HOO –HOO Happy New year!! It is with great excitement and energy that we are heading into 2016! We know that we are only scratching the surface of what is possible for you and us and we are determined to make this upcoming year one of expanding the magazine into those parts of NorCal that are not being fully represented. So warn your friends Thunder Roads NorCal is on the march and it is because of all the motivation and encouragement from our readers that fuel our excitement to keep pushing forward. You can look to TRM NorCal to be a valuable resource to locate several upcoming events within Northern California and Northern Nevada. Any NEW EVENTS that are that submitted AFTER the magazine goes to print - you will be able to find on the Thunder Roads NorCal website at (www.ThunderRoadsNorCal. com) making our online events calendar the most CURRENT source of upcoming events available to NorCal riders! With that being said…for you - Event Organizers - simply SUBMIT any upcoming event on our website at (www.ThunderRoadsNorCal.com) and it will be including in BOTH the magazine and online. There is a “Submit Your Event” tab - it’s EZ to do and best of all just like the magazine it is a FREE service we provide to help you let more riders know about your event! As the challenges of 2015 fade off into our past as just memories, those challenges start to seem much less significant in hindsight. Even though we may have been miserable at the time it seems that rising above it all erases all the pain and suffering and we come out the other side better for it. Anyone who has been in the military or competed in sports will know what I’m talking about. This is our reminder to keep living outside of our comfort zone because that is where new opportunities wait for us. (We see some more adventurous souls in faraway places – so this does not pertain to you). But for the rest of you, have you ever thought about hitting an event that you have never been to before? Like if you are from Sacramento, how about going to Sonoma County for an event or if you are from the Bay Area, how about taking a long weekend to catch an event up in Humboldt County, for example? Guaranteed, you are sure to get to see new and different roads and meet some new friends that could last a lifetime. People often tell us that we are so lucky to be able to go all of these places… but the truth is that if we can do it - so can you! We still have a business to run Monday -Friday and have very little time for doing what we would like to do (just like you); but when the weekends come, that’s when we get out (just like you) It’s just up to you where you go… so why not let us help you find some great new opportunities? We look to our CALENDAR OF EVENTS (located in the last few pages of each issue) to find out what is coming up and make our plans - and that’s how we roll! Who knows, we might even get to bump into you in the most unexpected places and we love it when that happens! So check your air pressure, get your bike serviced and let’s ride. Come by our booth at the Easyriders Show in Sacramento to get an autographed copy of the 2016 calendar by the Thunder Roads calendar models. AND, we also all need to get out to the Unification Rally (located just around the corner from Easyriders Show) on Saturday, January 9th 12pm at the State Capitol. See you there!! Ride Destinaton:

PLACERVILLE – CAMINO (HEART OF APPLE HILL)

Man, winter sure puts a damper on opportunities to get out on the old scooter. Especially this year, since we’ve been getting more than the usual rainfall. Actually, I guess that is a good thing, maybe this signals the end of the drought. Sure be nice to get back to normal. So with the weather, the holidays and family commitments, it was a challenge finding time to get out for a ride. Fortunately, our friends Larry and Shannon had invited us up to Apple Hill to cut down a Christmas Tree and as it turned out, it was such a good little day trip that I came back later in the week with the bike and we have made it our destination this month. Don’t know about you, but we had never cut our own tree before, so it was good that they were old hats. We met them, along with their daughter Madison and poocher, Phoenix at Starbucks in Placerville. After some chit-chat and coffee, we made our way to Carson Rd and soon pulled into the crowded parking lot at Abel’s Apples. This is a fine place to do some post-Thanksgiving shopping. There’s an apple specialty store, a bakery with all kinds of goodies, along with a gift store and a large play area for kids. Larry and I kicked it out on the large patio with Phoenix while the girls explored inside. Bags full, it was on to the Indian Rock Tree Farm (www.IndianRockTreeFarm. com). Heading north on Union Ridge, we turned on Hessler Rd and after a real nice woodsy drive, made our way to N Canyon Rd and the tree farm. The owners, Larry and Geri have worked the property for fifty years and are about the friendliest people you’ll find. A lot of other folks had the same idea as us, so we had a short wait before we could head up to the top and pick out a tree. This is a real pretty place. Once you cross the little bridge, there is a large park type area with a running creek that is perfect for picnics or hiking.

Big Foot In Season

Once up top, it was time to hike up the hill and make our choice. They have things sectioned out for the different tree types. Silver Tips, Douglas Firs, Incense Firs etc. We found a seven foot Douglas and yelled out ‘Cutter!’ and within a few minutes, one of the guys came over and got us our tree. He took it down and had it wrapped for us. Pretty simple. I believe you can cut it down yourself if you come prepared. When Larry and the fam had their tree ready, we loaded them onto our vehicles and continued on up the road. N Canyon took us to Larson Road, where a left takes you up to the Jack Russell Farm Brewery (www.jackrussellbrewery. com). Lots of good brew on tap here. After checking out the board, we made our choices (Irish Ale for me). Before leaving, each of us bought a couple of jugs to take home with us. Since they didn’t allow dogs in the patio area, we decided to tailgate it -so it was out to their

truck. Larry lowered the gate and we partied out in parking lot. It was one of those rare sunny afternoons and it was nice to have a couple of brews and soak up the rays. By now it was getting a little late and they had a lot farther home than us, so we decided to call it a day. We had a great time and are certainly looking forward to a repeat next year. Although we did extend the drive a little by going out to Mace Rd and coming back through Camino. As I mentioned earlier, I happened to be up near Placerville a few days later and decided to ride the same route. It was much more fun the second time around on the scoot. Why is that? Ha! That day I also made a couple of extra stops that we should throw in

