une is here and with it comes a lot of great riding with events like the Redwood Run which is coming up quick! Get your gear together and join TRM NorCal as we all come together for a good time. Let’s remember what this run is all about…the camaraderie. It’s about meeting new friends and catching up with old friends while hanging out at the Riverview Ranch and listening to some kick-ass music…THAT’S the bonus for us at the Redwood Run! And just in case you didn’t know this... the Kiwanis of the Redwoods are a small group of VOLUNTEERS that have taken on the monumental task of making our beloved Redwood Run happen each year. Their reward for doing this are the proceeds raised for the local kids in the area – so let’s do our part by showing them some appreciation for all they do and help them raise the money for their time and efforts to bring us all together (cause that ain’t easy!) and let’s help make this another epic Old School Rally for the memory books! Now that it is full blown summer time, the temps are rising - so please take care of yourself whether you are hanging at an event all day or on a long ride, REMEMBER to keep yourself hydrated...with water! Not doing so can put you in a world of hurt and it will sneak up on you fast. I learned the hard way several years ago pushing too hard and not taking the time to get fluids (water) in me. The end result was a bad case of heat exhaustion and because my body was unable to regulate its temperature on its own – I got sick as a dog. I would puke up any water that I did drink, I had cramps all over my body and was in a very confused state of mind that I started to try to do really dumb things to try to fix myself. Fortunately for me, my older brother recognized the signs of heat exhaustion and forced my stubborn-self into a bath tub of ice water. This made me mad as hell but I was so cramped up and weak I could not do anything but cuss him out. Thank God he didn’t listen to my complaining because under the circumstances he did the right thing and probably saved me from going into a more dangerous physical condition. This was a very unpleasant experience and could have been disastrous so please take my word for it - it is not worth it, so drink plenty of H20. Energy drinks, beer, whiskey will not help your situation...so drink up...with some good old fashion WATER! Need an idea for Father’s Day on June 19th? How about a one year subscription to Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal? For only, $30 it won’t break the bank and it is a great way to say you appreciate the good ol’ Dad’s out there…not to mention, he’ll love it! A good dad is often overlooked this day and age - so make sure that if you have a great father in your life to let him know how much you appreciate all of his contributions to his family and community. From all of us here at Thunder Roads Norcal - HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Tech Tips I

Carburetors - Part V

n the first four parts of this series, we talked about carburetor basics and covered a few of the modern Harley O.E.M. and aftermarket carbs. We also discussed the tuning components of these carburetors. This month we’ll highlight some common tuning procedures that are germane to most fuel mixers. During the tuning process, the tuner must ascertain whether the air fuel mixture is appropriate for a given circuit, or overly rich/lean. There are several ways to determine this. Be advised that a lean condition can be caused by vacuum leaks as well, so you’ll want to diagnose that symptom before proceeding. Intake seals get brittle with age and that is a very common problem area. Let’s start with the pilot circuit. Most carburetors use an air/fuel mixture screw in conjunction with a jet for this circuit. For most carbs the default setting is somewhere between 1 ¼ - 2 ½ turns out from fully seated. We said this before, it warrants repetition! Lightly seated can’t be overstated. Over-tightening will almost always ruin the seat which is integral to the carburetor body and therefore renders the carb un-repairable. The ideal setting will achieve highest RPM as you go back and forth in direction. Remember that some carbs use an air screw, some use a fuel screw. In addition to the a/f screw setting, another indication that the jetting is too rich will be the lack of enrichener needed to cold start the bike. Black smoke from the exhaust is also a sign. Aside from using a dyno (the most accurate method for sure), one method of tuning the intermediate and main circuits is acceleration. If you have the means to time runs in a measured distance that would be preferred, otherwise seat of the pants “feel” is your other option. Too lean will cause the bike to break up/cough through the intake. Too rich will cause a stumble or miss. In most cases, the jet just large enough to eliminate the former symptom will get you on target. Most carburetor manufacturers provide guidelines for jetting. You can use this as a baseline. Remember that when changing jetting, go two sizes at a time. This will usually produce enough of a change that will be noticeable and will make tuning easier. Using the above acceleration characteristics can be combined with spark plug readings which will provide even more accuracy. Spark plug readings, also known as “plug chop” readings can be difficult and even dangerous depending on road conditions and traffic density. If possible, use a closed course. Warm the bike to full operating temperature. Run it in the RPM band that you are tuning. For the intermediate circuit, cruising between 2000 and 3500 RPM with less than 50% throttle will be about right (don’t forget to disable your accelerator pump to avoid false readings). After several min-

utes and when it’s safe to do so, pull in the clutch, chop the throttle, and kill the motor. Coast to a safe location and pull the plugs. The condition will illustrate the state of tune for that circuit. Black sooty plugs indicate a rich condition, white and/or blistering appearances indicate too lean. A tan to rusty brown powdery deposit is indicative of ideal combustion.

facturer’s service literature.

The same procedure can be used for the main. RPM should be above 3500 with greater than 50% throttle all the way to wide open. Specific RPM ranges and throttle positions for each circuit will be given in the manu-

If you’re in doubt, a dyno tune is definitely the most accurate procedure of all. While applying a load to the rear wheel, the dyno is also measuring the exhaust output much like an O2 sensor in a closed loop EFI system. It also reads ignition timing. With these inputs the tuner can see air/fuel mixtures at any given RPM and make adjustments in timing and fuel delivery to optimize performance from idle all the way to red line. Our dyno guy will probably scold me for grossly oversimplifying this, so a column on dyno tuning will be coming soon. Finally, since it can be a bit expensive, it pays to shop around. Although labor rates may be comparable, how the hours are charged can vary greatly! Next month we’ll finish this series with a look at some of the vintage carburetors used during the early days of Harley-Davidson.

