January 1 (Lincoln): Clinton’s Custom Cycle started the New Year out right with their Annual Polar Run with a legion of brave bikers riding the hills regardless of the temperature in the Lincoln-Auburn area. This year’s Polar Bear Run the temperature was a freezing 34 degrees. The destination… Auburn’s Sizzler Restaurant - a place with lots of hot coffee and food for hungry bikers. When I asked of CCC’s owner Mike Clinton why he had a run in the coldest month of the year, he replied that “if you are willing to ride when it’s cold, then you’re willing to ride all year.” Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebney of T3 Design Studios

I

MY TWO CENTS: Whoa! What a year!

hope your new year started out as good as mine. This has been a very happy and busy new year! 2016 didn’t exactly knock on my door and say “I’m here!” Hell no! In fact, 2016 kicked in my door and shouted “Get off your duff and start kicking some ass!” And that’s exactly what I’m doing! First I would like to announce that I opened a new shop. I’ll be doing collision repair and building my equipment and getting it ready to market. As some of you know, I own a business called Rack and Pull Industries. I design, manufacture and sell a laser measuring system called the Straight Shooter, used for frame damage assessment and a motorcycle frame straightener called The Rack, which straightens motorcycle frames damaged in collisions. That being said, Rack and Pull Industries in collaboration with NASBIKE Performance has opened a motorcycle collision repair facility located at 2678 Albatross Way in Sacramento. You can check us out at www.rackandpull.com and www.nasbikes.com or better yet, jump on your motorcycle and ride by and say hi and I’ll show you the shop. Here’s the other thing that’s keeping me busy as all get out, we’re going to the big show! That’s right I’m talking about the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati. The V-Twin Expo is the biggest trade show of the year and it’s not open to the public. Only dealers, manufacturers and shop owners and of course, the media. You can check out www.vtwin-expo. com and highlight “Dealer Info”, then highlight “Exhibitor Info” then click on “Floor plan.” I’m in booth #733, right across from Biker’s Choice, Vance and Hines Exhaust Systems and S&S Cycles. I’ll be rubbing elbows with the heavy hitters in the industries. To sum it up in a nut shell, I’m busier than shit right now and my focus is on the trade show and bringing in new business to my new shop. The insurance companies already recognize me and my equipment and they are already sending me work. I’m not sure how this is going to work with me being gone for a week right after I open a new shop, but, it is what it is. My next article will be more entertaining once the trade show is behind me and I can get back to normal. Come on by for a visit, ride up, drop a kick stand and shoot the shit for a while and check out Rack and Pull Industries and NASBIKE Performance. That’s my two cents this month. She Devils MC Naughty or Nice Christmas and Birthday Party December 18 (Hayward): She Devils MC “Naughty Or Nice” Christmas Costume Party and Big Momma’s 60th Birthday Dinner. WOW! That’s like calling Woodstock - Music in the Park! Momma is the founder and President of the She Devils MC in Hayward. When we arrived it was raining pretty good but that didn’t stop anyone from attending the party that started at 7pm on a Friday night. A few people and MC clubs started trickling in about 7:30pm and the rain is getting heavier and still more Clubs start coming in. I was talking to a Henchmen from San Mateo and he told me…”Momma always shows up for their events rain or shine.” I heard the same from all the Clubs I spoke to. It was really awesome seeing so many Clubs and everyone is having a great time. Around 8:30 Dinner was on! They had spaghetti with different types of homemade sauces. And of course I had to try them all…a couple of times! After that I was ready to go home and take a nap. It was so good I couldn’t stop eating. Up to that time Momma was being Momma - she couldn’t just kick back and let the other She Devils take care of everything, she had to be right in the middle of it all - even on her birthday. After all the dinner stuff was cleaned up everyone started hanging out at the bar. I Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 46

went over to take a picture from the end of the bar. I was bent over to get the camera close to the top of the bar when all of a sudden I felt someone rubbing my ass. So I just relaxed got my picture and then turned around real slow. It was Momma and she was feeling very happy. I gave her a big hug and kiss and told her Happy Birthday. Now after that is when the party really started. Here comes Naughty Santa getting on the stage. Not too far behind was his very Naughty Elves. That’s when it got wild, if you ever been to a She Devil party you know what I’m talking about. Santa was a little worn out from all of the lap dancing on his Shiny Red Suit. Ohh! It gets better.