Picnic Area

next year. One was at the Forester Pub and Grill in Camino (www.foresterpubandgrill.com). If I had known they had such a good Shepherd’s Pie, we would have stopped there for dinner the first time through. Leaving Camino, I would travel down Carson Rd back to Placerville, but would also make a stop at the Boeger Winery (www.boegerwinery.com). If you’re in the area and looking for a nice place to relax, have a glass of wine and enjoy the surroundings, I would definitely recommend a visit. Hopefully, with the holidays over and a few good days of weather, we’ll be able to get out on the road some next month. Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth

JEFF KEITH’S Ride For Reason Joe Bob Keith

Throttle Girl

October 16-17 (Penn Valley): It was time for the much anticipated Jeff Keith’s 5th Annual Ride for Reason. Jeff Keith, the lead singer for Sacramento’s own famous rock band Tesla has a huge heart and a soft spot for kids that might not have the easiest circumstances to get their lives started. Five years ago, Jeff teamed up with event promoter Ryan Fleenor of Higher Purpose Events and the Ride for a Reason was started to raise money for local foster kids. The event has consistently grown each year and Thunder Roads NorCal is proud to have been a part of this event since it started. This year, the event kicked off with a pre-party and full-house at Pistol Pete’s Sports Bar and Nightclub in Auburn. This was a good opportunity to pre-register for the ride happening the following morning; plus, it is a fantastic event of its own! We were all treated to some amazing music by some youngsters that blew everybody away with their talent. Mellowship Slinkies rocked the place and when I found out that they were ages 14, 15, and 16, we were even more impressed! And looking at the faces in the crowed, we were not the only ones that thought this. Now you might have thought that would have been enough - but the place was only getting warmed up because next up was 98 Rock’s Pat Martin and his All Star Band. Now the place was going crazy as the band was killing it on stage, then Jeff Keith jumped in to belt out some great tunes side by side with Pat Martin. It was truly a memorable night and really set the mood on a high note. The following morning, it was time to ride with a scenic ride route was planned from Harley-Davidson of Folsom to the beautiful Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley. It started to drizzle and the pack encountered a parade on the

route which involved a detour and ended up splitting the group up; but that did not deter as riders said it was still a great ride. Once the riders arrived, they were treated to a nice warm tri-tip meal provided by Cravens Ravens BBQ Catering along with several vendors on site. You know it is pretty much guaranteed that an event with Jeff Keith on board – that it’s going to have some great music! Several bands hit the stage along with the Greg Golden Band. If you have not heard these guys yet all I can say is WOW! THEY’RE AWESOME! 98 Rock’s Pat Martin was back again this time to join efforts with Kelly Quinn aka Throttle Girl as guest emcees. (Side note: Throttle Girl is quite the long distant rider which earlier in the year, she set the female record for riding across the country in the shortest amount of time. Throttle Girl and her riding partner, Rob rode from the Atlantic coast in Florida to the Pacific Coast in San Diego. Let’s just say that we won’t divulge how fast she did it because we don’t want anybody breaking any laws trying to best it!) The huge stage and setting at Western Gateway Park is an ideal location to end this event which is built around 3 things: 1) Helping out local foster kids, 2) a great motorcycle ride, and 3) the MUSIC! As in previous years, Jeff jumps onstage to join bands to sing some of our favorite tunes. It is truly a special treat for all of his fans to get to see him up close and get treated to his special vocal talents that are amazing and uniquely Jeff Keith. This year joining the Greg Golden Band was another amazing talent - Randy Scoles, lead singer of Rogue and the late Ronnie Montrose. Special thanks need to go out to the hard

working team of volunteers that work for weeks to make sure this event runs without a hitch; as well as the event sponsors - Throttle Girl, Harley-Davidson of Folsom, Auburn Extreme Power Sports, Pat Martin and 98 Rock, C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin, Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal, Tesla and the fantastically talented Greg Golden Band. And to all that came out this year, we know you had a great time but you also made a difference in a lot of foster kids lives. See you again next year! Article and photos by Stan & Terry Hill. Tech Tips S

Oil Pressure

o you’re sitting in L.A. traffic on the hottest day in August and the oil pressure gauge looks like it’s barely deflecting off zero at idle. Is this necessarily bad (the oil pressure that is)? In most cases, it’s nothing more than an annoying distraction. A better understanding of how oil behaves, some differences in oil pump design, and some other components that play a role will reduce this distraction. Oil pressures are higher when the oil is cold. The difference is the change in the oil’s viscosity. The definition of viscosity is stated as “a quantity expressing the magnitude of internal friction, as measured by the force per unit area resisting a flow in which parallel layers unit distance apart have unit speed relative to one another.” A nice fun fact from the 500 lb. heads of petroleum science, but what the hell does that mean? For the rest of us, the best illustration would be to state that molasses has a higher viscosity than water. As the oil warms up that resistance to flow is reduced with a corresponding reduction in oil pressure. It’s like adding blood thinners to your scoot, if you will. So at low RPM that needle (if you have a gauge) is hovering in the low single digit range, maybe a little higher with the Twin Cam bikes. The oil pressure specification is listed “at 2000 RPM” and generally speaking as long as your pressure reaches that spec at that RPM then there’s really nothing to worry about. For the Evolution and older bikes it’s 12-35 psi, 30-38 psi for Twin Cams. Harley went through a few oil pump renditions. The earlier style big twin pumps were a spur gear type pump. Photo1 There are a number of high-quality after-market replacements which produce higher volume and pressure. This may be a good option for motors that have been worked and operate in the higher horsepower realm. In 1999 Harley took a nod from the Sportster line and went to the gerotor style pump for the all new Twin Cam power train. Photo2 This new pump produced a higher pressure and higher volume than that of its predecessor. In 2006, it was further improved as a necessity to feed the new hydraulic cam chain tensioner shoes. As with the earlier pumps, there are some great after-market alternatives from S&S and Fueling to name two. These pumps will increase pressure and volume, but are limited to the functionality of another component, the pressure relief valve. Whether you stick with your stock oil pump or go with one of the alternatives, if you are having pressure issues the relief valve is a

good place to start. The majority of oil pressure failures with the Twin Cam engines are a seized relief valve. To check this, follow the service manual procedure for removing the cam plate. Drive out the retaining pin with a punch and remove the spring. Using a magnet draw the valve out of the port. If it doesn’t move, it is seized and the cam plate is junk. If it does come out, there are a few things you can do while you’re in there. You can buy this nifty little pressure testing jig from Feuling or go to your favorite shop and have them pressure test your plate.