RIDE DESTINATION

NORTHERN NEVADA: SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – GENOA – VIRGINIA CITY

L

ast month we took advantage of an opportunity for a nice day ride while in South Lake Tahoe. Our son has a time share and we spent five days at a place off Kingsbury Grade (SR 207) called The Ridge. We stayed in a two-bedroom condo with his wife and our granddaughter. We had a great time while taking advantage of all the amenities offered.

Entering Genoa

We had planned on taking our ride on Saturday, but when we got up that morning, a late spring storm had dropped about five inches of snow in the area. It was a virtual Christmas postcard outside. So the ride was pushed back a day and we spent some time out in the snow. We built a small snowman out on the patio (named it Olaf, of course) and had a snowball fight on our way to lunch. Good times! The following day the weather had warmed and the roads had cleared, so it was time to head down the mountain. We took the scenic Kingsbury Grade down to the little town of Genoa. The oldest settlement in Nevada was having their annual Cowboy Festival that weekend. Unfortunately, because of the snowstorm the previous day, we missed a lot of the activities. The festival is a celebration of the rural West heritage of the Carson Valley. The Western lifestyle, along with Western music and poetry is what you’ll find on this weekend. After wandering through town, visiting some of the vendors and checking out the great little museum, we made our way over to the Genoa Bar and Saloon (www. genoabarandsaloon.com) It was here that we ran into the

owner Willy and hung out a bit. A fun loving, gregarious guy, he could probably entertain you for hours with his stories. The bar is the oldest drinking establishment in Nevada and you get that great western feel as soon as you walk in. Really love the chandeliers. Being around as long as it has, it’s history is extensive. Many historical figures, musicians and film stars have visited over the years. Quite a few movies have been made here also. Wish we could have stayed longer, but there never seems to be enough time on these rides.

Snowshoe Thompson

BTW: The statue there at Mormon Station is of John A. “Snowshoe” Thompson. A native of Norway, he became a postman and between 1856 and 1876 delivered the mail between Placerville and Genoa. Twice a month, even in the most horrendous winters, he made the 90 mile trek carrying a 50 to 100 pound mailbag. Incredible! And I thought I had a few bad jobs in the past! So now it was on to Hwy 395, through Carson City and up SR 341 to Virginia City. A nice scenic ride and at one point, we actually came upon a dozen or more wild horses that crossed the road in front of us. Arriving in town, we were famished and headed straight to the Red Dog Saloon for some grub and refreshment. While we ate, Lonesome Rain was on stage for everybody. They did a nice bluesy Lonesome Rain

version of Dixie that I liked. Looking at the memorabilia wall, you’ll find that Big Brother and the Holding CompaFrom Mt Rose ny was the house band back in 1966. Janis Joplin also had a gig there one weekend. They hit it off and when Big Brother returned to San Francisco, she joined them. So the Red Dog was on the ground floor of the budding psychedelic rock phenomena. Later, we moved on up the road to Virginia City and the Bucket of Blood. We sat back at the rear window and enjoyed the view. It was nice to relax some. In a while, we noticed that a band had begun to set up, so we moved on over to the stage area. The place was filling up quickly. Just about everyone was wearing western clothing or period dress. Soon, David John and the Comstock Cowboys had the crowd up and on the dance floor. It was real nice to hang out with some down-to-earth patriotic folks. Hard working, decent people. Like most Americans - unlike the protesting shitbags that we are seeing way too much of on the news nowadays.

Western Dress

Well, time was getting short, so we hopped on the bagger The wide open valley below and the Sierras off in the disand rode on down the Geiger Grade. What a beautiful ride. tance were impressive indeed. Crossing Hwy 395, we motored on up the Mt Rose Hwy. Another impressive section of asphalt, especially as you are cresting the top of the summit - to see the valley behind you and the lake in front. When we Poor Reds pulled into Incline Village, it was time to hit Austin’s and the Paddle Wheel to grab a quick bite to keep us until dinner and off we went. The cruise south along the east side of Lake Tahoe is our favorite. The snow-capped peaks of the crater this time of year is an added bonus. Well, that was how our day went. Back in South Lake Tahoe, we met the kids downtown and had some dinner before calling it a night. Oh, one other thing. As I’m sure most of you know, Poor Red’s Bar-B-Q is open again. Until this trip, we hadn’t been able to get up there, so we stopped in for lunch on the way to Tahoe. Even better than before! Next time you’re out and about, go have one of those Golden Cadillacs. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: Alameda Wooden Trailers

n my previous life as a carpenter, I was fortunate to be able to work on some of the most exclusive custom homes around Late Tahoe. Places were money was not an issue and nothing but the finest would do. I developed a big appreciation for fine craftsmanship from this experience. When I met Merlin of Alameda Wooden Trailers and got a close up look at one I have to say I was quite impressed. Merlin a retired aerospace engineer used his experience to his advantage in designing this beautiful trailer. Merlin was very proud that he was able to tackle this business with his daughter Andrea who handles the business side of things while Merlin takes care of the production. Their adventure started while Merlin was going through a bit of a rough patch in life like most of us have been through at one time or another. One day he picked up a Harley-Davidson patch that said “Screw it - Let’s Ride” - a lifelong rider, he knew that was His sign which lead Merlin to embark upon a long journey that started on

May 10th 2010 that he dubbed as “The Last Road Trip”. If the truth be told, it sounds to me like this trip is still in progress. This adventure would take him all over the USA logging over 180,000 miles in the process. At first, it was all about tent camping but Merlin soon grew tired of rolling up a soaking wet tent then rolling it back out the next night still dripping water. He knew there must be a better way. It was at this point that he decided to build himself a camper trailer that he could pull behind his motorcycle. Six weeks

later and the first Rocio trailer was born. That trailer logged over 125,000 miles over the next 4 years through 48 states and is still going strong today. He had no intention of turning this into a business at that time but after all of the attention that his trailer got while on his travels and with requests from others to build one for them, Merlin and his daughter Andrea decided to start their business Alameda Wooden Trailers.