Right about that time my wife, her daughter, and my wife’s sister show up. They were at their own Christmas Party so they arrived a little late; now, her sister and daughter had never been to a biker party before. I think I had as much fun watching them as I did watching the strippers. After an all night wild and fun party, Big Momma shows up at 10am the next morning for the Knyte Riderz RC / UMCOAC Mega Toy Run with a car full of toys! This just shows how much dedication this amazing woman has to charities and events. Happy Birthday Big Momma! We all love and appreciate you. Article and photos contributed by Dan & Nad

All of the ten senior members of the Board of Directors of the company were called into the Chairman’s office one by one until only Bob, the junior member, was left sitting outside. Finally it was his turn to be summoned. He entered the office to find the chairman and the ten other directors seated around a table. He was invited to join them, which he did. As soon as he had sat down the chairman turned to Bob looking him squarely in the eye, and with a stern voice, asked, “Have you ever had sex with Ms. Foyt, my Secretary?” “Oh, no sir, positively not!” Bob replied. “Are you absolutely sure?” asked the chairman “Honest, I’ve never been close enough to even touch her!” “You’d swear to that?” “Yes, I swear I’ve never had sex with Ms. Foyt anytime, anywhere.” “Good, then by process of elimination; you’re the one that needs to fire her. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Per my greeter training manual I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Smart-Mart.” “Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The ugly woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they aint twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you need glasses, or are you just plain stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither in need of glasses nor stupid, madam. I just literally could not believe someone actually slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at SmartMart.” My supervisor said I probably wasn’t cut out for this line of work. I think I’ll try the mattress store that just opened up down the road. Booger died in a fire and his body was burned apparently beyond recognition. The morgue needed someone to identify the body, so they sent

for his two best friends, Cooter and Gomer. The three men had always done everything together. Cooter arrived first, and when the Mortician pulled back the sheet, Cooter said, ‘Yup, his face is burned up pretty bad. You better roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Cooter said, ‘Nope, aint Booger.’ The Mortician thought this was rather strange. So, he brought Gomer in to confirm the identity of the body. Gomer looked at the body and said, ‘Yup, he’s pretty well burnt up. Roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Gomer said, ‘No, that can’t be Booger ‘ The mortician asked, ‘How can you tell?’ Gomer said, ‘Well, Booger had two buttholes.’ ‘What? He had two buttholes!!?’ exclaimed the Mortician. ‘Yup, we never seen ‘em, but everywhere we went, everybody always used to say: ‘There’s Booger with the two buttholes.’ When I was 13, I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend with big boobs. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend with big boobs, but there was no passion, so I decided I needed a passionate girl with a zest for life. In college I dated a passionate girl, but she was too emotional. Everything was an emergency; she was a drama queen, cried all the time and threatened suicide. So I decided I needed a girl with stability. When I was 25 I found a very stable girl but she was boring. She was totally predictable and never got excited about anything. Life became so dull that I decided that I needed a girl with some excitement. When I was 28 I found an exciting girl, but I couldn’t keep up with her. She rushed from one thing to another, never settling on anything. She did mad impetuous things and made me miserable as often as happy. She was great fun initially and very energetic, but directionless. So I decided to find a girl with some real ambition. When I turned 30, I found a smart ambitious girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground, so I married her. She was so ambitious that she divorced me and took everything I owned. I am older and much wiser now, and I am just once again simply looking for a girl with big boobs. I was leaving a Valentine’s Day party and may have had one too many “lover’s martini’s”. I saw the flashing lights and heard the siren.... Cop: Please turn off the truck and exit the vehicle. Me: I’m too drunk; why don’t you get in.

Happy Valentine’s Day All You Loveable Bikers!

I recommend Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys highly as they were fast and effcient when I needed them most. They fully appreciate riders’ needs as they ride and understood my situation fully.