The stock spring is designed to hold the valve seated until oil pressure reaches 38 psi. This is referred to as “pop-off pressure.” If the valve and seat are worn, oil pressure can leak down. This causes lower oil pressures and can be verified with the testing jig. Low pressure air is used for the test and there should be no leak down until the valve unseats at the maximum pressure. This tool also allows you to manipulate the stock spring to increase your oil pressure. You can stretch the spring a few thousandths at a time, checking the pop-off each time until the desired pressure is obtained. It will, however, be limited to the oil pump’s capacity. As a side note, while you’re experimenting with spring tension, in lieu of driving the retaining pin in and out every time, use the punch that was used to drive the pin out as a retainer. Drive the pin back in only after your spring is set. Feuling sells a replacement spring that when combined with one of their high output oil pumps will bring your oil pressure to 55-60 psi. The Feuling spring is on the left with a stock spring next to it. Oil pumps do have an inspection criteria so don’t forget to check them out! We’ll cover that in a later column. Ride safe! Tis The Season of Toy Runs 39TH ANNUAL SACRAMENTO TOY RUN

November 29 (Sacramento): Today was a day that Mother Nature smiled down upon the Modified Motorcycle Association annual toy run and blessed them with beautiful weather; and we all know that with that more riders will come out which means more toys for the Marine’s Toys for Tots. The Marines say that this is their single biggest toy contribution each year and that is something that the hard working people at MMA should be very proud of. MMA has now been organizing this Toy Run on now for an impressive 39 years! For their 40th annual next year, we all as riders need to show up in huge numbers to show our appreciation for the hard work that they do fighting for our biker rights throughout the year. First, let’s back up to an early Saturday morning at Channel 31 with the Good Day Sacramento show broadcasting that it was the eve of this great Toy Run with 30+ bikers showing their support for this event. Morning show host, Cody Stark interviewed MMA’s Gus Alvarez and Chuck “Shotgun” Peterson who shared how the Marines and the Toys For Tots had helped his family as a little boy and left a profound impression upon him to this day, and Marine Staff Sergeant Legler, who was shy with my camera at first and tried to convince me that she was not very photogenic. I informed her that she was “the prettiest Marine that I had ever seen”- and trust me, I have seen a lot of Marines over the years! Later that evening at the Marines MC Clubhouse was the Toy Run Pre-Party with live music from by Dave Channell with his band Fire and Wheels. On Sunday morning, as the day warmed up bikes were rolling into the start at the Sacramento 6 Drive In Theaters just off of Hwy 50; and at 1pm sharp, bikes were escorted by the Sacramento Metro Fire Department. It is quite a sight to see all the bikes rolling up to the state capitol with Marines waiting to greet the riders and their unwrapped toys which were loaded onto their trucks for kids that are in need. It was a fun and satisfying day for everyone involved knowing that there are a lot of kids out there getting some pretty cool toys for Christmas - thanks to the Marines Toys for Tots, MMA, and all of the bikers that participated for this annual event. Tis The Season of Toy Runs: Rain or Shine Tis The Season of Toy Runs 24TH ANNUAL NEVADA COUNTY FOOD AND TOY RUN

December 12 (Nevada City): It was a brisk but dry morning so we figured that the turnout for this toy run and one of Nor Cal favorites would be a big one. We were not disappointed as we rolled into the huge parking lot at the Nevada County offices, as it was already full of bikes with more than an hour before kickstands were up! This has become a tradition for riders of all types from Sacramento, Yolo, and Placer and of course Nevada Counties. The toy run was lead by organizers and followed by Emma and Carlo on brand new red Indian Motorcycles provided by C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin. Riders enjoy this run because it takes riders right through beautiful downtown Nevada City were town folks and visitors line the festively decorated streets to cheer and welcome the riders, then this is repeated again just down the road in Grass Valley. Bikes are decorated with all kinds of Christmas ornaments and unwrapped presents for the kids. Saddle bags are full of canned and boxed food items as this is also a food drive. As the bikes rolled into the Nevada County Fairgrounds entering through Gate 4, it was reported according to the Nevada County Food and Toy Run Facebook page that 1,445 bikes were counted. Now that is not the only way into the fairgrounds so we can only assume the final count was somewhat north of that. Time after time, we heard riders say ‘what a joy’ it was to see the reactions of the kids on the receiving end as they made their way to the fairgrounds to deliver the toys. This event was a huge success thanks to all that show up and give back to the kids of the community. Article and photos by Stan & Terry Hill. Tis The Season of Toy Runs

16TH ANNUAL HATT’S SAN QUENTIN TOY RUN December 6 (San Rafael): The weather gods had started this special day with rain and gloomy gray skies, but this was the 16th Annual Hatt’s Toy Run to benefit the children of San Quentin inmates, and Norcal Bikers would not let a little rain dampen the hearts of these children who look forward to the migration of bikers returning every year to brighten up their holidays. Organizing founders Bret and Denise Hatt have been playing Santa and Mrs.Claus for the children of San Quentin inmates since 2000, and have watched this special toy run grow every year. This year’s run was no different, with bikers braving the elements arriving from all over Northern California to support this worthy cause. Bret’s helper elves of the Barbarian Brotherhood assisted in organizing the proceedings by greeting the bikers, collecting toys and doing the poker run at San Rafael’s Pier 15 Bar and Restaurant. As if by divine intervention, the rains subsided just in time for Bret and Denise to load all the donated toys onto a couple of his 4 wheel sleighs and lead the excited bikers up to the San Quentin Family Center where the kids were excitedly awaiting arrival of Santa’s biker angels! The children were patiently assembled at the top of the hill at the Center and cheered wildly as the wave of bikers came into view. The bikers were just as excited to see the children as they were the bikers. The kids made friendship bracelets for all the bikers this year and presented them upon arrival, a memorable gift for sure. Santa Claus was able to put in a special appearance too, much to the kids and