2nd Annual Bay2Sac Ride

April 23 (Sacramento): Over 500 bikes participated in the 2nd Annual Bay2Sac presented by Street Bike Freaks MC and Goodtimes Motorsports to make this years run another trophy ride. Big Cory and Bryan, along with other members of SBF MC worked their tails off to bring to their friends, supporters and other MC clubs a ride that they wouldn’t soon forget…and they succeeded. Beautiful weather, great location, BBQ, DJs, raffles, lots of vendors, stunt show and a mechanical bull…mechanical bull? Yep you read that right! The ride began in Fairfield and continued on to Emeryville, San Jose, and Lathrop picking up riders all along the way. 300 miles later the band of riders rolled into Millers Park in Downtown Sacramento. Sacramento’s Ruff Ryder Matthew along with other Ruff Ryder’s and their prospects spend a lot of time hanging out on a hill right before the Sacramento Causeway spelling out Ruff Riders with rocks. It was their way of welcoming their SBF brothers, friends and supporters as they rode into Sacramento. The rumble of 500 motorcycles rolling into Downtown Sacramento was heard for miles. The end spot participators heard them coming long before they actually got there. The food was hot and the music loud when they pulled in. With all bikers accounted for - the party was on! A good turn out of vendors was on hand to welcome the riders. Among them were: the MMA, Hells Angels Sacramento,

Team Fit Girls, Dr. One Life, JPH Suspensions, Securus, Afrakans in Exile, Onintheair, T3 Design Studios, RR Designs, Bobby Spade Company and many others. Raffle tickets were sold by the Freaks for a buck a hit. Lucky winners received the prizes ranging from travel mugs to a $300 gift certificate by JPH Suspensions. Did I say there was a mechanical bull there? I sure did. WOW what a ride the contestants took in hopes of winning a large trophy presented by the SBFreaks and a $100 photography certificate from T3 Design Studios.

The best part to me was the impromptu stunt show. Loved watching the guys bring their rides up on one wheel and ride it down the stretch of road roped off to outsiders. Great show! A big shout out to the SBF Chapters: 707, 925, 916, 209, Folsom, Elk Grove, San Jose, and San Francisco! Thanks for the memories FREAKS! See ya next year! 6 Annual High 5 Run th

April 30 (Rio Linda): The American Legion Riders Post 521 was ready for their 6th Annual poker run as six surrounding posts rolled in to participate and show their support. We wandered to the parking lot across the street to get a closer look at the Huey helicopter that once served as a gun ship during in the Vietnam war; I also met a couple of the veteran pilots who flew these helicopters which were so critical in moving troops and providing supplies and air support to our ground force as well as evacuating casualties. Also in the parking lot was a group of pirates that would fire off their canons to signal that a group of riders were departing on the poker run. All of this added to the excitement in the air for the folks watching as the bikes rolled out. It was quite a windy day but that did not deter the spirits of the riders as a great route that included stops at Stingrayz, Plainfield Station and one of our favorite hangouts - Elkhorn Saloon. Returning riders turned in their poker hands and were served tri-tip sandwiches and listened to the Big River Band which we were told that 3 of the guys were also American Legion Riders. High hand winner of the day went to Brad B. with a full straight; the members of Post 521 had assembled quite a large selection of a wide variety of raffle prizes with the grand prize was a Neighborhood Watch kit that consisted of an AR-15 rifle, a lawn chair with umbrella and a mag flashlight – yep only in Rio Linda! The day was full of great riding, camaraderie and good food so that makes it a good one for sure. Article and photos contributed by Stan and Terry Hill

War Machines: The importance of the motorcycle in The Great War is often overlooked, although the motorcycle was one of the most prolific tools in the Allied arsenal. Messengers on horseback were replaced by riders on motorcycles, and quickly became the most reliable source of communication in battle. Communications technology was highly unreliable during WWI, and based on the virtue of speed alone, motorcycles became the best way for the military to transfer orders, reports, and maps between units.

WWI machine gun sidecar

Now, I know what you’re thinking…Riding is dangerous enough on any given day, so who the hell wants to do it in the middle of full blown combat? I have to admit, at first thought the motorcycle seems like an unlikely choice for combat equipment. It lacks armor, leaving the operator totally exposed and it can be quite easily damaged. But sometimes what is needed in battle is speed and agility…and the nimble motorcycle was irreplaceable on the battlefield. Imagine the kahones on those guys (or maybe they were just nuts in general), but whatever the reasoning behind the action, riding through shot and shell to secure victory is pretty damn impressive to me.

WWI troops mc

Motorcycles were used for more than just messaging in WWI. The versatility of these machines clearly helped them play a hugely significant role in the logistics of war… even more so than cars. In addition to dispatch and courier duties they were used for reconnaissance and patrol, as ammunition and medical supply carriers, and for casualty evacuation. They also modified motorcycles to act as field ambulances, as well as mounting machine guns to sidecars for combat.

WWI Harley®

When the US entered WWI, we brought motorcycles from several US companies to help on the front lines. The bulk of motorcycles came from Indian and Harley Davidson, but motorcycles produced by Excelsior, Henderson, and others also made it into battle in Europe. So what does all of this do to the motorcycle industry? Let’s take a look at three key players from the start of the production era, and where they end up at the end of WWI. Harley Davison introduced the first side car in 1914, followed by a brief return to the use of chain versus belt driven motorcycles to help combat the problems associated with using leather belts. (The slippage, stretching, and rotting of leather belts was unacceptable to the manufacturer.) Some of these models were briefly available with a two speed transmission in the rear hub.

In 1915, Harley introduced the three speed sliding gear transmission with the final and primary drive on the same side. By 1917, one third of Harley Davidson production is purchased by the US Army. 1917 also brought about the creation of Harley’s Quartermaster School, designed to train Army mechanics, the school was retained after the war as the Service School; providing factory trained mechanics for Harley Davidson dealerships. By 1918 almost half of all Harley Davidson motorcycles are sold for

use by the US military, with a total of 20,000 motorcycles produced for the troops in WWI. After Armistice was signed, Corporal Roy Holtz became the first American soldier to enter Germany, and he did so, on a Harley.