bikers delight. In addition, the San Quentin organizers and children read the bikers a special prayer and presented MC bike bells to Bret and some organizing members of which the children attached to their bikes. As a ride that touches your heart, you can’t wait to come back and help Bret again! And what a special year this was for the biker community to help

these kids and also celebrate the Hatt’s wedding anniversary. Thereafter, the procession disbursed to carry on with the poker run and barbecue at Forest Knolls to cap off a perfect day that weather gods would not and could not stop. Article and photos contributed by Gary & Mary Hoffman

Tis The Season of Toy Runs 13TH ANNUAL SANTA CLAUS TOY RUN

November 21 (Sacramento): As we walked around the Renegade Classics parking lot (www.renegadeclassicsca. com) , we couldn’t help but notice every type of bike imaginable rolling into the 13th Annual Santa Claus Toy Run. You name it - Harley, Victory, Indian, Slingshot, Spyders, BMW, Kawasaki, Ducati and even a few Vespas. Many riders and bikes were creatively decorated with tinsel and every ride had an unwrapped toy securely strapped on for the ride. Santa and his helpers were also there for the ride! Fortunately, this year the weather conditions were ideal for a pack ride to Thunder Valley Casino Resort (www.thundervalleyresort. com); and that is exactly what they did....in droves - over 1600 riders. Trust me of the years with inclement toy run weather, it is very much appreciated to have a designated level in the parking garage for motorcycle parking only. A record number of bikers made their way inside the casino to hand off their toys to several awaiting charity volunteers from RISE, Inc. (www.riseinc.org) on hand to strategically stack toys into a huge pile on the main stage on the casino floor. During the afternoon, several folks took advantage of Thunder Valley Casino $500 slot play opportunity throughout the sprawling casino. Vendors and the festivities were located in the Pano Hall as folks grabbed a bite to eat from the buffet line and to listen to Rogue (www.roguerocks.com) perform on stage. Between band breaks, swag was tossed to the crowd and the opportunity to win a $500 gift card from Renegade Classics and a weekend getaway at Thunder Valley Casino Resort. Right on cue, the crowd gathered in front of the main stage for the big raffle giveaway for a 2015 HD Dyna from Guidera’s Harley-Davidson in Yuba City (www.guidera.com)! As the winning raffle ticket was pulled, event promoter Troy Rowsey shared with the crowd that the raffle ticket had a lipstick kiss on it, but more importantly the winner must be present to win! Wait for it...wait for it…and the winner was Shelly Rubel from Yuba City! And yes she WAS there - congratulations! ‘Tis bikers that come together so that local charities are able to make the holidays bright for underprivileged children and their families! Tis The Season of Toy Runs RED AND WHITE 2015 SONOMA COUNTY XMAS TOY RUN December 12 (Cotati): The tight nit community in Sonoma County was getting ready to respond to the need to make the kids in the area’s Christmas something that they could look forward to. For weeks before this outstanding annual event the Sonoma County Hells Angels along with the huge support from all in the North Bay Motorcycle Association members were working hard to pull this event together. From putting out and collecting toy bins, to getting all the other logistical stuff together. Raffle prizes for the riders, food and drinks, entertainment, you get the picture there is a lot to do. Once again this year a huge thank you needs to go out to Sonoma Harley-Davidson and their wonderful crew that hosted the start of the Toy Run. Their support means a lot to the riders, the kids and their families and the community as a whole. Pin Up Girl Coffee was on hand at the dealership to make sure everybody could stay warm with a variety of delicious coffee, a nice treat on a cool morning. After the riders all had a chance to drop off their toys and do a bit of meet and greet it was time to get the show on the road. The route was direct as the bikers were escorted by a truck and trailer that were full to the brim with toys. As the pack rolled onto the street of the Sonoma Hells Angels club house they could see a sea of kids escorted by their parents, grandparents or guardians of all ages from infants to teenagers; they were lined up six deep all the way down the block and around the corner. The excited kids and grateful parents had been lining up since 8am for the toy give away that would begin at 2pm. The kids were all greeted by Santa as they were lead into a room that looked like something straight out of Santa’s work shop with the toys stacked up high. It can be cold wet and a bit nasty in this part of California in the winter so the club members had also collected 200 pairs of gloves that they gave out to the kids. After the toys had all been given out the riders congregated for a warm meal and some outstanding music by the Jodi Counter Band when the band took a break it was time for some raffle prizes. You can always count on some great raffle prizes from TV’S, hand painted helmets, custom painted mail boxes and even a custom painted toilet seat. Huge thank you needs to go out to Alton’s Performance Auto

Repair in Santa Rosa who has been a big help for this event every year along with Rod Buntjer Bail Bonds of Santa Rosa for their much appreciated support. Thanks goes out to the Sonoma Hells Angels for providing a place where parents and their children were welcome to come and to feel safe as the community comes together to show some love to the kids in the community. Tis The Season of Toy Runs 20TH ANNUAL GOLD COUNTRY TOY RUN December 5th (Auburn): The Christmas spirit was in overdrive once again this time it was the Gold Country Toy Run presented by C&E Auburn Indian & V-Twin and Lone Wolf Cycles in Auburn. Gathering at the Auburn Rec Park, it was a festive atmosphere as everyone got a warm cup of coffee and signed up for the run. This toy run is special for several reasons, one of which the kids are lined up and eagerly waiting for the bikers and the toys that are making their way to the Auburn Rec Center. I think it is pretty cool when the bikers get to see the kids faces light up as they choose that special toy that they get to take home; plus the other cool part about this toy run is that the riders get a police escort through Auburn. In town, folks come out to the street to wave at the bikers as they roll by just adding to the charm of this town and this run. As the riders came rolling in, I could tell that it was a big turnout. We were later informed by Emma who was on the microphone welcoming bikers kids and their families that there were somewhere between 600 and 700

bikes that showed up. There was a line of tables almost the full length of the basketball court and the toys were piled so high on them that they were hardly able to contain them. The kids visited with Santa by the Christmas tree then proceeded to the toys. One thing I have noticed at a toy run where the families are there is that it is not only a moment of great joy for the kids, but it is also a moment of great relief for their parents too! As I look back on the photos I can see “that look” on their faces of “thank God, my child did not have to go without this year”. They are very grateful to the biker community that came out to show some support during their time of need. Kudos to everyone involved - you did a fantastic job organizing this run! THE RAZ REPORT: 3RD ANNUAL MID-CAL CYCLE TOY RUN

N

ovember 28 (West Sacramento): The Saturday following Thanksgiving is an advertised rain-or-shine event which has been held in the rain in the past; today’s early morning clear blue skies at 30’ish degrees, felt like 50’ish degrees in the sun when standing still, 40’ish degrees in the wind, although a little nippy was welcome. Bruce and Robert of Mid-Cal Cycle (www. mid-calcycle.com) provided riders with donuts and Starbuck’s coffee at the shop during the registration period - thank you very much. The toy box at the shop already had a lot of toys that had been collected so far. A photographer the West Sacramento News Ledger newspaper attended and a nice article came out in the following Wednesday’s newspaper. Posed for a group photo and directly afterwards the group of thirty motors fired up. First stop was the West Sac Sports Bar & Grill on Jefferson Blvd with more toys loaded into a pickup truck at each stops along the way. Stops included a ride out on River Road to Elkhorn Saloon Country Bar & Grill, with more riding and collecting toys - the group rode on to the Mecca Club... then to Club Pheasant... then to Streets of London... then to Vince’s Italiana Restaurante...a day of riding and collecting toys for those less fortunate - great day, great ride, great cause, and LOTS OF TOYS! Ummmmmm...feeeeels good – it was a merry christmas for all!

ob Bryant, owner of this 1993 90th Anniversary Edition DYNA Wide Glide wanted to make his ride just right for him and have it run just as strong - he knew exactly where to take it. Bryant went straight to his good friend, Danny Ray of Precision Cycles (209) 526-5003 in Modesto. Danny has been maintaining and customizing bikes from here for years and this is a perfect example of the work that he specializes in on early and late models. We’d also like to thank Danny for suggesting this noble backdrop for our RIDE PRIDE photo shoot. A castle setting that is unique and available for weddings and special events, Kasteel Noz (www. kasteelnoz.com) is nestled in San Joaquin Valley among acres of walnut orchards near the town of Snelling. We were so impressed with this photo shoot venue that we included it in our 2016 Calendar with our lovely Thunder Roads model, Katie. " Biker Babe” Blues “J

oelle come on! The rain stopped! We’re ready for you!” I took a deep breath, glanced around for a sign of escape--and still seeing none--threw off my blanket and headed for the outdoor stage at the No Scum Allowed Saloon in White Oaks, New Mexico. Shivering in my black bathing suit and high heels, I walked carefully to avoid slipping on the wet pavement. It was 44 degrees. I was there to do a calendar shoot with another model—the shoot was one of the rally’s featured events, along with a live band and a wet T-shirt contest. Behind me under the covered patio, about 75 die-hard bikers, the kind (you know who you are) who flip off the weather girl and her shitty forecast and ride anyway. Usually about 1,200 attend this annual May bike rally at New Mexico’s best cowboy/biker bar, but these few huddled out of the wind and rain in their full leathers. In front of me, Jim stood beside his beautiful blue shining fatboy, from which he’d just wiped off the raindrops. The photographer gave me directions while I posed on Jim’s bike, acting as if I knew what I was doing, and wondering if my goosebumps would show up in the final pictures. My hair blew in the raging wind under roiling gunmetal skies as I shifted and smiled, trying to ignore the chuckling audience. Did I feel ridiculous? Do you have to ask? “Ok, think I got it,” said the photographer, finally (more on him later). I headed back inside the bar towards the wood stove, just as the first hailstones zinged down behind me. The weather never did improve; in fact the other model and I had to do the rest of the shoot inside the bar. I made money that day, but in the end, there was no calendar, and I decided I’d rather write about bikes than pose beside them in a bikini. Besides, the operator-and-photographer of the modeling company ended up being a fast talking con artist who owed money to me and the girls. Quite a few bikers were screwed over,

too. The guy went underground, and in fact, I think there’s an MC in New York still after him. While he may owe me money, in a way I owe him—because I learned a lot during my six months as a “biker babe.” For one thing, I met some great people, like fellow models Rachel and Ashley and dozens of great bikers. We keep in touch on social media and I’ve no doubt we’ll be meeting at a run or rally someday. I also learned something important about the biker world. It’s probably the one place where a woman my age (45+!) can pose in a swimsuit and not feel like a partycrasher. Can you imagine that with any other sport or lifestyle? If you’re over 26, you’re over the hill. It made me see how bikers love women of all ages, and how women in their 50s and 60s and beyond can rock it with a tank top, head band and snug jeans over heeled boots. They don’t surrender to mainstream society’s ssumption that aging for women means invisibility, as if every year a woman fades a little more from view. They don’t pack up their toys and sit on the sidelines. On her 50th birthday, one of my biker lady friends did a photo shoot with her bike. She posted the pix on FB and both men and women cheered her on. In the biker world, the years just mean you’ve ridden a lot of miles, literally, either on your own bike or on the back. The women who love the wind and the life have a constant twinkle in their eye. Whether they choose to wear an outfit that’s blingy or baggy, the main thing is they love the words, “Let’s ride.” For bikers, there’s nothing hotter. I love the biker culture for that, for the freedom to feel and be sexy no matter what your age, no matter what or how you ride, no matter what you wear. That’s what it’s all about, after all, isn’t it? Respect and freedom.