WWI

Despite its strong connection to Germany, Triumph takes its place in WWI history on the Allied side. How’s that for an uncomfortable partnership? In 1914, Triumph was chosen by Colonel Claude Holbrook to supply the Type H motorcycle for Allied military service. The Type H was the first motorcycle produced by Triumph without pedals, the first “true motorcycle” for the company. The Type H originally had a belt driven rear wheel and a 499 cc air cooled 4 stroke single cylinder engine. The revamped model H, in particular, was regarded by many as having been the first “modern motorcycle” introduced in 1915; it had a 550 cc side valve 4 stroke engine with a 3 speed gear box and belt transmission. It was so popular that it gained the nickname “Trusty Triumph”. Triumph would eventually contribute 30,000 motorcycles to the military over the course of WWI. The versatility of motorcycles clearly helped them to play a significant role in the logistics of WWI…even more so than cars. Motorcycles were integral in the success of the Allied troops, and turned a relatively new and underdeveloped industry into a world-wide phenomenon. Next time we will take a look at post war motorcycle history, and how the Great Depression turned motorcycle production into a sink or swim industry. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 29

EVENT

During the war, Indian Motorcycles were continuing to grow. By 1914, Indian had over 3,000 employees working on a seven mile long assembly line in its Springfield, Massachusetts plant. This same year, Indian debuts the world’s first motorcycle with electric lights and starter. By 1916, Indian has also introduced WWI Women in Sidecar the 61 cubic inch Powerplus side valve engine. In 1918, Article and photos contributed by Melanie Schwarte of Indian improves upon this by introducing the overhead Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa cam, 4 valve per cylinder Powerplus model. By the end of the war, Indian had supported the war effort with an incredible 41,000 machines.

Tattoo Betty’s – A Family Affair

Mom aka Tattoo Betty was Jordans first canvas

R

ecently Terry and I took a nice scenic ride out to the gold rush town of Jackson to check out Tattoo Betty’s new location at Hwy 49 and Hwy 88 intersection on 125 Peek St. It is not only in a great location it still has the same laid back charm that their old shop had - a place where customers feel at ease and relaxed. At TRM NorCal, we carefully choose shops to include into our Riderz Ink section. They must be top notch in their artistry skills and customer service, Tattoo Betty’s is a great example of the high standards that we look for. Another thing that makes this business unique in the industry is the fact that the whole family is involved at some level. Tattoo Betty specializes in custom pieces to fit the vision of each customer. My experience with tattoos is I can come up with a concept that I want but a talented artist will improve upon it greatly - so I always give the artist the freedom to create. Mom (Betty) and Dad (Ken) have passed on their artistic gift to their kids. Now their oldest son, Jordan has moved back home from Pennsylvania bringing home 10 years of tattoo experience. While we were there we asked about his first tattoo and Betty proudly showed us the tattoo that Jordan had done on top of her left foot. How cool is that? It still looks great 10 years later. Now Jordan’s younger brother Matthew is the new shop apprentice. Mom and dad do things the right way requiring that a proper apprenticeship is completed before

Ken, Matthew, Jordan and Betty anybody gets to lay down any ink. Ken and Betty met in Petaluma (Sonoma County) in the 1980’s and started a family and moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family. Around 4 years ago they moved back to California and opened a second shop while Jordan continued to run the shop in PA. The logistics of running two shops so far apart became more of a hassle than it was worth with air fares and gas prices going through the roof, they decided to consolidate and move everything back to California. Betty and Ken are thinking about eventually investing in a mobile unit and getting back into the convention circuit now that the kids are older. So if you are ready to get some new ink, you would do well to take a beautiful ride out to Amador County. Tell them about the tattoo that you’ve envisioned and sit back and see what Tattoo Betty’s come up with. What more could you want other than a great tattoo and a great ride in all in the same day. Beyond the REDWOOD RUN

E

very June, it has been a tradition for many of us to pack up our bikes and head out to Piercy, California (just south of Garberville in Humboldt County) for the annual Redwood Run. It is a time of countdowns and great anticipation. Who are the bands coming? What is the weather going to be like? Who will or will not be able to make it? Bottom line, what can we expect? After decades, many have their routines down. But, there will also be a lot of first-time Redwood Runners that this will be their first time attending this run and are here to enjoy one of the last old school biker rallies around. TRM NorCal would like to share some of the great places to drop a kickstand while riding in the area. Both veteran Redwood Run-ners and newbies alike can appreciate great places for the much needed butt break, a good meal and cold beverages while enroute to the Redwood Run! We have made this a regular road trip and have found many great biker friendly places along the way so we just wanted to share them with you and suggest that you consider these businesses as you travel to and from the Redwood Run 2016!

Garberville Modifys Its Name

During Redwood Run

FROM THE VALLEY Interstate 5 or via Hwy 505 North: You can bypass more interstate riding with a scenic route via Hwy 16 (outside of Woodland) and through several quaint rural towns in the Capay Valley corridor. This route has a must-stop with ROAD TRIP BAR & GRILL. Bikers and owners Paula and Jerry Tackett love to see their fellow bikers line up their rides in front of their restaurant anytime – but especially on their way to or from the Redwood Run. Immediately, you’ll feel right at home choosing from a wide variety of biker named menu items like Roadside Ribs, Low-Rider Chicken Pasta, Knucklehead Rib-eye with several Chrome sides.

Granzella family welcome all road warriors making this a very great midway stop for those enroute to the Redwood Run. Hwy 20 West: A fun - twisty ride route from a scenic agricultural Yolo County into Lake County and the oldest lake in North America – Clear Lake. As you drop into the town of Clear Lake Oaks, it is likely you’ll be ready for another butt break or cold one at our favorite place to drop a kickstand – THE BARN. (Did you know that there once was a cow statue on top of the building before pranksters stole it in the middle of the night?)