Progressive’s 2015 International

People’s Choice November 6 -8 (Sacramento): If it had anything to do with motorcycles, you could find it at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show. This year, the show moved from San Mateo to Sacramento setting up at Cal Expo the home of the California State Fair. With the show came most all of the major motorcycle manufactures demo trucks with fleets of their 2016 bikes for demo rides. Inside two of the large buildings were full of vendors to include all of the new bikes and exciting new products that are available to riders in the New Year. No matter what style of rider you are dirt, road, track there was plenty for you to see here. Speaking of tracks and dirt there was a track set up were spectators could watch some exciting Super Moto Racing during the day, and after the sun went down the flat track racers came out to twist their throttles under the lights. There were also Jason Britton and the No Limit stunt riders showing their skills with crazy acrobatics on 2 wheels out in the parking lot. It appears as the move to Cal Expo in Sacramento seemed to have been a good thing with more vendors and it seemed like the crowds were much bigger as well. On the main stage, throughout the show they had a great line up of guest speakers like Erin Sills who holds 12 world speed record out at the Bonneville Salt Flats talking about how it feels to go that fast on 2 wheels and the camaraderie of the racers and crews that make up this tight nitch group of speed demons. Another speaker was Doug Danger who holds the world record for jumping a Harley-Davidson motorcycle 251 ft over 42 cars in June of 2015. Doug also told of his inspiring battle with stage 4 cancer. He came out on the stage in the recognizable red, white and blue suit that Evil Kenival wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated back in the day and it is the same suit that Doug wore when he made his world record jump. Another popular spot was the Flo’s Chop Shop where you could get a free shaves and beard and/or mustache trim. Or in

my case Terry must have thought I was getting a bit too scruffy, as she volunteered me for a beard trim. By the time Justine was done I realized that Terry was right and I guess I did need a little cleaning up. Inked Magazine had a booth there with one of their beautifully inked models on hand to meet and greet fans and just across from them was the 21 Helmets Inked display. Featuring a nationwide collection of ¾ helmets on display along with 3 local area tattoo artists from Legacy Tattoo in addition to a graphic artist from the bay area. Pretty cool stuff - as spectators watched early on, then could come back in an hour or so to see

His Indian was a highlight for enthusiasts attending the show. This bike features a custom air intake, a chopped Liberty sidecar, stretched bags, custom paint, custom Chop deVille exhaust pipes and LED lighting. (Shaun received another award in Sacramento. Renowned artist, Makoto Endo, selected Shaun’s custom scout Café Racer for his motorcycle drawing. Endo paints a bike on a large canvas at the Progressive booth. And he only uses chopsticks.) MOD HARLEY 1st – Andrew Ursich – 1980 Sportster named Brass Monkey 2nd – Ernest Cruz – 2012 Harley-Davidson Road Glide named Trouble 12 Andrew Ursich started out building custom hot rods. And during his spare time he decided to build a bike from a basket case Sporty. Andrew hand made the headlight bracket, then the fender struts, the inspection cover and the shift and brake linkages. Then his attention turned to making and modifying the sheet metal. He made the battery box, the ignition counsel, point cover, and modified the pipes from straight drags to upswept puppies. FREESTYLE 1st – Jon Macdowell (Bonneville Customs) 2014 Custom Boardtrack 2nd – Mark Shell (Bonneville Customs) 2007 Anarchy Disruptor When Jon woke up on Friday, the day of the load in, someone had vandalized his trailer. The bike features paint by Blair Peterson, S&S Shovelhead, open chain primary, split tanks and a custom girder frontend. His custom built boardtrack scoot rolls with 24” wheels front and back. Jon also walked away with a Speakeasy Originals’ ring entitled Made in America.

THE RAZ REPORT: 1ST ANNUAL THUNDER FOR VETS

O

ctober 10 (Vacaville): The first annual Thunder4Vets event was hosted by Iron Steed Harley-Davidson in Vacaville. Chris Snow, a Lyon Real Estate agent from Davis was the organizer of this event which benefitted the Wounded Warriors Family Support. This new event had it together with sponsors, vendors, T-shirts and ride pins. Shortly after 10am about one hundred bikes fired up for the short ride east on I-80, then east on Midway Road to the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. The ceremony consisted of a music prelude, welcome, presentation of colors, pledge of allegiance, national anthem, invocation, wreath presentation, rifle salute [oh yeah!], taps, benediction, retiring of colors, music postlude. The ride continued east on Midway Road then North on Pedrick Road to Plainfield Station for a brief pit stop; then west on County Road E-6 to I-505 south back to Vacaville. Trying to round up a bunch of veterans for a photo opportunity reminded me of the time I was watching my border collie trying to herd Guinea pigs... it wasn’t happening, but, we did manage to get a gaggle of vets, including Iron Steed H-D’s Dave Allen, who, in fact is a navy veteran of over 21 years... he was in the navy when it was cool - (when they had sails!!!)... to stand still long enough to take a picture. Sounds on-site were provided by 101.9 the Wolf and The Dave Russell Band - they play both kinds of music... country, and western... and they’re good at it too. The event organizer, Chris Snow, along with the support of Iron Steed Harley-Davidson facilitated by Dave Allen and other volunteers, such as Chris Kinley (MA2) and Shannon Kinley, raised $10,000 on this, the first year of the event! And Chris vows to make next year’s run bigger, better, and raise more for the Wounded Warriors. WOW! Really good job Chris, et al. W