Interstate 5 via Hwy 20 West: You can’t miss the huge the billboard signs off of Interstate 5 directing travelers to GRANDZELLA’S RESTAURANT & INN in Williams. This place has so much to offer to roadside travelers with its ItalianAmericano restaurant, deli and sports lounge surrounded by the exotic animals from all over (including their famous polar and brown bears) mounted on the walls. It’s a great place to re-group with other riders that might be coming in from other directions of the north state. If you have been on the road for a while and need a place to rest they also have a 43 room motel adjacent to the sports bar. Family owned and operated since 1976, the

Keep this place in mind on Sunday on your return home from the Run to stop in for the FREE chili dogs to keep you fueled up for the ride home after a hard hitting weekend in the Redwoods. Depending on your gas gauge and your belly, only 15 miles further down the road in Nice you should stop in at ROMI’S WILD WEST BREW & BBQ. | Let me tell you firsthand as the food is outstanding and I can’t wait to get my hands on some of those BBQ ribs again! Bring your appetite because they are not shy about filling your plate up. Now you’d think that after a big meal like that you might need a nap or you are thinking of planning a scenic route in the future.

TRM NorCal highly recommends the F E AT H E R B E D RAILROAD BED & BREAKFAST RESORT. Guests are offered vintage railroad cabooses (rooms) with its own theme– like the popular Easy Rider room! This lakeside private park setting is a biker favorite resort just off of Hwy 20 on Lakeshore Blvd. As previous guests here, we can assure you that you will want to come back and make this a trip all on its own.

Beyond the REDWOOD RUN

On our way home last year, my riding buddies noticed that at some point my tail light came off my bike never to be seen again; luckily we were just a few miles from Gunnink’s Harley-Davidson. We rolled in and they had happened to have the correct light for my 07 Road King in stock and got me back on the road this time with a tail light that was tightened up all the way. I am still blaming the rough road near my camp site for loosening up the screws that held it on, that’s my story and I am sticking to it. Need fuel? 5 miles north of Ukiah just past the Hwy 20 exit is the COYOTE VALLEY CASINO with the lowest gas prices along the Hwy 101 corridor. Take the West Road exit to this biker friendly Redwood Valley casino that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for folks heading to/from the Redwood Run. Plus, if you’re feeling lucky, you might want to stop in to fill up your tank and find out how you could win one of 2 two brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycles that they are giving away.

EVENT

Further north on Hwy 101, you’ll ride into Laytonville -the home of BOOMER’S SALOON - another biker friendly place and long-time supporter of the Redwood Run. Boomer’s Saloon is a great place to stop for a butt break and refreshments before making the final stretch to the Redwood Run. You’re only 33 miles away – you can make it! Sunday after the Redwood Run, they’ll be serving a Bikers Breakfast Buffet for your return trip home. Not sure about you, but by the time Sunday morning rolls around I am ready for a warm hearty meal, a few cups of hot cups and/or a 16oz “Hair of the Hog” Bloody Mary.

Since you’re here you don’t want to miss riding in the world-famous redwood groves of THE AVENUE OF THE GIANTS. For this day ride, head north on Hwy 101 to Exit 663 for the South Fork/Honeydew exit to start a 31-mile breath-taking scenic ride on the old Highway 101 which parallels Hwy 101. Or if you are a more adventurous rider, how about a day ride heading west over to the ocean to the “Lost Coast”? Take the Redway exit and head 25 miles west and to navigate the 153 turns (yes, someone counted each turn) into the town of Shelter Cove. On this day ride, you can beat the heat as it is almost guaranteed to be at least 10 degrees cooler there. Shelter Cove is our favorite place to escape and we often make our reservations with a biker owned getaway destination at THE INN OF THE LOST COAST. “Banshee” Sisters of Scota WMC Vice President My passion for motorcycles began when Dad bought a Honda CB 350 in the late 1960’s. It was really cool with a custom paint job and he would let me ride in front of him and hang on the handle bars as we went around and around the neighborhood. At the age of 6, Dad bought the family an orange mini bike that we shared and learned to ride ourselves. But one motorcycle was not enough for our family and a Honda QA 50 was added to the riding adventures. As I grew older my love for motorcycle never stopped. In my late teens, I became the proud owner of a Honda CB 750 custom and a 1969 Harley Davidson Sportster which I rode for years thru the Yuba Sutter area. I even graced the pages of “In The Wind” Magazine after attending the Sacramento Toy Run in early 1980’s. Not long after this I settled into Mommy mode and my motorcycles sat a while and then were sold during some hard times. Even though my dear motorcycles were gone, it was just a temporary thing, and after a 20 year hiatus I was back in the saddle again and riding my blue sportster. Longing for some companions, I researched and found my beloved Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club. My Sisters as I call them, are a well-established Women’s Motorcycle Club for “35 years” and counting, as Women Outlaws in the motorcycle community. Wow,” I Live to Ride and Love to Give” so I bought a new Harley Davidson Sportster in 2007 and I have been riding with SOSWMC Sisters ever since. I could not have found a better Club to ride with and the rest history.

NAME REVEAL PARTY

LANE SPLITTER HARLEY-DAVIDSON: NEW NAME, NEW LOGO, NEW ATTITUDE April 16 (San Jose): We were there for the name reveal party from San Jose Harley to Lane Splitter Harley-Davidson (www. lanesplitterhd.com). They have two other successful Harley shops in Ohio and Colorado, so this isn’t their first rodeo. We are very fortunate to a have a Harley shop like Lane Splitter Harley-Davidson in the bay area. Dan and I have visited a lot of Harley shops across the United States to the east coast and back. Lane Splitter Harley is all about making their customers and biker community happy and having fun. They really do walk their talk. The new owners and operating partners know how to throw a party with a year full of events on the calendar; they plan to change what it is to buy a Harley, service Harleys, and shop for parts and riding gear. They’re even going to take 100 new bike owners and contest winners to Sturgis this year! With all the elegant accommodations! This is one of many events they want to continue every year. Lane Splitter is planning on feeding and entertaining the new bike owners - all for free and will not accept tips. They even reserved Shoreline Out Look Towers for the Kid Rock concert! Again, all free from Lane Splitter! They also have a rewards program where you get points for your purchases, except for labor

cost. I already signed up which only took about a minute when I bought my new Harley hat. They have 12 salesmen on the floor so you get that personal attention. They even have a salesperson that makes sure you get the right bike that fits you perfect and will perform to the type of riding your planning on doing. They also have 6 people in Motor Clothes department to make sure you get the right gear for your riding style and look good wearing it. I wonder if they can get Dan out of his overalls and looking good? Nahh…that would take more than a miracle for that to happen. Dan was all excited about the 9 technicians. Every tech has two lifts each in case someone comes in for a tire change, oil change, brakes, etc… While walking around the showroom checking out the new bikes and visualizing me and Dan on one of them while touring the States again is when I met General Manager Scott Mann. We went to his office to talk about the future of Lane Splitter Harley. I was totally impressed with the vision he had and he isn’t wasting anytime turning it into a reality. He informed me it just wasn’t his vision but the whole team’s vision. Scott came on board November of 2015. His experience started early and included a GM position at Stringer Harley-Davidson

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 40

in Ohio. Scott has more energy than the energizer bunny, he even changed the San Jose HOG chapter to Lane Splitter Chapter, no dues, just national Hog fun and do it attitude! One thing a good GM needs is an awesome Assistant GM and he has the best with Theresa Schiessl! Theresa was the GM for Doc Holiday Harley-Davidson in Glenwood Springs (near Aspen) Colorado, it was here that Theresa started out in Motor Clothes Department and has worked her way to the top. You can say that she knows the business from the ground up. It’s really exciting to see how the owners and partners put together this dream team and we get to see and experience it while it grows. Their number one goal is that you have an awesome experience while at Lane Splitters Harley-Davidson, even if you’re there for the free food or to buy a new Harley. There goes that bell again!? All day someone has been ringing that big bell that is hanging on the wall. I just ask Scott what was up with the bell, he told me every time someone buys and rides out on a new Harley - they get to pull the rope to ring the bell! I was really hoping to see Dan over there ringing that bell! Please don’t miss understand me I do love riding with Dan on his 04 Roadking but it would be really nice on a brand new cruiser. It’s 1pm, and it’s show time at Lane Splitter Harley! The Straight Up SJ guys are putting on one hellava stunt show! The bikes are straight up and the back fenders are scraping on the asphalt! These guys are amazing! If you ever get a chance to see these guys ride - you have to do it. Go check them out (www. straightupsj.com) and find out where they will be performing next. Thanks Lane Splitter for an awesome day! RIDE PRIDE

CONCEPT CHOPPER MINIATURE TURNS INTO REALITY

I

first saw this bike at the Easyriders Show in Sacramento, and thought it was an eye catching Custom Pro Street with classy clean lines and custom parts everywhere you would look. The bikes owner, Tom painstakingly built a miniature model of a bike several years before. The model has 185 individual parts that included detailed metal pieces like its hollow gas tank. As you can see from the photos of the model is small in stature as it is big on the details. Unbeknown to Tom at the time that his miniature model would turn out to be a premonition of this month’s RIDE PRIDE. In fact, it wasn’t until later that a friend pointed out that his bike was a spitting image of the miniature model he had built 12 years earlier. When you look closely at this bike you can tell that a lot of thought and hard work went into the build, no expense was spared on this one and only the best possible parts and components were used. There were several parts with this build that you just can’t buy off the shelf - so Tom had to fabricate them by hand himself. This motorcycle turned out to be a very classy little beast with clean lines that just beg you to twist the throttle. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Brandi

Hells Angels Sacramento Spring Fling April 16 (Sacramento): Spring is upon us now, and one of the best parties to open the season is the annual Sacramento Hells Angels Spring Fling. This party always draws a big crowd, and this year several hundred people showed up to socialize and greet old friends. With the Fryed Brothers Band kicking out some bad ass tunes, it wasn’t long before people were dancing up a storm. All the volunteers helping with the food were handling the huge line of people with ease and had all the hungry fed in record time. This event is always well organized and runs like clockwork every year. Thanks to the Sacramento Hells Angels for a great time! See you next time.

Covered Bridge Built 1894

DAY RIDE: Chico’s Honey Run Covered Bridge

F

or a day trip, Sunshine and I traveled north on Hwy 99 just south of Chico, turning east on Skyway Road. A few miles down Skyway is a small brown sign with white letters saying “Covered Bridge - 5 miles”. Taking a left off of Skyway Road and onto Honey Run Road you step back in time just a little and into a rural setting, like maybe just outside of Mayberry. The homes are very well manicured with spacious yards. If you enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle you will enjoy this country road leading to the covered bridge, winding back and forth along side of the meandering Butte Creek which is full this time of year. It was about as wide as a first down and 1 foot deep.