here the heck did 2015 go? It seems like just yesterday I was setting our vision for 2015. The years, like shooting stars, seem to be flying by faster and faster each year. Birthday candles seem to be blown out faster and faster, and the moment we turn around we are another year older. We look back, and the years fly by so fast, do we ever get to accomplish the things we had our hearts set on in the first place? Did we do the important things we promised to do at the beginning of the year? Did we love more, laugh more, save more, and enjoy more? Or did we just spin our wheels and our resources on meaningless things like, sitting at home watching “the box” instead of riding with a friend. Did we spend our weekends complaining about the weather instead of sitting in our buddies’ garage shootin’ the breeze? Did we continue to give our employers all our time, when the important people in our lives are craving for quality time? Don’t get caught up in the debilitating disease of the “Should’ve, Could’ve, Would’ve-itis”. That is the disease that catches so many people. It’s the time you look back on your life and say, “Man, I should have went on that ride, I should have called more often, or I should have spent more time with that person”. It’s the times you say, “I could have went all the way, but I didn’t think I could do it, I could have done so much more, I just didn’t think I had enough time, or I could have helped so many more people, but I was just too tired”. The last one seems to be the worst reflection of all, as it reflects our intentions with a lack of follow through, “I would have done more, but nobody wanted to help me, I would have given so much more, but I didn’t trust anyone to give too, or I would have loved my family more if they would just do things my way”. So many people live their lives with this disease that the family and everything it stands for is deteriorating before our very eyes. I propose to you a new vision for 2016. I propose to you a year of action. A year that

no matter what, you will make a difference. You will make a difference in your family, in your friends, in your faith, in your fitness, and your finances. I call this the 5 F’s of happiness. The concept is to really focus on these 5 F’s throughout the year. I listed them in order that works for me. You can rearrange the first 4 anyway you want, but leave the last F for finances last because if you work hard to solidify your family, then your friendships, then your faith, and then your fitness, the finance part will usually fall into place. Your home life will improve, and you will have loyal friends that trust and believe in you. You will find power in your faith that will leave you feeling good about yourself, which will help you get fit and healthy. By doing these 4 highly positive and motivating things, you will begin to recognize others noticing you and your improved life that will start to open the doors you always thought were locked. I share this as I have used this principle in my life for many years and when I forget, my life suffers. When I start to refocus my energy where they really matter (The 5 F’s), like a miracle, my life and situations improve. 2016 could be the best year we have ever experienced if we just “TAKE ACTION” and do what matters most “No Matter What”! Love your families more, improve your friendships more, solidify your faith, and improve your fitness. Like a miracle, your finances will improve and you will be able to do more of what you all love to do and that is RIDING! Make it a point to come visit Thunder Road Church in 2016. It will make all the difference! Proverbs 16:3 - “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed”. (NLT)

5th Annual Red & White Pasta Feed November 7 (Penryn): The Valencia Club was ground zero once again for this important annual event that brings the biker community together to raise some much needed funds for the Koinonia Group House for Teens (www.teens.kfh.org) in Loomis. This organization brings hope to teens with substance abuse issues, giving them hope for a brighter future in the process. The other beneficiary of this event is the Penryn Fire department. This is a two part event, with the first day being the pasta feed and party with live music from Fire and Wheels will bring bikers out to one of the best biker hangouts in NorCal - the Valencia Club known to most as the VC and its where all the donations come in. Doc and the rest of the crew from Hells Angels MC Sacramento work hard first to make sure that all that show up have a great time and second to get the donations to the kids and to the local fire department. Fast forward to part two of this event that happened on November 22 where we all met back at the VC before a short little pack ride out to the Koinonia House to deliver the first check to a very applicative staff. Several of the teens were there as well and when a

couple of the bikers said “go ahead - sit on the bike” obviously hesitant at first; but when they realized it was really ok - they were grinning from ear to ear as I am sure dreams (that we all had) of flying down the highway with not a care in the world danced through their heads. Next it was off to the Penryn Fire Department and as if on cue as the bikes were pulling up, the station’s doors open and the fire department was getting ready to roll out on a call. Doc had just enough time to deliver a check but this is a small outfit so when they get a call it is all hands on deck. We got an appreciative wave as the fire trucks raced down the road to be of service to somebody in need. What a great way to end this event to realize in that moment that the bikers had come together to help the very people that are providing so much help to their community. Great job to all and we hope to see you again next year. Article and photos by Stan & Terry Hill. Additional photos contributed by Forrest Coss.

MY TWO CENTS: Broke my %#@*&%^ belt!! This is going to be a short story this month because I was sick as a dog for most of the month. Here I go, enjoying my ride home in the fast lane, minding my own damn business, when the traffic turns to shit and slows to a crawl. I decided to split lanes so I moved to the right and at that very second a white car rear ended a mini-van to my immediate left, where I just moved from, and blasted me with debris. This isn’t the first time this happened to me. I got hit in the face, shoulder and all over my bike with crap flying off of both vehicles, but it didn’t hurt so I kept going, but I heard a noise like something was stuck to my back wheel, so I started to pull over to the shoulder of the freeway. By the time I got to the slow lane the noise was gone and everything seemed alright. Screw it! Everything seemed fine and I wasn’t hurt so I jumped back into traffic and headed for home, naturally, splitting lanes again. By the time I got home I had forgotten all about the close call and never gave it a second thought. A week and a half later I’m in the drive way getting ready to take off for work. I click into first gear and nothing happened. I started looking around and my wife is pointing to the ground under my bike and I seen my belt lying on the ground. I guess the only good thing is there couldn’t be a better place to break the belt than my drive way. It took three attempts to get all the parts I needed to change my belt because the dealership closed by the time I got there three times in one week!!! Finally I got the parts I needed to change my belt because I went home early, because I felt like crap and I knew I was starting to get sick. Boy did I get sick! I got the flu and it kicked my ass! I have never been that sick for that long. After two weeks I started to change my belt. Once I got my back wheel off I noticed my rear pulley was riddled with sharp little gouges on the top edge of the pulley, thus chewing up my belt. It cut my fingers when I was checking the rear pulley. This really pissed me off because I knew when it happened, and I chose to ride off and not deal with it. There’s nothing worse than feeling shit and having to deal with replacing a drive belt on a Road Glide. I’m feeling better now and my bike is whole again. The only good thing I can think of regarding this broken belt is, I have a new belt and rear brakes and that’s one less thing I have to deal with when I start the New Year. That’s my two cents. Stay well, stay healthy and ride like hell! Happy New Year! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 53