Honey Run Rd aka Graffiti Hwy

Pulling up to the Honey Run Covered Bridge parking lot, we saw the lot was full, but still enough room to park a bike. Honey Run Covered Bridge was built in 1894 and the park is now privately owned. Day use is $3 and includes the BBQ pit with many tables and benches, flushing toilets, running water, drinking fountains, parking and of course the covered bridge with Butte Creek flowing under for wading and sun bathing. Walking through the bridge you could just image the horse drawn wagons crossing one at a time taking turns to get to the other side. For our ride home, we decided to continue into Paradise by way of the road called “Graffiti Hwy”. This road is a continuation of Honey Run Road. This portion is part of the original road build as a two lane road, but for two Model T’s. Be on the lookout for oncoming traffic. If you feel Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 56

Locks of Love

you are lost, just look for the graffiti on the road (which is almost the whole distance to Paradise) and you will be on the right track. A half dozen motorcycles asked if they could follow Sunshine and me to Paradise, never being on that part of the road they did not know the way. Honey Run Road ends in Paradise at Skyway Road, where the other bikers parted, take a right and it will take you back to Chico. Half way back you will find “lookout point” over looking Butte Creek Valley where we just came from. At the point you will find “Locks Of Love” on the guard rail fence. Once you hit Hwy 99, head north towards Redding and take the next off ramp, east 20th St. You will find a half dozen major restaurants within a half mile circle. After a good meal there still will be enough daylight to get home! Ride on and keep the shiny side up.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

SAN JOSE A few weeks back we were fortunate enough to hook up with the guys from Straight UP SJ (www.straightupsj.com) for a spin around the San Jose area which included a stop at good place to watch them practice their skills. We had a blast getting photos and video of the guys tearing up the roads. TRM NorCal also had the opportunity to watch them entertain the crowd for our new advertiser Lane Splitter Harley-Davidson during their Name Reveal Party (see article

on PAGES 40-41) You don’t want to miss an opportunity to see them in person, so mark your calendar for their next performance along with several other talented stunt riders in Sacramento at the 4th Annual FXRS of California Grudge Races on August 20th. It is going to be a kick ass good time. If you’re looking to have the Straight Up guys at your event – you can reach them via Instagram @STRAIGHTUP_SJ or on their Straight UP Facebook page.

DAY RIDE: LAGUNA SECA Get your motors running - it is race time at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca! (www.mazdaraceway.com) Saturday morning, my buddies Larry and Gary showed up at my place for our ride to Monterey. We had tickets for the Continental Monterey Grand Prix for April 28-May 1. Unfortunately, our wives had other plans - so it was going to be a guy ride. Woohoo! Let’s just say it was an awesome ride there, no traffic and no one yelling in our ear to stop so they can go pee again. From Fremont, we took 680 to 101 South to Salinas and turned off before Salinas to cruise the back roads to the raceway. We ended up going the wrong way, but to me that’s part of the adventure. We got there at the perfect time, no line going in. We headed for the free parking area - it wasn’t too bad except I just spent two days cleaning and polishing my bike and it was a dirt road and parking area. Note to self: The paid bike parking area is all paved and a lot closer to the event and well worth the $30 for 3 days of parking, which I will remember to do for next time. The races were bad ass! Saturday was the practice and qualifying races. So I took a few shots of the race cars, but spent

most of my time in the paddock and checking out the vendors. One particular vendor was Stand 21, they offer all the racing gear for track/car racing. Those guys there are so awesome and knowledgeable; if only, I needed racing gear. As I was walking around, I saw a guy getting a banner signed by some drivers. I asked him what it was for and he told me he started a charity called “Step Up for Honduras” (www.stepupforhonduras.org) He told me that the kids in Honduras don’t get a childhood like they do here in the states. And that children (as young as 5 years old) are put to work panning for gold using mercury. So he made the charity to pay for schools, playgrounds and medical care so these children can have a better opportunity in life. On a lighter note, I finally tried a frog dog which is a hot dog in a French roll. Was pretty good. Sunday was the big day, that’s when the Corvettes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Vipers, Mazdas and Porsches went at it! The beauty of Laguna Seca is that you can go anywhere you want except on the track. Walking around the paddock and being able to meet the drivers, the race crews, and the Miss Mazda

Raceway girls was a lot of fun. Another bad ass thing they have is a “ride along” where they take fans out in these top of the line cars and race around the track at top speed. My daughter was there and got a couple passes for a ride in a Lamborghini. She said the Lamborghini she was in went 147 mph on the straightaways. I bet she was peeing her pants. The races got me all amped up so on the way home I felt like I was racing every one, lane splitting and all. Good thing the ole lady wasn’t with me. She would have been hitting me the whole time. I can’t wait till the next race which will be Motul FIM World Superbike Championship on July 8-10th. I’m gonna get my tickets ahead of time to save some money. This one is a biker’s race with lots of cool vendors to check out. I even heard Nicky #69 Hayden will be returning to the track. Will be awesome

to cheer on an American rider. Hope to see you all out there and don’t forget to get a photo with the gorgeous Miss Mazda Raceway girls. Man…if I was only 40 years younger! Article and photos contributed by Dan Rogers

hat is hope? As we go through our everyday lives, many of us have friends, family, and colleagues going through rough times. It could be a child rebelling with tantrums and angry out lashes, a teenager relying on drugs or alcohol to cope, a friend suffering through the battles of cancer, a workmate having to deal with an unethical work environment, or a manager that torments them on a daily basis. Whatever it is, one thing is for certain, they are all looking for hope. Hope in the recovery process, hope in the delay and or the spreading of the sickness, or hope in the changes that need to be made for a peaceful and satisfying life. Although we long for hope, it takes many of us a long time to actually stop and contemplate hope. Oh yes we can scream it, curse about it, argue about it, and or manipulate it, but until we simply stop and realize there is actually hope, we are left to our own demise in trying to deal with the issue all by ourselves. It was brought to my attention many years ago by a dear friend of mine, that when it comes to dealing with some issues in our lives or in the lives of our friends and loved ones, sometimes we are just not qualified to handle it or even deal with it. We can hope today, hope tomorrow, and hope ‘until the cows come home’, but nothing really seems to change. We contemplate “is there really any hope or am I just spinning my wheels?” Frustration sets in, depression is soon to follow, and before you know it, you are under a dark cloud, wondering how you got there. May I suggest that the sooner you realize you are unqualified to handle the situation, the sooner you may find the hope you are looking for. We are forced to find the drug and alcohol counselor that can relate and listen to our emotionally sick teenager. We search for the child counselor that may help find the real reason for the crazy outbreaks of our young child. We decide to discuss our work situations with counselors that could help direct us to a new

career path or movement in our company. These types of people can re-instill the hope we have longed for and it will only take place when we finally realize we need help. Hence, the message of the gospel, and the message of God. He is the great physician that brings back hope to those that still suffer and are at their wits end. He is not the one who lashes out lightning bolts to hurt people, He does not bring large black clouds over people’s days, He does not manipulate the mind of a teenager to force addiction upon them, and He does not put trip wire in your path to make you fall down. On the contrary, He is the God of hope. He is the doctor that heals the soul, the great counselor that directs the heart, and the best friend that lends a hand to lift you up. Listen, when a business is failing, they call a business coach. When a baseball player is struggling at the plate, they call a hitting coach. And, when a person is looking for a miracle and undeniable hope, they should be calling the ultimate coach. God is here waiting to coach you like he has coached so many to peace, joy, contentment, and freedom. He is really not hard to find. As a matter of fact, He already knows what you, your family, and your friends are going through. He is just waiting for you to ask for a little help. I pray you find Him now. If you need a little help, I will see you at Thunder Road Biker Church each every Thursday night. Romans 15:13 - “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

MY TWO CENTS:

Do you ever wonder if you ride too fast? I know I do! And I don’t know why. I’ve always been an aggressive rider, nothing like the guys from Straight Up or Unknown Industries. I don’t do wheelies or pull hole shots at every light, in fact I don’t do burnouts at all, but most of the time I ride like hell. And I do catch myself riding like some of the people I’ve written about. I’m not splitting lanes at 50 MPH when the speed limit is 35…. Well, sometimes I do, and lately, way too often. I have to tell myself “Slow down and quit riding like an asshole!” Maybe I’m getting impatient or trying to get away from some of the distracted, phone tapping, nose picking drivers I see every day or maybe I’m getting too comfortable on my bike and becoming too complacent with the rules and dangers of the road. When I sit on my bike and put the kick stand up, it feels so right and comfortable, and I feel confident, like I can do anything on my bike and that’s when it becomes dangerous. Either way, I’ve been catching myself riding too fast and taking too many chances. You would think, of all people, I would be a cautious rider since I repair wrecked bikes and straighten motorcycle frames all day. In case you didn’t know, I have a motorcycle collision repair shop in Sacramento called Rack and Pull Industries, specializing in Harley Davidson collision and frame repair. I see a shit load of wrecked bikes and I hear all kinds of horror stories about motorcycle accidents from some seriously injured people telling me what happened. Some say they can’t

wait to get back on the bike and a small percentage say they’re done, it’s too dangerous. I know I have a problem with riding too fast and taking too many chances and I just realized it! So now I know what I have to do, scratch that! I know what I should do. I’m just trying to bring this to your attention in case you’ve had a revelation lately and decided you too might be riding to fast and too careless without recognizing what you’re doing. I haven’t even started talking about all the shit on the other side of the stick. Like the cost of a speeding ticket or a reckless driving citation and the cost of your increased insurance. And God help you if the traffic cop that pulls you over acts like someone pissed in his corn flakes that day or he’s going to take it out on you because he’s pissed off because he’s beefing with his ol’ lady or the guys at work are making fun of him because of the way his ol’ lady treats him or he just doesn’t like you because you look like the son of a bitch who took his ol’ lady on a motorcycle ride, for the week end. Either way, there’s nothing like a good motorcycle ride to bring you back to life after a hard day’s work or at the end of a tough week. Just pay attention and be aware of what you’re doing and by all means watch out for the other guy and make it home safe. Now go ride like hell and have fun! That’s my two cents! “Rhino” woke up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night and noticed a confirmed sexual predator living in the neighborhood sneaking through his next door neighbor’s garden. Suddenly his neighbor came out from nowhere and smacked him over the head with a shovel, killing him instantly. He then began to dig a grave with the shovel. He went back to bed contemplating what he was going to do about this. His wife said, “honey you’re shaking, what’s wrong?” Totally astonished Rhino said ‘You’ll never believe what I’ve just seen’ that bastard next door doing…..he still has my f***ing shovel”! _______________________________________________________ Dezi was outside pulling weeds on a hot summer day when her husband; Lanny, walked up and asked her what they were having for supper. Irritated by the thought of him sitting in the air-conditioned house while she labored away on the weeds, Dezi answered, “I can’t believe you’re asking me about supper right now! Pretend I’m out of town, go inside and make supper yourself!” So Lanny went back in the house and fixed himself a big steak, potatoes, garlic bread, and a tall beer. Dezi walked in just about the time he was finishing up and asked, “Where’s my dinner?”

father’s time had come and they saw their father in the coffin, they remembered his wish. First, it was the doctor who put ten $100 bills onto the chest of the deceased. Then, came the financial planner, who also placed $1,000 there. Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer’s turn. He dipped into his pocket, took out his check book, wrote a check for $3,000, put it into his father’s coffin, and took the $2,000 cash. He later went on to become a politician. _______________________________________________________ The wife suggested I get myself one of those penis enlargers, so I did. She’s 27, and her name’s KiKi. So far, so good. Solid suggestion. This is the story of the young female student flying in a two seated airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She, frantic, grabs the mike and calls out a frantic May Day. “May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! The pilot has had a heart attack and is dead and I don’t know how to fly. Someone help me! Please help me!”

“Wth? I thought you were out of town.” _______________________________________________________ A father told his 3 sons when he sent them to the university. “I feel it’s my duty to provide you with the best possible education. You do not owe me anything for that. However, I want you to appreciate it. As a gesture of appreciation, please each put $1,000 into my coffin when I die.” And so it happened. His sons became a doctor, a lawyer and a financial planner, each very successful financially. When their

I’ve had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just take a deep breath, stay calm and everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position.” She then says: “I’m 5’4” and I support Brad Pitt for President” “O.K.” says the voice on the radio, Repeat after me: “Our Father, Who art in Heaven”