A

s a kid, I was something of a princess. You know the kind; I made my parents pick me up around the corner because I was embarrassed of our car. However, I grew up with a dad that didn’t have a car, only a bike. Only one kid could go at a time, and I can remember it being my turn at Thanksgiving. Riding on the back of the bike freezing cold at night… no warm gear, no fun AT ALL. But despite all of that, I think a passion for riding was planted in my blood. I spent years bumming rides on the back of buddies bikes. When I was in my late 30’s, my dad asked me if I was ready for my own bike. I was so excited. I really didn’t know anything…we went and looked at a 98 Harley Davidson Dyna Superglide and he asked me what I thought. I had no idea! I just muttered “Ummmm OK”. We bought the bike, went to a parking lot and practiced. I’d taken the rider safety course but I had a lot to learn. I loved it though; being afraid and doing it anyway, and the feeling of empowerment that came when I successfully did something new. I tried to ride as much as I could, jumping on my bike after work and taking off by myself almost every day. I can remember getting on the freeway, heart racing, and getting off the next exit. One of my first experiences was going to a public event, trying to park, getting off balance while backing in and promptly dropping the bike. I had thought I looked so cool pulling up in all my cute gear, that idea got smashed pretty quickly! But I have never been a quitter, so I just rode as many miles as I could and slowly my skills improved. What I was learning, but didn’t even realize it at the time, was that I could do anything if I set my mind to it. At one point I had to sell my bike, but eventually I got another. This time I picked the bike I liked. As soon as I sat on the 09 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe I thought “oh, this is what it should feel like”. I have always loved the 50’s, so the fishtail pipes, whitewalls, and vintage look were made for me. I bought “Lucy”, and it was a proud moment for me that this bike was ALL ME. I promptly bought a rhinestone encrusted gas cap and derby cover for a girly touch. In De-

cember 2013, I decided to start a new business, and launched Pinup Girl Coffee Co. (www.pinupgirlcoffeeco.com) My company logo is a rendition of Rosie the Riveter, one of the most iconic images of a strong woman in history. Little did I know all the lessons I had learned from riding; perseverance, faith, being scared but doing it anyway, feeling fully alive while doing something,….would serve me well in this new venture. All roads led to here! One of the first events I made a pitch for was the Redwood Run. I am so happy in that trailer serving my favorite breed of people in the world…bikers! They are the most fun, generous, and kind people we deal with. It always feels like home to do a bike event. I am incredibly grateful that I get to live my dream combining the things I love most! I love to see new women riders. We think we are just learning to ride, but in my opinion it is so much more. It is an opportunity to build confidence and get empowered. It changes us, makes us stronger. Cheers to strong women, may we be them, know them, and raise them!

Santa: Every year, alll I ask for is a big fat bank account and a slim body. Yet again this year you mixed the two up, like you’ve done ever since I was 40 years old. Are you drinking too much of the Elves “special” Eggnog or what? A woman goes into the Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Bass Pro Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, “Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?” He says, “Ma’am, I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.” She doesn’t believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, “That’s a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. test line. It’s a good all-around combination and it’s on sale this week for only $40.00.” She says, “It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!” As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. Oh, that sounds like a Master Card,” he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, “That’ll be $54.50 please.” The woman is totally confused by this and asks, “Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $40.00? How did you get $54.50?” He replies, “Yes, Ma’am. The rod and reel is $40.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Bear Repellent is $3.50.” Little Becky was gifted a parrot that cussed like a drunken sailor. Tried as she might, she could not get the parrot to stop cussing so raunchy and acting out. Finally, after an all-day fight and lecture to the bird, Becky, in desperation, threw up her hands, grabbed the bird and stuck him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked on the door. Then, suddenly there was total silence.Fearing that she’d hurt the parrot, Becky quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto her outstretched arm and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my “tude” and promise to be a good bird. Also, may I be so bold as to inquire what the turkey did wrong?

On the morning that Daylight Savings Time ended I stopped in to visit my aging friend, Bolo. He was busy covering his penis with black shoe polish. I said to him, “You better get your hearing checked buddy ...... You’re supposed to turn your clock back”. For the New Year, please note that condom makers do not guarantee “Safe Sex” by even a percentage anymore. Case in fact, a friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot 5 times by the woman’s husband that he was humping. A man wakes up in the hospital bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, “Ah, I see you’ve regained consciousness. Now, you probably won’t remember, but you were in a huge pile-up on the freeway. You’re going to be okay, you’ll walk again and everything, however, your penis was severed in the accident and we couldn’t find it.” The man groans, but the doctor goes on, “You have $9000 in insurance compensation coming and we now have the technology to build a new penis. They work great but they don’t come cheap. It’s roughly $1000 an inch.” So, the doctor says, “You must decide how many inches you want. But understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit overwhelmed. If you had a nine incher before and you decide to only invest in a five incher now, she might be disappointed. It’s important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision.” The man agrees to talk it over with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day, “So, have you spoken with your wife?” “Yes I have,” says the man. “And has she helped you reach a decision?” “Yes” says the man. “What is your decision?” asks the doctor. “We’re getting granite counter tops.” Someone broke into my house last week. They didn’t take my TV, just the remote. Now they drive by and change the channels. Sick bastards!!! The Doctor asked a pregnant prostitute, “Do you know who the father is?” She promptly replied, “Hey, Doctor dumb ass, if you ate a can of beans would you know which one made you fart?!”
